In addition, many thousands of people visited Santiago de la Ribera to get a sight of the fantastic concentration of custom motorcycles from all over Spain and countries such as Germany, France, Finland and Russia, amongst others. During the motorcycle and musical event visitors were able to admire and photograph the authentic two-wheeled jewels, classic motorcycles reconverted and accessorized by their proud owners to make them unique. President of the organising club, the Hot Rally Murcia Chapter, Andrés Soto highlighted, for the second year, the unbeatable location, next to the Mar Menor, as well as the welcome and collaboration of the San Javier City Council. In addition to the Hot Rally, there was a flea market full of accessories, objects and products related to motorcycles.

Orihuela supports diversity The City of Orihuela will be the first in the province to sign an agreement with the Diversitat association to protect the LGBT community. by Tahnee Wright The Councillor Sabina Galindo explained that ‘in light of the social rejection suffered by the LGBT community, it is necessary to adopt public measures in both prevention and care for victims.’ The Diversitat agreement encompasses measures for the prevention of rejection, awareness and visibility of the LGBT community and will provide for support from ‘professionals’ with ‘resources available to people who are victims of hate crimes because of their sexual status or gender identity.’ Tono Abad, President of Diversitat, added that ‘Orihuela is the first municipality in Alicante to adhere to this agreement and we thank them for having opted to include diversity in their municipal agenda.’ The agreement directs that the
City Council becomes part of the Hate Crimes Bureau of the Valencian Observatory and implements the ‘Municipal
Plan for Attention to Diversity’ – to include an educational agenda of courses, lectures and workshops.
Seven arrested as drug trafficking group bust Seven detainees arrested as suspects of a drug trafficking group were brought to justice in Murcia last week. Throughout the course of the investigation, more than 50 officers of the National Police searched seven houses in Jose Maria Lapuerta, Los Dolores, Lo Campano and La Union, seizing more than three kilos of cocaine, several mobiles, tablets and a pistol stolen in 2006. One of the detainees is awaiting trial as alleged perpetrator of a murder in Monte Calvario in 2015. Two women were released on bail, one being pregnant and the other having three children.

YouGov projects May could lose majority in June election British Prime Minister Theresa May could lose control of parliament in Britain's June 8 election, according to a projection by opinion polling company YouGov, raising the possibility of a political standoff just as formal Brexit talks are set to begin. by Tahnee Wright In contrast to opinion polls that have, until the past week, shown May on course for a big win in the snap election she called, the YouGov model suggested May could lose 20 seats and her 17-seat working majority in the 650-seat British parliament. The YouGov constituency projection, based on 50,000 interviews over the course of a week, showed May would win 310 seats, down from the 331 seats won by her predecessor David Cameron in 2015. The projection showed opposition Labour Party would win 257 seats, up from 232 seats in 2015. Smaller parties, including the Scottish National Party and Northern Irish parties, could win 83 seats, The Times newspaper quoted YouGov as predicting. If the YouGov model turns out to be accurate, May would be well short of the 326 seats needed to form a government in June, when formal Brexit negotiations are set to begin.
May called the snap election in a bid to strengthen her hand in negotiations on Britain's exit from the European Union, to win more time to deal with the impact of the divorce and to strengthen her grip on the Conservative Party. But if she does not beat the 12-seat majority Cameron won in 2015, her electoral gamble will have failed and her authority could be undermined just as she tries to deliver what she has told voters will be a successful Brexit.
Two arrested for impersonating driving test candidate TWO men who attempted to take driving tests in another candidate's name were arrested on the Costa Brava last week. The first man was caught on Thursday in Sant Joan les Fonts, Girona when he produced his ID before taking the practical test and officers discovered it to be fake. He was arrested, but the next day – Friday – a second man claiming to be the 'real' candidate arrived to take the exam and was also arrested. Police say the second man was planning to take the test on behalf of his brother, who is 14 years older than him. Substituting candidates in an exam is a criminal offence in Spain. Both men have been released with charges.

Spanish police raided 25 homes, warehouses and gyms and arrested 14 people accused of belonging to a network manufacturing and trafficking performanceenhancing drugs, the interior ministry said earlier this week. 3 million doses of 120 different substances, including anabolic steroids and hormones and active and inert drug-making ingredients and equipment were seized. The operation took place in Alicante, Malaga, Valencia and Valladolid and began in October 2016 after police detected a wholesale distribution network of manufactured drugs and ingredients originating mainly in China and India. During the raids, substantial amounts of base ingredients and drug-making equipment were uncovered, suggesting at least part of the network was responsible for the manufacturing of home-made drugs, the ministry said.

Seven injured in A-30 multiple collision Seven men were slightly injured on Wednesday after being involved in a multiple collision on the A-30 in Molina de Segura. The cause of the incident - that occurred at around 6.15pm on the La Estrella industrial estate – has not yet been confirmed. The Guardia Civil arrived at the scene almost immediately, along with three ambulances and a mobile emergency unit. Medics attended and stabilised the seven injured men, before transferring them to the Morales Meseguer hospital in Murcia. The Directorate General of Traffic announced on their website that, as a result of the collision, a sevenkilometre traffic queue had built up.
Vega Baja on fire A fire broke out earlier this week in a house on calle Meson in Albatera. The flames ravaged the property, rendering it uninhabitable whilst the owner of the property was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation. Investigators have not yet revealed the cause of the fire. On the same day, firefighters were called to extinguish an extensive area of palm trees between San Isidro and El Realengo in Crevillent. The fire was reported at 4.00pm and was extinguished by 8.00pm.

by Andy Mansell Carl Louden and wife Nicola travelled from their home near Torrevieja, where they have lived for a little over a year to Portsmouth to receive the award, which relates to his time served as a Royal Naval Staff Officer (RNSO) for HMS King Alfred, the RNR Unit where he spent his final appointment before retiring. During the award ceremony aboard Lord Nelson’s former flagship, Carl was presented with his honour by Second Sea Lord, Vice Admiral Jonathan Woodcock OBE. The testimonial, written by the Commanding Officer of HMS King Alfred, Cdr Chris Webb, spoke of Carl’s professionalism and determination in support of part time reservists who were being deployed to the Future
Reserves 2020 Programme and to the critical role that he played in the delivery of the largest trained strength figure in an RNR Unit. Carl and Nicola have quickly established themselves as valuable members of the Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion and the Torrevieja Royal Naval Association and, when in Spain, they can regularly be seen supporting both of these very worthwhile causes. In fact Carl still has many commitments back in the United Kingdom including a commitment to serve in the Royal Naval Reserve for a further 5 years, to which he was transferred at the end of last year. Part of that service will see him participating in the annual RN/RM Charity sponsored Field Gun Competition as part of the RNR team.

The Brits are back Figures for the first quarter of 2017, show tourists from the UK were up almost 14% on last year
by Andy Mansell During the first four months of 2017, almost 14% more visitors from the UK visited the Valencian Community, leaving aside their post Brexit worries. The figures, part of a report issued this week by the Frontur, tourist authority, revealed an increase in the arrival of tourists from the United Kingdom, which rose by 13.6% up to April, French by 16.2%, Nordic by 19.6% and Italian by 17% % during the first quarter of the year. The same survey by Frontur shows that the arrivals by airport, estimated at about 1.7 million in the first quarter of the year have increased by 21.5% and by road (349,442) by 3.1%. In addition, travellers for leisure and vacation have increased by 19.3% and for business and professional reasons by 59.7%. Secretary for Valencian Tourism, Francesc Colmer, speaking after the figures were published, expressed his satisfaction at the growth in off season tourism.
“This growth in foreign tourists shows the real merit of our sector, for its ability to be competitive, to stand up and work all year round in the fight against seasonality " he said. He pointed out, “These results confirm that we are on the right path towards deseasonalisation and the capture of markets to increase growth". "In 2016 for the first time we approached eight million foreign tourists (7.8 million), recording our best ever figures and for this year everything points to the Valencian Community recording a historic high in international tourism, with 8.5 million foreign tourists. " Other data issued from the Frontur survey shows that the Valencian Community received a total of 748,536 foreign tourists, 16.4% more than the figure registered in the same month of 2016. And during the month of April alone, the increase of tourists from the United Kingdom was 18.5%, Germany (+ 9.9%) and Nordic countries (+8, 5%).

