by Andy Mansell A day spent on the glorious sandy beaches of Benidorm should not include being constantly pestered by a continuous stream of beach hawkers selling food, cold drinks, sunglasses, beach massage or any other activity that may damage the image of the city. The city council, earlier this week announced a new campaign aiming to clamp down on unauthorized activities that take place on the beaches of the city, which could potentially effect beachgoers enjoyment.

Lorenzo Martinez, councillor responsible for beaches, explained that the initiative is named ‘How to enjoy a good beach day’ and is aimed at tourists who visit Benidorm: “Our campaign is focused mainly on foreign tourists and the ultimate goal is to try to end activities that damage the image of the city”, he said. A campaign leaflet will be handed out to beach users advising on the proper use and enjoyment of the beaches, and will include health recommendations on the use of sunscreen, hydration during sun exposure and the use of appropriate clothing.

However, it will also include warning against receiving massages by untrained masseurs and the purchase of food, drink and other items from unlicensed beach sellers. The council are seeking co-operation from the tourist industry in the initiative to ensure the message reaches the maximum amount of people. To ensure the new rules are being observed the council have seconded five extra local police officers from neighbouring municipalities to supplement the regular patrols from Benidorm local police. CHUMS donate €410 to the Franciscan Shelter for Men On Tuesday May 16, CHUMS (Friends of Charity) visited the Franciscan Shelter for Men at Palma de Gandia. The shelter provides a home and nursing care for around 65 homeless men, many of whom suffer from mental or physical illness, some of whom are terminally ill. These men would otherwise be on the streets and unlikely to survive without this special care. Admission is solely on the basis of need and all nationalities and religions are accepted. The hospice is funded entirely by charitable donations, with no state aid or official grants. Three Franciscan Brothers, (Hermano Guillermo, Hermano Pepe and Hermano Martin) assisted by local volunteers, care for the residents around the clock. CHUMS enjoyed a tour of the spotless shelter and got to know some of the residents. In true admiration of the work of the Franciscan brothers and the volunteers, CHUMS were delighted to donate €410 to the shelter’s electricity bill. Son appeals for help to bring dad home

by Andy Mansell Retired lecturer John Telfer, from East Calder, West Lothian, was injured in a horror crash whist on a cycling holiday in Alicante over two weeks ago. The accident happened when he came off his bike after crashing into a friend who had been unseated by hitting a raised tree root.He broke his neck in two places in the crash and was transferred to hospital with very little chance of survival. He was in a coma for two weeks and now has pneumonia and whilst his family insist he is receiving excellent care, the language barrier and the distance from home are creating problems.His son Gregg said yes-

terday: “He wasn’t expected to survive to the end of that day – but he’s still fighting for his life. “My dad has now been fighting for his life for 18 days and is currently critical in ICU in a highly Spanish-speaking hospital.“He has no vocal cords due to tracheostomy and cannot move from the neck down to show us his needs or emotions. “The care is fantastic within La Ribera hospital and we owe his life to them but the language barrier is so tough and we need to try and get him home as soon as they release him to us.” John was on holiday with his wife and was due to return home the day after his horrific accident. “Unfortunately on the morning of May 4, I received a panicked call from my

mum just after the accident had happened.” said Gregg. He added: “My dad has friends all over the world and they’ve set up a fundraising page in the hope we can transfer him by air ambulance to Scotland. “It can cost between £20,000 and £30,000 and the type of insurance my parents have doesn’t cover them for this.” Family friend Jo Pugh, who has set up the donation page, said: “While delighted with the specialist care John has received, the family are keen to return him to Scotland to a specialist spinal unit to begin stabilisation and recovery, with all close family there to support. 15-year-old Denia boy charged with gender-based violence National Police in Denia arrested a 15-year-old boy last week after he showed friends sexually explicit photos and videos of his 13-year-old exgirlfriend. A representative of Participacion Ciudadana - who visits school across the Marina Alta supporting adolescents - became aware of the young girl being victimised by her ex-boyfriend and notified the authorities. Officers learnt that, when they were together, the defendant had forced the victim to take sexually explicit photographs of herself and send them to him. The Brigada de Policia Judicial later learnt that the defendant was found to have recorded sexually explicit videos, without the consent of the victim – and showed his friends. The defendant used the material to exercise control over the victim after their relationship ended, threatening to post it on social media. The mobile phone of the defendant as well as other computer equipment was seized and he was charged with gender-based violence, discovery and disclosure of secrets and corruption of minors.

Manchester attack probe widens with arrests in Libya by Tahnee Wright The father of the suicide bomber who killed at least 22 people, including some children at Manchester Arena on Monday evening, identified as Salman Abedi, told Reuters in the Libyan capital on Wednesday that he had last spoken to his son some five days ago by phone and ‘everything was normal’. Police made arrests in the UK and Libya as the investigation focused on tracking down a network of accomplices who authorities fear could strike again. Ramadan Abedi, who was detained by a Tripoli counter-terrorism force during the interview, said his son Salman had told his family that he was heading on a pilgrimage to Mecca. ‘I spoke to him about five days ago ... there was nothing wrong, everything was normal,’ Abedi said. Abedi also said he was sure Salman had not been a member of Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). ‘Salman doesn't belong to any organisation,’ he said. ‘The family is a bit confused because Salman doesn't have this ideology, he doesn't hold these beliefs. We con-

demn these terrorist acts on civilians, innocent people.’ Police in Tripoli also arrested a brother of Abedi. A spokesman for the local counter-terrorism force said younger brother Hashem Abedi was arrested on suspicion of links with ISIL and was suspected of planning to carry out an attack in the Libyan capital. A man arrested on Tuesday was reported by British and US media to be Abedi's other brother. Manchester police, meanwhile, made several new arrests. ‘As it stands, six men and one woman have been arrested in conjunction with the investigation and remain in custody for questioning,’ a police statement said. Earlier, interior minister Amber Rudd said the bomber had recently returned from Libya. Her French counterpart Gerard Collomb said he had links with ISIL and had probably visited Syria as well. Rudd also scolded US officials for leaking details about the investigation into the Manchester attack before British authorities were ready to go public. The bomb used in the attack appeared to contain carefully packed

shrapnel and have a powerful, high velocity charge, according to leaked photographs from the investigation published by the New York Times. The official threat level in Britain was raised late on Tuesday for the first time in a decade to its highest level, ‘critical’, meaning an attack could be imminent. British Prime Minister Theresa May chaired a meeting of the government's Cobra emergency response committee at her Downing Street office.

Rudd said up to 3,800 soldiers could be deployed on Britain's streets, taking on guard duties to free up police to focus on patrols and investigation. An initial deployment of 984 had been ordered, first in London and then elsewhere. Soldiers were seen at the Houses of Parliament, May's Downing Street residence and at the London police headquarters at New Scotland Yard. It was the deadliest attack in Britain since July 2005, when four British Muslim suicide bombers killed

52 people in coordinated attacks on London's transport network. The Manchester bombing also left 64 people wounded, of whom 20 were receiving critical care for highly traumatic injuries to major organs and to limbs. All campaigning for Britain’s national election coming up on June 8 has been suspended since the bombing. Coverage of the attack and its aftermath has pushed out political news from the British media.

Migrants enter Spain posing as third division footballers North and Sub-Saharan African migrants made their way illegally into Spain wearing the football strips of AD Ceuta, a third division x side, based in the Spanish enclave on the coast of Morocco, according to National Police who have broken up a human-trafficking racket which dressed illegal immigrants as football players to get them through the border into Spain. Other teams in their league include teams from Sevilla, Cadiz, Huelva and Cordoba, resulting in frequent trips to the Spanish mainland for the players of the Ceuta team. Officers saw a man wearing the official tracksuit for AD Ceuta on board a ship heading from the city to mainland Spain, but found he was not one of the team, nor its staff. And on checking his national ID card, they found he was

not who he claimed to be, nor was he a Spanish citizen. The man in question claimed a member of the club had sold him the ID card for €1,000. Police traced the only member of the team who was not wearing the official strip and arrested him along with another woman who was said to be in charge of keeping the illegal migrant under wraps at her home before he was helped on board the ferry. A third person who had been accompanying the migrant was also arrested. The three taken into custody, a woman aged 32 and two men aged 23 and 34, were all born in Ceuta and had Spanish passports, and the immigrant was Moroccan and aged 19.

