by Tahnee Wright & Andy Mansell The snap UK General Election, called this week by Prime Minister Theresa May, took the majority of the British public by complete surprise, coming so closely after last year's Brexit referendum. May claims it is the only way to guarantee political stability for years ahead as Britain negotiates its way out of the European Union. ‘I have just chaired a meeting of the cabinet where we agreed that the government should call a General Election to be held on the 8th of June,’ May said in a surprise statement outside her Downing Street office. ‘It was with reluctance that I decided the coun-
try needs this election, but it is with strong conviction that I say it is necessary to secure the strong and stable leadership the country needs to see us through Brexit and beyond.’ Under current legislation, the next election was not scheduled to take place until 2020. May's Conservatives, who were split on the issue of European Union membership ahead of last year's referendum, are currently far ahead of Labour, the main opposition party, according to opinion polls. For many ex-patriate UK citizens living in Spain, the early election has come as a severe blow to their hopes of being able to cast their votes in future elections.

Current legislation does not permit anyone living outside of the UK for over 15 years the right to vote in elections and referendums in the country. The last Conservative manifesto, which brought them to power in 2015, promised to redress this issue, by bringing a 'Votes For Life' bill through Parliament before the next election, which was scheduled for 2020. However, Sir Roger Gale, one of the MP's behind the bill has confirmed by e-mail to supporters awaiting news of its progress, that the 'Votes For Life' bill will not be pushed through in time for the people who've lived in Spain over 15 years to vote in the General Election this coming June. Detained in Denia British father arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of son.
by Tahnee Wright A British father was arrested in Denia on Sunday on suspicion of trying to kill his son. The police found the 70-year-old man covered in blood and holding a hammer in his hand after neighbours alerted them to the attack. It was claimed he had repeatedly hit his 20-year-old son over the head with the hammer while he slept. The man's wife was also rushed to hospital after she was injured trying to prevent the attack. Detectives followed a trail of blood when they arrived at the property at
around 10.00am on Sunday morning and found the victim lying semi-conscious in bed. The son and mother's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening and investigators are probing the possibility the suspect suffered a psychotic episode. A spokesman for Spain’s National Police told the press: ‘We have arrested a British man aged 70 who smashed his 20-year-old son in the head with a hammer while he slept.’ ‘His partner, the mother of the young man, was also injured whilst trying to prevent her husband from assaulting his victim.’‘Neighbours spotted the detainee shaking his wife
Mayor of Tormos found dead in orange grove The municipality of Tormos was in mourning over the Easter weekend after Mayor Vicente Javier Ripoll suffered a fatal heart attack last Thursday. Ripoll - who was only 50-yearsold - went to work in his orange grove on Thursday morning and after he did not return for lunch, his two daughters went to look for him and found him laid motionless on the ground. His daughters alerted the emergency services but sadly, the SAMU ambulance pronounced him dead at the scene. Ripoll was the Mayor of Tormos – a small Marina Alta town with just 300 inhabitants - since 2007 and was in his third term in office. He leaves behind his wife and two daughters.

Jet2 aircraft in scare at Alicante airport A Jet2 plane carrying 238 passengers and crew from Leeds-Bradford airport was involved in a minor scare on landing at Alicante-Elche Airport last week. The Ministerio de Fomento, ministry of public works, has opened an enquiry on the incident which happened at 10.38h on the morning of Monday April 10. The aircraft, a Boeing B757-200, operated by Jet2.com, bounced whilst landing on Runway 10 at Alicante Airport, prompting the captain to take control of the plane. However, on bounce recovery, the tail of the plane hit the runway surface, causing the plane to roll, but continue to land succesfully. The incident was not considered to be major and although the disembarking passengers appeared shaken by the experience, there were no reported injuries to either holidaymakers or crew. The flight from Yorkshire had proceeded routinely without incident and after a close inspection of the damaged tail, the return flight to Leeds-Bradford Airport departed normally. Spain's Civil Aviation Authority ( CIAAIC ) have also opened an investigation on the incident and reported substantial damage to the aircraft's tail. Aviation sources were careful to point out that although incidents of this type are considered rare, they do happen on occasions and can generally be attributed to slight miscalculation on the part of the pilot.
€940,000 public works plan for Javea
The City of Javea has announced a series of public works that will be implemented before the end of the year and to which have been allocated a total investment of €940,000. The four urban improvement projects span three residential areas: the town, the port and the Arenal, alongside an extensive asphalt plan. Paco Torres, the Urban Escena Councilor has confirmed: With a budget of €200,000, Calle Cervantes – the raised road on a wall parallel to Avinguda d'Alacant - will see substantial redevelopment. Pipes and sanitation networks will be renewed, a new lighting system will be installed and new asphalting will be laid. With a budget of €109,000, Avenida Lepanto is the Duanes area will see improvements by the way of new paving and a rearrangement of the parking lot to facilitate the creation of 20 new spaces. Along the Arenal with a budget of €148,000, the section of Avenida del Pla which covers Javea Park (the eastern pavement from the roundabout of the Tennis Club to the new roundabout) will have its pavements widened to two metres and a redevelopment of the public parking will also take place. A total of €430,000 has been budgeted for the asphalt plan and areas to be asphalted are yet to be confirmed.

24 feb 21st - 27th - 2 April march 2017 continued from Front Page In the email distributed to people on his mailing list on Wednesday April 19, he said: ‘The commitment, made in good faith, was to have the legislation and supporting franchise infrastructure approved by the Electoral Commission on the statute book in time for a 2020 General Election and my understanding from Chris Skidmore in the Cabinet Office is that that process was on track at the time that the Prime Minister announced her intention to seek an election on June 8’ He goes on to explain why the contentious nature of the bill makes it impossible to push through quickly: ‘It gives me no pleasure to have to say that there is no prospect of this process being expedited, as some have sought to suggest, by the time that Parliament is dissolved on May 2/3. Only agreed and non-contentious measures will be allowed to pass through both Houses of Parliament – and a 'Votes for Life' bill will have to go through both Houses - before the House is prorogued. All other (contentious) measures will have to be carried over or re-introduced in the next parliament.’ As a small crumb of comfort to disappointed ex-patriates in Spain, Sir Roger ends the email by saying: ‘I am sorry to have to offer blunt and disappointing news but can only say that I, Geoffrey Clifton-Brown and others who support the 'Votes for Life' cause, will seek to ensure that this is contained within our Party`s manifesto and introduced as early as possible in the next parliament.’ Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron released a statement – ‘This election is your chance to change the direction of our country. If you want to avoid a disastrous hard Brexit. If you want to keep Britain in the single market. If you want a Britain that is open, tolerant and united, this is your chance. Only the Liberal Democrats can prevent a Conservative majority.’ As did Green party co-leader Caroline Lucas – ‘Britain is at a crossroads – and today’s
announcement means that people are rightly given a say over the direction this country is going to take. Only the Green party offers a bold, positive vision for a different kind of Britain. At this election, we will stand for an economy that works for everyone, not just the privileged few; a Britain that’s open to the world and the protection of our precious environment. We will stand up to the politics of hatred and division that is scarring our communities and give people across the country a chance to vote for a better Britain.’ Along with Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the Labour party – ‘I welcome the prime minister’s decision to give the Brit-ish people the chance to vote for a government that will put the interests of the majority first. Labour will be offering the country an effective alternative to a government that has failed to rebuild the economy, delivered falling living standards and damaging cuts to our schools and NHS. In the last couple of weeks, Labour has set out policies that offer a clear and credible choice for the country. We look forward to showing how Labour will stand up for the people of Britain.’ The pound strengthened by almost half a cent against the dollar as May spoke, reflecting investor relief that earlier rumours of a shock resignation did not transpire. ‘I quit’ – George Osborne George Osborne announced on Wednesday that he is quitting as an MP but will carry on ‘fighting for that Britain I love’ as editor of London’s daily newspaper – the Evening Standard. In a letter revealing his decision to Conservatives in his Tatton constituency, he said he was thrilled to be taking charge of ‘a great newspaper.’ The former Chancellor, 45, made plain that he intends to stay active in political debates on issues he is passionate about. And he hinted he could make a political comeback in future, saying he was leaving Westminster ‘for now.’ He wrote: ‘I am stepping down from the House of Commons - for now. But I will remain active in the debate about our country’s future and on the issues I care about, like the success of the Northern Powerhouse.’ ‘I want a Britain that is free, open, diverse and works with other nations to defend our democratic values in the world. ‘ ‘I will go on fighting for that Britain I love from the editor’s chair of a great newspaper. It’s still too early to be writing my memoirs.’ Explaining his decision to step down, he said: ‘At the age of 45, I don’t want to spend the rest of my life just being an ex-Chancellor. I want new challenges. ‘ ‘I’m very excited about the opportunity to edit the Evening Standard. I’ve met the team there and their energy and commitment to this great newspaper are positively infectious.’ He promised his editorship would give the public ‘straight facts and informed opinion to help them to make the big decisions Britain now faces about the kind of country we want to be. That starts with the coverage of this general election.’ Mr Osborne has been an MP for 16 years and was the youngest Tory MP of his generation in 2001. He was already well known as a backroom Conservative who headed the political section of Conservative Research Department and later worked for John Major at No 10 and for William Hague. Promotion at Westminster was swift, rising to become shadow chancellor and David Cameron’s closest political adviser in opposition. He was regarded as one of the most influential Chancellors of recent years as a member of the Coalition ‘Quad’ and later in Mr Cameron’s majority Conservative Government regularly tipped as a future Premier until the Brexit referendum derailed his rise.

