by Andy Mansell ‘May the fourth be with you!’ might be a cheesy pun on the famous Star Wars quote, but it does aptly sum up a special anniversary for AlicanteElche Airport, which celebrated a landmark anniversary this week, on Wednesday May 4. It was 50 years to the day that the first commer-
cial flight landed on the tarmac of the El Altet Airport, which is now the fifth largest in Spain and the fourteenth in Europe. That inaugural flight, a Corvier Metropolitan plane chartered by the Aviaco company arrived from Madrid on May 4, 1967, year in which 80,677 passengers passed through the aerodrome and 3,764 aircraft were processed.
The flight lasted 90 minutes, twice as long as it takes today’s modern aircraft to cover the 500 kilometers between El Altet and Barajas Airport in Madrid. Fifty years later, owners Aena forecast the airport to exceed 13 million passengers and about 90,000 aircraft maneouvres during 2017. Continued on page 3

Felicidad Sanchez dies, historic mayor of Alicante

by Andy Mansell Once neighbourhood leader Felicidad Sanchez passed away on Wednesday morning at the General Hospital of Alicante, just before her 90th birthday. Sanchez presided over the association of neighbours of La Voz de la Florida from the 80's until its last days. The emblematic neighbourhood leader suffered from a kidney disease and although she had been in bed at home for some time, she was determined to continue her neighbourhood activity until the end.
The remains were taken to the Tanatorio de la Siempreviva on Wednesday, where the funeral was held at 12 noon on Thursday. Felicidad Sanchez spent nearly four decades as president of the La Voz de Florida Neighborhood Association. In 2009, she received an honorary mention in the XVII edition of the City of Alicante awards for her dedication to the commerce in the neighbourhood. In 2012, her name was inaugurated on a plaque in the Centro Comunitario y Social del Distrito 3 of Alicante. Sanchez was widowed and childless.
Continued from front page In fact, on that same day, May 4 this year, 47,430 passengers passed through the terminal and 277 aircraft from Britain, Russia, Germany, Belgium, Norway and of course, Madrid landed and took off. The now-defunct Corvier Metropolitan that landed at El Altet on a sunny morning 50 years ago with Pilar Leal La ViĂąa, the first passenger of the airport, was met by then Air Minister Jose Lacalle and Bishop Pablo Barranchina , who welcomed the first commercial flight in the history of the airport of El Altet (until then Alicante used the military base of Rabasa). The airport that opened in 1967 would be completed with a charter terminal in 1972 with several more buildings added until in 1996 the first major expansion was undertaken. The airport has been key to the tourist development of the province since the early 1970s. Until the inauguration of the charter terminal, tourists arriving from London landed in Valencia and from there they arrived in Benidorm by bus. Since then the airport has undergone two major transformations to become one of the most modern terminals in Spain with the capacity to move 20 million passengers each year. However those figures would depend on a solution to the ongoing problems regarding lack of rail connections with Elche, Alicante and Benidorm, a city that caters for 50% of passengers who start their holiday on the Costa Blanca. The new terminal, completed at a cost of 384 million euros in 2011, is 15,500 m2. In size, with 148 check-in desks, 42 boarding gates, 21 travelators and 25 luggage collection areas and employs 60,000 staff. In addition it has our thousand two hundred parking spaces and an area reserved for the arrival of TRAM and / or the railway, should that ever happen. Earlier in the 20th Century, the airfield and runways of El Altet actually saw the first civilian flights ever to land in Spain, run by the French company Lignes Aeriennes LatĂŠcoĂŠre. This company used it as a stopover of its mails with Dakar (Senegal) at the beginning of century XX. From the year 1927 its use was carried out by the company Aeropostale, forerunner of Air France.

Man dies after stabbing outside hospital by Andy Mansell A man who intervened to break up a fight between a group of local girls outside the Molino del Segura Hospital earlier this week was stabbed to death by the brother of one of the girls. The deceased, only identified as Juan Carlos, was waiting outside the hospital for his wife, who was accompanying their 12 year old son whilst he received surgery to a broken arm. A police spokesman talking to the Spanish press explained that investigating officers are still attempting to piece together the exact events of the evening in question. However, after interviewing witnesses to the incident, they could reveal that a fight broke out, close to the hospital between a group of girls from the social housing development which surrounds.The victim approached the group of fighting girls in an attempt to mediate and stop the scuffles continuing. At this point, the assailant, only identified by the police as ‘El Gaucho’, appeared on the scene, threatening one of the women and when Juan Carlos tried to stop him beating her, El Gaucho turned around and stabbed the man four times. The assailant ran off, leaving the seriously injured man to make his own way back into the hospital on foot, where he was discovered by one of the duty doctors bleeding lightly from his wounds. Dr Antonio Garcia, who attended the victim explained that the wounded man, entered the emergency area on foot, conscious and oriented, reported to a nurse, who laid him on a

stretcher. The nurse called for Dr Garcia to attend the victim, reporting that he had been stabbed: "In less than a minute, he began to lose consciousness, so we thought that not only was there a pulmonary perforation, but that the knife had hit one of the main arteries, with possible internal bleeding, because there was hardly any blood visible externally “ explained the Doctor. Garcia, began to administer CPR to the victim, but was unable to resuscitate the injured man and he died within ten minutes of arriving in the hospital. He called the Police, whose station is adjacent to the hospital and they arrived just before Juan Carlos died. The cause of death was attributed to a single stab wound to the hematorix area of the back. "His heroism killed him," proclaimed Dr Garcia. Eyewitnesses to the incident were able to give police clues to the identity of the aggressor, who was the brother of one of the girls involved in the fight. The sister came forward too, explaining to officers that she and a group of her friends had picked the fight with another group, following a previous incident between the two groups."I got into a fight with some
girls, and they beat me up," said the girl. She explained that she then got in touch with her brother, to tell him what was wrong. "You see that my brother has come, he did not know anything ... and all this has happened," she said. Police officers arrested the assailant immediately, but given the large volume of statements made yesterday by witnesses, the suspect was not brought before the courts until the evidence could be processed.The suspect is likely to be transferred within the next few days and will likely be kept in detention. Close sources explained that the Molina hospital has surveillance cameras, whose recordings have already passed to those responsible for the National Police, in order to serve in the investigation. Detectives have also recovered the murder weapon, said to be a 15cm kitchen knife, from a rubbish bin near to the scene of the crime.The victim’s wife was informed of her husband’s death immediately, but his son was not informed until after his surgery was complete and he was in recovery.

UK will not pay €100 billion EU exit bill
Britain will not be paying €100 billion to leave the European Union, Brexit minister David Davis said on Wednesday after the Financial Times reported that the EU was preparing to demand that amount. Citing its own analysis of new stricter demands it said were driven by France and Germany, the newspaper said €100 billion was a gross figure. ‘We'll not be paying €100 billion What we've got to do is discuss in detail what the rights and obligations are,’ Davis told British channel ITV. He also said that the British government had not seen a figure from the EU for the exit bill. The FT said that after requests from member states, EU negotiators had revised their initial calAculations to maximise the liabilities Britain would be asked to cover, including post-Brexit farm payments and EU administration fees in 2019 and 2020.
Spain rescues 10 migrants crossing Strait of Gibraltar Spain’s maritime rescue service says it saved 10 migrants from a small inflatable craft trying to cross the Strait of Gibraltar earlier this week. The service said that the 10 men of subSaharan origin were ‘visibly tired after hours of rowing.’ The rescue boat Arcturus made the rescue in waters off the southern tip of Spain. Tens of thousands of migrants, most from sub-Saharan African countries, try to make the perilous crossing in boats unsuitable for the open sea to Spain and Italy each year

