Marijuana mansion busted in Sucina The Guardia Civil of Murcia arrested a 30year-old man earlier this week on drug trafficking charges after busting the house that he had dedicated entirely to the cultivation of marijuana.

by Tahnee Wright Officers seized over 100 marijuana plants from the indoor greenhouse in the Murcian hamlet of Sucina, all at different stages of growth. The investigation began after officers became aware that a house in the area could be carrying out criminal activity. Surveillance closed in on the property and allowed officers to verify the criminal activity. It was also verified that the suspect had rented the house only and exclusively to dedicate it to the cultivation of marijuana. The greenhouse had been built in the

basement of the building and was kitted out with all the necessary elements to ensure optimum growth of marijuana - temperature and humidity sensors, sophisticated ventilation, heating, irrigation and lighting devices and specific fertilizers for this type of crop. The upper floor of the house was used as a drying room for marijuana and for its manipulation and distribution. The suspect is a resident of Murcia and has a criminal background. The marijuana seized, and the investigations ordered have been made available to the Murcia Court of Instruction.

Brazilian Tiger mosquito terror beats wife on the Mar Menor in Murcia by Tahnee Wright

A 37-year-old Brazilian man was arrested on Monday morning in the neighbourhood of San Antolin for assaulting his wife. The man is alleged to have assaulted the woman in front of their eldest daughter in the family home. The daughter called 112, alerting officers to the scene. According to both the woman and the daughter, the man has a history of domestic violence. On this occasion, the woman received blows to the face and she also had scratches on her face and feet. She was taken by the police to the emergency department of San Andres Hospital whilst the man was taken to the district commissary of San Andres.

The company contracted to carry out annual pest control works on the Mar Menor began its campaign this week to raise awareness of the outbreaks of tiger mosquito larvae in the area. The tiger mosquitos have become a significant pest in many communities because they closely associates with humans (rather than living in wetlands) and typically fly and feed in the daytime as well as at dusk and dawn. Tiger mosquitos can transmit many viral pathogens, including the yellow fever virus, dengue fever, and Chikungunya fever, as well as several filarial nematodes such as Dirofilaria immitis. They are capable of hosting the Zika virus and considered a potential vector for Zika transmission among humans. To contain infestations and prevent the spread and establishment, the company will carry out entomological surveillance and lay larvicide treatments all over the municipality. Councillor for Quality of Life, Francisco Calderon, explained at the presentation of the campaign on Tuesday that it is important that residents report any pest in their home or its vicinity, whether mosquitoes or

other animals, including seagulls. Residents wishing to report any incidences related to pests should telephone 968 128 957 or email controlplagas@ayto-cartagena.es.

As far as prevention is concerned, Calderon urged residents to avoid leaving open water containers where they can hatch mosquitoes and destroy food that will attract gulls.

From next month, travellers will be able to fly direct to the Portuguese capital, Lisbon and to the Sicilian capital Palermo, via Rome. TAP, Portugal’s national carrier will fly the daily route to Lisbon and has begun selling tickets for the service, which inaugurates on June 10. Some flights will be operated by the flag carriers subsidiary airline and prices for the route start at 52 euros one way, rising to 126 euros in peak summer. Flights depart Alicante at 13.30h arriving in Lisbon at 15.00h local time and return from the Portuguese capital at 09.40h, landing in Alicante at 12.45h. The other new route announce earlier this week, is Ryanair’s first connecting flight from Alicante, to Palermo in Sicily via Rome Fiucicimo Airport. Passengers booking flights to the Sicilian capital, will check in for both flights at Alicante and remain in the departure area at Rome for their connecting flight. Bags checked in, will also be transferred by the airline onto the connecting flight for passengers to collect on arrival in Palermo. Flights leave Alicante at 16.45h, arriving in Palermo at 23.20h, but as yet no prices have been announced by the airline. This connecting flight service is the latest initiative of the company under the umbrella of its ‘Always Improving’ programme, with more connecting flight services being added to the entire Ryanair network later this year. Ryanair's commercial director David O'Brien explained that "we are delighted to launch our first connecting flight service through the Rome Fiumicino airport, allowing our customers to book these connecting flights with Ryanair and take advantage of low fares “ Adding that, “The service is initially available on 10 routes into Rome from various airports, allowing customers to connect with their next flight without having to leave the departure area and with their bags having been billed to their final destination.” The company has also launched a promotion flying to the 54 destinations it offers from Alicante-Elche with rates between 16.99 and 69.99 euros one way all Summer. Ryanair expects to handle four million passengers through Alicante this year, helping to maintain 3,000 direct and indirect jobs at the airport, according to forecasts from the Irish airline. Airlines operating from Alicante-Elche airport are scheduled to have a total of 11.5 million seats between the province and 115 destinations in Europe and Algeria this Summer, representing a growth of 14% on the same period in 2016. They forecast a figure of 13 million passengers in the whole year which would represent an increase of 700,000 on last year.Unexpectedly, travelers from the UK appear to be unaffected by the Brexit uncertainty with 5 million extra seats available in and out of the country, a 17% increase on 2016.

Centre to support parents A centre for parents with children in Murcian schools will open ready for the 2017/ 2018 academic year. The Escuela de Padres (school of parents) is an initiative of the Department of Education, Relation with Universities and Heritage, directed by Rafael Gomez. The council intends the space to be interactive, â€˜where the theoretical is conjugated with the practical and all are encouraged to contribute with tales of personal experience.â€™ The centre will be open to the families of students in both primary and secondary schools and attendance will be credited with a diploma to certify participation in the talks. The talks will cover topics such as the use of new technologies, bullying, family relationships, poor eating and nutrition habits and the consequences when children change school.

New Carrefour in Murcia Mayor of Murcia, Jose Ballesta, met on Monday with Carrefour Regional Director, Amparo Capilla, who presented plans for the opening of the new Carrefour store in Infante de Murcia. The meeting was also attended by Councillor for Urbanism, Environment and Orchards, Antonio Navarro, as well as the Director of Institutional Relations of the group in Murcia, Miguel Lopez, the Director of Carrefour Elche, Francisco Javier Navas and the Director of Carrefour Torrevieja, Sebastian Miras.Carrefour Infante will be located on calle Lope de Vega and is scheduled to open next June.

Applicants should have a 'clear sales orientation' and 'excellent customer service skills', as well as being able to work well in a team, digital or computer skills and 'great potential for development'. Students and young people looking for their first job are expected to fill most of the vacancies, but the positions are open to all

age groups and experience levels. Potential will be valued as much as prior experience, so those who believe they have what it takes to make a success of the job will be considered even if they have never worked in a hypermarket or similar position before. Anyone interested in applying for one of the new positions should visit the company website and submit an up to date cv, or visit one of the storesâ€™ human resources departments. At the end of last year Carrefour had 49,000 employees, but having recently taken over a number of large stores from competitor Eroski, they have embarked on a major recruitment campaign.

Man threatens to murder his mother

The Local Police of Murcia arrested a 40-year-old Spanish man on Monday after he threatened to kill his mother. He threatened his mother, aged 84, in the home in which they both live in Carmen. She took refuge in a neighbourâ€™s house, who alerted officers to the scene. The pensioner told officers that this is not a first-time incident. The man was transferred to the El Carmen District Commissariat and remains under investigation.

Pensioner caught up in car scratch charges

by Staff Reporter An 82-year-old man from Murcia was arrested by the Policia Local for scratching vehicles that were parked in the San Pio X neighborhood, mainly between Calle Pintor Juan de Murcia and Castillo de Olite. At the end of April, the El Carmen Police Station began to receive several complaints from people who reported having parked their cars in the neighborhood of San Pio X, only to find on collecting them that there was considerable damage - someone having scratched the sides and hoods.

Surveillance devices were installed as part of an operation run by the Judicial Police Group of the District Commissariat. A surveillance device caught the man redhanded and officers immediately attended the scene. Upon arrest, the man threw the object he was scratching the cars with (which turned out to be a carpenterâ€™s prick) in an attempt to dispose of any further evidence but this was intercepted by the officers. Charged with 19 damages and believed to have cost his victims more than â‚Ź10,000, no further claims have been ruled out.

