A total of 92 officers lined up to donate their blood, in a very satisfactory campaign, with 86 of them providing an effective result, including nice officers who were giving blood for the first time, while six failed to donate an effective supply, for various medical reasons.

Cancer screening charities back THERE was a tremendous turnout at the Miraflores Golf Club on Easter Saturday where members took part in a charity event which raised €9,500. The money will be used by the local charities Positively Pink and Positively Blue and founder, Lorraine Palmer would like to personally thank the Golf captains at the Club from 2019/2020, Alan Watts and Noreen Bramley for their generous help. With the organisational skills of Sarah Shelton and the generosity of the Club members, who supported the many different events throughout the period, an amazing €9,500 was raised and presented to Positively Pink and Blue on the day Every single penny of this will
be used to screen people within local communities and Positively Blue is currently offering free PSA Blood test for Prostate screening at Clinica Campanario clinic in Calahonda with vouchers available from Jan Jones on 616 507 629. Positively Pink will shortly announce details of 2021 Breast Screening Programme at Clinica Radiologica in Fuengirola. After the problems of 2020, it is a pleasure to be able to advise that the charities are operating again and with their involvement, screening may help avoid a Cancer Covid Crisis especially as some recent reports have suggested an increase in cases of both Prostate and Breast Cancer, whilst testing in some areas is not as accessible as it has been in the past.

Local Theatre THE Lagunas Theatre is located in Mijas Costa, and presents music, dance, theatre and events. The venue was opened to much fanfare in March 2007 and occupies an area of 3,000 m² and seats 640 people, distributed between the stalls, the boxes and the circle. Among the performances that were scheduled and had to be cancelled were the Fran Perea concert that has been moved to May 22, as well as humour-oriented works with ‘8 Andalucian surnames’ and local works by Teatro Mijas. “José Tejada will also attend for another year with his ‘Mind Hacker’ show, as well as the work of Manolo Medina ‘Tanto monta monta tanto, and the monologues of La Cochera, in what will be a very varied programme,” said the councillor. Anyone interested in joining the programme that will run until June 16 can visit the Mijas City Council website at the entrance of the Las Lagunas Theatre itself.
Diabetes coffee morning THE next coffee morning organised by La Cala Lions Diabetic Support Group will be held at Bar Tuta, La Cala on Monday April 19 from 11am. As well as the HBA1c test, their team of nurses from Angels Nursing will hold a mini clinic where they will check blood pressure, oxygen capacity, eye and feet tests and simple kidney function. FLAMENCO: Is to receive funding from the Junta. AFTER everything that has happened over the past year, we all need a chance to start feeling good again, and what better way than by helping others? If you want to make a difference and put a smile on the face of those who need it most, read on. On Saturday, April 24 an event which has already got hun‐ dreds of people, families and companies involved will take place in Puerto Banus harbour at the Muelle de Honor from midday until 6pm. Caritas is known as the helping hand of the Church ‐ reach‐ ing out to the poor, vulnerable and excluded, regardless of race or religion, to build a better community. Debra is a charity that supports individuals and their fami‐ lies affected by Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) a rare skin disorder which causes the skin to be very fragile and painful to touch. Fundatul is an organisation based in San Pedro Alcantara which helps disabled people to find proper employment. There will be all sorts of items for sale to raise funds for charity, including fashion, accessories, decoration, food and sport and health goods. Prompt payer THE average time for councils in Spain to pay suppliers is 47.9 days, but Estepona Council, having paid €9,312,093 during the first quarter of 2021 has announced that its payments are now made within 10 days which gives a boost to the local economy.

New Gibraltar route THERE is another new destination for Gibraltar travellers as British Airways is to introduce twice weekly summer flights to London City airport. The service will be operated by BA CityFlyer on Mondays and Fridays and will complement the current Gibraltar to Heathrow flights offered by parent company British Airways. Initial one‐way fares are £43 and went on sale on April 8 for flights starting on June 25 of this year and if bookings are made now, then the BA flexible poli‐ cy will apply whereby no change fee is imposed or a voucher is offered for bookings made for travel before April 2022. The route will be operated by BA CityFlyer’s Brazilian Embraer E190 aircraft which seats up to 98 people in two rows of two.
Free Insurance
ANDALUCIA will provide non‐ resident international travellers with free insurance with Covid‐ 19 coverage up to December 31. Spanish tourist officials have voiced their concerns about how the UK’s ‘traffic light’ sys‐ tem will impact the summer season. The concerns follow Jet2’s decision to suspend all flights and holidays until June 23. Andalucia’s tourism website states that the following will be covered by the insurer: ‘Medi‐ cal and surgical expenses and fees, pharmaceutical expenses related to convalescence from Covid and hospitalisation ex‐ penses,’ in a bid to promote the return of safe tourism. Mr Marin added: “The inter‐ national travel insurance offers travellers up to €4,000 of cover on medical expenses, sanitary repatriation and extension of stay in the case of a Covid‐19 infection, providing visitors with the confidence that they are safeguarded during their trip.”

El Corte Ingles cuts THE restructuring of El Corte Ingles Costa del Sol could affect 460 jobs in Mijas alone. The management of El Corte Ingles commu‐ nicated to its staff on Wednesday, April 7, its intention to restructure the Mijas store in a plan that will result in a “significant reduction in personnel and commercial square metres,” according to Spanish daily La Opinion de Mala‐ ga. The store was inaugurated back in 2006 and the plan to downsize may affect up to 460
of its workforce in the Costa del Sol town. Experts and union leaders say the rise of on‐ line sales accelerated by the pandemic, with customers being inundated with special online offers, has been one of the reasons to let em‐ ployees go. The company is also having diffi‐ culty connecting to the under 30s market and has not been able to expand beyond Portugal, leaving it more exposed to the ups and downs of the national economy.
Musical Performances Leading out MARBELLA musical performances are set to take place in the Teatro Cuidad. According to Marbella Council: “The second edition of the ‘Can‐ tos Velados’ will bring together on the stage of the Teatro Ciudad de Marbella the musicians Javier Alvarez, Tulsa and La Bien Queri‐ da.” They added the performances would take place “on Thursday April 15, Friday April 16 and Saturday 17 April, respectively, at 8pm, in an event where artists will share songs and readings with the po‐ et Alejandro Simon Partal.” The performances will start today, Thursday, with Javier Alvarez, eclectic and unclassifiable singer‐songwriter from Madrid who 25 years ago began sweeping the sales lists. On Friday, April 16, it will be Tulsa, while on Saturday, April 17, there will be a performance of La Bien Querida. The council said: “Tickets will be by invitation until capacity is reached and can be picked up, free of charge, at the box office of the Teatro Ciudad de Marbella, with a maximum of two per per‐ son.”
ANDALUCIA is leading Spain in the creation of new businesses as Febru‐ ary saw an increase of 14 per cent in registrations across the region. This has been put down to the framework of trust generated by the Junta de Andalucia. The Presi‐ dent, Juanma Moreno, has fostered such a stable environment for com‐ panies to settle in the community that the number of commercial companies incorporated in Andalu‐ cia in February was 1,458, repre‐ senting an increase of 14.2 per cent compared to the same period last year. These figures were confirmed by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) and published on Wednesday, April 14.

Photography Contest ON Monday April 12, the mayor of Medio Environ‐ ment, Arancha López, an‐ nounced that Mijas Coun‐ cil will hold a photography contest for the flowering spring that will focus on the unique trees in the town, to attract visitors. The contest has four prizes, three are chosen by a jury and one will be judged according to the most ‘Likes’ obtained on the photo on the Facebook page of the Mijas Depart‐ ment of the Environment. The mayor has stressed that the new initiative will be active through the month of April and aims to showcase these specimens for the value of tourist vis‐ its that relate to nature. Each participant can submit up to three images to environment@mijas.es, and will be published on the municipal website. Im‐ ages cannot exceed 5MB and must be in JPG format, photograph retouching is also allowed. The last day for delivery will be April 30.
Trapped horse ON Sunday April 11, a call to the emergency services on 112 alerted them to the fact that a horse had fallen into a ditch in Benahavis and become stuck. The animal fell into the ditch at Sendero Acequia del Río Guadalmina and got its legs trapped underneath a metal walkway which meant it could not escape. Officers from Marbella and San Pedro fire brigades attended and were face with a difficult situation due to the angle at which the mare was trapped and her state of anxiety. The officers decided the safest way was to hoist the animal by means of slings and two trailers. Before the rescue was started the owner was contacted as well as a veterinarian. After around three hours, the mare, known as Dona was rescued safely.

