Guardia Civil officers from Alicante have detained a fifty eight year old man suspected of stealing around 350,000 euros during a string of armed robberies from banks throughout the Alicante and Murcia regions over the past four years. The revolvers recovered from the suspect were Smith and Wesson 357 Magnum’s as used by Clint Eastwood in the movie ‘Dirty Harry’, famous for it’s long cannon and large velocity. He and his partner and accomplice, a 48 year old woman, who was also detained were arrested in Hondon del los Frailes, last week after being on the police wanted list since 2013. When arrested, the couple were in possession of two firearms, three boxes of compatible ammunition, some 50,000 euros in cash, and hoods to cover the head whilst conducting the thefts. The banks where the armed robberies took place were El Siscar, and El Raa in the Murcia region. Whilst in Alicante the thefts were committed in Granja de Rocamora, Monforte del Cid, Raiguero de Bonanza, Sax, and La Murada, The proceeds from the final robbery in La Murada, the last of their activities was almost 80,000 euros. The suspects were known to have spent many weeks watching and observing the activities of the bank branches they identified. His modus operandi was always the same, he entered the branch office and engaged in conversation with an employee. During the conversation, he calmly took the weapon out and threatened the clerk by pointing and demanding the money often requesting the bank teller tie the money with plastic tags. Most of the robberies were conducted without a hood and bank staff who witnessed the armed thefts were particularly intimidated by his calm demeanour and the way he tapped the revolver on his knee whilst they prepared the cash for him. He targeted quiet bank branches in small villages and out of the way locations, with little traffic and always changed his appearance between the thefts. During the robberies he wore long hair and beard and a thick pair of glasses, after which he would shave hair and face and remove the glasses, to avoid identification by police. Continued on page 4

Two caught red-handed in Mazarron robbery

by Tahnee Wright Officers of Murciaâ€™s Guardia Civil stopped and arrested two robbers in their tracks earlier this week as they attempted to loot a house in Mazarron. The owner of a holiday home in Puerto de Mazarron came home to spot two young people in his property. The home owner called the Guardia Civil and officers arrived at the scene within minutes. The robbers appeared to have accessed the balcony using a ladder and entered the property through a sliding window. They already had in their hands various appliances and ornamental items belonging to the home owner that they had intended on stealing. After indentifying the robbers â€“ one, a 35-year-old Spanish man from Beniel with a criminal record and the other, a minor, officers proceeded to arrest both of them. The older robber has since been found to have robbed a property in the same area at the end of last year.

Nicola Kuhn lands first pro title at 17 Torrevieja tennis sensation Nicola Kuhn has joined the elite list of juniors to win a men's professional title – just two months after his 17th birthday. by Tahnee Wright Kuhn, youngest player in the entire draw, thrashed Davis Cup star Attila Balasz 7-5 6-0 in a one-sided final to take the $15,000 Hungary F2 Futures crown on the shores of picturesque Lake Balaton. Top-seed Balasz, 11 years older than the 6ft 1in Kuhn and seven times champion of Hungary, had no answer to Nico's versatility and confidence as the Spanish teenager powered to victory in just 104 minutes. Over the previous four days, unseeded Kuhn had seen off four other experienced east European pros, all of them at least three years his senior, Saturday's glorious achievement came just two weeks after Nico produced the shock of the Mutua Madrid Open in beating world number 61 Nikoloz Basilashvili 7-5 6-0 in the qualifying competition.

Tha Basilashvili win catapulted him exactly 100 places up the ATP ladder to world number 612 – and the 18 ranking points he earned for Saturday's Futures victory in Hungary will lift him to the fringe of the top 500 when next week's rankings are announced. Kuhn, who has targeted a top 200 ranking by the end of this year, has been virtually unstoppable of late and becomes only the second player born this century to win a pro title. He began the year as the world's fifth-ranked junior, but is now concentrating on climbing the ATP rankings list and thus avoiding the qualifying rat-race at senior level. Great result for local parent’s association The Councillor for Education, Relations with Universities and Heritage, Rafael Gomez, visited the Antonio Delgado Dorrego and Sangonera la Verde schools last week after the parent association announced its intention to protest over the state of the facilities. Gomez wanted to witness the problems first-hand and confirmed that repair works both to the schools and their sports facilities totalling €60,000 will begin in the school holidays.

The suspect had spent previous time in prison for theft, which police believe gave him the information he needed to conduct the robberies, whilst his father had also served time in prison for similar crimes. At the time of their arrest, they had over 50,000 euros that police believe were stolen only 48 hours before from a bank in the town of La Murada. The two revolvers used for the robberies, and diverse clothes used in them were found at the couple’s home later. After their arrest, the man was detained in custody without bail, whilst the woman was released on probation.

Orihuela road resurfacing by Andy Mansell Work has begun during the last week, to resurface the roads of Orihuela town, as the first of a four phase programme taking place across the next few weeks. This first phase is being carried out in areas where there are serious shortcomings in the pavements and walkways and where road traffic is busiest at peak times. The initial work will take in the public streets of Salvador Dalí in the area of PAU3 and the street Carretera de Villamartín. The city councillor for beaches of the city of Orihuela, Luisa Boné, has advised that if everything goes as planned, these works are expected to be completed in two weeks and the cost of this asphalting is €60,303.01 (IVA included) on an area of 6,540 m2. "The work to be carried out is the renewal of the surface with an asphalt agglomerate and the application of a compacted base layer. Then, where necessary, the manhole covers will be raised and the road markings, which will disappear due to the asphalting of the new road surface, will be renewed" Luisa Boné said. The next resurfacing phase will start approximately a week after the initial phase is complete.

Bus driver arrested six times over the limit

The Department of Education suspended classes at the Instituto Numero 1 Libertas of Torrevieja on Wednesday whilst technicians examined cracks that were found throughout the building earlier this week. All 700+ students at the oldest school in Torrevieja had the day off on Wednesday as there was no physical space to relocate classes. Classes resumed as normal on Thursday.

Forest fire in Galifa

A passer-by alerted 112 to high flames in the forests of Galifa, on the carretera del Portus at around 7.00pm on Saturday. A helicopter with a forestry brigade and technicians was dispatched, along with Policia Local officers, and environmental experts. A forestry brigade from Mazarron and firefighters from the SIX of Cartagena were also flown to the site.

Officers of the Murcian Guardia Civil stopped a bus carrying 40 chinese tourists on the A-7 motorway last week and the driver tested over six times over the limit. The bus, which was travelling from Granada to Valencia, was intercepted at around 5.30pm on Wednesday as it passed through Librilla. A service station employee notified the Guardia Civil of the inebriated state of the driver after he had used the facilities at the service station. The driver was subject to mandatory blood alcohol tests in which he tested over six times (1.02 milligrams) over the limit (0.15 milligrams) for professional drivers. He was arrested at the scene. Agents of Murcia’s Sector de Trafico remained with the passengers, reassuring them of the situation before a company local to Molina de Segura sent a bus for them to continue on their journey to Valencia.

Euromanga residents forced out of homes

by Tahnee Wright Residents of the Euromanga building in Murcia were forced to leave their homes on Wednesday morning at 9.00am as Policia Local officers arrived to facilitate their eviction. Residents were expecting of the situation since the court recently granted City Hall a green light for its evacuation, due to the poor state in which it is in. In a statement to the Spanish press, Manuel Rodriguez, an 82-year-old man from Madrid who has been resident of the building for more than 20 years explained that although his intention was to hold out until officers forced him out, he understood that he â€˜had no choice but to leave the building.â€™ At the moment, he added, he has been housed temporarily by social services in a studio in Santiago de la Ribera and hopes to return to the building once maintenance works have been carried out.

Woman drowns off the Mar Menor

A 63-year-old woman drowned on Friday as she swam in the sea off Galua Beach in La Manga del Mar Menor. A passer-by alerted 112 to a body floating face down in the sea, around 20-30 metres from the shore. Civil Protection officers we dispatched, along with lifeguards in a boat from the Club Nautical La Isleta, an ambulance, firemen of the SEIS of the City Council of Cartagena and officers from the Polica Local of Cartgena and the Guardia Civil. The woman was pulled unconscious from the water and resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.

