SPAIN’S government has finally an nounced that UK licence holders in the country will be able to exchange their driv ing licence for a Spanish one without tak ing an exam from Thursday, March 16. The period to allow Brits already living in Spain to do this will be six months. Anyone moving to the country after March 16 will also be given six months. Announced by the Council of Minis ters on Tuesday, March 14, the news puts an end to travel misery for thou sands of expats left in limbo after the Spanish government abruptly brought extensions allowing anyone who hadn’t exchanged their licence before Decem ber 31, 2020 to continue using their UK licence to an end last May. Brits will now be able to ‘canjear’ (ex change) their UK licence with the DGT for a Spanish one. Existing category per missions (for example, ability to drive heavy goods vehicles or motorbikes) will

also be honoured. Spanish living in the UK will similarly be able to exchange their licences under the agreement. The government’s statement said: “The Council of Ministers has approved this Tuesday the agreement by which Spain and the United Kingdom will offer reciprocal recognition and exchange of driving licences as well as the exchange of information on traffic offences.” The news means existing traffic of

They will first need to check they have their relevant paperwork in order, in cluding proof of residency, and take a short ‘psychophysical’ test. This in cludes basic health tests (including eye sight, blood pressure) a psychological test and a mobility test.

Easter week tourism tTHE Costa Blanca tourism sector is expected to achieve more than 90 per cent occupation during Easter week, with 60 per cent of beds in Benidorm already sold by March 7. The prospects for good weather in Spain and the recent freezing temperatures in other parts of Europe encourage hol idaymakers to take the plunge and book a break in Spain. As far as the influx of domestic tourism is concerned, Easter week will be in April so holiday resorts will be at their busiest from April 6 to 9. In the meantime, Gandia broke all records for tourist apart ment and hotel occupation in 2022. The average occupation was above 70 per cent over 10 months, and the town expects the best summer of all time in 2023.
