by Andy Mansell ALTEA councillors this week joined the minister of justice to inspect and officially open a restored Spanish Civil War bunker located on the beach of L’Olla. The town’s urban restoration technicians completed the restoration, which is an integral part of the heritage of Altea and will become a listed building under the law of historical memory.
After the bunker was officially opened to the public, the party convened to the nearby Villa Gadea mansion, to view a public representation of the recovery operation involved in restoring the machine gun nest conducted by Albalat- Archeology and Heritage Management. The bunker, formed part of a battery of nests built on the coast in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War to repel any coastal invasion against the Francoist army.
However, the republican fleet lost control of the Mediterranean coasts under the naval blockade imposed by Italians and Germans during the subsequent Second World War. Machine guns were never actually installed in the bunker and after the civil war they were abandoned. In the bay of Altea there were originally eight bunkers of which currently only two remain, one at Cap Negret and the restored one at L’Olla.

by Tahnee Wright Denia's hilltop castle is a handsome reminder of the city's historic importance when the Moors ruled this part of Spain. The castle is an important landmark, which can be seen from many miles out to sea and throughout the city. The Arabs ruled Denia and much of Spain, from the 8th to the 13th century. They built the city to provide a mighty fortress against potential in-
truders. However, in 1244 the city was reconquered by the Christians and many Moors fled. After this, the mighty castle was left to crumble for many hundreds of years. A brief occupation by the French during the 19th century Peninsular war led to the castle being rebuilt. The castle involves a short, steep climb alongside a pretty street of whitewashed houses. An impressive arched entrance dates from Moorish times but
the castle itself is a mixture of styles as it developed over the centuries. Each summer, the castle opens its doors in the evening for its ‘VISITE EL CASTELL DE NIT’ series – which has proved immensely popular over the years, attracting nearly 15,000 visitors in 2016. The castle will open in the evening from 8.30pm – 00.30am Monday to Sunday, from July 6 until September 15. The Archaeological Museum will also open until 10.00pm.

Benidorm ‘Sunlounger-Gate’ Tensions rise on the waters edge of the Costa Blanca’s favourite holiday playground. by Andy Mansell Sunbathing tourists are on the verge of war as they fight for their piece of space on the famously packed beaches of Benidorm. Most Benidorm hotel and apartment visitors are familiar with the daily summer battle of the sun loungers, where every day guests line up in a rush to lay their towel on a poolside bed, before anyone else can claim one. Everyone blamed the Germans, but it appears the Spanish have taken the battle to the beach and are proving equally as adept at claiming their own piece of Benidorm beachfront paradise. Every morning at sunrise an army of eager sun worshippers erect their own chairs directly on the edge of the water, before returning to their accommodation for a leisurely breakfast. Those who prefer a holiday lie-in, arriving on the beach a little later are met by a sea of often empty loungers and chairs awaiting their owners, causing arguments and even
fisticuffs. Whilst in other coastal towns on the Costa Blanca, such as Gandía or Torrevieja the occupation of unused space on the beaches is punished with fines ranging from 150 to 750 euros, in Benidorm there is no law against the controversial practice, which causes growing tensions as the summer progresses. Last year, a local environmental group, Compromis – Los Verdes, called for a study to make a ruling on the situation, but as yet, nothing has materialized, leaving them calling for an explanation from the Benidorm town hall. Therefore, for the remainder of the Benidorm summer, anyone wanting a spot by the water should set their alarm for daybreak.

German paedophile trial: Prosecutors ask for nine year prison sentence A sixty-six-year old German, accused of downloading and making child pornography went on trial in Alicante. The man, who lived in Benidorm and worked for youth organisations, was caught in a nationwide police operation, four years ago, which brought 18 arrests in 17 provinces. The suspect, who has been detained in prison since his arrest in 2013, was charged with sexual abuse of minors, including the daughter of his ex-partner, and the possession of 169 computer files featuring videos and images of child abuse and severe cruelty. The German national, who lived alone in the town, had previous convictions against him, in his home country. In his Benidorm home, detectives discovered a locked room, with video equipment, children’s toys and clothes, plus kids candy and long range binoculars for viewing children on a nearby beach. Sources close to the Valencian high court, told the Spanish press, they expect the trial to start today, with prosecutors demanding a nine year prison sentence.
by Tahnee Wright Two hooded and masked men held customers and staff at McDonald’s in Denia at gunpoint in the early hours of last Friday morning. They initially tried to enter the fastfood restaurant via its side door, but it
was locked so they turned to customers sat on the terrace. The thieves shouted ‘money, money!’ (in English) - some customers thought it was a joke. Trying the other side door to find it was also locked, they ran to the drivethru window.
Staff inside were hiding in a small room in the kitchen and the thieves looted the drive-thru till of all its takings – it had not been emptied since midday the previous day. They left on foot. Police have opened an investigation with images taken from the CCTV cameras.
Collision leaves two trapped inside a van
A van and a car collided last Saturday on the Poritxol road in Javea. The collision, which occurred at around 5.00pm, left two gardeners in their 50s trapped inside the van. The gardeners - who suffered serious injuries and had to be freed by firefighters - had just finished work for the day and were on their way home. The four-young people travelling inside the car were able to remove themselves from it – suffering minor injuries. They are thought to have spent the day at one of the beaches and were, too, on their way home. The road was completely blocked off whilst the emergency services attended to the injured and the vehicles were removed.

Altea shooting Owner of a halal butchers, scene of a police jihadi raid in October last year, shot by a fleeing assailant.
by Andy Mansell POLICE continue to search for a man who shot the owner of a halal butchers in Altea, then fled the scene of the shooting. The victim, who was also the owner of the shop, located in Calle Metge Adolfo Quiles, is a cousin of the young Moroccan arrested in Altea last October, accused of belonging to Daesh. During the previous arrest, the shop was raided by National Police, who recovered a computer hard drive from the premises for use as evidence in their investigation. Witnesses to the shooting told the Spanish press, they heard a single gunshot inside the shop around 11am, following which, a man ran out of the building, got behind the
wheel of a parked high end car and fled the scene. The owner subsequently came out of the shop attempting to lock up the premises with blood streaming from a leg wound. He was taken by ambulance to the Marina Baixa hospital in Villajoyosa, suffering from a gunshot wound. Police are investigating whether there is any link between this shooting and the previous incident during which Adil Anouar Merabet, a cousin of the wounded man was arrested. Merabat, an alleged jihadist was arrested last October in Altea, accused of recruiting young muslims by social networks to indoctrinate them into becoming global terrorists.
Arrested for harassing a 13-year-old girl
A 22-year-old man was arrested last week alleged to have harassed a 13-year-old girl from Moraira, sending her videos of an adult nature and confessing his attraction towards her. Guardia Civil officer initiated the investigation after the
girl’s parents reported the man, having discovered the shocking content on her mobile phone. Officers learnt how the man had used social media to harass the girl and warned of the dangers of social media for children.

