Anna Ellis THE arrival of October signalled the end of Nerja’s beach surveillance sea son. During this season, Nerja’s dedicated team of lifeguards and Civil Protection personnel kept a watchful eye, ensur ing the safety of beachgoers. What stands as a testament to their professionalism and expertise is the fact that they were involved in just one complicated rescue. In addition, they handled seven sim pler rescues, demonstrating their readiness and commitment to safe guarding our beach visitors. While the lifeguards were on duty, we were fortunate to see the green flag, indicating safe swimming condi tions, proudly flying for a significant 86 per cent of their watchful hours. The yellow flag, a symbol of caution, was raised 11 per cent of the time, while the red flag, representing haz ardous conditions, made an appear ance for 3 per cent of the time. In addition to their lifesaving ef

forts, the lifeguards offered various types of assistance. They often helped individuals who felt dizzy without losing consciousness. They recorded 36 cases in Burriana, 10 in Maro, three in Torrecilla, one in Chu cho Playazo, and nine on other beaches. There were also instances where people required assistance due to trau

ma, dislocation, injuries, or loss of con sciousness. Furthermore, the lifeguards extend ed their support to a total of 119 peo ple by providing access to the amphibi ous chair. This invaluable service allowed 78 individuals in Burriana and 41 in Torrecilla to enjoy the beach safe ly and comfortably.
