Butane scam THERE is a different twist to the butane scam as it has been reported in San Pedro that some residents are receiving phone calls from individuals claiming to represent Repsol and arranging to make appointments to check the installation, when in fact they are unlicensed rip off merchants. By doing this they check to see whether the person has butane and makes them appear more reputable.

ACE FOR DOGS
Estepona hospital ALTHOUGH the new Estepona hospital opened its admissions service on March 8 this year, it was decided that for the sake of safety it would reserve accommodation for those suffering or recently diagnosed with Covid-19 infection. The Junta de Andalucia Health Service has now confirmed that it hopes to open the wards for general admissions in the summer months unless infections grow.

Clearing rubbish THE Mijas councillor for Parks and Gardens, Laura Moreno, visited the Mijas river path to supervise the clearing works that are being undertaken in the area. To carry out these tasks, the Parks and Gardens Area has two teams of four operators each, equipped with PPE personal protective equipment and the necessary tools and machinery. “With these two teams we are going to carry out 650,000 square metres of clearing throughout the municipality, to this we have to add the groups which are carrying out the cleaning of municipal plots and school bus shelters,” Moreno explained. But, in our constant work to improve the quality of our services, we continue to make progress for the enjoyment of all.”
Charity Golf Matches AFTER months of uncertainty caused by the Covid‐19 crisis, three Malaga‐based charities are joining forces. Saudi training Ecologists Malaka THE Saudi Arabian Olympic football team have chosen Estepona as the place where they want to prepare for the Tokyo Olympic Games. The mayor of Estepona José María García Urbano visited the football team from Saudi Arabia which was training at the Arroyo Enmedio sports facilities until June 11 and the team was due to play a number of friendly matches whilst in Spain. According to the town hall, Arroyo Enmedio has a regulation 11-a-side football pitch with natural grass, a building with changing rooms and shower area and a gymnasium where the teams can complement their physical training. Visits of this type not only help to stimulate overseas interest in the town, but also generate income for hotels and local businesses.
THE Ecologists Malaka group is fighting to stop the commercialisation of beaches along the Marbella coastline. Their latest action has seen the group oppose plans put before the Junta de Andalucia to build a new concrete chiringuito in the moragas area of Cable Beach which it alleges will occupy 300 m2 of public domain. Ecologists Malaka claim that if this project is authorised developers will appropriate an important part of the ground being used to park and unload supplies to celebrate moragas (where sardines may be cooked). According to the group, this is a proposal being supported by the Junta because it is opposed to the siting of the moragas and the building of a concrete chiringuito in the area, will take away a traditional area enjoyed by the people of Marbella. They believe that this is an example of limiting or preventing public use of beaches and they have expressed surprise that the concession petition is signed by the President of the Malaga Playas Entrepreneurs Association asking to give this grant to a company headquartered in Mijas.

Pusser’s Rum THE Gibraltar Office of Fair Trading has issued a recall notice for Pusser’s Rum mugs with blue rims given away on the Rock with purchases of bottles of the spirit. The reason for the recall is stated as ‘Migration of Cobalt’ and it’s known that prolonged exposure to that element can cause an asthma‐like allergy which can even in the worst case attack internal organs. For centuries, the British Royal Navy gave all sailors a daily tot of rum, but on Black Tot Day, July 31, 1970 this practice ceased and all of the remaining ra‐ tions were auctioned off, with the bulk being pur‐ chased by an entrepreneur who shipped it all to Gibraltar, where he sup‐ plied Naval officers with their much‐loved rum. In 1979, the Admiralty came to an agreement with Pusser’s Rum to al‐ low them the rights to use the original specification for the naval tot in return for a regular donation to the Royal Navy Sailors’ Fund and this recipe of a blend of five West Indian rums is still produced in the British Virgin Islands and sold throughout the world.

Canine DNA ALTHOUGH Benalmadena Council is determined to eliminate the leaving of dog excrement on public streets, it notes that only around 60 per cent (2,900) of the estimated number of dogs in the municipality have their DNA registered and Local Police will be increasing their surveillance activities.
Fuengirola first FUENGIROLA has opened the first interactive children’s game area in the province of Malaga in the Parque de España which is equipped with light and sound. The council will also arrange the modernisation of the children’s areas of the Castaños, Juan Pablo II and Fantasía parks.
Beach patrol FOR the second year running, the Local Police service in Manilva will detail two officers on special buggies to patrol the beaches of the municipality to ensure those using them are acting in accordance with prevailing rules and to assist in the event of any problems.

JAB FOR JUSTIN
MY name is Justin Boland, son of Maurice and Wendy, I grew up on the Costa Del Sol, in the Marbella area from when I was six years old. I’m now 45 (this week was my birthday - 13/06). I am a father of two boys, I work as Sales Director for world famous Engel and Völkers, and Covid-19 just tried to kill me! Generally, I live a healthy lifestyle, I don’t smoke, I don’t really drink, I play sports at least three times a week and pride myself on staying fit. I don’t have any underlying conditions! On Tuesday May 18 I’d had my typical session of paddle tennis. I have to admit I was feeling a little bit unusual, not very energetic and extremely hungry, which was not typical for me. By the time I got home my energy level had dropped and I put it down to just being hungry. I had my dinner and went to lie down when I suddenly started shaking. My fever went right up. I took paracetamol and went to bed. The next morning I woke up feeling great. No temperature, but by about 4pm I started to feel unwell again and my fever picked up. I decided to get a rapid Covid test, which came back negative. By May 25, I couldn’t resist any more and went to Hospiten in Estepona and to my shock, I received a call - I had Covid-19. Because I had already been sick a few days they recommended that I go to the ward and let the doctor inspect me properly. I stayed in the hospital a couple of days, during which I started to feel much worse. On May 28, the doctor recommended that I go to Santa Elena hospital in Malaga as they had the best treatment for Covid. On my arrival to Santa Elena,I was immediately put into ICU. I was hooked up to machines and put on oxygen. I was terrified at this point. The doctors had warned me if the oxygen was not sufficient to deal with the virus that was attacking my lungs they might have to induce a coma and put me on a mechanical ventilator!
HOSPITALISED: I will be grateful for the rest of my life to the ICU team.
HEALTHY: I play sports at least three times a week and pride myself on staying fit. It was then the realisation struck home and I began to worry, will I die whilst in a coma? On May 30, they decided to put me into a temporary coma in order to save my life. Being young and as I said before healthy, it took nine days altogether when my body started to respond and decided it was time to come out. I remember waking up, I had no idea what had happened. I had no idea why I was even under sedation (it took a while to come back to me) it was really odd. But what was really distressing and this is something quite normal, is for the time I was under, I had lost the ability to be able to physically walk, use my hands and my general condition was one of a very frail old man. Now understanding the fact that recovery will take a little while of course I understand
things better. I wanted to share my story because so many people out there think it would never happen to them. Well that’s just simply wrong and I’m proof of that. I am giving a real warning to people out there. Get Vaccinated! Unfortunately I was not in the age category to be vaccinated at that point. But I can promise you one thing if I had been none of this would’ve happened. Just imagine the person, simply by touching me they actually nearly killed me. You have the obligation as a human to help protect your fellow humans. I will be grateful for the rest of my life to the ICU team and I
for one am for ever thankful to be given a second chance in life. The English-speaking nurses work round the clock, they are diligent, humane and altogether amazing. Without their love and care I don’t know how I would’ve got through the most difficult 14 days of my life. Thank you so much, all of you! I of course want to also thank the Doctor who made that very difficult decision to save my life and for that I will never forget. Thank you Dr Elias Ceravola, you’re an amazing man and I will never forget you. You saved my life! Something really important to note. Even though the hospital has some of the most incredible emergency equipment, some of the more basic day-today things are missing as they are slowly investing in the hospital, for example some new wardrobes. The reassurance is so helpful but without the simple basics it makes their jobs quite difficult. Their focus should be solely on your health, so I think by getting the wardrobes, this is a small gesture where we will be helping them! Any donation will be greatly received, €5, €10, €20 whatever works for you. Even if we can get five wardrobes, that’s better than nothing! Music for Dementia
A Touch of Class will be performing. SOME Dementia care homes have realised the benefits of music and singing after patients re‐ sponded to favourite tunes played in their day rooms. The response was so beneficial, engendering a feeling of calm and satisfaction in both the sufferer and their fami‐ lies, that UK care homes began collating a cata‐ logue of songs which triggered the greatest recognition! Sandra Tavendale who runs the La Cala de Mijas Lions Alzheimer’s and De‐ mentia Awareness hoped that showcasing these dif‐ ferent genres of music would, not only produce a fabulous concert to raise awareness of this cruel disease but more importantly, it would be an uplifting celebration of what can still be achieved by Dementia sufferers. The opening song at a special all day music con‐ cert on June 20 at Club Miraflores will be ‘Tell Me’ written by 14‐year‐ olds Hannah, Heidi and Matt (Overdrive) which was created in honour of a beloved grandmother with Dementia. Other artists appearing include Laura Elen, Gem‐ ma Lloyd, Nick Cripps, Costa Soul Singers A Touch of Class and Drang a children’s steel drum band. Tickets cost €10 (of which €5 will be donated to the charity) and include a drink on arrival and two tapas are available from the Lions charity shop in Calle Torremolinos or 663 529 280.

