DNA results have returned confirming DNA found in the dogs is that of the deceased victim, Luis Angel Sala. Angel Sala was attacked as he walked from his home to a small farm where he had an orchard in February last year. His badly-wounded body was discovered by his son, who became worried when his father failed to return and decided to search for him. Guardia Civil officers arrived at the scene and confirmed that Angel Sala had been killed by a group of dogs, since there were no dangerous wild animals in the area. During interviews with local residents, the defendant admitted to owning five Pitbull/ Bullterrier crosses and although there were no traces of blood on the dogs, at least one was soaking wet. The defendant claimed that the dog had fallen into his swimming pool, but further investigations revealed that the dogs were unlicensed and only one was micro-chipped. The dogs were seized and placed in a local pound in Els Poblets, where they attacked a member of staff and destroyed their cage overnight. The defendant, who refused to testify, was arrested last Thursday and has been charged with reckless homicide and animal abuse.

The Brits are back During the first four months of 2017, almost 14% more visitors from the UK visited the Valencian Community, leaving aside their post Brexit worries. by Andy Mansell The figures, part of a report issued this week by the Frontur, tourist authority, revealed an increase in the arrival of tourists from the United Kingdom, which rose by 13.6% up to April, French by 16.2%, Nordic by 19.6% and Italian by 17% % during the first quarter of the year. The same survey by Frontur shows that the arrivals by airport, estimated at about 1.7 million in the first quarter of the year have increased by 21.5% and by road (349,442) by 3.1%. In addition, travellers for leisure and vacation have increased by

19.3% and for business and professional reasons by 59.7%. Secretary for Valencian Tourism, Francesc Colmer, speaking after the figures were published, expressed his satisfaction at the growth in off season tourism. “This growth in foreign tourists shows the real merit of our sector, for its ability to be competitive, to stand up and work all year round in the fight against seasonality " he said. He pointed out, “These results confirm that we are on the right path towards deseasonalisation and the capture of markets to increase growth". "In 2016 for the first time we approached eight million for-

eign tourists (7.8 million), recording our best ever figures and for this year everything points to the Valencian Community recording a historic high in international tourism, with 8.5 million foreign tourists. " Other data issued from the Frontur survey shows that the Valencian Community received a total of 748,536 foreign tourists, 16.4% more than the figure registered in the same month of 2016. And during the month of April alone, the increase of tourists from the United Kingdom was 18.5%, Germany (+ 9.9%) and Nordic countries (+8, 5%).

Benitachell on the big screen Filmmaker Paco Soto will film his new police comedy film Rural Cops in Benitachell. Filming starts on September 4 and will take place around the Cove of Moraig, Puig Llorenca, the Cumbre del Sol, the town centre and the church of Santa Maria Magdalena. The cast, featuring Ramon Langa, Pablo Pinedo and Javier Bodalo will film in ‘Torretatxell’ – the name the municipality has affectionately been given in the film – until September 13. Soto has announced that filming will be very community centred and will involve groups and associations of the municipality. Casting for extras for the film took place in February and a total of 261 people showed up, the company receiving another 100 CVs by email.

YouGov projects May could lose majority in June election by Tahnee Wright British Prime Minister Theresa May could lose control of parliament in Britain's June 8 election, according to a projection by opinion polling company YouGov, raising the possibility of a political standoff just as formal Brexit talks are set to begin. In contrast to opinion polls that have, until the past week, shown May on course for a big win in the snap election she called, the YouGov model suggested May could lose 20 seats and her 17-seat working majority in the 650-seat British parliament. The YouGov constituency projection, based on 50,000 interviews over the course of a week, showed May would win 310 seats, down from the 331 seats won by her predecessor David Cameron in 2015. The projection showed opposition Labour Party would win 257 seats, up from

232 seats in 2015. Smaller parties, including the Scottish National Party and Northern Irish parties, could win 83 seats, The Times newspaper quoted YouGov as predicting. If the YouGov model turns out to be accurate, May would be well short of the 326 seats needed to form a government in June, when formal Brexit negotiations are set to begin. May called the snap election in a bid to strengthen her hand in negotiations on Britain's exit from the European Union, to win more time to deal with the impact of the divorce and to strengthen her grip on the Conservative Party. But if she does not beat the 12-seat majority Cameron won in 2015, her electoral gamble will have failed and her authority could be undermined just as she tries to deliver what she has told voters will be a successful Brexit.

Two arrested for impersonating driving test candidate TWO men who attempted to take driving tests in another candidate's name were arrested on the Costa Brava last week. The first man was caught on Thursday in Sant Joan les Fonts, Girona when he produced his ID before taking the practical test and officers discovered it to be fake. He was arrested, but the next day – Friday – a second man claiming to be the 'real' candidate arrived to take the exam and was also arrested. Police say the second man was planning to take the test on behalf of his brother, who is 14 years older than him. Substituting candidates in an exam is a criminal offence in Spain. Both men have been released with charges.

30 migrants rescued from burning boat off Spanish coast A group of 30 migrants were rescued off the coast of Spain after their rubber speed boat caught fire forcing them to jump into the sea. The fire erupted at the back near the engine before spreading rapidly to the rest of the boat. The scene was captured by the Portuguese air force plane helping Frontex with maritime surveillance, which threw them a small lifeboat and notified Spanish coastguards. The Spanish coastguards later dispatched a helicopter and several other rescue boats to the scene. The migrants, whose nationalities were not disclosed, were finally taken safe and sound to the port of Motril in southern Spain.

14 arrested and doping stash seized Spanish police raided 25 homes, warehouses and gyms and arrested 14 people accused of belonging to a network manufacturing and trafficking performance-enhancing drugs, the interior ministry said earlier this week. 3 million doses of 120 different substances, including anabolic steroids and hormones and active and inert drug-making ingredients and equipment were seized. The operation took place in Alicante, Malaga, Valencia and Valladolid and began in October 2016 after police detected a wholesale distribution network of manufactured drugs and ingredients originating mainly in China and India. During the raids, substantial amounts of base ingredients and drug-making equipment were uncovered, suggesting at least part of the network was responsible for the manufacturing of homemade drugs, the ministry said.

On Monday morning, General Director of Masymas, Jose Juan Fornes met with Mayor of Javea, Jose Chulvi and presented him with a cheque for â‚Ź2,500 to go toward the environmental restoration works on the Granadella. Masymas launched its first new generation store concept in Javea in March and in commemoration of its 26th year in the municipality, promised to donate five per cent of the revenue it took on its opening day to the environmental restoration of the affected areas of the fires of last summer.

German crossbow stalker deported A German man who stalked celebrities and served eight years in a Spanish prison for attempted murder was deported to his home country on Monday. Arndt Meyer was placed on a flight immediately after his release from Estremera penitentiary in the Madrid region, where he was imprisoned for trying to kill young actress Sara Casasnovas with a crossbow in June 2009. Meyer was originally told he could enjoy a 30day period in Spain before he legally had to leave the country, but authorities repealed this decision after the Spanish press revealed he kept a scrapbook filled with photographs of young actresses who could become his next targets. Meyer, who suffers from a personality disorder, was handed to German police by Spanish authorities on Monday. Meyer will be kept a close eye on by Interpol and his name will be added to a register of sex offenders. In Spain, investigators are now trying to determine how Meyer obtained the photographs while serving time. Meyer’s scrapbook was discovered in October. Prison authorities suspected that the he persisted in harassing Sara Casasnovas by telephone as she had reported night calls to her private number in 2015 and 2016. Following his conviction, Meyer was banned from contacting Casasnovas or approaching her until January 29, 2020.

New Benidorm police station plans unveiled by Andy Mansell Benidorm’s new police station took a step closer to reality after the town hall revealed draft plans for the building at a press conference last week. The basic project has already been sent to the Ministry of the Interior, awaiting approval from technicians attached to the General Directorate of Police, who will review and verify that it meets all the conditions. Drawn up by architects Rafael Landete and JosÊ Manuel Escobedo, the proposed building will have a basement, ground floor and two floors with a constructed area of 9.600 m2. The plot of land earmarked for the new headquarters is directly opposite the Law courts, close to the main bus station on the outskirts of the city. Proposed access for the 5000 square metre building includes a direct underground passage from the police station into the adjacent law courts. The facilities are divided into three distinct spaces, one designated as a public area dealing with ID and passport issues.

Another area will be designated as a detention zone, complete with temporary cells and underground access to the courthouse. The remainder of the station will be a private police area with shooting gallery, gym, changing rooms, office and workshop for police vehicles. The building is presented as a modern, accessible police station with secure zones , independent entry for detainees and a careful design that gives priority to the entrance of natural light. The next step will be for the technicians of the Directorate General of Police to draft the execution project and for the Ministry to tender the work.

Pregnant woman faints after assault in Javea supermarket A man assaulted a group of women following a disagreement on Monday morning in a Javea supermarket. One of the women was 6-and-ahalf months pregnant and fainted. The woman was taken first to the health centre by a Red Cross ambulance before being transferred to Hospital de Denia-MarinaSalud for doctors to check that the scare had not harmed the baby. According to the Spanish press, the disagreement between the two parties occurred as they waited in the queue. The man, stood front of the group of women, is said to have started looking at other products near the checkout when the women pushed in front of him in the queue. The Local Police the Guardia Civil attended the scene and as of Wednesday afternoon, no complaint had been filed for assault.

