A talented sculptor from Javea has taken to the scorched tree trunks of the Granadella, creating life where there was nothing but ashes after the forest fires of last September devastated some 812 hectares. Miguel Angel Miguel Garcia - a gardener and tree-trimmer by trade - has been hard at work in the park of Pinosol, where many chalets were burnt in the blaze. Equipped with just his chain saw and an artistic eye, he has carved beautiful sculptures out of the perished pines – starting with a woodpecker before moving on to create a pelican and a giraffe. Miguel Garcia spoke with the municipal authorities first: ‘I told them about my idea of creating sculptures and they thought it was good. I began to mark the trees that I wanted to sculpt’ and had to remove many of the scorched leaves from the area before he could begin. His talents have, unsurprisingly, caught the attention of passers-by, many posting photos and videos to social media, applauding him and his work – members of local Facebook group ‘Javea Connect’ said: ‘What a brilliant idea’; ‘So talented’; ‘They look fantastic, thank you whoever you are’; ‘A great outcome from something so devastating’. Miguel Garcia is self-taught - as a child, he enjoyed arts but it was never something he pursued or studied. Some four years ago, he happened upon a programme on the Discovery Channel about sculpting trees - carving them with chain saws - and he immediately took to the task. Miguel Garcia said his ideas come to him when he looks at the tree, he ‘imagines what can emerge’ and, as passers-by have witnessed, executes his ideas with great speed. And there’s no stopping Miguel Garcia now he’s started – ‘Yes, we are going to create animals and some totem. We may also make some moai like those on Easter Island’ he said.

Alicante-Elche airport gearing up for summer avalanche
Alicante-Elche is happy to report it is ready for the hordes of extra travellers this summer
by Andy Mansell With 11.5 million passengers expected to transit through Alicante-Elche Airport between now and the end of October, operators AENA have taken steps to strengthen security and increase personnel in preparation for the season. The reinforcement programme aims to reduce waiting times at busy periods, whilst maintaining increased levels of security and giving a high level of customer service. Security services will be reinforced,
mainly in filters and coordinated with the State Security Forces, providing additional resources for both security controls and passport controls. The millions of summer travellers will fly to and from 115 airports throughout Europe and north Africa, with the growth in passengers expected to top 16% more than in 2016. Aena’s forecast for year-end figures is currently ahead of the target, with the compamy confident of reaching 13 million passengers in 2017. The company have taken on extra seasonal employees in all depart-
ments, including management and airport operations, computer system operations, electromechanical systems (luggage processing, walkways, ribbons, elevators, etc.) and cleaning services. In addition commercial and catering staff will be reinforced in a timely manner in line with the expected increase in demand. Meetings have been coordinated with airlines and tour operators to streamline operations at check in desks and with local police to help with congestion at airport pick up areas.
Benidorm a shining example on water usage Benidorm uses the same amount of water in a year as it did in 1975, despite the population increasing greatly during the interim period. The town is being used as an example of sustainable water management at a national level and featured in a conference organised by the chair of tourism studies Pedro Zaragoza under the title ‘Water, Tourism and Sustainability in Benidorm and the Costa Blanca’. Fellow delegate, Carlos Baños, from the University Institute of Tourism Research of the University of Alicante , and Jorge Olcina, from the Laboratory of Climatology of the Interuniversity Institute of Geography of the University of Alicante, extolled during their talk the fact that as far as the consumption of water , the city of skyscrapers exactly the same as it used forty two years ago, even though the population has multiplied by five in that interval (from 15,000 to 66,000 inhabitants), whilst also quadrupling further in the months of July and August. “People should know, when choosing a summer holiday, Benidorm manages drinking water better than anywhere in Spain and this should be a source of pride for the whole province of Alicante,"said Olcina.

Rural roads refined in Benissa Benissa Impuls will carry out its annual works on the rural roads of the municipality throughout June, July, August and September. The schedule, which will see 180 linear kilometres cleared, will accommodate the celebration of fiestas and the influx of tourists. Initially, works will be completed by tractor before workers refine them on foot – with hedgerows cut back and footpaths cleared. Works to the Llenes area have been completed and this week the tractors took to the areas of Biasner and Quisi before works are carried out on Paratella, Trons, Bolufers, Llenes, Pedramala, Biasner, Quisi, Grumers, Cornetes, Bellita, Tros Vell, Canor, Serrallonga, Orxelles, Lleus, Pinos, Olta, Vinyent, Canelles, Pou Roig, Benimallunt, Berdica, Raco Carabou, Collao, Pensi, Osalba, Coet, Benimarraig, Benimarco, Les Albes i altres partides and other rural areas of the municipality.

French tourist Calpe and Javea rescued by helicopter pay respects to terror attack victims
The French hiker had traversed the famous ‘Forat’ tunnel on the Sierra Bernia mountain when he became ill
by Andy Mansell A 76-year-old hiker, with a history of heart disease, was rescued from the top of the Sierra Bernia mountain earlier this week. The French tourist had been walking with three friends on the 1129 metre high mountain last Tuesday morning, when he suddenly complained of dizziness then subsequently vomited and fainted. The quartet had just traversed through the famous ‘Forat’ tunnel which leads from one side of the
mountain to the other. His worried compatriots, being aware of his history of heart problems, called the 112 emergency services number around 12.00pm. After receiving the call an Alfa 1 rescue helicopter attached to the Benidorm Fire Service was scrambled, crewed by pilot, co-pilot, medic and two rescuers. Once the group were located on the mountain, the sick man was attended to at the scene, then quickly transferred to the Hospital Marina Baixa in Villajoyosa, where he remained for observation.
Rescue services are aware that with the arrival of warmer weather, more people are walking on the mountains of the region which places extra burdens on them. They advise walkers to take at least two litres of water, snack food, warm clothing for sudden changes in weather, decent walking footwear. They also suggest people walk in groups rather than solo, carry a mobile phone and tell another person where you are going and what time you expect to retun to your home or accommodation.

First stone to be laid on new Benidorm shopping centre Next Wednesday, the first ceremonial stone will be laid on a new 70,000 square metre shopping complex to be constructed on the outskirts of Benidorm. The French multinational Unibail Rodamco has begun the work of clearing the huge plot, which has been abandoned and left as scrubland for many years. Councilor for Town Planning, Lourdes Caselles, confirmed that the land clearance could take several months, as the land area extends to more than 70,000 square metres. "This is a plot that has long been abandoned, therefore a number of unforseen procedures need to be undertaken, therefore the initial work will take more time than anticipated," said Caselles. Permission to proceed along with the appropriate licences were granted to the French owners two weeks ago, with their first objective once the land is cleared, being the construction of an underground parking facility. The project is expected to take around two years, with the owners hoping to have the commercial centre open for business before summer 2019. Estimates suggest that the commissioning of the project will entail the creation of some 2,000 direct and indirect jobs. "It will also give a big boost to the industrial sector because the other owners of the business have been waiting a long time to start work on the development" said Caselles. Meanwhile, Benidorm City Council will have to streamline procedures to begin the construction of a large roundabout and new feeder road named "Vial Discotecas ", to give access to the new shopping centre. The purchase of land for the operation has already begun without too many financial complications and Caselles explained that the money to compulsory purchase from landowners who do not want to exchange land for units in the new centre, should amount to around one million euros. In addition, the roundabout and the road will cost approximately six million euros, with half of the cost, some three million euros, contributed by the owner of the commercial centre.

Booming sucess for Javea’s ‘Beers and Bytes’ by Tahnee Wright The Department of Economic Development of the City Council of Javea in collaboration with the agency AFICCREAMA launched their new initiative promoting networking between entrepreneurs in Javea at the end of March and the third session took place at Cala Bandida last week. Attendees at the third ‘Beers and Bytes’ networking (or rather, ‘beachworking’ as the initiative has been fondly referred to) session enjoyed presentations from three local Javea entrepreneurs – one focused on new technologies, another a professor at the University of Southampton and two German brothers who presented a new way of building. Part of Javea’s commitment to becoming the capital of the beachworking movement, the primary aim of the ‘Beers and Bytes’ sessions is to bring together entrepreneurs, all with a desire to make contacts and share experiences and advice. The city’s efforts are beginning to bear fruit as a ‘Facebook Ads’ course is being arranged and in two weeks, a book will be
presented to the group by a famous ICT guru. Francesc Camprubi Martell, Head of the Department of Economic Development is behind the concept of ‘beachworking’ – promoting Javea’s unique offering of quality of life along with professional development opportunities, great for those for want to develop professionally without

Calpe launches national tourism campaign The Department of Tourism of Calpe has launched a campaign to promote national tourism to the city to coincide with the start of the summer season. The campaign is aimed at residents in Madrid, Valencia, Murcia and surrounding cities as well as Castilla La Mancha. The campaign will be feature in the main Metro and Renfe stations in Madrid and Valencia and across billboards throughout the cities plus in outer metropolitan areas. The objective of the Department of Tourism of Calpe is to promote Calpe to the Spaniards who tend to book their holidays at the last minute.