Benidorm at war against seagulls by Andy Mansell FOLLOWING a string of complaints from concerned tourists and residents, Benidorm council have launched measures to combat the growing seagull problem in the town. Thousands of the yellow-legged birds have made Benidorm their home, nesting on roofs, feeding on everything they find, to the point that they are causing damage to many buildings. Council officials have also received reports of attacks on people eating food in public and on children carrying sweets as the seagulls become more aggressive and territorial. In an effort to curb the problem, the council signed a contract with a specialist company a few months ago, to employ measures to scare the birds and discourage breeding, without killing the seagulls. The company has begun to remove nests from public buildings, including the town hall which has suffered a number of problems. They have also pricked eggs in the nests of the seagulls, which they hope will curb the population in the future.
Bird scaring devices and acoustic equipment have been implemented, whilst the council has launched a campaign to encourage residents and tourists not to leave discarded food on the streets for the birds. Benidorm councillor, Juanjo Mascarell, explained the problems facing t h e town: “There has been a general colonization of seagulls in all cities, caused by several factors, including ease of finding food in any garbage container, the proliferation of uncontrolled landfills around the cities” He said. “In addition, discarded remains from fishing boats, people leaving food on the street to feed cats and large, unused
roof terraces where they can nest without any hassle, means they have all the food they want as they can adapt to any habitat.” He explained. Another serious consequence of this invasion of seagulls is the threat they pose to other birds of more vulnerable species, such as the Paino Europeo, of which the yellow-legged gull is the main predator.
Watch your water
Benitachell and Teulada-Moraira have urged residents to monitor their water consumption this summer, collaborating with Hidraqua to bring about awareness with an exclusive campaign. The campaign – ‘NO WATER, no life, no green, no blue’ carries the message ‘every drop counts’ and features a poster designed by Valencian artist Luis Montolio. Montolio is famous in Valencia for his many installations throughout the city.
LGBT exhibition in Denia
Open until the end of July, ‘The road to equality - 30 years of struggle for LGBT rights in the Spanish State’ exhibition in Denia tackles the history of LGBT activism, ranging from the first manifestations in the 1970s to the present day. The travelling exhibition created by the Madrid association COGAM was inaugurated last Wednesday in the Joves Art Room on Ronda Murallas and presents three decades of history visualised across 16 different panels with more than 100 photographs, posters and press cuttings from various public and private documentation centres.
Mammograms for the under 45’s
Javea resident Maria Ferrer Miralles visited the President of Les Corts Valencianes, the main legislative body of the Generalitat Valenciana on Wednesday. Maria, a cancer activist, travelled to Valencia with Javea’s Councillor of Health, Pilar Zamora to deliver some 200,000 signatures collected requesting mammograms for women under 45 years who have a history of breast cancer in their family. Maria met with representatives of all the parliamentary groups and eagerly awaits response from the campaign.

Trump tweets help to terminally ill UK infant by Staff Reporter U.S. President Donald Trump offered help to terminally ill UK infant Charlie Gard in a Twitter post earlier this week, after Charlie’s parents lost a legal battle to take him to the United States for experimental therapy. 11-month-old Charlie has been at the centre of a long legal battle between his parents, who wanted him to undergo American experimental therapy and specialists at a hospital in London who said the treatment was merely experimental and would not help. ‘If we can help little #CharlieGard, as per our friends in the U.K. and the Pope, we would be delighted to do so,’ Trump tweeted on Monday morning. Charlie suffers from mitochondrial disease - a rare genetic disorder that has left him unable to move his arms, legs or breathe unaided. The disease causes progressive muscle weakness and brain damage. It was unclear how the U.S. president would propose to help in the case. Charlie’s parents, Chris Gard and Connie Yates launched a fundraising appeal on GoFundMe.com to help pay for his medical bills in the United States. To date, they have raised £1.3 million (€1.48 million) from more than 83,000 donations. The Supreme Court of the United Kingdom ruled last month that going to the United States for treatment would prolong Charlie’s suffering without any realistic prospect of helping him. The court would not allow an American doctor found by the couple to be identified and details regarding the therapy were not available.

The parents asked the European Court of Human Rights to overturn the ruling, but the court declined to intervene last week. Trump’s tweet came a day after Pope Francis said: ‘The Holy Father is following the case of little Charlie Gard with affection and emotion and expresses his closeness to his parents. He is pray-
ing for them, hoping that their desire to accompany and care for their own child to the end is not ignored,’ according to statement from the Vatican on Sunday. UK Prime Minister Theresa May's spokesman, asked about the Trump tweet by the English press, said it was a very sensitive case and their thoughts are with Charlie’s family.
Ongoing investigations
At the time of printing, police investigations are ongoing to ascertain the cause of death of the man found in the Arenal area of Javea last week. The man, aged around 40 is thought to have been dead for up to 10 days when found in a home on Avenida de la Fontana last Tuesday morning. Witnesses told the Spanish press that an alarm had been raised after neighbours reported a strong smell in the area.
Hanging from a telegraph pole in Javea Denia firefighters rescued a telecommunications engineer in Javea on Tuesday morning from the telegraph pole on which he was working in the El Tosalet urbanisation. Officers from the Policia Local and the Guardia Civil arrived on the scene followed by an ambulance. Medics confirmed the engineer had suffered suspension trauma. Suspension trauma, also known as harness hang syndrome (HHS), or orthostatic intolerance, is an effect which occurs when the human body is held upright without any movement for a period of time. If the person is strapped into a harness or tied to an upright object they will eventually faint. If one faints but remains vertical, one risks death due to one's brain not receiving the oxygen it requires. The ambulance took the engineer straight from Hospital de Denia-MarinaSalud where he remained under observation.

BA cabin crew begin 16-day strike
by Tahnee Wright Some British Airways cabin crew began a 16-day strike on Saturday in a prolonged pay dispute. Members of BA's ‘mixed fleet’ cabin crew - those who work on both long-haul and short-haul flights - have been in conflict with the company since last year over wage offers which the Unite trade union has described as ‘poverty pay’. Despite the pay dispute being resolved, Unite said the walkout is in response to sanctions on union members
involved in previous industrial action - 1,400 mixed fleet members who had been on strike previously having seen bonus payments and travel concessions removed. ‘Customers will take a dim view and a great British brand risks being further tarnished. We call on British Airways to drop the threats and drop the sanctions and resolve this long-running dispute,’ Unite national officer Oliver Richardson said in a statement. The mixed fleet staff make up about a third of the BA's total cabin crew of
around 16,000, although not all members of the crew will take action. BA again warned of ‘consequences’ for those who went on strike, but said all customers would reach their destinations. ‘We have set out the consequences for crew if they take strike action,’ they said in a statement, adding ‘the purposes of these consequences are to encourage crew to come to work.’ A full schedule will run from Gatwick and London City, while a small number of Heathrow services will be merged, BA said.
William and Harry re-dedicate Diana’s grave British Princes William and Harry attended a private service last Saturday to re-dedicate the grave of their mother Princess Diana on what would have been her 56th birthday. The service took place at Diana's resting place on the Althorp Estate, her family's ancestral home in central England, where the princes were joined by William's wife Kate and members of Diana's family. The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, the spiritual leader of the Anglican Communion conducted the ceremony. With the 20th anniversary of her death approaching, both William, 35 and Harry, 32, have spoken publicly about the impact that losing their mother has had on their lives. Both princes have become prominent mental health campaigners and William said in April the shock of losing his mother still lingered. ‘You never get over it, it's such an unbelievably big moment in your life that it never leaves you. You just learn to deal with it,’ he said. Meanwhile, Harry said he had come close to a ‘complete breakdown’ on several occasions and had sought counselling in his late twenties to help deal with the grief of losing Diana.

Men take on the cobbles in Madrid WorldPride race by Tahnee Wright Men taped stiletto-heeled shoes to their feet and raced down a narrowcobbled street in Madrid last Thursday as part of the city's WorldPride festival, one of the world's largest LGBT pride celebrations. Competitors in the annual maleonly event ran under rainbow bunting, cheered on by crowds clutching pink balloons who lined the street in Chueca, a gay neighbourhood in the capital. Rules state that mens' heels must be at least 10 centimetres (4 inches) high and the shoes are measured before the race. Many men donned wigs and skirts for the event, while a few increased the challenge by running the 100 metres or so wearing platform boots. The race is part of the WorldPride Madrid festival, which also features concerts and other events to celebrate diversity.

