Now doctors at the Hospital de Orihuela have begun to prescribe antibiotic treatments “advised” by their mobile phone. It’s a mobile application that, depending on the symptoms, will tell you which is the best antibiotic treatment most appropriate . “The application chooses the antibiotics with more probability of success in the region and with less impact on the resistance on the environment”, assures the Cabinet of Communication. This has been possible thanks to a team of the Program for Optimization of the use of Antimicrobials, which has been in charge of producing the Guide to Empirical Antibiotics in the APP. Infrastructure partnership to improve in Alicante and beyond Talks of an investment plan for a more extensive network. by Tahnee Wright María José Salvador, Minister of Housing, Public Works and Vertebration of Alicante, met with the Ministry of Public Works this week to propose a bilateral schedule of work between the two administrations. The primary purpose of the schedule is to create an initiative for Strategic Infrastructures of the Valencian Community. The aim of the initiative is to redefine both infrastructure and investment priorities for the Region of Valencia further to years of inactivity and unmet protocols. Salvador has identified the citizens require a much improved commuter service, with the region seeing 20 million travelers this year so far alone. The Minister has discussed an investment plan for a more extensive network with lines such as Castelló-Vinaròs, San Vicente del Raspeig-Villena, modernisation of the XàtivaAlcoi lines or the creation of the Costa Train. The ministry has expressed its agreement to review the 9 protocols and agreements that have been in place for many years but have been persistently violated. Together, the administrations will endeavour to establish a new framework that adapts to the current situation and requirements of the region and its residents and visitors.

In considering the economic deficit of the community, the conselleria reported that the bidding rate for Communidad Valencia is currently at 5.4%, well below the 11% average GDP values. The first step for the Generalitat is to come to a suitable partnership agreement with the Ministry of Public Works to deliver superior infrastructure and transport services to the region, the primary target being to develop and improve the major railway infrastructures, urban area traffic controls and port access.

Continued from front page This new application streamlines the prescription process and will serve to guide the doctor in the use of the antibiotic most appropriate to any serious infection that can be present in a patient. All this without the need to wait for the studies necessary to specify what type of infection the patient is suffering from. The app production team also has the support of the WebResist Project, which involves important specialists from throughout Europe, who provide the necessary data for the use of antimicrobials and bacterial resistance for the design and evaluation of the different programmes. This guide, unlike others, has some features that make it unique. First, it relies on antimicrobial resistance data obtained from the WebResist Project and is automatically updated. On the other hand, it provides an estimate of the probability of success of each antibiotic when administered to the patient pending the microbiological study and other diagnostic tests. Likewise, PROA, the author of the guide, at the time of its development, chose antibiotics, not only with more probability of success in their region, but also with less impact on the resistance in their environment. Access to the Empirical Antibiotic Guide as well as being available through the mobile application is available to the hospital physicians and the entire Department of Health on the Department's website.

Salvador has requested that the Secretary of State urgently addresses the problems in the Mediterranean Corridor, highlighting that the public should be kept informed of clear timescales for works. She has also requested that clear commitment to infrastructure is shown in the 2017 and 2018 budgets. Other issues highlighted included the need to unblock the Sagunt-Teruel-Zaragoza connection as well as provide high-speed connection services between Alicante, Valencia and Castelló.

Quirónsalud and the British Residents’ Association sign a collaboration agreement on prevention Hospital QuirónsaludTorrevieja has signed a collaboration agreement with the Help Vega Baja Association of British residents to offer them advantageous conditions in medical services as well as in health prevention campaigns. The signing ceremony was attended by the managing director of the Hospital QuirónsaludTorrevieja, Francisco Fiestras and the president of the Help Vega Baja Association, Michele Lindsey Masson. The agreement means residents will, amongst other benefits, receive a free of charge basic annual blood analysis along with dental cleaning, as well as a 10% discount on all private health services of Quirónsalud (not covered by insurers or other companies). The initiative is part of the line of care prevention initiated by the Hospital QuirónsaludTorrevieja with the aim of improving the relations for foreign residents in the region of Vega Baja. In its continuous effort of renewal and adaptation, the Hospital Quirónsalud de Torrevieja offers the patient qualified care and personalised treatment. The province provides other centres of consultation and diagnosis: Quirónsalud Santa Pola Medical Center and Center Doctor QuirónsaludOrihuela. Quirónsalud is the largest hospital group in Spain and the third largest in Europe. It is present in 13 autonomous communities and has the most advanced technology with more than 6,200 beds in the 80 centres, as well as large teams of highly specialized professionals. Seven of Quirónsalud’s hospitals are universities and they work in promoting and teaching medical and scientific research. They also run the Health Research Institute of the FJD, a unique private research centre accredited by the Ministry of Research, Development and Innovation. Quirónsalud’s healthcare service is organised into units and transversal networks to optimize the experience and clinical translation of their investigations. Currently, Quirónsalud is developing more than 1,600 research projects throughout Spain, pioneering in different specialties such as cardiology, endocrinology, gynecology, neurology and oncology.

Spain raises 15billion€ in the fight against fraud The Spanish Treasury obtained nearly 15billion€ in the fight against fraud in 2016. The sum recovered by the tax inspectors was down 4.98% in comparison to 15.664billion€ raised in 2015, with officials confirming the absence of singular items as the reason.

Elche gearing up for a long run Elche is getting ready to welcome runners this Saturday 11 of March for the Transilicitana, a competitive run where participants are expected to cover, either by walking or running, a 104 kilometre route in 24 hours. The eight Transilicitana event will start at 10am from El Paseo de la Estación in the centre of Elche, and finish at Traspalacio, in front of the Museum of Archaeology and History. 750 participants are expected to take part in the event. The route will take participants all the way to El Altet and the sea front at Los Arenales del Sol, before turning back towards Elche and the final destination. It will be a real test for endurance for all the runners, who are expected to take on the challenging route through the day and the night.