Ian Brady, ‘Moors murderer’, dies aged 79 One of Britain's most notorious killers, ‘Moors murderer’ Ian Brady, who murdered five children with his lover and accomplice Myra Hindley during a sadistic two-year reign of terror in the 1960s died on Monday. by Tahnee Wright Brady and Hindley were jailed for life in 1966 for abducting, torturing, sexually abusing and then murdering the children before burying their young victims on the bleak Saddleworth Moor near the northern city of Manchester. Brady died at Ashworth secure hospital in Liverpool, where he has been housed since 1985 after being diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, aged 79. ‘We can confirm a 79-year-old patient in long-term care at Ashworth High Secure Hospital has died after becoming physically unwell,’ a spokesman for the hospital said. For many of his last years, Brady had been on intermittent hunger strike and staff at Ashworth fed him via a tube through the nose on the grounds he was insane and incapable of deciding to end his own life.In 2013, Brady asked to be moved to a Scottish prison so he could not be force fed, as he could be in hospital, and where he could be allowed to die if he wishes. His request was rejected in a Mental Health Tribunal as it was ruled necessary in his interests and for the safety of others that he remain at Ashworth.In February, he was refused permission to launch a High Court fight to have the lawyer of his choice representing him at a tribunal where the decision would be reviewed.

The sadistic nature of the Moors Murderers' killings made them among the most despised figures in Britain. Brady was found guilty of snatching and killing 12-yearold John Kilbride, Edward Evans, 17, Lesley Ann Downey, 10, while Hindley was convicted of murdering Downey and Evans and shielding her lover in the third case. In the 1980s, the couple admitted abducting and murdering 16-year-old Pauline Reade on her way to a Manchester disco in 1963 and killing Keith Bennett, 12, in 1964. They were finally caught when Hindley's brother-inlaw tipped off police. Although their crimes took place 40 years ago, the revulsion felt by Britons and the hatred directed at them by the tabloid press hardly diminished. Hindley was Britain's longest serving female prisoner when she died in 2002 after 36 years in jail.Successive UK governments had refused to release her despite her claims she had reformed and was driven to commit the murders by the psychopathic Brady. He insisted she was as much to blame. He had tried to court favour by helping police to find the missing body of Bennett. But despite exhaustive searches, his body has never been found. When she was cremated, a banner which read "Burn in hell" was left outside the building. Brady escaped the hangman's noose as the death penalty was abolished just months earlier and was handed three life sentences.

14 arrested over burger meat fraud Spanish police have arrested and charged 14 people with fraud and breaching consumer rights, following accusations that a Spanish meat company has been selling low-quality beef burgers with incorrect labelling. Some burgers were found with under 25 per cent beef content according to the authorities.The meat processing plant, based in Burgos, labelled the products as containing a certain percentage of beef. In reality, the products had less beef content than was claimed, with pork, bread, fats or soy substituted instead, according to the Guardia Civil. Evidence going back at least to 2002 was acquired by authorities that suggests quick-frozen beef products were being made by the company that sometimes contained under 25% actual beef. The Guardia Civil described the case as a major example of food fraud on a national level.The police investigation into the fraud began in December 2015, when the Guardia Civil ‘became aware’ of potentially fraudulent activity on the part of the company, whose name has not been disclosed. As part of the investigation, 3,000 documents were examined by authorities and meat samples from multiple facilities of the company in question were analysed in laboratories. The results of these tests showed that, contrary to labels showing beef as the main ingredient, a high percentage of burgers contained substitute ingredients. The firm at the centre of the matter reportedly produces ‘white-label’ goods for other firms – for example, supermarkets, to distribute under their own branding. The police stated: ‘The scope of marketing appears to be very high as the company manufactured white-label products that were distributed in the domestic market.’ The nature of the processed products (hamburgers, meatballs and so on) prevented the discovery of the deception prior to the operation, as analysis in a specialized laboratory would be needed to identify the fraud, the Guardia Civil said in a statement. Considerable differences in price for beef and prices for the substituted materials purportedly gave an ‘important economic benefit’ to the company in question.

Bed-ridden British woman travels to Spain for lifesaving surgery A young woman from Northumberland, who has to lie down flat all the time, has flown to Spain for life-saving surgery. Melanie Hartshorn, who is 27, needs an operation which will fuse the base of her skull to her spine, to prevent her from suffering fatal brain damage. A neurosurgeon in Barcelona has agreed to take on Melanie's case at a cost of £80,000. ‘It's been a bit of a nightmare because we've had to organise medical flights with a nurse and a doctor and to take all my equipment over and all my medication and that has cost a lot more money than expected so we still have to raise quite a lot of money to cover the cost of the flights for the flights home as well.’ ‘I'm nervous but grateful and I am relieved that it is finally happening and that we have the date now and we're hoping to be away for about 5 weeks and then hopefully come home.’ ‘It's like a long recovery from the surgery because it is a big operation so we just have to see how it goes.’ Melanie suffers from a rare genetic condition called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. It means her joints dislocate and can't hold her body together. As a result, she is completely bed-bound as the risk of irreversible damage from even minor movements is very high. The surgery is a risky procedure that will involve fusing the base of Mel's skull to her spine, to prevent irreversible fatal brain damage.

Singaporean cargo ship captain rescued from sea near Spain The captain of a large Singaporean cargo ship was found drifting at sea off the coast of southern Spain clinging to a life buoy in a ‘very serious state,’ police said Tuesday.

by Tahnee Wright Passers-by in the port of Tarifa told officers Monday they had spotted a man in visibly poor condition drifting at sea in high winds and strong waves, according to a police statement.Police rescued him and emergency services rushed him to hospital. Wearing only a white shirt, the man was ‘gripping a rigid life buoy fitted with a beacon,’ police

said.‘He presented signs of extreme hypothermia, bloated lips, face and eyes, and swollen eyelids due to exposure to the sun and salty water,’ indicating he had been adrift for several hours, according to the police. They added the man also had bruises. The Spanish Interior Ministry praised the rescue on Twitter, describing the man's state as ‘very serious.’ The ship, which according to specia-

lised sites is a vehicle transport vessel, had alerted Spanish rescue services that a man ‘may have fallen overboard’, that morning, police said. The vessel, named ‘Morning Ninni’ was sailing close to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta on the African coast. Spanish authorities later confirmed that the rescued man was indeed the ship's captain. He remains in serious condition, according to the police.

Six tonnes of Colombian cocaine seized Spanish authorities co-operated with Ecuadorean police to intercept a ship that was bringing more than six tonnes of cocaine into the country, officials said on Monday. In a separate drug seizure announced on Monday, Spanish police said they stopped a ship carrying 2.8 tonnes of cocaine in a joint operation with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, Britain's National Crime Agency and police in neighbouring Portugal. Ecuadorean agents boarded a freighter when it was almost three nautical miles off the coast of Ecuador's Santa Elena province, Spain's Interior Ministry said in a statement. The ship was loaded with Colombian cocaine in the Pacific and planned to travel through the Panama Canal and across the Atlantic to Europe, the statement said.The shipment was believed to have been organised by a drugtrafficking ring in northeastern Galicia.Ecuadorean police found 176 bags of cocaine concealed in the cargo and arrested the 20 men on the ship. One of them was a Spaniard allegedly belonging to the Galician ring. Four others were arrested in Spain. Meanwhile, a Venezuela-flagged ship was intercepted by Spanish special operations police and customs agents at sea on May 4 and was towed to Las Palmas in the Canary Islands. The seven crew members were arrested.The police operation began after Spain found out in January that a South American ring with links in Spain was organising a large shipment. That information was corroborated by intelligence also gathered by the U.S., Britain and Portugal, the statement said. Large seizures of cocaine and cannabis aren't uncommon in Iberia, which is seen as a drug gateway to Europe.Spanish police captured almost nine tonnes of cocaine from four vessels in 2015 and 2016 and arrested 80 people, the police statement said.