13 women freed from Bulgarian prostitution ring Spanish police reported on Tuesday to have broken up a Bulgarian gang that sought the ‘total control’ of prostitution on the coast of Marbella. The operation, carried out in cooperation with Bulgarian police and the European Union law enforcement agency Europol, led to the arrests of 34 alleged members of the gang and the ‘liberation’ of 13 victims who were forced into prostitution, police said in a statement. The gang is suspected of recruiting young women in deprived areas of Bulgaria - the EU’s poorest country - and bringing them to Spain, forcing them to work as prostitutes in the streets of Puerto Banus, the luxury marina and casino complex near Marbella. ‘If they refused they were violently attacked and their family members in Bulgaria were threatened with harm’ the statement said. Adding that women who had left behind children in Bulgaria were ‘especially sensitive’. Police said the gang also forced the women to steal credit cards and other valuables from clients, suspecting some women of having drugged the men to make this easier. Police began their investigation in September 2014 after a Bulgarian woman told officers in Marbella that she had escaped from people who were forcing her to work as a prostitute. ‘The probe allowed investigators to prove that the first exploiters who were found did not act alone, but were part of an enormous international network that operated mainly in Spain and Bulgaria and whose aim was to achieve the total control of prostitution on the coast of Marbella,’ the police statement said. Officers arrested 26 of the suspected members of the gang in Spain and eight in Bulgaria, searching 36 locations in the two countries.

by Tahnee Wright Spain's more than 6,000 stevedores called time on their month-long nationwide strike last Thursday in which they protested potential job losses in the wake of the ports reform. The workers stopped striking after reaching a deal with employers that protects jobs but lowers salaries. The ports reform was demanded by the European Union and passed through parliament in mid-May, deregulating the hiring of dock workers. Under the previous system, domestic or foreign companies could only hire workers to load and unload ships in Spain from specific, already-established organisations that provide personnel and no other firms. The ports reform allows companies to contract workers wherever they want
- which employers argue will increase the competitiveness of Spanish ports. Unions argued the ports reform threatened jobs. A meeting in Madrid between labour unions and industry association Anesco ‘resulted in an agreement between the parties’, the two sides said in a joint statement. Anesco member firms have pledged to protect the jobs of ‘100 percent of the workers’ who load and unload ships at Spanish ports, the statement added. In exchange for keeping their jobs the unions accepted a reduction in the wages of the dockers of ‘up to 10 percent’, a member of the UGT Estiba union told the Spanish press. Man extradited from Spain on sexual assault charges does a runner
A man who was charged with sexual assault after being extradited to Ireland from Spain failed to appear in court last week and a warrant for his arrest has now been issued. The man was charged last year with sexual assault against one victim, which is alleged to have occurred more than 20 years ago. He had been questioned last year by police in Spain, where he was living and escorted back to Ireland last April to face charges. In 2016, his solicitor told the court that his client denied all charges. On June 26 this year, the man was due back in the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin, but he failed to appear in court. His solicitor confirmed to the Irish press that his client did not turn up for court last week and that a bench warrant was issued for his arrest. Irish police are now trying to establish the man’s whereabouts.

Arrested ‘Most dangerous jihadist in Spain’ A Danish man arrested in Spain on suspicion of fighting with Islamic State (ISIS) jihadists in Syria was planning to buy weapons in the country, the interior ministry said on Monday. Ahmed Samsam, 27, who was detained last Friday in Malaga and put under official investigation last weekend, is suspected of having fought in the ranks of ISIS for more than three years. In a statement, the ministry said photos posted on social networks showed him holding weapons and explosives, along with symbols of the jihadist group, whose control over parts of Syria and Iraq is being eroded by US-backed fighters in Syria and Iraqi forces respectively. ‘An expert in handling weapons and explosives, he was about to acquire weapons and bulletproof vests in Spain,’ it said. Police have not said whether the suspect planned to commit an attack in Spain. The interior ministry said last Saturday that officers were searching seized equipment in order to shed light on his intentions and find out who he had been in contact with. According to the ministry, Samsam's relatives thought ‘he was ready to take a step further in his terrorist activity in Europe’. ‘The fact that he returned from a conflict zone, combined with his experience in using arms and explosives, as well as the important degree of radicalisation and his current interest in buying weapons make him one of the most dangerous jihadists among those arrested in Spain,’ it said.
Three UK NHS buildings fail fire safety tests
ThE British National Health Service said on Tuesday that three of its organisations had reported having buildings which had failed safety tests launched after the devastating fire in London social housing block Grenfell Tower killed at least 80 people. ‘Samples of ACM (aluminium composite material) cladding taken from three providers have failed combustibility tests,’ said NHS Improvement, which oversees NHS trusts serving particular regions. ‘The three providers that have failed ACM tests are taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety of those buildings and occupants, in line with updated fire safety guidance issued by NHS Improvement,’ it said in a statement.

Spain's Foreign Minister, Alfonso Dastis says that all European Union members need to discuss Italy's proposal for other countries in the bloc to open their ports to ships carrying rescued migrants. Dastis told the Spanish press in Madrid on Monday that ‘our position is that exceptional situations require exceptional measures as a response, but they need to be discussed among all countries.’ taly has pleaded for help as thousands of migrants and refugees pour onto its shores. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, condemned an ‘unfolding tragedy’ in the country. Dastis added that Spain ‘hasn't received a formal request’ top open its ports. He said that he expected the issue to be discussed by EU interior ministers and foreign ministers at separate meetings later this week.

Full moon walking: From Guadalest to the sea CAMINATA NOCTURNA, a guided night walk from Guadalest to Altea, will this year take place under the light of a full moon. The walk, which takes place on Saturday August 5, is scheduled to coincide, just as it did last year, with a brilliant full moon and is suitable for anyone with a moderate level of fitness. The 20km slightly downhill route, takes in the wide riverbeds of the Guadalest and Algar Rivers, an unspoiled nature area, where nispero, orange, lemon, avocado and even pomegranate plantations appear as silhouettes between the long areas of jungle-like vegetation. Every year, there is always a smooth breeze caused by the humidity in riverbeds at night as the walkers head down the valleys to join the coast on the beach at Cap NegretAltea around four hours later Facilities at the walk,organised by the Valencian Delegation of the Spanish Nordic Walking Federation FENWA,in collaboration with Marco Polo Expediciones, include a reception tent, two all-terrain cars, ambulance anda overall coordinator and Nordic Walking poles are freely available for use by experienced Nordic Walkers. All participants on the walk, now in it’s tenth year, will be carried by coach from Altea up to the Guadalest dam, where the fitter amongst the walkers
will begin their 20 km hike downhill. The remainder of the walkers will start a little further downstream to begin their 15km descent to the sea below. This year’s walk will be even more spectacular as the famous Castell de L’ollafirework display, the third biggest in Spain, takes place on the same evening, so hikers will be treated to views of the amazing pyrotechnics in the distance as they walk towards the beach. The minimum age for participants is 12 years of age, with no upper age limit, but everyone must wear good quality walking shoes and carry a head torch. Nits de Castell Summer nights city
NINETEEN stalls selling local craftwork and accessories from around the world have set up home for the summer in Benidorm. The Nits de Castell craft market stalls have taken over Plazas Castelar, Santa Ana and Honor, which surround the Mirador de Castell viewpoint at the point of the old town and will sell their products every evening until the small hours. Three more stalls than last year are selling their wares than previous years and ten of the craftsmen live in Benidorm. In addition, two local charities, Association of Handicapped Benidorm (ASMIBE) and the Association of Rare Diseases of Benidorm and district (Aerbeco), will also set up fundraising stalls.

