More than 1,500 local and national police will ensure the safety of Alicante and its visitors during Semana Santa, with special measures enforced. Spain has been on a terrorism alert level four since Christmas and in a meeting that took place this week between the Government Subdelegation with the different security forces, chaired by the subdelegate, Jose Miguel Saval, it was agreed to deploy throughout the province 4,311 agents of the National Police and Civil Guard. The subdelegate highlighted the importance of National Police and Civil Guard presence to ensure security during Semana Santa given the high numbers of people expected to be celebrating en masse in public areas. In the face of hypothetical terrorist threats, some agents will carry all the weapons and security elements required for an incident of this nature. The meeting was attended by the mayor of Alicante Security, Fernando Marcos, along with the head of the Local Police and members of the department of emergency management. Marcos confirmed that between Sunday April 9 and Sunday April 16, 776 extra officers, (489 regular service and 287 reinforcement) and 72 Civil Protection volunteers of the Alicante Local Police will be present across the city. Angry Mar Menor farmers gridlock Murcia city

Angry Mar Menor farmers bring chaos to Murcia City in protest over water shortages

by Andy Mansell A large convoy of more than 300 angry farmers from the Mar Menor and Cartagena campo area, travelling in tractors and agricultural vehicles, brought the centre of Murcia City to a complete standstill Wednesday and 24 hours later the chaos continued. The protestors, who arrived as dawn broke across the city, brought the demonstration to the city to highlight their ongoing battle with central government regarding water shortages on their drought ridden fields. Spokesperson for the Cartagena farmers, Vicente Carrion, alongside FECOAM President Santiago Martinez addressed the crowd and Spanish press giving a strong uncompromising message for the National government: ''We are not going to move until they give us solutions or a specific date to meet with the high officials of the Ministry. But they will have to come to Murcia before Wednesday, because we have already been to Madrid many times and have laughed many times at us'' he said. By midday, the Murcian capital was paralyzed with stationary traffic, but the protestors refused to move on. Roads into and out of the city were also blocked. Angry exchanges between the protestors and drivers, some of whom had been trapped in the blockade for hours, worsened the situation and riot police were brought in when the demonstrators pushed back a tram. Despite the tense atmosphere, the farmers played loud Easter music and Reggaeton to keep themselves entertained.

The demonstrators originally had a license from the local Agriculture Ministry to bring their protest to the capital ' for the protection of the Mar Menor and in defense of Agriculture' until 2.30pm. But it became obvious this was not going to happen. ''If the Minister, the Secretary of State or the Director General of Water does not come and offer us a comprehensive solution for the region of the Campo de Cartagena, we do not move from here'', said Martinez. ''We stayed to sleep and the tractors do not move''. Despite intervention from popular deputy Juan Guillamรณn, who attempted mediation with the farmers, a solution could not be found. ''The solutions have to arrive from Madrid "Said Guillamรณn. "We cannot tell people to go home without having achieved anything.'' In principle, and in order to move the tractors, the protesters only asked for a "date" for some senior Ministry official to move to Murcia and attend to farmers' requests. "It's only a few hours by train or plane and coming here," said Vicente Carriรณn. "It does not have to be today, it could be another day.'' As RTN went to press on Thursday, 24 hours later the demonstrators were still insitue and the worst traffic chaos in living memory continued to blockade Murcia City. One banner held by a man dressed as the grim reaper summed up the farmer's plight: 'My executioners are the multinationals distributing agricultural markets together with corrupt officials and itinerant politicians' Another one said 'I am the Mar Menor and they have killed me', 'I need water, I want to live'.

Torrevieja road widening hopes shattered by Andy Mansell Almost eleven years after plans were first submitted to widen an eight kilometre section of the N332 National Highway through Torrevieja the project is no nearer getting off the ground. The latest proposal has been rejected by the Ministry of Public Works on the grounds the plans included 13 major deficiencies and were submitted eight months late. Much of the N332 was widened during the initial project, but the eight kilometre stretch through the Torrevieja area has been constantly stalled. This has resulted in major vehicle congestion at busy times of the day and traffic at a standstill during major holiday periods such as Easter and the peak Summer months. There have also been an increase in collisions, some of which have had fatal consequences. Political wrangling and infighting has been blamed for the delays in the project, which was initiated when the PP were in control of the Torrevieja Town Hall in 2006. The Valencian Regional Government are responsible for submitting the plans to Central Government, but on this occasion the PP led Regional Government have rejected the plan put forward by the Socialist led Local Government. Mayor of Torrevieja, Jose Manuel Dolon, speaking to the press, expressed his desire to complete the project once and for all and has called for urgent meetings with all levels of government involved in the decision making process. sufficient land available for the construction of the highway and problems with accoustic impact on houses and businesses adjacent to the area of the road to be widened. Other deficiences were found in the drainage and flood defences of the proposed new section of road. Despite setting aside around a million euros per year to

fund the work, this latest setback means the project must go back to the drawing board whilst new plans are drawn up. In the meantime residents, businesses, workers, local drivers, delivery drivers, taxis, tourists and visitors to the area enter the upcoming Easter and Summer holiday seasons facing the same major disruption to their journeys as before.

Marcos recommends that those wishing to partake in the celebrations each evening access the city centre by either bus or TRAM to avoid congestion. The public transport route diversions will affect lines 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 8A, 8B, 09, 10, 12 and 13 as well as lines 21-22-23-24.

69-year-old man rescued from seven metre drop on Orihuela golf course Medics and firemen rushed to the aid of a 69year-old Danish golfer who had fallen down a 7-metredeep ravine on the Las Ramblas golf course at around 6.30pm last Friday. The man fell whilst playing golf and became trapped at the bottom of the ravine until he could be rescued with the help of a ladder truck and several firemen from Torrevieja. He was transported by an SAMU ambulance to the University Hospital of Torrevieja, conscious but having suffered multiple bruises and blow on the head and the arm. The Las Ramblas gold course is crossed, by the Barranco del Lobo and the River Nacimiento.

La Manga road widening project progressing A 2.4 million euro road widening and resurfacing programme close to La Manga on the Southern section of the Mar Menor is progressing well and should be complete by the scheduled finish date in October. Work on the section between KM 4 and KM 8 of the RM-314 road on the junction with the RM-12, La Manga dual carriageway to Atamaria sees over 4000 vehicles daily and over 1.5 million journeys every year and is seen by Regional Government as vital to the economy of the area. Projected work includes the creation of four new roundabouts, widening of cycle lanes, and the installation of 2 metre wide pavements to ensure the safety of pedestrians. The road widening will increase the width of the road by 5 metres from its current width of 6 metres to a new maximum of 11 metres.