by Andy Mansell Members of a local military detachment in Cabo Roig, have recently joined municipal cleaners in a massive pre summer clean up on the rocky coastal areas of Aguamarina in Orihuela Costa. The operation needs to be conducted by experts, as ropes are required to clear debris from overhanging ridges and cliffs, therefore soldiers from the
Teniente Morejon division under the command of Major Vives are seconded for the difficult duties. Luisa Boné, city councillor for beaches of the city of Orihuela, thanked the cleaning team for performing the operation in particular the military detachment: “ Who always cooperate in an unselfish and helpful way for the benefit of all the municipality on this occasion to improve the appearance of an area which is very difficult to access
for cleaning.” said Ms Bone. She also pointed out that a weekly market takes place every Thursday and of course, a lot of rubbish accumulates on both the rocky coasts as well as in the adjacent micro-reserve and includes paper, plastic waste, wood residues and cans. The cleaning works for the elimination and the selective collection of any type of waste such as paper, plastic waste, wood residues, cans, etc.
Spain's anti-corruption prosecutor resigns Spain's anti-corruption prosecutor Manuel Moix has resigned after three months following criticism of his handling of certain cases — some involving members of the governing Popular Party — and revelations that his family held an offshore account in Panama. State prosecutor Jose Manuel Maza said Thursday that Moix had resigned for personal reasons. He said his office found that Moix ‘at no time acted illegally or inappropriately’ and saw no reason to fire him despite the political and media uproar of recent weeks. Opposition parties showed unusual unity in reprimanding Moix, Maza and Spain's justice minister last month for allegedly hindering anti-corruption investigations. The government steadfastly defended Moix but revelations that he held offshore company shares were seen to be the last straw, even though it was not illegal.

Brit fugitives found hiding in metal shed
The British couple had been living in a corrugated metal shed
by Andy Mansell A British couple, formerly of Mallorca, on the run from police for selling their underage daughters to a friend for sex, have been captured living in a container shed on a farm in Southern Spain. The man and woman, aged 54 and 59, had been living in Mallorca but fled the island after their sentencing last year for giving out their children to a man they knew, in return for money. After spending months hunting the couple, for the offences dating back almost eight years, members of the Guardia Civil
found the them living in a small shed on the edge of a farm in the district of Cártama in the province of Malaga. The couple who had been on the run to avoid a prison sentence, identified by the police only as TLD 54 years old and BSD aged 59, both of British nationality. The fugitive pair were arrested under a European Arrest Warrant following their conviction for the sexual abuse of minors. Police believe they had been living in the shed for some time in order to evade justice. A spokesman for the Guardia Civil, issued a statement that said: “The facts go back to the year 2009 when the couple offered their
Elderly couple eaten by their own dogs in Mallorca
An elderly couple were eaten by their own dogs after dying at their home in Mallorca at least two months ago. The Spanish press reported that police believe the man died first and his wife, who suffered from Alzheimer’s and was unable to look after herself, died just days later. Both bodies showed signs of having been eaten by the dogs the couple kept at their remote country house outside the town of Llucmajor on the Balearic Island. The couple, who were both 75-years-old, kept five dogs at the property – three of whom survived having been eating their owner’s remains whilst the other two, who were tied up outside the property, died of starvation. The horrific scene was discovered last Tuesday by a child of the couple, who had stopped by the house after becoming worried as they were not answering telephone calls. The remains were in an advanced state of decomposition but initial investigations by the Guardia Civil suggest both husband and wife died of natural causes.

German crossbow stalker deported to prevent new attacks A German man who stalked celebrities and served eight years in a Spanish prison for attempted murder was deported to his home country on Monday. Arndt Meyer was placed on a flight immediately after his release from Estremera penitentiary in the Madrid region, where he was imprisoned for trying to kill young actress Sara Casasnovas with a crossbow in June 2009. Meyer was originally told he could enjoy a 30-day period in Spain before he legally had to leave the country, but authorities repealed this decision after the Spanish press revealed he kept a scrapbook filled with photographs of young actresses who could become his next targets. Meyer, who suffers from a personality disorder, was handed to German police by Spanish authorities on Monday. Meyer will be kept a close eye on by Interpol and his name will be added to a register of sex offenders. In Spain, investigators are now trying to determine how Meyer obtained the photographs while serving time. Meyer’s scrapbook was discovered in October. Prison authorities suspected that the he persisted in harassing Sara Casasnovas by telephone as she had reported night calls to her private number in 2015 and 2016. Following his conviction, Meyer was banned from contacting Casasnovas or approaching her until January 29, 2020.
Alicante toddler dies in balcony fall National police in Alicante City have ruled out foul play in the circumstances surrounding the death of a two and a half year old boy last Saturday evening. The toddler fell from the fourth floor balcony of an apartment belonging to a friend of his mother, where they had stayed overnight on Friday, to attend the graduation ceremony of the friend’s teenage daughter. The friend, 38, lives in the apartment with her eighteen year old daughter and ten year old son, who is diagnosed with autism. The boy had been in a play room with the ten year old, whilst his mother had been in the sitting room with the friend, when he ran through the apartment on to a balcony, containing a toy box. The boy is alleged to have climbed onto the box, whereupon, he lost his balance and fell four floors to his death below. Police are treating the death as a tragic accident, probably caused by the toddler’s unfamiliarity with his surroundings in the apartment. However, a police spokesperson also revealed that an hour and a half before the accident occurred, they had received a call complaining of items being thrown from the balcony of the same apartment, which is located in an area next to Alicante General hospital. On investigation, they discovered a skateboard belonging to the ten year old, which they adjudged to be the offending article, but the spokesman also said they are not linking this incident to the death of the boy. National police officers have interviewed all occupants of the house at the time of the accident, apart from the victim’s thirty seven year old mother, who was too upset to make a statement. The investigation remains open until the interview takes place within the next couple of days.

Female zookeeper killed by a tiger in Cambridge zoo by Tahnee Wright A female zookeeper who was killed by a tiger in Cambridge, England in what zoo officials called a ‘freak accident’ has been identified. Rosa King, 34, died on Monday at Hamerton Zoo after one of the zoo’s tigers reportedly entered an enclosure where Rosa was working and attacked her. Devastated family and friends have paid tribute to Rosa, who was a carnivore keeper at the zoo. Rosa's mother said of her daughter, ‘She wouldn't have done anything else, it's what she has always done, it's what she has always loved.’ Gary Chrisholm, a wildlife photographer who often visited the zoo, said that Rosa was an integral part of the park. ‘Rosa wasn’t just a keeper at Hamerton Zoo - she was Hamerton Zoo. Her passion for the animals in her care was exceptional though her favourites were undoubtedly the cheetahs, who she would refer to as her pride and joy,’ Chrisholm wrote on his Facebook. ‘I feel privileged to have known Rosa and been able to call her a friend.’ Emergency services were called to the park at around 11.15am on Monday following reports of a ‘serious incident’. A Magpas air ambulance was on the scene 20 minutes later and visitors were evacuated from the attraction just before midday. An East of England Ambulance Service paramedic crew and two rapid response vehicles also attended. The zoo said it appeared to have been a ‘freak accident’, as it remained closed amid an investigation. In a statement, the zoo said: ‘At no point during the incident did any animals escape their enclosures and at no point was public safety affected in any way.’ ‘All our thoughts and sympathies are with our colleagues,

Violent Romanian fugitive arrested A thirty-year-old Romanian man, wanted for violent crimes in Austria has been arrested in Torre Pacheco, by Guardia Civil officers investigating a case of assault, exhibitionism and sexual provocation towards under age children. The officers were originally looking for a man who had tried to rob a local restaurant in the town at gunpoint, but fled before managing to take cash from the till. However, shortly afterwards, they received a complaint from a resident in the town, who alleged a man who shared his flat had revealed his genitals to his under-age daughter, who also lived in the apartment and her friends. He followed the act of indecent exposure by using extreme sexually provocative behaviour, towards the girls, which resulted in the father confronting the Romanian to complain about his behavior. The two men entered into a heated argument and an ensuing fight in which the father received a blow to the face causing minor injuries. The Guardia Civil officers, realized the description of the assailant matched that of the person who had made the earlier attempted armed robber. On apprehending the man, they subsequently discovered, the suspect was on a list of wanted people on the Europol European police network, for violent crimes in Austria. The arrested man has been detained in custody and all the investigations have been made available to the Court of Instruction in San Javier.