Last Saturday, Luis Santos – who has been a member of Javea’s Rotary Club for some 22 years – assumed the position of Rotary Governor of District 2203 in an inaugaration ceremony held at Hotel Denia La Sella Golf Resort & Spa attended by over 150 people. Santos will govern the district - consisting of 77 clubs and 1670 Rotarians - including clubs in the regions of Andalusia, Murcia, Valencia, Balearic Islands, Ceuta and Melilla across 2017/ 2018.
With the arrival of July comes the arrival of the annually anticipated weekly ‘It Market’ in Javea. Last Saturday, the first It Market of the summer was held at Montgo Di Bongo on Avenida del Mediterraneo with twenty stalls showcasing clothing, accessories, children’s clothing, homewares, jewellery and art. by Staff Reporter One of the major problems facing the young people of Spain is not drugs or alcohol or any of the other headline grabbing anti-social activities it is unemployment. With various authorities quoting figures such as “More than 50% of teens and twenties are unemployed and facing poor prospects of finding a job” It was therefore very gratifying for the Grant-a-Wish boutique in Javea to play a small part in helping four youngsters improve their chances. The Boutique gathers quality goods and resells then on behalf of underprivileged children in our community and the operation is an excellent example of how a retail establishment operates. So, the GAW Team welcomed Jade, Lauren, Mason and Stijn, year 10 students from XIC who had volunteered to do internships in retail. The team had designed a two-week programme designed to cover all aspects in an intense manner, leaving little time for any of the regular activities associated with today’s social media culture. No texts. No Facebook. No Twitter. Instead the foursome was faced with training and firsthand experience in all aspects from customer service in Spanish and English to cashing-up. They also covered risk assessment, health and safety and completing spreadsheets. There were additional modules arranged for First Aid training and CV writing and following this Internship period, they each have one additional item to add to their CVs. GAW Boutique has only been open for 6 months so this was the first foray into offering work experience but it certainly won’t be the last. Our regular team really enjoyed working with the youngsters and Mrs Phillips, Head Teacher XIC said "This has been a great opportunity for our students to learn

If you have lost a deposit when a property developer went bust, help may be at hand A COMPANY set up to act for those who have lost money due to Spanish construction company liquidation expects to recover millions of euros for clients. Spanish Legal Reclaims has used a number of highly experienced lawyers and financial experts to study the effects of a law which gives those who have lost money when making deposits on properties a possibility to recover their losses. During the boom years, many expatriates from all over Europe as well as Spanish nationals flocked to put down deposits on properties before they were built, anxious to ensure that they would own a brand new apartment or house. When the depression hit, one of the biggest areas of loss was in the property construction business and many companies all across Spain went under without completing the work and leaving individuals out of pocket from any amounts from €20,000 to €200,000 or even more. When this happened, many of the people affected took legal action against property developers. Most of them won the court cases but, as developers had no money left the claimants received nothing except lawyer’s fees. Most were convinced that these - in many cases devastating – losses were final and there was no chance of ever recovering any of the money involved, but the Spanish Supreme Court which can work slowly, recognised the problem and a relatively recent ruling has opened the door to the possibility of obtaining refunds from the banks involved which do have the funds to pay claimants. It has been decided that if a bank accepted a deposit in respect of a new build property, they had a responsibility to protect those funds by way of bank guarantees, separate insurance policies or placing the funds in escrow accounts. If the bank did this, then money would be safe but if they
didn’t -as happened in most cases -then they can be sued for a refund of that money. This is where Spanish Legal Reclaims comes in as they are prepared to review each case on its merits and if there appears to be a good chance of recovering funds, they will take on the case on a no win no fee basis. Their legal experts and financial advisers will have to undertake a great deal of work to establish liability, especially as many as 60 per cent of all who lost money paid their deposits to lawyers rather than directly to the banks. This company however has established an almost fool proof method of tracing the funds- even if deposits were made more than 10 years ago - and actually establishing which bank was involved in the transaction. So far, acting for a number of people from different countries, the company - which has experts fluent in most languages – has already won several cases in court which are now awaiting appeal from the banks. As the legal system in Spain is slow, they can’t show large numbers of cash refunds although they have had a small number when the banks overlooked making an appeal but they are confident that in the majority of cases, a first decision by a court will be upheld on appeal. They must be confident as all of this work has been done without any charge to customers! Banks are rich and they generally employ the best lawyers but if the law is in favour of the victim and those acting for that victim know what they are doing, the likelihood of success is great. Second ‘summer serenade’ concert goes down a storm Stephen Lemon of the Ermita del Popul in Javea wrote to RTN to describe the ‘truly beautiful and memorable evening’ enjoyed at the church recently as Javea’s Anglican Church presented their second ‘Summer Serenade’ concert: ‘On Saturday June 17, Javea’s Anglican Church presented their second ‘Summer Serenade’ concert in the Ermita del Popul on the Javea- Jesus Pobre road. This lovely little church was full to capacity to hear beautiful music performed by the small choir, Music Unlimited. Founded in April 2012 by Joanna Baldwin, Music Unlimited presented an extremely varied programme of musical styles covering seven centuries of choral compositions. Although most of the items were sung acapella, a few pieces were accompanied brilliantly on the organ by Nick Hale. Beginning with a 14th century French round (canon), the choir progressed through 17th-18th century motets and madrigals to 19th century anthems. In honour of the Queen’s official birthday that day, the choir included Hubert Parry’s anthem, ‘I Was Glad’ which has been sung on so many royal occasions. Friends from the Montgo Chorale joined with Music Unlimited to help swell the glorious sound of this famous anthem. The concert continued with a selection of 20th century secular pieces and the programme concluded with a traditional Irish Blessing. Afterwards, as the evening sun dipped down behind the trees, everyone enjoyed an al fresco reception of Cava and a tempting array of canapes, all organised by the committee members of the Javea church.’ Submitted by Stephen Lemon The concert and reception raised €802 to support the work of the Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy. I had the weirdest of dreams last night. More of a nightmare really. In it, the RTN team decided they wanted someone to answer questions they were receiving in ever-increasing numbers from people visiting the Costas. After much debate, it was decided that I should be the one to deal with them. Reluctantly, I agreed. After trawling through a bunch of barmy queries, I bashed out my first “Ask Uncle Barry” column. Tracy, Blackpool: My mum, dad and I got on a bus heading from La Cala to Benidorm central, but the driver refused to take a €50 note. Then a pushy little man with a white goatee shoved us out the way, paid our fares with some sort of travel card, and told us that we could repay him at the end of the journey by buying him tobacco. When we got off the bus, he marched us to a fag shop and made us pay almost €9.00 for a pouch of Golden Virginia. As the total bus fare for the three of us would have been €4.50 we reckon we were ripped off by a conman. Uncle Barry: The “pushy little man”, Tracy, was me. Your dad was holding up the bloody bus, and it didn’t help that he was being extremely rude to the driver. Only an imbecile would tender a €50 note on a bus. Getting your dad to buy me the tobacco was my way of teaching him a lesson. Kayleigh, Bolton: We came to Benidorm at Easter and could not believe how packed the streets were with foreigners. Is there a good time to come to the resort and not have to mix with people all waffling in foreign? Uncle Barry: The last time I checked an atlas, Kayleigh, Benidorm was in Spain. So, not surprisingly, the streets, bars and restaurants were full of SPANISH people. If you only want to hear English spoken I suggest you go to Scarborough for your holidays. Or the Falklands. Tony, Southend: When we were in Torremolinos, the missus threw a shoe at my head as I was standing on the first floor balcony of our holiday apartment. I ducked. It flew into the street and hit a fella with a white goatee on his bald bonce.
Instead of throwing it back to me, he walked off with it. It was one of a pair of brand-new loafers. Are all people in Spain so rude? Uncle Barry: The “fella with a white goatee” was me, Tony. That shoe hurt. I carried it half a mile down the road, and dropped it in a garbage bin. If you feel compelled to have drunken rows with your “missus” in public, expect to suffer the consequences. Chantelle, Barking: I was walking with some friends along the beachfront when a tree came out of nowhere and I was knocked on my butt by a low branch. Can I sue Benidorm council for allowing dangerous impediments to take root in public places? Uncle Barry: You can try, Chantelle, but you’ll find that Spain does not have the same compensation culture as the US and Britain, so you have as much chance of getting a payout as the Pope has of falling pregnant. In future, watch where you’re walking! At this point I awoke in a cold sweat, and vowed that if anyone ever asks me to become proper “agony uncle” I’ll take a dive off of my 31st floor balcony.

