Catherine McGeer THE second ‘Town of the Year’ Awards recently took place in the Region of Murcia, shedding light on the issues of depopulation, inadequate infrastruc ture, and the challenges faced by rural areas. Organised by Prensa Ibérica in collaboration with La Opinión, these awards aimed to acknowledge and honour the efforts made by town coun cils, companies, and associations in the region to drive progress in their munici palities. The ceremony took place at the pres tigious Archaeological Museum of Mur cia, where winners were announced based on the votes cast by the readers of the newspaper. The towns of San Javier, Ricote, and Pliego emerged as the victors in their respective cate gories. San Javier was crowned the ‘Town of the Year’ in the culture category, with Mayor José Miguel Luengo accepting the award presented by Juan Ramón Gil, the General Director of Content for

Speeding boat AN investigation is underway to determine if speeding was the cause behind a boat crashing into the promenade of La Mota de Lo Pagán. The incident occurred on Thurs day night when a boat collid ed with the strip of land that separates the Mar Menor from the salt lakes in the Nat ural Park of the Salinas de San Pedro del Pinatar. Emergency medical ser vices promptly responded to
the scene, attending to a seri ously injured man and sever al other crew members who sustained minor injuries. The Guardia Civil is currently ex amining whether excessive speed or other factors con tributed to the accident. Local Police, the Guardia Civil, an ambulance from 061, and Civil Protection per sonnel were present. The in jured individuals were trans ported to Los Arcos Hospital.

Prensa Ibérica. Pliego was recognised as the ‘Best Sustainable Town of the Year’, and the accolade was presented to Councillor Antonio Huéscar by José Masegosa, the Communications Direc tor of the Hozono Global Group.
Finally, the title of ‘Best Tourist Town of the Year’ went to Ricote, and Mayor Rafael Guillamón received the award from Marcos Ortuño, the acting council lor for the Presidency, Tourism, Culture, and Sports of the Community.