Boy loses both legs on Madrid Metro A 13-year-old Morrocan boy lost both his legs from the tibia down on Sunday, after being run over by a Madrid Metro train on Line 1. Early investigations report the boy was riding between two carriages while the train was in motion. The incident took place at 8.00pm as the train pulled out of the Sierra de Guadalupe station, in the southeast of the city. Security camera footage shows that the train had already closed its doors and was leaving the station when the boy climbed onto the link between two of the carriages. Just several metres down, once the train was in a tunnel, the boy fell. The train driver was not aware of the situation and continued out of the tunnel, running over the boy in the process. Despite losing his legs, the boy managed to crawl off the tracks to safety - reaching a ventilation shaft and calling for help. A pedestrian on the street heard the boy’s calls and alerted the emergency services immediately. The boy was taken to La Paz hospital in a critical condition. Medical sources told Spanish press on Monday that the boy was still being treated.

Morocco to Spain migrants on increase by Andy Mansell The number of migrants using the perilous sea route across the Mediterranean from Morocco to Spain has more than tripled in a year, it has emerged. The surge in boat arrivals on the so-called Western Mediterranean route has prompted a series of rescue missions in recent weeks, including 34 refugees saved from a burning dinghy near an island between the two countries. More than 3,300 refugees crossed to Europe from the North African country in the first four months of this year - compared to just over a thousand in the same period in 2016 according to figures released last week. The increase in numbers on the Spain to Morocco route comes after the European Union struck a deal with Ankara to stem the flow of migrants crossing from Turkey to Greece. Following the agreement, just 7,043 made that crossing in the first five months of 2017 - compared to 156,267 in the same period last year. While the figures, from the UN's International Organisation for Migration, relate to sea crossings, many more refugees last year crossed into Europe by land from Turkey. Last Sunday, more than 30 migrants were rescued off the coast of Spain after their rubber speed boat caught fire, forcing them into the water in a dramatic moment caught on camera. The video tweeted by EU border agency Frontex shows the 34 migrants travelling on board a black boat Sunday when flames suddenly erupted at the back near the engine, and rapidly spread through the small vessel. The migrants, most of whom appeared to be wearing life

jackets, jumped into the water according to images caught on camera by a Portuguese air force plane helping Frontex with maritime surveillance, which threw them a small lifeboat and notified Spanish coastguards. Some were able to scramble onto the lifeboat while others held onto their sinking vessel, the coastguards said in a statement. A helicopter and several boats were dispatched to the area southwest of Alboran Island between Morocco and Spain. Tomas Garcia, a manager at the coastguard centre in Spain's southeastern Almeria province who has 24 years experience
coordinating rescues was quoted as saying in the statement that this was one of the most complex his centre had seen. The migrants, whose nationalities were not disclosed, were finally taken safe and sound to the port of Motril in southern Spain. Last week, Spain's maritime rescue service saved 157 migrants from five small boats attempting to cross the Mediterranean. The crossing to Spain has accounted for 51 deaths so far this year - more than the Eastern Mediterranean Route from Turkey to Greece which, in the same period in 2016, saw 376 deaths.

Mother and father behind bars for abusing newborn baby by Tahnee Wright The Provincial Court of Murcia sentenced a mother and father to 4 years in prison this week after finding them guilty of child abuse. In two horrifying episodes of abuse, the pair fractured the femur, tibia and fibula of their baby boy – who was only a few months old. The events occurred in the family home between November 2013 and January 2014. In the first incident, the baby suffered
minor injuries to various parts of his body – such as his cheekbones, forehead, nose, lip and ankle. The second incident saw the baby suffer serious injuries, having to stay in hospital for a two-week period thereafter to recover from a fractured femur and left tibia and fibula. The court condemned both the mother and father as perpetrators of child abuse despite the pair pleading not guilty – claiming the injuries were caused by the baby himself with a rattle and later when he fell from his crib because one of the bars was broken.
Woman cut from car
Firefighters in Torrevieja had to cut a 56-year-old Russian woman out of her car on Wednesday following an accident on Avenida de Diego Ramirez. The accident occurred at around 11.35am when a hire car, driven by a British driver, collided laterally with the woman’s vehicle. The impact of the collision drove the woman’s driver-side door nearly 20 centimetres into her car – boxing her in. Firefighters had to use special equipment and cut the frame of the car. The woman did not suffer any serious injuries.
Man arrested for raping 13-year-old in Sangonera la Verde A 22-year-old Ecuadorian/ Spanish man was arrested last week for raping a 13-yearold girl in Sangonera la Verde. The detainee and the victim met through Instagram and Facebook about a month ago. They recently agreed to meet and the detainee went to the victim’s house when her parents were out. At the victim’s house, the detainee raped her, leaving her in severe pain and bleeding heavily. The victim’s parents returned and took her to the Hospital Virgen of La Arrixaca, none the wiser to what had happened. The victim was operated on for an internal tear and doctors alerted the parents to what had happened, also calling for forensic examination and attendance of
the Guardia Civil. Officers of the Guardia Civil went to the victim’s house to collect biological samples in order to arrest the rapist. Searching for the rapist, officers were unable to find him at any known address, nor were any of his relatives located in Spain. He was finally found in the San Andres bus station in Murcia, where he was arrested. The rapist was held in custody and officers found that he had already been arrested for sexually assaulting his girlfriend approximately three years ago and has a criminal record for crimes of threat and coercion. The rapist is also charged with theft after he stole cash from his victim’s home.

Mar Menor coast still not fit for blue flags, say auditors by Tahnee Wright As 16 beaches on the Mar Menor coast had their blue flags removed recently, members of the tourism sector and regional government argued that the analysis was not current (it was carried out in 2016) and had it been carried out recently, the blue flags would not have been removed. The Association of Environmental and Consumer Education - responsible in Spain for granting the blue flags - confirmed this to be true, which instilled hope on the Mar Menor that the flags might be reinstated before the summer season. However, a recent audit has reported that if the analysis had been carried out recently, the beaches would still not meet the quality requirements established for obtaining the blue flags. The Pacto por el Mar Menor (Pact for the Mar Menor) have denounced the audit and addressed the Director General of Water of the Ministry of Environment – claiming that the central government have not yet provided essential documents to allow the problems on the Mar Menor to be addressed and calling for a "comprehensive solution to the pollution� on the Mar Menor. Los Alcazares had six blue flags removed: La Concha, Carrion, El Espejo, Las Palmeras, Los Narejos and Manzanares. Similarly, San Javier had five blue flags removed: Castillico, Paseo de Colon, Mistral, Barnuevo and Pedruchillo - only
Ensenada of Esparto keeps its flag. San Pedro del Pinatar had five blue flags removed at La Puntica and Villananitos with El Mojon being saved.
Cartagena had its flags removed at Cala del Pino, Mar de Cristal, Playa Paraiso and Playa Honda and the two beaches of Islas Menores had theirs removed, too.

Gender abuse in Spain on the increase by Andy Mansell Cases of gender violence in Spain have risen for the second successive year according to an alarming report issued yesterday. The largest increase in complaints of violence was against men over the age of 75, which could imply that more elderly women are feeling more confident about reporting abuse to the authorities. The figures show that in 2016, more than 28,000 women throughout the country received some form of official protection from police and government authorities. There were 28,281 officially registered female victims of gender-related violence in Spain in 2016, a 2.4% rise from the previous year, according to the country’s National Statistics Institute (INE). Of these women, all of whom were given some form of official protection, 44 were killed by their spouse, or ex-partner according to provisional figures from the Health Ministry. The rise in the number of officially recorded victims has grown for the second year in a row, following a drop between 2012 and 2014. Nearly half of the victims of gender violence who had been assigned precautionary measures by a court (48.6%) were between 30 and 44 years old, according to the Statistics on Gender Violence and Domestic Violence report released on Wednesday. By age group, the biggest increase in 2016 was among women 75 and older (14.6%), followed by the 40–44 age group (8.5%). In relative terms, however, the rate of abuse is highest in

the 25-29 age range with three out of every 1,000 requiring some form of official protection. In the case of abused teens, complaints fell by 10.7%: there were 569 victims last year compared with 637 in 2015. The most significant rise in complaints was against men aged 75 and older (12.9%). In the majority of cases (23.3%), across all age groups, the victim and the abuser were married.
There was also a 7% rise in the number of convictions, up from 24,265 to 25,959, while acquittals dropped from 6,768 to 6,288. In seven out of 10 cases, the conviction was handed down in under a year. Under Spanish law, gender violence consists of any physical or psychological aggression by a man against a woman who he has a relationship with.