Parents arrested for forcing daughter to adopt muslim rules

The San Javier girl refused to adopt the Islamic faith practiced by her strict parents

By Andy Mansell Two unnamed Moroccan Nationals from San Javier were arrested by Guardia Civil officers last week, for forcing their daughter to adhere to the muslim faith. According to the Guardia report, the girl was subjected to abuse, humiliation and threats by her parents aged 47 and 31, as they attempted to force her to follow their faith. She was banished from mixing with other teenagers as they refused to let her adopt any western practices or values. She suffered from constant verbal abuse and beatings from her parents for her refusal to accept the restrictions adopted by the Islamist faith.

Once the girl turned 18 and began a relationship with a non-muslim boy, the abuse and beatings worsened and she was banished from the family home. However, the abuse did not end, as the adults sent phone messages and coerced other members of the muslim community to harass her, throw objects and obstruct her path. She eventually had no option but to report her situation to the Guardia Civil who immediately arrested the protagonists. The Spanish authorities have made a clear intention to stop extremist activities in the country, particularly involving abuse of minors and have not ruled out further arrests. The parents remain in custody awaiting charges.

Thyme to be arrested At this time of year the hillsides and fields of our region are full of fresh herbs, particularly the ubuquitous Rosemary and Thyme. We are all guilty of pulling a few sprigs off to use in our cooking. Perhaps in a hearty stew or to flavour our Sunday roast. However few of us are aware that in the Murcia region, these herbs are a protected species and stealing them can lead to arrest. It is doubtful the police would arrest anyone for stealing a few leaves, but for one man who stole around 100k of the herbs from the Murcian countryside, the story was very different.The unnamed man was arrested on a routine document check by police on the RM-714 road in Caracava de La Cruz. On closer inspection, the police were amazed to discover the massive haul. The man admitted picking them from fields in the Calasparra municipality, where harvesting is restricted to those issued with permits and was arrested.Police have seen an increase in illegal harvesting for herbs recently as prices have risen sharply.The man was arrested for stealing 100 kilos of herbs from the Murcian countryside.

Red Cross seeks three Spanish missing in Colombia avalanche zone

By Tahnee Wright At least eight foreigners, three of them with Spanish citizenship, have been reported missing after an overflowing river caused an avalanche of water – killing at least 154 people and injuring 400 more in the city of Mocoa, Colombia last Friday. The incident, which was triggered by intense rainfall, has caused devastation in Mocoa, leaving over 300 dead so far with a significant number of people recorded as missing. President Juan Manuel Santos said in a statement in Bogota on Wednesday: ‘This morning 467 people have reported relatives as missing, of the 467 we have located 153, 119 alive and 34 unfortunately dead.’ The avalanche also wiped out Mocoa’s fresh water network, for which 20 water tankers are on their way from other cities. President Santos blamed climate change for triggering the avalanche, saying that the previous night’s rain was almost half the amount Mocoa normally receives in the entire month of March. With the rainy season in much of Colombia just beginning, he said local and national authorities need to redouble their efforts to prevent a similar tragedy. He said: ‘These rains are increasingly more intense, so we have to be ready.’ Adding that instead of sending supplies, Colombians should send donations so that families displaced by the tragedy can rebuild. The incident happened at around midnight, as many residents were in their homes sleeping. Witnesses felt buildings vibrate before an avalanche of water carrying mud and debris swept through, toppling homes and lifting trucks downstream. ‘We have about eight foreigners we are looking for, among them there is an Ecuadorian, a German and three Spaniards.’ said the coordinator for restoring family contacts of the Colombian Red Cross, John Freddy Castro. According to Castro, the ‘direct link to work with the embassies is the Chancellery and through them we can receive information about the addresses, probable locations where they would be... and on the ground, we started searching for these people.’ He added that the most important thing is to ‘re-establish the bond, find the person and tell them that their family is looking for them.’ ‘We are aware of three Spaniards who are wanted,’ said a consular spokesman, who declined to give more information on the case that, he explained, is being handled directly with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Madrid.

Recycle your electrical appliance in Alicante to win an iPhone 7 by Tahnee Wright Councillor for Environment, Víctor Dominguez, held a presentation in Las Cigarreras this week, showcasing the second edition of the campaign, ‘Recycle your devices’ – promoted by the Generalitat Valenciana and designed to bring awareness to residents over the importance of recycling electrical appliances. Two teams have been travelling across Alicante this week on bicycles with trailers, to advertise the initiative and collect any unwanted electrical appliances that residents might have had sitting in their homes. Dominguez explains that ‘this way guarantees the correct recycling of these appliances, which, in many cases, end up in conventional containers, generating a high degree of pollution into the environment’. On Monday, the teams visited the Zone Centro and the Mercado Central and on Tuesday, electrical appliances were collected in the streets of Raval Roig. On Wednesday, Ensanche-Diputacion neighbours saw the teams whizzing around on their bikes before they visited San Anton on Thursday. Casco Antiguo will be paid a visit today (Friday). Multi million dollar yacht anchors in bay of Mazarron Stunned beach goers enjoying the fine weather in La Azohia on the Costa Calida were treated to a rare sight last week when one of the world's largest yachts dropped anchor offshore for a couple of hours. Yacht A, owned by Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko, reportedly cost in the region of 600 million to build and had been docked in Cartagena since February for maintenance work. With masts 100 metres high and a length of 143 meters, the super yacht was visible from far along the coast. After her brief sojourn in the calm waters of Cala Tinoso, Yacht A, manned by a crew of 50, sailed South towards Gibraltar leaving the open mouthed beach lovers to continue with their sunbathing.