Ismael M., 23, is a player with AD Ceuta and issued a statement before the press saying he 'accepted his responsibility' for the situation and wanted to clear the club's name. Revealing he had been suspended from the team, Ismael said his 'error' was 'not telling the club he had a problem' because he 'got scared'. He added that he 'would die for his team' and that he 'thanked' them for their support. Chairman of AD Ceuta Luhay Hamido says the issue would be resolved in-house and the club would not give any further comment, other than to say Ismael had been 'suspended, not fired'. It is thought the trio involved may have pulled the same stunt on more than one occasion.

New Benidorm health centre a step nearer Benidorm mayor Toni Perez confirmed to the Spanish press this week that a detailed plan for the proposed new health facility planned for the Rincon de Loix area of the city were lodged with the Valencia Regional Government at the end of April. by Andy Mansell He was speaking to contradict a statement from Villajoyosa councillor of Health, Carmen Stack, who had suggested that Benidorm City council had not yet allocated a piece of land for the project. Perez explained, they are now awaiting instructions regarding the type of facility the regional government wants in the city, so that plans can be drawn to make plans for the bulding to fit onto the earmarked plot. The offer on the Detailed Study was submitted in writing to Valencia on April 28 with the fourth technical report confirming that the given plot is suitable to house a health centre. On May 3 copies of all the health authority documentation was delivered, and sent onto all groups of the corporation in an information commission on May 8. Perez insisted that "we are working closely with the Ministry" and stressed that "As we did with the change of license the works of IES Pere Mª Orts i Bosch, now our technicians are prioritizing all technical documentation necessary for the health centre construction

to the regional government ". Whilst discussing the condition of the existing health centre in the Rincon de Loix area, which was badly damaged in the January storms, he told reporters that they were still awaiting a decision from regional government confirming whether they will receive funding towards the repair work. The city council have put aside 45,000 euros from the 2017 budget as a contribution to the work, but as responsibility for health in the city, falls within the regional governments remit, they are waiting for them to confirm a figure, before work can start on the repairs.

Students celebrate diversity

The two public schools of Javea celebrated International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia on Wednesday last week – a ‘worldwide celebration of sexual and gender diversities’. Students prepared an awareness campaign, complete with a video that will be shared on social media and a set of posters with slogans such as ‘love is too beautiful to hide in a closet’, ‘heterosexuality is not more normal, it is more common’ and ‘love has to be free’. At break-time, students read a manifesto exhibiting the importance of emotional freedom and an active position against discrimination by sexual orientation.

11-year-old Calpe girl wins Valencia literature award

by Tahnee Wright This weekend, 11-year-old Lois Quadflieg from Calpe won the prestigious ‘Concurs de literature en valencia’ award in the Premi Sambori competition which she entered through her school CEIP Oltá in Calpe. A total of 961 schools from all across the Valencian Community took part in the competition, entering 137,326 students. Lois took first place in her age group, wow-

ing the judge with her short story ‘Roxy in Problemland’. Lois collected her prizes from the University of Valencia last Saturday. Lois is Dutch but has lived in Calpe her entire life after being born there. The youngest member of the musically gifted Quadfleig family, it comes as no surprise that her hobbies and singing, dancing and acting. Congratulations, Lois!

Cyclists remembered Three-year-old by students who fell into pool

loses fight for life

by Tahnee Wright CEIP Port de Xabia students paid tribute to the six cyclists involved in the N-332 incident recently as they cycled together following a road safety workshop hosted by the Policia Local of Javea. The group cycle always take place after the annual workshop but this year the students cycled with black ribbons and displayed a banner demanding more respect on the roads as a basic condition to increase safety. The students read a manifesto, demonstrating their awareness of road safety and closed with their commitment to respect its importance both now and in the future.

Denia restaurant fire A fire broke out in the Bona Platja restaurant in Denia on Monday morning. Three firefighters rushed to the scene and managed to control the fire before it got out of hand. The fire broke out, it is believed, due to a short circuit in the till and thanks to the efforts of the firefighters, the flames only slightly affected the kitchen and the hallway. The restaurant did not have to close, sending out a ‘message of tranquillity’ to followers on its Facebook page. The restaurant has however asked that anyone who has a reservation contacts them to confirm it, as the reservation book was damaged in the fire.

The three-year-old British boy who spent almost week in intensive care after falling into a swimming pool in Denia last Wednesday lost his fight for life on Tuesday. The incident happened at the family home in Cami be Betlem on the slope of the Montgo. The boy’s parents soon noticed that he had fallen and called 112 immediately. The boy was unconscious with no pulse and had swallowed a lot of water. Policia Local officers arrived at the scene and recovered the boy’s pulse with a defibrillator just a few minutes before the ambulance arrived and the medical team resuscitated him. The medical team also treated the mother, who suffered an anxiety attack. The ambulance took the boy to Hospital de Denia-MarinaSalud before transferring him to Hospital Clinico de Valencia where he was incubated in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Whilst the boy is said to have been breathing relatively normally since the incident, he died after failing to overcome brain damage suffered while he was underwater. His parents are understood to have agreed to donate his organs. Our thoughts are with his family.

Third anniversary of disappearance of Javea schoolgirl

Last weekend marked the third anniversary of the disappearance of Khrystyna Savenchuk, the 15-year-old girl who was a student at the Instituto Numero 1 de Xabia. Students, teachers and Councillor for Education, Montse Willaverde gathered at an event to remember Khrystyna, expressing hope of seeing her again – ‘we would like to see you again in the corridors of the institute, we do not forget you.’ said one of her companions. The students clapped loudly for an entire minute in the hope that ‘Khrystyna will hear us, wherever she is.’ Professor Tere Catala warned students of the dangers of social media – ‘Khrystyna may have known someone through a social network who deceived her,’ he added.

Cats and kittens left for dead Last Friday evening, Jalon Valley A.R.C received a telephone call from a distraught Spanish lady who, whilst taking her rubbish to the bins, was alerted by movement in a cardboard box. The box was secure and upon opening it she found a Siamese type female cat with six kittens. Next to the box was a child's suitcase and upon closer inspection, the lady found another female cat was inside. The cats and kittens are now safe in the care of A.R.C and after having been fed, watered and rested, are well and truly on the mend. The sad fact is – these are ‘pet’ cats – the kittens are used to human touch and the female cats are in excellent condition, albeit a little traumatised. A.R.C. is now overfull and are desperately looking for foster or forever homes. Four climbers found dead on Everest by Tahnee Wright Four climbers have been found dead in their tents on Mount Everest, officials said on Wednesday, with suspicion they died of carbon monoxide poisoning, taking the death toll on the world's highest mountain to 10 in the past month. The four climbers were found in two tents at Camp Four, at 8,000 metres (26,246 feet), overnight by Nepali sherpas. It was not clear how they died and their identities have not yet been established. The Himalayan Times reported that two of the dead were foreigners and rescuers believed they had suffocated. ‘It is most likely they died from carbon monoxide poisoning by using their stoves in the tent without proper ventilation,’ U.S. climber Alan Arnette, who blogs on Everest, said in a post. The sherpas who discovered the bodies were on their way to retrieve the body of Vladimir Strba of Slovakia who died near the 8,850 metre (29,035 feet) summit at the weekend. Strba's body has been brought down to Camp Two at 6,400 metres (21,000 feet) and was expected to be brought down to base camp later on Wednesday. More than 5,000 climbers have scaled Mount Everest since it was first climbed by New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay in 1953 and nearly 300 have died trying. Many of the victims remain on the mountain, entombed in snow, as it is too difficult to

bring their bodies down. Exhaustion, exposure, frostbite, falls and altitude sickness are major causes of death on Everest but the biggest killer in recent years has been avalanches. Eighteen people were killed in 2015 when a 7.8 magnitude earthquake triggered avalanches that smashed into the base camp. A year earlier, 16 sherpas hauling gear to higher camps for climbers were killed when they were hit by an avalanche while they were crossing the treacherous Khumbu Icefall, just above base camp. Climbers can ascend Everest from the Nepal side and the Chinese side. One of the 10 deaths this month has been on the Chinese side. Nepal has issued permits to 371 foreign climbers this season, up from last year's 281, each of which cost $11,000 (€9,830). In addition, hundreds of sherpas are climbing the mountain, or helping others to. Permit fees are a major source of income for cash-strapped Nepal which earned more than $4 million (€3.57 million) this year from Everest permits, officials said. The climbing season closes at the end of May when the rainy season traditionally begins, bringing cloud and snow at high altitudes.