Two 60-year-old women fight in Valencia – one dies by Tahnee Wright A woman aged approximately 65-yearsold died on Monday at the Hospital La Fe de Valencia after allegedly receiving a blow to the head from another woman of a similar age. The woman quarrelled at the victim’s house in Alafar at around 8.00pm on Monday when the alleged offender, who has been detained by the Guardia Civil, is reported to have struck the victim across the head with a household item. The alleged offender quickly called emergency services and is reported to have said ‘Esta muerta, un golpe en la cabeza, muerta!’ (She is dead, a blow to the head, dead!). When officers from the Local Police of Alafar and the Guardia Civil arrived at the scene, the victim was still alive but unconscious with a severe head injury. A SAMU ambulance raced to the house, along with basic life support and after about an hour, the victim was stable.

The victim was carried to the ambulance via the balcony and remained stable until she arrived at the hospital. At the hospital, the victim entered critical condition and despite doctor’s attempts to save her life, she died shortly afterwards. It is not known why the women were quarrelling and other sources have told the Spanish press that the victim’s severe head injury was due to a fall after being pushed by the alleged offender. The delegate of Government in the Region of Valencia, Juan Carlos Moragues, said on Tuesday that the Guardia Civil are investigating the cause of death. The alleged offender, when initially questioned at the scene by the Guardia Civil, admitted her and the victim had argued, but given her state of anxiety, officers took her to the hospital to be taken care of. As of Wednesday afternoon, the alleged offender remains at the hospital as a detainee on suspicion of homicide.

Three arrested for death of young man in Jalon released

by Tahnee Wright The three men who were arrested at the end of March on suspicion of murdering 24-year-old Alejandro Pavia from Villalonga in a fight that took place outside Can Tallarina in Jalon have been released without bail. The primary hypothesis was that Alejandro Pavia died after being hit hard on the head near

the pub on the outskirts of Jalon, on the CV-750 road however, autopsy results have returned ruling this out – instead indicating that Pavia suffered a type of asthmatic disease. Two of the men arrested - a 24-year-old Romanian and a 19-year-old Spaniard - have spent the last two months in prison whilst the third, a 16-year-old Romanian has been in a juvenile centre.

Investigations continue as the judge has summoned the coroners to issue a definitive report on the cause of Pavia’s death. Can Tallarina is one of the best-known entertainment venues in the area, and among its offerings that attract hundreds of young people are the ‘crazy Sundays’ that begin in the afternoon and continue through the night.

We will not be Uber-ed by Andy Mansell Benidorm taxi drivers joined in a national strike last Tuesday to protest against a countrywide rise in unlicenced operators. According to government officials in Madrid, 6000 marched in the capital on Tuesday to demonstrate against app-based transportation services. There were also strikes in most large cities: Barcelona was without taxis for 24 hours and Madrid for 12 hours. In Benidorm, the local taxis downed wheels from 12.00pm until 2.00pm across the urban areas of the city. The protesters have one main demand, which pertains to a rule that only one license be granted to on-demand ride service vehicles for every 30 taxi licenses. The current ratio is 64,763 taxicab licenses for 5,865 alternative livery vehicle licenses. In Madrid, there were no taxis in sight early Tuesday morning. By 8.30am, taxi drivers were congregating outside the central Atocha train station in preparation for the noon march. “Legal taxis are united across Spain. We oppose Uber and Cabify, which are toying with the bread-and-butter of over 100,000 families,” said Antonio Gil, a taxi driver from Barcelona speaking to the press. At noon, thousands of taxi drivers from Bilbao, Málaga, the Balearic Islands, Barcelona, Benidorm, and even France and Belgium began a two-hour march from Atocha to the Fountain of Neptune in the Spanish capital. There were moments of tension when the march reached its destination and six representatives handed their list of grievances to Congress. offering their licenses for anywhere between €150,000 and €170,000. The ads for chauffeured vehicles offer licenses for around €40,000. With the surge in app-based ride services, the price of these licenses is starting to go down, and this directly affects taxi drivers – self-employed workers who rely on the sale of their license as a retirement fund.

Fire close to naturist beach Firefighters from Benidorm were called out to a fire in the Raco de Conill area, close to the picturesque naturist cove, for the third time in a month, last week. The fireman quelled the flames in less than an hour, but were unable to determine the cause of the fire, which is leading police to suspect that the three fires, which have occurred in less than a matter of three weeks, could be linked. The fire appeared to have started under some dry brush, but had begun to spread rapidly owing to a strong afternoon breeze. After extinguishing the flames, the fire officers, cleared the immediate area of other dry brushes to ensure the flames would not re-ignite. Local police requested that all visitors to the area, be extra vigilant when extinguishing cigarettes or using portable barbecue equipment in view of the current spell of dry weather and high winds in recent weeks.

by Tahnee Wright A female zookeeper who was killed by a tiger in Cambridge, England in what zoo officials called a ‘freak accident’ has been identified. Rosa King, 34, died on Monday at Hamerton Zoo after one of the zoo’s tigers reportedly entered an enclosure where Rosa was working and attacked her. Devastated family and friends have paid tribute to Rosa, who was a carnivore keeper at the zoo. Rosa's mother said of her daughter, ‘She wouldn't have done anything else, it's what she has always done, it's what she has always loved.’ Gary Chrisholm, a wildlife photographer who often visited the zoo, said that Rosa was an integral part of the park.

‘Rosa wasn’t just a keeper at Hamerton Zoo - she was Hamerton Zoo. Her passion for the animals in her care was exceptional though her favourites were undoubtedly the cheetahs, who she would refer to as her pride and joy,’ Chrisholm wrote on his Facebook. ‘I feel privileged to have known Rosa and been able to call her a friend.’ Emergency services were called to the park at around 11.15am on Monday following reports of a ‘serious incident’. A Magpas air ambulance was on the scene 20 minutes later and visitors were evacuated from the attraction just before midday. An East of England Ambulance Service paramedic crew and two rapid response vehicles also attended. The zoo said it appeared to have been a ‘freak accident’, as it remained closed

amid an investigation. In a statement, the zoo said: ‘At no point during the incident did any animals escape their enclosures and at no point was public safety affected in any way.’ ‘All our thoughts and sympathies are with our colleagues, friends and families at this dreadful time.’ Cambridgeshire Police said the tiger had not been killed and was unharmed. The zoo opened in June 1990 and covers 25 acres. It includes enclosures for Malaysian tigers, Bengal tigers, cheetahs, wolves, corsac foxes, kangaroos as well as a variety of birds, reptiles and domestic animals. In October 2008, a cheetah who escaped from the park was found by a nine-year-old boy in the back garden of his family home.

Fire officers were called to extinguish a third fire in three weeks close to the Raco de Conill beach in Villajoyosa

Boy loses both legs on Madrid Metro A 13-year-old Morrocan boy lost both his legs from the tibia down on Sunday, after being run over by a Madrid Metro train on Line 1. Early investigations report the boy was riding between two carriages while the train was in motion. The incident took place at 8.00pm as the train pulled out of the Sierra de Guadalupe station, in the southeast of the city. Security camera footage shows that the train had already closed its doors and was leaving the station when the boy climbed onto the link between two of the carriages. Just several metres down, once the train was in a tunnel, the boy fell. The train driver was not aware of the situation and continued out of the tunnel, running over the boy in the process. Despite losing his legs, the boy managed to crawl off the tracks to safety reaching a ventilation shaft and calling for help. A pedestrian on the street heard the boy’s calls and alerted the emergency services immediately. The boy was taken to La Paz hospital in a critical condition. Medical sources told Spanish press on Monday that the boy was still being treated.

Auction raised 1000 euros for cancer charity

Wetland works given the go ahead

The Giving4Giving charity based in La Nucia have raised a massive one thousand euros from a charity auction held recently at their newly opened auction house in the town. After the second successful G4G charity auction Giving4Giving were able to donate 1.000 euros to the Alfas del Pi branch of the Spanish national cancer charity AECC. Gary from the G4G charity donated the money to help towards the staging of a Big Band Concert being held in Alfas del Pi on June 5 in aid of the AECC. Event organiser, Pamela Dawson Tasker was happy to accept the donation from Giving4Giving.

by Tahnee Wright The environmental protection office began works in the Senillar wetland some few weeks ago now and alongside the continuous study of scientists of Valencia University, they recently tested the possibility of increasing the wetland’s water level. A provisional dam of natural stones

and soil from the Senillar was built, allowing the environmental protection office to test whether the water could be held and the flow reduced to increase the water level. The test results were positive and work will start soon. The provisional dam will be removed and pre-fabricated structures will be used.

The current studies show that a low water level is less damaging to the natural characteristics of the Senillar than changes in pH levels, conductivity etc. The Senillar wetland is regarded as one of the most precious ecosystems on the Marina Alta coast and has been under protected since 2014 when it was declared a wildlife reserve by the environmental protection office.