The world's first crowdfunded hospital opens in Aleppo This week, Hope Hospital, which was crowdfunded by people from all over the world opened to treat the children of Aleppo. by Tahnee Wright It started with a campaign spearheaded by CanDo last December, the People’s Convoy, which was transported hospital equipment and supplies from Chelsea & Westminster Hospital to Turkey’s border with Syria; a journey covering over 2,600 miles by land, through France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. Alongside partner organisations Across The Divide, Doctors Under Fire, Hand in Hand for Syria, Phoenix Foundation, The Syria Campaign, and UOSSM, CanDo raised £246,505 in just 14 days to rebuild the last children’s hospital that had been bombed out of action in Aleppo. The campaign resonated with public figures, humanitarian organisations and the public globally and resulted in raising a staggering £246,505 (270% of the fundraising target) in just 14 days, which in addition to rebuilding the hospital, also provided enough funding for six months of running costs. The convoy departed from Chelsea & Westminster Hospital in London on December 17, 2016 to a buzz of media attention. The heavy goods vehicle carrying the hospital equipment and supplies drove over 2,600 miles passing through France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria, before crossing Turkey and finally reaching Turkey’s border with Syria on January 2, 2017. With over 4,800 single donations mostly from the UK and USA, the People’s Convoy sent a strong message of solidarity to the Syrian doctors (the Independent Doctors Association) who

were rebuilding this children’s hospital for the seventh time after the six previous buildings had been bombed out of action. Inspired by the public display of generosity and solidarity the IDA decided to name the facility Hope Hospital. Dr Hatem from The Independent Doctors Association (IDA) said: ‘After evacuating from Aleppo our hearts ached, because we had been building the Children's Hospital in Aleppo for two years and then lost everything.’ He went on to say: ‘After we saw the People's Convoy, something rebuilt within ourselves. The hope returned to me when I realised that there are people thinking about us and supporting us. It meant the world knew what we were doing inside Aleppo: serving the children, the civilians. So, we began working hard to build the new children's hospital (Hope Hospital).’ CanDo’s Founder and CEO, Dr Rola Hallam also added ‘Hope Hospital’ is a clear victory for humanity. While it might seem like a small victory in the face of the continued adversity in Syria, it marks a significant milestone. From the thousands of supporters and the tens of organisations that endorsed the convoy, to the media supporters and the breath-taking resilience of the IDA team, the achievement is a celebration of the human spirit.’ The hospital will serve the Jarablus district (Northern Aleppo) community of 170,000, treating over 5,087 children each month - which is likely to grow as more communities become displaced from continued evacuations and news of the hospital spreads.

Nigel Farage accuses EU of ‘behaving like the mafia’ by Tahnee Wright Former UKIP leader Nigel Farage was heckled in the European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg on Wednesday after accusing MEPs of ‘behaving like the mafia’ over the conditions of Brexit. Farage was told to retract his ‘unacceptable’ remark by the Parliament's president, Italian Antonio Tajani and said that, in respect of national sensitivities, he would instead brand them ‘gangsters’. ‘You (the EU) have shown yourself with these demands to be vindictive, to be nasty. All I can say is thank goodness we’re leaving,’ he said.The row came as the Parliament heard a string of senior MEPs insist that Britain cannot enjoy ‘the same or better conditions’ in its relations with the European Union as full member states after Brexit. MEPs voted in favour of an eight-page resolution that lays

out the Parliament’s red lines on the coming Brexit negotiations, over which the Parliament has a veto. The resolution says the UK must honour ‘all its legal, financial and budgetary obligations’ up to and after its withdrawal, and threatens to exclude the UK from EU discussions on trade and ‘other policy areas’ if it begins talks with non-EU countries before leaving the bloc. The European Parliament's Brexit co-ordinator, Guy Verhofstadt, told MEPs that he expected the UK to return to the EU in the future, when a younger generation recognises withdrawal as ‘a loss of time, a waste of energy and a stupidity’.Leaders of the main groupings in the European Parliament said they wanted ‘fair and constructive’ talks with Britain during the twoyear withdrawal talks under Article 50, but insisted that divorce talks must come before

negotiations over future trade relations and that the UK will not be allowed to ‘cherry-pick’ favoured elements of EU membership to keep. The leader of the EPP group of centre-right MEPs, Germany's Manfred Weber, told the Parliament that the UK could not simply pick and choose areas such as security, scientific collaboration and free trade where it wanted to co-operate with the remaining 27 member states.‘I feel London thinks it will find the perfect deal and will take the positive points and leave the negative points,’ said Mr Weber. ‘This will not happen. Cherrypicking will not happen. ‘A state outside the EU cannot have the same or better conditions than a state inside the EU.’ Mr Weber said: ‘We are going to remain partners and friends but the UK has to accept the fact that there will be a tough negotiating position on the European side.’

Business boss not happy at state of beaches The leader of a Cartagena business association COEC has criticized the state of the beaches of the municipality ahead of the crucial Easter season. COEC President, Pedro Pablo Hernandez, demanded that all departments of local government act with "determination and agility and jointly coordinate all their efforts". He fears the state of some of the beaches projects a negative image of the coast to tourists arriving in this area of the coast over the Summer months. With Easter arriving late this year and the current warm weather conditions, he is worried that some of the coastline's beaches require regeneration, with half sunken boats and other debris still in evidence from the severe Winter storms. Hernández expressed concern about the evolution of the lagoon before the "imminent" arrival of summer, so he urges administrations to "intensify efforts" and work to ensure the improvement of its state and its evolution.

Alicante extreme marathon charity team in Benidorm A team of three Alicante extreme Marathon runners visited Benidorm this week as part of the build up to their participation in the Marathon des Sables, considered to be amongst the toughest footraces in the World.

by Andy Mansell Competitors in the event which starts on April 7 are required to cover 250 kilometers, in 6 stages across the Sahara desert. The three Ultra distance runners will have to cross the 250 kilometers carrying only backpacks with food for each day. The organisers will only provide their water, approximately 9 litres per day, tents for them to sleep in at night and logistic equipment allowing communication with the outside World, if necessary. Communal goat’s-hair Berber tents are pitched every night but, apart from that competitors have to take everything with them. Water is rationed and if runners exceed that ration they get a time penalty. All monies raised in sponsorship by the three atheletes, Francisco Javier López, Miguel Ángel Cayuela and Antonio García will be donated to the charity TDAH, which was set up for research, protection and help towards children suffering from Anaphy-

lactic Deficiency Disorder and Hyperactivity, Autism and Aspergers Syndrome. Ana Pellicer, Head of Sports from Benidorm Town Hall expressed her admiration for the selfish dedication of the Alicante trio: "If anyone needed a good excuse for sport, to do it for a cause of solidarity is doubly positive" she said, before going on to thank them on behalf of the whole corporation and sponsors. She wished them ''good luck for the race which is one of the hardest tests on the planet.'' The Marathon de Sables was first run in 1986 and for this 32nd race there are already 1,200 participants from 50 different nationalities registered. World Health Day by Tahnee Wright April 7 of each year marks the celebration of World Health Day. From its inception at the First Health Assembly in 1948 and since taking effect in 1950, the celebration has aimed to create awareness of a specific health theme to highlight a priority area of concern for the World Health Organization. Over the past 50 years this has brought to light important health issues such as mental health, maternal and child care and climate change. The celebration is marked by activities which extend beyond the day itself and serves as an opportunity to focus worldwide attention on these important aspects of global health. The theme of the 2017 World Health Day campaign is depression. What is depression?Depression is an illness characterized by persistent sadness and a loss of interest in activities that you normally enjoy, accompanied by an inability to carry out daily activities, for at least two weeks. In addition, people with depression normally have several of the following symptoms: a loss of energy; a change in appetite; sleeping more or less; anxiety; reduced concentration;

