Manhunt widened for wanted Brit The Guardia Civil have released a photograph of the man they want to interview in connection with the serious stabbing of a woman in Orihuela Costa three days ago. by Andy Mansell The fifty-three-year old, British man, who unconfirmed, local sources named as David Grundy, worked as a taxi driver and has not been seen since the incident. He is thought to have fled the crime scene, driving a grey Hyundai 110 saloon, belonging to British owners, heading towards the south of the province. The victim, also British, identified by unconfirmed local sources as Nicola Anne Walker Houghton, 41, was found by her daughter at 9.00am last Tuesday, lying in a pool of blood with a large knife sticking out of her back. The daughter immediately called emergency services to the house in Lomas de Don Juan, Campoamor that her mother shared with the missing man. The victim was rushed to Torrevieja hospital in a critical condition and later underwent emergency surgery on the wound in the ICU department. Continued on page 4

Greenpeace target Guardamar by Andy Mansell A video has been released on social media, by environmental action group Greenpeace showing the accumulation of plastic waste on the beaches and Segura estuary area of Guardamar. The environmentalist have launched a European campaign to denounce the pollution of plastic waste in the Mediterranean and are using Guardamar del Segura as an example. Greenpeace have spread images of the accumulation of hundreds of containers in the mouth of the river and a video, which has been shared thousands of times by social networks. It shows, in graphic proof of how plastic waste badly affects the Mediterranean with images taken at the mouth of the river Segura. Thousands of plastic containers, mainly drinks bottles, are carried by currents and tides to the beaches and the sea every day. There they decompose for decades or centuries to form the microplastics that feed the growing pollution of the oceans. Guardamar town council believe that responsibility for the pollutionthat lies with the Hydrographic Confederation (CHS), clearance company, who ceased

work on the area eighteen months ago owing to budgetary issues. Until two years ago the removal of the residue in the channel was done mechanically, managed by the CHS. At that point there was a floating screen that contained them and on one side there was a machine that automatically took care of removing
them. However, the machine broke down a year and a half ago and was never repaired. Since the embarrassing video surfaced, CHS has now committed to repair that machine and fix the floating screen. Funds from Central Government allocated for winter storms damage will be used to pay for the cleaning project.

Murcian Police arrest man for killing neighbour

by Andy Mansell An eighty-year-old man was due to go on trial yesterday, accused of killing his fifty seven year old neighbour in a dispute over land. Police officers were alerted by two young men who had encountered the eighty year old man, Juan Lopez, known locally as ‘El de Campo’, shotgun in hand around 21.00h last Tuesday evening. Lopez had asked them to call emergency services because he had just shot his next door neighbour, Manuel Leal Manzanera and thought he may be dead. When they arrived, the emergency
medics were unable to save the life of the victim, who was already lying dead in an orchard on land he owned in Ribera de Molina del Segura. The assailant willingly gave himself up without providing resistance. The deceased had inherited a piece of land from his uncle, adjacent to that of his alleged killer around 12 months ago, realising immediately that the land was being used by his neighbour. An ongoing argument ensued regarding the eighty year old’s continued trespassing, damaging trees and crops and harassing Manzanera with threats and insults, resulting in a denouncement
from the new owner late last year. After another argument on the night in question, police believe, the alleged killer went into his house, picked up his shotgun, before returning to the orchard and shooting his neighbour in the face. The victim made two chilling calls to his wife before the attack. An initial one explained that Lopez had threatened to kill him and the second one, was to tell her to phone 112 because the assailant was holding a shotgun to his head. The victim lived in San Javier and had been a member of the town council between 2007 and 2011.
Alicante-Elche Airport best in Europe In the year it celebrates it’s fiftieth anniversary, AlicanteElche Airport has won a best in Europe award for airports with passengers in the 10 to 25 million a year category. The prestigious award is given by the Airport Council International, which governs 90% of European airports, around 500 in total. Alicante-Elche beat off competition from the airports of Vienna, Edinburgh, Athens, Hamburg and Düsseldorf in the same category. Judges marked each airport on various criteria, including, facilities, customer service (passengers and airlines ), Security, environmental awareness, operations, retail and external and institutional relations. The judges emphasized the airport’s marketing activities route network, new routes, and new airlines, plus the attention given to passengers, especially children and people with reduced mobility, as well as the improvement in the fluidity of security controls. They also highlighted the programs related to runway safety and the advanced tower project whose ultimate goal is to improve the punctuality of flights. However, the jury valued, above all, the safety and the level of attention given to improving the passenger experience at the airport. The awards, announced in Paris earlier in the week also proved good for Madrid-Barajas Airport, which finished first in the 25 million plus passengers category. ACI Europe represents 500 airports in 45 European countries, handling 90% of Europe's commercial air traffic with 1,900 million passengers per year.

Torrevieja postman sentenced to 12 months in prison The Torrevieja postman who failed to deliver 226 letters and packages between 2011 and 2014 was sentenced to 12 months in prison and fined â‚Ź900 by the Court of Alicante last week. The sentence, passed by the High Court of Justice of the Region of Valencia (TSJCV) also disqualified the postman from employment within the public sector for four and a half years. This was however suspended for a period of three years. The postman hid the undelivered mail in his locker and when the Inspection Unit asked him to open it, he said that he did not have the key. He later returned to his locker and attempted to flush the undelivered mail down the toilet. The court also found him guilty of having committed misdeeds with the delivery of certified mail, in that he left the mail in the mailboxes without obtaining a signature from the recipient, often signing the receipts himself. There is no appeal against the judgment.
Elderly man dies in Torreta Florida swimming pool An 87-year-old man died last Saturday in a swimming pool in the Torreta Florida urbanisation in Torrevieja, according to the Information and Emergency Coordination Center (CICU). A SAMU ambulance was dispatched to the scene of the incident, that occurred at around 6.15pm.

Man sent to prison without bail in Torrevieja on paedophilia charges
by Tahnee Wright A 52-year-old homeless Portugese man was arrested in Torrevieja earlier this week on paedophilia charges. The perpetrator was brought to the attention of the Guardia Civil as they received a complaint from a member of the public who reported that he caught the man – who slept outside an ATM in the city – showing a 12year-old boy videos of a paedophilic nature whilst touching himself intimately. Officers immediately focused on finding the victim and his parents and a day later,
the victim when questioned told them that the perpetrator had shown him three pornographic videos involving young children. The victim also told officers that the perpetrator had offered his 13-year-old brother €10 in exchange for oral sex, which his brother later confirmed. Officers located the perpetrator and arrested him for offences of child corruption, possession of child pornography, possession of files containing paedophilic content and theft. They seized his electronic devices – 1 mobile phone and 3 tablets. He was sent to prison and awaits trial.
Cat bones unearthed at site in Spain Possible evidence for the medieval trade in cat fur has been uncovered at a site in eastern Spain. Some 900 domestic cat bones were discovered in a pit where crops may have been stored at the farming site of El Bordellet. The bones’ cut marks and fractures are consistent with what has been found in skinning experiments. Most of the bones are from cats between the ages of nine and 20 months at the time of death, likely because the animals would have been large, but their coats still relatively undamaged. Zooarchaeologist Lluis Lloveras of the University of Barcelona said cat fur was widely used during the Middle Ages in northern Europe to make coats, collars, and sleeves. ‘Some texts also make reference to the healing qualities of cat skin, but also to its possible harmfulness,’ he said. Domestic cat fur was less valuable than the fur of wild cats, he added and was worn by the less wealthy and austere social groups, such as nuns. Lloveras also notes, however, that a horse skull, a goat horn and a chicken eggshell were found alongside the cat bones. ‘All these particular animal remains have been associated with ritual practices in the Middle Ages as well as in later times,’ he said.

Spanish Prime Minister fights his corner by Tahnee Wright Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy defended his government and its success in getting Spain's economy out of crisis during a marathon no-confidence debate called against him after countless corruption scandals involving his ruling Popular Party. After over 12 hours of debate, a confidence vote was scheduled for Wednesday but was not expected to get the required backing of an absolute majority of deputies needed to oust Conservative Rajoy. Rajoy battled chiefly with Pablo Iglesias, leader of the far-left Podemos party, who presented the motion and his candidacy as an alternative leader. But Podemos only has 67 deputies in the 350-seat parliament and not many supporters. Iglesias said Rajoy would ‘be remembered as the president of corruption.’ Podemos' No. 2, Irene Montero, listed the dozens of corruption cases engulfing Rajoy's party and demanded that it ‘give the stolen money back, every cent of it and ask for forgiveness.’ Rajoy has been dragged into one of
the most damaging of the cases, an alleged kickbacks-for-contracts scheme to finance party activities. He testifies as a witness in the case July 26. He argued there were cases of corruption in all parties but said it was not ‘the norm’ and no case involved any member of his government. He accused of Podemos of being a radical group bent on upsetting Spain's stability. Rajoy, who has made economic growth and job creation his chief goals since first taking office in 2011, boasted that Spain in 2017 was growing at double the rate of its neighbours and creating a half-million jobs yearly. He said Iglesias' radicalness made him unfit to be prime minister and ‘would lead Spain back into crisis.’ The leading opposition Socialist party, with 84 deputies, rejects Rajoy but is likely to abstain rather than support Iglesias, whom it deems to be an anti-establishment populist. Rajoy heads a minority government
since elections last year. His party, with 134 seats, should have the support of the centrist Ciudadanos party's 32 deputies and several smaller groups. Tuesday's debate came as Spain's central bank revised upward its 2017 growth forecast from 2.8 percent to 3.1 percent.

