The National Police have arrested 25 people and seized more than half a tonne of cocaine and â‚Ź200,000 in cash as a two-year undercover investigation has consummated, exposing the gang behind the 62 kilos of cocaine that was found washed up on the beaches of Denia and Javea in January. The investigation began in March 2015 when Agents of group XV of the Provincial Brigade of the Judicial Police of Madrid first became aware of the existence of two Colombian men bringing cocaine into Spain. The men, alongside connections in Belgium and Holland, oversaw the storage and distribution of the drug as well as the recruitment of others into the organisation. As the investigation progressed, it soon became apparent that the men were part of an extensive international criminal organisation, which had a structured and hierarchical framework. Together with units in Valencia, Tarragona and Barcelona, researchers were able to determine that the head of the organisation resided between Mexico, Colombia and Spain and had many individuals under his power to control the smuggling of the drug into Spain before it was sold on the streets. Nigel Farage accuses EU of ‘behaving like the mafia’ by Tahnee Wright Former UKIP leader Nigel Farage was heckled in the European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg on Wednesday after accusing MEPs of ‘behaving like the mafia’ over the conditions of Brexit. Farage was told to retract his ‘unacceptable’ remark by the Parliament's president, Italian Antonio Tajani and said that, in respect of national sensitivities, he would instead brand them ‘gangsters’. ‘You (the EU) have shown yourself with these demands to be vindictive, to be nasty. All I can say is thank goodness we’re leaving,’ he said.The row came as the Parliament heard a string of senior MEPs insist that Britain cannot enjoy ‘the same or better conditions’ in its relations with the European Union as full member states after Brexit. MEPs voted in favour of an eightpage resolution that lays out the Parliament’s red lines on the coming Brexit negotiations, over which the Parliament has a veto. The resolution says the UK must honour ‘all its legal, financial and budgetary obligations’ up to and after its withdrawal, and threatens to exclude the UK from EU discussions on trade and ‘other policy areas’ if it begins talks with non-EU countries before leaving the bloc. The European Parliament's Brexit coordinator, Guy Verhofstadt, told MEPs that he expected the UK to return to the EU in the future, when a younger gen-

The leader of the EPP group of centreright MEPs, Germany's Manfred Weber, told the Parliament that the UK could not simply pick and choose areas such
as security, scientific collaboration and free trade where it wanted to co-operate with the remaining 27 member states.‘I feel London thinks it will find the perfect deal and will take the positive points and leave the negative points,’ said Mr Weber. ‘This will not happen. Cherry-picking will not happen. ‘A state outside the EU cannot have the same or better conditions than a state inside the EU.’ Mr Weber said: ‘We are going to remain partners and friends but the UK has to accept the fact that there will be a tough negotiating position on the European side.’
Continued from front page Different individuals controlled transportation, storage, sending money to Colombia, obtaining vehicles, recruiting ‘screen men’ to rent villas and one was even responsible for the collection of debts owed to the organisation. The arrests closed the two-year investigation as agents became aware of new plans being formulated by the organisation in February this year, suspecting an imminent dispatch of cocaine. At the end of March, agents detected a greater movement of the ‘strong men’ of the organisation in Spain and found that a new delivery had indeed arrived. With assistance from the GOIT (Operative Group of Technical Interventions), they stopped several vehicles, seizing varying amounts of cocaine. Agents then went to a ship in the Madrid district of Villaverde where they found a suspicious amount of refractory bricks (used to build fireplaces and barbecues). As agents began to break the bricks, they found many to be hollow with cocaine hidden inside. As a result of the investigation, agents searched 28 houses in various provinces in Spain (4 in Madrid, 18 in Valencia and one in Guadalajara, Toledo, Alicante, Albacete, Tarragona and Sabadell) an industrial warehouse in Madrid and seized 20 cars. A total of 25 individuals have been arrested, 15 of whom have been imprisoned. The trial has revealed that the same organisation was responsible for the 62 kilos of cocaine that was found washed up on the beaches of Denia and Javea in January – a failed operation which saw the drug attached to floating drums from a merchant ship.

Benidorm police officers suspended over UK mans jail suicide
Two Spanish police officers have been suspended from duty for five days without pay for failing to prevent the suicide of Anthony Abbott, 36, who died within an hour of his arrest in his cell at Benidorm police station in October 2015. Abbott had been arrested after police were called to the Palm Beach Hotel to deal with a violent argument between him and his partner Catherine Corless. The father of two was taken into custody and left unsupervised in a cell for 18 minutes, whilst one police officer left his post unauthorised and another one failed to replace him. During these 18 minutes, Abbott used a blanket and bar to take his own life. The Spanish National Police authorities’ decision to suspend the two officers from duty for five days without pay is the least severe of a range of disciplinary actions stipulated by law. Spanish lawyer, María Ángeles Reyes Bernal, representing Catherine Corless has questioned the Police version of events and the fact the examining magistrate in Benidorm was never told about the unsupervised minutes Abbott spent in the police cell. ''How can a detainee tear a blanket into pieces to hang himself in a police station?” asks Bernal, who is preparing to claim “significant” damages from the Spanish Interior Ministry. Although the Spanish investigation into Abbott’s death was closed some time ago, the UK investigation remained open and on March 23 this year the coroner in Manchester concluded that Abbott had died from hanging. His report also described the Benidorm Police Department’s failure to improve their installations as “negligence” and “an important factor.” The coroner cited a report from the Spanish interior ministry, which referred to the suicide attempt of another detainee in a shared cell on March 26, 2014, using a strip of blanket – the same method Abbott employed. The Interior Ministry report proposals included putting surveillance cameras in the seven cells at the station, upgrading the doors to avoid “strips of blankets being introduced,” installing buzzers in the cells and repairing the alarm system. In 2015, a total of 324 government employees worked at the police station, but the report flagged the difficulty of monitoring the cells, which have a combined potential occupancy of 12 detainees. After 17 months, the UK investigation concludes that there is no evidence to suggest that the Benidorm Police Department acted on any of the Interior Ministry's recommendations. The UK report on Antony Abbott’s death, which will be sent to the British Foreign Minister, Boris Johnson, demands that measures be adopted to guarantee the security of detainees.

The world's first crowdfunded hospital opens in Aleppo This week, Hope Hospital, which was crowdfunded by people from all over the world opened to treat the children of Aleppo. by Tahnee Wright It started with a campaign spearheaded by CanDo last December, the People’s Convoy, which was transported hospital equipment and supplies from Chelsea & Westminster Hospital to Turkey’s border with Syria; a journey covering over 2,600 miles by land, through France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. Alongside partner organisations Across The Divide, Doctors Under Fire, Hand in Hand for Syria, Phoenix Foundation, The Syria Campaign, and UOSSM, CanDo raised £246,505 in just 14 days to rebuild the last children’s hospital that had been bombed out of action in Aleppo. The campaign resonated with public figures, humanitarian organisations and the public globally and resulted in raising a staggering £246,505 (270% of the fundraising target) in just 14 days, which in addition to rebuilding the hospital, also provided enough funding for six months of running costs. The convoy departed from Chelsea & Westminster Hospital in London on December 17, 2016 to a buzz of media attention. The heavy goods vehicle carrying the hospital equipment and supplies drove over 2,600 miles passing through France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria, before crossing Turkey and finally reaching Turkey’s border with Syria on January 2, 2017. With over 4,800 single donations mostly from the UK and USA, the People’s Convoy sent a strong message of solidarity to the Syrian doctors (the Independent Doctors Association) who
were rebuilding this children’s hospital for the seventh time after the six previous buildings had been bombed out of action. Inspired by the public display of generosity and solidarity the IDA decided to name the facility Hope Hospital. Dr Hatem from The Independent Doctors Association (IDA) said: ‘After evacuating from Aleppo our hearts ached, because we had been building the Children's Hospital in Aleppo for two years and then lost everything.’ He went on to say: ‘After we saw the People's Convoy, something rebuilt within ourselves. The hope returned to me when I realised that there are people thinking about us and supporting us. It meant the world knew what we were doing inside Aleppo: serving the children, the civilians. So, we began working hard to build the new children's hospital (Hope Hospital).’ CanDo’s Founder and CEO, Dr Rola Hallam also added ‘Hope Hospital’ is a clear victory for humanity. While it might seem like a small victory in the face of the continued adversity in Syria, it marks a significant milestone. From the thousands of supporters and the tens of organisations that endorsed the convoy, to the media supporters and the breath-taking resilience of the IDA team, the achievement is a celebration of the human spirit.’ The hospital will serve the Jarablus district (Northern Aleppo) community of 170,000, treating over 5,087 children each month - which is likely to grow as more communities become displaced from continued evacuations and news of the hospital spreads.