Pascual Flores undecided future The ongoing saga surrounding the Schooner Pascual Flores, which remains unused after many years in Torrevieja's harbour, continues. by Keith Nicol Having been close to being commissioned as a tourist office and attraction for the City of Torrevieja, visiting ports around Europe, since the last election, the yacht has remained docked in Torrevieja and her future uncertain. This week the Partido Popular asked the maritime captain in Alicante to verify the "abandonment" of the Pascual Flores with Councillor Eduardo Gil Rebollo warning about the "danger" of the woodwork going rotten. The PP has demanded that the Maritime Captaincy of Alicante, who are responsible for the security of the port of Torrevieja, to check the "state of abandonment", which in his opinion, is present in the Pascual Flores. Councillor Rebollo presented a letter to Cayetano PĂŠrez, maritime captain of the Province of Alicante, requesting him to carry out an inspection visit before "the situation becomes dangerous onboard for those maintenance workers on the boat." According to the Councillor, the current government has "abandoned the ship to its own fate". Although completely rebuilt more than a decade ago, the Pascual Flores was the last boat built on the

shores of Torrevieja, in 1917. As one of the featured ships of the BBC series the Onedin Line, back in the seventies, the ship became a floating restaurant and fell into disrepair before being bought by the City of Torrevieja and rebuilt a an estimated cost of about four million euros. However the schooner never had the opportunity to sail nor to be used for what was she was conceived for as a sailing school of the Generalitat. It has been exhibited in the port, for years, but apart from a few private visits, visitors to the area have not been able to go onboard her as part f the floating museums. Gil Rebollo denounced "the lack of transparency, already common in the government team�, thus the Councillor approached the Ministry of Development and in turn the Captaincy to take action in the matter. The sailboat has various maintenance problems, it has leaks that must be pumped on a periodic basis, an issue that's its had almost since it was completed in 2008, and which were aggravated with the recent trip to Algeciras, to check the overall condition of the beautiful vessel.

CaixaBank awarded ‘best private bank in Spain’ Bank receives award for the third consecutive year from Euromoney. by Tahnee Wright CaixaBank is the leading Spanish bank by market share and has been recognised by Euromoney as the best private banking entity in Spain in the Private Banking Survey 2017. CaixaBank’s recognition for the third year in a row comes as a result of a survey conducted by Euromoney between private banking entities, managers of high heritages and family offices around the world, who have identified the best private banking entities for the quality of their services and business model. CaixaBank Private Banking has grown 18.10% in managed assets in the last three years and now serves 14.36% more customers than in 2014, from 50,085 customers in 2014 to 57,281 at the end of 2016. In addition to the prize for the best private banking entity, CaixaBank, chaired by Jordi Gual and whose CEO is Gonzalo Gortázar, was recognised as the best entity in nine other categories, three more than in the 2016 edition. Furthermore, following the EU’s regulatory guidelines, in terms of the number of clients advised (clients who have signed an advisory agreement and a suitability test) the bank has experienced a 22.57% increase in the last three years, from 41,921 clients advised in 2014 to 51,381 in 2016. In terms of clients with high equity value, the bank has also experienced strong growth in the the last three years, from 646 customers in 2014 to 829 in 2016, an increase of 28.33%. Guardia Civil intercepts 21,000 units of counterfeit erectile dysfunction pills at Alicante Airport

A total of 21,000 pills were found, with a market price value of approximately 210,000€. Three men have been arrested, a 29-year old Belgian, a 39-year old Spaniard of 39 and a 39-year old man of Chinese origin. The men, listed as the recipients of these shipments, are residents of Daya Nueva, Sant Vicente del Raspeig and Alicante. The police are currently investigating whether the act could constitute two criminal offences - both for smuggling and another for infringing public health. The Guardia Civil warns that the consumption of this type of medication poses a serious health risk, since they are marketed ‘without having been subjected to any type of medical control’. By order of a report issued by the Health Subdelegation of the Government, the pills will be held for examination as there is the possibility they could contain a substance dangerous for human consumption, especially as they are not authorised, outside sanitary control and not intended for a person specifically authorised to sell them. It is thought the three accused purchased the pills both to sell them illegally and for their own consumption.

Maritime rescue by Red Cross Along the Mazarrón beaches, the team of 139 staff and volunteers of the Red Cross were called to action on 169 occasions for maritime assistance and interventions during the past year 2016. This was part of the program of Maritime Rescue that the humanitarian institution develops in the Region of Murcia. These activities were all related to the protection of human life at sea, as a program of intervention in emergency maritime situations in the marine environment. The program was developed by the Red Cross under the legal framework provided by the agreement that the Spanish State has agreed with IMO (International Maritime Organization ), as well as in the Framework Convention and Plans of Action of Red Cross with SASEMAR. The involvement and participation of Red Cross activities in the Region of Murcia is regulated by an Autonomous Convention with the General Direction of Citizen Security and Emergencies, dependent on the Ministry of Presidency. The activities carried out by the Red Cross in this regard are, fundamentally, the rescue of human lives, search and rescue of missing persons on the coast, support in search operations for survivors, support in activities to fight pollution in the marine environment, towing and technical assistance of boats, health care or any other type of care to people who are in difficult situation at sea, accompanying and escorting other boats etc. For this the volunteer teams have seven boats of level B, which are located in Cartagena, Cabo de Palos, Lo Pagan, Mazarron, San Pedro del Pinatar and Aguilas.

Building catches fire in Aguilas Eight people treated by Red Cross and paramedics. by Tahnee Wright A building in Aguilas was evacuated this week after a fire, originating in the garage, blazed through the block. The Emergency Coordination Centre of Murcia confirmed that the fire caused damage to two cars. A neighbour, based on the third floor of the building in the town of Calle Blas Rosique Blaya, first alerted the emergency services, reporting a mass of smoke. Police arrived at the scene to evacuate the whole building as residents were found trapped on their balconies. Fire crews, the Red Cross and ambulance crews were also dispatched – eight people were treated at the scene by Red Cross, two of whom were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.

Cars collide with school bus in Orihuela Two teenagers and a woman were transferred to hospital in Vega Baja on Wednesday following a traffic accident between a school bus and two cars on the CV-930, in the municipality of Orihuela. The Center of Information and Emergency Coordination (CICU) dispatched a Basic Life Support Unit (SVB) to the scene at around 8am. A 14-year old minor suffered a head wound, another 17year old suffered neck pain and a 35-year old woman also suffered neck pain.