To coincide with World Environment Day, Alfas del Pi Mayor, Vicente Arques led a walk along the blue Faro d’Albir trail to the lighthouse of Albir. Arques expressed his pride at the fact the Sierra Helada natural park has four blue badge attractions designated by the European Foundation for Environmental Education (FEEA). "This year we have been awarded blue badge status to CEA Carabineros, which together with Racó de l'Albir beach, the faro walk and the lighthouse itself shows that our commitment to the environment and its protection is a palpable reality". The walk began at the recently renovated Carabineros Centre for Environment Education and continued to the lighthouse and back. The completely paved and passable pathway, "Calls for no specialist knowledge or equipment and with a total course of only around 5 kilometers it attracts people of all the ages and physical conditions as there are few slopes or technical issues involved in the two hour walk” said Guijarro. The date of World Environment day, commemorates June 5, 1972, when, Olof Palme, the later assassinated Prime Minister of Sweden and Kurt Waldheim, Secretary-General of the United Nations, officially opened the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment. The event went down in history as the Conference of The Earth of Stockholm and has since been recognised as the beginning of the political and social conscience of wordwide environmental issues. Arques expressed his delight at being able to take "a walk that is considered as one of the most beautiful of all the throughout the Valencia region and that remains one of our greatest treasures" on such an important day.

False whatsapp message spreads panic in Spain by Andy Mansell Valencian regional police authorities have acted quickly to quell a situation of panic resulting from a false allegation written in Spanish on whatsapp. The message, which went viral, without warning last Wednesday afternoon falsely claims that an imminent terrorist attack will happen in the Spanish cities of Madrid, Valencia, Alicante and Barcelona. The Bulo post on whatsapp states that the National Police Force is mobilising to an increased level 5, maximum alert. It also falsely claims that the chosen place is in the vicinity of the North Station, which "is full of national police." Before continuing with the allegations that: "They have cancelled all vacations and 5 more groups of UIP (Police Intervention Unit) have gone to madrid and there is a Geo team at the airport, so if you have to travel always be alert." “The renfe is full of National Police and the police stations, everything is revolutionised, an imminent warning

Greenpeace in Spain protests Trump climate decision
Dozens of Greenpeace supporters gathered at the gates of the Embassy of the United States of America in Madrid last Friday to protest U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to pull the U.S. out of the Paris climate agreement. Protesters accused Trump of becoming a ‘global threat’ and ‘harming the planet’ in signs they held Friday morning at the entrance of the embassy in central Madrid. Greenpeace's director in Spain Mario Rodriguez said last Thursday's announcement will require U.S. civil society and companies — as well as the rest of the world — to work harder to fight global warming. ‘The battle against climate change is irreversible,’ Rodriguez said. ‘Resistance will be maintained because the United States is much more than just the White House and Trump.’ Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, where the landmark global climate agreement was agreed in December 2015, said the decision by Donald Trump to pull the U.S. out of the deal was ‘a mistake that would have dramatic consequences.’ ‘That incredible diplomatic achievement could not have been secured without the decisive role of the United States of America. That is why President Trump is committing a mistake with dramatic and fatal consequences,’ she said. ‘Regardless of President Trump’s decision, the great cities of the world, in particular the twelve American C40 cities, remain resolutely committed to doing what needs to be done to implement the Paris agreement,’ she said, referring to 91 global cities that are have vowed to fight global warming.

Lizard survives Spain – UK flight hiding inside Broccoli Staff at an Asda store in Lanarkshire were shocked when they opened a vegetable delivery recently. Upon opening the crate – from Spain – colleagues found an Iberian wall lizard hiding inside the broccoli. The lizard, who has now been named Brock, was alive and well although severely dehydrated. Brock was retrieved from the store by animal welfare officers who are now nursing him back to health. Fiona Henderson, from the Scottish SPCA, told the English press: ‘The poor wee guy was dehydrated but otherwise unharmed from his adventures.’ ‘As he’s not a native reptile. Brock couldn’t be rehomed like our normal rescues. In this case, he’s gone to live in a multi-habitat vivarium at the Scottish Exotic Animal Rescue centre with reptile expert Nick Martin.’ ‘The vivarium is designed to mimic Brock’s habitat as closely as possible and it seems he’s settled in perfectly well despite his broccoli ordeal.’

Pandemonium at Spain’s ports Spain’s more than 6,000 stevedores went on strike on Monday to protest against potential job losses in the wake of the ports reform, which was demanded by the European Union and passed through parliament in mid-May Paralysing the country’s 39 cargo ports, workers have called for additional off-hour work stoppages on June 19, 21 and 23, plus a full 48-hour strike from June 14 to the morning of June 16. Workers are also performing scheduled stoppages on Friday, June 9, threatening the country’s main export sectors like industrial machinery and cars. The government said minimum services were being upheld at ports to ensure perishable goods such as fruit and vegetables were getting through and passenger services were not disrupted. Some container shipping companies have rerouted cargo due to the strikes. Alternative destinations for shipping companies include Portugal, Morocco and Malta. The ports reform, which aims to crack down on closed-shop hiring in a heavily unionised sector as demanded by the European Union, was passed through parliament in mid-May after a series of setbacks and clashes between political parties. Workers broke off subsequent talks with port representatives over how to implement the new law in a disagreement over safeguarding more than 6,000 jobs.

Don’t sleep in the Benidorm shower by Andy Mansell
Benidorm Town Hall and its water and sewerage operator, Hidraqua, have launched a campaign to raise awareness around saving water. Town councillor responsible for water, José Ramón González de Zárate joined Hidraqua Benidorm manager, Javier Díez last week to launch the campaign. The save water messages will appear on the back of quarterly water bills delivered to more than 22,000 households and businesses in the town. They will also feature prominently on the websites of both the organisations and 200 posters in prominent positions throughout the Benidorm municipality. The campaign messages are very simple and memorable soundbites: 'Turn off the tap when it’s not in use'; 'don’t sleep in the shower'; 'grow indigenous plants'; ' water plants in the early evening ' and 'long grass reduces evaporation'. "Although this year there should be no drought problems, we feel it is very important to continue raising awareness on the rational use of water resources in basic everyday actions,” said Zarate. Whereas Diaz explained his company conducts water saving campaigns every year that their effectiveness is: "A proven fact, because in recent years the population has virtually doubled but we have achieved a 20% saving in water usage” he explained. Survivor of N-332 accident ‘remembers nothing of that morning’ by Tahnee Wright Andres Contreras, one of the two survivors of the accident that occurred on the N-332 just over a month ago when a 28year-old Spanish woman from Gandia, who was both under the influence of alcohol and drugs and banned from driving, ploughed her Ford Mondeo head-first in to a group of six cyclists ‘remembers nothing of that morning’. Contreras’ father - Luis Alberto Contreras (53-years old) - was killed in the accident along with his friends Eduardo Monfort Gasent (28-years-old), and Jose Antonio Albi (28-years-old). The only cyclist who escaped serious injury is Jaime Escortell, the current club President. Scott Gordon (46-years-old) also remains in hospital but is recovering well. ‘My last images are from the night before. But I do not remember anything of that morning.’ Contreras told the Spanish press this week from his hospital bed at the Hospital Universitario de La Ribera in Alzira. ‘My mother told me that my father convinced me to wear the harder triathlon helmet that morning. Thanks to that helmet, I'm alive today.’ The 26-year-old cyclist, who left the intensive care unit a week ago, suffered serious injuries and does not know how many bones are broken in arms, face legs and ribs. He also suffered a lung perforation. Doctors have told Contreras that in 15 days, he has made progress that they would have expected to take a month. He said with determintation: ‘I'm going to get ahead for my father and my friends. I think of recovery as a long-distance triathlon. It's going to be tough, but I'm going to get through it.’ Contreras - who, in the next few days, will be transferred to the hospital of Aigües Vives for rehabilitation – said that he hopes the accident has raised awareness amongst drivers:

‘When someone goes out partying, they should take a taxi home and not get behind the wheel of a car. Drivers should also have more patience with cyclists and respect safety distances.’ Contreras does not hold a grudge against the driver who killed his father and his two friends. When asked by the Spanish press if he had a message for her he said: ‘I have no message for her. What am I going to say? She will suffer enough just knowing what she did’.
The driver was arrested at the scene by the Guardia Civil of Gandia and was sent to prison almost immediately on two charges of involuntary manslaughter, along with three of injury amongst others. She received a driving ban in 2014 for being drunk behind the wheel and never attended the awareness course to recover her licence. In stark contrast, in court she claimed to ‘remember nothing’.
Benissa and Balearia come together An agreement was recently signed between the City Council of Benissa and the Balearia Foundation - to encourage and promote cultural exchanges involving artists in Benissa and the Balearic Islands. Juan Manolo, Benissa’s Councillor for Culture and Ricard Perez, Manager of the Balearia Foundation, signed the agreement at the ceremony which was also attended by Abel Cardona, Mayor of Benissa. The first to reap the benefits of the agreement will be young Benissan musician Ferran Navarro, who will play in concert in Ibiza in September – as the Manager of the Balearia Foundation announced the company will explore what they can offer in terms of reduced cost travel to the white isle.

