Summer officially begins on the coastline of the Cartagena area, with the arrival of the chiringuitos
Summer can now officially begin, as following weeks of uncertainty, beach bar and chiringuito operators on the Cartagena coastline got the green light to open for business this weekend. For many of us, a day at the beach is not complete without an hour or two under the shade of a cool chiringuito, sipping a chilled drink or maybe indulging in a spot of lunch. However, almost two months into the summer season, visitors to the beautiful beaches of the Cartagena region, stretching from the Mediterranean coast of La Manga to the west coast of Isla Plana and La Azohía and including the coast of the Mar Menor have been unable to enjoy a drink on the beach. The delay in bringing this process to a successful conclusion has caused a stir in the Association of Chiringuitos de Cartagena (Achica) and was due to a change in practice in issuing licenses to operators, followed by an administration error between Cartagena City council and the Murcia regional government. Only an appeal by Achica, brought a swift conclusion to the delays and allowed the go ahead, which was received earlier this week. There are forty eight planned sites for chiringuitos and beach bars of various sizes, with some where beachgoers can enjoy taking an aperitif, eating, listening to music, and In some cases watch live concerts and DJ’s. Almost all of them will open within the next ten or fifteen days, with some of the more simple ones able to set themselves up in time for this weekend, with at least a rudimentary service, such as the ones in Isla Plana and La Azohía. Others need more time to install water, electricity and other supplies for their kitchens, bathrooms and sound equipment, amongst other accessories. Until 2016, concessions were assessed seasonally and renewed annually, however this year’s new procedure grants licenses for four years. The cost of each concession varies greatly depending on the turnover of each business and the particular beach location. Monthly rentals go from 400 euros for a bar kiosk with stools, in Los Nietos, to more than 4,000 in another with tables and chairs, pergola and platform, hammocks and umbrellas, toilet, storage and walkways such as the large one on the beach of Cabo de Palos. Last week, the city council also passed licenses for 16 sun terraces and facilities, 11 boat rental and nautical businesses and four water parks with floating platforms.

Alicante-Elche airport gearing up for summer avalanche

Maritime crackdown on the Mar Menor The Maritime Captaincy will increase its controls and surveillance in the coming weeks as it cracks down on illegally anchored boats and water sport companies operating without licences on the Mar Menor.

by Andy Mansell With 11.5 million passengers expected to transit through Alicante-Elche Airport between now and the end of October, operators AENA have taken steps to strengthen security and increase personnel in preparation for the season. The reinforcement programme aims to reduce waiting times at busy periods, whilst maintaining increased levels of security and giving a high level of customer service. Security services will be reinforced,
mainly in filters and coordinated with the State Security Forces, providing additional resources for both security controls and passport controls. The millions of summer travellers will fly to and from 115 airports throughout Europe and north Africa, with the growth in passengers expected to top 16% more than in 2016. Aena’s forecast for year-end figures is currently ahead of the target, with the compamy confident of reaching 13 million passengers in 2017. The company have taken on extra seasonal employees in all depart-
ments, including management and airport operations, computer system operations, electromechanical systems (luggage processing, walkways, ribbons, elevators, etc.) and cleaning services. In addition commercial and catering staff will be reinforced in a timely manner in line with the expected increase in demand. Meetings have been coordinated with airlines and tour operators to streamline operations at check in desks and with local police to help with congestion at airport pick up areas.
The first steps are already being taken as agents are ordering the owners of the boats anchored illegally to remove them. Agents will place a sticker on the hull of the boat as a warning and will continue to do so as the number of illegally anchored boats increase across the high summer season. According to sources, up to 3,000 illegal moorings can be found throughout the summer. Local water sport companies will be inspected – the Maritime Captain recognises that all those companies based on the beaches of the Region of Murcia have their licenses in order, however there are some companies, based out of offices in the local towns, who might be unaware of the licenses required. Inspections will be continuous throughout the high summer season. In addition to monitoring the moorings, agents will check that boats meet seaworthiness standard and have all necessary paperwork in order.

Opposition calls for Torrevieja to clean up its act The Popular Party released a statement on Saturday detailing how they have submitted a motion to the plenary calling for an ‘urgent plan of integral shock, because of the lamentable state of cleanliness in Torrevieja.’ In the statement, they deem the current levels of cleanliness throughout the municipality to be ‘unacceptable’ and stress that they must be improved before the start of the high summer season. The Popular Party have called for similar action on several occasions throughout the last two years but without success. They say that the municipality is paying €13 million a year to a company which is still without a contract, to provide a service about which the Ayuntamiento receives complaints on a daily basis.
Environmental agent increase The President of the Region of Murcia, Fernando Lopez Miras, announced on Tuesday - during his visit to the Centro de Coordinacion Forestal in El Valle - that five of the eight newly employed environmental agents will cover the Mar Menor.
Orihuela Plaza de Toros rides again by Andy Mansell Orihuela’s crumbling bull ring will be converted into a multipurpose space for leisure activities and shows with a capacity for 2,800 people. Earlier this week Orihuela municipal council rubber stamped plans for the redevelopment of the derelict Plaza de Toros in the town. The ambitious project , costing in the region of 405,000 euros, will create a multipurpose cultural and entertainment venue, capable of seating up to 2800 people in comfort. Launching the bids for tender, Mayor Emilio Bascanuna explained that as the work is considered to be a work of public interest, IVA will only be levied at 10% instead of the expected 21%. He told the Spanish press that the tender process should take approximately three months and once the construction company is chosen work will commence forthwith. tion in height from 5.8 metres to 3.8 metres, whilst keeping some of the more distinctive elements of the façade. Much of the interior will be remodeled with only the first ring of original stairs in the plaza remaining, as the other two circles of stairs were considered to be too damaged. The new tiers will have seating capacity for 1,600 people, whilst when necessary, an extra 1200 chairs can be installed in the space that was previ-
ously destined for the arena. The finished 2800 seater development will also include green areas around the exterior, a cafeteria service, public toilets and a small museum that will house memorabilia and commemorate the history of bullfighting in the area. The project, which sits on a site with a perimeter of 7,500 square meters, is expected to be complete by spring of 2018.
A different species of visitor to the Torrevieja coastline
Since the end of May, the coast of Torrevieja has seen a high concentration of giant manta rays (Mobula Mobular) in large groups just 6 nautical miles from shore. The Mobula Mobular grows to a maximum recorded length of 5.2 metres, making it one of the largest rays on earth. They are most common in the Mediterranean Sea and can be found elsewhere in the Eastern Atlantic Ocean, off the southwest coast of Ireland and south of Portugal and possibly in the northwest Atlantic. Mobula Mobulars and other large rays are common along the coast, though not usually seen quite so close to the shore. They are also typically observed in small clusters and only occasionally form larger groups Despite their size, Mobula Mobulars are totally harmless and feed only on plankton. The municipal biologist has advised that as the rays ‘swim slowly near the surface of the water’ and people should be careful not to harm them by boat, especially given they have been classified as endangered since 2006.

Man who stabbed partner eight times sent straight to prison
Canara Cehegin, the sleepy hamlet where the attack took place
by Tahnee Wright A 35-year-old Bulgarian man was arrested last Thursday and sent straight to prison for stabbing his partner eight times on the terrace of a bar in Canara Cehegin. The incident occurred at around 2.00pm last Thursday as the couple ate in Bar Jupiter. The victim, also Bulgarian and 32-years-old, was ‘saved from death’ after the owner of the bar intervened. The couple began to argue loudly and eyewitnesses told the Spanish press that the man called the woman a ‘whore’. The man then stood up and stabbed the woman eight times in the shoulder area with the same knife he had been eating with. He then picked up a chair and smashed it across the woman’s head until it broke, continuing to beat her with a single leg of the chair. The woman managed to escape the wrath of the man and crawled inside the bar for help. The owner of the bar ushered the woman inside and guarded the entrance with a broom
and a chair as the man came after her. The emergency services were called and an ambulance arrived at the scene along with the Guardia Civil and the Policia Local. The victim was taken to the regional hospital in Caravaca de la Cruz, where doctors extracted the blade of the knife from her shoulder area. She was then transferred to the hospital Virgen de la Arrixaca in Murcia where she was admitted to the intensive care unit. Witnesses told the Spanish press that the man had tried to escape the scene, but they held him there until officers arrived. The man was arrested at the scene and faced the Court of Instruction number 1 of Caravaca de la Cruz last Friday morning, charged with attempted murder. This case comes as the second of gender violence in the region of Murcia in less than a week after a 31-year-old female was stabbed to death by her 48-year-old male colleague before he committed suicide at the centre they both worked at in Molina de Segura supporting people with autism.
Cyclist hit by car in Navarra dies A 45-year-old cyclist from Villatuerta died after being hit by a car in Navarra. The 81-year-old driver of the car was charged with reckless driving. The incident took place on the roundabout that links calles San Francisco Javier, La Merindad and Arieta, near the municipal sports hall of Estella Lizarrerria. The cyclist, who was already on the roundabout, was thrown off his bike by the car and died after hitting his head on the curb, despite wearing a helmet.