Son appeals for help to bring dad home

by Andy Mansell Retired lecturer John Telfer, from East Calder, West Lothian, was injured in a horror crash whilst on a cycling holiday in Alicante over two weeks ago. The accident happened when he came off his bike after crashing into a friend who had been unseated by hitting a raised tree root. He broke his neck in two places in the crash and was transferred to hospital with very little chance of survival. He was in a coma for two weeks and now has pneumonia and whilst his family insist he is receiving excellent care, the language barrier and the distance from home are creating problems. His son Gregg said yesterday: “He wasn’t expected to survive to the end of that day – but he’s still fighting for his life.“My dad has now been fighting for his life for 18 days and is currently critical in ICU in a highly Spanish-speaking hospital.“He has no vocal cords due to tracheostomy and cannot move from the neck down to show us his needs

or emotions.“The care is fantastic within La Ribera hospital and we owe his life to them but the language barrier is so tough and we need to try and get him home as soon as they release him to us.”John was on holiday with his wife and was due to return home the day after his horrific accident.“Unfortunately on the morning of May 4, I received a panicked call from my mum just after the accident had happened.” Said Gregg. He added: “My dad has friends all over the world and they’ve set up a fundraising page in the hope we can transfer him by air ambulance to Scotland.“It can cost between £20,000 and £30,000 and the type of insurance my parents have doesn’t cover them for this.”Family friend Jo Pugh, who has set up the donation page, said: “While delighted with the specialist care John has received, the family are keen to return him to Scotland to a specialist spinal unit to begin stabilisation and recovery, with all close family there to support. Manchester attack probe widens with arrests in Libya by Tahnee Wright The father of the suicide bomber who killed at least 22 people, including some children at Manchester Arena on Monday evening, identified as Salman Abedi, told Reuters in the Libyan capital on Wednesday that he had last spoken to his son some five days ago by phone and ‘everything was normal’. Police made arrests in the UK and Libya as the investigation focused on tracking down a network of accomplices who authorities fear could strike again. Ramadan Abedi, who was detained by a Tripoli counter-terrorism force during the interview, said his son Salman had told his family that he was heading on a pilgrimage to Mecca. ‘I spoke to him about five days ago ... there was nothing wrong, everything was normal,’ Abedi said. Abedi also said he was sure Salman had not been a member of Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). ‘Salman doesn't belong to any organisation,’ he said. ‘The family is a bit confused because Salman doesn't have this ideology, he doesn't hold these beliefs. We con-

demn these terrorist acts on civilians, innocent people.’ Police in Tripoli also arrested a brother of Abedi. A spokesman for the local counter-terrorism force said younger brother Hashem Abedi was arrested on suspicion of links with ISIL and was suspected of planning to carry out an attack in the Libyan capital. A man arrested on Tuesday was reported by British and US media to be Abedi's other brother. Manchester police, meanwhile, made several new arrests. ‘As it stands, six men and one woman have been arrested in conjunction with the investigation and remain in custody for questioning,’ a police statement said. Earlier, interior minister Amber Rudd said the bomber had recently returned from Libya. Her French counterpart Gerard Collomb said he had links with ISIL and had probably visited Syria as well. Rudd also scolded US officials for leaking details about the investigation into the Manchester attack before British authorities were ready to go public. The bomb used in the attack appeared to contain carefully packed

shrapnel and have a powerful, high velocity charge, according to leaked photographs from the investigation published by the New York Times. The official threat level in Britain was raised late on Tuesday for the first time in a decade to its highest level, ‘critical’, meaning an attack could be imminent. British Prime Minister Theresa May chaired a meeting of the government's Cobra emergency response committee at her Downing Street office.

Rudd said up to 3,800 soldiers could be deployed on Britain's streets, taking on guard duties to free up police to focus on patrols and investigation. An initial deployment of 984 had been ordered, first in London and then elsewhere. Soldiers were seen at the Houses of Parliament, May's Downing Street residence and at the London police headquarters at New Scotland Yard. It was the deadliest attack in Britain since July 2005, when four British Muslim suicide bombers killed

52 people in coordinated attacks on London's transport network. The Manchester bombing also left 64 people wounded, of whom 20 were receiving critical care for highly traumatic injuries to major organs and to limbs. All campaigning for Britain’s national election coming up on June 8 has been suspended since the bombing. Coverage of the attack and its aftermath has pushed out political news from the British media.

Migrants enter Spain posing as third division footballers North and Sub-Saharan African migrants made their way illegally into Spain wearing the football strips of AD Ceuta, a third division x side, based in the Spanish enclave on the coast of Morocco, according to National Police who have broken up a human-trafficking racket which dressed illegal immigrants as football players to get them through the border into Spain. Other teams in their league include teams from Sevilla, Cadiz, Huelva and Cordoba, resulting in frequent trips to the Spanish mainland for the players of the Ceuta team. Officers saw a man wearing the official tracksuit for AD Ceuta on board a ship heading from the city to mainland Spain, but found he was not one of the team, nor its staff. And on checking his national ID card, they found he was not who he claimed to be, nor was he a Spanish citizen. The man in question claimed a member of the club had sold him the ID card for €1,000. Police traced the only member of the team who was not wearing the official strip and arrested him along with another woman who was said to be in charge of keeping the illegal migrant under wraps at her home before he was helped on board the ferry.A third person who had been accompanying the migrant was also arrested. The three taken into custody, a woman aged 32

and two men aged 23 and 34, were all born in Ceuta and had Spanish passports, and the immigrant was Moroccan and aged 19. Ismael M., 23, is a player with AD Ceuta and issued a statement before the press saying he 'accepted his responsibility' for the situation and wanted to clear the club's name. Revealing he had been suspended from the team, Ismael said his 'error' was 'not telling the club he had a problem' because he 'got scared'. He added that he 'would die for his team' and that he 'thanked' them for their support.Chairman of AD Ceuta Luhay Hamido says the issue would be resolved inhouse and the club would not give any further comment, other than to say Ismael had been 'suspended, not fired'. It is thought the trio involved may have pulled the same stunt on more than one occasion.

Police fear At least 20 migrants killed in blue whale sinking off Mediterranean coast game in girls suicide bid National police in Murcia have seized computers and mobile phones belonging to two young girls from Molina del Segura who they believe entered into a suicide pact as part of the sinister online ‘Blue Whale’ game. As the investigation is under way, information is limited as the girls were not even teenagers. All the investigating officers, working for the GRUME childrens unit, were able to reveal is that the two girls were both under the age of 12 and appeared to have entered into a suicide pact. Both the girls had superficial cuts to their arms, however sources close to their school suggested they had talked to their classmates about their intention to commit suicide.As the self harm had occurred on more than one occasion, a teacher at the school, following Ministry of Education protocol brought it to the attention of higher authorities, who subsequently informed police, social services and the children’s families.When questioned separately, the girls both admitted they were aware of the ‘Blue Whale’ phenomenon, even at their young age. Little is known about the sinister game which surfaced in Russia in 2013 as it is conducted through closed groups on facebook and other social media sites. It reportedly consists of a series of tasks assigned to players by administrators during a 50-day period, with the final challenge allegedly requiring the player to commit suicide.Photos have emerged via the internet of mostly young girls being set challenges to carve the figure of a blue whale onto their skin in a series of stages.Murcian Investigators and social services professionals will now analyse the phones, tablets and computers seized from the girls homes and interview other family members to determine the reasons behind their actions. They were both living in extended families and had regular access to computers and other devices without supervision.The Murcian Ministry of Education issued a statement saying that as yet, there has been no evidence that the ‘Blue Whale’ game has entered the classrooms of the region. Whilst the investigation continues the police have issued a warning to parents to be aware of the phenomenon and to monitor their young and teenage childrens online behaviour as closely as possible.

by Tahnee Wright At least 20 migrants including young children drowned on Wednesday when they fell off an overloaded vessel in the Mediterranean, the Italian coastguard and a humanitarian worker said. ‘There's a critical situation today (Wednesday). About 200 people fell into the water and for the moment we have 20 bodies,’ a coastguard spokesman told AFP. The migrants were on a wooden boat carrying between 500 and 700 people and were just 20 nautical miles off the Libyan

coast when the accident happened. The crew of the Phoenix aid boat, chartered by the Maltese NGO Moas, had begun the rescue and were distributing lifejackets when many of those on deck fell into the water, perhaps knocked off balance by a wave. ‘It's not a scene from a horror movie, it's a real-life tragedy that is taking place today at the gates of Europe,’ said Chris Catrambone, Moas co-founder, who was aboard the Phoenix and published photos showing dozens of migrants in the water.

With the help of an Italian coast guard ship and several commercial ships, rescuers raced to drag as many people as possible from the water, while a helicopter and military aircraft dropped lifeboats. ‘There are still about 30 corpses floating in the area, many are young children,’ Catrambone added. In total, about 15 relief operations were underway Wednesday off Libya, the coast guard said without being able to give a total for the number of migrants involved.

Motorbike collides with car in Torrevieja

Two motorcyclists were taken to the Hospital of Torrevieja in the early hours of Wednesday morning after their bike collided with a car. The Emergency Information and Coordination Center (Cicu) was notified of the accident - which took place on calle Fuensanta - at around 4.15am. A SAMU ambulance and Basic Life Support Unit (SVB) was dispatched to the scene, where a 35-year-old man suffered joint pain and contusion in the face and head and a 27-year-old man suffered polytrauma and injuries to the brain.