Expatriate sends Covid-19 vaccination proposal to the British Embassy MANY UK passport holders who are resident in Spain are anxious to obtain information about when they are likely to receive their Covid-19 vaccination. They have seen the situation in the UK speed up dramatically, whilst the Spanish health system, whilst doing its best, is much slower, due to the fact that it cannot obtain large supplies of vaccine quickly even though its population is about two thirds of the UK. The more people who can receive the vaccine, the quicker the country will open up and be able to return to some semblance of normality with the option to regenerate the tourism industry which accounted for 12.4 per cent of Gross Domestic Product in 2019 and earned the country €154.48 billion according to the Institute of National Statistics (INE). One person in the Costa del Sol who has roots in Gibraltar considered the situation and saw the UK Government was using the RAF to deliver vaccine to the Rock to allow the Health Authorities there to quickly and efficiently vaccinate the adult population who are considered British subjects. She therefore wondered whether there would be an
opportunity to suggest that Britain should consider using the Gibraltar facilities to invite British passport holders in Costa del Sol and Cadiz Province to be inoculated there. To this end therefore, she contacted the British Embassy in Madrid by telephone and explained her idea and was asked to confirm this via email which she has done and currently awaits a response following a second email. Clearly, it’s not an easy solution as it would require the involvement of both the British and Gibraltar Governments with vaccines being flown by the RAF and whilst the prevention of movement across provinces could delay matters, it could also be something that the British Embassy could raise with the Junta de Andalucia. There are permitted reasons to allow individuals to cross provinces, one of which includes medical matters. When discussing the concept with friends and other contacts, there were two negative threads, being that the Spanish population might be upset that the British were ‘jumping the queue’ although her response was that all of her Spanish friends have commented that they would be delighted as it frees up more vaccine for

Also, there was a suggestion that it was unfair on those who didn’t live near to Gibraltar as they would not benefit and to some extent this is true but once again, the more people who are vaccinated outside of Spain, the more vaccine will be available for those inside. Britain has on numerous occasions said that it considers the welfare of all British passport holders, resident across Europe, as being of major importance, not just because of Brexit but because it has an obligation to protect their wellbeing. This may be a small way in which it can assist just a few people, but this is an opportunity for both the UK and Gibraltar to show its solidarity with British expatriates in the south of Spain.
Skating Champs
Gold medal cadet category Ainara Cabello. THE National first Trophy of Alhaurín de la Torre was held from the April 1 to April 4, at the Blas Infante de Alhaurin De la Torre pavilion. Almost 100 skaters from 15 clubs participated from all over Spain, from areas such as Madrid, Basque Country, Balearic Islands, Murcia, Valladolid, Barcelona. They were judged by a panel of international judges, selected by the national committee. The Alhaurín de la Torre Skating club won the following medals: Bronze medal in infant category, Ainhoa Caravaca Gold medal cadet category, Ainara Cabello Bronze medal Junior category, Marina Mestanza Silver medal senior category, Nuria Villalba Due to the current pandemic situation, travelling authorisations were issued in order to celebrate the competition. The closing ceremony of the championship was made by Don Joaquín Villanova (mayor of Alhaurín De la Torre) and Maria Del Mar Martinez (Sports’ Council). It is a competition of national prestige that will be held from now on every year at Easter.
DONKEY sanctuary, Donkey Dreamland in Mijas, has today an‐ nounced one of their donkeys gave birth to twins ‐ something that is extremely rare. In late September, Donkey Dreamland sanctuary, Mijas, res‐ cued a donkey that was named Es‐ peranza (or Hope, in English) who was being kept in a field sur‐ rounded by un‐castrated males, so it is no surprise Esperanza fell pregnant! At 7.30am on Monday, April 11, Esperanza began to give birth, as‐ sisted by the sanctuary’s founder Amaya. It soon came to light that this was no ordinary birth, and Es‐ peranza was having twins. Out of around 40 million don‐ keys in the world, it’s estimated that only around 1.5 per cent of all donkey births are twins, so this was an extremely rare event. Sad‐ ly, only around 10 per cent sur‐ vive. Unfortunately, one of the twins who was lovingly named Angel did not survive. The miracle is that the other twin managed to pull through, baby Luz. The surviv‐ ing donkey is currently in hospital and being looked after by six dedi‐ cated vets who are doing their ut‐ most to help him survive. He is re‐ ceiving oxygen through a mask, milk through a tube and blood through a transfusion from Esper‐ anza to help raise his oxygen lev‐ els. Although this rare event comes with sadness, it is also a miracle for baby Luz to have survived and Donkey Dreamland is now looking to members of the public for help. Although the total cost for the care of baby Luz is unknown as yet, over two days the treatment has already cost €2,000 (£1,731.17). The sanctuary is looking to raise as much money as possible for Es‐ peranza and the baby foal to live a happy life and for Esperanza to not have to come to terms with losing two of her foals.

Age Concern Raffle THE Age Concern Easter Raffle was held at 12 noon on Wednesday March 30. We were joined by an eager number of ticket holders out‐ side our shop in Los Boliches. During the previous four weeks fundraising volunteers had been diligently selling raf‐ fle tickets. Our shop was also inundat‐ ed with customers buying tick‐ ets in addition to their normal purchases. The support we received from local businesses and the community was overwhelm‐ ing. Even in these difficult times everyone dug deep and came together to support our older residents. All in all we received an in‐ credible number of quality raf‐ fle prizes. New Salary Measures FROM Wednesday, April 14 all companies in Spain will be legally required to keep comprehensive records of the salaries of their workers, a measure which the government hopes will help to close the large pay gap that exists be‐ tween men and women in this country, which currently stands at 22 per cent, according to Spanish daily Levante. According to the Central Business Directory (DIRCE), the new regulations will impact some 1.5 million companies throughout Spain, although the latest data available from the National Statistics Institute shows that roughly 900,000 of these businesses have only one or two employees on their books. According to the UGT deputy secretary general, Cristina Cristina Antoñanzas, has acknowledged that the difference in
salaries between women and men is currently “very high” and she is confident that the new systems “are going to put on the table that in many companies, there is inequality.” Furthermore, workers will now have the right to access these records and can take up any issues with their union represen‐ tatives. Any unjustified inequalities can lead to fines of up to €187,000 for the companies. Last month, a report released by the Adecco Group Insti‐ tute found that the average salary in Andalucia has fallen by 1.6 per cent year on year, which represents half the national average in Spain. A worker on the Costa del Sol can now ex‐ pect to earn an average of €1,475 per month, which is the fifth lowest monthly pay in the entire country, according to the Adecco analysis.

Covid Hoax A NEW Covid vaccination hoax in Fuengirola and Mijas is being spread via social media. Mijas Comunicacion has reported a new hoax being spread via social media networks claiming to be from the health centres in Fuengirola and Mijas containing false information that people born between 1956 and 1958 can telephone to request a vaccination appointment using the AstraZeneca vaccine. It also says that those born between 1942 and 1944 can request an appointment to be vaccinated with the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine. This information is false and, for now, the only people who can and should telephone to be vaccinated are those over 80 years of age or older and have not yet received the vaccine. People who are not in this age group should refrain from requesting a vaccination appointment, as it may interfere with the operation of health centres in such a critical and overloaded time. The health authorities are currently continuing to study the possibility of increasing the priority rank for other age groups, however, this has not yet been established. Appointments must be made by calling the health centres of Las Lagunas (626 565 482) or La Cala and Mijas Pueblo (669 745 505). You can call between 8am and 8pm on Monday to Friday.

