SUPPORTING EACH OTHER

THERE is no doubt that when a famous celebrity gets involved in supporting a charity then dona­ tions increase as does the publici­ ty. Sports stars, actors, comedians, musicians and even politicians play their part in helping to keep funds flowing into the coffers of so many charities. In Marbella, the Council is par­ ticularly well­known for its finan­ cial support of all types of different charities and those funds are so badly needed, especially at a time when it has been increasingly diffi­ cult to run normal fundraisers. Even now though, with so many restrictions on events and restaurants having to close by 6pm, people all over the Costa are still doing their bit to help. A per­ fect example are the Food Fairies who are determined to raise funds in order to not only feed those in need, but also to ensure that every vulnerable child has a Christmas present. Companies have been fantastic in donating gifts for raffles, for ex­ ample, the Positively Blue charity which is now holding events dur­ ing December and are sponsored by Nero Premium Vodka. Golfers are fantastic supporters with huge amounts of money raised for charities such as Concor­ dia, Debra Butterfly Children and Cudeca in Benalmadena. We have seen popular celebri­ ties such as Ronan Keating and Antonio Banderas perform on the Costa to show their support and it does seem that there really is no limit to people’s goodwill from the most famous to children who want to do their bit to help. It is difficult to mention every charity across the region, but there is Age Care, Age Concern, Adana, Triple A, La Cala de Mijas Lions, Caritas, Red Cross, Rotary Club and so many more that raise funds for animals, cancer victims, children, the elderly and to a great extent, the British can take the plaudits for introducing charity shops to the Costa del Sol. All of these and so many more charities need to keep raising funds and the other problem that

has arisen with the pandemic, apart from the difficulty in holding large events is the fact that so many people have been affected financially by loss of work which means that some can no longer afford to support charities and others are now needing assis­ tance from groups such as Collec­ tive Calling. One charity that has benefited from celebrity support in a real way is ARCH, the Andalucian Res­ cue Centre for Horses and Don­ keys, which has been saving ani­ mals from abuse, for almost 12

years and this year has been par­ ticularly challenging for them as with fundraising events mainly cancelled, the charity is relying heavily on the generosity of their supporters. Among these are Victoria and

Cristina Iglesias, long­time horse lovers and proficient horsewomen who are the twin daughters of Julio Iglesias. They arranged a visit to the rescue centre in Alhaurin el Grande around a year ago, since when they have been enthusiastic

followers and generous donors. This year the girls went one step further, offering to foster one of the rescues over the summer, in order to help train her with a view to finding her a permanent home. The horse they chose, a 12­

year­old mare known as Moni, had been at the centre for several months. Neglected and virtually abandoned, she was tied to a tree on waste ground near Malaga. She was also heavily pregnant. and as the weather worsened, she gave birth to a small colt foal in torrential rain. Mother and baby thrived over the months that followed and once Lucky was weaned, ARCH were looking to rehome Moni, who needed to regain her figure and fitness after maternity leave. So, she went to the Iglesias sta­ bles where the girls gave her care and attention and they fell in love with her gentle and sensitive na­ ture and also discovered that she had a talent for jumping. It was not long before they decided to keep her and renamed her Zaza! Whilst few charities will ever say that they have enough funds, they are not greedy and many in­ volved give their time for free in order to help support their com­ munity or animals in need, so all of them do welcome whatever can be spared, be it time, commit­ ment, funds or donations to their charity shops.

THE city of Estepona has of­ fered to pay for the funeral of the 19­year­old victim who was stabbed on Novem­ ber 18 on Avenida de las Acacias in Estepona. The young man was attacked at 2.30pm over an alleged traf­ fic dispute; after stabbing the man in the heart the two assailants fled the scene in a high­end white Mercedes.

Stab victim funeral On Friday, November 20 the city council contacted the victim’s family to ‘offer them the help they need’ in relation to ‘burial expenses.’ So far there have been no arrests, but police have im­ pounded a foreign registered car.

Residents of the Nueva Atalaya­Diana neighbour­ hood were shocked by the attack, with one neighbour describing the victim as a young man who “grew up here, humble and super devoted to the football team, much loved and well

known.” Friends, relatives and neighbours have also offered their support, with the San Cristóbal de Estepona Neigh­ bourhood Association setting up collection points for do­ nations at five different points in the community, in­ cluding the Cancelada Insti­ tute where the young man was studying.