19-year-old arsonist arrested in Murcia
The Local Police of Murcia arrested a 19-year-old man alleged to be the infamous arsonist of recycling bins across the city. In recent months, over 55 bins in Santa Maria de Gracia and Vista Alegre have been reduced to ashes and on Sunday June 4, security cameras caught the firestarter in the act. At 4.15am the young man was videoed in city opening a recycling bin and throwing something inside, he then made his way towards an adjoining street where he did the same before making a run for it. Several Police units gave chase to the arsonist, who was caught on the corner of Calle Miguel de Cervantes and Calle Don Quijote. He was arrested and taken to San Andres District Commissary. The arsonist, born and raised in Murcia, is said by the Department of Development to have caused some €44,000 worth of damage. A student in the city of Cartagena, he is also believed to have burnt numerous recycling bins across the university campus.

Kids told to fan away the heat by Andy Mansell With six regions on an orange weather alert for extreme temperatures, a Madrid health official has suggested schoolchildren should make paper fans to combat the heat. Jesús Sánchez Martos said he is not a supporter of air conditioning in schools, and suggested that children should make fans out of paper to deal with the heat in their classrooms. Besides helping feel cooler, this activity could be part of “a very relevant occupational therapy for children, making [the fans] the way we used to when I was a kid: fold, fold, fold and there’s the fan,” said the regional official in statements to SER radio station. “Air conditioning is not the solution for everything.” “Classrooms could be ventilated,” he added, expressing a preference for “keeping hydrated, always having water in the classrooms.” The statements came on the same day that the Madrid health department activated a special plan to prevent negative health effects from the high temperatures recorded in the region and elsewhere in Spain, over the last few days. On Wednesday, there were several reports of Spanish school children suffering from bouts of vomiting, heatstroke and fainting. In the meantime, four days of “unusually high temperatures” are now giving way to an official heat wave, according to the Spanish weather service, AEMET. The meteorology agency said that the weather event will last at least into Sunday, and mostly affect central and southwestern Spain. Highs will reach 40 to 42ºC in many parts of the country, while lows will not drop below 22 to 25ºC at night. Stay in cool places, the shade or air-conditioned spaces for as much time as possible and cool down frequently if out in the sun. Avoid physical activity and outdoors sports and activities
in the middle of the day. Wear lightweight clothing that breathes. Do not leave anybody in locked, parked vehicles, particularly children and the elderly, as well as pets. Consult your doctor in case of symptoms that last more than one hour and that could be caused by high temperatures. Keep medicines in a cool place: heat can affect their composition and their effect. Eat light food that helps replace salts lost through perspiration: salads, fruit, greens, juices, etc

An interview with Steve Day from Oak Land Furniture Michel EuEsden Managing Director went along to Oak Land Furniture to meet and interview Steve Day Managing Director of Oak Land Furniture Spain. The Euro Weekly News were delighted to be able to get the interview as Steve is not well known to hold them and doesn't like the limelight so it was certainly an exclusive scoop for the coasts number one expat newspaper. MICHEL: Well Steve, here we are at your San Pedro store and I must say it looks magnificent with such a large choice not only of solid oak furniture but also wonderful sofa's too, firstly I would like to say thank you for allowing us this interview as I understand you don't like publicity and interviews, may I firstly ask as it's intriguing why is that? STEVE: Ha ha, straight to the point as always Michel, wouldn't expect anymore from you, but that's why I enjoy my team working alongside the EWN Media Group as it does
exactly what it say's it's going to do. You have a fantastic group of newspapers here in Spain. MICHEL: Thanks for the compliment Steve but you haven't answered my question and this is only my first one! STEVE: I guess I'm quite a shy person deep down but it's more than that, the business is not about me, it's all about the furniture and my great team of employees, without those both the business wouldn't achieve what it does. I often wish wardrobes could talk as they and other items are the real success of the business! At the end of the day if you haven't got the quality product then there's no longevity to your business, rather like your newspaper hey Michel! If you printed rubbish people wouldn't read your newspa-
per, but as we know you deliver a great read and that's why you have been on the coast for so many years! It's the same for my furniture, we deliver a full USP, 100% solid oak throughout the product, building a product that will last the client a lifetime. It's not about me, it's about the furniture and so I like to sit in the background and allow the furniture to stand out and do the talking, customers can come in store and see the quality of product and it stands out. On the shop floor our ethos is the furniture sings out and the store staff just answer questions and explain procedures, we don't employ sales people in effect as the aim is to build the highest quality and designs that stands out. MICHEL: Steve, whilst we are not here to talk about my newspapers thank you again for the compliment, but yes we carry that same ethos within our business. Now can we stick to the questions without the swing back to me! So obviously all this lovely furniture in store, who designs it all and where does it actually come from? STEVE: Well as you can see the cuts of wood that we use to manufacture the furniture are of the highest quality, the wood itself comes from North America from substantial forests complying with all strict EU timber regulations. We use the highest grade which is North American white oak grade 1 on all the natural oak finished ranges. These are the cleanest cuts with the least knots if any and the most beautiful grains. With our rustic oak finishes we use grade 2 as we want the slight blemishes and knots to create the rustic look. Anyway the logs are sent to our factories in both China and Vietnam where 90% of the worlds oak furniture is produced, the factories work to our designs and produce the furniture in mass to ensure the manufacturing process is economical to be able to offer our low retail prices. So for instance we do a production run of double wardrobes and then ship 40 foot sea containers to the warehouse in Swindon of double wardrobes, Swindon warehouse receives on a daily basis around 35-40 containers per day, every day 6 days a week. The designs of our furniture are all exclusive to us and design protected and are all actually designed inhouse by ourselves which I feel we are very good at, but this also saves huge designer fees to which again we pass on the savings to our customers. Designer fees are very large in the industry we are in, so as we all have an eye for design we make some great savings.
MICHEL: So Steve do you go to the Far East yourself to the factories and what's it like there if so? STEVE: In the early days of the business, the answer is yes, probably spent 50% of the year there, as we had to train factories how we expected our furniture quality to be produced. I lived in Dalian which is north China, where the majority of factories are as well as Qingdao, China whilst huge is strange as different products are manufactured in different regions, although we did get down to Shanghai and Beijing many times. North China is beautiful and not how you would imagine, lovely coast line, great sea food and clean air! Over the last few years China has changed so much, I remember the first ever trip back in 2001 and as myself and my travel companion went down for breakfast we didn't like the look of the food as it was quite extreme to say the least, so we decided to stick with what looked hard boiled eggs, the waiter brought them over in a basket with a pair of chops sticks, we knocked the top off the egg to discover the chop sticks were for eating the chick! Thankfully as the years have gone by and the country has become more modern better food is now more available! I don't go as much now as all the production is all built up and as the business has grown, Quality Control teams are all now in place. Vietnam we now use too, they have caught up with the supply market and chain and do a fantastic job as well. In fact in furniture making terms they are now more competitive and trips there are enjoyable, but again less frequent now as QC teams on the ground. Lovely places to visit but now I focus my main time here in Spain in the sunshine as we have a lot of work to do as we progress through Spain, Portugal and France. MICHEL: Yes Steve I saw on your website that delivery options are available to Portugal and France too, was that planned? STEVE: In truth no, it wasn't in the initial plans but when we launched in Spain some 8 months ago now, lots of inquiries came in via the website requesting it and so we set up the delivery infrastructure to incorporate the ex-pats in those countries as well. No point turning away valued business! MICHEL: You haven't hung around there then Steve, so what was the initial plan and why Spain?

