RESTORED GLORY Betty Henderson THE onceuncertain fate of Mallorca’s almost centuryold Hotel Formentor, looks set to be resolved as construction work advances on site. Legal battles over the man agement of the premises had led to a development stale mate, while the condition of the building continued to de teriorate. More recently, the project was dealt another blow as developers were fined over poor waste man agement. But speaking to local press this week, former mayor of Pollença and current minister for Planning, Tomeu Cifre em phasised developers’ commit ment to a ‘faithful’ reconstruc tion of the hotel. Cifre stated that the project aimed to ‘cap ture the essence’ of the origi nal hotel. Previous buildings had to be demolished due to health and safety concerns and struc tural damage. Now construc

tion work is underway to cre ate a replica of the original of fering the same number of rooms, 249. Developers have their work cut out in the reconstruction project. The historic hotel dates back to 1929, born out of Argentinian resident, Adan Diehl’s frustration at the 1929
economic crisis. The resort is set against an exuberant for est and UNESCO World Her itage site, with stunning sea views. The hotel also became a paragon of culture. Its seclud ed location made it an exclu sive getaway for the high soci ety of the 20th century. The
hotel counts Winston Churchill, Charlie Chaplin, Au drey Hepburn and the Dalai Lama among its distinguished guests, as well as Grace Kelly who honeymooned at the idyllic resort. The resort is set to wel come guests once again from 2024.