Vaccination Schedule JUST a day after Spanish President Pedro Sanchez an‐ nounced his ambitious vaccination schedule to the country, the European Commission threw cold water on his plans on Thursday, April 8, claiming that at this moment in time, they are not sure how many doses of the jab will be available in the third quarter. Mr Sanchez told the nation that they could expect some 87 million vaccines to arrive in Spain be‐ tween April and September, but EU bosses have revealed that this is by no means guaranteed. Mr Sánchez pointed out: “This means receiving 3.5 times more doses than in the first trimester.” When the 87 million doses arrive, Mr Sánchez promised that “any compatriot who wishes can be vaccinated in this period.” In his public address, Mr Sanchez boasted that Spain “has vaccination coverage of one dose in over 80s of 70.1 per cent,” while the average in the rest of Europe is 60 per cent. However, other data refutes the Prime Minister’s claim, with countries such as Serbia, Hungary and Chile having al‐ ready surpassed Spain’s vaccination rate for the first dose.

This time rather than Mallorca they chose a small village near Albox for the peace and serenity, but Emma was amazed at the amount of DJ work that she found and very quickly was kept busy not just at weekends. When she first started there was the need to transport cases full of vinyl records and turntables so her repertoire had to be fairly narrow and this was when she really concentrated on dance and house music. Now however, due to incredible advances in technology, she can cater for many different tastes and if a venue wants pop, rock, hits or Latin

THE ‘House’ music scene unlike many others, is very democratic and has no real barriers for female participants and this is underscored in a new book in which a host of different, influential women are interviewed. For four decades, Emma
Almeria-based DJ Emma Keen. music, then that is no problem and rather than start playing from a set list, she judges the reaction of the audience and chooses each track to suit. The lockdown hit her badly but she is now hosting two shows on the community based and expanding Almeria Radio which she can record at home but due to the ‘tech wizards’ who run the station, it is possible for direct interaction with listeners. As the State of Alarm begins to unwind, she is looking for-
ward to getting back on to the road and has a wide range of potential venues, from beach bars in Mojacar to clubs around the area and her favourite, a little bar in the middle of nowhere which she used to appear at weekly with an audience that ranged from 18 to 80. Turning to the book, Emma is flattered and amazed that she will appear alongside such female giants as Candi Staton, Barbara Tucker, Kym Sims and Kym Mazelle, but as one the earliest female house DJs,
there is no doubt that her inclusion is only right. ‘The Lady of the House’ is authored by Ian Snowball and Laila McKenzie, both accomplished journalists in the music field in their own rights and has a foreword by international DJ Carl Cox (one of Emma’s alltime heroes). The book will be a limitededition, luxury hardback, coffee-table style book, only available through Kickstarter and available to pre-order up until May 6. PRICES: Have hit expats, businesses and tourists. EXPATS in Spain are feeling the pinch after it emerged the price of petrol has risen by more than €10 for an average tank since last April. According to new figures, while the price of petrol has stayed steady over the past week, costs have risen by nearly 20 per cent in Spain since the same week last year, leaving the average tank of petrol costing more than €10 more. The figures also showed that in the last month, the price of petrol has gone up by 1.86 per cent, compared to the 0.94 per cent that the price of diesel has in‐ creased. The price hike has hit expats, business owners and tourists alike.

How Foreign Holidays Traffic Light System Will Work THE British Government’s Global Travel Taskforce hopes to resume international travel from May 17 at the earliest, and they have suggested using a traffic light system that will categorise countries based on their Covid-19 risk levels. It may be a few weeks yet before we know the exact date when trips abroad can take place, and which countries will be subject to the most relaxed measures. Here is how the foreign holidays traffic light system will reportedly operate: Green countries • People arriving in the UK from ‘green list’ countries will need to take a pre-departure test in that country • On or before the second day after arriving in the UK, they will need to take a PCR test • They will not need to quarantine on their return unless they receive a positive test • Test packages must be booked and paid for before travelling from a list of government-
approved providers Amber countries • People arriving from ‘amber list’ countries will have to quarantine for 10 days at home • They will have to take a predeparture test, then a PCR test on days two and eight • There will be an option for ‘test to release’ in which they can end self-isolation early if they test negative on day five by purchasing an extra PCR test • Test packages must be booked and paid for before travelling from a list of government-approved providers Red countries • Arrivals from ‘red list’ countries will have to quarantine for 10 days in a specific quarantine hotel • They will have to take a predeparture test, then PCR tests on day two and day eight • Passengers must book and agree to pay for a quarantine package before departing for the UK Green watchlist • This will identify countries
most at risk of moving from green to amber so travellers have some warning • However, the government ‘will not hesitate to act immediately should the data show that countries risk ratings have changed’ How the list will be decided • Countries in each category will be kept under review and the government will respond to data, focusing on variants of concern • Vaccination and infection rates, the prevalence of variants, a country’s genomic sequencing capacity and access to reliable scientific evidence will be considered • The restrictions will be formally reviewed on June 28 to see whether the measures could be relaxed, followed by reviews ‘no later than July 31 and October 1’ Passenger locator forms • The form - where arrivals must fill in their travel details, UK address, passport details, Covid test booking reference numbers and quarantine hotel invoice (if needed) - will be digitised ‘by autumn 2021’
Stricter rules for airlines breaching consumer rights • The Civil Aviation Authority will be given additional enforcement power to act on airlines that have breached consumer rights • A Covid-19 charter will be introduced from May 17, setting out what is required of passengers and what their rights will be What the government is still looking into • Ministers will work with the travel industry and private test providers to see how costs can be reduced ‘while ensuring travel is as safe as possible’ • This could include cheaper tests when returning home and they are looking into whether predeparture tests can be provided • A digital travel certification system is still being looked at and the Department for Transport is considering how Covid passports could help for countries using them • Work also continues to develop a system to facilitate travel certification for inbound travellers

Sun Exposure news ANOTHER reason to LOVE SPAIN! Read on to find out why a stroll along one of Spain’s beautiful beaches may be better for you than you thought. Sunlight causes the skin to release nitric oxide, which can reduce the ability of the coronavirus to replicate, according to a study from the University of Edinburgh. The research, which was published recently in the British Journal of Dermatology, found increased exposure to the sun’s rays - specifically UVA light was associated with reduced deaths from the virus. Researchers compared all recorded deaths from Covid-19 in the US from January to April 2020 with UV levels for 2,474 counties for the same time period. The reduction in risk of death from Covid-19 could not be explained by higher levels of vitamin D, experts said - it was more likely to be as a result of the sun’s UV rays. What is UVC? UVC, a relatively obscure

It is particularly good at destroying genetic material - whether in humans or viral particles. Luckily, most of us are unlikely to have ever encountered any. That’s because it’s filtered out by ozone in the atmosphere long before it reaches our fragile skin. Or that was the case, at least, until scientists discovered that they could harness UVC to kill microorganisms. Since the finding in 1878, artificially produced UVC has become a staple method of sterilisation - one used in hospitals, aeroplanes, offices, and factories every day. Crucially, it’s also fundamental
to the process of sanitising drinking water; some parasites are resistant to chemical disinfectants such as chlorine, so it provides a failsafe. Doesn’t sunlight create vitamin D also? As regards a lack of Vitamin D in our body, studies show very negative data. To begin with, lacking it exposes us even more to different types of infections that would decrease considerably if the levels of this vitamin were correct. There are already studies, carried out in 2007, that agree with those of the present and affirm that it produces protective effects against acute respiratory infections.