Fire at old KKO nightclub What was once one of the top disco nightclubs in Torrevieja, was left on the verge of needing to be demolished after a fire on Tuesday night. by Keith Nicol However, thanks to quick action of local firefighters and the Guardia Civil, the discotheque was saved from becoming a pile of ashes and may live to play music on another day. KKO closed their doors in 2012 after almost 20 years in business however they have held other evens in Alicante and Music using the KKO name. Although the site has been looked at to reopen it by a number of possible investors, it has not had any new infrastructure put into it, while other new and local discos close to KKO, have flourished in the area. Those who have lived here a while may remember the search lights pointed into the sky on weekends, lighting up the route to their front door for many years. The fire was first reported at around 10.00pm on Tuesday when old furniture tat was stored at the entrance to the building, began to burn on the porch of the entrance of the Disco, which is located in the heart of the Industrial Park CasaGrande. The amount of smoke from the fire caused all the alarms to set off in the building and with the fire station and Guardia Civil HQ just a few minutes away, they were quickly on scene. The city’s security forces and a fire truck managed to suffocate the fire in a few minutes adverting what could have been a large and dangerous fire, due to the high flames the burning material. Investigation into the cause of the fire continues however arson has not been ruled out.

MABS Cancer Support Roadshow in Murcia MABS Cancer Support Group would like to thank all volunteers who came to their rescue following the bad weather experienced of late. Sadly, MABS was not lucky enough to escape unaffected, with flooding in both their San Javier and Mazarrón medical equipment storage rooms, but help was at hand – the flooded areas were swabbed, a de-humidifier was purchased and normality soon returned. Looking ahead to spring, especially given the delightful temperatures spreading across the coastline, MABS are preparing for their Road Show which takes place in Murcia on Wednesday 15th March in the Las Claras Centro Municipal. The Murcia group will be explaining who they are, how they operate and where they are based. They will also host a question and answer session after the presentation and, of course, pick the winner of the free raffle who will win a voucher for 20€ to spend in the MABS shop in San Javier. The event breaks for lunch and returns in the evening again from 5.00pm with a new exhibition of search and rescue dogs and at 6:00pm. a parade of dogs looking for a new forever home, with the fair closing at 7.00pm. Lots to do on Sunday and if you time it right, you can visit Expo Torrevieja in the morning and then the NGO Fair in the

evening, when it will be much easier to find parking downtown. Next Friday the action moves to Cabo Roig with the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Music and activities on the Cabo Roig strip start at around noon with music and entertainment from TKO with the dignitaries, classic cars, motorbikes, dozens of floats and St.Patrick himself getting ready for the off around 3.00pm. From the Prairie to Passchendaele by Keith Nicol Just before Christmas, former Director of the Foreign Residents Office, Graham Knight, accompanied by Joy Lennick and Andy Ormiston, welcomed guests to the official book launch of Graham’s Grandfather’s book, ‘From The Prairie To Passchendaele” by Fred Knight. In WW1, Fred fought with the famed ‘Canadian 10th Infantry’ and was awarded the Military Medal for his conspicuous bravery and although suffering from Parkinson’s he managed to write out part of life’s story which Graham had kept under wraps for years and finally decided that in his own retirement years, it was a story worthy of being told. Graham took the hundreds of pages of foolscap paper to local prize winning author Joy Lennick back in 2015 with the book finally being published on Remembrance Day, 11/11/2016. Graham said: “Next year, 2017, marks the centenary of Passchendaele, one of the more famous battles of WW1 and it’s fitting that his story be told now and also it and can reach out to new audiences.” Andy spoke of his own grandfather and family fighting in WWI and terrible consequences suffered by those who returned without limbs, shell shocked or disabled in some way. Back in WWI, today’s post combat syndromes were not understood. Many soldiers on both sides who were suffering from shell shock were often put before their own firing squads by officers who were totally out of touch with the realities of this first ever trench warfare, and the fa-

Mike joins Marie Joy Another local entertainer passed this week in Torrevieja: Mike Davis. His beloved wife and stage partner for over 50 years Marie Joy passed away last month and Mike followed her on Sunday. Having retired to Spain, they just could not set aside that urge to perform and over the years the couple raised many thousands of Euros for local charities and organisations and were much loved and respected in the local community. They were instrumental in setting up and fronting the International Charity Event at the Eras de la Sal, until 2006, when the venue was temporarily closed for improvements. In August 2016 they celebrated 50 Golden years together and were featured in an article celebrating their life in variety theatre in last August’s Torrevieja Outlook and in British Music Hall Society’s magazine, The Call Boy. Local Author and Historian Andy Ormiston said about the couple: “Marie Joy met Mike Davies, then a young professional singer and compere, in 1966 at Cleopatra’s Club in Cardiff. She was a bit put out when Mike told her she had to do the opening act, not always the very best spot in variety shows, so argued with him as he explained about another act that moved around the audience. She argued that he had to go and tell the manager that she was not appearing in the opening spot. So poor Mike set off to see the man with the reputation of a fiery temper, but turned round and said to her, “I tell you what, you go and tell him.” So that was that and she did do the opening numbers and that was beginning of a new relationship on and off stage.” Mike was a crooner and his performance included a tribute style act to Frankie Vaughan; on one occasion he was faced with the daunting prospect of the man himself appearing on stage at the same theatre for a week. Mike was a bit apprehensive when Frankie approached and said, “I hear you do a lookalike act of me and you’re very good at it. Let’s see how it goes.” So Mike put on his straw hat, clutched his cane and said, “Follow me” and both of them did the famous “Give Me the Moonlight,” routine to great applause and appreciation on the part of the audience and Frankie Vaughan. Mike followed Marie Joy to that great stage in the sky on Sunday and both of them are dearly missed.

by Tahnee Wright The Association of Golf Courses has promoted the province as a golfing destination for 25 years, managing to ensure its position as one of the best locations in Europe for the practice of golf. Golf is one of the engines of the provincial tourism industry, generating an economic impact of 440millionâ‚Ź, (8% of the income of the province of Alicante) and 7,518 jobs (1.27% of provincial employment). Following the success of its first promotional event of this year, the Golf Messe in Zurich, the Association of Golf Courses is advancing in its Calendar of Actions of Foreign Promotion for 2017, having recently attend Ferie For Alle, the largest and most important golf fair in Denmark. Ferie For Alle is the ideal place to promote golfing holiday destinations and the event

celebrated its 20th edition this year with an avalanche of 59,143 visitors who paraded through the Herning Mase Center. Between 24th and 26th February, the center held 1,177 exhibitors from 40 different countries. Danish golfers are already very present on the Costa Blanca. Visitor numbers are increasing every year with the potential to continue growing. Promoted this year were golf and accommodation offerings in the fields of Alenda, La Finca, Las Ramblas and VillamartĂ­n. MeliĂĄ Villaitana and Hotel Bonalba were also to be promoted but the respective representatives were trapped by the storm that hit northern Europe at Amsterdam airport and could not reach Denmark. As per its Calendar of Actions of Foreign Promotion for 2017, the Association will also attend the Helsinki Golf Fair in Finland.