Old hat? by Andy Mansell A Benidorm bar advertising work for good looking barmaids without jealous boyfriends, has been forced to withdraw their posts on facebook and Instagram after a storm of protests from offended readers complaining about its sexist language. The bar and discotheque in the heart of the Levante beachfront entertainment zone, posted the job adverts earlier this week, but withdrew them after less than two days. "We’re looking for girls, 18 years plus, goodlooking and with good physique, lots of experience making drinks and good with people. Responsible and single. We don’t want boyfriends sick with jealously hanging around at 5am waiting to take you home, much less in the bar trying to control you," were the words of the controversial job description. Then, to add insult to injury for equal opportunity and anti-sexism supporters, the advert continued, "These are the conditions, simple and straightforward and if you don’t like them, don’t waste our time applying for the job. It’s obligatory to wear heels or platforms." The storm of criticism began immediately the advert was posted on social media, with other posters, accusing the bar of sexism, outdated 1970’s practices with some even threatening violence. After withdrawing the offending adverts, a post was written on facebook explaining the decision. "I’ve been insulted, called a sexist pig and worse. I’ve even had death threats," he wrote, "We don’t want girls working while their boyfriends come in and watch them, sick with jealousy," he explained. "It’s happened before and it causes terrible fights." He then continued to defend the demand that job seeking girls wear heels, "It’s a question of reaching over the bar," he insisted. "If you are tall then it’s not a problem but if you are too short then you just can’t reach over so you have to wear heels." "You can state physical requirements when advertising a vacancy for men, and no-one will say a thing," he bemoaned. "But the moment you do it about women, it provokes a war," he said. Granado failed to confirm whether any of the vacancies had been filled, but following the old adage ‘There’s no such thing as bad publicity’, he was probably inundated with job seeking, heel wearing, boyfriend free, good looking girls.
Toilet troubles in Denia
Wet wipes flushed down the toilet have become a serious issue for the sewage network of Denia. Aqualia and the City Council released a statement this week calling for residents to stop flushing wet wipes down their toilets, as they do not dissolve and contain materials which do not disintegrate like paper-based tissue. After wet wipes are flushed, they exit a house through a lateral pipe that connects to a public sewer system, where sewage pumps ensure that the wastewater flows in the correct direction. But, as wet wipes fail to disintegrate, they clog the pumps, causing them to break down and redirect stagnant wastewater back toward houses. Sewer systems must be shut down so that the wipes can be manually removed. Aqualia and the City Council pointed out that, with a simple change of habits, numerous breakdowns and bottlenecks in the sewerage facilities could be avoided.

A day to remember at Almafra The best of days followed the worst of news last Photo courtesy of Caroline Tyszka weekend, when hundreds of people gathered together at Almafra Camping on Sunday for the Mind Charity fundraiser in memory of Leon Coulthard. Shocked by the events in London the previous evening, the organisers, entertainers and partygoers were able to put their sadness to one side for a few hours to raise an outstanding 3000 euros for the Mind charity. Gary Burr from the Giving4Giving charity in La Nucia, presented an emotional, Vikki Caton (organiser) from Fresh Radio and Hepburns, with a cheque for 1000 euros whilst the week before another 1000 euros was donated by Giving4Giving to Pamela Dawson Tasker from AECC. Entertainers, Meatloaf tribute, the Overtones, The Commitments, Cheryle Louise and many more kept the crowd singing along, whilst buckets were passed around for donations and a raffle full of fabulous prizes was held to raise more money. With a barbecue and bar to keep people refreshed the party was a huge success, with many people staying on to watch the One Love Manchester concert together afterwards. Double shorts for Alfas festival by Andy Mansell This year’s annual Alfas del Pi Film Festival has received twice as many entries into its short film category awards as last year. Organisers of the prestigious festival, now in its 29th year, have received 1230 pieces of work for the category, which is a competition open to Spanish producers and filmmakers of fiction films, in digital format, that do not exceed 30 minutes in length. Deputy Director of the Festival, Javier Pascual, whilst expressing his delight that twice as many movies have been entered into the category than previous years, also added, “This year, moreover, 35% of the short films presented are directed by women," he said. As if to prove the growth in the use of digital technology, ninety nine percent have been received on the film making platforms Festhome (887), Movibeta (191) and Click for Festivals (142). "A large majority of shorts are sponsored by distributors and they are responsible for presenting them to festivals and for that they use digital platforms," explained Pascual, whilst confirming that only a dozen directors from the province have chosen to present their works through postal mail or courier. Madrid, Catalonia, País Vasco, Valenciana and Canarias are the regions with most entries although this year has also seen many co-productions between Spain and other European countries. A committee made up of professionals from the audiovisual and narrative environment has viewed and judged the 1230 films to decide which will make the final 20 to be entered into the final official category and those that will be screened at the festival out of competition. Additionally, the winner of the contest can attend the Goya Awards, which are seen as the Spanish Oscars, as the Festival has been selected by the Academy of the Arts and Cinematographic Sciences of Spain to pre-select candidates. This year’s Alfas del Pi Film Festival will be held in the town from July 7 to 16.

Je t’aime Benidorm by Andy Mansell A prominent French Youtube and Instagram vlogger with half a million followers recently spent a few days enjoying the bright lights and sandy beaches of Benidorm, courtesy of the local tourist office. Lea Camilleri’s trip was arranged by the Visit Benidorm Tourist Association, who guided the French youtuber around the town, showing her the great opportunities Benidorm offers, with particular emphasis on sporting activities, a rich cuisine and it’s unique nature and sustainability. The 30 year old vlogger, accompanied by her official photographer, visited numerous locations such as the famous Mirador de Benidorm and isla de Benidorm, recording her opinions and experiences along the way. During her visit she created 21 posts which accumulated a total of 150,000 likes on social media, an exposure which would equate to a spend of 60,000 euros in normal advertising vehicles. Visit Benidorm has reaffirmed it’s commitment to promoting the city through infuencers on social media, convinced by evidence that the strategy is the line to follow for future promotion campaigns. Professor Jose Maria Fábregas, director of the UPF of Barcelona School of Management, who advises the association said, "Brands have many difficulties to be credible in their messages, and an influencer will help them win credibility because if you follow someone, you believe their message and views, therefore if you receive information from them you are likely to follow their recommendations.” Following this strategy, during May this year, Visit Benidorm brought a total of 19 influencers from 3 different countries to visit the resort, reaching more than 1.2 million people in social networks and generating an economic impact of 323,000 euros.

Back to nature boom in Spain by Andy Mansell We’ve all walked onto a beautiful, secluded beach sometime in our lives only to suddenly realise we’re the only ones wearing shorts or bathing suits, not knowing whether we’ve stumbled upon a recognised naturist beach or not. However the nudist scene in Spain has been a little backward at coming forward in comparison to countries like France, Germany and Greece. More than 20 million people are practicing naturism throughout Europe, a figure that has not helped Spain to become actively involved in this type of tourism, although this trend is gradually changing. Without Spain as a competitor, countries like Germany, France or Greece are at the forefront of naturism. Whilst in these destinations there is a more ingrained tradition of nudity, the practice did not reach the Spanish coasts until the mid-1970’s by which time resorts were already springing up throughout Europe to cater for the pastime. According to a study carried out by Hosteltur, more than 30,000 people practice naturism regularly in Spain and more
than 500,000 sporadically. President of the Spanish Federation of Naturism (FEM), Ismael Rodrigo, says that the problem is in insufficient availability. "There are campsites, hotels and housing developments aimed at naturists, but there are no vacancies for months," he explained. Rodrigo advocates overcoming taboos by employers and society in general, as people must understand that naturism goes beyond clothing. "Our essence is to achieve the normalisation of nudity, for bathing, for example, no clothing is necessary as it would keep humans from their nature, "said Rodrigo. Although Spain has not yet taken advantage of all the opportunities offered by this type of tourism, it does have certain advantages, such as a lack of regulation which attracts naturists from all over the world because nudity is allowed on practically any Spanish public beach. For this reason it is difficult to quantify the exact number of naturist beaches in the country, as strictly speaking by the

law of a new Penal Code in 1995, where nudism ceased to be considered a crime. In this way, the practitioner cannot be punished unless he commits "acts of violence or obscene display to minors. So although there are no official nudist beaches, the online Playea website suggests that there are 454 beaches where nudists outnumber those wearing clothes along the Spanish coastlines. However unbeknown to many visitors to the country, Spain does have two famous naked only resorts, where clothing is optional everywhere but the formal dining room during dinner. The Hotel Vera Playa (Almeria), a four-star and completely naturist hotel which, with seven other urbanizations, totals more than 2,000 beds with which it manages to house a whole community of nudists inside it’s walls. And even more striking is Charco del Palo in Lanzarote, a town that jumped into the media after being officially declared the first naturist village in the world and where you can shop, walk and even throw the trash out completely in the nude.

The Centro de Artes Lambert in Javea played host to the opening ceremony of the Escola de Pintura Mediterrania’s month long exhibition last Saturday. The annual exhibition displays the works of the Escola de Pintura Mediterrania students, counting 116 pieces this year from both children and adults. The opening ceremony was attended by the friends and families of the students, as well as Councillor for Culture, Quico Moragues. The Escola de Pintura Mediterrania teaches more than 160 students in Javea each year, in different groups in morning, afternoon and evening sessions. For the next year, enrolment will be open from September 11. The exhibition will be open until July 2.
In a meeting last week, the Mayor of Pedreguer, Sergi Ferrus, pressed the Governing Board of the Montgo Natural Park in regard to the proposed positioning of the Tren de la Costa. The Ministry presented positioning proposals in February 2015 and the local municipalities voted in favour of proposal 3A – which runs parallel to the AP-7 and will cause the least amount of environmental damage in its surrounding areas. The local municipalities voted against proposal 3C, which will adversely affect the Montgo Natural Park, however this proposal was favoured by the Ministry and made public in 2016. Ferrus presented numerous studies and pledges against proposal 3C collected since 2016 and the Chairman of the Governing Board of the Montgo Natural Park committed to addressing the issue at the next meeting.