Altea police adds to its vehicle fleet The Local Police of Altea has added two new vehicles to its fleet, comprising five cars and six motorcycles. The Mayor of Altea, Jaume Llinares, and the Councilor for Traffic and Public Safety, Vicent Ripoll delivered the vehicles to the Head of the Local Police of Altea, Herminio Navarro last week. These new urban SUVs replace two older models from the fleet and benefit from 130 horse power, essential to access areas such as the Sierra de Altea. Both vehicles also have the latest technology lights, sirens and an attenuator that minimises noise. They are equipped with the latest communications technology – both a TETRA and COMDES system.
Diver rescued in Javea A 55-year-old Spanish diver was rescued over the Easter weekend and taken to the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) facility in Castello. The man fell ill with decompression syndrome as he was diving at around 14 metres along the Javea coastline. He was taken to the Port of Javea by boat, where he was attended by the SAMU medical team, who decided to transfer him to Castello. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a medical treatment which enhances the body's natural healing process by inhalation of 100 per cent oxygen in a total bodychamber, where atmospheric pressure is increased and controlled.

British woman stabbed to death on Jerusalem train by Staff Reporter A Palestinian man stabbed to death a British student on Jerusalem's transit network on Friday. The incident occurred in a train carriage on the light rail network near the walled Old City. TV footage showed blood on the floor of the carriage with police officers restraining a man and carrying him away. A paramedic for the Magen David Adom ambulance service said the woman had suffered multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead in hospital. Israel's ambassador to Britain, Mark Regev, named the victim as Hannah Bladon on his Twitter account, adding that she was ‘murdered in a senseless act of terror.’ The British Foreign Office in London said in a statement: ‘We can confirm the tragic death of a British national in Jerusalem. We are providing support for her family at this difficult time and are in touch with the local authorities.’ Israeli media said Bladon was a 21-year-old exchange student studying at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Israeli police earlier said she was 25. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent condolences in a statement issued by his office. The Shin Bet domestic security service identified the assailant as 57-year-old Jamil Tamimi and said he was a Palestinian from Arab East Jerusalem with mental health problems who was convicted in 2011 for sexually assaulting his daughter. A Shin Bet statement added that the assailant had previously tried to commit suicide by attempting to swallow a razor blade. The attack occurred as Christians marked Good Friday and Muslims held prayers at respective holy sites nearby.

A wave of street attacks by Palestinians in Israel, Jerusalem and the Israeli-occupied West Bank since October 2015 has previously killed 37 Israelis and two American tourists. At least 242 Palestinians have died during the period of sporadic violence. Israel says at least 162 of the Palestinians killed had launched stabbing, shooting or car ramming attacks. Others
died during clashes and protests. Israel has accused the Palestinian leadership of inciting the violence. The Palestinian Authority, which exercises limited self-rule in the West Bank, denies incitement and charges that in many cases, Israel has used excessive force in thwarting attackers armed with rudimentary weapons.

Ignacio Gonzalez arrested in anticorruption operation by Tahnee Wright The former president of the Community of Madrid Ignacio Gonzalez has been arrested as part of an operation against corruption related to the management of the Canal de Isabel II. The arrest is part of an investigation by the Audiencia Nacional that has led to the arrest of 12 people linked to the previous Autonomous Administration (2012-2015) who allegedly diverted money from public funds for their own benefit, the court said in a note. The investigations, which are under secrecy, focus on crimes of prevarication, criminal organization, embezzlement, bribery, money laundering, fraud, document forgery and corruption in business, the Audiencia added. The proceedings began in 2016 as a result of the current regional administration, led by Cristina Cifuentes (also of the Popular Party) informing the Public Prosecutor's Office of irregularities with the public water management company. ‘We have zero tolerance against corruption and we will always collaborate with any judicial issue,’ Cifuentes told reporters Wednesday. Gonzalez, president of the Community of Madrid between 2012 and 2015, was provisionally suspended from militancy in the Popular Party, with which he currently had no public office. The Popular Party reiterates its rejection of any type of corruption, wherever it comes from and will take the necessary measures to stop any act that violates the law,’ the conservative group said in a press release.The police operation comes a day after it was announced that the President of the Government, Mariano Rajoy, must testify before the National Court in the trial against the Gurtel corruption plot that hit the Popular Party, contributing to the loss of millions of votes in the 2016 elections. ‘The PP explodes corruption on all sides, justice works," Socialist parliamentary spokesman Antonio Hernando said on Twitter. ‘The PP is crumbling by corruption and the community is changing since the PP has no majority,’ said the Citizens' spokesman at the Madrid Assembly Ignacio Aguado at a press conference.
16.82 per cent increase in Calpe tourism The Department of Tourism of Calpe is already analysing data recorded across the Easter period, primarily finding that visits to the Tourist Information Offices increased by 16.82 per cent on last year. By nationality, there is a strong increase in visits from the United Kingdom, France and Belgium whose tourists have doubled their visits to the Tourist Information Offices compared to 2016. This increase does not occur across the German tourist figures, which remain the same as last year. Councilor for Tourism, Jan Van Parijs, maintains that ‘the data recorded allows effective analysis to be made - the growing trend of British tourism is maintained despite Brexit, German tourism remains stagnant and despite the general belief that the tourists received across the Easter period are mainly of Spanish nationality, foreign tourism is also increasing across these dates.’

Spanish rental prices rise 8.8 per cent by Tahnee Wright The average price of rental housing in Spain rose 8.8 per cent in the first quarter of 2017 due to increasing demand, according to the rental price evolution report published on Wednesday by Idealista. The rise is due in part to a change in the trend of Spaniards, who have made renting their first housing option whilst the rental offering has not experienced a growth similar to that of its demand. Fernando Encinar, Head of Studies at Idealista commented – ‘one of the consequences of the collapse of the real estate bubble has been that the Spaniards have finally disposed of all the mantras that governed the market for decades, like the much vaunted 'renting is throwing money'.’ Idealista said that much of the demand comes from people unable to raise the standard deposit to purchase a property - about 30 per cent, according to the real estate portal - in addition to others who opt for rent ‘aware of the sacrifices and risks of signing a mortgage in the long term.’ Rental prices could continue to rise, according to Idealista forecasts, given the improvements in the economy and job creation prospects. The average national price per square metre stands at €8.9 per month. The Balearic Islands have registered the greatest increase in the ranking of autonomous communities and provinces, of 15.9 per cent. By autonomous communities, the second to record the highest increase is Madrid, with 5.1 per cent and the Canaries, with 5 per cent. By provinces, the Balearic Islands follow Palencia (+8.8 per cent) and Las Palmas (+7.6 per cent).The most expensive autonomy is Catalonia, at €13.9 per square metre and the province is Barcelona, at €15.7 per square metre. The cheapest community is Extremadura (€4.1/ m2) and the province is Jaen (€3.6/m2).

Denia, Calpe and Javea reduce unemployment by a mere four per cent in 12 months Despite the undisputed efforts of their town councils, in the last 12 months, none of the three large municipalities in the region have seen much of a reduction in their unemployment figures. The macroeconomic figures of both the Central Government and the Generalitat are extremely positive – showing economic recovery in the labour market. However, data collected by Servef shows that Denia, Calpe and Javea - despite being the most inhabited municipalities on the Marina Alta and also the most visited by tourists - have barely seen a dent in their unemployment figures. Comparing Servef figures of March last year and March this year, the three municipalities have averaged a reduction in unemployment of only four per cent. Denia saw the highest drop in unemployment figures at 8.1 per cent, however it has the highest number of unemployed residents in absolute terms – 4,201 in March 2016 and 3,858 this year. In Calpe and Javea, the downturn in unemployment is still very much stagnant. Calpe recorded 1,612 unemployed residents in March 2016 and 1,570 this year whilst Javea recorded 1,727 in March 2016 and 1,691 this year. These figures come although Semana Santa fell in March this year – which suggests had it have fallen in April, the figures would have been even worse. Despite all the efforts of the respective town councils to stabilise employment over the past 12 months – Denia was awarded its ‘Gastronomic City’ status and implemented an employment plan, Javea whole-heartedly embraced environmental and cultural tourism and Calpe campaigned to attract European winter tourists – the offices are left with little option but to head back to their drawing boards to look for further economic alternatives.

Spanish hospital offers nipple tattoos to breast cancer survivors
by Tahnee Wright Arms covered in red and green ink, tattoo artist Alvaro Quesada is hardly what cancer survivors expect at a Madrid infirmary, the first public hospital in Spain to offer nipple and areola tattooing. Yet his service of tattooing realisticlooking nipples onto women who have had their breasts reconstructed after mastectomies signals the final step of recovery from cancer - and women react with emotion to the process. ‘They leave crying and hugging me. This is therapy,’ said 32-year-old Quesada, who takes time out from his tattoo shop to attend patients at the hospital. Reconstruction can occur months, or even years, after breast cancer surgery with tissue expanders typically installed to stretch the skin and make room for a future implant. Creating
the nipple comes later and involves one more operation. Clutching a pale pink tattoo gun, Quesada creates the three-dimensional illusion of a nipple on a patient's reconstructed breast, mixing colours to mimic the natural shade of an areola.
Half-blind, Quesada offers his service free of charge. The national health service did not cover the cost of his false eye after he lost his left eye to a benign tumour. For many, a quick and relatively painless session marks the end of a chapter.

Homes for the over 60's empty Over fifty homes adapted for people over the age of sixty The 52 apartments are situated in specially prepared sites throughout the municipality and are designed for residents on low incomes who meet the qualifying criteria. Potential occupants should be above the age of 60 and be either receiving a pension or on a combined income of under 22,932 euros. The dwellings are in residential centres owned by the Valencian Government Housing Authority, who are responsible for nearly 400 such properties, which have rents between 105 euros and 196 euros per month depending on location. Maria Jose Salvador, the government housing minister explained that at present only 77% of the homes are occupied, leaving 22% unoccupied, of which, the majority are within the Alicante area. The apartments are normally around 40 square metres, with lounge, dining area, bathroom and one bedroom and are suitable for up to two people. They are designed for independent living, but are part of complexes with communal social areas for integration with neighbours and help to prevent the marginalization experienced by people as they get older. Some of them, for instance in La Nucia, are in sheltered accommodation with 24 hour support and care staff on duty. Thirty three of the properties are in the Pilar de Horadada district, in two properties close to each other. They share a complex with a home for younger people and a central building designed for communal use by residents. The remainder of the homes are distributed between San Vicente de Raspeig, where the rooms are adjacent to a cardiovascular department and have specialised care facilities, Benidorm and the aforementioned sheltered housing apartments in La Nucia.