Brit fugitives found hiding in metal shed by Andy Mansell A British couple, formerly of Mallorca, on the run from police for selling their underage daughters to a friend for sex, have been captured living in a container shed on a farm in Southern Spain. The man and woman, aged 54 and 59, had been living in Mallorca but fled the island after their sentencing last year for giving out their children to a man they knew, in return for money. After spending months hunting the couple, for the offences dating back almost eight years, members of the Guardia Civil found the them living in a small shed on the edge of a farm in the district of Cártama in the province of Malaga. The couple who had been on the run to avoid a prison sentence, identified by the police only as TLD 54 years old and BSD aged 59, both of British nationality. The fugitive pair were arrested under a European Arrest Warrant following their conviction for the sexual abuse of minors. Police believe they had been living in the shed for some time in order to evade justice. A spokesman for the Guardia Civil, issued a statement that said: “The facts go back to

the year 2009 when the couple offered their under-age daughters to have sexual relations with a person, known to them, in exchange for an economic benefit, the reason why they were convicted in the year 2016 for the crime of sexual abuses to minors.” “After the sentence, those now detained fled the island of Mallorca where they

lived to avoid their entry into prison, being located by agents after several months of searches.” “The couple remained hidden during this time in a shed located on a farm on the outskirts of Cártama, Malaga.” The couple have since appeared before a court and were remanded in prison.

Elderly couple eaten by their own dogs in Mallorca An elderly couple were eaten by their own dogs after dying at their home in Mallorca at least two months ago. The Spanish press reported that police believe the man died first and his wife, who suffered from Alzheimer’s and was unable to look after herself, died just days later. Both bodies showed signs of having been eaten by the dogs the couple kept at their remote country house outside the town of Llucmajor on the Balearic Island. The couple, who were both 75-years-old, kept five dogs at the property – three of whom survived having been eating their owner’s remains whilst the other two, who were tied up outside the property, died of starvation. The horrific scene was discovered last Tuesday by a child of the couple, who had stopped by the house after becoming worried as they were not answering telephone calls. The remains were in an advanced state of decomposition but initial investigations by the Guardia Civil suggest both husband and wife died of natural causes.

an offshore account in Panama. State prosecutor Jose Manuel Maza said Thursday that Moix had resigned for personal reasons. He said his office found that Moix ‘at no time acted illegally or inappropriately’ and saw no reason to fire him despite the political and media uproar of recent weeks.

Opposition parties showed unusual unity in reprimanding Moix, Maza and Spain's justice minister last month for allegedly hindering anti-corruption investigations. The government steadfastly defended Moix but revelations that he held offshore company shares were seen to be the last straw, even though it was not illegal.

‘Bus of Hate’ parked outside Benidorm schools A bus, known to liberals as the ‘Bus of Hate’, belonging to a highly controversial, ultra catholic group using the slogan ‘Hazte Oir’, which translates as ‘Get to Hear’, has toured Benidorm schools during the last week, spreading anti-gay messages to pupils. A spokesman for the local Valencian political party, Compromis, has publicly denounced the campaign, drawing it’s attention to the APA association and the commission for equality of the region. Josep Bigorra, made the denouncement by showing an image of the orange bus taken in the school complex of Salto del Agua, where two schools and four public institutes are located. Apparently, according to Bigorra, the bus of the ultra-right wing group, drove into the school complex announcing the message "Leave our children alone", which in other cities has been accompanied by the delivery to the public authorities of a manifesto where they claim what they define as "protection for children against the indoctrination that is proposed from any ideology, including gender." In addition to the public denouncement, Compromis, through its social networking profile has launched a clear and forceful message to Hazte Oír: "Please move your bus, recognize the #LGTB diversity and do not criminalise anyone particularly children, for how they were born, how they live, and who they choose to live with” using the hashtag #STOPLGTBFòbia.

Gender abuse in Spain on the increase by Andy Mansell Cases of gender violence in Spain have risen for the second successive year according to an alarming report issued yesterday. The largest increase in complaints of violence was against men over the age of 75, which could imply that more elderly women are feeling more confident about reporting abuse to the authorities. The figures show that in 2016, more than 28,000 women throughout the country received some form of official protection from police and government authorities. There were 28,281 officially registered female victims of gender-related violence in Spain in 2016, a 2.4% rise from the previous year, according to the country’s National Statistics Institute (INE). Of these women, all of whom were given some form of official protection, 44 were killed by their spouse, or ex-partner according to provisional figures from the Health Ministry. The rise in the number of officially recorded victims has grown for the second year in a row, following a drop between 2012 and 2014. Nearly half of the victims of gender violence who had been assigned precautionary measures by a court (48.6%) were between 30 and 44 years old, according to the Statistics on Gender Violence and Domestic Violence report released on Wednesday. By age group, the biggest increase in 2016 was among women 75 and older (14.6%), followed by the 40–44 age group (8.5%). In relative terms, however, the rate of abuse is highest in

the 25-29 age range with three out of every 1,000 requiring some form of official protection. In the case of abused teens, complaints fell by 10.7%: there were 569 victims last year compared with 637 in 2015. The most significant rise in complaints was against men aged 75 and older (12.9%). In the majority of cases (23.3%), across all age groups, the victim and the abuser were married.

There was also a 7% rise in the number of convictions, up from 24,265 to 25,959, while acquittals dropped from 6,768 to 6,288. In seven out of 10 cases, the conviction was handed down in under a year. Under Spanish law, gender violence consists of any physical or psychological aggression by a man against a woman who he has a relationship with.

Closer collaboration required

Mayor of Javea, Jose Chulvi met with the Provincial Board of the Montgo Natural Park on Wednesday and called for a greater common effort to promote the conversion of the Cap de Sant Antoni lighthouse into a centre to educate visitors about the marine reserves of the Marina Alta. "We know we have the moral backing of the board, but we need more - close collaboration and coordinated efforts for the plan to start taking shape," the mayor said.

Revellers turned up, wearing all shades of pink, from cerise to fuschia and watched a cast of local and international singers, drag artists and Dj’s doing what they do best. There were star performances from tribute acts to Katy Perry, Meghan Trainor, Jess Glynne, Amy Winehouse, Pink , Jessie J, stunning drag shows from Stevie Spit and his fabulous Fusion crew, Alexia and James Mcdonald, plus Dj’s Jon Fenix, Jeff Spinner and all the way from Madrid DeeBanshee, all playing under the stars on the beautiful Benidorm viewpoint. One of the most poignant moments occurred when local celebrity Graham Boland and his team of volunteers joined presenters Sammy Kruz and Roxie Corazon on stage to release pink balloons in support of the victims of the Manchester terror attack. They had sold balloons at 2.00€ each and purchasers were able to write a message of support for the victims, before pausing the party to let the balloons go free into the darkened Benidorm skies. Graham was able to report a final total of 500 euros was raised on the night and sent to the appeal fund,

Encouraging children into music

The Centro Artístico Musical de Javea will host a special event this Saturday as it celebrates the second year of the Fira de la Musica – encouraging children into music. The Riurau d'Arnauda will act as stage for the day’s events, which begin at 10.00am with breakfast for the children as the students of the Centro Artístico Musical discuss their experiences at the centre and the benefits of getting into music at a young age. Workshops will run from 11.30am until 2.00pm and children can sample and test instruments and even learn how to make their own. Throughout the morning, there will be live performances from different groups of the Centro Artístico Musical and a bar service will be open for the adults. The festivities will close as all groups come together at 1.30pm for a show-stopping finale. The event is supported by the Department of Culture directed by Quico Moragues, who encourages all parents to bring their children along for a fun, enriching day out.

Denia 2017/ 2018 falleras mayores announced

Nine year-old Carla Vinzaros Gimenez and 25-year-old Melani Ivars Rojas were announced as the 2017/ 2018 falleras mayores of Denia in an election ceremony at the Salon de Plenos last week. Carla, from Campaments, is a 4th grade student at the Les Vessanes school in Denia. Melani, when interviewed by the Spanish press, claimed to be ‘in a dream’ that didn’t quite feel real. Melani has been a fallera of the Saladar Commission since 2008 and is studying to become a teacher. The election ceremony was attended by the 11 Presidents of the Denia Commissions, seven members of the local fallera board, the President of the Board and the falleras mayores of 2016/ 2017 - Ines Alacreu and Mar Cabrera - who all exercised their right to vote. Once the votes were counted, all gathered in the hall which was, by this point, packed with members of the public as the names were announced… First was Carla, who burst with joy and excitedly got up on stage to accept the prestigious title. Second was Melani, whose name had to be called twice as she could not believe it the first time! In true fallas fashion, the ceremony closed with a big band but Carla and Melani didn’t stay out too late as they began their reign with a tight schedule - attending the proclamations of the Belleas del Foc de Alicante at the weekend.