indecisiveness; restlessness; feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or hopelessness; and thoughts of self-harm or suicide. Depression is a common mental disorder that affects people of all ages, from all walks of life, in all countries. •The risk of becoming depressed is increased by poverty, unemployment, life events such as the death of a loved one or a relationship breakup, physical illness and problems caused by alcohol and drug use. •Depression causes mental anguish and can impact on people’s ability to carry out even the simplest everyday tasks, with sometimes devastating consequences for relationships with family and friends. •Untreated depression can prevent people from working and participating in family and community life. •At worst, depression can lead to suicide. •Depression can be effectively prevented and treated. Unemployment in Spain lowest for 7 years

Unemployment figures in Spain at their lowest for seven years

A report released earlier this week reveals unemployment in Spain dropped to it's lowest level for seven years. Last month, a March without Easter, the Social Security system registered an average increase of 161,752 contributors, an increase unseen for the third month of the year since 2001, according to Labor Ministry figures. Total unemployment also fell last month by 48,559 to 3.7 million, the biggest drop in a single month in the last eight years. Easter arrives late this year, but almost a third of the new jobs created in March are in the hospitality sector, followed by construction, which saw 17,471 positions created as the weather improves and work begins on new projects. March’s figures reflect the ongoing recovery of the Spanish labor market: over the last year, there has been a 3.49% increase in contributors to the Social Security, close to the increases detected in the spring of 2015, when the number rose above 3.5% year on year. Although the figures represent a positive view of the unemployment problems in Spain during recent years, it should be borne in mind that Spain is still largely creating unskilled, badly paid, temporary positions.

Four cruises will arrive in one day in Alicante Port in May

The Zona Volva will welcome the Horizon - a classic Pullmantur vessel that has undergone a recent refit, the Ventura – a grand-class cruise ship of the British P&O fleet, the Marina – 2011 edition vessel from the American

Oceania and the Jewel of the Seas – a radiance class Royal Caribbean gem. On what will be a historic day, the tourism and hospitality sector of Alicante is expected to see €700,000 in revenue. Excursions are planned throughout the city and the rest of the province and there are already 40 chartered buses scheduled. ‘We are talking about a historic opportunity for the city - it is proven that cruise-goers who disembark in a city like to return on vacation,’ says Balbi. According to research commissioned by Terminal Cruisses, a tourist

spends an average of €65 in destination and each crew member that go down to port spends an average of €25. Balbi said that ‘we are making preparations with the City Council so that everything goes smoothly.’ The cruise terminal of the Port of Alicante has will welcome 52 cruises with more than one hundred thousand tourists over the course of this year. ‘Alicante is specialising in receiving bigger boats and we are especially looking forward to the Volvo Ocean Race this autumn.’ adds Balbi.

Kids show in Los Alcazares This coming Saturday April 8, children in Los Alcazares will be treated to a spectacular show in the Town Hall Square.The Band of Mireia is a musical production in which Marieia, a young girl, along with her four friends, finds a very peculiar island in which everything is completely different from our world. The island is full of enchanted forests and the characters who live in it are responsible for keeping the four seasons perfectly synchronized in our world. Each of the four seasons has a missing element such as rain, wind and the children are able to participate in finding the missing elements.The musical spectacular composes 14 subjects, accompanied by a narration and dialogue that help to the develop the story. Although aimed at a younger audience, older children will enjoy the humour and catchy songs that accompany the dialogue. Writer and performer of the show, Mireia Montavez, 34, featured in the first season of the operacion Triunfo TV series and later performed in the musical Peter Pan. She has also performed in regular shows in the theme park Port Aventura. The entertainment begins at 12.30pm on Saturday April 8, in the Plaza de Ayuntamiento Los Alcazares. Torrevieja U3A Torrevieja U3A Military history group recently arranged a visit to the Archivo Historico Provincial de Alicante (Provincial Historical Archive of Alicante). The visit was organised by the group leader Felipe Lopez and the group members plus family and friends got together to visit and view the current exhibit on display about the Spanish Civil War and its effect on the city of Alicante. The history of Alicante during the Civil War is extensive and not well known. Alicante was the last town to fall to Franco’s Nationalist Army and the war ended shortly after its fall. A significant aspect of the exhibit is that it is related to the Republican side of the conflict, something that it is not always available. All members were really impressed and touched by the presentation and display, and the guide’s narrative, who also willingly shared memories of her own family’s struggle with this still sensitive topic for many Spaniards. They also had the opportunity to visit a section of the Archivo where the preservation and conservation process of old documents takes place and learned how books are treated and safeguarded for future generations. They also were allowed to visit the extensive archive where the books are catalogued and referenced for easy finding and access. The exhibit is open to the public until the end of June 2017. How to look like a millionaire A popular truism is that you are known by the company you keep’. I pondered this when walking with my companion we attracted pitying glances. Whilst I was reasonably attired my companion looked like a down and out. Wearing ill-fitting jeans and a jumper that had seen better days my friend was also in desperate need of a shave and haircut. Such a figure on entering a bank, especially a bank in a resort notorious for its ostentatious wealth, would normally cause unease. Yet, on my friend’s entry, a senior manager flattered and pandered to one of the richest men in a community where millionaires are ten a penny. The experience wasn’t at all unusual. Having met and befriended a number of loaded men I met only one who flaunted his wealth. On meeting that one exception I jested that he had parked his Rolls-Royce in my parking bay. In his riposte I found the CEO of a leading chain of retailing opticians as down to earth as my local grocer. I have an enduring friendship with a man whose property portfolio is likely valued at £20 million. He lives in a humble cottage and his only ambition is to walk his dog across the bleak Northumberland moors. Robert Burns was the inspiration behind the Irish pub theme phenomena. As a consequence my friend was a millionaire many times over but his lifestyle was as humble as a factory worker’s. The boss of the UK’s largest privately owned house building company was anything but pretentious.