Stolen autographs from Serbia up for auction in Spain by Tahnee Wright A dozen autographs of world leaders allegedly stolen from commemoration books in Serbia following the death of Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito have been put up for auction in Malaga this weekend, causing Serbia to seek help from Interpol to recover them. The autographs alleged to have been stolen include then US vice president George H.W. Bush, the last Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe. The autographs signed off posthumous tributes to Tito, who led socialist Yugoslavia from the end of World War Two until his death in 1980. They were written into commemoration books during official visits by the leaders to Yugoslavia in the years that followed. Following a media report that the autographs had been stolen, Belgrade's Museum of Yugoslav History launched an
investigation and established that pages were missing from the tribute books that were on display in a mausoleum that is part of the museum's complex. ‘We reported the case to police and they will inform Interpol... We are waiting for a response,’ museum official Ana Radic told the Spanish press. ‘The theft appears to have taken place before the museum took over the running of the mausoleum in 2015’, she explained. ‘We also contacted the auction house and asked them to cancel the auction and provide us with additional information on the documents so we can confirm their authenticity’ and recover them, Radic said. Minor earthquake in Guardamar
The town of Guardamar del Segura, in Alicante province was hit by a minor earthquake of 2.4 on the Richter Scale last week. It was said to be at 11 kilometres underground, deep enough not to cause an impact, and was registered at exactly 22.41 on Monday halfway between Guardamar and the beach town of Santa Pola. At this magnitude, damage is extremely rare and any registered would be very minor, limited to a cup falling over or lightweight items falling off shelves. But it would normally be felt, and in fact, emergency services received calls from Dolores, Elche and Rojales. The quake may have been felt further afield, but as yet this has not been reported, and no aftershocks were felt, meaning any that came would have been below 2 on the Richter scale. Minor tremors of this nature are common in the south-east of Spain and in the Canary Islands – with the exception of the Lorca (Murcia) quake in May 2011 in which 11 people died, the worst in Spain in over a century, the vast majority of the country’s earthquakes tend to result in little more than a minor wobble.
Auctions’, Richard Davie, told the Spanish press a colleague managing the sale ‘has been in touch with the relevant authorities and is complying with their requests for further information regarding the documents’. ‘In the rare event that the ownership of documents is brought into question then we are always willing to assist the relevant parties in further investigations and if necessary, withdraw documents from the auction until the rightful owner can be established,’ Davie told the Spanish press by email. Among the other autographs that have gone missing are those of India's first female prime minister Indira Gandhi, assassinated Swedish premier Olof Palme, Cambodia's king Norodom Sihanouk, late Syrian president Hafez al-Assad and Romanian communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu.

Reach Out for fashion The recent free ‘Reach Out’ fundraising Fashion Show at the Marina Bar Torrevieja raised a fabulous 1343 euros for the charity. by Andy Mansell Organisers David & Lorraine Whitney, volunteers and managers of the ‘Reach Out’ charity shop in Calle Dona Sinforosa, 8, Torrevieja, were thrilled with the amount raised on the day, following the hard work they and their team put in to ensure another success. The afternoon was very well supported yet again and the rush to buy the charity clothing, shoes and bags again resembled the opening few hours of the Harrods January Sale with everybody rushing to obtain a bargain. On hand to help were Rita and Dave Monaghan of the Marina Bar who were kept busy all afternoon together with their own team of hard workers, all ensuring the event ran smoothly. Many other stalls contributed to the event and therefore the charity, with cake wizard Beverley donating a cake as a raffle prize too. Money donations from the stalls brought in 258 euros, so thanks were extended to Christina, George, Dorothy, Mr and Mrs. Porter, Eileen, Beryl and Ian Austin amongst others.

Mazarron FC win but lose out on play offs Despite a late goal which gave them victory on the day, Mazarron failed to qualify for the Play-Off Final losing the tie 2-1 on aggregate. Mazarron started at a good pace and made the early running but were forced to make a substitution after only 10 minutes when Andreo was brought down with a heavy tackle. Los Garres were happy to defend and hang on to their two goal advantage but Juan Pedro in the Mazarron goal was then forced to make an excellent save to keep his team in the game. Mazarron continued to press forward with some excellent crosses into the box but, too often, headers were misplaced and the danger averted, The home side soon took control again at the start of the second half encouraged by the vociferous home support. They were rewarded with a penalty when Javi Torrano was fouled in the box following a Marcos free kick but the usually dependable Juan Andreo’s spot kick was too precise and saved by the Los Garres keeper. Los Garres employed some dubious time wasting tactics and there was a spate of yellow cards for both teams. Miguel was then sent off for Mazarron along with a Los Garres player before Mazarron had a real chance as the Los Garres keeper was completely out of position but none of the Mazarron players were able to take advantage. Just as hopes were fading, a Mazarron corner was cleared to the feet of Chino who made no mistake to give Mazarron the lead after 87 minutes. Despite an added six minutes of injury time, Mazarron were unable to score another goal which would have taken the tie into extra time and promotion hopes were over for another season. More than five hundred euros was raised at a recent charity night for the Royal British legion Torrevieja Branch. The always popular, Woody entertained the crowd at the Restaurante Don Calveto, in Torrevieja at a great night that was enjoyed by all, and raised 508.20 euros. Organisers Marlene brown and Joan Rampton, have already arranged their next fundraiser, which they are holding at Quesada Fish and Chips on Wednesday June 14, with all proceeds going to the Torrevieja Stroke Support Charity. Entertainment for the evening is provided by “Best of British”, a new group made up of four very experienced and talented musicians, who will be performing an evening of hits from the 60's and 70's. The cost of the event is just 10 euros for a 2 course meal and superb entertainment, with more than half of the allocated tickets already sold. by Andy Mansell Although bright sunshine and blue skies greeted SAMM competitors and officials, when the awoke for the third race day of the Spring 2017 season on Sunday may 7, there was a little concern about the lack of wind. However, by the time the first race was due to start, the breeze had upped it’s game to an acceptably gentle 7 knots. The two Sailfish 18’s were first away at 11.45am followed 10 minutes later by one two man and five single handed dinghies for the planned four lap race. Both the Sailfish maintained their lead for the first lap but were passed by three of the dinghies during the second lap, but owing to the conditions the pace was slow and unexciting so the Race Officer shortened the race to three laps. However the wind was up to 9 knots by the start of the second race at 2.30pm and gradually increased to 12 knots, which produced the excitement missing in the first race.

The Sailfish were again away first. Mistral got the best start but was soon overtaken by Sirocco. The Laser 2000 and RS Quba Kiwi had the best start of the six dinghies and these two and the Topaz Duo were soon fighting for the lead. Skipper 12 was struggling especially when trying to tack to get through the gate and lost so much time in the process that she retired after three laps and the finish was difficult, requiring a tack to finish up-wind. The RS Quba Kiwi got it wrong and hit the finish mark requiring a 360° penalty and re-finish and the RS Quba
Lola almost did the same as did the Sailfish Mistral. A fair amount of fun ensued when the Sailfish Sirocco twice dropped their boat hook overboard when trying to pick up their mooring under sail because the outboard would not start. Thankfully it was recovered both times by some skilful manoeuvring and they eventually were safely secured. After the handicaps were applied the RS Quba Kiwi with Tug Wilson at the helm was found to have won both races despite the mishap at the finish of the second.
The outdoor municipal swimming pool of Torrevieja in the Ciudad Deportiva opened its doors on Thursday. The swimming pool will be open throughout the day from Monday to Sunday, 10.00am – 2.00pm and in the evenings from Monday to Saturday, 4.00pm – 7.30pm. General admission is €3, reduced to €2 for swimmers over 60-years-old, under 15-years-old, disabled swimmers and families. A discount of 25 per cent is offered when purchasing 20 admission tickets (€40). Children under four swim for free and swimming clubs can request exemption. The swimming pool will remain open until September 30.

by Andy Mansell A recent race night, held by the small, but friendly Bar Kenz and their generous customers, raised almost 1600 euros for the Spanish Cancer charity AECC, via local fundraisers Maria and the Pink Ladies. Owners Ken and Jan from bar
Kenz, organised the race evening, including a raffle and charity tin collection, plus donating a massive bottle of vodka as a prize. The winner of the vodka, kindly donated it back, so they decided to auction it off for the charity, with the price eventually reaching a staggering 250€ paid by CJ Builders.
That massive boost took the eventual total on the night to 1567€, which will be handed over to AECC. Anyone who would like to book an appointment with the AECC for a mammogram, smear test or prostate test please call 965 329 841, between the hours of 10.00am and 1.00pm on Mondays to Fridays.