Medical charity warns of mafia run prostitution in Alicante

By Andy Mansell Medicos del Mundo, an organization of Doctors set up as a support network for sex workers throughout the World, has expressed grave concern for the health and welfare of female prostitutes in Alicante city, who are being increasingly controlled by Asian mafia groups. The women’s situation has become an increasingly invisible problem, but that does not mean it has disappeared. Police pressure and Town Hall directives adopted by many municipalities are shifting prostitution from the streets and squares to clandestine and private premises, where the activity is much more difficult to control. Beatriz Beseler, advisor on Prostitution, Human Rights and Gender Issues for the Médicos del Mundo organization explained the problems facing support workers in the city: "There are women, mainly from Asia, whom we cannot get access to because they are in the hands of mafia”, she said.In Alicante, the organisation only has regular contact with around 500 women, whom they believe, statistically represent a small percentage of the prostitutes working in the city.Adding that, "Because in many cases it is a question of them using flats, in housing estates or residential buildings rather than streets and parks, so they go unnoticed, by police and support workers."The anonymity is worsened by
the fact that a number of the women arrive in the country from South America, "and are in an illegal situation in Spain" Many of the prostitutes are also of Romanian origin, "and although it is an EU country, and they do not need papers, they are in the hands of trafficking networks that absolutely control their lives" said Ms Beseler.Additionally, in recent years Spain has become a destination for mafia gangs, "since we are the country in the European Union that makes more use of prostitutes than any other" said the advisor, and this becomes a problem that crosses all ages, financial situation and social classes."There are users of prostitutes of all ages, many of them underage, and with cultural levels of many kinds." She explained. Internet sex sites and social networks have also contributed to aggravate the situation, as many clandestine liaisons are arranged online. To highlight the growing problem, Médicos del Mundo had, as RTN went to press, organized a round table workshop to "A look at prostitution in Alicante". Speakers include María Such, director general of the Valencian Institute of Women; Elisa Fernández, from the Centre for Information and Prevention of AIDS at the Ministry of Health; María Jesús Navarro, from the research group "Economy, Culture and Gender" at The University Miguel Hernández and Beatriz Beseler herself representing Medicos del Mundo.
Three Germans die in Spain plane crash Three German nationals died when the small plane they were travelling in crashed in southern Spain at the weekend, authorities said on Monday. They were flying from the southeastern town of Mutxamel to Granada in southern Andalucia on Saturday afternoon and crashed in a mountainous area some 80 kilometres (50 miles) from their final destination. ‘Initial identification via their ID indicates they were German, but authorities are in contact with the consulate,’ said a spokeswoman for the central government's representative office in Malaga province, where the accident happened. She did not know whether they were tourists or residents in Spain, adding that authorities were investigating the accident, including whether the plane was forced to deviate its course due to high winds.

Luisa Bone, who heads the department responsible for the operation explained: “After restoring the normality on our beaches, we are now concentrating on our parks. We have compiled different working groups, each consisting of three employees.”“ A working group will take care of the pruning of trees and plants, as well as the clearing of various areas. The other team is responsible for the maintenance of the city furnishings (the playgrounds, the benches, the paper baskets ...)", said the councillor. To date, these groups have been active
in the green areas of the residential areas of La Zenia, Las Filipinas, Campoamor, La Florida, Los Valencia, Los Dolses and Blue Lagoon. This past week they have continued their work in La Florida and will subsequently move on to the residential areas Horizonte, La Ciñuelica and Lomas de Cabo Roig. “Step by step, we will be active in all the green areas of the residential areas.” Added the coordinator. Boné pointed out that "these works were very necessary in many residential areas, as many green areas on the coast are not contractually covered by the company that is currently responsible for their maintenance.”“A good work plan and of course also an effort of the employees makes it possible for us to look after all the parks of the coast ".

RTN expands to the Costa del Sol Third edition launched today after EWNMG takeover. THE RTN newspaper is today launching an edition specifically produced for the Costa del Sol. After firmly establishing itself over the last 18 years as a popular free weekly newspaper with two editions throughout the Costa Blanca, the Costa del Sol now also becomes part of our circulation, readership and advertising area. Just three short months ago the RTN brand, with a reputation throughout the Costa Blanca for community news, was taken over by Euro Weekly Media Group (EWNMG). Military convoy in serious collision
Five men were rushed to hospital in Cartagena this week after a serious accident involving an Army convoy, on the AP-30 Autovia close to Torre Pachacho. The collision occurred at around 13.30h on Wednesday afternoon on exit 174 of the busy motorway, between two vehicles, a military truck carrying Army Paratroopers and a lorry. Emergency services were called to the scene and five men aged between 31 to 40 were immediately transferred to the General University Hospital Santa Lucía of Cartagena, where they were treated for a range of injuries. One of the injured men was described as being in a serious but stable condition by the hospital on Wednesday evening. Police officers who were also on the scene quickly are investigating the circumstances behind the accident and whether foul play or sabotage to the military convoy was behind the incident. Police were unable to confirm whether any of the injured men were travelling in the lorry before the accident. Spain says they will not reopen Castor gas storage site after quakes Spain will not reopen the Castor underwater gas storage facility which was shut in 2014 following minor earthquakes in the area, after a study showed tremors could return if it resumed operations, the government said on Wednesday. Meant to store almost a third of Spain's daily gas consumption, Castor stopped gas injections after more than 200 minor earthquakes were detected in 2013.A study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University commissioned in October 2015 aimed to detect the origin of the quakes and their connection with the facility.‘ The localisation of the tremors coincides with the Amposta fault line and the studies conclude that these faults were put under stress as a result of the gas injections,’ the energy ministry said in a statement. Castor was designed to store 1.3 billion cubic metres of gas and pump it in to the national grid when needed.The consortium which built the plant, including Spanish builder ACS and Canada's Dundee Energy, was paid €1.35 billion in 2014 in compensation for not being able to operate the site.

Children living in Spain at risk from climate change by Andy Mansell The United Nations children’s division, UNICEF has handed out a stark warning to the Spanish government regarding the future effects of climate change on the nation’s younger generation.“Spain's nine million children will inherit an uninhabitable country if action is not taken quickly,” is UNICEF's dramatic warning to ministers.A report issued last week has urged Spain to take emergency measures to protect its young from the effects of climate change, warning that the western Mediterranean country is one of Europe's most at-risk nations because of its being such a dry terrain.Spain has one of the most diverse climates in Europe owing to it’s size and vast temperature differences between north and South. Whilst the Northern provinces are lush, with rivers, forests and abundant Winter rainfall, much of the South could be classed as desert, which becomes an ever growing problem owing to continuing deforestation.The ongoing Southern drought coupled with the habitual intense summer heat is expected to be exacerbated over the coming decades by global warming. Even periods of heavy prolonged rain such as the week long storms parts of Southern Spain have experienced over the last few months, including the worst Winter weater for 85 years in Murcia, do not ease the situation.Reservoirs are still well below capacity and when rain does fall it is often too heavy, causing devastation itself as it runs on top of the parched ground instead of penetrating the surface, flooding towns, villages and causing problems for whole
communities.The Spanish UNICEF Committee's managing director Javier Martos and childhood policies leader Maite Pacheco presented the organisation's report, ‘The impact of climate change on childhood in Spain’, warning that global warming is 'a growing and unprecedented threat' for youngsters. It has called for the nation's youngest residents to be the central priority in the Spanish government's future Climate Change Law.Spain is the most vulnerable country in Europe to global warming, and if the international community does not make real efforts in reducing emissions in the next few
years, temperatures will rise by up to 5ºC by the middle of the 21st century,” Sra Pacheco and Sr Martos said. “If this happens, 80% of mainland Spain and Portugal will be desert.“The effects of global warming will transform the economy and physionomy of the country, leaving the population open to more freezing cold snaps and heatwaves, extreme temperatures – hot and cold – rising sea levels, lack of drinking water and greater air pollution.”“We really need to think about what kind of country we're leaving, and want to leave, to our children,” Pacheco concludes.

