Snake encounter THE Local Police recently encountered an interest ing visitor in the district of Casillas in Murcia. A sizable snake, identi fied as a Montpellier snake, had made its way into a house, sparking a mild commotion. Howev er, there was no cause for alarm, as this particular species is not dangerous to humans. With a poten tial length of up to two

metres, the snake cer tainly commanded atten tion. The Ecological Patrol swiftly intervened, cap turing the reptile and en suring its safe transfer to the Wildlife Recovery Centre El Valle. Such encounters are not unheard of in the re gion, as the same team had encountered a horse shoe whip snake in a nursery just last May!

vealed that out of the 39,590 individuals over 65 years old in the municipality, 23 per cent live alone, amounting to 9,077 individuals. To combat loneli ness and enhance the wellbe ing of the elderly, the Cartage na City Council introduced the Cartagena Friendly City Plan for the Elderly. As part of this initiative, various programmes have been implemented, such

as active ageing workshops, which have already engaged over 2,000 senior citizens in the past year. During the spirited march, participants proudly carried banners bearing messages such as ‘We are not invisible’ and ‘Ask me before deciding for me’. These expressions emphasised the desire for au tonomy and dignity in old

age. This initiative serves as a reminder of the prevalence of elder abuse and aims to pro mote a positive perception of the elderly within society. By walking together under the slogan ‘Walking towards the good treatment of the elder ly’, the march sought to raise public awareness and ensure that seniors receive the re spect and care they deserve.
