Fifteen years for attempted murder by Keith Nicol A court has sentenced a man to fifteen years in prison for attempting to murder his ex-wife with a homemade explosive in the city of Elche. It’s alleged he placed the explosive in the headrest of the driver’s seat of her car. The accused, Óscar OR, is being held in provisional custody although he pleaded not guilty during the trial, held on March 6th at the Audiencia of Alicante, after asserting that he did not wish “any harm” to the victim. The court, however, noted that the accused, a mechanic who specialises in electronics, broke into the vehicle of his ex-companion, which was parked on a street in the city, and changed the headrest to another with an explosive charge. The device consisted of a PVC pipe filled with gunpowder and hunting shotgun shrapnel that was connected by wires to the electric window system and designed to explode when the windows were activated. The explosion occurred on November 10, 2014 , when the injured party returned from shopping in the city and raised the windows of the car when parked. The driver suffered several injuries to the head and back that required surgical intervention and subsequent medical treatment.The Audiencia has established that Óscar OR tried to end the life of his ex-girlfriend for sentimental reasons because she had claimed in court that they had two daughters under the age of 18 and he had to pay maintenance. “No other more plausible conclusion is offered to this court,” the magistrates pointed out in the ruling, because “no other person is known to maintain a situation of conflict or animosity toward the victim, nor to know her habits, nor possess the elements and know-how for the installation of the device”. In addition to the fifteen years of imprisonment, the accused is to compensate the victim with more than 32,000€.

Concern about the waters of the Mar Menor and their impact on national tourists have l;eft local hoteliers with room for caution. “The winter has gone well with foreigners seeking active and cultural tourism; golf has increased occupancy in hotels such as La Manga Club, and religious tourism in Murcia, Cartagena and Lorca, but what will happen to our traditional Beach and Sun tourism; is an uncertainty,” explained the president of the hoteliers on the coast. “Spain is a favourite destination for foreigners and it seems that the Spanish are starting to go on vacation with the improvement of the economy,” said Martínez. And yet, tourism entrepreneurs see the campaign held back due to the health of the lagoon. “Every week we meet with the scientists to follow up on their state and we are optimistic because the Mar Menor is alive and has regenerative capacity, but there are still aggressions, like agriculture at the foot of the beach, and we see measures still to be done”, said the president of Hostetur. It is “of great concern,” said the commercial director of the hotel Costa Narejos, Angel Solano, although his four star establishment is already showing better prospects than last year, with 70% of reservations for Easter, and about 40% for next summer. “We are pleased with the anticipation of the reservations, a change of trend in the consumer that we have encouraged by rewarding those who book in advance rather than at the last hour”, explained Solano. There is only one other threat more dreaded than the colour of the Mar Menor for hoteliers: a television meteorologist pointing out clouds over Murcia for Easter. “For Easter, the Spanish tourist prepares his getaway at short notice, according to the weather,” Solano knows by experience. If, however, the classic icon of the ‘fried egg’ is advertised in the southeast corner of the map, there is little doubt that the beaches will be filled with tourists.

Brexit breakthrough for Brits in Spain Spain support Prime Minister’s bid to win fair deal for expats. by Tahnee Wright Prime Minister Theresa May has been battling to secure commitment from EU member states in regard to the rights of UK nationals living as expatriates after Brexit. May has stood her ground, adamant she cannot offer a similar guarantee for EU nationals in the UK until those protections for UK nationals are agreed upon. Her attempts to secure an early agreement on the issue were rebuffed late last year by German chancellor Angela Merkel and European Council president Donald Tusk. As the 10 day countdown until the Article 50 due date begins, there now appears to be a breakthrough on the issue to put the minds of UK national expatriates living in Spain at rest. Spain has voiced its support for a mutual agreement and has backed ‘in principle’ a common agreement for EU and UK nationals living abroad. Police bust Costa Blanca criminal gang

Police have placed 13 people belonging to one of the most active criminal gangs in the region under arrest as part of a two-phase operation. The group, ranging in age from 27 to 40 years old and of mixed origin, robbed houses across Murcia and Cartagena, targeting the homes of drug dealers - removing both narcotics and cash - in the knowledge that the victims would not be able to report the robbery. They also stole from the elderly, using a slick system wherein some members entertained their victims whilst the rest stole money and jewellery. The first phase of the police operation took off in February when three suspects were arrested whilst attempting to deliver stolen jewellery to an accomplice. A few days ago, the second phase was carried out when another 10 suspects were arrested. The investigation remains open pending further allegations.

Spanish foreign minister says Scotland would be at back of queue to join EU if it becomes independent Nicola Sturgeon recently announced plans to hold a second referendum before Brexit is finalised and the news hasn’t gone without comment from ministers across the EU. Spain’s Foreign Minister Alfonso Dastis said this week that Scotland would ‘have to queue’ to rejoin Europe in the event it achieved independence. Dastis said Spain ‘supports the integrity of the United Kingdom and does not encourage secessions or divisions in any of the member states. We prefer things to stay as they are.’ He said Scotland ‘would have to queue, meet the requirements for entry, and enter negotiations.’ The issue of independence is one of contention for Spain it fights its own separatist movements in Catalonia and the Basque country. Ms Sturgeon made the surprise announcement on Monday and said ‘if Scotland is to have a real choice – when the terms of Brexit are known but before it is too late to choose our own course – then that choice must be offered between the autumn of next year, 2018 and the spring of 2019.’ However, the UK Parliament must authorise any such poll – meaning Ms Sturgeon's call could be blocked by Ms May who attacked the move, accusing her Scottish counterpart of playing ‘games’ and the SNP of having ‘tunnel vision’. Whilst it is unlikely that Downing Street will block the referendum altogether, reports on Tuesday morning suggested the referendum, which requires the approval of both Houses of Parliament in Westminster, would not come before the UK leaves the European Union.

President of Murcia on embezzlement charge President of the Autonomous Region of Murcia, Pedro Antonio Sanchez has reportedly been charged with misappropriation of two million euros of public funds, whilst in office as Mayor of the South Murcia town of Puerto Lumbreras, a position he held for ten years until 2013. Prosecutors allege he spent the money on building materials that never existed. In September 2015, Guardia Civil Officers entered an auditorium in the town which should have held the products, but they were not there. The list of missing items include generators, firewalls, carpets, doors, fireplaces plus many more items. The products were to be used in the construction of a cultural complex for the town, but the building was over 60% unfinished. He faces three charges of misrepresentation, documentary misrepresentation and embezzlement of public funds. The beleagured President is now facing a parliamentary revolt from his erstwhile partners in the Ciudanos Party, who are now calling for a motion of censure. In addition former Murcia President Albert Garre has announced he is completely scandalised by these terrible events and is giving serious thought to leaving the PP Party and joining a local party.

Spanish police release Terra Mitica theme photos of seized weapons park cleared of reckless homicide

Owners of the Terra Mitica Theme Park in Benidorm have been cleared of the charge of reckless homicide by a court in Alicante. The appeal hearing relates to a fatal accident which occurred in 2014, when teenage Icelandic tourist, Andri Freyr Sveinsson,18, died after being thrown from his seat on one of the park's thrill rides. The hearing concluded that the death was accidental and no blame could be attached to either parties. An independent report also matched the evidence, revealing the tragedy was caused by a design fault on the eggcup style seats of the 'Hell' Rollercoaster. However, the ride had been running smoothly for several years and passed all it's inspections and revisions without the fault being detected. The court heard that since the accident the seats have been completely modified by the manufacturer to ensure the ride adheres to all safety regulations and no further accidents of this kind occur. by Andy Mansell Spanish police have now released photographs of the ten thousand weapon arsenal seized in Northern Spain in January. The anti-terrorist operation stopped weapons including anti-aircraft guns, howitzers and grenades from falling into the hands of extremists in France, Spain and Belgium. Some of the weaponry was said to

be powerful enough to “bring down an aircraft.” and was intended for the hands of terrorists in Europe. Europol announced the vast haul in January but only now have Spanish police published images of the devastating haul. Among the stash were 10,000 rifles, 400 howitzers, anti-aircraft guns, grenades, pistols and revolvers. Spanish cops also found a factory in Bilbao maintaining and reactivating old guns so they could be re-used.

5.2 million for beach repair

Last week the Spanish Government authorised an investment of 27.6 million to repair the damage caused by the storms in Spain.