CREAMA subsidises work contracts for young people Easter health care in Javea Javea will see health care reinforced in the run up to and during Easter with the opening of the auxiliary clinic on Playa del Arenal. The councillor of Health of Javea, Pilar Zamora, has confirmed that the clinic will be open from Saturday 8 to Sunday 23 of April, from 10.00am to 6.00pm Monday to Friday (including public holidays) and from 10.00am to 3.00pm on Saturdays. The clinic will be closed on Sundays. The clinic will be run by independent staff who work in the local health centres of Javea and will be attended by a doctor and a nurse. Zamora expressed satisfaction over the reinforcement of the health service across Easter, especially given the two-week period sees a huge influx of tourists. She recalled that in the summer, the Consultorio del Arenal (located in a municipal area of Javea Park) offered an excellent service as it is situated in a comfortable position both for those in the Arenal neighbourhood and also for those in the urbanisations in the south of municipality.

CREAMA is running an initiative to stimulate jobs with contracts of indeterminate duration for qualified young people who are registered in the national system of the young people project of the Valencian Community. Any private company can benefit from the subsidies offered by CREAMA, even self-employed entrepreneurs. The person employed must be under a contract of indeterminate duration, over the age of 16 with a recognised qualification and be registered in the national system of the young people project of the Valencian Community. A subsidy for a full-time contract of indeterminate duration amounts to â‚Ź7,926.24 or â‚Ź9,907.80 for women workers or young disabled persons. A subsidy for a part-time contract of indeterminate duration with a minimum of 30 hours will be subsidised on a pro-rata basis. Natural gas reaches Albir
Work has begun on the project to bring natural gas to the Albir area
by Andy Mansell Work has begun to make natural gas available to residents in the Playa Albir area of Alfas in a project costing around 400,000 euros. The 7 km infrastructure network will cover the areas between Cami de la Mar, Avenida Albir and Cami Vell de Altea and will bring the supply to an estimated 5900 homes and businesses and
around a dozen Hotel establishments. Supply company Cegas has invested over 1.8 million euros in the construction of the network which will eventually cover nearly 14km throughout the Alfas del pi Muncipal area continuing in it's desire to make a major investment effort to extend natural gas to new towns and strengthen the distribution and transport network. Alfas del Pi Urban Planning Coun-
cilor Toni Such said: "The arrival of natural gas can imply an injection of competitiveness for companies, hotels, shops and restaurants in the municipality, being more economical and less polluting," He added that construction work on the project is expected to be completed by early May and households should be able to start using the natural gas within a few weeks of the completion date.
Finestrat gives go ahead to end historic flood problems Last week, Finestrat Town Hall gave the green light to plans which will end the historic flood problems affecting the town. The provisional plan to channel the Barranco de la cala to prevent future flooding will have a budget of 1.4 million euros from annual renewal funds and work will be carried out by Hydraqua, the current potable water and sewerage concessionaire. Spokesman for the local government team, Victor Darío Llinares, put forward the approval of the plans by stating: "Because of the urgent problems created by regular flooding, we are giving immediacy to a historical problem that puts the lives of people at risk every day.'' He explained that ''The council will solve the problem by its own means thanks to the agreement reached with Hydraqua. The proposal represents a total economic investment plan of € 2.7 million intended to alleviate the effects of flooding, especially in the La Cala area and also in the traditional historical centre" he continued. Adding that ''This investment does not mean that we will not request financial help from Central Government and the Generalitat to pay for a work of such magnitude because the waters that flow into that creek do not only come from Finestrat." The flash floods in the La Cala de Finestrat beachfront area have caused major damage in recent years and also been responsible for two fatalities in October 2011 and one during the heavy rains of last December.
Callosa to Guadalest road still affected by landslide Work continues to repair the main pipeline delivering drinking water to the town of Callosa d'en Sarria, which suffered serious damage in the heavy storms of December and January. The work began in February to repair the Font Major under the supervision of the technical services division. The intervention was necessary to create alternative conduits to supply drinking water to the municipality, along with the conduction of the Font de la Renyinosa And the Well of Onaer. The last two pipelines are currently guaranteeing the drinking water supply, due to the inactivity of the main pipeline of the Margeve which was also damaged by the recent rains. However, in view of the serious damage suffered by the Font Major due a landslide, the public company TRAGSA took over the work in mid-February thanks to a € 1.5 million grant received from the Conselleria of Agriculture which will also pay for the repair of the Raft of Onaer and it's diverse systems of irrigation for the municipality. The urgent work is set to last until the end of May and at the moment, traffic on the road connecting Callosa to Guadalest , passing through Font Major is regulated by temporary traffic lights. Callosa Town Hall have called for patience from regular road users whilst work is completed. Likewise pedestrians in the area are asked to stay clear of the landslide area until the debris has been cleared. The Mayor of Callosa d'en Sarrià, Josep Saval, and the Councilor for Technical Services, Alfonso Puigcerver, visited the works recently to check on their progress and ensure the work is on schedule for completion before the busy summer season begins.

Community action to protect Javea from forest fires

by Tahnee Wright The first action to take place as part of the City of Javea’s Local Forest Fire Prevention Plan was announced last week. The Local Police, in coordination with the techincal team of Medi XXI, are preparing an information campaign to provide residents with guidance on how to protect themselves and their homes in the event of a forest fire. The campaign – of particular importance for those living in integrated areas in agroforestry lands – will not only address permanent residents but also those who rent properties in the holiday season. The city have stressed that all must be aware that they are within real risk of fire and should be well prepared to face it should it arise. A guide is currently being drafted with basic instructions (from preventive gardening recommendations to advice on how to
improve safety in case of emergency) along with a questionnaire so that residents can easily assess the level of protection their home would afford against a hypothetical fire and thus know what measures to apply to improve safety. The collateral will be distributed by local estate agencies and a programme of talks will be scheduled for residents. In the city council meeting of last week - attended by excursionist clubs, security corporations and firefighting volunteers all insisted upon the importance of raising awareness of the ‘shared community responsibility’ in protecting the municipality from the effects of forest fires. The environmental advisory firm assisting with the campaign explained that it is now in the phase of collecting data (studying the latest fires and detecting the areas of highest risk) in order to be able to design the most effective guide.
Go ahead for Gorgos river improvement works The planned improvement works of the Pont de Triana, at the mouth of the river Gorgos in Javea, continue to advance in their progress. This week the provincial directorate of Costas gave its authorisation for the work, which affects an area of public sea land. The plenary unanimously approved the permit and will transfer all documentation to the Department of Environment, who will assess whether an environmental report is needed or whether the project can proceed straight to bidding stage. The project is budgeted at €567,382 and has a 55 per cent (€312,000) grant from the Diputacion de Alicante. The work itself will see the bridge reconstructed, extending it from 12 metres to 15 metres and repairs to the river’s structural damages after the floods of 2007. The session also saw the winding up of the general budget for 2016 - which closes again with an underspend of almost €5million - which will be allocated to the repayment of public debt.