Prince Harry opens up about mental health struggles
by Tahnee Wright Prince Harry sought counselling in his late twenties to help deal with the grief of losing his mother more than a decade earlier, he told the Telegraph newspaper. Harry, whose mother Diana died in a car crash in Paris in 1997 when he was just 12, said he had come ‘very close to a complete breakdown’ on several occasions after shutting down his emotions, impacting both his work and his personal life. ‘My way of dealing with it was sticking my head in the sand, refusing to ever think about my mum, because why would that help? It's only going to make you sad, it's not going to bring her back,’ he said in an interview published on Monday. ‘So, from an emotional side, I was like right, don't ever let your emotions be part of anything’. He said his older brother Prince William had encouraged him to seek help and he had been to see ‘a shrink’ several times. He also took up boxing to help deal with aggression after feeling he was ‘on the verge of punching someone’. ‘I started to have a few conversations and actually all of a sudden, all of this grief that
I have never processed started to come to the forefront and I was like, there is actually a lot of stuff here that I need to deal with,’ he said, adding that he had experienced two years of ‘total chaos’. The princes' mother Diana was married to heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles between 1981 and 1996, when the couple divorced. She was killed when the car she was in crashed while being chased by paparazzi on motorbikes. Harry, who is fifth in line to the throne, described at times facing anxiety during royal engagements but said he was now in a ‘good place’. He served in the British Army for 10 years, including two stints in Afghanistan and now works with several charities including supporting wounded soldiers. Along with William and William's wife Catherine, he also set up a mental health charity. ‘Because of the process I have been through over the past two and a half years, I’ve now been able to take my work seriously, been able to take my private life seriously as well and been able to put blood, sweat and tears into the things that really make a difference and things that I think will make a difference to everybody else,’ he said.
EU's food safety watchdog says pesticide residues remain low Food consumed in the European Union is largely free of pesticide residues or contains levels within legal limits, posing little or no risk to consumers, the region's food safety watchdog said in a recent report. In its annual monitoring report on pesticides in food, the European Food Safety Authority found 97 per cent of food samples collected in 2015 were within legal limits and just over 53 per cent were free of quantifiable residues. Foods tested included aubergines, bananas, broccoli, virgin olive oil, orange juice, peas, sweet peppers, table grapes, wheat, butter and eggs, EFSA said. A total of 84,341 samples were tested for residues of 774 pesticides. For products from countries within the EU and the European Economic Area, legal limits were exceeded in 1.7 per cent of samples, an increase of 0.1 per cent from the previous year. For organic foods, 99.3 per cent were residue-free or within legal limits.

Community clean by Tahnee Wright The City Council of Javea have announced an exciting community event as part of its year of Sustainable Tourism. On Sunday May 7 from 9.00am – 1.30pm, all members of the community are invited to take part in a huge coastal clean operation, joining social organisations such as the Red Cross, Proteccion Civil, the Javea Oceanographic Research Institute (IROX) and its Excursion Centre and tourism companies such as Javea Activa, Siesta Advisor, Antias and the diving centres Cabo la Nao, Port, Paradive, Scuba Diving, Diving Javea and La Rana. Volunteers will be deployed along the most emblematic points of the coast, through coves and caves from the Cova Tallada to the fishing boats at the southern end. Groups will be organised on a logistical basis – whilst some areas are relatively easy to access, others can only be accessed by kayak and in some areas, volunteers will be required to hold a diving licence. The City Council will provide all necessary cleaning materials and will invite all volunteers to enjoy a community meal thereafter to reward their efforts. The Local Police are supporting the operation and will be on hand in boats to transport the rubbish collected from the most inaccessible areas. The Tourism Technician, Carol Cholbi,
explained that her department will be in charge of coordinating all volunteers and they have prepared a guide – depending on whether volunteers would like to work on foot, by kayak, snorkelling or diving – setting out accessibility levels and recommendations. The Mayor of Javea and Head of Tourism, Jose Chulvi, has stressed how fortunate Javea is to have many associations ‘working constantly to improve our society and our environment’, and that the operation is designed not only to improve
the environment but to raise awareness about the need to be respectful. Chulvi also confirmed that Javea plans on leading a stream of respectful tourism and that in this regard, the City Council are working on a forum for sustainable Mediterranean destinations to be held in October. €350,000 to restore the tower of Les Caletes in Benidorm The central government has announced it will allocate €350,000 to the restoration works of the tower of Les Caletes in Benidorm and works to the cliff on which it sits, nestled in the natural park of the Sierra Gelada. The announcement was made on Wednesday morning as Government Delegate in the Community - Juan Carlos Moragues visited the site, accompanied by the Head of the Provincial Service of Coasts - Rosa de los Rios, the SubDelegate of the Government in the Province - Jose Miguel Saval and the Mayor of Benidorm, Toni Perez, as well as other councillors of the municipality. The restoration works, which have already begun through the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment, will save the sixteenth century watch tower from deterioration. The watch tower has been declared of Cultural Interest (BIC) and represents the oldest monument of the municipality of Benidorm that still remains partially standing. Project leaders have explained that the works are intended to preserve the integrity of the tower and its surroundings. The masonry that has detached from its walls will be preserved and the debris of its base will be repaired - the cliff on which it sits will be stabilised through the installation of steel bar anchors and stainless steel wire mesh. The works - which will include environmental and archaeological monitoring - will last for a period of three months, meaning, as Moragues said on Wednesday, ‘the tower can be enjoyed this summer in its finished state by residents and tourists alike.’ The Mayor of Benidorm has advanced that the restoration works to the tower and the cliff on which it sits will be accompanied by other municipal projects in the near future that will inject even more value in to the surroundings of the municipality.

The traditional festival is celebrated at a slightly different time every year – always culminating on the second Monday of Pasqua. The respective Departments of Culture and Fiestas of L'Alfas del Pi, Altea and La Nucia have organised the programme of events in an excel-
lent example of twinning between the towns and in collaboration with the Associacio 2on Centenari de l’Ermita de Sant Vicent, the Parish of La Nucía and the Comision Majorals d’Agost 2017, Penya L’Afalak-Rebels. The programme presents a huge array of events and activities for all to enjoy: dances, footraces, the 350th anniversary talk of the Sèquia Mare, children's activities, music, Pilota Valenciana, pilgrimage and mass. Javea square rendered hazardous The Fira de Pasqua de Javea was celebrated en masse on Sunday in the Placa de l'Esglesia. As hundreds of guests enjoyed the festivities, two large barbecues roared on and on Monday, business owners in the Placa de l'Esglesia came to open up to find the fat from the cooked meat had spilled all over the pavement tiles, rendering the square dangerous and much like an ice rink. A bar owner in the square alerted the police to the situation, who closed the area and called in Ferrovial. Ferrovial pressure washed the square twice but even after such efforts, there were still spots and stains from the barbecues, particularly on the walls of the Sant Bertomeu Church. The Fira de Pasqua has provoked criticism this year – the associations responsible for the barbecues should have covered the surrounding area to protect the pavement. The bars and restaurants in the square remained closed on Monday, losing out on hundreds of euros of takings.
Valencia region has the best ever Easter
Figures released on Tuesday by the Valencian Region Tourism Director, Francesc Colomer, show the community had the best Holy Week ever recorded. With Easter falling later in the year and also coinciding with a long, settled period of hot, sunny weather conditions, visitors flocked to the region in their droves. Hotels showed full occupancy throughout the week and when final figures were counted, they revealed a ten percent increase on the Easter period of 2016. Although, the numbers aren't totally comparable, as Easter fell much earlier in March last year, Colomer stressed the results are an endorsement of the collective efforts of everyone working within the tourist sector of the region. The statistics, which take into account both domestic and foreign visitors, also show Valencia jumped to third in the table in terms of most visited Spanish regions this year and overnight stays, hot on the heels of top two Andalucia and Catalonia. The community is fifth in terms of hotel overnight stays, with 28.2 million in the last year. Second to Catalonia in both overnight apartment stays at 10.4 million and also overnight campsite stays at 7.7 million. In terms of overnight villa stays by foreign visitors, Valencia sits in third position, but if domestic visitors are also taken into account, the region rises to second. Making the announcement to the Spanish press, Colomer said "we are on the right track and beginning to reap the fruits of what we have sown.'' ''The Valencian region offers a transverse tourism model bringing good value to people visiting our tourist destinations.'' Adding that the community has something to offer visitors in every season '' making it attractive every month of the year."