Flights Cancelled again BRITONS in Spain are voicing concerns after budget airline Jet2 announced it was cancelling flights and holidays until June 23. The airline said it was suspending flights until the end of June following Boris Johnson’s announcement over international travel plans, leaving some Britons in Spain voicing concern over trips being cancelled. According to the news, Jet2’s chief executive, Steve Heapy, says his company wants to offer holidays but it needs “more clarity” from the government to achieve this. He explained that those who have already got trips booked will be given a refund. He said: “Where customers yet to travel are affected by any programme changes, we will automatically cancel their booking with a full refund, and our team of travel experts will be in touch to help them to book their summer getaway for later in the year.” Speaking to the Euro Weekly News, owners of the Cuevas de Helena hotel in Benamaurel, Granada, said: “It is sad news but it does at least give clarity. We really feel for customers who had booked and had to cancel last year as well. “We have had one family cancel this morning after the Jet 2 announcement they were due to come in 2020 then rebooked for June 2021. “We are now wondering whether other airlines will do the same.”

The owners added: “People want to see their families too, it’s not just about tourism. “We would love for people to be able to fly from the UK so when Jet2 announced that it was sad news.” Jet2’s chief executive explained why the airline was cancelling flights until June 23. He said: “After several weeks exploring how to restart international travel, with substantial assistance and input from the industry, the framework lacks any rigorous detail about how to get international travel going again. In fact, the framework is virtually the same as six months ago. “Following the publication of the framework today, we still do not know when we can start to fly, where we can fly to and the availability and cost of testing. Rather than answering questions, the framework leaves everyone asking more. “We know how much our customers want
to get away to enjoy their well-deserved holidays. We have seen buoyant confidence levels from UK holidaymakers, as well as strong demand for our ATOL protected package holidays and leisure flights. “We are trying to run a business so that we can take customers away, but we need the government to provide us with clarity to achieve this.” The budget airline offers flights from the UK to destinations across Spain, including Malaga, Alicante, Mallorca, Almeria and Barcelona, leaving some Britons in Spain concerned that trips booked by family, friends and tourists will be delayed. Reacting to Jet2’s announcement, one Facebook user said: “Let’s hope the last half of the year is all go.” Customers with holidays booked to Spain also took to Jet2’s Facebook page to react to the news.
RIGHT TO VOTE: But it could cause problems. AS reported in London Loves Business this week, the British Government is planning on allowing more British expats the right to vote in UK elections, however, leading tax advisory Blick Rothenberg warns that this could come with a ‘sting in the tail.’ The government confirmed in March’s budget that British expats living abroad and who are not residents in the UK for tax purposes would be entitled to vote on an ‘indefinite basis’ in future UK elections. This is in contrast to the rule in 2002 when only non‐ residents who had lived overseas for 15 years or less still had the right to vote. A tax director at the firm, Robert Salter, said: “British expats overseas should consider carefully whether they wish to take advantage of this extended franchise be‐ cause it could cause problems in the future and mean that they are liable for UK taxes and in particular inheri‐ tance tax.
Food Prices Soaring FOOD prices are going up around the world and for many this could not come at a worse time as jobs for many people have been affected by the ongoing pandemic. Many have had to turn to food banks in order to survive already and as costs rise, more and more
people could be pushed into food poverty. Expats and Spaniards alike in Spain have seen costs rise recently and it was reported in January that Spain’s core inflation rate had risen by 0.6 per cent in comparison to the previous year, as
price rises in food, gas and electricity had a knock-on effect. Companies all over Europe and the US and Canada have come under increasing pressure as the global pandemic has disrupted supply chains, and transport and packaging costs have increased. According to reports suppliers are running out of ways to absorb cost increases, and these could be passed on more in the future. Some price increases may not be immediately apparent to consumers though, as it is predicted that supermarkets will reduce the number of special deals and multi-buy offers available. As the number of Coronavirus cases starts to increase after the Easter break, one factor that could dramatically affect food prices is the potential for local border closures. One concerned expat told EWN how during the pandemic and local border closures they had been forced to spend more as their local town did not have a large supermarket. In February it was reported that during the pandemic supermarkets had seen their takings increase by an extra € 3.1 billion.

IN what could be great news for many outpatients, Andalu‐ cian pharmacies are set to dispense hospital drugs. It is hoped that this new move will improve accessibility for both expats and Spaniards alike, as some people will be able to avoid hospital visits to pick up medicines. An agreement has been signed by the Andalucian Health Service (SAS) and the Andalucian Council of Official Associa‐ tions of Pharmacists (CACOF) which will enable pharmacies to dispense outpatient medicines which would normally on‐ ly be able to be picked up at a hospital pharmacy. A pilot is set to be carried out during 2021, which will al‐ low certain patients who have been prescribed medicines which would normally be dispensed by a hospital, to be picked up at an Andalucian pharmacy instead. This will only apply to certain hospitals to begin with though and prior authorisation will be needed from the hos‐ pital’s pharmacy service. Numerous patients have already tested out the service and found it to be extremely useful.

Soho Market Marbella, one woman’s response to lockdown FOR more than 12 years, Lara Gonzalez Navarro ran a very successful events company from her base in San Pedro de Alcantara and then the pan‐ demic struck. Whereas before, she had been kept busy with over 100 functions for weddings, commu‐
nions, New Year’s Eve parties and corporate events, she sud‐ denly found herself with a book full of cancellations. To make matters worse, the family that owned the building which she rented decided to sell it and she had to move all of her equipment out at fairly
short notice. As a single parent with two children, she needed an income and had a brainwave as she was walking around the parade of shops in Guadalmina where she saw that a large prominent prop‐ erty was available for rent. She had already seen that a number of smaller shops in Mar‐ bella Old Town had closed be‐ cause of the lack of business and realised that there were a num‐ ber of people in similar situations to her who had stock available but no outlet. Lara created a business plan and decided that if she was able to obtain the property and then rent out spaces to retailers there was an opportunity to create a successful business. It was a risk, but one which she decided was worth taking and thus Soho Market Marbella was born with its opening taking place in December of last year, just in time for the Christmas rush. salon and a small, intimate restaurant. There is a very positive, friend‐ ly feeling when you enter the store, there are regulars, who come for breakfast almost every day and those working there are equally happy to chat in both En‐ glish and Spanish. There is plenty of seating on the terrace as well as inside and there is a huge amount of free car parking and not only will
there be a barber’s shop there shortly, there’s even a free games arcade to keep the older children occupied. Current opening hours for the Soho Market Marbella are 9.30am to 10.30pm, seven days a week which gives an idea of how committed all of those in‐ volved with the project are to keep it buzzing and serving the local community. For Lara it was a brave ven‐ ture, but she has a very en‐ trepreneurial skill which told her that if she attracted a wide range of experienced sellers, then they would have their own clientele who would gravitate to the mar‐ ket and would then in all proba‐ bility become regular customers. For the stall holders, they have a one fee to pay which includes all overheads, so they know ex‐ actly where they stand and for Lara who now employs seven full time staff, the gamble has worked although she still hopes to resurrect her events business as well.

Blood Clot Expert UNIVERSITY of Reading blood clot expert, Professor Simon Clarke, has claimed that having the AstraZeneca jab is no riskier than pregnancy, the contraceptive pill, or going on a long‐haul flight, saying that in his estimation, it was not rational to refuse the vaccine, as there was a ‘vanishingly rare risk’ of a blood clot occurring. Mr Clarke told the press, “I don’t think it would be a rational decision because the risk of thrombosis is vanishingly small. Also, I’m not quite sure you can even de‐ termine yet from the vaccine what the risk is when the sample sizes are so far very small.” A spokesperson for the MHRA says that up to March 31, out of around 20 million first doses of the Astra Zeneca jab given across the UK, it had received 79 reports of blood clots, accompanied by low blood platelet count, and a total of 19 people have died out of those 79, although it has not been established what the cause was in ev‐ ery case. Of the 19 who died, three were under the age of 30, and the figures suggest that the risk of a rare blood clot in people after receiving the vaccine, is the equivalent to four out of every million.

IN a very welcome move, the third vice president and Minister of Labour and Social Economy, Yolan‐ da Diaz has announced that the temporary em‐ ployment regulation files (ERTE) will continue after May 31 “in a formula similar to the current one.” Back on January 19, the Executive Committee of the Spanish Confederation of Business Organisa‐ tions (CEOE) unanimously approved an extension of the scheme until the end of May. More than 3.5 million employees in Spain were
placed on the ERTE furlough scheme when the coronavirus pandemic hit, and Ms Diaz has praised companies for their solidarity and refusal to give up through such difficult times. In other positive news for those in receipt of an ERTE payment, Spain’s Ministry of Finance announced that, in the coming days, a new regulation will be finalised that will allow people affected to split their person‐ al income tax payments over a period of six months without accruing additional interest.

