by Tahnee Wright Laude and Grupo VAPF met with the Mayor of Benitachell, Josep Femenia this week to present their plans to build a new private secondary school next to the Laude private primary school on the Cumbre del Sol. The parties will invest 15million€ in to the project, which is expected to be complete and ready for students in 2018. Laude, who own the Lady Elizabeth School to which the new facilities will sit adjacent, have been looking to initiate the secondary school project for some time and also explored options in other locations before collaborating with Grupo VAPF to further develop on the Cumbre del Sol.

Grupo VAPF are property developers and builders specialising in the development of residential complexes and the construction of detached houses, luxury villas, terraced properties and apartments. Grupo VAPF, proudly state on their website that, to date, they have built and sold over 8000 properties along the North Costa Blanca coast. With properties having been acquired by families from all over the world. The new school will stand out above all for its sports facilities. A ‘sports city’ will be built complete with a soccer field, two basketball courts and a heated swimming pool. The City Council will sign a collaboration agreement with Laude and Grupo VAPF so that local residents can use these facilities.

The City Council are also keen to come to an agreement with the two companies over public use of the new auditorium, which will hold 640 spectators. The school will have 30 large classrooms along with two special education and support classrooms, four regular science labs, a food science lab, an art classroom, two music classrooms complete with two studios, three computer rooms and a library. Laude will also expand the primary school with 10 new classrooms, a computer room and a sports court. Josep Femenia was very excited upon seeing the plans, stressing that it will make Benitachell much more attractive to European families whilst making the municipality an ‘international benchmark’ in education and sport.

‘You won’t succeed - you won't divide us - we won't be cowed by terrorists’ London terrorist attack occurs on the first anniversary of the terrorist bombings in Brussels that killed 32 people. by Tahnee Wright FOUR people have died and at least 40 were injured on Wednesday afternoon as the attacker drove a car along the pavement of Westminster Bridge, ploughing into pedestrians, before fatally stabbing a policeman and being shot dead by police in the grounds of Parliament. The dead officer has been named as PC Keith Palmer, 48, a husband and father. The attack unfolded at about 14.40 GMT when a single attacker drove a grey Hyundai i40 along the pavement, killing at least two people and injuring many more. The car then crashed into railings outside the Houses of Parliament. The attacker, armed with a knife, ran to Parliament where he was confronted by the police. PC Palmer - who was not armed - was then stabbed and killed. Mark Rowley, Acting Deputy Commissioner and head of counter terrorism at the Metropolitan Police, said approximately 40 others were injured in the British Parliament complex. Rowley said that figure included three police officers, two of whom remain in serious condition. The dead attacker, whose identity has not been revealed, is believed to be the only suspect. The police's working assumption is that the attacker was inspired by international and Islamist-related terrorism.

Terra Mitica theme park cleared of reckless homicide

Owners of the Terra Mitica Theme Park in Benidorm have been cleared of the charge of reckless homicide by a court in Alicante. The appeal hearing relates to a fatal accident which occurred in 2014, when teenage Icelandic tourist, Andri Freyr Sveinsson,18, died after being thrown from his seat on one of the park's thrill rides. The hearing concluded that the death was accidental and no blame could be attached to either parties. An independent report also matched the evidence, revealing the tragedy was caused by a design fault on the eggcup style seats of the 'Hell' Rollercoaster. However, the ride had been running smoothly for several years and passed all it's inspections and revisions without the fault being detected. The court heard that since the accident the seats have been completely modified by the manufacturer to ensure the ride adheres to all safety regulations and no further accidents of this kind occur.

Spain mourns the loss of mum of two in London terror attacks

One of the victims of the Westminster terror attack has been named as 43-year-old mum of two Aysha Frade, The mum is believed to have been killed as she went to pick up her children aged eight and 11 from school. She is said to have taught Spanish DLD College London, near the scene of the massacre. Aysha’s Spanish family come from Betanzos, near the Galician city of La Coruna in the north west. Her family started receiving calls from London informing them firstly that her documentation had been found on Westminster Bridge. Hours later, her death was reportedly confirmed. As Aysha had a British passport, the Spanish Embassy had initially said there were no national victims. But soon after it was announced that among the dead was a woman of Spanish origin. Her older sisters run an English school in Betanzos and she has other friends and family in the area, the birthplace of her mum. A friend in Betanzos said: ‘She loved coming here and spending time with friends and relatives.’ Several relatives are reportedly travelling to Britain today (Thursday).

Brexit breakthrough for Brits in Spain Spain support Prime Minister’s bid to win fair deal for expats. by Tahnee Wright Prime Minister Theresa May has been battling to secure commitment from EU member states in regard to the rights of UK nationals living as expatriates after Brexit. May has stood her ground, adamant she cannot offer a similar guarantee for EU nationals in the UK until those protections for UK nationals are agreed upon. Her attempts to secure an early agreement on the issue were rebuffed late last year by German chancellor Angela Merkel and European Council president Donald Tusk. As the 10 day countdown until the Article 50 due date begins, there now appears to be a breakthrough on the issue to put the minds of UK national expatriates living in Spain at rest. Spain has voiced its support for a mutual agreement and has backed ‘in principle’ a common agreement for EU and UK nationals living abroad. The country’s EU secretary Jorge Toledo, who will lead Madrid’s nego-

tiations over Brexit, told The Times: ‘We are broadly in favour of retaining a reciprocal agreement on questions like healthcare and freedom of movement.’ ‘As regards the rights of EU citizens in

the UK and the rights of UK citizens in the EU, Spain is in favour of the amplest respect of these rights in the future but the modalities and conditions will and should be a matter of negotiation.’

Spanish foreign minister says Scotland would be at back of queue to join EU if it becomes independent Nicola Sturgeon recently announced plans to hold a second referendum before Brexit is finalised and the news hasn’t gone without comment from ministers across the EU. Spain’s Foreign Minister Alfonso Dastis said this week that Scotland would ‘have to queue’ to rejoin Europe in the event it achieved independence. Dastis said Spain ‘supports the integrity of the United Kingdom and does not encourage secessions or divisions in any of the member states. We prefer things to stay as they are.’ He said Scotland ‘would have to queue, meet the requirements for entry, and enter negotiations.’ The issue of independence is one of contention for Spain it fights its own separatist movements in Catalonia and the Basque country. Ms Sturgeon made the surprise announcement on Monday and said ‘if Scotland is to have a real choice – when the terms of Brexit are known but before it is too late to choose our own course – then that choice must be offered between the autumn of next year, 2018 and the spring of 2019.’ However, the UK Parliament must authorise any such poll – meaning Ms Sturgeon's call could be blocked by Ms May who attacked the move, accusing her Scottish counterpart of playing ‘games’ and the SNP of having ‘tunnel vision’. Whilst it is unlikely that Downing Street will block the referendum altogether, reports on Tuesday morning suggested the referendum, which requires the approval of both Houses of Parliament in Westminster, would not come before the UK leaves the European Union.

UK airlines may be forced to drop flights from Spain Post-Brexit

by Andy Mansell A stark warning from EU Chiefs could force route changes for the major UK airlines Ryanair and easyJet, flying out of Alicante-Elche and Valencia Airports post Brexit. Currently, both use these as bases for flights to destinations across the European Union countries, giving travellers along the Costa Blanca the opportunity to visit cities such as Rome, Paris and Milan and also fly to other airports in Spain, directly from their local airport, but just days from the triggering of Article 50 uncertainty remains for the future of these routes. Representatives from easyJet, along with the British Airways owner IAG, Ryanair and the Tui Group, whose portfolio of airlines includes Thomson, met the EU’s Brexit taskforce last week. EU officials in the meetings were clear, however, about the rigidity of the rules, amid concerns at a senior EU level that

too many in the aviation industry are in denial about the consequences of the UK’s decision to leave the bloc. They warned the airlines that they will need to relocate their headquarters, sell off shares to European nationals, or drop the intra-Europe routes if they want to continue flying within continental Europe after Brexit. The industry holds out hope that the UK and the EU will be able to seal an early deal during Article 50 negotiations ensuring damage to the industry is limited. However, a number of member states may also have interests in standing in the way of Britain’s attempts to strike a new deal. Spanish diplomats, for example, say they will not sign any international aviation agreement that recognises the airport on Gibraltar. For now, it's business as usual for the carriers, who have continued to add more European routes to their Spanish bases for the next two seasons.

18-year-old boy robs Javea house The local police of Javea and the Guardia Civil arrested a young man on suspicion of robbery at a house in the Castellans area of Javea last Wednesday. The 18-year-old suspect was arrested the next day after witnesses to the offence furnished the police with a character profile. The suspect was located on Calle Ronda Norte, however the search continues for his accomplice.

5,000 signatures against new seafront urbanisation ‘Las Olas’ in Denia

More than 5,000 people have already signed the petition ‘SOS Denia’ on change.org, opposing the build of the controversial urbanisation ‘Las Olas’ directly in front of the sea on Les Marines beach. Signatories have demanded that the construction, planned on one of the most delicate and damaged sections of the Marina Alta coast, be denied permission by Costas and the City Council of Denia. Alongside the petition, started earlier this month, Protejamos la Playa and SOS Natura Marina Alta have called for a comprehensive, durable and lasting solution to halt the progressive deterioration of the coasts of Denia and surrounding areas. Along with signatures, many comments have been left on the change.org petition that show concern for the coast and for the almost non-existent Blay Beach. Protejamos la Playa have also questioned recent actions taken by Costas in order to restore the beaches before Easter, describing the tonnes of sand poured along the coast as a ‘makeup operation that is nothing more than a patch for a chronic disease’.

