Dry islands

THE Balearic Islands is the Spanish region with the lowest rate of alcohol consumption by resi dents. According to the latest edition of the ‘Survey on alcohol and other drugs in Spain’ (Edades), just un der 55 per cent of the Balearic population drink alcohol at least once a month. The figure is 10 per centage points lower than the national average. On the other end of the scale, the Valencian Com munity has the highest consumption percentage with 73.3 per cent of peo ple questioned admitting to drinking alcohol at least once a month. Analysts reveal that all indicators of alcohol con sumption have dropped in the Balearic Islands over the last decade the only Spanish region where this has occurred. Among the reasons for the downward trend is the creation of the Plat form for Quality Leisure, the only entity of its kind in the country to unite as sociations and institu tions across the board to encourage healthier leisure activities.

ENSAIMADAS: You can have your cake... and eat it!

A CONTROVERSIAL issue was settled on Tuesday June 6 when representatives from Ryanair met with Mallorca’s Minister of Tourism and de cided that you can have your cake. . . and eat it! On June 6, representatives from Irish airline Ryanair met Iago Negueruela, the acting councillor for Economic Model, Tourism and Employ ment in Mallorca, according to a news source. Some weeks ago there was a bit of a do regarding a passenger who was allegedly charged for taking ensaimadas on a Ryanair flight, thankfully the matter now seems to be set tled. For those not in the know, the ensaimada is a pastry made in Mallorca, its origins date back hundreds of years. Another product, popular in

Mallorca and Ibiza is called greixonera, and incorporates leftover pieces of ensaimada. However, the issue was ironed out and the official line is that Ryanair does not charge people for taking the pastry on their planes. In fact, it emerged that the air line has never charged ‘for the transport of ensaimadas on their planes’. It seems that the misunderstanding arose when the passenger in question was charged for carrying an unchecked suit case.

The meeting was also at tended by representatives of the Association of Bakers and Confectioners of the Balearic Islands. Negueruela confirmed that they will con tinue working to defend local products and that travellers can continue to carry en saimadas. The minister also praised Ryanair’s willingness to ‘col laborate with the govern ment and that after this meeting it has been possible to clarify the situation, with out upsetting anyone’.