False whatsapp message spreads panic in Spain by Andy Mansell Valencian regional police authorities have acted quickly to quell a situation of panic resulting from a false allegation written in Spanish on whatsapp. The message, which went viral, without warning last Wednesday afternoon falsely claims that an imminent terrorist attack will happen in the Spanish cities of Madrid, Valencia, Alicante and Barcelona. The Bulo post on whatsapp states that the National Police Force is mobilising to an increased level 5, maximum alert. It also falsely claims that the chosen place is in the vicinity of the North Station, which "is full of national police." Before continuing with the allegations that: "They have cancelled all vacations and 5 more groups of UIP (Police Intervention Unit) have gone to madrid and there is a Geo team at the airport, so if you have to travel always be alert." “The renfe is full of National Police and the police stations, everything is revolutionised, an imminent warning

Dozens of Greenpeace supporters gathered at the gates of the Embassy of the United States of America in Madrid last Friday to protest U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to pull the U.S. out of the Paris climate agreement. Protesters accused Trump of becoming a ‘global threat’ and ‘harming the planet’ in signs they held Friday morning at the entrance of the embassy in central Madrid. Greenpeace's director in Spain Mario Rodriguez said last Thursday's announcement will require U.S. civil society and companies — as well as the rest of the world — to work harder to fight global warming. ‘The battle against climate change is irreversible,’ Rodriguez said. ‘Resistance will be maintained because the United States is much more than just the White House and Trump.’ Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, where the landmark global climate agreement was agreed in December 2015, said the decision by Donald Trump to pull the U.S. out of the deal was ‘a mistake that would have dramatic consequences.’ ‘That incredible diplomatic achievement could not have been secured without the decisive role of the United States of America. That is why President Trump is committing a mistake with dramatic and fatal consequences,’ she said. ‘Regardless of President Trump’s decision, the great cities of the world, in particular the twelve American C40 cities, remain resolutely committed to doing what needs to be done to implement the Paris agreement,’ she said, referring to 91 global cities that are have vowed to fight global warming.

Lizard survives Spain – UK flight hiding inside broccoli Staff at an Asda store in Lanarkshire were shocked when they opened a vegetable delivery recently. Upon opening the crate – from Spain – colleagues found an Iberian wall lizard hiding inside the broccoli. The lizard, who has now been named Brock, was alive and well although severely dehydrated. Brock was retrieved from the store by animal welfare officers who are now nursing him back to health. Fiona Henderson, from the Scottish SPCA, told the English press: ‘The poor wee guy was dehydrated but otherwise unharmed from his adventures.’ ‘As he’s not a native reptile. Brock couldn’t be rehomed like our normal rescues. In this case, he’s gone to live in a multi-habitat vivarium at the Scottish Exotic Animal Rescue centre with reptile expert Nick Martin.’ ‘The vivarium is designed to mimic Brock’s habitat as closely as possible and it seems he’s settled in perfectly well despite his broccoli ordeal.’

Pandemonium at Spain’s ports Spain’s more than 6,000 stevedores went on strike on Monday to protest against potential job losses in the wake of the ports reform, which was demanded by the European Union and passed through parliament in mid-May Paralysing the country’s 39 cargo ports, workers have called for additional off-hour work stoppages on June 19, 21 and 23, plus a full 48-hour strike from June 14 to the morning of June 16. Workers are also performing scheduled stoppages on Friday, June 9, threatening the country’s main export sectors like industrial machinery and cars. The government said minimum services were being upheld at ports to ensure perishable goods such as fruit and vegetables were getting through and passenger services were not disrupted. Some container shipping companies have rerouted cargo due to the strikes. Alternative destinations for shipping companies include Portugal, Morocco and Malta. The ports reform, which aims to crack down on closed-shop hiring in a heavily unionised sector as demanded by the European Union, was passed through parliament in mid-May after a series of setbacks and clashes between political parties. Workers broke off subsequent talks with port representatives over how to implement the new law in a disagreement over safeguarding more than 6,000 jobs.

Spanish medics receive training to face jihadist attack by Andy Mansell Spanish Army nursing specialists have spent the last week in Alicante, training medical emergency experts in how to act when faced with a jihadist terror attack. In the wake of the horrors of the Bataclan attack in Paris, or the recent London and Manchester terror incidents, European citizens are having to come to terms with the fact we are surrounded by a permanent terror threat. These new scenarios also affect the work of doctors and nurses who attend the emergency situations, as they need to be prepared to face personal attack themselves. With this in mind, Military Medical Personnel, visited the Cigarreras Conference Centre in Alicante, where 2700 medical experts were gathered for the Congress of the Spanish Society of Emergency and Emergency Medicine (Semes) annual conference. The aim of the training course was to advise and train health professionals on the policy involved, when dealing with a terrorist attack involving active firearms. Faced with the chaos this type
of attack delivers, there are golden rules to follow to ensure personal safety first, before trying to save the lives of others. "The first thing they explained to us is to remain in the background without intervention until the area is safe and we are not in immediate danger," said Blas Gimenez, president of the Scientific Committee of the congress,speaking to the Spanish press. “In fact, if the risk persists, it is the police or military who move the victims into safe areas for medical attention." “Following international guidelines, when an attack occurs, the area is divided into ‘Hot’ and ‘Cold’ zones dependent on the imminent risk level,” explained Luis Orbananos, coordinator of the Semes Military Nursing group. The field hospital is usually installed in the ‘Cold’ zone and health workers must prioritise their attention to the victims according to the severity and the available resources. "We always say that the first thing is to save life, limb or function, but it all depends on where you are, "explains Orbananos. Most terror scenarios involve bleed-

ing wounds, so the training included reminding the medical personnel how to use a tourniquet, a technique, which is not normally used in normal medical situations these days. The question on most people’s lips at the conference was, are we prepared to face such an attack in Spain? Orbananos thinks yes, “The terrorist acts when he can and where he can, but in Spain, unfortunately, we have experience in this type of
intervention, as evidenced by the Atocha attack in Madrid". Blas Giménez, referring to hospital’s emergency preparation, said "All have specific plans to intervene in emergencies with multiple victims, when in an hour we must take care of 30% of all the normal emergencies of a day". Yesterday's course is one of the 70 that have been programmed in these three days of congress and is not the only one dedicated to
terrorist threats. Other workshops included training on how to handle protection equipment against nuclear, radiological, Biological and chemical. However, on the brighter side, the conference is considered to be one of the most lucrative of the year for Alicante, with the hotels hanging the no vacancies signs all week and the 2700 delegates spending their money in the restaurants and bars of the city.
Torrevieja combats truancy
The City of Torrevieja has formed a committee to combat truancy throughout the schools of the municipality. The Mayor of Torrevieja, Jose Manuel Dolon, led a meeting earlier this week at the IES Mediterraneo whereby all representatives involved in the first-time initiative met and discussed plans going forward. Education Minister, Jose Hurtado indicated that increasing truancy figures across the municipality have necessitated the formation of the committee, which the municipality itself describes as a ‘practical protocol’ to reduce those figures. He continued to explain that Torrevieja, ‘as a large tourist city, has a multi-ethnic character and therefore, a diverse and multilingual school population – an issue which directly affects truancy figures.’ All representatives involved in the initiative agreed that, as a start, schools should implement the School Absenteeism Programme of Alicante protocol, with the committee becoming involved if, after implementation of the protocol, truancy figures have not reduced. The committee was born with the idea of analysing the reasons why truancy persists and applying the corrective measures that are necessary. The committee will meet on the last Tuesday of each month and the first meeting will take place on September 26.

130 arrested in Torrevieja accused of promoting illegal immigration by Tahnee Wright The National Police have arrested 130 people in Torrevieja, including three municipal officials, accused of promoting illegal immigration through a network of real estate agents. The real estate agents are said to have provided false rental contracts to foreigners, enabling them to register in the municipality before bringing in their families. The arrested, accused of crimes of documentary misrepresentation to enable illegal immigration, include the three municipal officials as well as 16 estate agency owners, 14 agents and almost 100 illegal immigrants. The police suspect a further 500 illegal immigrants to be living in the municipality having passed through the fraudulent procedure. In a statement released on last week the Real Estate Association of Torrevieja, which represents 30 agencies in the town, has expressed its ‘total disgust at the news’. The association’s lawyer, Juan Chaparia told the press: ‘News such as this seriously damages the image of the sector and the actions of the individuals involved are unanimously condemned.’ ‘These arrests sadden us all and make us more aware that corruption in the sector must be pursued to the end.’
Slaughterhouse ceiling subsides – three men injured Three men were injured earlier this week as a ceiling collapsed at a slaughterhouse in Granja de Rocamora. The men, aged 36, 42 and 68 were working on pipes in the ceiling of the building when it gave way beneath them, causing them to fall from a height of approximately 4 metres. The incident occurred shortly after 10.30am on Calle la Huerta. Local Police officers arrived within minutes, followed by firefighters from Orihuela, Almoradi and Crevillent. Firefighers worked together to remove the men from the building. The men received medical attention at the scene and the two older men were rushed to hospital in Orihuela by SAMU ambulance having suffered multiple traumatic injuries. The younger man suffered injuries to his knee, ankle and foot.