Masymas launches new €3.2million store concept in Javea Introducing new design and service and improving on eco-efficiency. by Tahnee Wright Masymas (Juan Fornes Fornes, SA) has launched its first new generation store concept in Javea this week. The concept aims to improve the customer’s buying experience whilst increasing employee comfort and increasing efficiency in line with its environmental policy. The new-look premises were opened by the Mayor of Javea, Jose F. Chulvi and the general director of Masymas, Jose Juan Fornes, along with other members of the Pedreguer based corporation. Along with the new concept, Masymas celebrates its 26th year in Javea and in recognition of its many years of custom from Javea residents, donated 5 per cent of the revenue it took on its opening day to the environmental restoration of the affected areas of the fires of last summer. The new store on the Cabo de la Nao (number 148) replaces the one located further

down the road (number 86) and sees Masymas treble its presence in Javea, with the store covering a total of 2,450 m2, offering 110 parking spaces and expanding its workforce to 36 employees. In terms of design, the fully glazed façade allows pools of natural light in to the store and the use of new shades and materials both inside and outside adds to its modern, attractive image. In terms of sustainability, elements such as state of the insulation, a CO2 cooling system and LED lighting technology will decrease energy expenditure by up to 30 per cent in comparison to a traditional store. In terms of product innovation, the new store boasts an exciting wine cellar, fresh fish and seafood from the market of Javea and a new ‘Kitchen’ section, where fresh takeaway food is prepared daily. Construction of the store has taken a year and a half and Masymas have invested 3.2million€ in its development.

85,000€ allocated to Benitachell employment boost plan The Department of Social Services of the Municipality of Benitachell recently confirmed a new social employment initiative that will reinstate 12 unemployed people into jobs within the community. 85,437€ has been allocated to the initiative, which has been designed for people under 25 and over 45, as well as people with functional disability and low academic levels, aiming to combat employment discrimination. The initiative will reinforce the municipal services while providing socio-economic assistance to the long-term unemployed. Flowers represent victory for Javea After the fires that devastated some 812 hectares in Javea and Benitachell in September last year, residents are delighted to see hillsides of Lapiaz (next to the public park of les Cansalades) and Pinosol dyed a fabulous fuschia pink, covered in Wild Gladioli. The bloom on the mountain was expected after a winter of excessive rain and unusual snow but not to such excess… even in the shallower soils, flowers are budding. Wild Gladioli belong to the Iris family and grow in grasslands and rocky areas. In the Roman era, triumphant gladiators were given a bouquet of Gladioli as a symbol of victory. Could the showering of Gladioli across the scorched mountain represent the victory of life over the destruction of fire for Javea?

Fake me to jail by Andy Mansell Let’s face it, if you’re a bona fide supporter of one of the European Super Football Clubs such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich or even Chelsea, Manchester United or Arsenal you are cushioned to expect the exhorbitant costs involved in following your beloved club. Season tickets don’t come cheaply and once you figure in travel to European fixtures, particularly if you make a major final, a huge dent appears in your finances …... And then there’s the replica shirt. The major European clubs are well versed in parting supporters from their hard earned cash, so inevitably change their kit design every season. Most true followers wouldn’t dream of being seen in a replica shirt from previous seasons so are forced stump up their hard earned cash to buy the current shirt. So far, so good, everyone is happy. Now, imagine you are a hard pressed, cash strapped, Mum and Dad, either on holiday, or living here in Spain. Your kids (and maybe your other half) suddenly become obsessed with Spanish football and instantly become fans of either Real Madrid or Barcelona. Ronaldo and Messi become their Gods. They long to walk around in the same football shirt as their idols, so you decide to treat them to a replica. Visit a club shop or reputable sports goods store and you could expect to pay up to 80€ for a

Stranded Montgo hiker rescued at midnight

The local police of Javea, two firefighters and six civil protection volunteers came to the rescue of a young hiker lost on the southern side of the Montgo near La Cova Ampla on Sunday evening. The hiker was stuck on a cliff and as the sun began to set, he feared falling if he were to move up or down. He called the emergency services and was able to describe where he was whilst also making signals with his flashlight. The hiker was escorted to safety shortly after midnight. Six civil protection volunteers were involved in the rescue operation whilst many of the firefighters of Denia were supervising the fallas.

The Town Council of Javea recently purchased two plots of government-owned land in Granadella and La Plana. The 13,805€ plot in Granadella, close to the beach, spans 985 m2 and the 11,681€ La Plana plot, is located inside the Montgo National Park, covering a 1,200 m2 area. Both will be used for community purposes. The La Plana plot includes a building which was used in the past by the Guardia Civil but is now derelict and likely to be demolished. Negotiations with the national government began in 2016 and the council were keen to acquire the strategically-situated plots to ensure that they remained public property. The sale agreement was signed by Javea mayor Jose Chulvi and Antonio Rodriguez Laso, the national government’s Economy and Treasury delegate for Alicante Province.

Another dolphin dead on Javea shore The storms experienced this winter have brought many dead cetaceans to the shores of the Marina Alta and last week was no exception as a listed dolphin washed up in the surf in Le Cala Sardinera (cove) in Javea on Monday. Access to the cove is by footpath and hikers alerted 112 after finding the dolphin, who, on arrival, identified it as a listed Stenella Coeruleoable, whose most remarkable feature is the distinctive pattern of blue and white stripes along the body. Expert biologists and veterinarians of 112 removed the corpse and will perform a necropsy. The January storms dragged a dolphin to the same cove, which rotted on the beach. A Grampus Griseus was also found on the shore in Denia.

Javea school bans mobile phones

The decision was agreed upon by the Pedagogical Coordination Commission and the School Consell who claim educational activity levels have been affected by ‘the abusive and incorrect use’ of mobile phones in class and around the school. Oscar Sanchez, member of the local police

of Elche, criminologist and expert in school harassment and use of social networks, attended the school on Tuesday to give a presentation to families and teachers on the use of social networks by adolescents. In the letter, the school confirmed that the reception telephone will be available to students if they require it and students will not be able to collect confiscated phones on the same or the next day, but solely on Tuesdays and Fridays from 4pm to 5.30pm. The school also warned that failure to comply with these rules may be grounds for disciplinary proceedings.

25,000€ investment for Alfas del Pi sports centre

Storm damage repair work in Calpe Following the widespread damage caused by the storms in January, the General Director of Sustainability of the Coast and the Sea has initiated the emergency actions for repair work to begin on the cliffs of Borumbot, of the Arenal beach and Calalga in Calpe. The works around Calaga will be complete before Easter and those of the Arenal beach at the end of May. Triples torsion meshes will cover the cliffs of the Arenal beach, measuring 323 metres in length with cable networks to prevent detachment at the top of the cliff. The deteriorated mesh currently covering the cliffs at Calaga will be replaced with the same triple torsion variety measuring 90 metres long. Both actions, which are part of the Coastal Plan 2017, have been necessary for a long time due to the natural erosion of the cliffs, however the impact of the storms has called for its immediate repair. Sand will also be distributed across the Arenal beach given the loss of sand that came with the storm. The Ministry of Environment will allocate 3.65million€ to recover the affected beaches in the province of Alicante by the storms in January.

by Tahnee Wright Vicente Arques, Mayor of Alfas del Pi recently visited the municipal sports centre along with the Mayor of Municipality Sports, Luis Miguel Morant to check out the latest improvement works that have been carried out at the facility. Arques and Morant explained that three fundamental improvements have been made: The change and renewal of the heating system (both the part corresponding to the football stadium and the gymnasium, also serving the sports courts), new covers for the high jump mats and pole and as requested by the club de pilota de l’Alfas, the creation of three new tracks. Arques confirmed ‘all these improvements have meant a new investment in our sports facilities of almost 25,000€’ an investment that will be reinforced, explained Arques and Morant, with the creation of the new padel area that will go to bidding soon. The tender will comprise the creation of three new padel courts, the improvement of the three existing ones and the completion of the vestries and the leisure area that will serve both this area and the Pau Gasol Pavilion.

Aqualia’s World Water Day competition for kids Coinciding with World Water Day which was celebrated on Wednesday 22 March, Aqualia launched a new edition of its annual children’s digital competition. This year’s competition, ‘Mission Purification’ aims to create awareness about the water cycle – from when the water is used in our homes until it is returned to the environment. Aqualia wants to educate children in a fun, interactive way about how wastewater can be reused for various purposes through use of the animated characters ‘Hero Hydrokid’ and ‘Superaqua’. The deadline for submission of entries runs from March 22 to May 23. Prizes up for grabs include 10 Samsung Tablet 7 “s, one for each of the 10 winners. 250 underwater cameras for finalists and for the winning school collectively, a gift card to the value of 1,000€ for educational materials. Mayor of Benissa, Abel Cardona and Councilor of Urban Territorial Strategy and Environment, Mari Carme Ronda met with Juan Carlos Moragues, delegate of Government in the Valencian Community on Monday to expedite the approval of works required on the N332 as it passes through Benissa. The Government has prioritised the works and confirmed they are awaiting signature of the award documents, an issue related to the extended State budgets, despite the fact that the award process is completed. 272,000€ has been granted for the works, which will also include the repair on a masonry wall of La Fustera beach and the cliff face in the cala de l’Advocat. The three later discussed the repair works that have already been carried out on La Fustera beach, with the Mayor thanking Moragues for the immediate effort made to get the work started - the quality of which has been exceptionally high and means the beach will be in optimum shape to welcome tourists at Easter.