Time to get traditional in Finestrat by Tahnee Wright Mercat Gastronomic i Tradicional celebrations take place this weekend The historic centre of Finestrat will play host to the Mercat Gastronomic i Tradicional celebrations this weekend Saturday April 22 – Sunday April 23. Organised by the City Council of Finestrat in collaboration with Associacio de Dones and local company Ibero, the programme was presented earlier this week by the Mayor of Markets – Amelia Mayor, the President of Associacio de Dones – Gemma Llinares and craftsman and local businessman - Vicente Atienza. From Carrer Fonteta through to Carrer Forn Baix, the streets will be lined with more than 50 stalls offering natural products from Navarra, Baleares, Madrid, Andalusia, Catalonia and the Valencian Community itself, among other regions. Among all the assortment there will be cheeses from Mahin, Mallorcan Sobrasadas, Vic sausages, craft beers and demonstrations of old trades. ‘Visitors will be able to watch live ‘turron a la piedra’ demonstrations. There will also be workshops for esparto, forge, brass, a wood turner, crafting of paper and the display of an old loom, amongst many others.’ explained Vicente Atienza. Visitors won’t go home hungry as the Placa del Poble will transform into a display of gastronomic delicacies. On Saturday, local chefs
will demonstrate how to cook the typical paella of Finestrat – with chicken and chickpeas and on Sunday, the traditional ‘arros ambs fessols i naps’. Musical parades and theatrical performances for all the family will keep everyone entertained. On Saturday morning, Pep Gimeno Botifarra will present his Romanes de Cec through the streets of the town, followed by Dani Miquel, a popular Valencian children’s entertainer, adapting traditional songs and fusing together with rock, ska and samba. Free parking will be available throughout the town and the Tourist Information Office on the Placa del Poble will be open all weekend 9.00am – 3.00pm and 4.00pm – 8.00pm. March – a top-notch month for tourism in Benissa The month of March saw much movement in Benissa to promote tourism throughout the municipality. •La Mostra Gastronomica festival celebrated its tenth year. Javea U3A group makes history The latest meeting of Javea U3A’s History Group was a truly historic occasion as group leader Peter Atkinson gave the group’s 100th presentation since it was founded in 2005. Among the capacity audience at the Casa de Cultura in Javea old town to witness Peter’s presentation was founder leader Sally Wells, who ran the group in its first six years. The group has come a long way since those early days when Sally and husband Sam originally hosted a small gathering of enthusiasts in their own home. Peter reflected on the fact that his presentation, entitled ‘Moors and Christians: Conquest, Reconquest and Architectural Legacy’, was a ‘refurbished’ version of one he gave back in 2008, but it proved as appropriate now as it did when it was first given, especially as much of what was going on during those early conflicts is still going on today around the world.Peter’s presentation covered the period from the invasion of Iberia by Muslims from Morocco in 711 to the early 17th century, by which time Spain was back in the hands of the Christians. Peter suggested that during those intervening centuries there was ongoing intermittent conflict that was less about religion than material rewards involving power and land. Peter entertained the audience with his usual enthralling mix of well-researched information and humour, which ensured that none of the audience went away bored.He was given an enthusiastic round of applause and presented with a bottle of wine as a thank-you gift by member Mike Frost, who appropriately will be giving the group’s next presentation on Admiral Lord Nelson in May. Benidorm Palace welcomes Heather Small
Heather Small, English soul singer, best known for being the lead singer in the band M People will play to a packed Benidorm Palace on Sunday April 30. Small joined her first group, Hot House, while she was still a teenager. She was the studio singer voice of the re-recorded version of UK number 1 single ‘Ride on Time’ from Italo House Band Black Box. After a chance meeting with Manchester DJ Mike Pickering, formerly of Quando Quango, Small and her distinctive voice helped to sell over 10 million albums worldwide singing with his group M People. They had considerable success with songs such as ‘Moving on Up’ and ‘Search for the Hero’. Small has said that her major influence has been singer Elkie Brooks. Small’s debut solo album, Proud, was released in 2000. She was also a contestant in the British television show Strictly Come Dancing in 2008. Easter festivities Easter extravaganza with the BBC at the English Church Benitachell Bowls Club were blessed with lovely sunny weather on Sunday afternoon in which they enjoyed the Easter Sunday Lunch, including an Easter Bonnet Competition at their clubhouse. After members enjoyed a delicious meal, the Easter Bonnet Parade took place. The high standard of entries made for a particularly tough final decision for the judges. Everyone deserved to win for their efforts alone, but the first three winners of the competition were Lynda Warnes, Velia Wood and Pauline Griffiths whose bonnets were nothing less than works of art.The club came alive thereafter as Barry Peters provided the perfect musical backdrop to keep members up dancing all afternoon. An excellent time was had by all – well done to the competition winners!Benitachell Bowls Club is the only independent club on the Costa Blanca and is owned and run by the members themselves through a board of directors and the Club Captain, all of whom are responsible for the day-to-day running of the club.The club was opened on 20th June 1988 with some 150 titleholders (not all bowlers) and just two annual members. The club has gone from strength to strength over the last 26 years and currently has a bowling membership of just fewer than 200, comprising of titleholders, annual and temporary members.The club has 8 rinks, all of which are synthetic surfaced and is open 7 days a week for members to practice their skills and play in a variety of competitions, both ‘in house’ and open events.

‘Jimmy‘ and his friends on Levante beach
by Tahnee Wright On Good Friday, the church held a communion service in the morning followed by a time of fellowship over tea and coffee. On Saturday, members rejoiced in an hour-long praise service on the Levante beach near the Church. On this occassion one of the congregation brought along ‘Jimmy‘ and his friends, and entertained some children and their parents with his puppets. On the morning of Easter Sunday, some members joined the ‘Pinkstergemeente‘, a Dutch congregation for the annual Sunrise Service at the Cross overlooking Benidorm. Amongst the English Church congregation was a lady who lives in Alaska who has been visiting Benidorm for a few months. After a traditional english breakfast,
it was time for the Morning Service at 9.45am where the resurrection of christ from the dead was enthusiastically remembered. This was followed by a joint service at 4.00pm with the Skandinaviska Turistkyrkan (Scandinavian Tourist Church) with whom the English Church share the building. Pastor Lennart Larsson, a Norwegian living in Sweden played wowed the congregation as he sang a variety of beautiful gospel songs whilst the local English Church Pastor Alan Robertson was the preacher. In true English Church fashion, members rounded off the day with a fellowship meal at one of the many Chinese restaurants in Benidorm before each one went their seperate ways, having enjoyed a very full and satisfying weekend encouraging each one in his or her
faith in the Lord Jesus. The offering taken on this occasion will be included in a donation about to be sent to the Barnabas Fund who are involved in assisting persecuted Christians in many countries around the world but mainly in Africa and the Middle East. The English Church in Benidorm is a non-denominational, evangelical, and international fellowship just off the Levante Beach. Each week a warm welcome awaits everyone at the regular meetings which are held on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. There is also a coffeee morning each Wednesday from 10.30am to 12.00pm. Hundreds of Finestrat residents and tourists alike gathered on Monday in the Font del Moli in Finestrat to mark to occasion of the festividad de la Ereta. Organised by the Comissio de Festes La Saragata in collaboration with the Finestrat Council of Fiestas, the day was very much enjoyed by all members of the crowd.T here were plenty of Finestrat delicacies to simple throughout the day, provided by the Comissio de Festes – the collection from which will be churned back in to the organisation of the fiestas in August. The crowd sang and danced all afternoon to the sounds of Bip de Polop.

Belgians climb every mountain by Andy Mansell Belgium is famous for many things, beer, chocolate, moules et frites, Tin-Tin and Hercule Poirot amongst others, but mountain walking would not usually appear on that list, considering the country is one of the flattest in the world. Well, last week a group of 52 walkers from the flatlands of Belgium, proved that theory wrong on a visit to the beautiful crags and outcrops of the Northern Costa Blanca, where they spent a few days hiking amongst our mountains and valleys. The trip was organised by the Belgium Walking Federation in conjunction with local specialists, Outbound Adventures and tour company, TUI Belgium and was designed to give the group an insight into the varied terrain and scenery offered by our mountain ranges. The full six day itinerary was set up to showcase the amazing variety of hiking trails around the region, including mountain passes, coastal paths, reservoir walks and high peaks, with each day offering something different.Based in Cap Negret, Altea, the group were picked up from their hotel early in the morning and escorted to a different location each day. During the week of fine, warm spring sunshine, hikers were able to take advantage of the perfect hiking conditions
to walk the Puig Campana, Penon de Ifach, Guadalest Reservoir, Sierra Helada and the La Cala de Finestrat coastal path to Villayoyosa. The Belgiums walkers ranged in age from 45 to 80 and were split into two groups each day, depending on their fitness and mobility levels, before setting off with their experienced local guides.At the end of each walk, normally around 10km, the groups reconvened at local restaurants for lunch and a chance to share their experiences of the day. The restaurants were chosen for their scenic views of mountains and sea and for their authentic cuisine which included gazpacho, paella, gambas, mejillones and calamares, plus some local vino to wash it down and loosen the flemish tongues. The walkers have travelled all around Europe on walking holidays during the last ten years, including trips to the Greek Islands, Slovenia, Italy, Canary Islands and the Cape
Verde Islands, but for most of them, this was their first visit to the Costa Blanca region.The unanimous verdict from the group at the end of the week was a huge thumbs up all round. They loved the variety offered by the various walks and the changing landscapes, enjoyed the weather and delicious food and fell in love with Altea. Most agreed a future visit would definitely be on their agenda. The Federation of walkers in Belgium has thousands of walkers registered to their society, so we can expect more groups on our mountains in the future. by Tahnee Wright Notwithstanding the many serious issues currently facing the expatriate community in Spain, there is a large proportion determined to stay focused on why they opted to make the sunny state their home in the first place. One such group is the Free Spirits of the Marina Alta – a Harley Davidson enthusiast group of over 50 members. The English-speaking male and female group - made up of riders and passengers – enjoy a ride out at least every other weekend in the summer months, winding the forgotten country corners
and the cool coastal routes. The routes are well planned, with coffee and lunch stops on the way. On a recent ride, members met in Benissa, before heading through Benitachell via the Montgo mountain road (1st peak), then through Denia into the Orba Valley where they took a coffee stop at Bar Citrus in Orba. From Orba, they rode on to Castells de Castells through the valley, then up to top of Col de Rotes (2nd peak) via Tarbena. An obligatory group photo was taken at the top of the mountain before the group headed back down via Jalon onto Calpe for lunch at Grizzly's bar and restaurant. The Free Spirits in its current form
launched last January and the group and its rides are administered and regulated by five road captains. Members must own a Harley Davidson and of course, be able to evidence their corresponding licence and insurance. The Free Spirits are strong believers in giving back to the communities which they very much enjoy being a part of. Last year, the group raised an astonishing €6,000 from their ‘Biker Babe’ calendar alone – donating half to Make A Smile and half to the Gandia Preventorio Children’s Home. The City of Finestrat’s Department of Youth have extended the registration deadline for the Photoshop course in May.The course will be held from May 3 – June 5 and will focus on the basic concepts of the ever-popular digital photography software. The Councillor for Youth, Amelia Mayor, encourages the young people of Finestrat to take advantage of this opportunity ‘to learn the basic concepts of layers, photo retouching and editing images in a relaxed and fun environment.’ Students will begin in maneuvering their way around the software. They will deal with basic photo corrections, image resolution and size, colour adjustment, how to straighten, crop and repair zones with the ‘buffer’ tool. Students will also learn how to work with selections, layers, masks, typographic design, vector drawing techniques, advanced composition, video image editing and even 3D imaging, among other content. ‘Photoshop is a fundamental tool for most creative projects,’ said the councillor. ‘And we think this course is suitable for young people to get started on basic Photoshop concepts like layers, retouching and image editing, which can be very useful for the preparation of works and for expanding curriculum.’ Those interested in the course can register by visiting the Department of Youth (3rd floor, City Hall), sending an email – joventut@finestrat.org or sending a WhatsApp – 606 936 432. Helping the less fortunate in Javea

