The AVE high speed rail network linking the Mediterranean corridor will not be complete until 2025

by Andy Mansell More than one thousand business owners from the provinces of Alicante, Valencia, Castellón, Andalusia and Catalonia met last week at the Headquarters of Almeria’s Chamber of Commerce, to discuss work on the ‘Mediterranean Corridor’ national train links. The delegation are questioning why government plans for the AVE rail link between Barcelona and Algeciras have been delayed until a completion date of 2025. The delegates have previously held meeting

in Murcia, Tarragona, Valencia and Villena to highlight their dissatisfaction at the length of time the proposed work is scheduled to take. To draw attention to the problem, the businessmen chose to fly from Alicante to Almeria, via Madrid as there is no rail connection between the two cities and a train journey from the Spanish capital takes more than 6 hours. Each province experiences varying degrees of problems caused by the delays in work, but the worst affected are Murcia and Almeria. Valencia and Alicante, for instance have had an AVE high speed rail link with Madrid for a

number of years , which connects them to the capital in 90 minutes and 130 minutes, respectively. The high speed service has not yet been connected to Murcia and Elche (Fomento the construction company assures that it will be very late in early 2018) and for Almería little is known apart from a proposed date of 2023. The delegation also drew attention to the Cercanías line between Alicante and Murcia ( 3 million passengers a year), which has also experienced many unfulfilled promises. Continued on page 3

Alcoy man appears in court facing child abuse charges by Andy Mansell A court in Alicante heard last week how an Alcoy man is alleged to have sexually abused a girl of five, with whom he shared the same house, over a two year period, before the victim reported the acts to her grandmother. The unnamed defendant denies all charges, claiming they were falsely made because of ill feeling between his and the girls families. The activities are alleged to have occurred between 2013 and 2015, when the abuse came to light, upon which the man was arrested and kept in preventive detention until the case came before the court earlier this week. During the two years the alleged abuse occurred, the accused stayed for periods in the house where the child lived as he is the brother of a close friend of the girl’s Mother who also shared the house. The alleged abuse took place when the man was alone in the house with the girl. The victim did not appear before the court, but the jury listened to a pre-re-

corded interview the girl gave to a child psychologist, where she alleged that the accused covered her mouth to prevent her screaming during the attacks and threatened to not take her and her dog to the park if she told anyone of the abuse. Jurors also heard evidence from the girl’s family and teachers during the trial which lasted several hours. The teachers reported that the girl seemed to be more sexually advanced than children of the same age particularly towards boys, but they attributed it to incidents she may have seen on television. A source close to the courts told the Spanish press that doctor’s reports for the alleged victim did not prove conclusively that the abuse actually took place. The defence team questioned the grandmother of the girl on the reasons why she didn’t go to the police immediately the girl told her of the abuse, but waited two months before making the allegations. Her response was that she was worried about the disgust and shame the allegations would bring to the family of the accused man.

Continued from front page The line is not electrified, there is no connection to the airport of Alicante-Elche (fifth largest terminal in Spain, which also serves Murcia until the fiasco of the Corvera Airport is resolved) and now there is doubt that the modernisation of the line will not overlap with the timing of the completion of the high speed link. The situation from Valencia to Catalonia is a little more advanced and, in fact, testing between Valencia and Castellón begins this month. The Ministry of Development does not foresee, however, that the Mediterranean Corridor will be fully operational until 2025. The business owners point out that this is totally unacceptable considering that when adding Catalonia and Andalusia to equation, the total area of the corridor is home to 50% of the total population of Spain. In addition, it contributes 45% of the national GDP, 47% of employment, 51% of exports and if it were a an actual country, it would occupy 7th place in Europe in for GDP. They also made reference to the fact that a road corridor of the route has existed for a number of years. The A-7 Motorway of the Mediterranean can channel the movement of exports such as fruit and vegetables from South to North in under 24 hours without breaking the refrigeration chain. Next on the agenda for the group of entrepreneurs is a meeting in Madrid in October.

Violent criminal on the run in Cartagena A twenty-five-year-old Moroccan man serving a prison sentence for a string of violent robberies is on the run from police, after escaping a jail cell at the main court in Cartagena last Wednesday May 10. The fugitive, known as Mohamed Taybi, was due to appear in court to face further charges relating to his crimes, for which he has already served three years in the Sangonera La Verde prison. Police Officers are unsure how the criminal managed to escape from his temporary cell at the court, but are investigating the possibility of a faulty lock on the cell door. Somehow, he was able to break out of the cell, escape the prison area at the court and cross the main hall out onto the streets without anyone recognising or apprehending him. Sources close to the police suggest the fugitive was one of the criminal gang La Banda de los Encapuchados, (the ‘hooded gang’), disbanded by police in ‘Operacion Estibador’ and widely known as the most violent of gangs captured in recent years. Police in Cartagena have alerted officers in neighbouring forces to the incident, but so far the prisoner has remained undetected.Mohamed T, has a history of robbery with violence, mostly conducted in the Campo around Cartagena and has also been involved in violent incidents against other prisoners within the jail.He is regarded by police as extremely dangerous and he should not be approached under any circustances. Anyone recognising the fugitive from his photograph, or who has information that may help the investigation should inform their nearest Police station immediately.

by Andy Mansell In scenes reminiscent of the 1970’s phenomenon, streaking, groups of youngsters are gathering to take turns at jumping naked off a bridge in Alicante City. Residents in the neighbourhood of San Gabriel have made a series of complaints to police, claiming acts of indecency including nudity have taken place in recent weeks, since the start of the warmer weather. Reports suggest the gangs of youths have been using the footbridge which crosses the Barranco de Las Ovejas as a platform to jump into the waters of the ravine below. According to the unhappy residents, the activities of the

youngsters constitutes an act of indecency as their behavior is clearly visible from the Avenida de Elche close by. The footbridge has seen problems of this nature in the past when a denuncia was brought against groups of youths three Summer’s ago, for jumping off the bridge, on the grounds that swimming is forbidden in the ravine. This time, they have also reported acts of vandalism against the structure of the unfinished bridge, which has won architectural awards, such as the breaking of windows. The complainants also highlight the danger of jumping from a height into water and are concerned that injuries may occur. However it appears that the fact the boys are naked is the major complaint, which does bring to mind the words from the hit song from the 70’s which dealt with the phenomenon – The Streak by Ray Stevens. Maybe the police should just tell the residents, “Don’t Look Ethel …!!”