Road safety for students Yolanda Pastor, Director of the Parc d'Educacio Viaria d'Oliva visited Enrique Moll, Mayor of Pego and Jose Mari, Councillor for Education of Pego last week to discuss road safety education for students in Pego. Throughout the year, a total of 126 primary school students have attended road safety workhops in the Parc d'Educacio and plans are already being made for 2018’s programme.

They are looking for businesses and other generous individuals to donate items for us to auction with all the proceeds going to Giving4giving. Their aim is to reach twenty lots and are looking for brand new items valued over the 20€ mark. President of Jalon Valley Help, Elaine Horton, was taken by surprise at the charity’s May Fayre recently as she was presented with a plaque from Jalon´s Alcalde, on behalf of the Ayuntamiento, in recognition of the charity´s 25th Anniversary Year. The Alcalde thanked Jalon Valley Help for all their efforts in supporting the community both in terms of Education and the support it offers to the elderly and those in need. This is indeed a tremendous honour and confirms that the efforts of the charity are very much appreciated by the local community. Elaine in accepting the plaque, praised the dedication of the Jalon Valley Help volunteers, who give up their time so willingly to help others who are sick or less fortunate. The plaque will be placed on the wall of Animo, the charity´s drop-in centre in Alcalali.

Benitatchell Bowling Club Treasure Hunt took place in and around Javea Port

by Andy Mansell Do you know who Fat Daniel’s brother was? No? Neither did most of the teams taking part in the Benitatchell Bowling Club Treasure Hunt in Javea Port last week. Forty people wandered the streets of the town with clipboards, search-

ing for clues, solving puzzles and generally having a great deal of fun. The thirty two questions, some easy, some obscure and quite taxing, were set by Jack and Marilyn Chamberlain, who organised the event. Winners with 28 points were Jackie and Vic Munt and David and

Judith Goodall, with several teams tied on 2nd place with 27 points so a very close contest indeed. The hunters did however manage to locate C’an Maria restaurant, where they adjourned for a superb lunch, where the toast of the day was to Jack and Marilyn for arranging such a good event.

Valley Voices take over Orba If you were unable to get tickets for the Jalon Valley Help ‘Abba’ evening in Restaurant Pepe, Alcalali recently, do not despair… The Citrus Bar in Orba will play host to the ever-popular Valley Voices on Friday June 23 from 4.30pm onwards. The choir will be singing a popular selection of songs including Hallelujah, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Moonriver and of course some favourite Abba tunes. Father Rodney joins Church of England Chaplaincy team

Members of all seven congregations of the Church of England on the Costa Blanca are delighted to welcome Father Rodney Middleton to the Chaplaincy team. He will have special responsibility for the congregations in Denia and Gandia and completes the existing team which comprises Lead Chaplain Father Marcus Ronchetti (Calpe), Father Jim Booker (La Fustera and Javea) and Father Ray Andrews (Alfaz del Pi and El Campello). Born in Liverpool on February 14, 1954, Father Rodney attended St Andrews University before training at St Stephen’s House, Oxford. After being ordained Priest 1983, he served as Curate in St Mary’s, Walton, in the Diocese of Liverpool. He was also a member of the Chaplaincy Team at Walton Hospital, which started his continuing experience and interest in the Healing Ministry. 1987 he was asked by the Bishop to go to a new housing area in Southport to set up a new Church plant which eventually became the Parish of St Francis of Assisi, Kew. Working at first from the local school hall and then a portacabin, they finally built the permanent church which today stands in the heart of the community. During this time, Father Rodney was also Hospital and Hospice Chaplain, further developing his experience of the Healing Ministry. From 1995, he was Vicar of St James the Great, Haydock. There he inherited the largest branch of the Guild of St Raphael in the world! He was invited to join the Council of the Guild of St Raphael, eventually becoming Sub Warden, and then being part of the group which guided the re-uniting of the Guild of St Raphael with the Guild of Health in 2015. He continues as a Trustee of the Guild of Health and St Raphael. Despite his busy life, Father Rodney has also found time to act as an Honorary Canon of the Diocese of Wiawso, in the Anglican Church in Ghana and to be Chair of Governors of the ‘Oustanding’ Parish Church School, a post he has held for nearly 20 years! Father Rodney includes in his interests music, literature, liturgy, archaeology, cooking, tasty food, wine, chocolate and almost all things Spanish. Father Rodney will be formally licensed at 12.00pm on Monday June 12 at a ceremony in Denia Church, to be conducted by the emissary of Bishop Robert, Archdeacon Geoff Johnston. Christians from all over the area are invited to attend. Oliva U3A visit the Albufera

Forty members of Oliva U3A enjoyed a day out to Albufera recently - a vast, freshwater lagoon and nature reserve near Valencia, where rice paddies stretch as far as the eye can see. After visiting a traditional clay and reed fisherman’s hut, the group delighted in a long boat trip around the lagoon, admiring both the scenery and the wildlife, followed by lunch. After lunch, the group moved on to Cuenca to visit a family run chocolate factory based in a beautiful townhouse, where chocolate is still being made to original recipes from the 19th century. The group toured the factory and listened to a talk on the history of chocolate making, enhanced, of course, with many samples along the way with an opportunity to purchase their favourite products at the end.

Members of the Javea U3A’s Travellers’ Tales group were treated to a very informative and highly amusing presentation recently as group member Felicity Arnott described her and husband Bob’s trip ‘In search of the Northern Lights’. The audience at the Javea Players Studio followed the couple’s travels aboard the Hurtigruten cruise line ship through the Norwegian Fjords as Felicity described wonderful snow scenes and their crossing of the Arctic Circle, complete with a bumpy ride on a sledge pulled by a team of huskies. Throughout the presentation, there was only one question on everyone’s lips: did Felicity and Bob indeed see the magic of the Northern Lights? The secret was kept right until the end when Felicity revealed two photographs which she had taken showing magical green and purple streaks in the sky. Hail the U3A Marina Baixa Last week fifty two members of the U3A Marina Baixa, set off for a few days holiday, leaving Albir at 8.30am on a gloriously sunny morning. The group stopped for a late breakfast in Chinchilla, before continuing our journey to Cañete, which was to be their base, for the next few days. Their stay for the trip was a lovely Hotel, on the outskirts of the village and after lunch, guide Maria took the group on an interesting guided tour of Cañete, which has a castle and several “gates” which date back to the 7th century. After the walk, several of the group enjoyed a drink in the Plaza Mayor, before returning to the hotel, where after getting changed for dinner, they enjoyed yet more food, before Maria acted as a DJ and they danced the night away. After breakfast , day two began with a trip to The Enchanted City (Ciudad Encantada), with Maria as guide once again, however just before arrival, heavy rain had them retreating to a café for warm drinks. The more hardier members of the contingent decided to continue with the walk around the amazing 250 hectares site, made up of rocks which have eroded over the centuries, to create amazing formations, which resemble bears, boats, elephants, dogs, crocodiles and bridges. On their return from the walk, the Hotel had provided serrano ham, cheese, bread wine & water. The group continued on to the source of the Jucar River, where they had planned a circular walk before lunch, but on the way, encountered what looked to be a snow storm, but was in fact large hailstones, which settled on the ground, looking like snow! About half of the group had been sensible and worn trousers, or jeans, but the remainder had shorts on and “goose bumps” to match! The agenda was then switched around, lunch came before the walk, but this was no ordinary lunch.