Much of the cache is thought to have been bought legally through auctions before being reactivated. They were then sold from the Spanish distribution centre which used a sports shop as its legal front. Five people were arrested following the raid back in January. A Europol statement said: “The seized weapons had an easy journey in the black market and posed a significant risk of being acquired by organised crime groups and terrorists.”

Spain mourns the loss of mum of two in London terror attacks One of the victims of the Westminster terror attack has been named as 43-year-old mum of two Aysha Frade, The mum is believed to have been killed as she went to pick up her children aged eight and 11 from school. She is said to have taught Spanish DLD College London, near the scene of the massacre. Aysha’s Spanish family come from Betanzos, near the Galician city of La Coruna in the north west. Her family started receiving calls from London informing them firstly that her documentation had been found on Westminster Bridge. Hours later, her death was reportedly confirmed. As Aysha had a British passport, the Spanish Embassy had initially said there were no national victims. But soon after it was announced that among the dead was a woman of Spanish origin. Her older sisters run an English school in Betanzos and she has other friends and family in the area, the birthplace of her mum. A friend in Betanzos said: ‘She loved coming here and spending time with friends and relatives.’ Several relatives are reportedly travelling to Britain today (Thursday). 8.8 million of this is designated for the Valencian Community with the majority, 5.2 million to be invested in the Alicante Province. In Alicante, work is taking place on the footpath of the beach of La Mata, in Torrevieja; Similarly, in Orihuela there was a break in the access route to the Vistamar beach. In total, 5.2 million will be invested by the Valencian Community to cover these and other repairs. In addition, after the storm last January, the Government authorised further aid for Alicante, due to the storm damages along the coast. In total, in the Government of the Comunitat Valenciana has invested another 3.6 million euros. However, the group ‘Ecologists in Action’ have demanded the paralysis of the Coastal Plan 2017 and for work to cease immediately. “With the excuse of the effects of the storms on the coast, the government is acting indiscriminately on well-preserved areas where there has never been a sandy beach.

‘You won’t succeed - you won't divide us - we won't be cowed by terrorists’ London terrorist attack occurs on the first anniversary of the terrorist bombings in Brussels that killed 32 people. by Tahnee Wright FOUR people have died and at least 40 were injured on Wednesday afternoon as the attacker drove a car along the pavement of Westminster Bridge, ploughing into pedestrians, before fatally stabbing a policeman and being shot dead by police in the grounds of Parliament. The dead officer has been named as PC Keith Palmer, 48, a husband and father. The attack unfolded at about 14.40 GMT when a single attacker drove a grey Hyundai i40 along the pavement, killing at least two people and injuring many more. The car then crashed into railings outside the Houses of Parliament. The attacker, armed with a knife, ran to Parliament where he was confronted by the police. PC Palmer - who was not armed - was then stabbed and killed. Mark Rowley, Acting Deputy Commissioner and head of counter terrorism at the Metropolitan Police, said approximately 40 others were injured in the British Parliament complex. Rowley said that figure included three police officers, two of whom remain in serious condition. The dead attacker, whose identity has not been revealed, is believed to be the only suspect. The police's working assumption is that the attacker was inspired by international and Islamist-related terrorism.

Londoners can expect to see heavier police presence, both armed and unarmed, throughout the city for the next few days, Rowley said. On Wednesday evening, Prime Minister Theresa May gave a stirring speech, condemning the ‘sick and depraved’ attack and promising attempts to defeat UK values were ‘doomed for failure’. May applauded the heroism demonstrated by the police, saying: ‘We will all move forward

together, never giving in to terror and never allowing the voices of hate and evil to drive us apart.’ London mayor Sadiq Khan said: ‘My message to those that want to harm us and destroy our way of life is: You won't succeed; you won't divide us; we won't be cowed by terrorists.’ Police confirmed that a full counterterrorism operation is underway and that they are increasing law enforcement presence around the city.

Motorcyclist dies in Torrevieja by Keith Nicol A 26-year-old motorcyclist died on Monday after crashing into a streetlight in Torrevieja. Apparently the young man was on a motorbike traveling at great speed along Avenida Rosa Mazón, when the bike lost control and slammed into a lamppost. After an investigation by the Policia Local, the oil spill and skid marks were cleared up and friends and family have marked the spot with candles and flowers in memory of the Torrevieja resident. The incident took place shortly before 7am when, for reasons that are being investigated, the motorbike crashed hard against one of the lampposts. Ambulance crews could not do anything to save the life of the victim after the terrible impact. The Policia Local is investigating the cause of the accident which initially was thought to be just excessive speed prior to the roundabout just before Avenue Delfina Viudes, in the immediate

vicinity of a water park and several well-known nightclubs in the town. At the time of the incident there were hardly any vehicles around except for some cars leaving the local nightclubs. A friend of the deceased said that he was riding pillion on the motorcycle, which was hit from behind by a car, forcing the bike to gain speed and crash into the pole. Apparently the deceased was thrown violently into the lamppost while the rider who lost control of the bike after the collision, survived. However, a report in 'Información' newspaper noted that he was the rider of the bike. Details have yet to be confirmed by the Policia Local. The deceased was well known throughout the local community. He was also a face that many expatriates would recognise as he attended many events as a volunteer of the Protection Civil Corps of Torrevieja. His ex-companions were heartbroken after hearing the news of the accident the morning it happened. Javier Manzanares, Councillor for

Civil Protection Torrevieja's Facebook page, they said: “Our most heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased exvoluntario. Always in our memory. Rest in peace.”

UK airlines may be forced to drop flights from Spain Post-Brexit

by Andy Mansell A stark warning from EU Chiefs could force route changes for the major UK airlines Ryanair and easyJet, flying out of Alicante-Elche and Valencia Airports post Brexit. Currently, both use these as bases for flights to destinations across the European Union countries, giving travellers along the Costa Blanca the opportunity to visit cities such as Rome, Paris and Milan and also fly to other airports in Spain, directly from their local airport, but just days from the triggering of Article 50 uncertainty remains for the future of these routes. Representatives from easyJet, along with the British Airways owner IAG, Ryanair and the Tui Group, whose portfolio of airlines includes Thomson, met the EU’s Brexit taskforce last week. EU officials in the meetings were clear, however, about the rigidity of the rules, amid concerns at a senior EU level that

too many in the aviation industry are in denial about the consequences of the UK’s decision to leave the bloc. They warned the airlines that they will need to relocate their headquarters, sell off shares to European nationals, or drop the intra-Europe routes if they want to continue flying within continental Europe after Brexit. The industry holds out hope that the UK and the EU will be able to seal an early deal during Article 50 negotiations ensuring damage to the industry is limited. However, a number of member states may also have interests in standing in the way of Britain’s attempts to strike a new deal. Spanish diplomats, for example, say they will not sign any international aviation agreement that recognises the airport on Gibraltar. For now, it's business as usual for the carriers, who have continued to add more European routes to their Spanish bases for the next two seasons.

Tons of sand to protect a private beach stall

Tons of Sand have been moved along an Orihuela beach by local government to add protection to a private company. The Cambiemos de Orihuela formation has again publicly denounced the fact that tons of sand have been moved from the city’s beaches to protect privately owned beach bars by the sea. The events occurred during the storms of December 2016 and January 2017 plus again last week, when a tractor moved the sand along the beach to help avoid damage to the facility. The group has asked for an explanation from the government team of Emilio Bascuñana (PP) as they would like to know if permission was given by the government to carry out such actions and if so, if such actions were undertaken with municipal means, to benefit the company, ‘Chiringuitos del sol’. Cambiemos recalled that in the January plenary session, the government team was asked about the situation that was taking place on the coast of Orihuela and said that it seemed alarming to them. “During the successive storms that have taken place, the beaches that have beach bars throughout the year, have been artificially altered in order to protect the private facilities of the company awarded the seasonal services. Thus, on the beach of La Zenia, at a time when the wind and waves were so large that they went several meters into the street causing serious damage to our public space, a tractor-shovel was redistributed tons of sand from the beach to build a ‘fort’, to protect the bars.” During their speech at the plenary, the councillor of the Costas, Infrastructures and Urban Solid Waste was alerted to the situation. “We asked them if the tractor was municipal property, ie if they were public resources that were being used in the private interest or if it had been the company that had sent the tractor and shovel, and if so, what actions were going to be taken. The government said: ‘We were told that they had no record of this situation and that they would have to inquire about the matter.’ Since then, we have received no answer to our question.”