20 months for man who blackmailed minor for naked photos The Criminal Court of Cartagena sentenced a young man to 20 months in prison after finding him guilty of fooling a minor into sending him naked photos of herself, the Provincial Court of Murcia confirmed earlier this week. The man, who was 19-years-old at the time of the offence in February 2013 contacted the girl, who was 17-years-old, through Facebook, before asking for her telephone number to contact her on WhatsApp. The man was fully aware that the girl was a minor however this did not deter him as he asked the victim to send him naked photos of herself, claiming he was a photographer. The man offered the victim between €50 and €150 for the photos on the premise that they would be used ‘by an advertising agency’. The girl sent the man at least 10 photographs and when she stopped doing so, he demanded more and blackmailed her, threatening to disseminate what he already had on social media. The girl’s father read the WhatsApp messages and filed a complaint at the police station. The man appealed against the allegations and claimed his right to the presumption of innocence had been violated.The court dismissed his appeal, stating that the facts of the case had been sufficiently substantiated.

Father arrested on suspicion of murdering 11-year-old son The father of an 11-year-old boy found dead in the mountainous area of Oza-Cesuras, northern Spain has been arrested on suspicion of murder. The father, who suffers psychiatric problems, was under a restraining order from the boy’s mother until 2013, having previously been charged with coercion and denounced for threatening behaviour. The mother went to the Police Station in La Coruna on Sunday to report him missing. His father had been taking care of him over the weekend and failed to return him to his mother at the agreed time.The National Police initiated a search for the boy and located the father in a hostel in Labanou 2km away. The boy was found dead in a wooded area of Rodeiro de Oza on Monday night and his body was taken to the University Hospital Complex in La Coruna for an autopsy. Although analysis continues, sources indicate the boy received a blow to the head with a blunt object. Pablo Gonzalez Cacheiro – Mayor of La Coruna confirmed officers have inspected the marital home in search of evidence, ‘I know the family and I am here with them. It is hard to know what to say in these cases and even harder to believe that an 11-year-old boy has lost his life.’ At a press conference, Rocio Fraga - Councillor for Equality and Diversity of the City of La Coruna, described the death of the boy as a ‘clear case of domestic violence’ where a parent uses the child to attack their partner. The City Council of La Coruna suspended municipal events and declared two days of official mourning for the boy, who was a student of the San Francisco Javier school, where his mother works.

Cartagena food company busted for selling old meat

Guardia Civil officers with the mislabeled wine seized in Jumilla

by Andy Mansell A Guardia Civil operation in conjunction with Europol has seized around 2000kg of outdated meat products, re-labelled with in-date stickers, from a food company in Cartagena. The officers, acting on a tip off, accompanied by vets from the regional health ministry, arrested three suspects on charges of crimes against public health and false documentation. In a separate raid, Guardia Civil officers, from the Seprona department also uncovered 2000 litres of cheap, out of date wine falsely labelled as Denominacion Montilla-Moriles from a distributor in Jumilla. Two men were arrested on charges of industrial property crime. The two raids were part of two wider operations codenamed OPSON IV and ANEJO

coordinated by Europol and Interpol with seizures conducted in 61 countries. The operation was instigated to target counterfeit and low-quality food and drink as well as organized crime groups engaged in this illicit trade. In total, seizures of 9,800 tons goods, more than 26.4 million litres of beverages and 13 million food units, potentially harmful to health and valued in excess of 230 million euros were uncovered. The operation, involving police and customs officials, saw investigators carry out 50,000 inspections at stores, markets, airports, seaports and industrial estates. The consumer products apprehended in this operation range from alcoholic beverages, mineral water, dressing cubes, seafood and olive oil to luxury products such as caviar all posing serious harm to health.

Murcia Local Police reported on Tuesday morning that they had found an 88-yearold man from Fuenlabrada, Madrid ‘disorientated’ in the centre of the city.The man is alleged to have left Fuenlabrada in his car in the direction of Toledo on Monday to buy wine, somehow ending up in Murcia.Officers found the man on l’avenida Juan de Borbon, near the A-30, with a punctured tyre. The man – who the officers confirmed was in good health – was taken care of by Social Services whilst officers liaised with the Local Police of Fuenlabrada to contact his family.

DJ Robert Miles dies in Ibiza

by Andy Mansell Robert Miles, trance producer and DJ, best known for his No 1 hit Children, has died at his home in Ibiza, Spain. As the news of Miles' death broke it was only stated that he had suffered from an "unknown illness". However a statement read out on the Balearic radio station, Open Lab, owned by Miles, said he had died from stage 4 metastatic cancer. "Robert was more than just an artist, he was a pioneer, a creator, an inspiration, a son, a father, our friend," a spokesperson said. "Robert passed away peacefully last night after a courageous battle with stage 4 metastatic cancer over the last 9 months. "Throughout it he was strong, determined, incredibly brave and did everything he could to fight this horrendous disease." Miles - real name Roberto Concina - released his debut, Dreamland, in June 1996,

an album which went platinum in Europe. It featured the hypnotic trance track Children, which cost just £150 to produce, and went to No 1 in more than 12 countries. In the wake of this success, he retreated from the glare, releasing a string of albums that included 1997’s 23am, 2001’s Organik and Miles_Gurtu in 2004. He was also known for launching Open Lab, a Balearic radio station which broadcast from Ibiza and covered arts, media and technology. Joe T Vannelli, a close friend of the producer, said: "The tragic news of the death of a very talented artist of our time makes me incredulous and upset. "I remember the 1997 Brit Awards ceremony very well. Robert Miles won the Best International Newcomer award, which was introduced by Gary Barlow. Miles was the only Italian artist to win in BA history. "I will miss the fights, brawls, criticism, judgements... but especially your talent in finding sounds and melodies unparalled."

Mar Menor coast suffers blue flag beating by Tahnee Wright 16 beaches on the Mar Menor coast have had their blue flags removed because of their seawater conditions. This brings the total of blue flag beaches along the coastline down to 24 from 40. Despite the analysis reporting that all the beaches meet blue flag standards in terms of services provided and the beaches themselves, the seawater conditions must improve before the flags are reinstated. Los Alcazares has had six blue flags removed: La Concha, Carrion, El Espejo, Las Palmeras, Los Narejos and Manzanares. Similarly, San Javier has had five blue flags removed: Castillico, Paseo de Colon, Mistral, Barnuevo and Pedruchillo as only Ensenada of Esparto keeps its flag. San Pedro del Pinatar has had five blue flags removed at La Puntica and Villananitos with El Mojon being saved. Cartagena had its flags removed at Cala del Pino, Mar de Cristal, Playa Paraiso and Playa Honda and the two beaches of Islas Menores had theirs removed, too. The analysis saw Spain awarded, in total, 684 blue flags (579 beaches, 100 marinas and five tourist boats) that will fly from June this year. Two less than last year’s 686 flags and one flag for every five beaches along the national coast. Spain continues to lead globally, recognised for its coastline followed by Greece, France, Turkey, Italy and Portugal. One of every six blue flags that flies in the world does so on

the Spanish coast. The president of the Blue Flag association, Jose Ramon Sanchez, explained that the slight reduction in the number of flags in the whole of Spain should be considered a ‘great success’, with regulations more demanding than ever and a more stringent bathing water and waste water directive. Members of the tourism sector and regional government

have argued that the analysis is not current (it was carried out in 2016) and had it been carried out recently, the blue flags would not have been removed. The Association of Environmental and Consumer Education - responsible in Spain for granting the blue flags - confirmed this to be true which instils hope in Mar Menor that the flags might be reinstated before the summer season.