Several of the staff from the Hotel had turned up and they, along with some of the members, plus Jorge the driver, prepared a magnificent BBQ. Following lunch, the weather was still bad, so Maria put the music on again and the revellers enjoyed a ‘Pensioners Disco Rave’ The weather had improved slightly, so the members who were still standing, then completed the walk, while the rest stayed in the comfort of the bar! On the third day, after breakfast the group checked out of the Hotel and headed to Cuenca, the capital of the region, where they had several hours to explore the many wonderful sights that this City has to offer. On the way home, the group called once again at Chinchilla for a late lunch, before getting back to Albir at 7.30pm. Everyone agreed it was a magnificent trip and extended their thanks and gratitude to Rob & Liz, for once again providing some very special memories.

On Sunday May 14, Captain John Rhodes and Golf de Ifach hosted a charity match in aid of A.P.A.S.A. dog shelter in Javea, raising €1,765. Forty golfers took part with a shotgun start, followed by a delicious tapas lunch, raffle and auction. Music was provided by the O.K. Band and prizes, supplied by Select Villas, Moraira were awarded to the following – 1st - R.Linder, N.Bain, G.Wareham and G.Matherson 2nd - K.Brothers, H.Harding, T.Rowe and J.Rhodes 3rd - G.Larkin, H.Hellstrom, J.Johansson and K.Schlup A.P.A.S.A. extends its greatest thanks to sponsor Kosta, Maxim and Sataris restaurants, Inn on the Green, Trosset garden centre, Simply Beautitful. With a foot in two camps I often reflect that expatriates living on the Costas actually know little about each other. I wonder how many Costa del Sol residents visit the Costa Blanca or know where the Costa Brava is. Many Costa Blanca residents know the Sol only from coach trips taken. “If it is 3 o’clock, dear, then we must be in Fuengirola.” The recently criticised poor transport infrastructure separating the two regions has much to blame for the estrangement. As travel by train or bus is problematic I opt for the tedious but undeniably scenic car journey. Oddly, it is quicker, easier and sometimes cheaper to fly Malaga or Alicante to the UK. As for lifestyle differences I am much torn. Few question the dynamism of the Costa del Sol. The Andalucía paradise enjoys lower unemployment, offers more opportunity; it is a place where more cash changes hands. It is allegedly more expensive but that’s a tourist problem as aficionados cut their cloth according to their needs. Torrevieja it is said is the poorest city in Spain. Take that with a pinch of the salt the city is famous for. According to EU statistics Liverpool was once the Union’s poorest city. Yet, like Torrevieja, the Maritime City was rolling in cash. What money did change hands simply didn’t go through the till. Government is not the brightest tool in the box when it comes to number crunching. Whilst the N-332 is notoriously dangerous the

same flyway-highway streaming from Torremolinos to Sotogrande is a hair-raising challenge. As a onetime city cab driver I am no wimp when behind the wheel but I don’t recommend the Sol for the timid. Business interaction between the two regions appears low key. In view of much trade now being conducted over the internet this seems an anachronism. Costa Blanca and Brava communities would certainly benefit from better interaction with the Costa del Sol business community’s business acumen and drive.

Some like it hot and statistically the Blanca is warmer than the Sol and life more laid back. I recall a real estate agency advertisement that carried an image of a relaxing couple dreamily gazing out across the sleepy Mediterranean. The caption was, ‘Life in the Fast Lane.’ Now that is the Costa Blanca. In my view (sic) the landscapes and seascapes to be enjoyed on the Blanca, especially between Torrevieja and Calpe, knock spots off anything on the Sol. Now let’s talk about the Costa Brava: Where’s that?

I miss the old days when clothing and shoe sizes were exactly what they said on the label, and didn’t depend on who made them or whether they were drunk or sober when they did it. I have weird shaped feet, sort of aero dynamic and pointed – dangerous really. However my shoe size has always been nine and a half in UK terms and supposedly 44 here. But I have always found that 43 is the perfect fit for me with Spanish shoes, the equivalent of size 9. Fine on the face of it, but having purchased a pair of comfortable 43’s recently, I went back to the store during their sales and tried another pair that had caught my fancy. Good job I did. The 43’s were too large but when I tried a pair of 42’s aka size 8, a size I left behind in school days, they were far too small. And yet both pairs were made by the same Elche manufacturer. It’s the same with patterned tee shirts. I have found through trial and error that in one international Spanish chain, those made in Bangladesh or Portugal are less generous in their sizing than those made in Morocco. A Moroccan XL fits perfectly whilst the others look as if my body has been decorated by a mad tattooist. Length of leg is another issue I have, because unless my lower appendages have shrunk in the wash, the strides that I need today are a full inch shorter than the ones I previously required. But now I’m thinking, hold on. It’s inside

leg measurement in the UK, and perhaps they measure it from some other location on the leg in the rest of the world. Which brings back some unsavoury memories from my younger lad-about-town days when I used a bespoke tailor for my three piece suits. I didn’t stop buying made-to-measure because I could no longer afford it, but because of the measuring process and numerous fittings. The assistant always took far too long taking my inside leg measurement for my liking, and seemed to dally around the crown jewels longer than was necessary. My patience snapped one day when he asked me for the hundredth time, which side I dressed on, and I snapped: “You’re the expert mate, you tell me” and walked out. From then on it was off-the-peg at Hepworths.

Apocope

We have been talking about the position of adjectives and the fact that sometimes they go in front of the noun instead of after it. That is, sometimes we say: el hombre grande (the big man) and sometimes we say (el gran hombre) which means the great man (you may choose your own example here - Winston Churchill, the Dalai Lama, John Lennon etc.) We have looked at why these changes in position are made and how they sometimes affect the meaning. What you will have also noticed is that sometimes when the adjective goes in front of the noun it truncates, in other words, it loses a little bit from the end. There is a great word for this – “apócope”. You can add it to your list of useless information if you like. Apocope in English means the “omission of the final sound or sounds of a word”. I find that Murcians are very prone to apocopation, as are a lot of pop singers – Americans mainly. Sorry, getting back to the point. When should we apocopate adjectives in Spanish? Here are the rules: The words “bueno” and “malo” apocopate when they appear in front of masculine singular nouns: “Un buen día” (one good, or fine, day), “el mal error” (the bad mistake). They do not apocopate in the feminine form though – “una buena idea” (a good idea); “la mala gestión” (the bad management); nor in the plural (buenos días, malos errores etc). The word “grande” apocopates in both the masculine and feminine singular in the same position. “Un gran festival” (a great festival); “una gran fiesta” (a great party). The plural goes back to “grandes” in both cases as the word “grande” does not have a separate feminine form.There is a range of other words which always apocopate before a noun in the masculine singular. Here they are: primero, tercero, alguno, ninguno, uno. “El primer hombre” (the first man). “La primera mujer” (the first woman).

“El tercer capítulo” (the third chapter). “La tercera calle” (the third street). “¿Tienes algún problema?” (Have you got any (some kind of) problem?)Remember that the word “problema” is masculine. The word “algún” here intensifies the meaning, which why I’ve put “some kind of” in brackets. We could just say “¿Tienes un problema?” (which also gives us an example with “un”). “No tienen ningún derecho a hacerme esto”. (They have no right (at all) to do this to me). Again the “ningún” intensifies the meaning. We could just say “No tienen derecho a hacerme esto”. There is no apocopation with any of the plurals of these words – primeros, terceras etc. Finally, notice what happens when we have “uno” at the end of bigger numbers. For example: “¿Cúantos años tienes?” “Veintiuno” OR “Tengo VEINTIÚN años”. Since I am clearly lying, you can go up the scale guessing – “treinta y un años” “cuarenta y un años” and so on. I’ll leave that exercise to you.

€4,700 May Fayre success for Jalon Valley Help The annual Jalon Valley May Fayre took place recently as over 60 stallholders arrived bright and early to set up their colourful displays offering a variety of food and drink, crafts, bags, bric-a-brac, books and cards. At 10.00am, Total FM cranked up the sound system and the crowds flocked in to the rastro car park in Jalon to sample everything that was on offer including entertainment from The Nomad, Casual Choir and the Careline Dance Academy. Many commented what a ‘wonderful day’ they’d had and Jalon Valley Help express their greatest thanks to their ever-faithful volunteers. The event raised an outstanding sum of €4,700. The afternoon ended with the drawing of the infamous Jalon Valley Help raffle to the delight of the prize winners before Elaine Horton, President, gave her personal thanks to everyone for their continued support in the charity´s 25th Anniversary Year.