by Tahnee Wright Todos Juntos Javea was founded in 2011 by a small group of Dutch expats. Over the years, the charity has welcomed new faces and said goodbye to others and the board is now very much international, with Oscar Anton as President (Spanish) assisted by Christel Foerster (German), Marion Kenworthy, Jean Halse (both English), Marianne von Troill (Finnish) and Lene Myhere (Norwegian). Todos Juntos work tirelessly to raise funds for less fortunate families in Javea and helped 40 families in 2016 alone. ‘We feel very privileged to live in Javea - we have an excellent quality of life here and it is good to give something back to the community. We are all very aware of the problems that many families and individuals face.’ – Marion Kenworthy. Todos Juntos work in collaboration with Social Services, who are able to identify those families and individuals most in need - although in respect of dignity, the charity rarely get to know those they support.The funds raised by Todos Juntos go towards paying utility bills or buying essentials for the children for school, especially lunches. The charity used to purchase school books for the children but the system has since changed and they are now provided by the state. Todos Juntos raise funds through events – usually organising two or three major events throughout the year and receiving much appreciated altruistic support from local bands and businesses. For many years now, Concerts Costa Blanca have supported Todos Juntos and organised an evening at the stunning Palau de les Arts in Valencia to see an opera or, indeed as this year, a ballet. To date, Todos Juntos have raised almost €60,000 for those who need it most in Javea – a spectacular achievement for such a small group. Guardian Angels donate Mirador Challenge sponsorship to APASA APASA extend their greatest thanks to Julia Atkinson, of Moraira and the four other ladies in the Guardian Angels team who took part in the Mirador Challenge on April 2 – a 29 kilometre sponsored walk along the coastline of Javea. The ladies raised a fantastic sum of €565, which they donated to APASA. The 230 residents of the shelter are sure to enjoy the food and treats the funds will provide and give woofing thanks, too!

Oh to be in England I miss England. My friends in Spain look at me incredulously when I say that, but there it is.

As much as I enjoy our life here with the glorious weather, spectacular coastline and endless choice of good, reasonably priced eating establishments, I still hanker for the Mother country. There are not many subjects that the Princess and I disagree on, but the question of which domicile occupies the principal place in our hearts is one of them. We have therefore agreed to a small compromise because I now take a couple of weeks each year to visit the UK, staying with old friends, re-visiting places that hold pleasant memories for me, and often, just getting behind the wheel and seeing where the next country lane takes me. Not surprisingly, this frequently leads me to ancient buildings where painted signs swing in the breeze, and just so happen to be licenced to sell intoxicating beverages. I marvel at the local dialects I hear on my journeys. In such a small country and with a highly mobile work force, it is staggering that regional accents still flourish and a pride in the town or county of origin remains important to many people. I once overheard a conversation in the Cornish village of Polperro where two old boys were discussing a trip into England no less. One told the other that he had recently visited “Egzeder” which prompted the question: “Lykun didee?” Every two years a group of us who lived and worked on the beautiful islands of Bermuda during the 70’s, gather for a reunion. All British by birth, we now live in various locations across the globe and we meet in such places as California, Vancouver, Spain and this year in
Blighty where most still have family and friends. The venue is Stow-on-the-Wold in the delightful Cotswolds – the epitome of Englishness, albeit somewhat blighted by the presence of rich and infamous celebrities. It would be my first choice of home were it not for the neighbours. With characters such as Jeremy Clarkson and Damien Hurst on your doorstep, the likelihood of having your lawn ploughed up by an out of control Ferrari or finding a herd of cows preserved in formaldehyde in a nearby field, would be just too much. But I shall be content with my brief visit and return to Spain reinvigorated by my English ‘fix’. Until next year at least.

A few weeks ago a young 24 year old Spanish man was kicked to death outside a popular disco. Last year a British couple were killed by a bullet to each of them in the living room of their home. Both of these horrific crimes took place in and near to the beautiful village of Jalon in the province of Alicante, and popular with tourists for its wine and lovely almond valley walks. Which prompts the question ‘What’s going on?’ Let me make this quite clear, Jalon is not a cauldron of crime, but it is part of a growing epidemic of sadistic violence amongst ordinary people, especially teenagers and other young people, and not just in Spain or the UK but throughout Europe and the rest of the world. Knife warfare in schools and discos seems now to be commonplace, and we are constantly being told about bloody life-threatening brawls in public places such as on public transport and even in cinemas. So once again it beggars the question ‘Why?’ What has happened to the human race that so many of its young generation gloat over the thought of ramming a knife into anopponent’s ribs, smashing a skull with anything they can lay their hands on, or shattering a beer glass into a supporter’s face at a football match? I don’t know about you but even the very thought of all this sends a chill down my spine. But time and time again I ask myself what it is about these mindless creatures who have no respect for the lives of their fellow human beings. They are willing to kill the innocent for no reason at all, regardless of the consequences. So what are we to do about this horrific wave of murder which has claimed the lives of ordinary people like 24 year old Alejandro Pavia Flores from Villalonga and the two British expats Peter and Jean Tarsey? No doubt psychiatrists will suggest their own reasons for this madness that has descended upon us , and there is a great vocal element amongst the general public in the UK and, I suspect, also in Spain about how to deal with psychopathic youngsters that are out of control: ‘Lock ‘em up for life and throw the keys away!’ ‘Bring back National Service!’ , ‘ Bring back hanging!’. But no matter how emotional we feel, especially those poor relatives and friends of loved ones who have fallen victim to this murderous frenzy, surely the solution is not a return to the medieval punishment of the past, but in the case of youngsters who kill for kicks, let’s turn to those who should take responsibility for their kid’s behavior. If we punish anyone it should surely be the parents? Educate these people into what is right or wrong, and that if they close a blind eye to what their kids are getting up to, then they must be the ones who suffer the consequences, be it in fines, or taxes, or a lengthy prison sentence. I’ve talked quite a lot about youngsters, but we mustn’t forget that many of these brutal crimes are carried out by older offenders. I don’t know how many of you will have read my article a few weeks ago about the UK fugitives who are living amongst us in secret here in Spain, well let’s remember that some of these repugnant creatures are mindless middle-aged killers. But whoever they are, and wherever they come from, what they are committing is cold-blooded murder, murder most foul, and even though it is too late to help young Alejandro Pavia Flores and Peter and Jean Tarsey, it’s our duty to find a way to stop it. There are times when a few words explain things better than does a book. Theatre impresario Peter Ustinov drove the nail home when he said, “War is the terrorism of the rich; terrorism is the war of the poor.” Whilst urban terrorism dominates the headlines what has been described as ‘murder by government’ claimed 164 million lives during this past century. This appalling figure is blue-pencilled out of the public consciousness because, as Alexander Solzhenitsyn surmised, the perpetrators own the media. The figure of 164 million slaughtered by government is not a figure plucked from the air. This was the findings of the respected Journal of Peace Research based in Hawaii. The disclosure of researcher R. J Rummel in his Power, Genocide and Mass Murder (31 No. 1 1994) brings into stark relief governments insatiable appetite for human harvest. This appalling death toll was a consequence not of Islamic terrorism but of ‘legitimate laundered terrorism’ practiced primarily by Capitalist interests, Bolshevism and Mao tse Tung’s Communist reign of terror. There were also many murder fests in Africa, the Far East and Middle East. Another report reveals that the U.S government, aided by its allies, has been directly or indirectly responsible for over 30 million dead since 1945. Shamefully, mainstream media launders the endless conflicts as political, banking and corporate elites jostle for global control and influence. As one German politician put it, “media is the keyboard on which government plays.” Playwright George Bernard Shaw; ‘Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all other countries because you were born in it.” His comment is spot on and it is this foolish notion that makes us all slaves to duplicitous self-serving political elite who abuse our naiveté and our trust time after time. The reality is that the refugee crisis afflicting Europe and terrorism is a crisis caused by the political elite. The governing elite are not fighting terrorism; they are the terrorists. If duped NATO service personnel were really fighting terrorism then they would come home and oust their treacherous back-stabbing political elite. There will be no peace on earth until we decide enough is enough. The NATO West has no legitimacy in its stated intention to remove by sanctions and by force legitimate sovereign nations. We really must stop deluding ourselves that the overthrow of independent governments is in pursuit of our security.

Flowering arranging and afternoon tea with Jalon Valley Help Pepe’s Restaurant in Alcalali played host to a packed terrace on Monday April 10 as the ever enthusiastic and hardworking volunteers of Jalon Valley Help held a demonstration of flower arranging and afternoon tea. Jo Jeffrey kicked off the afternoon with an inspiring demonstration of flower arranging. Jo – a member of the National Association of Flower Arrangers - transformed a wicker container, two decorated boxes and a piece of dried palm leaf into a variety of beautiful arrangements – all filled with brightly coloured flowers and foliage supplied or acquired locally. As she was arranging, Jo also gave an interesting commentary on the history of tea and interspersed this with some funny anecdotes from her years as a demonstrator. Her final showpiece, which she called ‘Tea Dance’, was perfectly accompanied by music played by Bob Welham. Jo donated the arrangements she had created to the raffle, raising an outstanding €1,000 – which will help the charity take care of the needy and sick in the local area. In thanking everyone at the end of the afternoon, Elaine Horton, President of Jalon Valley Help, expressed her gratitude to the charity´s volunteers who had made the delicious sandwiches, provided a variety of yummy cakes and served those present with tea in china cups poured from a proper tea pot. Jalon Valley Help´s next charity event is the annual May Fayre which will be held in the Rastro Car Park Jalon on Sunday May 14 from 10.00am to 2.00pm.