The use of masks may be restricted THE Spanish President Pedro Sánchez has expressed his belief that “soon we are go‐ ing to abandon face masks’ when we are outdoors and that “cruising speed” has been hit with the ongoing vaccination programme in Spain. In only a matter of days Spain will see a stagger‐ ing 15 million people having been vaccinated. In the last week alone a record 3.5 million doses of the vaccine have been given. Speaking of the Spanish goal of hitting 70 per cent of the population vaccinated by summer, Sánchez highlighted that: “In a few weeks 50 per cent of the population will have at least one dose and the roadmap is clear and is being fulfilled.”

€5,706 for ACE dogs
IT is now a month since intrepid fundraisers Kasia Slomianna and Paul Shafto completed their 200 kilometre walk from Cordoba to La Cala de Mijas to raise funds for the ACE animal care. Money has been tight for ACE since the start of the pandemic, when for many months they were unable to raise any funds from special events or dinners and this was made worse by the terrible flooding earlier this year. The original idea came from Kasia as she was on furlough and really liked the idea of a long trek, initially via part of the Camino de Santiago trail, but due to the pandemic hostels were closed, so she had to plan a different route. Learning of her intentions, fellow dog lover Paul offered to accompany her and they made the trip in the timescale expected, although
blisters were something of a nuisance for Kasia at least. When they arrived back outside Biddy Mulligan’s in La Cala on May 15, they had received pledges of just over €3,000 and went on to enjoy a celebration at the neighbouring El Gusto restaurant. Now having recovered their collective breath and bathed their feet, they met with a representative of ACE on Monday June 14 to present a cheque in the sum of €5,706.25 to help the shelter to continue to look after the dogs that are so much in need of care. As well as support from the two walkers, Biddy Mulligan’s and El Gusto, mention should be made of Eyeprint and Nero Vodka who arranged for the production of the special cheque that can be used for future presentations.

THE Spanish Postal Service has managed to win two top awards at the World Post & Parcel Awards 2021, specifically in the category of Corporate Social Responsibility for its initiative ‘Help as much as we can’ and in the Postal e‐commerce for its platform Correos Market. The World Post & Parcel Awards are considered as the Oscars of the postal world and logistics sector and recognise excellence, leadership and the most outstanding proposals made by postal and logistics com‐ panies during the previous year. The winners met at a virtual gala held on Tuesday, June 8, due to pandemic restrictions. The initiative ‘Help as much as we can’ encompasses all the initia‐ tives promoted by Correos during the toughest period of the Covid‐19 pandemic. Demonstrating its vocation of public service, Correos put itself at the service of society, beyond the development of their usual activity, to get everything necessary to citizens, the most vulnerable groups and professionals who were performing essential tasks at the most critical moments. In the jury’s opinion, “Correos has taken corporate social responsi‐ bility to another level by encouraging community volunteering among its workers.” The mobilisation of all employees, and especially 3,292 volunteers, from the very beginning of the pandemic, created a solidarity network and during the 10 weeks of confinement, the volunteer staff of Corre‐ os participated in about 500 solidarity initiatives, giving logistical and human support to health workers, the elderly, vulnerable families, schoolchildren and all those groups that needed it.”

IT has been announced that Endesa electricity fraud inspectors will track you down if you try to fiddle your electricity supply. Juan de Dios Cerrato is a Cordovan man who is about to retire. He started working for the Spanish electricity supply company Endesa at the age of 19, becoming their youngest inspector, and he has devoted his entire 39 years of working life, to detecting electricity fraud. He says there has always been fraud, which he has been detecting since 1985, originally in the old sheet metal meters, where cheats made a tiny hole from which they made the disk that measured consumption stop, and now in remote-managed digital electricity meters. During his 39 years, he has seen all kinds of tricks, and Juan always warns that if you are tempted to fiddle your electricity meter to pay less, “Sooner or later you are always detected,” especially now that Endesa uses artificial intelligence to prevent such things from happening. With the new electricity regulations that came into force on June 1, the idea of lowering the electricity bill with illegal tricks can seduce many, although few actually dare, and the Internet is full of ‘how-to videos’ and detailed in-