Repair work almost completed on Albir beach by Tahnee Wright Last Friday morning, the municipal workers were repainting the bike path of the Paseo de las Estrellas, one of the finishing to the mass of repair work that has taken place on Albir beach since the January storms. The main works, explained Mayor of Beaches, Rocio Guijarro, comprise repairing the main infrastructure damaged by the surf, which exposed large rocks on the beach, caused damage in a section of the stone wall that protects el Raco de l’Albir, ripped out litter bins, footpaths and disabled access ramps. The work of levelling and reprofiling the beach has already been completed and in the next couple of weeks before Easter, the litter bins, footpaths and disabled access ramps will be replaced. Sand will be scattered over the children’s playgrounds and the beach volleyball area. The repair work has cost the city in excess of 100,000€ and the objective of the government team was, as Guijarro emphasised, ‘to have the beach in perfect condition as soon as possible, since Easter is just around the corner and the beach is, on the one hand, a great attraction for neighbours and visitors and on the other, a source of economic activity and wealth for the municipality.’

Schools in Spain prefer to teach in English Recent investigations revealed a mere 28 per cent of Alicante Province state schools opt to teach mainly in Spanish. Under the Valencia region’s tri-lingual programme, schools can choose which subjects and lessons are taught in Valenciano, English and Spanish. In encouraging schools to teach in Valenciano, the Generalitat has introduced a carrot-and-stick approach, so that more classes taught in Valenciano automatically bring more classes taught in English. The advanced level of four subjects taught in English, one in Spanish and the remainder in Valenciano was chosen by 164 schools, 40 per cent of the total. In contrast, 132 schools - 32 per cent of the total - will teach in both languages at intermediate level with two subjects in Valenciano, one or two in English and the rest in Spanish. A further 119 schools (28 per cent) chose the basic level taught in Spanish with one subject in English and one in Valenciano.

The RED Special Edition iPhones were launched in recognition of more than 10 years of partnership between Apple and (RED) and alike earlier red hued products, a portion of sales from the red iPhones will be used to help fund HIV/ AIDS research. The special edition REDiPhone will be available to order online worldwide and in stores beginning today, Friday March 24. ‘Since we began working with (RED) 10 years ago, our customers have made a significant impact in fighting the spread of AIDS through the purchase of our products’ said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. El Centro Asociado de la UNED in Denia has begun its debate series, which aims to promote the activities of the students, enhancing relations with the local area and the participation of the university community. The first issue brought to the table was the ever-prevalent issue of forest fires and environmental movements. Coordinator of the University Extension Courses at the UNED in Denia, Jaume Tortosa, oversaw the talk, in which Andres Lopez - one of the students who organised the series - participated as speaker along with Pau Soler, an activist for environmental protection. Following the presentations from the speakers, a small debate took place with the participation of students in person and on an online chat platform. Thanks were given thereafter to Marianne Lopez and Angel Lopez, who moderated both mediums. The next debate will be held on Friday March 31 from 7pm with the theme ‘Free education - a new way of educating’.

Security improved at La Cova dels Arcs The viewing platform at La Cova del Arcs, ever-popular with tourists, provides a spectacular vantage point from which you can see Morro Falqui, La Cala del Moraig, La Punta del Cap de la Nao and La Illa del Descobridor de Xabia. by Tahnee Wright Costas and the Town Council of the Poble Nou de Benitatxell have installed wooden banisters and handrails along the platform to ensure security of its visitors. Councillor of Tourism, Manolo Segarra described the area as ‘one of the most visited natural viewpoints of the cove’ and expressed the importance of the newly installed security measures, explaining that beforehand, those who went up to the viewpoint did so ‘not without danger of stumbling and falling on the rocks’. La Cova dels Arcs is located next to La Cala del Moraig and is a stunning example of a karst landscape, sculpted by the sea. The erosive action of the waves and the dissolution of the sea water on the limestone rocks has established the cave as an emblematic icon on the Valencian coast with light entering through two great arcs and a superior hole.

Falla Diana The first to announce the name of their new president, Falla Diana will see Pablo Fuster leading the commission next year. Falla Campaments A member of the Falla Campaments commission since 2000 and one-time president in 2006, Salvador Berruti was delighted to be elected to lead for a second time in 2018. Falla Les Roques Falla Les Roques introduced Fran Martinez as their president for next year. Fran has been a member of the commission for four years and will work alongside children’s president Marc Femenia. Falla Darrere del Castell The next to reach the Town Hall square were the falleros of Darrere del Castell, with new president, Pepe Ortiz. Pepe is particularly au-fait with the responsibilities having been president back in 1989. Falla Camp Roig Leading Falla Camp Roig will be Juan Moro, another second-timer who has not yet revealed who will work alongside him.

Falla Baix la Mar After a stint as president in 2009, Manuel Marco Llorca is looking forward to taking on the prestigious role again in 2018. Falla West Vicent Montanter this year celebrates 20 years as part of the Falla West commission and in 2018, also the year of the 70th anniversary of the commission, will hold the position of president. Falla Saladar Jose Luis Martín will be president of the commission again in 2018, accompanied by Ada Arbona. Jose has been a member of the commission for 12 years, in which he has various positions including vice president. Falla Port Rotes Manuel Marquez assumes the Falla Port Rotes 2018 presidency after 9 years as member of the commission. Manuel was the founder of the Falla Darrere del Castell, of which he was also president. Falla Paris Pedrera Juan Carlos Molina will be the president Falla Paris Pedrera next year. Juan, better known as ‘Naranjito’ has been a member of the Falla Paris Pedrera commission for 15 years. FalLa Centro Esteban Arnau, linked to the Falla Centro for more than seven years was thrilled to accept presidency for 2018.

Miracle twins of Javea say hello to staff at health centre where they were born

Parents thank the paediatricians and midwife who helped deliver the babies. Valentina and Isabella the ‘miracle twins’ of Javea recently returned to the health centre in Javea where they were born prematurely on November 1 last year. Arlene, the mother of Valentina and Isabella, gave birth after only 26 weeks of gestation (the normal is between 37 and 40) with paediatricians Monica Bonora and Silvana Bintos at hand, along with midwife Ana Vico. The birth was extremely quick and was not intended to have taken place in the health centre. Nevertheless, Bonora and Bintos quickly took to the job at hand, escorting the twins, who each weighed 700 grams, huddled in their chests in the back of an ambulance straight to Denia Hospital, hugging them to transmit body heat whilst Arlene followed in a separate ambulance. The first-time parents Arlene and Craig took the girls, now four and a half months old and weighing a little more than three kilograms, to the health centre to say hello to those who helped deliver them before presenting staff members with a beautiful bunch of flowers each. ‘We are very grateful to you. You saved our girls ‘ lives.’ Craig told them. ‘What happened was exceptional,’ said pediatrician Bonora and midwife Vico commented that even on a course held in Valencia on premature births, the ‘miracle twins’ were the stars of the show. ‘We will never forget what the three Javea doctors did for our daughters,’ added Craig, who extended great thanks for the many messages of support the family received following the early arrival.

by Tahnee Wright ‘MEDSEA’ is the first international water sports trade fair and will take place this weekend, March 25 – 26 at the Institucion Ferial Alicantina, Alicante. Antoni Joan Bertomeu Valles, Mayor of Teulada Moraira and Councillor for Tourism Carlos Linares presented the programme and advertising material for the the fair. The mayor explained that the municipality offers eight kilometres of marvellous coastline with well-known beaches and bays ideal for nautical sports and MEDSEA offers the perfect environment to promote all the public and private companies offering water activities. He also commended the municipality in having ‘one of the best

sports marinas of the Valencian Community’, the Yacht Club Moraira. The Teulada Moraira stand will distribute a variety of promotional collateral – a general catalogue including information about beaches and nautical activities and a special catalogue for diving, as well as a general flyer of the area. The novelty giveaway is an innovative edition of a special catalogue with underwater itineraries of the Teulada Moraira coast, printed on special waterproof paper for use under water. Throughout the fair, characters ‘Pulpo and Estrella’ will encourage interaction from visitors and there will also be a competition, with prizes sponsored by Centro de Buceo La Galera (a diving experience), the Club

Nautico Moraira (a kayak excursion to the Cap d’Or) and local restaurants. The mayor invites everybody to visit the fair and has extended great thanks for all the altruistic support of various companies.

Wettest winter on record

After a very dry winter last year, the winter of 2016/17 has gone into the record books as the wettest winter on record. It didn't take much to upset the record books, but three or four continuous days of downpours, and freezing conditions that put snow on some beaches, such as Torrevieja for the first time in over 100 years, were enough to write new records. Keeping reports on the weather in Valencia and Alicante dates back to 1864 and apparently there had not been this much rain since authorities began keeping weather records. This winter we received around two and a half times the considered normal rain levels for the winter season and according to Jorge Tamayo, the Valencia representative for the Spanish weather agency Aemet, their forecasts indicate that the same sort of intense weather events will occur more frequently in future due to climate change. In terms of the weather, winter is looked upon as the months of December, January and February. This year the Mediterranean region received its fair share of rain and gale-force winds, plus the unexpected snow storm in January that dropped snow on beaches along the entire coastline, closed schools and left thousands of drivers stranded. The beaches of Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa, Guardamar, Jávea and Dénia, in Alicante province, were covered in up to 10 centimetres of snow. The combination of cold temperatures coupled with strong winds, felled power lines and left thousands of homes without power. Along with the rain and high winds, millions of euros of damage were caused by high sea swells which caused many beaches to disappear and sidewalks and beachfront properties needing major repair. The flip side side is that Torrevieja has already registered temperatures up into the 30's and weather experts are expecting temperatures above the historical average during the Spring.