Stolen autographs from Serbia up for auction in Spain by Tahnee Wright A dozen autographs of world leaders allegedly stolen from commemoration books in Serbia following the death of Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito have been put up for auction in Malaga this weekend, causing Serbia to seek help from Interpol to recover them. The autographs alleged to have been stolen include then US vice president George H.W. Bush, the last Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe. The autographs signed off posthumous tributes to Tito, who led socialist Yugoslavia from the end of World War Two until his death in 1980. They were written into commemoration books during official visits by the leaders to Yugoslavia in the years that followed. Following a media report that the autographs had been stolen, Belgrade's Museum of Yugoslav History launched an investigation and established that pages were missing from the tribute books that were on display in a mausoleum that is part of the museum's complex. ‘We reported the case to police and they will inform Interpol... We are waiting for a response,’ museum official Ana Radic told the Spanish press. ‘The theft appears to have taken place before the museum took over the running of the mausoleum in 2015’, she explained. ‘We also contacted the auction house and asked them to cancel the auction and provide us with additional information on the documents so we can confirm their authenticity’

and recover them, Radic said. The director of the British-based auction house ‘Autographs Auctions’, Richard Davie, told the Spanish press a colleague managing the sale ‘has been in touch with the relevant authorities and is complying with their requests for further information regarding the documents’. ‘In the rare event that the ownership of documents is brought into question then we are always willing to assist

the relevant parties in further investigations and if necessary, withdraw documents from the auction until the rightful owner can be established,’ Davie told the Spanish press by email. Among the other autographs that have gone missing are those of India's first female prime minister Indira Gandhi, assassinated Swedish premier Olof Palme, Cambodia's king Norodom Sihanouk, late Syrian president Hafez al-Assad and Romanian communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu.

When the actor Roger Moore passed away on May 23 I felt a personal sense of loss. The thespian is perhaps best known for his part as James Bond; others will relate better to his role in The Saint TV series. As a well-travelled habitué of North, East, South and West Africa my evocations of Roger Moore centre on the Wild Geese movie. Released in 1978, the film is a reminder of the cynical and ruthless methods of rich and powerful men who kill without blinking a reptilian eyelid. The Wild Geese was inspired by South African author Daniel Carney’s unpublished novel The Thin White Line. The film’s title, its flag and shoulder patch, was modelled on Ireland’s 17th century legendary army in exile. Rhodesia and Swaziland provide the backdrop to the parachute drop carried out by the 49 hired dogs of war. The mostly British mercenaries had been contracted by banker Sir Edward Matheson to re-install a popular African president. If successful, the overthrown president awaiting execution will be released by the mercenaries. It is a tough assignment as the deposed president Julius Limbani is held in a remote garrison. He is guarded by several hundred Cuban and notorious Simba tribesmen. The soldiers of fortune are led by Colonel Alan Faulkner played by Welsh born Richard Burton, whose role was well chosen. The success of the Wild Geese movie is likely due to its stark realism. Those watching the movie felt it was not so much a film as a documentary. The movie’s director, Andrew McLaglen, will certainly have learned much from the epic documentary, Africa Adios. The part

played by Colonel Alan Falkner (Richard Burton) was modelled on Irish-born mercenary Colonel Mike Hoare. Roger Moore assumed the role of ex-pilot Shawn Fynn. The part is pivotal and the actor’s good humour whilst under fire is legendary. The movie recounts the breath-taking exploits of the mercenary band of brothers during the white knuckle ride rescue attempt. Irish actor and former drifter Richard Harris (Rafer Janders) was the only one of the main actors who did not have military experience. After successfully rescuing deposed President Limbani the triumphant mercenaries wait on a remote airstrip for the arrival of a rescuing transport aircraft. Disaster: The corrupt banker, who bankrolled the rescue, has meantime cut a deal for mineral assets with the incumbent president. Limbani is no longer needed. The rescuing aircraft is diverted and the mostly White desperadoes are abandoned deep in the African bush. Their chances of survival are slim; the movie chronicles their desperate plight and escape. Roger Moore played the part well but there’s no escaping the Grim Reaper.

Science Correspondent) And on this premise, this is where I begin. Perhaps the author's name seems familiar? One of his well-known books is "Remains of the Day." The book under review was published in 2005, a sad and haunting book presenting a dystopian society. Deeply disturbing and frightening. "We demonstrated to the world that if students were reared in humane, cultivated environments, it was possible for them to grow to be as sensitive and intelligent as any ordinary human being." Organ donations, cloning, artificial intelligence, gene editing and robotics interested Ishiguro who believed that they could transform the way we live and interact with each other over the next thirty years and he presents to us very simple, unambitious and uncomplicated people interested in discovering their "possibles" and fulfilling their destinies: being carers, donors and ultimately reaching completion. Kathy reflects on her childhood at Hailsham, a special institution where the clones were reared and allowed some privileges whereas others were "reared in deplorable conditions." We learn about her fragile relationship with Ruth and Tommy and their love triangle, following them from the Hailsham days through to the Cottages where they developed study skills prior to begin training to be carers to the hospitals where it all ended. Kathy survives for a time, at least. She has been a carer for more than eleven years and soon she will be a donor like all of her Hailsham friends. As children growing up they seemed to behave just like normal children with their petty jealousies and anxieties, bullying Tommy for being a bit of a misfit and exploding with temper tantrums. But perhaps he was more human than we gave him credit for?

Ruth suffers with insecurities which closely reveals human emotions and concludes that she, just like all the other clones are modelled from trash. Perhaps a junkie or a prostitute, a tramp or a convict? “If you want to look for possibles, then you look in the gutter. You look in rubbish bins. Look down the toilet, that’s where you’ll find where we came from.” Who tampered with nature and created people with souls who were capable of experiencing love but not grief? The newspaper sections I refuse to read and have done for several years now, are the financial pages. The tables, graphs and forecasts leave me dizzy and the so called experts have got it wrong so many times now, I am puzzled as to why anybody would listen to a word they say. But it’s the complicated figures that turn me off as much as anything, because ever since my secondary school days I have built a mental block to all that stuff. Primary school was fine, I coped with fractions and then decimals and even learned how to convert one to the other. As for mental arithmetic, I was a whizz and have been ever since. It was a breeze. I had no problem with other subjects and passed my 11-Plus. Well almost. Then came the Big School and everything changed. I found myself in the selective stream for those who were border line cases, and for which there was a grammar syllabus which included a new word – ‘Maths’. In the primary school it was simply termed ‘Arithmetic’ and even earlier, ‘Sums’. Why change the name? But I was soon to find out. The first Geometry lesson was a blur. This wasn’t sums, this was drawing weird shapes with even weirder names – rhombuses, trapezoids and parallelograms. Then there were obtuse and acute angles . . . who even gave a monkies? It didn’t help that the history teacher had called me obtuse. How could I be described as someone between 90 and 180 degrees? Then came Algebra, oh boy. It had taken me an age in infant school to learn by rote the twelve times tables and then get to grips with addition, subtraction and long division – all using numbers. But I had learned them all and was proud of myself. Now this. Suddenly letters of the alphabet were part of the equation, literally, because ‘equation’ was another alien name that had been slipped into the vocabulary. I understood about roots, but how could you find the cube or square root of a jumble of letters and numbers? And why bother? By the time they hit me with trigonometry, or trig as the smart alecs’ of the class smugly called it, with its sines, cosines and tangents, I was done. I carry the mental scar to this day and the terror of that dreaded beast called mathematics.

Por and Para

Amazing as it seems, I haven’t yet written about the difference between “por” and “para” in Spanish. Considering the fact that I’m getting near the two hundred mark of what will eventually become a fivevolume series of “Step by Step Spanish” articles, that’s quite an achievement, especially as it’s a question that comes up frequently in class. So, I’m now going to compare and contrast the uses of POR and PARA in three ways, according to three different concepts. Before you throw up your hands in horror, just think for a while about how you would explain the use of the words “for” and “to” to someone who didn’t speak much English. Believe me, that would be much more complicated than what we are going to do now. Reason v. purpose Firstly, we use “por” to express the reason for something and “para” to express the purpose for something. When we ask “¿Por qué?” (Why?), we are actually asking “For what reason?”, that is, what is the cause of something. There is another question which is “¿Para qué?” which also means “Why?” but in the sense of “what for?”, that is, “For what purpose?” “Por” on its own in this sense can be translated as “because of”. “¿Por qué llegas tarde?” (Why are you late?) “Por el tráfico” (Because of the traffic) – in other word expressing the reason for, or cause of, our lateness. “Para” on the other hand expresses “purpose”. “¿Para qué usas esta herramienta?” (What do you use this tool for?) “Para cortar madera” (To cut wood) – in other words, for the

purpose of cutting word. Exchange v. one way The second concept is the contrast between “exchange” on the one hand, and something going in one direction, i.e. not being exchanged, on the other. This is easier to understand with examples. “Compré un libro por 20 euros” (I bought a book for – in exchange for – 20 euros). “Compré un libro para mi marido” (I bought a book for – as a present for - my husband). Therefore, if you say “compré un libro por mi marido” you are saying: “I bought a book in exchange for my husband” which, as tempting as it might sound, is not a deal usually offered by bookshops. Period of time v. time deadline Thirdly we have a time-related concept. “Por” refers to a period of time whereas “para” refers to a time deadline. The classic mistake is when we want to say: “I’m going to England for two weeks” which is: “Voy a Inglaterra por dos semanas”. “Two weeks” is a period of time so we must use “por”. However, when “for” refers to a specific time in the future we use “para” as in “Los deberes son para martes”. The homework is for Tuesday. “Llegarán para las dos”. “They will arrive for (or by) two o´clock”. In addition to these three main concepts, there are quite a lot of idiomatic uses of “por” and “para” (especially “por”) which you just have to get familiar with

one by one. Many of them you already know – “por favor”; “para mí”; “por teléfono”; “gracias por …”. Another meaning of “por” is “by” or “times” as when we are saying measurements. “2m x 2m” would be said using “por” and the texting symbol for “por” is an “x”. On the other hand, if you can’t get to grips with any of this, you can always shout out “¡Por dios!” but definitely not “para dios”, if you don’t mind.