Endesa reportedly detected nearly 63,000 cases of fraud last year, which amounts to a loss for them in excess of 753 million kilowatthours (kWh), and if the average consumption of a household per month is about 291 kWh, then that figure of lost electricity supply would be equivalent to the consumption of 2.58 million households during one month. The Penal Code establishes a penalty of three to 12 months for fraudsters.
Horse Races scheduled
THE Sanlúcar de Barrameda Horse Racing is one of the most important sporting and social events of the summer calendar, and this week, the Sanlúcar Town Hall in Cadiz and the Roy‐ al Horse Racing Society have
both agreed to allow the presti‐ gious horse race to take place once again in August, although the final permission will de‐ pend on a report from the Min‐ istry of Health regarding the pandemic situation at the time.
Queen Sofía Cleans Up AS part of SEO BirdLife’s Libera project, ‘QUEEN Mum’ HRH Sofía has rolled up her sleeves and joined in with a clean‐up day in a nature reserve. The day was part of a nationwide clean‐up initiative which was organised in conjunction with the major recycling firm Ecoembes. On Saturday volunteers from all over Spain were encouraged to give a few hours of their time as part of the initiative. Volun‐ teers were encouraged to spend a couple of hours clearing up a single one square metre of rubbish, in a natural area. Queen Sofía is no stranger to these activities and regularly takes part in clean‐up days. Queen Sofia, along with many of the regular volunteers are able to manage more than a single square metre. Previously she headed to Malaga to join in a mass clean‐up in September. This weekend Queen Sophia helped out at the Soto de las Juntas nature reserve in Madrid. Queen Sofía is 82 years old and is a patron of SEO BirdLife. Her age does not slow her down though and she joins in with as many volunteer projects as she possibly can.
This famous annual event where horses race on the beaches of Sanlúcar de Bar‐ rameda at the mouth of the Guadalquivir River ‐ the old Betis ‐ are the oldest in the national Turf and have been going since 1845, with the only breaks being during wars, and last year ‐ which would have been the 175th celebration ‐ because of the pandemic. In a meeting on Friday June 11, in the Consistory, chaired by the mayor, Víctor Mora, in the presence of Javier Porrúa, with the Tourism minister, and Rafael Hidalgo, the president from the Racing Society, along with rep‐ resentatives of the security forces, the decision was made to allow the races to take place, but not the traditional festival that accompanies it.

One reader commented “singling out one race from another is racism in itself. No colour race or creed is above another. All lives matter not just black ones. It is causing the racialism and segregation of humans. So yes, it is a per‐ fect statement.” Meanwhile, another reader posted a mes‐ sage from the FA to England supporters, in it could be read “as the team has reiterated many times, they will collectively take the knee ahead of their fixtures during the tourna‐ ment. They are doing this as a mechanism of peacefully protesting against discrimination, injustice and inequality. This is personally im‐ portant to the players and the values the team collectively represents. This gesture of unity and fighting against inequality can be traced back as far as the 18th century. When moving to Spain to retire over 10 years ago, she had no experience of advoca‐ cy, campaigning work or speaking in public. However, the result of the 2016 EU referendum affected her deeply and since then she has worked on the issue of UK nationals’ rights in various different ways. Sue has lobbied UK and EU influencers and made great efforts to inform the UK Gov‐ ernment’s work on citizens’ rights, including appearing in front of the Select Committee for Exiting the EU. SUMMER MONTHS: Police reinforcements will increase security for citizens in tourist areas. RAFAEL PÉREZ, the Secretary of State for Security of the Ministry of the Interior has activated Opera‐ tion Summer 2021, a plan that will reinforce the numbers of National Police and Guardia Civil in the nine autonomous communities of Spain that re‐ ceive the greatest influx of visitors: Andalucia, As‐ turias, the Canary Islands, Cantabria, Comunidad Valenciana, Galicia, the Balearic Islands, Madrid, and Murcia. Mr Pérez announced that Operation Summer 2021 will run from July 1 until August 31, 2021, ex‐ cept in the case of the Balearic Islands, where the plan will last until September 30, 2021. During this period, the National Police will be re‐ inforced with an extra 2,222 officers, while the Guardia Civil reinforcement will be another 1,599 troops. Aimed at reducing the risks associated with common crime, and to increase citizen security in these areas of high tourist interest, Operation Sum‐
mer 2021 allows increased surveillance and pre‐ ventive control in urban and interurban communi‐ cation routes, stations, ports, airports, hotels, beaches, and campsites, as well as on the occasion of any event that involves a large concentration of people. One of the priority objectives of Operation Sum‐ mer 2021 is to reinforce prevention against certain criminal offences against property, such as theft in‐ side homes, as well as offering extreme prevention against online scams, one of the crimes that pro‐ duce the most complaints during the holiday months as a result of the increase of the use of the internet to reserve accommodation and travel packages during the summer months. Operation Summer in Spain aims to provide pro‐ tection and security in general to all activities relat‐ ed to tourism, as well as to all national and foreign citizens who come or move through the national territory to enjoy their summer holiday period.

The National Police have indi‐ cated that the use of nitrous ox‐ ide for these purposes “can

Possible no return ACCORDING to reports over 200,000 people on ERTE face the prospect of not being able to return to their previous job. The ERTE (Expediente de Regulación Temporal de Empleo) agreement was brought about in a bid to fight back against the employment issues created by the coronavirus pandemic. It is believed that almost 500,000 people are still under the ERTE umbrella. Labour Minister Yolanda Díaz, has spoken about the figures and said that 15 per cent of the near four million workers who joined the scheme during the health crisis are still on ERTE. The government now believes though that not everyone will be able to return to their previous jobs. This issue comes about due to multiple factors
including that some businesses will not be able to reopen due to the current economy and also that according to the Bank of Spain many companies will not be able to survive as the ongoing health crisis has lasted for such a long time. According to experts training opportunities have been missed during the ongoing pandemic which would have allowed the workforce most affected by the pandemic to keep up their skills and learn new ones. The vice-president for economic affairs, Nadia Calviño, has previously expressed interest in the possibility of using the German ERTE model in Spain. This model includes training and retraining for workers. Sadly though not even a pilot project has been set up to test out this model.

be held in Madrid, to coincide with the 40th anniversary of Spain’s accession to the Atlantic Alliance. Mariano Rajoy, head of the previous Spanish Executive had also nominated Spain to host a summit, but the electoral cycles

IN a fantastic save, officers from the Guardia Civil have been able to save a 16-month-old baby from drowning in a removable pool in Sevilla. The accident took place on June 6 and the Guardia Civil were alerted by the coordination centre to the fact that a youngster had possibly drowned. They rushed to the scene of the incident and located the child’s father who was performing CPR. The Guardia Civil officers took charge of the baby and continued to perform CPR manoeuvres. Luckily the child started to breathe slightly. Medical services also set out to help and as soon as they arrived on the scene they took charge. They quickly rushed the baby to Sevilla Children’s Hospital. The child’s relatives have expressed their thanks to the Guardia Civil for their excellent work.

