Beach-goers were astonished to discover the blanket of jellyfish across the beach

The sandy shores of the Arenal beach dawned a luminous violet earlier this week as thousands of ‘Pelagia noctiluca’ jellyfish were washed up along the waterfront. Surfers arriving early to the beach on Monday morning - followed closely by those eager to soak up the beginning of May sun - were astonished to discover the blanket of jellyfish across the beach along with thousands more (alive) in the sea itself. Despite surfers longing to enjoy the last waves of the previous week’s storms, none were all-tookeen to come into close contact with the jellyfish, whose venom can be exceptionally stinging and the sea was rendered a no-bathing zone. The municipal services department dispatched five of its staff to remove the invertebrates, which made for an arduous few hours as they were collected one-by-one with shovels. In Latin, pelagia means ‘of the sea’, nocti stands for night and luca means light; thus, Pelagia noctiluca can be described as a marine organism with the ability to glow in the dark. This species of jellyfish, known in Europe as the mauve stinger amongst many other common names, is widely distributed in all warm and temperate waters of the world's oceans, including the Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea and Atlantic Ocean. It is also found in the Pacific Ocean, with sightings in warm waters off Hawaii, southern California and Mexico, as well as other Pacific locations. Continued on page 3

Emaus children facing eviction in less than two weeks

The Mayors and supporters address the rally

by Andy Mansell Babies, children, vulnerable young adults and elderly people are amongst the residents of the homes run by the Emaus charity, which face closure on May 15. Despite a week of protest rallies and demonstrations from employees, fundraisers, supporters and union officials, the fate of the hundreds of occupants hangs in the balance. The seven homes run by the EMAUS charitable foundation are facing closure owing to a stalemate between the Department of Social Security and a Catalunyan company wishing to take over the running of the charity. Around five hundred protesters held a demonstration outside Altea Town hall last Friday morning in an effort to draw attention to the growing crisis. A subsequent demonstration last Tuesday did not attract as many supporters, but was attended by the officials from several of the town’s where the homes are located, including the mayor’s of Polop, Altea, Rellue, Alfas del Pi and El Vergel amongst others. Some of the Mayors spoke to the crowds along with representatives from the homes and the CCCO trade Union, who all showed support for the residents and staff of the homes.EMAUS was formed in 1979 by Francisco Nadal who returned to Altea from France with a group of homeless teenagers and renovated his family’s old Finca for them to live in. From a small workshop, helping problematic teenage children, it has grown into a large Registered Charitable Organisation with facilities caring for abandoned babies, children

and vulnerable teenagers.In addition they also run a safe house for women and children escaping abusive relationships and homes for elderly and people with disabilities. In recent years the charity ran into severe financial difficulties running up debts that they were unable to pay back. The debt situation worsened until the only option was to declare themselves bankrupt owing around 5 million euros in Social Security payments.This leaves both residents and staff at the homes facing an impossible situation, through lack of funding from charitable donations. Employees of the charity who number in their hundreds have not received wages for the last seven months and more importantly their social security payments have not been met.Should they lose their jobs they will not qualify for payment from the government and will be left penniless. Union representatives were present at the rallies to plea for a solution to help their workers. The residents also face an uncertain future as the majority of them are living at the homes because they have nowhere else to go and are already vulnerable. However, there is a solution to the problem facing the charity and that is the reason the rally was called on Friday. A new non-profit making company from Catalunya is proposing to take over the running of the homes. They have a successful track record within the sector and would safeguard the jobs of staff and future for the vulnerable residents. The potential new owners are unfortunately left with the social security debt and are unwilling to pay it and despite

negotiations with the social security department they are unable to get the 5 million euro debt waived.There is a precedent here, as there are many examples of football clubs and other businesses having social security debts waived when new owners take over, but on this occasion the government department will not budge. Local Charity Director Wayne Bellamy-Wright, whose Busy Bees Charity raises huge amounts for the children and women residents, speaking to RTN, pointed out that: ‘’The government have a legal responsibility to these people’’, who find themselves in this situation through no fault of their own, adding ‘’They are there now because they are already vulnerable, they cannot just throw them out on the streets’’. Jackie Rogers, a British fundraiser who has lived in Spain made a heartfelt plea to the Mayor’s in attendance, shouting in fluent Spanish: “If all of you Mayor’s used the money you waste on fireworks at your town’s fiestas in one year and gave it to the homes, the bills and the employees could be paid and the children would be safe”, she cried. Another group from the Armanello Campsite in Benidorm said that they regularly raised hundreds of euros in fundraising activities to help children in the Rellue home. It appears obvious that goodwill and support for the plight of the unfortunate residents is widespread and across the board and with officials from the charity meeting Government officials in Valencia during the week, a temporary reprieve looks possible, to allow further talks with the potential new owners to take place.

Continued from front page It is typically an offshore species, although it is not rare for thousands to float closer to the coastline and become stranded in vast numbers on beaches, as has happened in Javea. The colour varies worldwide and in addition to pink or mauve, the jellyfish are sometimes shades of golden yellow to tan. In an unprecedented event in November 2007, a 10-square-mile (26 km2) swarm of Pelagia noctiluca wiped out a 100,000-fish salmon farm in Northern Ireland, causing around €1 million worth of damage. Although an inconvenience to those wishing to spend the last day of the bank holiday on the beach, it is hoped that the swarms of Pelagia noctiluca arriving so early in the season might mean that they are less likely to close off the sea for bathers in the height of the summer. The Arenal beach will be closely patrolled by lifeguards this weekend, who will advise against bathing in the sea until it has been declared safe to do so.

€1.3 million to Pedreguer public projects

by Tahnee Wright In its sixth year this year, the Programa Municipal de Pressupostos Participatius (‘Municipal Participatory Budgeting Program’) of Pedreguer has allocated nearly €1.3 million to resident proposed projects since 2012. The pioneering initiative has gained traction year after year, establishing itself as a tool to promote the direct involvement of residents in the municipality in making decisions regarding local public policies. In the past five years, projects proposed by residents include: • The construction of the bridge over the barranc del Marx • The skate track • The planting of more trees • The pista coberta de l’institut • Recovery and restoration of trails • The refurbishment of the play ground near the school

• The climbing wall • The purchase a van to provide transport for disabled residents Other projects, such as the placement of a cover over the placa de l’Amistat, are currently in progress. Last year, more than 600 residents took part in the voting process. Once again, the process is divided into two main phases: First, the public collection of proposals, which ends on May 22. Proposals can be submitted online or in by hand to any of the mailboxes in the municipal buildings. Once the municipal technical services have assessed the proposals, a public assembly will be called to select the proposals that will be subject to public vote and included in the municipal budget for 2016. UK will not pay €100 billion EU exit bill

Britain will not be paying €100 billion to leave the European Union, Brexit minister David Davis said on Wednesday after the Financial Times reported that the EU was preparing to demand that amount. Citing its own analysis of new stricter demands it said were driven by France and Germany, the newspaper said €100 billion was a gross figure. ‘We'll not be paying €100 billion What we've got to do is discuss in detail what the rights and obligations are,’ Davis told British channel ITV. He also said that the British government had not seen a figure from the EU for the exit bill. The FT said that after requests from member states, EU negotiators had revised their initial calAculations to maximise the liabilities Britain would be asked to cover, including post-Brexit farm payments and EU administration fees in 2019 and 2020.

Spain rescues 10 migrants crossing Strait of Gibraltar Spain’s maritime rescue service says it saved 10 migrants from a small inflatable craft trying to cross the Strait of Gibraltar earlier this week. The service said that the 10 men of subSaharan origin were ‘visibly tired after hours of rowing.’ The rescue boat Arcturus made the rescue in waters off the southern tip of Spain. Tens of thousands of migrants, most from sub-Saharan African countries, try to make the perilous crossing in boats unsuitable for the open sea to Spain and Italy each year

British girl dies after fall from Benidorm balcony by Andy Mansell Spanish National police this week confirmed the name of the young British female who fell to her death from the 11th floor of an apartment block in the Rincon de Loix area of Benidorm. Police were called to the Payma Apartments in Calle Almeria, close to the popular Levante Beach area of the city, at 8.00am last Saturday, after the female, who had been partying with friends in their rented apartment fell from the high floor. Kirsty Maxwell, newlywed from Livingston, West Lothian was on a hen-party weekend with a group of friends and had only been in the resort less than 24 hours. A police spokesperson told the Spanish press - immediately after the incident - that they were in the process of interviewing the people present in the apartment at the time of the fall, plus residents in the vicinity who may have witnessed the fall. The police initially confirmed that, as the body showed no signs of having endured fight or struggle, the most probable cause of death was an accidental fall. However, the police later confirmed that the deceased did not fall from the apartment she was sharing with her friends, but had in fact fallen from an apartment shared by a group of men directly above on the 11th floor. Those present were interviewed over the subsequent days, but no arrests were made and police remain unable to ascertain the cause of the fall. One theory being probed is that Kirsty tried to leap 100 feet into the water to escape the group of men. Other theories circulating allege police believe she may have been thrown towards the pool by the group of men in an alcohol-induced prank, or that she had been sleepwalking. Mobile phones belonging to the group of men were examined by police for telltale video clips of Kirsty’s final moments but revealed no clues. Her husband of eight months, Adam and her family flew to Spain to speak to investigators this week. One man, Joseph Graham, 32 was kept in custody for 48 hours, but then released without charge after being investi-