Boulevard of greens by Andy Mansell The town hall of Alfaz del Pi is very proud of the communal parks it provides for residents, visitors and pets throughout it's municipal area. One of these green spaces, in the centre of Albir's Boulevard de Musicos, is undergoing its annual Spring clean-up this week with a budget of €12,000. Head of Parks, Gardens and Technical Services for the town, Óscar Pérez explained, “ This iniative is one of the two integral actions that are carried out every year in this green corridor, where there are about 120 plant species." Work will include, clearing of herbaceous borders, pruning of trees and shrubs, plus removal of dead palm trees stumps and will be completed in around two weeks. Perez said "We are continuing with the development of the main infrastructures of l'Albir to ensure we are ready for the Easter holidays.'' After the recent work undertaken to repair the damage caused to the beach area of Albir by the January storms, the Boulevard de Musicos is the department's most crucial project. After the Sierra Gelada Natural park, the Boulevard is considered to be the most important green space in the town and Perez stressed the work is "An action destined with the aim of maintenance and conservation of this green zone". for crushing to enable their re-use as natural fertilizer. They are also converted into natural protective covering for public parks and gardens. This recycling initiative ultimately fertilizes and allows the ground to maintain humidity. These environmental initiaves result in a considerable saving of water, whilst avoiding the use of fertilizer as the cover acts as a barrier between the soil and the trees, reducing health problems. The environment and Technical Ser-
vices department are responsible for the cleaning, disinsection and pruning of trees in the entire municipality of l'Alfàs del Pi and their director Perez described the Boulevard de Musicos as, '' A green area whose main purpose is to give out surpluses of water in periods of rain. Throughout its 800 meters of route there are planted more than 120 species, mostly tropical and agricultural, forming a green corridor by which the owners of dogs can walk freely with their pets.''
Pedreguer to be extra energy efficient Pedreguer announced last week that they will join forces with SOM ENERGIA, a cooperative energy company engaged in the production and marketing of energy from renewable sources. In exchange for the very modest joining fee of €100, Pedreguer - already recognised as a pioneering municipality for its environmental awareness - will receive the advice of SOM ENERGIA in respect of all municipal buildings and facilities. Advice will also be offered to all residents of the town and local social services employees (in this case so that they can pass ideas on to families struggling economically to help them to avoid falling into fuel poverty). The measure aims to materialise the support of Pedreguer, a new model focused on alternative energy generation, consumption of green power and the decentralising of electricity production. The intention of Pedreguer in the coming months is to study the electricity output of all municipal buildings and facilities, not only to survey what changes the energy model would benefit from long term, but also to achieve more immediate savings. The Department of Environment will hold a presentation in May, so that Pedreguer residents can find out more about the services offered through the partnership with SOM ENERGIA.
Amjasa contracts local Javea companies The municipal water company of Javea, Amjasa, held a meeting last week to award its annual maintenance contracts to three local companies. Works such as trenching, earthworks and pavement replacement, will, in some cases, require machinery/ expertise that Amjasa does not have. For this reason, after receive six proposals, they have awarded contracts to F. David, Exca-Javea and Excavaciones Mayte in respect of such works. The total budget for these works has been estimated at €400,000 for the year. The companies will be contracted on rotating shifts, meaning there will always be a provision in place as and when the work presents itself. Aside from these contracts, Amjasa will also go out to tender for the renovation works that are of greater scope. The last three contracts Amjasa awarded before these also went to local companies.

New ‘Beers and Bytes’ networking initiative for entrepreneurs in Javea by Tahnee Wright THE Department of Economic Development of the City Council of Javea in collaboration with the agency AFIC-CREAMA launched their new initiative promoting networking between entrepreneurs in Javea last week. The first ‘Beers and Bytes’ networking (or rather, ‘beachworking’ as the initiative has been fondly referred to) session was held last Wednesday at the Duplex Café Lounge on Calle Pescadors, Javea and brought together a group of entrepreneurs all with a desire to make contacts and share experiences and advice. Francesc Camprubi Martell, Head of the Department of Economic Development was responsible for breaking the ice presenting the initiative and the concept of ‘beachworking’ – promoting Javea’s unique offering of quality of life along with professional development opportunities, great for those for want to develop professionally without forfeiting the relaxed characteristic that comes with living in a Meditteranean town. Attendees at the session enjoyed presentations from three local Javea entrepreneurs who work in different sectors such as wine distribution (Casa del Vino), child care (Bombonets) and design (Deporte y Color). Benidorm Easter fair begins This weekend the streets of Calle Gambo and Martinez Alejos in Benidorm will be full of stalls offering traditional seasonal offerings to eager locals and tourists. The Fira de Pasqua has been introduced for the first time by the City Hall to partly compensate those affected by the heavy rains in December, which disrupted the traditional Christmas fiesta in mid-December. Somewhere in the region of 35 stalls will be in attendance to offer visitors plenty of choice with traditional Easter products at the top of the agenda. The councilor of Fiestas, Jesús Carrobles, and the president of the Commission, Antonio Vicente Fuster, launching the fiesta last week explained that the Fira, which will open on Saturday, April 8 at 11:30pm and will be set up in the streets Gambo and Martínez Alejos. Carrobles encouraged residents and visitors to "collaborate with the Comission. Enjoy and spend a different weekend" in this fair, and to "buy typical products of Benidorm and the region." President of the Commission, Fuster also pointed out that one of the products to be sold at the Fira will be "the traditional palms for the procession of the Palm Sunday." He also explained that the members of the commision have already begun the sale of these palms in two parts of the city: La Palmera and in front of Boca Calvari Museum. From Wednesday April 12 they will also have a point of sale in the street market.

Teulada Moraira councillor Laura Hillstead met with Elizabeth Bell MBE (Vice-Consul in Alicante) last week and presented the ‘MOTION REGARDING THE NECESSITY OF A BILATERAL AGREEMENT BETWEEN SPAIN AND GREAT BRITAIN GIVEN GREAT BRITAIN´S EXIT FROM THE EUROPEAN UNION (BREXIT)’, which had been approved during the plenary meeting of the Teulada Moraira council. The vice-consul was asked to give it to the British Ambassador to Spain, Simon Manley CMG. The councillor mentioned the obligation Teulada Moraira has to the British living in the municipality and to the people from Teulada Moraira living in Great Britain. During the meeting, they also talked about vital role volunteers play in the community and how people in need can best be helped. Teulada Moraira is working on a project called ‘volunteer bank’ and Hillstead explained the project and its future activities. The councillor as well as the Vice-Consul expressed their wish to continue with the good correlation, the work and the mutual support.

Alicante extreme marathon charity team in Benidorm A team of three Alicante extreme Marathon runners visited Benidorm this week as part of the build up to their participation in the Marathon des Sables, considered to be amongst the toughest footraces in the World.
by Andy Mansell Competitors in the event which starts on April 7 are required to cover 250 kilometers, in 6 stages across the Sahara desert. The three Ultra distance runners will have to cross the 250 kilometers carrying only backpacks with food for each day. The organisers will only provide their water, approximately 9 litres per day, tents for them to sleep in at night and logistic equipment allowing communication with the outside World, if necessary. Communal goat’s-hair Berber tents are pitched every night but, apart from that competitors have to take everything with them. Water is rationed and if runners exceed that ration they get a time penalty. All monies raised in sponsorship by the three atheletes, Francisco Javier López, Miguel Ángel Cayuela and Antonio García will be donated to the charity TDAH, which was set up for research, protection and help towards children suffering from Anaphy-
lactic Deficiency Disorder and Hyperactivity, Autism and Aspergers Syndrome. Ana Pellicer, Head of Sports from Benidorm Town Hall expressed her admiration for the selfish dedication of the Alicante trio: "If anyone needed a good excuse for sport, to do it for a cause of solidarity is doubly positive" she said, before going on to thank them on behalf of the whole corporation and sponsors. She wished them ''good luck for the race which is one of the hardest tests on the planet.'' The Marathon de Sables was first run in 1986 and for this 32nd race there are already 1,200 participants from 50 different nationalities registered. The super fit runners are expected to race in temperatures peaking well above 40º and the only Spaniard to win the race was Mònica Aguilera from Barcelona in 2010. No British man or woman has ever won the race.The three extreme runners will run 250 kilometres in six stages across the Sahara Desert.
€200,000 to boost employment in Pedreguer On March 1, the fifth plan of Promotion of Local Employment of the City of Pedreguer began. The aim of the initiative is to support local unemployed people in integrating back into the workplace, through training, work experience and improvement of employability opportunities. The plan will be fully funded by the City and has been allocated €200,000 from the 2017 budget. The plan, governed by les oficines del Servof and CREAMA, involves a total of 64 unemployed people registered in the municipality and will continue for 10 months. The workers are employed across a variety of public services – home help (six people), administrative support (four people) and agriculture, forestry and general services (54 people). All workers are employed under contract and paid corresponding to the minimum wage. The application period was open from January 30 to February 10, during which 156 applications were submitted. The selection process took place in February and decisions were made in consideration of those most affected by the unemployment crisis and those unemployed for the longest amount of time.

Silvia swan is actually a male by Andy Mansell Regular readers may remember our story about the lone swan of Altea who has been carrying a wing injury for the last few weeks. Local residents Chris and Melitta Hewitt had alerted RTN in the hope we could draw attention to the plight of the bird whom they nicknamed 'Silvia Swan'. Well it appears the Hewitt's weren't the only people concerned, as our story drew a number of interesting and informative email responses from other swan loving Altea citizens. Robert Allen was able to update us with the most accurate information about the swan's ongoing issues and current health problems. Apparently Silvia is actually a 17 year old male, who has lived alone since his mate was killed. Robert had been feeding the pair regularly before and has continued to feed the lone male. He told us that he has a particularly sweet tooth and a penchant for Maria biscuits. When the injury became apparent three weeks ago, the bird was treated by a specialist vet called in from Valencia, after being removed from the
small rivermouth near to the Tsunami Chiringuito by the Guardia Civil. The vet informed Robert that the wing was not actually broken, it was actually strapped up. However he is suffering from liver disease probably caused by his diet. White bread and Maria biscuits are not a natural food for swans. The specialist, along with a local vet and officials from the Guardia Civil's animal protection division El Seprona were looking into the prospect of moving the bird to join another swan at the Terra Natura park outside Benidorm. Instead the decision was made to deliver him back to his favourite 'home' location on the river and monitor his situation regularly. To help with his liver problems, the vet asked Robert to feed the swan with brown bread and chopped spinach instead of white bread and biscuits and he has tried to pass the information on to other people who feed him. He also asked us to let our readers know too. The new photo shows the swan looking fairly comfortable despite his ongoing health issues and we will continue to update our readers on his progress.