Cyclists and Clunk, the rules

I know this is a subject that can cause a lot of upset but I really am at a loss. I have been told by various friends that cyclists, especially those that are in a club have the right of way on the roads. There are many different arguments to this of which I appreciate but if I am driving in the car and am on the roundabout, indicating left, surely the cyclists have to stop and give way. This however did not happen. As I was about to take the left exit, instead of 12 cyclists stopping at the white lines they carried straight on and we very nearly collided. I was then hurled abuse and lots of swear words but for the life of me I cannot see how I was in the wrong! What made it worse was my children were in the car and had to listen to their profanities. I understand that these cyclists are in training but I am convinced they would put safety over anything else. I have always encouraged my children to cycle and quite often go with them myself on the roads and as a driver I know the laws of the road and with this I teach my children to ride with awareness and safety for then all my hard work undone by a few inconsiderate cyclists. Is it just an ignorant few that disobey the rules and put people in danger or do all cyclists feel they have the monopoly of the roads? Irate driver, Benidorm

Rip off I was watching tv the other night, one of the English adverts for a well known supermarket came on, they are selling Easter eggs 3 for £10. Please could someone explain to me why the English Easter eggs over here are at least 7€ each. Buying and solving disputes online - 24,000 consumers used new European platform in first year While there are strong rules in place in the EU to protect consumers, in practice consumers sometimes encounter problems getting redress when their rights are violated, particularly cross border. When consumers have made their purchase online, they should also be able to solve such problems online. Be it a seller refusing to repair a defective laptop within the guarantee period, or a travel agent not willing to refund a ruined holiday, such disputes can be settled faster and cheaper online and outside the court, via an Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) platform, launched by the Commission on 15 February 2016. In its first year, over 24 000 consumer complaints were lodged. More than a third of the complaints concerned cross-border purchases within the EU. Most complaints were about clothing and footwear, airline tickets and information and communication technology goods. Examples • A consumer from Italy complained about a defective ICT product bought from an online trader in Belgium. The platform sent the complaint to the competent dispute resolution body in Belgium. As a result, the Italian consumer was reimbursed. • A consumer from Luxembourg complained about a car rented online from a trader in Greece. The platform sent the complaint to the competent dispute resolution body in Greece. The dispute was amicably settled within 60 days. The trader fully reimbursed the additional expenses incurred by the consumer. • The platform often also works as a channel of first contact between the parties and a solution is often found bilaterally without taking the complaint to a dispute resolution body. For example, A Belgian consumer had been complaining for months about a defective dryer to a Belgian trader, with no success. When the trader received the complaint via the platform, he contacted the consumer and offered to replace the dryer with a new one. Next steps The Commission will prepare a first detailed report on the functioning of the platform towards the end of 2017. It is also planning further activities in 2017 to engage more traders and to further promote the platform amongst consumers. The Commission will also further improve the platform's user-friendliness and monitor whether traders comply with their obligation to put a link to the platform on their website. Background The Online Dispute Resolution platform can be accessed in any of the EU's official languages. The platform channels disputes submitted to it to certified alternative dispute resolution bodies that respect binding quality requirements established at EU level. So far, 260 alternative dispute resolution (ADR) bodies are registered on the platform. To date, 27 Member States have communicated to the Commission that they have fully implemented the Directive on consumer ADR. 24 Member States have sent their national list of ADR entities. 27 Member States have designated their national ODR contact point. Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein will join the platform during this year.

Investment trends in six central Eastern European property markets Investment in central Eastern European (CEE) Real Estate in 2017 is likely to surpass a record-breaking 2016 year, according to a report published by Colliers International and CMS. The sources of investment flows into the CEE region are expected to remain diverse in 2017, with Asian and CEE investors becoming increasingly active in the real estate market. The report examines key trends in six Central Eastern European countries (Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Romania) since 2012 and looks ahead to 2017. In Q1 2017, preliminary real estate investment in the CEE-6 markets has seen a 41 per cent and 45 per cent increase compared with Q1 2016 and Q1 2015 respectively. Preliminary indications also suggest continued local investor activity in Hungary and the Czech Republic and the entry of Thai investors to Poland and Czech Republic.
‘The growing maturity of the CEE region may help combat the specific risks affecting Western Europe, specifically ’Brexit’ and its consequences which are not yet known but might even end up as a positive for CEE,’ says Mark Robinson, senior researcher, CEE, Colliers. Higher returns and solid prospects for rental growth in CEE are likely to encourage US and Western Europe capital flows to continue at a similar level to the €4.9bn reached in 2016. Western Europe remained the main source of investment in the CEE real estate market last year but marked shift took place in 2016 with South African (20 per cent), Asian (16 per cent) and CEE investments surpassing those from the G10. This is predicted to continue in 2017, with Asian and domestic/CEE sources continuing to drive new investment.As Asian investment increases in the real estate sector, this may result in more large portfolio type deals, matching or even exceeding last year’s results interest from Asian investors,
particularly in Poland and Hungary, has grown considerably, with total investments reaching €2bn in 2016.South Africa’s activity meanwhile reached a record level of €2.4bn in 2016. While 2017 might not match this, with over 10 of the domestic REITs committed to the CEE region either directly or indirectly, deals should still be executed. Cross-border and domestic flows have more than doubled in last five years, reaching €2.6bn in 2016. The Slovak and Czech markets were both the largest origins and destinations of CEE crossborder flow in 2011-16, while Hungary’s domestic flows have grown most rapidly in the recent period‘The further we get from 1989, the more developed the CEE markets become and the less reliant on outside investors we are - not
only in the real estate sector, but in the whole M&A market,’ says Wojciech Koczara, partner at CMS. ’The spread of Warranty & Indemnity insurance across the CEE markets is another sign of growing maturity in the region as well as the increased level of sophistication in the structuring of large real estate deals.’

I have been living in Benidorm for the last 10 years, having tried my hand at many things from karaoke host to Radio presenter I finally found my true place in this wonderful and diverse seaside town! I currently manage a fabulous bar in the Old Town, called Sensations, and guest DJ at People’s Night Club. On top of that, I am very proud to be a part of the committee that are responsible for Benidorm Pride, taking charge of the entertainment and staging of this wicked event! Enough about little old me! On everyone’s lips President of the United States, Donald Trump, has demanded that he rides with The Queen in a gold-plated carriage when he undertakes a State Visit to the UK later this year. Whether or not his request will be met is unknown, as are many details of the State Visit, which is expected to take place in October this year. When President Obama visited the UK on a State Visit, he chose not to ride in a carriage and instead opted for a low-key car, shunting the limelight and obvious risks. SECURITY ISSUES. Furthermore, some security experts say that a carriage is far less secure and leaves both The Queen and the President more prone to an attack than a bullet-proof car.

Free Hotel Accommodation at the Costa Narejos

The man behind the bull If you are planning a trip to Madrid over the next few months, you may like to include a visit to the Spanish National Museum of Decorative Art on your cultural agenda.
Until the end of October the venue will be exhibiting the work of the man responsible for creating perhaps the most iconic symbol of Spain throughout the World, Manolo Prieto. Not everyone in Spain, including the Spanish know Snr Prieto, but few are unfamiliar with his most famous design: the Osborne bull, whose silhouette can be seen standing proudly against the skyline of many of Spain’s major highways. Born in Puerto de Santa María, part of the sherry region of Andalucia in 1912, Prieto was a pioneer of graphic design in Spain. He was contracted by the Osborne sherry company in 1956 to come up with an image to advertise the company’s Veterano brandy, with 500 of his bulls eventually being erected on major National road throughout the country. He also applied his skills in campaigns for clients including state railway company Renfe, Spanish national