Javea U3A speaker right on cue The latest speaker at Javea U3A’s monthly general meeting was something of a sporting legend – and was right on cue with his audience. Former world title holder at both snooker and billiards, Ray Edmonds, entertained with stories of his days as a player and later as a BBC and ITV commentator, as he addressed members at the Parador Hotel, Javea. Ray, now 81-years-old and living in Ondara, talked about some of the famous names he played against during his glittering career, such as Joe Davis, Ray Reardon, John Spencer, John Virgo, Terry Griffiths and Alex (Hurricane) Higgins. He told how he had nothing but admiration for the skills of multi-world champion Steve Davis, but considered the greatest of all was Stephen Hendry – a ‘natural’ if ever there was one. Ray’s career spanned four decades, from the start of his amateur days when he won his first tournament at just 10-years-old. He won the world amateur snooker crown twice as well as the world professional billiards title. He left it until the age of 43 before becoming a professional snooker player, which he admitted was probably a little late, before he turned commentator. ‘Being world champion brought terrible pressure,’ Ray reflected. ‘Everybody wanted to beat me – in tournaments and even in exhibition matches. When I finally lost my title after four wins, I must say it was such a relief. I can quite understand how champions such as tennis’s Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic feel!’ Ray received a round of applause from the audience and was thanked by President Eric Atkins. U3A Marina Baixa lose their cherries by Andy Mansell The beautiful Cherry Valley’s of Vall de Gallinera, Vall d’Alcala and Vall d’Ebo were the destinations for 42 Members of the U3A Marina Baixa who left Albir last Friday. The first stop for the group was the village of L’Atzubia, for coffee and other formalities, before driving through the beautiful aforementioned valleys, stopping on the way at the local Co-operative where they were able to buy and consume an awful lot gorgeous sweet cherries Fortunately, not enough cherries were consumed to prevent the party enjoying a fabulous late lunch in Pego, before heading back to the coast and re-joining the AP-7 for their return to Albir. Rob and Liz arranged the excellent trip, which was enjoyed by all who attended and coach driver, Marco, did a brilliant job negotiating the many hairpin bends encountered on the journey. U3A Marina Baixa holds its general meetings on the fourth Monday of each month at the auditorium in the Casa de Cultura Alfaz del Pi. The next Meeting is on Monday 26th June. Many British ex-pats have a touching trust in the British government; a childish faith which time after time proves to be misplaced. Perhaps the comfort of their illusions is preferable to reality. A Freedom of Information (FOI) request reveals that the British government purposely turned a blind eye to the slaughter of thousands of Zimbabweans by Robert Mugabe’s Fifth Brigade. The reason given was ‘to protect the United Kingdom’s political interests.’ The damning papers came to light after a request for the previously hidden documents was made by University of St Andrews lecturer Dr Hazel Cameron. In an interview with the Guardian she says; “the British government could have influenced authorities in Zimbabwe, but put political and economic interests first.” In 1982, President for life Robert Mugabe launched an offensive in Matabeleland, homelands of the Ndebele tribes. Over the following nine months the Zimbabwe National Army tortured, raped, and burned to death tens of thousands of defenceless tribesmen and women. British High Commissioner Robin Byatt, then based in Harare, says, “There were other important interests; ‘investments, trade considerations, prestige, and the need to avoid a mass exodus of ethnic-Europeans.” The High Commissioner concedes that the White citizens of Zimbabwe too were betrayed and abandoned to their fate by the Westminster elite. The ethnic-cleansing of the Ndebele peoples in 1982/3 was known as Guguruhundi (the rains that wash away the chaff). Robert Mugabe’s North Korean trained Zimbabwean troops carried out multiple murders, rapes, and torture. Pregnant women suffered their foetuses being ripped from bayoneted bellies. Randomly chosen villagers were herded into grass thatched huts which were then torched. Mass burial sites are still being discovered. Needless to say that comment by the Anti-Apartheid Movement that campaigned relentlessly for Robert Mugabe is notable by its absence. The remains of thousands of Africans are still being discovered in Zimbabwe’s once profitable but now disused mine shafts. Routinely, Mugabe’s dictatorship blames the atrocities on Rhodesian troops. However, the Westminster-installed junta refuses to allow forensic anthropologists to test the remains for one obvious reason; the remains of villagers will be shown not to have met their demise between 1965 and 1978.
It is estimated that 20,000 Africans were butchered for no other reason than their being of ‘the wrong tribe’. A reliable source says, “It is more realistic to believe up to 50,000 perished.” It is thought that up to 761,000 British expatriates live in Spain. One can only pray that the Madrid government is more sanguine than is Robert Mugabe’s regime and less treacherous than those in Pigminster.
Book Review Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith. This was Smith’s debut novel, the first of a trilogy featuring former MGB Agent Leo Demidov set in Stalin’s Soviet Russia. Imagine a combination of Gorky Park, Silence of the Lambs with Kafka. The novel was inspired by crimes committed by Anderi Chikatilo also known as the Rostor Ripper alias the Butcher of Rostor or even the Red Ripper. He committed 52 murders in the Soviet Union during the 70s and 80s. The state initially refused to admit he existed although he was eventually caught and executed. “Yesterday I was asked to denounce Raisa. My superior officers believe she’s a traitor. They believe she’s a spy working for a foreign agency.” Leo was a Stalinist secret policeman interrogating and torturing citizens. A senior apparatchik or a grim reaper perhaps? The MGB was an omnipresent secret police, a forerunner of the infamous KGB. Leo was part of this brutality having ordered the execution of thousands of his countrymen. It’s a totalitarian world full of mistrust, a society dominated by lies, secrecy, corruption, cruelty and double standards. Those who were lucky to survive execution found themselves dispatched to the gulags, forced labour camps. Under Stalin millions of prisoners died in these camps from starvation and maltreatment. Raisa is Leo’s wife, 27, beautiful and a school teacher. She married Leo out of fear not out of love. Her parents had been killed and her village wiped out during the Great Patriotic War. An executed spy called Brodsky who was really a vet had named Raisa although Leo firmly believed that the confession was a lie. “I know my wife is innocent. The whole thing is an act of revenge.” He knows that if he doesn’t denounce his wife he will most probably be arrested along with his own parents. His refusal meant that he was reassigned which meant a demotion and exile to the Urals. The death of Stalin had caused some chaos and uncertainty and Leo in effect, escaped with his life. possibly by professional jealousy or by raw ambition. For Leo and Raisa it is all about survival once they become fugitives, hunted by the secret police, enemies of the state. Communist Russia had tried to claim that there was no crime in its Utopian society. The story begins in 1933 before quickly skipping twenty years. We begin in the Ukraine before the action moves to Moscow. A young boy called Arkady Fyodorovich is mowed down by a train, a tragic accident. Fyodor, his father was a low ranking member of the MGB, one of Leo’s subordinates. He believed his son had been murdered. The boy’s mouth had been stuffed with dirt and he had been left naked. Leo’s role here was to confront the family and persuade them that the boy had been accidentally killed. The State worried that “The groundless chatter about murder could grow like a weed, spreading through the community, unsettling people, making them question one of the fundamental pillars of their new society.” In the Urals Leo was handed a case concerning the death of a child, a young girl who had been badly savaged. He knows that he needs to find some connection between Arkady’s death with this second case and the break-through comes when he discovers a third body. Can he prove that there is a serial killer without endangering his life even further? Can he stop more children from being brutally murdered? It’s a race against time. Full of tension. Leo undergoes a Damascene conversion and becomes determined to find the killer before the secret police hunt him down and execute him. Well worth a read. One of my must read books when you get the chance. I love this author.

Having waited for my Spanish driving licence since October 2016, I began to panic in May when our trip to the UK drew close and there was still no sign of the document. Panic turned to absolute despair when I was told that because the licence had been sent by mail twice (to an incomplete address as it turned out) there would be a gap of six months from the date of the last issue before a third could be re-issued, this time for collection. Collection would be no problem, but this meant that I could not expect to have it in my sweaty hands until August. If I was lucky. Trafico had provided me with a three month provisional licence in the form of an A5 letter on three occasions, and which would suffice in the event that I was stopped by the Guardia. But as I had a hire car booked in England which would require a full licence to be shown, our trip started to look in serious trouble. I sought advice from a local abogado who told me that unfortunately Trafico’s rules are Trafico’s rules, so tough luck. Then I emailed the British consulate in Alicante and the embassy in Madrid for their help, outlining in detail the discussions and responses from Trafico over the last seven months. The email I received back was made up of two pieces of advice. First: “Whilst we sympathise with your situation you'd need to get in touch with the local traffic department to resolve the issue.” Um hello, didn’t I just tell you that I had done that? Second: “If this is not resolved within the necessary time scale your last resort may be to hire a driver.” Wonderful. Triple back flips. Why hadn’t I thought of that? But there is a happy ending and I only relate all of this in the hope that it will aid anyone out there faced with the same problem. Trafico will issue an International Drivers Permit within 3-4 days, that will entitle you to hire a vehicle in any country other than Spain. Admittedly it costs €50, but compared to the alternative, for me at least, it turned out to be a life saver. This piece of invaluable information came from the hirers themselves – Enterprise cars in the UK – and confirmed by Trafico only when asked. Why was I not surprised.