STEVE: At my age don't have time to hang around these days Michel! If I was as young as you maybe I would have more time! MICHEL: For someone who claims to be shy you are a bit of a charmer that's for sure! Now back to the question why Spain? STEVE: Firstly I have always loved Spain and it was a good excuse to move here, but more importantly we could see the potential, we had customers on a weekly basis inquiring in the UK operation if we delivered to Spain, at the time we didn't and customers were paying a small fortune to ship the furniture over themselves. So clearly there was a market opportunity and a service to provide. Customers obviously know our product and brands so in realistic terms it made sense. MICHEL: Many people reading this could be thinking about starting a business here themselves, how did you find it to the UK and how different is it? STEVE: Patience is required for starters and few deep breaths at times but overall it's rather much the same although trading patterns are very different to the UK, the main reason being that the ex-pat market is very spread out along the coast in the main so we get less people to the showroom and more through the website, as the ex-pat knows our brands and products from the UK and of course see the UK adverts on TV here in Spain we had to build the infrastructure internally to cover all options to enable us to deliver further distances from our Malaga based warehouse. For instance delivery vans at home go out for a days work but here in Spain they can go out for a weeks work. It took a lot of planning and selecting the correct delivery teams was important too. Yes of course we have the product but we have to back the product up with the service. MICHEL: Yes I agree, the customer should always receive good service, I've taken a look at the reviews on your website and see that you have a 9.8 five star rating on the independent review website Trust Pilot, that's very very impressive! STEVE: I'm sorry it's not impressive enough, it should be 10.10 in my book, but we will achieve it. Yes it's a great score because we work so hard to deliver the full customer service at all times, but I always believe there's always room to improve. Everything is about the customer within our Company. As we cover so many thousands of miles on delivery routes so our customers can enjoy the benefits of our furniture, we have to strive hard and we do with a great delivery infrastructure as well as fantastic communication channels from the team to the customer. MICHEL: So Steve simple question what's your biggest frustration? STEVE: Honestly, foot flow to the store, yes I know that the trading patterns are here different in Spain, but I still can't get my head around it totally, yes I get it's a modern world and people use the internet and website, I get they know our quality product and brand but it still frustrates me, that's probably because I'm used to large store foot flows, the Store Manager Nik probably holds the largest conversion rate ever because everyone who comes to store purchases in the main as they have already done their homework via the web. I guess I'm just an old fashioned retailer but I will always find it strange that a customer will order say from Mijas on the web when the stores only 15 minutes away. I guess it doesn't really make any difference to us but we do like to show off our fantastic products and showroom. Just a personal frustration really, just an age thing I guess! MICHEL: Okay that's your frustrations, but do you have a pet hate?
STEVE: I try not to have them as it's never the end of the world, but there are a few. Advertising Reps calling the store phone number has always been one for 30 odd years now, the phone line is for our customers to inquire about furniture not a free tool for Advertising reps who can't be bothered to call in store and show what they have to offer. It does really wind me up that one especially as the phone line could be engaged whilst a customer is trying to get through. I can't believe that advertising reps can't see its so annoying and reduces their chances of obtaining business! I have to say we don't get it too bad here as we have carefully selected our media partners like yourself Michel but it's a pet hate of many years. Calls have dropped in recent years but at the same time spam emails have gone up which are just as bad. I believe if you have something decent to offer go out and demonstrate and sell it. MICHEL: So with the showroom open in San Pedro, the website clearly fully operational and the delivery structure all in place with deliveries basically going out on a weekly basis across Europe to what appears rapid rate what's next? STEVE: The first thing is always to both maintain and improve where possible standards and customer service. Nicola Kuhn: The junior French Open doubles champion has pulled out of Wimbledon Weary tennis champion Nicola Kuhn has played his last match as a junior after winning his first Grand Slam title in Paris on Saturday. by Donna Gee The Torrevieja teenager and his doubles partner Zsombor Piros were crowned junior champions at the French Open after a convincing 6-4 6-4 victory over US pair Danny Thomas and Vasil Kirkov. However, exhausted Kuhn had earlier missed out on the coveted singles crown, losing 7-6 6-3 to lanky Australian Alexei Popyrin after coming through a near-impossible threematch playing schedule the previous day. Blond battler Nico won all three - then became a victim of his own success after storming into both boys' finals and dispatching world number one Miomir Kecmanovic in a nailbiting singles semi-final. The build-up at Roland Garros reached its peak last Friday, when Kuhn inflicted a rare defeat on Kecmanovic, then teamed up with Hungarian Piros to plough through two tough doubles matches and set up a Saturday showdown with Thomas and Kirkov. Austrian-born Kuhn, whose colourful background embraces a German father, Russian mother and residency in Spain since he was three months old, went into Saturday's matches on the back of nine straight wins over the previous five days. But after effectively playing EIGHT sets of pressure tennis last Friday, something had to give. The crunch came in his singles showdown on Saturday morning with the lanky Popyrin, whose route to the final had been eased by an early exit from the doubles and a relatively easy singles semi-final against Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Ironically, Kuhn might well have won the singles crown had he accepted an offer from Piros to ease his playing burden by withdrawing the partnership from the doubles. Nico had been urged by his family not to take on the enormous task of competing for both the singles and doubles titles. And as his schedule began to get out of hand, Piros – who had already been knocked out of the singles - offered to abandon his own progress by withdrawing the partnership from the doubles. Kuhn, who was 17 in March, will be eligible to play at junior level until the end of 2019 but says he will no longer compete in 18-and-
under tournaments after pulling out of next month's junior Wimbledon in the wake of his Paris exertions. He would have been among the top seeds for the junior singles title at Wimbledon but the lure of full-time professionalism and top-class opponents has not surprisingly won the day. "No more junior tennis for me. I am done with it!'' he joked, reflecting on my observation that the under-18 circuit is all work and no pay. Kuhn and his Torrevieja-based back-up team, headed by coach Pedro Caprotta, will now focus all their attention on the men's circuit and maximising Nico's assault on the ATP rankings. He is currently listed 521 in the world behind No.1 Andy Murray and has targeted a place in the top 200 by the end of the year, which could well make him the highest ranked 17-year-old on the planet.
Triathlon of Torrevieja attracts thousands Over 500 triathletes visit Torrevieja this weekend, as the third Triathlon of Torrevieja takes place on Sunday. Places for the popular race sold out over a month ago and will see athletes carry out a run, swim and cycle a ‘Sprint’ or ‘Olympic’ distance race. Nearly 2000 people are expected the flock to the city for the event, with the main parts of the race taking part in the Dique de Levante, the Marina Salinas and the Paseo de Vista Alegre area.

Life-like baby dolls on display in Spain
by Tahnee Wright The ‘Reborn’ festival in Bilbao took place last weekend. Not to be confused with a musical festival of some sort, the trade fair displayed a selection of baby dolls, known as vinyl babies, that have been made with such precision it is incredibly hard to tell if they are real or not. The life-like creations by designers from Los Babyclon workshop are made by painting layers of platinum silicone (the same material used by cosmetic surgeons in their operations) over a traditional vinyl doll. Attendees over the weekend were able to see a set of baby Avatar dolls, a trio of newborns with strange markings on their heads and even a baby chimpanzee wearing a hat. There was also a selection of animatronic dolls that can move and make noises, albeit when they have been sufficiently charged. The dolls come with a hefty price tag with the stars of the show, the Avatar types, costing around €2,500. The animatronic dolls fetch over €3,000 each, although the more basic creations are available for around €1,200. The show was the first of its kind in the northern Spanish city and continues a craze
started in Germany. Cristina Iglesias, the Director of Los Babyclon, told Vice that they are the only company in the world that specialises in making the babies made from silicon. She said: 'This business is practically the only of its kind in the world you could say. There are various doll designers but they are made in a more traditional way.’ 'At first I thought this was very strange, I didn't understand that baby dolls could be made from silicone. After I saw that the products are saleable I decided to pursue the business but make them in a distinctive and better way than what already existed in the market.' Despite looking incredibly realistic Cristina says most who come across the designs do not confuse them with real babies as most of their key clients are collectors or those who wish to create their own with the starter kits they sell. Cristina added: '’There are two branches in the sale of these dolls: one is the final collector who buys at a factory price and another is the reborn artist, who buy the Babyclon directly from the mould, paint it and prepare it and then they sell it to collectors.'
88-year-old man hit by hire car in Torrevieja An 88-year-old man was injured after being hit by a hire car in the centre of Torrevieja on Monday. The accident occurred at around 1.15pm on Monday afternoon on calle Azorin. The man was hit by the hire car as he crossed the street and was left lying on the pavement. A doctor who happened to be at the scene advised the man not to move whilst they waited for emergency services to arrive. Minutes later, Policia Local officers arrived followed by a SAMU ambulance. The man remained on the pavement and complained of severe pain in his back and arms. He was taken to the University Hospital of Torrevieja with polytrauma. The man was not crossing the street at a pedestrian crossing.

Free to roam As of yesterday, June 15, 2017, some 500 million people throughout the European Union (EU) will be able to use their mobile phones for making calls and going online in any member state without incurring so-called roaming charges; in other words, at the same price as if they were at home. by Andy Mansell Despite the limitations the EU has imposed, the move will mean huge savings for consumers: a decade ago, a three-minute call meant a roaming surcharge of €2 on top of the cost of a national call. Over the last decade, the EU has battled against the telecoms operators to impose a deadline on surcharges for calls made by customers while traveling throughout the 28-member bloc. As a result, the cost of calls has come down 92% over the last five years, while the cost of using the internet on cellphones while overseas fell by 96% over the same period. Consumer associations in Spain have welcomed the end of roaming, describing the surcharges as “abusive.” The Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) says the move “brings the EU toward a real single market in the tele-

The Confederation of Consumers and Users (CECU) noted: “This is a long-awaited change, one demanded and fought for by consumers’ associations.” But Spanish consumer rights group Facua says that users will make “zero savings,” pointing out that the main operators have been steadily increasing prices over recent months in a move that, in some cases, has breached consumer protection laws. The European Telecommunications Network Operators’ Association estimates that between 2015 and 2020 the reduced cost of roaming will cost its members some €7 billion, a figure the European Commission puts at a far lower €1.2 billion,
while Berec, the EU’s telecoms regulatory body, puts the losses in revenue at €4.7 billion. The European Commission has warned that it will be monitoring attempts by telecoms operators to increase prices, even those that include extra services, in the wake of the end roaming. “In some countries, there are some tendencies to increase prices. This means that the national regulators and the European Commission will have to address these issues very seriously,” warns Andrus Ansip, the European Commissioner for Digital Single Market and Vice President of the European Commission.

The Eurostat report, puts Spain at 91% of the average on clothing prices, however other European countries outside the Eurozone, Bulgaria and Hungary are considerably cheaper for clothes. Sweden at 136% and Denmark at 132% were the highest in Europe. Spain is the 11th cheapest in Europe
for alcohol and tobacco at 86%, with Bulgaria again the cheapest (56%) and Ireland the highest (175%). In terms of food and non-alcoholic beverages, the cheapest EU countries were Poland and Romania, with prices 62% of the European average, whilst the most expensive were Denmark (148%) and Sweden (126 %). In the case of Spain, prices were 95% of the EU average. And in the hotels and restaurants segment, Spanish prices were four-
teen points below the EU average in 2016 (86%), although the cheapest countries were Bulgaria (44%) and Romania (53%), whose prices were barely a third of Denmark (150 per cent) and Sweden (144 per cent). In the EU as a whole, Spain is the thirteenth country by price level, reaching 92% of the average of the Twenty-eight, while Denmark (139%), Ireland (125%) and Luxembourg and Sweden (124% Appear to be the most expensive countries in the EU.
Striking dockers paralyse Spanish ports A two day strike involving dock workers at major Spanish ports, including Alicante and Cartagena and others throughout the country is having a crippling effect. The second day of the 48-hour uninterrupted strike called by the union of dockers has again paralysed Spanish ports, as although minimum services are met, monitoring is almost non existant, according to union sources. The Minister of Public Works, Inigo de la Serna , stressed today from Leon that the strike involves losses of 12 million euros per day and is causing the permanent diversion of goods to other ports outside Spain. Unless the unions and employers Anesco reach an agreement earlier, next week intermittent stops are scheduled for Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Anesco will hold an extraordinary assembly tomorrow to analyze the latest proposal of the unions.