Careline Theatre AGM Careline Theatre will host its Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the theatre in Alcalali on Monday March 27 at 8pm. Founded in 1996, the amateur theatre group has gone from strength to strength and boasts a membership of over 90 people. They produce three main shows a year - one in the Spring, usually in May, one in the Autumn and a Pantomime in January. After the tournament, the Council of Sports and Welfare awarded medals and certificates to all participants, who also went home with a commemorative bag each from C.B. Ifach-Calpe.

Mortgage Refunds – the new PPI?

How much does your Spanish bank owe you?

If you took out a mortgage with a Spanish bank or lender before 2015 you may be entitled to a refund due to the ruling of a recent High Court hearing in Madrid. In April 2016, the courts ruled that the ‘floor clause’ was illegal. The floor clause on a variable-rate mortgage meant that customers continued to pay a specified minimum interest despite the libor base-rate falling below that level in recent years. In April, a court in Madrid ruled that these clauses were illegal. This means you can now go to court to apply for a refund of overpaid interest and to have future repayments reduced. In addition to the floor clause, the Supreme Court also ruled in December 2016 that bank imposed charges for many expenses, taxes and commissions derived from a mortgage loan were also illegal. This means those who took out mortgages before this ruling may also be entitled to a refund on these extra costs. Refunds apply to existing or fully paid up mortgages. Mortgage Refund Seminar The Parador Hotel Javea 30th March 2017 11.00am

by Tahnee Wright A few weeks ago, the City Council of Calpe announced the assignment of a 3,600 m2 plot to the Colegio de Educacion Especial Gargasindi (special education centre). The plot, designed to expand the facilities of the special education centre, is located next to the Escuela Infantil Silene d' Ifac. The council have also announced this week that the 2,610 m2 plot of the former municipal nursey will be assigned to the special education centre, offering more alternatives so restoration work can begin as soon as possible. The former nursery plot is located adjacent to the special education centre and the council have undertaken to proceed with and pay for, if necessary, the demolition of the former nursery facilities. The council have offered the two spaces after recognising that the current facilities at the special education centre are insufficient to provide for the needs of the students. The special education centre was founded in 1980 to offer resources and care for children with serious and permanent educational needs in the Marina Alta region. Over the years and responding to the needs of the area, students from the Marina Baixa región have joined, with the centre now working with more than 60 students.

Oliva U3A raise in excess of €1,000 for Make a Smile

Members of Oliva U3A visited the Make a Smile charity farm last week. Lynda from Oliva presented Tony of Make a Smile with a cheque for 635€, raised from the raffle held at the U3A Christmas party along with a cheque for 375€, raised from the recent U3A Choir Concert and a surprise 50€ donation from an anonymous donor. The group also delivered a variety of items for use on the farm, to help Make a Smile raise even more money to benefit the children in their care.

18,000€ for Moraira gardens The garden areas in Calle Almacenes Credit: www.teuladamoraira.org and Calle Iglesia in Moraira have been improved recently, costing 18,000€. This was the first phase of a remodelling project for garden areas in the centre of Moraira and during the next few months, improvement works will also take place in Calle La Mar, Avenida Madrid and Calle Barranquet. The Town Hall had chosen mainly Mediterranean plants to refresh the gardens, as they fare best in severe climate conditions and last for a long time. The councillor Raul Llobel explained why Calle Almacenes and Calle Iglesia were the first to be dealt with. The first has a historic background, with the neighbours have been asking for improvement for quite some time. The second also had priority as it is an arterial road and citizens as well as visitors use it frequently.

With the days getting longer and the weather getting better, the City Council of Pedreguer have recently announced the programme for the 20th edition of ‘l’Esport en Primavera’ (Sports in Spring). In collaboration with many local sports organisations and the Department of Sports, the programme launches this Saturday March 25 and continues for three months until the end of June, comprising tournaments, workshops, competitions, talks and exhibitions. The extensive programme is designed to encourage the participation of the whole family – big or small, old or young - offering just about every sport imaginable from badminton to bubble soccer, archery to pilates, the council has expressed that no one has an excuse not to get involved! In the midst of the programme takes places the XII Minijocs de la Marina Alta (Minigames XII of the Marina Alta) on May 19 - 21. Students learning organic gardening techniques in Alfas

by Andy Mansell More and more of us are turning to organically grown produce and meat, worried about the effects of pesticides and chemicals used in regular farming. Take a look around your average supermarket and the shelves and fridges are packed with organically grown goods. Unfortunately there is a premium to pay for a healthier diet and many families on a budget can't stretch to the extra cost. With this in mind, L'Alfas D'el Pi Town Hall are holding a two day course on growing your own organic fruit and vegetables. The sessions take place on Satur-

day March 25 and April 1 and are aimed at people who wish to learn the basic skills to start up an organic garden. The ethos behind organic produce is to get healthier food of higher nutritional quality obtained through sustainable procedures, without the presence of chemicals and synthetic materials. The content of the course taught by Environment Teacher Antonio Morcillo will cover design, land preparation, planting and sowing, irrigation, pest control and garden maintenance. The first session this coming Saturday March 25 is theory and will be held in the Platja Albir Social Centre in Albir

from 9am until 1pm. The following session on April 1 will be a practical session in the organic garden at the Landscape and Environmental Interpretation Centre at Carrascos. News from the Marina Alta Fine Arts Society The next Marina Alta Fine Arts Society (MAFAS) meeting will take place on Thursday April 6 at the Parador, Javea. New recreation area in Teulada Moraira

The county council of Alicante has granted Teulada Moraira a subsidy of 60,000€. The money will be used to improve the plots owned by the municipality between Calle Valladolid, Tarragona and Jijona, the Partida Sabatera and to create a green zone. Work started this week and will continue for approximately two months. Trees will be cleaned and cut back, new trees will be planted, walls will be built to avoid landslides, a path with steps will be built to connect the upper and lower road and there will also be a hiking path. The south entrance will be blocked for cars and biocircuits will be installed. Councillor Nieves Rodriguez thanked the county council for the subsidy.

U3A go on a Xativa adventure

by Andy Mansell A tour around a micro-brewery, a visit to an ancient castle, loud daytime fireworks, fiesta queens and a ride on the 'Noddy Train' were all on the agenda when members of the U3A Marina Baixa took a trip â€˜up northâ€™ to the Valencian town of Xativa last week. Over 50 members joined the excursion from Albir on a beautifully sunny Spring day, arriving at their destination in time for coffee, before catching the tourist 'train' to the famous castle on a hill. After an informative walking tour of the historic rooms inside the fortress, they retired to a local restaurant for a well-earned lunch. As it turned out to be a fiesta holiday in Xativa, the group were treated to some impromptu entertainment in the form of a deafening mascleta display and a sighting of the fiesta queens outside the restaurant. After lunch the highlight was an extremely interesting trip to a local micro-brewery, where their guide Gernan gave them an insight into the processes involved in beer making. The members were then treated to a tast-

ing of three of the brewery's beers. One flavoured with rosemary and honey, one made with salt water and another brewed and kept in sherry barrels giving it a highly distinctive flavour. The bus returned south somewhat heavier as many of the group bought a few samples of their favourite tipple to enjoy at home, whilst helping to bring back memories of another wonderful trip organized by Rob and Liz. The next meeting of the U3A Marina Baixa will be held on Monday April 24 in the auditorium of the Casa de Cultura in L'Alfas D'el Pi. General meetings are normally held on the fourth Monday of every month and new people are always welcome to come along to find out more about the organization. Alfas del Pi celebrates 160th anniversary of the ‘Christ of Good Success’ Municipal festivities take place on Sunday. by Tahnee Wright Alfas del Pi prepares to celebrate the 160th anniversary of the arrival to the municipality of the Santismo Cristo del Buen Acierto (Christ of Good Success). For this, the parish of San Jose, the Polyphonic Choir l'Alfas Canta and the Department of Fiestas have organised a celebration to take place on Sunday March 26 at 11.30am in the Main Square. ‘On Sunday, the costaleros will carry the statue of the Christ to the square to receive the embrace of the village’ said Jose Antonio Rubio, Director of the L'Alfas Canta choir and promoter of the event. As computer users, we are all familiar with the constant flow of advice on what we should or should not be eating and what supplements we should be swallowing in order to maintain good health.