On Her Majesty’s Shaan Service As Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II settles into her 92nd year it’s a sign of her ever enduring popularity that she still attracts the attention and the fascination of all ages. It was as a result of a lesson about the Queen at the Hydesville Tower School in Walsall that a four-year-old boy decided on inviting Her Majesty to his upcoming fifth birthday party at the end of June. Shann Dulay, with the support of his parents, addressed a handwritten letter to the Queen to inform her that she was “the best Queen in the world”, and that he would love to see her at his party. “I really like your crown and the red cloak you wear, it’s like a superhero,” Shaan wrote. “I love horses just like you. I wish I could come and see your horses. That would be so amazing.” “When I grow up I am going to be a pilot. I would like to fly your planes. Can you please come to my house for my birthday?” he finally asked. “It is on June 25. I need to talk to you about horses, planes and the poor children. I

can even make horse shaped biscuits for us to share. Pretty please.” Two months later, much to his surprise and delight, Shaan received a letter in the post with the distinctive Buckingham Palace heading. Written and signed by the Queen’s lady in waiting, it read: “The Queen wishes me to write and thank you for your letter and for your message of support for Her Majesty at this time.” “Although unable to accept your invitation to come to your house for tea, because of her very busy schedule, The Queen greatly appreciated your kind thought for her, and Her Majesty was pleased to learn that you too like horses.” “The Queen hopes you have a very happy birthday on 25th June,” it concluded. In an interview with the Metro newspaper, young Shaan admitted that he was ‘a bit disappointed’ that the Queen couldn’t make it, “but I was very happy she read my letter. I really like the Queen. I like her horses and her dogs. I’m going to her house in the summer and I hope I meet her then.”

US navy docks in Cartagena A sea exercise involving ships from the US Navy’s sixth fleet began this week off the coastline of the Mediterranean. The operation known as Phoenix Express 2017, will be supervised by Africa command and involves Naval vessels from other collaborating European countries, including Spain, who have given the facilities of their dock in Cartagena City. The month long maritime security exercise will be conducted mostly off the coast of North African countries, Tunisia and Algeria.

Spanish kids are flooded with junk food ads

by Andy Mansell A recently released study by researchers at Granada University and the San Rafael University hospital suggests that young Spanish children are in danger of developing early obesity owing to their over exposure to TV adverts promoting unhealthy foods. Results showed that children have too much exposure to adverts for so called junk foods such as hamburgers, pizzas, soft drinks, chocolate and mass market pastries, The pioneering study aimed to track the changes to TV advertising between 2007 and 2013, before and after the Spanish and European public health regulations governing the broadcasting of fast food ads on TV came into force in 2011. Researchers recorded and analysed a total of 1,263 advertisements, corresponding to a total of 256 hours of television. All of them were broadcast on the two television channels most viewed by Spanish children between 2 and 12 years old, and in two general channels aimed at all audience groups. The findings were subsequently analysed by a nutritionist specializing in marketing, who classified the different types of ads based on the amount of nutrients, subliminal messages and recommendations on healthy habits they gave. The children themed channels showed an average of 16 food related adverts per hour, but this figure rose to 25 per hour on the general channels. Dairy products were the highest featured items on the kids channels, whereas the general channels highest featured items were fast food restaurants. The researchers discovered that despite the new regulations, the instances of junk food ads has risen on all of the TV channels analysed in the study, by between 6 to 10 adverts an hour. Main author of the study, UGR Professor, Cristina Campoy Folgoso, warned of the necessity for more control over food adverts broadcast on Spanish TV stations and highlights the need to “take advantage of the level of attention children have while watching cartoons to promote healthy living habits and healthy nutrition, with The goal of preventing overweight and obesity,", she said. Adding that, "At present there is no control of advertising reaching children through video games downloaded onto their mobile phones and tablets, as well as social networks, so it is very necessary to legislate this aspect too,"

Tom Jones is still on the ball by Andy Mansell After a long, but very successful and highly rewarding trip to Albacete last week the members of the Golf Society returned nearer home to La Marquesa. Play normally began from both tees but with numbers of players reducing a little, all 36 members and guests were able to begin from Tee 1. The members are very fond of the La Marqueasa course and it remains on their frequent visit list, played by them every month. The improvements that have been made to it during the last 6 months have made it a pleasure to play and modernization work continues at apace, with changes occurring on each monthly visit. Tom Jones is the oldest member of TMGS and never misses a competition, he even made the journey up to Albacete and at 86 years of age still enjoys his golf so much so

The Velvetones raise cash for two charities by Andy Mansell The Velvetones Harmony Vocal group have had a busy time fundraising in recent weeks starting with a very successful evening singing with music from the Reef Band which made over 400 euros. Following that successful evening, the girls sang at a St George’s Quiz Night at the Bridge Bar in Rojales where the regulars dug deep yet again to raise over 90 euros for their favoured charities. After the two concerts, The Velvetones were delighted to present cheques for 250 euros each to A.E.C.C. and ALPE at their Wednesday rehearsal. Torrevieja U3A Bridge section, recently held their annual Mike Law Charity Bridge Tournament at The Asturias restaurant in Punta Prima. The contest, now in its fourth year, was attended by 41 members of the group and succeeded in raising the sum of 630€ which will be donated to the Reach Out charity in Torrevieja. Mike Law was one of the founder members of the Torrevieja U3A and was also involved in the creation of the Bridge section. He had a real passion for the game of bridge , so when Mike died 3 years ago last December, The Bridge section has continued to hold a Charity Tournament, with the proceeds going to his favoured charity Reach Out.