Alicante province goes Saharan for the weekend by Andy Mansell A fiery burst of Saharan air blowing through the Alicante Province will bring some very stable weather conditions for the coming weekend, giving the coastline a preview of summer, as the thermometer is set to rise above 30 degrees. The air will stay dry for the remainder of next week, with no trace of the normal spring rains which have deserted the region this year. Temperatures during the last few days have reached 35 degrees in Mutxamel, Elche, Novelda and Orihuela, with San Vicente registering a slightly lower 32 degrees, way above the normal temperatures for early June. In Alicante the mercury rose to 28 degrees in the middle of last week, with high humidity making the conditions particularly uncomfortable. The heat is not only affecting the land this spring, as sea temperatures have risen rapidly over the last few weeks to a temperature of around 23 degrees. This sea temperature represents a two degree increase on normal early June figures, more typical of July, however the long term forecast for the region does not predict spikes of extreme hot conditions pushing the sea temperatures to those levels of 2015. The driest spring of the last 150 years has, on the other hand, re-ignited alarm throughout the province regarding the availability of water supply through to autumn. If no further rain comes through summer, the reservoirs have only enough supply to take the province through until October. The desalination plants cannot supply one hundred per-

Playa Flamenca goes pink for a day The Pink Ladies on behalf of the AECC cancer charity, 5km ‘walk for life’, takes place every year on the first Sunday in June. by Andy Mansell The support this year was amazing with well over 400 people participating in the walk, and many of them gaining sponsorship from their friends and families. When the walkers returned they were greeted by a huge crowd on the Playa Flamenca promenade, who were entertained throughout the day by a galaxy of Costa Blanca stars, all of whom gave their services free in support of Maria and The Pink Ladies. Performers on the day, included, Danza Lusion by Ariel Munoz, Jo Jo, Al Joel, Dan Davy, Sinead, Nikki G, Suzy and Jaz, No Limits, Cindy Fitzpatrick, Jonny Lea, David John Williams (Rod Stewart Tribute), Kylie Burgassi, JJ soul man. The show finale was provided by the Pink ladies very own songstress, Pink lady Patti and the wonderful Abba Elite, who received a standing ovation from the audience at the end of their performance. La Ballena building just a memory The ‘La Ballena’ building in Torrevieja will be history this summer as the City recently awarded the €225,000 contract for its demolition to Murcian company Derribos Paredes. The demolition of the 23-metre high, six-floor building comes a decade after its residents were evicted following municipal reports warning of its ‘imminent ruin’. The City initially budgeted €369,000 including VAT for the demolition, but municipal technicians have endorsed Derribos Paredes’ report which states the work can be done for €225,000, saving more than €140,000. The building will be demolished at the end of June or early July and the 560 sq/m plot cleared by the end of the summer.

The cast walked the audiences through the story of Donna/ Meryl Streep’s life as she moved to Greece and her adventures thereafter – Donna recounting the colourful life she led before becoming a Grandmother. One night, a few bold members of the au-
dience joined in ‘Zorba’s Dance’ with the cast and later stamped their feet and clapped their hands to ‘Viva Espana’ flamenco-style. Founded in 2016 and celebrating their first year together this month, the amateur theatre group has gone from strength to strength and is currently encouraging new members. Slaughterhouse ceiling subsides – three men injured
Three men were injured earlier this week as a ceiling collapsed at a slaughterhouse in Granja de Rocamora. The men, aged 36, 42 and 68 were working on pipes in the ceiling of the building when it gave way beneath them, causing them to fall from a height of approximately 4 metres. The incident occurred shortly after 10.30am on Calle la Huerta. Local Police officers arrived within minutes, followed by firefighters from Orihuela, Almoradi and Crevillent. Firefighers worked together to remove the men from the building. The men received medical attention at the scene and the two older men were rushed to hospital in Orihuela by SAMU ambulance having suffered multiple traumatic injuries. The younger man suffered injuries to his knee, ankle and foot.

Alicante cannabis farm dismantled by Andy Mansell National Police from Alicante recently apprehended nine people, seven men and two women, aged between 18 and 36, plus three children, all of Spanish nationality for drug trafficking and in the process were able to shut down one of the black spots where drugs were being sold in the north of the city. The subsequent search, uncovered more than 200 marihuana plants, a firearm with 36 bullets and two air rifles. Suspicions were aroused over the abandoned building after neighbours reported lots of movement and the Police considered the house contained a plantation of some drug which was then being distributed. A special task force then confirmed the facts. Police officers set up a surveillance operation in a nearby building, monitoring movement to and from the property and concluded that the gang had installed advanced high security systems which were discreetly in place in an attempt to avoid detection by the Police. Officers were able to confirm that

Guardia civil officer beaten by British detainee A British man, detained in the cells at the Pilar de la Horadada Guardia Civil station, attacked an officer, after being let out to use the toilet. The 36 year old had been arrested earlier for the theft of a classic car and detained in custody in the cells underneath the station. After making a request to the duty officer and being released to use the toilet the man of UK nationality, on his return to the cell, attacked the waiting officer, brutally beating him around the face and neck in a violent unprovoked frenzy. After being restrained by two fellow Guardia Civil officials, the man was returned to the cell, whilst the injured officer was taken to hospital for treatment. The incident occurred last Wednesday, when a man called into the Guardia Civil station in Pilar de la Horadada to report the theft of a classic 1970’s Ford Escort from his garage during the previous night Whilst the complaint was being processed, a call came in from an acquaintance of the man who said he had seen his car, a distinctive mustard colour, driving through the streets of nearby Orihuela. A Guardia Civil patrol car was dispatched to the area to search for the stolen vehicle and the man who had perpetrated the theft. After several hours of searching, arresting officers armed with a physical description of the suspect and his address, located him, detained and transferred him to the Station in Pilar de Horadada. After being detained in the cells, the arrested man, who had obvious symptoms of being under the effects of alcohol and drugs, asked the agents to go to the toilet. According to police report, "he went back to the cell when he attacked one of the civil guards," whom he assaulted "until two of his companions managed to rescue him." The detainee, who was under the influence of alcohol and drugs at the time of the incident was subsequently charged with the offences of attempted murder of an officer and vehicle theft of a classic Ford Escort car valued In more than 15,000 euros, which has since been recovered.

Back to nature boom in Spain by Andy Mansell We’ve all walked onto a beautiful, secluded beach sometime in our lives only to suddenly realise we’re the only ones wearing shorts or bathing suits, not knowing whether we’ve stumbled upon a recognised naturist beach or not. However the nudist scene in Spain has been a little backward at coming forward in comparison to countries like France, Germany and Greece. More than 20 million people are practicing naturism throughout Europe, a figure that has not helped Spain to become actively involved in this type of tourism, although this trend is gradually changing. Without Spain as a competitor, countries like Germany, France or Greece are at the forefront of naturism. Whilst in these destinations there is a more ingrained tradition of nudity, the practice did not reach the Spanish coasts until the mid-1970’s by which time resorts were already springing up throughout Europe to cater for the pastime. According to a study carried out by Hosteltur, more than 30,000 people practice naturism regularly in Spain and more than 500,000 sporadically.
President of the Spanish Federation of Naturism (FEM), Ismael Rodrigo, says that the problem is in insufficient availability. "There are campsites, hotels and housing developments aimed at naturists, but there are no vacancies for months," he explained. Rodrigo advocates overcoming taboos by employers and society in general, as people must understand that naturism goes beyond clothing. "Our essence is to achieve the normalisation of nudity, for bathing, for example, no clothing is necessary as it would keep humans from their nature, "said Rodrigo. Although Spain has not yet taken advantage of all the opportunities offered by this type of tourism, it does have certain advantages, such as a lack of regulation which attracts naturists from all over the world because nudity is allowed on practically any Spanish public beach. For this reason it is difficult to quantify the exact number of naturist beaches in the country, as strictly speaking by the
law of a new Penal Code in 1995, where nudism ceased to be considered a crime. In this way, the practitioner cannot be punished unless he commits "acts of violence or obscene display to minors. So although there are no official nudist beaches, the online Playea website suggests that there are 454 beaches where nudists outnumber those wearing clothes along the Spanish coastlines. However unbeknown to many visitors to the country, Spain does have two famous naked only resorts, where clothing is optional everywhere but the formal dining room during dinner. The Hotel Vera Playa (Almeria), a four-star and completely naturist hotel which, with seven other urbanizations, totals more than 2,000 beds with which it manages to house a whole community of nudists inside it’s walls. And even more striking is Charco del Palo in Lanzarote, a town that jumped into the media after being officially declared the first naturist village in the world and where you can shop, walk and even throw the trash out completely in the nude.