“John had no idea his investment fees were so high!”

Last week, a gentleman, we’ll call him John, (I’ve changed his name to protect his identity) came to see me. John wanted a second opinion on an investment plan he had set up when he first moved to Spain 5 years ago. Somehow, despite strong financial markets, John’s portfolio hadn’t made a penny this entire time. John was helpful enough to bring along all the valuations he’d been issued since he started his plan, along with some Fund Fact Sheets.

From these documents, I quickly realised that the funds that had been recommended to John had incredibly high entry and ongoing fees. These anomalies were directly related to the fact that these funds were not FCA regulated. FCA regulated funds cannot make non-disclosed payments to financial advisors, yet the funds John’s advisor had recommended actually charged the client a 5% entry fee, all of which was subsequently paid to John’s advisor here in Spain, and also paid John’s advisor a hidden ‘trail’ fee of 1% per year. This explains the incredibly high ongoing fees, which were 3 to 4 times higher than I’d expect of an FCA regulated fund. In addition, the client had also paid open fees to his advisor – 3% to set up his plan and 1% annual advisor fee. To add insult to injury, around 18 months ago, John’s

advisor had switched all of John’s funds because his firm now had access to a new ‘exclusive’ fund. This cost John another 5% of his portfolio, to buy into a fund with absolutely no track record, which subsequently underperformed. John’s total fund and advice fees over 5 years were close to 25%, over three-quarters of which had been paid to his advisor. Due to the complex way the fees were disguised and layered, John had no idea his investment fees were so high. There were only 2 small reassurances I could make. Firstly, he was not alone – 10,000s of expats in Spain have been set-up with similarly over-priced portfolios as this is widely practised by firms here. Secondly, it’s a very easy problem to solve. John agreed for Chorus to take over the management of his portfolio, and we immediately reduced his annual advisor fee, and sold those over-priced, underperforming funds. John now has a diverse portfolio of FCA regulated funds, with a strong track record from well-known, UK based investment institutions, none of which charged an entry cost. His total fund and ongoing advice fees are down to just 1% per year, meaning John will save significant amounts in fees over the coming years which will have a positive effect on the growth of his plan.

Santander or Bankia most likely to save Banco Popular Spain's biggest bank Santander or state-owned lender Bankia are most likely to step in to save troubled Banco Popular, sources familiar with the talks told Reuters, although a deal is still far from guaranteed. Popular is racing to find a merger partner after Spanish Economy Minister Luis de Guindos ruled out a potential bailout with public money, while a capital increase is facing resistance from the bank's existing shareholders. Saddled with â‚Ź37 billion of soured property assets, Popular has asked for binding offers by June 10 and aims to close a takeover by the end of next month. The bank lost â‚Ź3.6 billion in 2016 and has undergone three leadership shakeups in less than a year. Its shares have fallen 65 percent over the past year and are the worst performers on the European STOXX banking index. Santander, Bankia and BBVA all showed initial interest in Popular in a preliminary round of talks earlier this month.

Spain’s inflation slows down

Spain's inflation slowed to a five-month low in May, flash data from the statistical office INE showed Tuesday. Consumer prices advanced 1.9 percent year-onyear in May, slower than the 2.6 percent increase registered in April. This was the slowest since December 2016, when prices gained 1.6 percent. At the same time, harmonized consumer price inflation came in at 2 percent versus 2.6 percent in April. Month-on-month, consumer prices slid 0.1 percent, in contrast to a 1 percent rise in the previous month. The harmonized index of consumer prices remained flat in May.

Indian Prime Minister arrives in Spain Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday urged Spanish firms to invest in India, saying that the fast-growing country offers ‘many opportunities’ in areas ranging from tourism to energy. ‘India is an enormous country and it offers many opportunities to Spanish firms in all sectors,’ he said as he arrived at Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's official residence in Madrid for talks. ‘I invite Spanish firms to participate in our development,’ he added. Prime Minister Modi, who arrived in Spain late on Tuesday from Germany, his first stop on a four-nation Europe tour, was scheduled to meet King Felipe VI later on Wednesday. He was also supposed to meet Spanish business leaders as part of his push to increase foreign investment in India, the world's fastestgrowing major economy. ‘Spanish firms are global leaders in sectors that are a priority for us. We want to attract tourism, infrastructure, energy and defence firms,’ Prime Minister Modi said in an interview published in the Spanish press. Spain is India's seventh largest trading partner in the European Union. Two-way trade totalled €4.72 billion in 2016, an 8.5 per cent increase over the previous year, of which Spanish exports made up nearly €1.26 billion. The number of Spanish firms that operate in India has risen to over 230 currently from just 70 in 2008. ‘Our bilateral relations are becoming more and more intense. I hope this visit spurs deeper ties between our two countries,’ Rajoy said. It is the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Spain since Narasimha Rao came to the country in 1992.

Ariana Grande’s ‘One Last Time’ hits number one in the iTunes chart as fans purchase the track in tribute to victims of Manchester bombing. The singer, 23, performed the track on the night 22 people were killed in the foyer of the MEN Arena when terrorist Salman Abedi detonated a nail bomb. Fans started a petition to get the song, which was released in 2015, to the top of the charts in tribute to those who died in the explosion. It has since claimed top spot ahead of Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s Despacito and Liam Payne’s Strip That Down. Reports have claimed that the US singer, 23, will be back on UK turf for the fundraising gig as early as next Sunday, June 4. TMZ states that Grande will headline the show, with her manager Scooter Braun currently in the process of booking other acts to join the line-up. I hosted Benidorm Pink Weekend just last week and was honoured to do a charity balloon launch in memorial of those tragic victims. Life Benidorm cast do it again

Many of the Benidorm TV series turned up to support the karaoke event which raised over 11,000 euros for the Busy Bees Benidorm charity

Following on from last year’s magnificent fundraising effort, the cast and crew of the Benidorm TV series outshone themselves at last week’s karaoke event. The charity fundraising night, now in it’s third year, has been a firm favourite on the ex-pat calendar, eagerly awaited by fans of the ITV prime time series. This year’s event proved no exception, with a full house packing the UK Cabaret club venue for last Friday’s performance. Many of the cast favourites showed up to perform including Jake Canuso, Tim Healey, Sherrie Hewson and of course, the ‘karaoke King’ and host for the evening , series creator Derren Litten. All proceeds from the event were handed over to Busy

Bees, which is a local charity directly supporting vulnerable women and underprivileged children at residential homes in the nearby area. Wayne Bellamy-Wright founder of the charity, was delighted to announce that early counting figures for the money collected on the night was close to 11,000 euros, more than the figure raised last year. The funds were raised by tickets sold and from buckets passed around, plus proceeds from an auction of memorabilia from the TV show. Speaking after receiving news of the funds raised by the evening, Wayne said: “Well what fantastic news I have, after speaking with Derren Litten, the main man from Benidorm who had spent all

morning counting buckets we have a grand total of 11085.12 euros raised at the cast karaoke here in Benidorm .” said a delighted Wayne. “Not only am I grateful for you putting on this great event, but you did all the organising and counting and everything which took so much stress off me who is always a busy bee, thank you to all cast members and everyone that attended the event” he continued. “Three cheers to Derren, Simon and all at Tiger Aspects, thank you.” One hundred percent of the money handed over to Busy Bees will go directly towards making life easier for the many babies, children, and women escaping violent relationships living in residential homes in the Benidorm area.

whats on Bruno Macaggi in Moraira at the ‘Great Circus Wonderland’ The ‘Great Circus Wonderland’ has arrived in Moraira and performances will run until Monday June 5. Boasting one of the largest circus tents in Europe at more than 5,000 square metres, the Great Circus Wonderland will celebrate their 39th anniversary in Spain – wowing the crowds with an all-new twopart spectacular. In the first part, the audience will enjoy a 45minute performance dedicated to the history of Peter Pan, with 25 acrobats, trapeze artists, jugglers, tightrope-walkers and clowns. Part two brings a host of artists out into the central court for an authentic circus performance - Randy Forgione, the aerial gymnast on nylon tapes, 12 acrobats on unicycles, Sara Jane, the wire operator on steel cable, the ‘Wonderland troupe’, five acrobatic skaters, Ringo the Clown with his new show for 2017 and Bruno Macaggi (Cristian Catenato), recently awarded the prestigious ‘Best Young Circus Artist of the Year 2016’ title. The Great Circus Wonderland does not use animals in any of its performances.