Hartlepool Monkey
R E P O R T S that have appeared in the UK press concerning perceived problems with the Hartlepool Monkey have been dismissed. The story developed when it was announced that the Hartlepool Council was considering adding an explanatory plaque to the monkey statue as it may offend some visitors by having possible racist connections. In fact, the story goes that during the Napoleonic Wars, a French ship was wrecked off the coast of an old fishing village on the north-east coast of England and the only survivor was a monkey that managed to get to shore. Those living in Hartlepool had never seen a monkey or a F renchman and as they couldn’t understand what it was saying, they assumed it was a F rench spy and hanged it. There is no real documentation to prove this, but it

Gordon Brown Won’t Give Up GORDON BROWN is still pushing for the UK to join the EU and said that he will not give up, stressing that this is his personal view and accepts that it is unlikely in the short term. Although the former prime minster was a strong remain sup‐ porter before the referendum in 2016, this is the first time he has explicitly called for the UK to return to the EU. “I want to rejoin the European Union,” Brown said. “I’ll not give up. I didn’t support joining the euro because I didn’t think it would work for Britain, it wasn’t because I objected to a single currency. “I’m not some mad integrationist that in all situations will say, integrate, integrate, integrate. But I do think our future is still Eu‐ ropean, and I do think that myself. But I recognise that’s not what’s going to happen in the very short term, and I also recog‐ nise that we’ve also got to find a better way of expressing global Britain, to persuade people of the need for international coopera‐ tion. “I’m only saying it as a personal view. I still regret leaving the European Union, and I still see a long‐term future as part of Eu‐ rope. And that’s all I need to say. That’s my contribution to the de‐ bate. I’m not there to decide Labour’s policy at the next election,”

THE Ministry of Health reported on Thursday June 10, after updating its report on vaccination activity in Spain, that 25.1 per cent of the population is already fully vaccinated against Covid‐19. This figure shows that 11,893,951 citizens are already fully immunised. According to the report, a total of 31,628,321 vac‐ cines have been administered, 624,261 alone since June 9, which represents a new record of doses inject‐
ed in one day. In addition, 43.5 per cent of the popula‐ tion has at least one dose, which represents a total of 20,628,061 people. According to these latest health data, the number of doses delivered in Spain amounts to 34,715,980, of which 31,628,321 have already been administered, which implies that 91.1 per cent of the total doses re‐ ceived have been administered.

THE EU parliament has backed a proposal allowing for digital proof of Covid vaccinations or negative tests. The measures are aimed at enabling restric‐ tion‐free travel within the EU as the summer tourism season be‐ gins. The long‐awaited certificate is aimed at saving Europe’s

Another cyber attack THE Ministry of Labour and Social Economy in Madrid was hit by a cyber‐attack last week. The Ministry tweeted at 11.27am on June 9, “The Ministry of Labour and Social Economy has been affected by a computer at‐ tack. The technical managers of the Ministry and the National Cryptological Centre are working together to determine the origin and restore normality as soon as possible.” In March 2020, the Ministry was hit by a cyber‐attack which se‐ riously impacted the Spanish State Employment Service (SEPE). SEPE was forced to suspend its communications systems across hundreds of offices and postpone thousands of appointments. Its website was also inaccessible for about two weeks and the ransomware attack delayed thousands of ERTE applications, cer‐ tificates and applications for other benefits just as Spain’s strict Covid‐19 lockdown took hold.

Rules for EU citi‐ zens were passed 546 to 93, with 51 abstentions. Those for people from outside the bloc passed 553 to 91, with 46 ab‐ stentions. It means that beginning July 1 for 12 months, all EU coun‐ tries must recognise the vaccine certificate. They will be issued free and certify that a person has either been fully vaccinated against the virus, has recently tested negative or has recov‐ ered from the disease.

Demonstrators against proposed pardons DEMONSTRATIONS took place last weekend in Madrid at the Plaza de Colon against proposed pardons for 12 Cata‐ lan separatists who were con‐ victed after a failed 2017 inde‐
pendence bid. The protests, organised by the Partido Popular (PP), Ciu‐ dadanos (Cs) and Vox, were at‐ tended by approximately 25,000 people.
Hertz Emerges Bankruptcy AS a result of its restructuring efforts, Hertz will emerge from Chapter 11 with a substantially stronger balance sheet and greater financial flexibility than it had prior to the onset of the Covid‐19 pandemic, which forced Hertz to file for Chapter 11 relief in May 2020. Hertz’s reorganisation plan will eliminate over €4 billion of debt, including all of Hertz Europe’s corporate debt, and will provide more than €1.8 billion of global liquidity to the reorganised company. Hertz also will emerge with a new €2.3 billion exit credit facility consisting of at least €1.07 billion of term loans and a revolving loan facility; and approximately €5.74 billion of as‐ set‐backed vehicle financing facility, each on favourable terms. The Plan provides for the payment in cash in full to all creditors and for existing shareholders to receive more than €820 million of value.
The pardons are widely per‐ ceived as a sop to President Pe‐ dro Sanchez’s coalition partners in La Moncloa. The mooted pardons are highly unpopular across the po‐ litical spectrum, including with Sanchez’s own party, the PSOE. Twelve Catalan separatist lead‐ ers were convicted for various crimes in relation to the inde‐ pendence bid in 2017. Nine of them received jail terms of be‐ tween nine and 13 years in Oc‐ tober 2019. Speaking at the protest, the leader of PP, Pablo Casado, called on President Sanchez to “respect national unity, the Constitution that he has promised to defend and to de‐ fend the equality of Spaniards and justice.” He added Sanchez should “look Spaniards in the face and explain why he wants to steal a part of their nation from them.”

Lottery Thief Arrested by Guardia A LOTTERY ticket thief has been arrested by the Guardia Civil in Valencia after buying a house with his winnings from the stolen ticket. In December 2020, the man had snatched a bag which not on‐ ly contained cash, but also con‐ tained a Lottery ticket for the Christmas special draw. A few days after he had stolen the bag the lottery ticket was awarded a second prize.

Primark Signs Sustainable Textiles Plan THE popular retailer has become a founding signatory of Textiles 2030, the UK Sustainable Textile Action Plan launched by WRAP. Over the next decade, this initiative aims to accelerate the fashion and textiles industry’s move towards circularity and significantly re‐ duce the environmental impact of clothing and home fabrics through practical interventions along the textiles chain. “By signing up to Textiles 2030, Primark is not only committing to taking significant action in relation to its own operations, including by encouraging its customers to use and dispose of clothing and textile products in new, more sustainable ways, but also collaborating with
other signatories through cross‐industry discus‐ sions to accelerate progress towards a circular economy for textiles and reverse the growing carbon impact of textile products,” the compa‐ ny said. Alongside other signatories, Primark will set targets for reducing whole life emissions, mea‐ sure the impact of its product portfolio, and act on priorities, reporting progress to WRAP an‐ nually. This includes reducing the aggregate greenhouse gas footprint of new products by 50 per cent, sufficient to limit global warming to 1.5°C in line with the Paris Agreement on cli‐ mate change and achieving Net Zero by 2050 at the latest.
The Benemérita began investi‐ gating after the victim filed a com‐ plaint on December 19. The wom‐ an had been at a Novelda restaurant and was eating a meal when her handbag was stolen from her. The bag contained €950 in cash along with a lottery ticket, which a few days later won a stag‐ gering €125,000. While the victim had only ini‐ tially reported the theft of the handbag, she soon decided to ex‐ tend the complaint on December 22, after she realised that her stolen lottery ticket had won a staggering prize. The investigation focused on a 52‐year‐old man, in the Valencian town of Alzira where the the man was found to have a long history of theft. Officers were able to dis‐ cover that he was living in a house which they believed he had pur‐ chased with his winnings from the stolen lottery ticket. The man was arrested on May 31. He has now been released with charges after being taken be‐ fore the Court of Instance and In‐ struction number 3 of Alzira and is being investigated for an alleged serious offence of theft.

