In addition an extra reinforcement of eighty five Guardia Civil officers will relocate to the province of Alicante to work from stations in the smaller town in the area. The unit based in Benidorm, which includes mounted police officers and trainees, will reinforce the fifty strong force already working permanently in the Costa Blanca’s major holiday playground. Juan Carlos Moragues from the Valencian regional government said, "Better coordination between all security forces is vital for the prevention of crime, both small-scale theft and robbery, organised crime". This news comes on the back of a report released from the National Police in Benidorm, who revealed a reduction in crime for the first six months of the year, of 5.8%, compared to 2016. The figures covering the period from January 1 to June 25, show a drop of 17.8% in robberies from homes and premises. Local police figures for the town also show a decrease in crime during the first quarter of the year up to the end of March. Figures revealed a 23.6% reduction in robberies and a 23.3% reduction in robberies with violence and intimidation. Moragues pointed out that in the whole of the Alicante Province during the first quarter of the year, a total of 21,168 crimes were reported, which means Benidorm’s figures of 12,000 reported crimes represents only 5.7% of the province’s total, despite the extra thousands of extra visitors to the town during this period. Twenty three of the extra Guardia Civil officers will be based in coastal stations from San Juan in the South to Javea in the North, including Villajoyosa, Altea and Calpe.

Benidorm’s cultural centre by 2019? by Andy Mansell The long running saga of Benidorm’s halffinished Casa de Cultura appears to be nearing a solution. Mayor Toni Perez announced recently that work on completing the building’s façade and first phase of interior construction could begin as soon as the plans are passed by Consell Juridic Consultiu. The original plans for this ambitious project included a massive auditorium seating 1140, a smaller room seating 546, changing rooms, International library, classrooms and even an archaeological museum. Construction of the huge building, which includes a multi-storey car park started ten years ago, with an estimated completion date of 2013, but stalled, owing to the global financial crisis in 2009. Since then, the project has remained as a vast, monolithic shell, perched on the corner of Avenida Europa and Calle Ibiza. A legal disagreement between Benidorm council and the Valencian regional government over a ten million euro VAT bill due to be
paid on completion, delayed plans further. However, after a visit to the project last November by Valencian president Ximo Puig, a new agreement has been negotiated, where Benidorm only need to find around 4.5 million euros for the completed project on delivery. The re-commissioned first phase will include the smaller auditorium, a professional conservatory of music and dance, cafeteria and completion of the façade of the building. New plans for the project will go before the Consell Juridic Consultiu, next Monday allowing for work to commence within the next few months, with a completion date in early 2019.
Two more hikers rescued from the Montgo Denia firefighters were called out to a rescue operation on the Montgo on Tuesday as two Spanish hikers lost their way. The women, both in their 50s, had started out on their hike at around 8.30am in the morning with a group of five Australian friends. They soon fell behind the rest of the group and with no water to hand, were exhausted and had lost their way come 11.00am. The women were on the slope that overlooks Plaça Justa de Xabia and after calling 112, were quickly located by a sergeant, a corporal and two firefighters who provided them with water and guided them down the Montgo to the Denia firing range.

Jack had previously mentioned heading to Benidorm to his family, but they have not heard from him since Tuesday June 13. He has no money and no passport. Mediterraneo plans afoot Benidorm city technicians are studying plans submitted for the redevelopment of Avenida Mediterraneo, the two lane highway, which runs parallel to Levante beach, one block back from the seafront. Only one tender was received from companies wishing to undertake the project, expected to cost millions of euros. The plans submitted by Esteyco Consultants, will include ashphalting, pavement repairs and the creation of a new roundabout and is expected to be complete before the summer of 2018. Barcelona based, Esteyco have a long history of work on similar projects in Spain and Latin America, particularly in their home city. Projects such as the Forum of Cultures (2004), the new neighborhood Maria del Prat Vermell, access to Sants station and Square of Las Glorias and its surroundings. The same firm also designed the footbridge over the River Segre plus a bridge over the Henares passing through Guadalajara.
Calpe ups its high summer season security

The municipal police force of Calpe has employed 10 new officers to reinforce its high summer season services. The newly-employed officers will be responsible exclusively for the surveillance of the city’s beaches,
Two officers will monitor the Infanta Elena and Infanta Cristina seafront on bicycle every day from Monday to Sunday until September 15 whilst the rest of the officers will reinforce surveillance on foot both day and night. They will ensure the safety of bathers, fight street vending on the promenades
and support rescue operations. The officers will also be readily available to provide tourists with information. In a separate campaign, the municipal police force will also reinforce its service along l’Avenida Gabriel Miro, the main commercial street of the city, where an officer will be present at every 200 metres.
Traditional tale in Teulada-Moraira The Bromera Foundation was founded in 2002 and aims to promote reading, particularly in Valencian. Since its inaugaration, it has organised, promoted and sponsored a variety of campaigns. The foundation’s most recent campaign consists of a collection of 11 books – each containing a story written by a local author. The stories are all traditional tales, based on the Valencian language and passed down from grandparent to grandchild over many generations. Teulada-Moraira has been part of the campaign with a story set in the village, written by Pepa Guardiola from Javea. The story was presented in Alzira last week together with the rest of the collection as Mayor Carlos Linares confirmed that every child at school in the municipality will receive a copy of the book.
Record summer for Spanish hoteliers Spanish hoteliers are expecting a record number of foreign visitors this summer, hotel confederation Cehat said on Wednesday, in a boost for the economy. Spain registered a record 75.5 million foreign visitors in 2016 as the economy rebounded from years in or near recession and as unrest in northern Africa and the Middle East led visitors to seek out safer travel options. Cehat forecast a rise to 80 million visitors this year. Tourism accounts for around 11 per cent of Spain's economic output and is a major contributor to employment levels. Some 37 million foreign visitors are expected during the high summer season of May through to August, Cehat said, up by 2.5 million from last year. ‘Expectations are up across all areas, in prices, nightly stays and profits,’ general secretary of Cehat Ramon Estalella said during a conference by the confederation in Madrid.

Bankia acquires BMN Spain's state-owned Bankia agreed on Tuesday to acquire Banco Mare Nostrum (BMN). The acquisition with create Spain’s fourth-biggest lender amid consolidation in Europe's struggling banking sector. The new bank will hold around €223 billion euros worth of assets, Bankia said in a statement. The two nationalised banks - both formed from the merger of several failed lenders - were bailed out at the height of the financial crisis with around €24 billion of public money after major losses on property loans. Spain's Fund for Orderly Bank Restructuring (FROB) manages the restructuring and resolution processes of credit institutions and said the Bankia deal would be regarded as ‘a way to recover public funds before a future divestment process.’ The state holds around 67 per cent of Bankia and 65 per cent of the smaller BMN. After the acquisiton, the FROB is expected to hold around 66.6 per cent of the new bank. ‘It was the right timing from a macroeconomic point of view due to the strengths of the Spanish economy and also due to the pace of the current reduction of the unemployment rate,’ Bankia Chief Executive Jose Sevilla is reported to have told analysts on a conference call. The lenders agreed to a 7.8for-1 share swap deal, valuing BMN at around €825 million. Bankia shares rose four per cent on Tuesday. In a statement to The National Securities Market Commission (CNMV) , Bankia said it would issue a maximum of 205.7 million new shares to help finance the deal, which is expected to be finalised by the end of this year. After years of consolidation, the number of lenders in Spain has shrunk from 55 in 2008 to 13 after the housing market bubble burst, triggering an almost fiveyear economic slump.