Is that fair game? IN the run­up to Christmas all businesses no matter the prod­ uct they sell work extra hard to provide their services to the public, and us the general public usually rely on late night shopping to get everything done around working hours. This year things will obviously be slightly different with Covid restrictions closing businesses early, throwing late night shopping out of the window and in effect forcing peo­ ple off the high street and into the hands of online giants. However, rather bizarrely, toy shops may stay open until 8pm. How is that fair game? Toys for children are generally mass­produced and readily available online with minimal price competition, indepen­ dent high street stores, regardless of product or service, are the ones who are fighting to stay afloat and a boost at Christ­ mas with those extra hours to trade could mean the differ­ ence of them surviving this pandemic or losing their liveli­ hood. So wherever possible this year let’s support local indepen­ dent stores, but wouldn’t it be nice if the government sup­ ported this concept also?

Rally to ask for more Aid FRIDAY, November 20 saw a procession of cars travelling in Marbella to protest for aid from local government. The businesses involved in this rally were asking for direct aid from the local council for the hostelry traders of Marbella, they drove from Pablo Raez Boulevard along Severo Ocho until reaching Puerto Banus. Local Police recorded 50 vehicles in total as being in the rally or proces­ sion. One of the lead vehicles had been made to look like a hearse complete with wreaths on the side and posters with Rest In Peace in initials written along with ‘Marbella for rent’ signs. Approximately 250 people were associated with the action that started at 10am, and it is becoming an all too familiar sight in towns across An­ dalucia. Local people with businesses feel they must protest or demonstrate the fact that their livelihoods are dying along with the economy of Spain and something has to be done starting with more help from local councils.

Malaga Theatre Auditions MALAGA’S Soho Theatre is call­ ing for budding actors and ac­ tresses to audition for an exciting new production The Teatro del Soho Caixa­ bank (Soho Theatre) is showcas­ ing its own production of En la pista in the Antonio Banderas space next year. Directors are calling for Andalucian actresses and actors between 30 and 50 years old to audition for the play, which will premiere in June 2021. En la pista is a famous bit­

tersweet comedy written by cel­ ebrated British playwright John Godber. The Soho production has been translated by Ignacio Garcia May and will be directed by Marc­Montserrat Drukker. The theatre is accepting appli­ cations from aspiring Andalucian stars from Friday, November 20 until December 4. BRITISH multinational Sports Direct has bought the Toys ‘R’ Us store in Malaga. Multinational Brit company Sports Direct has just completed the purchase of the Toys ‘R’ Us building in Malaga, making this the sixth toy store the sports fashion specialist has bought in Spain. The sports and toy giants have come to a mutually beneficial ‘Sale & Leaseback’ agreement, whereby Sports Direct purchases the building Toys ‘R’ Us are op­ erating from, and the two brands then share the same space. The toy superstore essen­ tially becomes a tenant of Sports Direct. This arrangement has already proven successful in stores in Alcobendas (Madrid), Sant Boi (Barcelona), Granada, Valencia, Malaga and Pamplona, as reported by Cushman & Wakefield, which has acted as sole consultant in this transaction. The acquisition of the Malaga store is reported to have cost €34 million.

Lucky day for diabetics IT was Friday No­ vember 13 and t h o s e a t L a C a l a L i­ ons and their Dia­ betic Support Group were worried be­ cause they had or­ ganised a big fun dinner at Sofia’s Restaurant Hong Kong to celebrate World Diabetic Day. Travel restrictions and curfews result­ ed in it being changed to lunchtime and only 40 of the 60 who had originally booked were able to attend which meant that there were frantic telephone calls which found nine new diners but then Eureka, along came Roger Wedge and his 11 golfing buddies and they were full! During the after­ noon President Gra­ ham Rutland pre­ sented the two nurses, Fay Newman of Angel’s Nursing Group and Mercy Chapman (retired nurse) with the cov­ eted Melvin Jones Lions Award. The icing on the cake was a surprise envelope from Char­ lie Mullins OBE, Founder of Pimlico Plumbers which con­ tained €200 mean­ ing that the lunch raised a total of €1,163. Every Wednesday and Saturday ­ weather permitting ­ until Christmas, you will find the Li­ ons and the Diabetic Support Group out­ side the Mijas Town Hall at the Solidarity Tables. Potes is Prettiest

THE town of Potes, in Cantabria, has been named the prettiest in­ land town in Spain. Website Rural Escape award­ ed Potes the prize for Capital of Rural Tourism 2020 and more re­ cently according to a survey car­ ried out amongst the Lonely Planet community of travellers in Spain, it has been chosen as the most beautiful inland town in Spain by more than 48,000 peo­ ple. Potes was closely followed in

the ranking by Besalu (Girona), and in third and fourth place the the towns of Albarracin (Teruel) and Alquezar (Huesca). Potes is a town located in the Liebana area of the region of Cantabria in northern Spain. It is located at the confluence of four valleys and was declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1983 for its medieval architecture. When travel restrictions are lifted, it is an ideal summer travel destination.