gated on suspicion of homicide. Mr Graham was released on bail and flew back to the UK on Wednesday after spending two nights in a police cell. He remains under investigation. Mr Graham and the group of men, who admitted being under the influence of alcohol and cocaine, following the tragedy at around 8.00am on Saturday. Kirsty had been partying till 4.00am on Saturday and returned to the apartment with her group of friends, but walked out barefoot and entered the apartment directly above later. Mr Graham told police she was acting as if she was ‘mad, drunk or drugged’ and headed for the bathroom before walking onto the balcony. He insisted he and the group of men did nothing wrong, asking her to leave the apartment prior to the fall. Investigators say there is no evidence indicating Kirsty having taken drugs, but results from tissue sample tests will take months to come back. Roberto Sanchez, Mr Graham’s defense lawyer, confirmed his client remained under investigation but insisted ‘I firmly

believe in his innocence.’ He said he would be arguing for the case to be ‘archived’ rather than see his client face homicide charges. The court has received CCTV footage showing Kirsty’s fall although it is understood the cameras are focused on the swimming pool area and not on the balcony she plunged from. Photos show she landed on poolside concrete just three feet from the water, dying instantly of multiple injuries. A court spokesman said yesterday: “The results of the police investigation — forwarded to the court — and the preliminary autopsy point to the victim throwing herself to her death. “There are no current indications of the participation of other people.” A crowdfunding appeal to pay for Kirsty’s body to be flown home from Spain has been set up and it had nearly tripled its £10,000 target earlier this week. This is not the first incident of its type to hit the popular resort - in November last year, Danielle Hall from Newcastle died instantly after falling from a balcony after a night out with her boyfriend.

Suicide attack kills eight civilians in Kabul

by Tahnee Wright Islamic State claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing in the Afghan capital, Kabul, on Wednesday that killed eight civilians in an attack on a convoy of NATO armoured personnel vehicles. The blast hit the convoy during the morning rush hour in one of the busiest parts of Kabul. Public health officials said eight civilians were killed and at least 25 wounded, with a number of civilian vehicles that were near the convoy destroyed or badly damaged. A spokesman for the U.S.-led NATO mission, U.S. Navy Captain Bill Salvin, said three U.S. service members were wounded in the attack. The vehicles, which are designed to with-

stand big blasts, were able to return to a base under their own power, he said. In a statement on its Amaq news agency, Islamic State said a suicide bomber detonated an explosives-rigged car as the convoy passed near the U.S. embassy. Although the Afghan branch of Islamic State operates largely in the eastern province of Nangarhar, on the border with Pakistan, the movement has also claimed a string of suicide attacks in Kabul. Witnesses said traces of blood and clothing could be seen on the ground at the blast site. The heavily armoured MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicles that foreign forces use to travel in Kabul appeared to have suffered only relatively minor external damage, witnesses said.

Spain says will not reopen Castor gas storage site after quakes Spain will not reopen the Castor underwater gas storage facility which was shut in 2014 following minor earthquakes in the area, after a study showed tremors could return if it resumed operations, the government said on Wednesday.Meant to store almost a third of Spain's daily gas consumption, Castor stopped gas injections after more than 200 minor earthquakes were detected in 2013.A study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University commissioned in October 2015 aimed to detect the origin of the quakes and their connection with the facility.‘The localisation of the tremors coincides with the Amposta fault line and the studies conclude that these faults were put under stress as a result of the gas injections,’ the energy ministry said in a statement.Castor was designed to store 1.3 billion cubic metres of gas and pump it in to the national grid when needed.The consortium which built the plant, including Spanish builder ACS and Canada's Dundee Energy, was paid â‚Ź1.35 billion in 2014 in compensation for not being able to operate the site.

Third edition launched today after EWNMG takeover. THE RTN newspaper is today launching an edition specifically produced for the Costa del Sol. After firmly establishing itself over the last 18 years as a popular free weekly newspaper with two editions throughout the Costa Blanca, the Costa del Sol now also becomes part of our circulation, readership and advertising area. Just three short months ago the RTN brand, with a reputation throughout the Costa Blanca for community news, was taken over by Euro Weekly Media Group (EWNMG). Cannibals lived on the Costa Blanca 10,000 years ago by Andy Mansell Researchers from the University of Valencia spent years examining human bones recovered from caves in the Alicante region, only to discover unsavoury signs of cannibalism. In a recent paper for the Journal of Anthropological Archaeology, University of Valencia anthropologist Juan V. Morales-Pérez and colleagues describe their discovery of human bones covered in marks that suggest what they delicately refer to as "anthropophagic practices." The bones were uncovered by archaeologists from the Coves de Santa Maria, close to Castell de Castells, a few miles inland from bustling Benidorm and it’s neighbouring coastal town. Carbon dating suggests at least two different instances of cannibalistic activity took place between 10,000 and 9,000 years ago. Although 30 different human bones are buried in the cave, the researchers write that there are skull remains from only three individuals: a heavyset person, a more diminutive one, and an infant (the infant skull shows no sign of cannibalism). At a minimum, then, two people were eaten, and possibly several more. There are no signs of violence, so these people were probably eaten after death.Identifying cannibalism is a tricky business, for both cultural and scientific reasons. Firstly, we don't want to believe our ancestors ate each other, and second, distinguishing signs of cooking and eating from other kinds of damage that bones can suffer over thousands of years buried in a cave is difficult. Morales-Pérez and his team spent several years analyzing the bones, and they identified several telltale signs that point to cannibalism.In short, when human bones are found in fossilized human excrement (coprolites) or with human bites on

them, there is a likelihood of cannibalism. Other evidence includes cuts on the bones from stone tools used for defleshing, disarticulating (pulling bones apart at the joints), skinning, and cracking open to get at marrow.And finally, evidence can come from the environment. If the bones are burned, or buried alongside animal remains with similar marks, those are additional clues that point to a feast that included human meat.Although this discovery offers us the first-ever example of cannibalism in Mesolithic Spain, the practice was not uncommon elsewhere in Europe and the Levant at this time. Cannibalism was also practiced during the Paleolithic, the "Stone Age" period that stretched from 2.5 million years ago to 11,700 years ago.

The big question for anthropologists is why these Spanish cave-dwellers turned to cannibalism. Were they starving and desperate? Or was this part of a spiritual ritual, perhaps sparked by the cultural rupture between an extremely ancient way of life during the Paleolithic and a radically new one that emerged during the agricultural era?Desperation or ritual? The truth will almost certainly never be discovered. However, the Mesolithic period in Europe, was a tumultuous time. Small groups of hunter-gatherers were undergoing a dramatic cultural transformation, making increasingly sophisticated stone tools with wooden components. They were on the cusp of the agricultural revolution, which would grant them a broader range of nutrition sources and greater food security. The environment was changing, too: the Ice Age was over, but the mid-Pleistocene warming period had not yet begun. And it now seems apparent that, for whatever reason, in a cave near the coast of Alicante, Spain, 120km south of Valencia, groups of humans began to engage in occasional acts of cannibalism.

Parking fines of €200 in Les Roques In March, the prohibition of parking in the narrow streets of the Les Roques neighbourhood came into force and all parking was restricted to residents-only. Residents were warned they could only continue to park their cars with a card, which could be obtained at a cost of €14 from La Oficina de Atencion al Publico with proof of address etc. The Local Police recently put out warnings on social media reminding residents of the restriction, as an increasing number of unauthorised cars were being found parked in the neighbourhood. After the initial less-stringent warnings and an avalanche of unauthorised cars continually being parked, especially by tourists over the Easter period, the police have now gone full-force in imposing penalties. The penalties are heavy, at €200, reduced to €100 if paid promptly. The council considers that drivers who are not residents of Les Roques are still made suitably aware of the restrictions given there is a sign at the beginning of L’avenida del Cid, the main access road. However, tourists have argued that the sign is too small and the parking spaces in the neighbourhood are white, which in any other city means they are open to all. The debate continues.

by Tahnee Wright It was a busy day on Monday for firefighters of the Provincial Consortium of Alicante as they completed two rescue operations and rescued four people in total – two hikers from Madrid on the Rock of Ifach, Calpe and another two hikers from Madrid in the mountain range of Bernia. The first rescue operation began at about 1.00pm, when a man and woman found themselves in a sticky situation at the Penon de Ifach. The 22-year-old man had suffered a blow to the head and was hanging on a rope. The consortium dispatched the 'Alfa 1' helicopter of the Consorcio de Bomberos along with a truck. Once on the rock, the crew found that, due

to the difficulty of the terrain, it was not possible to rescue the couple by air and thus took steps to move the man to an area accessible to the helicopter. The helicopter then took the couple to the base of the rock where they were met by a Red Cross ambulance and taken to a health centre. Just as the rescue operation on the Rock of Ifach was reported completed at about 3.45pm, the crew were called to rescue another couple who were lost in the skirt of the Sierra de Bernia, at the height of Casas de Bernia, Benissa. The helicopter quickly swooped across to Benissa and took the couple, who had lost their bearings, to safety, before heading back to base at 4.15pm.

