MURCIA GRIEVES

Catherine McGeer IN a sombre gathering, the Plaza de San Juan de Cruz in Caravaca de la Cruz became a place of profound sorrow as hundreds of people gathered to ob serve a minute of silence. The purpose was to pay homage to the memory of four beloved residents of Caravaca: Jorge Enrique Batioja Olivero, Rosa María Rosero Sánchez, Leidy Paola Correa, and Kevin Alejandro Gómez. These individuals tragically lost their lives in the devastating fire that oc curred in the nightclubs of Las Atalayas in Murcia on Sunday, October 1. The community came together in unity, providing unwavering support to the grieving relatives and friends of the victims, conveying their love and soli darity during this unimaginably chal lenging time. On Friday afternoon Oc tober 6, the Parish of El Salvador of Caravaca de la Cruz hosted a funeral mass to bid a final farewell to these four cherished members of their com munity. The investigation into the fire’s ori gin is ongoing, with preliminary find ings pointing to the Teatre nightclub as the source. Expert reports and witness videos suggest that the fire may have ACCORDING to the folks over at the Statistics Ser vice of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), the number of couples calling it quits with their better halves marital dissolu tions, annulments, separa tions, and divorces has dropped by a cool 12.3 per cent during the second quarter of this year com pared to 2022 in the Re gion of Murcia. But there must be some kind of Mur cian magic at work as the rest of Spain didn’t see quite the same dip. Breaking it down further, there were 8 per cent few er ‘mutual agreement’ di vorces, just 396 cases, and a whopping 19 per cent drop in the ‘contentious’ ones, 295 cases, between April and June. been linked to a pyrotechnic show dur ing the party. However, the exact cause and sequence of events leading to the tragedy are still under scrutiny. In the wake of the tragedy, the after math continues to impact Murcia’s nightlife. With the solemn memory of the 13 lives lost still fresh in everyone’s minds, Murcia City Council has taken decisive action. Three new nightlife venues Maná, BBT20, and District 13 have been sealed off by Local Police of

ficers. This stern measure comes as a result of having closure orders in force, bringing the total number of sealed es tablishments to seven. The owner of Teatre de Murcia now faces potential legal consequences, with the possibility of a sixyear prison sentence for fraud and falsifying docu ments. Murcia, a city united in grief, is reso lute in its pursuit of justice and the pre vention of such tragedies in the future.

Murcia, more sunshine and less heartache!

AT the beginning of October the Spanish Association against Cancer (AECC) re sumed its ‘On the March against Cancer’ activity in the town of San Pedro del Pinatar. This inspiring initia tive, now in its second year, is coordinated by the local AECC board and has become a beloved weekly event for the community. Every Tuesday morning, at 9.15am, a dedicated group of neighbours gathers at the Lo Pagán esplanade to begin a healthy journey. Their des tination? The stunning sur roundings of the Mar Menor, where they partake in invigorating physical exer

cise along the scenic Lo Pagán and La Mota prome nade. Its primary goal is to champion and instill healthy lifestyle habits within the community, thereby reduc ing the risk of diseases and enhancing the overall quality of life for all. This inclusive activity, open to everyone, runs from Octo ber to June and is entirely free of charge. Those inter ested can register by contact ing the AECC on 900 100 036. So, lace up your sneakers and join the residents of San Pedro del Pinatar as they take a step towards a health ier, cancerfree future every Tuesday morning.