Word order One of the hardest things about learning a new language is knowing what order to put the words in. If we only speak one language from birth then we express our thoughts in the order of that one language. If we’ve never studied a foreign language, then it wouldn’t even occur to us that it is possible to put words in a different order, and that we would have to do so to make sense in another language. English is a language that is rather rigid about word order. This is because we don’t change endings of words to agree with other words, so therefore we need our sentences in a certain order to keep our meaning clear. Spanish is a little more flexible about word order on some occasions, but not always. Sometimes there is a standard word order that can be varied if we wish to emphasize a certain word. In other cases the word order is set in stone. We have already covered some of these points in previous articles including a recent look at the position of adjectives. However, what I propose to do know is cover a few more points about word order.
subject and verb for emphasis, particularly in shorter questions. For example, “Do you speak English?” using the formal “you” would normally be “¿Habla inglés?” or “¿Usted habla inglés?” but we can also say it this way: “¿Habla usted inglés?” inverting the subject and the verb. This order is closer to English and therefore tempting to use all the time, but with more complex closed questions we should keep to the statement order putting the subject before the verb. Direct and indirect object pronouns One rule we looked at in chapters 149 to 152 (due to form part of Step by Step Spanish volume 4) was the order of direct and indirect object pronouns. This order is absolutely strict and set in stone. Indirect object pronouns always precede direct object pronouns. Therefore, “I give it to you” is “te lo doy” (to you it I
give). Likewise when tacked onto infinitives, gerunds and imperatives, this order if preserved “dámelo” (give to me it) “Estoy dándotelo” (I am giving to you it) and so on. Compound verbs and verbal phrases In Spanish we never split parts of verbs up, something we do quite happily in English. For example: “I have already seen the film” (with “already” going between the compound verb “have seen”). In Spanish this is not possible. “Ya he visto la película”. Similarly we cannot split verbal phrases, for example “Estoy viendo pasar a la gente” (I am watching the people go by). There are a few more points about word order which I will finish off next week, before I find something else to torture you with.
Closed and open questions I covered the difference between the word order of closed and open questions in chapters 39 and 40 (Step by Step Spanish Volume One) and would only like to add one thing to those pearls of wisdom. In the case of a closed question which technically should take the same order as a statement: (e.g. El niño duerme en su cama – the boy sleeps in his bed - statement. ¿El niño duerme en su cama? – Does the boy sleep in his bed? -question). However, sometimes we can invert the

Anyone who knows me will confirm that I have an incurable addiction to gadgets. “Ah, yes,” people will say, “he’s the guy who has an iPhone cover that doubles as an e-cigarette.” Or, “yup, he’s the go-to fella if you want to charge your mobile because he carries a high-powered self-defence torch that has a USB output port.” Dropped your keys down a grating in the street? Well, I carry a powerful magnet on a telescopic rod, and on three occasions I have managed to retrieve bunches of them for grateful strangers. My man-bag is groaning under the weight of objects I’ve been compelled to buy each time an ad for some new gewgaw appears on my computer screen, and at the end of each month I dread to look at my bank statements for fear of seeing how profligate I’ve been. Do I actually need the stuff I see advertised? Oh yes, if only to enhance my reputation for being as crazy as a box of frogs. Do the things I buy work? Not always, as I discovered recently when I bought an anti-bark collar for my delinquent mini Pinscher Fifi, one of two rescue pooches I took into my 31st floor apartment about five years ago in a moment of madness. Though she’s mostly quiet in the apartment, she’s an absolute nightmare out on the street. Other dogs set her off, as do squirrels, cats, pizza delivery bikes, baby buggies, skateboards, mobility scooters and even dragonflies. Then I saw an ad for a humane anti-bark collar. It doesn’t shock an animal, as some collars do (avoid these like the plague.) Instead it bleeps loudly, and if that doesn’t shut the dog up, it follows through with a vibration. Genius, I thought and promptly coughed up around 35 euros. Whilst eagerly awaiting its arrival I told my friend Matt about the gadget, and he bought one for his dog. When my collar did arrive, I found that it did nothing to stop Fifi’s yapping. It’s as much use as an ashtray to an astronaut. But the one Matt bought immediately silenced his dog, and he’s delighted with it. I can’t demand my money back because it WORKS – just not on Fifi. She’s the defective one. It’s a highly-sensitive piece of kit – so much so that, even when it's languishing on my desk, it leaps into action whenever I cough, or if gunshots are fired in a TV movie. Which of my gadgets do I prize the most? Definitely the tactical torch because it saved me from getting mugged at a cashpoint in the UK a few months back. It temporarily blinded a would-be attacker, who spun away from the powerful beam and disabled himself by crashing into a lamp-post. After that episode, I bought a dozen of them which I sold off at cost price to friends. Oooh! Hang on a mo, an ad’s just popped up on my screen for an “olfactory” digital alarm clock that wakes you up by filling your nostrils with various aromas. Sensorwake works in combination with capsules that fill one’s bedroom with a smell of your choice: expresso, croissants, toast, chocolate, sea spray, grass or peppermint. A snip at $121.30 (including six capsules.) Now, where did I put my wallet?
Oliva’s annual Song Festival to take place in June Oliva Councillor for Fiestas, Pepe Salazar recently presented the programme for the Oliva Song Fesitval 2017, accompanied by Festival Coordinator, Toni Rodriguez. The Song Festival, year-on-year, is one of most anticipated events across the Oliva fair and festivals calendar. The initial selection stage will take place on Saturday June 3 at the Centre Polivalent d’Activitats Socioculturals – ‘Last year, the selection took place in the Casa de la Festa, which was a little small, so this year the selection will take place in the Centre Polivalent d’Activitats and on the Saturday instead of the Friday, meaning even more people can attend,’ said Salazar. Following the initial selection stage, this year’s final of the contest will take place between Friday June 16 and Sunday June 18 at the parc de l’Estacio and will also be broadcast live on the internet. At the presentation, Toni Rodriguez thanked Pepe Salazar for his support and cooperation in organising the festival – ‘people are looking forward to the festival after having enjoyed themselves so much last year. We are ready for them and we hope that even more people participate in this year’s edition, meaning more people will come to support.’ Rodriguez and Salazar were accompanied at the presentation by President of the Association of Oil Traders (ACCO) Rosa Llopis, who said - ‘for us it will be a fantastic opportunity to promote local businesses in Oliva, especially because the Oliva

Santander buys Banco Popular for €1 Spanish biggest bank Santander acquired fellow Spanish lender Banco Popular in an overnight auction on Tuesday/ Wednesday for €1 after the European Central Bank warned that Spain's No. 6 bank by assets was on the verge of collapse.
The purchase, announced on Wednesday, means Santander will acquire 100 per cent of the struggling bank’s shares and debt. Santander also plans its own capital increase worth €7 billion to cover the absorption. ‘This process has been triggered by the ECB after seeing the unviable situation of the bank,’ said Spain’s Fund for Orderly Bank Restructuring (FROB). Banco Popular’s lack of viability, it added, ‘is due to liquidity problems associated with the deterioration of its deposit base over recent months and the uncertainty about its own plans to face up to the possible deterioration of the bank’s balance sheet.’ Banco Popular shares had lost more than half their value over the last week as investors became increasingly concerned it wouldn't be able to sell assets, raise capital or find a buyer. Ahead of Wednesday’s sale, many branches saw frantic scenes as shareholders and other clients demanded information about the banks’ situation. On Tuesday, at a branch in Marbella, security guards were forced to intervene as a group of shareholders demanded to be allowed to sell their investment. The purchase marks the first use of an EU regime to deal with failing banks adopted after the financial crisis. It breaks the mould of using taxpayers' money, instead imposing steep losses on shareholders and some creditors of the bank. The owners of so-called AT1 and AT2 bonds suffered roughly
€2 billion of losses, while shareholders lost everything. Senior bondholders were spared. Banco Popular's strong franchise lending to Spain's small and medium-size businesses had attracted potential bidders. Spanish banks have tried to boost their loans to SMEs as the sale of mortgages has been less robust amid Spain's economic recovery. Santander also acquired Banco Popular's unit in Portugal,
where Santander has a large market share. Santander said the aquisition will make it Spain’s largest bank in terms of assets and lending, with 17 million customers. Executive Chairman Ana Botin said the buy would strengthen her group’s diversification ‘at a time of improving economic conditions in both Spain and Portugal, and will allow us to continue to deliver for customers and shareholders on all our commitments.’