Lettuce eat english salad this spring British grown courgettes are back on the shelves of UK supermarkets to end the 'Spanish Courgette Crisis'
by Andy Mansell The Spanish rain induced ‘Vegetable Crisis’ is officially over for UK consumers, with the first English grown iceberg lettuce’s and other salad items appearing on the shelves of the nation’s supermarket shelves last week. UK shoppers faced shortages of courgettes in January when a cold and very wet snap hit the Spanish growing regions, causing a severe dip in supplies at a time of peak demand from consumers keen to pursue their new year resolutions to eat more greens. The supermarket shelves emptied and were not refilled and vegetable prices shot through the roof, making the news headlines and front pages of the British papers. Other produce, including aubergines, celery, green beans, lettuces and tomatoes were also affected, and as prices rocketed some supermarkets were forced to impose rationing to even out supply. “This winter, the rains in Spain were quite a pain, as they caused floods that destroyed many of the crops,” said Georgina Reid, Tesco’s buying manager for chilled salads. “Now that our British suppliers are ready to send us their lettuces we will be able to reduce the price for customers as we lessen our reliance on the
Spanish supply.”Spanish-grown courgettes are still on supermarket shelves but will gradually be replaced by British ones towards the end of the month, followed by homegrown celery. The UK salad season usually kicks off in mid-May but, thanks to a mild winter and recent warm weather across the country, crops are being harvested earlier than usual. Shoppers can look forward to an early bounty of UK-grown salad leaves and radishes in addition to English-grown asparagus and Jersey royal potatoes. Early British tomatoes and cucumbers already in store are supplemented with varieties from the continent, particularly Spain and the Netherlands. One supermarket giant has gone one step further to ensuring the situation will not occur in the futureWaitrose has committed itself to growing British salad leaves all year round as part of its support for UK farming and to reduce dependence upon imports. Its new greenhouse growing system – which it says is a UK first and has been in development since 2014 – allowed it to start selling a UK-grown salad bag in February, three months earlier than the usual MayOctober season, meaning in future years a wet Spanish winter will not upset their salad deprived customers.
N.Y. zoo names giraffe calf Tajiri for 'hope' but means 'rich' Tajiri was picked as the winner of a naming contest for a baby giraffe whose long anticipated birth, hooves first, was watched online last month by millions tuning into his mother April's pen at Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, New York. Zoo owner Jordan Patch, announcing the name on ABC's ‘Good Morning America’ on Monday, said the Swahili word was chosen for its forward-looking meaning when translated into English.‘Tajiri is a word in Swahili that means hope,’ Patch said, as he fed carrots to April while Tajiri looked on. But it seems no one in Harpursville had a dictionary of East Africa's Kiswahili language handy, as the translation of Tajiri is ‘rich’ or ‘wealthy. ’Hope is usually translated as ‘tarajio’ or ‘matumaini.’ April raised a ‘significant amount’ of money from viewers worldwide who were mesmerised by her 16month pregnancy, Patch said. Known as Britain's official etiquette expert, both in the UK and around the world, he is the personal Aide to HRH Princess Katarina, who is first Cousin to HRH Prince William, The Duke of Cambridge. Grant Harrold has featured on many programmes during the past 18 years as a commentator, broadcaster and presenter for both TV and Radio. Based in Gloucestershire, Grant runs an etiquette and household consultancy company, Nicholas Veitch Limited.He also gives talks and demonstrations on afternoon tea etiquette, dinner party etiquette and similar etiquette based events.He appeared regularly as the butler on the reality television programme Country House at Woburn Abbey between 2000 and 2003 whilst working for Robin Russell, 14th Duke of Bedford and his son Andrew Russell, 15th Duke of Bedford. In 2012, he featured in the BBC Three series Be Your Own Boss. And in 2013 Grant featured with Ruth Watson in Ruth Watson Means Business, in which he helped Watson improve Fawsley Hall in Northampton. A dedicated multi-national team of volunteers not only rescue, rehabilitate and rehome animals themselves, they also provide help and assistance to other animal rescue organizations and via their collaborating veterinary clinics will underwrite important veterinary treatment to animals rescued by members of the public. Pets In Spain is continually looking for donations to expand their animal rescue and welfare campaigns. Their biggest expense is Vets bills and resources are constantly depleting. They have foster homes and other volunteer staffed places help more abandoned animals.Donations are used to pay for veterinary fees, medication, food, transport costs and the occasional stay in temporary accommodation. ‘The Big One 2017’ Largest collection of classic Jaguars ever in Spain. by Tahnee Wright After 18 months of planning, ‘The Big One 2017’ took place across Saturday April 22 and Sunday April 23 in Parador de Leon, Northern Spain. A joint event between The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club, Spain, The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club, South of France, plus some very enthusiastic members from the JEC in the UK, the result was 97 classic Jaguars, (100 prior to three breakdowns) cleaned and polished to ‘within an inch of their lives’ with 201 very enthusiastic owners congregating at the Parador de Leon Hotel. The main event took place across the Saturday and Sunday, however many of the participants took two to three days or more to travel to and from their homes to the event. Cars and owners came from all over Spain, France and the UK and on the way up, many members from The Costa Blanca region stopped off at Segovia - World Heritage City, for a spot of sightseeing. Members from the UK came from as far as Plymouth, Lancashire and North Wales – those opting for the scenic routes covering approximately 3,500 miles over many days. Having received prior special permission from Leon Town Hall, the outstanding collection of cars parked on St. Marco’s Square in front of the hotel and as expected, attracted much attention. On the Saturday evening, members gathered for predinner drinks in The Cloisters to the sounds of classic guitar before proceeding to one of the medieval halls and enjoying a masked ball with three-course dinner and wine. As the Grand Draw was announced, winners took home cash prizes, starting at €500 for the first prize. A prize was also awarded for the best mask, won by Andrew Honour in his classic venetian mask.
Each table was issued with an envelope for a charity donation, raising in total €2,214 which will be donated to Cancer Research UK. After the final announcements, members enjoyed much music and dancing into the early hours. After a leisurely start on Sunday, members were delighted to meet with the Mayor of Leon at 11.00am before starting their engines at 11.30am and snaking through the city, out into the Spanish countryside and pulling up in Villafranca where a 21-course cocktail lunch was savoured. MABS looking for an area coordinator by Andy Mansell MABS Cancer Support Charity are looking to recruit a volunteer in or around the Mazarron area for a strategically important role within their organization.This is a volunteer position and therefore carries no remuneration other than travel expenses. The position would suit a retired individual with experience of managing people and an understanding of the nature and impact of cancer on people’s lives.Ideally, the Area Coordinator will live within reasonable travel distance from Mazarron.MABS Cancer Support Group was founded in 1999 and has expanded since then to include the Valencia and Murcia regions. It is a charity that provides practical, physical and literal assistance as well as care, comfort and counselling to cancer sufferers of any nationality regardless of their circumstances. The suitable candidate for the post of Area Coordinator for our Mazarron district operations will be responsible for a MABS Support Centre building in Camposol, a Charity Shop in Totana and a local collection point in Puerto de Mazarron. Reporting to the Regional Director, the Area Coordinator will be responsible
for day to day operations in the MABS Support Centre and MABS Charity Shop as well our Fundraising team and our Care Operations team which includes transport for registered patients, interpretation and translation assistance for patients, care assessments and coordination, patient liaison and counselling and equipment logistics. Local barbershop singers win Spanish gold A group of singers from Pilar de Horadada gave a Gold medal winning performance at a recent Barbershop Singing competition on the Costa Del Sol. by Andy Mansell The Pilarmonics were up against groups from all over Spain, but finished first in the Chorus category at the Spanish Association of Babershop Singers annual convention in Benalmadena. The fourteen girls making up the Pilarmonics were considered to be the ‘New Kids On The Block’ and faced other choruses from throughout the country. On the day of the competition, after an early pep talk, they were in full stage outfits and make up ready for their performance by 09.00h and when their time came they gave it everything they to the judges and audience. The many rigourous months of rehearsals and practice had certainly paid off, when the group, led by Musical Director, Dawn Ritch, were awarded Gold medal. In addition, they were also awarded trophies for achieving the Highest scores from judges in both the Music and Singing categories. Unable to contain her excitement, Dawn, from Cabo Roig, said: “This is beyond our wildest dreams. We are a brand new chorus and this was our very first competition so we had no idea what kind of scores we would be able to achieve. We all worked very hard in preparation for the competition and are thrilled to be the new National Champions.” Pilarmonics founder, Phil Molloy who lives in Pilar de la Horadada, said “We are a great team with a terrific musical director and I am so very proud of all of our ladies who worked in harmony and friendship and together achieved the joint highest score awarded to date in the Spanish National