Covid sniffer dog AFTER months of training, the German Shepherd ‘Roco’ responds by sitting down when he smells Covid-19 on samples used in training. Trained by the Spanish Army’s canine unit, Roco has been sniffing out the killer virus for the past month with a 90 per cent efficiency in negative samples and 75 per cent in positive samples. Thanks to him, a project which was going to be shelved has been reactivated. Colonel María Isabel de Martín, head of the Defence Military Canine Centre, said Roco “detects the positives and discriminates the negatives perfectly,” and, as a result of Roco’s success, revealed she had put her own working dog in the programme seven months ago though with no results so far. She explained that viruses themselves do not smell, but according to several studies the disease produces a molecule that could be the one that is detected by the dogs.

Duke Of Edinburgh’s Funeral BUCKINGHAM PALACE announced on Saturday April 10 that the Duke of Ed i n b u r g h ’ s c e r e m o n i a l royal funeral will take place at 3pm, on Satur‐ day, April 17, at Windsor Castle, in St George’s Chapel, with a minute’s national silence being ob‐ served as it begins. This final farewell to Prince Philip, who passed away on Friday April 9, aged 99, is guaranteed to be like no other royal fu‐ neral the country has ever seen, as the Queen and other members of the roy‐ al family attend all wear‐ ing face masks, and having to social distance, while following the coronavirus guidelines. The funeral will be tele‐ vised, and will take place entirely within the grounds of Windsor Cas‐ tle, but all public ele‐ ments have been can‐ celled, said a Palace spokesman, with it also said that Prince Philip had asked for a low‐key funer‐
al. Prime Minister Boris Johnson gave his recom‐ mendation regarding na‐ tional mourning, to the Queen, which was accept‐ ed, with a period of mourning to run from Fri‐ day April 9, up to and in‐ cluding the day of Prince Philip’s funeral, but, true to form, according to a se‐ nior royal official, the Queen said engagements will continue appropriate to the circumstances. A senior Palace official said that a specially modi‐ fied Land Rover that the Duke helped to design will transport the coffin from Windsor Castle to the chapel, with the Prince of Wales and senior royals following behind it, on foot, but within the coro‐ navirus restrictions. Only 30 mourners are allowed to attend, which gives the Palace another headache, over who will be invited, but it is ex‐ pected to be Philip’s chil‐ dren, grandchildren, and
close family, with a Palace spokesman saying that the Duchess of Sussex has been advised by her doc‐ tor not to travel, after Meghan had apparently tried to travel, but did not receive the medical clear‐ ance to board a plane.

2nd Mysterious Monolith LOCALS have been shocked after a mysterious monolith appeared in Catalonia in the town of Aiguamúr‐ cia, north of Tarragona on Saturday April 10. The town is not used to this attention, as they have a population of less than 1,000 people and the sleepy town is best known for its 12th century Santes Creus monastery. It was only last year that mono‐ liths mysteriously started to appear in the Utah desert and around the world. The new Catalonian monolith is said to be around three metres tall and even has Egyptian hieroglyphics engraved on it. Mayor Dolors Palma spoke of the monolith and explained that, “Unlike the others, this one is engraved with Egyptian hieroglyph‐ ics which we have been told mean ‘the game has begun’.” In March a mystery monolith turned up on a beach in Girona, on the Costa Brava. The metal mono‐ lith, more than two metres tall, and similar to the one which appeared back in November 2020 in the Utah desert and several others since then, was spotted on Sa Conca beach in the town of Castell‐Platja d’Aro, on Tuesday, March 30.

Expats have been reporting that they are confused over which passports are now needed to allow pets to travel with their owners between the UK and Spain. After the British Embassy in Madrid issued advice on its Facebook page over UK and EU pet passports, and which were now valid, a number of users still reported confusion over the issue. The embassy said: “Pet passports issued in Spain or another EU member state continue to be valid for travel to Great Britain and the EU. “If you have a UK pet passport you will need to update your documentation.”

Raised Concerns STEP BACKWARDS: Russia not moving forwards.
BRITISH expats living in Spain have raised concerns over the giant step backwards that Russia has taken toward their LGBTQ+ citizens. Whilst Spain continues to show its progressive nature towards LGBTQ rights, including the recent proposals to issue fines of up to €150,000 to anyone found promoting gay conversion therapy, Russia seems be going backwards in time. Spain’s Ministry of Equality has recently drafted a law which is considered a move towards “real and effective equality.” The new law would see hefty fines given out to those who provide and promote gay conversion therapy. Conversion therapy is defined as ‘the practice of aversion, conversion or counter-conditioning methods, programmes and therapies,’ in the draft law. One expat living in Spain told E W N how they have found Spain to be “inclusive and welcoming wherever in Spain they have visited.” The reader went on to tell EWN how Russia’s new laws are a “giant step backwards” and that this risks members of Russia’s LGBTI community “fearing for their lives” and seeking to leave the country out of fear.

Olivia’s in La Cala de Mijas looking to the future with confidence IT was only in 2015 that TV celebrity and restaurateur Elliott Wright opened Olivia’s in La Cala de Mijas but since then it has be‐ come an icon of cool on the Costa del Sol. Committed to his restaurant, Elliott has kept it open all during the pandemic, except when required to close under the State of Alarm, but with the lack of tourists who make up a percentage of the business, he has had a chance to consider the future. No‐one knows when the airlines will be operating again at full strength and in the meantime, there is still a vast untapped local market who could and should be enjoying all that Olivia’s has to offer. Since opening, it has welcomed people from all over the world, but the majority of customers have been from the UK and Ire‐ land and have tended to enjoy a good night out with some top music. Elliott recognises that not everyone wants that and has therefore decided to follow a slightly different path and to that end has engaged a completely new team of experts who have many years of experience in gourmet food, fine wines and corporate marketing so that Olivia’s will be looking to appeal to a wider audience. There is a new Executive Chef, Ryan Mur‐ phy who has not only worked in Michelin Star restaurants in New York but was also Head Chef at the Savoy in London when it reopened so his pedigree is second to none. Ryan says that he wants to move the menu to a new fresh look with a Mediter‐ ranean style using both French and Spanish inspirations to offer a number of healthy op‐ tions with less, pepper, salt and sugar. In order to attract new customers and to please regulars, the restaurant will be offer‐ ing special set lunch menus with two courses priced at €18.95 and three courses at €23.95. On Friday afternoons, there will be a tapas wind down with a free tapa with your first drink and a wide selection of tapas trays at very special prices, so when you take into ac‐ count that Happy Hour runs from 5pm to 7pm, it’s a great opportunity to see in the weekend. The new Director of Operations, Stefan Guicheteau arrives from France via the UK having a huge wealth of experience in all as‐ pects of catering, having helped launch NOBU in London as well as opening many of their European outlets. Stefan has a great knowledge of caviar and wine and whilst creating a new wine list, based strongly on Spanish wines, he will also be including a range at different prices from around the world as well as a selection of

great sherries which he believes are still un‐ dervalued. You use many of your senses to enjoy both food and drink, so it is logical to intro‐ duce the Olivia’s pairing menu which he will create to highlight the way in which a partic‐ ular wine can heighten the enjoyment of food. Completing the new team is Michelle Ross who has a long experience of corporate mar‐ keting with such companies as Nike Europe and Sony which she will be bringing to Olivia’s as Director of Marketing and Sales. This is a change encouraged by evolution rather than revolution, so weekends will still see plenty of music, but weekdays will be a little more restrained but with a promise of quality food, great service and sensible prices every day. Elliott will still bring his immeasurable charm to the operation and once the team are happy with the innovations, then his next project will be to open Olivia’s in Ali‐ cante.