British homebuyers recouping £5.3bn British homebuyers are finally beginning to recoup the millions they paid for holiday homes that were never built after the Spanish property market crash.
In December 2015, a ruling in Spain’s supreme court paved the way for an estimated 130,000 Brits to claim directly from the banks rather than property developers, who promptly declared themselves bankrupt. An estimated £5.3bn (€6.1bn) is owed to British homebuyers in respect of deposits and stage payments on properties purchased off-plan, most of which were never completed. In total, approximately 500,000 people were affected, including approximately 300,000 Spaniards. Before the ruling, only those buyers with bank guarantees could claim directly from the banks (about 5 per cent of people affected). Spain’s supreme court then ruled that, regardless of whether buyers had guarantees, the banks had an obligation to safeguard their money. The average case takes 12-15 months to complete so it is only now that the banks are starting to pay out. Until the crash in 2008, the property boom had seen Spain building more homes than the UK, Germany and France put together. Many of these were holiday homes on the Costas, but tens of thousands were built in urbanisations on the outskirts of many Spanish towns. During the boom, Spaniards were buying first and second homes off-plan.
Spain is now littered with half-built, largely uninhabited housing developments. Cases must be filed within 15 years of the expected completion date of the property. If you think you are eligible you should first seek independent and impartial legal advice. To proceed you will need the following: • A signed contract between the client and the developer. • Proof of payment into the property developer’s bank account. In many cases, the client will have transferred money
to their lawyer rather than directly to the property developer’s bank. In such cases, your lawyer must locate the developer’s lawyer to get proof it received the funds. • Judgments – if you have previously tried to take the developer to court, it is important to let your lawyer know. • Other supporting documents for the property, such as paperwork or email exchanges, should be shared with your legal adviser to give them the best chance of reclaiming your cash. The deadline for claims is October 7 2020.
A quarter of Brits have a secret stash of cash That their partner knows nothing about. Nearly a quarter of British adults have money tucked away their partner knows absolutely nothing about, according to a new survey. Researchers polled 1,500 people in relationships and revealed the typical man will have as much as £4,234 saved on the sly, with the average female stashing away funds to the tune of £2,768. Four in ten (41 per cent) of those studied said they have a secret pot of cash because they like being financially independent and 23 per cent said they are keeping it from their other half as they are terrible with money. The data showed 27 per cent are squirreling away money for a sun soaked holiday, with 38 per cent of those looking for a break in Europe and a further 30 per cent saving for a tropical holiday in a far-flung destination – without their partner. Almost two in ten (19 per cent) have their eye on a new car and one in five are saving for new clothes and designer items. But a more careful 23 per cent are saving on the quiet in case their relationship one day breaks down and they need cash for an ‘exit strategy.’ The poll revealed the average adult felt they would need a staggering £22,748 (€26,011.84) as a buffer if their relationship fell apart. One in five said if their spouse discovered the savings they would want to spend it immediately. The poll found the most popular place to hide money from their other half was an online savings account (35 per cent), which avoids any bank statements in the post, followed by a regular bank account (26 per cent), whereby respondents admitted to destroying any statements. But underwear drawers and stuffed at the back of the wardrobe were still popular hiding places for wads of cash. A crafty one in ten (11 per cent) even give their savings to their Mum or Dad to stash away for them. A high-rolling 12 per cent keep their cash in an off-shore account and more than one in ten women are keeping cash in a bank account in their maiden name which their partner is unaware of. A blasé 17 per cent of respondents felt it made sense to save in secret – but a more honest 56 per cent felt it was sneaky and deceitful. Nearly three in ten (29 per cent) said they felt guilty for not being upfront about all their finances, but 36 per cent said they were doing it for the good of the family. The poll found 42 per cent said they would be furious if they discovered their partner had cash stashed away. In contrast 57 per cent said they would be delighted. In fact, one in twenty of those said if they found wads of cash in the house, they would nab it for themselves.

All too often British people living in Spain assume that Spanish banks operate in a similar way to the UK. This may not be the case. Some estate agents suggest that in today’s current market, many people looking to sell a Spanish property will have had to reduce the price of their property to be able to conclude a sale. With all the associated costs and taxes that need to be paid out, maximising the amount of Sterling that you finally receive for your euros is vital. Clients need to be aware of two important factors that can affect you when converting your euros into Sterling and moving those funds out of Spain.
2. Exchange rate and repatriation The agreed sale price of a property is often based on the amount of Sterling that the seller hopes to receive, according to the exchange rate at that time. However, a Notary / completion date can take place some weeks, or even months, after the contract of sale has been signed. This means that sellers could run the risk of the exchange rate moving against them, and thus reducing the amount of Sterling that they receive. For example, with an exchange rate of 1.20, a sale value of 150,000€ will give you £125,000. Should this exchange rate rise to 1.23, a rise of just 3 cents, this would give a return of £121,951, which would mean achieving £3,049 less Sterling. Completing a tax return in Spain – who does this? When? How? If we pay all of our taxes in the UK, we do not have to pay anything in Spain do we? Javea Head takes on 60km charity trek Whilst many English residents across the Marina Alta choose to fly back to their home country in the height of summer to avoid the torrid temperatures, Fiona Phillips - Head of Secondary at Xabia International College - will only be making a pitstop in England to collect her sister, Janette as they fly off to Iceland…
Fiona and Janette will take on the tough 3-day 58km ‘Icelandic Lava Trek’ from Landmannalaugar to Thorsmork, through one of the planet’s most volcanic regions, navigating thundering waterfalls, steaming lava fields, plunging fjords and spouting geysers. Although the duration is short, the days are long and the terrain is very challenging with steep climbs and rough descents and as Fiona and Janette are camping along the way, they will need to set up their base each evening and break it down each morning. The trek holds a special place in the hearts of Fiona and Janette as they set about the challenge in memory of their mother, who went to Iceland in 1980. It was at their mother’s funeral two years ago that the sisters decided to, quite literally, follow in her footsteps, however Fiona was diagnosed with cancer a short while later so the trip was postponed until this year whilst she underwent treatment. Fiona, despite having always played tennis, admits she has ‘never been an overly keen walker or into fitness’ but in the run up to the trek has been locking the school gates each day and heading straight out to train, attending keep-fit classes, pilates sessions and stomping local walking routes. Fiona, whilst taking on the trek in memory of her mother, hopes to raise funds for Christian Aid, a charity her mother worked tirelessly for. Christian Aid has fought poverty for more than 75 years, working to support sustainable development, stop poverty, support civil society and provide disaster relief in South America, the Caribbean, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Christian Aid campaigns to change the rules and systems that keep people poor, speaking out on issues such as tax justice, trade justice, climate change and Third World debt. Careline Theatre want to hear from YOU!
Following Careline Theatre's sellout hit comedy 'Allo 'Allo, the group are already forging ahead with their next two productions - Nil By Mouth in October, directed by Dennis Arthurs and Robin Hood The Panto in January 2018, directed by Marian Carter. Nil By Mouth is a two-act comedy by John Chapman. It is set in a mixed ward of an under-funded, understaffed hospital and involves disastrous mistaken identities, wrongful diagnoses, visitors becoming patients and all sorts of medical mishaps. Robin Hood The Panto by Peter Denyer boasts all the ingredients of a
traditional pantomime recipe, with an extra helping of men in green tights. Whether your forte is acting, dancing, singing or assisting in other aspects of a production, there is something for you with Careline Theatre. If you would like to be involved with either of these productions, the readthrough for Robin Hood The Panto is Monday June 12, with auditions on Monday June 19. The read-through for Nil By Mouth is Monday June 26, with auditions on Monday July 3. Careline Theatre read-throughs are very informal and great fun. The read-throughs and auditions for
both productions will be held at the Careline Theatre in Alcalali at 7.30pm on each respective day. The read-throughs and auditions are open to non-members, although if you are cast at the audition you will be expected to join the group for €10. Founded in 1996, Careline Theatre has gone from strength to strength and boasts a membership of over 90 people. This Sunday (June 11) the annual Open-Air Divine Service of the New Apostolic Church of Denia will take place directly on the ridge of the mountain range of the Bernia, just 14 kilometres outside of Benissa. The Open-Air Divine Service will be musically adorned by the mixed choir but also by soloists and will start at 11.00am. If you are travelling to the service by car – drive through Benissa in the direction of Jalon, upon exiting the village, turn right to leave the main road and drive up the mountain in the direction of Pinos. From there, signs will lead the way. After the Open-Air Divine Service, the organisers have promised a ‘musical surprise’ sure to keep spirits high and the restaurant nearby will be offering a special menu. U3A Vall del Pop news 22 members of the U3A Vall del Pop Digital Photography Group set off from Jalon a few weeks ago to visit the BIOPARC in Valencia. Arriving at the BIOPARC and hoping for a quiet day of photography, the group soon realised the day might not be as quiet as they had first hoped as droves of children on school trips piled through the entrance gates… ‘It was a losing battle of jogged elbows and kicked ankles in our efforts to get a clear shot of something hiding in the distance.’ Although, one member - Adrian - had the right idea – bringing along with him a large tripod. ‘It was a lesson in persistence and patience - once the kids had moved on, we waited for the perfect opportunity to get the shot.’ The group express their greatest thanks to the organisers of the trip and look forward to many more throughout the summer. Happy Anniversary The General Meeting last Thursday coincided with the 35th wedding anniversary of U3A Vall del Pop President Bob Welham and his wife Sandra. June is here, the nights are at their longest, the pool is getting a ‘little’ warmer, so now there’s no excuse to keep the BBQ hidden in the garage, it’s time to embrace the coals and release your inner caveman with a few fun-filled ‘Barbie Nights.’ Here are a few tips to make your next summer BBQ the best one ever: TO LID OR NOT TO LID? THAT IS THE QUESTION It's difficult to decide whether your food is better off being cooked with the lid on, or the lid off. It is suggested that if your food will cook in under 30 minutes, then you should cook with the lid off. Any food that takes longer than this is better off being cooked with it on, as it will keep the food more moist and less heat will be wasted. OI SAUCY!! What sauce is the best accompaniment for which meat? If you're planning on giving your barbeque an Olympic twist, why not make flaming hot chicken wings by adding a touch of spice, or champion your Usain Bolt-inspired burgers with some Jamaican jerk or flavoured sauce. If you'd rather have sauce as a side, be rebellious and try something new. ECO BEACH You can still be the king of the grill and be eco-friendly too. Keep your wine cool without ice
With the summer evenings upon us the temptation to uncork an after work bottle of wine gets ever stronger, but then the other dilemma faces us …… How do we keep the wine cool? Adding ice cubes is one idea and that’s ok if you want to dilute the taste, but what about if you want to keep the wine’s original flavor. To avoid this, wine experts recommend adding frozen grapes to your glass to instantly cool down the contents. Simply put a bunch of grapes in the freezer, then add to your wine as you sip away and voilà, your beverage will remain cooled to the perfect temperature. This rather nifty little trick has been doing the rounds again this week, most likely due to the recent burst of warm weather. Better still it works well with both red and white and rose wines and any grapes work well for the task, red, white, pitted or seedless. No one drinks red wine warm in Summer and they are often served too warm, the phrase ‘drink at room temperature’ is centuries old and derives from a time when houses were colder. The majority of Spanish bars and cafes serve there reds chilled from June until September, meaning you have to ask the waiter for ‘temperano’, or room temperature, if you not a fan of chilled wine. Ice is fine, but it dilutes the wine, and nobody wants that. Frozen grapes keep their frozen juice inside the grape, so there is very little dilution or flavour transfer taking place. The trick to getting an instant chill is to drop a few frozen grapes (two or three) into the glass, then swirl the glass around, you’ll be surprised to find the effects are almost immediate. Of course, you could just use a wine sleeve cool your entire bottle, but this idea is a lot more fun and what’s more, you’ll be able to eat some fruity nibbles afterwards.