What an opening, what a show, what a lot of money raised!!
The STUDIO32 summer production of Mack and Mabel raised €3500 for local charities
by Andy Mansell Mack and Mabel, STUDIO32’s summer Production, opened its short run last Wednesday to a rapturous welcome from packed houses of musical theatre fans and raised a total of 3500 euros for local charities from the shows. From the moment the curtain went up on Wednesday, the audience was treated to a spectacular evening and what a performance this talented company produced. The first scene opened in the studios of silent movie director Mack Sennett in 1938 and moved from there to flashbacks throughout his movie career starting in 1911. Bill Nicholson, playing the leading role of Mack Sennett, commanded the stage from beginning to end with a powerful portrayal of this complex self-obsessed character. Starring alongside him as Mabel Normand was Bev McEwan, who captured all of the different sides of her character as she developed from an unknown innocent who walks on to a film set through to the international film star of later years that she became.
The chemistry between these two actors was a delight to behold, with the many comic and tragic aspects of their relationship portrayed with equal skill. Young Alice Wakeford clearly revelled in the part of lottie and put in a magnificent performance and the tap routine “Tap Your Troubles Away” was perhaps a highlight of the show, with Alice accompanied on stage by thirteen other tap dancers. The beautiful love ballad “I Won’t Send Roses” and feisty upbeat number “Wherever He Ain’t were song highlights and company numbers were very well staged with fine singing and dancing throughout the show. Excellent supporting roles were played by Don Wilkinson (Mr Baumann), Keith Longshaw (Mr Kessel), Jenni HardyRooney (Andi), and Nick Morgan (Frank Wyman), with the comic genius Fatty Arbuckle being played with great charm by Mervyn Williams. Luke Ringrose portrayed the charismatic and somewhat seedy character William Desmond Taylor, Mack Sennett’s rival, with a charming mix of sophistication and sleaze.
Torry U3A away day The Torrevieja U3A, chose a perfect Friday for a trip, as beautiful hot weather accompanied them on their last ‘DaysAway’ group adventure.
And throughout the show the audience were entertained by the “music department” on the film set, the wonderful character of Ella the pianist,played with gusto by Dianne Oliver. Add to all of this some great technical effects, including real silent movies being projected alongside the stage synchronised to the songs, and you have a recipe for success. Director/choreographer Susan Zillah Wilson has delivered another STUDIO32 hit. Chairman Philip Wilson commented: “It’s wonderful to be able to deliver this level of entertainment to audiences whilst raising much needed money for local charities. This show has raised over 3,500 euros and I’m very proud of everyone who has worked so hard to achieve what we have with this production.” The STUDIO32 company look forward to rehearsals for their winter production of Irving Berlin’s classic “White Christmas”. A number of members met up at San Luis and then headed off through the lovely countryside to the quaint, pretty village of Orito, from where they ascended to the unusual flower bedecked cave/ chapel of San Pascual with its stunning panoramic views. After admiring the scenery and taking many photos they returned to the village itself for a typical, if not unusual, Menu del Dia, finishing the day of with drinks in a cafe/bar next to the pretty main square. Barking mad about gadgets by Anyone who knows me will confirm that I have an

incurable addiction to gadgets. “Ah, yes,” people will say, “he’s the guy who has an iPhone cover that doubles as an e-cigarette.” Or, “yup, he’s the go-to fella if you want to charge your mobile because he carries a high-powered self-defence torch that has a USB output port.” Dropped your keys down a grating in the street? Well, I carry a powerful magnet on a telescopic rod, and on three occasions I have managed to retrieve bunches of them for grateful strangers. My man-bag is groaning under the weight of objects I’ve been compelled to buy each time an ad for some new gewgaw appears on my computer screen, and at the end of each month I dread to look at my bank statements for fear of seeing how profligate I’ve been. Do I actually need the stuff I see advertised? Oh yes, if only to enhance my reputation for being as crazy as a box of frogs. Do the things I buy work? Not always, as I discovered recently when I bought an anti-bark collar for my delinquent mini Pinscher Fifi, one of two rescue pooches I took into my 31st floor apartment about five years ago in a moment of madness. Though she’s mostly quiet in the apartment, she’s an absolute nightmare out on the street. Other dogs set her off, as do squirrels, cats, pizza delivery bikes, baby buggies, skateboards, mobility scooters and even dragonflies. Then I saw an ad for a humane anti-bark collar. It doesn’t shock an animal, as some collars do (avoid these like the plague.) Instead it bleeps loudly, and if that doesn’t shut the dog up, it follows through with a vibration.
Genius, I thought and promptly coughed up around 35 euros. Whilst eagerly awaiting its arrival I told my friend Matt about the gadget, and he bought one for his dog. When my collar did arrive, I found that it did nothing to stop Fifi’s yapping. It’s as much use as an ashtray to an astronaut. But the one Matt bought immediately silenced his dog, and he’s delighted with it. I can’t demand my money back because it WORKS – just not on Fifi. She’s the defective one. It’s a highlysensitive piece of kit – so much so that, even when it's languishing on my desk, it leaps into action whenever I cough, or if gunshots are fired in a TV movie. Which of my gadgets do I prize the most? Definitely the tactical torch because it saved me from getting mugged at a cashpoint in the UK a few months back. It temporarily blinded a would-be attacker, who spun away from the powerful beam and disabled himself by crashing into a lamp-post. After that episode, I bought a dozen of them which I sold off at cost price to friends. Oooh! Hang on a mo, an ad’s just popped up on my screen for an “olfactory” digital alarm clock that wakes you up by filling your nostrils with various aromas. Sensorwake works in combination with capsules that fill one’s bedroom with a smell of your choice: expresso, croissants, toast, chocolate, sea spray, grass or peppermint. A snip at $121.30 (including six capsules.) Now, where did I put my wallet?

Many British ex-pats have a touching trust in the British government; a childish faith which time after time proves to be misplaced. Perhaps the comfort of their illusions is preferable to reality. A Freedom of Information (FOI) request reveals that the British government purposely turned a blind eye to the slaughter of thousands of Zimbabweans by Robert Mugabe’s Fifth Brigade. The reason given was ‘to protect the United Kingdom’s political interests.’ The damning papers came to light after a request for the previously hidden documents was made by University of St Andrews lecturer Dr Hazel Cameron. In an interview with the Guardian she says; “the British government could have influenced authorities in Zimbabwe, but put political and economic interests first.” In 1982, President for life Robert Mugabe launched an offensive in Matabeleland, homelands of the Ndebele tribes. Over the following nine months the Zimbabwe National Army tortured, raped, and burned to death tens of thousands of defenceless tribesmen and women. British High Commissioner Robin Byatt, then based in Harare, says, “There were other important interests; ‘investments, trade considerations, prestige, and the need to avoid a mass exodus of ethnic-Europeans.” The High Commissioner concedes that the White citizens of Zimbabwe too were betrayed and abandoned to their fate by the Westminster elite. The ethnic-cleansing of the Ndebele peoples in 1982/3 was known as Guguruhundi (the rains that wash away the chaff). Robert Mugabe’s North Korean trained Zimbabwean troops carried out multiple murders, rapes, and torture. Pregnant women suffered their foetuses being ripped from bayoneted bellies. Randomly chosen villagers were herded into grass thatched huts which were then torched. Mass burial sites are still being discovered. Needless to say that comment by the Anti-Apartheid Movement that campaigned relentlessly for Robert Mugabe is notable by its absence. The remains of thousands of Africans are still being discovered in Zimbabwe’s once profitable but now disused mine shafts. Routinely, Mugabe’s dictatorship blames the atrocities on Rhodesian troops. However, the Westminster-installed junta refuses to allow forensic anthropologists to test the remains for one obvious reason; the remains of villagers will be shown not to have met their demise between 1965 and 1978.
It is estimated that 20,000 Africans were butchered for no other reason than their being of ‘the wrong tribe’. A reliable source says, “It is more realistic to believe up to 50,000 perished.” It is thought that up to 761,000 British expatriates live in Spain. One can only pray that the Madrid government is more sanguine than is Robert Mugabe’s regime and less treacherous than those in Pigminster.

Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith. This was Smith’s debut novel, the first of a trilogy featuring former MGB Agent Leo Demidov set in Stalin’s Soviet Russia. Imagine a combination of Gorky Park, Silence of the Lambs with Kafka. The novel was inspired by crimes committed by Anderi Chikatilo also known as the Rostor Ripper alias the Butcher of Rostor or even the Red Ripper. He committed 52 murders in the Soviet Union during the 70s and 80s. The state initially refused to admit he existed although he was eventually caught and executed. “Yesterday I was asked to denounce Raisa. My superior officers believe she’s a traitor. They believe she’s a spy working for a foreign agency.” Leo was a Stalinist secret policeman interrogating and torturing citizens. A senior apparatchik or a grim reaper perhaps? The MGB was an omnipresent secret police, a forerunner of the infamous KGB. Leo was part of this brutality having ordered the execution of thousands of his countrymen. It’s a totalitarian world full of mistrust, a society dominated by lies, secrecy, corruption, cruelty and double standards. Those who were lucky to survive execution found themselves dispatched to the gulags, forced labour camps. Under Stalin millions of prisoners died in these camps from starvation and maltreatment. Raisa is Leo’s wife, 27, beautiful and a school teacher. She married Leo out of fear not out of love. Her parents had been killed and her village

wiped out during the Great Patriotic War. An executed spy called Brodsky who was really a vet had named Raisa although Leo firmly believed that the confession was a lie. “I know my wife is innocent. The whole thing is an act of revenge.” He knows that if he doesn’t denounce his wife he will most probably be arrested along with his own parents. His refusal meant that he was reassigned which meant a demotion and exile to the Urals. The death of Stalin had caused some chaos and uncertainty and Leo in effect, escaped with his life. His second in command was a ruthless man called Vasili who had despised Leo. He had even denounced his only brother. His hatred of Leo was personal, motivated possibly by professional jealousy or by raw ambition. For Leo and Raisa it is all about survival once they become fugitives, hunted by the secret police, enemies of the state. Communist Russia had tried to claim that there was no crime in its Utopian society. The story begins in 1933 before quickly skipping twenty years. We begin in the Ukraine before the action moves to Moscow. A young boy called Arkady Fyodorovich is mowed down by a train, a tragic accident. Fyodor, his father was a low ranking member of the MGB, one of Leo’s subordinates. He believed his son had been murdered. The boy’s mouth had been stuffed with dirt and he had been left naked. Leo’s role here was to confront the family

A licence to hire by

Having waited for my Spanish driving licence since October 2016, I began to panic in May when our trip to the UK drew close and there was still no sign of the document. Panic turned to absolute despair when I was told that because the licence had been sent by mail twice (to an incomplete address as it turned out) there would be a gap of six months from the date of the last issue before a third could be re-issued, this time for collection. Collection would be no problem, but this meant that I could not expect to have it in my sweaty hands until August. If I was lucky. Trafico had provided me with a three month provisional licence in the form of an A5 letter on three occasions, and which would suffice in the event that I was stopped by the Guardia. But as I had a hire car booked in England which would require a full licence to be shown, our trip started to look in serious trouble. I sought advice from a local abogado who told me that unfortunately Trafico’s rules are Trafico’s rules,
and persuade them that the boy had been accidentally killed. The State worried that “The groundless chatter about murder could grow like a weed, spreading through the community, unsettling people, making them question one of the fundamental pillars of their new society.” In the Urals Leo was handed a case concerning the death of a child, a young girl who had been badly savaged. He knows that he needs to find some connection between Arkady’s death with this second case and the break-through comes when he discovers a third body. Can he prove that there is a serial killer without endangering his life even further? Can he stop more children from being brutally murdered? It’s a race against time. Full of tension. Leo undergoes a Damascene conversion and becomes determined to find the killer before the secret police hunt him down and execute him. Well worth a read. One of my must read books when you get the chance. I love this author.

so tough luck. Then I emailed the British consulate in Alicante and the embassy in Madrid for their help, outlining in detail the discussions and responses from Trafico over the last seven months. The email I received back was made up of two pieces of advice. First: “Whilst we sympathise with your situation you'd need to get in touch with the local traffic department to resolve the issue.” Um hello, didn’t I just tell you that I had done that? Second: “If this is not resolved within the necessary time scale your last resort may be to hire a driver.” Wonderful. Triple back flips. Why hadn’t I thought of that? But there is a happy ending and I only relate all of this in the hope that it will aid anyone out there faced with the same problem. Trafico will issue an International Drivers Permit within 3-4 days, that will entitle you to hire a vehicle in any country other than Spain. Admittedly
it costs €50, but compared to the alternative, for me at least, it turned out to be a life saver. This piece of invaluable information came from the hirers themselves – Enterprise cars in the UK – and confirmed by Trafico only when asked. Why was I not surprised.

Word order One of the hardest things about learning a new language is knowing what order to put the words in. If we only speak one language from birth then we express our thoughts in the order of that one language. If we’ve never studied a foreign language, then it wouldn’t even occur to us that it is possible to put words in a different order, and that we would have to do so to make sense in another language. English is a language that is rather rigid about word order. This is because we don’t change endings of words to agree with other words, so therefore we need our sentences in a certain order to keep our meaning clear. Spanish is a little more flexible about word order on some occasions, but not always. Sometimes there is a standard word order that can be varied if we wish to emphasize a certain word. In other cases the word order is set in stone. We have already covered some of these points in previous articles including a recent look at the position of adjectives. However, what I propose to do know is cover a few more points about word order. Closed and open questions I covered the difference between the word order of closed and open questions in chapters 39 and 40 (Step by Step Spanish Volume One) and would only like to add one thing to those pearls of wisdom. In the case of a closed question which technically should take the same order as a statement: (e.g. El niño duerme en su cama – the boy sleeps in his bed - statement. ¿El niño duerme en su cama? – Does the boy sleep in his bed? -question). However, sometimes we can invert the
subject and verb for emphasis, particularly in shorter questions. For example, “Do you speak English?” using the formal “you” would normally be “¿Habla inglés?” or “¿Usted habla inglés?” but we can also say it this way: “¿Habla usted inglés?” inverting the subject and the verb. This order is closer to English and therefore tempting to use all the time, but with more complex closed questions we should keep to the statement order putting the subject before the verb. Direct and indirect object pronouns One rule we looked at in chapters 149 to 152 (due to form part of Step by Step Spanish volume 4) was the order of direct and indirect object pronouns. This order is absolutely strict and set in stone. Indirect object pronouns always precede direct object pronouns. Therefore, “I give it to you” is “te lo doy” (to you it I
give). Likewise when tacked onto infinitives, gerunds and imperatives, this order if preserved “dámelo” (give to me it) “Estoy dándotelo” (I am giving to you it) and so on. Compound verbs and verbal phrases In Spanish we never split parts of verbs up, something we do quite happily in English. For example: “I have already seen the film” (with “already” going between the compound verb “have seen”). In Spanish this is not possible. “Ya he visto la película”. Similarly we cannot split verbal phrases, for example “Estoy viendo pasar a la gente” (I am watching the people go by). There are a few more points about word order which I will finish off next week, before I find something else to torture you with.

Santander buys Banco Popular for €1 Spanish biggest bank Santander acquired fellow Spanish lender Banco Popular in an overnight auction on Tuesday/ Wednesday for €1 after the European Central Bank warned that Spain's No. 6 bank by assets was on the verge of collapse.
The purchase, announced on Wednesday, means Santander will acquire 100 per cent of the struggling bank’s shares and debt. Santander also plans its own capital increase worth €7 billion to cover the absorption. ‘This process has been triggered by the ECB after seeing the unviable situation of the bank,’ said Spain’s Fund for Orderly Bank Restructuring (FROB). Banco Popular’s lack of viability, it added, ‘is due to liquidity problems associated with the deterioration of its deposit base over recent months and the uncertainty about its own plans to face up to the possible deterioration of the bank’s balance sheet.’ Banco Popular shares had lost more than half their value over the last week as investors became increasingly concerned it wouldn't be able to sell assets, raise capital or find a buyer. Ahead of Wednesday’s sale, many branches saw frantic scenes as shareholders and other clients demanded information about the banks’ situation. On Tuesday, at a branch in Marbella, security guards were forced to intervene as a group of shareholders demanded to be allowed to sell their investment. The purchase marks the first use of an EU regime to deal with failing banks adopted after the financial crisis. It breaks the mould of using taxpayers' money, instead imposing steep losses on shareholders and some creditors of the bank. The owners of so-called AT1 and AT2 bonds suffered roughly
€2 billion of losses, while shareholders lost everything. Senior bondholders were spared. Banco Popular's strong franchise lending to Spain's small and medium-size businesses had attracted potential bidders. Spanish banks have tried to boost their loans to SMEs as the sale of mortgages has been less robust amid Spain's economic recovery. Santander also acquired Banco Popular's unit in Portugal,
where Santander has a large market share. Santander said the aquisition will make it Spain’s largest bank in terms of assets and lending, with 17 million customers. Executive Chairman Ana Botin said the buy would strengthen her group’s diversification ‘at a time of improving economic conditions in both Spain and Portugal, and will allow us to continue to deliver for customers and shareholders on all our commitments.’