Many people might like to give the impression that they’re wealthy. However, many rich men try hard to look just like us and they hate drawing attention to themselves. As I chatted with the CEO of Europe’s largest ship-fitters I remarked on the ordinariness of very wealthy men. He smiled: “such men don’t have anything to prove.”On two or three occasions wealthy friends confided that they envy me my simple life. True, this has not led to us swapping bank accounts. I don’t have a problem with that as the wealthiest of men come with much material, social and psychological baggage. Being poor I have enough hassle as it is without adding the burdens carried by multi-millionaires.

The tuneless wonder

A few nights ago I woke up with a start in bed singing ‘Ole Man River’. How or where it came from I have no idea, but the awful sound I was making was enough to send my two dogs into a real panic as they took refuge in their air raid shelter under the bed! A nightmare? Well it certainly was for anyone unfortunate enough to hear me. I think I can say with hand on heart that I could never sing a song that was immediately recognizable. Even when I was a kid at primary school my classmates and teachers alike called me a ‘Tuneless Wonder’, which was a little unkind don’t you think? The point of my telling you all this is that I have never understood how anyone could possibly imagine that they were the new Frank Sinatra or Michael Jackson or Shirley Bassey. In other words one of my pet hates is – Karaoke. This then is where I make enemies with those who live their lives entertaining in pubs or clubs hoping to be a new singing sensation. Now don’t get me wrong. I know very well that this is not the ambition of millions of people around the world who just want to have a fun night in their local pub or club. I love doing that myself. No. It’s what I call theprofessional karaokians who spoil everything. Go to any pub or club on a karaoke night and listen to the most terrible voices ruining some of the most beautiful songs that we all love so much. Of course there is always the chance that amongst the rough there could be the smooth, someone with real talent just waiting to be ‘discovered’. Let’s face it, some of our leading young entertainers came from pubs and have gone on to be stars of the future. But it’s the over confident Elvis Presley impersonators in their expensive silk flares that make ‘The Tuneless Wonder’ seem like a superstar. So who is responsible for this extraordinary innovation known as Karaoke? The Japanese! Yes they’re the culprits! It was back in the 1970’s when they first introduced those terrible machines that allows you to pre-record music as a background to you, the singer, providing the vocals. The Japanese word Karaoke is roughly translated as ‘empty orchestra’. Pity they didn’t find a word for ‘empty singer’! Anyway, who am I to be so cynical about something that millions of people around the world enjoy? ‘Perfect entertainment for all the family to singalong together, especially at Christmas’. That’s what I read on the side of the box on sale in a department store. All I can say is, if Christmas depends on Karaoke to keep the family together then thank God Christmas comes only once a year! Yes I know what you Karaoke fans are saying: ‘Who is this miserable old g**? Sounds more like Ebenezer Scrooge. ’You’re quite right, but I still believe Karaoke introduces some terrible sounds to our pub and club life. Shouting out songs instead of singing them is no way to get ‘discovered’. Amongst the National Cycling squad leaving Spain for the World track championships in Hong Kong later in the month, was Alejandro Martinez, 18, from San Vicente de Raspeig. Martinez joined team mates, Vicente Garcia de Mateos, Sebastián Mora, Eloy Teruel and Albert Torres, and the sprinters Helena Casas, Tania Calvo, José Moreno and Juan Peralta competing in the finals which take place from April 12 to 16. Other recently qualified cyclists, Gloria Rodríguez and Ana Usabiaga will join the squad on April 9. Speaking to the press before boarding the plane, the excited teenager said '' This will be the most anticipated moment of the

year for me.'' He added '' last year I fulfilled the dream of playing a World Cup in Switzerland in the junior category and now I am a week away in the full category. '' He learnt the news at a training camp in Mallorca. He said he was looking forward to the event, hoping to learn a lot and ''savor this unique moment”.Only last week, Martinez became the Spanish track champion at the Anoeta Velodrome in San Sebastian. Minutes before setting off for Hong Kong, he said, "I was very excited because a year ago I won as a junior and now I was able to repeat the victory in my first campaign as an elite cyclist".

The Ten O’Clock Cringe I don’t usually do critiques on TV shows, but somebody tell me why ITV decided to shift the almost iconic News at Ten and put it back half an hour in order to shovel in a 30minute piece of dross? I refer of course to The Nightly Show aka: Embarrassment Half Hour, where celebrities host their own show, which judging by the content, appears to have taken them completely by surprise It really does give the appearance that the so called script has been put together on the back of a fag packet and some of the celebrity guests have absolutely no idea why they are there or what they are supposed to do. Take this week. The resident host is Bradley Walsh; not everyone’s cup of tea, but I like him and in particular his handling of the popular The Chase quiz show. On Monday night a bemused Michael Bolton was wheeled on to the stage and it was obvious from the off, that he had no idea how he came to be there. He looked as confused as Adam on Mothering Sunday. Michael was presented with a girl from the almost hysterical audience (a permanent feature of the show) and was told that she had won a lunch date with him. Then whilst she grinned like a Cheshire cat, the poor man, now pale with stress, looked as if he was near to opening a vein and ending the nightmare. Also included in the show was the normally very funny Joe Pasquale, having a nipple piercing performed live. What? This was followed on Tuesday by Joe receiving an eye watering waxing to his rear end. Perhaps this is something he is familiar with and a clue to the origin of his trademark squeaky voice. Under such trying circumstances, Bradley just about held it together, as too did the excellent John Bishop in an earlier show. Other than that, we have had to endure the increasingly dreadful and self-obsessed David Walliams who seems to hit new depths of mediocrity every time he appears; Davina McCall and Dermot O’Leary, who really should stick to doing what they do best, and the obnoxious Gordon Ramsay – a man better known for his foul language than his cooking skills. Messrs Bishop and Walsh marginally excepted, a hodgepodge of ill conceived material presented by cringeworthy celebs. Sounds depressingly like a recipe for surefire success.