Usually they are marketing ploys to purchase unnecessary and ineffectual products, but sometimes they appear to be sound advice on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It is certainly a minefield for the unwary and positively dangerous for individuals who believe everything they read on the internet and are compulsive buyers. But even more dangerous is the advice that so called experts are constantly bombarding us with via press reports. Dangerous because what they tell us today about the benefits or perils of consuming certain common food and drink items, will be invariably turned around a full 360 degrees months later. Only recently the Princess informed me she had read, that osteoarthritis can be exacerbated by eating tomatoes. She was concerned because my favourite breakfast is grilled tomatoes and eggs on toast and I have a mild condition in my fingers which causes me to lose my grip on the beer glass I am holding – even though it only occurs when said glass is empty. Also of course, eat too many eggs and your cholesterol levels will go through the roof, so it looks as

if I’m doomed. But just a minute, that was last year, because now the ‘experts’ are saying that eggs are recommended and that two a day is ideal. This about-turn principle applies to just about every food item you can think of with sugar the big talking point right now. Sure, we can all see that our sugar intake and its relationship to obesity and the epidemic proportions of diabetes is inextricably linked, but when we are told to only drink sugar free beverages, we are being led down a very dangerous road indeed, because the sugar substitute aspartame has been proven to cause alarming side effects and even death. So why has it not been banned? Ask yourself just who it is that funds all of the expensive contradictory research that seems to have been designed to confuse. And who will it be, as always, who will come galloping to the rescue with yet another wonder drug to calm our fears? We should not be angry that our health has been deliberately endangered in the name of corporate greed, we should be furious.

When I was a young lad in Junior Secondary School, I had a wonderful teacher by the name of Kathleen Hatton. She was an adorable, hard working creature who had an absolute passion for the Arts. Amongst the subjects she taught were Geography, Ballet for boys and girls (not this boy I’m pleased to say!} , and the English language. One morning I came into the classroom to find that she had written in chalk on the blackboard: ‘The English language is one of the most beautiful in the world.’ I have always remembered this, and so many years later when I discovered that Miss Hatton was spending her final days in a Nursing Home, I dedicated one of my books, THE CHANDLER’S DAUGHTER, to her. She wrote back ‘Thank you for making my life worthwhile’. I only tell you this story because at the age of 92 Miss Hatton started to learn Spanish, and became, I am told, quite proficient in it. It has often been said that when it comes to travelling to foreign countries the Brits are the laziest in the world, and in particular when they are going on holiday or settling down as expats in Europe. ‘They should learn to speak English’ says the ill-informed British tourist. Why, I ask? This is Spain where the spoken language is Spanish – Espagnol. But, as we all know there are always two sides to any argument. Let’s face it, if you are five years old your brain is fresh enough to absorb any language or complicated new technology, but if you are of an advanced age it can be a real struggle to take things in, especially if you have taken the brave step to move to another country, like Spain. What is it about the elderly human brain that positively resists any attempt to try to understand something new? I remember, when I first arrived in Spain, even the sound of the locals speaking the language scared the daylights out of me. It was all so fast, like a machine gun being fired at me. For the next few weeks I tried to make sense of Spanish newspapers, watched with a totally blank mind Spanish television hoping that I would be able to pick out a word here and there that resembled English, and making an absolute fool of myself in a café where I said ‘Buenos noches’ to the waitress at ten o’clock in the morning. Since then, however, my confidence has grown. In Supermarkets I now know how to ask for lamb’s liver and toilet paper in Spanish, but I have to admit that on one occasion my ego took a bit of a blow when, in perfect tourist guide book Spanish I stopped a burly looking road worker to ask him where I could find the nearest men’s toilet. His response was grim and threatening and when he called across a man from the Guardia Civil I soon understood why. ‘I hope it is the hombre’s toilet you are looking for Senor,’ he said with a thick English accent, ‘and not for the Senora?’ I have to say that since I first arrived in Spain fifteen years ago, great strides have been made amongst the British community to get to know the language. Spanish classes have been set up in people’s homes, there are one to one sessions in bars and restaurants, and many of the local authorities are offering free lessons to expats of all ages. And so dear readers, it’s up to us. If we are serious about getting to know the language of our hosts, no matter what our age, it boils down to concentration and perseverance. Not easy. Some recall the 1968 Buy British campaign that saw little Union flags stuck on homemade goods. The initiative was inspired by the need to keep British money and jobs in Britain. It wasn’t much of a success. If today we were to remove foreign made products from our homes I doubt even the wallpaper would be left. Britain’s governing elite today promote a Buy Russian campaign. As a consequence, 144 million Russians now take pride in their country’s growing self-sufficiency and economic buoyancy. Not much of an EU strategy if their anti-Russian embargo adds to European Union impoverishment. The anti-Russian economic blockade cost the UK £10 billion in 2015 and hasn’t recovered. Trade between the UK and Russia is down 50 per cent and has cost the EU $60.2 billion. As I write, 2.3 million, mostly Russian and Ukrainian citizens of Crimea, celebrate their freedom from Soviet imposed Ukrainian colonialism. Crimea’s economy has improved considerably. Their tourist industry, enjoying a 20 per cent increase in tourism, is now placing table cloths out for an estimated 6 million highspending Russian tourists expected during 2017. Spain grimaced when in 2015 Russian tourism dropped by 32 per cent. It gets worse; the Russians are high spenders and only the Chinese exceed their spending power. Before the blockade Russian tourists spent €7 for every €1 spent by EU nationals. Remember the golden rule: those who have the gold make the rules. Russia retaliated by blocking EU products and produce. The loss suffered by 550 million EU citizens is the gain of trade rivals. It is party time in Turkey, Belarus, Brazil, Columbia, Syria, Pakistan, and Iran. Even Greenland and the Faroe Islanders are cock-a-hoop over replacing fish products once sold by Baltic EU members. Of course, if we lived in a democracy we could d e s e lect our political representatives. Sadly, we cannot. The European Parliament to which we elect MEPS is an advisory body only. The real decisions are made by two unelected EU Presidents and 20 faceless Commissioners. On March 13 this witless coven decided to extend their Buy Russian not European policy. You couldn’t make it up? You don’t need to.

Denia hits the big screen

This Monday, filming of ‘Formentera Lady’ began – a new film written and directed by Pau Dura that will see some scenes recorded in Denia. Starring Jose Sacristan, most of the film is recorded on the island of Pitiusa, but also includes four days of recording in Denia. The scenes will be shot in the port and in the historical centre of the city. Balearia ferries have collaborated with producers Fosca Films and Sunrise Pictures whilst the port itself will be transformed into a large set where real-life passengers will be recorded, filming will also take place on three of the Balearia vessels. The film, led by Jose Sacristan alongside Jordi Sanchez, Nora Navas and the young Sandro Ballesteros tells the story of Samuel, a 70-year-old hippie who lives in Formentera. Samuel’s life takes a turn when his daughter Ana leaves him in charge of his 11-year-old grandson. Forced to take charge, he revisits old sentimental relationships for inspiration but soon finds that he is unable to take care of anyone other than himself, taking his grandson to a boarding school run by an old friend in Denia. The film is produced by Fosca Films (Fill of Cain, Blue Lips) and Sunrise Pictures (22 Angels), in co-production with Good Machine Films, AIE and with the associated production of Televisio de Catalunya and La Periferica Produccions. The ICEC, IVAC-Generalitat Valenciana and the Island Council of Formentera have also participated. Screenwriter and director Pau Dura is extremely popular in Catalonia for his stints as an actor in series Plats Bruts and Merli, but is also known across Spain for having starred in 7 Lives. Recording will also take place in Valencia and Barcelona.

I am looking for a second hand car to buy. I have been told that if I buy an English car and drive it back I will never be able to sell it if I wish to do so in the future as it will be a right hand drive. Why are are the spanish second hand cars here in such bad condition? I have looked on English websites and the cars are immaculate and cheaper but yet here every car is either far too expensive for what it is or they are covered in marks and dents. I have witnessed many a time someone just opened their car door on to somebody elses. Why can't people in Spain either park properly or just look after their cars or have respect for other peoples. Beach dogs

I have recently moved to Spain. We have two children and two dogs. Over the winter months we enjoyed going the beach with our dogs. They loved the space and the water. We was told they are not allowed on the beach come the summer. With a large fine if so. Please could you tell me the rules regarding dogs on the beach. Summer is on its way and for me it has been a long time coming. The winter has proved to be one of the worst I have experienced in the 17 years of living here but no matter how bad it gets at least we know that one day the summer arrives in full force. Protecting the kids The weather was beautiful at the weekend. My family and I spent the day down the beach. I only had sun cream from last summer as I havent even thought about beach weather yet. On the night I noticed that my youngest daugther had burnt her face and shoulders. Please can someone tell me the expiry date on sun cream, even though it says so on the tub. Do they last longer than a year? The cream I had was a childrens high factor product which I brought last summer, but yet she still caught the sun and burnt. Do we have to buy new ones every year? Why don't they last?

New research shows ‘hyperactives’ are more likely to become entrepreneurs New research from Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) finds that those diagnosed with hyperactivity - one of the main symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) - are more likely to become entrepreneurs. Too often hyperactivity is associated with low job performance and a greater chance of becoming unemployed rather than offering the potential to become successful business people. Surveys of more than 20,000 in Sweden and the Netherlands came to the overwhelming conclusion that those living with this behaviour are more likely to start their own company. The figures also showed that a low percentage reported to be previously unemployed before becoming an entrepreneur. The report suggests that becoming an entrepreneur can be a positive career move for those with hyperactivity, fitting their specific talents and harnessing their highly re-active minds. The high energy levels associated with this trait can support those taking the initiative, being risk averse and running a business. The study was not a clinical diagnosis of hyperactivity, but instead looked at behavioural tendencies, suggesting that healthy individuals also experience such symptoms to some extent. Therefore, it included respondents reporting no or low levels of symptoms. Ingrid Verheul of Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) and a team of colleagues set out to confirm

through empirical research that hyperactivity is a catalyst to being an entrepreneur. She said: ‘This research could have a significant effect to destigmatise hyperactivity or ADHD because it demonstrates that they have the potential to turn their hand to entrepreneurship. I can imagine that it may help young people to consider this career move as an alternative to wage-employment in which they often experience problems. Obviously, there is also a role for educators and parents here to point out the possibilities.’ Verheul added: ‘Statistics shows that in the USA there’s been a 43 per cent growth in young people with ADHD and that in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy and Brazil there has also been a substantial rise.’ ‘Coupled with our research this leads to the expectation that many more ‘hyperactive’ entrepreneurs could be on the horizon. That is, providing they are made aware of the potential fit with self-employment and are guided to take entrepreneurial action.’