Anniversary of the Torrevieja earthquake Every March 21 a tribute is made to the memory of the earthquake that destroyed much of the towns of Guardamar, Torrevieja and Almoradi, causing a total of 386 deaths.

by Keith Nicol From September 13, 1828 to March 21, 1829, there were some 200 earthquakes of a mild character in the area around Alicante. However, at 6:15pm on March 21st, 1829, Spain experienced one of the country's largest earthquakes as the Vega Baja was shaken by a quake that registered 6.6Â° on the Richter scale. The distruction caused and the collapse of buildings, left 389 dead, 377 injured, and 2,965 homes completely destroyed or damaged. Houses of several floors, without any foundations, supported by weak wooden beams and located in narrow streets, fell with their inhabitants inside. The largest impact was in Torrevieja, were all the houses were demolished; Guardamar had to be redesigned, and Almoradi was the most affected city. Every year in Almoradi, its inhabitants accompany the saint called San Emigdio, who is the patron saint of earthquakes, and pray to the memory of all the victims. The earthquake of 1829 is so deeply rooted in the minds of the people of Vega Baja that when the August 2008 earthquake of 3.6 degrees occurred, the Council received dozens of petitions to take San Emigdio out onto the streets. Since 1829, only three other earthquakes in Spain have measured higher on the Richter scale.

Passport renewal: You can now apply for UK passport in JUST 10 minutes online A new online passport renewal service has been launched by the government which is said to take an average of ten minutes to complete. HM Passport Office piloted the new process last year with 240,000 people. Applicants can choose to upload a â€˜suitableâ€™ digital photo from a smartphone or tablet. Once ready for processing, it still takes around three weeks for the Home Office to send out a new passport, providing all documents submitted are accepted. This timescale will stay the same. To be eligible, applicants must live in the UK, be 26 or older, not hold dualnationality and in possession of their current passport, which cannot have expired before 2012. In the meantime, all UK customers and British Citizens overseas can complete most of their application and pay online, before printing and returning a signed declaration, their supporting documents, and photographs in the post to HM Passport Office for processing.

The RED Special Edition iPhones were launched in recognition of more than 10 years of partnership between Apple and (RED) and alike earlier red hued products, a portion of sales from the red iPhones will be used to help fund HIV/ AIDS research. The special edition REDiPhone will be available to order online worldwide and in stores beginning today, Friday March 24. ‘Since we began working with (RED) 10 years ago, our customers have made a significant impact in fighting the spread of AIDS through the purchase of our products’ said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. (RED), founded by Bono and Bobby Shriver in 2006, funds programs that help prevent the transmission of HIV from mothers to their unborn babies. AIDS has killed more than 35 million people since its discovery in 1981. More than 37 million people are living with HIV, and mothers continue to pass the virus in startling numbers to their children. Life-saving anti-retroviral treatments cost as little as 30 cents a day, yet most living with HIV won’t see medicine in

their lifetime. (RED)’s critical work provides access to life-saving HIV/AIDS programs in sub-Saharan Africa, which is home to more than two thirds of the world’s HIVpositive population. One hundred percent of all money raised by (RED) goes directly to Global Fund HIV/ AIDS grants that provide testing, counselling, treatment and prevention programs with a specific focus on eliminating transmission of the virus from mothers to their babies. Since it was founded, (RED) has generated more than $465 million for the Global Fund, with more than $130 million from Apple alone.

Young robbers jailed Two young men aged 19 and 25 have been found guilty for their part in five robberies involving violence and intimidation towards minors in Orihuela. The 19 and 25-year-old are now serving time for the assaults – in which they disguised their faces and wielded large knives. The two used verbal intimidation to extract money and phones from their victims.

Elche April bike initiative Residents of Elche are being encouraged to take to the streets on their bicycles for the month of April.

by Andy Mansell The City have chosen to take part in '30 dias en bici,' a global campaign aiming to promote the use of bikes as an alternative to cars. Those who agree to take part must register and use their bikes every day for the month of April and share their experience on social media. Launching the campaign this week, Head of Mobility at Elche Town Hall, Esther Diaz, explained â€œEvidence shows that when someone performs the same activity for at least 21 consecutive days, the body becomes accustomed and doesn't forget â€œ. She has already registered to take part herself, to promote awareness of health and protection of the environment of the City. Organisers of the Worldwide '30 Days of Biking' Campaign have a serious message to get across, as their aim is to encourage participants to raise sponsorship for their efforts.

Funds raised will go towards mobilising students, healthcare workers and entrepreneurs in developing countries. Last year almost nine thousand people took part globally. Participants can share their experiences with fellow bikers by using the hashtag #30daysofbiking on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. One of the promoters of the campaign in Elche, Fernandez saez has set up a facebook page '30 dias en bici Elche' for citizens taking part to post photos and share their efforts. Five thousand bikers on tour Next month five thousand bikes will set off on a 30km journey across San Javier and Santiago de La Ribera on the Ruta Mototuristica Por La Vida. by Andy Mansell The event now in it's 22nd year aims to promote the feeling of the true biker and is organised by Casiano Navarro-Soto from the association Todos Contra la Droga Ámbito Nacional, an anti-drugs body. The event,which takes place on Sunday 23rd April, has the full backing of the San Javier Town Hall and Mayor José Miguel Luengo highlighted the social nature of the Route "for it's work in raising awareness about true motorcycling, road safety, good driving practices, and it's appeal against drugs." He also hopes to appeal to younger motorcyclists. The Route, similar to a bicycle ride, travels 30 km from the meeting point at the fairground next to the auditorium Víctor Villegas de Murcia. The motorcyclists will set off slowly and circulate in an orderly manner. They will all be provided with a Spanish flag to fly on their machine and other gifts. Event organiser, Navarro-Soto explained

the route is "unique in Spain and probably in Europe", and fully endosrsed by the Ministry of Interior. "2,800 bikes are already registered and we await the normal avalanche of bookings that occur in early April, So we expect to exceed 5,000 bikes, and 7,000 people, since at least 20% have escorts" he said. The promoter, who is president and national coordinator of the All Against Drugs Association rejected any claims of negative image towards the world of the motorcycle,

Santa Pola fundraiser

This weekend kids in Santa Pola have the chance to attend a fantastic fun day out whilst helping to raise money towards important research into a rare disease. On Saturday March 26 the charity AMPA Hispanidad are holding their 4th Supporters day which aims to raise money for the rare genetic disease 22Q which is particularly prevalent in children. The fun kicks off at 11am and takes place in Glorieta Square. Amongst the activities on offer for children to enjoy are clay modelling, macaroni necklace making, colouring, face painting and workshops. The organisers are also holding a treasure hunt with prizes for the winners. There will also be a supportive street market selling toys and other items, with all proceeds going directly to the 22Q Levante research fund. Children are also asked to bring along toiletries and personal hygiene products, which will be donated to the Cruz Roja for distribution to local needy youngsters.

More than 500 foreign athletes train in Torrevieja More than 500 athletes from different countries used the facilities of the Ciudad Deportiva de Torrevieja; The Sports City, to prepare for their preseason or their winter break. The data refers to the figures that the Sports Tourism Unit has been compiling up until mid-February, announced Sports Councillor Víctor Ferrández, who also noted that they are in advanced talks about the possibility that the Finnish Athletics Federation "will choose our city as a training venue for The next three years." Víctor Ferrández explained that "the Finnish Athletics Federation, with its delegation of marathon runners, has visited Torrevieja to study the possibilities of using the Sports City facilities as their Winter training centre for the next 3 years." He also reported that until last February 12th, Torrevieja was the destination chosen by more than 500 athletes for Sports Tourism. During the winter, Norwegian athlete Marthe Myhre made Torrevieja her winter home and continued her preparations to face the challenges of the new season in her country. Athlete Stuart Spencer also returned to Torrevieja for the second time to prepare for athletic competitions. Stuart and Marthe were proclaimed champions of the last edition of the Half Marathon in Torrevieja. Throughout the winter the great majority of sportspeople who have chosen Torrevieja for their training are footballers from Norway and Sweden. "All these teams have found in Torrevieja a perfect organization for their sports holidays: quality facilities and all this together with the rest of what the city can offer," said the Councillor. Kjelsas, Gimletroll, Kill Hemne, Banik Ostrava, Mosjoen, Gran, Harestua, Sylling IF, Stabaek and Lyn are the football teams that have visited the Sports City and the Stabaek academy has designed a multisports campus. All have been delighted with the facilities and noted their "total satisfaction of the experience and for all they have been able to do in Torrevieja." At the moment, the students of the Danish institute Solrod are training in Torrevieja, practicing soccer, volleyball and other outdoor activities such as cycling and running.