The Spanish bank of Mama y Papa is now closed by Andy Mansell In northern Spain, a judge has turned down the demand of a 23-year-old woman to continue receiving her parents' financial support, ruling that she is "too lazy to earn a living". Family bonds are traditionally highly valued in Spain and this decision marks a contrast with many previous rulings in which parents have been obliged to support their offspring long after they become adults, and even into their 30s. Spain's crippling economic crisis has caused youth unemployment to soar, meaning most young people rely on their parents for many years after leaving school.The average age at which Spaniards leave home has risen to 29, almost nine years later than the average Swede, according to Eurostat. The unnamed 23 year old, from the seaside town of Castro Urdiales, went to the Cantabrian provincial court to demand maintenance of €300 a month from her father. The woman's parents had separated in 2012 and there had been no mention of child support in their settlement.The court noted that the woman had not completed secondary education but she had received money from her parents to pay for IT courses that she had not managed to complete. Legal precedent in Spain holds that parents are obliged to provide for their children until they reach economic independence. But the judges ruled that this responsibility does not apply if the child's behaviour prevents them from getting on in life.In this instance, the woman's conduct was "legally classifiable as one of abandonment, laziness and failure to take advantage". In a similar vein, a court in Catalonia last year told a 19 year old, who was neither in work nor studying, that his parents were not obliged to support his "capricious lifestyle", effectively booting him on to the street. The president of the Spanish family law association, Maria Dolores Lozano, says parents are increasingly seeking legal help.

Judges are also drawing attention to the large numbers of young Spaniards who have moved abroad to find work, when they consider whether or not a child has options to support themselves, she adds. The reality in Spain is that these cases are by no means the whole of the story.Clara is 33 years old, able-bodied and has a master's degree. And yet an appeal court in the north-western province of Galicia has ruled her father must continue to pay her an allowance of €450 a month while she seeks a job in keeping with her education."The really unprecedented thing about this case is that the support is open-ended," says Rosario Bello, Clara's legal representative. So it could become a kind of pension for life."There is no set rule on how long parents must support their children, but the late 20s used to mark the limit, allowing a person to get support while they studied for a degree and maybe a master's degree before entering the labour market," Ms Bello explains. "It is the crisis that has led to this change."Despite Spain's economic recovery over the past two years, unemployment among under-30s remains stubbornly high at 43%. The figure is so high partly because many young Spaniards continue studying throughout much of their 20s. But the shocking reality is that fewer than 40% of

The Mayor of Torrevieja visited Gay Friendly establishments in the city last Saturday to enquire as to whether they would like to be part of the guide. The idea was extremely well received and the local establishments will also get involved in various events throughout the city such as a ‘Drag Queen Gala’ to be held at ‘Torrevieja Pride 2017’ on Thursday June 22.

In the report, entitled "Low education level, low labour participation", author Begoña Cueto of Oviedo University explains why a lack of skills and chronic unemployment are so inextricably linked. Of the one in three 25- to 34-year-olds who did not complete secondary education, many dropped out of school and took up unskilled work during Spain's construction boom in the decade leading up to the 2008 financial crash. "One of the key challenges facing our system is to reduce the school dropout rate, regardless of the economic situation," she argues. Because after drifting out of school, into work and then out of employment, many young Spaniards are stuck at home, straining their country's long and proud tradition of family solidarity.

More workers on the job in Orihuela Orihuela environment councillors, responsible for services on the coast, Luisa Bone and Juan Ignacio Lopez-Bas, recently visited renewal and maintenance works in various parts of the municipality to assess the time required to complete the project. During the viewings they revealed that they are anxious to complete the work before the busy summer season arrives and announced a plan to reinforce the workforce currently deployed on the action plan for the parks and gardens of Orihuela Costa. The extra staff are necessary as the council need to maintain and renew more green areas than they initially assumed and therefore the reinforced workforce will be active at least until the end of May in view of the fact that the summer season will start soon. Lopez-Bas pointed out that: “Given the state of the coastal parks, it was decided to temporarily employ two groups of personnel from the maintenance department on the coast,” He said, “one group, consisting of four people, will take care of the parks and gardens and the other, also of four people, will carry out repair works.” Luisa Bone explained that, “ A strengthening of the coastal staff from the environment department was necessary, as we are just before the summer season and Orihuela Costa is gradually getting filled with returning residents and tourists."

Four climbers found dead on Everest by Tahnee Wright Four climbers have been found dead in their tents on Mount Everest, officials said on Wednesday, with suspicion they died of carbon monoxide poisoning, taking the death toll on the world's highest mountain to 10 in the past month. The four climbers were found in two tents at Camp Four, at 8,000 metres (26,246 feet), overnight by Nepali sherpas. It was not clear how they died and their identities have not yet been established. The Himalayan Times reported that two of the dead were foreigners and rescuers believed they had suffocated. ‘It is most likely they died from carbon monoxide poisoning by using their stoves in the tent without proper ventilation,’ U.S. climber Alan Arnette, who blogs on Everest, said in a post. The sherpas who discovered the bodies were on their way to retrieve the body of Vladimir Strba of Slovakia who died near the 8,850 metre (29,035 feet) summit at the weekend. Strba's body has been brought down to Camp Two at 6,400 metres (21,000 feet) and was expected to be brought down to base camp later on Wednesday. More than 5,000 climbers have scaled Mount Everest since it was first climbed by New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay in 1953 and nearly 300 have died trying. Many of the victims remain on the mountain, entombed in snow, as it is too difficult to bring their bodies down. Exhaustion, exposure, frostbite, falls and

altitude sickness are major causes of death on Everest but the biggest killer in recent years has been avalanches. Eighteen people were killed in 2015 when a 7.8 magnitude earthquake triggered avalanches that smashed into the base camp. A year earlier, 16 sherpas hauling gear to higher camps for climbers were killed when they were hit by an avalanche while they were crossing the treacherous Khumbu Icefall, just above base camp. Climbers can ascend Everest from the Nepal side and the Chinese side. One of the 10 deaths this month has been on the Chinese side. Nepal has issued permits to 371 foreign climbers this season, up from last year's 281, each of which cost $11,000 (€9,830). In addition, hundreds of sherpas are climbing the mountain, or helping others to. Permit fees are a major source of income for cash-strapped Nepal which earned more than $4 million (€3.57 million) this year from Everest permits, officials said. The climbing season closes at the end of May when the rainy season traditionally begins, bringing cloud and snow at high altitudes.

24 illegal immigrants arrested in Torre Pacheco

Police arrested 24 illegal immigrants from Pakistan, India and Morrocco in Torre Pacheco, accused of falsifying documents to register as residents in Spain. A local 60-year-old developer and builder was also arrested after officers found he had been charging €300 per person to each of the immigrants in return for ‘registration’ at one of his various properties. The immigrants, after being registered by the local, accessed different public benefits such as healthcare. The investigation began two months ago, when ‘an unusual number of foreign citizens, mainly from Pakistan, India and Morocco, registered in the same building’ of Torre Pacheco were detected.

Brazilian and Romanian arrested in Cartagena port

by Andy Mansell One was wanted for attempting to introduce cocaine into Europe on a sailing yacht and the other for several crimes against property The two seperate arrests were conducted recently by police monitoring activities and movements of boats coming into and leaving Cartagena port. In accordance with European directives, National Police carry out exhaustive controls of people arriving on board boats in all areas of the port, both the commercial and pleasure harbours, in order to guarantee legal entry to the Spanish territory. As a result of co-operation between Europol and Interpol, agents detained two men, arriving on boats who had warrants issued against them in Brazil and Romania. The Brazilian, travelling on a yacht registered in Portugal was detained via information from Interpol. The detainee was part of an international organization dedicated to drug trafficking

between Brazil and Portugal. In 2015 he participated in the transfer of between 70 and 100 kilos of cocaine, hidden inside a yacht. The man was part of a criminal gang based in the Brazilian region of Baixada, dedicated to drug trafficking, according to sources of the National Police. Although the man was travelling with a fake passport, the police were suspicious and uncovered his real identity. Similarly, the Romanian was a member of the crew of a merchant ship and was in possession of two different passports. Both men have been detained by the National police awaiting extradition to their home countries. Over the past year controls were carried out on the 3,500 vessels that docked in Cartagena, both recreational and merchant. In addition, the crew and passengers of a hundred and twenty one cruise ships arriving in the port have been monitored and checked for legality.

Couple held at razor-point for iPhone 6s in Murcia Murcia LOCAL Police arrested two men who threatened a couple with a razor before stealing one of their mobile phones. The men approached the couple at 1.00am on Tuesday on the Plaza de Europa in Murcia. They intimidated the couple with a razor before one of them gave up their mobile phone â€“ an iPhone 6s. The couple called the police, providing a description of the two men and within five minutes, the suspects were located on the Paseo Concejal Hermenegildo Lumeras de Castro, near Ronda de Levante. Officers proceeded to identify the suspects â€“ a 44year-old and an 18-year-old, both of Spanish nationality and residents of Murcia â€“ before arresting them and transferring them to the San Andres District Commissariat. The stolen phone was found on the elder of the suspects and returned to the couple.

Over 63 million euros for Murcian school dinners Figures announced by the Murcian Government this week, reveal that the ministry of education will spend 65.4€ million on providing subsidised meals and transport for children within the region over the next school year. They have allocated a total of 63,843,000 euros towards free or subsidised school lunches for qualifying families. In addition they will spend an further 1,633,510 euros on free and subsidised school buses, which they estimate benefit 60,000 pupils in the region. This year the ministry have made amendments to the application systems for receiving grants regarding subsidised school meals and transport for all sectors of education from primary through to further education. The application deadline for the next school year is next Thursday June 1, but the parents of children who already qualified for the subsidies during the last school year, will not have to complete a new application. Instead, for the first time, they only have to prove that their economic circumstances are unchanged since their previous application was accepted and the quicker enrollment can be processed within the schools where the children are currently educated.