Generation skipping is a valuable tool in Inheritance Tax planning, which is about getting as much of your assets down to your descendants as you can. Leaving assets to children, especially those who are financially secure and therefore don’t need them, means they are likely to be taxed again before they reach your grandchildren, who are more in need of the funds. Leaving assets to your grandchildren, rather than your children, increasingly makes sense. With people living longer, by the time there is an inheritance it will be the grandchildren who are in greater need financially. If they have to wait for their parents to leave it to them in turn, the assets will be taxed twice before they reach them. It makes sense to discuss this with your children – not least so it does not come as a surprise to them, but also because they may prefer it if you leave assets to their children rather than themselves.

Workers care more about others when jobs are under threat Those enduring change in organisations where jobs are under threat are concerned as much about others as they are of themselves, according to a new study from a team of researchers at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM). In research which analysed employee reactions to 23 change projects in a large police organisation, workers were genuinely worried about what happens to their colleagues and for the fate of the entire organisation. Gabriele Jacobs, who was part of the research team, said: ‘The reaction was totally unexpected as we were anticipating that those interviewed would want to minimise the damage to their own positions and careers. Yet only a minority of people expressed this to us. More voiced concern over what would happen to their colleagues and the organisation as a result of the organisational change.’ Big reorganisations can be fear-inducing events for employees who see their roles and career opportunities affected by new structures and ideas. That’s why managers often assume that employee behaviour – and backlash – against change is driven by self-preservation. Yet, in the study some even said they would consider the change project a failure if their colleagues suffered or if the final result was negative for the organisation at large. They were also worried about how the general public might react to the changes or how the quality of the police service might suffer. After analysing all the interviews, the researchers noticed that most employees tend to form more elaborate opinions about the effects of change than managers often anticipate. They often see various gains and losses in every change, both for themselves, for others and for the organisation. Jacobs added: ‘We observed that people want the gains and losses to be distributed fairly, according to a set of moral standards, even if the organisational changes do not affect them directly, or when the fair treatment of others comes at a personal cost. You could say people are more altruistic than earlier research has suggested.’

UK200Group Accountants react to Philip Hammond’s National Insurance U-Turn

In his spring Budget, Chancellor Philip Hammond announced that National Insurance (NI) contributions for the self-employed in the UK would rise from 9 per cent to 10 per cent in April 2018 and to 11 per cent in 2019, to bring it closer to the 12 per cent currently paid by employees. However, following strong opposition from the self-employed community in the UK, he’s now decided that it will not go ahead. The UK200Group is the UK’s leading membership association of independent chartered accountancy and law firms, whose members act for over 150,000 SMEs and private clients. So what do the UK’s accountants think of the U-turn? Alan Boby, Partner at UK200Group member Ellacotts, said, ‘This is welcome news for the self-employed for now. However, the selfemployed should consider if being self-employed is a long term strategy. It is now more important than ever for self-employed individuals to seek specialist tax advice when deciding which business vehicle to use.’ Francis Whitbread, Partner at UK200Group member firm Edmund Carr, said, ‘the Chancellor's U-turn on the proposed increase in national insurance contributions for the self-employed suggests that those advisers, civil service mandarins or whoever suggested the policy to Mr Hammond in the first place have no idea of what goes on in the real world of SMEs, or what public opinion feels.’ ‘I have a nasty suspicion this is not the only case of Mr Hammond being misinformed. I wrote to the Chancellor before Christmas setting out a number of concerns about Making Tax Digital (MTD). I received a reply on his behalf from HMRC assuring me my fears were groundless. In the recently published consultation on MTD the concerns expressed by the accountancy profession over a number of areas were similarly ignored.' Following on from Francis Whitbread’s comments on MTD, Andrew Jackson, Chair of the UK200Group Tax Panel and Head of Tax at UK200Group member Fiander Tovell said, ‘The proposed NI changes would cost each self-employed person a few hundred pounds; HMRC’s estimates are that MTD will cost each business £280, but this is clearly an underestimate. It would be a great shame if businesses are spared a hike in NI, only to have a more costly MTD burden foisted on them.’

My neighbour is at work all hours and leaves their dog ALONE. Not only am I worried about the welfare of the dog, but the constant barking is driving me crazy! What can I (legally) do to stop this? First of all, there are administrative acts which exist that look after the welfare and responsibility of all animals. Additionally, it is legal for Communities of Owners to determine if the ownership of pets is allowed and to limit the number of pets allowed per person or per household in their registered Statutes. This is for owners of the property. The Horizontal Property regime: This looks after the welfare of the rights of and collision of rights of other co-owners in the community.

This applies to animals and animal ownership as well. Meaning that if someone in the community has a pet or pets, this must be allowed in the localityâ€Świthout requiring a zoo license. Under the Horizontal Property regime, you must check the Statutes and internal regulations in order to find about the rules specific to the community about the possession of animals. Local Freemason's Lodge sponsors underprivileged children

At the regular meeting of Santa Faz Lodge No 48 on Monday March 13, a motion was proposed, seconded and approved to sponsor an underprivileged child to attend the summer school which is being organised by Hiram Abiff Lodge No 80 in Guadalest this year. Various Lodges including the Provincial Grand Lodge have sponsored many children to go to

the both educational and entertaining summer school in the past. Last year the Province sponsored eighteen children and hope to achieve a similar number this year. The cheque for â‚Ź350 was presented at the meeting by the WM, W Bro Brian Duncan, in the presence of the DPGM, W Bro R C

Bignell, the APGM, W Bro R A Mitchell and the ProvGCStwd, W Bro K Alcock. The money comes from the Lodge charity fund and has been raised as part of this year's fund raising effort. what’s on APASA Charity Cabaret Evening Following the outstanding success of their Fashion show at the Dance Café in Toscamar last week, local animal charity APASA (Asociación Protectora de Animales de San Antonio) are excited to announce their next event. On Friday April 21, The Pedrera Industrial Estate will play host to an evening at ‘Le Cabaret’, with a cameo tribute to Elvis Presley plus the opportunity to dance along to your favourite golden oldies with Mike Lee. Tickets cost €20 and include a 2 course meal and entry into the grand prize draw. Bookings are essential and can be made by contacting 618 737 999 (Anna) or 634 356 232 (Ian). APASA was founded in 1999 by a group of various nationalities, Spanish, English, German and Swiss, with the aim of rescuing those animals that were evidently abandoned, ill-treated or lost. Initially there were just a dozen dogs, now there are approximately 280, needing full time staff. APASA rely greatly on volunteers, working in the shelter, walking dogs and at their many fund-raising events. All proceeds raised at the Fashion Show will directly fund the goal of making the lives of the dogs better and provide essential care for them.

U3A Vall del Pop news Sugar Craft / Cake Decoration Group At the U3A Vall del Pop general meeting on March 2, three members of the sugar craft/ cake decoration group put on an exhibition of their skills, with samples of the beautiful figures, flowers and ornate shapes they can create. The creations can then be used to decorate cakes for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and a whole host of other special occasions. The group meet once a fortnight in Alcalali. General Meeting with speaker Daniel Herranz At next month’s general meeting on April 6 in Murla, Daniel Herranz will give a talk on Spanish taxes, in their many forms. Daniel started his career in 1995 as a lawyer in Valencia, before becoming a member of the European Young Lawyers Scheme in England, obtaining a Diploma [with merit] in English Commercial Law and a Proficiency in English degree, before becoming a trainee lawyer at a shipping law firm in London. In 1999, Herranz returned to Spain and established his own practice in Benissa. He is also a lecturer at Valencia CEU Law University, Valencia Legal Bar, the Chamber of Commerce and has given numerous seminars to

I can understand if you have premonition that it may be quite scary sometimes. It certainly is my least favourite ability, but it rears up its head from time to time and I cannot avoid it. Whilst the many years of my experience have greatly helped me to eliminate any fear I might have had, to have visions about the future, as sharp as premonition, may be very scary. It comes up with me when the message has to get through to warn me, though often I am powerless to do anything about what I see. New cancer cure – modified yeast Cancerous markers are identified by an algorithm that compares the DNA of healthy and cancerous cells. Scientists have created yeasts capable of triggering immune responses that target cancer, as part of a project funded by Universite Paris-Saclay in France. Clement de Obaldia, a former air traffic controller, retrained in synthetic biology with the aim to find a cure for cancer. In a few months, by forming a team and raising funds, he created a vaccine which, in mice, induces an immune response against skin cancer cells. He modified baker’s yeasts so that they show cancerous cell markers on their surface. Injected close to the tumour, these yeasts cause an immune response and the production of cells called lymphocyte killers, which detect and eliminate cancerous cells. The approach is now undergoing clinical trials in the USA and so far, no side effects have been detected. ‘Most immunotherapy treatments tested today attempt to boost the immune system by raising certain barriers that normally prevent the system from attacking its own cells, cancerous or not,’ says Clement, ‘This approach can bring about serious auto-immune diseases, which a yeast based vaccine approach does not, since it simply aims to guide the immune system.’ ‘Like teaching a dog to recognise certain smells, the targeted cancerous markers are identified by an algorithm that compares the DNA of healthy and cancerous cells, then technology allows us to obtain – in less than a week – a yeast that can target the new marker that has been detected.’ This opens the door to personalised medicine that could one day allow the development of therapies adapted to each individual. Clement’s start-up, Inovactis, is based at Genopole d’Evry, the first BioPark in France dedicated to genetic and genome research. Their work has been possible thanks to a grant of 16,700€ from Universite Paris-Saclay.

