THE olive harvesting campaign is kicking off this week in the province of Alicante, and there’s a wave of optimism in the air. This optimism couldn’t have come at a better time, given the ongoing crisis stemming from the shortage of olive oil. According to forecasts from the Ministry of Agriculture, we can expect a robust increase of up to 16 per cent in the olive harvest during the current 2023/24 season. This means that Alicante is on track to produce an im­ pressive 6,800 tons of olives, a significant boost that holds the promise of securing the province’s oil supply and poten­ tially curbing the relentless surge in prices. For the hard­working farmers, this bountiful harvest is not only a welcome relief, but also a crucial lifeline. It ensures a steady flow of high­quality oil within the province while lending a hand in stabilising those soaring prices that have been a cause for concern. HISTORIC MILESTONE OLIVE OPTIMISM

BEST SEPTEMBER: Alicante-Elche Airport welcomed a staggering 1,562,661 travellers during last month.

ALICANTE­ELCHE Miguel Hernandez Airport is cele­ brating a historic mile­ stone, as it recently marked its best Septem­ ber to date, welcoming a staggering total of 1,562,661 travellers. The previous record, es­ tablished in September 2019 with 1,552,541 pas­ sengers, has now been surpassed. This remarkable achievement translates to a significant 15.1 per cent increase compared to September 2022. Out of this impressive

number of travellers, a majority, precisely 1,561,151, were commer­ cial passengers. Among them, 1,351,392 individuals embarked on international flights, re­ flecting a substantial 16.9 per cent increase com­ pared to September 2022. An additional 209,759 passengers chose domes­ tic flights, showcasing a noteworthy 4.7 per cent growth from the previous year. Breaking down the in­ ternational traffic by na­ tionality, the leading con­

tributors to the Septem­ ber 2023 passenger count were the United Kingdom, with 557,043 travellers, followed by the Nether­ lands with 103,186, Ger­ many with 99,539, Bel­ gium with 77,986, and Norway with 71,621. In terms of operations, Alicante­Elche Miguel Hernandez Airport man­ aged a total of 9,625 flights in September, marking a robust 10.9 per cent increase compared to the flight movements of the same period in 2022.

When considering the data accumulated for the first nine months of the year, Alicante­Elche Miguel Hernandez Airport witnessed a remarkable 19.3 per cent surge in pas­ sengers. The airport served a to­ tal of 12,050,349 passen­ gers from January to September, showcasing its enduring growth. Additionally, the num­ ber of flights handled dur­ ing these months amount­ ed to 76,506, representing an 11.2 per cent increase over the previous year.