9-year-old boy in neardeath shock in Finestrat

Two Guardia Civil officers rushed to the aid of a 9-year-old boy in Finestrat on Monday afternoon as he suffered a near-fatal anaphylactic shock after eating potatoes that had been fried in oil with fish, to which he is allergic. The officers were patrolling the cove of Finestrat when they were approached to attend the situation in a nearby restaurant. Arriving at the scene, they found the young boy’s airways were severely clogged and he was unable to breathe. The boy, who is of English nationality and lives in La Nucia, had eaten a portion of chips that were reportedly fried in oil previously used to fry fish. ‘The Big One 2017’

Largest collection of classic Jaguars ever in Spain.

by Tahnee Wright After 18 months of planning, ‘The Big One 2017’ took place across Saturday April 22 and Sunday April 23 in Parador de Leon, Northern Spain. A joint event between The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club, Spain, The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club, South of France, plus some very enthusiastic members from the JEC in the UK, the result was 97 classic Jaguars, (100 prior to three breakdowns) cleaned and polished to ‘within an inch of their lives’ with 201 very enthusiastic owners congregating at the Parador de Leon Hotel. The main event took place across the Saturday and Sunday, however many of the participants took two to three days or more to travel to and from their homes to the event. Cars and owners came from all over Spain, France and the UK and on the way up, many

members from The Costa Blanca region stopped off at Segovia - World Heritage City, for a spot of sightseeing. Members from the UK came from as far as Plymouth, Lancashire and North Wales – those opting for the scenic routes covering approximately 3,500 miles over many days. Having received prior special permission from Leon Town Hall, the outstanding collection of cars parked on St. Marco’s Square in front of the hotel and as expected, attracted much attention. On the Saturday evening, members gathered for pre-dinner drinks in The Cloisters to the sounds of classic guitar before proceeding to one of the medieval halls and enjoying a masked ball with three-course dinner and wine. As the Grand Draw was announced, winners took home cash prizes, starting at €500 for the first prize. A prize was also awarded for the best mask, won by Andrew

Honour in his classic venetian mask. Each table was issued with an envelope for a charity donation, raising in total €2,214 which will be donated to Cancer Research UK. After the final announcements, members enjoyed much music and dancing into the early hours. After a leisurely start on Sunday, members were delighted to meet with the Mayor of Leon at 11.00am before starting their engines at 11.30am and snaking through the city, out into the Spanish countryside and pulling up in Villafranca where a 21-course cocktail lunch was savoured. Scottish surfer rescued after more than 30 hours at sea A surfer who went missing off the coast of Scotland was found 13 miles from land after spending more than 30 hours in the water, British coastguard said on Monday. The man, named by the BBC as 22year-old Matthew Bryce from Glasgow, was reported missing after he set off to go surfing on Sunday morning from a beach near Campbeltown off the Scottish west coast, sparking a large search operation. He was finally located on Monday evening, still with his surf board after being spotted by a rescue helicopter.‘ Hope was fading of finding the surfer safe and well after such a long period in the water and with nightfall approaching we were gravely concerned,’ said Dawn Petrie from Belfast Coastguard Operations Centre in Northern Ireland which coordinated the search. ‘He was kitted out with all the right clothing including a thick neoprene suit and this must have helped him to survive for so long at sea. He was hypothermic but conscious and was flown to hospital in Belfast.’

Armonia de Ifach Lodge Quick painting presents new safety contest in Denia gear to firefighters

by Tahnee Wright Last year, the Marina Alta experienced some of the worst wildfires it had ever seen. Many houses were destroyed and hundreds of residents had to be evacuated as local volunteer firefighters risked their own lives to save others. Much of the equipment belonging to the local volaunteer firefighters was old and at least partly worn-out. With a limited life span, it needs to be replaced regularly to function correctly. The equipment is absolutely necessary but doesn’t come cheap and with a lot of it having been damaged in the fires of last year, many local organisations offered help to raise

funds to purchase more, including local Freemasons from the Lodge of Armonia de Ifach, the Calpe Charity shop and The Lions. Together, the organisations purchased vital breathing equipment which allows the firefighters to control a blaze from close quarters, a light portable pump - again allowing closer access than a fire tender might be able to get, the hoses necessary to be able to connect from the water deposit to the pump and more new hoses for connecting the pump to the nozzles. Members of the Armonia de Ifach Lodge presented the Calpe Volunteer Firefighters with the gear last week and received great thanks in return

Calle Marques de Campo will play host to the Concurso de Pintura Rapida Ciudad de Denia (translated to – ‘quick painting contest’) on Sunday June 11. In its fourth year, organised by the Department of Culture of the City Council of Denia and the Association of Artists of the High Navy ADAMA, the contest encourages anyone over 16-years-old to participate – setting up along the Marques de Campo between 11.00am and 6.30pm to create their masterpieces. The works will be judged in the Tourist Office of Plaza del Consell and prizes will be awarded as follows: 1st prize - €700 2nd prize - €400 3rd prize - €200 The ‘best local artist’ will receive a prize trip to Formentera for two people and the ‘best artist of the region’ will be awarded a batch of painting valued at €100. Finestrat nominated for rural tourism award

by Tahnee Wright The municipality of Finestrat has been selected by rural holiday booking website escapadarural.com to qualify for the IV Coetur Awards, in recognition of its efforts to promote rural tourism. Escapadarural.com has over 950,000 registered travellers on its site and promotes over 15,000 ‘rural escapes’ across Europe. With this nomination, Finestrat is the only municipality representing the Valencian Community, versus other rural destinations in Madrid, Galicia, Catalonia, Extremadura, Basque Country and La Rioja. The recognition comes after many months of hard work from the consistory in collaboration with INVATTUR - to define the municipality as an Intelligent Tourist Destination (DTI) particularly focusing on its rural areas.

The Mayor of Finestrat and Head of Tourism, Juan Francisco Perez, expressed his gratitude for the nomination for the Coetur Awards, which will be drawn at the IV European Congress of Rural Tourism, held on May 23 and 24 in Asturias ‘Being selected is already an incentive for the consistory to continue in its efforts. Finestrat has a treasure - its beaches of the cove, the natural surroundings of the Puig Campana. And this nomination comes to recognise the efforts being made by the City Council to regenerate and promote indoor tourism with sporting events and also events such as the recent Gastronomic and Traditional Mercat of the historic centre.’ The Mayor also highlighted the project of BTT Centre in the Font del Moli and the ‘Descubre Finestrat’ guided tours. Benitachell youngsters bounce back

Benitachell saw great success this weekend as many participated in the free youthorientated self-defence workshop on Saturday. The workshop, organised by Toni Colomer, Head of the Department of Sports, was designed for children and adolescents, from six to 17 years, guiding as to the appropriate defence tools to react in time to a possible threat.

Lionsclub International celebrates 100 years of service by Tahnee Wright The Lions Organisation celebrates its centenary this year. The Lionsclub was founded in June 1917 in Chicago by businessman Melvin Jones. The club is an international service club and has today 1.35 million members worldwide. In 1925 a lady writer, Helen Keller, who was deaf and blind, suggested the club to become Knight of the blinds. Since then the club adopted many aims to support, but in Spain the Lions stayed close to this first aim. The Melvin Jones Centre of recycled glasses is located in San Vincente. Many opticians bring their no-longer-used glasses to the centre and they are sent on to Latin America, Africa and also to European countries. The Lionsclub in Alfaz del Pi has British, Spanish, Dutch and Flemish members. Annually they organise events such as a Flamenco show which, in 2016, was attended by 400 people and raised funds for the food bank in Alfaz. For those who are interested in golf there

is an annual charity ‘Pitch and Putt’ tournament. Children love to get involved in the annual ‘Peace Contest’ an art-based project which sees the winner in Madrid, where there is a selection of all schools participating and the final winner goes to the USA in company of their family. For the younger ones there is the Saint Nicolas celebration in the beginning of December. The children get packages with fruits and sweets from Saint Nicolas. This celebration is

Red Cross applicants put through their paces on the Arenal Over the bank holiday weekend, the provincial office of the Red Cross conducted recruitment tests in Javea on the Arenal beach, with over 100 candidates competing for a place on the team responsible for monitoring the beaches of the province. All candidates had to have completed first aid and water rescue training of no less than 100 hours prior to submitting their applications. Candidates first faced a theory exam – testing their knowledge both across health care and aquatic rescue procedures. They then faced a practical exam, with a ‘victim’ in respiratory cardiopulmonary arrest before competing in a 400 metres swim race.

The Costa Blanca Anglo Spanish Association in Gata de Gorgosa On April 20, several members of the Costa Blanca Anglo Spanish Association went on an outing to Gata de Gorgos. The group met at the Restaurant Arrels, where they enjoyed lunch before heading on to the Joan Cashmira Guitar Factory for a guided visit. Members were talked through each of the various stages of guitar-making and learnt that the quality of the guitar is largely dependent on the type of wood used, with rosewood considered especially suitable for the purpose.At the end of the tour, Secretary Jenny Bond purchased a guitar, which maker Antonio expertly tuned for her. The Costa Blanca Anglo Spanish Association is a non-profit association boasting approximately 110 expatriate members. The principal aim of the Association is to give members the opportunity to increase their knowledge and understanding of Spain; its history, geography and culture. A trolley good dash Supermarket Sweep hit the aisles of a Villajoyosa cash and carry last week, when two lucky RTN competition winners had a mad ‘Trolley Dash’ around the store. Prize winners, Carol Tustin from Callosa d’en Sarria and Gillian Lindop, who lives close by in Villajoyosa, both had the opportunity to have a good look around the Ex-Pats Cash and Carry before the store closed to the public. Then, Ex-Pats owner, Gary Clayton went through the rules of the two minute dash, explaining the winners could only pick up one of anything and no multi-item packs were allowed, otherwise there were no restrictions.Although she had actually won the competition, Carol decided to let her husband Martin complete the dash, with firm instructions on what should go into the trolley. Wearing training shoes for extra speed, Martin moved around the aisles quickly, picking items out guided by carol and encouraged by Gary and his team of staff. When the two minutes were up, Martin smiled, mighty pleased with his haul, which included a prized large gammon joint. However, vegetarian Carol was less than happy that although he’d rushed down the right aisle, he’d forgotten her Quorn products.Next up, Gillian took a more measured approach heading towards the dry goods section, finishing with a dash around the frozen food aisles.She too was very happy with the end result, which included best value items such as coffee and English tea, which can be expensive here in Spain. Owner Gary, pleased with how successful the competition had been, told RTN: “ We’ve been open twelve years now and we used to run ‘trolley dash’ competition’s regularly when we first opened, but we haven’t run one for about ten years until today. People don’t realise just how big the store is either”, he said, adding he and his team of staff “must walk at least six or seven miles a day around these aisles”. Agreeing with the owner, both prize winners, said it was probably the shortest two minutes of their life as