Unemployment stable during February The month of February ended with 8,719 unemployed in Torrevieja; 0.10% less than in January, which ended with 8,728 people, without work, according to Servef data. The fall in unemployment, which is insignificant, is through employment in the services sector, which registered a fall of 0.16%, but was hurt by the construction sector, that registered a slight increase of 0.42%. The figures improve in all age groups, except for those under 26 years of age.

Municipal Theatre close to re-opening by Keith Nicol There can be little doubt that even from the opening night concert staring Christopher Cross in Torrevieja’s Municipal Theatre, that the theatre had a number of design faults. From an architectural students point of view, it was poorly conceived for a typical audience of those over sixty, which make up the majority of the population of the city’s population. It had few places for wheel chairs; only two rows of seats at the flat bottom level: strip lighting in the middle instead of the normal edge of the steps and no obvious way out in case of fire or emergency, except for the two main entrance/exits. It’s saga of how much it cost and it’s budget and it’s licences became the typical political ping pong ball finally resulting the present government closing down the theatre when they took power, but then seemingly doing nothing to bring it up to the correct specifications for over a year. Now, eighteen months later, there may be light at the end of the tunnel and the theatre may be close to reopening again, however without any, or with only a few future bookings of any acts of performances for the culturaly starved local residents and visitors to look forward to. This week the Mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón, reported that work on the Municipal Theatre is underway and currently, work is being done in the stairway area where a hole is being drilled in a corner of each landing, which will allow the room to have adequate facilities in the event of a fire. The drilling work has to be carried out on the two stairways of the building “as demanded by the report of the Administrative Certification Body (OCA).” The work includes the drill-

ing of the floor slabs of all the levels so that the stairs can be used in case of fire. The mayor indicated that he hopes that within a few weeks work will be concluded. In addition, he pointed out that other elements of the building, like “light boxes”, must also be acted upon and other measures included in the aforementioned report concerning the safety of the building in case of evacuation and emergencies. Along with work on the staircases, cleaning work is being done to make everything ready when the work is completed . The mayor also said that materials that have been left in the storage in the rehearsal room, on the upper level of the building, have also been removed as there was a real danger in case of fire since it was flammable material. The area can now be used for the first time for what it was originally conceived for. The same can be said of the soundproofed audio room, which was again poorly designed and only used for storage, with a temporary audio and lighting desk set up at the rare of the theatre a few years ago to run the audio visual elements within the theatre.

Rock Against Cancer After their first fundraising campaign on behalf of the AECC in Torrevieja in 2015, Rock Against Cancer will return to the stage on Saturday, June 10 in Torrevieja. Neil Watt, the owner of Torreveja’s original rock pub-cafe, Monroe’s said he; “Received great support from musicians and the public in 2015 and we are now looking for more bands, sponsorship and your support for our next Rock Against Cancer concert on June 10th, 2017. Already signed up on the bill are local punk band Sensa Yuma, Wild Side, Atlanta Records and RAIS, with other to follow. Any bands wishing to take part should contact Neil directly for more information. The venue for the event has yet to be decided but paperwork has been submitted to close off the bottom end of Calle Apolo, beside Monroe’s Music Pub and the AECC office, to set up the stage and have a have a great day of music, fun and laughter, all for a great cause. Neil added: “We need the support of the public to make this day successful. The team from Monroe’s will be at Expo Torrevieja this weekend to both collect sponsorship money and give out information. Sponsorship money goes towards the rent of stage, sound equipment, toilets etc so that the maximum profit from the event goes directly to the AECC and the cancer cause. Local clubs in winning form On the same night that Barcelona entered the record books with greatest comeback in Champions League history with their victory over PSG, local clubs were all in action throughout the province. by Keith Nicol It's now three wins out of three for CD Torrevieja as they beat second from bottom Muro CF 0:1, keeping their hopes alive of survival in the Tercera for next season. While Torrevieja are still Fourth from Bottom and in the relegation zone, they are now just three points away from CD Bunol whom they beat 2:0 last week, and have a game in hand. Things may be a little tougher on Sunday, as they take on fourth place UD Alzira, at home in the Nelson Mandela Stadium, with a 5pm kick-off. Torre have two home games in a row as they are also at home the following Sunday when they will hope to take all three points against bottom of the table CD Segorbe. Meanwhile, news from CD Montesinos is that they are coming into the final part of the season on patchy form. Last week they entertained a Sporting Orihuela side who were hammered the previous week against one of the top sides, (Benijofar) but who this week were unfortunate to leave “The Cauldron� at Montesinos with a defeat. However, it is always said that a side that does not play well but still wins is a good side, so with that logic in place, CD Montesinos took all three points

from a scrappy game in front of just over 200 loyal supporters. CD Montesinos travel away this weekend to play Callosa Deportiva C.F. Hospital Torrevieja receives donation in memory of patient A donation of 580€ was made to the Departmento de Nuemologia of Hospital Torrevieja on Tuesday 21st February in memory of the much loved and admired Richard Vivian Jones, who passed away in the Christmas week of 2016. by Tahnee Wright The sum was made up of monies collected at Viv’s funeral, a generous donation of 250€ from The Torrevieja Barbershop Harmonizers’ and a donation of 100€ from ‘The Deadwood Stage Company’. Viv, husband of Judith, died after some weeks in hospital suffering complicated breathing problems, namely Pulmonary Fibroses of the Lungs. Viv and Jude moved to the Costa Brava 14 years ago and are well known for their contribution in time and effort to many societies and charities. Viv had been stage manager and an ardent back stage worker for several years for ‘Campoverdy Teatro Groupo’ showing off an artistic flair and skill. In 2016 he transferred to the newly formed group ‘The Deadwood Stage Company’. Another of his interests, apart from supporting Wales in Rugby, was singing as a member of ‘The Torrevieja Barbershop Harmonizers’.