Spain gets tougher on alcohol controls Increased alcohol testing on Saturday and Sunday mornings is to be introduced on Spanish roads following a string of tragic accidents involving cyclists and drunk drivers in recent weeks. by Tahnee Wright Spain’s General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has announced the tougher measures to protect cyclists following three serious accidents in the last two weeks involving drunk drivers that killed three riders and left 11 others injured. The body responsible for road safety in the country, unveiled a plan earlier this week , that will see increased roadside controls for alcohol and drugs at the times when large numbers of cyclists are out and about particularly at weekends. Spain’s Interior Ministry announced plans for an additional 130,000 alcohol and drug checks on drivers at these times and that tougher sanctions will be applied to drivers found over the legal limit. Among these will be complete driving bans for anybody found to be over the limit for a second time in two years. Once those bans have been served, the driver will have to

undergo psychological and physical assessment before being allowed back on the roads. “The DGT and the ministry are concerned about cyclists,” said Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido, reiterating that more than 400 cyclists have died on Spain’s roads in the last decade. In the last seven years, the number of accidents involving cars and bikes has doubled on both urban and non-urban roads. Academics and experts on road safety say that Spain’s infrastructure has failed to keep up with the growing numbers

of cyclists now out and about, and that awareness campaigns are required, both for drivers and bike users. A startling survey released recently, suggests that more than a third of cyclists do not know the rules of the road. The DGT says it will also be monitoring Spain’s roads with a special emphasis on cyclists. This will be done using helicopters and unmarked cars, while at the same time, the authority will run awareness campaigns, as well as putting together more detailed figures on accidents involving cyclists.

Parents support website blocking by Staff Reporter When keeping children safe online, 92% of UK parents consider the ability to block inappropriate content as the most valuable feature of internet security software, according to new research from consumer security company, BullGuard. The research was published just ahead of the International Day of Families on May 15, a day is dedicated to raising awareness of the role of families in promoting early childhood education and lifelong learning opportunities for children and youth. There is a wide range of unhealthy material that children can inadvertently be exposed to online such as adult or sexual content, controversial content such as criminal activity, cults, hate and intolerance and illegal drugs websites. This also includes exposure to inappropriate pop-up ads, and alcohol, tobacco and gambling sites.

BullGuard carried out a survey among 10,000 UK consumers to establish their views about online protection. 92% of respondents who are parents said blocking children’s access to inappropriate content was their overriding priority. A further 62% said monitoring children’s activity online was their main reason for using parental control software while 49% said setting limits around internet usage was their priority. “Today’s children are true digital natives, growing up with technology as a natural feature of their environment,” said

Paul Lipman, CEO at consumer security company, BullGuard. “The internet opens up endless opportunities for children and it’s positive to see from our research that parents are becoming even more savvy when it comes to doing all they can to protect children from the negative aspects of the online world.” The survey also revealed that 66% of people have used a free antivirus solution in the past - and of those who decided to switch from free AV to a paid-for cybersecurity solution, 65% said it was because they wanted better protection and 61% said they felt safer using paid-for cybersecurity protection.

Sanidad investigates food poisoning of twenty residents in Santa Ana

by Tahnee Wright Inspectors of the Ministry of Health are investigating possible food poisoning of at least twenty residents in Santa Ana, all of whom celebrated a communion in San Pedro del Pinatar last Saturday. Inspectors initiated the investigation after Santa Lucia Hospital notified them of four patients who had diarrhoea, fever and stomach ache and said they had been infected in the same restaurant. The medical examinations will be analysed by the General Directorate of Public Health and Addictions who are expected to issue their conclusion before the end of this week. In a statement they said that ‘until there is a definitive report nobody can be held responsible’ for what happened. The first patients began arriving at Santa

Lucia Hospital on Sunday afternoon. Among them was Pascual Rodriguez who told the Spanish press – ‘the celebration was phenomenal, none of us noticed anything unusual with the food, but after 24 hours I began to feel discomfort, with a high fever and stomach ache. On Sunday afternoon, I decided to go to the hospital. When I arrived with these symptoms, the nurses asked me if I had been in a restaurant in San Pedro.’ Among those affected is a six-year-old boy, who was admitted to Santa Lucia Accident and Emergency on Monday. The young boy first experienced symptoms on Sunday but it was not until Monday that they worsened. Inspectors have contacted the communion organisers to request a list of guests, their respective telephone numbers and information regarding the menu.

Two drunk drivers arrested in Murcia

Two drunk drivers were arrested by Polica Local in Murcia last weekend in separate incidents. The first incident occurred on Saturday night when a car crashed en route to Beniajan in La Azacava. The car was completely incinerated after leaking petrol caused it to go up in flames. The driver was arrested at the scene for driving under the influence of alcohol. The second incident occurred just a few hours later on Sunday morning when a driver - who was found to have three times the maximum allowed alcohol level in her bloodstream - lost control of her car and crashed into a traffic light on the Ronda de Levante near the Plaza Circular.

Former Moto GP champion in cycle crash Former Moto GP champion and current Honda World Superbike factory rider Nicky Hayden is in serious condition, having sustained injuries in a road accident in Italy. by Andy Mansell Reports from Italy are stating that 2006 Moto GP champion motorcycle racer has suffered dramatic injuries in a collision with a Peugeot in Rimini. According to onlookers, 36-year-old Hayden – who is a keen cyclist – was riding with a group of fourteen others when the incident took place. It has been reported that he was involved in a direct collision with the car, and that the collision saw Hayden thrown over the bonnet and into the windscreen.Ambulances and medics on site treated the injury as life-threatening and soon after he was transferred to a hospital in Rimini where he was treated for severe chest and head trauma.At 18:00 some four hours after the accident, Rimini hospital staff announced that he’d been moved to the major trauma unit in Cesena for possible surgery, with his condition at the time being referred to as ‘critical’. US-based motorcycling website Asphalt & Rubber have given out unconfirmed reports that Hayden has received surgery and is now in a ‘medically induced coma’, a state in which he’s likely to remain for the next 24 hours.

The Police Commander of the district, Pierpaolo Marullo, has announced some details of the incident, “At 16:50, three hours after the accident, my men continue to gather evidence for the case, which we consider to be serious.” “When the officers arrived at the scene, the wounded man was still at the edge of the road, being stabilised by medical teams. He was then transferred to the Red Cross Hospital of Infermi di Rimini”. “Our first study of the facts would appear to show that the blow has occurred with the right front tyre of the car and that the cyclist involved was separate from the group at the time of the collision.”A native of Kentucky, Hayden was a MotoGP world championship mainstay between 2003 and 2015, having raced for the Honda and Ducati factory teams, as well as then-Honda privateer outfit Aspar. He famously pipped Valentino Rossi to the 2006 MotoGP crown and scored a total of three premier class wins – all with Honda.Although he featured in MotoGP as recently as last year, subbing for Jack Miller at Marc VDS Honda and for Dani Pedrosa at the

HELP for the Spanish Red Cross The HELP Charity presented the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja), with a cheque for 10,000 euros last week. by Andy Mansell At HELP´s monthly general meeting las t Tuesday at the Las Claras Centre in Los Alcazares the charity made a donation to the Spanish Red Cross of €10,000 as a thank you for all the great work that they do in the Murcia region especially after the terrible floods in the autumn of 2016. The cheque was presented by Ann Sheperson HELP´s Vice President toJose Cortes Capmona the President of the Red Cross in the Murcia region. Also present were Angel Curnca the Vice President of the Red Cross in this area and Andres Cuevas the Vice President of the Youth Red Cross and Jose Garcia a member of the organisation. Joining them on the stage for the presentation was Ann Hetherington a long standing member of HELP Murcia Mar Menor who proposed the Spanish Red Cross as this year’s recipient of its annual cash donation to a charitable organisation within the Murcia region. Señor Cortes Carmona spoke to the meeting via HELP´s interpreter Audrey Haigh and explained that at the moment there was no Red Cross office in Los Alcazares. The closest one is in San Pedro del Pinatar and that this had caused problems in the past but they hoped to be opening a local office soon and that HELP´s donation would help fund the project. Social housing schedule success by Tahnee Wrightl A repair and maintenance works schedule in respect of the social housing parks in Infante Juan Manuel and La Paz and Los Rosales, El Palmar, Espiritu Santo and Espinardo was approved to the value of €605,000 last week. The schedule was put out to tender through the Housing Service and the contract in respect of the 1,005 homes will begin imminently. The contractor will carry out preventive maintenance and corrective maintenance on the buildings and houses, first remedying defects and deterioration before continuing with other works to include roofing, masonry, locks, glassware, handrails, carpentry and blinds, painting, plumbing, electricity and pest control. An innovative work order system will be set up between the Housing Service and the contractor, reducing the response time to issues.