British homebuyers recouping £5.3bn British homebuyers are finally beginning to recoup the millions they paid for holiday homes that were never built after the Spanish property market crash.
In December 2015, a ruling in Spain’s supreme court paved the way for an estimated 130,000 Brits to claim directly from the banks rather than property developers, who promptly declared themselves bankrupt. An estimated £5.3bn (€6.1bn) is owed to British homebuyers in respect of deposits and stage payments on properties purchased off-plan, most of which were never completed. In total, approximately 500,000 people were affected, including approximately 300,000 Spaniards. Before the ruling, only those buyers with bank guarantees could claim directly from the banks (about 5 per cent of people affected). Spain’s supreme court then ruled that, regardless of whether buyers had guarantees, the banks had an obligation to safeguard their money. The average case takes 12-15 months to complete so it is only now that the banks are starting to pay out. Until the crash in 2008, the property boom had seen Spain building more homes than the UK, Germany and France put together. Many of these were holiday homes on the Costas, but tens of thousands were built in urbanisations on the outskirts of many Spanish towns. During the boom, Spaniards were buying first and second homes off-plan.
Spain is now littered with half-built, largely uninhabited housing developments. Cases must be filed within 15 years of the expected completion date of the property. If you think you are eligible you should first seek independent and impartial legal advice. To proceed you will need the following: • A signed contract between the client and the developer. • Proof of payment into the property developer’s bank account. In many cases, the client will have transferred money
to their lawyer rather than directly to the property developer’s bank. In such cases, your lawyer must locate the developer’s lawyer to get proof it received the funds. • Judgments – if you have previously tried to take the developer to court, it is important to let your lawyer know. • Other supporting documents for the property, such as paperwork or email exchanges, should be shared with your legal adviser to give them the best chance of reclaiming your cash. The deadline for claims is October 7 2020.
A quarter of Brits have a secret stash of cash That their partner knows nothing about. Nearly a quarter of British adults have money tucked away their partner knows absolutely nothing about, according to a new survey. Researchers polled 1,500 people in relationships and revealed the typical man will have as much as £4,234 saved on the sly, with the average female stashing away funds to the tune of £2,768. Four in ten (41 per cent) of those studied said they have a secret pot of cash because they like being financially independent and 23 per cent said they are keeping it from their other half as they are terrible with money. The data showed 27 per cent are squirreling away money for a sun soaked holiday, with 38 per cent of those looking for a break in Europe and a further 30 per cent saving for a tropical holiday in a far-flung destination – without their partner. Almost two in ten (19 per cent) have their eye on a new car and one in five are saving for new clothes and designer items. But a more careful 23 per cent are saving on the quiet in case their relationship one day breaks down and they need cash for an ‘exit strategy.’ The poll revealed the average adult felt they would need a staggering £22,748 (€26,011.84) as a buffer if their relationship fell apart. One in five said if their spouse discovered the savings they would want to spend it immediately. The poll found the most popular place to hide money from their other half was an online savings account (35 per cent), which avoids any bank statements in the post, followed by a regular bank account (26 per cent), whereby respondents admitted to destroying any statements. But underwear drawers and stuffed at the back of the wardrobe were still popular hiding places for wads of cash. A crafty one in ten (11 per cent) even give their savings to their Mum or Dad to stash away for them. A high-rolling 12 per cent keep their cash in an off-shore account and more than one in ten women are keeping cash in a bank account in their maiden name which their partner is unaware of. A blasé 17 per cent of respondents felt it made sense to save in secret – but a more honest 56 per cent felt it was sneaky and deceitful. Nearly three in ten (29 per cent) said they felt guilty for not being upfront about all their finances, but 36 per cent said they were doing it for the good of the family. The poll found 42 per cent said they would be furious if they discovered their partner had cash stashed away. In contrast 57 per cent said they would be delighted. In fact, one in twenty of those said if they found wads of cash in the house, they would nab it for themselves.

All too often British people living in Spain assume that Spanish banks operate in a similar way to the UK. This may not be the case. Some estate agents suggest that in today’s current market, many people looking to sell a Spanish property will have had to reduce the price of their property to be able to conclude a sale. With all the associated costs and taxes that need to be paid out, maximising the amount of Sterling that you finally receive for your euros is vital. Clients need to be aware of two important factors that can affect you when converting your euros into Sterling and moving those funds out of Spain.
2. Exchange rate and repatriation The agreed sale price of a property is often based on the amount of Sterling that the seller hopes to receive, according to the exchange rate at that time. However, a Notary / completion date can take place some weeks, or even months, after the contract of sale has been signed. This means that sellers could run the risk of the exchange rate moving against them, and thus reducing the amount of Sterling that they receive. For example, with an exchange rate of 1.20, a sale value of 150,000€ will give you £125,000. Should this exchange rate rise to 1.23, a rise of just 3 cents, this would give a return of £121,951, which would mean achieving £3,049 less Sterling. Manchester’s own Take That followed those touching words from Marcus Mumford, opening with their hits ‘Let It Shine’ and ‘Giants’ ahead of a rapturous reception for the appearance of Robbie Williams. Always the entertainer, Williams was the perfect choice to relax any (understandable) tensions in the crowd at Old Trafford Cricket Ground; his irrepressible, laddish charm saw fans singing along to a tailored rendition of ‘Strong’ ahead of his emotional song ‘Angels’ that acquired obvious new meaning inside the
stadium. “Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for having all of us. Flaming fiery flamenco summer
Summer is undoubtedly Flamenco season in Spain, the fire and passion taking on another dimension in the heat of a tropical night. Two festivals taking place in the country this summer offer a total contrast to the genre of Flamenco, one traditional and one avant-garde, but both sure to generate passion and enthusiasm in those who witness them. One takes place locally in Murcia at the end of July and the other in the capital Madrid at the end of June. The International Flamenco Song Festival held in San Javier from July 24 to July 30 is in its thirty eighth year and considered to be the number one of its kind. This year’s line-up includes established artists mixed with youthful performers to create a series of tempting concerts. Feted flamenco artists, Maria Vargas and Paco Cepero are on the bill, with the youth of singers like Manuel Cuevas and his son, Rancapino Chico, Raul "El Balilla" and Francisco Manuel Pajares. In addition are the inclusion of new groups bringing a breath of fresh air to this art without losing the purity of flamenco. The sextet of Vasco Hernández, the group Desflamencados and the Ballet of Lo Ferro, plus a singing competition established for many years. By contrast, the second flamenco festival takes place
in Madrid to coincide with the Gay World Pride which is celebrated on the first weekend of July. Flamenco Diverso is the first Gay Flamenco festival to be held and the star attraction will be the sensational Miguel Poveda, who will perform for three nights at the Coliseo in the capital. Long considered a macho genre of music, when Poveda came out two years ago the flamenco world was in a state of shock, but 41 year Catalan star stood proud and continued his rise to stardom. "In flamenco there have been gays since the world began. People have to love each other, to love each other, to enjoy art, life. Humans are crazy. They kill each other, they fight, they discriminate, they beat each other because a boy likes another boy, or because a girl likes another girl, " Poveda famously told El Periodico when he announced his sexuality. With other artists such as Fernando López, Antonia Jiménez, Marta Robles, and Rocio Molina taking part, organiser Jaci Gonzalez is hoping to attract a new, crossover audience visiting for the pride event, who may be attracted by the idea of flamenco: "The fundamental thing is that flamenco is sexier than rock, reggae and reggaeton, and that is clear in New York, Paris, Tokyo, Amsterdam or London.” Said Gonzalez and who would be a fool to argue with those sentiments.
Age Concern Summer Fair Age Concern will hold their much anticipated Summer Fair this weekend at the centre in C/Paganini, Urb. La Siesta, Torrevieja. Last week, The Velvetones vocal harmony group performed a short set from their repertoire at Mi Sol Campsite in Torrevieja to a very appreciative audience. Now that they have a taste of what they have to offer hopefully they will invite them back to take part in a charity event at the venue in September. Singing is a great way to meet new people and raise funds for charity, so the Velvetones are always looking for new members. Shopping night in Almoradi Almoradi will celebrate ‘Shopping night’ on Saturday night. The event, in its first year, will see 45 shops throughout the town open until midnight, with some offering special promotions. The event is promoted by the Department of Development and Tourism and encourages residents and visitors alike to enjoy the municipality at night in a festive atmosphere. There will be live music, demonstrations and entertainment for all the family.