The English Choir of Teulada-Moraira joins the Moors and Christians Moraira’s Parish Church will play host to the English Choir of Teulada Moraira on Monday (June 5) from 9.00pm as they perform a concert to open the Moors and Christians fiesta of 2017 – with songs from favourite musicals along with traditional Spanish numbers. Creamy cottage cheese scrambled eggs Ingredients 1 tablespoon butter, 4 beaten eggs, 1/4 cup cottage cheese, ground black pepper to taste, 1 teaspoon chopped fresh chives, or to taste (optional) Preparation & Cooking Preparation - 5 minutes. Cooking - 5 minutes Method 1. Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Pour beaten eggs into the skillet; let cook undisturbed until the bottom of the eggs begin to firm, 1 to 2 minutes. 2. Stir cottage cheese and chives into eggs and season with black pepper. Cook and stir until eggs are nearly set, 3 to 4 minutes more.

Hot Dogs with Coney Sauce

Ingredients 1 pound lean ground beef, 1 (12 ounce) bottle chili sauce, 1/4 cup water, 1 (1.25 ounce) package chili seasoning mix, 1 tablespoon yellow mustard, 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, 1/2 teaspoon onion powder, 8 beef hot dogs, 8 hot dog buns Preparation & Cooking Preparation - 10 minutes. Cooking – 35 minutes. Method 1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook and stir beef in the hot skillet until browned and crumbly, 5 to 7 minutes; drain and discard grease. Add chili sauce, water, chili seasoning, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and onion powder; bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until Coney sauce is thickened, about 30 minutes. 2. In a medium bowl, stir together the gelatine mix and boiling water. Mix in frozen strawberries, and stir until thawed. Pour over cream cheese mixture in pan. Beniarda tapas lunch Members of the U3A Marina Baixa dining out group visited the pretty mountain village of Beniarda, overlooking the Guadalest Reservoir last week on a culinary adventure of tapas and cake, organised by Liz. Forty five lucky diners enjoyed a lovely Tapas lunch, at La Mezquita Restaurant consisting of several different courses of tapas, including a selection of postres, with unlimited wine, beer, water and coffee. Prior to the lunch, 30 of the members met at the beautifully restored home of Gary & Susan Bell, in the village of L´Abdet, for coffee and home made cakes. U3A Marina Baixa holds its general meetings on the fourth Monday of each month at the auditorium in the Casa de Cultura Alfaz del Pi. The next Meeting is on Monday 26th June. Oliva U3A welcomes new committee

On Thursday May 25, Oliva U3A held their Annual General Meeting at the Polivalent in Oliva. The AGM was opened by President John Melville, who welcomed 75 members before the U3A Choir gave a short performance. The AGM resumed with the presentation of the last years minutes, which were passed unanimously. John gave the assembly an update on the year’s activities, reporting that membership was going from strength to strength and now stood at 534 member. John also reported that there are now 42 groups running at part of the Oliva U3A. John paid tribute to two committee members stepping down from their roles - Rosa Jones as Groups Coordinator and Alan Robinson asTravel Co-ordinator – before thanking all of the committee for their hard work throughout the year. Following the presentation of the accounts, it was time for the election of the new management committee. As John was not standing for re-election as President, a new

President needed to be elected along with the officers and general committee members. Secretary Mike Dunkley advised the meeting that he had received no contested positions, following this all nominees were accepted unanimously by the assembled membership: President – Mick Goy Vice President – Guy Stratford Mike Dunkley - Secretary Treasurer – Robbie Gordon Membership secretaries – Ron Colcombe, Peta Cole and John Melville Travel co-ordinator – Anja Homberg Group co-ordinator – John Flannigan Webmaster – David McFarlane The new President Mick Goy introduced each member of the new committee individually to the membership, before closing the AGM and wishing everyone a safe journey home.

Ermita del Popul, Javea go ‘Al Fresco’ On Sunday May 14, members of the Ermita del Popul Church, Javea, together with friends and members of other churches within the Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy gathered together at the home of Andrew and Judi Ramsay, for an ‘Al Fresco’ BBQ. Guests were spoiled by both the weather and the meal - chefs Andrew Ramsay and Mike Harvey serving up an assortment of meats whilst ‘sous-chef’ members helped in the preparation and presentation of the salads and desserts. Not a morsel was wasted, with the odd ‘doggybag’ being given to members as they left. A big vote of thanks was afforded to all who helped in such a successful event for the Church, including barman, Terry Ewers, Ex-Warden of Gandia Church, who did a splendid job of ensuring glasses were replenished as and when necessary and of course, Andrew and Judi Ramsay, for their hospitality, which was warmly applauded by all. As with all Church social events a Cava Draw and Raffle was held - the proceeds of which, together with the profit on the meal raised an outstanding €550 for Church funds. Kenny, recent events have shaken my resolve, and I have found myself losing my faith in Spirit. Osteoarthritis, a painful condition in which the tissue between bones wears down, frequently affects people in old age and a new study finds that as many as 4 in 10 people may develop the condition in their hands. Among women, researchers found the lifetime risk was 47 per cent while for men it was about 25 per cent. Obese people also had 11 per cent higher lifetime risk than those who were not obese. Hand osteoarthritis can cause disability and problems with daily living, but is not often a subject of research, the study team writes in the journal Arthritis and Rheumatology. Past research shows the lifetime risk for arthritis of the knee to be 45 per cent and 25 per cent for the hip, they write. ‘These findings indicate that symptomatic hand osteoarthritis is very common and affects a substantial proportion of the population in their lifetimes,’ lead author and epidemiologist at the Centers for

Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Jin Qin told Reuters Health. The researchers analysed data from a study of more than 2,000 people over age 45. The study collected data between 1999 and 2010, using selfreports of arthritis symptoms and X-ray images of the participants’ hands. Based on this group, researchers estimated the proportion of people who will develop osteoarthritis in at least one hand by age 85 to be 39.8 per cent. White people were at greater risk, at 41 per cent, for hand osteoarthritis than black people, with 29 per cent. Obese people had a lifetime risk of 47 per cent, compared to 36 per cent among the non-obese. ‘Some people with hand osteoarthritis have minimal or no symptoms. But for many, symptomatic hand osteoarthritis greatly affects their everyday lives, with few options for improving their symptoms,’ Dr. Fiona Watt, a research lecturer and honorary consultant

rheumatologist at the University of Oxford told Reuters Health. The pain can vary and tends to be worse the more people use their hands, flaring up during daily activity like carrying heavy shopping bags or typing on keyboards or phones, said Watt, who was not involved in the study. ‘Our hands are so important and we need to look after them,’ Watt said, adding that doing aerobic exercise and watching our weight can help protect against all types of osteoarthritis. ‘We know that injury can increase the risk of osteoarthritis,’ Watt said. ‘Although we can’t always prevent hand injuries, wearing supporting and protective gloves in occupations with heavy use of the hand is important.’ Preventing injuries and maintaining a healthy weight may lower the risk of osteoarthritis, Qin said. ‘Earlier diagnosis allows earlier use of interventions (e.g. physical/ occupational therapy), that may help manage symptoms, maintain better function and improve quality of life.’

Elderly warned to watch their salt intake Even more figures are confirming that people are living longer than ever before, but in some areas the downsides outweigh the benefits. In fact, one of the fastest growing demographics is people over the age of 85 who will represent 20% of the population by the year 2040, but because we are living longer, certain conditions specific to ageing are also on a steady rise. Dehydration, falls, fractures, Alzheimer’s and dementia are now becoming more commonplace. In a recent paper titled “Salt Appetite Across Generations” presented at a medical conference in Switzerland. Israeli researchers from the University of Haifa indicated that among seniors, a reduced sense of thirst could increase the increased risk of serious dehydration. They also noted that the appetite for salt does not diminish with age, and suggested that this

could be used to help sustain hydration and prevent the dangerous symptoms that result from dehydration. Another study published identified significant risks to cardiovascular health and longevity from consuming any less than 1 or more than 3 teaspoons of salt per day. Fortunately, most people, when left to their own choice consume right in the middle of this range. Older people living in care homes can be especially susceptible to the dangers of low salt diets. In 2013 a task force of 12 professional medical, nursing, and nutritional organizations assembled by the Pioneer Network published the New Dining Practice Standards. Their report concluded that low salt diets were contributing to malnutrition and weight loss among a significant percentage of elderly people in a range of care facilities. Low salt diets can also cause seniors to suffer

from mild hyponatremia, an electrolyte imbalance in the blood which may not sound bad but can lead directly to walking impairment, attention deficits and a much higher frequency of falls. Several recent medical papers found a direct relationship between hyponatremia and unsteadiness, falls, and subsequent bone fractures. Falls are one of the most serious problems for the elderly and about a third of people over 65 suffer a fall at least once every year. Fall-related injuries in the elderly are associated with numerous psychological and physical consequences and are a leading cause of bone breakage and hip fractures, which can lead to complications and permanent disability or death. Some older people do need a low salt diet but many don’t, and it shouldn’t be assumed that they all do or benefit from when in fact the opposite may be the case.