Free diabetes testing in Torrevieja and Murcia by Andy Mansell The Quironsalud hospitals in Torreviejia and Murcia will be conducting free testing for diabetes next Monday May 29, between the times of 9.00am and 11.00am to coincide with World Nutrition Day, which falls on Sunday. Obesity, physical inactivity and poor nutrition increase the number of obese and diabetic people every year. People are unaware of the fatal consequences of this chronic disease as diabetes is a condition that is triggered when the body does not produce enough insulin or does not use it effectively. There are several types: Type 1 diabetes is the most common childhood disease. The pancreas does not produce insulin, so an excess of blood sugar is created, which makes it necessary to provide the body with injected insulin. According to Oscar Boullosa, coordinator of the Diabetes Unit of the Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja, "type 2 diabetes is the most common, 90% of diabetic patients suffer with this type, they are generally over 40 years old, and their body does not produce enough insulin to take advantage of glucose or are resistant to it. These individuals require a balanced diet and exercise.” This multidisciplinary unit monitors all reviews of diabetic patients annually ensuring disease control. In Spain, about 26,000 children under the age of 15

suffer from type 1 diabetes, 13% of all diabetics. More than 5,500,000 people are estimated to suffer with type 2, of whom 43% are undiagnosed, that is, they do not know they have the disease. Figures that are increasing and indicate that in 20 years could be increased by up to 55%. One in six adults are obese and one in four children are overweight, an excellent breeding ground for the illness. Diabetes can be cured and the data is clear: more than 70% of obese patients undergoing bariatric or metabolic surgery cease to become diabetic. "The effectiveness is immediate in patients with type 2 diabetes, who usually stop using insulin and medication in the weeks following the intervention," explains Dr. Juan Luján, head of service and head of the Unit for Obesity and General Surgery and Digestive System of Hospital Quirónsalud Murcia. Legion learn new skills More than a dozen members from the Orihuela Costa Branch of The Royal British Legion were guests of the Emerald Isle Bowls Club last week, enjoying a morning of instruction on the game, with varying degrees of success. by Andy Mansell Everyone agreed it had been a very enjoyable experience, despite the occasional long trek when they were occasionally required to chase after their bowls that had been despatched with the wrong bias. The session had been arranged by Mel O’Dell who was joined by Emerald isle members Frank King, Ernie Bennett and Joe Dear in providing the tuition After the legion’s regular monthly gathering, members were very well entertained by the Terri Horvath Morris Dancers who are based in Campoverde, but dance at many local charitable events and Fiestas. Sue Walters gave a short presentation on the history of the 15th century English Folk Dance before the team performed three regional dances from their repertoire. Of course the display didn’t end there as Sue then coerced a dozen or so branch members to take to the floor with varying levels of accomplishment. Whilst the chairman and branch secretary took on this new skill with great success there were other members who were having obvious difficulties in learning the footwork. Despite his advancing years, Mo Davin, however, was so taken with the activity that he is now considering joining the troupe.

Last Saturday saw the final walk of the season by the Strollers group of Torrevieja U3A. Many members turned out for a sunshine blessed walk around Torre de la Horadada before coming together for a delicious lunch in a Chinese restaurant near Playa Flamenca. All members are now looking forward to cooler climes before the next season starts. The new U3A Social Theatre Group enjoyed their first outing to Beniojar where they enjoyed a pre-show meal in Catorce restaurant before heading to the theatre to watch an amateur production of Noel Coward’s ‘Blythe Spirit’.

The walking dead invade Los Alcazares by Andy Mansell The streets of Los Alcazares will be a place to avoid this weekend unless you enjoy being pursued by gangs of zombies after your blood. The extremely popular ‘Zombie Night’ has already taken place in 25 locations throughout the country over the last year, with over 15,000 happy participants enjoying the fun and blood curdling laughter so far and now it is arriving in los Alcazares. The event starts at 11.00pm on this coming Saturday May 27 at the Town hall in Avenida de la Libertad, when the game players must decide whether they wish to be a ‘zombie’ for the night or a ‘survivor’. Participants who wish to be ‘survivors’ need to register between 8.30pm and 10.00pm, whilst the ‘zombies’ registration time is from 9.30pm to 10.00pm. Make up and body paint to ensure the zombies look as undead as possible, will be supplied by the organisers and included in the ticket price. Throughout the night, participants, divided between zombies and survivors, will tour the main streets of the municipality and must survive, through various tests, until evacuated. The goal of the game is for survivors to remain uncaptured by the zombies and to pass tests which will help them find the vaccines that will enable them to survive. The first to finish all the tests and to arrive at the destination at 5.30am on Sunday morning, will be the final survivor to be evacuated and consequently crowned the overall winner. Event organisers, Eventos Zombies LZD, have seen the

‘Zombie Night’ phenomenon spread quickly through Spain with huge success and see it as a fantastic opportunity for towns holding the events to bring new visitors. They envisage the event in los Alcazares will bring a huge number of participants to the town from across the whole region, boosting the local economy and encouraging people to pursue an alternative entertainment where drugs and alcohol are banned. The event aims to be recognized as the best 'Real Game' in Spain and is a game suitable for all ages (between 10 and 99 years). Decades ago I was commissioned to write an article about a disability awareness course conducted for London bus and tube staff. The speaker who made the biggest impression on those selected for the course was a disabled man who implored staff not to assume that everyone with a disability needs help. He had stopped his wheelchair in the underground to check a map. An overzealous worker, assuming he’d run out of stamina, came up from behind, grabbed the handles of the wheelchair and began pushing it forward. He abruptly stopped when the man screamed out in agony. The fingers of both his hands had become trapped in the wheel spokes, and all were fractured. Fast forward to May 15, 2017. I am using easyJet’s new-fangled DIY baggage drop at Gatwick Airport ahead of a return flight to Alicante when a staff member, wrongly assuming that I need assistance, wrenches the bag out of my hand and dumps it on the conveyor belt. In doing so, she knocks my passport out of my hand and it disappears into the conveyor belt system. When I loudly complain, she has the audacity to suggest that nothing of the sort had happened; that I had accidentally put my passport in the suitcase. A second staff member comes along to assure me that an alert has gone out, and the passport will be found. Two hours crawl by, and I am told that, because it hadn’t been found, I will be unable to fly and that my luggage will later be returned to me.

Four hours later – minutes after my flight had landed in Alicante – I am escorted to an area to retrieve the case. And here’s the kicker: they will not release it without seeing my passport! Fortunately, I have a laminated copy of it in my wallet, so reluctantly they hand it over after putting me though a rigorous security check. (Earlier, easyJet flatly refused to accept that copy as a valid travel document.) The upshot is that I am compelled to return to the home of a friend in Brighton who had put me up during my four-day business trip to the UK. Then I have to spend four hours (and £106) at HM’s Passport Office to get a replacement. Can I get one the same day? HM's computer says ‘No!”. Can I come to collect it the moment it's ready? Computer says “No! It has to be posted.” So here I disconsolately sit, gazing out of my friend Sam Pink’s window watching a bad-tempered gull

shredding a pizza box lying on a rain-soaked Brighton street, and thinking back on the lesson I was taught 30 years ago at that London Transport course: if people need help THEY WILL ASK FOR IT!. All I need now is assistance to hit easyJet with a massive compensation claim. Obviously, I won’t be getting that help from the airline itself. Only via a premium-rate telephone service can you speak to an actual human being, and the one I spoke to brushed me off with the words “put your complaint in a letter and send it to us. ”Today discovered a link to a site that tells one precisely what to do if you have an issue with easyJet or Ryanair. With a foot in two camps I often reflect that expatriates living on the Costas actually know little about each other. I wonder how many Costa del Sol residents visit the Costa Blanca or know where the Costa Brava is. Many Costa Blanca residents know the Sol only from coach trips taken. “If it is 3 o’clock, dear, then we must be in Fuengirola.” The recently criticised poor transport infrastructure separating the two regions has much to blame for the estrangement. As travel by train or bus is problematic I opt for the tedious but undeniably scenic car journey. Oddly, it is quicker, easier and sometimes cheaper to fly Malaga or Alicante to the UK. As for lifestyle differences I am much torn. Few question the dynamism of the Costa del Sol. The Andalucía paradise enjoys lower unemployment, offers more opportunity; it is a place where more cash changes hands. It is allegedly more expensive but that’s a tourist problem as aficionados cut their cloth according to their needs. Torrevieja it is said is the poorest city in Spain. Take that with a pinch of the salt the city is famous for. According to EU statistics Liverpool was once the Union’s poorest city. Yet, like Torrevieja, the Maritime City was rolling in cash. What money did change hands simply didn’t go through the till. Government is not the brightest tool in the box when it comes to number crunching. Whilst the N-332 is notoriously dangerous the

same flyway-highway streaming from Torremolinos to Sotogrande is a hair-raising challenge. As a onetime city cab driver I am no wimp when behind the wheel but I don’t recommend the Sol for the timid. Business interaction between the two regions appears low key. In view of much trade now being conducted over the internet this seems an anachronism. Costa Blanca and Brava communities would certainly benefit from better interaction with the Costa del Sol business community’s business acumen and drive.