Natalie Coning was recently announced as winner of the Benitachell Library ‘La mascota contacontes’ competition. Natalie was delighted to win €200 in recognition of her excellent story written about the ‘mascots’ of the library, cats Moy, Erin and Terry. Well done, Natalie!

Gatwick Airport ate my passport Decades ago I was commissioned to write an article about a disability awareness course conducted for London bus and tube staff. The speaker who made the biggest impression on those selected for the course was a disabled man who implored staff not to assume that everyone with a disby ability needs help. He had stopped his wheelchair in the underground to check a map. An overzealous worker, assuming he’d run out of stamina, came up from behind, grabbed the handles of the wheelchair and began pushing it forward. He abruptly stopped when the man screamed out in agony. The fingers of both his hands had become trapped in the wheel spokes, and all were fractured. Fast forward to May 15, 2017. I am using easyJet’s new-fangled DIY baggage drop at Gatwick Airport ahead of a return flight to Alicante when a staff member, wrongly assuming that I need assistance, wrenches the bag out of my hand and dumps it on the conveyor belt. In doing so, she knocks my passport out of my hand and it disappears into the conveyor belt system. When I loudly complain, she has the audacity to suggest that nothing of the sort had happened; that I had accidentally put my passport in the suitcase. A second staff member comes along to assure me that an alert haa gone out, and the passport will be found. Two hours crawl by, and I am told that, because it hadn’t been found, I will be unable to fly and that my luggage will later be returned to me.

Four hours later – minutes after my flight had landed in Alicante – I am escorted to an area to retrieve the case. And here’s the kicker: they will not release it without seeing my passport! Fortunately, I have a laminated copy of it in my wallet, so reluctantly they hand it over after putting me though a rigorous security check. (Earlier, easyJet flatly refused to accept that copy as a valid travel document.) The upshot is that I am compelled to return to the home of a friend in Brighton who had put me up during my four-day business trip to the UK. Then I have to spend four hours (and £106) at HM’s Passport Office to get a replacement. Can I get one the same day? HM's computer says ‘No!”. Can I come to collect it the moment it's ready? Computer says “No! It has to be posted.” So here I disconsolately sit, gazing out of my friend Sam Pink’s window watching a bad-tempered gull

shredding a pizza box lying on a rain-soaked Brighton street, and thinking back on the lesson I was taught 30 years ago at that London Transport course: if people need help THEY WILL ASK FOR IT!. All I need now is assistance to hit easyJet with a massive compensation claim. Obviously, I won’t be getting that help from the airline itself. Only via a premium-rate telephone service can you speak to an actual human being, and the one I spoke to brushed me off with the words “put your complaint in a letter and send it to us. ”Today discovered a link to a site that tells one precisely what to do if you have an issue with easyJet or Ryanair. Costa Blanca Yacht Association Mirador Challenge teams raise €1,300 The Costa Blanca Yacht Association Mirador Challenge teams have totted up their sponsorship money from the 2017 event which took place at the beginning of April and are delighted to announce they raised €1,300 for two local charities. MABS Cancer Support and Make A Smile have each received cheques for €650 and express their greatest thanks to the ‘CBYA Chicas’ and the ‘CBYA Machos’ for their tremendous efforts. The Mirador Challenge is a medium-distance endurance walk of approximately 29 kilometres which links a network of 15 designated viewpoints located along the wonderful coastline of Javea. It is aimed at teams of five walkers who begin in the early morning at the Granadella mirador and then pass along the coast in a northward direction to arrive at the last viewpoint of 'Els Molins', the iconic windmills which sit above the town of Javea and afford stunning views all the way back to the start-point. The idea behind the development of the Mirador Challenge was primarily to open up this official network of ‘miradors’ to many more people who would be otherwise unaware of their existence. The secondary aim was to create a timed endurance walk covering many different types of terrain that would complement Javea's excellent sporting and leisure calendar. There are two disciplines for taking part in the Mirador Challenge: The 'Sports' option for those who want to test themselves by covering the entire length of the challenge in the fastest time possible and the 'Leisure' option for those who want to take it easy and enjoy the stunning views as they pass along the route. The CBYA Chicas were the ninth to cross the finish line as part of the ‘Leisure’ category, followed by the CBYA Machos a little later in fourteenth. A big well done to both teams!

On January 1st, 2017, the UK and Spain, along with all other EU countries, and many others worldwide, agreed to a system of financial information sharing in an unprecedented global crack-down on tax evasion. 1000’s of Expats in Spain have already received letters from their UK banks, pension providers and investment institutions informing them about this.

What does this mean for expats living in Spain? There are two main areas of concern. The first is for those who live in Spain for more than 183 days a year but have not correctly registered as a Spanish resident – you should apply for the official documentation as soon as possible to ensure you are paying your taxes correctly.

The second relates to the Spanish ‘Modelo 720’ which is a legal requirement to declare overseas assets worth more than €50,000 or GBP equivalent, to the Spanish tax authorities each Spring. Failure to make this declaration currently results in a minimum fine of €10,000 per asset group and up to 150% of unpaid taxes. The Automatic Exchange of Information will ensure that the Spanish tax authorities receive this information whether you have made the declaration or not, but if they find out before you complete the Modelo 720, then the fines will apply. It is important to understand that financial arrangements set-up for UK residents, including ISAs, Premium Bonds, UK Investment Bonds and others, are not Spanish compliant. They are not designed for Spanish residents, can create complex accounting requirements and will not generally offer any tax benefits here in Spain. There are equivalent products available for Spanish residents created by wellknown institutions like The Prudential and Old Mutual Wealth, which are, subject to suitability, available to Spanish residents through Chorus Financial. I do not think I can handle another two weeks of watching the television having debate after debate, regarding the election. I am concerned that Theresa May is sounding sometimes, extremely naïve, Jeremy Corbyn and his team live in a fantasy world (as money does not grow on trees!), whilst the Lib Dems are trying to offer a strong opposition, I do feel that they are all over the place and they do not appear to be succeeding. Then there is UKIP, which having got the UK out of Europe, now have no role to play. I will, of course, be staying up all night for the results, as it is still unclear what Theresa May’s majority will be, especially whilst many pensioners are upset, now that her manifesto has been published and she has fallen back in the polls. I think it is going to be quite an amazing night. Very different from anything we have seen before. At least the subject of Brexit has taken a back seat, even with the press. But sadly, it is still there. Returning to my world, the mad season is almost upon us, so watch out for pedestrians everywhere, who seem to think they own the road, walking out in front of you without checking that it is safe to do so. Last month I introduced a bespoke life insurance policy. The feedback so far is extremely positive, like I hoped it would be, so much so that many of my staff are themselves taking it out. As a reminder, a 50 year

old, with a cover of €30,000, can cost as little as €10 per month. This would be very helpful if a sudden death occurred and left a gap in the finances, making it difficult for those left behind to pay for the funeral, inheritance tax and outstanding costs. With the funeral costing nearly €5,000 and assets of €250,000 which would incur inheritance tax of approximately € 8,000, this policy can provide the money for your loved ones to cover these costs, and there are various payments schedules to choose from. All this will take an enormous amount of stress away from your family at a very sad and painful time. There are obviously a number of reasons in why you could be interested in taking out a Bespoke Life policy. Sometimes our budget will not allow us to find the deposit for a funeral plan. Therefore perhaps a stop gap solution would be to take out a life policy. Obviously this must be taken out before you are 70 and will only take you to the age of 80. If you are considering taking a funeral plan, you may be interested to know that there are monthly interest free payments. ASSSA Health Insurance is becoming a very well respected name in the health market and I am very fortunate in having an excellent ASSSA Administrator within my company, who I know is appreciated by many of the clients. One situation never leaves us, and that is handling pre-existing conditions. I have often discussed this issue and I will try again to

explain. Unlike state health, health companies are privately owned and are unable to cover pre-existing conditions. I fail to understand why people would expect them to do so. Therefore it is much better to join when you do not have any problems, enabling you to have a clear plan without exceptions, and of course remembering that with ASSSA, the age you join is the age you stay. Recently I have taken on a new Sales Manager. Imagine his dismay when his renewal date passed and no contact from his agent at all. When one of our Sales Consultants offered to do a re-quote for him, he was dismayed to discover he was only third party, but more worrying was the seats were not insured. If a tragedy had occurred, Graham would have been responsible for all the costs. What a huge learning curve he has gone through. Please, never in Spain, assume you have what you think you have. Sadly there are many who tell you what you want to hear. Please, please check your car policy. Those insured with my company need not worry as the seats are automatically insured, you have no choice. Changes afoot The UK Government has announced that they intend to shelve the “Triple Lock “on UK state pension from 2020 and return to the “double lock”. What will that mean for your UK state pension? It means that you will no longer be entitled to a minimum annual rise of 2.5%.