How to clean your BBQ After you’ve wined and dined your family and friends, it is understandable that the last thing you want to do is spend time cleaning your BBQ. However, it’s a job that’s best to get out of the way as soon as possible rather than leaving until next time, as you’ll find that dirt is much easier to remove if done straight away. Cleaning your BBQ does not need to be a difficult or timeconsuming task, so we’ve compiled some tips to make your BBQ cleaning a breeze. Start by cleaning the cooking grates: 1. Leave your BBQ to cool down for around 30 minutes after switching it off and then if sufficiently cool, tackle the cooking grates, removing them from the BBQ itself. 2. Use a spray bottle of BBQ grate cleaner or a simple mix of soapy water to coat the surface of your cooking grates to degrease and clean. You might want to leave this for a few minutes to soak in to any burnt-on food and soften before brushing. 3. Once soaked, you can use a BBQ brush to get rid of those stubborn bits of food stuck to the grate and brush until completely clean. Now all you need to do is leave this outside to dry and the arduous work is done! Cleaning your gas BBQ: 1. Once you’ve cleaned your BBQ grate, it’s time to move on to the appliance itself. Start the cleaning process by simply turning up the BBQ burners for a couple of minutes to remove any last bits of food that are clinging on to the grill. 2. Next, turn the BBQ off completely then safely disconnect the gas. Lift out the grill parts of your BBQ layer by layer and check that there is nothing lodged within your burners to prevent your BBQ from giving you uneven heat. Afterwards,

use soapy water or grill cleaner with a wire brush to attack any other food remains and rust spots. Cleaning your charcoal BBQ: 1. Once your BBQ is over, wait a sufficient amount of time until the charcoals are cold before you begin cleaning, but do not throw cold water on to the coals. Coals can then be removed ready for a thorough cleaning!

Chelsea Flower Show in full swing Britain's most prestigious flower show has been in full swing this week with hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of floral delights. The highlight of Britain's horticultural calendar, the annual Chelsea Flower Show in London's sprawling Royal Hospital complex features a host of elaborate gardens designed by experts and is famous for its unusual installations. The event is also one of the staples of the city's spring social calendar, with celebrities including media mogul Rupert Murdoch and Oscarwinning actress Judi Dench in attendance this year. The Royal family are also perpetual visitors - the Queen made her annual visit this week and the Duchess of Cambridge was also pictured browsing the blossoms. The show ends tomorrow (Saturday) and organisers said it was expected to attract around 165,000 visitors.

Motor Ombudsman contacted in record numbers The Motor Ombudsman, the automotive dispute resolution provider, has reported a record level of contacts to its dispute resolution service during the first four months of this year, compared to the same period in 2016. The body’s legally-trained and fully-impartial adjudicators, who look to conclude unresolved disputes quickly and fairly between consumers and its accredited businesses, which include thousands of garages across the UK, 39 vehicle manufacturers and 11 warranty providers, received over 11,300 contacts relating to its four Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI)approved Motor Industry Codes of Practice. This equates to a 45% rise versus the same period in 2016. Providing information and assistance to businesses accounted for a further 484 enquiries to April, a 231% jump compared to a year earlier. The Vehicle Sales Code of Practice, which provides detailed guidelines for the sale of both new and used cars, as well as the supply of finance and warranties, saw the highest level of contacts out of any Code in The Motor Ombudsman’s portfolio. As awareness of the Code amongst UK motorists has continually grown following its introduction last September, the number of contacts has averaged over 50 per day since the start of the year, and reached a monthly record of 1,259 last

month. Similarly, The Motor Ombudsman witnessed the highest ever volume in a single four-week period, with April recording 3,343 contacts, rising above the monthly average of 3,259 seen during the first quarter of 2017. The largest source of customer concerns brought to the attention of The Motor Ombudsman since April have related to the quality of a used or new vehicle at the time of purchase, the standard of work carried out, and warranties. An average of 95% of the contacts received every month are successfully concluded without the need for a case to be raised thanks to The Motor Ombudsman’s highly experienced adjudication team. In addition, the volume of cases requiring a legally binding final decision from its in-house ombudsman has ranged between 7% to 14% for the first four months of the year. Holly McAllister, Head of Customer Service and Quality at The Motor Ombudsman, said: “Ever-increasing

awareness amongst consumers and automotive businesses of the value that The Motor Ombudsman offers has resulted in a significant uplift in the level of contacts that we have received since the start of 2017. The arrival of the Vehicle Sales Code has equally meant that we can now formally adjudicate on issues relating to the sale of both of new and used cars.” Holly adds: “Case volumes as a proportion of contacts remain low which demonstrates the great efforts that all parties are going to in order to resolve any disagreements before needing formal adjudication which is very encouraging for all involved.”

Now it’s driverless trucks Governments must consider ways to manage the transition to driverless trucks in order to avoid potential social disruption from job losses, says a new report published by the International Transport Forum (ITF) with three partner organisations. Self-driving trucks will help save costs, lower emissions and make roads safer. They could also address the shortage of professional drivers faced by road transport industry, the study says. But automated trucks could reduce the demand for drivers by 5070% in the US and Europe by 2030, with up to 4.4 million of the projected 6.4 million professional trucking jobs becoming redundant, according to one scenario. Even if the rise of

driverless trucks dissuades newcomers from trucking, over 2 million drivers in the US and Europe could be directly displaced, according to scenarios examined for the report which makes four recommendations to help manage the transition to driverless road freight: 1. Establish a transition advisory board to give advice on labour issues. 2. Consider a temporary permit system to manage the speed of adoption. 3. Set international standards, road rules and vehicle regulations for selfdriving trucks. 4. Continue pilot projects with driverless trucks to test vehicles, network technology and communications protocols. These recommendations were agreed jointly by organisations representing truck manufacturers, truck operators and transport workers’ unions, under the auspices of an intergovernmental organisation. This broad coalition of stakeholders lends the call to action particular weight. The report was prepared jointly by the European Automobile Manufacturers’

Association (ACEA), the International Transport Workers’ Federation and the International Road Transport Union (IRU), the road transport’s industry’s global body, in a project led by the International Transport Forum, a Parisbased intergovernmental organisation linked to the OECD. José Viegas, SecretaryGeneral of the International Transport Forum (ITF) said: “Driverless trucks could be a regular presence on many roads within the next ten years. Self‑driving trucks already operate in controlled environments like ports or mines. Trials on public roads are under way in many regions including the United States and the European Union. Manufacturers are investing heavily into automation, and many governments are actively reviewing their regulations. Preparing now for potential negative social impact of job losses will mitigate the risks in case a rapid transition occurs.” The ITF is an intergovernmental organisation with 57 member countries. The only global body for all modes, it acts

as policy think tank and organises the annual summit of transport ministers. Erik Jonnaert, Secretary General of the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), said: “Harmonisation of rules across countries is critical for maximising the gains from driverless truck technology. Automated trucks are clearly not a national issue, as they should be able to move smoothly across borders. We need international standards, legislation and processes to obtain exemptions from road rules that are appropriate for self-driving trucks. Otherwise we risk having a patchwork of rules and regulations, which could hinder manufacturers and road users from investing in automated vehicles.” ACEA is the advocate for the automobile industry in Europe, representing the 15 major manufacturers of cars, trucks, vans and buses with production sites in the European Union. Christian Labrot, President, International Road Transport Union (IRU), said: “Autonomous trucks will bring many benefits to society, from cost savings and lower emissions to safer roads. Autonomous vehicles

will also help the haulage sector deal with the current shortage of drivers in many parts of the world. However we have to remember the dedicated drivers of today will need to be retrained tomorrow and we must keep attracting professionals into road transport. We all need to work together for a smooth transition to driverless technology.” IRU is the global industry association for road transport, representing truck, bus, coach and taxi operators, with members and activities in more than 100 countries. Steve Cotton, General Secretary of the International Transport Workers’ Federation, said: “Automation in trucking demands a managed and

just transition. We strongly welcome the report’s recommendation that trade unions must be part of any such process. We must avoid excessive hardship for truck drivers and ensure the gains from the technology are fairly shared across society. Self-driving trucks threaten to disrupt the careers and lives of millions of professional truck drivers. This report is a timely investigation into how that transition could happen. Its recommendations will help governments to ensure a just transition for affected drivers.” The International Transport Workers’ Federation is a global association of around 700 unions representing over 4.5 million transport workers from some 150 countries.