Some like it hot and statistically the Blanca is warmer than the Sol and life more laid back. I recall a real estate agency advertisement that carried an image of a relaxing couple dreamily gazing out across the sleepy Mediterranean. The caption was, ‘Life in the Fast Lane.’ Now that is the Costa Blanca. In my view (sic) the landscapes and seascapes to be enjoyed on the Blanca, especially between Torrevieja and Calpe, knock spots off anything on the Sol. Now let’s talk about the Costa Brava: Where’s that?

A raw diet could be the real deal for dogs Research released has revealed two thirds of dogs* suffer from some sort of health issue such as allergies, dental or stomach problems. Bad breath is the most common problem (26 per cent) and over 20 per cent admit their dog is overweight. Despite this, over 60 per cent of owners aren’t aware that poor nutrition is one of the leading causes of health issues such as these, which can be vastly improved by changing to a raw diet. Of the owners surveyed, the research has also revealed a lack of understanding of what really goes into our dogs’ food. Almost a quarter (23 per cent) of dog owners admit to paying little or no attention to what’s on the label of the current dog food they purchase and over 10 per cent say they don’t really know what’s healthy or nutritious for their furry friend. Interestingly, men (32 per cent) are less likely to check the label on their dog food versus women (36 per cent) and similarly women (29 per cent) are more aware of what’s healthy for their dog compared to their male counterparts (27 per cent). Raw feeding aims to give dogs a diet appropriate to their digestive system and as close as possible to what they might have eaten as wild animals. It has been shown on countless occasions to make an extraordinary difference to a pet’s health and wellbeing. Craig Taylor, Managing Director of Natures Menu, Europe’s leading expert in raw pet food, said: ‘We all care so much about our furry friends and this should extend to what we’re feeding them too. Standard dog food often may seem like it’s the best for your pet, but on closer inspection many contain ingredients such as

sugars, meat meals and meat derivatives that just aren’t as healthy or nutritious.’ ‘Raw feeding not only has its benefits in terms of nourishment and easy digestion, but has also been shown to help alleviate a number of health issues, such as chronic skin and digestive problems. If your dog is suffering from any sort of health issue, we always recommend speaking to your vet for advice but switching to raw could really make a world of difference.’ There are a number of factors that point towards a health problem in dogs. Here are the ones to look out for which could indicate an underlying issue, all of which are often easily alleviated by a change in diet: 1. Bad breath 2. Poor digestion 3. I miss the old days when clothing and shoe sizes were exactly what they said on the label, and didn’t depend on who made them or whether they were drunk or sober when they did it. I have weird shaped feet, sort of aero dynamic and pointed – dangerous really. However my shoe size has always been nine and a half in UK terms and supposedly 44 here. But I have always found that 43 is the perfect fit for me with Spanish shoes, the equivalent of size 9. Fine on the face of it, but having purchased a pair of comfortable 43’s recently, I went back to the store during their sales and tried another pair that had caught my fancy. Good job I did. The 43’s were too large but when I tried a pair of 42’s aka size 8, a size I left behind in school days, they were far too small. And yet both pairs were made by the same Elche manufacturer. It’s the same with patterned tee shirts. I have found through trial and error that in one international Spanish chain, those made in Bangladesh or Portugal are less generous in their sizing than those made in Morocco. A Moroccan XL fits perfectly whilst the others look as if my body has been decorated by a mad tattooist. Length of leg is another issue I have, because unless my lower appendages have shrunk in the wash, the strides that I need today are a full inch shorter than the ones I previously required. But now I’m thinking, hold on. It’s inside leg measurement in the UK, and perhaps they measure it from some other location on the leg in the rest of the world. Which brings back some unsavoury memories from my younger lad-about-town days when I used a bespoke tailor for my three piece suits. I didn’t stop buying made-to-measure because I could no longer afford it, but because of the measuring process and numerous fittings. The assistant always took far too long taking my inside leg measurement for my liking, and seemed to dally around the crown jewels longer than was necessary. My patience snapped one day when he asked me for the hundredth time, which side I dressed on, and I snapped: “You’re the expert mate, you tell me” and walked out.From then on it was offthe-peg at Hepworths.

Apocope

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by

We have been talking about the position of adjectives and the fact that sometimes they go in front of the noun instead of after it. That is, sometimes we say: el hombre grande (the big man) and sometimes we say (el gran hombre) which means the great man (you may choose your own example here - Winston Churchill, the Dalai Lama, John Lennon etc.) We have looked at why these changes in position are made and how they sometimes affect the meaning. What you will have also noticed is that sometimes when the adjective goes in front of the noun it truncates, in other words, it loses a little bit from the end. There is a great word for this – “apócope”. You can add it to your list of useless information if you like. Apocope in English means the “omission of the final sound or sounds of a word”. I find that Murcians are very prone to apocopation, as are a lot of pop singers – Americans mainly. Sorry, getting back to the point. When should we apocopate adjectives in Spanish? Here are the rules: The words “bueno” and “malo” apocopate when they appear in front of masculine singular nouns: “Un buen día” (one good, or fine, day), “el mal error” (the bad mistake). They do not apocopate in the feminine form though – “una buena idea” (a good idea); “la mala gestión” (the bad management); nor in the plural (buenos días, malos errores etc). The word “grande” apocopates in both the masculine and feminine singular in the same position. “Un gran festival” (a great festival); “una gran fiesta” (a great party). The plural goes back to “grandes” in both cases as the word “grande” does not have a separate feminine form. There is a range of other words which always apocopate before a noun in the masculine singular. Here they are: primero, tercero, alguno, ninguno, uno. “El primer hombre” (the first man). “La primera mujer” (the first woman). “El tercer capítulo” (the third chapter). “La tercera calle” (the third street). “¿Tienes algún problema?” (Have you got any (some kind of) problem?)Remember that the word “problema” is masculine. The word “algún” here intensifies the meaning, which why I’ve put “some kind of” in brackets. We could just say “¿Tienes un problema?” (which also gives us an example with “un”). “No tienen ningún derecho

from the end of a word, In phonology, apocope is the loss (elision) of one or more sounds vowel. ed and especially the loss of an unstress

a hacerme esto”. (They have no right (at all) to do this to me). Again the “ningún” intensifies the meaning. We could just say “No tienen derecho a hacerme esto”. There is no apocopation with any of the plurals of these words – primeros, terceras etc. Finally, notice what happens when we have “uno” at the end of bigger numbers. For example: “¿Cúantos años tienes?” “Veintiuno” OR “Tengo VEINTIÚN años”. Since I am clearly lying, you can go up the scale guessing – “treinta y un años” “cuarenta y un años” and so on. I’ll leave that exercise to you.

I do not think I can handle another two weeks of watching the television having debate after debate, regarding the election. I am concerned that Theresa May is sounding sometimes, extremely naïve, Jeremy Corbyn and his team live in a fantasy world (as money does not grow on trees!), whilst the Lib Dems are trying to offer a strong opposition, I do feel that they are all over the place and they do not appear to be succeeding. Then there is UKIP, which having got the UK out of Europe, now have no role to play. I will, of course, be staying up all night for the results, as it is still unclear what Theresa May’s majority will be, especially whilst many pensioners are upset, now that her manifesto has been published and she has fallen back in the polls. I think it is going to be quite an amazing night. Very different from anything we have seen before. At least the subject of Brexit has taken a back seat, even with the press. But sadly, it is still there. Returning to my world, the mad season is almost upon us, so watch out for pedestrians everywhere, who seem to think they own the road, walking out in front of you without checking that it is safe to do so. Last month I introduced a bespoke life insurance policy. The feedback so far is extremely positive, like I hoped it would be, so much so that many of my staff are themselves taking it out. As a reminder, a 50 year

old, with a cover of €30,000, can cost as little as €10 per month. This would be very helpful if a sudden death occurred and left a gap in the finances, making it difficult for those left behind to pay for the funeral, inheritance tax and outstanding costs. With the funeral costing nearly €5,000 and assets of €250,000 which would incur inheritance tax of approximately € 8,000, this policy can provide the money for your loved ones to cover these costs, and there are various payments schedules to choose from. All this will take an enormous amount of stress away from your family at a very sad and painful time. There are obviously a number of reasons in why you could be interested in taking out a Bespoke Life policy. Sometimes our budget will not allow us to find the deposit for a funeral plan. Therefore perhaps a stop gap solution would be to take out a life policy. Obviously this must be taken out before you are 70 and will only take you to the age of 80. If you are considering taking a funeral plan, you may be interested to know that there are monthly interest free payments. ASSSA Health Insurance is becoming a very well respected name in the health market and I am very fortunate in having an excellent ASSSA Administrator within my company, who I know is appreciated by many of the clients. One situation never leaves us, and that is handling pre-existing conditions. I have often discussed this issue and I will try again to

explain. Unlike state health, health companies are privately owned and are unable to cover pre-existing conditions. I fail to understand why people would expect them to do so. Therefore it is much better to join when you do not have any problems, enabling you to have a clear plan without exceptions, and of course remembering that with ASSSA, the age you join is the age you stay. Recently I have taken on a new Sales Manager. Imagine his dismay when his renewal date passed and no contact from his agent at all. When one of our Sales Consultants offered to do a re-quote for him, he was dismayed to discover he was only third party, but more worrying was the seats were not insured. If a tragedy had occurred, Graham would have been responsible for all the costs. What a huge learning curve he has gone through. Please, never in Spain, assume you have what you think you have. Sadly there are many who tell you what you want to hear. Please, please check your car policy. Those insured with my company need not worry as the seats are automatically insured, you have no choice. Changes afoot The UK Government has announced that they intend to shelve the “Triple Lock “on UK state pension from 2020 and return to the “double lock”. What will that mean for your UK state pension? It means that you will no longer be entitled to a minimum annual rise of 2.5%.