At the moment the Triple lock promises that state pension will rise each year by the highest of one of three measures: wage growth, inflation or 2.5%. Introduced by the Coalition government in 2010, the lock means the basic state pension is worth £106.8p a year more than it would have been if only a "double lock" - based solely on earnings and prices - had applied. This could have a huge impact on the standard of living for pensioners who rely on the annual increase, but it does help with one thing, it makes redundant the main question from most pensioners living in Europe regarding the Brexit which was “will the Brexit mean I

lose my automatic 2.5% annual increase on my pension” as you will now no longer have such a guarantee. The UK Government seems hell bent on penalising pensioners as they have also announced changes to how they will fund Old Age care, they want to use your home in the UK to pay for these costs. At the moment they are trying to backtrack on this, but the fact they announced it in the first place usually means they will eventually do it, or something very similar. What are they going to target next? Could it be your private pensions, they might decide pensioners who have worked all their lives to have a comfortable

retirement are too comfortable and decide to place an extra tax on this income. No one knows. But what this does mean, now more than ever you need to ensure that the money you have in investments, bank accounts and private or final salary pensions is working for you in a tax efficient way and where possible you have control over how these are managed and invested. All too often British people living in Spain assume that Spanish banks operate in a similar way to the UK. This may not be the case. Some estate agents suggest that in today’s current market, many people looking to sell a Spanish property will have had to reduce the price of their property to be able to conclude a sale. With all the associated costs and taxes that need to be paid out, maximising the amount of Sterling that you finally receive for your euros is vital. Clients need to be aware of two important factors that can affect you when converting your euros into Sterling and moving those funds out of Spain.

2. Exchange rate and repatriation The agreed sale price of a property is often based on the amount of Sterling that the seller hopes to receive, according to the exchange rate at that time. However, a Notary / completion date can take place some weeks, or even months, after the contract of sale has been signed. This means that sellers could run the risk of the exchange rate moving against them, and thus reducing the amount of Sterling that they receive. For example, with an exchange rate of 1.20, a sale value of 150,000€ will give you £125,000. Should this exchange rate rise to 1.23, a rise of just 3 cents, this would give a return of £121,951, which would mean achieving £3,049 less Sterling. Cancer survivor raises €1,800 for Cancer Care Javea Cancer Care Javea recently received a very generous donation from John Styles and his wife.

John’s personal experience with cancer started over a year ago when he woke one morning in terrible pain. Upon visiting Denia Hospital, he was told he had a urine infection which he later learnt, after visiting his own doctor, was in fact prostate cancer. John was quickly put on a course of tablets and underwent chemotherapy. Having recovered well, John wanted to ‘give something back’ to a cancer charity and chose to raise funds for Cancer Care Javea. John was soon celebrating his 70th birthday and to mark the occasion, held a party complete with auction and raffle at Quo Vardis in Javea – raising an impressive €1,800. John expresses his greatest thanks to all the local business for their support and in turn, Cancer Care Javea are extremely grateful to John and his friends for such a generous donation, which will go towards the ECMOR Foundation at Denia Hospital and other cancer related projects local to Javea.

‘Sounds Familiar’ prepare for their next production After the success of their festive musical ‘A Christmas Carol’ in December, ‘Sounds Familiar’ have been hard at work preparing for their next musical production, ‘Music of the Night’. The show will air at the Auditorio Municipal in Ondara on Friday July 7, featuring hit songs from many Broadway and West End musicals. Philip Ashley, the group’s Director delights in producing shows appealing to anyone who enjoys theatre - from older classic musicals written by composers such as Rodgers & Hammerstein to the more modern style of Andrew Lloyd Webber. The wide variety of music has meant the ‘Sounds Familiar’ cast have had tremendous fun switching from the elegance and glamour of ‘Shall We Dance’ from ‘The King & I’ to the heavier rock style of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’. Charity 60s, 70s and 80s night in Benidoleig The El Cid at Benidoleig will play host to a 60s, 70s and 80s night on Tuesday June 6 in aid of S.C.A.N. ‘Time Warp’ will perform their new tribute show and the team at El Cid will be offering their ever-popular carvery with delicious desserts. Oliva artist hosts contemporary exhibition The multi-talented artist, composer and writer Peter ‘BB’ Davis is to exhibit ‘Works’, a collection of his latest paintings at La Sala D’Exposicions de La Casa de La Cultura D’Oliva in June. The exhibition will run from Saturday June 3 to Saturday June 17 everyday between 11.00am – 1.30pm and 6.00pm – 9.30pm. The grand opening event will take place on Friday June 2 from 7.00pm onwards. Peter’s art mixes abstract painting with cut and pasted images. Speaking before the exhibition, Peter said, ‘For me it’s all about a certain kind of energy which expresses itself through the work, which then forms, of its own accord.’ ‘In the paintings,’ Peter continues, ‘the images are often random, as for example in graffiti, which possesses a certain symmetry and are suggested by what they can add at any one time – fascinated as I am by graffiti and such as disposable magazine, advertising and newspaper ‘celeb’ and ‘filmic’ imagery, allied to the more visionary aspects of landscape. The images are de-constructed with thinners to take them back to the base before painting re-construction commences. Which can elicit many nuances.’ Peter’s passion for forging his own identity as a painter and visual artist in all its forms has since art school (MA Fine Art) remained throughout his career, Peter having exhibited in a variety of shows from the RA Summer Exhibition to individual exhibitions as well as selling private collections.

The Rommy Baker Big Band play L’Alfas Del Pi The Esplanada de Casa de Cultura in L’Alfas Del Pi will play host to a ‘Moonlight Serenade’ concert courtesy of The Rommy Baker Big Band on Monday June 5. Moraira-Teulada U3A Wine Tasting Group A total of 78 members took part in the latest session of the Moraira-Teulada U3A Wine Tasting Group at Bar Mediterraneo in Teulada recently. Luis and Rocio of the Bar Mediterraneo laid on a magnificent feast of sandwiches and tapas for members to enjoy as they welcomed, for the first time, Sr. Daniel Fullana Font, Sales Manager of Bodegas Xalo in Jalon with his wife Celia and their daughter Monica, bringing with them six delicious wines for the group to try: two whites, one rosado and three reds. In excellent english, Celia - who runs the ‘Celler el Vinyater’ in Jalon - talked members through the background of each wine as they tasted them and at the end of the evening, there was a long queue of members waiting to place their orders for cases of their favourites. Coffee morning raises €245

Many thanks must go to Brian and Sue Tait for hosting a very successful Charity Coffee Morning at their lovely home overlooking the Jalon Valley. The occasion was also an opportunity to pledge support for Brian who is taking on the Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge in the UK in June to raise funds for the charity. Sue was supported by friends helping with the coffee making and dishwashing and many bakers brought along some scrumptious cakes. New arrivals…