Predicting Breast Cancer A BREAKTHROUGH study of thousands of women in Spain has reportedly developed a model that is capable of predicting a person’s chances of getting breast cancer some 20 years in advance. The research team from the Hospital del Mar in Barcelona announced on Thursday, April 8, that their new system can ac‐ curately predict the risks of a woman developing breast cancer at two year intervals over a period of 20 years. The findings, which were published in the Plos One journal, are a vast im‐ provement on previous models, which could predict cancer occurring over a 10‐year period. The study, which looked at data from almost 122,000 wom‐ en between the ages of 50 and 69, found four main factors in determining the risk of developing breast cancer. Researchers determined that the biggest factor was a previous history of the disease within her family, followed by the person’s age, history of benign breast diseases and breast calcifications. “At the same time, women with lower risk could go even longer between screenings,” said researcher Dr Marta Roman.

Climate Change Law THE Congress of Deputies has approved for the first time in Spain a new Law on Climate Change and Energy Transition on Thursday, April 8 as a means of reiterating its commitment to combating global warming. One of the major assurances Spain has given internationally with this new regulation is to achieve climatic neutrality by 2050, thus almost eliminating its use of fossil fuels. In order to meet this ambitious target, the Spanish government has set various goals along the way, such as ensuring that by 2030, 74 per cent of the electricity used in this country will come from renewable sources. In addition, by 2030 Spain has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 23 per cent compared with 1990. This will be periodically reviewed, with the government hopeful that the targets can even be increased; the first review is scheduled for 2023, according to Spanish press. The law, which has remained in the pipeline for almost a decade much to the consternation of environmentalists, was finally passed with the vast majority of political parties in support of the measures. Only Vox opposed it. The regulations will now be out to the Senate, and if approved, which they are widely expected to be, could be implemented by May.
THE DGT has come forward to clarify the rules on wearing masks in cars, after rumours circulating that not doing so could result in a fine. We have previously reported on this subject, but the General Directorate of Traffic has now come forward to clarify that these rumours are incorrect and that not wearing a mask in a vehicle is not a punishable act. The D G T has shared a statement on their social networks explaining that ‘the use of the mask is a matter of public health’ and a sanitary measure, which the DGT does not have any rights to enforce. For this reason, its nonuse ‘is not a traffic offence’ so it is not punishable by a fine or losing points on your driver’s licence. It is, however, mandatory to wear a mask on public transport and when taking a taxi and will incur a €100 fine for not complying, as outlined on the website of the Presidency of the Government.

Cybersecurity Warning CYBERSECURITY experts are urging people to create harder‐ to‐crack passwords after new re‐ search found 15 per cent of British people use their pet’s name as a log‐in. Tech sites in Spain have also warned resi‐ dents NOT to use town, city and region names like Marbella, Malaga and Mijas, as an exam‐ ple, because hackers are well aware of their usage and it makes it much easier to crack someone’s password. The top of the list of common‐ ly used passwords was 123456, appearing more than 23 million times. The second‐most popular string, 123456789, was not much harder to crack, while oth‐ ers in the top five included ‘qw‐ erty’, ‘password’ and 1111111. The most common name to be used in passwords was Ash‐ ley, followed by Michael, Daniel, Jessica and Charlie. When it comes to Premier League foot‐ ball teams in guessable pass‐ words, Liverpool are ‘champi‐ ons’ with Chelsea second. It is important to remember that the same cybersecurity warning applies to family names
and birthdays, all of which can also often be gleaned from so‐ cial media. Make a list of your passwords and keep them safe. Also change your passwords as often as you can.

In favour of digital passports NINE out of 10 Spaniards said in a survey that they would use digital health passports to travel, while seven in 10 said that they would store their health data digitally if it meant less interaction with people and quicker passage through airports. The survey was commissioned by the travel booking group Amadeus and highlighted Spanish participants’ willingness to use digital health technology following the Covid pandemic, as well as collecting information on their concerns about how, when and with whom the personal information will be shared. More than 35 per cent of participants were concerned about their health information being hacked and lack of transparency or control over where the information would be shared. As the travel industry looks for ways to get flights running again and with the upcoming summer dependent on tourism in many places, there is an increasing call for sharing traveller health data and making mobility more flexible. The European Union hopes to have its own ‘Digital Green Pass’ ready in time for summer and IATA, a global airline body, hopes to roll out a similar Covid-19 pass this coming spring.

How many peanuts cause a reaction? A NEW study has attempted to discover how much peanut protein is needed to cause an allergic reaction in people who do not have a severe allergy The study, by Dr Lynne Haber, senior toxicologist at the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine, published in the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology, showed the ‘trigger dose,’ that is the amount of peanut protein that causes a reaction in a percentage of peanutsensitive patients. Some 481 patients were given increasingly large doses of peanut protein, in a controlled manner, until they had an allergic reaction. The trigger dose in 1 per cent of patients was 0.052 milligrams of peanut protein, about the weight of a single grain of salt. The dose that caused the reaction in 5 per cent of the patients was 0.49 milligrams, the equivalent to the weight of a grain of sugar.

Better cancer treatment NEW guidance from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on the procurement of radiotherapy equipment could improve access to life-saving cancer treatment. The publication aims to ensure that equipment is appropriate to each country and to the health facility contexts, as well as making sure that treatment is delivered safely, that quality of the treatment is maintained, and that services are sustainable. More than 50 per cent of patients with cancer require radiotherapy and is frequently used to treat breast, cervical, colorectal, and lung cancer. However, one-third of countries still do not have radiotherapy available, out of which 28 are in Africa, said May Abdel-Wahab, Director of the IAEA’s Division of Human Health. Radiotherapy is just one element in the management of cancer, others include diagnostic imaging, laboratory testing, pathology, surgery, systemic treatment and palliative care.

SCIENTIFIC research aimed at curing diseases has been betting on increasingly personalised and individualised treatments for many years. In second place was a regular sized cup of black coffee, increasing productivity by 75 per cent; and in third place came iced coffee with 67 per cent. Surprisingly, decaf came fifth, with a 50 per cent productivity increase, comparable with espresso macchiato
and latte. Meanwhile, coming at the bottom of the table were the frappuccino, with just a 14 per cent increase and participants even saying that it was too heavy to concentrate and made them feel like napping afterwards, BrewSmartly.com reported. Second from the bottom came Irish coffee, with a 17 per cent increase in the tasks completed after consuming it, but considering it contains Irish whiskey it’s not surprising and the
whipped that cream topping with nutmeg make it tasty, but it does not increase productivity. Also with just 17 per cent was the cappuccino, and in third place, the café au lait with 25 per cent, this is dark coffee with hot milk. Its close relative, the flat white, which is an espresso with hot milk, did much better with an increase of 33 per cent. So, now you know what you should be drinking if you want to have a more productive day.

Boost to the environment MORRISONS has pledged to be the first supermarket to be completely supplied by ‘net zero’ carbon British farms by 2030, five years ahead of the market. Over the next nine years, the supermarket chain has said that it will work with its 3,000 farmers and grow‐ ers to produce affordable net zero carbon meat, fruit and vegetables. Morrisons expects that the first products to reach net zero carbon status will
be eggs as early as 2022, followed by lamb, fruit, vegetables, pork and beef in the years to follow. UK agriculture currently accounts for 10 per cent of all UK greenhouse gas emis‐ sions, with new research revealing that two‐thirds of people consider the envi‐ ronmental impact of the food they eat. The National Farmers Union has asked farmers to work towards a 2040 net zero goal, and other super‐