At the moment the Triple lock promises that state pension will rise each year by the highest of one of three measures: wage growth, inflation or 2.5%. Introduced by the Coalition government in 2010, the lock means the basic state pension is worth £106.8p a year more than it would have been if only a "double lock" - based solely on earnings and prices - had applied. This could have a huge impact on the standard of living for pensioners who rely on the annual increase, but it does help with one thing, it makes redundant the main question from most pensioners living in Europe regarding the Brexit which was “will the Brexit mean I

lose my automatic 2.5% annual increase on my pension” as you will now no longer have such a guarantee. The UK Government seems hell bent on penalising pensioners as they have also announced changes to how they will fund Old Age care, they want to use your home in the UK to pay for these costs. At the moment they are trying to backtrack on this, but the fact they announced it in the first place usually means they will eventually do it, or something very similar. What are they going to target next? Could it be your private pensions, they might decide pensioners who have worked all their lives to have a comfortable

retirement are too comfortable and decide to place an extra tax on this income. No one knows. But what this does mean, now more than ever you need to ensure that the money you have in investments, bank accounts and private or final salary pensions is working for you in a tax efficient way and where possible you have control over how these are managed and invested. All too often British people living in Spain assume that Spanish banks operate in a similar way to the UK. This may not be the case. Some estate agents suggest that in today’s current market, many people looking to sell a Spanish property will have had to reduce the price of their property to be able to conclude a sale. With all the associated costs and taxes that need to be paid out, maximising the amount of Sterling that you finally receive for your euros is vital. Clients need to be aware of two important factors that can affect you when converting your euros into Sterling and moving those funds out of Spain.

2. Exchange rate and repatriation The agreed sale price of a property is often based on the amount of Sterling that the seller hopes to receive, according to the exchange rate at that time. However, a Notary / completion date can take place some weeks, or even months, after the contract of sale has been signed. This means that sellers could run the risk of the exchange rate moving against them, and thus reducing the amount of Sterling that they receive. For example, with an exchange rate of 1.20, a sale value of 150,000€ will give you £125,000. Should this exchange rate rise to 1.23, a rise of just 3 cents, this would give a return of £121,951, which would mean achieving £3,049 less Sterling. Guardamar charity family fun day

If you’re looking for a fun day out for all the family next weekend, with an assortment of entertainment on offer for Mum, Dad and the kids, then look no further than the Jukebox Bar in Guardarmar. Proceeds from the event will go towards helping to pay for food, toiletries and other essentials for the orphans at the Elche Childrens Care Home. This is the first event organized by volunteer Aimee and she has pulled out all the stops to make

it a fun day that all the family will enjoy. Amongst the fantastic activities on offer during the afternoon are face painting and a bouncy castle for the kids, a fashion show and cocktail tasting for the ladies and even horse racing to keep the men of the family happy. There will also be live singers throughout the afternoon, stalls selling bags, shoes, angel cards and cakes, plus a game of ‘play your cards right’,

to conjure up memories of Saturday night TV from the past. And ladies, be sure to arrive early, as the fashion show begins at 14.30h, so don’t miss out on a fabulous day of fun and help to make the orphans lives a little brighter. Kop a seat for Mack and Mabel Now only a week away from opening night, tickets for STUDIO32 summer production, Mack and Mabel are selling well, so make sure you’ve got your tickets booked for what promises to be a spectacular show. Mack and Mabel is set in the silent movie era, spanning a period from 1911 to 1938, and tells the story of the tempestuous relationship between the eponymous couple. With some fabulous songs including ‘Movies Were Movies’ and the comic number ‘Hit ‘Em On The Head’, featuring possibly Mack’s most famous invention: the Keystone Kops, audiences are set for a wonderful night’s entertainment. Bill Nicholson plays the leading role of real-life character Mack Sennett, a famous movie director who meets leading lady Mabel Normand , played by Bev McEwan. Both Bill, who has now performed in over 150 shows and Bev are experienced actors, having played lead roles with Studio32 and other companies both in Spain and the UK. STUDIO32 are continuing to support the San Fulgencio Alzheimer’s Association and local charities with this show. Past shows have raised significant sums of money and the company hope to repeat that with sell-out performances once again. Show dates are Wednesday May 31 to Saturday June

News from Torrevieja U3A Last Saturday saw the final walk of the season by the Strollers group of Torrevieja U3A. Many members turned out for a sunshine blessed walk around Torre de la Horadada before coming together for a delicious lunch in a Chinese restaurant near Playa Flamenca. All members are now looking forward to cooler climes before the next season starts. The new U3A Social Theatre Group enjoyed their first outing to Beniojar where they enjoyed a pre-show meal in Catorce restaurant before heading to the theatre to watch an amateur production of Noel Coward’s ‘Blythe Spirit’.

Pass the Courgetti Betty Unless you've been living on another planet for the last year or so, you will be familiar with the 'Courgette Crisis' which hit the headlines earlier in January this year. The plight of the humble baby marrow became something of a 'cause celebre' amongst healthy eaters, because it suddenly disappeared off the shelves of supermarkets. The reasons were twofold. One factor for the lack of availability were the awful December rains that hit Southern Spain, decimating the courgette crop in it's main European growing region. The other was the huge popularity the vegetable has garnered in the wake of the 'clean eating' revolution that has been sweeping across the continent. Using a handy (and quite expensive) kitchen gadget called a spiralizer, the courgette becomes a healthy eating star in the form of courgetti. Courgetti, or courgette noodles, are thin strands of courgette that can take the place of noodles or spaghetti. They need very little cooking and are the carbohydratefree way to turn dishes into substantial meals (perfect if you’re on a clean diet kick). You can cut thin slices of courgette into strips by hand, but it’s worth investing in a gadget to speed up the process. The Spiralizer, also known as the 'Spiralschneider', is the classic model, and a monument to retro design. Spare in detail, 1970s avocado in colour, but highly efficient at what it’s supposed to do. Three different cutting blades turn out spirals of ‘spaghetti’ and long curls of shaving. Courgettes, carrots and potatoes all go through easily; the handle makes turning the veg effortless. Be warned, though: the sharp blades and spikes need careful handling and washing. Now, if you're not yet ready to invest in a side winding spiralschneider (try saying that when you've has a couple of sweet sherries!), or you're not fond of the colour avocado, I have some excellent news for you. A well-known chain of Spanish Supermarkets that begin with the letter 'M', ends with the letter 'A' and has a particularly irritating theme tune. Yes, you know the one. Well, this particularly supermarket now sells, ready spiralized courgetti in the chiller counter, ready for use. That's all very good, you may say, but what should you do with your courgetti? Here's some ideas on how to cook or not cook it: BOILING: People first started cooking courgetti by lowering it into boiling salted water, because it was treated like pasta. But this method can make it turn into a soggy mess. If courgetti doesn’t fill you up, try substituting half your pasta with courgette noodles instead. Cook your spaghetti as normal, then drop the courgette noodles into the pan right at the last minute. Cook for 30 seconds, then strain. This is a great way of lowering your carb intake.

BLANCHING: The healthiest way to cook courgetti, because no fat is involved. Simply put the courgette noodles into a sieve and pour over a kettle of boiling water. This takes the rawness out the noodles without breaking them down too much. Strain well before adding pesto, sauce or toppings. FRYING: The most common way of cooking courgetti. Flash fry in a splash of oil for a minute, and no longer. You’re not cooking the courgette, just softening it. If you cook them for too long, they’ll break up and no longer look like spaghetti. RAW AND UNCOOKED: Raw courgette is a versatile ingredient, great for salads with a warm lemony dressing and some crunchy salted pistachios. Or a raw pad thai with peanuts, spiralized carrot and mooli, plus lots of lime juice. Now here's a recipe that combines courgetti with the other food giant of clean eating, Avocado. It's simple, quick, ultra healthy and absolutely delicious. SMASHED AVOCADO COURGETTI: Smash 1/2 avocado in a pasta bowl with a fork until smoothish. Season, and add a squeeze lime. Add 1 finely chopped shallot, a handful finely chopped cherry

tomatoes, 1 finely chopped red chilli and season. Mix into the avocado. Fold in spiraized courgette to the mix, so the noodles get coated in the avocado (it makes it wonderfully creamy). Serve straight away.