What sauce is the best accompaniment for which meat? If you're planning on giving your barbeque an Olympic twist, why not make flaming hot chicken wings by adding a touch of spice, or champion your Usain Bolt-inspired burgers with some Jamaican jerk or flavoured sauce. If you'd rather have sauce as a side, be rebellious and try something new. ECO BEACH You can still be the king of the grill and be eco-friendly too. Keep your wine cool without ice
With the summer evenings upon us the temptation to uncork an after work bottle of wine gets ever stronger, but then the other dilemma faces us …… How do we keep the wine cool? Adding ice cubes is one idea and that’s ok if you want to dilute the taste, but what about if you want to keep the wine’s original flavor. To avoid this, wine experts recommend adding frozen grapes to your glass to instantly cool down the contents. Simply put a bunch of grapes in the freezer, then add to your wine as you sip away and voilà, your beverage will remain cooled to the perfect temperature. This rather nifty little trick has been doing the rounds again this week, most likely due to the recent burst of warm weather. Better still it works works well with both red and white and rose wines and any grapes work well for the task, red, white, pitted or seedless. No one drinks red wine warm in Summer and they are often served too warm, the phrase ‘drink at room temperature’ is centuries old and derives from a time when houses were colder. The majority of Spanish bars and cafes serve there reds chilled from June until September, meaning you have to ask the waiter for ‘temperano’, or room temperature, if you not a fan of chilled wine. Ice is fine, but it dilutes the wine, and nobody wants that. Frozen grapes keep their frozen juice inside the grape, so there is very little dilution or flavour transfer taking place. The trick to getting an instant chill is to drop a few frozen grapes (two or three) into the glass, then swirl the glass around, you’ll be surprised to find the effects are almost immediate. Of course, you could just use a wine sleeve cool your entire bottle, but this idea is a lot more fun and what’s more, you’ll be able to eat some fruity nibbles afterwards.

“Now I’m more confident and less self-conscious about my looks.” Q: What made you decide to lose weight? A: At 23 stone 8lbs, I wasn’t happy with myself, looking at photos of myself was horrible. A recent Australian study has identified a new kind of body dysmorphia in men, where even well built men think they are puny and not surprisingly they named it Bigorexia. If you’ve been anywhere around the beaches or bars over the last few weeks, you can’t fail to have come across large groups of guys on stag weekends, wandering the streets, sitting in the beach bars, shirts off, shorts on, soaking up the sun and the beer. One strikingly different look has been apparent on these guys in the last year or so and it’s not the fact they mostly all have beards, it’s the size of them. Not size, as in fat, I mean size as in huge, big, muscle torsoed, even in men of smaller stature and physique. Many of these guys, even though they probably imagine they look good, actually look rather odd and unnatural. Steroid use by men is at an epedimic stage throughout the world, helping to make men look bigger, but causing all kinds of side effects, including lack of virility,anger management issues and depression. Ignoring the odd sounding name, Bigorexia is a phenomenon that is becoming more prominent. It is essentially an inverted, male form of anorexia, where rather than perceiving themselves as fat and attempting to exert control by starving themselves slim, researchers pinpointed a significant number of young men who despite looking completely normal see themselves as being puny, and resort to excessive weighttraining, overly-controlled diets and steroid use to compensate. Men with this condition are four times less likely to be diagnosed than their female counterparts – presumably because we are now well attuned to the warning signs of eating disorders in young women, but would regard a massively gym-built man as just being fit and healthy. The study found extreme dieting and purging (either vomiting, or using laxatives, diuretics and fat-burners) increasing more rapidly among men than women, while needle exchanges reported a significant uptick in the number of patients referring for
steroid use, rather than heroin. On the steroid issue alone, recent studies suggest that 17% of gym goers are estimated to be using amphetamines to lose weight, with the same figure using thyroid hormones, 15% taking diuretics, 60,000 people in the UK taking anabolic steroids and steroid users starting younger and continuing for longer than previously. Even amongst Spanish men, the need to look bigger is driving them to steroid abuse. Just look at the smaller men in the gym with tiny ankles, and wrists, but huge pecs, arms and shoulders, that can be a sign of anabolic use. Scott Griffiths, author of the report conducted by Sydney University issued a stark warning, “Steroid abuse is rife anywhere you go and at the point now where the perception of the norm has changed. It’s like women with plastic surgery, where what you think is real actually isn’t, but you’ve stopped noticing.", he said. Pointing out that, "It's definitely gone below the radar because with issues such as bulimia and anorexia the focus is always on fat. For men it is about their muscularity. They are taking steroids, laxatives and diuretics but we don't see them as eating disorder behaviours," While men looking after themselves physically is to be applauded and sensible exercise has an important role in our mental well-being too, this is a problem we need to be alert for among ourselves and our friends because we are looking at a timebomb of health issues in later life.

Perk up your garden for peak summer June is traditionally the month when the Spanish garden comes to life, as the cooler nights and longer days allow the maximum growing potential, before the extreme summer heat arrives. Whether you’ve already got your garden looking in best condition for the coming season, or if you’re lagging behind, here are a few tips for the month, bearing in mind it’s your last chance to grow plants before the peak of summer. SHRUBS: If you haven't cut back your box bushes or hedges already, early June traditionally is the last chance to do so. Topiary shapes can be tricky to cut well at first, but with practice and special topiary shears, you'll find it gets easier. PERENNIALS AND BULBS: Deadheading is a bit of a chore but it's essential to keep plants such as roses, cosmos, tender geraniums, knautias and sweet peas flowering. Early-flowering perennials, such as hardy geraniums and alchemilla, can be cut back very hard. They will regrow, look a lot better, and may even re-flower. If you're planting perennials, make sure the plant and the ground are both well watered before they go in. Water again afterwards and keep an eye on them for signs of stress. CUTTINGS: This is the time of year to take semi-ripe cuttings. These are created using this year's growth while the stem is still a bit soft, and the technique is ideal for plants such as lavender, box, passion flower and heather. Take a non-flowering shoot and trim off about 10cm, cutting just below a leaf node. Remove the lower leaves and place the cut end in a container with cutting compost. Then wait to see if it will root and take up water before all of its water is lost through the leaves. There's more chance of success if you keep everything moist, so slip a plastic bag over the top of the container and put it in a sunny spot to keep a good sauna-like atmosphere inside.
FRUIT AND VEGETABLES: Continue planting salad crops in succession and cover fruit trees, gooseberries and currant bushes with nets. Sow runner beans and French beans in lines or with a wigwam of bamboo canes. An old trick is to line a trench with newspapers before putting back the last of the soil so the water stays in place. Be especially vigilant about watering during dry spells as beans really like to have their feet damp at all times. Don't forget pumpkins and squashes – sow now and they'll be ready for Halloween. Plant out late seed potatoes; chitting – leaving them in a warm, dark place to sprout – isn't needed at this time of year. Plant out tender plants such as courgettes, squash, tomatoes and sweetcorn, now that risk of frost has passed. Sink a long cane into the ground alongside tomatoes and water well; regular watering is key with tomatoes. Don't forget the second earthing up of potatoes to keep the light away from the tubers. Watch out for really hot days, which can dry out young plants. If the temperature goes up, try to water twice a day.
Brits’ secret love affair with hygge revealed A secret British passion for yet another aspect of Scandinavian culture has been revealed. After flat-pack furniture, meatballs and dark crime thrillers, it turns out Brits share a powerful love of ‘hygge’ too. New research shows that while many Brits may be unfamiliar with the meaning of the Danish word hygge – less than a quarter (22 per cent) of those surveyed said they understood it – the Brits really do grasp the concept, even if they don’t realise it. Hygge centres on the simple things that make us feel cosy and content. Although there is no English translation, UK homeowners are more tuned in than they know, with almost all respondents (98 per cent) saying that they feel their home has an impact on their sense of wellbeing. The survey by Everest shows that the simple things work well too. More than a third of those questioned (38 per cent) say that nice scents create a feeling of hygge in their homes, while two out of five (40 per cent) say natural light is important. More than half (58 per cent) say they feel content simply spending time with family, friends or partners, and 43 per cent say the simple act of locking their doors and windows gives them a sense of wellbeing. In true Scandinavian style, nearly a quarter of respondents (23 per cent) light a fire or log burner to help them feel contented, while around half (52 per cent) draw the curtains and almost a third (32 per cent) opt for the intimate appeal of candlelight. Bringing natural elements into the house such as flowers and pine cones creates hygge for three in ten (29 per cent). Bottom of the list for bringing hygge into the home was communication with the outside world, with only one in ten (11 per cent) saying their devices helped them feel content.