Car Insurance and Green Card International Insurance Card The Green Card or International Insurance Card is an internationally recognised document that proves the holder has the minimum compulsory insurance required by law of the country visited. It helps facilitate the movement of their vehicle across international borders. It also guarantees that victims of road traffic accidents involving foreign registered vehicles are compensated in the country of the accident. The Green Card System The Green Card System comprises of over 40 countries. National vehicle organisations within the Green Card System including the EU, the EEA, Switzerland, Russia and several countries around the Middle East and North Africa. However, a Green Card is not required to travel through the EEA, Andorra, Norway, Croatia and Switzerland. The Green Card Bureau Each Green Card Bureau is responsible for handling and guaranteeing the settling of claims arising from traffic accidents caused by visiting motorists. Travelling outside the EU If you are travelling outside the European Community to one of the countries listed as requiring a Green Card, you will need to ask your insurance company to issue you a Green Card beforehand. Road accident If you’re involved in a road traffic accident in a country requiring a Green Card, make sure the police are called to the scene of the accident. You will need a copy of the police report. If you don’t understand what you’re being told, request an interpreter. We also advise that you contact your insurance company as soon as possible, whether you want to make a claim or not. Make notes of what happened. Take photographs of the accident, including plates of vehicles involved. Exchange insurance details as you would in Spain. Take down the names and addresses of any witnesses. Never admit liability or apologise.

The world has changed beyond recognition in my lifetime. The English novelist L. P Hartley penned those immortal words, “The past is a foreign country. They do things differently there.” My generation journeyed in a time machine to a foreign country. Frankly, it is a bewildering place. George Orwell’s novel, 1984, is no longer in the library’s fiction department. In 1949 the prophet accurately described the all-seeing Big Brother mediamanipulated nightmare world we have inherited. Less well known is Edgar Cayce (1877 – 1945). The American mystic’s prophecies were so many and accurate they simply cannot be dismissed as coincidence. His readings accurately foretold the Great Depression of 1929, events relating to both world wars; even the deaths of two U.S Presidents. As these foresights are now in the past they can only be a source of wonder to us. But, it should be a matter of interest that Cayce foretold of events yet to occur. During his readings the seer correctly described our ‘brave new world’. Remember, back then, everything we now take for granted was the stuff of science fiction and fantasy. It was a time when no one could have predicted the collapse of the Soviet colossus. When in 1932 Cayce was questioned about political and economic trends in future Europe he zeroed in on Russia. He saw Europe as a disintegrating region. Cayce also foretold of nations controlled by a manipulative cultish global elite and their banking cartels. The American described a post-Communist Russia as being ‘a thorn in the side of financial powers that were organising themselves against the good of humanity.’ He described a Europe of electorally neutered people mismanaged ‘for the gratification of a few, irre-
spective of any other man’s right’. Can anyone better describe the European Union today? Anti-globalist Marine le Pen sums it up; “the divide is no longer between right and left, but between the patriots and the globalists’. Cayce talked of Europe being reborn phoenix-like and in his prophecies Russia plays a pivotal role. Without question, post-Communist Russia has reinvented itself. Independent and forging the world’s greatest trading blocs Putin’s Russia outmanoeuvres and outguns the West. Meanwhile, Washington and its European vassals are asphyxiated by perpetual bondage to banks and receivership whilst their trading options diminish by the day. There is nothing that is happening today that wasn’t accurately prophesied by Edgar Cayce. He did predict that a Third World War
was possible. But, without elaborating, he said before he passed away, “In Russia there comes hope in the world not as that as sometimes termed of the Communistic, or Bolshevik, no; but freedom, freedom.”

The lack of courtesy and service in some of the business establishments on the Costa is appalling. But there is a rudeness that offends and a rudeness that can sometimes be regarded as amusing and eccentric behaviour, and it reminded me recently of some pub landlords I have encountered in the UK. One landlord in Falmouth had a hatred of Londoners, but nobody seemed to know the reason why.
An acquaintance of mine had a friend visit him from London and took him for a meal at the establishment in question and because of his obvious cockney accent, he was warned about engaging the publican in conversation. After they had eaten, their host made his way over to ask if everything had been to their satisfaction, at which point the Londoner, in spite of his friend’s advice, asked why it was that he disliked people from that city so much. The place went deathly quiet as the landlord, a large man, rested his meaty arms on the table, and almost nose to nose, hissed, “Do you see this”, pointing to his bald head. “Your lot were evacuated here during the war and brought their head lice with ‘em. I had nice curly hair in those days, but I had to have it shaved off and it never grew back. Does that answer your question?” Another publican of my acquaintance in Fowey, had a particular aversion to anyone he termed ‘La-di-da’. He had one of those pie warmers on the counter, the ones with a slowly revolving rack, and when a customer hailed him thus: “I say my man, are those pasties hot?” back came the reply: “They ought t’be boy, they’ve bin in there for three weeks!” Years later in a neighbouring village in Suffolk, there was a character that had become infamous with a Basil Fawlty type reputation. Nevertheless people would come from miles around to eat and drink at his establishment, a very pretty olde worlde inn. We took some friends one evening who had never visited the pub, then having perused the menu one of them asked what the sirloin steak was like. Having just served an adjoining table, the landlord pirouetted and without a word, whipped the plate away from under the startled diner’s nose and plonked it down on our table. “Like that” he said smoothly, before returning the plate to the disbelieving customer. Real characters you see, can get away with it.

All too often British people living in Spain assume that Spanish banks operate in a similar way to the UK. This may not be the case. Some estate agents suggest that in today’s current market, many people looking to sell a Spanish property will have had to reduce the price of their property to be able to conclude a sale. With all the associated costs and taxes that need to be paid out, maximising the amount of Sterling that you finally receive for your euros is vital. Clients need to be aware of two important factors that can affect you when converting your euros into Sterling and moving those funds out of Spain.
2. Exchange rate and repatriation The agreed sale price of a property is often based on the amount of Sterling that the seller hopes to receive, according to the exchange rate at that time. However, a Notary / completion date can take place some weeks, or even months, after the contract of sale has been signed. Unemployment in Spain lowest in 8 years Spain's unemployment figure hit its lowest level in eight years in June, figures from the Spanish Ministry of Employment and Social Security showed on Tuesday. The number of unemployed dropped by 98,317 persons to 3.36 million, which the ministry said was the lowest level in the past eight years. On a seasonally adjusted basis, the decline was 21,668 persons. On a year-on-year basis, the unemployment figure fell by 404,243 persons, which was the largest annual decline for June ever recorded. Unemployment among 15-24-year-old Spanish declined by 16.5 per cent. In June, the construction sector recorded the biggest fall in unemployment. A record 2.1 million job contracts were registered during June, up 8.81 per cent from a year ago. Of these, 166,462 were short-term contracts for temporary jobs, up 12.17 per cent year-on-year. Such contracts have risen for 41 months in a row, the ministry noted. Separately, the ministry announced that the number of those registered within the social security system, viewed as a measure of job creation, rose by 87,692 persons to 18.4 million.