Pot your way to fruit this year Always wanted to grow your own fruit trees, but donâ€™t have a garden? Well, you can still have your mini orchard on a terrace, patio or balcony if you use pots to plant your trees in.

On a deck, on a patio, or even on a sliver of balcony, a dwarf fruit tree needs sunlight and almost no growing room. You can move it, although once the container is full of soil and the tree gains bulk, you may not wish to move it often. You also will want to keep the potted tree within reach of the hose for easy maintenance. Otherwise, get set for easy pickings of apples, pears, figs, or other fruit, no matter how limited your space is. Choose a tree with a balanced shape, such as a tree with four to five solid, evenly spaced branches. You may not be able to see the roots, but they are important. There should be plenty of undamaged, fine white roots (known as hair roots). The more healthy hair roots on the tree, the better the chance of transplant success because these are the tree's lifeline to nutrients and water. HOW TO POT A FRUIT TREE 1. ADD SOIL Make sure drainage holes are clear in a pot at least 18 inches wide. Add commercial planting mix with a pH of about 6.5. Firm the soil and moisten slightly as you mound it up in the middle of the pot as a base for the roots. 2. PREP TREE Tip the tree and gently work it loose from the nursery potâ€”don't pull it by the branches. Tease the roots apart, or use a hose to rinse the soil out of the roots. Trim off overlong or damaged roots. 3. SET TREE Use a straightedge to center the tree on the mound. Let roots drape down around the mound. The graft union of the tree should be just above your planned final soil level. Adjust the mound level until it sets correctly. 4. BACKFILL When the tree is set, fill the pot with potting soil around the roots up to the graft union. Work quickly, so the roots are exposed as briefly as possible. 5. WATER Soak the soil and let it drain. This eliminates air pockets around the roots. Add potting soil if settling occurs. Repeat. 6. ADD SUPPORT Support the young tree. A 1x1 trellis anchored in the pot works well, or use bamboo or other stakes. Loosely tie the tree to the support. Rigid tying can harm the tree. MAINTENANCE Set the pot in a sunny site out of the wind. Wind can be hard on a young tree and will dry out containers quickly. When the soil dries out to about an inch deep, water the tree thoroughly. Limit pruning to severely damaged, broken, diseased, or crossing branches. Remove a tree from its container every two or three years, and prune the roots so they do not circle around inside the container. Replace the soil with new potting mix. Then replant the tree in it. The hardest task may be waiting. For the first two or three seasons, let the tree flower, but pinch off developing fruit. If the tree bears fruit too soon, it will not establish sufficient roots and wood strength. It may grow lopsided, new branches may not develop, and the tree eventually may break.

Lightweight versions of your favourite apps With an eye towards the developing world where people are more likely to own cheap phones and have unreliable wireless data access, the big names in tech are developing simpler versions of their apps. These apps are lightweight, use little data and don’t burn through battery life.

Switching to a ‘lite’ app means you’ll have to do without some of the visual polish and fancy features, but you may well consider the trade-off worth it for the improved battery life alone. These apps are also useful for travelling abroad, when you might want to keep data usage down to a minimum or can’t rely on a phone signal. Facebook Lite Facebook Lite is aimed at developing nations with developing telecom infrastructure, so you won’t be able to install it straight from the Google Play store. To get around this, open Settings in Android, tap Security, then toggle the Unknown sources switch On. Download the latest Facebook Lite package from APK Mirror, then transfer it over to your phone (via email, Dropbox, or your method of choice). Run the file, tap through the security warnings and you’re up and running. You won’t notice all that much difference in what Facebook Lite can do, but the whole app is quicker and lighter. Unlike the main app, the Messenger part of Facebook Lite is built into the same interface. If you just want the Messenger experience on its own, that’s available too and can be loaded in the same way. iPhone users have no Lite option, though you can opt to use the Facebook mobile site.

Facebook moderators have just ten seconds to make a decision Leaked Facebook documents show how the social media company moderates issues such as hate speech, terrorism, pornography and selfharm on its platform, the UK’s Guardian newspaper reported, citing internal guidelines seen by the newspaper. New challenges such as ‘revenge porn’ have overwhelmed Facebook’s moderators who often have just ten seconds to make a decision, the Guardian said. Moderators review more than 6.5 million reports of potentially fake accounts a week, the newspaper added. Many of the company’s content moderators have concerns about the inconsistency and peculiar nature of some of the policies. Those on sexual content, for example, are said to be the most complex and confusing, the Guardian said. Facebook had no specific comment on the report but said safety was its overriding concern. ‘Keeping people on Facebook safe is the most important thing we do.

We work hard to make Facebook as safe as possible while enabling free speech. This requires a lot of thought into detailed and often tough questions and getting it right is something we take very seriously’, Facebook’s Head of Global Policy Management Monica Bickert said in a statement. Facebook confirmed that it was using software to intercept graphic content before it went on the website, but it was still in its initial stages. The leaked documents included internal training manuals, spreadsheets and flowcharts, the Guardian said. The newspaper gave the example of Facebook policy that allowed people to live-stream attempts to self-harm because it ‘doesn’t want to censor or punish people in distress.’ Facebook moderators were recently told to ‘escalate’ to senior managers any content related to the Netflix original drama series ‘13 Reasons Why,’ based on the suicide of a high school student, because it feared inspiration of copycat behaviour, the Guardian reported.

Get the message and slow down Redhill-based signage specialists Messagemaker has unveiled two new LED signs which will be used to improve road safety and reduce traffic speed. The introduction of the new signs follows statistics from the World Health Organisation (WHO) which showed that 24% of all UK traffic accidents were as a result of speeding. Messagemaker, part of the Stocksigns Group, has over twenty years of experience with standard and specialist LED displays. They have supplied bespoke signs to Barclays, Williams F1, London Heathrow, Gatwick Airport, Excel, Tesco, Selfridges and many more. The new Speed Awareness Message (SAM) and Speed Limit Reminder (SLR) systems, built in the UK, are mounted to road-side posts and alert motorists who are speeding excessively. The SAM systems work by telling a driver the speed they are doing and warning them to slow down. The SLR signs display the speed the motorist should be travelling. By alerting drivers to the speed they are travelling, they will help improve safety and reduce road traffic accidents. In a study by WHO, it was found that an adult hit by a vehicle travelling below 50 kilometres per hour had an 80% chance of surviving the collision. In comparison, if a vehicle hit an adult at 80 kilometres per hour, there was a 60% likelihood of death. The same study

also showed that a 1 kilometre per hour increase in speed would result in a 4 – 5 % higher risk of death. At the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Road Safety Conference, a study presented by Professor Alan Tapp for Bristol City Council, looked into the introduction of 20 mph zones and limits for roads in Great Britain. Over two years (2013 and 2015), YouGov interviewed a total of 6,110 people and found that 65% supported 20 mph limits in residential areas. LED road signs, such as SAM and SLR, provide costeffective alternatives to constructing new road layouts or introducing speed cameras. They can be adapted to different post sizes and run on batteries which can be teamed with a solar panel. The versatility and simplicity of the signs allow them to be moved easily, for example a local council may have reduced traffic speeds in one street and want to alert drivers on another route. The sign can be taken down quickly and placed in its new location without having to block traffic or change power supply. Messagemaker’sLED expert Nigel Parke said, “Our new signs are fully weatherproof and can be used to capture vehicle data. Both signs use high visibility displays so drivers can see the warning 100 metres ahead of their location. They can be used on different mounting points, such as lampposts and road signs, and the desired warning speed can be set up quickly. For a more permanent solution they can run off mains power.” Messagemaker, and its sister company Stocksigns, has worked closely with RoSPA to improve Health and Safety standards in the workplace, on the road and in the home.