How much sugar is too much? The World Health Organization recently recommended a sharp drop in sugar intake. Just 5 per cent of calories should ideally come from added sugars. This is a sharp decrease from their previous findings which recommended a 10 per cent intake of sugar. So, just how much is 5%? Well, the World Health Organisation translates this to about 6 teaspoons of added sugar a day. This equates to about the same as a standard can of soft drink, such as Nestea, The average European consumes almost quadruple the WHO recommendation, wait for it, a whopping 22 teaspoons of added sugar a day. Reducing sugar in your diet can be tricky because it is so ubiquitous. Even healthy sounding foods like cereal and yoghurt are full of added sugars. When you are food shopping, make sure you check the ingredients list on labels. Try to reduce your consumption of processed, packaged foods in favour of fresh produce and lean protein, such as poultry, fish and soy based products. One simple, easy way to make a start is to cut down on cans of soft and sparkling drinks like cola, lemonade and sports drinks. Replace them with water and watch your skin, teeth and eyes improve as your body rehydrates and detoxes itself.

One in two UK kids refuses to eat veg Almost half (46 per cent) of British children REFUSE to eat vegetables, according to a new study of parents. Researchers surveyed UK parents about the eating habits of their children - and revealed a staggering 75 per cent have worries or concerns about their fussy eating. A further 52 per cent claimed their child's refusal to eat healthy foods is a major issue, according to the study. According to the report, 66 per cent of parents say trying to get their children to eat healthily is a stressful experience. Overall, 82 per cent of the parents who took part in the study claimed there are some foods that their child simply will not eat – including veg, salad, meat, fish and dairy – however according to data, vegetables are the main cause for concern, with 46 per cent of children refusing to eat them. Greens such as cabbage (43 per cent of children will not eat it), spinach (39 per cent) and broccoli (39 per cent) were among the main vegetables the nation's parents struggle to feed their children. Mushrooms (39 per cent) and beetroot (35 per cent) were also revealed as foods kids are highly likely to refuse, while 13 per cent said their child would not eat any red meat - and a further one in ten said their children will not eat an apple. A desperate 38 per cent said the stress of mealtimes with their children has led to rows with

their other half – with 59 per cent saying they often feel at the wits end with the problem. The research revealed one of the major reasons children are picky with food is because they don't know where it comes from, with 64 per cent of parents saying their children have never grown any kind of vegetable at home compared to just 36 per cent who say they have. And of the 36 per cent who said they had tried to grow their own food, 32 per cent said it made their children more willing to try new foods. More than half of those who took part in the study (53 per cent) say they are embarrassed when at other people's houses because their children refuse to eat anything, while 64 per cent admitted they have caved in and given their children something high in sugar, salt or fat – simply to avoid a scene. The study also revealed 48 per cent of parents say they feel pressure from other parents posting pics of their children eating adventurous foods on social media. A further 60 per cent say they find family mealtimes stressful and a further 47 per cent say they avoid going to restaurants with their children because they know they won't be able to find anything on the menu their kids will eat. What constitutes good oral health? Myth-busting with FDI World Dental Federation. World Oral Health Day (WOHD) was celebrated on Monday this week. WOHD was launched by FDI World Dental Federation (FDI) to raise global awareness on the prevention and control of oral disease and this year they released the results from a survey carried out in 12 countries, revealing what people around the world believe to be good oral health practices. The survey was carried out in the UK, the US, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Poland, South Africa, India and Egypt and has exposed a significant disparity between what people believe to be good oral health practices, versus what they actually do. Eight of the countries reported that 50 percent or more of the people surveyed think it is important to brush your teeth straight after every main meal. Brazil, Mexico, Egypt and Poland were the worst offenders of this incorrect oral health practice (84 per cent, 81 per cent, 62 per cent and 60 per cent respectively). FDI recommends waiting at least 30 minutes after eating to brush your teeth to avoid weakening tooth enamel. ‘These survey results highlight an alarming discrepancy between knowledge and actual good oral health practices,’ said Dr Patrick Hescot, FDI President. ‘We want everyone to take control of their oral health this World Oral Health Day and understand that by adopting good oral hygiene habits, avoiding risk factors and having a regular dental check-up, they can help protect their mouths. A healthy mouth allows us to speak, smile, smell, taste, touch, chew, swallow and convey a range of emotions with confidence and without pain, discomfort and disease. Good oral health matters and translates to a better quality of life.’ The majority of countries surveyed incorrectly believe that rinsing the mouth out with water after brushing is important; Brazil, South Africa, Mexico, India and Canada were found to practice this myth the most (77 per cent, 75 per cent, 73 per cent, 67 per cent and 67 per cent respectively). It is actually recommended not to rinse with water straight after brushing to allow maximum exposure to fluoride, which will optimize the preventative effects. Nearly half the population surveyed in India, South Africa, Brazil and Poland (52 per cent, 49 per cent, 48 per cent and 42 per cent respectively), felt that drinking fruit juice rather

than fizzy drinks was important for good oral health. Fruit juice however, can also be high in sugar which can cause tooth decay. FDI recommends keeping consumption of sugary drinks to a minimum as part of a healthy, balanced diet. Dr Edoardo Cavalle, WOHD Task Team Chair, stated ‘Understanding good oral health practices and adopting them early in life, will help to maintain optimal oral health into old age and ensure you live a long life free from physical pain and often emotional suffering caused by oral disease.’

How to grow a pallet garden With so many people becoming more conscious of repurposing rather than impacting on landfill with unnecessary waste, gardening with wooden pallets has never been more popular. Moving from a creative idea to a garden trend, today, gardeners are using pallets for planting everything from herbs to succulents. We’ve all seen them, used wooden pallets leant up beside markets and shops, waiting to go to the Ecoparque. Then someone thought of bringing those wooden pallets into the garden and planting veggies, flowers or other plants between the bars. Gardening with wooden pallets is an easy and inexpensive way to create a vertical planting area when space is tight. If you are wondering how to grow a pallet garden, all you need is a roll of landscaping paper, sandpaper, a staple gun and staples, hammer and nails and some potting soil. And of course, your plants! Follow these instructions to get started: 1. Sand down any rough spots on your pallet. If the back of your pallet doesn’t have much support, find some scrap wood, roughly 3 to 4 inches wide and 1/4 inch thick (or the thickness of the rest of your supports) and cut it down to the width of your pallet. Using two nails on each side, add supports so they are roughly even down the back of your pallet. 2. Double or triple up your landscaping fabric and begin the stapling fun. Staple fabric along the back, bottom and sides of the pallet, taking care at the corners to fold in the fabric so no soil will spill out. 3. Lay the pallet flat and pour potting soil through slats, pressing soil down firmly. Leave enough room to begin planting your succulents. 4. Begin planting, starting at the bottom of the pallet and ending at the top. Make sure soil is firmly packed in each layer as you move up. Add more soil as needed so that plants are tightly packed at the end. 5. Water your wall garden thoroughly and let it remain horizontal for 1 to 2 weeks to allow plants to take root. After 1 to 2 weeks, you can set it upright. Use your creativity to think of different pallet gardening ideas to try. You can start vegetable gardening with wooden pallets, create a fragrance garden or grow small succulents. Once you’ve started planting in wooden pallets in the garden, many other ideas will come to you. DIY pallet gardening is fun, and takes up very little room.

Avoid making the same mistakes and finding yourself mid-summer wondering where it all went wrong.

How many times do you look at the kitchen or bathroom tiles in your home and think …. I hate you? Tiling lasts forever, but styles and colours quickly go out of fashion leaving important rooms in your house or apartment looking hideously outdated. Re-tiling can be expensive for those on a budget, so a cheaper option is painting over the tile work to give a fresher, more modern image. There are two important components to painting ceramic tiling, these are, preparing the surface properly and using the right type of paint. Here’s how to go about painting tile. As with most painting jobs, preparation is the key to success. To prepare tile for painting: • Clean Tile: Clean the tile to remove any dirt, mildew, or soap scum using an abrasive bathroom cleaner. After cleaning, wipe the surface down with a clean, wet sponge to remove any residue, then allow the surface to dry thoroughly. • Sand Tile: Lightly sand the tile with fine (180-220 grit) synthetic grit sandpaper, such as silicon carbide

or aluminium oxide, to take the gloss off the glazed surface. An orbital sander will do a faster and better job than hand sanding. • Remove Dust: Wipe down the surface with a damp cloth to remove any dust and allow to dry before painting. Painting There are two painting options for tiles: 1. Latex Paint: Apply one to two coats of a bonding primer that’s made to adhere to surfaces such as tile. Allow the primer to dry for the recommended time, then follow with two topcoats of acrylic latex wall paint. 2. Epoxy Paint: Apply two coats of a two-part epoxy paint that’s made for tile and other hard to paint surfaces, such as Rust-Oleum Tub & Tile. Follow the directions carefully, and allow the recommended drying time before using. The colours available for epoxy paint may be limited. Follow these instructions carefully and you will transform your home without the mess, noise and cost of re-tiling.