Zaragoza Teruel - despite the terrible damage done to this town during the Spanish civil war, has risen from the ashes to recover the peaceful charm characterised by its narrow streets and delightful buildings. Centred around the Plaza de Torico (meaning small bull), Teruel is the smallest provincial capital in Spain. Street cafes line the sides of the square. It is only a short walk to the cathedral and the Mausoleum of the lovers of Teruel whose actual remains can be seen in the church of San Pedro. Zaragoza sits on the longest river in Spain; the river Ebro. Here the towers and domes of the Basilica de Pilar rise majestically above the city. The Aljaferia, an unexpected sight this far north, is a Moorish palace which was built in the 11th century. Mini cruises on the river are generally also available. choir members from the Torrevieja Barbershop Harmonisers and the Velvetones were entertained by members of the Barbershop chorus, the Hulabaloo Quartet and the Qmix choir. The Torrevieja Barbershop Harmonisers have now been established in Torrevieja for over 26

years, rehearsing every Friday morning at Sackos Bar in El Limonar at 10.30am. They are always happy to see new faces, so if you are male and have a reasonable singing voice, call in to one of their rehearsals. They are also looking for a new Musical Director.

Life was uncluttered in the 60s and 70s. But, when they said technology would make life even easier, we sheeple believe them. Is that so? For twenty-years I kept appointments with businesses scattered around four British counties. Before leaving my home I used my dog-eared £4.95 A ~ Z atlas. The easy to understand book accurately got me from my home to any obscure address in towns many miles away. Popular today, the Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based innovation used by drivers. Has GPS finally made Geographer’s A ~ Z Maps history? I recall the Daily Mail carrying out a survey in which a dozen invited participants tested the two systems. Six of the contestants used their A ~ Z conventional maps to reach their objective; the other six used the GPS tracking system. The A ~ Z map users reached their destinations more quickly. Be prepared for more surprises; the Geographer’s A ~ Z maps were introduced in the 1930s. Another revelation is that the originator of the flawless road map was Phyllis Pearsall MBE. Little did I realise that it was a woman who, for over 80 years, directed me and millions of other motorists safely and trouble free to whatever address we wanted. Another thing you may not know: Every map published by the Geographer’s A ~ Z map Company includes a non-existent ‘trap street’. This helps her team to tell at a glance if a bought copy is illegally copied. This ingenious innovation has since been hijacked by various publishers of reference works. Geographer’s A ~ Z Map Company is the largest independent map publishing company in the UK. The Sevenoaks-based company publishes over 300 atlases. Recently, hundreds of tourists seeking one of Norway’s most visited attractions were misdirected by Google maps to an obscure hamlet situated 30km from the attraction. Roy Jarle Johansen of the Norwegian Public Roads Administration says road signs (and maps) aren’t the answer because people trust Google more. Chatting with a haulier, whose business operates between the Costa del Sol and the UK, he told me he preferred the A ~ to Z maps to the GPS system. When in 2012 the Olympic Games were held in London the A ~ Z Company was chosen to provide the detailed maps for the Olympic Parks in Stratford and other Olympic locations. As Henry Ford said, “If it isn’t broke why fix it?” Case closed, the rest of you can get lost.

I find the whole business of Health and Safety here in Spain puzzling, to say the least. There can be no argument that if rules and regulations save people from injury or even worse as they go about their day to day business, then it is undoubtedly a good thing, particularly when I recall my days working in Bermuda.It was the early seventies and although the Bermuda Islands were modern and highly developed, they were lacking in basic health and safety practices compared to the UK. Particularly in the building trade. My first major contract was the roofing of a new conference centre that was perched on top of a seven storey wing of a large hotel. The new roof was pitched and the

only thing protecting me from instant raspberry jam on the patio far below, was a four by four inch triangular timber fillet that directed rainwater into down pipes, and into which I dug my heels. Oh boy, did I dig in those heels! There was no scaffolding whatsoever, with access to the roof provided via an internal stairwell. My only ‘safety’ feature was a harness connected to a rope which in turn was held by my Rastafarian colleague Albert, sitting up top sporting a colourful tea cosy hat and singing Rastafarian songs But I survived. But getting back to my opening statement. What I find puzzling in Spain is the failure at times to rectify even the most blatant breaches of health and safety rules. Broken drain covers left unattended for months on end; doors to electrical

inspection panels damaged or completely missing and left that way permanently; protruding paving slabs on pedestrian areas; ridges of hard concrete from uncleared spillage in roadways, the list is endless and nobody seems to be held accountable. And worse, nobody in authority seems to care. And yet unnecessary cycle lanes are plonked in busy thoroughfares where there is clearly no heavy cycle traffic, and fines for such things as stowing your high visibility vest in the boot of the car instead of in the driver’s compartment. It would seem to be just another instance of an EU member, whilst praising to the rafters the benefits and advantages of membership of this authoritarian club, choosing to blatantly ignore any of its laws and directives that they find inconvenient or cannot be bothered to implement

Smart phones, dumb people “One day,” I told my English literature teacher, “we’ll have enormous, wafer-thin 3D TVs, computers on our wrists, phones in our pockets, and …” here I paused for dramatic effect, “people will be having sex via their computers or with robots”. That was back in the 1960s, and the classroom of 15-year-olds – after a moment of stunned silence – burst out laughing.“Duke,” bellowed Mr Matcher, “where in God’s name do you get your preposterous and frankly filthy ideas? “I shot back: “By reading science fiction, sir. And, mark my words, I really do believe that this will all happen in my lifetime.” Am I happy that so much that was once pure fantasy is now a reality? By and large, yes. The Internet made it possible for me to take a lucrative editing contract with me when I moved from the UK to Spain, and today it allows me to promote humanism and gay rights by working with like-minded folk from around the world – people like Samuel, a Ugandan contact who alerted me a while back to the fact a British evangelist, Paul Shinners, had travelled to Uganda to support the introduction of the death penalty for homosexuality. After using my Freethinker website to expose Shinners, who runs Cornerstones, a bookshop/cafe in St Neots near Cambridge, the story went viral and dozens of protesters targeted his enterprise, which was forced to close for three days. Shinners flatly denied that he had gone to Africa to stoke up hatred. He threatened to sue me, but quickly backed down when I unearthed a video which showed him addressing a rally where he congratulated Uganda for drafting a vile “Kill the Gays” bill. The bill, by the way, was never passed, thanks to international condemnation, but Uganda remains an extremely hostile place for the LGBT community. Sadly, there is a downside to the communications revolution. A week or so back, fellow contributor to RTN – Sammy Kruz, who works at one of my favourite gay bars, Sensations in the Old Town of Benidorm – posted this on Facebook: Customer: anywhere more lively to go? Me: well if you took ya nose out ya phone ... switched off Grindr and all the other apps, maybe you would notice that you are surrounded by nice, attractive, interesting people!!! Sammy nailed it. Look around any bar or restaurant and you’ll find folk either staring glassy-eyed at large TV screens or at mobile phone displays. What you’ll rarely encounter is stimulating talk because people are far too preoccupied with their phones. As recently as last week I gave up trying to chat with a guy because he thought his Samsung made far better company than I did. And he was fast approaching 80! So much for conviviality. In 1977, science fiction writer J G Ballard wrote a story entitled “The Intensive Care Unit” set in a world in which people no longer have any form of physical contact. Instead, they are obliged by law to live alone in their homes. Only via video links are they permitted to interact with others. If we want to avoid ending up in the sort of de-socialised, dystopian future Ballard envisaged, we need to start using technology far less selfishly and begin re-engaging with our fellow humans in the way we did before the invention of texting and the like. It’s known as conversation, folks. Start practicing it before your tongues atrophy and die.