Just as we were expecting to be winding down for a long hot summer, Chorus has experienced an influx of people coming to see us to have their existing investments and pensions reviewed.
One such gentleman, we’ll call him Mr Smith, had a feeling all was not right with his portfolio. Around 18 months ago, Mr Smith’s advisor here in Spain had recommended he sell all the funds in his portfolio and buy a fantastic ‘exclusive’ fund his financial advisory’s company now had access to. To gain access to such a special fund would cost Mr Smith 5%, but Mr Smith was assured it would be worth it. 18 months later and Mr Smith hadn’t even covered that 5% entry charge, and despite strong markets his portfolio has gone down in value. So, what had happened? One tool I use to research funds is a website called Trustnet. This is the world’s largest independent analyst of funds, and always a good place to start if you want to do a little research yourself. This ‘fantastic’ fund Mr Smith had had his retirement pot put into was in fact number 295 out of 314 funds in that particular fund class… so in the worst 6% of funds available! Whilst the benchmark fund in that category had returned 45% over 5 years, this particular fund had only returned 14% over the same period. It also carried a risk factor around 20% higher than the average fund in this class, meaning the client had been
taking 20% more risk to make less than a third of the returns. Even worse was that this fund was costing a whopping 2% a year, with the average fund cost in that category around 0.5%. I just couldn’t understand why their financial advisor had recommend that fund!
After our meeting, I decided to call the Fund-house offering this fund to find out what possible reason Mr Smith’s current advisor had for recommending such a fund. It turned out that all of the 5% entry fee had gone to Mr Smith’s advisor, and that of the 2% annual fee, half was being paid as a hidden ‘trail’ to Mr Smith’s advisor each year. This practise is illegal in the UK, but sadly still practised by the majority of firms out here in Spain. I explained to Mr Smith that Chorus clients benefit from truly independent advice, and that when we choose funds for our clients we promise to never receive any fee from the fund provider. Be aware if you are going to buy a property in Spain
Here are a few guidelines when thinking of purchasing a property. • If the property is not registered most likely because it was illegally built. Many unregistered properties are being sold to foreigners, since foreigners are less likely to check the registration. If you find a bargain, chances are it's not registered. Solution: Get a registry listing (nota simple). • Too many brokers are involved. Be aware!!! We once had to speak to seven brokers to find out the actual facts about a house. Besides communication difficulties, each broker may be getting their percentage. Solution: Ask the broker for their contract with the owner. • The property was sold to more than one buyer. Yes, this happens. Either the buyer has intention to defraud, or they received a better offer and were unable to refuse. If there are two purchase agreements, the property belongs to the first person to register the property at the Property Registry. If you are the second person, then you have a right to indemnization from the seller, in addition to a return of your deposit. If you signed a pre-agreement (contrato de arras), then you have a right to receive double your deposit. • The new home is delivered late or with defects. During the 2005-2007 boom, many if not most developers were selling houses before they were built. After the closing, it was all too common that the property was completed long after the agreed upon time period. Solution: the contract must establish a required completion deadline. If the deadline is not met, the seller agrees to return all payments that the buyer has made, including interest plus additional costs caused by the delay. If the seller is not willing to include that in the contract, you should strongly reconsider whether you want to continue. Another common case is that the new home is delivered with changes to the plan or with defects. Once the buyer has signed the contract, the description and architectural plan has the value of a contract. If it is the buyer who makes changes to the plan, these should be put in writing. If the property has defects, the developer is obliged to repair them. In such cases, we recommend hiring an architect, who can help determine the importance of the defect and the cost to fix it. Negatives, questions and “you” forms
First of all we need to check last week’s homework. Here are the sentences I asked you to translate, with the right answers.
I don’t want to speak English. “No quiero hablar inglés” I’m not going to open the door. “No voy a abrir la puerta” I can’t cook very well. “No puedo cocinar muy bien” I need to work a little. “Necesito trabajar un poco”. The first three sentences are negative and therefore start with “No” despite the fact that in each of the English sentences the negatives are formed in three different ways. Obviously in these articles we can’t hear the spoken sentences, but one thing to point out here is that when one word ends in a vowel sound and the next word begins with a vowel sound, they run together when spoken. So “quiero hablar”, would sound like “quieroablar” (as the letter H is silent) and “voy a abrir” would become “voyabrir” with the two “a” sounds merging together. It’s important to get practice at tuning in to spoken Spanish so that you can start recognizing these features of the language. Now let’s see what else we can do
with the words we have covered so far. We have learnt that “I words” (QUIERO, PUEDO, NECESITO, VOY A) can go in front of infinitive verbs to form really useful sentences about what we want, need, can or are going to do. We have also seen that by placing the word “no” in front, we can make these sentences negative. Now we are going to see how these same basic forms can be turned into questions. This is incredibly easy; in fact it’s so easy people are inclined not to believe it and try to complicate things. To make these sentences into questions, all you have to do is give your voice a questioning intonation. When writing we place a question mark at the end and an upside down question mark at the beginning of the sentence, to indicate the same thing. For example: PUEDO ABRIR LA PUERTA means “I can open the door”. If I say exactly the same sentence making my voice sound questioning, I’ve changed it to “Can I open to the door?” which is written in Spanish ¿PUEDO ABRIR LA PUERTA? Yes, it really is that simple! Let’s see what else we can do. “PUEDO VOLVER MAÑANA” “I can return tomorrow.” “¿PUEDO VOLVER MAÑANA?”

“I need to drink a lot of water” “¿NECESITO BEBER MUCHA AGUA?” “Do I need to drink a lot of water? Obviously in the case of ¿Quiero? (Do I want?) and ¿Voy a? (am I going to?) it is more difficult to find sentences that make sense, so as a special little bonus today we will learn the words for “You want” and “You are going to” – which can instantly be used to mean “Do you want?” and “Are you going to?” “You want” is “QUIERES” and “you are going to” is “VAS A” so therefore: “Do you want to cook?” is “¿QUIERES COCINAR?” “Are you going to sleep?” is “¿VAS A DORMIR?” Just to recap what we have just done – QUIERO means “I want”, and by changing the final letter we can turn
it into QUIERES meaning “you want”. Something similar happens with VOY A “I’m going to”, we can turn it into “VAS A” to mean “you are going to”. I think I should mention as well, that these refer to an informal “you”, as in Spanish we can be formal and informal in the way we address people. However nowadays in Spain these distinctions are not so important so we’ll talk in more detail about that later. This all might sound rather simple, but you may not have yet realized just what potential we have opened up already, just by learning these small changes. It is not necessary to learn all the whys and wherefores of how verbs change in order to start forming all kinds of sentences! So far we have only used six verbs and six “I” or “you” expressions so I think next week we’ll need some more verbs and other simple words to spread the net even wider. In the meantime though – here’s your homework: What do these mean in English? No quiero volver a casa hoy. ¿Quieres bailar conmigo? Voy a hablar con mi amigo. ¿Vas a beber vino? Lou's Homecoming by Stephan A. Onisick "Sometimes, art echoes life. The uncanny death of the guest actor in the episode (Remember Me from Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman)resonated deeply within me. It paralleled the deaths of my father and half-brother, Lou." Stephan works as a Sharepoint Developer with Analytical Mechanics Associate contracted to NASA's International Space Station in Huntsville. This story goes back twenty years to 1997 when the first episode of "Lou's Homecoming" was written. Twenty years down the line the draft was revisited, expanded and finally published as an ebook. It was January 1989. Our author was 38, married and living in Birmingham, Alabama when he received an unexpected call from someone called Lou Onisick claiming to be a relative. Stephan's father had been born in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania in 1912. He had worked down the coal mines. His parents had come from Ukraine and they lived in a Polish community. It seemed that the father had been married before and Stephan was aware of having a halfbrother called John. The father had Parkinson's disease and dementia and was living in a nursing home in West Virginia in declining health. Lou had been trying to contact his father. He was 8 when his father left home. He was now 54. Father had provided some child support for Lou and his brother Bill which "could never have satisfied a boy's need for his father." plant engineer for a valve company and worked in the same factory as his brother Bill, outside of Charlotte. Stephan was protective of his mother initially who he described as a worrier and a doom and gloomer. He didn't want to mention his newly acquired half-brothers until they had made further contact and planned a visit which was arranged weeks later. Photos were exchanged and a few calls made. The meeting of this extended family caused nerves and anxiety as well as excitement for Stephan and no doubt the others. Although Stephan describes his family in a positive way he seems more at ease with the family pets. "Dogs may be the best part of our shared hereditary." He informs us of his preference for dogs rather than people. Perhaps it's just this: "Their needs are simple, and their agendas are hilariously obvious." We are told about Lou's "uncanny" resemblance to his father, although he was slightly taller and more gentle. He was reserved but also described as being a devoted father and husband which Stephan states was not an Onisick inherited trait! We are told that he was loved and well-respected in his community. As you might expect, the family reunion proved to be an emotional experience considering that Lou had not seen his father for over 45 years. Father was "conscious in spurts" but seemed to recognize Lou who he described as a fire-
cracker which made Lou cry and the others were choked up emotionally. Peggy, his daughter told Stephan that Lou was a forgiving person and very even-tempered. "He didn't have a father model, but yet he became a model father." The ending is inevitably sad but there is a sense of closure and with that, a feeling of satisfaction and forgiveness when we are told that he "had made peace with his past." "Lou had the magnanimity to forgive a father who abandoned him." Perfectly readable but short. It is difficult to engage with Lou sadly because he seems flimsy and it would have been better to have discovered much more about the reasoning behind seeing father before he died and making his peace after such a long time. Angela and Claudia – Calpe’s new queens
Calpe’s ‘Queens of Fiestas’ were elected last Saturday at a gala on the plaza Mayor attended by over 2,000 people. The gala, organised by the Comision de Fiestas 2017, saw Angela Arlandis elected as the senior queen and Claudia Pastor
elected as the junior queen. Last year’s queens, Neus Ivars and Mara Crespo took to the stage to elect this year’s queens – drawing Angela’s name from a hat of 34 candidates aged 18 and Claudia’s name from a hat of 22 candidates aged 8.
The crowd roared with applause as the names were announced and the election was followed by speeches from the President of the Comision de Fiestas – Inma Estupina, Councillor of Fiestas – Ana Perles and Calpe Mayor – Cesar Sanchez.