A.R.C. recently received 14 new kittens all under fiveweeks-old, arriving from three different sources. The litters must be kept separate until they are old enough to be blood tested for Feline Aids and Leukaemia, however, space is very limited, as are funds. So, although A.R.C. has made room for the kittens, they are appealing for donations towards the cost of testing and inoculations (it costs €26 per kitten for the test alone, so €364 for these litters). When people ask A.R.C. to take kittens, the charity is rarely offered help with the cost, so all help is greatly appreciated. The Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir (CBMVC) are holding a concert at the Cueva de las Calaveras in Benidoleig on Friday June 30. The audience will be seated from 8.00pm in the open air on what is hoped will be a lovely, warm evening, whilst the choir will sing in the wonderfully acoustic entrance to this historic cave. The programme will include many songs popular with their growing number of followers together with new songs. What is the thyroid gland? The Thyroid gland is an endocrine gland in the front of your neck, just below your Adam’s apple. It is made up of two lobes, each about the size of a plum cut in half. The two lobes lie on either side of the wind-pipe. It makes two hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) which are excreted into the blood. These hormones are required for all the cells in the body to work normally. In the cells and tissues of the body T4 is converted into T3. It is the T3 that is derived from T4 or excreted as T3 from the thyroid gland, which is biologically active and influences the activity of all the cells and tissues of the body. What do thyroid hormones do? The T3 which comes from the T4 and also that which is secreted directly by the thyroid gland influence the metabolism of body cells. It regulates the speed with which the body cells work. What can go wrong? Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) – not enough thyroxine is produced for the bodies needs. Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) – too much thyroxine is produced for the bodies needs. Hypothyroidism is the most common. Thyroid disorders tend mainly to occur in women, although they can occur in anybody, even children and babies. Common symptoms Hypothyroidism: tiredness, feeling cold, slow heart rate, constipation, weight gain, poor concentration, depression. Hyperthyroidism: weight loss, rapid heart rate, increased

bowel movements or diarrhea, heat intolerance, anxiety and sometimes sore gritty eyes. Sometimes there are very few symptoms. A simple blood test at your will confirm whether you have a thyroid disorder. Other thyroid disorders Thyroid eye disease – this affects people with an overactive thyroid due to Graves’ disease Nodules or swelling – these lumps can stop the gland from working properly or may just be uncomfortable. Thyroid cancer – this is very rare but it is important to get a doctor to check any lumps in the neck Having a baby can sometimes trigger a thyroid disorder. This is known as post partum thyroiditis. It is usually a temporary but can return each time you have a baby. How is the thyroid controlled? In the brain there is a gland known as the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland senses the level of thyroid hormones in the blood and reacts by secreting a hormone called thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and this hormone activates the thyroid gland to produce more T4 and T3. When the thyroid levels rise above normal the pituitary stops secreting TSH so that the thyroid stops working so hard and the production of T4 and T3 is reduced. What causes thyroid disorders? There are many different causes of thyroid disease but the most common cause is autoimmune thyroid disease - a self destructive process in which the body’s immune system attacks the thyroid cells as though they were foreign cells.

In response the thyroid gland becomes either under or overactive. Thyroid disorders can run in families. Diagnosis Thyroid disease is easily diagnosed by a simple blood test. Treatment Most thyroid disorders are treated with medication. There are other treatments for conditions which cannot be treated with medication. Pot your way to fruit this year Always wanted to grow your own fruit trees, but donâ€™t have a garden? Well, you can still have your mini orchard on a terrace, patio or balcony if you use pots to plant your trees in.

On a deck, on a patio, or even on a sliver of balcony, a dwarf fruit tree needs sunlight and almost no growing room. You can move it, although once the container is full of soil and the tree gains bulk, you may not wish to move it often. You also will want to keep the potted tree within reach of the hose for easy maintenance. Otherwise, get set for easy pickings of apples, pears, figs, or other fruit, no matter how limited your space is. Choose a tree with a balanced shape, such as a tree with four to five solid, evenly spaced branches. You may not be able to see the roots, but they are important. There should be plenty of undamaged, fine white roots (known as hair roots). The more healthy hair roots on the tree, the better the chance of transplant success because these are the tree's lifeline to nutrients and water. HOW TO POT A FRUIT TREE 1. ADD SOIL Make sure drainage holes are clear in a pot at least 18 inches wide. Add commercial planting mix with a pH of about 6.5. Firm the soil and moisten slightly as you mound it up in the middle of the pot as a base for the roots. 2. PREP TREE Tip the tree and gently work it loose from the nursery potâ€”don't pull it by the branches. Tease the roots apart, or use a hose to rinse the soil out of the roots. Trim off overlong or damaged roots. 3. SET TREE Use a straightedge to center the tree on the mound. Let roots drape down around the mound. The graft union of the tree should be just above your planned final soil level. Adjust the mound level until it sets correctly. 4. BACKFILL When the tree is set, fill the pot with potting soil around the roots up to the graft union. Work quickly, so the roots are exposed as briefly as possible. 5. WATER Soak the soil and let it drain. This eliminates air pockets around the roots. Add potting soil if settling occurs. Repeat. 6. ADD SUPPORT Support the young tree. A 1x1 trellis anchored in the pot works well, or use bamboo or other stakes. Loosely tie the tree to the support. Rigid tying can harm the tree. MAINTENANCE Set the pot in a sunny site out of the wind. Wind can be hard on a young tree and will dry out containers quickly. When the soil dries out to about an inch deep, water the tree thoroughly. Limit pruning to severely damaged, broken, diseased, or crossing branches. Remove a tree from its container every two or three years, and prune the roots so they do not circle around inside the container. Replace the soil with new potting mix. Then replant the tree in it. The hardest task may be waiting. For the first two or three seasons, let the tree flower, but pinch off developing fruit. If the tree bears fruit too soon, it will not establish sufficient roots and wood strength. It may grow lopsided, new branches may not develop, and the tree eventually may break.

Lightweight versions of your favourite apps With an eye towards the developing world where people are more likely to own cheap phones and have unreliable wireless data access, the big names in tech are developing simpler versions of their apps. These apps are lightweight, use little data and don’t burn through battery life.

Switching to a ‘lite’ app means you’ll have to do without some of the visual polish and fancy features, but you may well consider the trade-off worth it for the improved battery life alone. These apps are also useful for travelling abroad, when you might want to keep data usage down to a minimum or can’t rely on a phone signal. Facebook Lite Facebook Lite is aimed at developing nations with developing telecom infrastructure, so you won’t be able to install it straight from the Google Play store. To get around this, open Settings in Android, tap Security, then toggle the Unknown sources switch On. Download the latest Facebook Lite package from APK Mirror, then transfer it over to your phone (via email, Dropbox, or your method of choice). Run the file, tap through the security warnings and you’re up and running. You won’t notice all that much difference in what Facebook Lite can do, but the whole app is quicker and lighter. Unlike the main app, the Messenger part of Facebook Lite is built into the same interface. Skype Lite Built specifically for India, Skype Lite is like Facebook Lite in that it’s listed on the Google Play store but not available to download in Spain. Follow the instructions above for enabling apps from ‘unknown sources,’ then download the Skype Lite app from APK Mirror. As with Facebook, this is an Android-only deal, so those of you on iOS will have to make do with the full-fat Skype. Skype Lite is easy on your battery and other system resources and doesn’t drain your data too much, considering it’s a video calling app. Usefully, the app tells you how much data you’ve used. Twitter Lite Twitter Lite is an official product, aimed at developing nations, but it’s not an app—it’s the mobile Twitter website, engineered to be as efficient as possible. Get the message and slow down Redhill-based signage specialists Messagemaker has unveiled two new LED signs which will be used to improve road safety and reduce traffic speed. The introduction of the new signs follows statistics from the World Health Organisation (WHO) which showed that 24% of all UK traffic accidents were as a result of speeding. Messagemaker, part of the Stocksigns Group, has over twenty years of experience with standard and specialist LED displays. They have supplied bespoke signs to Barclays, Williams F1, London Heathrow, Gatwick Airport, Excel, Tesco, Selfridges and many more. The new Speed Awareness Message (SAM) and Speed Limit Reminder (SLR) systems, built in the UK, are mounted to road-side posts and alert motorists who are speeding excessively. The SAM systems work by telling a driver the speed they are doing and warning them to slow down. The SLR signs display the speed the motorist should be travelling. By alerting drivers to the speed they are travelling, they will help improve safety and reduce road traffic accidents. In a study by WHO, it was found that an adult hit by a vehicle travelling below 50 kilometres per hour had an 80% chance of surviving the collision. In comparison, if a vehicle hit an adult at 80 kilometres per hour, there was a 60% likelihood of death. The same study also showed that a 1 kilometre per hour increase in speed would result in a 4 – 5 % higher risk of death. At the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Road Safety Conference, a study presented by Professor Alan Tapp for Bristol City Council, looked into the introduction of 20 mph zones and limits for roads in Great Britain. Over two years (2013 and 2015), YouGov interviewed a total of 6,110 people and found that 65% supported 20 mph limits in residential areas. LED road signs, such as SAM and SLR, provide cost-effective alternatives to constructing new road layouts or introducing speed cameras. They can be adapted to different post sizes and run on batteries which can be teamed with a solar panel. The versatility and simplicity of the signs allow them to be moved easily, for example a local council may have reduced traffic speeds in one street and want to alert drivers on another route. The sign can be taken down quickly and placed in its new location without having to block traffic or change power supply. Messagemaker’sLED expert Nigel Parke said, “Our new signs are fully weatherproof and can be used to capture vehicle data. Both signs use high visibility displays so drivers can see the warning 100 metres ahead of their location. They can be used on different mounting points, such as lampposts and road signs, and the desired warning speed can be set up quickly. For a more permanent solution they can run off mains power.” Messagemaker, and its sister company Stocksigns, has worked closely with RoSPA to improve Health and Safety standards in the workplace, on the road and in the home.