markets are working to‐ wards 2035. As it is British farming’s biggest supermarket cus‐ tomer, Morrisons is unique‐ ly placed to reach this goal five years ahead of indus‐ try. In addition, it has con‐ firmed that it will remove all plastic carrier bags from its stores over the next year and will switch from offer‐ ing plastic ‘bags for life’ to a paper alternative, saying the move will make it the
first UK supermarket to stop using plastic carrier bags completely. It will take around a year to implement this particular change, so once movement between provinces here in Spain is again allowed, British visitors to its very successful store in Gibraltar can expect to see a number of changes to help the envi‐ ronment, but remember, there is currently a ban on taking dairy and meat prod‐ ucts back into Spain.
Funerals in the Covid era
Who is responsible? We purchased a two‐bedroom ground floor apartment in Spain in 2005. We asked our solicitor to check that everything was in order and were told everything was okay. Soon afterwards the owners of the property above us informed us that one bedroom and the kitchen of our apartment were built in part of their garden. Our solicitor said that everything would be okay and no action was required. Our neigh‐ bours have gone to court to demolish the kitchen and bedroom, which were built by the previous owner. The solicitor does not seem interested in contacting the previous owner so all the expense is coming to us. THE Spanish Ministry of the Interior has agreed that all registered participants at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona may enter Spain despite current health restrictions. This means that ex‐ hibitors, attendees or spon‐ sors from outside of the Eu‐ ropean Union will be able to fly to Barcelona from such countries as China, the UK and USA without fear of be‐ ing turned away at the air‐ port. Currently, regulations prevent entry to Spain for anyone from a country out‐ side the EU due to the pan‐ demic, except in the case of highly qualified workers. Therefore, in accordance with this rule, international organisers GSMA (Global System for Mobile Commu‐ nications) and the Ministry
of the Interior have come to an agreement that identi‐ fies all those attending the MWC within this category so that they can attend the congress. Clearly the Spanish Gov‐ ernment is well aware of the international prestige that this exhibition brings to the country and is anxious to ensure that after last year’s cancellation, the Congress goes ahead be‐ tween June 28 and July 1 this year. To some extent, they may be fighting a losing battle as a number of the tech giants such as Google and Intel have decided to cancel, joining Ericsson, Facebook, Google, Intel, Nokia, Oracle and Sony have already an‐ nounced that they have withdrawn. To try to combat this, the
Co-op profits up THE Co-op Group in the UK has announced that it will repay £15.5 million (€17 million) of the Covid relief it received from the government’s furlough scheme. It has had a good 2020 with a rise in turnover to £11.5 billion (€12.7 billion) and profits after tax and provisions also up at £77 million (€85 million) although that is only a tiny percentage against turnover. The Co-op will not however return business rates support as it considered that this was given in “good faith” to help support its services including funerals and did not ever expect to have to pay it back.

Hope of course springs eternal
LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT MILLIONS of words have of course been written about the Duke of Edinburgh and his sad passing, but as an unashamed and staunch royalist I feel it perfectly reasonable to put in my own three penneth. Of all the Royals the Duke has always been a favourite of mine. He was obviously a man of integrity with very strong principles, but although I think this sometimes made him something of a feared disciplinarian, particularly among his male offsprings, he always appeared to be fair minded and caring. Despite the almost treasonably incorrect, Crown series, the vast majority of us have no idea what goes on behind ‘Buck House’ doors, but in the reports we actually have been a party to over the years, I concede he may have erred a bit when a young man’s fantasy succumbs to philandering! However in public he never brought the Royal family into disrepute, he certainly didn’t ‘rebel’ against the tradition and heritage he married into (unlike others I could mention!).
PRINCE PHILIP: A favourite of mine.
Despite protocol asserting he always stand a pace or two behind the Queen, which I’m sure he hated, he was always there in support ‐ reiterating the old, slightly amended adage that behind every successful Queen stands a strong man! He was obviously the backbone of the whole family and hopefully his strength, dedication and leadership, will have been passed on to his decedents (hope of course springs eternal!). Not suffering fools or sycophants gladly he often came out with remarks that could be somewhat scathing! I particularly like the one where he was asked after arriving at an airport how his flight had been? ‘Have you ever flown?’ he asked the irritating toady. ‘Why yyes’ replied the man. ‘’Well it was like that’ snapped the Duke. Bit hurtful, but pretty typical I would have thought. My absolute favourite of course was the well‐chronicled reply he gave when asked a question about his daughter Princess Anne. ‘If it doesn’t fart and eat hay, she’s not interested’ he retorted. Prince Philip was a complex and truly
exceptional man, who will be sadly missed by millions, but most of all by his dear wife of 73 years. Let our thoughts be with the Queen in these sad times of great loss. Couldn’t let this piece go by without a mention of the despicable duo Winge and Minge. I don’t think you have to study rocket science to realise who sanctioned the cold and arrogant ‘tribute’ to the Duke they posted on social media. I’m sure by the time you read this it will have been announced that megalomaniac Megan’s doctors have recommended she doesn’t travel at this time. The fact that even later into her last pregnancy, she actually travelled over 11,000 miles to attend her LA baby shower will not of course go unnoticed by the general public. Just how stupid does this arrogant woman think we all actually are? As for Harry ‐ well he’s just about as far removed from his Grandfather’s legacy as a Grandson could possibly be. In a move that will see more of the sec‐ tor enter the era of digital transformation, drivers will be able to print their own green cards, with black and white prints on standard A4 paper. This change has been driven within the decision of the Council of Bureaux, the organisation acting for the protection of cross‐border road traffic and coordinating the activities of the different EU mem‐ bers of the Green Card system, to check the validity of Third Party Liability Motor Insurance through a new centralised single platform. Now, using advanced security measures, its cen‐ tralised web platform will allow insurers of its mem‐ ber countries to generate ‘QR‐coded’ Green Cards, which will then be sent to policy holders as down‐ loadable PDFs. So, these documents no longer need to be printed on the traditional, green‐ coloured paper and as such, the traditional Green Card may simply become black and white. These changes mean that when you are driving in a Bureaux member country, the authorities will be able to check automatically, through this plat‐ form, if a vehicle is duly insured. WELL, DID YOU FALL FOR ANY OF THEM TOO? at midnight. Some rather bizarre require‐ ments were listed as desirable, including an ability to write ‘in mumbo‐jumbo.’ Those past decades must have been the last days of innocence. What was stated in the papers was generally taken to be gospel. Nobody was looking for the spoof article. Truth, after all, was sacred. In subsequent years, readers have become too canny to be taken in easily, and front‐page spoofs are of‐ ten all too blindingly obvious. Although this year’s had the advantage that recent political news is almost too bizarre to accept as gen‐ uine. Take, for instance, all the fake news stories during Donald Trump’s term in office which read more like April Fool’s jokes. Or ‘alterna‐ tive facts’ as his spin doctors spun them. I mean, stories like he’s still refusing to accept the election result. No, hang on, that is true!

I don’t understand Bitcoin MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I’V E never really understood Bitcoin. How can something you can’t see, feel or know where it comes from be worth so much real money now? And, to be honest, I’m quite happy with my ignorance. I know one Bitcoin is now ‘worth’ about €50k. I t seems to me that the people earning the most are the cybercriminals. There’s only 21 million Bitcoin in circulation and some of those have been lost forever because people have forgotten or lost their passwords which makes theirs worthless. But here’s the scenario that makes them the most dangerous. Imagine going to your car, and finding that you are unable to unlock the doors or start the engine. Then you notice a message on your ‘phone. It’s a ransom note indicating that your car has been locked down and taken hostage. You are required to send Bitcoin to an unknown address if you want to release your car. Sound crazy? It shouldn’t. According to
security experts this scenario is not an impossible situation. Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are fuelling a wave of ransomware attacks to the tune of $1.4 billion in the U S . Hackers encrypt the victim’s data and then require the victim to pay a fee in Bitcoin or certain other cryptocurrencies to obtain the decryption key needed to release the data. M ost ransomware attacks start as phishing emails. Hackers bombard hospitals, big corporations, universities and even cities. The University of California San Francisco paid hackers $1.14 million in Bitcoin after a ransomware attack. T hat’s a shed load of dosh and the thieves got away with it and it’s only going to get worse. I read that one hospital client received ransom notes from two distinct ransom crews that had infiltrated the hospital’s computer systems. The hackers had auctioned off access to the hospital twice! The criminals were in-fighting over who would get paid first! Guess what - most of it is coming from Russia and China, there’s a surprise! Toxic cocktail awaits retirement WE are all living longer, but the quality of that life is not as good, as unhealthy lifestyles now mean today’s youth can expect to spend their retirement in poor health. Obesity, lack of exercise and smoking are cited as the main problems leading to what experts are calling a ‘toxic cocktail’ of back pain, diabetes and dementia. With women expected to live to an average age of 83 and men until 79, people can expect to spend those last two decades suffering from poor health.
RETIREMENT: Rather than being a fun and frivolous time, can actually be just as stressful as working. Public Health England said a report found only 57 per cent of English adults carry out the recommended 150 minutes of weekly exercise and 29 per cent do less than half an hour. Two in every three adults are now also overweight or obese. A report has also shown that retirement, rather than being a fun and frivolous time, can actually be just as stressful as working, particularly for those leaving lower-paid positions as they struggle with the pressure of making ends meet on their pension.