Colour expressions Basic Spanish for everyday needs by

We are still on the subject of colours. We have covered the basic colour words which should be enough to satisfy those of us who are not interior designers or paint shop assistants. However, you don’t have to think for long to realize that colours are also the subject of a lot of expressions. In English we say things like “out of the blue” and “in the red” – occasionally we are in the red out of the blue, which is a bit upsetting. Colour words are also used in these figurative ways in Spanish, and although some of the obvious ones are the same, there are others that are, surprise surprise, completely different. Let’s try some more obvious ones first – “lo veo todo negro” (I see everything as black, that is, I have a pessimistic view of life). “Se puso rojo como un tomate” (She or he went as red as a tomato). The word for white – blanco - can also be translated as “blank” which accounts for a sentence like this: “Cuando la profesora me hace una pregunta, me quedo en

blanco” (When the teacher asks me a question I go blank). This also happens when Spanish people speak to you in Spanish, unfortunately. Another use of “blanco” is “He pasado la noche en blanco” which means “I haven’t slept a wink all night”. Another way of saying that is: “No he pegado ojo en toda la noche” (loosely translated as “My eyes haven’t closed all night”). Pink is a colour that is associated with glamour and celebrity as it is served up for us via gossip magazines. If you’d like to find out where the most popular bullfighters go on holiday with their model girlfriends, or what the interior of some film stars house looks like (as you can tell, I’m very interested) then you need to turn to the “prensa rosa” (the pink press). Actually, and seriously, they do make very good reading for students of Spanish as they are full of everyday words and expressions and have lots of pictures to help with the meaning!

The colour green is used in various expressions. If someone says something horrible about someone else we say that they “turn them green” (poner verde). We would say, for example: “Cuando me equivoco, mi profesora me pone verde” (When I make a mistake my teacher has a real go at me). However, the expression is more often associated with talking behind people’s backs: “Como Juan no estuvo ese día, sus amigos le pusieron verde” (As Juan wasn’t there that day, his friends ripped him to shreds). Verde is also used to mean immature or inexperienced (“estoy muy verde” – I’m new to this) but then at the other extreme “un viejo verde” describes a certain kind of old man, the sort we call a dirty old man - yes, the leering kind! And finally, in Spanish if you eat too much you turn purple. “La comida estaba tan rica que nos pusimos morados de tanto comer.” The food was so delicious we went purple eating so much!

Why project leaders with high status fail more often Projects led by high-status managers are more likely to fail than those with a middle-ranking status, according to research by Balazs Szatmariat of Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM). It was found that leaders gain mixed results because either everyone enthusiastically jumps aboard, or they fail, because people are less critical of these projects and turn a blind eye to their flaws. In contrast, project leaders with a middle-ranking status typically produced the best results. This stems from teams being reluctant to challenge highstatus managers on key issues because of their position in the organisation and thus permitting them to proceed with their project. Meanwhile middle managers do not get unconditional support due

to their status and therefore they get the necessary critical feedback that they can use to perform better than their high-status counterparts. The research studied the video games industry to find out how the status of a project leader might influence the quality of projects as this industry poses demanding project management skills. Balazs Szatmari, a PhD student at RSM, said: ‘We were interested in whether having a high status as a project leader makes a project better and whether these leaders can gather support for high and low quality projects.’ Whenever there is a new idea, this has to be sold to top management and support has to be gathered throughout the whole organisation. Project managers have to sell the idea and get people on board and this is where status can help to gather the necessary support to

implement the ideas. The research showed that status is very beneficial because it helps leaders to get the necessary support for their project and it speeds up the implementation

process. However, this status has a downside as it can allow senior managers to get away with bad ideas, less than ideal execution or framing their failures as success.

He added: ‘This is something organisations should be aware of when they assign the managers of projects or even when they evaluate past projects.’

Inflation begins to bite by

On Thursday the Bank of England (BOE) rate committee met to discuss interest rates and even though inflation is growing, yet again they have decided to leave the base rate at 0.25%, they feel this is the best option as they assess the extent of any consumer slowdown while waiting to see how EU Brexit divorce negotiations pan out. The BOE seems to be playing a wait and see game, with economic news being negative in the last few weeks. So it now seems like rates may stay at this level until at least 2019. With Inflation rising in recent months, hitting its highest level in more three years at 2.3% in February, and remaining flat at 2.3% in March, this means in real terms with low wages growth and little to no growth on savings held in Banks and Building societies people are worse off month after month. We all know interest rates offered to Savers have been low to zero in the UK and across Europe for years now, but that didn’t seems to

matter when inflation was at zero or negative, but now it is a worry as the effect of inflation means that the buying power of the cash you have is gradually decreasing Arguably, many savers with decent pots should invest some of their money over and above a rainy day (contingency) fund. Savers are missing out on the potential for better returns by not doing so, but they are also avoiding the chance of losing money if markets fall. But the savvy savers are realising that nowadays they have to accept some risk if they are going protect their money against growing inflation that will diminish the real value of their savings. Helping those who need it most

The HELP at HOME Costa Blanca team outside their charity shop

If you have ever wondered what life might be like coping with a disability, especially one so severe that it restricts your movement and your ability to journey out of the house, you might be surprised to learn that there are far more people along the Costa Blanca who struggle with such disabilities than you might imagine, many of whom don’t drive or don’t have access to any form of transport. HELP at HOME Costa Blanca is a charitable organisation headquartered in Playa Flamenca. HELP at HOME has identified the need for a dedicated vehicle that can be used within the local community to provide a transport service to those who need it most. Executive member Eileen Randall said, ‘we are desperately

in need of a dedicated vehicle - one that is fitted with all the necessary ramps and mobility equipment, to be driven by a suitably trained team of individuals.’‘The members of society who struggle with mental and physical disabilities deserve to enjoy the same quality of life as everyone else - this is precisely why we trying to raise funds for the vehicle. It’s all about social inclusion and attempting to eradicate the sense of isolation that many people with these infirmities regularly experience.’The vehicle and associated costs will total just over €35,000 and HELP at HOME have successfully raised €19,000 in funds already, meaning they are just over halfway toward the target. The Emerald Isle Weekly Market, held at La Florida every

Tuesday (11.00am - 3.30pm) is currently the main source of fundraising for the vehicle, but with other events on the horizon, including a Grand Event to be held in Villamartin Plaza in September, Eileen is extremely hopeful.‘We are adding events to our calendar all the time. Hooray for Hollywood The Golden age of silent movies is about to be brought back to life in San Fulgencio later this month, when the musical Mack and Mabel hits town.