Moraira-Teulada U3A break for the summer – after one final quiz! Approximately 40 members of the Moraira-Teulada U3A gathered before the association broke for the summer to enjoy the final quiz of the season at Sol Park followed by lunch at Restaurante Casa Lili. The quizzes have been organised for many years by Les Coughtree who, unfortunately, suffered a bad fall on the morning of the quiz and had to spend a couple of days in hospital. Frank Lee stepped in to take over the organisation and the quiz was well-run by husband and wife due Ron and Daisy Kenyon, who presented the prizes to the winning teams. The quiz is held every two weeks and is one of the many group events run by the members of MorairaTeulada U3A. Protorexics: men obsessed with protein INSTAGRAM, snapchat and even facebook are full of photos and selfies of half-naked, ripped, muscle guys, now high summer is well and truly upon us. The pressure on the rest of us mere mortals to achieve that perfect ‘Instabody’ is immense and something which can often make us go to extremes to get it. Steroids are one of the obvious ways to get instant results, but for those of us who prefer a more natural approach, a high protein, low carb dietary regime is our weapon of choice. So, are you one of those guys who carries a protein shake around you wherever you go during the day? Well you may be suffering from ‘protorexia’, a term coined to describe an unhealthy fixation with protein-heavy foods and supplements, such as protein shakes and chicken. When eaten as part of a balanced diet, protein allows our body to grow and repair itself. But is there a risk of becoming obsessed with protein to the extent that behaviour becomes symptomatic of an eating disorder? The term has been linked to orthorexia - a condition defined as an “unhealthy obsession with healthy eating”, which has yet to be formally recognised as an eating disorder. According to eating disorders charity Beat, much like ‘orthorexia’, protorexia is not a recognised eating disorder and we should be careful how we are using the term. Speaking to The Huffington Post UK, a spokesperson from Beat said placing severe restrictions on diet “is obviously not healthy and may be an indication of an eating disorder”. Studies suggest body-conscious individuals often begin consuming high levels of protein believing those with ripped torsos must be “healthy”, without realising the internal impact this may cause. But how can you recognise if your gym buddy is using protein shakes to simply improve their workout or if they’re part of a more serious, underlying issue? “Secretiveness around or preoccupation with food, becoming withdrawn, mood swings, low self-esteem, tiredness, and distorted perceptions of weight are some of the signs that someone might be developing some
form of eating disorder,” the spokesperson said. A British Diabetic spokesperson also told the Huffpost, that, by focusing on consuming a lot of one nutrient, such as protein, you are likely to be restricting other food groups such as carbohydrates. “This may lead to you missing out on other important parts of a diet, such as fibre,” she said. “Fibre is found in fruit, vegetables and wholegrains and is really important for a healthy digestive system.” She explained that protein may fill someone up so much that they are “unable to eat enough of the other things we need in our diet”. “Animal protein, often, contains saturated fat, so if people are increasing their protein intake using animal protein it may be detrimental to heart health, by increasing their intake of saturated fat,” she said. “There are risks of having an unbalanced diet including vitamin and mineral deficiencies and in the long term increasing the risk of developing chronic conditions.” Most of us get enough protein by eating a well-balanced diet and varying the foods we eat every day, so there is no need to worry too much about getting enough. Including two to three protein rich foods such as lentils, nuts, beans, meat or fish everyday is what the government recommends for good health.
Don’t shun the white bread Good news for lovers of white bread as a study suggests it may not be as bad for you as previously thought. Living in Spain we are surrounded by white bread, in supermarkets, panaderias, cafes, restaurants and tapas bars and often we give it a miss believing it is unhealthy for us. Processed white bread is often shunned by those looking to live a healthier lifestyle, but new research suggests that it may be just as healthy as brown bread. Researches from the Weizmann Institute of Science analysed the levels of fat, cholesterol and key vitamins and minerals in participants eating different breads and found very little difference between the two. Surprisingly, the investigators found the bread itself didn’t greatly affect the participants and that different people reacted differently to each bread type. During the study, 20 healthy individuals were divided into two groups and advised to incorporate a specific bread into their diet. Half the participants were given whole wheat sourdough bread to consume while the others were given the same portion of processed, packaged white bread. Wholewheat sourdough is a type of brown bread made through the natural fermentation of the yeast and bacteria found in flour. The study participants were instructed to consume a higher-than-usual amount of bread (around 25% of their calories, compared to the average bread consumption of 10%). The participants ate their first bread type for a week,
before a two-week resting period where no bread was consumed. After this, the breads for the two groups were reversed. Before the study and throughout the time it was ongoing, many health effects were monitored. These included wakeup glucose levels; levels of the essential minerals calcium, iron, and magnesium; fat and cholesterol levels; kidney and liver enzymes; and several markers for inflammation and tissue damage. The investigators also measured the makeup of the participants’ gut bacteria before, during, and after the study. The initial finding - and this was very much contrary to our expectation - was that there were no clinically
significant differences between the effects of these two types of bread on any of the parameters that we measured,” said Eran Segal, a computational biologist at the Weizmann Institute of Science and one of the study’s senior authors. “We looked at a number of markers, and there was no measurable difference in the effect that this type of dietary intervention had.” Surprisingly, the researchers found that different people responded to different breads in contrasting ways. About half the people had a better response to the processed, white flour bread, and the other half had a better response to the whole wheat sourdough. The lack of differences were only seen when all findings were averaged together. “The findings for this study are not only fascinating but potentially very important, because they point toward a new paradigm: different people react differently, even to the same foods,” said Eran Elinav, a researcher in the Department of Immunology at the Weizmann Institute and another of the study’s senior authors. “To date, the nutritional values assigned to food have been based on minimal science and one-size-fits-all diets have failed miserably.” He added: “These findings could lead to a more rational approach for telling people which foods are a better fit for them, based on their microbiomes [a group of microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses.”