Further to Barry Dukes article, in the current RTN, we too have experienced the increase in mindless xenophobia in the UK. As expats living in Brittany we visited England last October to meet family and friends. (Left hand drive vehicle, french number plates ). On the M25 a works van overtook us sounding horn with 2 finger gesticulation. Again on the M25 another works van under no pressure from the rear to move over swung across into our lane immediately on passing causing us to brake sharply. There were other incidents too numerous to mention, one smashing our offside mirror. Just bad driving? We think not. We visited the UK pre Brexit and lived in UK till retirement at 65. Valenciano language troubles

I have recently moved to Spain. My children are attending our local Spanish school. Please could you explain why the schools in this area speak and learn in only the Valenicano language. I find it so difficult to help my children with their school work as I do not understand the language myself. Anywhere else in Spain all schools are taught in Castellano not Valenicano. I did not want my children going to an English private school I want them to learn the language quicker but I am finding it impossible to help them with all their homework. Sharon Moraira

Days gone by Gone are the days when children used to play outside on their bikes or just with a ball. I am an 80 year old woman, everywhere I go I see children sitting down playing on mobile phones or tablets. I think it’s a real shame how this generation has changed so much. EU businesses want closer collaboration with London post-brexit Two of Spain's largest companies announced new projects and further expansion in London last Thursday. Just a day after the UK Government began the formal process of withdrawing from the EU, Telefonica and Ferrovial made commitments to London, at an event organised by the Mayor of London's International Business Programme, held to promote greater links between London and Madrid. Wayra UK (part of Telefonica Open Future) unveiled plans to develop a new facility in North London, to help entrepreneurs in outer London pursue their start-up ideas. Backed by the GLA and Haringey Council, the hub will support around 10 digital start-ups per year. The project is also a collaboration with former England football legend Sol Campbell, who is keen to ensure that the development of tech expertise also benefits London's outer regions. Meanwhile, the Spanish infrastructure group Ferrovial announced the ‘Londoners' Lab’, a collaborative innovation programme focusing on solutions to improve day to day recycling in flats and multiple occupancy houses. The partnership between the GLA, Ferrovial Services, University College London and Future Cities Catapult will engage London residents directly to make them part of the solution and improve recycling rates. Many of the Spanish regions in 2017 have introduced legal changes affecting Tax laws. Inheritance and Gift Tax modifications are part of these changes. The Law 13/2016 of December 29, has changed the main Valencian Tax Law 13/1997. Until now, the Valencia Tax Laws foresaw a tax allowance of 75 per cent of the tax to be paid when the heirs belonged to groups one and two. For 2017, it has kept this allowance for heir’s belonging to group one, but for the heirs from group two, the allowance has been radically reduced

to approximately 50%. Spanish Gift Tax allowances for groups one and two no longer applies. I was fascinated this morning by what I saw on television. The government are very concerned about the runaway costs regarding the National Health in the UK. The expectations of this wonderful service are far too high for the amount of taxes that are paid by everybody. The government are in discussion regarding the situation of the exploitation by health tourists. I have often remarked on the comparison of Spain and the UK, where you do not get any medical treatment in Spain until you produce proof of eligibility or payment. Of course, this is very difficult to do in the UK, as there is no structure in place for personal identification, which in this day and age is crazy and not realistic. The other interesting factor is the number of appointments made for the prescriptions for painkillers, cold remedies, various ointments, celiac foods, Omega 3 (fish oil supplements) and injections for holidays, to name a few. All of which can be purchased far cheaper, at the chemist. No wonder the doctor surgeries are always so busy. I personally find it unbelievable. I am sure that when the National Health was first introduced, which must have been wonderful, where for the first time, people had free healthcare, this use of the system was never anticipated and is far in excess of what it can afford. I have often wondered why some people have questioned why private health in Spain does not cover all the medication, as either an in-patient or an out-patient. Private health insurance premiums in Spain are remarkably inexpensive compared to the UK and from where I sit,

they do a very good job and the Spanish government support them as they know that private patients take away a vast amount of stress and cost from the National health system. However, to be realistic, they are privately funded companies and therefore they need to make a profit. Covering the cost of unlimited, on-going medication and every treatment available is not viable. For this reason, the health insurance companies are unable to cover you for pre-existing conditions and this same rule applies to travel insurance, in most cases. The Spanish system can come to quite a shock to some people, as there are very few benefits available. You have to have paid into the system to be eligible to any entitlement, which are very limited in comparison to the UK. I find the continued discussions on television and in the papers regarding Brexit very daunting and to think that we have at least a further two years, where every word will be analysed and various people’s opinion will be sought. I for one, wish we were not in this position as the grass is never greener on the other side and I think the cost is going to be formidable in all kinds of ways. Manufacturing and export the goods to a huge market within Europe will cease if the UK comes out of the single market, and they will be left with a hole in their market place for quite some time and I cannot recall Hard Brexit ever being discussed at the time of the vote. Returning to Sound Advice, at long last it would appear, as far as Liberty Seguros are concerned, we are getting on top of the vast amount of claims we have had to handle this winter, especially in the Javea area.

I understand that there are many disappointed people with claims not being dealt with in the way they had expected, by all insurers. I pride myself on having a Claims Department, with a very experienced Spanish speaking administrator, Sarah, for assisting my clients as much as possible. Yes, it does not stop the frustration, especially with a consortium claim, as they do take extra time to resolve. But I am confident that everything that can be done is carried out as efficiently as possible. My company goes from strength to strength and I had to make some decisions regarding my Els Poblets office. Tina, our very hard working Sales Consultant, had a very good opportunity presented to her and her husband, of returning to the UK to their old business of running a country pub, which of course they grabbed with both hands. I wish them both the very best of luck. A decision was made to move the Renewals Department to Els Poblets, one of the reasons being that two staff members live in Oliva, and this of course, shortened their journey, which was an added bonus. The Renewals office in Javea is now the Administration Centre for the company. Any renewals in the Javea area can still be handled by any office, although you might fancy a trip to Els Poblets, which is a lovely village by the sea, with some very nice restaurants and cafes. It is for the increase in the value of land over a maximum period of twenty years, from when it is sold.

The value is adjusted by the percentage determined by each municipality, but will not exceed the following: • Up to 5 years: 3.7% • Up to 10 years: 3.5% • Up to 15 years: 3.2% • Up to 20 years: 3%

It is normally the seller who is obliged to pay this tax, however if the seller is a Non Resident and does not pay the plusvalia tax, the Spanish Tax office can make the purchaser pay it, instead. To calculate the Plusvalia Tax you must to take into account the value of the land at the time of the sale. This can be done by checking the IBI bills (SUMA – Council Tax).