airline Iberia and Nestlé. The Osborne bull, however, remains his most famous creation and the design was chosen by the Promotion of Decorative Arts (FAD) in 2003 as the icon of Spain’s 20th century. In 1997, the country’s Supreme Court even raised the roadside bulls, which are roughly 14 meters in height, to 'National Symbol' status, excluding them from a law that prohibits billboards outside city limits. In addition, it is frequently emblazoned on national flags as well as on a range of Osborne approved souvenirs. Besides advertising, Prieto, who died in 1991, also designed 618 book covers, for a series called Novelas y Cuentas, over a period of 17 years from 1940–1957.
A concert for every season Last year, the interior design showroom of The Lifestyle Company in Javea hosted many music fans who attended a programme of concerts produced by Jessica’s Concerts. The programme returns for 2017 with something for everyone and concerts scheduled at the showroom every other month: April, June, September and November. Autumn date TBC Arensky Pianotrio will present classical masterpieces such as Meditation from Thais, le Cygne, Vocalise by Rachmaninoff, Salut d’Amour, Turkish March and the Mondschein sonata in a solo, duo and trio line-up. Winter date TBC (November) The last concert of the programme will take place in November - based on classic tangos by Piazolla, Pugliese and Gardel - the Gardel trio will accompany tango dance couple Matias Lorca and Silvina Sosa, together with the renowned Orlando Dibelo from Argentina. The pocket-sized Novelas y Cuentos literature series was sold in kiosks in the middle of last century. But although he was working within an ultra-conservative social framework, Prieto, a Communist Party militant, shunned the traditional advertising graphics of the period. He adopted techniques closer to the artistic vanguard that gave scope to his immense imagination and highlighted his talent for abstraction and for working with limited means, all of which make him relevant today.
Flying the St George Cross for charity Patriotic English residents and tourists in the Northern Costa Blanca will be able to dress up in their red and white outfits, fly the flag of St. George with pride, and raise some much needed funds for local charities, at the annual St. George's Day Fundraising party in Alfas Del Pi. The highly popular event takes place on Sunday April 23, at the clubhouse on the Almafra Campsite on the outskirts of Alfas del Pi and doors open at 12.00pm. Dress code for the party is of course red and white and participants are encouraged to be as patriotic as they like. There are several local bands, singers, entertainers and DJ's lined up to perform throughout the afternoon. The bar will be open all afternoon with a barbecue and food available. Kids are very welcome too and will have a play area designated for them. Anyone purchasing a ticket will be entered into a prize draw to win a Tablet and a tombola with prizes donated by local businesses will be held. There will also be a host of other fundraising activities. This year, all monies raised from the event will be shared between two local beneficiaries, the Alfaz Food Bank and the Busy Bees Charity. Last year's St George's Day Party was a huge success, with partygoers enjoying beautiful sunny weather and the fantastic atmosphere generated by the enthusiastic participants who filled the dance floor all day and created a sea of red and white. Over €4200 was raised last year, with more donations arriving later and as the event grows each year organisers are hopeful of beating the final total from 2016. Teulada Moraira short story competition The Teulada Town Hall in collaboration with the department for adult education has opened entries for its annual short story competition. The goal is to stimulate writing and reading, discover hidden talent for literature and arouse imagination. The story of this year´s contest must take place in one of four locations of Teulada Moraira suggested by the organisers: Calle Dalt, Plaza dels Porxes, Ampolla Beach or Torre Vigia at the Cap d’Or. The competition winner - chosen by staff of the department for adult education - will receive €100 in vouchers to be used at any of the local bookshops or stationers. Participants must be older than 16 and the story entries must be submitted no later than May 21 to fpa@teuladamoraira.org. Don´t forget to include your full name, date of birth, DNI number, address and phone number. The word limit is 300 words and the story must be written in Castellano or Valenciano. Spring Fair in Javea The Inn on the Green in Javea will host its Annual Spring Fair on Wednesday April 26 in aid of Make A Smile. Carol Meare will return with her fabulous pickles, jams and chutneys, Preeva Jewellery say they are stocking up especially for the event and of course, it wouldn’t be a Spring Fair without Ann Martin’s collection of cupcakes. Bargains for bookworms
The Original Charity Library will be holding a huge book sale at Iceland on Saturday April 22 from 10.00am to 4.00pm. Everyone is invited to browse the stalls and for their summer reads. There will be plenty to choose from, with hundreds of contemporary fiction books on sale at 4 books for €1 or 50 cents each. Also on offer will be a wide range of children’s books, cookery books, craft and lifestyle books as well as biographies and autobiographies. They only really make me focus even more deeply, despite the jokes, but my Guardian Angel is there with me and I feel protected and loved that he takes such good care of me. Penny S. Penny, I am delighted that nothing comes between you and your administering Guardian Angel. We were all assigned a Guardian Angel at birth but Angels tend to help those who need them and those that call their name. Something else, I expect, that your family could find to laugh at! Really, let’s laugh at those who refuse to understand you, because their view of life would be unacceptable to me too, and sad. If you do not believe in Angels then have respect for those who do, and do your own thing...go and believe in something else; if you can believe in anything other than yourself, that is!

Yo-yo dieting hikes death risks in overweight heart disease patients For overweight people with heart disease, trying and failing to lose weight may be more dangerous than not losing weight at all. A new retrospective study has concluded that patients whose weight fluctuates the most die twice as quickly or have twice the risk of heart attack or stroke compared to people who maintain a stable body weight. And their risk of developing diabetes grows by 78 per cent. Being overweight is already known to pose serious health risks. The new research says dropping the pounds and putting them back on again poses additional dangers. If you are an overweight person with heart disease who lost 20 pounds ‘you are worse off if you drop your weight and gain it back’ than if you didn't lose it in the first place, chief author Dr. Sripal Bangalore, an interventional cardiologist and associate professor of medicine at New York University's Langone Medical Center told Reuters Health. The study is saying, ‘If you're going to lose weight, do it right and you need to take it seriously,’ said Dr. Ira Ockene, a professor of medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, who was not connected with the research. Such yo-yo dieting, where a person's weight fluctuates repeatedly, is already known to be unhealthy in people without heart disease. The new study in the New England Journal of Medicine explored whether that was specifically true for people with coronary artery disease, where fatty deposits have built up in the blood vessels feeding the heart muscle. The researchers recycled data from 9,509 volunteers who were part of a Lipitor study published in 2005 and sponsored by Pfizer. After adjusting for various factors such as high blood pressure, smoking, race, gender, diabetes, cholesterol levels and treatment with Lipitor, the Bangalore team found that people whose weights fluctuated the most were 2.24
times more likely to die from any cause within about five years, 2.17 times more likely to have a heart attack and 2.36 times more likely to be hit with a stroke than people whose weights were the most stable. The dangers posed by shifting weight were least pronounced in people who had a normal weight to begin with. Ockene said people need to put weight loss in perspective. ‘Studies show people set unattainable goals. Heavy people say, 'I need to lose 40 pounds' and they set a goal that is largely unattainable. And when they lose 10 pounds they're disappointed. And they say, 'What the hell' and they just gain it back,’ he said. ‘But if you lose 10 pounds and keep it off, your diabetes will be better, your blood pressure will be better, your lipids will be better, a lot of things will be better. You don't need to lose 30 or 40 pounds,’ he said. ‘That's an important issue for people to understand.’ As a typical example of patients in the study whose weights fluctuated significantly, the researchers cited the case of a 53-year-old man whose weight went from 231 pounds to 244 pounds three months later, then dropped to 211 pounds eighteen months later before going up to 253 pounds after another 18 months had passed.

Turmeric health scare
Brightly coloured turmeric has been used in Indian, Asian and Moroccan cookery for centuries as an integral part of the spice mix of curries and other spicy dishes. Now, this rising star of the spice aisle has also developed a following among holistic wellness practitioners and the health conscious amongst us. However, it's safety is now in question following the death of a young San Diego woman, Jade Erick, who died after receiving a turmeric treatment intravenously as a treatment for severe eczema. NBC news in America, reported that the San Diego Medical Examiner’s Office ruled her death an accident. The American National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NIH) explains that turmeric has long been used in Ayurvedic medicine for breathing problems, pain, fatigue and rheumatism. Today, the spice is also used to help with inflammation, arthritis, stomach, skin and liver problems as well as cancer. A type of chemical named curcuminoid present in turmeric is thought to be the reason for its health benefits, especially with inflammation-related diseases. However, the NIH says this claim is not supported by strong studies. The organization does say that research indicates curcuminoids could reduce heart attacks in bypass patients after surgery, help with osteoarthritis pain (as well as ibuprofen) and decrease skin irritation. While generally viewed as safe, too much turmeric (as with anything) can have its dangers and certain medical conditions, like gallbladder problems or diabetes, can be exacerbated by the spice. Mixing it with other medications is not advisable. The safety of administering turmeric through an IV aren’t well known as the practice is less common. Mark Stengler, a naturopathic doctor who offers turmeric orally, told NBC News, “It hasn’t been well studied. It’s more theoretical, so it’s more investigational.” However, we should not stop using this flavourful spice in our curries and tagines, as like most things in life, a little bit of everything is good for you.

Study reveals autistic children have difficulty identifying facial expressions Scientists officially confirmed the longbelieved theory, that children with autism not only have a hard time reading emotions on people's faces, but often confuse them. Emotions of 'fear' and 'surprise' are often mistaken for each other as well as 'disgust' and 'anger'. Approximately one in 68 children has autism spectrum disorder (ASD), which includes autism as well as Asperger syndrome and other developmental disorders. It is more often diagnosed in boys than in girls by about five times. People with autism often have problems with social, emotional and communication skills. They might repeat certain behaviours and might not want change in their daily activities. Many people with autism also have different ways of learning, paying attention or reacting to things. For the study, conducted at the University of Bristol in the UK, researchers gave an online test of emotion recognition to 63 children and teens with autism and to 64 youth without the diagnosis. Participants saw 'happy', 'sad', 'surprised', 'disgusted', 'scared' and 'angry' facial expressions. Some faces were exaggerated and designed to be easy to read and others were subtle, designed to be more challenging to interpret.
The participants were around 11 years old on average and most of the children in the autism group were male, compared to about half of the children in the group without autism. The research team had expected to find a smaller difference between the groups in recognizing the exaggerated emotions. Instead, they found a bigger difference with more intense emotions, likely because children in both groups made similar errors in recognizing subtle feelings. This made it hard for researchers to detect clear differences between the children with and without autism. 'We found that, on average, young people with autism are a bit less accurate at recognising all expressions, not just the subtle ones,' said lead author Sarah Griffiths, of the University of Cambridge Autism Research Centre. 'The types of mistakes that children with autism make, like confusing 'scared' and 'surprised', are the same types of mistakes made by typically developing children. 'So, it's not just that children with autism interpret emotions completely differently, but they are more likely to make common misinterpretations.' The researchers noted that one limitation of the study was that many participants - about 30 per cent of the autism group - who started the online facial recognition test didn't finish it.
Still, previous brain imaging studies have found areas of the brain involved in decoding emotions and facial expressions are less active in people with autism, said Dr Geraldine Dawson, director of the Duke Centre for Autism in Durham, North Carolina. 'The good news is that we can help people with autism learn to interpret facial expressions,' said Dr Dawson, who wasn't involved in the study. 'Early behavioural intervention focuses on helping the young child with autism pay attention and respond appropriately to facial expressions. 'There are also training programs in which people with autism can be taught explicitly what each facial expression means and then practice these skills in real life settings.'