Ramadan prayer at the feet of Virgin Mary statue sparks outrage in Granada The Muslim community in Granada observed Ramadan last Saturday evening, praying at the site of a Virgin Mary statue. by Tahnee Wright The event, which took part in the Jardines del Triunfo and was promoted by the city with signs that read ‘come and know Ramadan,’ has sparked outrage among Granadian politicians, with a far-right party calling on Catholics to respond with a ‘night of prayer’ at the same site. Although the event was sanctioned by the City Hall and welcomed by Mayor Francisco Cuenca as an act promoting Granada as a ‘city of co-existence and tolerance,’ others took issue with the chosen location, as the Virgin Mary statue situated in the gardens is cherished by Catholics in the city. Several politicians took to Twitter to express their outrage, including MP Luis Salvador. ‘Mr. Paco Cuenca confuses tolerance and religious respect with provocation. Call for Muslim Prayers at the Virgin of Triumph?’ tweeted Salvador. That sentiment was echoed by politician Manuel Olivares, who took to Facebook to call the city's decision ‘regrettable,’ as well as ‘incomprehensible’ and ‘disrespectful.’ The far-right VOX party called for an ‘act of reparation’ to take place in the park on Tuesday evening, during
which Catholics would recite the rosary. In a statement, the party said the event is for ‘those who show their faith and defending the customs, values, and culture inherited from our parents.’ ‘And to protest against the council of this municipality who, by action or omission, have given permission and consent to a symbolic public space being taken over by the Muslim community.’ Meanwhile, the Partido Socialista Obrero Espanol (PSOE) councilor in Granada, Jemi Sanchez, defended the event saying ‘multiculturalism can never be a threat, it is an added value.’ ‘For the first time, the City of Granada supports its Muslim community wishing them a happy Ramadan in the gardens of Triumph,’ she wrote on Facebook. ‘[It is something] unprecedented that brings us closer and makes us more equal.’ Sixty-eight percent of Spaniards identify as Roman Catholic, according to a 2016 report from the Centre for Sociological Research. Granada was under Islamic rule for almost 800 years, until a reconquest took place in 1492 during the reign of Catholic King Fernando and Queen Isabel.

by Tahnee Wright Stagestruck, are a non-profit making Theatre Group, performing musicals and shows in the Costa Blanca South area which help to raise much needed funds for local charities. The group of thespians raised a fabulous 4500 euros from their recent production of ‘Carry on Pompei’, a comedy musical, cer-
tainly not suitable for children. Monies raised from the production will be donated to a number of needy local causes and one of the first recipients was Age Concern Costa Blanca who were given a cheque for 400 euros. Maureen Payne, President of Age Concern, was delighted to receive the cheque from members of the theatre group recently and expressed heartfelt
thanks to them for their generosity. Having already donated 1000 euros shared between the San Fulgencio Town hall for the theatre and the music school, the group will be donating 3000 euros to Torrevieja Alzheimer's Association later this week. A further 100 euros will be donated later in the year to the 'Life's too Short' charity.

He performs as a soloist with orchestra, concert and brass band and has won the title of World Whistling Champion at the global event in the USA. David's roots lie in playing the cornet from the age of 13, subsequently he played principal cornet and became the Cornet Champion of Great Britain. Long before David started playing the cornet in Saddleworth where he has lived all his life, it was his whistling that first caught the ear of his music teacher, he had perfect pitch and great style. Last Friday, Mayor of Benijofar, Luis Rodriguez Perez presented ACTS (Actors Community Theatre Society) with a plaque in recognition of the donations made by the group to Benijofar Social Services. Founded two years ago, ACTS has already presented three plays in the Casa de Cultura and as a result has been able to donate €6,000 to the crisis appeal. The money is used to support those in need in the municipality, providing funds towards the costs of essentials such as food, water and electricity. ACTS expresses its greatest thanks to all its supporters, those at the Ayuntamiento and the Casa de Cultura for their cooperation. SAMM spring bash
First destination on the SAMM Spring Bash was Isla Perdeguera , Sardine Island to enjoy a picnic
by Andy Mansell One of the highlights of the Sailing Association Mar Menor’s social calendar is the annual ‘Spring Bash’, held over three days at the Hotel Costa Narejos. This year’s event kicked off with a picnic on Isla Perdeguera (Sardine Island) in the Mar Menor. Twelve boats, both sail and power, made their way over with 38 SAMM members on board for a picnic on the beach. There was a good wind going and an even stronger wind on the return trip and the sun shone brightly all day.
Everyone enjoyed the wonderful ambience and had a great time, especially Steve Creed who seemed to love falling in the water as he did it three times. His wife Sandy who sat on the bow of the SAMM support boat on the return trip pretending to be Kate Winslet ended up just as wet. After the evening meal in the hotel the Commodore Paul Shard hosted a quiz night competition with questions that forced the teams to think out of the box. The regular SAMM monthly meeting was held on Wednesday morning but the planned afternoon petanque com-
petition was cancelled due to the high temperature, allowing everyone some time to relax. In the evening the members had a fabulous time at a Barn Dance with music and calling provided by the fantastic Ian Smith, supported by wife Carol and Bob Williams. Thursday, saw the diehards play a mini golf competition at Golf de Luxe, Los Alcazares, continuing on to the El Abasto Restaurant in La Aparecida for menu del dia where they were joined by more of the less energetic members to make some great memories to remember in the future.
Torrevieja U3A Summer party Last Friday evening around one hundred members of the Torrrevieja U3A assembed at the Vista Bella Golf course clubhouse at Entre Naranjas where they took over the whole area for their annual Summer Party. The evening was hosted by the owners and staff who provided an extensive buffet meal complete with drinks which was enjoyed by all. Whilst being able to take in the stunning views of the surrounding countryside from the amazing terrace, the party-goers were able to witness a beautiful sunset over the course and surrounding countryside. Entertainment was provided during the whole evening by the talented Bea who had most of the attendees up dancing and singing along to a wide variety of popular songs.

In the early hours on the morning of the June 9th, the lights in the Conservative Party HQ flickered and dimmed, this coincided with a large crack that appeared in the ceiling of the committee meeting room. Theresa May brushed dust out of her greying hair and off her shoulders, as she hurriedly left the building. Had there been an earthquake? After all the background rumblings going on amongst Conservative Ministers it is no wonder the disturbances had loosened the footings in this once great Establishment. Jeremy Corbyn, known now as the come-back Kid, had managed to delivered several heavy blows against the bobbing and weaving of the once powerful Conservatives heavyweights, after he had almost been written off by his own party. If only Theresa May had swung her bag more often at her weak kneed ministers, like Maggie Thatcher had done, we would not now be sitting biting our nails as a hung Parliament threatens Britains stance on Brexit. I think I can hear more rumblings from the European Union HQ, as many MEPs are dancing a jig not on the Conservatives grave, but the outcome of Election. There are several reasons why the PM’s manifesto failed to invigorate her supporters. She had bobbed and weaved this way then that way, one day she would announce a policy, then the following day rescind it, this is not what the voters expected or wanted. Another reason for her failure to capture a larger portion of voters is that she failed to reach out to the younger people of the country, who turned out in larger numbers more than normal, and the views of the anti-Brexiteers. So what is the face saving answer Mrs May find in her HQ’s ruins? The DUP have agreed to throw in their seats to bolster Theresa May’s slim majority in the Commons. This is not the ending she was hoping for. Not a victory by any means not even a draw, or a knock out, a split decision win. She was driven to Buckingham Palace to tell the Queen that she is going to form a new Government, bruised and battered from the punch up, she could easily retire and live a more measured life, but no this Lady was not for turning like the previous female Prime Minister. She has decided one more fight, maybe fighting at another weight slimming down her policies to a more palatable diet for her supporters. Now Jeremy Corbyn has risen like a phoenix from the ashes of his own disruptive Ministers who had talked down Jeremy’s chances in the Election, mainly behind his back and sometimes in public his ministers had derided him, some had betted on him losing heavily, however Jeremy with his Trotsky views and his venom against May’s right of centre Party had catapulted him into the split decision. So let's analyse the outcome, Theresa May will try to tackle Brexit from a diminished position, will she be strong enough to take on the European Union with the slim majority that she has, no doubt the MEP ministers will remind her time and time again about her weakness in Britain, I wish her luck she will need it. This was the day May almost fell in June.