When big isn’t better A recent Australian study has identified a new kind of body dysmorphia in men, where even well built men think they are puny and not surprisingly they named it Bigorexia. If you’ve been anywhere around the beaches or bars over the last few weeks, you can’t fail to have come across large groups of guys on stag weekends, wandering the streets, sitting in the beach bars, shirts off, shorts on, soaking up the sun and the beer. One strikingly different look has been apparent on these guys in the last year or so and it’s not the fact they mostly all have beards, it’s the size of them. Not size, as in fat, I mean size as in huge, big, muscle torsoed, even in men of smaller stature and physique. Many of these guys, even though they probably imagine they look good, actually look rather odd and unnatural. Steroid use by men is at an epedimic stage throughout the world, helping to make men look bigger, but causing all kinds of side effects, including lack of virility,anger management issues and depression. Ignoring the odd sounding name, Bigorexia is a phenomenon that is becoming more prominent. It is essentially an inverted, male form of anorexia, where rather than perceiving themselves as fat and attempting to exert control by starving themselves slim, researchers pinpointed a significant number of young men who despite looking completely normal see themselves as being puny, and resort to excessive weighttraining, overly-controlled diets and steroid use to compensate. Men with this condition are four times less likely to be diagnosed than their female counterparts – presumably because we are now well attuned to the warning signs of eating disorders in young women, but would regard a massively gym-built man as just being fit and healthy. The study found extreme dieting and purging (either vomiting, or using laxatives, diuretics and fat-burners) increasing more rapidly among men than women, while
needle exchanges reported a significant uptick in the number of patients referring for steroid use, rather than heroin. On the steroid issue alone, recent studies suggest that 17% of gym goers are estimated to be using amphetamines to lose weight, with the same figure using thyroid hormones, 15% taking diuretics, 60,000 people in the UK taking anabolic steroids and steroid users starting younger and continuing for longer than previously. Even amongst Spanish men, the need to look bigger is driving them to steroid abuse. Just look at the smaller men in the gym with tiny ankles, and wrists, but huge pecs, arms and shoulders, that can be a sign of anabolic use. Scott Griffiths, author of the report conducted by Sydney University issued a stark warning, “Steroid abuse is rife anywhere you go and at the point now where the perception of the norm has changed. It’s like women with plastic surgery, where what you think is real actually isn’t, but you’ve stopped noticing.", he said. Pointing out that, "It's definitely gone below the radar because with issues such as bulimia and anorexia the focus is always on fat. For men it is about their muscularity. They are taking steroids, laxatives and diuretics but we don't see them as eating disorder behaviours," While men looking after themselves physically is to be applauded and sensible exercise has an important role in our mental well-being too, this is a problem we need to be alert for among ourselves and our friends because we are looking at a timebomb of health issues in later life.
Crunch on eggshells for calcium boost I had a childhood friend who had a lovely black labrador called Paddy. She was something of a canine dustbin, capable of eating anything the family left lying around. One snack she particularly loved and would sit drooling in the kitchen waiting for, was, believe it or not, eggshells, which she would happily crunch on all day. I hadn't given eggshells much thought until I saw a recent scientific study which immediately took me back in time a few decades to my friend's kitchen, Paddy the black labrador and her favourite crunchy snack. Yes, they might be good for compost, but egg shells also have another important use. Each year in the US alone, Business Insider reports, the food industry is responsible for 150,000 tons of shell waste. We automatically bin our shells when making anything involving eggs . But instead of throwing them away, we should give some serious thought to eating them. Not just because of the environmental benefits, but also because of their nutritional value. No, It's not April Fools Day, there is a serious side to this story. Egg shells are a great and rich source of calcium because they are 95 per cent calcium carbonate which, incidentally is used as an antacid to relieve heartburn, acid indigestion, and upset stomach. One single egg shell contains around two grams of calcium which works out as being between two to four times our recommended daily allowance. This, however, is not a call to start mainlining raw eggshells, which would be rather silly and could play havoc with sensitive teeth and gums. Instead, boil the shells to blitz any harmful bacteria. After the shells are nicely boiled, you then bake them in the oven for 15 to 20 minutes with the temperature turned up to 200F. They should then grind nicely into a fine powder, which you can do in a blender. The powder remains a good source of calcium and has been shown to reduce pain and bone loss in women with senile osteoporosis. You don't need to eat the powder on its own. It can be added to foods such as bread, pizza dough and spaghetti. But be cautious. Too much or too little calcium can be dangerous, with the average adult needing just one gram per day.

What’s all the fuss about cholesterol?
Cholesterol is a lipid (fat chemical) that is produced by the liver from the fatty foods that we eat. The level of cholesterol in your blood is an important factor in determining your risk of developing heart disease or suffering a stroke. Cholesterol is carried in the blood as part of particles called lipoproteins. Low-density lipoproteins carrying cholesterol (LDL cholesterol) is often referred to as bad cholesterol as this is involved in forming atheroma (see below) which is the main underlying cause of various cardiovascular diseases. High-density lipoproteins carrying cholesterol (HDL cholesterol) is often referred to as good cholesterol as HDL may prevent atheroma forming. Atheroma are like small fatty lumps that develop within the inside lining of arteries (blood vessels). Atheroma is also known as atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries. Over time, patches of atheroma can become larger and thicker thus making an artery narrower. This in turn reduces the blood flow through the artery. This narrowing of the arteries is the cause of angina. Should a blood clot (thrombosis) form over a patch of atheroma it can completely block the blood flow causing a heart attack, stroke or other serious problems. Ignorance is not bliss! Because untreated high cholesterol levels can have such disastrous consequences, it is important that all adults should be aware of their cholesterol level. This is determined by a very simple blood test of which the results are known in 24hrs. Should cholesterol levels be high the patient will usually be advised about diet and life style changes, then cholesterol re-checked in about 3 months time. If cholesterol levels remain high the patient may be commenced on medication to reduce it. Do not wait for a serious life threatening condition to manifest and reveal the fact that you have high cholesterol. Early diagnosis and management can without doubt save your life.

Perk up your garden for peak summer June is traditionally the month when the Spanish garden comes to life, as the cooler nights and longer days allow the maximum growing potential, before the extreme summer heat arrives. Whether you’ve already got your garden looking in best condition for the coming season, or if you’re lagging behind, here are a few tips for the month, bearing in mind it’s your last chance to grow plants before the peak of summer. SHRUBS: If you haven't cut back your box bushes or hedges already, early June traditionally is the last chance to do so. Topiary shapes can be tricky to cut well at first, but with practice and special topiary shears, you'll find it gets easier. PERENNIALS AND BULBS: Deadheading is a bit of a chore but it's essential to keep plants such as roses, cosmos, tender geraniums, knautias and sweet peas flowering. Early-flowering perennials, such as hardy geraniums and alchemilla, can be cut back very hard. They will regrow, look a lot better, and may even re-flower. If you're planting perennials, make sure the plant and the ground are both well watered before they go in. Water again afterwards and keep an eye on them for signs of stress. CUTTINGS: This is the time of year to take semi-ripe cuttings. These are created using this year's growth while the stem is still a bit soft, and the technique is ideal for plants such as lavender, box, passion flower and heather. Take a non-flowering shoot and trim off about 10cm, cutting just below a leaf node. Remove the lower leaves and place the cut end in a container with cutting compost. Then wait to see if it will root and take up water before all of its water is lost through the leaves. There's more chance of success if you keep everything moist, so slip a plastic bag over the top of the container and put it in a sunny spot to keep a good sauna-like atmosphere inside.
FRUIT AND VEGETABLES: Continue planting salad crops in succession and cover fruit trees, gooseberries and currant bushes with nets. Sow runner beans and French beans in lines or with a wigwam of bamboo canes. An old trick is to line a trench with newspapers before putting back the last of the soil so the water stays in place. Be especially vigilant about watering during dry spells as beans really like to have their feet damp at all times. Don't forget pumpkins and squashes – sow now and they'll be ready for Halloween. Plant out late seed potatoes; chitting – leaving them in a warm, dark place to sprout – isn't needed at this time of year. Plant out tender plants such as courgettes, squash, tomatoes and sweetcorn, now that risk of frost has passed. Sink a long cane into the ground alongside tomatoes and water well; regular watering is key with tomatoes. Don't forget the second earthing up of potatoes to keep the light away from the tubers. Watch out for really hot days, which can dry out young plants. If the temperature goes up, try to water twice a day.
Brits’ secret love affair with hygge revealed A secret British passion for yet another aspect of Scandinavian culture has been revealed. After flat-pack furniture, meatballs and dark crime thrillers, it turns out Brits share a powerful love of ‘hygge’ too. New research shows that while many Brits may be unfamiliar with the meaning of the Danish word hygge – less than a quarter (22 per cent) of those surveyed said they understood it – the Brits really do grasp the concept, even if they don’t realise it. Hygge centres on the simple things that make us feel cosy and content. Although there is no English translation, UK homeowners are more tuned in than they know, with almost all respondents (98 per cent) saying that they feel their home has an impact on their sense of wellbeing. The survey by Everest shows that the simple things work well too. More than a third of those questioned (38 per cent) say that nice scents create a feeling of hygge in their homes, while two out of five (40 per cent) say natural light is important. More than half (58 per cent) say they feel content simply spending time with family, friends or partners, and 43 per cent say the simple act of locking their doors and windows gives them a sense of wellbeing. In true Scandinavian style, nearly a quarter of respondents (23 per cent) light a fire or log burner to help them feel contented, while around half (52 per cent) draw the curtains and almost a third (32 per cent) opt for the intimate appeal of candlelight. Bringing natural elements into the house such as flowers and pine cones creates hygge for three in ten (29 per cent). Bottom of the list for bringing hygge into the home was communication with the outside world, with only one in ten (11 per cent) saying their devices helped them feel content.