‘A week is a long time in politics’, muttered former Prime Minister Harold Wilson. If you think a week is a long time try a year. As soon as I turn my attention to pressing matters a new U.S President is elected. In 1978, American balladeer Kris Kristofferson penned the lyrics of his song, ‘Please Don’t Tell Me How the Story Ends.’ I wonder, did Chief Revolutionary George Soros, wannabe President Hillary Clinton and mainstream media sing the words of this plaintive melody on hearing of Trump’s triumph? An American pundit says he cannot win; “Before the elections I was called a racist bigot for criticising the President. I am now a racist bigot for supporting the President.” We are living in the Age of Hypocrisy so get used to it; stuff happens. But, let us not to be too quick to smirk. Things are more surrealistic in Goldman Sachs Occupied Europe (GSOE). Whilst we are pre-occupied by lurid press reports of an aggressive and expansionist Russia our minds are taken off the aggressive and expansionist Third World currently invading the European Union. EU industrialists and its agricultural sector pray for

an end to anti-Russian sanctions. Meanwhile, their smirking counterparts in Vladimir Putin’s Russia pray for the economic blockade being continued. As a consequence of the trade embargo Russia has become richer and more self-sufficient. Such is the arrogance of the EU’s un-elected political elite that Brussels cannot concede that their sanctions strategy has failed. In fact it has been such an epic fail I wouldn’t be surprised if EU Commissioners were in the pockets of Russia’s State Duma (Parliament).

Is there a solution? Such is the hubris of the EU’s two un-elected Presidents and its 22 Commissioners they will not capitulate. Instead, they will turn a blind eye whilst the fed-up EU nations furtively return to trading with Russia and get on with ring-fencing their indigenous ethnic communities. One day the penny will drop; the greatest threat to 508 million peoples of the splintering European Union comes not from Moscow but from Brussels and Washington DC.

Terrible roads I am moaning about the lack of infrastructure in Spain. The motorways/auto routes are superb as a lot of EU money has been given to Spain but locally our roads are terrible. The amount of tyres we go through because of holes in the road is ridiculous. There is no drainage so when it rains heavily places get flooded and roads are washed away. Areas that used to soak up the water have been built on due to pure greed. The councils just don’t seem to invest back into the community, instead the money collected from me in taxes is blown up – literally – by stunning firework displays that even Disney would be proud of. I am not complaining about the firework display though. They are amazing! Moraira

I am an expat living in Spain and have done for the last 15 years. I am starting to get fed up with the Spanish way of living and their supermarkets and shops. When I go back to the UK I notice sales or discounts. When I go shopping in Spain, despite a so-called recession I don’t see shops dropping the prices, I don’t see special offers, I don’t see much evidence of competition between retailers. In my local supermarket when food goes out of date they don’t slash the price, instead it stays on the shelf and so you have to be careful what you are buying. The amount of times I have brought meat from my local big named Spanish supermarket and got home only to realize once opened that the meat is smelling and has gone off. I then check the sell by date and it only has a day to go. Are they allowed to do this and how do we go about sorting this problem out? Sandy Denia

What I don’t understand in Spain is when I go into a shop and I am waiting in the queue while the assistant chats away to their friend or relative totally ignoring me and everyone else. The supermarket has a big long queue with customers waiting patiently to buy their weekly shop or just popped in to buy bread and there is one person on the counter while if you look around the supermarket there are four or five other people stacking shelves or doing something else. Why is that? It takes a good few moments for someone to realize after hearing a few moans and groans from bored and fed up customers for them to call someone else for help. Joan in Benitachell

As we shuffle to the front of the queue in God’s waiting room, we are lectured by the ‘experts’ that we should be taking extra steps to look after ourselves. More exercise, watching what we eat and keeping our alcohol intake down - preferably quitting the habit completely. There will be a pause here while I recover from my choking fit . . . While we struggle to put all this into practice, and fall miserably short most of the time, the theory is turned on its head when you look at Sir Michael Jagger and the gang. Now I don’t know for sure, but it doesn’t seem to me that any of them have bothered themselves much with artificial aids such as plastic surgery or hair transplants. Let’s be honest, Keith Richards has a face that resembles a satellite photograph of the Amazon delta. It’s a lived-in face that’s for sure, but by who or what is another question. And you know what? He couldn’t care less, and that’s why we love him. You don’t see paunches or flabby limbs on any of the boys either. Okay Micky boy still prances around the stage like a whippet on speed and there is less meat on his frame than on a vegetarian’s toothpick. But the others merely pass the time by twanging a few guitar strings or bashing the drums, and yet still have the figures that are not far removed from those they sported in those mind blowing 60’s days Remember, these guys have been rocking around the globe for half a century, have a combined age of 290 and if reports are correct, spent years smoking suspicious substances, knocking back whole distilleries whilst defying convention and simply laughing in the face of mortality. So I ask myself this: should I refuse that extra roast potato and another glass of Rioja in the dubious hope that I will live a little longer, or should I say to hell with it and take my chances with a smile on my face?