Portixol thief arrested in Javea Port
Local police officers in Javea arrested a French man last Monday as he tried to steal an ancient amphora from the seabed of the Portixol. It was around 5.30pm when officers monitoring the bathing area noticed what looked like a white buoy surface quickly with something attached to it. The white buoy proved to be a lifting bag - an item of diving equipment consisting of a robust and air-tight bag with straps, which is used to lift heavy objects underwater by means of the bag's buoyancy. The Grupo Especial de Actividades Subacuaticas (GEAS) of the Guardia Civil, the unit in charge the location and recovery of objects in the aquatic environment, among other missions attended the scene, along with the municipal architect who confirmed that the amphora – a tall jar or jug with two handles and a narrow neck - was authentic and of African origin, from the III or IV century. The thief was taken to Javea Port, where he was arrested and his equipment, including bottles of nitrox, GPS devices and even his boat was confiscated. The GEAS unit are planning a dive in the Portixol to determine whether there are more archaeological remains.
A seventy-five-year old man died after getting into difficulties, whilst swimming off Benidorm’s Poniente beach early last Wednesday evening. The incident occurred on the beach, around 7.30pm close to the Old Town, near to Parque d’Elche, when other bathers alerted a duty lifeguard to the man’s predicament. The lifeguard pulled the unconscious body ashore, and immediately began resuscitation techniques, which continued after emergency services arrived on the scene. After attempting to revive the body for an hour failed, the victim was eventually pronounced dead at around 8.30pm. Police sources, have yet to release details of the victim, who was a resident of Benidorm, but unofficially revealed the man may have drowned after suffering a heart attack whilst swimming.
Resident recognised for donating blood over 60 times The Spanish Federation of Blood Donor awarded Maria Rose Ivars of TeuladaMoraira the ‘GRAN DONANTE DE ESPANA’ title earlier this week for donating blood over 60 times. Councillors Rosana Caselles and Nieves Rodriguez congratulated Maria for her ‘commitment to society, her solidarity and generosity’. Maria was very flattered and confirmed she will continue to donate blood for as long as she can. She encouraged everybody to take part in the donations the municipality organizes, calling the donation of blood ‘a small action which can save a lot of lives’.

Councillors in TeuladaMoraira listen up by Tahnee Wright The children and adolescent council of Teulada-Moraira met with the councillors of TeuladaMoraira last week as the municipality strives to be awarded Ciudad Amiga (Child Friendly City) status by UNICEF. Mayor Carlos Linares and Councillor Daniel Ibanco - amongst several other councillors - listened attentively to the council’s suggestions as it presented ideas and results from workshops held since its inauguration. Suggestions were made in regard to public spaces, how to improve the environment, culture and leisure activities, education and sports and members of the
council even suggested improvements in their own schools. The elder councillors assured the council they would follow up and assign suggestions which cannot be solved by them to the entities in charge. In an excerpt from their website, UNICEF describe: ‘with
the Child Friendly Cities Programme, we want to contribute to improving the living conditions of children and adolescents through the promotion and implementation of effective municipal policies that guarantee their integral development with a rights approach.’
Benitachell’s Blue Flag is back Mayor of Benitatxell, Josep Femenia, Beach Councillor, Manolo Segarra, Councillor of Communication, Myra van't Hoff, and Jacinta Pastor from the Social Services Department all gathered at the Cala del Moraig this week to celebrate the Blue Flag returning to its beach.
Well done, Brian! Brian Tait set off early on June 22 to tackle the Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge in the UK to raise funds for Jalon Valley A.R.C, cheered on by wife Sue. Before leaving Spain to get acclimatised in the UK, Brian had put in many, many hours of training for the 2-day Cumbria to North Yorkshire journey. Brian and Sue also hosted a very successful Charity Coffee Morning at their lovely home overlooking the valley. Together with the raffle, the Charity Coffee Morning raised a total of €245 plus €55 in sponsorship for Brian. People continued to pledge support for Brian, sponsoring him on GoFundMe.com and also at the A.R.C. shop. Jalon Valley A.R.C expresses its greatest thanks to Brian, one of its regular dogwalkers and of course Sue and all who have pledged support for Brian, raising an outstanding total of €1,500!

Spain shuts down ISIS terror cell in Mallorca by Tahnee Wright Spanish authorities have shut down a suspected ISIS terror cell in Mallorca in a series of raids across Europe. A coordinated anti-terror operation saw officials swoop in to arrest six people for allegedly raising funds and recruiting fighters for ISIS, authorities in Spain, the United Kingdom and Germany said in statements on Wednesday. According to Spanish authorities, four of the six were detained in Mallorca, while the others were taken into custody in the UK and Germany Spanish National Police posted video of the raids to their official YouTube account and said the investigation linking the group to ISIS started in 2015 when a website with several terrorist propaganda videos was discovered. During the course of the two-year probe, authorities identified a UK-based Salafist imam who was allegedly orchestrating the production of online extremist propaganda. The 44-year-old imam, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed because of ongoing proceedings, was detained on terrorist offenses at an address in Sparkhill, Birmingham, by the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit at the request of Spanish authorities. According to Spanish police, the man is believed to be the group's spiritual leader and is known to have traveled to Mallorca on multiple occasions to set up the group that included the four who were arrested in Spain on Wednesday. They added that the imam's public speeches had already put him on the radar of British and European security services. The man taken into custody in Germany is also believed to have been working with the group and had taken part in several of their propaganda videos, according to the Spanish National Police. Authorities took action across Europe on Wednesday after the investigation appeared to indicate that the group's fol-
lowing was growing as a result of increased social media activity and secret weekly meetings where they disseminated their extremist ideology.
No jump!
Spain says its police have been involved in the arrests of 178 suspected jihadis since the country raised its security alert to one step below the maximum in June 2015.
A teenager in Spain died in Cantabria, northern Spain after thinking she heard her bungee instructor say ‘now jump’, when he was meaning to say ‘no jump’. An instructor for bungee company Flowtrack has now appeared in court in after the horrific death of Dutch teen Vera Mol, who plunged to her death off the Cabezon de la Sal bridge aged 17 in 2015. The court was told the instructor's English language skills were ‘poor’ and Vera died due to a misunderstanding - his poor pronunciation in telling Vera not to jump was understood by her as ‘now jump’, before she took the fatal plunge. Flowtrack's director will now be prosecuted for homicide through negligence, despite appealing a court ruling last year where it was argued Vera jumped before she was told to. ‘The use of the poor English 'No jump' could perfectly well be understood as an explicit order to jump by the victim,’ the judgement said. Vera hadn't been attached to a safety line and was underage, it has been ruled, with the judge saying the instructor should have checked for ID to make sure she was at least 18 years old. Bungee jumping was also prohibited from the bridge in question under Spanish regulations.

Six charged in connection with Hillsborough stadium tragedy. by Tahnee Wright British prosecutors charged six people, including four former senior police officials, on Wednesday in connection with the deaths of 96 fans at the Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield, England, in 1989. The victims, all Liverpool supporters, died in an overcrowded, fenced-in enclosure at the stadium during an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. Police at first blamed the tragedy on drunken fans, an explanation that was always rejected by the friends and families of the victims and the wider Liverpool community who spent decades campaigning for ‘justice for the 96’. In April 2016, a two-year inquest found that the fans had been ‘unlawfully killed’, citing errors or omissions by the police in planning and executing security for the match on April 15, 1989. In particular, the inquest faulted the actions of commanding officers and left to prosecutors the decision whether to file criminal charges and on Wednesday, the Crown Prosecution Service announced that it would. Spanish coastguards rescue 200 migrants
More than 200 migrants were rescued by Spanish coastguards last Saturday as they attempted crossing the Mediterranean from north Africa to Spain. Most of the migrants were from sub-Saharan Africa and the Maghreb and were rescued from five vessels in the Strait of Gibraltar and the Alboran Sea, which separates Spain from Morocco. A spokesman told the Spanish press dozens were rescued south of Gibraltar from three boats. According to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), 3,314 people have reached Spain by sea between January 1 and April 30 this year. Last Thursday, more than 400 migrants were reported rescued by the Spanish sea rescue service. At least 2,018 people have died or disappeared in the Mediterranean since the beginning of the year, according to IOM’s latest report.

"I have decided that there is sufficient evidence to charge six individuals with criminal offences," said Sue Hemming, head of the special crime and counterterrorism division at the Crown Prosecution Service, in a statement. Relatives of the victims, who were told of the decision in private shortly before it was made public, embraced outside the building where they were briefed in Warrington, northern England.
British police believe 80 people died or are missing presumed dead after the Grenfell Tower blaze two weeks ago, but it will be many months before the full death toll is known, the officer leading the investigation said in a statement on Wednesday. Fiona McCormack also said police believed no one survived in 23 of the London social housing block's 129 apartments. Police have identified and spoken to at least one person from each of the other flats. She said 60 companies were helping police with their investigation. The previously given death toll had been 79.