Bar UK in Torre de la Horradada played host to the ‘Bike for Life’ fundraiser on April 15. The family 10km bike ride, in its seventh year, was sponsored by Family Bike Hire.Com, Image Plus and Fishing Costa Blanca and raised over €1200 through sponsorship, bike hire and donations, split between Maria and the Pink Ladies and Panthers and Help Vega Baja. Another €163 was collected for Maria and the Pink Ladies and Panthers on the day, bringing the total to an impressive €763. Maria and the Pink Ladies and Panthers extend their greatest thanks to all involved in the hugely successful event. In other news, Peacocks Petanca Club raised and generously donated €450 to Maria and the Pink Ladies and Panthers. The money was presented to the charity by Peacocks Petanca Secretary Irene Tolson and Treasurer June Sutton. Timeless Fashions also hosted a fashion show on the April 27. The grim, wet weather did nothing to deter the staff and models, who did a fantastic job. Maria and the Pink Ladies and Panthers thank Simon Morton of Sunshine FM, Dan Davy and Sinead Hansard who battled on through the elements to entertain the crowd and raised the magnificent sum of €600.
The sessions begin around 6.45pm and run through to around 9.15pm when the girls normally visit a local hostelry for a well-deserved drink to lubricate their vocal chords. Catwalk girls raise 1500€ for local cancer charity by Andy Mansell Twelve glamourous volunteers modelled a total of 48 different outfits at the MABS Mar Menor Spring Fashion Show at Las Claras in Los Alcazares last week, raising a total of 1500€ for the charity in the process.On a beautiful, sunny afternoon, the very popular event attracted an audience of 114 women and one lucky man, to watch the dozen models strut their stuff on the catwalk. The ladies showcased some wonderful outfits which were all donations to the MABS charity shop. Many of the clothes were new or nearly new, with some fabulous designer labels amongst them. Better still, they were all available for purchase at the end of the show.However the bargain hunters in the audience didn’t have to wait until the end of the afternoon to spend on a summer wardrobe as there were racks full of lovely fashionable items available to purchase when the doors opened. The MABS volunteers were only too happy to assist their customers and were always on hand to point out accessories, shoes, bags and jewellery, to compliment their outfits. By the time the fashion show started, there was hardly a table in the room without carrier bags full of purchases on top of it. Looking fabulous herself, presenter and ex-Tiller Girl, Ziggi opened the show to rapturous applause, as the wonderful models took to the stage to show off the variety of clothing. Each of the volunteer ladies, modelled four outfits, having to run upstairs to the end of a long corridor at every changeover. This great emphasis and pressure on the volunteer dressers, who worked hard backstage to keep the changes running smoothly, ensuring there were no long gaps between outfits on the catwalk.

€6,000 donated to local Torrevieja and Vinalopo associations The hospitals of Torrevieja and Vinalopo have donated €6,000 - received by the Foundation Ad Qualitatem – to local associations in the respective areas. Among the local associations to receive part of the donation is the ALPE centre of Torrevieja, and occupational facility and special education school devoted to the rehabilitation of the handicapped. The presentation ceremony was held alongside the 1st Conference of Quality in the health sector held in the University Hospital of Torrevieja, where experts from various regions across Spain shared knowledge and experience about the importance of quality in health centres and the development of specific programmes that improve patient care.

Seriously, just what illegal substances are government officials and tabloid editors on? Like the other 220 nations Russia doesn’t threaten the UK or its interests. However, this much provoked state has the means and the will to turn the UK into a glass-strewn parking lot if it feels threatened. Russian parliamentarian Frants Klintsevich doesn’t mince his words. “Britain’s threat deserves a tough answer.” The First Deputy of the Russian Defence Committee adds: “Russian cannot conquer Europe or the US through invasion or occupation. It is absolutely evident and thus pointless (to do so). It is high time to remind (London) of the vulnerability of its territory, which could be literally wiped off the face of the earth.” Russia is perfectly entitled to react to British Defence Secretary Michael Fallon threatens to use nuclear weapons pre-emptively. This privately educated idiot never held a proper job, ran a business and never wore anything but a school uniform. Yet, without feeling it necessary to give reason or consult the people, he absurdly threatens the annihilation of the world’s second most powerful nuclear-armed superpower. Britain’s infamous ‘if it bleeds it leads’ red top tabloids took up the cry. The Daily Mail, ‘So how do you like it, Vlad?’ This newspaper had earlier confused Latvia on the Baltic Sea with landlocked Mordovia 1,500km distant. Déjà vu: British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain on August 16, 1939: “History will judge the Press generally to have been the principle cause of war.” Alexander Khrolenko takes a more positive view. The international affairs analyst says the main purpose of
war rhetoric is to drive up arms sales. Sardonically, he alludes to taxpaying Britons paying for war with their incinerated ashes or their tax obligations. Until they are elected British MPs are a run o’ the mill lot who aren’t particularly wealthy. However, after their being elected, 78% of MPs are millionaires. Why? Because MPs and the Lords pass legislation that favour corporate interests. Then, having made trading conditions favourable they invest in corporations including
the taxpayer subsidised armaments industries. Senators who voted to attack Syria received 83 per cent more campaign money from military contractors than lawmakers voting no. The West’s legislators and corporate media should have their investments carefully scrutinised. I would put money on it that their slime trail leads straight to their stockbroker’s office. The fact is, every time we vote for politicians we vote for war.

An anniversary that went virtually unnoticed his week was May 1st 1769, the birth of Arthur Wellesley Duke of Wellington. Born in Dublin to aristocratic British parents, his first love as a boy was music. But his widowed mother anxious for her son not to be labelled a wuss, insisted he join the army where he was commissioned as a major, serving as the aide-de-camp to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. A bloke about as popular with the Irish as St George at a dragon convention. At age 26 he became Lieutenant Colonel in the 33rd Infantry Regiment of Foot, a rank he purchased with a loan from his brother, and was first bloodied in the disastrous Flanders campaign. In spite of this failed attempt to put paid to the First French Republic, Wellesley acquired a taste for war and obviously thought to himself: “I’ll have some more of that”. After returning home he soon left again for India where he covered himself in glory, not to mention curry sauce, and was awarded a knighthood for his efforts along with a promotion to the rank of Major General. In fact he was the very model of a modern major general. A year after returning to England, he became the M.P. for Rye, and shortly after was appointed Chief Secretary of Ireland. But he continued with his military career despite his parliamentary duties and took part in campaigns in the Peninsular War where he was made army commander and promoted to Field Marshall. But Waterloo is the one name above all others that is synonymous with Wellesley, who had by this time been granted a Dukedom. The Prussians under the command of General Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher - a name that if mispronounced sounds like someone trying to cough up a fish bone – played a decisive role in the battle, and along with other coalition forces under the command of Wellington, they finally defeated Napoleon’s army on the evening of Sunday 18th June 1815.If anything, Wellington is perhaps under appreciated. Apart from Waterloo and his status as Commander-in-Chief of the British army – a position he held up until his death – he also became Prime Minister twice and later a leading figure in the House of Lords.He is still regarded as one of the finest military tacticians of all time and is truly one of the greats of British history. Happy birthday Arthur.
Are Spaniards more honest than Brits? As the US commemorated ‘National Honesty Day’ last week, language exchange app Tandem polled its members across Europe, Russia and China to compare the differences in honesty around the globe. Likely to be dishonest to their family were Chinese respondents (38 per cent) while Russians (32 per cent) found it hardest to be honest during school and university and Brits most commonly lie to their colleagues at work (26 per cent). Nearly half of those Italian respondents (45 per cent) would go so far as to lie about their health to avoid work, as well as over a third of Russians (34 per cent) and Germans (31 per cent). However, when asked to name the most dishonest of seven top professions including estate agents, lawyers, politicians and journalists, a more unanimous result was declared across the world. Over half (58 per cent) of all respondents voted politicians the most dishonest; in Spain (86 per cent), Italy (71 per cent), UK (69 per cent), Russia (55 per cent), France (54 per cent) and Germany (53 per cent). From nation to nation, the most dishonest respondents resided in the UK (62 per cent), China (62 per cent) and Russia (61 per cent), followed by France (59 per cent) and Germany (55 per cent) who each admitted to telling a few regular lies. Spain however was found to be the most trustworthy, with over three quarters (78 per cent) declaring they were very honest, followed by over half of Italian respondents (55 per cent).Respondents also admitted that it wasn't just zdults that they lie to, with Brits (70 per cent) and Russians (69 per cent) tending to favour the little white lies and tales of fairies and superheroes told to children, while scare tactics of ghosts and monsters prove most effective with children in China (76 per cent) and France (68 per cent).