As consequence of NATO adding Libya to its regime changing agenda Europe suffers the worst population displacement, civil disquiet and ethnic cleansing since World War II. Europe’s cities are now frontline war zones. Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, says that if you live in a city terrorism comes with the territory. Since NATO’s reckless overthrow of its elected government Libya has descended into a hell on earth. Before being toppled the tribal-council elected Gaddafi turned Libya into the richest of Africa’s 54 nations. In 2011 he stressed that NATO’S actions would vomit millions of African refugees across the fair face of Europe. He was right; Italy a short sea distance from anarchic Libya, is now the main refugee door into Europe. Déjà vu: Morocco may soon endure its own U.S inspired Arab Spring. Brace! Brace! The placid good life of coastal Spain could soon experience a waterborne invasion from migrants lured by easy-pickings thrown from Brussels banqueting tables. Morocco is closer to Costa coastlines than are Libya to Italy’s. In parts the sea can be crossed in a jolly boat. But, the prospects for residents here are far from jolly. The social and economic fallout from a Moroccan collapse into chaos hardly bears thinking about. According to Russian media, ‘on-going protests in Morocco, now being compared to the ‘Arab Spring’ in
2011, could hit with renewed vigour this summer.’ Salah al Wadia, who leads the ‘Moroccan Movement of Conscience’, says “the anti-government demonstrations are getting out of control and becoming threatening.” The onset of the so-called Arab Spring early in 2011 heralded a domino style collapse of many Middle East and African nations. With its genesis in Tunisia the civil unrest spread like a cancer across Egypt, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Jordan. It upset Alison knowing that her mother seemed indifferent to Alison’s happy life with Graham. “ You’d think she’s be pleased that her daughter was happy and had found someone to take care of her. Why does she always get such pleasure in hurting me?” Graham nicknamed Nellie TOB short for The Old Bat. Nellie had been cruel to Alison telling her the reason why she had her: “I only had a child so that there would be someone to look after me in my old age.” It hurt Alison who had not felt the need to have children of her own. Now she was too old to have children so it was no longer an option for her. Through story-telling devices where Nellie talks through her childhood and adulthood to Alison we glean her colourful past, shrouded in sadness and isolation. There were ten of them living at home. How many people out there can remember the funeral of Winston Churchill? Judging by the number of us in the queue at the health clinic this morning, clutching our plastic jars containing dubious fluids, my guess would be quite a lot. I recall it was a time of genuine national grief and a cause for reflection that without this man, there would have been a very different future in store for all of us. And who could forget the poignant moment when the cranes at the London docks were dipped in salute as the great man passed slowly by. He was an unremarkable and at times, deeply unpopular peace time politician, but a colossus in time of war. He was born for the moment and a man of his time In the Cotswolds recently we put aside a morning to pay our respects to Sir Winston, whose tomb can be found at the peaceful churchyard in the village of Bladon, not far from Blenheim Palace the ancestral home of the Dukes of Marlborough and the Churchill family. It’s a pretty little church, tucked away in a cul-desac some way from the main village road and is the perfect location as a final resting place. But as I sat absorbing the ambience of that peaceful setting, enveloped in the sunshine and bird song, it prompted me to consider - where are the heroes we need today? Who within the ranks of the current political rabble, could step forward to unravel the mess that is stifling our once proud country? We have a leader who at times appears to be completely out of her depth and as recent events illustrated, has a delivery that resembles a third rate actress stumbling over her lines. And the arrogance and stupidity in alienating a large block of elderly core voters immediately prior to a general election defies belief. And what of the alternatives? A man who in the past has embraced terrorists in the belief that they are simply misunderstood and have good reason to kill and maim innocent civilians. Or another who boasted post election that he had increased the number of MP’s for his party by 50%. Impressive, but 50% of eight is only four and that is hardly a Guinness Book of Records event. God help us, because it looks now as if there is no one else who can.

Word order – part 2 Basic Spanish for everyday needs by

As threatened – sorry mentioned – at the end of last week’s article, there are a couple more points to make about word order, before we move on. One is the trick of “inversion” that is switching with word order between subject and verb. This often occurs in the second clause, or section, of a sentence. We have the same phenomenon in English, but in much more restricted circumstances. For example, in a written text we might read: Paul said, “Close the door”. If we turn the sentence round, the usual order would be “Close the door” said Paul. It would be less usual to read “Close the door” Paul said. So you can see that the more usual sentence switches, or inverts, the usual order of subject followed by noun. In Spanish this kind of inversion occurs in a much wider variety of contexts and changes are often to do with which part of the sentence we want to emphasise. Here are just a couple of examples. El jefe llegó a las siete. OR A las siete llegó el jefe. Mis padres siempre iban a la feria OR Siempre iban mis padres a la feria. Now, also on the subject of word order, here’s a question that is especially for those of you who have experienced the joy of teaching English to the Spanish. Why do you think they always say: “I have for breakfast coffee and toast” in answer to the question: “What do you have for breakfast?” I don’t mean, why do they have coffee and toast for breakfast, I mean, why do they always get the word order wrong? Answer at the end of this article. Finally, the sort of thing nobody ever thinks to tell you about word order is to do with proper nouns. “Proper” here doesn’t mean that they know how to hold their knife and fork correctly, it means nouns that represent actual names of things. “Jane” is a proper noun, so is “Spain”, and so is “Atlantic”. The point here is that the word order is often the opposite way round from English. We say “the Atlantic Ocean” the Spanish say “el océano Atlántico” we say “the Red Sea” the Spanish say “el mar Rojo”. However, mountains and rivers are the same “Mount Everest” the Spanish say “el monte Everest”. There’s clearly more to this than meets the eye, but I’ll leave the research to you if you’re really interested. And so finally, why do the Spanish always, and without exception, say “I have for breakfast coffee and toast” instead of “I have coffee and toast for breakfast”? The reason is because they are mentally translating “to have for breakfast” which is the single verb “desayunar”. They’re thinking “desayuno café y tostada” and that’s the order it comes out in English: “I have for breakfast … coffee and toast”. All of which just goes to show how we speak in the order of the words of our language native.

English and Dutch drivers team up to sue VW over ‘dieselgate’ emissions scandal Around 220,000 car drivers in the Netherlands, England and Wales joined forces on Tuesday in what could become a pan-European lawsuit against German carmaker Volkswagen, seeking compensation over its ‘dieselgate’ emissions scandal. UK law firm Harcus Sinclair and Dutch Foundation ‘Stichting Volkswagen Car Claim’, a U.S.-style class action on behalf of an estimated 180,000 Dutch VW car owners, have teamed up in a move that has the potential to spark a wave of coordinated litigation across Europe. VW, Europe's biggest carmaker, has said about 11 million cars worldwide were fitted with software to cheat diesel emissions tests that are designed to limit car fumes blamed for respiratory diseases and global pollution. The company has already agreed to spend up to $25 billion (€22.31 billion) in the United States to address claims from owners, environmental regulators, states and dealers and has offered to buy back approximately 500,000 vehicles. But it has not reached a similar deal in Europe
and faces billions of euros in claims from customers and investors. The carmaker has offered European drivers a software update for all affected vehicles, but lawyers say this does not resolve the problem and they are demanding adequate compensation. The Dutch Foundation, which has been trying to reach a ‘reasonable settlement’ with VW since 2015, told Reuters it was also ‘cooperating’ with partners representing drivers in Austria, Germany, Switzerland and was in talks with others in Spain, France, Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic and Scandinavia. The expanding lawsuit is seeking compensation for damage suffered by VW, Audi, SEAT, Skoda and/ or Porsche car owners, alleging VW and supplier Bosch were responsible for the sale of cars that breached toxic nitrogen oxides emissions rules. ‘To date, the owners of the 8.5 million affected European cars remain in the cold,’ said Harcus Sinclair, which launched its case in January 2016 and has signed up about 41,000 English and Welsh VW drivers. A London trial is expected in early 2019.

CNMV impose month-long short-selling ban on Liberbank The National Securities Market Commission (CNMV), Spain’s stock market regulator imposed a month-long short-selling ban on Liberbank on Monday in an effort to halt the sharp fall in the lender’s share price and what European authorities have described as a potential 'domino effect' that could damage the country's entire banking system. Shares in Liberbank rallied in response, rising 30 per cent in morning trading. The measure comes less than a week after Santander acquired fellow Spanish lender Banco Popular in an overnight auction for €1 after the European Central Bank warned that Spain's No. 6 bank by assets was on the verge of collapse. The acquisition resulted in heavy losses for shareholders and some bond investors. That in turn prompted a steep fall in the share price of Liberbank, a much smaller lender but one that carries a significant amount of non-performing assets and that lags behind its peers in terms of provisions and its coverage ratio. When the CNMV announced the ban, it said it wanted to avoid any loss of confidence in Liberbank and that the regulator was not considering extending the ban to other lenders for now. The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) also issued a detailed statement that backed the move, explaining the urgent circumstances that led to it. The CNMV said it had taken this decision after the recent stock price fall of Liberbank in the aftermath of Popular's rescue. But it sought to draw a distinction between the two banks. One official said that Liberbank's situation was different to Popular, whose finances had been stressed. Banco Popular, which had booked revised losses of €3.6 billion in 2016, was rescued after the ECB said there was a deterioration in its liquidity in the days leading to its rescue. The CNMV said they had not found any evidence of any liquidity problems at Liberbank. Liberbank was formed in 2011 from the merger of three regional savings banks and which controls around two percent of all Spanish deposits. Until its recent share price collapse, it was ranked as the eighth-biggest bank in Spain by market value. Short-selling is the sale of a security that is not owned by the seller, or that the seller has borrowed and motivated by the belief that a security's price will decline, enabling it to be bought back at a lower price to make a profit.
Forbes announces annual celebrity rich list
Forbes announced its Celebrity 100 list earlier this week – the ‘definitive global index of who's making what in the business of entertainment’, the ranking tracks the world's highest-paid entertainers, who cumulatively banked $5.15 billion (€4.6 billion) pretax throughout the June 2016 to June 2017 scoring period. Rapper and entrepreneur Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs landed on top with annual earnings of $130 million (€116 million). Combs’ big payout was thanks to his Bad Boy Family Reunion Tour, earnings from his Sean John clothing line and his partnership with Ciroc vodka. Beyoncé moved into the second spot with $105 million (€93.7 million), courtesy of her best-selling Lemonade album and world tour, while Harry Potter author JK Rowling (who earned $95 million - €84.8 million) moved back into the top three – largely thanks to her Harry Potter spinoff movie franchise Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Rowling’s theme park earnings from The Wizarding World of Harry Potter attractions at Universal Studios have also helped her financial surge. The novelist’s return to the list comes two weeks ahead of the 20th anniversary of her first book in the wizarding series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. She is one of two British entries in the global top 10. Coldplay have secured eighth place with earnings of $88 million (€78.5 million), after failing to make the list in 2016. Singer-songwriter Adele slipped from No 9 to 18th place with annual earnings of $69 million (€61.6 million). Sir Elton John is in joint 26th place with TV chef Gordon Ramsay, both with estimated earnings of $60 million (€53.5 million). Other British celebrities in the top 100 list include musician Sir Paul McCartney at No 32, golfer Rory McIlroy at 37, DJ and producer Calvin Harris at 40, Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton at 46 and TV and music mogul Simon Cowell in 50th place. Forbes ranks talent from across the entire entertainment industry to compile the annual list, and its findings are based on numbers from Nielsen, Pollstar and IMDB, as well as interviews with industry experts and many of the stars themselves.
British inflation jumps again in May
British inflation jumped to its highest level in nearly four years in May, tightening the squeeze on consumers who now face the added worry of political uncertainty after last week's inconclusive election. The impact of the fall in the pound since last year's Brexit vote made itself felt as the higher costs of foreign holidays and of imported computer games and equipment helped push up consumer prices by 2.9 percent year-on-year. That was its biggest annual increase since June 2013, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said, and was above the median forecast of 2.7 percent in a Reuters poll of economists. It is also faster than the growth in pay for most people who have suffered a squeeze on their incomes almost without break for a decade. The ONS said one of the main drivers for inflation in May was the increased cost of package holidays abroad for British tourists who have to pay more for their euros and dollars. Another big push on prices came from computer games and equipment, which are typically imported and therefore reflect the diminished buying power of sterling since the Brexit vote. Credit card firm Visa said on Monday it saw the first annual fall in spending by consumers in nearly four years in May. The Bank of England (BoE) has said it will tolerate inflation above its target of 2 percent because so far there has been no knock-on effect on pay which could generate a longer-lasting inflation problem. But the BoE had previously said it only expected inflation to reach the kind of levels it has now hit at the end of this year.