Judge in Spain Shark sightings orders exhumation of terrify tourists Salvador Dali’s body in Mallorca
Tourists were seen fleeing a busy Mallorca beach last weekend after a shark swam to the water's edge and thrashed around in the shallows. The incident - which took place last Sunday at Platja de Palma - was caught on video and shared thousands of times on social media. It was one of several shark sightings on Mallorcan beaches over the weekend. Three unidentified species of shark were spotted at another nearby beach last Sunday, with bathers called out of the water by lifeguards - no injuries were reported. More than 40 species of shark are thought to inhabit the Mediterranean and while attacks on humans are extremely rare, they do occur. Last month a blue shark was believed to have attacked a bather in Ibiza, leaving her wounded.
by Tahnee Wright A 60-year-old Spanish woman has won a court case resulting in a judicial order to have the body of surrealist painter Salvador Dali exhumed. Maria Pilar Abel Martinez claims there is a possibility Dali was her father and the body will therefore be subject to a DNA extraction. Dali died of heart failure in 1989 aged 85 and was previously thought to be childless - even largely celibate – however Ms Martinez, a tarot card reader, has been claiming since 2007 that her mother told her at an early age of a short-lived, secret affair with the artist in the mid-1950s. Ms Martinez says her grandmother knew of the affair and would often tell her that she was ‘strange, like your father.’ Dali’s work was worth hundreds of millions of euros collectively and he bequeathed it all to the Spanish state upon his death. Ms Martinez, a divorced mother of four, has said her main goal is to establish whether or not Dali was her father, but after bringing a lawsuit in 2015, she told the New York Times that she was also seeking ‘whatever corresponds to me.’ Ms Martinez has worked as a tarot card reader for decades, sometimes appearing on television, but she also told the Times that she did not read her own cards and that exhumation of Dali’s body was necessary to confirm her
lineage once and for all. Dali is buried under the theatre in his Catalonian home town of Figueres, which was converted into a museum for his work and is one of the region's biggest tourist attractions. In life, Dali was known to be highly eccentric, as was his wife, Gala. For much of their married life they lived separately, with Gala residing in a medieval castle in a small village and Dali allowed to visit only upon her written invitation.
Madrid prepares for WorldPride

Madrid City Council raised a giant rainbow flag on Monday to show support for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community, as WorldPride 2017 takes place in the capital from June 23 to July 2. The flag, made with more than 100,000 ribbons tied by citizens, is 12 metres long and will hang over the facade of the city hall during the festival. Its colours represent life (red), healing (orange), sunlight (yellow), nature (green), harmony/ peace (blue) and spirit (purple). The WorldPride festival is held every few years in a different international city and is expected to draw up to three million people to the streets of Chueca, a world-famous gay neighborhood in central Madrid.
A fire in the castle in 1984, two years after Gala's death, almost killed Dali. An assistant of his, Robert Descharnes, pulled him out of the burning building. Dali was hospitalised and fed by nasal tubes. In 2007, Ms Martinez contacted Descharnes, who still was in possession of some of the nasal tubes. He agreed to submit them for a DNA test, but the results were inconclusive. The date for the exhumation has not yet been set.

Egg-throwing record cracked A New Zealand duo have cracked the record for the longest throw and catch of an egg. Nick Hornstein and Robbie Hollander's 81-metre effort was the highlight of the annual World EggThrowing Championships, held in the English village of Swaton. Sunday's event also saw a victory for Canada, with Julie Moen winning the Egg Russian Roulette challenge. The messy challenge sees two players, sitting opposite each other, taking it in turn to pick from six eggs, five boiled and one raw, and smashing them on their heads. Whoever avoids the raw egg is declared winner.
Boy travels from Morocco to Spain underneath a bus A boy travelled at least 230 kilometers from Morocco to Spain hanging underneath a bus, officials said on Monday, in another example of desperate measures taken by migrants to get to Europe. Emergency services in Seville tweeted a video of the boy being led away from a bus they said came from Tangier, some 230 kilometers away, wearing a dirtied white t-shirt. They said he had been taken to hospital but was in good condition. A police spokesman told global news agency AFP that the boy appeared to be Moroccan, but said he had been told the bus came from Tetouan, another Moroccan city even further away than Tangier. “The bus arrived in Seville and as the driver went to let the passengers out, he noted something strange,” the spokesman said. “He called the police and firefighters and they found the boy who was holding onto the bottom of the bus,” he added.

U3A Marina Baixa arts and crafts by Andy Mansell U3A Last Monday, the U3A Marina Baixa held their Monthly General Meeting at the Casa de Cultura, Alfaz del Pi. There were 145 Members in attendance, including six new members and one guest. However following this month’s meeting, there was no speaker, instead a display by the Members Craft Group, which included many handmade Birthday and Special Event cards was exhibited and also available to purchase. There was also a selection of the watercolour groups work, which was superb.
The Members then reconvened to enjoy a lovely meal at the Hogar del Pensionista Restaurant in Alfaz del Pi. U3A Marina Baixa holds its general meetings on the fourth Monday of each month in the auditorium at the Casa de Cultura, Alfaz del Pi. Two hundred enjoy Summer Dinner Dance 234 partygoers enjoyed Teulada-Moraira U3A’s annual Summer Dinner Dance, held in the Imperial Salon at Salon Canor in Teulada last Friday. Guests were treated to a sun-blessed reception with cava and music from Ian Henry in the gardens before taking their seats inside for a multi-course dinner. After dinner, Gill and Ian Henry formed ‘Double Impact’ keeping partygoers dancing until late into the evening. Labour International visit Charity golf day relocated ‘Casa Pinet’ this Sunday by Tahnee Wright
Sr. Jeroni Moncho’s new ‘Casa Pinet’ restaurant in Alcalali played host to members of Labour International’s Costa Blanca branch as they enjoyed their monthly lunch on June 22. Having relocated from its long-term site in the mountain village of Tarbena to its new home in the Jalon Valley, members were amazed to find the owner of Casa Pinet had transferred the totality of his treasure trove of communist, republican and Valencian memorabilia which so characterised the Tarbena premises, attracting visitors from far and wide. Pictures, banners, posters of bygone party heroes and socialist causes bedecked the walls and roof beams. The owner had even transferred the original fireplace and chimney breast along with an antique stone wash basin. The new premises, renamed in Valenciano as ‘Ca Pinet’ boasts a much larger floor area, is lighter, better ventilated and has a small parking area. Members enjoyed Ca Pinet’s signature Valencian paella. Labour International Branch Secretary, Lesley White said: ‘It was a great atmosphere, we felt most welcome and the food was good too. Our May Day celebration lunch will return to Ca Pinet in 2018.’