Colours I thought we could start back with a subject that wasn´t too taxing, although I did struggle a little to think of something that I haven’t written about before. I mean, I have written in the region of 300 articles about the Spanish language, and sometimes I accidentally write the same one twice. Anyway, inspiration came to me earlier on in the shower – I’ve never written about colours! I presume you know the basic ones – “rojo”, “azul”, “amarillo”, “verde”. Some people are surprised by the word for brown – “marrón” as they assume it means “maroon”. “Marrón” is also used colloquially to mean “a mess” or “a pain” (the mental association, for me any way, is “a heap of ..” something). “Blanco” obviously means “white” but it also means “blank”. “Tener la mente en blanco” means to have a blank mind, or “to go blank”. Next time this happens when you’re speaking Spanish, maybe you could remember to say “tengo la mente en blanco” – except that then it would be true – never mind! In English we say “black and white” but the Spanish put the words in the opposite order “blanco y
negro”, abbreviated to B/N when discussing photos and adverts. In between those two we have “gris” which has a pronunciation closer to the English word “grease” that the first half of the word “gristle”. Orange is the same word as the fruit “naranja” and pink is the same word as the flower “rosa”. Both of these colours, along with “crema” end in the letter “a”. Remember that colours are adjectives and as such change their endings to agree with the nouns they describe. This means that those which end in “o” change four times – “libro negro, silla negra, libros negros, sillas negras”. Those that don’t end in “o” can only change twice – “libro verde, silla verde, libros verdes, sillas verdes”. Also, remember that if the adjective ends in a consonant (e.g. azul) we add “es” to make the plural, as in “ojos azules”. Anyway, going back to “rosa”, “naranja” and “crema” these also only change twice – that is, they retain the “a” ending for both masculine and feminine singular
“vestido rosa” “papel naranja” but add the “s” as usual for plurals. The word for purple varies according to shade. “Morado” is dark purple and there is also “violeta”, “lila” and “malva”. Amongst the reds is a popular colour called “granate”. We actually don’t have a common single word in English to describe this colour but I think the closest equivalents are “burgundy” or “claret”. I find that when I get students to describe their furnishings they very quickly find the need for the word “beige”. Interestingly the Spanish have had to import this word and until recently have retained the spelling “beige”. They have now officially changed the spelling to “beis” so it is pronounced similarly to the English word “base”. Here’s one more thing about colours – how do we say “-ish”? Diamonds are forever Know your diamonds: The Certificate of Authenticity Whenever you are purchasing a piece of diamond jewellery or indeed loose diamonds, you should be issued with a diamond Certificate of Authenticity (COA). This certificate, also known as a 'diamond grading report', assures the buyer with verification of the quality of the stone. You could say that the certificate resembles a passport. Let's explore this further... You may ask the question who issues these certificates? The Certificate of Authenticity is issued by leading independent experts and the most recognised laboratories are the HRD of Antwerp, the GIA of New-York and the IGI of Antwerp. These organisations conform to global standards so it does not matter where you buy your diamonds, the ruling and validity for certification will be the same. What does the certificate state? The certificate will feature the 8 criteria that establishes the quality of a diamond and these are: Carat (Weight) Clarity
Colour Shape Proportions Symmetry Finish Fluorescence What is also important to know? Diamonds are issued with a unique inscription that corresponds with athe Certificate of Authenticity. The inscription is made by using a very fine laser onto the girdle of the diamond which can only be seen using a gemological microscope. In general, certification is supplied for diamonds of at least 0.50 carat in size and it is worth adding that the certificate does not contain any details for the value of the diamond. This must be done independently. To avoid difficulty should you wish to resell or insure your diamonds, note that Certificate of Authenticity issued directly from a jeweller will not be recognised in the industry mainly because the jeweller is not considered to
be an impartial assessor. Its provenance must come from such institutes and laboratories we have recommended above.

Trust is what makes a success of digital workplaces Trusting employees by giving them autonomy is the key to making a success of the digital workplace, according to research conducted by Nick van der Meulen of Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) and MIT’s Center for Information Systems Research (CISR). In an era where digital workplaces are quickly becoming the norm, the study found that organisations that invest most into these digital workplaces – in employee connectedness and responsive leadership – performed above their direct competitors in their respective industries. This was assessed on a basis of five indicators, including growth in market share, profit growth and employee satisfaction. The survey of 313 organisations showed that the high-performing organisations have an integrated and company-wide approach to greater employee connectedness. They achieve this by designing physical spaces, digital technologies and social networks specifically focused on enabling more collaborative work. ‘Connectivity built across silos rather than in an isolated fashion is critical to empowering employees to provide seamless customer experiences,’ van der Meulen explains. In other words, a physical and digital work environment
designed for a collaborative, integrated employee experience enables the delivery of more complex customer solutions.In terms of leadership style, high performers adopt a facilitative approach in which managers trust their employees to decide when, where, and how best to work. Management typically encourages employees to share mistakes and failures, but is also interested in their innovative ideas. Staff are allowed to be flexible, while enabling the entire organisation to learn, innovate and remain competitive. In addition, these leaders articulate a vision that links workplace design to the organisation’s strategic objectives. They encourage experimentation with new approaches to work, have a high tolerance for failure of new workplace initiatives and provide continuous learning opportunities. These companies also tend to have cross-functional digital workplace leadership teams. The research emphasised that responsive leadership - which is critical in getting full value from the digital workspace - requires a shift in mind-set. Leaders in highperforming companies facilitate workplace design rather than direct it. ‘The end result is that they empower employees to make decisions in the best interest of customer experience and their work,’ Nick van der Meulen added.

When the parties involved cannot decide or agree on the applicable law, the following divorce regulations apply (as set out in Article 5 of the European Regulation EU No. 1259/2010) subject to the law of the State: a) Where the spouses have their usual residence at the time of the lodging the lawsuit b) Where the spouses had their last usual residence, provided that the period of residence did not end more than one year before the filing of the complaint, and that one of them still resides there at the time of lodging the lawsuit or, failing that; c) The nationality of both spouses at the time of the filing of the complaint or, failing that, d) Before the Courts where the application was made. According to the European Commission, there are about 16 million international couples in the EU, whose members come from different Member States or living in an EU country of which neither is a national. The Eurovision Song Contest 2017 will be the 62nd edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. It will take place in the International Exhibition Centre in Kiev, Ukraine, following Ukraine's victory at the 2016 contest in Stockholm with the song "1944", written and performed by Jamala. This will be the second time the contest takes place in Kiev, after 2005. The contest is expected to consist of two semi-finals on 9 and 11 May and the final on 13 May 2017. Celebrated TV comic Graham Norton will host the event in the UK. He has been the UK’s ESC commentator since 2009 and become increasingly popular since Terry Wogan retired from the gig. Forty-two countries will participate in the 2017 contest. Portugal and Romania are to return to the contest, both having been absent from the 2016 edition. After returning in 2016, Bosnia and Herzegovina has withdrawn again due to financial difficulties. Russia announced their withdrawal on 13 April 2017, after their singer, Yulia Samoylova, was banned from entering Ukraine after the government said she had illegally travelled directly to Crimea from Russia, a region that was annexed by Russia in 2014, to give a performance. A bit about him. Graham William Walker, better known by his stage name Graham Norton, is a famous Irish comedian, actor, commentator, TV presenter and writer-columnist. In 1998 he established a production company “So Television” with Graham Stuart. This company still produces Norton’s chat shows, such as the famous “So Graham Norton” and “The Graham Norton Show”. When Norton decided to sell this company in 2012, he received about $28 million! He also earns millions of dollars thanks to his acting and writings; today Norton’s income reaches well over $5 million per year!

