HISTORIC FESTIVAL

Catherine McGeer EVERY year, the streets of Cartagena come alive with the history, tradition, and spectacle as the Carthaginians and Ro mans celebrate their annual festivals. On Saturday, September 23, the climax of these festivities was reached with the reenactment of the famous battle and the grand parade through the streets of Cartagena that brought together thou sands of spectators. Civil, military, and mercenary groups, numbering over 5,000 participants, marched to the rhythmic beat of drums, showcasing a rich variety of costumes and performances that delighted the crowd. Fireeaters and other entertainers added an extra layer of excitement to the festivities. Despite the threat of rain that often looms over Cartagena in the autumn, the weather remained pleasant, allowing the festivities to shine even brighter. There were some beautiful standout moments included in the festivities such as Sergio's proposal to María José from the Ara Pacis legion, which she joyfully accepted. As the parade neared its end, Aníbal and Himilce, played by Julio Guillamón and Esther Escolar, graced the procession, marking another pivotal moment in the

enue. This memorable weekend of cele bration concluded with a quieter Sunday, featuring naval modelling exhibitions, cul tural battles, open camps, fairs, and vin tage markets. As the troops and legions closed their camps after midnight, another year of Cartagena’s historic festivals came to a close. This annual event continues to cap tivate hearts and minds, preserving the rich heritage of the Carthaginians and Ro mans for generations to come.

IN San Javier a remarkable initiative has taken root, re minding society that the fight against gender violence should never fade. The ‘All 25 are 25N’ event, held on the 25th of each month, gathers community mem bers at the ‘Ana Orantes’ Equality roundabout to com memorate the victims of gender violence. Led by Mayor José Miguel Luengo and councillor for So cial Rights María del Mar Pérez, the initiative aims to keep the issue of gender vio lence at the forefront of pub lic consciousness throughout the year. Mayor Luengo em phasised the importance of dedicating space to equality and the fight against gender violence. Councillor Pérez, in her first participation, stressed the need to remember vic

The public was treated to over two and a half hours of a varied and eye catching parade, with the Libyan Hoplite Lancers and the legionnaires of the Ex traordinary Shock Forces delivering a thrilling finale. All in all the spectators were wowed by the intricate and realistic details that brought this festival alive. THE ‘Hipocampo 503’ Scout Group is taking on an exciting new series of activities, kicking off with a favourite annual event the cleanup of hardto reach areas within the mud flats of the Salinas de San Pedro del Pinatar. This ecoconscious ini tiative is organised by Pinatar Natura as part of the LIBERA Project. Joined by the mayor, Ángela Gaona, and Youth councillor, Valentín Henarejos, Hipocampo 503 marked the begin ning of the 202324 ‘So

lar Round’. Among the litter collected, they re trieved a variety of waste, including cans, wipes, cigarette butts, and various discarded objects. Notably, they re cycled plastic bottles re purposed as mud con tainers, left behind after treatment. This project showcases a commitment to envi ronmental preservation and community engage ment, reminding us all of the importance of look ing after our beautiful natural spaces.