Samsung S8 pre-orders surpass S7's Pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy S8 smartphone have exceeded those of its predecessor S7, the firm's mobile chief said last week, suggesting many consumers are unphased by last year's Galaxy Note 7 fires. Strong initial demand for the S8 will be encouraging Samsung, who are recovering from one of the worst product safety failures in tech history, which ended in the Note 7's swift withdrawal. The new smartphone has received favourable reviews ahead of its release date in Korea, the United States and Canada on April 21. Some investors and analysts have even predicted a first-year sales record for the South Korean company. ‘It's still a bit early, but initial response to the pre-orders that have begun at various places across the world have been better than expected,’ mobile chief Koh Dong-jin said at an S8 media briefing. He said the S8 will be the safest Galaxy smartphone to date due to measures implemented to avoid the battery failures that caused some Note 7s to spontaneously combust. Analysts said strong S8 sales are likely to help Samsung to its best-ever quarterly profit in AprilJune, along with a booming memory chip market that is widely expected to deliver record revenue this year for the industry as a whole. Samsung has been working to restore investor trust as well as its reputation since the Note 7's withdrawal in October within two months of being on the market, losing out on $5.4 billion in profit. Senior executives told foreign media on the sidelines of the briefing that it will take time for Samsung's brand image to recover. They

manufacturers and transport operators have struck deals with providers of mobility services over the past decade or developed their own. Daimler launched car-sharing through its Car2Go subsidiary in 2008. Among many more recent deals, Opel parent General Motors invested $500 million in ride-hailing firm Lyft and PSA Group has backed several startups. BlaBlaCar allows car owners to cover their expenses but not make a profit - which shields it from regulatory costs and tax, further improving its appeal to passengers. Thanks to its potential scale, the Societe Generale ALD Automotive partnership adds the competitive clout of corporate leasing to BlaBlaCar’s already frugal peer-to-peer model. Monthly rates would start as low as €164 including maintenance for the entry-level Opel Corsa mini, providing drivers complete at least one ride-sharing trip per month. Mate, can I borrow your car? How many times have you asked one of your friends if they can lend you their car as a favour, because yours is off the road? The last time I borrowed a car from a mate, another driver clipped the wing mirror, shattering the glass, resulting in a total replacement of the whole mirror mechanism. I would be too embarrassed to ask him again. But not as embarrassed as a guy from Thailand who borrowed his mate’s million euro Lamborghini to show at a party and managed to write it off by crashing into a palm tree. He had two friends in the car and it became airborne as he drove up a steep part of the road. He then lost control of the supercar, clipped a motorbike and ploughed the vehicle into a palm tree at the side of the road at 3am on a Monday morning.

Driving Licence App On Uk Phones By 2018 UK Motorists could be allowed to have their driving licence on their phones by 2018, according to the government agency developing the plans. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) said a test system would be in place by September this year and that it would develop a “quick, easy and secure” service between April and March 2018. It wants the digital service to allow people to share and validate information with “trusted” third parties, although stressed that the new system will not replace existing plastic licences. The DVLA chief executive, Oliver Morley, revealed on Twitter in May 2016 that a prototype for a digital licence was in development. He tweeted a photo of an iPhone screen displaying the image of a licence in the Apple Pay app, with which people can use their phones to make payments and store documents such as boarding passes. Further details on the timetable for such a service have been included in the DVLA’s business plan for the next 12 months. It states: “During 2017/18 we will be developing a quick, easy and secure service to allow customers to view a representation of their driving licence on their smartphone. The driver will be in control of their data, and this can be used to share and validate driver information with trusted third parties through a secure website. This service will not replace the full driving licence. The digital licence service will only be available to driving licence holders who have authenticated themselves on gov.uk through the existing driving licence service. This service will be available 24/7, wherever the driver has a web connection. “We will develop a private beta service by September 2017.”

White is the new silver If you’ve never had the luxury of buying a brand spanking new, pristine, never been used car direct from the dealership, then you’re missing out on one of life’s great pleasures. That first time you sit behind the wheel of your new toy, touch the shiny metal and chrome surfaces, smell the new paint and leather (or 1970’s vinyl), turn the key, press the accelerator and drive away from the forecourt into the sunset, or probably straight into a traffic hold up is a feeling you never forget. Nowadays, tell someone you have a new car and, after establishing the make and model, the next question they’re likely to ask is: “What colour is it?” Sure, the petrolheads might ask about power output and torque, but to most of us what the car looks like is what’s really important. And a car’s colour says much more about the owner than the power under the bonnet. A white car? You have taste and elegance. Black? You’re sophisticated. If you drive a grey car, you don’t want to stand out, while blue projects stability, truthfulness and serenity, and red is a way of “flexing muscles on the road”. The top selling colour for new cars registered last year was white, according to figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. White as a colour for cars has had a remarkable turnaround in popularity in the last 12 years; in 2004, just 0.68 per cent of new cars were white, compared with 21.4 per cent in 2016. The trend is thought to be down to several factors, including the “Apple effect”, where car makers jumped on white being the colour for products that were trendy and futuristic, such as iphones and ipads. Another reason given is the fact that the sharper creases of car design now are better suited to white than the curvier shapes of the past. Then there’s the influence of aspirational models such as the VW GolfGTI, BMW M3 and Audi TT, which brought white back into the minds of buyers. And on a more cost conscious level, metallic hues almost always carry a price premium, whereas white has taken over from red as the colour that most often comes at no extra cost, making it particularly attractive to fleet operators. As proof that there are still people out there with some imagination when it comes to choosing the colour of their new car, brown, orange and mauve cars all made the top 10 list with increases in popularity of more than 20 per cent compared with 2014. Unusually, yellow has dropped right out of the top ten and silver has slipped right down the pecking order. With more and more manufactures offering wilder and vibrant colour combinations for their models such as the BMW Mini, Fiat 500 and Opel Adam, the top ten list for next year could be very different.

The ex-England midfielder's disastrous stay in charge at Valencia last season ended in dismissal after just 4 short months, with his win percentage of 18.8% being the worst in the club's history. Adams is a vice-president of Jiang Lizhang's DDMC Football Club Management Company, and last year he had a spell in China as sporting director for the Chinese Super League team which is owned by DDMC, Chongqing Dangdai Lifan. After leaving China, Adams moved to Spain midway through the current
season, working in a similar role for Granada with the aim of helping Jiang Lizhang construct his plans for the club's long-term future. Adams was the logical choice to deepen his role by becoming a parttime interim coach before, assumedly, the appointment of a long-term successor in the summer. "We inherited 106 players, of whom only 44 actually belong to Granada. "Our aim is to return Granada [Football Club] to Granada so the people here can identify fully with their team and their players. "I'm here to put the Spanish structure in place, with players who will belong to Granada CF and who will fight for Granada." said Adams after his appointment.
Forty football teams from twenty different clubs competed in this years International Benidorm Cup tournament, which took place in Benidorm and La Nucia over the Easter weekend. The three day competition saw six different winners for the six trophies up for grabs and teams from Benidorm claimed two of them. Benidorm Foundation were winners of the men's Benjamin cup, beating EFM Boadilla in the final played at the Antonio lopez Sports Centre. They were unable to repeat the feat in the cadet category, losing a derby match against local rivals City of Benidorm 2-0. DAV Santa Ana was named best club after beating Villayoyosa CF 3-2 in the youngest category. They also got to two more of the finals before losing to EMF Altea 6-7 on penalties in the juvenile final and Albacete Balompie in the Infant final. The girls final was won by CD Samper from Madrid, who beat Elche CF on penalties in the final. During the tournament 70 matches were played, split between the la Nucia and Benidorm venues. 422 goals were scored over the three days, an average of six per match. Teams from Madrid, Alicante Province, Ibiza, Albacete and England took part in the competition. The winning teams were DAV Santa Ana, CD Samper ( Both from Madrid ), Fundacion Benidorm, Benidorm City and EMF Altea ( Alicante Province ) and Albacete Balompie. Speaking after the event, organiser Fernando Brotons, of Tour Sport Promotions, said ''In addition to sporting prowess, the tournament promotes respect and sportsmanship and allows young people to enjoy their sport and co-exist with other sporting competitors''.

Button back as Alonso races Indy 500 Britain's Jenson Button looks set to replace Fernando Alonso at McLaren for the Monaco Grand Prix in May. Alonso will miss Monaco to race in the Indianapolis 500 with full support from McLaren and engine partner Honda. Although McLaren have yet to make an announcement, sources revealed, there is no other serious option than Button, 37, who is contracted to McLaren as a reserve driver and will race barring unexpected circumstances. The 2009 world champion retired from Formula 1 at the end of 2016 and has spent the winter in California training for Ironman triathlons, his long-time passion. He signed a contract with McLaren last autumn that committed him to replacing any race driver who was not able to take part in a grand prix this year. Fernando Alonso will miss the Monaco Grand Prix in May so he can race in the Indianapolis 500. The double world champion has the full approval and support of McLaren and engine partner Honda, who are having a difficult season in Formula 1. Alicante will welcome the world for the start of the Volvo Ocean Race 2017-18 when the Race Village opens on October 11. This year will be the fourth time Alicante has opened the action, and the third since the race set up its permanent HQ in the port. The start of the longest professional sporting event in the world brings people from far and wide to explore the Alicante Race Village, see the iconic Volvo Ocean 65 boats first hand. Over and above anything else the start of the 2017-18 edition of the race is not to be missed as it marks the beginning of nine months of storms, speed, life-changing stories, stunning imagery and nail-biting finishes in an epic journey around the world. This year will see the premiere of a new monotype designed by the Frenchman Guillaume Verdier and built under the direction of the Italian shipyard Persico. Verdier joins the design team of the Volvo Ocean Race and is already working with the race on the crucial decision as to whether the next boat will be a monotype or a multihull. The final decision will be announced on May 18 in Gothenburg, hometown of Volvo, the company owner and main sponsor of the race. This is only one of a series of important decisions to be taken in the coming weeks and will be announced in Gothenburg.Organisers have issued a statement saying May's announcement will form the most radical transformation of the Volvo Ocean Race since it was born in 1973 under the name of Whitbread Round the World Race.