Four-legged fundraising at AKIRA

AKIRA Dog Sanctuary was founded on April 1, 2011 after local animal lovers noticed a need for a shelter in the areas of Benissa, Teulada and Moraira. by Tahnee Wright After a lot of hard work and effort, the shelter in Benissa was completed and opened its doors on April 4, 2016; a full five years after AKIRA’s conception.AKIRA have rescued to date hundreds of abandoned dogs and re-homed them in Spain, Holland, Germany and the UK. During the year 2014 alone, despite not having a shelter, AKIRA rescued 128 dogs and re-homed 100. AKIRA opened their charity shop in Avenida de Portet, Moraira on February 1, 2013 and thanks to all their volunteers, this was such a big success that they moved into a much larger shop a few doors down, at 21 Avenida de Portet, Moraira in June 2015. The AKIRA charity shop is open Monday – Saturday 10.00am – 1.30pm and on Tuesdays and Thursdays they also open in the evening 5.00pm 7.00pm. AKIRA continue to look for more sponsors to help fund the shelter and its ongoing running costs. Seriously, just what illegal substances are government officials and tabloid editors on? Like the other 220 nations Russia doesn’t threaten the UK or its interests. However, this much provoked state has the means and the will to turn the UK into a glass-strewn parking lot if it feels threatened. Russian parliamentarian Frants Klintsevich doesn’t mince his words. “Britain’s threat deserves a tough answer.” The First Deputy of the Russian Defence Committee adds: “Russian cannot conquer Europe or the US through invasion or occupation. It is absolutely evident and thus pointless (to do so). It is high time to remind (London) of the vulnerability of its territory, which could be literally wiped off the face of the earth.” Russia is perfectly entitled to react to British Defence Secretary Michael Fallon threatens to use nuclear weapons pre-emptively. This privately educated idiot never held a proper job, ran a business and never wore anything but a school uniform. Yet, without feeling it necessary to give reason or consult the people, he absurdly threatens the annihilation of the world’s second most powerful nuclear-armed superpower. Britain’s infamous ‘if it bleeds it leads’ red top tabloids took up the cry. The Daily Mail, ‘So how do you like it, Vlad?’ This newspaper had earlier confused Latvia on the Baltic Sea with landlocked Mordovia 1,500km distant. Déjà vu: British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain on August 16, 1939: “History will judge the Press generally to have been the principle cause of war.” Alexander Khrolenko takes a more positive view. The international affairs analyst says the main purpose of

war rhetoric is to drive up arms sales. Sardonically, he alludes to taxpaying Britons paying for war with their incinerated ashes or their tax obligations. Until they are elected British MPs are a run o’ the mill lot who aren’t particularly wealthy. However, after their being elected, 78% of MPs are millionaires. Why? Because MPs and the Lords pass legislation that favour corporate interests. Then, having made trading conditions favourable they invest in corporations including

the taxpayer subsidised armaments industries. Senators who voted to attack Syria received 83 per cent more campaign money from military contractors than lawmakers voting no. The West’s legislators and corporate media should have their investments carefully scrutinised. I would put money on it that their slime trail leads straight to their stockbroker’s office. The fact is, every time we vote for politicians we vote for war.

An anniversary that went virtually unnoticed his week was May 1st 1769, the birth of Arthur Wellesley Duke of Wellington. Born in Dublin to aristocratic British parents, his first love as a boy was music. But his widowed mother anxious for her son not to be labelled a wuss, insisted he join the army where he was commissioned as a major, serving as the aide-de-camp to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. A bloke about as popular with the Irish as St George at a dragon convention. At age 26 he became Lieutenant Colonel in the 33rd Infantry Regiment of Foot, a rank he purchased with a loan from his brother, and was first bloodied in the disastrous Flanders campaign. In spite of this failed attempt to put paid to the First French Republic, Wellesley acquired a taste for war and obviously thought to himself: “I’ll have some more of that”. After returning home he soon left again for India where he covered himself in glory, not to mention curry sauce, and was awarded a knighthood for his efforts along with a promotion to the rank of Major General. In fact he was the very model of a modern major general. A year after returning to England, he became the M.P. for Rye, and shortly after was appointed Chief Secretary of Ireland. But he continued with his military career despite his parliamentary duties and took part in campaigns in the Peninsular War where he was made army commander and promoted to Field Marshall. But Waterloo is the one name above all others that is synonymous with Wellesley, who had by this time been granted a Dukedom. The Prussians under the command of General Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher - a name that if mispronounced sounds like someone trying to cough up a fish bone – played a decisive role in the battle, and along with other coalition forces under the command of Wellington, they finally defeated Napoleon’s army on the evening of Sunday 18th June 1815.If anything, Wellington is perhaps under appreciated. Apart from Waterloo and his status as Commander-in-Chief of the British army – a position he held up until his death – he also became Prime Minister twice and later a leading figure in the House of Lords.He is still regarded as one of the finest military tacticians of all time and is truly one of the greats of British history. Happy birthday Arthur.

Are Spaniards more honest than Brits?

As the US commemorated ‘National Honesty Day’ last week, language exchange app Tandem polled its members across Europe, Russia and China to compare the differences in honesty around the globe. Likely to be dishonest to their family were Chinese respondents (38 per cent) while Russians (32 per cent) found it hardest to be honest during school and university and Brits most commonly lie to their colleagues at work (26 per cent). Nearly half of those Italian respondents (45 per cent) would go so far as to lie about their health to avoid work, as well as over a third of Russians (34 per cent) and Germans (31 per cent). However, when asked to name the most dishonest of seven top professions including estate agents, lawyers, politicians and journalists, a more unanimous result was declared across the world. Over half (58 per cent) of all respondents voted politicians the most dishonest; in Spain (86 per cent), Italy (71 per cent), UK (69 per cent), Russia (55 per cent), France (54 per cent) and Germany (53 per cent). From nation to nation, the most dishonest respondents resided in the UK (62 per cent), China (62 per cent) and Russia (61 per cent), followed by France (59 per cent) and Germany (55 per cent) who each admitted to telling a few regular lies. Spain however was found to be the most trustworthy, with over three quarters (78 per cent) declaring they were very honest, followed by over half of Italian respondents (55 per cent). Respondents also admitted that it wasn't just zdults that they lie to, with Brits (70 per cent) and Russians (69 per cent) tending to favour the little white lies and tales of fairies and superheroes told to children, while scare tactics of ghosts and monsters prove most effective with children in China (76 per cent) and France (68 per cent).

I thought we could start back with a subject that wasn´t too taxing, although I did struggle a little to think of something that I haven’t written about before. I mean, I have written in the region of 300 articles about the Spanish language, and sometimes I accidentally write the same one twice. Anyway, inspiration came to me earlier on in the shower – I’ve never written about colours! I presume you know the basic ones – “rojo”, “azul”, “amarillo”, “verde”. Some people are surprised by the word for brown – “marrón” as they assume it means “maroon”. “Marrón” is also used colloquially to mean “a mess” or “a pain” (the mental association, for me any way, is “a heap of ..” something). “Blanco” obviously means “white” but it also means “blank”. “Tener la mente en blanco” means to have a blank mind, or “to go blank”. Next time this happens when you’re speaking Spanish, maybe you could remember to say “tengo la mente en blanco” – except that then it would be true – never mind! In English we say “black and white” but the Spanish put the words in the opposite order “blanco y

More than 2,000 people visit the exhibition of Sala Coll The anthological exhibition of the painter Miguel Sala Coll closed last week after having received an exceptional number of visitors. Over the month-long exhibition, more than 2,000 people visited the Lambert Arts Center in Javea to enjoy the oil paintings of the local artist, who specialises in depicting marina and everyday-life scenes. Javea’s Councillor for Culture, Quico Moragues expressed great satisfaction over the reception of the exhibition and also the reception of the exhibition of Rosa Padilla which is still in full swing in the Casa del Cable, sharing space with the newly-opened exhibition of the ‘Illes del Mon’ on the avenida Marina Espanola.

Anyway, going back to “rosa”, “naranja” and “crema” these also only change twice – that is, they retain the “a” ending for both masculine and feminine singular

“vestido rosa” “papel naranja” but add the “s” as usual for plurals. The word for purple varies according to shade. “Morado” is dark purple and there is also “violeta”, “lila” and “malva”. Amongst the reds is a popular colour called “granate”. We actually don’t have a common single word in English to describe this colour but I think the closest equivalents are “burgundy” or “claret”. I find that when I get students to describe their furnishings they very quickly find the need for the word “beige”. Interestingly the Spanish have had to import this word and until recently have retained the spelling “beige”. They have now officially changed the spelling to “beis” so it is pronounced similarly to the English word “base”. Here’s one more thing about colours – how do we say “-ish”? Well, “bluish” is “azulado”, “greenish” is “verdoso” “reddish” is “rojizo” and “yellowish” is “amarillento” –good for those more imprecise moments.