When the actor Roger Moore passed away on May 23 I felt a personal sense of loss. The thespian is perhaps best known for his part as James Bond; others will relate better to his role in The Saint TV series. As a well-travelled habitué of North, East, South and West Africa my evocations of Roger Moore centre on the Wild Geese movie. Released in 1978, the film is a reminder of the cynical and ruthless methods of rich and powerful men who kill without blinking a reptilian eyelid. The Wild Geese was inspired by South African author Daniel Carney’s unpublished novel The Thin White Line. The film’s title, its flag and shoulder patch, was modelled on Ireland’s 17th century legendary army in exile. Rhodesia and Swaziland provide the backdrop to the parachute drop carried out by the 49 hired dogs of war. The mostly British mercenaries had been contracted by banker Sir Edward Matheson to re-install a popular African president. If successful, the overthrown president awaiting execution will be released by the mercenaries. It is a tough assignment as the deposed president Julius Limbani is held in a remote garrison. He is guarded by several hundred Cuban and notorious Simba tribesmen. The soldiers of fortune are led by Colonel Alan Faulkner played by Welsh born Richard Burton, whose role was well chosen. The success of the Wild Geese movie is likely due to its stark realism. Those watching the movie felt it was not so much a film as a documentary. The movie’s director, Andrew McLaglen, will certainly have learned much from the epic documentary, Africa Adios. The part
played by Colonel Alan Falkner (Richard Burton) was modelled on Irish-born mercenary Colonel Mike Hoare. Roger Moore assumed the role of ex-pilot Shawn Fynn. The part is pivotal and the actor’s good humour whilst under fire is legendary. The movie recounts the breath-taking exploits of the mercenary band of brothers during the white knuckle ride rescue attempt. Irish actor and former drifter Richard Harris (Rafer Janders) was the only one of the main actors who did not have military experience. After successfully rescuing deposed President Limbani the triumphant mercenaries wait on a remote airstrip for the arrival of a rescuing transport aircraft. Disaster: The corrupt banker, who bankrolled the rescue, has meantime cut a deal for mineral assets with the incumbent president. Limbani is no longer needed. The rescuing aircraft is diverted and the mostly White desperadoes are abandoned deep in the African bush. Their chances of survival are slim; the movie chronicles their desperate plight and escape. Roger Moore played the part well but there’s no escaping the Grim Reaper.

The newspaper sections I refuse to read and have done for several years now, are the financial pages. The tables, graphs and forecasts leave me dizzy and the so called experts have got it wrong so many times now, I am puzzled as to why anybody would listen to a word they say. But it’s the complicated figures that turn me off as much as anything, because ever since my secondary school days I have built a mental block to all that stuff. Primary school was fine, I coped with fractions and then decimals and even learned how to convert one to the other. As for mental arithmetic, I was a whizz and have been ever since. It was a breeze. I had no problem with other subjects and passed my 11-Plus. Well almost. Then came the Big School and everything changed. I found myself in the selective stream for those who were border line cases, and for which there was a grammar syllabus which included a new word – ‘Maths’. In the primary school it was simply termed ‘Arithmetic’ and even earlier, ‘Sums’. Why change the name? But I was soon to find out. The first Geometry lesson was a blur. This wasn’t sums, this was drawing weird shapes with even weirder names – rhombuses, trapezoids and parallelograms. Then there were obtuse and acute angles . . . who even gave a monkies? It didn’t help that the history teacher had called me obtuse. How could I be described as someone between 90 and 180 degrees? Then came Algebra, oh boy. It had taken me an age in infant school to learn by rote the twelve times tables and then get to grips with addition, subtraction and long division – all using numbers. But I had learned them all and was proud of myself. Now this. Suddenly letters of the alphabet were part of the equation, literally, because ‘equation’ was another alien name that had been slipped into the vocabulary. I understood about roots, but how could you find the cube or square root of a jumble of letters and numbers? And why bother? By the time they hit me with trigonometry, or trig as the smart alecs’ of the class smugly called it, with its sines, cosines and tangents, I was done. I carry the mental scar to this day and the terror of that dreaded beast called mathematics.

But perhaps he was more human than we gave him credit for? Ruth suffers with insecurities which closely reveals human emotions and concludes that she, just like all the other clones are modelled from trash. Perhaps a junkie or a prostitute, a tramp or a convict? “If you want to look for possibles, then you look in the gutter. You look in rubbish bins. Look down the toilet, that’s where you’ll find where we came from.” Who tampered with nature and created people with souls who were capable of experiencing love but not grief? Their pain and suffering was real to save the lives of others as their bodies shut down for good. Clones?? It will leave a lasting impression.

Amazing as it seems, I haven’t yet written about the difference between “por” and “para” in Spanish. Considering the fact that I’m getting near the two hundred mark of what will eventually become a fivevolume series of “Step by Step Spanish” articles, that’s quite an achievement, especially as it’s a question that comes up frequently in class. So, I’m now going to compare and contrast the uses of POR and PARA in three ways, according to three different concepts. Before you throw up your hands in horror, just think for a while about how you would explain the use of the words “for” and “to” to someone who didn’t speak much English. Believe me, that would be much more complicated than what we are going to do now. Reason v. purpose Firstly, we use “por” to express the reason for something and “para” to express the purpose for something. When we ask “¿Por qué?” (Why?), we are actually asking “For what reason?”, that is, what is the cause of something. There is another question which is “¿Para qué?” which also means “Why?” but in the sense of “what for?”, that is, “For what purpose?” “Por” on its own in this sense can be translated as “because of”. “¿Por qué llegas tarde?” (Why are you late?) “Por el tráfico” (Because of the traffic) – in other word expressing the reason for, or cause of, our lateness. “Para” on the other hand expresses “purpose”. “¿Para qué usas esta herramienta?” (What do you use this tool for?) “Para cortar madera” (To cut wood) – in other words, for the
purpose of cutting word. Exchange v. one way The second concept is the contrast between “exchange” on the one hand, and something going in one direction, i.e. not being exchanged, on the other. This is easier to understand with examples. “Compré un libro por 20 euros” (I bought a book for – in exchange for – 20 euros). “Compré un libro para mi marido” (I bought a book for – as a present for - my husband). Period of time v. time deadline Thirdly we have a time-related concept. “Por” refers to a period of time whereas “para” refers to a time deadline. Spain's inflation slowed to a five-month low in May, flash data from the statistical office INE showed Tuesday. Consumer prices advanced 1.9 percent year-onyear in May, slower than the 2.6 percent increase registered in April. This was the slowest since December 2016, when prices gained 1.6 percent. At the same time, harmonized consumer price inflation came in at 2 percent versus 2.6 percent in April. Month-on-month, consumer prices slid 0.1 percent, in contrast to a 1 percent rise in the previous month. The harmonized index of consumer prices remained flat in May.

Indian Prime Minister arrives in Spain Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday urged Spanish firms to invest in India, saying that the fast-growing country offers ‘many opportunities’ in areas ranging from tourism to energy. ‘India is an enormous country and it offers many opportunities to Spanish firms in all sectors,’ he said as he arrived at Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's official residence in Madrid for talks. ‘I invite Spanish firms to participate in our development,’ he added. Prime Minister Modi, who arrived in Spain late on Tuesday from Germany, his first stop on a four-nation Europe tour, was scheduled to meet King Felipe VI later on Wednesday. He was also supposed to meet Spanish business leaders as part of his push to increase foreign investment in India, the world's fastestgrowing major economy. ‘Spanish firms are global leaders in sectors that are a priority for us. We want to attract tourism, infrastructure, energy and defence firms,’ Prime Minister Modi said in an interview published in the Spanish press. Spain is India's seventh largest trading partner in the European Union. Two-way trade totalled €4.72 billion in 2016, an 8.5 per cent increase over the previous year, of which Spanish exports made up nearly €1.26 billion. The number of Spanish firms that operate in India has risen to over 230 currently from just 70 in 2008. ‘Our bilateral relations are becoming more and more intense. I hope this visit spurs deeper ties between our two countries,’ Rajoy said. It is the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Spain since Narasimha Rao came to the country in 1992.