Terra Natura Murcia celebrates tenth anniversary

Terra Natura turns 10 this month and to celebrate, is launching a special programme of activities across this weekend and next weekend.

by Tahnee Wright Over the past 10 years, Terra Natura has welcomed more than 1.89 million visitors – 75 per cent from the region, the remainder mainly coming from other parts of Spain, England and France. Since its opening, Terra Natura has maintained its constant upward trend in visitor numbers, surpassing 245,000 last year alone. These figures make it one of the most visited areas of the region, surpassing the Roman Theatre and the Cathedral of Murcia. Throughout the years, the park has expanded and renovated its facilities, which occupy more than 165,000 sq/m divided into different zones. Each of the 50 species that currently inhabit the park, some at risk of extinction, have a zone adapted to their characteristics. Terra Natura has promoted a variety of educational and research programmes, many of which are developed in collaboration with other institutions such as CEBAS-CESIC or the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Murcia. The park was inaugurated to the Iberian Association of Zoos (AIZA) and later, its European counterpart, EAZA.Terra Natura Murcia currently employs 100 people - divided between the aquatic park and the animal park. To celebrate its anniversary, the park has organised activities for the whole family that will take place this weekend (May 20 and 21) and next weekend (May 27 and 28). 24-hour library The City Council of Murcia has approved specifications for the construction of a new €1.9 million library and cultural centre in Beniajan. The building will span across a single floor to guarantee accessibility for all and will occupy a municipally owned 2,000 sq/m plot between calles Francisco Noguera, del Instituto and San Valentin. The library will have two separate areas, three reading rooms and a 24-hour study room. The cultural centre will have a dance theatre and three workshop classrooms.

What’s on at Finca San Miguel de Salinas The weather wasn’t looking so great as Finca San Miguel de Salinas held their monthly open day and Easter party on Saturday April 29. by Staff Reporter But alas, the rain held off and guests, volunteers and animals alike enjoyed an afternoon with performances from Jurgen Rost and Bernd Mann and a delicious barbeque. The finca expressed their greatest thanks to Eurofoods and Eelco Venema for their generous donation by the way of burgers and rolls for the barbeque and to the volunteers for their tremendous efforts in baking an array of cakes. Mark Poolton Jones from Ole International attended the open day with a donation of €200 which he had collected amongst his colleagues which was very gratefully received and Angela Richard made an Easter basket, raising €134 for the finca. The finca will hold a flea market event on Sunday June 4 between 12.00pm and 6.00pm and invite everyone along to hunt down a bargain. Finca San Miguel de Salinas is supported by ‘Happy Animales Spain’, founded by Mona Nowak. Happy Animales Spain is a registered charity committed to the welfare of impoverished and abandoned animals. At the finca, neglected animals are taken, provided with any veterinary care they might need along with a lot of cuddles and very often adopted. The work of Finca San Miguel de Salinas and Happy Animales Spain is not limited to the day-today running of the finca. They regularly inspect animal cruelty in the area, discuss solutions with animal owners and carry out follow-up checks. If there is no other option,

they will work to confiscate the animals and take them in at the finca. Samaritans recruiting Samaritans in Spain are on the hunt for new volunteers for a number of duties within the charity. They are an organisation operated by a group of unpaid Volunteers and are available by telephone or by e mail to any English speaker across the whole of Spain and the Islands, of any age, who is experiencing emotional problems of any kind. They run a 24 hour, 365 days a year, confidential listening service, so if you are curious about the work of Samaritans in Spain, interested in becoming a listener or maybe have a few hours a week to help with the charity shop, fundraising or administration, the time is right to get in touch To find out more and join them for refreshments and a chat at their centre in the Punta Marina Shopping Centre by the Punta Prima roundabout on the N332 on June 7. by Andy Mensall The prestigious choir Aromas de Guardarmar joined forces with the Crescendo Choir last Sunday for a concert at Guardamar Music School to raise funds for the local Caritas charity. The Guardamar choir is well known in the area as it has been making sweet music for over forty years, whereas Crescendo International Choir is also a well known and loved, if somewhat younger singing group, inaugurating

twelve years ago. The two exceptional groups of choristers were brought together for the concert by Toni Guillen, Musical Director of Aromas and accompanist for Crescendo. The choir from Guardarmar sang first, followed by Crescendo who sang their last three songs in Spanish, before the two choirs joined together for a rousing finale of ‘Amapola, ’ a popular folk song in Spain. The concert raised 411 euros for local charities which will be put to very

good use in the town. Crescendo Choirs ’s next concert will be at El Paraiso Restaurant near to Carrefour on Sunday June 11 starting at 4.00pm. Tickets can be purchased for 5 euros each which includes a drink at the bar and are available from any choir member or by calling into one of the choir’s rehearsal sessions any Friday morning at the El Paraiso between 10.00am and 12.00pm. Russian President Vladimir Putin recently criticised the re-writing of history. Timely, for Victory Day, a masterpiece of fairy-tale history was set to take place two weeks later on May 9. I suggest that Finland declares March 13 Victory Day. On that day in 1940, this sparsely peopled nation repelled and routed Stalin’s invading Red Army. Finnish defence forces, mostly farmers and foresters, were outnumbered 3/1 in troops, 30/1 aircraft, 100/1 tanks. Yet, within 12 weeks the badly mauled Red Army retreated and Stalin capitulated. Russians might consider March 12 for revelry. On that day in 1940 U.S President Roosevelt signed the Lend Lease Act. Inked 10 months before America’s entry into the war the Act guaranteed the USSR unlimited resources in support of Soviet territorial expansionism. Given such assurances, Joe Stalin one year later, placed 4.5 million Red Army troops on Europe’s borders; the invasion and occupation of which was scheduled for July 1941. Predictably, Germany took Napoleon’s advice: ‘he who hits first hits twice’. On June 22, 1941, Germany pre-emptively struck. Within 12 weeks the Red Army was routed and swept back to the gates of Leningrad, Moscow and Stalingrad. An irony Russians prefer not to mention is that Soviet General Andrei Vlasov, eulogised for his defence of Moscow, later defected to the Reich taking his armies with him.When Victory Day is celebrated whose victory is it? Recognition ought to go to U.S President Roosevelt and Britain’s wartime premier Winston Churchill. Such was the volume of aid sent to the near defeated USSR that Soviet dictator Joe Stalin and Marshal Georgy Zhukov gave credit where credit was due. Chief of Soviet General Staff Marshal Georgy K.

Zhukov, in his memoirs, says ‘U.S aid to the Soviet Union during World War II was crucial to the victory over Nazi Germany.’ As reported in the Los Angeles Times (Oct 20, 1987) Josef Stalin wrote to Roosevelt: “We would have been in a difficult position without American gunpowder, we could not have produced the quantities of ammunition we needed. Without U.S Studebakers we would have had noth-

ing with which to pull our artillery. They largely provided our transport at the front, producing steels, necessary for the most diverse needs of war, also involved certain U.S supplies.” Albert L. Weeks in his Russia’s Life-Saver: Lend-Lease Aid to the USSR: “The victory over Nazi Germany was achieved through the economic power of the United States who, for reasons that defy logic, made the ultimate sacrifice to keep in power a regime as brutal as their Nazi enemy.”