STUDIO32 Theatre Company are in the final stages of rehearsals for their summer production of the Jerry Herman musical. Set in the period 1911 to 1938 this fabulous musical contains a fine mix of solo and company songs which audiences will recognize, as some of the numbers as were used by Torville and Dean whilst winning the 1982 ice dancing world championships. Orihuela Costa Male Voice Choir Concert in La Zenia The Iglesia Santa Maria Del Mar at La Zenia will play host to the Orihuela Costa Male Voice Choir on Sunday May 28 as they perform a concert of crowd-pleasing favourites. The choir will first perform several 'Les Miserables' numbers - probably the most successful show of all time. Then, in a brand-new addition to their varied repertoire, the choir will perform a medley of the male choruses from several famous Gilbert & Sullivan operettas. The choir will also perform various individual songs from different musicals or genres. The evening’s special guest artiste is none other than soprano Verity Hall who will delight with performances including 'On My Own' from Les Miserables. She will also sing in duet with conductor and singer Nigel Hopkins. Sweet potato and spinach frittata This recipe is short and sweet and great for a light meal with a salad or buffets and picnics. Try experimenting with other ingredients as well. Peel and cut a couple of sweet potato and normal potatoes, microwave on high in water until just becoming soft. They need to keep their shape. No exact science to these ingredients and how much to use but for a small tin loaf use about 6 eggs, whisk and add some coarsely grated cheese. Chop some spinach leafs and once the potatoes are done, drain and cut up into chunks and gently mix all the ingredients in a bowl. Grease the tin loaf and gently put the mixture in. If you think you need another egg or more spinach then add it. Bake in the oven, gas 4/5 or 150-180 for about 30-40 mins. Check firm in the middle. Once done leave to cool, empty out and slice

Kenny, I have problems letting go when I meditate. People tell me that it gets easier with time, and I am just a novice. Do you have any tips that would help me clear my mind? Jason.P. Jason, just the intention to take on meditation is a positive step, and it does take time to be able to clear the mind and prepare to take your freedom in meditation journey. Finding the right time of the day and the right place can make such a difference to your outcome. Never try to meditate if you are tired, and do not have a calendar that says you have to meditate when you may not want to. I imagine post it notes and if anything comes up to block my channels of peace I write what they are on my notes and stick them on a wall to be dealt with by my conscious mind at a more appropriate time!

Four steps to make your front garden greener this spring Greener front gardens don't need to be complicated or time consuming but a few easy updates can make a world of difference. If you want to know how to create a welcoming mood enhancer and an outdoor space that will benefit your own wellbeing, as well as wildlife and the environment follow these tips:

If you want a banana tree (or two) in your home, follow these tips: 1. When buying a banana tree, look at the pot size, the height of the plant and the number of plants per pot. Its leaves are fragile so must be sleeved in order to prevent leaf damage and cold damage. 2. Also look out for diseases and pests: you'll find aphids and scale insects are the most common. Meanwhile, sticky clear honeydew is a sign that there are 'beasties' living on the plant. And if conditions are too dry, the plant could have red spider mite, too. 3. Banana trees like warm conditions - they cannot cope well with temperatures below 12-15°C. And give them plenty of daylight but avoid placing in direct sunlight. 4. Because it has a large leaf area, the plant evaporates quite a lot of moisture and will therefore need some extra water. 5. However, be careful when watering not to get the soil too wet because this can cause the root to rot, which ultimately disrupts the plant's growth. 6. The banana tree has a limited range but Musa 'Dwarf Cavendish' and Musa 'Tropicana' are the most common varieties. The size of dwarf banana trees makes them suitable for living rooms. 7. Houseplant food once a fortnight will keep the banana tree strong and beautiful. 8. If it's thriving and getting too big, remove some of the lower stems so that it produces fresh side shoots.

Decluttering your house can destress your life Being in a crowded and cluttered environment can overload your senses making it difficult to relax. But how can decluttering reduce stress?'It's not easy to relax at the end of the day in a cluttered home because signals are being sent to the brain that there are a million things to do,' the Association of Professional Declutters & Organisers (APDO) tell us. Natural light tops the ‘must have’ poll for family homes The poll of 25–44 year olds also showed that a large garden is thought of as crucial for creating a good family environment. The research from Origin asked 500 people what they see as fundamental features for comfortable family living. Of those asked, more than a quarter (26.4 per cent) placed natural light as their top consideration, with just less than one in five (19.8 per cent) citing a large safe garden.Neil Ginger, CEO and founder of Origin, said: ‘Light in the home creates a feeling of space and freedom. These aspects are important when bringing up young children. As more and more people choose to renovate their homes rather than move, the decision to create areas where more light can enter the home is becoming ever more popular.’ Age played a significant part in how the votes were cast, with 29 per cent of the older respondents (35–44) placing natural light at the top, compared with 23.9 per cent of those aged 25 to 34. The younger audience seemed split on what they found most important, with 22.4 per cent claiming garden size was the crucial factor. The 35-to-44 group showed a clearer split, with just 17 per cent voting for a garden as their number one consideration.The full results are as follows: 1. YouTube to rival Netflix? Spending millions on new original shows you can watch for free YouTube is planning a new slate of ad-supported original programming to start this year, the company announced at the NewFronts conference in New York last week. The shows - starting with ad-supported programming from Kevin Hart and Ellen DeGeneres will be free to view and not part of the company’s YouTube Red subscription service. They are part of a broader push from the Google-owned video site to establish itself as a place for premium programming alongside Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. In the process, YouTube hopes it will attract premium advertising as well, helping it shed a somewhat tarnished image after a parade of brands recently pulled advertising dollars out of Google as their ads appeared alongside hateful and terrorist content. During her opening remarks tonight, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki apologised to the hundreds of marketers in the audience. ‘We apologise for letting some of you down,’ she said. ‘Thank you for helping us become a stronger and better platform.’ Hart’s show, ‘Kevin Hart: What the Fit?’ will be a workout-focused program distributed through his own YouTube channel, Laugh Out Loud Network. DeGeneres, on the other hand, will use her show to give fans backstage looks at the making of her talkshow. Katy Perry and Demi Lovato also announced new behind-the-scenes shows with YouTube at NewFronts, while TV and radio personality Ryan Seacrest is confirmed to be producing a music competition, ‘Best.Cover.Ever’ to debut on the site later this year. Beyond traditional celebrities, YouTube is leaning on its existing online talent with two shows, one from internet comedy dup Rhett & Link and another from high-speed camera effects specialists The Slow Mo Guys.