Wettest winter on record by Keith Nicol After a very dry winter last year, the winter of 2016/17 has gone into the record books as the wettest winter on record. It didn't take much to upset the record books, but three or four continuous days of downpours, and freezing conditions that put snow on some beaches, such as Torrevieja for the first time in over 100 years, were enough to write new records. Keeping reports on the weather in Valencia and Alicante dates back to 1864 and apparently there had not been this much rain since authorities began keeping weather records. This winter we received around two and a half times the considered normal rain levels for the winter season and according to Jorge Tamayo, the Valencia representative for the Spanish weather agency Aemet, their forecasts indicate that the same sort of intense weather events will occur more frequently in future due to climate change. In terms of the weather, winter is looked upon as the months of December, January and February. This year the Mediterranean region received its fair share of rain and gale-force winds, plus the unexpected snow storm in January that dropped snow on beaches along the entire coastline, closed schools and left thousands of drivers stranded. The beaches of Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa, Guardamar, Jávea and Dénia, in Alicante province, were covered in up to 10 centimetres of snow. The combination of cold temperatures coupled with strong winds, felled power lines and left thousands of homes without power. Along with the rain and high winds, millions of euros of damage were caused by high sea swells which caused many beaches to disappear and sidewalks and beachfront properties needing major repair. The flip side side is that Torrevieja has already registered temperatures up into the 30's and weather experts are expecting temperatures above the historical average during the Spring.

Euromillon's €375,000 in Guardamar

The winning combination of the Euromillions draw from last Tuesday, March 21, 2017, contained the numbers 1, 20, 23, 44 and 47. The stars were 4 and 11. The proceeds of the draw amounted to 37,802.184,20 euros. Since there were no outright winners with registered tickets of the First Category (five numbers plus two stars), the next drawing, tonight Friday, will have a guaranteed fund of 37 million euros. In Spain, a winning ticket of the Second Category (five numbers and a star) was validated as having been sold in the Lottery Administration number 1 of Guardamar del Segura (Alicante), with the winner awarded 373,296.57€. All smiles for St. Patrick's Day

by Keith Nicol Everyone is Irish on St. Patricks Day and in Cabo Roig more than 8,000 people lined the streets and turning the strip Green. After a few wet days earlier in the week, the sun shone brightly on the Irish, with activities starting around noon, with music and entertainment provided by TKO Radio. This year's parade was full of colour and spectacle, from marching bands, to Cowboys and Indians, Transformers, stilt walkers, Pirates of the Caribbean, classic cars and bikes, Irish Thatched cottages, carnival dancers and of course, St. Patrick leading the parade. At three on the dot, a few words of welcome were given to the crowd from Parade Grand Marshall Eamon Scanlon,

the Teachta Dála for the Sligo–Leitrim constituency, regular visitor Paudge Connolly from County Monaghan along with Orihuela mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, the deputy mayor, Rafael Almagro, and Councillors Sofia Alvarez and Luisa Bone. At 3:15pm it was time to start up the engines of over 30 custom motorcycles and a bevy of classic cars who performed two laps of honour to announce the start of the Parade proper before the Torrevieja pipes and drums led the way along with St. Patraick, dignitaries and the dozens of floats. This year there were three prizes on offer along with the Donald Rafferty Trophy and a prize of 500 euro in cash. First prize went to the thatched cottage built by Leddy Contractors, followed by a few tiny builders handing out sweets to

the crowd, followed by the Trinity cottage and the Cabo Roig Surfers with Sun Sea Adventures complete with mermaids. Director Paul Leddy was thrilled to win the first prize and donated the 500€ prize money to the Elche Children's Home. TKO Radio keep the music going after the parade and for the first time, the festival stretched into the following day with music played by local groups Streeters and Kolted kept the party going on Saturday evening. Congratulations must be handed out to the organising committee of Cabo Roig Traders Association who spent many months volunteering their time and putting the event together and are now looking for an even bigger and better event for 2018. Guardamar launches APP

Guardamar has become the latest local municipality to catch up with the digital revolution by introducing a new APP. The municipality's APP offers useful information about the town such as the calendar of events, pharmacies on duty, shopping and a street map. The diputado de Buen Gobierno, Adrián Ballester, presented the APP to the press alongside the mayor of Guardamar del Segura, José Luis Sáez , the new website of the town. The Diputación de Alicante, through 'Modern Plan 7.0' has been in charge of developing this portal, that's more dynamic and interactive than previous efforts. The APP offers residents and visitors the opportunity to find out information and carry out administrative procedures in a fast and simple way, plus providing a significant economic saving for the City Council. "Through Plan Moderniza 7.0, the Diputación de Alicante is working, among other aspects, to create a more modern public administration, more transparent and that's closer to the citizens. The creation of web pages is a service that we offer from the Provincial institution and that does not involve any cost to municipalities. Moreover, in the case of Guardamar del Segura, this action has allowed them to save more than 12,000€, " explained the deputy. The collaboration between both administrations can be found by searching for 'MunicipApp' , a mobile application driven by the provincial institution that offers users useful information of the municipality such as the calendar of events, pharmacies on duty, street maps, local news, press releases, contact numbers and information. The App covers a number of local municipalities, such as Albatera, Algorfa, Almoradi, Benferri, Benijofar, Callosa de Segura, Catral, Cox, Daya Nueva, Daya Vieja, Dolores, Formentera, Hondon, Jacarilla, Novelda, Orihuela, Rafal, Redovan, Rojales, San Fulgencio and San Miguel, along with Guardamar. One possible downside is that the App is presently only available in Spanish or Valencian.

Murcia's Fiesta del Deporte If you or the family are looking for some new fun activities to participate in this summer, you might wish to check out the Fiesta del Deporte in Murcia. by Keith Nicol Up to 60 different disciplines can be practiced alone or by the family: it's free and without registration, over the weekend of April 1st and 2nd. Think to yourself: What sports activity have you dreamed of practicing but never been able to do? Baseball, fencing, badminton, skateboarding, boxing, archery, billiards, kickboxing or maybe even motorcycling? Over the weekend of 1st and 2nd April, the Murcia City Council offers all this, in collaboration with 60 sports federations; totally free of charge; without prior registration, and including insurance. This is the II Sports Festival, and details were presented by the Mayor, José Ballesta, and the president of the Union of Sports Federations of the Region of Murcia, José María López Gullón. It will be a fun and sporting event for the whole family, which will fill the main areas of the city with exhibitions, workshops and activities for all audiences. The activities take place all over the city including the Jose Barnés Sports Centre, Prince of Asturias Pavilion and adjacent areas, Nuevo Cagigal, IES Infante, Fofó Auditorium and Park, Mar Menor heated pool, skateboard area, Jose Barnés artificial turf field and La Vega sports courts. all happens on Saturday, April 1, from 9am to 8pm and Sunday 2nd, from 9am to 2pm. Sports activities: rhythmic gymnastics, billiards, archery, judo, table tennis, triathlon, kickboxing, petanque, skateboarding, cycling, skating, track and field, tennis, volleyball, parkour, trampoline, boxing, bowling, chess, basketball, zumba, fencing, aeronautics, swimming, motorcycling, hockey, badminton, athletics, football and rowing, among others. Ballesta explained that, unlike last year when the event lasted only one day, this edition will be held for two days. "We want to double the participation of last year and reach upwards of 30,000 attendees." Participants will receive theoretical and practical knowledge on regulation and technical skills. Educational workshops have been organized for all ages, Mar Menor pool dive classes, baseball batting with a pitcher plus activities for people with disabilities.