Is it the end of the road for QROPS? by

QROPS, or Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes, are a type of overseas pension that have been a popular option over the last 10 years with British expats, so why are Chorus not recommending them as the default option to our clients?

QROPS used to offer several benefits over UK based pensions as a transfer option if you lived abroad, but recent changes in legislation have equalised the benefits of transferring to a UK based pension, rather than a QROPS. In addition, HMRC have removed 9 countries and over 30% of existing QROPS providers from their approved list, and introduced new legislation that could lead to a potential tax charge of 25% for new QROPS applications received after March 9th 2017. So, what is the alternative? At Chorus we recommend you consider a UK based pension called a SIPP. A SIPP offers all the main benefits of a QROPS – flexible access from 55, passing on more to your loved ones, consolidating multiple pensions into one plan – but benefit from lower fees and the protection offered by UK FCA regulation coupled with the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, neither of which are available with a QROPS. SIPPs are often cheaper and are subject to far stricter regulation than QROPS, including full transparent charging, and strict rules for the investments held within your pension. This can lead to

substantially reduced annual costs, often saving clients thousands of pounds a year, and leading to superior growth of your pension funds.

It is worth bearing in mind that many financial advisors in Spain do not have the correct licenses or regulation required to recommend a SIPP so may only use QROPS, even if it is not necessarily the best option for you. We would always recommend getting a second opinion and work with UK regulated pension experts to ensure you receive the best advice. Chorus are currently offering to review your existing QROPS or potential pension transfer so that we can demonstrate where you could save money, and increase the security of your pension, by moving to a SIPP. Diamonds are forever Know your diamonds: The Certificate of Authenticity Whenever you are purchasing a piece of diamond jewellery or indeed loose diamonds, you should be issued with a diamond Certificate of Authenticity (COA). This certificate, also known as a 'diamond grading report', assures the buyer with verification of the quality of the stone. You could say that the certificate resembles a passport. Let's explore this further... You may ask the question who issues these certificates? The Certificate of Authenticity is issued by leading independent experts and the most recognised laboratories are the HRD of Antwerp, the GIA of New-York and the IGI of Antwerp. These organisations conform to global standards so it does not matter where you buy your diamonds, the ruling and validity for certification will be the same. What does the certificate state? The certificate will feature the 8 criteria that establishes the quality of a diamond and these are: Carat (Weight) Clarity

Colour Shape Proportions Symmetry Finish Fluorescence What is also important to know? Diamonds are issued with a unique inscription that corresponds with athe Certificate of Authenticity. The inscription is made by using a very fine laser onto the girdle of the diamond which can only be seen using a gemological microscope. In general, certification is supplied for diamonds of at least 0.50 carat in size and it is worth adding that the certificate does not contain any details for the value of the diamond. This must be done independently. To avoid difficulty should you wish to resell or insure your diamonds, note that Certificate of Authenticity issued directly from a jeweller will not be recognised in the industry mainly because the jeweller is not considered to

be an impartial assessor. Its provenance must come from such institutes and laboratories we have recommended above.

Trust is what makes a success of digital workplaces Trusting employees by giving them autonomy is the key to making a success of the digital workplace, according to research conducted by Nick van der Meulen of Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) and MIT’s Center for Information Systems Research (CISR). In an era where digital workplaces are quickly becoming the norm, the study found that organisations that invest most into these digital workplaces – in employee connectedness and responsive leadership – performed above their direct competitors in their respective industries. This was assessed on a basis of five indicators, including growth in market share, profit growth and employee satisfaction. The survey of 313 organisations showed that the high-performing organisations have an integrated and company-wide approach to greater employee connectedness. They achieve this by designing physical spaces, digital technologies and social networks specifically focused on enabling more collaborative work. ‘Connectivity built across silos rather than in an isolated fashion is critical to empowering employees to provide seamless customer experiences,’ van der Meulen explains. In other words, a physical and digital work environment

designed for a collaborative, integrated employee experience enables the delivery of more complex customer solutions.In terms of leadership style, high performers adopt a facilitative approach in which managers trust their employees to decide when, where, and how best to work. Management typically encourages employees to share mistakes and failures, but is also interested in their innovative ideas. Staff are allowed to be flexible, while enabling the entire organisation to learn, innovate and remain competitive. In addition, these leaders articulate a vision that links workplace design to the organisation’s strategic objectives. They encourage experimentation with new approaches to work, have a high tolerance for failure of new workplace initiatives and provide continuous learning opportunities. These companies also tend to have cross-functional digital workplace leadership teams. The research emphasised that responsive leadership - which is critical in getting full value from the digital workspace - requires a shift in mind-set. Leaders in highperforming companies facilitate workplace design rather than direct it. ‘The end result is that they empower employees to make decisions in the best interest of customer experience and their work,’ Nick van der Meulen added.

The Eurovision Song Contest 2017 will be the 62nd edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. It will take place in the International Exhibition Centre in Kiev, Ukraine, following Ukraine's victory at the 2016 contest in Stockholm with the song "1944", written and performed by Jamala. This will be the second time the contest takes place in Kiev, after 2005. The contest is expected to consist of two semi-finals on 9 and 11 May and the final on 13 May 2017. A bit about him. Graham William Walker, better known by his stage name Graham Norton, is a famous Irish comedian, actor, commentator, TV presenter and writer-columnist. In 1998 he established a production company “So Television” with Graham Stuart. This company still produces Norton’s chat shows, such as the famous “So Graham Norton” and “The Graham Norton Show”. When Norton decided to sell this company in 2012, he received about $28 million! He also earns millions of dollars thanks to his acting and writings; today Norton’s income reaches well over $5 million per year!

Skipping for the Church of England Avid skippers from the Albir Church of England turned out in force on what was a dark, cold and windy morning last Saturday. The two hour ‘skip-a-thon’ always saw at least one of the seven skippers jumping rope and encouraging passers-by to join in, with individual ropes and one longer rope. The skippers had great fun despite some of them not having skipped for 60 years and were delighted to have raised just short of €100 for the church. A service of Holy Communion is held in Albir every Sunday at 9.45am. A service of Holy Communion is also held at the Forum Mare Nostrum, Alfaz del Pi every Thursday at 11.00am. The second Thursday of each month is a healing service. The last Thursday of each month an open discussion - ‘faith, questions and doubts’ - takes place from 10.00am -10.50am (followed by the regular service). The church can be found in the centre of Albir - on the main road, Camino de la Cantera (near the Consum Supermarket), look out for the Rober Palas Hotel signpost. Turn right in front of the hotel and the Church (Norwegian Seaman’s Church) is just inside the next left turn, Carrer Mart. Annual Spring Fayre The Delfin Square in Calpe will play host to the Moftag Annual Spring Fayre on Saturday May 13. Moftag, a women’s group in Calpe have organised the fayre to raise funds for local charities. In the past, funds raised have been donated to the Food Bank, the Gar-gasindi School and the Red Cross. There will be plenty of stalls for visitors to peruse – the ever-popular home made cakes stand will be brimming with delicacies to enjoy alongside the bottle stall and a great selection of jams and chutneys. Charity Fitness Festival

The Plaza de Constitucion in Javea Old Town will play host to a fitness festival on Sunday May 7. The festival, promising a day of fitness and fun for everyone, will raise much needed funds for Grant A Wish and Javea Cruz Roja and is supported by ABBS Warrior Fit, Ethos Café Bar, Sarah L Pearce and Zumba Costa Blanca, along with the Ayuntamiento of Javea. There will be an array of activities for guests to get involved in – from yoga and meditation to Zumba, circuit training and HIIT training and refreshments will be available on tap for those who want to take a well-deserved break! The programme of activities will run from 11.00am – 3.00pm. The Real Mystery of Jack the Ripper. The Untold Investigation. by Darren Mark Wright