According to Bloomberg, YouTube will invest hundreds of millions of dollars over the next year to produce more than 40 new original shows and further build out its YouTube Red service.

Apple Watch sales doubled

Sales of the Apple Watch have nearly doubled year over year, CEO Tim Cook announced on the company’s earnings call last week. Now that we have self-driving cars, the next big challenge is figuring out where to test them. Most experts agree that the best places to do that are giant, government-run, fenced-off fake cities that mimic all the real conditions of the road. To that end, South Korea’s government is building an 88-acre site that it claims will be the largest test bed for autonomous driving in the world. The news, which was first reported by Business Korea and later picked up by Mashable, highlights South Korea’s growing interest in positioning itself as a leader in self-driving cars. The site will be used by South Korean companies like SK Telecom, Naver, and Samsung, as well as automakers like Hyundai and Kia, according to Business Korea. This comes after Samsung, the No. 1 smartphone manufacturer in the world, recently received approval to test self-driving cars on public roads in the country. According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure & Transport of South Korea, the K-City is currently under construction based on the intelligent transportation system of the Korea Transportation Safety Authority. The facility with an area of approximately 360,000 square meters is scheduled to be equipped with bus-only lanes, expressways, zones for autonomous parking and so on. A budget of approximately 11 billion won [€9.7 million] is planned to be invested in it.

BMW electric car plans confirmed BMW has announced it will keep production of its all-electric, zero-emission iNext flagship in Germany. The iNext, planned to be BMW’s first production car with Level 3 (‘eyes-off’) self-driving capability, will be built at BMW’s plant in Dingolfing, an hour north-east of Munich, starting in 2021. BMW released a statement confirming that Dingolfing was chosen because it and the neighbouring Landshut engine plant are its core competence centres for electric motors and highvoltage batteries. While Leipzig is BMW’s newest factory, hosting production of the i8 coupe

and both the range-extender and pure BEV versions of the i3, BMW have spent €137 million in the Dingolfing factory in recent years just to cope with the expertise and equipment needed to assemble high-voltage cars. The plant already builds the 5 Series and 7 Series and their plug-in hybrid variants. The Leipzig plant built 340,000 cars last year, accounting for almost 15 per cent of BMW’s total production and will play a key role in BMW’s plans to lift sales of its electrified cars to 100,000 cars this year, up from 62,000 BEVs and hybrids in 2016.

Volkswagen posts profit surge Volkswagen might have lost some sales in the first quarter of this year, but shareholders won’t be too concerned after it was announced last week that its operating profit has leapt 40 per cent. The German brand spent €23 billion on the clean-up from its ‘Dieselgate’ scandal. However, now it’s clearly back to making money, with an operating profit of €4.37 billion, up from €3.13 billion in the first quarter of 2016. Volkswagen said in a statement that it largely boosted its profit thanks to cost savings at its namesake brand, with the Volkswagen Group’s operating margin still on target to come in at between 6 and 7 per cent for the full year.

While its 2016 operating margin was 6.7 per cent, largely on the back of huge margins from Porsche and Audi, its first quarter operating profit jumped up to 7.8 per cent while the Group’s revenues climbed to €56.2 billion, up by 10.3 per cent. ‘Our efforts to improve efficiency and productivity across all areas of the company are paying off,’ Volkswagen Group CEO Matthias Mueller said. The Volkswagen brand saw its earnings climb €73 million to €869 million, while Bentley slowed its losses to only €30 million and Audi saw its profit slide from €1.3 billion to €1.2 billion.

First quarter profit leaps 40 per cent

On the plus side, Porsche remained strong (€832 million in profit) and both Skoda and Seat have been surging, with Seat’s profit jumping 56 per cent to €54 million after years of losses and Skoda’s profit climbing 32 per cent to €415 million. Volkswagen has ambitious plans for its core brand, aiming to climb through a 4 per cent operating margin by 2020 and 6 per cent by 2025. Porsche leads the Group in profitability, with an 18.5 per cent operating margin, followed by Skoda at 9.6 per cent, Audi at 8.7 per cent, Volkswagen with 4.6 per cent and Seat at 2.3 per cent.

7 hacks to keep your car cool this summer 1. Know the culprits. Often, extreme heat results in humidity, or dampness in the air, during summer. Car owners must realise that heat and humidity are culprits to many car dilemmas. For example, elevated temperatures may cause overheating while humidity can fog up windows thus affecting visibility. 2. Protect your engine. The engine is one of the most vulnerable parts of a car during summer. When overheating, the engine may stall or fail altogether. To prevent this, make sure that the engine and its mechanical parts are all in good condition. The water pump must be placed on ‘normal’ to cool down the engine and the drive belt must have the proper tension to function properly. 3. Clean the air conditioner. Cars are supposed to provide the driver and passengers comfort. However, many complain about the air conditioning system not delivering its job. To perform well,

ACs must be cleaned regularly based on the Preventive Maintenance Schedule, or PMS, set by car manufacturers. It is also important to use only standard and recommended refrigerants. Don’t forget to check the AC filters so that ventilation inside the car cabin is not just cool but also clean. 4. Check those oils and fluids. Oils and fluids keep the car running properly. Having them checked or replaced is an important preventive measu re during summer. Look under the hood and check the engine oil. If the colour is darker than usual, it is time for oil change. Also check on the brake, clutch, power steering, transmission and differential fluids. Top-up before going on long drives. 5. Don’t forget the battery. Many drivers believe that car batteries suffer more in wintry weather. This is a misconception. A car battery is more likely to break down in the

summer because it is filled with fluids that evaporate from rising temperatures. Moreover, it may also overcharge or overheat. Prolong battery life by charging it at the correct rate and by cleaning the dirt and grease that build up on top. 6. Inflate your tires. Do take note of the tires, which react to the feverish temperatures absorbed by asphalt roads. Inflate them correctly to have a smooth ride. Always refer to the owner’s manual for the recommended tire pressure. 7. Remember: prevention is better than an ounce of cure. This universal truth is also applicable to cars. Regardless of the season, religiously follow the Preventive Maintenance Schedule set by the distributor-seller. Also go for genuine parts to avoid abnormal wear and tear. Make it a habit to regularly check the car’s brakes, lights, oil, water, battery, air and gas.