Nevertheless, there are some long-term health conditions that call for a school that is specially equipped to ensure the child’s safety. You must always contact your child’s school to discuss how the situation will be managed. Your family doctor will advise you on the best way to inform the school and help decide the arrangements that must be made by the school, such as storing and administering medicines. Upon informing the school, you must include: Details of medicines and their proper administration Possible side effects Emergency situations: what to do and what not to do Special requirements (dietary needs) How often your child will be absent form school All in all, if the child’s condition can be correctly managed with minimal involvement from the school, this will be easier for you and the school. However, the school should have policies that determine how it manages medicines and long-term medical conditions. Staff members administering medicines ought to be fully trained, and the school must have an emergency contact number. Also, your school should help your child participate in physical activities and school trips whenever possible. It is vital your child should not feel left out due to their condition. They should feel like any other child, with the same opportunities as their friends and classmates.

Toothpaste - For quick relief from mosquito bites, try applying a small amount of all-natural peppermint or neem-based toothpaste - allow the paste to dry and leave for as long as desired.

Road Test - Range Rover Vogue SE TDV6
Few vehicles raise a smile in the way that a Range Rover does when you are behind the wheel, I find. It’s always an absolute privilege to find yourself sitting in the high quality cabin and it is a fantastic experience. Imagine your favourite armchair and then add all the electronic gadgetry that you can conjure up and here is a seat that can be electrically adjusted to your heart’s content providing that ultimate driving position. Then of course there is the sheer height of this luxury off roader, which stands head and shoulders above most other vehicles apart from lorries. This means that the driver and front passenger have a marvellous view of the road ahead, which is perfect for overtaking. Despite its sheer size and weight this 4x4 is pretty quick off the mark and if the accelerator is pushed to the floor it makes safe light work of most opportunities that present themselves on the open road. Zero to 60mph is accomplished in a little over seven seconds, which is very impressive. There are so many luxuries fitted to this vehicle that it makes a Rolls Royce blush. Shut the door and the Range Rover ensures that the door is properly closed as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. The two section boot opens and closes at the push of a button. This is all well and good but ironically, after reading a newspaper article about how a woman lost her arm in the door of a neighbour’s car, I come close to trapping mine in the boot of the Range Rover but thankfully escape with a light bruise. It seems to shut and continues even if a hand is in the way. There needs to be a sensor to prevent this from happening. I park the beast on my driveway which has a slight incline and on start up the suspension self-levels like Citroens of old; I love it. It’s actually easier to manoeuvre than some smaller vehicles too and even though there are blindspots these are easily overcome by the help of the reversing camera. However, there are too many beeps for my liking when reversing alongside obstacles which can be off-putting, I cannot find a way of turning these sounds off. I do like the cool box in the front centre armrest, which fits a good size beaker or bottle together with a few chocolate bars. The full length panoramic glass sunroof is a great addition because when the cover electronically slides back a vast amount of natural light fills the cabin. The sunroof electrically tilts and slides, too. At night there are some neat touches too especially the light that drops from the bottom of the wing mirror to create a perfect circle, ideal when arriving at your destination in the pitch black.
I put it through its paces with a trip to West Bay in Dorset. It’s only about 80 miles or so away from home which should be covered in an hour and a half but with so much traffic on our roads it takes more than double this time. Not to worry though because any frustration is easily erased in the Range Rover. My two daughters have their headphones on and are watching CBeebies on their televisions which are built into the back of the front headrests. There is a remote control inside the centre rear armrest. In Hampshire the reception is perfect and it is only when we get to the valleys of Dorset where we lose the signal and the little cherubs start to complain. It is helpful that the front passengers can listen to the radio at the same time as the rear passengers watch the TV. However when stationary and I try watching the news, I find I cannot do this but have to watch Mr Maker on CBeebies if I want my daughters to remain quiet. Front and rear occupants must watch the same channel. Like many an aristocrat, despite its fine credentials, it does feel just a little lethargic when sitting at a roundabout watching the world go by. When, finally, a gap in the traffic emerges and the accelerator is kicked to the floor there is a noticeable delay from the eight speed automatic transmission which is ever so slightly unnerving. But it quickly regains composure. Inside there are lots of cleverly designed cubbyholes particularly the ones underneath the driver and front passenger’s armrest on the door. Even the rear seats can be electrically adjusted and there are buttons in the boot to electronically fold the rear seats and operate the tow bar, making life very easy indeed. dial in the front centre console. Simply push it and it rises and then turn to the environment that you find yourself in. The Range Rover is a magnificent vehicle that copes just as well off road as it does on and is probably even happier blazing through a field than a flat motorway. Externally the vehicle is a design classic that has subtly evolved since its introduction in 1970. With its clean lines and large grille together with a striking side profile it cuts a dashing appearance that demands attention with many gazing longingly and performing double takes. Whether one is an extrovert or not this is a thoroughly impressive form of transport. Road test one today or regret it for evermore.

Decline in new car sales not a concern The UK new car market has declined for a third consecutive month with 243,454 new units registered in June, according to figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Registrations fell at a slower pace than in the previous two months, by -4.8%, as demand continued to stabilise following a record first quarter and the subsequent market turbulence caused by the recent changes to Vehicle Excise Duty. The market is now more in line with 2017 forecasts. Demand in the month was down across private, fleet and business registrations, recording falls of -7.8%, -2.4% and -8.3% respectively. Meanwhile, the AFV sector enjoyed notable growth, with demand rising 29.0% to 10,721 units to maintain a record 4.4% market share for a second month. Petrol registrations rose by 2.5% and diesel fell -14.7%. Compact cars, typically powered by smaller petrol engines, proved most
popular for all buyers, with superminis and small family cars accounting for almost 60% of the market. Small family cars and SUVs were the only two segments to register growth in June, up 6.0% and 11.3% respectively. Year-to-date, overall performance remains strong, falling slightly by -1.3% to 1,401,811 units and putting the market on track to meet 2017 forecasts. Fleet and business buyers drove demand across the first six months with registrations up 1.5% and 2.7% respectively in contrast to a -4.8% drop in private purchases, although almost 650,000 consumers have chosen a new car this year. Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said: “As forecast, demand for new cars has started to cool following five consecutive years of solid growth but the numbers are still strong and the first half of the year is the second biggest on record. Provided consumer and business confidence holds, we expect demand to remain at a similarly high level over the coming months. It’s encouraging to see alternatively fuelled vehicles experiencing rapid growth but adoption is still at a relatively low level and more long term incentives are required if this new generation of vehicles is to be a more common sight on British roads.”

Costa Blanca Cup begins
Thousands of young footballers attend opening ceremony BENIDORM’S ParcL’Aiguera was the venue of the spectacular opening ceremony of the Costa Blanca Cup earlier this week. Two hundred and fifty football teams of young boys and girls, from twenty countries, will compete in the event which culminates lasts for six days, culminating with a finals day on Saturday. The teams will play at venues in a number of Marina Baixa towns including Benidorm, Altea, La Vila Joiosa, La Nucía, Benissa, Polop and Calpe. Benidorm Mayor Toni Perez, welcomed the players to the opening ceremony of the cup, which will celebrate it’s quarter century next year. Whilst inviting them to “spend among us some unforgettable days with their families, friends and colleagues”, Pérez stressed that, “This tournament is bigger and more important each year, and even more in the next edition, when the 25th anniversary is celebrated.” Organisers, aim to foster the belief that football is the fundamental reason that brings together teams of many nationalities, races and cultures. After a parade through the streets of Benidorm, the participants joined together in the park, where they enjoyed an opening ceremony full of color and excitement, culminating in music and fireworks. Now, the teams must concentrate on the serious business of competition.