23rd Habaneras Youth Competition in Torrevieja This week details were finalized for this year’s Habaneras Choral Competition, which wll take place on April 28th and 29th at the Town’s International Auditorium. The competition, now in it’s 23rd year, will be truly international with choirs competing from Russia, Ukraine, Slovakia and Columbia. In addition, representatives from Galicia, Domingo Soler Andalucia,Valencia and Madrid will also take part. Domingo Soler, Vice President of the Board of Trustees for the Habaneras Patronage announced that the organisers were very happy with the standard of compettors this year. He said, “ The quality of the choirs competing this year shows that choral singing is in very good health”. He explained that choir members were all born in 1999 or afterwards and added “Our competition is highly regarded and the choirs know, once selected they have a unique and responsible challenge. They all want to prove they have a place in the choral world where better to perform than Torrevieja, the cradle of the habanera”. The habanera is a form of popular dance music from Cuba, dating back to the 19th Century and all choirs must perform in one single performance, three habaneras with Spanish text, one of which is obligatory for all contestants. They must also sing a song of international repute from their own country as a free choice. After which, the jury comprising of David Colado, Ruth Revert and Josu Elberdin, all well known names from the choral scene, will undertake the difficult task of choosing a winner. Whilst the jury deliberate all the choirs will take to the stage to sing the obligatory Habanera ‘Entre Dos Mares’ in full unison. The winning choir will receive a prize of €3000, the runner up €2000 and third place receives €1000, plus they all get a trophy. The Spanish Classic Scene

Guardamar half marathon

Coinciding with World Water Day which was celebrated on Wednesday 22 March, Aqualia launched a new edition of its annual children’s digital competition. This year’s competition, ‘Mission Purification’ aims to create awareness about the water cycle – from when the water is used in our homes until it is returned to the environment. Aqualia wants to educate children in a fun, interactive way about how wastewater can be reused for various purposes through use of the animated characters ‘Hero Hydrokid’ and ‘Superaqua’. The deadline for submission of entries runs from March 22 to May 23. This Sunday March 26th, Guadarmar de Segura will be in race mode as their annual half marathon takes to the streets of the town. The 21km race begins at 9.30am in Avenida Cervantes and follows a low level, figure eight route taking in the both the beachfront area and the town centre. Roads will be closed on the day to allow spectators to get a good view as they cheer the competitors on. There will be medals for male and female winners aswell as for winners of the various age categories. Food Confusion

As computer users, we are all familiar with the constant flow of advice on what we should or should not be eating and what supplements we should be swallowing in order to maintain good health.

Usually they are marketing ploys to purchase unnecessary and ineffectual products, but sometimes they appear to be sound advice on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It is certainly a minefield for the unwary and positively dangerous for individuals who believe everything they read on the internet and are compulsive buyers. But even more dangerous is the advice that so called experts are constantly bombarding us with via press reports. Dangerous because what they tell us today about the benefits or perils of consuming certain common food and drink items, will be invariably turned around a full 360 degrees months later. Only recently the Princess informed me she had read, that osteoarthritis can be exacerbated by eating tomatoes. She was concerned because my favourite breakfast is grilled tomatoes and eggs on toast and I have a mild condition in my fingers which causes me to lose my grip on the beer glass I am holding – even though it only occurs when said glass is empty. Also of course, eat too many eggs and your cholesterol levels will go through the roof, so it looks as

if I’m doomed. But just a minute, that was last year, because now the ‘experts’ are saying that eggs are recommended and that two a day is ideal. This about-turn principle applies to just about every food item you can think of with sugar the big talking point right now. Sure, we can all see that our sugar intake and its relationship to obesity and the epidemic proportions of diabetes is inextricably linked, but when we are told to only drink sugar free beverages, we are being led down a very dangerous road indeed, because the sugar substitute aspartame has been proven to cause alarming side effects and even death. So why has it not been banned? Ask yourself just who it is that funds all of the expensive contradictory research that seems to have been designed to confuse. And who will it be, as always, who will come galloping to the rescue with yet another wonder drug to calm our fears? We should not be angry that our health has been deliberately endangered in the name of corporate greed, we should be furious.

When I was a young lad in Junior Secondary School, I had a wonderful teacher by the name of Kathleen Hatton. She was an adorable, hard working creature who had an absolute passion for the Arts. Amongst the subjects she taught were Geography, Ballet for boys and girls (not this boy I’m pleased to say!} , and the English language. One morning I came into the classroom to find that she had written in chalk on the blackboard: ‘The English language is one of the most beautiful in the world.’ I have always remembered this, and so many years later when I discovered that Miss Hatton was spending her final days in a Nursing Home, I dedicated one of my books, THE CHANDLER’S DAUGHTER, to her. She wrote back ‘Thank you for making my life worthwhile’. I only tell you this story because at the age of 92 Miss Hatton started to learn Spanish, and became, I am told, quite proficient in it. It has often been said that when it comes to travelling to foreign countries the Brits are the laziest in the world, and in particular when they are going on holiday or settling down as expats in Europe. ‘They should learn to speak English’ says the ill-informed British tourist. Why, I ask? This is Spain where the spoken language is Spanish – Espagnol. But, as we all know there are always two sides to any argument. Let’s face it, if you are five years old your brain is fresh enough to absorb any language or complicated new technology, but if you are of an advanced age it can be a real struggle to take things in, especially if you have taken the brave step to move to another country, like Spain. What is it about the elderly human brain that positively resists any attempt to try to understand something new? I remember, when I first arrived in Spain, even the sound of the locals speaking the language scared the daylights out of me. It was all so fast, like a machine gun being fired at me. For the next few weeks I tried to make sense of Spanish newspapers, watched with a totally blank mind Spanish television hoping that I would be able to pick out a word here and there that resembled English, and making an absolute fool of myself in a café where I said ‘Buenos noches’ to the waitress at ten o’clock in the morning. Since then, however, my confidence has grown. In Supermarkets I now know how to ask for lamb’s liver and toilet paper in Spanish, but I have to admit that on one occasion my ego took a bit of a blow when, in perfect tourist guide book Spanish I stopped a burly looking road worker to ask him where I could find the nearest men’s toilet. His response was grim and threatening and when he called across a man from the Guardia Civil I soon understood why. ‘I hope it is the hombre’s toilet you are looking for Senor,’ he said with a thick English accent, ‘and not for the Senora?’ I have to say that since I first arrived in Spain fifteen years ago, great strides have been made amongst the British community to get to know the language. Spanish classes have been set up in people’s homes, there are one to one sessions in bars and restaurants, and many of the local authorities are offering free lessons to expats of all ages. And so dear readers, it’s up to us. If we are serious about getting to know the language of our hosts, no matter what our age, it boils down to concentration and perseverance. Not easy. The initiative was inspired by the need to keep British money and jobs in Britain. It wasn’t much of a success. If today we were to remove foreign made products from our homes I doubt even the wallpaper would be left. Britain’s governing elite today promote a Buy Russian campaign. As a consequence, 144 million Russians now take pride in their country’s growing self-sufficiency and economic buoyancy. Not much of an EU strategy if their anti-Russian embargo adds to European Union impoverishment. The anti-Russian economic blockade cost the UK £10 billion in 2015 and hasn’t recovered. Trade between the UK and Russia is down 50 per cent and has cost the EU $60.2 billion. As I write, 2.3 million, mostly Russian and Ukrainian citizens of Crimea, celebrate their freedom from Soviet imposed Ukrainian colonialism. Crimea’s economy has improved considerably. Their tourist industry, enjoying a 20 per cent increase in tourism, is now placing table cloths out for an estimated 6 million highspending Russian tourists expected during 2017. Spain grimaced when in 2015 Russian tourism dropped by 32 per cent. It gets worse; the Russians are high spenders and only the Chinese exceed their spending power. I am looking for a second hand car to buy. I have been told that if I buy an English car and drive it back I will never be able to sell it if I wish to do so in the future as it will be a right hand drive. Why are are the spanish second hand cars here in such bad condition? I have looked on English websites and the cars are immaculate and cheaper but yet here every car is either far too expensive for what it is or they are covered in marks and dents. I have witnessed many a time someone just opened their car door on to somebody elses. Why can't people in Spain either park properly or just look after their cars or have respect for other peoples. I have recently moved to Spain. We have two children and two dogs. Over the winter months we enjoyed going the beach with our dogs. They loved the space and the water. We was told they are not allowed on the beach come the summer. With a large fine if so. Please could you tell me the rules regarding dogs on the beach. Protecting the kids The weather was beautiful at the weekend. My family and I spent the day down the beach. I only had sun cream from last summer as I havent even thought about beach weather yet. On the night I noticed that my youngest daugther had burnt her face and shoulders. Please can someone tell me the expiry date on sun cream, even though it says so on the tub. Do they last longer than a year? The cream I had was a childrens high factor product which I brought last summer, but yet she still caught the sun and burnt. Do we have to buy new ones every year? Why don't they last?