This is a plausible account by Wright using his research from casebook.org and I am assured that every fact of the case is actual fact and that these facts can be traced to their source. The investigators are a creation of the author and the conclusion made by Lieutenant Davis who has "weird, unique and imaginative ways of recreating crime scenes." Essential for interesting storytelling. His techniques are theatrical, using improvisations and revisiting scenes like a time traveller. The murder victims are included adding to the story-telling and characterisation. Multiple narration is a device used well by Wright as he seamlessly moves from 1888 to 1900 or 1905, from Whitechapel, London to South Africa during the Boer war. The story moves backwards and forwards constantly with lots of overlap and repetition. There is a purpose to this. As the investigation develops Davis uncovers more facts which develop into theories of who was responsible for committing these gruesome murders. What is satisfying is that when you finally reach the end and it is a long haul, so be warned, Wright presents you with the murderer(s) and the evidence. Lieutenant Christian Davis tells the story to a company of soldiers in the South African Republic before fighting commenced, twelve years after Jack the Ripper committed his murder spree. It was believed that an "intriguing, unsolved murder story" would distract them from the "throngs of the Great Boer War." After the war, Captain Arthur Phillip Hughes sat with a psychologist, Doctor Schultz who wanted to know about the Ripper killings. This was in 1902. war although the doctor believes it has more to do with the Ripper investigation. He retells the story explaining why the Ripper was never caught. We move into 1905 where a Doctor Brown is a tour guide taking tourists around the sites of the murders and other related locations giving his expertise to the Whitechapel murders, accompanied by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The main narrative details the murders committed during the 1888s in the East End of London. The social setting reminds one of Dickens with streets full of prostitutes, drunken binges with people passing out in the street and police patrolling the area. Bayonets were so common that you could buy them in the market for a penny. Murder was cried out so often just like the child crying wolf story. George Street was considered the most dangerous street in this locality even though the police were always patrolling the area. Emma Elizabeth Smith nee Jones was the first victim. We are told that she was beaten and raped with a blunt instrument. It had been alleged that she was savaged by a gang who had stolen her money. The truth revealed later in the story is more shocking. "They shoved some blunt instrument up her vagina. Destroyed her insides, then left her to die." She was depicted as a drunken prostitute, always getting into brawls. Her peritoneum was ruptured. The Coroner referred to the crime as being barbarous, a "brutal and dastardly assault." Hughes and Davis were very drunk when the next murder took place close to where they passed out in a stairwell in George Street. The doctor described the act as one of overkill because of the excessive number of stabbings, 38

stabs using a pen-knife and the fatal blow was a bayonet rammed through her heart. Martha Tabram. APASA Spring Fair APASA will hold their much anticipated Spring Fair this weekend at their shelter in Javea. Taking place on Saturday May 6 from 1.00pm, guests can browse the wide range of stalls and relax with a bap from the BBQ and a beer in hand. APASA was founded in 1999 by a group of various nationalities, Spanish, English, German and Swiss, with the aim of rescuing those animals that were evidently abandoned, ill-treated or lost. Initially there were just a dozen dogs, now there are over 250, needing full time staff. APASA rely greatly on volunteers, working in the shelter, walking dogs and at their many fund-raising events. All proceeds raised at the Spring Fair will directly fund the goal of making the lives of the dogs better and provide essential care for them. Sleep more to cut down on junk food Getting a full eight hours sleep is the holy grail for most people, but truthfully, how many of us actually reach that goal every night?A combination of work and family commitments, box sets of TV series on Netflix, catching up with friends and in Spain, fiestas, all add up to make sleep deprivation a modern phenomenon.But worse still, a new study which found sleep deprivation increased the brain’s sensitivity to food smells, making us far more likely to reach for unhealthy snacks and junk food. The findings might explain why people who don’t get enough sleep on a regular basis tend to eat more and gain weight, researcherssaid. For the study, which was shared at the Cognitive Neuroscience Society’s annual meeting in San Francisco, researchers analysed adults who had operated on just four hours of sleep. The participants were asked to inhale food odours such as those from crisps and cinnamon rolls while undergoing MRI scans. They were then asked to do the same experiment, but using non-food smells like fir trees. A few weeks later, the same participants repeated the experiment having had eight hours sleep the night before. When tired, participants showed greater brain activity in two areas involved in olfaction (the sense of smell) in response to food smells. When they were rested, this activity diminished. Additionally, the spike in activity wasn’t seen in response to non-food odours. Researchers said the results highlight a role for modulation in sleep dependent appetite and eating behaviour. So, the answer to losing weight is to get more sleep. Sounds so simple, but we live in the noisiest country in Europe with more fiestas than any other.So unless we want to live like hermits, it looks like the midnight pizza and kebabs and 6am chocolate and churros are here to stay.

Parental smoking linked to genetic changes in kids with cancer Parents who smoke may contribute to genetic changes in their kids that are associated with the most common type of childhood cancer, a recent study suggests. Some previous research has linked parental smoking to an increased risk of childhood leukaemia, but with less consistent results for mothers than for fathers. The current study is the first to link smoking by both parents to specific genetic changes in tumour cells of children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), said lead study author Adam de Smith, a researcher at the University of California San Francisco’s Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Centre.

‘Another way of looking at this is that we are seeing evidence of the toxic effects of tobacco smoke in the genes of the leukaemia cell, a molecular type of forensic pathology,’ de Smith said to Reuters. ‘These deletions are not inherited from parents but are acquired in the child’s immune cells, so we think the more important windows of tobacco exposure are during pregnancy and after birth,’ he added. Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia is a cancer that starts from the early version of white blood cells called lymphocytes in the bone marrow, the soft inner part of the bones where new blood cells are made. With this type of cancer, the bone marrow makes irregular lymphocytes with errors known as deletions in their DNA, causing unchecked growth that crowds out healthy cells. For the current study, researchers examined data on pre-treatment tumour samples from 559 ALL patients in a study of childhood leukaemia cases in California.

They wanted to see if any of the eight genes that are often deleted in ALL patients were missing in the tumour samples, and whether any of these deletions were associated with parental smoking habits. Roughly two thirds of the tumour samples contained at least one of these deletions, the study in Cancer Research found. Deletions were considerably more common in children whose mothers had smoked during pregnancy and after birth. For each five cigarettes smoked daily during pregnancy, there was a 22 per cent increase in the number of deletions; and for each five cigarettes smoked daily during breastfeeding, there was a 74 per cent increase in the number of deletions. Smoking of five cigarettes daily by the mother or father before conception also was associated with a 7 per cent to 8 per cent increase in the number of deletions.Boys were found to be more sensitive to the effects of maternal smoking, including smoking that occurred pre-conception. This could be explained by the fact that male foetuses grow more rapidly, leading to increased vulnerability of developing lymphocytes to toxins that cause genetic damage, the authors note.The findings should reinforce how important it is for parents to quit or cut back tobacco use, said Dr. Marte Reigstad, a researcher at Oslo University Hospital in Norway who wasn’t involved in the study.‘The best thing to do to reduce risk to a minimum is to cut out smoking altogether,’ Reigstad, who wasn’t involved in the study, said to Reuters. For people who grew up with parents that smoked, it’s important to understand that tobacco isn’t the only thing that causes cancer, Reigstad added. ‘Living healthy lives can also reduce cancer risk, especially concerning exercise and keeping a healthy body weight,’ Reigstad said.

EXFOLIATE - Shaving removes up to two layers of dead skin cells, which is brilliant exfoliation for the skin as dead skin cells, combined with oil and dirt on the skin surface can cause blocked pores. Warm the skin before shaving to open the pores and consider using a shaving brush to spread shave crème evenly and to lift the hairs. Most importantly, always shave with the growth of the hair, never against.

CLEANSE – After exfoliation, it is important to deep cleanse with a face wash containing tea tree oil and witch hazel, with their anti-septic, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory ingredients. This helps to calm any redness and irritation post shaving. Finish by rinsing the skin with cold water to close the pores. TONE - Men have more active sebaceous glands than women, meaning we often have better nourished skin than women. However the natural oils produced can also block pores. A toning product is key to reducing the levels of oil on the skin. Key ingredients to look out for are Kaolin Clay and Witch Hazel which are both great for removing excess oil. MOISTURISE - The face is exposed to all kinds of elements, which can swiftly result in a loss of moisture in the skin. Moisturising is therefore a key step in the shave/skincare routine. Go for a good quality, unscented product, always applied with clean hands massaging the cream gently into the skin. Fill a small travel container with your favourite moisturiser for re-applying during the day, as your skin dries out after exposure to the elements. How to grow Alcochofas (Globe Artichokes') Here in Spain, there is not just one globe artichoke variety or even two; there are many. Of course, there are many: there’s a variety for every region and a season that extends from early spring to early summer. Here, as in France and Greece, artichokes are often eaten young, tender and raw, sliced into salads. Or when they are the size of a walnut, they are briefly fried in olive oil. Then a little water goes in and they cook until just tender. These can be marinated, used in pasta sauces or enjoyed whole. When artichokes are picked young, the stems are not hard or pithy and it’s possible to snap rather than cut them off the plant.Even the stems can be eaten by peeling off the stringy outsides and eating the soft, crisp insides with salt, like you might celery. It’s bitter and nutty. You’ll love it or people will think you're mad. I hear a lot from people with rotting clumps. These are getting too wet over the winter and rotting off; they may also be too shaded. My plants are grown on heavy clay, but in full sun. On wetter ground they need to be sheltered from the worst of the winter weather and on a slightly raised bed to aid drainage. I mulch them now to give them a boost of nutrients, lock in moisture and keep weeds down.Sow globe artichoke seeds

around April indoors, hardening off in May to plant out in June. If you are in the south or somewhere warm sow outside in April, but these plants won’t flower till next year. Or buy young plants from garden centres, which can go out from mid-May onwards.Rare, heritage varieties tend to be easiest to source as seed; 'Romanesco' and 'Violetta Chioggia' from Chiltern Seeds are two fine purpleheaded varieties. Artichokes need moisture over the summer. If the roots are deep, they will often find their own, but young plants will need watering in. Artichokes do best in deep, rich fertile soil that is well-drained in a sunny position. A healthy plant will have a root system 90-120cm deep. Perennial crops are grown for five to 10 years, though they can last much longer. Commercially the plants are divided every four to five years to keep up vigour. Some growers do something called stumping to their crops: cutting back hard to force the plant to produce a new flush of offshoots.If done towards the end of August and provided you can keep the plants frost-free (either covering with fleece or low cloches) over the winter, you’ll get a much earlier crop the following year. It’s also a great method to get new offshoots from an old plant without having to divide the whole thing.