Huge week of rugby in Villajoyosa

Following on from the excitement of La Vila Rugby Club’s promotion to the Spanish Division Of Honour Premier league last Sunday, the club is preparing to welcome teams from all over the world, arriving for the famous La Vila Rugby 7’s competition. Last weekend’s breathless second leg tie against UBU Burgos, saw the club defeated on the day, but ultimately win the much anticipated promotion to the Spanish top flight, courtesy of their first leg victory in the North. At one point, la Vila were almost dead and buried, down by 3 points to 13 to Burgos, but dug deep to pull back to 8-13 in the 79th minute. With the 1500 fans on the edge of their seats a try brought the two sides

agonizingly close on aggregate, meaning that a conversion would ensure La Vila’s promotion. So, with nerves of steel, up stepped the calm figure of Argentinian Matias Jara to make the 87th conversion and seal a one point aggregate victory. This was actually the first defeat of the whole season for the side nicknamed the Joneses, but never has a defeat been celebrated so wildly, as they look forward to a return to the premier division next season. For Burgos, there is some consolation, as they still have an opportunity to progress to the top flight via a play off. For local rugby fans, attention now turns to the upcoming La Vila Rugby 7’s competition this weekend at the Villajoyosa club. With teams arriving in the town

from as far away as China and Kazakhstan, along with British, Spanish and Belgian sides, the competition, now in it’s 31st year, is sure to be as thrilling as ever. The matches are played on Saturday and Sunday June 3 and 4 with games beginning at 11.00am each day. Bittersweet victory for Altea Rowing Club The womens Veteran Rowing team from Altea Club Nautico, beat off all rivals to win the gold medal at the National Rowing Championships of Spain, held in Tarragona last weekend, but the club faces an uncertain future. In the largest field ever, over 900 rowers from 35 different towns and cities took part in the biggest competition of it’s type, with representation from federations in Valencia, Galicia, Andalucia, Catalonia and the Basque country. The remarkable result was the fruit born from the years of experience, hard work and team spirit engendered by this team of veterans. Following their bronze medal in last year’s championships, this was the ultimate prize and was the icing on the cake of a season in which they have already won silver and bronze in two regional competitions. Particularly special for the girls was that they beat fellow Marina Alta rivals Oliva into second place. This was something a bittersweet victory for the Altea Rowing Club, because even though the sport is growing in popularity, as witnessed by the record entries at the Tarragona event, funding by the regional government has stopped. "We are very happy with the results achieved in this championship from the teams of the Altea Nautical Club, who have performed at a high level, but at the same time we are also concerned about the continuity of this sport, which is hanging on a tight rope, "said Vicente Jorro, head of the rowing at the Altea Yacht Club. Currently twenty-one Club Nautico’s in the Valencia region, including Altea are in dispute with the regional government over the administration of their concessions, which are due to run out in June. Currently, these non profit organisations run on temporary concessions, which makes for a precarious existence as they are unable to plan for the future.

Hamza (1-45-6) from the other end was a little costly but gained the breakthrough when Garvey (10) nicked one behind to Bhatti. Morgan entered the play and lived a charmed life for a few balls before getting to grips with the surrounds reaching a very stylish 27 before nicking one from Spanish and Club captain Muñoz again well taken by Bhatti. Pickford on 72 also fell to Muñoz this time well caught by the bowler who took the ball over the stumps at his own end when it returned from visiting the Moon.

Just 15 runs later and the guile of Taylor did for Hunt (26) when over stretching and lofting the ball to Alger in the midwicket region. Ravinshanker danced down the track a few times before being snaffled by Laundon at short mid wicket again Taylor doing the damage. Muqual became Muñoz´s third victim well caught by Liaqat diving forwards at silly mid on. Murphy hung around with Abbas whilst he went on the rampage hitting a might 78 which included 3 maximums and 9 fours. Murphy getting bowled by Liaqat´s last ball of his second spell, finishing with 1-43-9. Burchill stood and watched Abbas spank the ball to all corners and gently put the ball in a gap to keep the hitter on strike. 276 full bonus points and SACC only gaining 3 points in the first half. Alfas pair Laundon and Pennick walked out to start the run chase, the openers

playing very nicely as the 50 came up in the 10th over and 82 runs on the board by the 15th. 100 runs reached by the 20th and the game beginning to favour the home side. At the 30 over both openers had reached 70+ but with only 110 needed decided to give the other batsmen a go and Laundon (76) chipped one back to Ravishanker then Pennick miscued and followed. This bringing together Alger and Muñoz who inexplicably walked across a full toss from Abbas and was bowled. Bhatti joined Alger and the finishers started about the bowlers with a relish which brings the crowd to the Woodbridge Oval. Alger reaching 44 and Bhatti 54 to give SACC another victory over the Valencia team. A brilliant 18 points for Alfas and only 6 for the visitors who must have thought today was the change in fortune they had desired.

Schindler’s heaven Huddersfield town win a 185 million pound penalty shoot out, in a match widely billed as the most lucrative game of the season. German Christian Schindler scored the decisive spot kick to send Huddersfield Town back to the top flight of English football for the first time in 45 years, with a 4-3 victory over Reading on penalties. Huddersfield last appeared in the top division when Ted Heath was prime minister and T-Rex were top of the charts and only last season they finished 19th in the Championship. But in a few short months time, this modest group of players will take their place alongside football giants Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City in the most famous league in the World, the English Premier league. With a budget of 185 million pounds from TV rights for the winning team, the championship play-off was a tense, nervous affair for both Huddersfield and opponents Reading, who had more recent memories of the premier league, having been relegated in 2013. The stakes made the drama gripping even if the action became scruffy. Neither goalkeeper made a save until just after half-time, when John Swift burst from midfield and unleashed a powerful drive from 20 yards that Ward batted away. After 90 minutes the teams remained deadlocked, the suspense thrillingly hard to bear. Garath McCleary produced gasps in the dying moments of the first period of extra-time when he fired just wide from the edge of the box. Five minutes from the end of the second period Kasey Palmer delivered a low cross from the right to Nahki Wells, who swivelled near the penalty spot before dragging a shot wide. And so the contest progressed to the ultimate tie-breaker.

Barcelona have appointed Ernesto Valverde as their head coach on a two-year deal, with an option for a third. Former Barca forward Valverde announced last week that he was leaving Athletic Bilbao after four years in charge. He replaces Luis Enrique, who revealed in March that he would leave the club - who finished second in La Liga - at the end of his three-year contract. Enrique led Barcelona to the treble in his first season, the domestic double in 2016 and the Copa del Rey this year. They beat Alaves 3-1 in Sunday's final - his last match in charge. Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu praised 53-year-old Valverde's "ability, judgement, knowledge and experience", adding: "He promotes young players and he plays the Barca way." Valverde has the credentials to be successful. He is an experienced and intelligent coach with good organisational and communication skills, implementing a fast-paced style of play which earned the regular approval of the most important figure in the club's history, his former manager Johan Cruyff. Apart from Athletic Bilbao, he has also managed Villarreal, Valencia and Barça’s city rivals Espanyol in a varied coaching career that included two years in Greece with Olympiakos. Valverde also had a two-year spell as a Barcelona player in the late 1980s and will now return to the Camp Nou after a 27-year absence. Despite those plus points, however, Valverde will receive little more than a lukewarm welcome from many fans, who are sceptical of his abilities to master the internal politics inherent at such a huge club. There are fears that his understated personality will see him become a 'yes man' to an increasingly unpopular board of directors, lacking the strength of character to reinvigorate a team who have been treading water for too long. When Luis Enrique announced his decision to resign, a poll over the identity of the new coach by newspaper Mundo Deportivo saw Valverde receive just 8.4% of the votes (Jorge Sampaoli came first), so it's clear his arrival is not being universally acclaimed. It doesn't help that his final season in Bilbao yielded a pretty disappointing seventh-place finish and an embarrassing Europa League exit against Cypriot minnows Apoel Nicosia. If he doesn't make a good start, patience will be in short supply.

The fairytale promotion has the potential to transform the Yorkshire club whose budget this season was “much less than [the reported] £12m”, according to Wagner. However, Woods says alcohol was "not involved" in his arrest while driving in Florida early on Monday. The player, who was charged with Driving Under the Influence (DUI), blamed "an unexpected reaction to prescribed medication". "I understand the severity of what I did and I take full responsibility for my actions," he said. Police released the mugshot of Woods, looking unshaven and unkempt, following his arrest in the town of Jupiter. "I want the public to know that alcohol was not involved. What happened was an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications," he said. "I didn't realise the mix of medications had affected me so strongly." He added: "I would like to apologise with all my heart to my family, friends and the fans. I expect more from myself too." Police records show the 41-year-old golfer was pulled over at about 03:00 local time near his home in Jupiter and later taken into custody. He was released from Palm Beach County jail at 10:30 local time. The record says that he was released "on his own recognisance", meaning he promised in writing to co-operate with future legal proceedings. Woods has been recovering from back surgery. In his most recent comment about his health, he wrote that the surgery had relieved terrible pain and that he hadn't "felt this good in years". The 14-time major champion's personal life came under scrutiny in 2009 when he was charged with careless driving outside his Florida home. He later admitted to having had extra-marital affairs and made a frank public apology. He said he had received professional help and planned to undergo further therapy. The golfer lost several sponsors over the scandal and took a break from competitive competition. This latest picture will haunt him throughout these proceedings and beyond. This is someone who has put back together his public life after that epic fall from grace with all the news of the extramarital affairs that broke in 2009.