Calpe against colon cancer As the International Day Against Colon Cancer was celebrated last Friday, the Association Against Cancer of Calpe set up an information display on La Avenida de Ifach to raise awareness about this disease and how to prevent it. The Mayor of Calpe, Cesar Sanchez and the Mayor of Sanidad, Ana Perles, visited the display to support the work of the members of the Association Against Cancer.
Famous Dutch artist exhibits in Alfaz Art and Sculpture lovers in Alfas del Pi are in for a treat as famous Dutch artist Fredy E. Wubben has an exhibition in the town's Casa De Cultura up until Tuesday April 18. The exhibition of paintings and glass work are based on the relativity of life, but also place emphasis on its continuity, fluidity and displacement. In short, a poetic interpretation of life. Fredy E. Wubben was born in Holland and studied at the Free Academy in The Hague. Throughout his long artistic career he has won numerous awards in his home country, including the Talens Award for Painting (1954, Amsterdam) and the Geert Bouwmeester Artprice (Gouda, 1977). His work arises from the perplexity and duality of life. His pieces show a constant interaction between appearance and reality and the contrast between figurative and abstraction. He is famous for perfectly combining the fragility, subtly and delicate nature of glass with other harder, more inaccessible materials, such as natural wood, iron and bronze to create art pieces of depth and intensity. Fredy's work is currently present in international collections from Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, Switzerland, Spain and the United States, among other countries. The exhibition can be viewed in Alfas del Pi Casa De Cultura from Monday to Friday from 10:00am to 6:00pm and Saturdays from 10:00am to 2:00pm.

Wedding vows renewed on ruby anniversary by Andy Mansell Forty years ago Lyn & Wyndham Neish tied the knot on their wedding day and last weekend before a gathering of family and friends, the happy couple renewed their vows on their Ruby Wedding anniversary at the Albir Church of England. The service, officiated by Fr. Ray Andrews, was attended by many of their family and their three grandchildren, twins Wyndham & Rhianna together with younger Alonso. Afterwards everyone joined together for a delicious piece of Ruby wedding cake. The celebration formed part of the regular communion service that day, so the Church family were able to join in with the wonderful family gathering. A service of Holy Communion is held in Albir every Sunday at 9.45am with Easter services on: Palm Sunday 9th April - 9.45am, Good Friday 14th April 11.00am and Easter Sunday 16th April at 9.45am. Applications open for local aritsts in Javea The City of Javea has opened applications for artists who would like to exhibit their work in the two municipal spaces of el Centro de Artes Lambert and la Casa del Cable. The deadline for applications is May 5 and applications can be submitted at the Casa de la Cultura (Plaza de Baix, 6) Monday to Friday between 10.00am and 2.00pm and 5.00pm and 8.00pm (or alternatively sent by post). Applications are open to both individual and collective proposals, of work already produced or in production. Preference will be given to those artists that have not exhibited in either of the spaces within the past four years and to artists most local to Javea. Calpe Badminton Club makes a sporting donation

Last week, the Calpe Badminton Club donated €500 to the EMAUS association in Calpe to enable them to buy sports clothes and trainers for the children under their care. The cheque was presented to Patricia Juarez from EMAUS by members of the club´s committee. Patricia - who coordinates education, welfare and activities for the children at the home - was delighted by the donation which will be of tremendous help in encouraging the children with their sporting activities. The Calpe Badminton Club meets twice a week – Monday and Thursday mornings between 9.00am and 11.30am at the Pabellon de Deportes, Avda Pais Valencia, Calpe (the road where the Rastro is held on Wednesdays). Over 250 lots were sold and a total of €2,000 was raised on the day along with another €445 from the proceeds of the raffle and pre-sales. This money raised will be used to help the charity take care of the needy and sick in the local area. A big thank you from the charity goes to Alan the Auctioneer who assisted on the day and of course, the general public for their support in making the auction such a successful event. Moraira-Teulada U3A celebrating their 9th anniversary A walk through the years with the ever-expanding club. by Tahnee Wright The creation of Moraira-Teulada U3A was due mainly to the determination of the late Pamela Kershaw, who, at the time, was President of Moraira Ladies Luncheon Club and Sylvia Tatnell a British Councilor for Social Services on Teulada Council. On May 5, 2008 - a public meeting was held to gauge interest in the concept. Initially there was concern that no one would attend, however, more than 200 people arrived for that first exploratory meeting. The first official meeting was held in June 2008 and in November 2008 a permanent committee was elected at the first AGM. At the inaugural meeting, 244 joined the new association and the first groups were formed including Cookery and Travel. There are now more than 55 groups and the most popular are Dining Out, Wine Tasting, Travel, History & Art Lectures, Golf and Golden Oldies Music. Members usually enjoy dining out at different restaurants every month over two separate evenings as this is such a popular group. Wine Tasting is supported generously by various local wine traders and vineyards and the group leaders try to ensure they offer very good wines at less than €5 per bottle. The Travel Group has become an enormous enterprise with not only many varied trips throughout Spain but also holidays in interesting parts of France, Croatia and most recently, a wonderfully supported three-week trip to Cambodia and Vietnam.
The History & Art Lectures are usually held twice every month in the local theatre and are extremely popular. The Golf Group has been in existence for over seven years but formally became a Society in January 2016 and has seen a dramatic expansion of the Society from one Stableford and one Texas Scramble a month to three games a month, a Society Championship and involvement in local Costa Blanca league golf. The Golden Oldies, from small beginnings, now has a nine-piece band which entertains more than 100 members every month and opens the local Lions’ club’s annual Summer Concerts. Moraira-Teulada U3A is extremely fortunate to have many members willing to work as Group Leaders along with the General Committee. Within the Committee, there is also a Social Committee who organise both a summer and a winter Dinner Dance as well as other popular social gatherings.

A presentation was made on March 28 to the local Doctor at the Farmacia in Benichembla of two nebulizers. Prior to this generous donation, the Farmacia only had one nebulizer to service the whole village and in the winter – with so many people experiencing chest problems, when the nebulizer was in use (as was often the case), many had to travel to other Medical Centres in other villages. The new nebulisers will be of great help to the villagers and should relieve the necessity of travelling to other villages for treatment.
Huge success for the Red Cross Red Cross see many people in very challenging situations every day and last Saturday, the community showed their overwhelming support in aid of those less fortunate as the Red Cross Aprils Fools Day Quiz for Local Families in Need at Monroes in Pedreguer was attended en masse. Organised by Sandy Tsalikidis with Andre Le Maseurier taking to the mic as quizmaster, the evening was a huge success, raising €1,000 in total. €738 was raised on the night and Candy Wright of HELP Denia and Marina Alta announced that she would very generously make the difference up to €1,000. There were some excellent raffle prizes to be won – the new restaurant on the Arenal in Javea, La Bambula, donated 30 breakfasts and many other local businesses supported the event.