UK over 50’s worries when driving abroad Research by Saga Car Insurance has revealed that a third (28 per cent) of UK over 50’s worry about having an accident when driving abroad and around half are unsure of motoring laws in popular European destinations. The survey of almost 10,000 has revealed that many holidaymakers have concerns about driving abroad, including having an accident (28 per cent), driving on the opposite side of the road (23 per cent) and breaking down (23 per cent). Those concerns are backed up by analysis of Saga claims data, which shows that in the last 12 months over 600 claims have been made by Saga customers driving abroad with 80 per cent of incidents involving collisions and damage totalling almost £700,000. A further one in ten claims involved theft or vandalism. Almost half of all incidents occurred in France (48 per cent), followed by Spain (26 per cent) and Italy (9 per cent). Other worries for motorists on foreign roads include having to ask for directions, not understanding

signs and negotiating roundabouts (7 per cent). Furthermore, whilst one in seven (15 per cent) admitted to having concerns about understanding motoring laws abroad, the survey has revealed that in fact around half of over 50s would struggle to identify compulsory motor vehicle safety equipment for popular European destinations. Whilst people were more likely to be familiar with French law – the majority identifying compulsory items such as a warning triangle, reflective jacket and breathalysers – around two thirds of respondents didn’t know that basic items like GB stickers and headlamp adjustments are compulsory not just in France but also neighbouring countries including Portugal, Italy, Germany, and Spain. Roger Ramsden, Chief Executive of Saga Services, commented: ‘Whilst we know that the over 50s are keen and experienced road users, driving abroad is not without its risks.’ ‘Getting to grips with foreign motoring laws and driving on the opposite side of the road can be daunting no matter how many years you have been behind the wheel.’ ‘I would urge people intending to drive whilst on holiday to check the motoring laws before they leave and make sure they have appropriate insurance cover for their journey.’ ‘That way they can get on with enjoying their break without worrying or falling foul of the authorities.’

Café Uno play for the Fred Rich trophy Last week, twenty two members and guests of the Café Uno golf Society from Catral, played 2 rounds of golf over two days at Roda Golf in Alcazares, competing for the Fred Rich Trophy.The first day’s play was a team 123 as well as individual Stableford scores and although everyone was keen to tee off, the course proved far more challenging than expected.The length of some of the holes combined with a strong wind, made for an interesting round and some average scores, which were varied but not outstanding, the best being Stableford 32 points.Day two was a different story altogether as the format was a yellow ball competition, giving double score for the player using the yellow ball. Playing with the responsibility of not wanting to lose the yellow ball, automatically does something to the brain cells. Although, it had nothing to do with the socialising from the previous evening, unfortunately, all yellow balls were somehow lost by the end of the round .Only one team managed to keep it until the 18th hole, where alas, it met a watery end, which was better than the team of Steve Lawrence, who lost theirs off the first tee. This team game along with the combined scoring produced a winning team score of

Daya bow out with a whimper Daya Nueva saved up perhaps their worst performance of the season for their last game, away at Santa Pola on a ‘real grass’ pitch, going down 2-1 to bow out on a low. The match kicked off in very warm conditions, no doubt explaining why the pace of the game was so slow. Coach Jesus had made a number of changes to his team giving some of the fringe players a game. Most notably of these was second string keeper Mochim, who was having his first outing of the season so denying Jaime his 100% record. Daya, looked to be playing well within themselves, ready explode into action, but with the game progressing at a snail’s pace, the explosion never materialised. There was very little spark from either team as the half drew to a close, a single corner being Daya’s only contribution. So it was with a great deal of relief when the whistle went for the end of the worst forty five minutes of the whole season. There were signs that Daya were upping their game a little early in the second half of what was becoming a very poor performance. Then, on seventy five minutes the away side scored but even then they managed to make really hard work of doing so. The home side had a great chance to level on eighty minutes but with the goal at his mercy the Santa Pola player fired over the bar. Five minutes later the home side made amends for their inaccuracy in front of goal, when, from a corner the ball was thumped home. Just one minute later the home side went 2-1 up with a well worked goal. There would be no way back for Daya now and the home side even had a penalty saved at the end. So, the 2-1 defeat ended Daya Nueva’s season on a downbeat note,which was a pity, as apart from the first few matches the rest of the season was good with some entertaining football and great results.

A Beautiful May Day Bank holiday greeted the San Javier Golf Society’s popular ‘Traffic lights’ Team Competition at La Serena Golf, Los Alcazares, last week. Another excellent field of golfers, including several new members, turned out and teed off in almost perfect weather conditions for this enjoyable competitive format. There was some excellent individual scoring, most notably by John Hillier and Mick Hardy but the overall winners were the team consisting of Roger McGeagh, David Summers, Mick Hardy and Alan Brooke, with a total of 119 points. Nearest the pins were won by Dave Furze, David Archer, Tom Collins and Alan Brooke. The gross 2 (for 50 euros) was not won and rolls over to the next game, which is an individual stableford qualifier at Font del Llop, teeing off at 9:20am on Wednesday 17th May. Mazarron cruise into the play-offs Mazarron FC ended their home season in style, by sealing their place in the play-offs with an emphatic 3-0 victory over CD Plus Ultra who are in a relegation dogfight at the other end of the table. After four games of the season, Mazarron were bottom of the league with just one draw and three defeats but the squad has grown in confidence and ability. They are now hoping to regain their position in the Tercera Division of the Spanish League which they lost back in 2010 along with near neighbours Bala Azul who have already achieved automatic promotion. This constitutes remarkable turnaround for a side only registered with the Murcia Football Federation literally hours before the deadline at the start of the season. A new team was formed under new President, Ruben Manuel Martinez Collado, with a new administration team

and squad of players except for long serving captain Juan Andreo and a few young players promoted from the junior team. Needing just one point from their last two games to guarantee a play-off position after Alquerias had only drawn 2-2 away to league leaders SFC Minerva in a morning kick off, Mazarron got off to the best possible start with a goal from young midfielder Andreo in the fourth minute.Chino made it 2-0 in the 38th minute and scored his second and Mazarron's third goal almost on the final whistle to give the home team a comfortable victory. Chino, who started the season in the left back position, is now joint top scorer with Raul after moving into a midfield role.Mazarron travel to Cartagena FC UCAM next week for their final away game before facing UD Los Garres in the two legged Play Off Semi Final.