New research shows ‘hyperactives’ are more likely to become entrepreneurs New research from Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) finds that those diagnosed with hyperactivity - one of the main symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) - are more likely to become entrepreneurs. Too often hyperactivity is associated with low job performance and a greater chance of becoming unemployed rather than offering the potential to become successful business people. Surveys of more than 20,000 in Sweden and the Netherlands came to the overwhelming conclusion that those living with this behaviour are more likely to start their own company. The figures also showed that a low percentage reported to be previously unemployed before becoming an entrepreneur. The report suggests that becoming an entrepreneur can be a positive career move for those with hyperactivity, fitting their specific talents and harnessing their highly re-active minds. The high energy levels associated with this trait can support those taking the initiative, being risk averse and running a business. The study was not a clinical diagnosis of hyperactivity, but instead looked at behavioural tendencies, suggesting that healthy individuals also experience such symptoms to some extent. Therefore, it included respondents reporting no or low levels of symptoms. Ingrid Verheul of Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) and a team of colleagues set out to confirm

through empirical research that hyperactivity is a catalyst to being an entrepreneur. She said: ‘This research could have a significant effect to destigmatise hyperactivity or ADHD because it demonstrates that they have the potential to turn their hand to entrepreneurship. I can imagine that it may help young people to consider this career move as an alternative to wage-employment in which they often experience problems. Obviously, there is also a role for educators and parents here to point out the possibilities.’ Verheul added: ‘Statistics shows that in the USA there’s been a 43 per cent growth in young people with ADHD and that in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy and Brazil there has also been a substantial rise.’ ‘Coupled with our research this leads to the expectation that many more ‘hyperactive’ entrepreneurs could be on the horizon. That is, providing they are made aware of the potential fit with self-employment and are guided to take entrepreneurial action.’

Leaving assets to children, especially those who are financially secure and therefore don’t need them, means they are likely to be taxed again before they reach your grandchildren, who are more in need of the funds. Leaving assets to your grandchildren, rather than your children, increasingly makes sense. With people living longer, by the time there is an inheritance it will be the grandchildren who are in greater need financially. If they have to wait for their parents to leave it to them in turn, the assets will be taxed twice before they reach them. It makes sense to discuss this with your children – not least so it does not come as a surprise to them, but also because they may prefer it if you leave assets to their children rather than themselves.

Workers care more about others when jobs are under threat Those enduring change in organisations where jobs are under threat are concerned as much about others as they are of themselves, according to a new study from a team of researchers at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM). In research which analysed employee reactions to 23 change projects in a large police organisation, workers were genuinely worried about what happens to their colleagues and for the fate of the entire organisation. Gabriele Jacobs, who was part of the research team, said: ‘The reaction was totally unexpected as we were anticipating that those interviewed would want to minimise the damage to their own positions and careers. Yet only a minority of people expressed this to us. More voiced concern over what would happen to their colleagues and the organisation as a result of the organisational change.’ Big reorganisations can be fear-inducing events for employees who see their roles and career opportunities affected by new structures and ideas. That’s why managers often assume that employee behaviour – and backlash – against change is driven by self-preservation. Yet, in the study some even said they would consider the change project a failure if their colleagues suffered or if the final result was negative for the organisation at large. They were also worried about how the general public might react to the changes or how the quality of the police service might suffer. After analysing all the interviews, the researchers noticed that most employees tend to form more elaborate opinions about the effects of change than managers often anticipate. They often see various gains and losses in every change, both for themselves, for others and for the organisation. Jacobs added: ‘We observed that people want the gains and losses to be distributed fairly, according to a set of moral standards, even if the organisational changes do not affect them directly, or when the fair treatment of others comes at a personal cost. You could say people are more altruistic than earlier research has suggested.’

UK200Group Accountants react to Philip Hammond’s National Insurance U-Turn

In his spring Budget, Chancellor Philip Hammond announced that National Insurance (NI) contributions for the self-employed in the UK would rise from 9 per cent to 10 per cent in April 2018 and to 11 per cent in 2019, to bring it closer to the 12 per cent currently paid by employees. However, following strong opposition from the self-employed community in the UK, he’s now decided that it will not go ahead. The UK200Group is the UK’s leading membership association of independent chartered accountancy and law firms, whose members act for over 150,000 SMEs and private clients. So what do the UK’s accountants think of the U-turn? Alan Boby, Partner at UK200Group member Ellacotts, said, ‘This is welcome news for the self-employed for now. However, the selfemployed should consider if being self-employed is a long term strategy. It is now more important than ever for self-employed individuals to seek specialist tax advice when deciding which business vehicle to use.’ Francis Whitbread, Partner at UK200Group member firm Edmund Carr, said, ‘the Chancellor's U-turn on the proposed increase in national insurance contributions for the self-employed suggests that those advisers, civil service mandarins or whoever suggested the policy to Mr Hammond in the first place have no idea of what goes on in the real world of SMEs, or what public opinion feels.’ ‘I have a nasty suspicion this is not the only case of Mr Hammond being misinformed. I wrote to the Chancellor before Christmas setting out a number of concerns about Making Tax Digital (MTD). I received a reply on his behalf from HMRC assuring me my fears were groundless. In the recently published consultation on MTD the concerns expressed by the accountancy profession over a number of areas were similarly ignored.' Following on from Francis Whitbread’s comments on MTD, Andrew Jackson, Chair of the UK200Group Tax Panel and Head of Tax at UK200Group member Fiander Tovell said, ‘The proposed NI changes would cost each self-employed person a few hundred pounds; HMRC’s estimates are that MTD will cost each business £280, but this is clearly an underestimate. It would be a great shame if businesses are spared a hike in NI, only to have a more costly MTD burden foisted on them.’

First of all, there are administrative acts which exist that look after the welfare and responsibility of all animals. Additionally, it is legal for Communities of Owners to determine if the ownership of pets is allowed and to limit the number of pets allowed per person or per household in their registered Statutes. This is for owners of the property. The Horizontal Property regime: This looks after the welfare of the rights of and collision of rights of other co-owners in the community.

This applies to animals and animal ownership as well. Meaning that if someone in the community has a pet or pets, this must be allowed in the localityâ€Świthout requiring a zoo license. Under the Horizontal Property regime, you must check the Statutes and internal regulations in order to find about the rules specific to the community about the possession of animals. In addition to this, if continued disturbances were made by any given animal exceeding the normal discomfort of the neighborhood, you

can take judicial action invoking Article 18 LPH. Remember always in the first instance notify the authorities if there is an uncared for pet or an animal in a bad condition. A great day was had by all, both humans and canine at the Little Pod Association’s 4th Dog Show recently. The sun put its hat on for the occasion at El Rancho, Los Montesinos as 80 dogs entered various classes such as ‘Dog most like its owner’ and ‘Waggiest tail’. Nikki G kept the human crowd entertained as she hosted the show, injecting her great sense of humour throughout. The dogs provided entertainment too... especially Theo, who had the audience laughing as he walked around with a mat in his mouth in the ‘Musical mats’ class, ensuring he was never caught without one. Kiwi, a tailless dog won the ‘Waggiest tail’ class and Ruby, who usually likes a sing-along, became shy when Nikki G introduced her to a real-life microphone in the ‘Musical mats’ class.

Little Pod’s very own Scooby, who is currently being fostered but is on the lookout for a permanent home placed second in the ‘Perkiest pensioner’ class and Loba, another ‘Little Podder’ placed second in the ‘Best rescue’ class with her foster mum, Julie. There was something for everyone with craft stalls selling everything from dog treats to handmade birthday cards, delicious homemade jams and marmalades on the Little Pod stall and of course, the ever popular tombola and raffle which saw lots of happy winners. Little Pod Association extends its biggest thanks to all involved, especially all who took part and the four vets from San Anton , who did a splendid job of judging and the sponsors whose support means that the magnificent 2,430€ that was raised can go straight towards paying outstanding vet bills.

