ALMUÑECAR enjoyed a week of activities and cele brations from Tuesday August 9 to 15 in honour of its patron saint, the Virgen de la Antigua, an invoca tion of the Virgin Mary, who is usually represented with the Child Jesus and a white rose. The festivities have changed a lot over the years, but they are an important tradition in Almuñecar and have been held since 1569. Activities included parades, a children’s puppet show, a foam party on the beach, masterclasses in Sevillanas (a type of music and dance from Sevilla) and Zumba, fairground rides, a flamenco show, fire works, plenty of food and drink and musical enter tainment provided by a wide variety of artists. The celebrations were a great success in terms of participation and organisation, once again bringing together hundreds of residents, young and old alike, who filled the streets and squares.