Specsavers Opticas collaborate in campaign to help the deaf-blind by Staff Reporter As the International Day of Deafblindness was celebrated on Tuesday, Marcelo Rosado, ONCE representative for Andalucia, Ceuta and Melilla and Jose Angel Moral-Tajadura, Retail and Business Development Manager for Specsavers Spain held a press conference to announce a new fundraising campaign, which will launch at Specsavers Opticas stores across Spain next Monday.
Specsavers Opticas will be supporting the ONCE Foundation for the Deaf-Blind (La Fundacion ONCE para la Atencion de Personas con Sordoceguera - FOAPS) over the next six months - offering free comprehensive eye tests at all eight of their opticians and asking patients to donate €1 to FOAPS after their test until the end of the year. Their aim is to raise €6,000 to fund 400 hours of interpreting for the deaf-blind. All funds raised will be donated to FOAPS to fund interpreters who are crucial to allow deaf-blind people to lead a full life and communicate. This is part of FOAPS’ 10-year anniversary campaign to raise awareness of the issues that deaf blind people face and boost funding so they can help more of these vulnerable people who, without their help, would be totally isolated. Specsavers’ Retail and Business Development Manager Jose Angel Moral-Tajadura commented: ‘One of our key objectives in Spain has been to collaborate with an organisation such as ONCE, which is so important in helping people with sight loss. I hope that this collaboration
won’t just last for 6 months and that we will collaborate with ONCE and their foundations over the long term.’ He added that his commitment was to beat their €6,000 target and that he would be working closely with all the stores so that in January he can return to ONCE and celebrate the end of a highly successful campaign. ‘Our eye tests are comprehensive and centred around professionalism and clinical care. We offer eye tests of the back of the eye and take digital retinal photography, as well as other tests which can detect signs related to glaucoma, age related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and other issues. These issues, if not caught early and referred to an ophthalmologist, can cause partial or total sight loss, problems which ONCE understand very well’, he explained. ONCE representative Marcelo Rosado explained the very important work that the FOAPS interpreters undertake. He added that there are 100 interpreters working in Spain, offering a very personalised service depending on the level of visual and hearing loss and the different personal situations of each individual. Rosado said that FOAPS is currently offering interpreter services to 377 people; 260 adults and 117 children – more than 46,000 hours in 2017. ‘As we add more activities there are more needs and so initiatives such as this one from Specsavers Opticas are very important.’ Those who wish to participate in the campaign should visit their nearest Specsavers Opticas store for a comprehensive eye test and donate just €1 between July and December 2017. Many medals for Marcia's Dance Centre and Stage School students
by Tahnee Wright Last Sunday, students, parents and friends of Marcia’s Dance Centre and Stage School in Calpe gathered together at the Diamante Beach Hotel, to watch the Medal Presentation and enjoy a performance of recent routines in ballet, tap and hip hop. Councillor Carol Saunders presented the medals and awards, all of which were gained in SIPBE (La Sociedad Independiente de Profesores de Baile en Europa). All students performed extremely well, many of them gaining Honours and Anna Browning gaining a remarkable 100 per cent score in her Grade 3 Tap exam. ‘This is a first time a student has achieved a perfect score, we have had 98 and 99 but never 100% so congratulations to Anna’ said Marcia. The final presentations of the afternoon were the awards
for the highest marks in the various categories. These trophies will be kept by the winners until the next examinations when they are passed onto the next winners. Teulada-Moraira U3A band help raise a roaring €1,640 Moraira seafront played host to the first concert in the series of free summer shows produced by the Teulada-Moraira Lions Club last Sunday as the U3A band interpreted musical favourites from across the decades. The evening was enjoyed tremendously by all who participated, the U3A band and the crew working tirelessly to entertain the crowds. Lion President Brian Clarke thanked the U3A band, the Ayuntamiento and of course the audience for their outstanding generosity as donations totalled just over €1,640 in support for local causes. A sunny afternoon of song Local songsters Valley Voices shared a sunny afternoon with an audience at the Citrus Bar in Orba last Friday. A collection of easy listening songs was sung in the shaded garden as temperature reached the high 30s. Cake and cava was served on arrival and the Valley Voice express their greatest thanks to Jackie and her Mum, Mary whom together baked the sweet spread. The songsters also send their thanks to – the waiting staff at the Citrus Bar and Garcia Villas for their sponsorship which has enabled the purchase of a new keyboard. by Andy Mansell A Sunday Funday at Jokers Benidorm last week , swelled the Busy Bees Benidorm charity’s fundraising total to over 100,000 euros raised in the last year. The charity afternoon, which included a raffle with top prizes, tombola, cake stalls and all sorts of fun and games including a sack race and high heels race, also featured performances by a host of Benidorm’s star entertainers. Gary Burr from the Giving4giving charity donated 1000 euros worth of raffle prizes for the event and subsequently turned up to surprise Busy Bees founder, Wayne Bellamy Wright with a cheque for a further 1000 euros.
Giving4Giving has donated over five thousand euros to worthwhile causes during the last month via fundraising auctions and a total of more than eighty thousand since Gary started the charity. A delighted Wayne, thanked Gary for all the help and support he gives towards Busy Bees. Two other Benidorm bars also made significant donations collected from their customers and clients. Both Ben and Alistair from Kaffee Klee and Carol from the Wooky Hollow raised €500 each. Busy Bees co-founder, Des Bellamy-Wright, announcing the grand total raised, paid tribute to everyone involved in the successful inaugural event including the performers and volunteers, said “We are grateful to all the people that donat-
ed prizes for our raffle, tombola, cake stalls and games but a big thank you goes to each and every one of you who turned out to offer your support on the day” said Des. “Whether it be to help out, take part in the games or put your hand in your pockets to help us raise an amazing amount on the day of €7,506 bringing the total in the run up to the charity over the last month to over €25,000 and the grand total raised over the last year to date to a whopping €104,085.54 which is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. Des, who along with husband, Wayne, set up their Busy Bees charity to help raise funds for the underprivileged children and abused women at the bankrupt Emaus homes, added “This now leaves us in a great position when the new administration take over the homes next week, so well done everyone.”

With in excess of 100 members present, Oliva U3A held its annual showcase event at the at the Centre Polivalent d’Oliva recently. The event highlighted the organisation’s offering, with demonstrations from its various groups. Amongst the groups to present were the Choir, the music group, the line dancers, the poetry group and the creative writers. An award ceremony was held for members of the petanque and golf groups and the sequence dancers performed an outstanding routine. Mike Goy, President of Oliva U3A also presented a cheque for €500 to the President of the organisation’s chosen charity - the AECC Oliva. The University of the Third Age is an international organisation whose aims are the education and stimulation of mainly retired members of the community—those in their third 'age' of life. It is commonly referred to as ‘U3A’. With in excess of 500 members, the Oliva U3A boasts approximately 35 groups, from Golf to History of Art to Line-dancing. The freedom of the press mantra is fake news as news media is rigidly controlled. Things actually got worse since former New York Tribune editor John Swinton, addressing a Press Association convention in 1893, said; “There is no such thing as an independent Press. If you express an honest opinion, you know beforehand it would never appear in print.” NATO conflicts turned out to be disasters. U.S inspired conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria alone put 20.9 million refugees on the road to nowhere. Libya and media hyped and laundered UK Foreign Secretary William Hague
and his military henchmen. If we had a genuinely free media these hapless goons would be vigorously questioned by non-partisan presenters and audiences that have not been vetted beforehand. Can you recall genuine debate in which those opposed to non-European or refugee displacement was allowed to mirror the host people’s disenchantment? I can’t either. Did a single media disclose that a recent pro-refugee demo in Madrid was NGO and cash sponsored? We are all negatively affected by the European Union’s anti-Russian trade sanctions. Embargoes rebounded catastrophically. I do not recall a member of the hapless political elite being robustly questioned on this hot topic. The splintering near bankrupt European Union, headed by two unelected Presidents and a coven of commissioners, is no more democratic
that the USSR. No debate in media. There are honest journalists but an open mind and mouth often ends in death or exile. Former editor of Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung: “I’ve been a journalist for about 25 years, and I’ve been educated to lie, to betray, and not to tell the truth to the public.” Soon afterwards, in full health, 56year old Dr Udo Ulfkotte died. So did former CIA Director William Colby after saying, “The CIA owns everyone of any significance in the major media.” Australian investigative journalist John Pilger: “We have got to stop using the term mainstream (media). It is actually an extreme. What could be more extreme than institutions that popularise rapacious wars and deceive about economic policy?” Fernando Casado, Spanish analyst and legal expert: “Some journalists are quite open-minded and aware of the real situation, but
have no choice but to write what is expected of them by their editors in order to make both ends meet and have a decent salary.” Corporate media is as out of touch with popular sentiment as are politicians. Try to make the connection. Then, let us fantasise that one day we might enjoy a genuinely free press in which debate is actually encouraged rather than manipulated at best and marginalised at worst.