Not labeling plants Always label the seeds you have sown Aside from remembering where you planted last spring; you can also keep track of which seedlings are which during the early days when many plants look exactly the same. Labeling young plants ensures that they are watered, fertilised and cared for according to their needs. Having unrealistic expectations Some plants are easier than others to grow, so having a go at a small number of a variety of plants will allow you to test the waters and see how much you really have time to commit to. Even more so if this is your first year planting a vegetable or flower garden, try not to overdo it. The dream of having a large and thriving garden is a lofty goal and as any experienced gardening expert will tell you, a lot of work. Planting the wrong thing Be sure to read up on the plants you intend to grow and make sure they are suited to your garden and climate. Some plants sprawl wide and low and can take over entire areas of the garden that you would rather they didn’t. Other plants require a lot of water, or more sunlight than your garden provides. Read the labels, choose what best aligns with your space, climate and goals and then decide which of those you want to plant.

‘Indestructible’ Nokia 3310 is back At the end of February, the Nokia 3310 was officially relaunched. The device first went on sale in the year 2000 and has since sold over 126 million units across the globe, making it one of the world’s best loved phones. HMD, the Finnish company which purchased the rights to Nokia’s name in December 2016, is retailing the phone at just over £40 (46€). With such a low price point, it is hoped the new version could become just as popular as the original cult classic. With the 3310’s plastic shell and clicky buttons, the phone is renowned for its toughness and has long endured as an internet meme due to seemingly being indestructible. Famous for its durability, a quick Google search for Nokia 3310 insurance will throw up thousands of results, with

The Prancing Horse celebrates 70 years Enzo Ferrari, founder of the luxury car marque, once famously said “The best Ferrari is the next one”. So to celebrate their 70th birthday this year, the company which bears his name, lined up their very latest model alongside the first model they produced, dating from 1947 outside their factory gates in Maranello Italy. Seventy years ago the Ferrari 125S was the first road production model to feature the iconic prancing horse badge and was only introduced reluctantly by Enzo to fund the development of racing cars for the Motor Racing team which still bears his name today. He had previously spent ten years working for Alfa Romeo, heading up their Scuderia Ferrari racing department. In 1938, Alfa Romeo brought it’s racing team in-house, with the formation of Alfa Corse in Milano, effectively disbanding Scuderia Ferrari. Enzo, was taken on as manager of the new team, but left a year later. He was then forced to sign an agreement promising not to use the Ferrari name in association with races or racing cars for at least four years. He therefore formed a company called Auto Avio Construzioni and spent the next eight years, throughout World War 2 working on production, later reforming Scuderia Ferrari, which literally means Ferrari Stable, or Team Ferrari, as it known today. The newest model, their limited-edition hypercar, the LaFerrari Aperta, has an eye watering price tag of around €1.2 million and is considered to be the most expensive car ever sold. It’s

celebrity owners include Kitchen Nightmares chef Gordon Ramsey, who has been filmed driving his around London for the Top Gear TV show. This year, Ferrari will commemorate their seventy year anniversary, by producing seventy bespoke cars. Each one of these liveries will be created just the once and will include at least one car from every model in their current range. All of these supercars, destined to become much cherished collectors items, come complete with a 70th Anniversary logo, and a name plate stating the model that inspired it. Last December the company also unveiled their limited edition model, the J50, produced to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ferrari in Japan. Only 10 of these will be built. My First Car The first car I ever owned was a Triumph Toledo. It cost me 70£! The Triumph Toledo was produced by British Leyland from 1970 to 1976. First introduced in August 1970 as a cheaper version of the Triumph 1300, which was at the same time replaced by the Triumph 1500. The Toledo, like the front-wheel drive 1500, came with a new split grille at the front, but instead of the 1500s twin round headlamps, it had single rectangular units set in a grey plastic grille. The rear end was like that of the 1300 except for the tail lights, which were of a simpler, flat-faced design. The biggest change for the Toledo was a move to rear-wheel drive and live rear axle (still with coil springs), in the interest of simplicity and low production costs. The interior was also cheaper, with wood confined to a dashboard consisting of a simple plank with holes drilled for the quite basic instrumentation but the interior was a cut above most other small cars at a time when black plastic was common place. Initially, the Toledo was only available as a two-door saloon with the 1300 cc engine of 58 bhp (43 kW) net. Drum brakes were fitted all round and there was no overdrive or automatic option available. In March 1971 a 4-door “special export” version was launched at the Geneva Motor Show, featuring a 1500 cc engine in single and twin carburettor “TC” form producing 61 and 64 bhp (45 and 48 kW) net, respectively. From late August 1971 the four-door model was also available on the

home market. The four-door Toledo featured the same side body pressings as the Triumph 1300. The interior furnishings were in most respects indistinguishable between the two versions, but buyers of the four-door car received two extra ashtrays in each of the extra doors. Radial ply tyres were specified in place of the cross-plies offered on the two-door car, compensating for the additional 50 kg (approx) of weight involved in installing the extra doors. The two-door model differed very little from the more popular four-door model in overall appearance, the twodoor featured non-wraparound front and rear bumpers (although this would change in 1973 to full wraparound bumpers), whilst the four-door featured wraparound bumpers from the start. Two front bumper under-riders were fitted to the two-door model; however these were deleted on later cars from around late 1972 / early 1973. The specification gradually improved over the years. In October 1972 front disc brakes were fitted as standard on both models and a heated rear window became standard equipment by late 1973 / early 1974. In March 1975 the two-door version was dropped: the four-door model continued in production for another year, but in improved specification form. The existing

Triumph Herald three-rail type gearbox was replaced with a Triumph Spitfire 1500 type single-rail gearbox and the car was fitted with a new clutch. The new look Toledo was also fitted with side body trims, new look black type front grille (replacing the silver type front grille) and a stainless trim was added to the side roof guttering. The specification again improved; standard equipment now included a rear-view dipping mirror, fasten seat belt warning light, reclining front seats (previously an option), twin reversing lights (also previously an option), cigar lighter, hazard warning lights and a driver’s exterior door mirror. A laminated windscreen, front head rests and brushed nylon seat facings were optional extras. The Toledo was finally replaced by the Dolomite 1300 and 1500 in March 1976. Total production was 119,182 cars, making it one of Triumph’s best-selling small saloon cars.

Valldigna Golf Society's event was in danger of being cancelled altogether if last Monday's torrential rain had continued much longer, but snorkels and flippers proved surplus to requirements the next day as sunshine greeted the golfers and guests. The breeze was a little strong, but the course seemed remarkably unaffected by the previous days monsoon conditions. The golf did not disappoint either. Winner, Pat Bradden came in with 36 points, Sandor Rozsa was hot on his heels with 34 points and third on 29 points came Tom Smith. This months guest prize went to Swedish colleague,

Pallas Jonsson with 34 points. Six nearest the pin competitions are held each month and these were won by Sture Rydstrum Hole 3, Pallas Jonsson Hole 5, Stephen Forster Hole 14, Peter Nunn Hole 15, Steve Arnold Hole 16, Anders Larsson Hole 17. The two Longest Drive winners were Pat Bradden on Hole 11 and Pallas Jonsson on Hole 12. Although the golf is taken very seriously, the Society days also have a fun aspect, so to celebrate the upcoming St Patick's Day a prize was given for Best Dressed Leprechaun. This was won by Scotsman Don Cubban.

La Vila Race Day Sunday March 26th This coming Sunday sees the annual Cursa Popular I Volta a Peu La Vilajoyosa, which is now in its tenth year. Competitors will run a course of either 8.7km, or a shorter 5km. These will be followed by children's races of various distances and categories. The longer race, Cursa Popular begins at 10am, followed by the shorter Volta a Peu five minutes later. Both races begin and end on the seafront promenade. Once complete, the children's competition begins around 11.30am As in previous years, competitors and spectators are asked to bring along donations of cocao and sugar, which are then passed on to local charity Caritas La Vila.

They also hold a popular Lost Balls Competition, where each player pays €2 to guess the number of balls lost and the winner takes away all the money collected. This months total number of balls lost was 65 but as no one claimed the prize it rolls over to the next game on April 18th, winner takes all. The team Playas De Benidorm won a tense contest against local rivals CV Elche 3-1. The girls have been leading the regional league all season and this victory means they will now qualify for the regional finals in Benidorm on April 1st and 2nd, where they will be up against three other teams. The winner of this final will go forward to represent the region in the National Finals on April 26th to 30th. After losing the first game, the team regrouped and battled back to draw level and take control of the match, with some great attacking play from Amparo Velez. The final score of 25-21, 15-25, 22-25, 23-25 shows how close each game was as the all the players held their nerve in the final stages. On a good weekend for Playas de Benidorm, the junior girls team beat CV Villena 3-0 at home, despite not playing up to their usual standards, in a match littered with mistakes.