Local couple donate Golden anniversary gift In aid of HELP of Denia and Marina Alta. by Tahnee Wright Hilary and Chris Hare are very happily married and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They first met in 1964 when Hilary went to work at Chris´s fathers’ company. After dating for a short while, Chris had a trip to make which took him far away to Egypt but when he returned (after he ran out of money, he says!) they started dating again and in 1966 tied the knot. When Hilary and Chris decided to throw a party for friends and family to celebrate their Golden anniversary, they decided to do away with the traditional gift and asked their friends and family to instead donate to their very special collection… Hilary and Chris wanted to buy an electric hoist, a much-needed piece of medical support equipment for HELP of Denia and Marina Alta to loan out to patients. The electric hoist is used to move the infirm, injured and help to get people standing again when they are weak after surgery, moving them into their wheelchair. Hilary and Chris hope their contribution to HELP of Denia and Marina Alta will inspire other people to donate, as electric beds and hoists are very much in demand at HELP. HELP currently has 29 electric beds to lend and all of them are out with a waiting list. Oliva La Safor Lodge supports the Gandia Hospice On Tuesday March 21, the Charity Steward of Oliva La Safor, WBro Jim Jordan, made an urgent appeal for help from the Brethren of the Lodge to assist the residents of the Gandia Hospice. The need was for basic items which most of us take for granted including clothes, food and items for hygiene purposes. By the following Tuesday, the Brethren had collected and donated a huge pile of items for the hospice residents, including shirts, trousers, sweaters and much more. A large amount of long life foodstuffs such as rice, pasta, sugar and tinned goods were donated, along with much needed bathroom items such as soap, deodorant, razors and shaving creme. These items are so little to many yet so much to those in need. These items and many more will be donated to the Hospice in the coming weeks. Local charities on the Northern Costa Blanca are set to benefit from commissions made at a charity auction to be held later this month. The event is organised by the charity fundraising organisation Giving4Giving and they will be accepting donations and commissions from anyone interested in buying or selling at the auction from Wednesday April 12. The actual auction will be held on Friday April 21 at the Giving4Giving headquarters in Calle Villayosa 3, Edificio Bugatti no 80 on the Poligono Industrial Estate Alberca at 3.00pm (behind Vidal Supermarket on the CV70). This is their first auction and they are expecting to raise much needed funds for charities in the area. World Health Day by Tahnee Wright April 7 of each year marks the celebration of World Health Day. From its inception at the First Health Assembly in 1948 and since taking effect in 1950, the celebration has aimed to create awareness of a specific health theme to highlight a priority area of concern for the World Health Organization.Over the past 50 years this has brought to light important health issues such as mental health, maternal and child care and climate change. The celebration is marked by activities which extend beyond the day itself and serves as an opportunity to focus worldwide attention on these important aspects of global health.The theme of the 2017 World Health Day campaign is depression. What is depression?Depression is an illness characterized by persistent sadness and a loss of interest in activities that you normally enjoy, accompanied by an inability to carry out daily activities, for at least two weeks. In addition, people with depression normally have several of the following symptoms: a loss of energy; a change in appetite; sleeping more or less; anxiety; reduced concentration; indecisiveness; restlessness; feelings of worthlessness,
guilt, or hopelessness; and thoughts of self-harm or suicide. The Ten O-Clock Cringe I don’t usually do critiques on TV shows, but somebody tell me why ITV decided to shift the almost iconic News at Ten and put it back half an hour in order to shovel in a 30minute piece of dross? I refer of course to The Nightly Show aka: Embarrassment Half Hour, where celebrities host their own show, which judging by the content, appears to have taken them completely by surprise It really does give the appearance that the so called script has been put together on the back of a fag packet and some of the celebrity guests have absolutely no idea why they are there or what they are supposed to do. Take this week. The resident host is Bradley Walsh; not everyone’s cup of tea, but I like him and in particular his handling of the popular The Chase quiz show.

On Monday night a bemused Michael Bolton was wheeled on to the stage and it was obvious from the off, that he had no idea how he came to be there. He looked as confused as Adam on Mothering Sunday. Michael was presented with a girl from the almost hysterical audience (a permanent feature of the show) and was told that she had won a lunch date with him. Then whilst she grinned like a Cheshire cat, the poor man, now pale with stress, looked as if he was near to opening a vein and ending the nightmare. Also included in the show was the normally very funny Joe Pasquale, having a nipple piercing performed live. What? This was followed on Tuesday by Joe receiving an eye watering waxing to his rear end. Perhaps this is something he is familiar with and a clue to the origin

of his trademark squeaky voice. Under such trying circumstances, Bradley just about held it together, as too did the excellent John Bishop in an earlier show. Other than that, we have had to endure the increasingly dreadful and self-obsessed David Walliams who seems to hit new depths of mediocrity every time he appears; Davina McCall and Dermot O’Leary, who really should stick to doing what they do best, and the obnoxious Gordon Ramsay – a man better known for his foul language than his cooking skills. Messrs Bishop and Walsh marginally excepted, a hodgepodge of ill conceived material presented by cringeworthy celebs. Sounds depressingly like a recipe for surefire success.
A few nights ago I woke up with a start in bed singing ‘Ole Man River’. How or where it came from I have no idea, but the awful sound I was making was enough to send my two dogs into a real panic as they took refuge in their air raid shelter under the bed! A nightmare? Well it certainly was for anyone unfortunate enough to hear me. I think I can say with hand on heart that I could never sing a song that was immediately recognizable. Even when I was a kid at primary school my classmates and teachers alike called me a ‘Tuneless Wonder’, which was a little unkind don’t you think? The point of my telling you all this is that I have never understood how anyone could possibly imagine that they were the new Frank Sinatra or Michael Jackson or Shirley Bassey. In other words one of my pet hates is – Karaoke. This then is where I make enemies with those who live their lives entertaining in pubs or clubs hoping to be a new singing sensation. Now don’t get me wrong. I know very well that this is not the ambition of millions of people around the world who just want to have a fun night in their local pub or club. I love doing that myself. No. It’s what I call theprofessional karaokians who spoil everything. Go to any pub or club on a karaoke night and listen to the most terrible voices ruining some of the most beautiful songs that we all love so much. Of course there is always the chance that amongst the rough there could be the smooth, someone with real talent just waiting to be ‘discovered’. Let’s face it, some of our leading young entertainers came from pubs and have gone on to be stars of the future. But it’s the over confident Elvis Presley impersonators in their expensive silk flares that make ‘The Tuneless Wonder’ seem like a superstar. So who is responsible for this extraordinary innovation known as Karaoke? The Japanese! Yes they’re the culprits! It was back in the 1970’s when they first introduced those terrible machines that allows you to pre-record music as a background to you, the singer, providing the vocals. The Japanese word Karaoke is roughly translated as ‘empty orchestra’. Pity they didn’t find a word for ‘empty singer’! Anyway, who am I to be so cynical about something that millions of people around the world enjoy? ‘Perfect entertainment for all the family to singalong together, especially at Christmas’. That’s what I read on the side of the box on sale in a department store. All I can say is, if Christmas depends on Karaoke to keep the family together then thank God Christmas comes only once a year! Yes I know what you Karaoke fans are saying: ‘Who is this miserable old g**? Sounds more like Ebenezer Scrooge. ’You’re quite right, but I still believe Karaoke introduces some terrible sounds to our pub and club life. Shouting out songs instead of singing them is no way to get ‘discovered’. How to look like a millionaire A popular truism is that you are known by the company you keep’. I pondered this when walking with my companion we attracted pitying glances. Whilst I was reasonably attired my companion looked like a down and out. Wearing ill-fitting jeans and a jumper that had seen better days my friend was also in desperate need of a shave and haircut. Such a figure on entering a bank, especially a bank in a resort notorious for its ostentatious wealth, would normally cause unease. Yet, on my friend’s entry, a senior manager flattered and pandered to one of the richest men in a community where millionaires are ten a penny. The experience wasn’t at all unusual. Having met and befriended a number of loaded men I met only one who flaunted his wealth. On meeting that one exception I jested that he had parked his Rolls-Royce in my parking bay. In his riposte I found the CEO of a leading chain of retailing opticians as down to earth as my local grocer. I have an enduring friendship with a man whose property portfolio is likely valued at £20 million. He lives in a humble cottage and his only ambition is to walk his dog across the bleak Northumberland moors. Robert Burns was the inspiration behind the Irish pub theme phenomena. As a consequence my friend was a millionaire many times over but his lifestyle was as humble as a factory worker’s. The boss of the UK’s largest privately owned house building company was anything but pretentious.
Many people might like to give the impression that they’re wealthy. However, many rich men try hard to look just like us and they hate drawing attention to themselves. As I chatted with the CEO of Europe’s largest ship-fitters I remarked on the ordinariness of very wealthy men. He smiled: “such men don’t have anything to prove.”On two or three occasions wealthy friends confided that they envy me my simple life. True, this has not led to us swapping bank accounts. I don’t have a problem with that as the wealthiest of men come with much material, social and psychological baggage. Being poor I have enough hassle as it is without adding the burdens carried by multi-millionaires.