If you would like to know how to calculate this tax, you can do the following:

Multiply the number of full year’s ownership from the date of the purchase, with a maximum of twenty years, and then applying this to the table of percentages mentioned above. The tax rate will be set by each municipality, but cannot exceed 30%. For Example: • Land value: 5,000 euros • Purchase Date: 01/06/2000 • Sale date: 30/05/2014 • Tax rate: 5,000 x (13 x 3.2)% x 30% = 5,000 x 41.6% x 30% = 624 euros

STUDIO32’s summer production arriving soon STUDIO32, the Costa Blanca’s leading amateur musical theatre company are now over halfway through rehearsals for their summer production of ‘Mack and Mabel’. Tickets are available now and are already selling fast. ‘Mack and Mabel’ is a true story, set in the period of the silent movies, starting in 1911 and ending in 1938. The role of Frank is played by Nick Morgan. Frank is working as a ‘gofer’ in Mack Sennett’s studio (someone who ‘goes for’ everything, such as props), but he dreams of becoming a successful screen writer and when new financial backers turn up at the film studios, Mack is only too keen to introduce Frank as ‘the finest writer, fresh from the New York Times’. Frank is also secretly in love with leading lady Mabel Normand, personified in his solo ‘When Mabel Comes In The Room’. But will his love be returned? Purchase a ticket to find out! This is Nick’s third show with Studio32, having joined last year within days of arriving in Spain. He is an accomplished dancer - including tap and ballet - and has many years’ experience in musical theatre in the UK. He recently played the spirit of Christmas Present in Studio32’s sell-out production of ‘A Christmas Carol’. The show contains songs including the number ‘Look what happened to Mabel’ which tells the story of Mabel’s rise to fame from a waitress in a small town to international movie star. That's the Benijofar spirit A Benijofar charity is set to benefit once again next month when the Actors Community Theatre Society brings the Noel Coward's classic, Blithe Spirit to the town's Cultural Centre. The Benijofar Crisis Appeal ( A.C.T.S ) has so far received €5000 in donations from the theatre groups previous two productions and proceeds from ticket sales of their latest performances will also go to the charity. Blithe Spirit has been entertaining audiences for over 60 years and this much anticipated production, in rehearsals now and directed by Ian Vallender will be the society's first of 2017. Charles Condomine (Tony Goddard) an author whose first wife Elvira (Robin Smith) has been dead for seven years has been reasonably happy with his second wife Ruth (Dianne Scott). To collect material for his book he invites the quirky Madame Arcarti, (Eileen Hamilton) a local medium, to conduct a séance at their home. Charity rock and roll night The Restaurante Don Calvito will play host to a rock and roll night next week in aid of Torrevieja Stroke Support. The event, which will take place next Wednesday April 12 from 7.00pm is not to be missed, featuring Danny Fisher and his outstanding Elvis tribute. Brits will devour a mouth-watering 18,304 sandwiches in their lifetime The average Brit will consume a mouth-watering 18,304 sandwiches in their lifetime, according to new research. A study into the nation’s lunchtime habits has confirmed the humble sandwich is still the UK’s favourite lunch, with the average Brit shelling out a whopping £48,339 on sandwiches over the course of their entire lives. In fact, a staggering 56 percent of Brits eat AT LEAST one sandwich per day – with over a third having exactly the same filling every day. The poll by Heinz found a BLT was the nation's most loved sandwich, with chicken mayo coming in as runner-up. Third in the list was bacon, accompanied with ketchup or brown sauce - followed by ham and cheese - and then cheese and pickle. The sandwich is said to have been invented back in the 18th century by John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, who famously ordered his valet to bring him ‘meat tucked

between two pieces of bread’. A spokesperson said: ‘These findings show Brits are very particular when it comes to their sandwiches – without a doubt it’s still our go-to option for lunch.’ ‘The fact that it’s so quick to make, cheap and you can pretty much have any filling you fancy makes it an obvious choice for school children, workers, busy mums and anyone on the go.’ The study found the perfect sandwich will consist of white bread with the crusts left on – only a high maintenance 14 per cent of Brits insisted on their crusts being cut off. It will also be cut diagonally in half, with as much salad as possible stuffed in. The typical, hungry Brit will devour their sandwich in just eight mouthfuls, taking just over six minutes to polish one off.

Hayfever season approaching Spain has around eight million people who suffer from hayfever to a level which requires treatment or medication, either prescribed by a doctor or bought over the counter. Figures show those whose condition worsens when the pollen count is high has risen from 22% to 33% over the last ten years. For hayfever sufferers, the start of spring invariably brings sneezing fits, stuffy noses, headaches, sore and runny eyes, especially in the south, north-east and centre of Spain. Olive trees, cypress and bananas are

among those which are most likely to spark allergic reactions, although fortunately for those on the Mediterranean, orange trees seem less of an aggravating factor. The pollen count is expected to be high over the next few weeks for banana trees, with Inland Murcia, Andalucía, Catalunya, Extremadura, Aragón and Madrid being the main affected areas. It's not all bad news for sufferers though, the Spanish Allergy Society (SEAIC) revealed

recently that last spring was much more intense in terms of pollen levels than the expected levels of Spring 2017. However for those living in the cities and provinces of Sevilla, Jaén, Madrid, Barcelona and Zaragoza, this may be cold comfort, as they are already dealing with the effects of very high pollen levels. Measured in grams per cubic metre of air, the worst count in the whole of Spain is in Madrid, at a whopping 2.32 kilos.

Unconventional Easter basket ideas Tired of the same old Easter baskets? Get crafty and put a fresh-as-spring spin on the classic container with these unique Easter basket ideas. Edible terrarium Make an Easter version of a terrarium. Fill Mason jars with a layer of chocolate rocks, followed by edible grass, sweets eggs and marshmallow bunnies. Glue the triangles to a strand of baker's twine and tie or glue the twine ends to the crate. Fill the box with gifts like wine, glasses and chocolate to give to friends and neighbours. Apply adhesive onto a hat box, place the torn pages on top of the wet adhesive and apply more adhesive over the pieces until the box is completely covered. Create a bee friendly space Keep honey bees from disappearing by creating a bee friendly garden using plants they love.