Residents with mobility difficulties in a South Costa Blanca town received a boost after a local dance company donated funds from one of their shows. Footwork Dance, based in Los Montesinos used proceeds from ticket sales of their sell out Christmas show Roll Out The Dance Floor to help the local Social Services Department buy several wheelchairs and other mobility aids. The company are already in rehearsals for their next production, A Summer Review, which they are performing at the Casa de Cultura y Musica on Sunday 23rd July. Once again proceeds from ticket sales of the show will go to help the under priviliged of the town. Footwork Dance has students of all ages in their company. In recent examinations overseen by Elizabeth Harris from the International Dance Teachers Association, students taking part ranged in age from 3 to 74 years, proving that dance is for everyone and age is not a barrier to learning new skills. The IDTA is a leading dance qualifications organization, with over seven thousand members in fifty five countries. They define standards across a wide range of dance forms and examine performance for both professionals and non professionals, developing skills and good practice to promote the love of dance. Examiner Miss Harris flew in especially from the UK to officiate during the examinations and students now have a nervous wait before the results are announced during the next few weeks. In past years the company's success rate has been very good, so hopes are high for the studio this year. Spanish foodies 30 per cent more adventurous than Brits The most adventurous in Europe for trying unfamiliar foods. Consumers in Italy and Spain are among the most adventurous in Europe for trying unfamiliar foods, with much of Scandinavia and the UK lagging behind, according to research from travel company Expedia. In a survey of 14 major Western European markets, it found that more than 90 per cent people in Italy, Spain, Switzerland and France were ‘open-minded’ to trying new foods when travelling abroad. That compares to less than 60 per cent in both Finland and the UK, propping up the list. Norway was the most adventurous Scandinavian country – 81 per cent of respondents said that they would eat something for the first time while travelling – but in general the Scandinavian countries, as well as Ireland and Belgium, all performed poorly. Alex Platts, commercial director of Northern Europe for Brand Expedia, said: ‘Our survey highlighted that the UK is far below the average and showed the least willingness to try new food of all 14 of the countries studied. ‘Perhaps this means that Brits know what they like and are content to stick to it, but it also could point to them feeling a little hesitant or struggling to know how to broaden our horizons. ‘There’s nothing wrong with knowing what you like and keeping to it but there is also a world of food out there to be experienced and enjoyed, and we want to help as many people discover it.’ Despite the results, Expedia found that one-third of Brits were influenced by food when deciding where to travel on holiday. Travellers from the UK, the study found, were more likely to experiment with Spanish and Italian cuisine than less familiar food cultures, such as Japanese or Vietnamese. They were also more likely to be satisfied with the quality of restaurant service in their home country: despite its reputation, Brits voted the quality of table service in their own country the second best in Europe, beaten only by Italy.

For a small donation to Rock Against Cancer, you can enjoy a waffle, or a choice of Tea Cakes or Cinnamon Rolls, provided by Moritz Bakery from the Scandinavian Centre, in Torrevieja. Kristin and Ståle Soltvedt have more than 30 years experience in baking bread and making cakes, here in Spain and back in their native Norway. Moritz Bakery has now been open for 14 years in Torrevieja and they specialise in baking daily fresh bread, especially Norwegian bread, which if you haven’t tried you should, as it is tastier than normal bread. Kristin explained that: “it is the flour that makes the difference, the normal flour available here in Spain is weaker, which is why Spanish bread goes stale after one day, where as Norwegian bread lasts longer without any preservatives.” Moritz have donated 300 Tea Cakes and Cinnamon Rolls to the event. Every Sunday the Norwegian Church serves up hundreds of Norwegian Waffles to one and all who attend services or stop by. They prepare their own special waffle mix, which produces a light and fluffy waffle, perfect as a sweet pastry and available at the event. I can understand if you have premonition that it may be quite scary sometimes. It certainly is my least favourite ability, but it rears up its head from time to time and I cannot avoid it. Whilst the many years of my experience have greatly helped me to eliminate any fear I might have had, to have visions about the future, as sharp as premonition, may be very scary. It comes up with me when the message has to get through to warn me, though often I am powerless to do anything about what I see. Skincare solutions with Sally Curson Ditch the cleansing wipes and pick up the egg whites! Sally Curson launched her skincare range, Face Matters in 2012 after 20 years in the beauty business. Disappointed with results from other products on the market, Sally found that despite high prices and lavish promises, the visible effects never lived up to expectation. Sally has one simple aim: to harness nature and to help hold back time. RTN spoke exclusively with Sally to find out what remedies she would recommend to our readers: What are the main skincare problems that you see affecting clients aged 40+? Mainly dehydration and sun damage. Most people have some sort of skincare routine but aren’t necessarily using the right products to target their skin concerns. And younger clients? Irritated skin and congestion from blocked pores – cleansing wipes and granular exfoliants although speedy aren’t particularly effective. What advice would you give to RTN readers suffering these problems? Choose your skincare wisely. You are usually better to select a skincare specialist brand rather than a cosmetic/colour brand where you should get more pure and active ingredients rather than synthetic man-made and cheaper bulking ingredients. Exfoliation is key to glowing healthy skin but you are better to use a gentle naturally foaming wash with a face cloth to remove dead skin cells than wipes and granular

products – better for the environment, too! Once you have thoroughly cleansed select a nourishing product that can be used day and night if you want to keep it simple. No need for bathroom cupboards groaning with products. Invest in one or two quality items instead. Aside from using sunscreen, what can you recommend to help prevent skin damage and ageing at the hands of the sun? SPF is key obviously but keep applying hand cream all year round too. I perform an Icon treatment on the hands in my Hampshire studio using a brightening serum which has a wonderful effect to brighten and tone the skin on the back of ageing hands. For those on a budget, what home remedies would you recommend for brighter, more youthful looking skin? Home made face masks are wonderful. Two of the best are the most simple; cover the skin in pieces of tissue paper and then using a face brush or foundation brush apply egg white over the top. Leave to dry and then peel the tissue away. Skin will feel firm and toned and fresh. For a quick exfoliant and boost dissolve aspirin into water until you mix a thin paste and then apply all over with a brush. Leave for 10-15 minutes and wash away. Supersoft skin... Ta dah! Is there anything our younger readers can do now to look after their skin and fight the inevitable aging process?

Absolutely. Cleanse thoroughly as I mention above and always use a sunscreen but don’t look for this in your skincare. An SPF lasts for such a short period of time and nobody carries their day cream around and re-applies every 30 minutes; instead opt for a foundation, mineral powder or tinted moisturiser with an SPF that will sit on the surface on the skin and protect all day long. What constitutes good oral health?

World Oral Health Day (WOHD) was celebrated on Monday this week. WOHD was launched by FDI World Dental Federation (FDI) to raise global awareness on the prevention and control of oral disease and this year they released the results from a survey carried out in 12 countries, revealing what people around the world believe to be good oral health practices. The survey was carried out in the UK, the US, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Poland, South Africa, India and Egypt and has exposed a significant disparity between what people believe to be good oral health practices, versus what they actually do. Eight of the countries reported that 50 percent or more of the people surveyed think it is important to brush your teeth straight after every main meal. Brazil, Mexico, Egypt and Poland were the worst offenders of this incorrect oral health practice (84 per cent, 81 per cent, 62 per cent and 60 per cent respectively). FDI recommends waiting at least 30 minutes after eating to brush your teeth to avoid weakening tooth enamel. ‘These survey results highlight an alarming discrepancy between knowledge and actual good oral health practices,’ said Dr Patrick Hescot, FDI President. ‘We want everyone to take control of their oral health this World Oral Health Day and understand that by adopting good oral hygiene habits, avoiding risk factors and having a regular dental check-up, they can help protect their mouths. A healthy mouth allows us to speak, smile, smell, taste, touch, chew, swallow and convey a range of emotions with confidence and without pain, discomfort and disease. Good oral health matters and translates to a better quality of life.’ The majority of countries surveyed incorrectly believe that rinsing the mouth out with water after brushing is important; Brazil, South Africa, Mexico, India and Canada were found to practice this myth the most (77 per cent, 75 per cent, 73 per cent, 67 per cent and 67 per cent respectively). It is actually recommended not to rinse with water straight after brushing to allow maximum exposure to fluoride, which will optimize the preventative effects. Nearly half the population surveyed in India, South Africa, Brazil and Poland (52 per cent, 49 per cent, 48 per cent and 42 per cent respectively), felt that drinking fruit juice rather than fizzy drinks was important for good oral health. Fruit juice however, can also be high in sugar which can cause tooth decay. FDI recommends keeping consumption of sugary drinks to a minimum as part of a healthy, balanced diet. Dr Edoardo Cavalle, WOHD Task Team Chair, stated ‘Understanding good oral health practices and adopting them early in life, will help to maintain optimal oral health into old age and ensure you live a long life free from physical pain and often emotional suffering caused by oral disease.’