The Real Mystery of Jack the Ripper. The Untold Investigation. by Darren Mark Wright
This is a plausible account by Wright using his research from casebook.org and I am assured that every fact of the case is actual fact and that these facts can be traced to their source. The investigators are a creation of the author and the conclusion made by Lieutenant Davis who has "weird, unique and imaginative ways of recreating crime scenes." Essential for interesting storytelling. His techniques are theatrical, using improvisations and revisiting scenes like a time traveller. The murder victims are included adding to the story-telling and characterisation. Multiple narration is a device used well by Wright as he seamlessly moves from 1888 to 1900 or 1905, from Whitechapel, London to South Africa during the Boer war. The story moves backwards and forwards constantly with lots of overlap and repetition. There is a purpose to this. As the investigation develops Davis uncovers more facts which develop into theories of who was responsible for committing these gruesome murders. What is satisfying is that when you finally reach the end and it is a long haul, so be warned, Wright presents you with the murderer(s) and the evidence. Lieutenant Christian Davis tells the story to a company of soldiers in the South African Republic before fighting commenced, twelve years after Jack the Ripper committed his murder spree. It was believed that an "intriguing, unsolved murder story" would distract them from the "throngs of the Great Boer War." After the war, Captain Arthur Phillip Hughes sat with a psychologist, Doctor Schultz who wanted to know about the Ripper killings. This was in 1902. war although the doctor believes it has more to do with the Ripper investigation. He retells the story explaining why the Ripper was never caught. We move into 1905 where a Doctor Brown is a tour guide taking tourists around the sites of the murders and other related locations giving his expertise to the Whitechapel murders, accompanied by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The main narrative details the murders committed during the 1888s in the East End of London. Fatty arbuckle is back in town A San Fulgencio theatre group will be taking a step back in time next month, making a return to the golden age of silent movies, when the Keystone Cops and Fatty Arbuckle were the names on every picture house’s posters. Studio 32’s summer production ,’Mack and Mabel’ is set in the era of silent movies, from 1911 to 1938, and contains a fine mix of solo and company songs. Add to that some hilarious slapstick comedy with Mack Sennett’s most famous silent movie creation – the Keystone Kops – and you know you’ll be in for a great night’s entertainment.Fatty Arbuckle was a real character, who mentored Charlie Chaplin and discovered Buster Keaton and Bob Hope. He loved comedy, and was particularly famous for his love of the “pie in the face” comedy routine with leading lady Mabel Normand. His popularity was such that he became the highest paid actor of his time in Hollywood.The most recognisable song from the wonderful score, with words and music by Jerry Herman is ‘I won’t send roses’. The leading role of Fatty Arbuckle is being played Mervyn William. Before moving to Spain in 2000 Mervyn had never been on stage. Then last year, having done a few small shows, Mervyn wanted to take the challenge of full-scale musical theatre and so joined Studio32. His first role with the company was Mr Fezziwig in their winter production “A Christmas Carol”. Enjoying the comedic aspect of the character Mervyn successfully auditioned for the role of Fatty, and
is thoroughly enjoying the challenge of singing, dancing and acting this great comedy character. Torrevieja hospital launches cancer rehabilitation programme Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja has launched an integrated programme within its multidisciplinary oncology platform in an effort to reassure cancer sufferers that rehabilitation can improve their quality of life after diagnosis and prevent possible future disabilities. Backed by a team of 30 top specialists, the Hospital now receives patients from throughout Spain, Europe and beyond for its ground breaking rehabilitation programmes. The treatments of cancer produces physical, emotional and psychic changes interfering with the daily life of the patient and their relatives, presenting some complications such as: acute or chronic pain, fatigue, mobility deficit, lymphedema, edema, sleep disturbances, Vesico-sphincter dysfunctions, cardiorespiratory alterations, neuropathies, muscular weakness, depression or cognitive deterioration, among others. Oncological rehabilitation is highly recommended in any cancer treatment process, since it can reduce the disability resulting from the unwanted effects of the healing process. There is solid scientific evidence that supports its implementation in its different forms of intervention (preventive, restorative, supportive, palliative) provided there is no clear clinical contraindication. Finally, Dr. Fernández emphasizes that "it is important to emphasize in the oncologic rehabilitation the flexibility during the treatments because the clinical situation of each patient changes day by day. Although working together we can achieve functional independence and a quicker reincorporation back into normal life. Most importantly, always shave with the growth of the hair, never against. CLEANSE – After exfoliation, it is important to deep cleanse with a face wash containing tea tree oil and witch hazel, with their anti-septic, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory ingredients. This helps to calm any redness and irritation post shaving. Finish by rinsing the skin with cold water to close the pores. TONE - Men have more active sebaceous glands than women, meaning we often have better nourished skin than women. However the natural oils produced can also block pores. A toning product is key to reducing the levels of oil on the skin. Key ingredients to look out for are Kaolin Clay and Witch Hazel which are both great for removing excess oil. How to grow Alcochofas (Globe Artichokes') Here in Spain, there is not just one globe artichoke variety or even two; there are many. Of course, there are many: there’s a variety for every region and a season that extends from early spring to early summer. Here, as in France and Greece, artichokes are often eaten young, tender and raw, sliced into salads. Or when they are the size of a walnut, they are briefly fried in olive oil. Then a little water goes in and they cook until just tender. These can be marinated, used in pasta sauces or enjoyed whole. When artichokes are picked young, the stems are not hard or pithy and it’s possible to snap rather than cut them off the plant.Even the stems can be eaten by peeling off the stringy outsides and eating the soft, crisp insides with salt, like you might celery. It’s bitter and nutty. You’ll love it or people will think you're mad. I hear a lot from people with rotting clumps. These are getting too wet over the winter and rotting off; they may also be too shaded. My plants are grown on heavy clay, but in full sun. On wetter ground they need to be sheltered from the worst of the winter weather and on a slightly raised bed to aid drainage. I mulch them now to give them a boost of nutrients, lock in moisture and keep weeds down.Sow globe artichoke seeds

Or buy young plants from garden centres, which can go out from mid-May onwards.Rare, heritage varieties tend to be easiest to source as seed; 'Romanesco' and 'Violetta Chioggia' from Chiltern Seeds are two fine purpleheaded varieties. Artichokes need moisture over the summer. If the roots are deep, they will often find their own, but young plants will need watering in. Artichokes do best in deep, rich fertile soil that is well-drained in a sunny position. A healthy plant will have a root system 90-120cm deep. Perennial crops are grown for five to 10 years, though they can last much longer. Commercially the plants are divided every four to five years to keep up vigour. Some growers do something called stumping to their crops: cutting back hard to force the plant to produce a new flush of offshoots.If done towards the end of August and provided you can keep the plants frost-free (either covering with fleece or low cloches) over the winter, you’ll get a much earlier crop the following year. It’s also a great method to get new offshoots from an old plant without having to divide the whole thing.