How long does your weekly shop take? Supermarkets can control our walking speed when shopping, new research has found, by changing the pattern or markings on the floor. A study by Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM), demonstrates that retail managers can persuade customers to walk at the ideal pace, either quicker or slower, on their shopping trip, by altering lines and patterns. Bram Van den Bergh, who led the research, said: ‘Managing the flow of customers can be a challenge for retailers. When customers rush through the store, they miss interesting products and buy less. Spending too much time in front of the shelves can lead to annoying congestion in the aisles, which also leads to declining sales. ‘It has been known for some time that walking speed plays an important role in shoppers’ purchasing decisions. But until now it was unclear what retail managers could do to influence the pace of their customers. This research was set up to find out how they might achieve this.’ The research reveals that closely spaced, horizontal lines on the floor slow the pace at which shoppers walk down an aisle, encouraging them to browse. Widen the gaps between the lines and shoppers move more quickly. Marks on the floor alter the perception of the length of the aisle with more frequent lines making shoppers believe that the end is farther away so they instinctively slow down. If the lines are further apart, shoppers speed up because they think the end is nearer. The researchers observed 4,000 people in a series of experiments that were conducted both in-store and in a lab. If the lines were 20 inches apart, they found it created the optical illusion that the end of the aisle was further away. Shoppers then tended to slow their pace. In subsequent tests, slower shoppers were found to be much better at recalling what products they had seen than those who sped through. The researchers related their findings to goal gradient theory: when an individual is closer to their goal, in this case, the end of the aisle, they will walk faster to reach it.

I know my plaice

I love fish and chips, but it’s never as good as the old fashioned grub from my boyhood days when lard was used in the frying. Pure poison we are now told, but the smell from the chip shop was exquisite and the taste of the food even more so. Life turns on a sixpence my dad used to say and it’s true, because one of the most significant moments of my life occurred in our local chippie on the council estate where we lived. It was a Friday night, so there was a long queue when I arrived and as it snaked its way towards the order counter, I had time to peruse the tasty items on offer in the glass fronted cabinet. Do I fancy a piece of haddock I thought, or perhaps a spam fritter or savaloy. But savaloys weren’t really my thing. No batter for a start. What about one of those nice pies keeping warm in the rotisserie. But then I saw a solitary piece of fish away from the cod and haddock and I made up my mind. Tonight I will have plaice, more expensive but what the heck. I just hoped nobody else would buy it. I was next in line when I caught sight of the wall calendar which depicted a pretty scene of pastel houses tumbling over themselves surrounding a small harbour. I left the queue to look at this closely. It was stunning and I could almost see myself in the picture leaning on the stone wall gazing out over the bobbing fishing boats. “What can I do you for mate?” I vaguely heard the assistant call out. But I was transfixed and could not tear my eyes away from the scene. ‘Polperro’ it said below the picture and I knew with absolute certainty, that’s where I wanted to live. I hadn’t noticed that the bloke behind me had been served in my absence, but luckily the kind lady behind beckoned me forward to make my order. “Plaice and chips please” I said cheerfully and was suddenly ravenous for that expensive piece of fish. My future stars had just changed. “Sorry, that gentleman had the last one” said the assistant. Damn, it looked like it was a battered sausage after all. But six months later I was living in beautiful Cornwall and there were no regrets about losing my plaice.

Position of adjectives Basic Spanish for everyday needs by

There are so many more things to the Spanish language than verbs. Have you ever puzzled about the position of adjectives? I’m sure it must have kept you awake for at least five minutes some night or other. This is what happens – you start off by assuming that adjectives go in front of nouns and are reassured in this assumption by the fact that the barman always understands y o u when you say “grande cerveza”. Then you learn that that was wrong and that the barman was just humouring you. You should have been saying “cerveza grande” all along because in Spanish adjectives go after the things they describe – car fast, dress blue etc. Well, all of that is fine until you start paying closer attention to the Spanish that you see and hear around you and discover that in fact, sometimes, adjectives go in front of nouns, but it’s extremely difficult to work out why. So, here are some guidelines which might be of assistance. Adjectives follow nouns when they describe it and differente it from other nouns. For example “el vestido azul” (the blue dress) differentiates it from “el vestido verde” and “el vestido amarillo”. However, the adjective goes in front of the nouns when it describes some inherent quality in the noun, rather than differentiating it from other nouns of a similar ilk. This is more difficult to explain than to show examples, I feel, so here we go: La blanca nieve (the white snow); la roja sangre (the red blood); las altas montañas (the high mountains); la mejor idea (the best idea); un buen amigo (a good friend); el grave error (the serious mistake). In all of these examples the adjectives intensify and enhance the nouns. I know you could argue that there are low mountains, bad ideas or not so serious mistakes, but the idea behind these expressions is not to differentiate the nouns from others, but to enhance their inherent qualities.There are other kinds of adjectives that always go in front of nouns, such as the words for this, that, my, and another: este hombre; esa mujer, mi amigo, otro día. When there are two adjectives, we can link them with “y” or we can surround the noun with the less important adjective first. “El coche caro y rápido” “Los jugadores altos y fuertes” “La famosa autora inglesa” “Las viejas casas coloniales”. As you can probably imagine, sometimes the judgment about what is more important is a subjective one.Finally, sometimes the position of the adjectives changes the meaning – before the noun it is more figurative, and after the noun it is more literal. For example: Un gran hombre (a great man) - Un hombre grande (a big man); el nuevo coche (the new car - replacement) - el coche nuevo (the “brand” new car); mi único amigo (my only friend) - mi amigo único (unique); pobre gente (poor people - to be pitied) -gente pobre (people with no money).

Spain demands deeper euro zone integration

Spain's conservative government has demanded deeper integration in the euro zone, suggesting in a paper to Brussels that members of the bloc should pool debt management and share a budget to fight crisis financial shocks. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and France's new President Emmanuel Macron agreed on Monday to an initiative for deeper European Union integration and opened the door to changing the bloc's treaties after meeting in Berlin. Spain is not alone - France is also pushing for greater cooperation among the 19 countries that use the euro currency. The demand comes after the EU was rocked by Britain's decision to leave, prompting countries to take positions on how best to shore up unity in the bloc. Spain's proposals, which also include a common euro zone unemployment insurance scheme, were submitted to the European Commission in February but came to light this week and were released by the economy ministry on Tuesday. Spanish conservative Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has long called for further integration and a euro zone banking union, including creating a deposit insurance scheme. Spanish government's proposals go even further than those

Germany and France have proposed, including suggesting common debt management is a vital part of any fiscal union. ‘Participating member states should allow for a certain degree of debt mutualisation,’ the paper said. It later added: ‘The introduction of a euro area Treasury... and the possibility for common debt issuance could also be envisaged.’ The joint Eurobond idea has been shunned by Germany amid concerns it would have to bankroll others and Macron has said he did not favour mutualising debt.

Rajoy had already pushed for jointly issued Eurobonds in 2012, at a time when his government was trying to steer Spain through one of its deepest ever recessions and had to request a European bailout for the country's weakest banks. Spain, the euro zone's fourth-largest economy, has since recovered to become one of the fastest-growing in the bloc. Madrid's latest proposals also included a common ‘rainy day fund’ for the euro zone that could used to counter financial shocks and support investment.

Work friendships can contribute to a lack of creative diversity in the office, according to new research from Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University. ‘Relational capital and individual exploration: Unravelling the influence of goal alignment and knowledge acquisition’, a paper that examines the double-edged sword of friendships between colleagues, has revealed that work friendships discourage employees from challenging ‘group think’. On everyone’s lips Portugal has won the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time, narrowly beating Bulgaria and Moldova in a nailbiting grand final… nail-biting is an understatement, I was bricking it! Former X-Factor contestant Lucie Jones provided the UK with its highest score since 2009, finishing in 15th place with 111 points. Salvador Sobral’s poignant song Amar Pelos Dois emerged victorious with 758 points, with the 27-year-old describing his win as a “victory for music”. Portugal are the longest-running contestants never to have won the competition, despite trying for 53 years. Amor Pelos Dois was written by Sobral’s sister, Luisa, who finished third in Portugal’s version of Pop Idol – the same contest that the Eurovision winner finished seventh in. As Sobral collected the trophy, Graham Norton – who provided the commentary for the ceremony – noted that the singer looked as “nonplussed now as he has throughout this competition” despite not being touted as a favourite throughout this week’s semi-finals.