How to grow a pallet garden With so many people becoming more conscious of repurposing rather than impacting on landfill with unnecessary waste, gardening with wooden pallets has never been more popular.

Moving from a creative idea to a garden trend, today, gardeners are using pallets for planting everything from herbs to succulents. We’ve all seen them, used wooden pallets leant up beside markets and shops, waiting to go to the Ecoparque. Then someone thought of bringing those wooden pallets into the garden and planting veggies, flowers or other plants between the bars. Gardening with wooden pallets is an easy and inexpensive way to create a vertical planting area when space is tight. If you are wondering how to grow a pallet garden, all you need is a roll of landscaping paper, sandpaper, a staple gun and staples, hammer and nails and some potting soil. And of course, your plants! Follow these instructions to get started: 1. Sand down any rough spots on your pallet. If the back of your pallet doesn’t have much support, find some scrap wood, roughly 3 to 4 inches wide and 1/4 inch thick (or the thickness of the rest of your supports) and cut it down to the width of your pallet. Using two nails on each side, add supports so they are roughly even down the back of your pallet. 2. Double or triple up your landscaping fabric and begin the stapling fun. Staple fabric along the back, bottom and sides of the pallet, taking care at the corners to fold in the fabric so no soil will spill out. 3. Lay the pallet flat and pour potting soil through slats, pressing soil down firmly. Leave enough room to begin planting your succulents. 4. Begin planting, starting at the bottom of the pallet and ending at the top. Make sure soil is firmly packed in each layer as you move up. Add more soil as needed so that plants are tightly packed at the end. 5. Water your wall garden thoroughly and let it remain horizontal for 1 to 2 weeks to allow plants to take root. After 1 to 2 weeks, you can set it upright. Use your creativity to think of different pallet gardening ideas to try. You can start vegetable gardening with wooden pallets, create a fragrance garden or grow small succulents. Once you’ve started planting in wooden pallets in the garden, many other ideas will come to you. DIY pallet gardening is fun, and takes up very little room.

Can painting over ceramic tiles ever be successful?

Every year, gardening enthusiasts set out with just a spade and a dream, hoping to beautify their outside space, only to find their hopes dashed because they made one of the three most common gardening faux pas. Avoid making the same mistakes and finding yourself mid-summer wondering where it all went wrong. Not labeling plants Always label the seeds you have sown Aside from remembering where you planted last spring; you can also keep track of which seedlings are which during the early days when many plants look exactly the same. Labeling young plants ensures that they are watered, fertilised and cared for according to their needs. Having unrealistic expectations Some plants are easier than others to grow, so having a go at a small number of a variety of plants will allow you to test the waters and see how much you really have time to commit to. Even more so if this is your first year planting a vegetable or flower garden, try not to overdo it. The dream of having a large and thriving garden is a lofty goal and as any experienced gardening expert will tell you, a lot of work. Planting the wrong thing Be sure to read up on the plants you intend to grow and make sure they are suited to your garden and climate. Some plants sprawl wide and low and can take over entire areas of the garden that you would rather they didn’t. Other plants require a lot of water, or more sunlight than your garden provides. Read the labels, choose what best aligns with your space, climate and goals and then decide which of those you want to plant.

How many times do you look at the kitchen or bathroom tiles in your home and think …. I hate you? Tiling lasts forever, but styles and colours quickly go out of fashion leaving important rooms in your house or apartment looking hideously outdated. Re-tiling can be expensive for those on a budget, so a cheaper option is painting over the tile work to give a fresher, more modern image. There are two important components to painting ceramic tiling, these are, preparing the surface properly and using the right type of paint. Here’s how to go about painting tile. As with most painting jobs, preparation is the key to success. To prepare tile for painting: • Clean Tile: Clean the tile to remove any dirt, mildew, or soap scum using an abrasive bathroom cleaner. After cleaning, wipe the surface down with a clean, wet sponge to remove any residue, then allow the surface to dry thoroughly. • Sand Tile: Lightly sand the tile with fine (180-220 grit) synthetic grit sandpaper, such as silicon carbide

or aluminium oxide, to take the gloss off the glazed surface. An orbital sander will do a faster and better job than hand sanding. • Remove Dust: Wipe down the surface with a damp cloth to remove any dust and allow to dry before painting. Painting There are two painting options for tiles: 1. Latex Paint: Apply one to two coats of a bonding primer that’s made to adhere to surfaces such as tile. Allow the primer to dry for the recommended time, then follow with two topcoats of acrylic latex wall paint. 2. Epoxy Paint: Apply two coats of a two-part epoxy paint that’s made for tile and other hard to paint surfaces, such as Rust-Oleum Tub & Tile. Follow the directions carefully, and allow the recommended drying time before using. The colours available for epoxy paint may be limited. Follow these instructions carefully and you will transform your home without the mess, noise and cost of re-tiling.

‘Indestructible’ Nokia 3310 is back At the end of February, the Nokia 3310 was officially relaunched. The device first went on sale in the year 2000 and has since sold over 126 million units across the globe, making it one of the world’s best loved phones. HMD, the Finnish company which purchased the rights to Nokia’s name in December 2016, is retailing the phone at just over £40 (46€). With such a low price point, it is hoped the new version could become just as popular as the original cult classic. With the 3310’s plastic shell and clicky buttons, the phone is renowned for its toughness and has long endured as an internet meme due to seemingly being indestructible. Famous for its durability, a quick Google search for Nokia 3310 insurance will throw up thousands of results, with

prices starting as low as 10p a month – the cheapest phone insurance in the world. Earlier in February, it was revealed Ex-Soldier and original Nokia 3310 owner Dave Mitchell is still using the phone he purchased almost two decades ago. The Prancing Horse celebrates 70 years Enzo Ferrari, founder of the luxury car marque, once famously said “The best Ferrari is the next one”. So to celebrate their 70th birthday this year, the company which bears his name, lined up their very latest model alongside the first model they produced, dating from 1947 outside their factory gates in Maranello Italy. Seventy years ago the Ferrari 125S was the first road production model to feature the iconic prancing horse badge and was only introduced reluctantly by Enzo to fund the development of racing cars for the Motor Racing team which still bears his name today. He had previously spent ten years working for Alfa Romeo, heading up their Scuderia Ferrari racing department. In 1938, Alfa Romeo brought it’s racing team in-house, with the formation of Alfa Corse in Milano, effectively disbanding Scuderia Ferrari. Enzo, was taken on as manager of the new team, but left a year later. He was then forced to sign an agreement promising not to use the Ferrari name in association with races or racing cars for at least four years. He therefore formed a company called Auto Avio Construzioni and spent the next eight years, throughout World War 2 working on production, later reforming Scuderia Ferrari, which literally means Ferrari Stable, or Team Ferrari, as it known today. The newest model, their limited-edition hypercar, the LaFerrari Aperta, has an eye watering price tag of around €1.2 million and is considered to be the most expensive car ever sold. It’s

celebrity owners include Kitchen Nightmares chef Gordon Ramsey, who has been filmed driving his around London for the Top Gear TV show. This year, Ferrari will commemorate their seventy year anniversary, by producing seventy bespoke cars. Each one of these liveries will be created just the once and will include at least one car from every model in their current range. All of these supercars, destined to become much cherished collectors items, come complete with a 70th Anniversary logo, and a name plate stating the model that inspired it. Last December the company also unveiled their limited edition model, the J50, produced to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ferrari in Japan. Only 10 of these will be built. Jaguar I-Pace tested on London’s Roads London saw Jaguar’s I-Pace for the first time recently, as it was trialled on London’s roads. Due to be released at the end of the year, Jaguar’s new electric vehicle is said to be capable of 0-60 in around 4 seconds and 500km on a single charge. Hat trick boost for CD Torry A second half hat trick from midfielder Sergio Duran, helped CD Torrevieja to a comfortable win over bottom side Segorbe last weekend. The course had obviously suffered from the weather too, as the greens were generally “wooly” and a number of pin positions difficult. It proved to a be major difficulty for many.