It’s that time of year when we swap our morning walks for an hour of strenuous activity in the pool, although not until the water temperature reaches 25C. I’m a bit of a wuss like that. These are our preferred means of daily exercise which we find much more enjoyable than regular visits to the gym. Our local gymnasium is a relatively short walk away, but it became something of a chore. The crunch came after the proprietor refused our request to suspend the Princess’s membership until she had recovered from extensive foot surgery. His reaction was, “Why? She still has the use of her upper body”. Up yours Tonto, I more or less told him, and we haven’t been back since. The first morning at the pool saw me execute my customary leap into the deep end. But a strange thing happened. Like those clips in movies where a character is moving at lightning speed, but the special effects lads have slowed other people and traffic down to a crawl. Well that was me in reverse. I had reached optimum height and with my arms clasped tightly around my knees, was poised in mid-air, when I had an alarming thought. Had I removed my hearing-aids? Yes I know it’s surprising to learn that one so young needs these devices, but there you are. Too many rock concerts in the seventies. Hearing aid technology and water do not mix and instead of my past life flashing before me, all I was hearing was “nineteen hundred euros; nineteen hundred euros” repeating itself. Then, still hovering, I questioned whether or not I had taken the requisite poolside shower just seconds before, but it was like those occasions when you lock the front door after leaving home. The wife asks in the car, “Did you lock up?” You know that you did, but feel compelled to go back and make sure. I knew that I had showered. Hadn’t I? Because if not and our pool superintendant had spotted it, then I was toast. Our superintendant makes Genghis Khan look like Sooty and is the main reason why our community pool is one of the best in the area, and not showering prior to swimming is a castratable offence. But happy to relate, the aforementioned aids were at home, and it was confirmed by the Princess that we had indeed showered together. Now how could I have forgotten something like that?

“Phew! It ain’t ‘arf hot”, is a well-used expression by holiday makers as they arrived on the Costa’s, during July and August. “I really don’t know how the locals put up with it” you can hear people say, “the intensity of the sun, and particularly the long hot nights, make it difficult to sleep”. At the same time as many Spanish towns and cities, like Sevilla who recorded a temperature of more than 50c, there are many other places apart from the Mediterranean and around the world are undergoing intense heat, even Britain has hit 34c the hottest it’s been in more than 40 years, while across the globe in countries like Brazil and Chile downpours have brought floods with landslides in China, has the world’s weather gone mad? Whenever the word environment or global warming is mentioned, peoples eyes glaze over, “Oh yes, they say, global warming what rubbish, soon we will all burn to a cinder ha,ha, it’s an age old bit of nonsense ” they say. Well folks I hope I don't bore you to tears, but I have some very important news for you, so if you are a sensible person with families maybe grandchildren growing up I ask you to read on. Apart from being a journalist, I’m also a professor of natural sciences and environmental issues, also a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society I have travelled as Far East to China and as far West to the Hawaiian Islands, up to the Arctic Circle and as far South as the Antarctic, this during a period of twenty three years, so I think I am reasonably qualified to write about the scale of damage to our world. A few weeks ago Donald trump marched out on the Paris climate agreement meeting before he could sign, only he and two other countries failed to sign after it had already been ratified by 195 countries who recognise the overwhelming evidence to reduce harmful gases that is poisoning the atmosphere. During Trumps election campaign he promised out of work Americans more jobs, so since his election victory he has employed more coal miners and more people to work in the power industry, now America can say that they have more employed people then they have had for many years. Thousands of scientists from all over the world for years have been trying to understand what more we have to do to combat the serious downturn of the planets environment. Some scientists have even suggested that in not to many years to come most humans will have

to wear space type clothes so that they can cope with the intense heat and rays from the sun, and the obnoxious gases being released by the power stations around the world. Certain countries the Far East such as Vietnam most people wear large straw hats and long sleeved shirts and long skirts when they go out into the street, this is their simple way for them to protect themselves, many Chinese wear masks as the air pollution in Most cities is desperately bad for the health. I have witnessed huge icebergs split apart in the Arctic circle crumble into the sea, recently a village in Greenland was devastated when a tsunami caused by a falling splintered iceberg had swept their village away killing many inhabitants, the same happens in the Antarctic as huge pieces of ice crash down and become enveloped by the warming sea this is known as calving, with then huge ice flows threatening all that lays before it. I have walked on the millions of years old Briksdal glacier in Norway and watched as large parts of the glacier is melting into the sea, the glacier had been greatly reduced in size by the warmer climate. Islands as far away in the Indian Ocean have been effected by rising tides such as the Maldives, the Seychelles and the Solomon Islands in the Pacific the highest point on some of these Island is only a few feet above the water line, the Maldives Islands West of India is
only 1.3 metres above sea level, a rise of three feet would submerge all of the 1100 Islands, with about 325 thousand inhabitants. The Seychelles has a population of around 87.122 thousand inhabitants, all of these could be affected during a big surge, as with hundreds of other low lying Islands and main lands could be swamped by rising sea levels. In the last twenty years a large hole appeared in the ozone layer above the Artic allowing the intense heat from the Sun to disturb our weather patterns, now there is evidence that the hole is closing, without any real explanation, this has happened before however it reopened again. I’ve spent a long time in Central and East Africa such as Kenya, Somalia, Sudan and Tanzania, in some of these places rain fall has been almost non-existent, crops have died and many people are undergoing starvation as famine ravages their families, I once acted as an Escort to take 25 lorries with 600 tonnes of grain with the World Food Programme of the United Nations from Kampala to Ayod in the Sudan, and wrote a book called the Wages of Fear I survived a life threatening journey through barren wastes and the ongoing war in Southern Sudan. The world’s wildlife has also suffered greatly at our hands over the last 40 or 50 decades, many animals hunted to extinction, such as elephants and rhinos now whales are being washed up after they choke to death on plastic bags dumped by lazy or stupid people the same fate goes for dolphins and other large sea life. Certainly our throw away style and the amount of cars on the roads, has gone a long way to disturbing the changing pattern of the weather and it that has become the most unpredictable part of our lives. As far as I’m concerned the sun has become infinitely hotter, with temperatures around the Mediterranean that have been blistering hot, down pours in countries that have hacked their forest to pieces. I will almost certainly not be around when the time comes when people will greet each other on the streets dressed like astronauts, or have to cower in the shade, so in the meantime I’m off to my terrace with a large gin and tonic and a huge amount of ice, sit under a parasol and think about all my scientific colleagues around the world who are striving to come up with a solution to make the earth more bearable in the summer. Clients need to be aware of two important factors that can affect you when converting your euros into Sterling and moving those funds out of Spain.
2. Exchange rate and repatriation The agreed sale price of a property is often based on the amount of Sterling that the seller hopes to receive, according to the exchange rate at that time. However, a Notary / completion date can take place some weeks, or even months, after the contract of sale has been signed. This means that sellers could run the risk of the exchange rate moving against them, and thus reducing the amount of Sterling that they receive. For example, with an exchange rate of 1.20, a sale value of 150,000€ will give you £125,000. Should this exchange rate rise to 1.23, a rise of just 3 cents, this would give a return of £121,951, which would mean achieving £3,049 less Sterling. A fire or accident can happen at any time by

