Linda Hall THIS spring, Campoverde Church in the Community decided to support their work with a sunflower growing competition. Named the Campov erde Sunflower Chal lenge, this was the brain child of church member James McAllister who is also a keen gardener and garden blogger. For a small donation to the Church, entrants re ceived two sunflower seeds with instructions for planting and taking care of them. In addition, they were given details of the dates when they should plant the seeds and when the resulting sunflowers should be measured. Campoverde villagers spent the summer feed ing, weeding and water ing their plants, some with far greater success than others.

SUNFLOWER CONTEST: Peter Barlow with his winning sunflower.
“Tales of woe abound ed,” James said. “Some seeds failed to germinate, whilst others which start ed off with such promise failed to reach their full potential or just withered through regretful neglect before August 27.” The results were veri fied by the judge, who visited and double checked the entered mea surements. The eventual winner was Peter Barlow with a sunflower that grew to 216 centimetres. The keen gardener was pleased with his efforts, as both his seeds germi nated and gave him great pleasure over the sum mer. Asked about the secret of his success, Peter said, “Just commonsense gar dening, lots of water and plant food once a week, with the added ingredient of prayer.”