What do you know about your neighbours? by Victor Pemberton

‘Yes, that Mr Smith does seem very nice, doesn’t he? Handsome, oh yes. Athletic…mmmm. And that blond hair is to die for! Clearly loves gardening because he’s always out there toiling away amongst the cucumbers. The only thing is he does keep himself to himself, doesn’t he? And he keeps those hedges around his place very high, too high in my opinion. Seems a lovely man though.’ That, believe it or not is part of a conversation I overheard between two British expatriate women on a bus in Javea just a few months ago. It could not have occurred to them that the man they were talking about was one of the many dangerous British criminals who, over the last few years, have fled to Spain, and in particular to the Mediterranean Costas, hoping to escape the long arm of the British law. For a long time now the British media have conducted campaigns to help expatriates identify these fugitives on the run who are doing everything in their power to be one of us, respected members of a community who are about as far away from our values as Donald Trump is today. They are the bad boys of society who want to hide out amongst us, to be like us, dress like us in our Costa shorts, and talk like us be it with a Northern twang or a plum in the mouth. But they are nothing like us, not in any way at all. Amongst them are fraudsters, drug ring leaders, child pornographers, a thug who is accused of murdering a fellow drinker in a pub brawl, and a particularly unsavoury character who paralyzed a victim in a machete attack. Then at the last count a woman fraudster is amongst them. So what are we going to do to stop these fugitives from the law turning the coast we love so much into the ‘Costa del Crime’? How can we route them out? Well the first thing is to use our eyes. Observe. Don’t be nervous of being suspicious. Some of the greatest criminals in the world have been caught on a whim including that notorious Victorian murderer Dr. Crippen. Disguise. Some Costa fugitives opt for ways of making their appearance so different that they convince themselves that they could never be recognized when in a crowd or out shopping, a false moustache here, a wig, bizarre make-up. One female friend of mine told me that she was very impressed by how well groomed her new neighbour in the rented villa next door turned out to be, and how feminine she spoke. But her suspicions were alerted when the young woman turned around and walked away to reveal thick black hair on the back of her legs which appeared to be the only exposed part of her body that had not been shaved! However, when my friend called the Guardia to air her suspicions, the half-shaven neighbour had disappeared without trace. So remember, my friends, these thugs and murders are out there some where amongst us, and its up to us to get to them before they again escape the justice they deserve. But be warned. They’re cunning and dangerous. They’re also convinced of their invincibility, that they will always know best what to do in a tight situation. It’s up to us to prove how wrong they can be.

Another Trump tweet send stocks down again Pharma stocks down with new tweet on drug prices. President Donald Trump threw himself back into the debate over drug pricing on Tuesday, sending pharmaceutical stocks down again with a tweet promising to lower medicine costs in America.

In a tweet shortly before 9.00am New York time, Trump claimed he is working on a ‘new system where there will be competition in the drug industry’. Mylan NV, the maker of the EpiPen allergy shot that was at the center of the public outrage over drug prices last year, declined 1.5 percent, while Perrigo Co. dropped 2.5 percent and Allergan Plc fell 1.5 percent. Trump tweeted the morning after House Republicans unveiled their much anticipated legislation to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act late Monday, which he also lauded on Tuesday, adding that competition will come later in the health-care rollout. ‘We are intrigued by the timing of President Trump’s tweet this morning as it followed rapidly behind the House healthcare reform bill and we believe shows the administration’s continued focus on drug pricing’ said Vamil Divan, an analyst at Credit Suisse AG, in a note to clients. The 25-member Standard & Poor’s 500 Pharmaceuticals, Biotechnology & Life Sciences Index dropped as much as 1.3 percent, the most since 11th January,

when Trump said the pharmaceutical industry is ‘getting away with murder’. The president has promised to lower drug costs several times and threatened to use the government’s buying power to force prices down, but so far has not unveiled any specifics about how he plans to do so. The Tuesday tweet left analysts struggling to figure out what the president meant, especially as Trump has alluded to bidding in the past. Unlike most countries in the world, the U.S. doesn’t directly regulate

medicine prices, and drugmakers have strongly resisted it. Drugmakers are under maximum pressure to come up with ways to reduce prices amid outcry from members of Congress and U.S. customers. Some companies, including Allergan and Swiss giant Novartis AG, have responded with voluntary actions to cap price increases whilst Johnson & Johnson and Merck & Co. have taken measures to increase transparency about their prices.

U.S. buyout fund to purchase Madrid-based Allfunds Bank SA

U.S. buyout fund Hellman & Friedman is nearing a deal to buy Madrid-based mutual fund platform Allfunds Bank SA, after beating bids from rival private equity bidders, Bloomberg reported, citing representatives involved with the matter. The deal, valuing Allfunds Bank at about 1.8 billion € ($1.90 billion), could be announced as soon as this week, Bloomberg reported on Monday. Established in 2000 to provide access to so-called open architecture investment funds market, Allfunds has more than 200billion€ of assets under management. Allfunds Bank is owned 50% by Santander Asset Management and 50% by Intesa Sanpaolo Spa. Hellman & Friedman are rumored to have beaten a last-minute counterbid from private equity firm Permira. Chinese investment firm Legend Holdings Corp and three groups of private equity funds were putting the finishing touches to rival bids for Allfunds Bank, Reuters reported in February.

Is there a law in Spain that allows me to see them? I am sorry to hear about your predicament, however you will be pleased to know that there is a law in Spain that allows you the freedom to see your grandchildren. Basically in Spain you have the legal right to see your grandchildren. This right is stated in the Spanish Civil Code and it applies to grandparents, siblings, and other relatives of minors. In cases where parents or guardians do not allow grandparents to see their grandchildren, the grandparents have

the right to request visitation rights through the Spanish Courts. What is the procedure, how do I go about getting these visitation rights? You must file a petition with the District Spanish Court stating the reasons that you cannot see your grandchildren. You will need a Spanish lawyer, a court runner, and a translator if you do not speak Spanish. What happens next? The Judge will consider the testimony of all parties involved including the mother, father, grandparents and any other appropriate witnesses, all of them cross-examined at the day of the hearing.

Are the grandparents always given visitation rights? Normally yes. This is a family bond which is proven to be beneficial to grandparents and grandchildren, and the Judge always seeks what is best for a child´s interest. The type of visits will depend on the age of the child and where grandparents reside in Spain. Help Ricky Valance raise a million for the RAF When he was 17, Costa Blanca’s very own Ricky Valance signed up with the RAF, which he says was one of the proudest moments of his life.