Pub is not off limits Challenge in the Arctic
AFTER a judge’s ruling in the UK, a man is now in line for compensation after his former com‐ pany gave him the sack when he was spotted down the pub for a drink while being off sick. Colin Kane, aged 66, has a serious lung condition which is a result of him being a smoker. He had been a driver for Debmat Surfacing in Newcastle since 2012 and in March 2020 he called in sick. Later that day though he was spotted by a colleague out and about drinking alcohol and smoking at a social club local to his work‐ place. Colin soon received a call from his bosses but he claimed that ‘he had been in bed all day with his chest.’ This was the beginning of the end and he was soon called into a meeting with his man‐ ager who commented that: “Surely if you had been unfit for work and on antibiotics, you shouldn’t be in the pub.” Colin admitted that he had nipped to the pub, but believed that he had done nothing wrong as he had not been there for very long. Disciplinary action was started in July 2020, and the driver was sacked for being dishonest and breaching the company’s rules, however, Judge Andrea Pitt found that Colin had been unfairly dismissed as the rules of the company did not explicitly state that workers, when they are off sick, cannot socialise. She commented on the matter and said: “There is nothing in the disciplinary proce‐

Barcelo Opts For Renewable Energy BARCELO HOTEL GROUP and Endesa have extended their collaboration agreement to supply 100 per cent renewable electricity to all the chain’s hotels in Spain. In 2020, the electricity company supplied energy with a guarantee of renewable origin to the 18 establishments of the Occidental Hotels brand of Barcelo Hotel Group and this year the agreement extends to the electricity consumption contract of the 66 hotels of the hotel chain in Spain. Approximately 107 GWh of annual consumption at Barcelo Hotel Group facilities in Spain, that is equivalent to the consumption of more than 30,600 homes, will be covered with 100 per cent renewable origin guarantee certificates issued by the National Commission of Markets and Competition.

All the women have beaten cancer and have signed up for the stunning Pelayo Vida Challenge. Each year the challenge changes and in 2021 they wel‐ come in the ‘Pelayo Vida 66 North Challenge.’ The challenge has been named in reference to the 66th Parallel North, the fa‐ mous Arctic Circle. The stunning challenge is expected to take be‐ tween 15 and 20 days.

vAN operation named ‘The Telephone Operator’, by Organised Crime and Anti-Drug Team (EDOA) of the Sevilla Guardia Civil, supported by the Coordination Agency against Drug Trafficking (OCON Sur) and the Regional Centre for Analysis and Intelligence against Drug Trafficking (Crain) have arrested 15 people, finding six high-end vehicles and €1 million in cash. The Espia2 store located on Calle Recaredo is one of the 21 stores that the Guardia Civil carried out searches on during the morning of Wednesday, June 9, in many places and homes in the provinces of Sevilla, Malaga,
Cadiz and Madrid. In the Andalucian capital there were eight registries, among which one of the businesses on Calle Recaredo and another one in Palmete stood out. There were two more inspections in homes in this neighbourhood and in the Polígono Sur. In the province, there were records in Alcalá de Guadaíra and Carmona. According to the investigation, the amount of money uncovered is because the main clients of these stores were drug traffickers and high-level criminals, who do not usually pay with a credit card or bank
transfer, but rather cash in hand. Furthermore, the Guardia Civil considers this chain of spy goods stores as a criminal organisation dedicated to supplying the mafias with items to evade police detection. Although Guardia Civil sources did not specify what type of items, mainly they are frequency inhibitors, which cancel the action of the beacons and other police means to fight against organised crime. They are also joined by geolocators to control the position of officers and thermal cameras or with night goggles.

Unexpected Virus Replacing Covid AN unexpected virus is replacing Covid in Spain among children, and paediatricians have issued a warning. According to the latest report issued by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III, children up to four years of age are the ones being hit by the most respiratory infections. In fact, according to the report there are a staggering 179.6 cases per 100,000, and this number is growing. Emergency rooms, paediatric wards and ICUs are said to be full of children who are suffering from RSV bronchiolitis, something that would only normally be expected in December. As winter ended paediatricians breathed a sigh of relief as it appeared that with preventive measures the ongoing coronavirus pandemic was slowing down. This also seemed to limit the number of other common infections suffered by children.

David Andino, an emergency paediatrician at Madrid’s Niño Jesús Hospital took to Twitter to issue a warning and commented that: “Outside the hospital a suffocating summer heat. Inside the hospital the emergency, paediatric ward and ICU full of children with RSV bronchiolitis as if it were December.” The issue appears to be growing and the coordinator of Paedi-
atric Emergencies of the Hospital Gregorio Marañón and president of the Spanish Society of Paediatric Emergencies, Paula Vázquez López commented that: “They began as isolated cases in March. “In May a striking incidence was reached and it is increasing, but we do not expect a peak like the last season of bronchiolitis, in which we saw up to 1,200 children.”
Pensioners trips set to Return NOW that the majority of elderly and pensioners in Spain have received their vaccinations, the government has decided the time is right to start the Imserso trips once again, that everybody of this age group has enjoyed so much previously. With all being well with the pandemic conditions in the country - although no specific dates have yet been announced - September or October are expected to be the months when the trips will take place, for two main reasons: firstly, during these months, hotel prices are lower for pensioners to be able to afford it, and secondly, to enable tourism in the low season, so that the sector can continue functioning. Anybody who has not taken part in this scheme before, the requirements are very straightforward: all those who are retired pensioners of the public pension system, widows and widowers from the age of 55, those who are pensioners for other concepts, or recipients of unemployment benefits or subsidies, aged 60 or over, may travel. You can also benefit from these plans if you are a holder or beneficiary of the Social Security System, from the age of 65, or if you are a returned emigrant to Spain and a pensioner of the public Social Security System of the country from which you have returned.