In my last article I mentioned that I would be staying up most of the night to see the results of the General Election coming in. However, at 23.00 our time, much to the shock of many people (once again) a hung parliament was forecasted, which would have been the worst news Theresa May could have wished for. That is exactly what happened. Since then, the most appalling fire in London with so much anger surrounding it, has happened. Which is not surprising, as it would appear that playing conkers is unsafe, whilst good fire prevention on tower blocks was off the radar. This was shortly followed by an attack on the Muslims coming out of their mosque. Yet again, a white van trying to kill as many people as possible. It was a white extremist, a normal family man from Cardiff, seeking revenge. I am very fearful for the UK as there are thousands of potentially dangerous Jihads and extremists and no matter how many police and how much security is in place, it is impossible to monitor them all. Then of course, we have got the Brexit talks started. Not really the climate for a government, which is seriously weakened, to start negotiations on the UK’s future. I just cannot understand why over 50% of the UK believe they are going to be better off, more independent and great again. As far as the rest of the world is concerned, the British were in pretty good place already. One great concern for me is that the City of London creates great wealth, paying an
enormous amount of taxes – both business and personal and this is also now threatened. Whilst coming out of the European market where nearly 50% of their exporting was to the EU –now what? I, like many living in Spain, are looking forward to the Ex-Pat situation being settled in both countries and when hopefully we will be able to sigh with relief and get on with our lives. Many of us think there is a great possibility that a greater proportion of people will want to leave the UK and come and live in Spain. To avoid the consequences of Brexit, the increasing terrorist threat and to get away from the very frightening press, who seem to take no responsibility for anything that they say nowadays. Hello, my name is Bruce Johnson and I have just bought a property in Spain. Could you please tell me if I need to make a Spanish Will. Dear Bruce, Thank you for your question. It is advisable to make a Spanish Will for several reasons: 1. If you have a Spanish Will, this could save significant time and money for the inheritors, for example the inheritor does not need to wait for the inheritance paperwork from your home country. If you don’t have a Spanish Will the inheritor will have to wait until the official document from your country is received (documentation that will need to be duly legalized or with an apostille and it must be translated by a national public translator). As all these processes can take a long time, you may incur penalties in Spain, considering that the deadline to proceed with the inheritance taxes is within six months from the date of death. 2. If you are tax resident in Spain and intestate the inheritance will be applied by Spanish law. So if you do not want the Spanish law applied then you should make a Spanish will, where you will be free to appoint as inheritor the persons or organizations that you choose (according with your country law). On the other hand, in Spain the inheritance TAXES are very high for non residents, although the Law 26/2014 recognizes that citizens residing in the European Economic Area can benefit like the Spanish from regional Inheritance and Gift Tax law. Therefore, if you have paid inheritance taxes in the last few years, it is important for you to review the inheritance paid as you could claim any difference that may remain. A gentleman walked into my office this week. He had invested £100,000 back in the 1980s which had remained untouched and had grown substantially to over £400,000. The client was now in a position where he wanted to make a large withdrawal along with rebalancing his portfolio to a more cautious attitude to risk. He was aware that any changes to his portfolio would create large capital gains tax bills in both Spain and the UK. This client had set up a portfolio of investment funds when he was a UK resident, but had now been resident in
Spain for 4 years. I was really happy to let him know that we could move all his existing funds into a tax efficient investment wrapper designed for Spanish residents. As long as he remained Spanish resident for at least one more year, all the capital gains tax that he’d accumulated whilst a UK resident would disappear, saving him £10,000s in taxes. “I’m going to” and negatives Basic Spanish for everyday needs by

Let’s start this week with some sentences which revise what we learnt in the previous article. They can all build together very simply, by combining “I” words (quiero – I want, necesito – I need, puedo – I can) with verbs in their basic, or infinitive, form, that is the form that ends in “–ar”,”-er” or “–ir”. QUIERO TRABAJAR I want to work. NECESITO COCINAR I need to cook. PUEDO BAILAR I can dance. NECESITO COMER TRES VECES AL DÍA I need to eat three times a day. QUIERO JUGAR OTRA VEZ I want to play again. PUEDO ABRIR LA PUERTA I can open the door. Now we are going to introduce another “I” expression, which works in exactly the same way as the ones we have already seen. This time it consists of two words - VOY A and it means “I’m going to”. “I am going to” is rather a long expression in English, but it cannot be translated word for word into Spanish. We need to think about the concept it expresses, which is related to my “intention” to do something. When we want to express our intention in Spanish these are the two words we should use VOY A, and we then follow them with any infinitive verb in just the same way as before. For example: VOY A COCINAR (I’m going to cook) VOY A ABRIR (I’m going to open) One of the most important keys to learning Spanish is to realize that we cannot translate word for word. This is the big mistake that many people make. In actual fact, most of our confusion about Spanish comes from our insistence on trying to translate literally all the time when it is the idea behind the
words which is the important thing. Something else you may have noticed is that the Spanish use fewer words than English to express the same ideas, which is amazing in itself when you think how much they like speaking. Here are some more sentences for you to translate into English. This time I will put the answers at the end of the article. QUIERO BAILAR CONTIGO PUEDO TRABAJAR MAÑANA VOY A COMER AHORA NECESITO APRENDER ESPAÑOL Now we’re going to look at something new, which we can do without needing to learn any new words at all. This is absolutely true and just shows how easy basic Spanish really is. Here it is – if you put the word NO in front of any of your new sentences you instantly make them negative. This may not sound like a big deal, but it is remarkably simple and much easier than English. For example:. VOY A COCINAR I’m going to cook NO VOY A COCINAR I’m not going to cook NECESITO CAMBIAR DINERO I need to change money NO NECESITO CAMBIAR DINERO I don’t need to change money QUIERO VOLVER A INGLATERRA I want to go back to England NO QUIERO VOLVER A INGLATERRA I don’t want to go back to England PUEDO DORMIR AQUÍ I can sleep here NO PUEDO DORMIR AQUÍ I can’t sleep here Please take a second to look at the way these
negative forms are made in English. “I’m not going to”, “I don’t need to” “I can’t”. Imagine being a foreigner trying to learn English, you have to learn lots of different ways of making negatives, whereas in Spanish you only ever have to put NO in front of the verb – and Bob’s your uncle, you’ve made your sentence negative. You see – I told you it was easy! Now here are the answers to the sentences above: QUIERO BAILAR CONTIGO: “I want to dance with you” (You never know when this phrase might come in handy) PUEDO TRABAJAR MAÑANA. “I can work tomorrow” (Anathema to some people, but a few of us still have to do it!) VOY A COMER AHORA. “I am going to eat now” (We could also translate this “I’m going to have lunch now” as the Spanish also use “COMER” to refer to having their big midday meal.) NECESITO APRENDER ESPAÑOL. “I need to learn Spanish” (You can’t argue with that really, and it could be useful when you want to encourage a Spanish person to actually speak to you in Spanish rather than English which tends to happen round here more and more). Now here are some sentences to think about for next week. This time you’re going to translate four short sentences from English into Spanish. The basic structures are exactly as we’ve learnt them so far – there are no tricks, and the answers will appear next week! I don’t want to speak English. I’m not going to open the door. I can’t cook very well. I need to work a little.

The Lodger by C.L.Taylor My world becomes dark and loud as I'm tossed, turned and twisted. Over and over I turn, my breath burning in my lungs, the river roaring in my ears. Having read a couple of books by Cally which I have reviewed recently, I must admit that I've got a soft spot for dysfunctional people and families with unstable and unhappy relationships. It mirrors the lives of many of us. Some of us don't seem to get it right with the happy ever after bit. When 25 year old Joe is introduced you get the feeling that he is infatuated with Laura, the protagonist. Joe is Ian's brother, labelled the lady-killer, vivacious, outspoken and the look before you leap type, whatever that means! So, is he presented as a good guy or a bad one? Find out. Whilst at work, Laura receives an email from Ian, an old flame from her university days asking if she can put up Joe for a couple of nights because he has just been kicked out of his flat. The "chemistry wasn't there" between Ian and Laura but the pair have remained on close terms. Laura has two spare rooms but seems reluctant to put him up after recent traumatic events which focus the story on the tragic death of Steven, her fiance. "The river snatched him from me and
there was nothing I could do but watch as the current carried him away." Be warned: never take things at face value with Cally. When she develops her characters we may see polar opposites: good and evil as she slowly reveals the darker side of the villains. Significantly, the story begins on the anniversary of Steven's death. A group of them: Ian, his wife, Sarah, brother Joe, Laura and fiance were holidaying in Wales, ready to have a picnic by the river when he drowned. Steven couldn't swim, although the others still encouraged him to get into the water. Then the tragedy happened. They met in Steven's favourite pub to remember him. Laura had been suffering flashbacks of the event which seemed to have paralysed her. Ian tried to console her by telling her that they were all responsible for his death. Too many memories "locked within its walls" and before long Laura made the painful decision to sell the house. We soon become aware of Laura's paranoia that she is being watched: "I don't feel right and I can't shake the feeling that something, or