Quarantine Down to Five Days TRAVELLERS to England will be allowed to exit quarantine after five days if they pay for a test for coronavirus and it comes back negative, transport secretary Grant Shapps has announced. Under the new rules, which come into force from December 15, passengers who arrive from a destination not on the government’s safe travel corridors list will still need to enter self-isolation, however they can reduce the 14-day period by paying for a test from a private firm after five days at a cost of between £65-£120. The travel industry welcomed the policy but described it as ‘long overdue’ after months of lobbying ministers to change restrictions. Results from the tests will normally be issued in 24 to 48 hours, meaning people could be released from quarantine six days after arrival.

PAY UP OR STAY

THE National Police of Sevilla have released a man previously held against his will for not paying for sexual services he had received. The man had been detained by up to five women in the establishment in Nervion in Sevilla. Both parties have been arrested, the man for fraud and the women for illegal imprisonment. During the evening the man had enjoyed the services of the five women and it’s al-

leged consumed narcotic substances. The services bill came to €3,000 and when the National Police arrived at the property, police believed to be a brothel, the five women claimed they had already settled the dispute; however, police chose to arrest the suspects anyway. The police later established that the women had indeed locked the ‘client’ in the bathroom of the property to prevent him from leaving without paying.

Black Friday MOST Black Friday deals are actually not that much of a bargain according to new re­ search by Which? Nearly nine out of 10 products on sale during the sales event were found to be on offer previously, for the same price or less. The consumer group tracked the prices of 219 popular products over the course of a year, including for six months before and af­ ter Black Friday in 2019. The analysis looked at products from top retailers, and the products included home and tech goods such as headphones, fridge freezers and soundbars. It found 85 per cent of the items could be found cheaper or for the same price in the six months before Black Friday.

Message from the British Embassy THE UK Government has written to more than 100,000 Brits living in Spain to help them prepare for the end of the transition period: • One of the largest UK Government direct mail campaigns to UK Nationals living in EU and EFTA member states, with 365,000 customers on Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) database contacted. • UK Nationals resident before 31 December can continue living and working in Spain, but will need to register as soon as possible if they have not already done so. • UK State Pensioners will continue to receive their healthcare cover and pensions as they do now. • UK Nationals Support Fund has so far assisted more than 37,000 UK Nationals in Spain. The UK Government has written to 365,000 UK Nationals living in Europe with advice on the actions they need to take to prepare for the end of the UK transition period on December 31. This includes 102,087 letters issued to people on DWP’s database in Spain.

The letters, sent to UK State Pensioners and benefit recipients, give advice on how to register for residency and healthcare, exchange driving licences and check new passport validity rules online. It is one of the largest-ever mail outs by the UK Government to UK nationals living in the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. British Ambassador to Spain Hugh Elliott said: “Supporting UK Nationals is one of our highest priorities. VAT on Juice is unfair Skiing has THE government has caused ‘confusion’ over plans to raise VAT on or­ ange juice from 10 per cent 21 per cent, as if it were a sugary soft drink. DESPITE everything being ready to start the skiing season at Sierra Nevada ski resort on November 28, the opening will have to wait. The Granada ski resort will have to adjust its plans since the President of the Junta de Andalucia, Juanma Moreno, has extended confinement measures in Andalucian towns until December 10. Sierra Nevada will not be able to receive visitors until mobility restrictions are lifted, despite there being snow forecast. Businesses at the ski resort were completing the details for the opening of the winter season, and according to Cetursa, the company which runs the ski resort, everything was ready to go, however, with strict measures throughout the province, it will have to wait.

Primitiva Millions - check now A MASSIVE lotto win on the Primitiva Lottery means it’s time to check your tickets. The draw held on Thursday Novem­ ber 19, in Madrid saw zero winners for the Special Category, although a winning ticket of €1.4 million was validated for the First Category. A ticket sold in Nijar, Almeria, has won over €44,000 for a second category prize. There are also lucky winners for tickets sold in Barcelona, Madrid, and Asturias.

STUDENTS in Madrid claim they are forced to study in casinos as they are ‘easier to access than libraries’ which have tighter capacity restrictions. The group of young people, known as ‘Young Rebellion,’ say they are studying in casinos and bookmakers in protest against the ‘severe restrictions’ imposed on libraries, saying “many libraries in Madrid do not even open, the hours are ridiculous and the appointments are inaccessible. “Do you know that in Madrid it is easier for a student to access a

bookmaker than a library?” they claim on their Twitter profile, adding they are “fed up with the current conditions of libraries having a 50 per cent capacity while the bookmakers have 60 per cent.” “Betting houses are open until midnight while libraries are only until 8pm” they point out, adding, “the (library) appointment system for many people is inaccessible, people who do not have ADSL, who do not have internet at home. However, we can enter any bookmaker, whenever we want, as we want even being minors.”