It’s everywhere, in every house you go in, stuff, momentoes, gadgets, stuff, stuff and more stuff, you know, considering we live in a throwaway society, why don’t we ever throw anything away. If you’re serious about making some space in your home, here are a few top tips on how to do it, so make a coffee, move some stuff, find a seat and read on. When you set out to reduce your clutter and create a streamlined, organised home, it's easier said than done but use these tips as a starting point: 1. Rationalise your belongings to free up space. 2. Be ruthless – if you haven't used an item for a year, send it to a charity shop, recycle it or, as a last resort, bin it. Sell unwanted CDs, DVDs, games, books, phones and games consolesat markets or online. 3. If you need an incentive to face a mountain of clutter, set a timer for 10 minutes and just do a bit at a time. Or
tackle a small area, such as clearing one shelf. Promise yourself a treat when the work is done, like a glass of wine, or a pizza, but not more clutter. 4. To prevent clutter building up, for every item you bring into the house, send another one out. To speed things up, try 'one in, two out'. 5. For a drastic measure, try putting all your possessions from one room into a box, then only bring out items as you need them. It'll soon become clear what's vital and what can be thrown away. 6. 'When you come across something you can't bear to get rid of, think carefully about its true purpose in your life,' advises Marie Kondo, author of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying. 'Many of the things you possess have already fulfilled their role'. Do you really need that My Little Pony Gymkhana set? 7. Trinkets may evoke fond memories, but you can't keep everything. Hang on to the best of them, and store the others in your heart instead, or take a picture as a keepsake.

Apple debuts ‘HomePod’ smart speaker At its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in San Jose, California on Monday, Apple unveiled the HomePod - a voice-controlled speaker powered by its virtual assistant Siri. Like devices by Amazon and Google, the HomePod can make music suggestions and adjust home temperatures. Analysts say Apple has been slow to improve its Siri virtual assistant and launch a smart speaker, after Amazon launched its Echo in 2014. But now, the world’s most valuable technology company looks set to make up for it, introducing new ways to get customers to use more of its money-making apps and services. Siri will be integrated into the $349 (€310) speaker and can make music recommendations that pair Apple Music, send text messages, check news and sports scores and control compatible home gadgets like lightbulbs and thermostats. The HomePod stands just under seven inches (18 cm) tall and is covered in fabric mesh that will come in white or grey. A computer processor will tune sound to the room and beam specific parts of music, like a singer’s voice, toward the listener. Apple will begin shipping the HomePod to the United States, Britain and Australia in December. Apple also used its annual developer meeting - its largest ever with some 5,000-people attending - to announce the next version of its mobile operating system - iOS 11 - which will include a new setting for people who use their iPhone in the car. In January, the company was sued by a US couple whose daughter was killed by a driver allegedly using FaceTime on his iPhone. The new driving mode silences notifications, turns the phone’s display off, and can automatically reply to messages to warn friends that you are driving. Samsung is testing a similar feature for its Android-powered phones. Apple also announced:

Research has found that Brits have an average of between 100- 200 social media followers, yet only 3-5 who they would consider ‘close’ friends offline. The research also found that despite the continued dominance of social media, what we all really yearn for is quality face to face time with our friends and when asked about their preferred means of communication with friends, 69 per cent opted for catching up in person rather than via social media (11 per cent), group chats (8 per cent), text message (8 per cent) or a phone call (3 per cent). As encouraging as it may seem to hear how traditional means of nurturing friendships and relationships haven’t been forgotten altogether, social media appears to be playing a significant role in the way that we form some friendships in the first place. Over half of Brits (54 per cent) claim to have met up with someone they originally met on social media and 44 per cent say they made a new best friend thanks to their online networks. Social media is also proving to be a necessary source of confidence for many given that 23 per cent admit that it takes just 10-25 likes to make us feel valued by our online friends and 60 per cent also stating that getting likes helps to boost their confidence.

Photo and video apps can turn those images and videos into something worth sharing, but there are so many apps to choose from. Quik is relatively new and works with photos and videos captured with your GoPro, phone or other device. To get started, open the app. Quik searches for, analyses and imports videos and photos from your device into a video timeline. It adds transitions and music and hey presto, you have a music video. You can change the style to match the type of video you want. Similar to filters in Instagram and photo apps, the style choices change the stock music, graphics and transitions. Grammy is a style similar to movies, Beauty gives the video an old-movie feel while Flick is in the style of tossing the photos and videos onto a table. You have several choices of stock music to choose from, or you can import your own music from your phone. Once the director (you) is satisfied you can export it to your camera roll or share it on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. Quik is available for iOS and Android.

Tech firms in extremism row British Prime Minister Theresa May called for areas of the internet to be closed because tech giants had provided a ‘safe space’ for terrorist ideology. But Google (which owns Youtube) said it had already spent hundreds of millions of pounds on tackling the problem and Facebook (which owns WhatsApp) and Twitter said they were working hard to rid their networks of terrorist activity and support. That pressure intensified following last Saturday night’s attack, which killed seven people and injured 48. The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Speaking outside Downing Street on Sunday, May said: ‘We cannot allow this ideology the safe space it needs to breed.’ ‘Yet that is precisely what the internet and the big companies provide.’ Culture Secretary Karen Bradley said tech companies needed to tackle extremist content, in a similar way to how they had removed indecent images of children. Home Secretary Amber Rudd said that tech firms needed to take down extremist content and limit the amount of end-toend encryption that terrorists can use. End-to-end encryption renders messages unreadable if they are intercepted, for example by criminals or law enforcement.

Harrods Sale A 1983 Range Rover, with Burr Walnut dashboard and an in-car Betamax video player is about to go to auction for a knockdown price. The Harrods Edition Range Rover which cost more than the average house back in the 1980s is to be auctioned off for around £30,000. The unusual off-roader was sprayed in the world’s most famous corner shop’s unmistakable green livery and has ‘Harrods Knightsbridge’ written on the bonnet. It boasts a number of external modifications including a horizontal slatted grill but it is the car’s interior where coachbuilders Wood & Pickett went the extra mile. The seats were trimmed in the finest green Connolly leather while the dashboard was made from burr walnut. It was also kitted out with state-of-the-art technology including airconditioning and a Sony TV with Betamax for passengers in the back. The result was a car which cost its first owner, a gentleman from Berkshire, a staggering £38,000. This came at a time when the typical home cost £28,000. But while the average home now costs £220,000, the Harrods Edition Range Rover is expecting to fetch between £29,000 and £37,000 when Historics at Brooklands auction it later this month. Mathew Priddy, of Historics at Brooklands, said: “It’s an honour for us to be auctioning such a rare, iconic and magnificentlyequipped Range Rover. “It is a sure-fire investment as it is believed to be the only right-hand drive model remaining, having travelled an average of less than 1,000
miles a year since 1983.” In 1998, the Harrods Edition Range Rover was sold to the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust based in Gaydon, Warks. The Trust kept it until 2003 when it sold 100 cars at auction, with the Harrods edition off-roader bought by a private collector. Historics will be auctioning the Range Rover Harrods Edition on May 20 at Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire. The original Range Rover went on sale in 1970, originally in two-door configuration only, up to 1981, when the first factory fourdoor was introduced. During the 1970s, the car, regarded as the first luxury 4x4, also became the first vehicle to be exhibited at the Louvre in Paris as an ‘exemplary work of industrial design’.They are now becoming more and more sought after by classic car collectors and investors. Rising demand has prompted Land Rover to start restoring early models - and selling them for more than £130,000.

Torrevieja CC captain Kieran Wood praised his team for their never say die attitude
Tributes to the man with one of ‘the most beautiful smiles in football’ The football world was in a state of shock last Monday, when news broke of the death of 30 year old Chiek Tiote. Tributes flooded in from previous managers and fellow players, for the former Newcastle United midfielder, who died after reportedly suffering a heart attack while training with his club in China. An Ivory Coast international, Tiote joined the Chinese League One side Beijing Enterprises in January having spent seven years at St James’ Park. He was reported to have collapsed at the training ground on Monday and been taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A statement from Beijing Enterprises added: “During a routine training session at 6pm today, Ivory Coast player Cheick Tioté suddenly fainted and the club immediately rushed him to hospital, but unfortunately efforts to save him failed and he passed away at 7pm. The player’s relatives have been informed. Beijing Enterprises football club expresses its deep sorrow and profound condolences for Mr Tioté’s untimely death.” It is understood that Tioté has been living in China on his own since leaving the north-east in January and his wife Madah is expecting their third child this week. His former manager at Newcastle, Alan Pardew, said he was devastated by the news. “From the moment I arrived at Newcastle Cheick was
a wonderful presence around the dressing room and his performances on the field often defied belief,” said Pardew. “There were days when he must have covered every blade of grass on a football field. “None of us will ever forget that incredible day when our Newcastle team came from 4-0 down to draw an unbelievable Premier League game against Arsenal, with Cheick’s incredible goal. I loved him. He was everything that you want in a Newcastle player.