Worldwide honey bee stocks have been waning since 2004 because of a mystery illness called Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), a phenomenon in which worker bees from a beehive or European honey bee colony abruptly and inexplicably disappear. Bees are the prime pollinators of the planet. Since many of our pollinators are now scarce, we are dependent on the honey bee to pollinate our crops Pollination starts when a bee crawls around a plant blossom. The honey bee is dusted with pollen. Then the bee flies over to another blossom with the pollen in its hair. When the bee lands, the pollen falls onto this blossom’s stigma. Now a fruit, vegetable or other crop can grow. Even though other insects pollinate crops too, without the pollination from the honey bees there would be one third less crops in the world than there is now. Bees are looking for two things when they visit your garden: Nectar which is loaded with sugars and is a bee’s main source of energy and Pollen which provides a balanced diet of proteins and fats. They have good

colour vision to help them find flowers and the nectar and pollen they offer. Colours that attract bees are blue, purple, violet, white, and yellow. Help stop the decline of bees by planting your garden with all kinds of nectar-rich plants. Encourage them to visit a part of your yard or garden by planting a bee border or a bee garden, just as you would plant a butterfly garden. Put plants in full sun and in a sheltered place out of the wind. They do not like to be blown around when trying to land on flowers and also prefer flowers in sun rather than shade. One of the best plants you can use is lavender. Other plants that provide plenty of pollen and nectar include catnip, verbena, borage, toadflax, California poppy, hebe, weigela, scented geraniums and most herbs (Sage, rosemary, oregano, thyme, mint, etc.). Lastly, protect them from sprays or other insecticides or pesticides. If you must use a spray, try to use one that does not affect them and spray pesticides in the evening after they have returned to their hives.

New Suzuki Swift Suzukiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Swift is a rather nice looking supermini with a new model being released in June this year. Redesigned with a shorter wheelbase, but with more interior and luggage space. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s boot now has 264 litres of usable space, amazing for a small car these days! With a four cylinder 1.2 litre engine developing 89bhp and returning 65.7mpg, the base model gives great performance and economy. A 1 litre 3 cylinder turbo version pokes out 109bhp and 61.4mpg. 0-60mph in 11.9 seconds and 10.6 seconds for the turbo version is quite nippy for this class of car.

Wood you believe it? By Andy Mansell The Deux Cheveux or Citreon 2CV has become something of a classic since production stopped 27 years ago. I vividly remember owning a battered old red one in the early 90’s, which was as eccentric as it was unreliable. My partner refused to travel in it, accusing it of being a death trap and with a top speed approaching 50mph, it took ages to drive anywhere. In fact it once took me ten hours to drive from the Midlands to the Isle of Wight. I could have flown to Los Angeles quicker. But I loved the creaky, leaky, old girl and used to peel back the plastic hood, boasting about driving a cabriolet. When I occasionally managed to push the speedometer up, normally downhill, her front passenger windows would flap up and down like the ears of a cocker spaniel running along a windy beach. These days a restored model can fetch thousands of euros and it’s amazing how many you can still see on the roads of Spain. However, I guarantee you will never see one quite like the one Robillard, a retired French cabinet maker, has constructed. He has built himself a life size, fully functioning replica of a Citroën 2CV almost entirely of wood. The car, made of Touriane fruitwood, took him six years

to complete and is expected to pass its first technical inspection without a problem. The Frenchman has been working with wood since the age of 14, concentrating on constructing miniature replicas made of wood. However, this is the first time that he has made a full-scale working replica. He began the project in 2011 and the labour of love has taken six years to complete. The car runs on a genuine Citroën 2CV engine; its mechanical workings are not wooden and the windows are made of glass, but almost all other details have been completely carved out of wood. Robillard has put in extensive work to get the detailing right. He has neatly carved out the Citroën logo and chiseled out the grille to make it as close to the real thing as possible. The headlamps and other electrical equipment are fully functional, with electrical wiring done in the fashion of the real car. Talking about the motive behind his creation, Robillard said, “I wanted to make an object that remains after me. I would like this car to be exhibited one day in an art gallery.” Imagine popping out to wash and polish the car on a Saturday morning, picking up a bucket, sponge, chamois leather and a can of furniture polish.

FC Cartagena put pressure on leaders

FC Cartagena closed the gap on leaders La Hoya Lorca following a well-deserved 1-0 win over Rael Jaen last Sunday. The return to winning ways, after two defeats on the trot, puts them just three points behind lorca with six games still to play and cements their position in the promotion places.In a close contest against Jaen, a well taken goal just before half time by Michel Zabaco settled a tense game with very few chances for either team.Jaen came out stronger after the break and had their best chance to equalize but a good save from Marcos kept the home side in front.Cartagena came back into the game and began to dominate in midfield with Rivero and Jimenez putting in strong performances.They had a number of chances to increase their lead, but Garcia, Llorente, Rivero and Arturo all squandered good opportunities.In the end it was goalkeeper Marcos who saved the day with a couple of late saves preventing ten man Jaen equalizing.With Lorca only able to salvage a draw against Jumilla, Cartagena moved to within three points of their local rivals and put extra pressure on as the season reaches it's climactic last few weeks.With nearest promotion hopefulls Villanovense and Marbella both drawing, this win against Jaen gained extra significance and crowned a great weekend for the Albinegros.Next up for Cartagena this weekend is an away trip to Atletico Sanluqueno currently languishing second from bottom in danger of relegatio Coach Alberto Monteagudo is in no danger of underestimating their opponents who are desperate for points to stay in the division, but believes his team has a great chance of keeping the pressure on leaders Lorca.

Elche waterpolo still in frame Elche Water polo clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s promotion hopes to the National First Division, are out of their own hands after only picking up one point from their last three games. A close, but ultimately disappointing 9-10 defeat to Granada last weekend left them languishing in third spot, relying on other team's results in their quest to move up a division.After a great run of results left their promotion prospects high, a loss at Malaga and a draw against Navarra, followed by their latest loss have seen their advantage slip and left other teams with a better chance.The current standings are Montjuic ( on 51 points ), Malaga ( on 46 points ), Elche ( 45 points ) and Premia ( 44 points ) and with two games still to play, the best Elche can hope for is to win both of their remaining games and hope Malaga slip up.In a further complicated twist to the season, fourth placed Previa, still have to play both Malaga and Elche, so a win against both teams would see them promoted.On Saturday April 8 at 18.00h, Elche play leaders Montjuic, with a match against Previa to round the season off. Silver medal for Santa Pola windsurfer

Spanish Olympian, Ivan Pastor, from Santa Pola, won a Silver Medal in the Princess Sofia Trophy RS Class.The competition, now in it's 48th year takes place off Mallorca in the Bay of Palma and is one of the most prestigious events on the nautical Calendar.This year saw a rule change, where the winner of the open series of three boats went directly into the final. Pastor, in excellent form, won on day one and qualified immediately.He was unable to continue this into the final, but finished a creditable second to eventual winner, Pawel Tarnowski from Poland, with Korean Taehoon Lee taking the Bronze Medal position.A total of 646 boats and 833 sailors from 54 countries took part in the Princess SofĂ­a Trophy this year, with the majority of competitors happy with the new set of rule changes.Ivan pastor during his Silver Medal performance at the Princess Sofia Trophy in the Bay of Palma last weekend.