Small garden? Plant vertically In a small garden, all your ways are on show. There are often no hidden bits, particularly in a terrace garden; if not from ground level, then from upstairs, where you are definitely confronted with your lot. This can be delightful and frustrating all at once.It’s hard to hide the ugly bits in a small space: the lopsided shed, the old barbecue and the weed buckets. One solution is to have aesthetically pleasing barbecues and buckets, and to recycle plastic pots and old labels. Another is to distract.Who cares if your kitchen is a bit of a mess if you create a fantastic meal? All is forgiven and forgotten as you fight over the leftovers. The garden is no different. You need to lift the eye away from the offending object; no one is drawn to a barbecue if there’s something better to look at.The best thing to do is, come to think of this as the spires and saucers trick. Spires – tall, elegant flower spikes – lift the eye upwards, connecting the earth with the sky. If planted in pleasing clumps and loose drifts with the right rhythm, they introduce a clean line, a little clarity into the planting around them. Foxgloves (digitalis), dark pink Verbena Hastata, pale pink culver’s root (Veronicastrum Verinicum var incarnartum) white willowherb,Chamaenerion angustifolium 'Album' (which, be warned, self-seeds everywhere) and white wild indigo ( Baptisia lactae ) will all add elegant upright notes. Bugbane ( Actae simplex Atropurporea Group ), with its tall, gently bending spires of white fading to dusty pink, works well in deep shade, as long as it never dries out. Broad beans, elephant garlic, Babington leeks, and brussels sprouts do a similar thing in a mixed vegetable and flower garden. Once you have your top notes, you need to think about the rhythm section. Fill in the rest with umbels and other flat or saucer-shaped flowers such as orpine (Sedum telephium) , achilleas and perennial phlox (Phlox paniculata). Herb fennel, either the green (Foeniculum vulgare) or bronze-leave (F. 'Giant Bronze') forms, is delightfully relaxed and a little dishevelled in the right way, though fennel works best towards the back of the border, because it’ll get to 2m. Or try the biennia Angelica sylvestris 'Vicar's Mead' with heads of rounded umbels above dramatic dark foliage. You can allow a little selfseeding and use the rest as slightly bitter and perfumed spice.For something delicate that likes shade, lime green perfoliate alexander (Smirnium perfoliatum) flowers in early summer before the foliage. Perennial hairy chervil (Chaerophyllum hirstum 'Roseum' is shamelessly pink and fluffy, evoking countryside hedgerows: growing to 75cm tall, it prefers partial shade and is over by early summer. If you want white flowers, Baltic parsley (Cenolophium denudatum) will do a similar job in partial shade; it likes it a little damp and flowers much later and gets taller – up to 150cm tall. Parsley, chervil, par-cel (looks like parsley, tastes like celery), caraway and sweet cicely are edible choices: eat the leaves, then leave them to flower for the bees. It’s also worth leaving a few carrots, celery and parsnips to stand over winter and flower the next spring, where they may self-sow and certainly will be much admired.

Studio living in style Studio living has become a necessity of modern life. With property prices, particularly in cities, soaring to levels preventing younger people from taking that first step on the property ladder.
Sometimes a tiny studio is the only affordable way to live and work in a city, when people are tired of flatshares and room renting. However, if you think tiny spaces are a headache, think again. There are so many inspirational examples of just how harmonious and stylish the smallest studios can be. With several rooms miraculously compressed into one, every centimetre needs to be cleverly used to its greatest effect. Here, in this newly renovated Manhattan apartment, Russian architect Peter Kostelov, has featured tucked-away furniture and used 'versatility' as his watchword for all the available space.Originally the pint-sized apartment had two bedrooms, a living room, a bathroom and a kitchen, but this layout boxed in each space. Instead Kostelov wanted to make the whole apartment more adaptable: the living room can easily be switched around into a dining room, while a working studio turns into a guest
bedroom in no time at all. A bed slides out into the bedroom, while a table and two benches on wheels draw out to just over two metres in length into the living room. The narrow kitchen faces a brick wall across a tiled corridor, where wooden shelves fold out to form a breakfast table or extra counter space. Kostelov also paid attention to providing brighter living spaces, quieter sleeping areas away from the street, more ventilation in the living room by the large windows. Living in small quarters doesn't have to mean sacrificing style for drab storage solutions and "it's the only thing that will fit" furniture. It just takes a little creativity. There is no need to paint an entire small apartment bright white; colour can add real drama to small spaces and the addition of a mirror can cleverly mimic a doorway, creating the illusion of grander space. Forget cumbersome wardrobes. Instead go for separate
storage crates (Ikea is a one-stop mecca for storage solutions) and hanging rails, which can be hidden behind a decorative curtain. Studio rooms are often used for everything from dining and entertaining to reading and watching television. A flexible, well-planned lighting scheme can give the impression of extra space and create handy areas for different activities within the room. Well-positioned lights highlight your prized possessions and as you will not have space for many, make sure they are really important to you. Effective lighting can evoke so many different atmospheres depending on what kind of statement you want to make. Remember, these small spaces can be the bane of any studio dweller or owner's life, but they can also be a blessing in design disguise. Awkward, small spaces are often a catalyst for change, forcing you to a) clear the clutter and b) come up with clever design ideas you may never have thought of otherwise.

Kick your map into touch with a new phone app
It’s not easy being a pedestrian, even more so if you’ve moved to a new city, or are unfamiliar with the one you’re staying in. You can’t help feeling like the world wasn’t built for you, it was built for cars, which are bigger and scarier than you and one false move, can leave you within inches of your life. But you’re just trying to find a coffee shop that isn’t terribly crowded or an ATM that won’t charge you 5€ to withdraw your own money. Why should walking around a city be so difficult? Well, the simple truth is, it shouldn’t be and thanks to a new phone APP called Sidekix, it doesn’t have to be. The three entrepreneurs behind the app – Jenny Drezin, a native New Yorker living in Israel who’s admittedly had one too many traveling misadventures; Miron Perel, a graduate of the Technion Institute in Israel with a background in aerospace engineering; and Eli Baram, a computer science graduate of Tel Aviv University – thought that pedestrians were getting lost in the navigation shuffle and wanted to develop an app dedicated specifically to them.

Thus Sidekix was born, a GPS platform that uses interest-based routing – suggesting places and things to do based on the user’s passions – to enhance the experience. Or, according to CEO Perel: “It’s an urban navigation app that offers you a personalized walking experience to get you to your destination in a better, more interesting way.” From fashion, food, culture, art and nightlife to simply finding safer, well-lit routes at night, Sidekix is designed to find routes based on your preferences. You can also add specifications to routes, such as stopping at an ATM and grocery store on the way to a friend’s house. And though it was developed in Israel, Sidekix is now available in more than 100 cities worldwide, including Tel Aviv, New York, London, Rome, Barcelona, Boston and San Francisco, and new cities are added regularly. It’s available for free in the App Store and Google Play.
Facebook and Google duped in $100,000,000 scam In March, it was reported that two major tech companies were tricked by a Lithuanian man into sending him over $100m (€91m). Evaldas Rimasauskas, 48, was charged with wire fraud, money laundering and aggravated identity theft for impersonating Quanta Computer – a Taiwanese electronics manufacturer that includes Google, Facebook and Apple as clients. On 27 April, Fortune reported that the two victims were Facebook and Google. Rimasauskas allegedly deceived the companies from at least 2013 until 2015. ‘Fraudulent phishing emails were sent to employees and agents of the victim companies, which regularly conducted multimillion-dollar transactions with [the Asian] company,’ the US Department of Justice (DOJ) said in a statement. Facebook said in a statement: ‘We recovered the bulk of the funds shortly after the incident and have been cooperating with law enforcement in its investigation.’ Likewise, Google said it had ‘detected this fraud against our vendor management team and promptly alerted the authorities. We recouped the funds and we’re pleased this matter is resolved.’ The case shows just how big an issue phishing and online fraud has become, with phishing attacks conning people and companies all over the world out of significant sums of money.
Mobile children 18 per cent of children aged between six and eight now own their own mobile phone according to research among 2,000 consumers carried out by Peli. Ownership rises to nearly 20 per cent for children aged between nine and 11 - with over 50 per cent of children over the age of 13 now owning a phone. ‘Parents don’t usually share their mobile devices with kids for speaking to someone,’ says Estefania Fenoy at Peli. ‘Parents loan their smartphones to keep their children occupied. Over 20 per cent of parents in the research said they loaned their phones to their children at restaurants; 18 per cent in a
doctor’s or dentist’s waiting room; and 22 per cent generally when outside the home. Only 29 per cent of respondents said they did not loan their mobile to their children, with the majority passing it out for at least a little while.’ In terms of time, parents allow their children to use their phone for a range of time: time ranges from 49 per cent saying they allow use for one hour a week; 33 per cent up to five hours a week; 10 per cent five to 10 hours a week; 2.5 per cent allow 1015 hours a week; and 4 per cent allow over 15 hours a week.