Ariana Grande’s ‘One Last Time’ hits number one in the iTunes chart as fans purchase the track in tribute to victims of Manchester bombing. The singer, 23, performed the track on the night 22 people were killed in the foyer of the MEN Arena when terrorist Salman Abedi detonated a nail bomb. Fans started a petition to get the song, which was released in 2015, to the top of the charts in tribute to those who died in the explosion. It has since claimed top spot ahead of Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s Despacito and Liam Payne’s Strip That Down. Reports have claimed that the US singer, 23, will be back on UK turf for the fundraising gig as early as next Sunday, June 4. TMZ states that Grande will headline the show, with her manager Scooter Braun currently in the process of booking other acts to join the line-up. I hosted Benidorm Pink Weekend just last week and was honoured to do a charity balloon launch in memorial of those tragic victims. Cartagena all set for a summer of ‘Torres Nights’
This summer will see a series of open air concerts in the beautiful Torres park at the foot of the Castillo de la Concepción in Cartagena City. Performances are scheduled from June 8, throughout the summer until September 9, and will feature the very best of Spanish music from rock to 80’s pop, through to dance and popular music. Artists confirmed to appear on the ‘Noches del Torres’ are José Luis Perales, Fuel Fandango, Bebe, Marinah (of Ojos de Brujo), Invisible Dance, Los Rebeldes, Tenessee, Pica-Pica, Rosana, Ara Malikian, Jarabe de Palo and Nacha Pop. The artist will be grouped into weekends of music from similar genres on certain weekends, for instance on June 24 and June 25, when the nights will be named ‘Voices for equality’ and ‘Rock the Mar Menor Live’.
Proceeds from the latter, featuring a return to the 80’s with Invisible Dance, Los Rebeldes and Tennessee, will go towards heling with the regeneration of the Mar Menor salt lagoon. Concerts later in the month also include a children’s event with Pica Pica on June 25. July’s dates include singer-songwriter Rosana and August’s highlight is the internationally renowned virtuos violinist Ara Malikian. Whilst Nacha Pop, who has recently released a new album, will close the ‘Torres Nights’ shows on September 9. The events kick off on Saturday June 8, with perhaps the most well-known artist in the line up, with a long illustrious career, José Luis Perales. All the concerts will begin at 10.00pm, except for the PicaPica formation, which, being dedicated to a children's audi-
ence, will adapt to the schedules of the youngest and will start an hour earlier, at 9.00pm. Tickets range from 25 to 30 euros, with the exception of the José Luis Perales concert, which is 35 euros, and that of Pica-Pica at 12 euros. 'Rock and Mar Menor live', which costs 17 euros both of which will go to perform actions in the area for recovery and regeneration. The choir will perform hits from Les Miserables, My Fair Lady, Oliver, and West Side Story amongst many more under the baton of Nigel Hopkins, who ‘always manages to get the very best performances out of all the choir members’ in this charity concert supporting Orihuela Costa Community Care. Promising the ‘Sounds of Musicals’ concert to be even better than the ‘Andrew Lloyd Webber’ concerts, the show will also feature some exceptional solos from choir members who are making a big name for themselves as professional performers. Melody Makers International concerts are always accompanied by a live band. Mathew Hopkins and two other members of the band fly from the UK to accompany the choir and really make MMI concerts exceptionally special. Matthew, Director of Music at Nottingham Trent University, has established a national and international reputation as a choral and orchestral conductor, with many acclaimed performances across the UK and Europe. Get involved – the A.P.A.H. Dog Show The Carpa Municipal in Pilar de la Horadada will play host to the A.P.A.H. Dog Show on Sunday July 9. The event was born with the aim of promoting the adoption of domestic animals that are looking for new homes. A.P.A.H. wants to thank the families who choose to adopt dogs and cats and also appeal to all citizens in the struggle against mistreatment and animal abandonment. The show will have lots of interesting activities to get involved in and thanks to the contribution of local businesses and establishments, a charity raffle will be organised. There will be a bar service and plenty of stalls to peruse. With the event being a little way off, yet, A.P.A.H. are looking for more local businesses and establishments who might like to donate to the raffle or hold a stall at the show. Most people when they plan to get fitter, often think the only option is to join a gym, which is a good idea in theory, but very often, after the initial couple of visits, the novelty wears thin and the gym membership card sits in the wallet or purse unused, or worse still gathering dust in a drawer. Well, the good news is, you don’t need an expensive gym membership to get into shape this summer, you can work out from the comfort and convenience of your own home, and you have a lot of options other than jumping on an exercise bike or treadmill. Here are a few useful and fairly simple tips to set up your home exercise routine without breaking the bank on equipment: CHOOSE A LOCATION Designate and declutter a spot in your home for your workouts. Don't automatically pick your basement or garage. If it's not an appealing space, you won't want to spend a lot of time there. Look for an area near where you often sit, along the lines of an empty corner or a spot near
your TV, for instance, could be perfect. Seeing your exercise place may inspire you to get up and move. You don't want it to be out of sight, out of mind. BUY THE NECESSITIES You don't need a lot of fancy gear as for under €80, you can buy some basics, such as an exercise mat, stability ball, resistance bands, and a few dumbbells. Or try to make your own list, based on what you want to do. What equipment do you need to support your goals? 40 per cent lifetime risk of hand arthritis Osteoarthritis, a painful condition in which the tissue between bones wears down, frequently affects people in old age and a new study finds that as many as 4 in 10 people may develop the condition in their hands. Among women, researchers found the lifetime risk was 47 per cent while for men it was about 25 per cent. Obese people also had 11 per cent higher lifetime risk than those who were not obese. Hand osteoarthritis can cause disability and problems with daily living, but is not often a subject of research, the study team writes in the journal Arthritis and Rheumatology. Past research shows the lifetime risk for arthritis of the knee to be 45 per cent and 25 per cent for the hip, they write. ‘These findings indicate that symptomatic hand osteoarthritis is very common and affects a substantial proportion of the population in their lifetimes,’ lead author and epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Jin Qin told Reuters Health. The researchers analysed data from a study of more than 2,000 people over age 45. The study collected data between 1999 and 2010, using selfreports of arthritis symptoms and X-ray images of the participants’ hands. Based on this group, researchers estimated the proportion of people who will develop osteoarthritis in at least one hand by age 85 to
be 39.8 per cent. White people were at greater risk, at 41 per cent, for hand osteoarthritis than black people, with 29 per cent. Obese people had a lifetime risk of 47 per cent, compared to 36 per cent among the non-obese. ‘Some people with hand osteoarthritis have minimal or no symptoms. But for many, symptomatic hand osteoarthritis greatly affects their everyday lives, with few options for improving their symptoms,’ Dr. Fiona Watt, a research lecturer and honorary consultant rheumatologist at the University of Oxford told Reuters Health. The pain can vary and tends to be worse the more people use their hands, flaring up during daily activity like carrying heavy shopping bags or typing on keyboards or phones, said Watt, who
was not involved in the study. ‘Our hands are so important and we need to look after them,’ Watt said, adding that doing aerobic exercise and watching our weight can help protect against all types of osteoarthritis. ‘We know that injury can increase the risk of osteoarthritis,’ Watt said. ‘Although we can’t always prevent hand injuries, wearing supporting and protective gloves in occupations with heavy use of the hand is important.’ Preventing injuries and maintaining a healthy weight may lower the risk of osteoarthritis, Qin said. ‘Earlier diagnosis allows earlier use of interventions (e.g. physical/occupational therapy), that may help manage symptoms, maintain better function and improve quality of life.’

The layout of a vegetable garden can make or break its success, so it's important to do it right. Here are simple tips and ideas to help you get started on your own vegetable garden.