Penalty point reporting scandal Nearly a quarter (23%) of motorists did not inform their insurer the last time they received penalty points on their licence, research conducted by RAC Insurance has found. As many as 2.8m drivers have points on their licences which means around 654,158 drivers may be putting themselves at risk of their insurance policy being declared invalid should their insurer discover the information they have on record is not true. The problem could, however, be far greater as 18% of those surveyed said they would not inform their insurer if they were to receive penalty points – this equates to nearly 7m of Britain’s 38.5m full driving licence holders. RAC Insurance director Mark Godfrey said: “It is the duty of every driver to inform their insurer of any circumstance that might affect the contract they have with them, both during the insurance term and at renewal. This includes making sure every piece of information they provide when completing an insurance application is correct. “Not declaring penalty points is a serious matter as it puts drivers at risk of holding invalid insurance as well as potentially incurring substantial penalties from the

police, or even a prosecution. The onus is always on the person taking out an insurance policy to make any incident known that could influence an underwriter in calculating a premium, even if they are not requested to provide such information. This could be a previous claim, a criminal or motoring conviction. “If someone who had not told their insurer about receiving penalty points were to be involved in an accident they may be given additional penalty points, an unlimited fine and/or be disqualified from driving. The police could even seize and potentially destroy the uninsured vehicle.” The RAC Insurance research also found that one in 10 (10%) of those surveyed claimed to know of someone who had incurred penalty points themselves and then got their partner to take them instead – an offence which was highlighted in the national media in 2013 when former Lib Dem MP Chris Huhne was jailed for perverting the course of justice as a result of getting his ex-wife Vicky Pryce to take his penalty points which would have caused him to be banned from driving. While more than half (52%) questioned by RAC Insurance claim not to have had any points on their licences for over 21 years, of those that did

nine in 10 (90%) said they had acquired theirs as a result of speeding. Although motorists can be given penalty points for a variety of offences, speeding tends to be the one which leads to the most points being added to UK driving licences. This is no doubt due to the use of speed cameras, particularly as Government statistics for 2015 show that since 2010 there has been a 27% drop in the number of full-time roads policing officers in England and Wales from 5,338 to 3,901 – or 1,437 fewer officers. Mark Godfrey added: “The findings of our research are worrying. Motorists either don’t realise or forget that they need to inform their insurer whenever they receive penalty points, or – worse still – are intentionally not telling them in order to keep their insurance premiums lower. “While not realising or forgetting may sound better, the consequences are just as severe as if you deliberately hid penalty points from an insurer. The best advice with insurance is always to be completely open and honest – that way your policy will be there to protect you when you need it.”

San Miguel Strollers Walking Football Club recently celebrated its first year as a walking football team, by holding an invitation competition at the San Miguel Football Stadium, where they play on Wednesday evenings. The invitation competition had 8 teams playing this all day event with teams participating from Hondon, Deja Vieja La Marina, Playa Flamenca and San Miguel. The competition was played with 2

leagues of 4 with a semifinal and a final. The 1st semifinal for 2nd and 3rd place was played between Frails Fliers and Pilar Horadada which ended in a penalty shoot-out with Pilar the eventual winners to come 3rd and winning the Plate. The 2nd semi final was played between San Miguel Strollers 1st team and Playa Flamenca Walking Wanderers with Playa Flamenca the outright winners taking the Invitation Cup. All teams played the game in good

San miguel Golf Society’s final game before a large contingent make their way to Granada for an away weekend, saw 32 members and 4 guests turn up at the off the beaten track Hacienda de Riquelme course. The course was in reasonable condition, with fairways leaving room for doubt as to whether the winter rules approach should have been continued. However, the greens were in an excellent condition, if a little on the slow side. Low scoring is always hard to come by for society members on this course, but there invariably seems to be one stand out score, this time coming from Ivor Turkington, who was a mere 5 points ahead of the rest of the field with an impressive 39. The day’s competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 5th Chris Hamblett (27), 4th Ron Stenhouse (28), 3rd Grattan Forber (29), 2nd Mike Jordan (30), and 1st Norman McBride with 31 points. Silver Category: 5th Norman Cahill (28 on CB), 4th Ken Flaherty (31), 3rd Theo Boelhouwer (32), 2nd Phil de Lacy (33) and 1st, Brian Mulligan with 34 points. The golfers enjoyed almost perfect weather on a course in excellent condition, where scoring on the whole was quite low but with some notable exceptions. Montesinos boss looking up for next season

CD Montesinos coach Carlos Perez and his assistant Angel Ivan, although celebrating the club’s promotion to the 1st Regional division of the Valencia football league have their feet firmly on the ground regarding their prospects in the new league. "Next season will be one of settling in to the 1st Regional league," said Perez, speaking at the Annual Player of the year awards. The Los Montesinos based club manager said: "I am looking at finishing mid table in the 2017-18 season. Any higher will be a bonus." Former CF Torrevieja player Carlos, who replaced sacked Camacho in October, led CD Montesinos to the Championship title of the 2nd Regional Group this season. "I will be looking to strengthen the squad with an additional four players during the summer," he confirmed. Perez, who also played at Valencia CF reserve team Mestalla, said: "The 1st Regional league will be much more difficult to play in next season, there are many big clubs we will face." Despite a number of rumours suggesting he may be poached by interested clubs following his success, the coach was happy to commit his future to the promoted club: "I will be at CD Montesinos next season. I am looking forward to the challenge." Explained Perez He began his career in management at Bigastro, Guardamar and Torrevieja when his playing career came to an end. "After the first season in the 1st Regional we can then look ahead and maybe push forward into another promotion thereafter. But it won't be easy" said the delighted Perez.

Mazarron FC left with a mountain to climb

Mazarron FC left themselves with a big hurdle to jump if they are to achieve promotion, after a 2-0 away defeat to Los Garres in the Play Off Semi Final first leg. A late start at 8.30pm, failing light and an artificial pitch the conditions were not ideal for Mazarron and the home team took control in the early stages with a shot just wide of the target. At the other end Dani wasted a free kick just outside the penalty area, shooting high and wide. Mazarron’s largest away following for many years were upset by many of the referee’s decisions, failing to penalise the home team for consistent elbowing and shirt pulling. Despite this Mazarron started to push forward and had the better of the closing stages of the first half. The second period began in rapidly fading light and less than adequate floodlights and Los Garres again began

to take charge of the procedings. Mazarron continued to hold on until the 69th minute when a free kick was punched away by goalkeeper Juan Pedro only to see Moraga strike the ball back firmly into the net for the opening goal. Tempers on the pitch were getting heated leading to a barrage of yellow cards being issued for Mazarron while so many Los Garres offences were being ignored,

including some very obvious hand balls. Mazarron tried to push forward in search of an equaliser but were denied by fair means or foul and Los Garres sewed the game up in the 82nd minute. Tributes flood in for ‘the kentucky kid’ Members of the motor racing community took to social media to post messages and tributes to Nicky Hayden, who died last Monday, five days after he was involved in a cycling accident in Italy. Hayden, the immensely popular former Moto GP champion, was hit by a car during a training exercise in Italy last week and suffered severe head and chest injuries. On Monday, the Maurizio Bufalini Hospital, where he had been placed into a medically induced coma, confirmed that he had died. “The medical team has verified the death of the patient Nicholas Patrick Hayden, who has been undergoing care since last Wednesday 17 May in the intensive care unit of the Bufalini Hospital in Cesena following a very serious polytrauma which occurred the same day,” the statement said. The driver of the vehicle that struck Hayden was given a breathalyser test and was not found to have been over the limit at the time of the accident. Italian police have opened an inquiry into the accident, with their conclusions expected in July.

Diving bans to be introduced next season Players who dive in English football will face bans from next season under new Football Association regulations. Under the new rules, passed by the governing body at its annual general meeting on Thursday, a panel will review footage each Monday looking for cases of simulation. Any player unanimously found guilty of diving would be given a suspension. The FA also announced it has passed reforms it proposed in March, following criticism over the way it is run.The FA defines the new offence for which players will be punished as “successful deception of a match official”. Only incidents that result in a player winning a penalty or lead to an opponent being sent off - through either a direct red card or two yellow cards - will be punished. The FA says it will act “where there is clear and overwhelming evidence to suggest a match official has been deceived by an act of simulation, and as a direct result, the offending player’s team has been awarded a penalty and/or an opposing player has been dismissed”. Its panel will consist of one former match official, one exmanager and one ex-player. The announcement follows what the FA said was “a period of consultation with stakeholders over the past few months”. The rule change also required approval from the Premier League, the EFL and the Professional Footballers’ Association. Speaking in December, Burnley manager Sean Dyche said he thought diving would be eradicated from football “in six months” if retrospective bans were introduced. Such bans have been utilised in Scottish football since 2011. The Scottish Football Association compliance officer - Tony McGlennan - reviews incidents in matches and determines whether or not notices of complaint should be raised.

If a player is deemed to have dived during a game and the match officials did not recognise that at the time, the player will be issued with a disciplinary notice. The player can then either acknowledge guilt and accept the punishment offered by the compliance officer, or appeal. If it is the latter, a hearing is convened with an independent three-man panel - including people from legal and football backgrounds - who consider the case made by the compliance officer and the player before making a ruling. Sports Minister Tracey Crouch had said the FA could lose £30m-£40m of public funding if it did not modernise. In March, the FA announced proposed reforms to: Establish three positions on the FA board reserved for female members by 2018; Reduce the size of the board to 10 members; Add 11 new members to the FA Council so it “better reflects the inclusive and diverse nature of English football”; Limit board membership to three periods of three years; Introduce term limits for FA Council membership. These were passed after a vote by shareholders at Thursday’s annual general meeting, having already been approved by the FA Council in April. “I’m absolutely delighted the FA has understood the importance of good governance and implemented these reforms,” Crouch said. The proposals were criticised for not going far enough when first announced in March. Lord Herman Ouseley, the chairman of anti-racism group Kick It Out, said he had “no confidence in the FA’s proposals” and described the reforms as a “sham”. He added certain minority groups would continue to be under-represented, and that “by prioritising women on boards, all other protected groups are being left behind”.