someone is in my house" Returning from work one day, she opens the door and calls out, convinced that someone is inside. When she sees half a dozen cds scattered on the floor she is reminded of one of Steven's habits and panics. When she is more rational, she realises that she has been burgled so she makes the decision to let Joe stay with her to make her feel safe. In her paranoia she sees Joe wearing Steven's dressing gown and this freaks her out. In her distress, her body ragdoll limp, threw her off balance, knowing that she had given away all of Steven's clothing to a charity shop months ago. "I can't play act being a couple, no matter how innocent, when the ghost of Steven haunts every room of this house." A mysterious character has been documenting his life with Laura in a diary and it proves to be difficult to stomach. This one is in italics and it is typical of Cally to use this technique in her books. Forget the drowning for a moment. When Laura watches a romantic film: The Notebook after knocking back two bottles of wine before bursting into tears the truth starts to

come out bit by bit. "It portrayed the one thing I'd always wanted-love. Pure, untainted love that lasts a lifetime." She thought she had found the “man of {her} dreams.” Don’t jump to conclusions. Anger emerged which had been “simmering” inside her for the past year. She then acted out of character by throwing the glass at the wall, followed by a bottle, then the remote. “Lost in a red mist of rage I whirled through the living room destroying everything and anything that wasn’t nailed down.” Laura seems to be on a downward spiral, a path of self-destruction but finding a diary helps to put things into perspective and leads to an alarming conclusion. ‘No usual gig’ from Javea’s favourite Happy Freuds Botanico in Javea will play host to emerging bands of the Marina Alta competition winners Happy Freuds next week as they perform an exclusive ‘Teo Time’ gig, with Teo Holmstrom, lead guitarist and lead vocalist celebrating turning 18. Happy Freuds went head to head against three other local bands at the emerging bands final on the Plaza Portal del Clot back in April, wowing both the audience and the judges alike and going on to perform at the MontgoRock Festival in May alongside icons such as Leiva, MClan and La Fuga. The Javea-based multi-national band have promised ‘no usual gig’ at Botanico on Wednesday July 5, with

Medieval La Nucia
La Nucia’s popular Medieval Market returns to the town in early July, taking the town back to it’s ancient roots for a weekend. The market, which takes place from Friday July 7 to Sunday July 9 will feature around 60 craftsmen and women who have booked stalls through organisers Amata. Theatre groups, dancers and acrobats, as well as several craft demonstrations will liven up the event for visitors. The Town hall square will be full of interesting craft stands selling ceramics, leather bags, belts and shoes, glass, designer jewelry, carved and turned wood, carved stone, soap and perfume, patchwork plus much more. Whilst the food section there will feature street food stands selling sausages, cheese, roast almonds and peanuts, bread straight from the wood oven, as well as a medieval tavern, who will roast a whole pig on a spit and a tent with Arab food. To complete the medieval setting, troubadours, story tellers, falconers, people on stilts, buffoons and other typical characters of the era wander from time to time through the streets. Visitors may even encounter gaggle of geese and children can take a ride on a small merry-go-round or pony, have a try at pottery or making a sheet of paper, or play medieval table games. Juggling, belly dancing and aerial acrobatics will close the market every night with a spectacular fire show. Craft tradition is slowly disappearing in Spain, which is why Amata has coined the term ‘artesanía de autor’ to describe its unusual markets, roughly translated as "craft work made and sold by the craftsmen himself". A spokesperson for the organizing group said: “There will be nothing imported or made in factories on the market, which Amata and La Nucia Town Hall see eye to eye on, as there are far too many organisers setting up so-called medieval markets that are little more than pound shops in historic clothing” Free parking in the underground parking of les Nits and open air car park at the back of the village, both just 100 yards from the market, will be available on each of the evenings which begin at 6.00pm and last until late at night. APASA Summer Sale
APASA will hold their much anticipated Summer Sale next week at their shelter in Javea. Taking place on Thurday July 6 from 6.00pm until 8.00pm, shoppers are guaranteed a bargain with 50 per cent off all clothes and all books only 50 cents. APASA was founded in 1999 by a group of various nationalities, Spanish, English, German and Swiss, with the aim of rescuing those animals that were evidently abandoned, ill-treated or lost. Initially there were just a dozen dogs, now there are over 250, needing full time staff. APASA rely greatly on volunteers, working in the shelter, walking dogs and at their many fund-raising events. All proceeds raised at the Summer Sale will directly fund the goal of making the lives of the dogs better and provide essential care for them. Green tea
Most men suffer from stress at some time in their lives, whether it be work, relationship, life event, health or financially related. We can often remain unaware that stress is affecting us as different people react to life challenges in different ways and what one person may perceive as stressful, another may not. People also experience differing symptoms when they are stressed but the most common include the following, physical symptoms: Headaches, nausea, stomach ache, change in bowel habits, loss of appetite or overeating, tiredness, insomnia, chest pains, palpitations, erectile dysfunction and hyperventilation Psychological symptoms: Irritability or impatience, tearfulness, feeling overwhelmed, unable to switch off, feeling worried, poor concentration, being disinterested in other aspects of life and loss of sense of humour. Taking steps to breakdown a big problem into smaller parts that are easier to address, is a good place to start when trying to discover what triggers our stress. We should also ensure look after our physical health by sleeping and eating well, whilst cutting down on excess smoking and drinking alcohol wherever possible. Finding time for physical exercise, by organising out time will help to release feel good pheronomes in our bodies and more importantly we should not forget to factor in breaks and periods of down time. If the original trigger that caused the stress settles down or disappears but behaviour, feelings and physical symptoms persist it may be a sign that our stress is turning into depression or anxiety. Feeling sad, a loss of appetite, sleeping poorly, and concentration difficulties for more than two weeks, especially if the stressful trigger has passed, may be a clue that we are becoming depressed. However, experiencing symptoms of feeling afraid, panic attacks, irritability or restlessness for more than two weeks this may point to anxiety. Most crucially, taking little enjoyment in life, starting to feel worthless, having thoughts of self-harm or considering that life is not worth living are signs that we should seek urgent help. Heat and sleep The recent heatwave sweeping across the country has caught many of us off guard, as our bodies try desperately to catch up with the sudden jump in temperatures. It’s bad enough during the day, as we try and dodge the sun by sitting under parasols, walking on the shady side of the street and popping into Mercadona just to hang around the fridges. However, although the warm, balmy nights may be perfect for alfresco entertainment they can also be problematic for sleep and banging up the air-con to max isn’t always the answer. Ideally, bedrooms should be around 16-18°C, but when the outside temperature remains higher, or your bedroom has retained the heat from the day, it can be difficult to keep cool. Your body temperature needs to lower slightly before you go to sleep which is why it's difficult to drop off when you're too hot. Here’s some top tips to help you sleep like a baby kitten between now and September:

Top tips for your Spanish garden With a hot, dry climate you might have low expectations of what’s possible when it comes to creating colour in your garden. However, you might be surprised what can be achieved with a little advice. In the height of the summer, looking out across the landscape of southern Spain you might find yourself wondering how anything can survive there. The ground becomes dry and hard and July and August may experience no rain at all. The first important task is to suspend any vision you had that’s based on your garden ‘back home’. Chances are that the plants that flourished there are going to be distinct foreigners in your plot in Spain. Neither should you visualise an oasis of lush green grass, just chase away your pre-conceptions and embrace the climatic conditions you find as these must dictate your choice, along with your own circumstances of course. RESIDENT OR NON-RESIDENT: Your first consideration when creating your garden in Spain is the amount of time you are intending to spend here. It’s self-evident that over the summer only the hardiest of cacti, yucca or palm is likely to survive for long periods of time without water. Succulent plants and cordylines are two more species that don’t need regular watering and can wait until your return to Spain. They might not be the delicate, flowering plants you’re after but they will provide rich greenery to welcome you when you return. THE CONDITIONS YOU PROVIDE: The next issue you must consider carefully is that of the plot itself. Do you have a patio that you will decorate with pot plants or have you land where you’re intending to plant? In some cases Spanish gardens are a mixture of the two with the majority of space being tiled and perhaps just a small
section of patio dug out to provide an area of earth as a base. Gardens in Spain can look very different from what you’re used to back home. Lush grassed lawns are not a real option due to their need for frequent watering. Instead you are better advised to landscape any land you have with tiling, fountains and seating areas. You will want to create areas of shade and light and excellent effects can be created with a relatively small number of plants to care for. WATERING If you do decide on pot plants you should water these two
or three times a week in the summer and once or twice in the winter. It might come as a surprise that you do not have to water them every day. Pot plants can easily become waterlogged and the roots will rot. Overwatering is one of the biggest mistakes that people make as even during the hottest periods, your plants will not need watering every day. During the spring and summer you should add some liquid fertiliser to the water once a week, then autumn and winter this should be reduced to every 15 days.
Brits officially get in to gardening at 41 41 is the age we officially get in to gardening, a new survey has revealed. Researchers took an in depth look into the precise time in our lives that we turn our attention to our outdoor spaces - and found that it is not until we reach 41 that we become green fingered. Up until this point, nearly three in ten adults continue to rely on elderly parents to sort out their outdoor space - with one in twenty even calling on grandparents to tend to their gardens. A further one in ten resort to watching clips on YouTube to help remedy their horticultural issues. The poll by Fiskars revealed a third of clueless adults have NEVER trimmed a hedge and nearly a quarter haven’t ever potted a plant. A further 23 per cent of the 1,500 adults polled claim to have NEVER mown a lawn or raked leaves in the garden. The survey showed more than a third of respondents describe their garden as a place to escape it all and one in ten said they were immensely proud of the way their outdoor space looked. A quarter of Brits see themselves as a keen gardener – with more than half of adults itching for summer to arrive so they can get back out in to their gardens. However, half of the adults that took part in the poll said they wouldn’t be able to identify a fuchsia, 40 per cent would struggle to spot a pansy and more than half wouldn’t know a germanium when they saw one. Getting stung by stinging nettles, pulling up a flower, mistaking it for a weed and trapping fingers in deckchairs are just some of the calamities Brits have faced when trying to tackle the garden. Cutting the grass with no blade in the mower, putting your hand in cat mess and treading on an upturned rake were other common faux pas. Kid’s toys strewn everywhere, the grass growing too quickly and not having the right tools for the job are among the things that annoy us about our gardens.

Faster, Higher, Car trade growth at Farther: The great record levels VW car scandal Less than 18 months ago, news surfaced that one of the most trusted and popular car brands ever had deliberately misled millions of their customers. Never see a red light again Imagine every time you go to work, to do some shopping in the car or have a day out in one of the busy towns and cities without ever hitting a single red traffic light. It might not be happening in Spain for the foreseeable future, but that day is coming nearer for parts of the UK.
UK Automotive’s 18th annual Sustainability Report reveals the manufacturing sector turned over a record £77.5 billion in 2016, marking a seventh consecutive year of growth, while productivity, production output and vehicle sales also increased. UK car and commercial vehicle production and new vehicle registration volumes grew to record levels in 2016, up 8.9% and 0.2% respectively. Meanwhile, employment in manufacturing remained stable at 169,000 jobs, resulting in productivity reaching a record high of 11.8 vehicles produced for each person employed in the industry. The average manufacturing worker generated more than £130,000 for the British economy, up 9.8% on 2015. The number of livelihoods dependent on the sector as a whole stood at 814,000 across manufacturing, retail, distribution and repair services. The record turnover by UK motor manufacturing represents a 9.0% increase on 2015, with the additional value added to the UK economy rising 7.3% to £21.5 billion. The industry also upped its investment in innovation; with R&D spend reaching £2.75 billion last year, up from £2.5 billion in 2015. Mike Hawes, Chief Executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said: “Today’s results demonstrate how UK Automotive is delivering growth across the UK, boosting productivity and improving environmental performance. This has been driven by massive investment, in new models, plants, innovation and one of the world’s most skilled workforces. However, for UK auto manufacturing to continue to thrive, we need clarity on the future, post Brexit, to encourage ongoing investment and growth.” Key to the UK automotive sector’s continued success is its highly skilled workforce. In addition to increasing productivity, industry has improved the working environment of its employees, demonstrated by the high retention rate, with staff turnover falling to just 5% in 2016 compared with the national average of 16.5%. At the same time, investment in skills increased, with the number of days’ training per employee up 9.1%. In addition, Sustainability Report signatories reported an intake of 870 new apprentices last year, on top of the 800 apprentices that were retained. The sector’s improved social and economic performance was achieved while simultaneously reducing the environmental impact of its manufacturing processes. In 2016, CO2 emissions per vehicle produced fell by -2.9%, energy use per vehicle fell by -3.2% and water use by -3.5%. Waste to landfill was cut by more than a third (-33.7%) to a new record low of 0.9% of all waste produced, with almost 90% recycled, while manufacturers continued to invest in onsite renewable energy production, in 2016 producing 57.7GHh of energy – enough to power 14,420 homes. Industry has continued to invest heavily in developing the latest low-emission technology to address the air quality challenge. Alternatively fuelled vehicle (AFV) registrations increased in 2016, up 22.2% to account for 3.3% of the market, making the UK the biggest market for plug-in electric cars in Europe. At the same time, average new car CO2 emissions fell for a 19th year to just 120.1g/km – 33.6% below levels in 2000.

Five thousand youth footballers heading to Benidorm Around 270 teams from twenty four different countries will arrive in Benidorm this weekend to prepare for the Costa Blanca Cup youth football tournament. The prestigious tournament kicks off on Monday July 3, with a parade of the 5000 players along Benidorm’s Levante beachfront, finishing with an opening ceremony including fireworks and music in the Julio Iglesias Auditorium. Organisers of the tournament, which is now in it’s twenty fourth year, promote a spirit that goes beyond football, aiming for sportsmanship and friendships, between players of all teams. The boys and girls teams are aged from 11 to 18 and for many of the players the tournament will be their first time away from home without parents, offering the opportunity to bond with their teams in sport, but to also interact with young people from different cultures, Past experience has proved that the tournament allows the youngsters to discover much about themselves, whilst respecting diversity, as an essential part of respect and tolerance. It is sport, in this case football, which becomes a transmitter of basic values for the personal development of the young participants. Each team is guaranteed four games, which are played on fullsize real and artificial grass pitches in the Northern Costa Blanca towns of Benidorm, Altea, Villajoyosa, Benissa, La Nucia, Calpe and Polop. Teams will play in First phase matches, with qualifiers going through to final phase matches later in the week, until finals day and the closing party arrives on Saturday July 8. This year’s tournament will see a separate ‘Inclusive’ two day tournament, with four teams taking part, including one from newly promoted English side’s Newcastle United Foundation. A fan zone, where spectators can eat, drink, buy merchandise, mingle and share experiences with each other, will be open from Monday next week. Blistering BBC Setford Trophy On a blistering hot afternoon at Benitatchell Bowling Club, the final of the Setford Trophy competition took place between Jackie Munt and Trevor Rush. The bowling achieved a really high standard in very trying condition, well supported by BBC members, and turned out to be a really fitting tribute to the late Terry Setford. This competition, which is only open to newer bowlers, was inaugurated by Terry who introduced and coached the majority of beginners at the club over recent years. Pauline Setford presented the prize to the winner, Jackie Munt, and congratulated both bowlers on a terrific game which everyone was sure Terry watched. From a spectators point of view, in a real ding dong affair, Jackie clawed
back into the game after Trevor raced into the lead.
Gritty bowling from both players culminated in the final end with the
score standing at a whisker close, 18-17 to Trevor. Jackie was left holding three with a last wood and under pressure, bowled a superb concentrated draw to make full house and the match. Thanks were given to John Hendrick for marking the match and to all the spectators who supported the finalist. The BBC summer triples winners were, ‘No Such Luck’ who win the BBC Summer Triples Title from ‘Summer Mavericks’ on shot difference. Both teams clear of the field by 4 points in the BBC Summer Triples League sponsored by Direkt Optik Opticians and Ibex Insurance.