Small garden? Plant vertically In a small garden, all your ways are on show. There are often no hidden bits, particularly in a terrace garden; if not from ground level, then from upstairs, where you are definitely confronted with your lot. This can be delightful and frustrating all at once.It’s hard to hide the ugly bits in a small space: the lopsided shed, the old barbecue and the weed buckets. One solution is to have aesthetically pleasing barbecues and buckets, and to recycle plastic pots and old labels. Another is to distract.Who cares if your kitchen is a bit of a mess if you create a fantastic meal? All is forgiven and forgotten as you fight over the leftovers. The garden is no different. You need to lift the eye away from the offending object; no one is drawn to a barbecue if there’s something better to look at.The best thing to do is, come to think of this as the spires and saucers trick. Spires – tall, elegant flower spikes – lift the eye upwards, connecting the earth with the sky. If planted in pleasing clumps and loose drifts with the right rhythm, they introduce a clean line, a little clarity into the planting around them. Foxgloves (digitalis), dark pink Verbena Hastata, pale pink culver’s root (Veronicastrum Verinicum var incarnartum) white willowherb,Chamaenerion angustifolium 'Album' (which, be warned, self-seeds everywhere) and white wild indigo ( Baptisia lactae ) will all add elegant upright notes. Bugbane ( Actae simplex Atropurporea Group ), with its tall, gently bending spires of white fading to dusty pink, works well in deep shade, as long as it never dries out. Broad beans, elephant garlic, Babington leeks, and brussels sprouts do a similar thing in a mixed vegetable and flower garden. Once you have your top notes, you need to think about the rhythm section. Fill in the rest with umbels and other flat or saucer-shaped flowers such as orpine (Sedum telephium) , achilleas and perennial phlox (Phlox paniculata). Herb fennel, either the green (Foeniculum vulgare) or bronze-leave (F. 'Giant Bronze') forms, is delightfully relaxed and a little dishevelled in the right way, though fennel works best towards the back of the border, because it’ll get to 2m. Or try the biennia Angelica sylvestris 'Vicar's Mead' with heads of rounded umbels above dramatic dark foliage. You can allow a little selfseeding and use the rest as slightly bitter and perfumed spice.For something delicate that likes shade, lime green perfoliate alexander (Smirnium perfoliatum) flowers in early summer before the foliage. Perennial hairy chervil (Chaerophyllum hirstum 'Roseum' is shamelessly pink and fluffy, evoking countryside hedgerows: growing to 75cm tall, it prefers partial shade and is over by early summer. If you want white flowers, Baltic parsley (Cenolophium denudatum) will do a similar job in partial shade; it likes it a little damp and flowers much later and gets taller – up to 150cm tall. Parsley, chervil, par-cel (looks like parsley, tastes like celery), caraway and sweet cicely are edible choices: eat the leaves, then leave them to flower for the bees. It’s also worth leaving a few carrots, celery and parsnips to stand over winter and flower the next spring, where they may self-sow and certainly will be much admired.

Studio living in style Studio living has become a necessity of modern life. With property prices, particularly in cities, soaring to levels preventing younger people from taking that first step on the property ladder.

Sometimes a tiny studio is the only affordable way to live and work in a city, when people are tired of flatshares and room renting. However, if you think tiny spaces are a headache, think again. There are so many inspirational examples of just how harmonious and stylish the smallest studios can be. With several rooms miraculously compressed into one, every centimetre needs to be cleverly used to its greatest effect. Here, in this newly renovated Manhattan apartment, Russian architect Peter Kostelov, has featured tucked-away furniture and used 'versatility' as his watchword for all the available space.Originally the pint-sized apartment had two bedrooms, a living room, a bathroom and a kitchen, but this layout boxed in each space. Instead Kostelov wanted to make the whole apartment more adaptable: the living room can easily be switched around into a dining room, while a working studio turns into a guest bedroom in no time at all. A bed slides out into the bedroom, while a table and two benches on wheels draw out to just over two metres in length into the living room. The narrow kitchen faces a brick wall across a tiled corridor, where wooden shelves fold out to form a breakfast table or extra counter space. Kostelov also paid attention to providing brighter living spaces, quieter sleeping areas away from the street, more ventilation in the living room by the large windows. Living in small quarters doesn't have to mean sacrificing style for drab storage solutions and "it's the only thing that will fit" furniture. It just takes a little creativity. There is no need to paint an entire small apartment bright white; colour can add real drama to small spaces and the addition of a mirror can cleverly mimic a doorway, creating the illusion of grander space. Forget cumbersome wardrobes. Instead go for separate storage crates (Ikea is a one-stop mecca for storage solutions) and hanging rails, which can be hidden behind a decorative curtain. Studio rooms are often used for everything from dining and entertaining to reading and watching television. A flexible, well-planned lighting scheme can give the impression of extra space and create handy areas for different activities within the room. Well-positioned lights highlight your prized possessions and as you will not have space for many, make sure they are really important to you. Effective lighting can evoke so many different atmospheres - depending on what kind of statement you want to make. Remember, these small spaces can be the bane of any studio dweller or owner's life, but they can also be a blessing in design disguise. Awkward, small spaces are often a catalyst for change, forcing you to a) clear the clutter and b) come up with clever design ideas you may never have thought of otherwise.

Kick your map into touch with a new phone app It’s not easy being a pedestrian, even more so if you’ve moved to a new city, or are unfamiliar with the one you’re staying in. You can’t help feeling like the world wasn’t built for you, it was built for cars, which are bigger and scarier than you and one false move, can leave you within inches of your life. But you’re just trying to find a coffee shop that isn’t terribly crowded or an ATM that won’t charge you 5€ to withdraw your own money. Why should walking around a city be so difficult? Well, the simple truth is, it shouldn’t be and thanks to a new phone APP called Sidekix, it doesn’t have to be. The three entrepreneurs behind the app – Jenny Drezin, a native New Yorker living in Israel who’s admittedly had one too many traveling misadventures; Miron Perel, a graduate of the Technion Institute in Israel with a background in aerospace engineering; and Eli Baram, a computer science graduate of Tel Aviv University – thought that pedestrians were getting lost in the navigation shuffle and wanted to develop an app dedicated specifically to them.

Thus Sidekix was born, a GPS platform that uses interest-based routing – suggesting places and things to do based on the user’s passions – to enhance the experience. Or, according to CEO Perel: “It’s an urban navigation app that offers you a personalized walking experience to get you to your destination in a better, more interesting way.” From fashion, food, culture, art and nightlife to simply finding safer, well-lit routes at night, Sidekix is designed to find routes based on your preferences. You can also add specifications to routes, such as stopping at an ATM and grocery store on the way to a friend’s house. And though it was developed in Israel, Sidekix is now available in more than 100 cities worldwide, including Tel Aviv, New York, London, Rome, Barcelona, Boston and San Francisco, and new cities are added regularly. It’s available for free in the App Store and Google Play.

Fake Ferraris Busted In Spain We’re all used to seeing fake Rolex watches doing the rounds for unbelievable prices and Raybeni sunglasses masquerading as Rayban Aviators, but what about knock off cars? Is it possible to fake a Ferrari? Well, you may be surprised to know, the answer is yes and Spanish Police have the evidence to prove it, having recently busted a gang dealing in rip off versions of the supercar. They have just caught a group of fraudsters for the second time in five years, specialising in turning bog standard passenger cars into Ferrari-badged fakes and selling them to unsuspecting punters. According to Spanish detectives, the gang was caught last month in the process of transforming 14 mid-range motors into highly desirable super sports cars. The gang allegedly planned to sell the cars via the internet. Some had already been listed online as second-hand vehicles even though they were still a work in progress. Police said the investigation into the fake supercars kicked off after it became aware of “a vehicle that simulated the appearance of a sports car of the Ferrari brand infringing

the industrial property rights of the aforementioned brand”. “The agents also located the clandestine workshop ... where they found 14 vehicles in different degree of transformation. Four of them were several Ferrari models already ready for sale,” police said. “The records involved a number of parts, distinctive elements of the marques concerned, fibreglass moulds for body parts of the marques concerned, speedometers and vehicle-related documentation.” One of the items seized was a complete blank for the body of a V8-engined Ferrari F430, a mid-2000s coupe and convertible worth more than $200,000 (£160,200) second-hand. The gang appears to have sourced a number of donor cars to run underneath the fake skins. These range from what looks like a V6engined Ford Mondeo to a Pontiac Fiero and even a mystery Peugeot. The trickery didn’t just relate to fairly recent prestige models, either; at one point the vision cuts across a complete outer-skin cast of a Dino, a car potentially worth $500,000 – if it’s the real deal. Now, next time one of our lovely ‘looky looky’ men offer you a Ferrari for a knock down price ….. Look the other way!

Flying car goes on show in Monaco A Slovakia-based company unveiled the commercial design for a flying car priced at more than €1 million in Monaco, saying it was ready for pre-orders with first deliveries expected by 2020.

AeroMobil said its teardrop-like shaped AeroMobil Flying Car, displayed at the Top Marques Monaco, could switch to flight mode in less than three minutes. The wings fold away for driving on roads and swing out for flying. The company, one of several developing such flying vehicles, aims to make up to 500 units of its first commercially available edition, priced at €1.2 million to €1.5 million To fly, the car would need an airfield or another approved place to take off, while owners would require driving and pilot licenses, AeroMobil Chief Communications Officer Stefan Vadocz said. AeroMobil said deliveries to customers of the flying car, which Vadocz said would comply with air and road regulations, was expected to start by 2020. Before so-called flying cars become mainstream, they must overcome a host of flight safety issues to allay public fears. Governments are already studying how to regulate drones and driverless cars, while the auto and aviation industries are working on advances in software and city planning to ensure the vehicles are restricted to travel within safe corridors.