Taking place off the south coast of England, the milestone marked a significant step towards the 65,000-tonne vessel reaching full operational capability. Operating together as part of Sea Acceptance Trials, it is the first time a fixed wing aircraft has landed on board HMS Prince of Wales. The trials test the ship’s capability to receive and launch aircraft whilst maintaining continuous air operations. The F-35B Lightning is designed to operate alongside RAF Typhoon aircraft and is jointly operated by the Royal Navy and RAF. It forms a central role within the UK’s Carrier Strike capability, already operating from HMS Queen Elizabeth and will be operating for the first time overseas as part of the Carrier Strike Group 21 deployment.
RYANAIR has welcomed the EU General Court’s annulment of the European Commission’s approval of State aid by Germany to Condor. In April 2020, the German government granted a €550 million loan to Condor, which had already benefited from a €380 million rescue loan from Germany in 2019 following the bankruptcy of its parent company, Thomas Cook. While the Covid-19 crisis has caused damage to all airlines that contribute to the economy and the connectivity of Germany, the German government decided to support only its inefficient ‘national’ airlines, including Condor. Ryanair referred the European Commission’s approval of this €550 million illegal subsidy to Condor to the EU General Court in 2020. A Ryanair spokesperson said, “The German government aid to Condor - both in 2019 and 2020 went against the fundamental principles of EU law and has distorted the market to the detriment of consumers.” The ruling is “an important victory for consumers and competition,” they said.
AMAZON’S billionaire founder Jeff Bezos has said that he and his brother Mark will fly on the first crewed space flight from his rocket company Blue Origin in July. “Ever since I was five years old, I’ve dreamed of travelling to space. On July 20, I will take that journey with my brother,” Bezos, who is one of the richest people in the world, said in an Instagram post. Bezos, who is due to step down as Amazon’s chief on July 5, will join the winner of an auction for a seat on the first flight from Blue Origin. Bezos, fellow billionaires Elon Musk and Richard Branson have been investing billions of dollars on their rocket startups, but Bezos will be the first of the three to actually travel into space on a rocket developed by his own company. France, Spain and the UK either set or intended to in‐ troduce special tax laws which saw a decision by the US to retaliate with the imposition of huge tariff in‐ creases on certain goods. Now at a meeting in the UK, G7 Finance Ministers agreed an in‐principle deal
to tax international com‐ panies on profits relating to in country sales. Currently a company can earn huge amounts of money in one country but pay very little tax there because they could set up their headquarters in an‐ other country and channel profits into there and pay lower rates of tax. Trade deals BRITAIN has secured new deals with Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein and it is the most advanced post-Brexit trade deal with the trio yet, the government claims. The agreement significantly cuts tariffs as high as 277 per cent for exporters to Norway of certain cheeses as well as Scotch Whisky. “Today’s deal will be a major boost for our trade with Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, growing an economic relationship already worth £21.6 billion,” said International Trade Secretary Liz Truss.

Harvesting plastic soup CREATED 18 months ago, Gravity Wave is a Spanish company dedicated to the col‐ lection of plastic from the seabed and transforming it in‐ to useful objects. The brother and sister team have teamed up with Enaleia, a foundation that works with traditional fishermen from the Mediterranean Sea who rather than throwing back plastic caught in their nets, sends it to Gravity Wave for transformation. They started small and used the reformed plastic to make cases for mobile phones, but are now branching out as their contact with more than 100 fishermen means that they have so far received some 70,000 kilos of plastic. June 6, 2021 registered year‐on‐ year growth of 102 per cent com‐ pared to the same period in 2020, and by 5 per cent compared to 2019. First quarter gross profit amounted to €2.96 billion. Net profit reached €421 million in the quarter, compared with a loss of €409 million in the first quarter of 2020.

Curbing youth unemployment
LATEST PLANS: Minister Yolanda Díaz made the announcement on June 8. IN a video speech on Tuesday June 8, Minister of Labour and Social Economy, Yolanda Díaz announced the latest plans to curb youth unem‐ ployment in Spain. With unemployment amongst those aged under 25 fast approaching 40 per cent, the largest number of unem‐ ployed in that age group in the European Union, the gov‐ ernment has published an 85 page document pledging €4.9 billion to tackle the problem over the next six years. According to Díaz, this is the largest amount ever com‐ mitted to reduce youth em‐ ployment but it must be re‐ membered, that when the PSOE took over the govern‐ ment, it made a €2 billion commitment to reduce youth unemployment in 2018. Rather than bring it down, the opposite was the result although in fairness, they couldn’t have forecast the ef‐ fects of the pandemic which
did see far more job losses than could ever have been predicted. In her speech, the minister observed “Knowing that we are facing an enormous chal‐ lenge, the strategy moves in relation to the recommenda‐ tions of the European Union,” who confirmed that the con‐ cept has been created follow‐ ing discussions with the 17 autonomous communities as well as unions and employers. Much of what is planned is dependent upon the creation of new technology businesses and the training of staff to work in them, many of whom will almost by definition be young, but this new industry does need to be funded and to date, Spain has still not re‐ ceived any money from the EU Recovery Programme. Spain also wants to see more young people becoming entrepreneurs, but again to do this it needs good ideas and easy access to cheap

Predictions come true
LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT TWO of Leapy’s predictions came to pass this week. When originally columned they were of course met with the predictable accusations of racism from those who exploit the term for anything they don’t agree with! One forecast, which I made almost a year ago, stated that as soon as the fans were allowed back into the football grounds they would let the players and officials know exactly what they thought of their knee taking, racist provoking homage to a Marxist organisation and criminal thug. Well. You only have to tune in to see how the truth of that statement has come to pass. In a blatant attempt to instigate the mass suppression of free speech the FA has issued a statement actually directing the fans not to boo the players. They also added that they could issue bans on those who ignore the warning. At their peril I would say! It’s not totally the fault of the teams of course. Referring to the topic in an interview Gary Neville, the England team manager, righteously spouted
that his players would ‘continue to take the knee against any form of racism in the game.’ This well‐ meaning, but utterly naïve comment from the man in charge, just shows how easily they have all been duped into making what is basically a political statement before the start of every match. These fan demonstrations are not derisory howls from thousands of racists; they are the reaction from a rapidly growing populace realising they are all being taken for mugs! A second prediction, which also provoked protest from the
disgruntled PC minority, was my more recent common sense observation that the spread of the new Indian Covid variant was probably due to the way thousands of Muslims were allowed to travel backwards and forwards from India and Pakistan to celebrate Ramadan and Eid. You only had to actually refer to a map of the UK to bear out this particular statement. All the new outbreaks initially began in areas predominantly inhabited by Asian minorities. It’s not