Further to Barry Dukes article, in the current RTN, we too have experienced the increase in mindless xenophobia in the UK. As expats living in Brittany we visited England last October to meet family and friends. (Left hand drive vehicle, french number plates ). On the M25 a works van overtook us sounding horn with 2 finger gesticulation. Again on the M25 another works van under no pressure from the rear to move over swung across into our lane immediately on passing causing us to brake sharply. There were other incidents too numerous to mention, one smashing our offside mirror. Just bad driving? We think not. We visited the UK pre Brexit and lived in UK till retirement at 65. Valenciano language troubles
I have recently moved to Spain. My children are attending our local Spanish school. Please could you explain why the schools in this area speak and learn in only the Valenicano language. I find it so difficult to help my children with their school work as I do not understand the language myself. Anywhere else in Spain all schools are taught in Castellano not Valenicano. I did not want my children going to an English private school I want them to learn the language quicker but I am finding it impossible to help them with all their homework. Sharon Moraira
Days gone by Gone are the days when children used to play outside on their bikes or just with a ball. I am an 80 year old woman, everywhere I go I see children sitting down playing on mobile phones or tablets. I think it’s a real shame how this generation has changed so much. EU businesses want closer collaboration with London post-brexit Two of Spain's largest companies announced new projects and further expansion in London last Thursday. Just a day after the UK Government began the formal process of withdrawing from the EU, Telefonica and Ferrovial made commitments to London, at an event organised by the Mayor of London's International Business Programme, held to promote greater links between London and Madrid. Wayra UK (part of Telefonica Open Future) unveiled plans to develop a new facility in North London, to help entrepreneurs in outer London pursue their start-up ideas. Backed by the GLA and Haringey Council, the hub will support around 10 digital start-ups per year. The project is also a collaboration with former England football legend Sol Campbell, who is keen to ensure that the development of tech expertise also benefits London's outer regions. Meanwhile, the Spanish infrastructure group Ferrovial announced the ‘Londoners' Lab’, a collaborative innovation programme focusing on solutions to improve day to day recycling in flats and multiple occupancy houses. The partnership between the GLA, Ferrovial Services, University College London and Future Cities Catapult will engage London residents directly to make them part of the solution and improve recycling rates. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: ‘These

Demand for interim accountants up 57 per cent after Brexit vote
Demand for qualified accountants to work in the UK on a contract basis within commerce and industry rose by 57 per cent between March 2016 and February 2017 as firms increasingly look to bring in senior expertise without the commitment of permanent headcount costs. That is according to market analysis from specialist recruiter, Global Accounting Network. Recent Inheritance Tax changes set to cause more financial strain to inheritors of Spanish Property! by

Wincham have the solution!!!! Owners of Spanish property may not be aware that unlike the UK when we lose a loved one, the beneficiary is usually exempt from paying inheritance tax. In Spain this is not the case as the individual beneficiary is liable and the Spanish law distinguishes between four groups when inheriting depending on the relation of the deceased or donor. Many of the Spanish regions in 2017 have introduced legal changes affecting Tax laws. Inheritance and Gift Tax modifications are part of these changes. The Law 13/2016 of December 29, has changed the main Valencian Tax Law 13/1997. Until now, the Valencia Tax Laws foresaw a tax allowance of 75 per cent of the tax to be paid when the heirs belonged to groups one and two. For 2017, it has kept this allowance for heir’s belonging to group one, but for the heirs from group two, the allowance has been radically reduced
to approximately 50%. Spanish Gift Tax allowances for groups one and two no longer applies. This raises the question will the other Spanish regions follow by reducing Tax allowances and how long until Valencia Region takes away the Spanish Inheritance Tax allowance in full? I was fascinated this morning by what I saw on television. The government are very concerned about the runaway costs regarding the National Health in the UK. The expectations of this wonderful service are far too high for the amount of taxes that are paid by everybody. The government are in discussion regarding the situation of the exploitation by health tourists. I have often remarked on the comparison of Spain and the UK, where you do not get any medical treatment in Spain until you produce proof of eligibility or payment. Of course, this is very difficult to do in the UK, as there is no structure in place for personal identification, which in this day and age is crazy and not realistic. The other interesting factor is the number of appointments made for the prescriptions for painkillers, cold remedies, various ointments, celiac foods, Omega 3 (fish oil supplements) and injections for holidays, to name a few. All of which can be purchased far cheaper, at the chemist. No wonder the doctor surgeries are always so busy. I personally find it unbelievable. I am sure that when the National Health was first introduced, which must have been wonderful, where for the first time, people had free healthcare, this use of the system was never anticipated and is far in excess of what it can afford. I have often wondered why some people have questioned why private health in Spain does not cover all the medication, as either an in-patient or an out-patient. Private health insurance premiums in Spain are remarkably inexpensive compared to the UK and from where I sit,
they do a very good job and the Spanish government support them as they know that private patients take away a vast amount of stress and cost from the National health system. However, to be realistic, they are privately funded companies and therefore they need to make a profit. Covering the cost of unlimited, on-going medication and every treatment available is not viable. For this reason, the health insurance companies are unable to cover you for pre-existing conditions and this same rule applies to travel insurance, in most cases. The Spanish system can come to quite a shock to some people, as there are very few benefits available. You have to have paid into the system to be eligible to any entitlement, which are very limited in comparison to the UK. I find the continued discussions on television and in the papers regarding Brexit very daunting and to think that we have at least a further two years, where every word will be analysed and various people’s opinion will be sought. I for one, wish we were not in this position as the grass is never greener on the other side and I think the cost is going to be formidable in all kinds of ways. Manufacturing and export the goods to a huge market within Europe will cease if the UK comes out of the single market, and they will be left with a hole in their market place for quite some time and I cannot recall Hard Brexit ever being discussed at the time of the vote. Returning to Sound Advice, at long last it would appear, as far as Liberty Seguros are concerned, we are getting on top of the vast amount of claims we have had to handle this winter, especially in the Javea area.

I understand that there are many disappointed people with claims not being dealt with in the way they had expected, by all insurers. I pride myself on having a Claims Department, with a very experienced Spanish speaking administrator, Sarah, for assisting my clients as much as possible. Yes, it does not stop the frustration, especially with a consortium claim, as they do take extra time to resolve. But I am confident that everything that can be done is carried out as efficiently as possible. My company goes from strength to strength and I had to make some decisions regarding my Els Poblets office. Tina, our very hard working Sales Consultant, had a very good opportunity presented to her and her husband, of returning to the UK to their old business of running a country pub, which of course they grabbed with both hands. I wish them both the very best of luck. A decision was made to move the Renewals Department to Els Poblets, one of the reasons being that two staff members live in Oliva, and this of course, shortened their journey, which was an added bonus. The Renewals office in Javea is now the Administration Centre for the company. Any renewals in the Javea area can still be handled by any office, although you might fancy a trip to Els Poblets, which is a lovely village by the sea, with some very nice restaurants and cafes. It is for the increase in the value of land over a maximum period of twenty years, from when it is sold.
The value is adjusted by the percentage determined by each municipality, but will not exceed the following: • Up to 5 years: 3.7% • Up to 10 years: 3.5% • Up to 15 years: 3.2% • Up to 20 years: 3%
It is normally the seller who is obliged to pay this tax, however if the seller is a Non Resident and does not pay the plusvalia tax, the Spanish Tax office can make the purchaser pay it, instead. To calculate the Plusvalia Tax you must to take into account the value of the land at the time of the sale. This can be done by checking the IBI bills (SUMA – Council Tax).
If you would like to know how to calculate this tax, you can do the following:
Multiply the number of full year’s ownership from the date of the purchase, with a maximum of twenty years, and then applying this to the table of percentages mentioned above. The tax rate will be set by each municipality, but cannot exceed 30%. For Example: • Land value: 5,000 euros • Purchase Date: 01/06/2000 • Sale date: 30/05/2014 • Tax rate: 5,000 x (13 x 3.2)% x 30% = 5,000 x 41.6% x 30% = 624 euros

La Nucia rocks for Garage Rules 2
Bikers and fans of Kustom Art and Rock ‘n’ Roll have to wait no longer as the Garage Rules II Festival arrives in the area. The free festival takes over the Sports City Camilo Cano in La Nucia on Saturday April 15. Organised by the Crew Bobber Association in collaboration with La Nucia Town Hall, Garage Rules II is one of the highlights of the La Nucia Sport Experience 2017 and is expected to attract over 6000 enthusiasts throughout the area. Activities are scheduled for inside and outside the arena on the Pavilion Road area, with exhibitions of classic American customised cars and bikes and demonstrations by BMX riders and skateboarders.
The organisers expect around 50 stallholders to attend selling and exhibiting items related to the custom culture world, such as clothing, jewellery and graphic art materials plus a number of gourmet food trucks will be on hand to feed the hungry hordes. Last year's inaugural event was a huge success with visitors from far and wide enjoying the free entertainment, particularly the Rock n Roll artists and DJ's providing music throughout the day. This year's visitors will not be disappointed with three live bands lined up to perform in the arena. Tony and the Rockheavyllies, Colonel Lee and the Racers will share the spotlight. The Rock n Roll Record Hop 1950's -60's will see
vinyl sessions focusing on rock music from the classic era focusing on legends such as Chuck Berry, Elvis the Beach Boys and their cohorts provided by popular local DJ's Robert Serrano and Adam Classic. Visitors will have an opportunity to vote for their favourite customized bike and car and which skater and rider performed best, with awards presented at the end of the day. The most prestigious being the 'COOL CAR' Trophy. The event kicks off at 10.30am and will run through until 9.30pm with exhibitions and demonstrations for all the family planned throughout the day. So, put on your leathers, bandanna and shades and get yourselves down to the Sports City in La Nucia for a day to remember.