Fake Ferraris Busted In Spain We’re all used to seeing fake Rolex watches doing the rounds for unbelievable prices and Raybeni sunglasses masquerading as Rayban Aviators, but what about knock off cars? Is it possible to fake a Ferrari? Well, you may be surprised to know, the answer is yes and Spanish Police have the evidence to prove it, having recently busted a gang dealing in rip off versions of the supercar. They have just caught a group of fraudsters for the second time in five years, specialising in turning bog standard passenger cars into Ferrari-badged fakes and selling them to unsuspecting punters. According to Spanish detectives, the gang was caught last month in the process of transforming 14 mid-range motors into highly desirable super sports cars. The gang allegedly planned to sell the cars via the internet. Some had already been listed online as second-hand vehicles even though they were still a work in progress. Police said the investigation into the fake supercars kicked off after it became aware of “a vehicle that simulated the appearance of a sports car of the Ferrari brand infringing
the industrial property rights of the aforementioned brand”. “The agents also located the clandestine workshop ... where they found 14 vehicles in different degree of transformation. Four of them were several Ferrari models already ready for sale,” police said. “The records involved a number of parts, distinctive elements of the marques concerned, fibreglass moulds for body parts of the marques concerned, speedometers and vehicle-related documentation.” One of the items seized was a complete blank for the body of a V8-engined Ferrari F430, a mid-2000s coupe and convertible worth more than $200,000 (£160,200) second-hand. The gang appears to have sourced a number of donor cars to run underneath the fake skins. These range from what looks like a V6engined Ford Mondeo to a Pontiac Fiero and even a mystery Peugeot. The trickery didn’t just relate to fairly recent prestige models, either; at one point the vision cuts across a complete outer-skin cast of a Dino, a car potentially worth $500,000 – if it’s the real deal. Now, next time one of our lovely ‘looky looky’ men offer you a Ferrari for a knock down price ….. Look the other way!

Flying car goes on show in Monaco A Slovakia-based company unveiled the commercial design for a flying car priced at more than â‚Ź1 million in Monaco, saying it was ready for pre-orders with first deliveries expected by 2020.
AeroMobil said its teardrop-like shaped AeroMobil Flying Car, displayed at the Top Marques Monaco, could switch to flight mode in less than three minutes. The wings fold away for driving on roads and swing out for flying. The company, one of several developing such flying vehicles, aims to make up to 500 units of its first commercially available edition, priced at â‚Ź1.2 million to â‚Ź1.5 million To fly, the car would need an airfield or another approved place to take off, while owners would require driving and pilot licenses, AeroMobil Chief Communications Officer Stefan Vadocz said. AeroMobil said deliveries to customers of the flying car, which Vadocz said would comply with air and road regulations, was expected to start by 2020. Before so-called flying cars become mainstream, they must overcome a host of flight safety issues to allay public fears. Governments are already studying how to regulate drones and driverless cars, while the auto and aviation industries are working on advances in software and city planning to ensure the vehicles are restricted to travel within safe corridors.

Real Murcia and FC Cartagena battle for play-offs Another fine away win last weekend keeps Real Murcia hopes of reaching an end of season play-off spot very much alive as they climbed to within three points of FC Cartagena who could only manage a home draw. Two months ago at the beginning of March, the picture was very different as a poor run of form had left Murcia five points adrift of the play-offs in fifth and twelve points behind Cartagena, who were and still are sitting second in the table behind leaders La Hoya of Lorca.Since, losing to S. Fernando on March 5, the Pimentoneros, managed by Vicente Mir, have embarked on a remarkable run of nine games without defeat including a 3-1 win at their Murcian rivals and now sit in the final play-off position with two games to play.By contrast FC Cartagena have only picked up 11 points out of 27 in the same period and now face missing out altogether. Last weekend Real Murcia won away 3-1 at Atletico Sanluqueno, whilst Cartagena could only muster a 2-2 at home to FC Jumilla setting up a nerve jangling end to the season. The top position team, currently occupied by La Hoya, six points ahead of Murcia and three ahead of Cartagena, join the other three group winners and are drawn into a twolegged series where the two winners are promoted to the Segunda División and enter into the final for the Segunda División B championship. The two losing semifinalists enter the playoff round for the last two promotion spots.The four group runners-up are drawn against one of the three fourth-placed teams outside their group while the four third-placed teams are drawn against one another in a two-legged series. What next for Joshua?
Last Saturday's thrilling Wembley victory over Wladimir Klitschko, in front of a post-war British record 90,000 fans, leaves former Olympic champion Anthony Joshua unbeaten in 19 fights as a professional now holder of the WBA and IBF world champion. In stopping the most dominant heavyweight of this century, the question now for Joshua is who will he fight next? The champion’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, has been hitting the phones since Saturday night to make sense of a complicated landscape, but the odds are Joshua will not fight again until October. Matching an event as iconic as last week’s which delivered an expected pay day of 15 million pounds and finding an opponent capable of competing, looks a tall order in the short-term. However this hasn’t stopped the big names lining up to challenge boxing’s latest hero. First to throw his hat into the ring was Tyson Fury, who tweeted a provocative message after the match from his twitter account @tyson_fury, which read: “Well done @anthony fJoshua, good fight, you had life & death with @klitschko & I played with the guy, let’s dance “ Joshua did hit the canvas hard before toppling Klitschko, whereas Fury ducked, weaved and earned a comfortable points win by comparison in 2015. Fury who would understandably be Joshua’s preferred option stoked the fire a little further on Monday by claiming: “I can beat AJ with one arm tied behind my back. I don’t even need a warm-up.” Meanwhile, Anthony Joshua had already tweeted a message to Fury which read, "Fury, where you at baby?"

We’re always being told that it’s never too late to take up a new sport, but very few of us imagine we’d become a gold medal winning athlete once we did. However that didn’t deter Man Kaur, from Chandighar India, who took up sprinting rather late in life, at the age of 93 years young, following encouragement from her son Gurdev Singh, 78.Eight years later, the remarkable athlete has just won her 20th medal at the World masters Games in Auckland New Zealand. The World Masters Games is an international multi-sport event held every four years which, in terms of competitor numbers, has developed into the largest of its kind. Anyone can participate in the games so long as they are over the age of 35 though some sports will allow athletes who are younger than that. Participants compete for themselves – there are no country delegations. Beyond the age requirement and membership in that sport's governing body, there are no competition qualification requirements. The 101-year-old Indian athlete said she feels like a hero after picking up her first gold medal at the New Zealand World Masters Games.Man Kaur won gold, and the heart of the crowd, when she completed the 100m sprint at the 2017 World Masters Games in Auckland on Monday. Ms Kaur is the only contender in the over 100 age grade, so effectively, unless she falls over and fails to finish, the 101 year old is guaranteed a Gold medal every time she takes to the field.But that isn’t the point, as World Masters Games director Dianne McAteer succinctly pointed out, Ms Kaur is "just everything that World Masters Games epitomises"."It's a sport for life, it's being active, it's about not letting age be a barrier to being active so she's amazing." Speaking to the press afterwards the ecstatic winner of 20 medals said, "I'm going to run again, I'm not going to give up. I will participate, there's no full stop." Speaking to the Canadian Press, her son said: "When she wins, she goes back to India, and she's excited to tell others, 'I have won so many medals from this country.' Winning makes her happy." When training at home in Chandigarh, Kaur runs a number of short distances every evening - and she believes other women should follow in her footsteps. "She encourages them, old ladies, that they should run, they should not eat wrong foods, and they should encourage their children also to take part in the Games," said her son.So, the question is, will Man Kaur be back to defend her titles at the next World Masters Games in Kansai Japan in 2021 at the age of 105?