rocket science! Anyway I was delighted to see that politicians, including Boris Johnson, are now voicing the same concerns and admitting they should have perhaps not have been quite so lax in allowing this situation to materialise. Bit late now. At the time of writing it appears their erroneous decisions will put the whole nation, with all its accompanying misery and economic woes, back yet another month. Once again minority appeasement and ‘woke’ ideals have resulted in the detriment of the long suffering majority! In closing, I do find it interesting, but not unexpected, that when something I have forecast in the past comes to fruition there is a deafening silence from the former dissenters! Costa del Sol property Market Report Q1 2021 THE first three months of the year registered a busy quarter on the Costa del Sol. According to the Registrars Association (Colegio de Registradores) report for Q1, 7,208 properties exchanged hands in the area between January and March. This represents a 14.4% rise on the previous quarter. The resale sector saw particularly brisk activity. This type of transaction soared by 18.3%. Yearly figures aren’t quite so positive. Sales fell by 18.1% between April 2020 and March 2021, although the decrease wasn’t as high as some analysts expected given national and international travel restrictions. However, there was much better news for new‐build properties ‐ sales skyrocketed by 26.2% in the year. At national level, the Costa del Sol posted some of the best sales figures in Q1 this year. In terms of
total sales, 23,518 property transactions took place, the fifth‐ highest figure in Spain. Sales of new‐build properties reached 6,319 in Q1, the third highest in Spain (behind just Madrid and Barcelona). The figure represents a rise of 26.2% in a year. Malaga City appears to have taken the lead in price rises for Costa del Sol property this year, a position usually held by Marbella and Estepona. According to the Registrars Association, the city saw a year‐ on‐year price hike of 13.6% in Q1 with the average square metre coming in at €2,190. Tinsa reported that Malaga property saw the highest yearly increase in Andalucia. The valuations company said that prices rose by 5.1% in Q1. Bottom line? Sale figures are starting to show pent‐up demand, which will only increase as Spain relaxes its travel restrictions from June onwards. After months of a downward trend, Costa del Sol prices have returned to an upward trajectory.

Which floor are you living on?
ROBERT SHALLIS HAVE you experienced being in an elevator when the doors open to a busy, chaotic, noisy floor full of confusion and stress with people rushing around with what appears to be no real direction? You feel a sense of relief that you are not getting off on that particular floor and experience calm as the doors close. The doors open at another floor which is incredibly dull, lifeless and boring and by that same token you feel grateful that this also isn’t your floor. It’s easy to be on the outside passing judgement in other people’s lives, but not easy to see clearly when we are going through the everyday routine of life whether it’s full of stress and chaos or dull and mundane. We become accustomed to living the way we live and tend to accept things as they are. “Well, that’s just life.’’ As you all too often hear. So, what is your ideal floor and what level are you ‘really’ living on? It would be wonderful to simply switch to another floor and elevate yourself to a better place. However, too

many of us are stuck where we are and, in some ways, too frightened to press that button to make a change for the better. So, why is this and why do we get so stuck in a situation that we would prefer not to be in? Fear of the unknown and fear of change tends to prevail over our current lives and therefore the outcome we
would really like tends to slot into second place. Fear wins every time. The idea of change is exciting and there is a big part of us that desires change but it doesn’t happen. So how do you get off that particular floor of life and join the ranks of those passing by in the elevator going to places you could only have hoped? Once you have a made that decision
to change, add a few ingredients ‐ belief, faith and trust in your ability. You often hear people say; “well, if they can do it then so can I.” This is because they have experienced another, not unlike themselves, achieve something they too want to achieve. The reality of their experience will give a sense of belief and the urge one to take action as it feels so much more achievable.
Ignore the negativity of others, for they will remain stuck on their own floor of life, the very same you will be closing the doors to as you move on to new heights. When you are in the process of achieving your worthwhile goal or purpose, you will find a sense of happiness and fulfilment as you progress forward. The brave decision alone to change floors, will if anything, ignite roaring fires of excitement and hope. So, which floor are you living on and which floor would you really like to go to? There are only so many tomorrows, if you really want to do something, now is the time! You have a choice, continue to be driven by your fears or allow yourself to be driven by what you really want in order to expand, grow and up‐level. Not so sweet SUGAR is a natural component of food like fruits and vegetables, but eating too much of it comes with consequences. The study, from Waseda University in Tokyo, was the first to look at how chewing gum affects the body whilst walking. All previous studies had set out to discover how it impacts the body whilst resting. The research team which presented the findings at the recent European Congress of Obesity in Vienna concluded that: “chewing gum while walking affects a number of physical and physiological functions in men and women of all ages.” This is welcome news for the chewing gum industry and not the first time that chewing gum has been associated with health benefits. Previous studies have found that chewing gum on a regular basis can help to reduce stress and protect your teeth from plaque and decay.

IN my newsletter last week I went through a detailed description of injections for knee pain which prompted more questions about op‐ tions. THE easing of restrictions both in Spain and in the UK is remarkable ‐ and nice ‐ for several reasons. But the most important is: how much the simple pleasures of ev‐ eryday life get lost in the familiarity of dai‐ ly routine. Only when we are denied them do we re‐ alise what a complicated life we lead. It is this latter element that shocks us most. Of the hundreds of minor, even flippant, activ‐ ities we indulge in, we’re suddenly unable to replace them with anything useful or satisfying. Even working from home fails to make up for missing colleagues, chit‐chat and... just everyday life. So, when released from these tortuous restrictions, we happily revel in anything that is different. Especially when it involves other people in similar situations. It sud‐ denly seems as if having fun is everywhere and so easy to find. Voices seem louder and more important. Laughter is easier to come by and everyone has stories of how they ‘survived’. Boredom is a long way off, and