The Pontarddulais Male Choir in action
Special treat for Welsh expats Welsh expats living on the Costa Blanca will be treated to an evening of nostalgia on 6th May when the internationally-renowned Pontarddulais Male Choir take to the stage at the Auditori Teulada-Moraira. The local Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir and Dolce Divas will also be appearing in the programme. The Welsh choir will be 80-strong and the CBMVC have another 40 voices, sure to promise a rousing finale when both choirs sing together. The Pontarddulais Male Choir has achieved prominence through a record 16 first places at the Royal National Eisteddfod of Wales and 2 first places at the Llangollen
International Eisteddfod. They have undertaken 13 overseas tours including visits to Canada, America and several European countries. The Welsh choir is in constant demand for concerts across the length and breadth of the UK, as well as television and radio work and during the 55 years of its existence the choir has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity. Javea U3A group makes history! THE next meeting of Javea U3A’s History Group will be a landmark event because it will feature the group’s 100th talk. Peter Atkinson, the group leader, will give a presentation at the Casa de Cultura on Tuesday April 11 on medieval Spain entitled Moors & Christians: Conquest, Reconquest and Architectural Legacy. The presentation will begin with the events leading up to the Moorish invasion of Spain in the year 711, and will end with the ethnic cleansing that followed the 1492 completion of the Christian Reconquest. Party at the Plaza Portal del Clot On Saturday, the Plaza Portal del Clot in Javea plays host to ‘Active Extrem’, an event designed to bring together skating and biking enthusiasts for a day of exhibitions, competitions and workshops.

The official team from Maniak Ramps will be setting-up in the plaza later this week, installing platforms on which the likes of Diego Cano, Pedro Sanchez and Dani Delgado will perform. The entertainment carries on late into the night with the final of the MontgoRock emerging bands competition… The final of the competition, which is now in its second year, will take place at 10.30pm. Kicking off the performances – bound to 35 minutes per act – are the Happy Freuds, Javea-based group with the youngest musicians in the competition, followed by Why Not Rock, a band specialising in covers and version, before Deshora, focused on punk rock and based in Ondara, Tremp, based in Gata de Gorgos will close the performances before the panel, formed of Monty Peiro (Gran Quivira), Sonal Jogia (solo artist) and an organiser of MontgoRock decide who will win the chance to perform at the MontgoRock Festival alongside icons such as Leiva, MClan and La Fuga. Admission is free and there will be a raffle with the chance to win tickets to MontgoRock next month.

Javea U3A committee to continue Members of Javea U3A have given their executive committee a big vote of confidence by electing them to continue in their positions for the next 12 months. At the annual general meeting held at the Parador Hotel on Wednesday March 29, all seven members of the committee were returned unopposed for another term of office. Members of the 1,200-strong association have been voting online over the last couple of months and the results were announced at the AGM. President Eric Atkins was re-elected and will be joined once again by vice-president Guy Marriott, secretary Roy Brown, treasurer Mick Cox, membership secretary Sheila Giacomelli, groups co-ordinator Karen White and communications officer Ian Rogerson. The non-executive committee will be made up of webmaster Clive White, deputy secretary Val Dromgoole, deputy treasurer Sally Rush, deputy membership secretary Linda Coughlin, deputy groups co-ordinator Yvonne Mulley and member without portfolio Jacqui Rogerson. Shirley King will continue to serve as events co-ordinator. The president said it had been a successful year since the committee was first elected and he thanked his committee members for their hard work and support. ‘We have had a busy 12 months,’ he said, highlighting some of the group’s achievements. ‘We re-launched the Care and Share Group, under the leadership of Angela Chantry and have enjoyed some really good events including the May Ball, Summer Barbecue and Barn Dance, organised by our events co-ordinator Shirley King.’ ‘We have also launched a new Facebook Group and thanks to the hard work of communications officer Ian Rogerson and member Margaret March it has flourished. Although it has only been going for only a couple of months, we already have around 100 members.’ Eric continued: ‘The Travel Group has organised some wonderful trips, some of which I have been on myself and there are many more on the go – my sincere

Its madness not to meditate
It might sound counter-intuitive at first but the best way to get more done is to spend at least ten minutes meditating at the start of each day, says Tom Evans, mindfulness trainer, meditation guide and the author of The Authority Guide to Practical Mindfulness. The normal human mind can only experience one thought at a time. So, if we mull over the past or fret about the future, we lose focus on what we should be working on and our efficiency drops accordingly. The practice of mindfulness meditation does not teach us how to have no thoughts at all, but instead to form a new relationship with our thoughts. So while many people turn to meditation to help reduce stress or anxiety, there is a more practical incentive to start meditating each day. The time we invest comes back to us many times over as we become more creative, more productive and generally luckier and happier in life and in business. What’s more, these days there is no need to find a guru or travel to an ashram for a silent retreat for two weeks. There are many free or inexpensive meditations and meditation apps available. So, if you have a smartphone, you already have access to a ‘guru’ in your pocket.

The Asthma Society of Ireland has issued a warning urging people not to dry their laundry indoors, as the added moisture to the room can lead to the growth of mould, and a whole lot of health-related issues. If you're forever suffering from coughs and colds, maybe it's time to invest in a tumble dryer. A moist, mouldy living space can really affect your breathing, particularly if you have asthma or a weakened immune system. It's not good for skin related problems either. Moist environments encourage the growth of
mould which can release 'seeds' called spores. The spores can cause allergic reactions in some people. Mould and fungal spores are often invisible to the naked eye. Normally, when people breathe in these spores, their immune system helps get rid of them by coughing or sneezing. If you aren't sensitive to mould, you may never even experience a reaction. But for some people with asthma who are sensitive to mould spores, it can act as a trigger, causing asthma symptoms to get worse. So to make sure you're
not making future trouble for yourself, the answer is to whenever possible, get your washing dried outside or in a tumble dryer in a wellventilated indoor space away from
bedrooms and living areas. Remember to keep an eye out for mould or mildew popping up in damp and humid places, particularly bathrooms, kitchens and basements.

Where do YOU fit in? Women who have higher waist to hip ratio 'increase cancer risk by 21 per cent'.
Women with higher waist-to-hip ratios increase their risk of womb cancer by more than a fifth. Research published in the British Medical Journal found that for every 0.1-unit increase in the ratio between waist and hip, the risk of getting the disease increased by a staggering 21 per cent. Experts from the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) said the results showed a strong correlation between carrying extra weight around the waist and cancer. Nearly 10,000 women are diagnosed with the disease, which is otherwise known as endometrial cancer and uterine cancer, every year in the UK. Currently, women calculate their waist-to-hip ratio by dividing waist size by their hip measurement. For women, having a ratio that's greater than 0.85 is an indicator of obesity, while the figure is 0.90 for men. The study also found connections between bowel and pancreatic cancer. ‘These results demonstrate how important it is for women to make sure they maintain a healthy weight in order to reduce their cancer risk,' says Prof Konstantinos Tsilidis, of Imperial College London, who co-authored the research. 'More evidence on the associations between body fat and different cancer types could allow for individuals to be targeted for personalised cancer prevention interventions, such as weight loss programmes.'

Spain has around eight million people who suffer from hayfever to a level which requires treatment or medication, either prescribed by a doctor or bought over the counter. Figures show those whose condition worsens when the pollen count is high has risen from 22% to 33% over the last ten years. For hayfever sufferers, the start of spring invariably brings sneezing fits, stuffy noses, headaches, sore and runny eyes, especially in the south, northeast and centre of Spain. Olive trees, cypress and bananas are among those which are most likely to spark allergic reactions, although fortunately for those on the Mediterranean, orange trees seem less of an aggravating factor. The pollen count is expected to be high over the next few weeks for banana trees, with Inland Murcia, Andalucía, Catalunya, Extremadura, Aragón and Madrid being the main affected areas. It's not all bad news for sufferers though, the Spanish Allergy Society (SEAIC) revealed recently that last spring was much more intense in terms of pollen levels than the expected levels of Spring 2017. However for those living in the cities and provinces of Sevilla, Jaén, Madrid, Barcelona and Zaragoza, this may be cold comfort, as they are already dealing with the effects of very high pollen levels. Measured in grams per cubic metre of air, the worst count in the whole of Spain is in Madrid, at a whopping 2.32 kilos.