How to clean your BBQ After you’ve wined and dined your family and friends, it is understandable that the last thing you want to do is spend time cleaning your BBQ. Cleaning your BBQ does not need to be a difficult or timeconsuming task, so we’ve compiled some tips to make your BBQ cleaning a breeze. Start by cleaning the cooking grates: 1. Leave your BBQ to cool down for around 30 minutes after switching it off and then if sufficiently cool, tackle the cooking grates, removing them from the BBQ itself. 2. Use a spray bottle of BBQ grate cleaner or a simple mix of soapy water to coat the surface of your cooking grates to degrease and clean. You might want to leave this for a few minutes to soak in to any burnt-on food and soften before brushing. 3. Once soaked, you can use a BBQ brush to get rid of those stubborn bits of food stuck to the grate and brush until completely clean. Now all you need to do is leave this outside to dry and the arduous work is done! Cleaning your gas BBQ: 1. Once you’ve cleaned your BBQ grate, it’s time to move on to the appliance itself. Chelsea Flower Show in full swing Britain's most prestigious flower show has been in full swing this week with hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of floral delights. The highlight of Britain's horticultural calendar, the annual Chelsea Flower Show in London's sprawling Royal Hospital complex features a host of elaborate gardens designed by experts and is famous for its unusual installations. The event is also one of the staples of the city's spring social calendar, with celebrities including media mogul Rupert Murdoch and Oscarwinning actress Judi Dench in attendance this year. The Royal family are also perpetual visitors - the Queen made her annual visit this week and the Duchess of Cambridge was also pictured browsing the blossoms. The show ends tomorrow (Saturday) and organisers said it was expected to attract around 165,000 visitors.

EU free Wi-Fi for European towns with no internet coverage
European Union institutions agreed this week to set aside €120 million in order to provide free Wi-Fi by 2020 to up to 8,000 municipalities in the EU in areas with no internet coverage. The initiative will be funded from the current €1 trillion EU budget, which runs from 2014 to 2020. Towns will have to apply to get the funds. The three EU institutions - the European Commission, the council of EU governments and the parliament - decided that funds for the free WiFi initiative will come from a limited review of the seven-year EU budget. This political compromise will need to be followed by a technical agreement over how the EU budget’s resources should be used to fund the new project. The EU budget cannot be increased, but funds can be partly shifted. New resources could also come from fines to companies or other one-off revenues.

British Airways back up and running British Airways said it expected to deliver a full schedule of flights from London’s Gatwick and Heathrow airports on Tuesday after its computer network recovered from an outage which left 75,000 passengers stranded over the weekend. ‘Our IT systems are back up and running and our operation continues to run as planned today with a full flight schedule at Heathrow and Gatwick,’ British Airways said in a statement.

Facebook wins German court appeal A court in Germany has ruled that the parents of a dead teenage girl have no right to access their daughter’s Facebook account. The 15-year-old was killed by a train in 2012 and her parents were trying to establish if she had committed suicide. They had sought access to her chat messages and posts in order to find out whether she had been bullied, but Facebook argued that opening up the account would compromise the privacy of the teenager’s contacts. A first court in Berlin had ruled in favour of the family, saying that the contents of the girl’s account could be seen as similar to letters and diaries, which “can be inherited regardless of their content”. But an appeals court has now ruled in favour of Facebook, saying that a contract existed between the girl and the social media company and that it ended with her death. The parents announced that they may yet launch a further appeal against the verdict. Facebook has recently faced increased scrutiny in Germany, especially over its handling of hate speech and fake news on the platform. The company earlier this year announced the introduction of new tools in Germany to combat fabricated stories. Meanwhile, German officials last month approved plans to levy heavy fines on social media firms if they fail to remove inappropriate comments and content quickly.

Facebook has picked up on the fact that everyone thinks its security settings are confusing. So, it has rolled out a redesign based on user research to bring some muchneeded clarity to its security page. Some of the changes include bringing important tools, like trusted contacts and twofactor authentication, to the top of the security and login page in a new “recommended” section that’s customized
for you based on your current settings. And about that twofactor authentication option -- it’s no longer called “login approvals,” because it took research for Facebook to realise it should just call it what it is. They’ve also grouped similar tools together under single headings and simplified the “Where you’re logged in” section, making it much easier to see where, when and on what devices you were last on Facebook.
Overall, the changes make it easier to navigate through all of Facebook’s security options no matter your level of tech awareness. And this follows an update of the website’s Privacy Basics section in January, which added more interactive guides to help you tailor your settings. To access to the revamped security section, click the little arrow at the top right of your screen, select Settings, and then Security + Login from the menu on the left.

Motor Ombudsman contacted in record numbers The Motor Ombudsman, the automotive dispute resolution provider, has reported a record level of contacts to its dispute resolution service during the first four months of this year, compared to the same period in 2016. The body’s legally-trained and fully-impartial adjudicators, who look to conclude unresolved disputes quickly and fairly between consumers and its accredited businesses, which include thousands of garages across the UK, 39 vehicle manufacturers and 11 warranty providers, received over 11,300 contacts relating to its four Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI)-approved Motor Industry Codes of Practice. This equates to a 45% rise versus the same period in 2016. Providing information and assistance to businesses accounted for a further 484 enquiries to April, a 231% jump compared to a year earlier. The Vehicle Sales Code of Practice, which provides detailed guidelines for the sale of both new and used cars, as well as the supply of finance and warranties, saw the highest level of contacts out of any Code in The Motor Ombudsman’s portfolio. As awareness of the Code amongst UK motorists has continually grown following its introduction last September, the number of contacts has averaged over 50 per day since the start of the year, and reached a monthly record of 1,259 last month. Similarly, The Motor Ombudsman witnessed the highest ever volume in a single four-week period, with April recording 3,343 contacts, rising above the monthly average of 3,259 seen during the first quarter of 2017. The largest source of customer concerns brought to the attention of The Motor Ombudsman since April have related to the quality of a used or new vehicle at the time of purchase, the standard of work carried out, and warranties. An average of 95% of the contacts received every month are successfully concluded without the need for a case to be raised thanks to The Motor Ombudsman’s highly experienced adjudication team. In addition, the volume of cases requiring a legally binding final decision from its in-house ombudsman has ranged between 7% to 14% for the first four months of the year. Holly McAllister, Head of Customer Service and Quality at The Motor Ombudsman, said: “Everincreasing awareness amongst consumers and automotive businesses of the value that The Motor Ombudsman offers has resulted in a significant uplift in the level of contacts that we have received since the start of 2017. The arrival of the Vehicle Sales Code has equally meant that we can now formally adjudicate on issues relating to the sale of both of new and used cars.” Holly adds: “Case volumes as a proportion of contacts remain low which demonstrates the great efforts that all parties are going to in order to resolve any disagreements before needing formal adjudication which is very encouraging for all involved.”