Iceland summer for the animals
Belluga tickets on sale Tickets for the Cardenal Belluga Theatre Group’s Autumn production, Let Us Entertain You performed at the Cardenal Belluga Theatre in Benijofar on October 18, 19 and 20, are on sale now and selling fast. Doors open from 7.00pm and the show commences at 7.30pm, with all money from ticket sales going to local charities. A family show featuring song, dance and comedy, the tickets are priced at just 7euros each and can be purchased from the tourist office in Urb La Marina,and the council office. They are also available from Cards R Us and from members Pam Sutton on 966 796 828 and Sue on 966 713 822. Summer time officially hits Iceland on Saturday July 1, when the APAH Animal rescue charity’s seasonal fair kicks off in the car park of the Iceland Overseas supermarket in San Javier. This is the second fund raising event organised during the year long collaboration between the supermarket and the APAH charity. APAH Animal Rescue is the Iceland Overseas Supermarket’s chosen charity for 2017 and everyone will be pulling out all the stops on July 1 to make sure the event is enjoyable for all the family. The event takes place between 12.00pm and 3.00pm, with lots of bargains available amongst the stalls on the
car park and a tombola will be held with some great prizes handed out instantly. Raffle tickets for some fabulous prizes will also be available in store during the week prior to the fair, with a prize draw held on the day. For more information on the APAH

Age Concern Summer fair Sunny and warm weather conditions met the bargain hunters heading for the annual Age Concern Costa Blanca Summer fair last Saturday. The event was very well attended with people picking up bargains galore, before heading off to watch a perennial summer tradition in the form of a display of Morris dancing by the Terri Horwath Morris Dancers. The magnificent sum of € 2,865 was raised on the day which led President of Age Concern, Maureen Payne, to extend her huge appreciation for the numerous people who helped at the event. She thanked the many people who donated prizes, made cakes and made particular reference to all of the volunteers and helpers for making the day a huge success.

Cheese and tomato quiche This simple but delicious recipe is easy to follow and tastes fantastic hot or cold. PASTRY INGREDIENTS 200g plain flour 70g unsalted butter 30g lard Pinch of salt 1 piece of baking paper FILLING 300ml whole milk 1 tbsp chopped chives 4 eggs 4 tbsp double cream (optional) 90g grated cheese 3 tomatoes sliced (cherry tomatoes can be used) TIPS • Don’t forget to prick the pastry when blind baking. It helps to stop the pastry rising. • When slicing the tomatoes put on kitchen towel to absorb some of the moisture before putting on top of the quiche • Put the rolling pin in the freezer before using, the colder the better METHOD: Heat the oven on gas mark 5 or around 200. To make the pastry use a large mixing bowl and add the flour and salt. Rub in the butter and lard gently until it starts
to form a breadcrumb mixture. Add some cold water, a bit at a time until the dough all starts coming together and the dough is clean off the sides of the mixing bowl. If you think you have used a little too much water add a little bit more flour. This short crust pastry is quite forgiving for first timers. Once all formed into a nice dough, cover with cling film and put in the fridge for
15-30 mins. While the pastry is in the fridge, start on the filling. In a mixing bowl add the milk, eggs, double cream (if using), cheese and chives and mix together. Add a little salt and pepper if you wish and set aside. Sprinkle flour on your work surface and the rolling pin, roll out the pastry so its just over lapping your Quiche dish. This gives you
enough pastry to push against the sides. About the thickness of a euro coin. Prick the pastry and place the baking paper on the top of the pastry and put the dried beans on top of the paper to hold the pastry down. I use hard dried Spanish ones out of a jar, inexpensive and reusable. Trim the edges off and put in the oven for about 10-12 mins. You just want it to start getting firm, not cooked as it will be going back in the oven with the mixture. Remove the beans and paper, give your filling another mix and pour onto the pastry casing. Carefully take your slices of tomatoes off the kitchen towel and place around your quiche. Add another bit of grated cheese and carefully put in the oven for about 15-20 mins. Your quiche will start rising in the last 10 mins of cooking and should be firm to touch in the middle and golden brown. If you are not sure, cook for a further 1-2 mins. This recipe is very easy and once you have done the pastry you can use it for pies and different quiches using different fillings. Be experimental, you can´t go wrong! One of the Pubs favorites is cheese and broccoli. ENJOY!

Best ever Bloody Mary A Bloody Mary is a great to drink to have no matter what the weather. This one is 'The' ultimate recipe, the only one you'll ever need. Classic, but with enough extras to keep it interesting. Whether you spike it with vodka or keep it virgin, the burst of sunny vitamins from the tomato juice and kick of spice will get you into gear in no time. Plus, it’s a great way to use up any leftover port or sherry still kicking around after Easter and perhaps, even Christmas. This version of the classic cocktail combines vodka, tomato juice, Worcestershire sauce, port and sherry with a few dashes of Tabasco to turn up the heat. Garnish with a celery stick and some tomatoes and olives to serve.
INGREDIENTS • vodka 50ml, (make sure it's a good quality one …... Stoly darling?) • tomato juice 200ml • basil a handful • port 5ml • dry sherry 5 ml • Worcestershire sauce 5 dashes • Tabasco 5 dashes • creamed horseradish 1tsp • celery sticks, • baby plum tomatoes, olives to serve • lemon a squeeze of juice, plus a wedge to serve METHOD • Put all of the ingredients, plus a pinch of salt and pepper, into one half of a cocktail shaker, and, rather than shaking, slowly pour into the other half of the shaker, then back again. Repeat this a few times. • This will ensure that everything is well mixed. Strain into a tall glass filled with ice and garnish with a celery stick, lemon wedge, tomatoes and olives to serve.

Driving around recently, it’s hard to not pass a runner, or jogger pounding the pavement, beachfront or walking trail. Whether they are in full technical kit and expensive running shoes, with their phone recording every stride, or jogging along in a baggy old T-shirt and beach shorts, you can see them at all times of the Spanish day and night. Running is cheap, easy and reduces the risk of heart disease and early deaths, but do the health benefits outweigh those from other activities, such as walking, cycling or swimming? Well, the answer is yes, because, according to a review of evidence in the journal Progress in Cardiovascular Disease, runners live three years longer than non-runners. You don’t even have to run fast, or for long, to see a benefit and you can drink, smoke, be overweight and still reduce your risk of dying early by running, by between 25% and 40%. The authors of the review say that no other exercise has such an impact, an hour of running will, statistically speaking, increase your life expectancy by seven hours. While running regularly can’t make you immortal, the review says it is more effective at prolonging life than walking, cycling or swimming. Two of the authors of the review were also involved in a study published in 2014 that found a mere five to 10 minutes a day of running, at less than six miles an hour, reduced the risk of heart disease and early deaths from all causes. Running is cheap, you can’t fake it, putting one foot in front of the other is easy and it’s always energetic. Even a jog counts as moderately vigorous exercise and even if you are time poor, you need run for only half the time to get the same benefits as other sports. Angelique Brellenthin, of the department of kinesiology at Iowa State University, one of the review’s authors, says it takes 105 minutes of walking to yield the same benefits as a 25-minute run. There are tragic but rare deaths during races, but non-runners are twice as likely to die from sudden heart attacks and strokes as runners. Brellenthin says that runners have higher levels of aerobic fitness, lower levels of body fat and smaller waists than those who do other activities. Running may be particularly good at shifting abdominal fat too and unless you have a badly positioned kneecap, won’t be too hard on your knees. You only need to do 30 to 60 minutes a week to reap the benefits, so perhaps we should all search for the old running shoes, pick up a bottle of water and hit the road Jack!