Last month he released his version of the Peters and Lee classic ‘Welcome Home’ with his target being to raise one million pounds for their charitable causes. Why one million? Because Ricky’s 1960 Number 1 hit version of ‘Tell Laura I Love Her’ sold at least that number of singles at the time, and so it’s appropriate that his goal is to raise £1.00 for every record or download sold. Two RAF charities are to benefit, the RAF Association, which provides welfare support to the RAF family, from the youngest recruit to the oldest veteran and The Royal Air Force Museum in North West London, which will be celebrating 100 Years of the RAF in 2018. Ricky Valance was born on the 10th April 1936. He is best known for the Number One single ‘Tell Laura I love Her’, which sold over a million copies in 1960. He started his musical career after leaving the Royal Air Force. Further singles included ‘Movin’ Away’, ‘Jimmy’s Girl’ and ‘Six Boys’. ‘Jimmy’s Girl’ sold over 100,000 records and ‘Moving Away’ made it to number one in Australia and Scandinavia. ‘Tell Laura’ is the tragic story of a boy called Tommy and his love for a girl called Laura. It’s a sad rock ballad which has immortalised Ricky in the music history books. Ricky will be supporting his campaign with radio, press and TV interviews, sharing the story of his active service overseas for the RAF in the 1950’s and his 55 years in the music industry together with details of his new record and video which was filmed at RAF Hendon. He also has plans to bring his ‘An Evening With’ show back to the Costa Blanca sometime soon.

Death of Vernon Nesbeth

By Keith Nicol The entertainment world lost another beloved son on Tuesday with the sudden passing of Vernon Nesbeth early on Tuesday morning. Vernon and wife Wendy Nesbeth decided it was time to go into semi-retirement and so they sold up and moved to Torrevieja, where they settled in the Torreta area of the city on January 4th, 2004. You could regularly find them having breakfast or a drink in one of the local cafes however, most people they came into contact with had little or no idea of the couple’s long standing background in the British Entertainment scene during the late 1950s and 60s. Always known for the huge smile on his face, he continued to work out on a daily basis, held a 1st degree black belt in martial arts and as an actor, was best known for Black Joy (1977), Wolcott (1981) and Happy Families (1985). His wife Wendy is a former professional dancer and although she resisted Vernon’s first attempts to chat her up, they became a couple, then went their separate professional ways, and then finally got back together again and married 45 years ago. A founder member of the Southlanders, who were the longest running male vocal group in British pop music history.they were one of the very first Doo-Wop groups in the UK and while their biggest commercial hit was 1958’s cover version of “Alone”, which sold over one million copies; the song they are most identified with is “I am a Mole and I Live in a Hole” from 1958. The unforgettable title line from the song was spoken by the group’s bass voice Harry Wilmot, father of comedian Gary Wilmot, however the song failed to make the UK Singles Chart. They became one of the UK’s most successful cabaret acts, touring all over the world in hotels, theatres, on cruise ships (including the QE2), stadiums, plus Vernon performed in television, film and varied cabaret rooms for almost 60 years, including a short stint in the Black Mikado in 1975.

Hotel La Resistance

Shoestring Productions brings you HOTEL LA RESISTANCE which is a farcical comedy that has been created and written by local resident James Dale-Grey. It is late summer 1944 in the foothills of the Pyrenees in France and the hotel/bar is situated in a small market town 40km from the Spanish border and is a popular meeting place for the Germans and the French. Jim is acting as both Producer and Director of the play which will be performed in a theatre/supper environment at the Bar/ Restaurant Mont Martre which can be located on Mojacar Playa. Jim is nearly 82 and full of energy and enthusiasm. He retired to Mojacar with his wife Annabelle, now of 56 years standing almost 14 years ago. They were drawn here by an advertisement in a Sunday Supplement that they happened to be reading on a cold, wet British November day and have never looked back. Jim comes from a family of Drapers but decided that it was not for him and so branched out into printing, eventually owning his own company and employing more than 20 people. A self-made man, originally from Yorkshire, Jim encompasses everything that is the quintessential English man from a bygone era. Jim’s interest in the theatre was ignited when his then 11 year old son came home to announce that he wanted to be an actor. Jim and Annabelle did all they could to support him and with obvious success as their son, now aged 52, is a Professor of Music and Drama and lives and works in Singapore. Annabelle also took part in many productions in the UK, even appearing with her own mother. Sitting in the Mont Marte bar one evening chatting to French husband and wife team, Mehdi and Michele, who have run the restaurant for some three years, a germ of an idea was planted, suggested by the colourful characters that frequent the bar. Mehdi has a wonderful sense of humour and encouraged Jim in his endeavours. And so Jim set about writing his Hotel La Resistance play. It pays homage to the highly successful “Allo Allo” series at a time when the leading light Gordon Kaye recently passed away. His aim is to spread happiness and laughter and if the rehearsals are anything to go by he is succeeding. He hopes that the audience will join in the fun. Any profit will be donated to PAWSPATAS charity. Ticket price will include food and refreshment and are available from PC Playa in Mojacar, Connextions in Turre and the Mont Marte Restaurant. Have you heard about Lupus?

Largely unheard of disease affects 40,000 in Spain alone. Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease and can be potentially fatal. Its origin is unknown but it is characterised by a multitude of symptoms, manifesting differently over the life of the patient. Any part of the body can be affected by lupus as it has an array of clinical manifestations affecting the skin, joints, brain, lungs, kidneys, blood vessels and other internal organs. Epidemiological studies suggest that 1 in 2,000 people have some form or another of systemic lupus. It is estimated that around 40,000 people in Spain suffer from lupus. More than 90% of lupus sufferers are women and

it is most common between the ages of 15 to 45. Lupus causes the body's immune system becomes hyperactive and attacks normal, healthy tissue. This results in symptoms such as inflammation, swelling, and damage to joints, skin, kidneys, blood, the heart, and lungs. Under normal function, the immune system makes proteins called antibodies in order to protect and fight against antigens such as viruses and bacteria. Lupus results from both genetic and environmental stimuli. Risk factors include exposure to sunlight, certain

prescription medications, infection with Epstein-Barr virus, and exposure to certain chemicals. Environmental factors include extreme stress, exposure to ultraviolet light, smoking, some medications and antibiotics, infections and the Epstein-Barr virus (in children). Although there is no cure, lupus and its symptoms can be controlled with medication. Treatments for Lupus include corticosteroids, immunosuppressive drugs and lifestyle changes. Can healthy eating be harmful? Condition has detrimental mental and physical effects.