Glue the triangles to a strand of baker's twine and tie or glue the twine ends to the crate. Fill the box with gifts like wine, glasses and chocolate to give to friends and neighbours. Create a bee friendly space Keep honey bees from disappearing by creating a bee friendly garden using plants they love.
Worldwide honey bee stocks have been waning since 2004 because of a mystery illness called Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), a phenomenon in which worker bees from a beehive or European honey bee colony abruptly and inexplicably disappear. Bees are the prime pollinators of the planet. Since many of our pollinators are now scarce, we are dependent on the honey bee to pollinate our crops Pollination starts when a bee crawls around a plant blossom. The honey bee is dusted with pollen. Then the bee flies over to another blossom with the pollen in its hair. When the bee lands, the pollen falls onto this blossom’s stigma. Now a fruit, vegetable or other crop can grow. Even though other insects pollinate crops too, without the pollination from the honey bees there would be one third less crops in the world than there is now. Bees are looking for two things when they visit your garden: Nectar which is loaded with sugars and is a bee’s main source of energy and Pollen which provides a balanced diet of proteins and fats. They have good
colour vision to help them find flowers and the nectar and pollen they offer. Colours that attract bees are blue, purple, violet, white, and yellow. Help stop the decline of bees by planting your garden with all kinds of nectar-rich plants. Encourage them to visit a part of your yard or garden by planting a bee border or a bee garden, just as you would plant a butterfly garden. Put plants in full sun and in a sheltered place out of the wind. they do not like to be blown around when trying to land on flowers and also prefer flowers in sun rather than shade. One of the best plants you can use is lavender. Other plants that provide plenty of pollen and nectar include catnip, verbena, borage, toadflax, California poppy, hebe, weigela, scented geraniums and most herbs (Sage, rosemary, oregano, thyme, mint, etc.). Lastly, protect them from sprays or other insecticides or pesticides. If you must use a spray, try to use one that does not affect them and spray pesticides in the evening after they have returned to their hives.

And wouldn’t you be really disappointed to discover, even with all the money in the world you will never own one? Because there is only one in existence and you can’t have it! Back in the day, before off- road 4X4’s became as popular as
Chelsea Tractors, pick-up trucks were considered to be the cool way to transport stuff around, particularly in the USA. Built as a prototype in the mid 1980’s and honed from an E30 3-er Convertible bodyshell to make use of extra bracing, this was the BMW design team’s attempt to get into the pick-up market. Although it looks like a pretty good attempt, the bigwigs at the top decided against production, so the BMW never made it past this prototype stage. However someone at the car giant must have loved it and this vehicle actually served 26 years at what is now BMW M Division’s base in Garching, near Munich. It was used to transport heavy
equipment and parts around the plant, and originally featured the Italian-spec M3’s engine – a downsized 2.0-litre variant, with 190bhp, built to duck under a tax threshold in Italy – but the revered 2.3 found its way under the bonnet eventually, unlocking a proper 198bhp. It was retired four years ago to make way for newer pick-up... Hmmmm wonder what that looks like?
Wood you believe it?
By Andy Mansell The Deux Cheveux or Citreon 2CV has become something of a classic since production stopped 27 years ago. I vividly remember owning a battered old red one in the early 90’s, which was as eccentric as it was unreliable. My partner refused to travel in it, accusing it of being a death trap and with a top speed approaching 50mph, it took ages to drive anywhere. In fact it once took me ten hours to drive from the Midlands to the Isle of Wight. I could have flown to Los Angeles quicker. But I loved the creaky, leaky, old girl and used to peel back the plastic hood, boasting about driving a cabriolet. When I occasionally managed to push the speedometer up, normally downhill, her front passenger windows would flap up and down like the ears of a cocker spaniel running along a windy beach. These days a restored model can fetch thousands of euros and it’s amazing how many you can still see on the roads of Spain. However, I guarantee you will never see one quite like the one Robillard, a retired French cabinet maker, has constructed. He has built himself a life size, fully functioning replica of a Citroën 2CV almost entirely of wood. The car, made of Touriane fruitwood, took him six years to complete and is expected to pass its first technical inspection without a problem. The Frenchman has been working with wood since the age of 14, concentrating on constructing miniature replicas made of wood. However, this is the first time that he has made a full-scale working replica. He began the project in 2011 and the labour of love has taken six years to complete. The car runs on a genuine Citroën 2CV engine; its mechanical workings are not wooden and the windows are made of glass, but almost all other details have been completely carved out of wood. Robillard has put in extensive work to get the detailing right. He has neatly carved out the Citroën logo and chiseled out the grille to make it as close to the real thing as possible. The headlamps and other electrical equipment are fully functional, with electrical wiring done in the fashion of the real car. Talking about the motive behind his creation, Robillard said, “I wanted to make an object that remains after me. I would like this car to be exhibited one day in an art gallery.” Imagine popping out to wash and polish the car on a Saturday morning, picking up a bucket, sponge, chamois leather and a can of furniture polish.

La Vila seeded top in play offs After an incredible season which saw them win all 22 league games, La Vila Rugby Club will enter the play offs later this month as firm favourites. After beating TecnidexValencia 76-7 in front of a loud and passionate home crowd last Sunday the club finished top of Honor Division B with a total of 107 points. Despite falling behind to an early Kepse try for Tecnidex, scores from Ignacio Gutierrez Müller, Miguel Angel Ponce, Gonzalo Pérez, Óscar Viotti, Guillem Carrión, Matías Jara, Luciano Martínez and Gerónimo Fernández completed the rout for la Vila proving what a difficult proposition they have been for opposing teams in the league this Winter. Their maximum points total ensures they enter the play off quarter finals as top seeded team. They will play the eighth seeded team Babyauto Zarautz RT, away from home on the weekend of April 22/23, with the return fixture at home the following weekend in the Estadio de Villayosa. Should they be succesful against Babyauto they will play the home and away semi-finals on the two subsequent weekends. Thirty years on from their last visit to Wembley, Coventry City, thirteen points adrift at the foot of League Two, won the Checkatrade English Football League Trophy at Wembley last Sunday. In front of 43,000 of their delirious fans the Sky Blues pulled off a shock 2-1 victory over fellow League Two side Oxford United. Thirty years ago, on their first-ever trip to Wembley, at a time when they were still an established top-flight side, Coventry were also the underdogs, but they were too good for Spurs on the day and recorded a famous 3-2 extra time victory to lift the FA Cup for their first and only time. Britain's womens Number One tennis player, Johanna Konta took the biggest title of her career with victory over Caroline Wozniacki as she became the first British woman to win the Miami Open. The 25-year-old overpowered her Danish opponent - a former world number one - 6-4 6-3, taking home ÂŁ940,000 in prize money in claiming what was her third WTA Tour success from a fourth final. No Frampton Santa Cruz rematch Carl Frampton will not fight Leo Santa Cruz this summer after the World Boxing Association told its featherweight champion to fight Abner Mares instead. Frampton beat Santa Cruz to claim the WBA belt in New York last summer but lost the January rematch in Las Vegas. But the WBA ended speculation of a third fight between the pair in Belfast by ordering Santa Cruz to defend his belt against his fellow Mexican. Frampton, 30, is set to announce his next opponent in the next few weeks. The Belfast boxer has indicated that the fight is likely to take place at Windsor Park, home of the Northern Ireland football team, in late July or early August. Abner Mares won the regular WBA featherweight title on December 2016, when he defeated unanimously Argentina's Jesus Cuellar, winning the right to face Santa Cruz for the second time. The Mexicans met before in 2015 in a bout considered one of the best fights of the year, which ended in a majority decision to Santa Cruz, who became the WBA featherweight super champion. Match fixing drama for Barcelona B An Italian coach has been arrested by Spanish police investigating allegations of match-fixing. Filippo Di Pierro, the boss of Spanish third division side Eldense, was arrested after his side's 12-0 defeat to Barcelona's B team on Saturday. There is no indication Barcelona B were involved in any wrongdoing. Di Pierro, who joined the club in January, was hired by an unnamed Italian investment group that has since severed ties with the club. The defeat, a joint record for Spain's third tier, sealed Eldense's relegation. The following day the club said they would not play any more matches this season, but later backtracked and confirmed the fixtures would be honoured. the Sydney International without dropping a set.