How to court the ‘courtyard’ look Very often apartment living in Spain means having to make do with a poky terrace, with just enough room for a couple of chairs and a geranium, but generally, at least there may be something of a view, even if it is of the neighbor on the balcony opposite. So, just how do you turn an unloved ground floor space into an elegant cared for courtyard? The term 'courtyard garden' conjures up visions of stately containers, architectural balance and cool, shady corners. Maybe your courtyard isn't there yet? Well, here is a sure-fire way to turn your outdoor space into a special place you'll enjoy and want to spend time in. Here a few golden rules to help you get the perfect courtyard look: 1. The first rule with small spaces is - don't add too much. Filling up a courtyard with pots and containers will make it look like a storage room. So think about using what you put in there to create structure for the whole space, just like you would in a room inside the house. 2. Don't let the boundaries overwhelm the view. If the fences or walls are all completely different, the enclosed space won't feel like a room. So work on getting all the boundaries, at least if not the same, working together. 3. Only put screening where it's absolutely necessary. Courtyards can be overlooked by neighbours' windows and it's tempting to put up trellis or plants to block them off. But you'll also be cutting out light so use screening carefully. 4. Always put in comfortable seats. Unless you really like sitting on benches, try something a bit easier on the rear. Outdoor sofas or rattan easy chairs look good and feel good. 5. Track the sun to make sure it reaches your sitting area, or opt for

shade, if you'd rather stay cool. 6. Hide the meeting place between the walls and floor as much as possible. It's one of the reasons courtyard gardens often look unwelcoming, seeing this join of the wall or fence and paving looks clinical and yard-like, so put something like containers around the edges to soften the area. 7. Because there's likely to be no grass in the area be really careful
about how you lay your paving, especially with the grouting that's used. In a small space the lines formed by grouting can become the most dominant feature in the courtyard. A good general rule for grouting is to go one shade lighter than the stone slabs, and recess it slightly. Now you have the ‘look’, but what about the perfect plants for your new outdoor space. Try these tips: 1. Plants in containers can be used to establish the usable space within the courtyard. One way to do this is to keep them to the edges and group larger plants in the corners. 2. Courtyards are often shady: big-leaved, glossy, green plants will love these conditions (as long as they get enough water). Try Japanese aralia (Fatsia japonica), bear's breeches, (Acanthus mollis), and hostas. 3. Every plant needs to earn its keep in a small space, and evergreens are going to give a lot more payback than deciduous plants. Box and yew can be cut into shapes which will give year round structure. 4. As well as being shady, courtyards can also be sheltered, so it might be worth taking advantage of this by trying to grow some exotics which wouldn't survive in more open areas. Have a go with tree ferns, bananas, pittosporum and cordylines. 5. Because the boundaries are so important in courtyards, climbers will play a big part in the planting scheme. For a tender but wonderful evergreen with scented flowers in the summer try star jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides).

How to: get the Pride rainbow flag reaction on Facebook Facebook has added a new rainbow flag reaction to its social network for a limited time so users can celebrate Pride month. The flag, which has been a symbol of the LGBT community since 1978, joins the thumbs up and heart signs as well as excited, shocked, sad and angry emoji as a way to react on Facebook. But Facebook’s addition isn’t immediately available to all users - the rainbow flag reaction will only appear as an option for users if they like Facebook’s LGBTQ page. Microsoft debuts Xbox One X Ahead of the E3 games show in Los Angeles, Microsoft recently unveiled the latest games console in its line-up - a more powerful version of the Xbox One called the Xbox One X. To be released on 7 November, the Xbox One X will cost £449 (€509) in the UK. The system, which runs games at 4K ultraHD and 60 frames-per-second (fps), was labelled ‘the most powerful console ever made’ by Phil Spencer, head of Xbox. It is also the smallest Xbox yet. It joins the Xbox One S - a slimmer version of the Xbox One that supports 4K video streaming - in the roster of consoles that make up Microsoft’s latest console generation. Sony, too, has a console with 4K capabilities - the PS4 Pro - which it released in November last year.
However, the PS4 Pro’s specifications -
including memory and processor speed - are lower than those of the Xbox One X.
It boasts 12 gigabytes of RAM to the PS4
Pro’s 8 gigabytes, for example and 6 teraflops of graphics processing power compared to 4.12.
Plus, unlike Sony’s machine, Microsoft’s is
able to play 4K ultra-HD Blu-ray discs.
However, while the Xbox One X is capable
of supporting virtual reality gaming, there was almost no mention of this during the presentation and no demonstrations of games that use VR headsets.
The console will also be immediately
compatible with all existing Xbox One games. It will ‘scale up’ games not made at 4K resolution to enhance their visuals.

Google introduced an app called Trips last year to help people organise their travel plans and figure out what to do once they arrive at their destination. The app will organise your plane tickets and hotel reservations, offer editorial guides to more than 200 cities and make personalised recommendations based on your Google history. Best of all, Trips works offline: you can download everything to your phone before you leave, including maps and walking directions — sparing you from having to use an expensive international data plan. Trips requires you to log in with your Google account. Once you’ve signed in, you will be presented with a
list of your upcoming and previously completed trips. Tap into a future trip and you’ll find a colourful grid of options to explore. Reservations organises your flights, hotel information, and any rental car reservations you may have made. “Need to Know” has useful information about getting from the airport to the centre of the city, the local currency and what to do in case of an emergency. The heart of the app is Things to Do, which builds custom itineraries based on how long you’ll be in town, popular destinations and anything that you’ve previously starred or saved on a Google service. If you’ve got your cellular connection active, Trips will pull in real-time information about which destinations are open or closed. It will also make adjustments based on time of day and weather — if it starts raining, for example, the app will recommend indoor activities. And if you want an I’m Feeling Lucky-style recommendation for your day, tap the big red ‘magic wand’ button and Google will offer you a random highlight from the city.

Online car part ordering outstrips cosmetics The UK’s car servicing and repair sector grew again in 2016, with turnover rising 2.4% to £21.6 billion, according to figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Growth was primarily driven by sustained record numbers of new car registrations, and greater reliability, leading to more vehicles remaining on British roads for longer but still requiring regular servicing and maintenance. The increasing level of advanced technology in modern vehicles was also a major influencing factor. New research, commissioned by SMMT from independent consultancy Frost & Sullivan, shows that in 2016, UK motorists increased their annual spending on car maintenance by 1.7% to an average of £707. This was due, in part, to the replacement of more high tech components, which require new skills and equipment to fit. While tyres, lubricants and filters are still the most commonly replaced items, the research shows that demand is rising fastest for telematics devices and tyre pressure monitoring sensors.2 The performance figures highlight the sector’s significant contribution to the UK economy. In 2016, the UK automotive aftermarket, which includes parts makers, distributors, retailers and workshops, grew its contribution to the economy by 2.5% to £12.5 billion and created 1,400 new jobs. The total number of livelihoods supported by the sector now stands at some 347,000 – more than the population of Coventry. The increasing digitalisation of cars and components presents challenges and opportunities to the sector as it strives to keep pace with advanced vehicle technology, data driven servicing and the changing needs of motorists. The research shows that British motorists are also leading the way in online car main-
tenance, with one of the fastest adoption rates in Europe. Last year, UK consumers bought a higher percentage of automotive parts, accessories and services online than they did cosmetics and groceries. Together they spent some £920 million on items such as tyres, brakes and batteries, and by 2022 this is forecast to rise by more than three quarters to £1.65 billion. There is also consumer appetite for connected services such as vehicle health reports, fault detection and recall alerts, all of which make it easier to maintain cars. The research identifies growing interest in emerging forms of mobility such as car sharing schemes, forecast to attract some 2.3 million members worldwide by 2025, and e-hailing. Consumers are also increasingly turning to other digital services for their maintenance needs and online comparison websites, common in the insurance and finance sectors, are now entering the aftermarket. An estimated 100,000 people in the UK are currently using these sites to compare workshop offerings and prices, and this is set to grow significantly. This all makes clear the need for after-