Penalty point reporting scandal Nearly a quarter (23%) of motorists did not inform their insurer the last time they received penalty points on their licence, research conducted by RAC Insurance has found. As many as 2.8m drivers have points on their licences which means around 654,158 drivers may be putting themselves at risk of their insurance policy being declared invalid should their insurer discover the information they have on record is not true. The problem could, however, be far greater as 18% of those surveyed said they would not inform their insurer if they were to receive penalty points – this equates to nearly 7m of Britain’s 38.5m full driving licence holders. RAC Insurance director Mark Godfrey said: “It is the duty of every driver to inform their insurer of any circumstance that might affect the contract they have with them, both during the insurance term and at renewal. This includes making sure every piece of information they provide when completing an insurance application is correct. “Not declaring penalty points is a serious matter as it puts drivers at risk of holding invalid insurance as well as potentially incurring substantial penalties from the police, or even a prosecution. The onus is always on the person taking out an insurance policy to make any incident known that could influence an underwriter in calculating a premium, even if they are not requested to provide such

information. This could be a previous claim, a criminal or motoring conviction. “If someone who had not told their insurer about receiving penalty points were to be involved in an accident they may be given additional penalty points, an unlimited fine and/or be disqualified from driving. The police could even seize and potentially destroy the uninsured vehicle.” The RAC Insurance research also found that one in 10 (10%) of those surveyed claimed to know of someone who had incurred penalty points themselves and then got their partner to take them instead – an offence which was highlighted in the national media in 2013 when former Lib Dem MP Chris Huhne was jailed for perverting the course of justice as a result of getting his ex-wife Vicky Pryce to take his penalty points which would have caused him to be banned from driving. While more than half (52%) questioned by RAC Insurance claim not to have had any points on their licences for over 21 years, of those that did nine in 10 (90%) said they had acquired theirs as a result of speeding. Although motorists can be given penalty points for a variety of offences, speeding tends to be the one which leads to the most points being added to UK driving licences. This is no doubt due to the use of speed cameras,

particularly as Government statistics for 2015 show that since 2010 there has been a 27% drop in the number of full-time roads policing officers in England and Wales from 5,338 to 3,901 – or 1,437 fewer officers. Mark Godfrey added: “The findings of our research are worrying. Motorists either don’t realise or forget that they need to inform their insurer whenever they receive penalty points, or – worse still – are intentionally not telling them in order to keep their insurance premiums lower. “While not realising or forgetting may sound better, the consequences are just as severe as if you deliberately hid penalty points from an insurer. The best advice with insurance is always to be completely open and honest – that way your policy will be there to protect you when you need it.”

A one off pelota match featuring players from the Valencian professional championship winning Benidorm team is to be played this coming Sunday, with proceeds from ticket sales going towards the November Benidorm fiestas patronales. The match at the Trinquet Alcalde Vicente Pérez Devesa, on the road to Albir, features top Benidorm players in a match against each other and begins at 11.30am. Team members Pere Roc II, Felix and Monrabal will play against Soro III, Santi and Carlos Ann Pellicer, councillor responsible for Benidorm sport highlighted "The strong commitment in Benidorm for the sport proving how important it is for us to have a champion of the league." Tributes flood in for ‘the kentucky kid’ Members of the motor racing community took to social media to post messages and tributes to Nicky Hayden, who died last Monday, five days after he was involved in a cycling accident in Italy. Hayden, the immensely popular former Moto GP champion, was hit by a car during a training exercise in Italy last week and suffered severe head and chest injuries. On Monday, the Maurizio Bufalini Hospital, where he had been placed into a medically induced coma, confirmed that he had died. “The medical team has verified the death of the patient Nicholas Patrick Hayden, who has been undergoing care since last Wednesday 17 May in the intensive care unit of the Bufalini Hospital in Cesena following a very serious polytrauma which occurred the same day,” the statement said. The driver of the vehicle that struck Hayden was given a breathalyser test and was not found to have been over the limit at the time of the accident. Italian police have opened an inquiry into the accident, with their conclusions expected in July.

The 35 year old American entered MotoGP, motorcycling’s elite competition, in 2003, upsetting the odds to claim the 2006 championship in one of the most entertaining seasons in recent memory, edging close friend Valentino Rossi to the title to end the Italian's five-year streak of wins. Hayden, who was born in Owensboro, Kentucky, transferred to World Superbikes in 2016. Diving bans to be introduced next season Players who dive in English football will face bans from next season under new Football Association regulations. Under the new rules, passed by the governing body at its annual general meeting on Thursday, a panel will review footage each Monday looking for cases of simulation. Any player unanimously found guilty of diving would be given a suspension. The FA also announced it has passed reforms it proposed in March, following criticism over the way it is run.The FA defines the new offence for which players will be punished as “successful deception of a match official”. Only incidents that result in a player winning a penalty or lead to an opponent being sent off - through either a direct red card or two yellow cards - will be punished. The FA says it will act “where there is clear and overwhelming evidence to suggest a match official has been deceived by an act of simulation, and as a direct result, the offending player’s team has been awarded a penalty and/or an opposing player has been dismissed”. Its panel will consist of one former match official, one exmanager and one ex-player. The announcement follows what the FA said was “a period of consultation with stakeholders over the past few months”. The rule change also required approval from the Premier League, the EFL and the Professional Footballers’ Association. Speaking in December, Burnley manager Sean Dyche said he thought diving would be eradicated from football “in six months” if retrospective bans were introduced.

Such bans have been utilised in Scottish football since 2011. The Scottish Football Association compliance officer - Tony McGlennan - reviews incidents in matches and determines whether or not notices of complaint should be raised. If a player is deemed to have dived during a game and the match officials did not recognise that at the time, the player will be issued with a disciplinary notice. The player can then either acknowledge guilt and accept the punishment offered by the compliance officer, or appeal. If it is the latter, a hearing is convened with an

independent three-man panel - including people from legal and football backgrounds - who consider the case made by the compliance officer and the player before making a ruling.Sports Minister Tracey Crouch had said the FA could lose £30m-£40m of public funding if it did not modernise. In March, the FA announced proposed reforms to: Establish three positions on the FA board reserved for female members by 2018; Reduce the size of the board to 10 members; Add 11 new members to the FA Council so it “better reflects the inclusive and diverse nature of English football”; Limit board membership to three periods of three years; Introduce term limits for FA Council membership. These were passed after a vote by shareholders at Thursday’s annual general meeting, having already been approved by the FA Council in April. “I’m absolutely delighted the FA has understood the importance of good governance and implemented these reforms,” Crouch said. The proposals were criticised for not going far enough when first announced in March. Lord Herman Ouseley, the chairman of anti-racism group Kick It Out, said he had “no confidence in the FA’s proposals” and described the reforms as a “sham”. He added certain minority groups would continue to be under-represented, and that “by prioritising women on boards, all other protected groups are being left behind”.