with finances thinking about what friends and family may actually need is important too. Whilst it’s nice to give a glam‐ ourous gift perhaps pre‐paying a family member’s phone bill for the month would actually be a better gift. Helping peo‐ ple alleviate stress and worry , give the gift of peace of mind through these difficult times. Choosing to spend your money locally will really make a difference in the recovery of the local economy. When we buy local, our money stays local, and it strengthens the local economy in two ways. Money circulating through the local economy benefits ev‐ eryone who is a part of each transaction. For example, let’s look at a local farmer growing produce. First, they sell to a local
restaurant, which in turn pre‐ pares the fresh produce and sells it to local customers. The farmer pays its local employ‐ ees and the restaurant uses revenue from sales to buy supplies from a neighbour‐ hood hardware store. This example illustrates how the recirculation of money in the local economy leads to a
stronger financial foundation for our neighbours and com‐ munities. Buying local also fuels new employment and job opportu‐ nities for people within our community. Studies show, locally owned businesses employ more peo‐ ple per unit of sales and retain more employees over time.

MARBELLA MOMENTS BY NICOLE KING I HAVE two special Lucys in my life, one of whom I call ‘Book Lucy’; be‐ cause she loves books. She is one of the most ‘read’ people I’ve ever come across, perhaps the up‐ side of having time off due to health issues; always that yang as they say. Her positive attitude and love of life make for a delightful personality and her passion to explore the world, as unveiled through others’ eyes in their manuscripts, a treat to be shared. Radically different yet again is Lucy’s third choice; originally written in Russian: Death and The Penguin by Andrey Kurkov. It would seem that Lucy struck up quite a relationship with one of the main characters, Misha ‐ the Penguin ‐ and is now look‐ ing to adopt one for herself. She refers to this book as ‘different’ and very convincing. I love Lucy’s take on what she reads and the variety of topics, which I’m sure you will also thoroughly enjoy, ei‐ ther just by hearing Lucy talk about them or then actually reading them for yourself too. If you’re an author, let us know, as Lucy would be happy to read and review it for the show. I personally never know what to choose when it comes to picking up a book, which is why it’s so nice to have friends that can guide me. Lately I’m quite happy just with their synopsis; my own personalised mix of ‘cliff notes and audiobook.’ I know however that many of you will value the tips as to what could be your next good read, so I hope Lucy’s picks appeal.

Toyota Camry causes surprise! ROAD TEST by Mark Slack IT’S one of those cars that many will know but few consider and it’s one of those cars that has re‐ liability at its core. Well it’s a Toyota! The Camry is a very stylish looking car and during my time several people stopped to express surprise that it was a Toyota. Most
thought it looked too up‐ market and expensive! While not selling in anything like high num‐ bers here, unlike in the US where it is hugely popular, the Camry is a car that deserves greater appreciation. It may not carry a premium badge but it looks and feels very premium and there’s a solidity that almost wouldn’t be amiss in a German badged saloon,
plus there’s that enviable reputation for reliability. Priced from €37,991 (£32,260) there are two versions and both utilise the same 2.5‐litre four‐ cylinder petrol electric hybrid with CVT automat‐ ic transmission. Standard fare is good with leather upholstery, adaptive cruise control, electrically adjustable and heated seats, dual zone air con‐ ditioning, auto lights with high beam assist, auto
wipers, powered and heated door mirrors, Bluetooth and navigation all included on the lead‐ in model. On the road the 2.5‐ litre engine is a smooth performer and although as with every CVT there’s a rise in revs under hard acceleration, the Camry does things with little fuss or audible intrusion. It doesn’t handle as well as a premium sporting sa‐ loon, but then you would‐ n’t expect it to, nonethe‐ less it acquits itself remarkably well. Decent
mpg, hybrid tech to charge the battery and a comfortable interior all go to make the Camry a sensible choice and a nice place to be on any jour‐ ney. The Camry costs rough‐ ly the same as an entry level BMW 3‐Series sa‐ loon and you get better kit, more space and ar‐ guably more exclusivity given how few Camrys are likely to be sold. One of the downsides is you’ll have higher depreciation, and the Camry won’t im‐ press those who value
badge above all else. What this means in prac‐ tice is that the Camry doesn’t have the premi‐ um pedigree we Brits love in our cars. However, those who dismiss the Camry as a posh Uber are missing the point, not least Mercedes Benz are taxis all over the world and still produce high end premium cars. The Camry has a style that belies its lack of pre‐ mium badging and I would happily have one in the garage as my daily driver.

Climate neutral electricity VOLVO CARS’ manufacturing plant in Daqing, China is now powered by 100 per cent climate neutral electricity following in the footsteps of the company’s other large Chinese manufacturing plant in Chengdu, which reached the same milestone last year. With the addition of Daqing, Volvo Cars’ global manufacturing network is now powered by close to 90 per cent climate neutral electricity, an important step to‐ wards the company’s goal of making its manufacturing opera‐ tions climate neutral by 2025. Going forward, the Daqing plant in Heilongjiang province will be powered by electricity gener‐ ated from biomass (83 per cent) and wind power (17 per cent), which is estimated to bring down the plant’s annual CO2 emissions by around 34,000 tonnes. More specifically, the biomass power plants that supply the Daqing site are using locally and sustainably‐sourced agricultural and forestry residues. “For us at Volvo Cars, sustain‐ ability is as important as safety,” said Javier Varela, Senior Vice‐ President for Industrial Opera‐ tions and Quality. “To achieve our ambitious cli‐
mate targets, tackling emissions from our manufacturing network is crucial and I am very pleased that Daqing is now powered by 100 per cent climate neutral elec‐ tricity.” Apart from the Daqing mile‐ stone, Volvo Cars has also made further progress in emission re‐ duction around its China plants. It has been in close contact with its local suppliers in recent months, encouraging them to fol‐ low suit and switch to 100 per cent climate neutral power. The response thus far has been ‘very positive.’ For Volvo Cars to achieve its target of climate neutral manu‐ facturing operations by 2025, it needs access to climate neutral electricity and heating. Achieving this target requires Volvo Cars to find local partners in government and business that support development of sustain‐ able alternatives. “We can only achieve our cli‐ mate action targets by working together with our suppliers,” said Varela. “We are encouraged by the support we have received so far in China and aim to be a benchmark of sustainability for its manufacturing industry.”

Medal Gained A SPANISH Olympic athlete has finally gained her rightful bronze medal after doping allegations from the London Olympics were upheld. As many expats and Spaniards alike may remember, the Olympic Games were over‐ shadowed for Russia, with dop‐ ing allegations. Spain’s Ruth Beitia, from Cantabria, has now been named as the only Spanish athlete ever to have won two Olympic medals. She has now gained her rightful second Olympic medal after Russia’s Svetlana Shkoli‐ na’s suspension was upheld. The Spanish athlete had origi‐ nally finished fourth behind Shkolina at the Olympics in Lon‐ don, but the Russian athlete was suspended for suspected dop‐ ing. In total 11 Russian athletes who appeared at the London Olympics were suspended due to doping suspicions. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has now upheld the Russian athlete’s suspension and the Spanish athlete has been confirmed as bronze