Hot off the press Brad Pitt has insisted he’s not suicidal following his split from Angelina Jolie and subsequent public custody battle over their six children. BGT scandal… again! Angara Contortion, the contortionist group who made us and David Walliams gasp in horror and admiration with their frankly insane body skills/strength/flexibility on Britain's Got Talent, have found themselves caught up in a cheating scandal. The group, who bagged four massive yeses from the judges, are apparently already mega successful as they have spent years travelling the world as part of the famous dance troupe Cirque du Soleil. Cirque du Soleil is the largest theatrical production in the world and the show has been watched by 160 million people in 400+ countries. The group have also performed on James Corden's Late Late Show in L.A. My thoughts: Come on people, we all know that BGT is a heavily, over-produced show, which is done mainly for entertainment value. Half the acts are scouted and invited on the show anyway! The performance was still incredible regardless of their background and career… enough!

Oh yes they did The Rojales Pantomime Group recently made generous donations amounting to a grand total of €2000 to good causes in the area.

The money came from ticket sales for their annual January pantomime production, which this year, was Sleeping Beauty. The funds were distributed between charities, social services departments in nearby towns and a local school. Mike Smith, president of group was delighted to present donations on behalf of the group to the SAT animal rescue centre in Dolores. The money will go towards the constructions of their new kennels and manager, Julia Kennedy was very pleased

to accept the donation. Sue Sellwood, from Paul Cunningham Nurses also accepted a donation, as did the Mayor of Rojales whose cheque for 700 euros will go to the town’s Social Services Department. The Mayor of Los Montesinos Jose Manuel Burton also received a donation for Social Services in the town. This year, the group were asked if they could buy a musical instrument for local music school, Escuela de Musica Los Montesinos.

Musical instruments are very expensive, meaning many parents cannot afford to buy their child their own instrument, so the members were very happy to hand across the gift of a brand new flute for the children to use. Rojales Pantomime Group are always on the lookout for new members who enjoy joining in the fun of a pantomime and are actively looking for new members to participate in any capacity, in next year’s production (January 2018) with rehearsals starting in September this year.

Jaguar meets tiger at Taj Mahal The prize winning Taj Mahal restaurant on the Benimar urbanization will be going ‘wild’ when the next JEC Events luncheon takes place at the venue on Sunday June 4. The theme for the event is a little different from normal and is based on the phrase, ‘The Jaguar meets the tiger’ and has a start time of 12.30pm with lunch served around 1.30pm to 2.00pm. Restaurant Taj Mahal, situated in the urbanization of Benimar, located between Benijofar & Rojales , has very recently undertaken an extensive modernization programme. Whilst still keeping its traditional look, it now offers a very large outside wooden façade balcony area complete with Indian styled interior décor. Across the road from the restaurant is a spacious parking area for the club members beloved jaguar motors. Lunch will be an extensive Indian buffet, offering a selection of seven starters, plus seven curry main dishes and as always, drinks during the meal. The price for lunch is 25€ per person inclusive and dietary requests, gluten free, vegetarian should bbe accommodated if reserved in advance. This coming week’s events at the Benijofar Spiritualist Centre will be taken by Linda Shepppard, a medium from the UK. The Divine Service with Mediumship is on Sunday May 21 at 11.30am and the Evening of Mediumship is held on Tuesday May 23 is at 7.30pm. The Divine Service on the following Sunday may 28, at 11.30h will also be taken by a UK medium, Len Cox. The centre holds an 11.30h Sunday Service every week, plus a Tuesday Evening of Mediumship at 7.00pm. In addition to these, every alternate Thursday they hold a Development/Awareness Circle commencing at 6.30pm, where attendees can develop their skills. The Scent of Almonds and Other Stories by Camilla Lackberg

The author presents you with three short Agatha Christie type stories and one novella, perfectly readable but without the depth of her novels such as The Ice Child or Lost Boy. All of the stories are set in the Swedish fishing village of Fjallbacka. In "Dreaming of Elisabeth" we meet Malin and husband Lars who seem to have grown apart and out of love. We are told that the wall between them was insurmountable: "Merely air breathed in and out." Both are experienced sailors so a trip is seen as a make or break situation. Malin isn't quite all there and we discover that she sees images, blood on the tiles and the face of Lars' first wife who had fallen overboard and disappeared for ever. She saw her "silently drifting with her long hair floating around her face. and her dead eyes." The wind gathers force and we see one of the worst storms that Malin has ever experienced. When the boat pitched forward she lost her footing and for a brief moment she thought that Lars was going to push her over the edge and get rid of her just like Elisabeth and inherit her family fortune. However, there are a few surprises in store as it reaches its climax. "An Elegant Death" is predictable. The opening is dramatic when the detectives, characters in Lackberg's novels are investigating a brutal murder of a woman who sold designer dresses. Her skull has been bashed in and her blood has been sprayed on the white walls. We then meet her two daughters, Tina and Linnea. The reader is told who the murderer is and why it was committed before the detectives carry out a forensic examination of the victim's flat. and discover the culprit for themselves! "The Secret of Almonds" reminds me of "And Then There Were None" but less gory. The detective, Martin Molin just happens to be invited by his girlfriend, Lisette to spend a couple of days on an island called Valo to meet her dysfunctional, bickering family over inheritance. Once stranded there are two mysterious deaths which Molin struggles to solve until he has a Sherlock Holmes moment and then it's elementary my dear Watson. Orange and cranberry champagne sangria Ok, so some people will do anything to come up with a new funky name mixing two words together like Cronut or Brexit. Anyway, here’s one that can only be a good thing …. Crangria! Have a think for a few moments and work it out. Yes, we’re talking about a fruity take on everyone’s favourite Spanish summer drink and so easy to make. Orange-cranberry champagne sangria is fruity, zingy, light, fresh and fizzy and it’s made with fresh ingredients. Can you think of a better way to ring in the start of summer. INGREDIENTS 1 750-ml bottle of rose champagne 1/3 cup sugar 1/2 cup cranberry and apple juice 2 juicy oranges 1 lemon 1/3 cup fresh cranberries Ice DIRECTIONS Slice up the juicy oranges and the lemon. Try using the smaller blood oranges as an alternative because they are very juicy so they add more to the mix.

Add the orange and lemon slices, cranberries and sugar to a pitcher. Add in the cranberry juice. Add in the champagne. Place the pitcher in the fridge for an hour to chill. When ready to serve, mix until all sugar is dissolved. Do this after it chills to reduce stirring and preserve those precious bubbles. Most of the sugar will dissolve on its own. Serve over ice with orange slices and cranberries as garnish.

Regular exercise could improve odds of surviving a heart attack Just a few hours a week of moderate exercise may not prevent all heart attacks, but it could make the difference in who survives one, Danish researchers say. Over several decades, the study found that regular moderate exercisers were half as likely to die when they had a heart attack, compared to people who were sedentary. Despite this benefit, exercise did not seem to protect heart attack survivors from dying or experiencing heart failure later on, the researchers write in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology. ‘We already know that exercise protects you from heart attack, as well as a number of other beneficial effects,’ said senior author Dr. Eva Prescott of the University of Copenhagen and Bispebjerg Hospital. ‘The main finding here is that among people who do get a heart attack, the ones who exercise more seem to be more likely to survive a heart attack than people who exercise less,’ Prescott said in an interview with Reuters Health. ‘Exercise is good for you, we know that. These findings confirm that and help us understand why,’ she said. To examine the potential influence of exercise on heart attack survival, the researchers analysed data on more than 14,000 people participating in the Copenhagen City Heart Study, none of whom had experienced a heart attack or stroke at the beginning of the study period.

