AXARQUIA’S towns came alive on Fri day, June 23, as they welcomed the summer season with vibrant celebra tions to mark the festival of San Juan. Among the highlights, Nerja’s Burri ana Beach emerged as an epicentre for celebrations in the town. The beach drew in throngs of local residents and visitors eager to embrace one of the year’s longest nights and welcome the sunsoaked months ahead. The cele brations began with an electrifying performance by the famous group Los Gambones del Castillo, igniting the at mosphere before a performance by Proyecto Mandarina. At the stroke of midnight, organisers lit the grand bon fire which burned a captivating ‘júa’ ef figy representing traditional beach foods like sizzling sardines and paella. The night sky lit up with stunning fireworks, adding a touch of magic to the celebration. In keeping with tradi tion, many wrote wishes on paper and tossed them into the crackling flames, ONE Axarquia town is preparing to celebrate a unique annual tradition this weekend. Macharaviaya will celebrate the traditional American holiday of the fourth of July with a focus on Texas this year. The event, which honours Bernardo de Gálvez, a Spanish military officer and hero of the American Revolution, will take place on Saturday, July 1 in the town starting at 8.30pm. The mayor of Macharavi aya, Antonio Campos, along with other local officials, launched the event last week, revealing the exciting plans for this year’s celebration. sending their desires out into the uni verse. Meanwhile, in neighbouring Torrox, the enchantment continued as more than 500 revellers gathered at El Pon til. Torches illuminated the path to Tor rox’s river, where people soaked their heads according to local customs. After, more than 700 delicious San Juan doughnuts were handed out to festivalgoers.
Torre del Mar, known as the musical hub of Axarquia during San Juan, once again lived up to its reputation. The streets came alive with laughter, mu sic, and the aroma of delicious food. Another highlight was the ‘júas’ con test, with the Peña el Antifaz emerging as the winners. Their creation met its fiery fate, before a magnificent fire works display that painted the night sky.

providing covert assistance and later getting directly in volved in the conflict. The town’s historical charm and wellpreserved architec ture provide a picturesque backdrop for Saturday’s event. Visitors will have the opportunity to travel back in time as they enjoy an exciting historical reenactment, trans porting them to the 18th cen tury. The celebrations will in clude live music, a parade, and the ceremonial raising of flags, with the national anthems of Spain, the United States, and Texas playing loudly. A histori cal reenactment of the arrival of Bernardo de Gálvez in New Orleans will follow before a spectacular fireworks display.

CANILLAS DE ACEITUNO will celebrate its traditional Andalucian heritage with a flamenco singing contest this summer. Organisers from the town hall launched the sixth ‘Antonio de Canillas’ Flamenco Singing Contest on Monday, June 26. This competition aims to cele brate and nurture the spirit of flamenco within the town. The contest pays homage to the acclaimed cantaor, Antonio Jiménez González, affectionately known as ‘Antonio de Canillas’, who put the spotlight on Canillas de Aceituno. All are welcome to enter, but must register before Wednesday, July 5. The qualifying rounds, open to
the public for free, will take place from Friday, July 15. During the launch cere mony, authorities an nounced that this year’s grand finale will take place on Thursday, August 10 during the town’s annual Flamenco Night. In addition to being recognised for their flamenco vocals, the deserving winner will also receive a prize of €2,000.