Dashcams help in fight against dangerous drivers Dashcams were originally launched to protect drivers against fraudulent insurance claims and to determine who’s at fault for accidents, but today they’re being used to help dwindling police forces catch dangerous drivers in the act. North Wales Police became the first force in the UK to create a system for the public to send video footage of appalling driving caught on camera by dashcams, helmet cameras and mobile phones. And according to auto magazine AutoExpress, over 100 clips have been uploaded to the new database and 80 penalties have been issued in the first six months of Operation Snap. The police have been using the public’s video footage to convict dangerous and offending drivers for some time, with the first person jailed using dashcam video evidence in December 2015. However, police forces - which have been hit with tightening budgets and fewer traffic cops in recent years - have struggled to vet all the clips sent to them due to limited resources. North Wales Police calculated that it takes up to 15 hours of police time to charge offenders under old rules that meant they had to treat footage in a similar way to eye-witness accounts, including interviews and masses of paperwork time it doesn’t have with fewer staff members on its books than seven years ago. But after finding a loophole in how speed camera clips are used as the only evidence needed to catch limit-breaking motorists, it decided to apply the same process to the footage captured of dangerous drivers on dashcams to reduce charge times. As a result, the process takes closer to 15 minutes, with clips being uploaded by members of the public with a short description on North Wales Police’s website. Officers can then review each video case and - as with speeding fines - send a driving penalty notice to the guilty party who can choose to accept it or dispute it in court. All public-generated video footage can now be used by North Wales Police to target offences including dangerous driving, driving without due care and attention, contravening solid white lines, mobile phone use, improper control of vehicle and contravening red traffic lights.
The force is also calling on vulnerable road users, including horse riders and cyclists, to send in their footage of motorists driving too close to them. At the launch of Operation Snap last year, assistant chief constable Jeremy Vaughan said: “The operation will enable our communities to help us assist in a key policing priority, to continue to keep the roads of South Wales safe. “Our officers will still be policing the roads in our force area 24 hours a day, 7 days a week but we know that members of the public are keen to help, and I am pleased that with the support of Go Safe, we can provide an easier way to submit footage and images either whilst travelling as a passenger, or using the footage of dash cams that can submitted at a later date when the driver has finished their journey.” According to AutoExpress, just two attempts have been made to appeal penalties that have been awarded through Operation Snap, both of which failed. The service will undoubtedly help police forces that have seen their staff numbers drop in the last seven years. Home Office data released last year showed that there has been a significant decline in the number of traffic police units patrolling our roads since 2010. The figures showed that there were 27% fewer officers in 2015 than five years previous, with North Wales Police losing 20% of its traffic police staff in that period - a decline from 88 to 68 police men and women. South Wales Police - which posted a 21% loss of traffic staff last year - is the only other force to adopt the new system, meaning the nation’s remaining 47 forces are still using the more timeconsuming methodology to catch dangerous drivers with dashcam clips. Sergeant John Roberts told the motoring magazine: “Operation Snap isn’t about catching people; it’s about changing behaviour and hopefully acting as a deterrent against bad driving. If drivers think twice before overtaking on double lines because they think they might be reported, that makes the roads a safer place.”

Now it’s driverless trucks Governments must consider ways to manage the transition to driverless trucks in order to avoid potential social disruption from job losses, says a new report published by the International Transport Forum (ITF) with three partner organisations. Self-driving trucks will help save costs, lower emissions and make roads safer. They could also address the shortage of professional drivers faced by road transport industry, the study says. But automated trucks could reduce the demand for drivers by 50-70% in the US and Europe by 2030, with up to 4.4 million of the projected 6.4 million professional trucking jobs becoming redundant, according to one scenario. Even if the rise of driverless trucks dissuades newcomers from trucking, over 2 million drivers in the US and Europe could be directly displaced, according to scenarios examined for the report which makes four recommendations to help manage the transition to driverless road freight: 1. Establish a transition advisory board to give advice on labour issues. 2. Consider a temporary permit system to manage the speed of adoption. 3. Set international standards, road rules and vehicle regulations for self-driving trucks. 4. Continue pilot projects with driverless trucks to test vehicles, network technology and communications protocols. These recommendations were agreed jointly by organisations representing truck manufac-
turers, truck operators and transport workers’ unions, under the auspices of an intergovernmental organisation. This broad coalition of stakeholders lends the call to action particular weight. The report was prepared jointly by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), the International Transport Workers’ Federation and the International Road Transport Union (IRU), the road transport’s industry’s global body, in a project led by the International Transport Forum, a Paris-based intergovernmental organisation linked to the OECD. José Viegas, Secretary-General of the International Transport Forum (ITF) said: “Driverless trucks could be a regular presence on many roads within the next ten years. Self‑driving trucks already operate in controlled environments like ports or mines. Trials on public roads are under way in many regions including the United States and the European Union. Manufacturers are investing heavily into automation, and many governments are actively reviewing their regulations. Preparing now for potential negative social impact of job losses will mitigate the risks in case a rapid transition occurs.” The ITF is an intergovernmental organisation with 57 member countries. The only global body for all modes, it acts as policy think tank and organises the annual summit of transport ministers. trucks are clearly not a national issue, as they should be able to move smoothly across borders. We need international standards, legislation and processes to obtain exemptions from road rules that are appropriate for self-driving trucks. Otherwise we risk having a patchwork of rules and regulations, which could hinder manufacturers and road users from investing in automated vehicles.” ACEA is the advocate for the automobile industry in Europe, representing the 15 major manufacturers of cars, trucks, vans and buses with production sites in the European Union. Christian Labrot, President, International Road Transport Union (IRU), said: “Autonomous trucks will bring many benefits to society, from cost savings and lower emissions to safer roads. Autonomous vehicles will also help the haulage sector deal with the current shortage of drivers in many parts of the world. However we have to remember the dedicated drivers of today will need to be retrained tomorrow and we must keep attracting professionals into road transport. We all
need to work together for a smooth transition to driverless technology.” IRU is the global industry association for road transport, representing truck, bus, coach and taxi operators, with members and activities in more than 100 countries. Steve Cotton, General Secretary of the International Transport Workers’ Federation, said: “Automation in trucking demands a managed and just transition. We strongly welcome the report’s recommendation that trade unions must be part of any such process. We must avoid excessive hardship for truck drivers and ensure the gains from the technology are fairly shared across society. Self-driving trucks threaten to disrupt the careers and lives of millions of professional truck drivers. This report is a timely investigation into how that transition could happen. Its recommendations will help governments to ensure a just transition for affected drivers.” The International Transport Workers’ Federation is a global association of around 700 unions representing over 4.5 million transport workers from some 150 countries.

Ruby’s rock the Font de Llop and raise 1000€ THE IVIE Davies memorial day turned out to be a fantastic day for all the players of the Ruby’s Golf Society. Twenty four members headed to the Font Del Llop and it was the ladies that dominated the golf on the day, which would have delighted Ivie immensely. The weather played its part and the course which was in great condition played well. The results were as follows; Nearest the pin on the par 3’s were greedy Mike Thomas (3) Rob Vaughan and Dave Shelton. Nearest the pin in 2 was Steve Wild, best front nine Rob Litton, best back nine Steve Wild. In third place was Rob Vaughan with 33 points, in second place Glynis Thomas with 35 points and in first place was Michelle Evans with 41 points, I think there may be a handicap cut coming her way. The group returned to Rayz bar on El Raso where their hosts provided a fine meal for all the players and their wives. The meal was followed by a large raffle with generous prizes provided by various golf courses and businesses in and around El Raso, with the group extending huge thanks to them all for their generous support for this event. An auction followed for a couple of other prizes, which, with the generosity of all the people that bought raffle tickets and bid in the auction raised a total of 1000 euros, which was donated to Cancer Research. Thanks were also extended to Robert Scott and Tony Harrison who provided the trophies for this event. All the members were in agreement that all in all a great day was had, with great support and the overall winner was the Cancer Research charity. San Miguel Golf Society at Altoreal Last week the San Miguel Golf Society headed to the Altoreal Golf Course to contest the Linda Rennie Trophy. On, what was possibly the hottest Wednesday meeting so farthis year, the group found a course returning to its once excellent condition, indicative of the investment made by the recent new owners. Greens were a little slow but consistent and fairways actually had grass on them, unlike some of the shorn courses played lately. Scoring was, as it often is here, significantly different amongst categories, with lower handicappers fairing much better than those are higher. Gold category brought the real fight for the Linda Rennie trophy took place and it was Noel Bannon, just pipping Paul Guest on count back with a likewise superb 40 points, who came in the winner. The day’s stableford competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Kyree Skarsmoen (30), 3rd Norman McBride (31 on CB), 2nd Mike Inns (31 on CB), and 1st, way out ahead, Mick Roscoe with 36 points. Silver Category: 4th Hugh Reilly (34 on CB), 3rd Mike Jordan (34 on CB), 2nd Eva Petterson (35) and 1st Ivan Hanak with 36 points. Sporting Alfas 2nd XI made the short trip to Torrevieja last weekend and went back to the Woodbridge Oval with maximum points after beating a youthful side with only 10 men. The one sided affair began when Alfas won the toss and put Torrevieja in to bat and Ciaran Guichard went early but after 18 overs, Torrevieja were a
comfortable 87 for 2. However, the middle order then collapsed as 87 for 2 quickly became 87 for 5, after which they never recovered and Torrevieja were eventually all out for 104. Kieran Perman for Alfas took 6 for 34 in his 5 over spell. After losing an early wicket, Jack Perman stayed solid and ended with
80 not out. Alfas did lose 2 more wickets but reached their target in only the 15th over. Alfas achieved 20 points from the match, whereas Torrevieja achieved 3 points. Torrevieja's next home game is at home on June 17 when they have a game against La Manga, with spectators very welcome.