Following their pulsating 32-21, quarter final victory over Babyauto Zarautz last Sunday, the men of La Villajoyosa Rugby Club march into a semi-final double against CRC Pozuelo, with the first leg taking place this coming Sunday May 7, in Madrid. Already ahead 34-22 from the first leg of the quarter final against Zarautz, La Vila, playing at home in front of a packed stadium of vociferous and expectant supporters, overcame early nerves and a second half comeback to seal a memorable victory, by 23 points over the two legged fixture. and sent the crowd into a frenzy of excitement. La Vila remain unbeaten in all fixtures throughout this incredible season, having won all their league games, to finish top of Division of Honor B, and now both matches of their quarter final.They now face a two legged semi- final against CRC Pozuelo, who did not have such an easy time in their two quarter-finals.Pozuelo lost the first leg away to CPC Les Abelles 26-29, but managed to win the second leg at home by 26-20, squeezing through into the semi-finals by a slender 3 point margin over the two legs. confident in the upcoming matches against Pozuelo and know everything is to play for both teams. Following the first leg in Madrid this Sunday,La Vila return to their home stadium on the next Sunday May 14, hoping to have a lead intact. After their stunning victories against Zarautz, La Vila are one step closer to their ultimate goal of a return to the Spanish Rugby Premiership. Should they be victorious in the semi-finals against Pozuelo, La Vila will face the winners of the other semifinals, RC Hospitalet or UBU Colina Clinic in the two-legged play-off final on the last two weekends of May.

MorairaTeulada U3A International Walking Football Tournament Members of the Moraira-Teulada U3A extend their greatest thanks to all who participated in the first annual International Walking Football Tournament on April 21, hosting two teams from Manchester, three from Costa Blanca South and three from Costa Blanca North. It was a fiercely contested final, Moraira A beat Playa Flamenca on penalties, after a close 2-2 draw in normal time. A great result as the Flamenca's were unbeaten for three years and were determined to defend their record at all costs. Hero of the day was Moraira A goalkeeper Alan Gibb, who saved a few penalties, scored a penalty and then, finally, saved a penalty from Flamenca's goalkeeper to win the game. Alan’s wife Yvonne couldn't watch as the shootout progressed! A large crowd turned out in support of the event organised by Chris Dry and members of the Moraira-Teulada U3A also extend their thanks to Net Connect who kindly supplied all of the silverware for the tournament. Top cyclists prepare for ‘La Vuelta’ in Benitatchell In a dress rehearsal for this Summer’s ‘La Vuelta Ciclista Espana’, Spain’s version of the ‘Tour de France’, three ex-champion cyclists will race to the top of the Cumbre del Sol mountain in Benitatchell next week. Retired professional cyclists, Miguel Indurain, Perico Delgado and Oscar Pereiro, along with other sponsors of the Vuelta Ciclista of Spain, will test ride the local stage of the race, to the summit of Puig Llorenca del Poble Nou de Benitatxell, next Wednesday May 10. The pro-am day of cycling, sponsored by Unipublic, teams the ex-champions with local amateur riders who are familiar with the circuit. The 50km circuit will begin in Calpe and climb the steep road up to the summit of the mountain, most commonly known locally as Cumbre del Sol, passing through Moraira on the way back to it’s finish back in Calpe. The race will follow the exact route of the end of the local stage of the Vuelta a Espana, which returns to the area in late summer, on August 27. In 2015, one of the stages of the Vuelta ended in the Poble Nou de Benitatxell, and more specifically on our Puig Llorença (Cumbre del Sol) and was won by Tom Domoulin.

The stage had such an impact on the cyclists, who were pushed to their maximum by the ferocity of the terrain and the spectacular scenery around Cala Moraig, that the organisers of the Vuelta have decided to repeat this great challenge and return to the area in 2017. The organiser fell in love with the mountain in 2015, with it’s steep climbs and 22% incline they felt it had everything to succeed in the world of cycling. The ascent pushes the competitors to the limit and the landscape, with the beach, the cliffs is extraordinary and rare within the world of cycling. On August 27 the race stage begins in Orihuela and finishes in Calpe after it’s climax at the top of Cumbre del Sol. The Three ex Spanish professional cyclists pitting their wits against the mountain next Wednesday have a wealth of tour titles under their helmets. Miguel Indurain, 52, who has a house in Benidorm, won five consecutive Tours de France from 1991 to 1995, the fourth, and last, to win five times. He won the Giro d'Italia twice, becoming one of seven people to achieve the Giro-Tour

double in the same season. He wore the race leader's yellow jersey in the Tour de France for 60 days. And since the revoking of Lance Armstrong's seven wins, he now holds the record for the most consecutive Tour de France wins and shares the record for most wins with Jacques Anquetil, Bernard Hinault and Eddy Merckx. Perico Delgado,57, won the 1988 Tour de France, as well as the Vuelta a España in 1985 and 1989. One journalist enthused that: "In those 4 kilometers more things happen than in a thousand-page novel."

What next for Joshua?

Last Saturday's thrilling Wembley victory over Wladimir Klitschko, in front of a post-war British record 90,000 fans, leaves former Olympic champion Anthony Joshua unbeaten in 19 fights as a professional now holder of the WBA and IBF world champion. In stopping the most dominant heavyweight of this century, the question now for Joshua is who will he fight next? The champion’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, has been hitting the phones since Saturday night to make sense of a complicated landscape, but the odds are Joshua will not fight again until October. Matching an event as iconic as last week’s which delivered an expected pay day of 15 million pounds and finding an opponent capable of competing, looks a tall order in the short-term. However this hasn’t stopped the big names lining up to challenge boxing’s latest hero. First to throw his hat into the ring was Tyson Fury, who tweeted a provocative message after the match from his twitter account @tyson_fury, which read: “Well done @anthony fJoshua, good fight, you had life & death with @klitschko & I played with the guy, let’s dance “ Joshua did hit the canvas hard before toppling Klitschko, whereas Fury ducked, weaved and earned a comfortable points win by comparison in 2015. Fury who would understandably be Joshua’s preferred option stoked the fire a little further on Monday by claiming: “I can beat AJ with one arm tied behind my back. I don’t even need a warm-up.” Meanwhile, Anthony Joshua had already tweeted a message to Fury which read, "Fury, where you at baby?"

The truth remains that, substantially overweight and devoid of a boxing licence, former world champion Fury will likely need time and a warm-up bout before meeting the IBF and WBA champion. Most boxing pundits agree the champion’s next fight will proably be in Madison Square Garden against a lesser challenger, or at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff against WBC champion, Wilder. Joshua's rise, after being all-but beaten in the sixth round, to administer a devastating uppercut and finish in the 11th, wowed the world of boxing. American viewers tuned in and lapped up the destruction. Legendary boxers Sugar Ray Leonard and Evander Holyfield were just some of those tweeting praise, while promoter Eddie Hearn believes his fighter's profile is now "stratospheric", adding: "He is unquestionably world boxing's biggest star."

We’re always being told that it’s never too late to take up a new sport, but very few of us imagine we’d become a gold medal winning athlete once we did. However that didn’t deter Man Kaur, from Chandighar India, who took up sprinting rather late in life, at the age of 93 years young, following encouragement from her son Gurdev Singh, 78.Eight years later, the remarkable athlete has just won her 20th medal at the World masters Games in Auckland New Zealand. The World Masters Games is an international multi-sport event held every four years which, in terms of competitor numbers, has developed into the largest of its kind. Anyone can participate in the games so long as they are over the age of 35 though some sports will allow athletes who are younger than that. Participants compete for themselves – there are no country delegations. Beyond the age requirement and membership in that sport's governing body, there are no competition qualification requirements. The 101-year-old Indian athlete said she feels like a hero after picking up her first gold medal at the New Zealand World Masters Games.Man Kaur won gold, and the heart of the crowd, when she completed the 100m sprint at the 2017 World Masters Games in Auckland on Monday. Ms Kaur is the only contender in the over 100 age grade, so effectively, unless she falls over and fails to finish, the 101 year old is guaranteed a Gold medal every time she takes to the field.But that isn’t the point, as World Masters Games director Dianne McAteer succinctly pointed out, Ms Kaur is "just everything that World Masters Games epitomises"."It's a sport for life, it's being active, it's about not letting age be a barrier to being active so she's amazing." Ms Kaur completed the 100 metres in a personal best time of, one minute and 14 seconds, but didn’t rest on her laurels, through a translator she told TV reporters she feels like she's "Mother India"She went on to win another three gold medals during the remainder of the week, in the 200 metre sprint, the shotput and in the javelin, competition, where she set a new record for her age group of 5 metres. Speaking to the press afterwards the ecstatic winner of 20 medals said, "I'm going to run again, I'm not going to give up. I will participate, there's no full stop." Speaking to the Canadian Press, her son said: "When she wins, she goes back to India, and she's excited to tell others, 'I have won so many medals from this country.' Winning makes her happy." When training at home in Chandigarh, Kaur runs a number of short distances every evening - and she believes other women should follow in her footsteps. "She encourages them, old ladies, that they should run, they should not eat wrong foods, and they should encourage their children also to take part in the Games," said her son.So, the question is, will Man Kaur be back to defend her titles at the next World Masters Games in Kansai Japan in 2021 at the age of 105?