Participants reported on their level of physical activity at the baseline assessment between 1976 and 1978 and researchers followed their health over the years through 2013. Based on their leisure time physical activity at the start of the study, participants were categorised into one of three groups: sedentary, meaning they engaged in only light activity for less than two hours per week; light exercise, which meant they did two to four hours of walking or equivalent activity each week; or moderate/ high exercise, which meant greater than two hours of vigorous activity like biking weekly. Over the study period, 1,664 people had heart attacks and 425 died right away. The average age at which people had a heart attack was 71. Among those who had a heart attack, the majority, 54 per cent, were in the light exercise category - and they were 32 per cent more likely to survive than people who were sedentary. People who were moderate or high exercisers were 47 per cent more likely to survive. Having been an exerciser did not guard against

future heart failure for heart attack survivors, however. People who exercised were just as likely as sedentary peers to develop heart failure in the five years following a heart attack, the study also found. The same was true for death over the longer term. Among the heart attack survivors, 83 per cent died during the seven-year period following their heart attack. There was no difference in the mortality rate between people who had moderate/ high levels of exercise and those who exercised less or not at all.

3 reasons why gardening is the therapy for you Itâ€™s time to whip out your gardening gloves because not only are digging and weeding great exercise, a good stint of gardening boosts mental health, too. Recent research carried out by Harvard University found that people living in an area rich in vegetation have improved physical and mental health. Professor Tim Lang, Centre for Food Policy at City University London, says it's widely recognised that regular contact with plants, animals and the natural environment can improve our physical health and mental wellbeing. When we grow food and flowers, we're engaging with the natural world at a pace that provides a welcome antidote to the stresses of modern life. GPs in London have already started to prescribe gardening time, with the help of Lambeth GP Food Co-operative, which aims to harness the physical and mental therapeutic benefits of gardening while growing more local produce. 1. Soil is an antidepressant Soil has been found to have similar effects on the brain as antidepressants to lift mood. A study by the University of Bristol and colleagues at University College London looked at how mice exposed to 'friendly' bacteria normally found in soil, altered their behaviour in a similar way to that produced by an antidepressant. When the team looked closely at the brains of mice, they found treatment with the bacteria Mycobacterium vaccae activated a group of neurons that produce the brain chemical serotonin, which regulates mood. Gardeners inhale the bacteria and have physical contact with it. The natural effects of the soil bacteria can be felt for up to three weeks, if the experiments with rats are any indication. Mycobacterium antidepressant microbes in soil are also being investigated for improving cognitive function,

Crohn's disease and even rheumatoid arthritis. 2. It boosts brain health Gardening exercises your mind as well as your body. It utilises several our brain functions and includes learning, problem solving and sensory awareness, keeping our minds active. Several studies have shown the benefits of therapeutic gardens for patients with dementia and Alzheimer's. A study, published in the Psychiatry Investigation, said the benefits of horticultural therapy included a reduction of pain, improvement in attention, lessening of stress and a reduction in falls.The charity Thrive uses gardening to help people with a range of mental health problems, including soldiers experiencing post-traumatic stress. Its recent research with early-onset dementia patients showed that, over a year, participants' memory and concentration remained unchanged, but that mood and sociability improved. 3. It incorporates mindfulness You might feel too busy for mindfulness, but research shows it can have a huge impact on your stress levels, helping to stave off anxiety, slash depression risk, boost productivity and ease insomnia. Hilda Burke, psychotherapist, says that gardening is an activity that seems to help a lot of people get into a 'flow' state. This means that you don't notice the time passing, aren't simultaneously thinking over other things, making plans or rehashing the past. As such it helps people both to switch off to other stuff and switch on to the present moment. In other words, to be more mindful.

One in ten Brits have been victims of cyber fraud Research of over 10,000 consumers has revealed that one in ten people have been a victim of cyber fraud. When asked what their biggest online safety concerns are, respondents cited a wide range of attacks from phishing emails to identity theft to card details being cloned, computers crashing, malware infected ads, PayPal accounts being hacked and also becoming victims of ransomware. Protecting against the theft of personal information was cited by 87 per cent as their biggest online security concern. 69 per cent of respondents also flagged up concerns about phishing emails pretending to be from reputable companies as a significant worry. The loss of banking information concerned 72 per cent of respondents while a further 67 per cent flagged up ransomware as of particular concern. Unsurprisingly though, a large 84 per cent simply don’t want their computers infected by viruses when they go online.

What is WannaCry? WannaCry ransomware has spread across 150 countries and sent many NHS hospitals into meltdown. But what is it? Wanna Decryptor, also known as WannaCry or wcry, is the ransomware program behind the global cyber-attack that affected the NHS. Ransomware is the malicious software used by hackers to block access to a computer system until a ransom is paid. WannaCry locks the data on a computer system and leaves the user with two files: instructions on what to do and the Wanna Decryptor program. Victims are warned that their files will be deleted within days if they do not pay up using Bitcoin, the world’s biggest virtual currency. The WannaCry ransomware affects machines running the Windows operating system. Should you pay the ransom? The National Crime Agency (NCA) have advised victims NOT to pay the ransom. The NCA said in a statement: ‘Victims of fraud should

report it to Action Fraud. We encourage the public not to pay any ransom demand.’ Check Point is among the cybersecurity firms warning that victims should not pay the ransom demanded by WannaCry ransomware. In a blog post earlier this week, the firm said not a single case has been reported of anyone receiving their files back after paying the ransom. Check Point also highlighted the problematic payment and decryption system as well as a false demo of the decryption operation. It has been claimed that the way in which WannaCry has been designed means that most people are unlikely to ever see their files again. Victims are expected to contact the criminals for a key to unlock their files, said security expert Prof Alan Woodward, from the University of Surrey. ‘I very much doubt anyone would return your contact request, bearing in mind the attention that is now on this,’ he told the BBC.

‘If anyone pays this ransom they are more than likely going to send Bitcoin that will sit in an address for ever more. No point.’

If you’ve not used TripAdvisor in a while, you may be surprised to see how far the app has grown. In years past, travellers primarily relied upon TripAdvisor for reviews of hotels and B&Bs. Now, there’s a lot more the app and website can do.

For example, if you find a restaurant that interests you but don’t feel like leaving your hotel room, you can tap a link in TripAdvisor and be sent to the Grubhub app to place an order. • Download city guides with maps, reviews and photos available offline - particularly helpful if you want to keep your smartphone data usage to a minimum. • Search airfares, with the ability to filter results. • Find vacation rentals, a la Airbnb, at your destination. • Use the travel timeline to get hotel, restaurant, and other recommendations based on location. The feature will also use your location to build a timeline of where you’ve been, and it will import photos you took along the way to illustrate. It’s optional and can be turned on/off easily.

HTC hoping to put squeeze on competitors HTC has had many firsts in its 20-year history. It made the first Android phone, the first 4Genabled phone in the US, a slew of the first Windows Phone handsets and so on. Its latest model is called the HTC U11. It’s certainly innovative. First of all, it’s squeezable. Pressure sensors on the long edges of the phone, bottom half only, respond when you squeeze the handset. HTC claims that this will work even if the phone is clad in the transparent protective case which comes supplied. The squeeze effect also works if you have gloves on or if the phone is underwater. The phone has water resistance to IP67 rating. So, why squeeze? Well, there are a lot of different functions, such as launching apps or triggering the shutter for a selfie. A quick squeeze will switch from front to rear camera while a longer squeeze takes repeated photos. It also works to turn on the flashlight or launch Google Assistant. If you’re texting, a squeeze launches the microphone so you can dictate your words. There are other functions, with more coming in July when HTC releases an app called Edge

Sense which will let users configure apps as they wish. So, for instance, when you’ve launched Google Maps and you can’t quite see what you want to, a squeeze will zoom right in. Other features include Amazon’s Alexa app built in and multiple microphones designed to make audio recording more immersive when shooting video. The front camera is wide-angle and 16-megapixel resolution. The phone is also the first to come with noisecancelling headphones in the box. Like the iPhone 7, there’s no headphone socket on the HTC so these connect through the USB-C socket. But HTC has also included an adaptor with built-in DAC so you can still plug in regular headphones. It comes in five colours including Sapphire Blue, Amazing Silver, Brilliant Black and Ice White. Later in the year there will be a Solar Red version. The phone has a large 5.5-inch screen, the same size as on the iPhone 7 Plus. HTC is promising strong battery life and quick charge – a day’s life from a half-hour charge. The phone goes on sale next month for £649 (€761)