THE EUROWEEKLY NEWS is urg‐ ing its readers to support local businesses in the community by going local now that the lock‐ down has ended and for your all your shopping this year, in‐ stead of feeding online giants and superstores. We challenge you to rediscov‐ er your local high streets, mar‐ kets, butchers, greengrocers and all of the wonderfully quirky in‐ dependent businesses in your area. Now that the Covid‐19 pan‐ demic appears to be under con‐ trol, it is a good idea to try and support many local businesses by ordering online and making use of any click and collect ser‐ vices they can operate, especial‐ ly if you are unable to get out due to health reasons or any other restrictions. The joy of shopping local means that independent busi‐ nesses can help support the local community. Although it may be a euro or two cheaper elsewhere or on‐ line, consider where your money is actually going. By shopping at an indepen‐ dent store you’re putting food on a local family’s table, and there is no better time than now to give back to your community by making a small gesture and shopping in this way. Many local stores support lo‐ cal charities, support and spon‐ sor local sports teams and in many cases the small indepen‐ dent stores are actually much more than just a small high street shop, they’re a family’s legacy, often passed down through numerous generations and support not just the current owner but the generation be‐ fore. For those stores which are new, that extra couple of euros spent there are supporting
someone’s dream and ambition, and also the courage it took them to step out alone, which is no easy task. It takes quite a large chunk of money to set up an independent store and com‐ pete with the multinational and chains. So be sure to pre‐order your meat from a local butcher and get your spuds from a local greengrocer, let us revive that community spirit and get to know our neighbours again. You could also consider pur‐ chasing gift vouchers from local businesses to help them over the coming weeks, thinking out‐ side the box can often lead to some fantastic ideas. Why not buy a meal for two, an hour’s tattoo time at a local studio, a hair cut at a local salon or an on‐ line study course for someone looking to change their career path. As people are struggling with finances thinking about what friends and family may actually need is important too. Whilst it’s nice to give a glamourous gift perhaps pre‐paying a family member’s phone bill for the
month would actually be a bet‐ ter gift. Helping people alleviate stress and worry, give the gift of peace of mind through these dif‐ ficult times. Choosing to spend your mon‐ ey locally will really make a dif‐ ference in the recovery of the lo‐ cal economy. When we buy local, our money stays local, and it strengthens the local economy in two ways. First, buying local keeps money circulating within the local economy. Money circulating through the local economy benefits ev‐ eryone who is a part of each transaction. For example, let’s look at a local farmer growing produce. First, they sell to a local
restaurant, which in turn pre‐ pares the fresh produce and sells it to local customers. The farmer pays its local employees and the restaurant uses revenue from sales to buy supplies from a neighbourhood hardware store. This example illustrates how the recirculation of money in the lo‐ cal economy leads to a stronger financial foundation for our neighbours and communities. Buying local also fuels new employment and job opportuni‐ ties for people within our com‐ munity. Views of a Grumpy Old Man MY pal in Glasgow had a problem with his iPad so he went to his local Apple store and was told he couldn’t enter without an appointment. I thought it was strange but gave it no more thought ‘til I needed a new battery for Mrs S’ iPhone. I rang my local store, which is a 20minute drive from home. The website gave me the 952 local Spanish number and I went through the usual press 1 for this, 2 for that, until I finally got a human being. We went through the usual pleasantries, he told me his name and how he was going to be absolutely delighted to help me. I explained I needed a new battery, he asked where I was located and he then said there were no appointments - ever! I said, can you hear what you are saying, this is madness, can I speak to the store manager please? I’m then informed that’s not possible as he’s not actually at that branch but in the Philippines. But I phoned my local store. Yes but appointments are done from the Philippines. OK put me through to a supervisor and after about 10 minutes on hold I am greeted by Helen who has been made aware of my problem and she is go-
ing to help me. Are you in the Philippines too? Nope I’m in another country! Anyway Michael when would you like an appointment? When can I have one? Helen tells me any time tomorrow. But I thought there were none ever? We booked one for the next day. I asked why I had to go through this song and dance. She couldn’t explain so we left it at that. Next day the store entrance looked like a scene from the movie Contagion with security guards taking your temperature, a ziggy-zaggy entry system, then plastic gloves, hand sanitiser on top of the gloves and this is all before you have spoken to an Apple employee. Finally they take the ‘phone away and tell me to come back in 90 minutes which I do only to be told it’s not ready for another 30 minutes. When I return it’s ready and they let me enter again with more gloves and more sanitiser. When I get the ‘phone the screen is cracked all over. Oh yes, it must have been cracked when it came in. NO IT WASN’T! The guy disappears for a few minutes then says, OK we will replace it free of charge, like he’s doing me a favour! Of course you will, you broke it! After another two hours, more gloves and sanitiser my ‘phone is ready. So that was five hours of my life and €250 spent on bored purchases in the mall! Email: mikesenker@gmail.com

The truth is that many SUVs are now hybrids with smaller combustion en‐ gines, so the days of every SUV being oversized with a large petrol or diesel addict‐ ed engine is not the full story.

Kia Sorento is imposing Kia’s newly launched Sorento models and the self‐charging hybrid Soren‐ to in particular is a good case in point. Its 1.6‐litre petrol engine is bolstered by a 64 kw battery deliver‐ ing 40 mpg economy in a very spacious SUV with proper off‐road capability and a
real family holdall. Hybrids remove any range concerns and the need for an expen‐ sive home charger, or deal‐ ing with our somewhat frag‐ mented (I’m being polite!) public charging network. Priced from €45,802 (£39,360) the Sorento line‐ up offers both plug‐in and self‐charging hybrids and all models look suit‐ ably impos‐ ing.
Standard equipment across the range of Sorento models includes heated seats and steering wheel, smart cruise control, LED headlights, reversing cam‐ era, dual zone air condition‐ ing for all seats, auto dim‐ ming mirrors, auto wipers and lights, Apple Car Play and Android Auto. My top of the range self‐ charging hybrid version is the automotive equivalent of the Ritz, adding such items as leather, power adjustment of the
seats, privacy glass, heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, keyless entry and start, power tailgate, pow‐ ered folding door mirrors, along with navigation, wire‐ less charging and a Bose sound system onto the en‐ try level list of equipment. Costing €54,629 (£46,945) you would expect it to be well equipped and when you add all the above items to the level of tech, it does‐ n’t disappoint. There are a myriad of safety features in‐ cluding a head‐up display and a clever speed limit based intelligent cruise con‐

trol, all‐wheel‐drive and the clever hybrid system which charges itself from the car’s engine. It not only removes those range concerns but provides a cleaner emis‐ sions record than would normally be the case with a more traditionally powered SUV of this size. If I were being picky about the Sorento then some of the controls are not especially intuitive and the layout of the dash controls is a little fussy, but owner‐ ship would soon bring famil‐ iarity. It is a minor point in a car that has a distinct feel‐ ing of luxury with its com‐ fortable, quilted leather seats, hushed interior and solidity of build quality.

Speedometers and your real speed EVERY year, thousands of drivers are reported for speeding in Spain, and data from 2020 shows that the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) imposed more than €2.4 million fines for this infraction, which represents 62.7 per cent of the total penalties handed out for traffic offences. As we all know, the speedome‐ ter is the device that indicates the speed of a vehicle, and without go‐ ing into technical disquisitions, this is how the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) defines it, but, when we talk about the speedometer as installed in a vehi‐ cle, it is a well‐known fact the de‐ vice is not displaying the actual speed the vehicle is travelling at. In fact, the speedometer always shows a higher speed than the ac‐ tual speed, on all vehicles, without exception, whether it is analogue or digital, for legal reasons. In the European Union, the reg‐ ulations establish that the indicated speed should never be lower than the real speed with a maximum margin of error on the real speed of 10 per cent, or + 4 kmh, whereas in other countries, such as the United States and Japan, with a long auto‐

Put into practice, this means in a European vehicle travelling at a speed of 60 kmh, the maximum er‐ ror limit indicated by the device is 10 kmh, and if your vehicle shows a speed of 70 kmh, it means that you are travelling between 60 and 70 kmh, but never below 60 kmh. At a speed of 100 kmh, the max‐ imum error limit is 14 kmh, so even if the speedometer indicates that the car is travelling at 114 kmh, it
will be doing so between a hairpin that goes from a minimum of 100 kmh to a maximum of 114 kmh. Apart from the fact that the leg‐ islation establishes that this is the case, we can verify it ourselves first‐ hand, by using a GPS device to monitor the speed, as it is a much more precise device, receiving its signal from a satellite which locates the position of your vehicle, and then calculates its distance and di‐ vides this data by the time taken to travel this distance, to produce the velocity shown in the GPS display,
and you will see that the speed reg‐ istered by the GPS will be lower than that shown by your vehicles speedometer. There are other factors that can affect the speedometer reading, such as tyre pressures, because a speedometer calculates the vehi‐ cle’s velocity by measuring the ro‐ tation of the wheel and the drive‐ shaft, through a sensor located in the gearbox, therefore, tyres with different wear can produce differ‐ ent calculations of up to 2kph ap‐ parently.