Carb-cutting, protein packing diets are everywhere to be seen nowadays – promoted on television, social media and in shops. It is not surprising that a rising number of people are becoming obsessed with counting calories and developing a condition called orthorexia. Orthorexia nervosa is a term derived from the Greek word for ‘correct’ which sees sufferers, particularly women in their 30s, fixate on ‘health foods’, abiding by strict rules as they eliminate less healthy options from their diets such as sweets and carbohydrates. Experts have warned orthorexia can lead to severe weight loss, malnutrition and depression, impacting the sufferer mentally as well as physically as they become profoundly obsessed with what they are eating. The disorder was named by Dr Steven Bratman in a 1997 paper in which he said sufferers could be driven to despair by unintentionally ‘devouring a single raisin’. Orthorexia, unlike bulimia and anorexia, is not currently included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders which doctors use to diagnose mental illness in the US, nor is it included in the World Health Organisation’s International Classification of Disease, the list of recognised conditions used in other countries, including the UK and Australia.

Make your own hanging ‘kokedama’ The Japanese horticultural fashion taking Spain by storm. A kokedama is a style of Japanese bonsai, where a plant’s root system is simply wrapped in moss and bound with string, transforming it into a sculptural art form. Loosely translated, ‘koke’ means moss and ‘dama’ means ball. Becoming increasingly popular in Spain, they are perfect for exteriors and look great hung on balconies and terraces, but they can also be kept in perfect condition inside the house. Follow this step-by-step guide to make your own: The materials you will need are: a small plant of your choice, some moss, clay, string or rope and a special substrate for bonsais (akedama). To successfully make your own plant you will need to: 1. Make a compact substrate ball by mixing ¾ of moss and ¼ akadama. Add some river sand to make it stick better if required. 2. Make a small hole in the ball and insert the roots of your plant. 3. Reinforce it by tying any rope or string of your choice around the ball and start making knots around it. 4. Cut small bits of moss and put them around the ball, holding them in place with the string. The kokedama is easily kept alive by watering it a little when you see the moss getting dry. Avoid exposing it to too much sunlight or strong currents of air.

DIY first aid for damaged door frames Door frames are easily damaged. Moving furniture, pets, slamming doors or simply the pass of time can easily cause annoying splits, chips and cracks. Whilst it is possible to get your doorframes looking as good as new again, they must be first examined to ascertain whether the damage is superficial or goes deeper. If superficial, great news! Frames can be sanded down, cleaned and repainted or varnished. If required, a small amount of wood putty can be used to fill in gouges before sanding down and painting. Putty comes in the form of a soft, malleable greyish-yellow paste and is made from ground chalk and raw linseed oil. It hardens after a few hours and is essential if deeper gouges or cracks are found. First of all surround the area with protective tape. Then apply the putty, angling the spatula at 45 degrees and press the putty into the crack or gash. Once the product has filled the gap to surface level, soak your fingers in water or hand cream (check product labels first for advice) before using them to press into the gap. Once finished, remove the protective tape and leave to dry for 24 to 48 hours. Once the area is completely dry, sand gently before painting. If damage appears to be more serious and the frame needs changing, contact a carpenter.

I know that face! China is leading the way in facial recognition software. Baidu, which runs China’s most popular search engine claims a 99% accuracy rate that now allows for “Face Payments”. Forget flashing your credit card, just smile at the camera and you can purchase rail tickets, enter apartment and office buildings, even grab your favourite Capuchino in participating venues! Another company Face++ is already integrated into various apps. Alipay, is used by 120,000.000 people in China and now accepts facial payment. Didi, a Uber taxi type company uses the system to verify the driver is a legitimate employee. Wether this technology transfers well to European cultures is a different matter as privacy is taken more seriously here, and the idea of our mugshots being stored in giant databases that could possibly be accessed by government or hackers, may not be as appealing as the benefits offered by facial recognition. The series “Person of Interest” is based on an all seeing, facial recognition super computer hooked up to all CCTV systems. Do we really want to be tracked like this? Time will tell in our ever growing gadget based society.

Take a hike!

A team of engineers from Agility Robotics, an offshoot of the Oregon State University engineering program, built a cool two-legged robot that can walk by itself. The robot, nicknamed Cassie, could someday be used in dangerous search-and-rescue missions or package delivery. Cassie is the successor to the team’s previous robot, ATRIAS. ATRIAS was developed about two years ago as a DARPA-funded project meant to make walking robots more efficient. ATRIAS could walk at a little over 3 mph and could move forward and backward, as well as uphill and downhill. The robot could balance itself and remain upright when pushed. However, the design was somewhat clunky. The robot could only stand upright by shifting its weight from foot to foot, for instance. To fix these problems, the team developed Cassie, which is a smaller but more efficient version. Cassie features additional motors to enable standing in place and crouching, as well as a more efficient design. The end result is a robot that’s about half the size as ATRIAS but much more powerful. The robot can stand and walk on uneven terrain, fall down without breaking, and is water resistant. The company hopes their design will be used in search-and-rescue operations where sending a human is too dangerous, and in package delivery. The company envisions a fleet of autonomous vehicles to drive the mail to your address and a walking robot to bring that mail to your doorstep. Source: Oregon State University

Gustavo Rodríguez and Mavi García win the Orihuela Duathlon Last Sunday in Orihuela, the “Vientos del Pueblo”, a medium distance duathlon took place. It was the second Spanish championship event of the Spanish Triathlon Federation of 2017, and it was the fourth time event was organized in Orihuela. The contest consisted of a 15 kilometre run, followed by 65 kilometers on a bicycle, and ending with another 8 kilometres run to the finish. The contestant set out at 9am on a beautiful spring Sunday morning. The race that takes endurance and perseverance was won by Gustavo Rodriguez who completed the route with a time of 2:59:32, and impressive five minutes before the runner-ups Víctor del Corral and Rubén Peñuela. The women’s competition was dominated by Mavi Garcia from start to finish. After leading the first and second stage by a wide margin, she was able to maintain a steady pace to the finish. Only 18 men reached the finishing line ahead of her. With Sunday’s victories Gustavo and

Mavi repeated last year’s triumph. They led a competition that was overall a great success, with 550 participants competing in the men’s, women’s, para-athletes and senior categories.