Crash driver says: “I need a beer...” Police body cameras captured a chaotic scene at a Cleveland-area convenience store after a man drove his car through the front of the store and barricaded himself in a walk-in cooler. According to local press reports Convenience Mart in Rocky River, Ohio, had just closed in the early hours when a black Dodge Challenger smashed its way through the security bollards at around 40 miles per hour and crashed through the front window. Police arrived to find the car parked in the store with its hazards on, the store clerk trapped beneath debris, and no driver. The clerk told officers the driver got out, told the clerk that he needed a beer, and then wandered into the walk-in cooler. Officers found the driver barricaded inside the cooler. A tense standoff ensued with the agitated, confused man, who dared the cops to shoot him. Police learned he was suffering PTSD-related issues from his military service and job with the Federal Protective Service. “The conversation he was having with the police was deranged, consistent with somebody who was going through a mental crisis,” RRPD Chief Kelly Stillman told WJW. Eventually, an officer was able to use a taser on the man, who put up a fight but was eventually subdued. He faces charges that include DUI and reckless driving. Thankfully, the store clerk escaped relatively unscathed. His life was saved by a deli case that absorbed the impact of the car and sheltered him from falling debris. “Had the car been over a couple more feet, it could have been serious bodily injury, even possibly death. I mean that’s a four, five thousand pound automobile coming at 30, 40 miles an hour. He was lucky, very lucky,” said Chief Stillman.

San Miguel Golf Society visited the Font de Llop course near Apse

Mazarron FC end on a high Mazarron FC finished the regular season on a high note with a 2-0 away win at Cartagena FC UCAM.The visitors almost took the lead in the 9th minute when Miguel's cross was turned goalwards by Cesar only to see the ball cleared off the line. Two minutes later Chino raced down the left wing before cutting inside only to see his shot parried by the legs of the Cartagena keeper.At the other end Cartagena gad a half chance when young Mazarron full back Pedro slipped but the shot was blazed well wide of the target. Almost immediately, a flowing move down the right ended with Javi Torrano's excellent pass to Miguel who drilled the ball into the net only to see the goal disallowed for offside. The half ended with a rare Cartagena shot from outside the area which was well over the bar and the home side failed to get a shot on target in the first period.The second half started with Chino just failing to get on the end of another excellent cross from Javi Torrano. Mazarron took the lead on 66 minutes when Raul Torrano's corner was headed firmly into the roof of the net by Dani. The away side took their foot off the pedal and were content to sit back and contain the Cartagena attacks. Ray Baptiste Trophy success In the early part of last week 13 members of the El Plantio 2 Golf Society played for the Ray Baptiste Trophy.

The competition consisted of a Medalford, in which players deduct their Stableford total scored on the back nine holes from the net Medal score from the front nine holes. The course was in ideal condition and played perfectly, whilst the weather conditions made for a keenly fought contest, with four people finishing on 9 shots. The extremely unlucky person to finish in 4th position was Ray Housley, with 16 Stableford points on the back 9 holes. Nearest the pins were: Hole 6, Mike Williams - Hole 9, Martin Rickman. 1st Place in the Ray Baptiste Trophy went to John O'Brien, Handicap 6 - 9 shots (C/B 19), in 2nd Place was Lawrence Wanty, Handicap 8 - 9 shots (C/B

18) and finishing in 3rd Place was Martin Rickman, Handicap 10 - 9 shots (C/B 17). If anyone would like to join the El Plantio 2 Golf Society, they play at El Plantio Golf Club situated in Elche, Antigua at km3 on the Alicante-Elche A-79 road. The golfers meet on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays, using both the Par 3 nine hole and the main 18 hole course, which means they are suitable for all abilities. Alicante star 219 all out.Torrevieja 121 all out Torrevieja Cricket Club, with a new captain, a new sponsor and a couple of new players, were in a confident mood to face Alicante Star Cricket Club in the opening match of their new season. However, the team from Alicante had different ideas as the two sides met up for their first game in the Eastern and Central Cricket League. Winning the toss, Alicante elected to bat and started off in a lively manner scoring 5 runs per over, until in the 10th over young Ciaran Guichard bowled Lali Singh for a quick fire 38. This brought Nadeem to the wicket and he set about the bowling with a great deal of gusto and only a brilliant diving catch by Paul Harvey brought an end to his onslaught. In the meantime Usman (25) and Husnain (27) moved the score along but once they had departed, Torevieja began to claw their way back into the game. A brilliant spell of bowling from Ciaran Guichard had Alicante losing their last 5 wickets for just 38 runs and Guichard ending with terrific bowling figures of 6 wickets for 30 runs from his 8 overs. When Torrevieja went into bat, although they managed to keep up with the run rate required, wickets fell steadily and eventually were all out for 121. Only Pawitta Singh (25) and Rahul Maini (39 no) offered any resistance. With 3 wickets for Nadeem and 2 each for Husnain, Usman, and Walid bowling honours were shared. Last Sunday, after the league game against Pinatar was cancelled due to pitch unavailability, Torrevieja travelled to Bonalba instead to give local friends the Intellectuals a 35 over friendly match. Torrevieja won the toss and chose to bat first for once, managing to score a creditable 122 for 7 in their allotted overs. The Intellectuals slumped to 113 All Out, thanks to a fantastic last over run out, leaving the away side winners by 9 runs. A brilliant all round performance from the whole team and a first win for newly appointed captain Wood leaves the players hoping to stay on a winning streak as they head into their next home league game on May 27 against Sporting Alfas II. Spectators are very welcome to go along and watch the game which begins at 11.00h at their Torrevieja Sports City Instalaciones Deportivas ground. Three Premier League clubs face end of season Europe play off The end of season race to be crowned English Premier League Champions has been a fairly tame affair this year, once Spurs ran out of steam in pursuit of their West London rivals. The real drama has occurred in the fight for a coveted, money spinning, Champions League spot and with one game left to play, there could be a final twist in the tale of the race for Europe.Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal all face a possible playoff to determine qualification for next season's Champions League.The three clubs, occupying third to fifth place in the Premier League, are separated by three points going into Sunday's final round of games.But their goal difference and goals scored are similar enough to raise the realistic prospect of two teams finishing joint third or fourth with identical records - necessitating a one-off play-off match.This is the how the teams stand going into Sunday, showing goals scored, goals against, goal difference, points accrued and final day opponents. Murray unsure of reason for current slump in form Andy Murray will still be the world number 1 during Wimbledon this year, but will have to play exceptionally well if he is to remain at the top come the autumn. That is because tennis' ranking system is calculated on an annual basis, with players defending points they won in the same week the previous year. Murray has shed a significant number of points by losing early in both Madrid and Rome, as last year he was the runner-up in Spain and the champion in Italy. However, the world number one can find "no reason" for his "struggle" with form following defeat in the second round of the Italian Open. The 30-year-old lost 6-2 6-4 to Fabio Fognini in Rome and has now won one title from eight events in 2017. The French Open begins on 28 May but Murray has only reached one semi-final in his last four clay court events. "I'm just not playing good tennis and need to try to work out how to turn it around," he said. "I believe I will."He added: "The last couple of weeks have definitely been a struggle and a long way from where I'd like to be. There is no reason for it from my end.

"Movement the last two weeks has not been good. My movement has been a big help, the last couple of years, but certainly the last couple of weeks, that's been a problem."The Scot insists his difficulties are nothing to do with the pressures of being world number one. But he admitted he found it hard to create chances against world number 29 Fognini, as he suffered a fifth defeat in 10 matches. Murray's last title came in Dubai in February, a contrast to the form he showed in winning five events in a row to end 2016. He will arrive in Roland Garros - he was beaten by Novak Djokovic in last year's final - with his run to the semi-final of the Barcelona Open in April as his best return on clay in 2017.