If you need an incentive to face a mountain of clutter, set a timer for 10 minutes and just do a bit at a time. Or
tackle a small area, such as clearing one shelf. Promise yourself a treat when the work is done, like a glass of wine, or a pizza, but not more clutter. 4. To prevent clutter building up, for every item you bring into the house, send another one out. To speed things up, try 'one in, two out'. 5. For a drastic measure, try putting all your possessions from one room into a box, then only bring out items as you need them. It'll soon become clear what's vital and what can be thrown away. 6. 'When you come across something you can't bear to get rid of, think carefully about its true purpose in your life,' advises Marie Kondo, author of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying. Apple debuts ‘HomePod’ smart speaker At its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in San Jose, California on Monday, Apple unveiled the HomePod - a voice-controlled speaker powered by its virtual assistant Siri. Like devices by Amazon and Google, the HomePod can make music suggestions and adjust home temperatures. Analysts say Apple has been slow to improve its Siri virtual assistant and launch a smart speaker, after Amazon launched its Echo in 2014. But now, the world’s most valuable technology company looks set to make up for it, introducing new ways to get customers to use more of its money-making apps and services. Siri will be integrated into the $349 (€310) speaker and can make music recommendations that pair Apple Music, send text messages, check news and sports scores and control compatible home gadgets like lightbulbs and thermostats. The HomePod stands just under seven inches (18 cm) tall and is covered in fabric mesh that will come in white or grey. A computer processor will tune sound to the room and beam specific parts of music, like a singer’s voice, toward the listener. Apple will begin shipping the HomePod to the United States, Britain and Australia in December. Apple also used its annual developer meeting - its largest ever with some 5,000-people attending - to announce the next version of its mobile operating system - iOS 11 - which will include a new setting for people who use their iPhone in the car. In January, the company was sued by a US couple whose daughter was killed by a driver allegedly using FaceTime on his iPhone. The new driving mode silences notifications, turns the phone’s display off, and can automatically reply to messages to warn friends that you are driving. A 1983 Range Rover, with Burr Walnut dashboard and an in-car Betamax video player is about to go to auction for a knockdown price. The Harrods Edition Range Rover which cost more than the average house back in the 1980s is to be auctioned off for around £30,000. The unusual off-roader was sprayed in the world’s most famous corner shop’s unmistakable green livery and has ‘Harrods Knightsbridge’ written on the bonnet. It boasts a number of external modifications including a horizontal slatted grill but it is the car’s interior where coachbuilders Wood & Pickett went the extra mile. The seats were trimmed in the finest green Connolly leather while the dashboard was made from burr walnut. It was also kitted out with state-of-the-art technology including air-conditioning and a Sony TV with Betamax for passengers in the back. The result was a car which cost its first owner, a gentleman from Berkshire, a staggering £38,000. This came at a time when the typical home cost £28,000. But while the average home now costs £220,000, the Harrods Edition Range Rover is expecting to fetch between £29,000 and £37,000 when Historics at Brooklands auction it later this month. Mathew Priddy, of Historics at Brooklands, said: “It’s an honour for us to be auctioning such a rare, iconic and magnificently-equipped Range Rover. “It is a sure-fire investment as it is believed to be the only right-hand drive model remaining, having travelled an average of less than 1,000 miles a year since 1983.” In 1998, the Harrods Edition Range Rover was sold to the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust based in Gaydon, Warks. The Trust kept it until 2003 when it sold 100 cars at auction, with the Harrods edition off-roader bought by a private collector. Historics will be auctioning the Range Rover Harrods Edition on May 20 at Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire. The original Range Rover went on sale in 1970, originally in two-door configuration only, up to 1981, when the first factory four-door was introduced. During the 1970s, the car, regarded as the first luxury 4x4, also became the first vehicle to be exhibited at the Louvre in Paris as an ‘exemplary work of industrial design’.They are now becoming more and more sought

Javea International Tennis Club going up
JITC tennis team wins promotion to Division 1. Last week Club de Tenis Buenavista in Benissa , hosted the end of season area league tournament and the subsequent presentation of awards. The A team of JITC (Javea International Tennis Club), based at La Sella near Pedregruer were winners of Division 2 and gained promotion. Their winning squad included Peter Jones, Alan Gibbs, Simon Poot, Rolf Busse, John Hudson, Andre Trublet and Rod McIntosh. The winners of Division 1 were Buenavista A team. The winning squad was captained by Juan Manglano and included Juan Jimenez, Hermann Rudiger , Axel Libertz, Nacho Espinosa , and Jon Modica. During the season each team played home and away and it was estimated that players from eight different countries had participated. The standard of play was high and all the games were competitive and friendly. On the day of the presentations a competitive mens doubles tournament was also played, with each round requiring a change of partner and opponent. Twenty one players participated and the player who eventually came out on top with the most amount of games won was Nicolas Strebal. The 2017/2018 starts in September and it is planned that there will be some additional teams and clubs playing next season.
End of season showdown for Valencia basket
Last Monday, Valencia Basket secured their place in the Endesa League Final Playoff vs. Real Madrid, by beating Baskonia 85-77, but also completed the roster of teams that will fight to win the 2017 Gran Canaria Endesa Supercup. Herbalife Gran Canaria (host), Real Madrid (Copa del Rey winner), Unicaja (EuroCup champion) and Valencia Basket (champion or runner-up of the Endesa League) have confirmed their presence in the tournament for the first time in three years. It will be the fourth time the Valencia Basket team have made it to the ‘winners’ competition, after previously qualifying in 2010, 2012 and 2014. Following last Monday’s magnificent 85-77 victory over Baskonia, coach Pedro Martinez, summed up how he felt after the game: “It was an excellent result, because we played with a very good concentration. We started the game excellent in defense, in rhythm, with Romain Sato. We had moments of difficulty in the second half, but, Fernando, Antoine, Thomas made an excellent match, they have all been at a great level. I am very happy with what we have achieved today, very proud of the players, Staff, everyone. We have to be very satisfied today of what we have achieved and now to continue in the competition. The Final Playoff of the Endesa League 2016-17 between Real Madrid and Valencia Basket Club will be played from next Friday, June 9, after the two clubs won through the semi finals of the competition to Unicaja and Baskonia respectively. Tributes to the man with one of ‘the most beautiful smiles in football’ The football world was in a state of shock last Monday, when news broke of the death of 30 year old Chiek Tiote. Tributes flooded in from previous managers and fellow players, for the former Newcastle United midfielder, who died after reportedly suffering a heart attack while training with his club in China. An Ivory Coast international, Tiote joined the Chinese League One side Beijing Enterprises in January having spent seven years at St James’ Park. He was reported to have collapsed at the training ground on Monday and been taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A statement from Beijing Enterprises added: “During a routine training session at 6pm today, Ivory Coast player Cheick Tioté suddenly fainted and the club immediately rushed him to hospital, but unfortunately efforts to save him failed and he passed away at 7pm. The player’s relatives have been informed. Beijing Enterprises football club expresses its deep sorrow and profound condolences for Mr Tioté’s untimely death.” It is understood that Tioté has been living in China on his own since leaving the north-east in January and his wife Madah is expecting their third child this week. His former manager at Newcastle, Alan Pardew, said he was devastated by the news. “From the moment I arrived at Newcastle Cheick was
a wonderful presence around the dressing room and his performances on the field often defied belief,” said Pardew. “There were days when he must have covered every blade of grass on a football field. “None of us will ever forget that incredible day when our Newcastle team came from 4-0 down to draw an unbelievable Premier League game against Arsenal, with Cheick’s incredible goal. I loved him. He was everything that you want in a Newcastle player.