Dude …. Where’s my Ferrari A millionaire rogue landlord has had his £200,000 Ferrari seized and CRUSHED by police. Businessman Zahid Khan, 30, said his supercar was confiscated by West Midlands Police after he was stopped by officers on April 5. He infamously parked the Ferrari 458 Spider on the pavement outside Birmingham Crown Court at a conviction appeal the month before. The supercar obsessed trainee pilot contacted says he turned up at court to discover his beloved car had been destroyed. Wealthy landlord Khan, who runs a garage said “I have been trying to get my car back from the police. “I turned up at Birmingham Crown Court this morning and was really angry to hear it had been destroyed. I can’t believe it. “My legal team told the police that we would go to the High Court to get the car back.” Khan said his vehicle was confiscated on April 5 and claimed he was told he was being stopped because police suspected the car was stolen. He said he was arrested and handcuffed at the scene and his car seized. He told the Birmingham Mail he had bought the cherished car from a large auction company, via a middleman, last year and spent “a lot of time and money’’ on the vehicle. He said: “I ordered parts from Ferrari and had them fitted by a Ferrari approved garage in Birmingham. “The police told me they did not believe that the car was mine and that I had to prove ownership. “I have been trying to get my car back ever since, trying to prove that it did not include stolen parts and that I was the owner. “Then we go to Birmingham Crown Court this morning
and find that the car has been destroyed. “But I did not know anything about that and I can’t believe they have destroyed my car.” West Midlands Police confirmed to the Birmingham Mail that officers had stopped Khan on April 5. It also confirmed that the force had applied to a judge at Birmingham Crown Court for an amendment to an existing asset restraining order which resulted in the Ferrari no longer being a restrained asset. A spokeswoman said the car was crushed last week because it had no valid insurance and was a Category B vehicle - which are officially classed as unroadworthy, meaning the shell has to be destroyed. After learning his car’s fate, Khan expressed his anger. He said: “I love supercars and have owned a number of them and loved this car. “I bought it to do it up as a hobby and when I finished it was worth over £200,000.” The businessman was exposed as a rogue landlord in December after forcing tenants out of his luxury Birmingham home. He was ordered to carry out 150 hours of community service after forcing out six professionals who had rented his sprawling property in Moseley. He later appealed the conviction, turning up to court in the white Ferrari 458 Spider, which he claims is worth more than £200,000. He parked the eye-catching vehicle on the pavement outside Birmingham Crown Court during the appeal hearing. That hearing upheld three of the charges - interfering with the peace and comfort of tenants, failing to provide adequate smoke alarms, and failing to obtain an HMO licence for the
property. But the court dismissed the other three - failing to ensure the property was kept in good and clean decorative repair, failure to ensure the internal structure of the property was maintained in good repair, and failure to ensure that any fixtures, fittings or appliances were maintained in good repair. Following the appeal, Khan was ordered to pay an extra £2,000 on top of the previous £5,700 he was told to pay.

Advertising does sell new cars
The annual New Car Code of Practice survey conducted by The Motor Ombudsman, the automotive dispute resolution provider, has found that around a quarter (24%) of consumers are swayed in their choice of new car as a result of seeing an advert online, on TV or in print. The annual study looks at the buying experience and satisfaction of motorists who have visited a franchise dealer belonging to any of the 38 vehicle manufacturers that are accredited to The Motor Ombudsman’s Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI)-approved New Car Code of Practice. Its comprehensive Motor Industry Code covers over 99% of all new car purchases in the UK. The research, which polled nearly 2,400 people, showed that male buyers and 17 to 25 year olds are more inclined to take the plunge after seeing a commercial; whilst those approaching their thirties and motorists aged 40 to 55 are less likely to act on impulse. Overall, the research found that 93% of cars that the survey participants bought matched the content of the advert, whilst respondents scored an encouraging average of 4.8 out of a maximum 5.0 for their satisfaction with their vehicle, with the over 65s proving amongst the happiest with their car. Customers also gave manufacturers a total tally of 4.7 where further assistance was needed. When asked specifically about their purchase, the condition of the vehicle in which they received it, ranked highest in the study at 4.8, with the assistance and knowledge of sales staff considered impressive by motorists at 4.7 overall, which mirrored last year’s findings. The explanation of terms and conditions of the warranty achieved the lowest score of 4.5, which also echoed the result seen in the 2015 survey. Bill Fennell, Chief Ombudsman and Managing Director of The Motor Ombudsman, said: “In today’s digital era, consumers are never too far away from a brand encouraging them to buy a product. Although the lure of advertising can prove a powerful influencer when choosing a car, it is important for motorists to check, for added peace of mind, that the retailer is accredited to a recognised CTSI-approved Code of Practice, such as that offered by The Motor Ombudsman. The study clearly shows the value of franchise dealers and vehicle manufacturers adhering to a Code, as scores have once again remained consistently high across the board, which is undoubtedly a very positive trend for consumers and the industry.”

Road Test - Citroen C4 Picasso
I can’t think of any cars that are officially named after notable people other than the manufacturers themselves. That is until I find myself driving the Citroen C4 Picasso. It’s quite a compliment to the world famous artist and I’d never given it an ounce of thought until now. The difficulty with such a decision is that it must live up to the high and exacting standards of its namesake. It all falls apart if it doesn’t. Picasso’s name first appeared on the Xsara back in 1999. Picasso, the Spanish born painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, stage designer, poet and playwright spent most of his adult life in France so it is a great gesture to name a vehicle after him. Incidentally, his most expensive painting entitled Nude, Green Leaves and Bust, created in the span of just a single day in 1932, sold for more than £85m. I wonder why Spanish car company Seat didn’t beat Citroen to it and name one of their vehicles after the great man. Naming this people mover after the famous painter is arguably apt because twice married he had four children so this sizeable vehicle would have been much appreciated by him, I reckon. It is also well designed, pleasing to look at from the side especially with its alloy wheels and it boasts quite a striking front so the design aspect should also have received his thumbs up. With its large boot that easily swallows a pushchair and travel cot as well as food shopping there is enough space on the floor at the rear for any additional luggage. And there always is when the Saunders family go on a jaunt. Three child seats are easily accommodated in the back and Harriett (5) and Heidi (6) do like the folding picnic tables complete with night time reading light. They also have controls for their own air vents. The large boot lid itself opens and shuts unaided; simply click the proximity key. Driver and front passenger are happy because their seats
not only have folding armrests they also come with a massage facility. The one thing I find difficult to come to terms with though is the lack of a speedometer in front of the steering wheel meaning that the driver has to glance at the centre console to see the speedometer. With so many speed cameras around these days I find myself frequently doing this. With its responsive diesel unit and six speed manual gearbox that on occasions is given to notchy indecisive gear changes, it will quickly reach speed limits so it is just as well it is fitted with a speed limiter and cruise control. Engine start/stop kicks in at the traffic lights helping with fuel economy. There are mixed feelings about the sat nav because on one journey I find that I can actually rely on it to get me out of the depths of the Dorset countryside without a hitch. But on another occasion it is of absolutely no use whatsoever when in the New Forest. Surely it allows for a postcode to be inputted but try as I might I cannot make it work. Thankfully we have a map. The C4 has an electric handbrake and as we are stuck in a traffic jam on a hill of all places, on one of Dorset’s main roads, I am surprised and reassured to see that when the handbrake is released the vehicle still holds itself in place with no rolling whatsoever so that I can select first gear and move off without breaking into a sweat. With a ride height taller than even some 4x4s the C4 is a capable motorway cruiser and overtaker.
Nearing the end of my test I suddenly recall another vehicle that celebrated a notable individual and that was the Churchill tank from the Second World War. Citroen has really hit on a great idea here and more manufacturers should follow suit with this excellent form of commemoration, in my opinion. I can see it now: the Jaguar Thatcher, the Range Rover Bowie or the Rolls Royce Nelson.

Vistabella June
The lovely, soon to be extended, Vistabella course, was the destination for the San Miguel Golf Society's first June meeting. Early cloud cover and even a slight chill in the morning wind greeted the 30 ageing members and 4 guests who attended the day and are particularly well versed in the latter. As often happens, the stiff breeze soon shifted the clouds giving the sun a chance to warm everything up and by 11.00am normal June service was resumed weather wise. However, Vistabella's tight and tricky layout never allows the game of golf to run as smoothly as everyone would like. ‘Mister Consistency’, also known as Noel Bannon, was the one and only player who managed to beat par. The results were: Nearest the pins – Mike Maskell (4). Tony Smale (8) and Ken Frew (14). Best Guest – Mike Maskell who very nearly cracked the magic “30 points”. BRONZE - 4th Chris Hamblett (30 c/b). 3rd Keith Wraithmell (30 c/b). 2nd Keith Stevenson (33). 1st Kyree Skarsmoen (35). Members of the San Miguel Golf Society thanked all the team at Vistabella for their help in making the day a success. Busta Bella Golf Day Twenty-four members set off to Vistabella for the Busters Golf Society June day out, where they found a course in very good condition. A slight breeze made for perfect weather conditions, however none of the players managed to break par as the course was playing long and many of the pins were placed in difficult positions, so the best scores were two people on 34 points. The results for the day were: N T P on hole four Joe Sheehan, hole eight Chris Waddington and the fifteenth was won by Tim Goldsmith. Tim also won our B F Nine with fourteen points and the B B nine was won by John Rush with eighteen points, the third place being taken by Derek Ailes who scored thirty three points, second place was taken by Martin Collins with thirty four points who lost on count back to our winner Nikki Ead who also had thirty four points. As none of the players had a two, the two´s pot has been carried over for the July Game at Roda. The soccer card which their social fund benefits from was won by Nikki Ead. Busters Golf Society is a small friendly group of like-minded people who play on the first Friday of the month, depending on the time of the year with generally between sixteen and twenty four players . During the five years since we first formed the society some of the original members have moved on, either returned to their country of origin or have ventured to pastures new. Therefore, they are looking for a few more members to swell the ranks, so anyone interested in joining the society, which has a free membership, please email, Barry Grinsell at bustersgolfsociety@hotmail.com quoting your phone number and current handicap and he will get back to you within a couple of days.
Youth Football at Los Montesinos
The biggest youth football tournament in the Vega Baja area takes place this weekend at the sports stadium in Los Montesinos. Hundreds of youth sides from across the province are due to take part in the Torneo de Futbol 8, Villa de Los Montesinos, which is now in its seventeenth year. The four day mixed tournament begins on Thursday June 15 and runs through until Sunday June 18 and has a strong message ‘No a la Droga’, say no to drugs message. Categories represented at the tournament are: Prebenjamin 2009 y 2010, Benjamin, Alevin, Infantil, Cadete, Juvenil, Femenino, and Sub 23. Thursday and Friday matches start at 6.00pm, whereas the Saturday and Sunday games will be played all day from 9.00am. Food and drink will be available throughout the event, using a voucher system for drinks at the bar and food from the BBQ, situated where the matchday marquee is normally placed.