Venues shut down TWO neighbouring businesses have been shut down for three months over numerous breaches of Covid regulations. The Milan Palace and Tudor Rose in west London, had their licence suspended following a hearing at Ealing Licence Committee. In September and October, both venues hosted wedding ceremonies of up to 150 people and other events which breached regulations ‘to keep Londoners safe,’ said the Metropolitan Police. In addition to the closure, the Tudor Rose was handed a £1,000 fine for one breach and the Milan Palace was handed an approximate fine of £7,000 for three breaches. Chief Superintendent Pete Gardner, West Area policing commander, said: “The brazen actions of these venues were completely selfish - they deserve to have their licence temporarily stripped for putting their community at risk.

SINCE the beginning of the pandemic, the popularity of auctions has soared in the Valencian community, with savvy buyers looking to snap up a bargain as prices drop. Eactivos.com, who manages online sales and bankruptcy actions, reported that there has been more than two-and-a-half times more auction activity in Valencia compared to last year, representing an increase in supply of 158 per cent. So far this year, 197

events have been carried out, and 10,133 offers have been recorded from a total of 2,725 participants with the most popular item for auctions, not surprisingly, being property, with residents in Valencia, Alicante, Xabia, Aldaia, Cullera and Oropesa snapping up the most deals. A total of 88,490 shares in Valencia CF were auctioned in two batches this year, with €128,000 securing the lucky bidder 17,600 shares in the club.

Succesful birth

DOCTORS from various departments of Sevilla’s Virgen del Rocio hospital successfully managed to deliver the baby of a woman who suffered a brain haemorrhage during pregnancy. The 29-year-old mother, Saray, suffered a left hemiplegia 27 weeks into her pregnancy, leading to a high risk of dangerous cerebral bleeding. Experts in neurosurgery, gynaecology, neonatology and anaesthesia worked closely to monitor the mother and her unborn child until the infant was due. In a highly complex procedure, doctors delivered the child by Caesarian while others simultaneously worked to remove the cerebral malformation. Thanks to the staff’s immense skill and collaboration, the operation was a huge success. Healthy baby Pilar was successfully delivered and her mother’s condition greatly improved. THE Guardia Civil has purchased dozens of new electric vehicles which will be distributed across the country where there are ports and airports. General Director, María Gámez said the acquisition is part of a com­ mitment to the conservation of the environment as well as a long­term cost­cutting exercise. “The acquisition and subsequent distribution of the 50 vehicles and their scope of use, is aimed at port areas and airports, since there are al­ ready established recharging points in these closed facilities,” she said. “Within the scope of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), the Guardia Civil wishes to reinforce its commitment to the conservation of the environment and reduce as far as possible the gas emissions of the vehicles that make up its fleet.” The Nissan LEAF vehicles are pure electric with a 40 Kw battery, and will be distributed across Spain, including the Costa Blanca, Costa del Sol and Mallorca.

Judge annuls fine A JUDGE has ruled that a man’s failure to comply with the State of Alarm was not disobedience and has annulled a fine of €601. Court number one in Segovia resolved that skipping the confine­ ment during the State of Alarm was not reason for a fine for dis­ obedience and that the fine is not within legal boundaries. The judge admits that the man’s behaviour was “unfair and antisocial” by endangering other people in a pandemic, but only from an ethical or moral

point of view. However, he considers that it was a one­off occasion, as there was no persistent disobedient atti­ tude towards the authorities or the officers of the law; neither did the man refuse to provide identity or give false data. The fine was is­ sued based on article 36.6 of the Organic Law for the Protection of Citizen Security (LOPSC) of 2015, at the time, going out of the house was forbidden, other than to go to buy food or to the chemist and certain other situations.

Knife Man ALICANTE police have arrested a man for breaking curfew on Wednesday, November 18, and walking the San Carlos street armed with a large knife. According to police sources, the incident took place when officers located a person, who was suspected of being in a fight earlier in the night, walking down the street, violating the Covid curfew, and carrying a large knife. The officers found the man, who had suffered injuries from the alleged fight, and promptly took him into custody on weapons charges and opened up an investigation to clarify the motives and location of the alleged fight, and to find out if anyone else was harmed.

Two men and one woman, between the ages of 39 and 47, are being investigated for crimes against public health after officers learned through a pharmaceutical company that rapid Covid-19 tests were being carried out without authorisation, in a hardware

store in the town of Pobla de Vallbona and in a Bazaar in Manises. After raiding an establishment believed to belong to the perpetrators, a bag with a Covid-19 test box was seized along with different utensils for its use, as well as used test kits too. Guardia Civil officers ascertained that one of those under investigation had a contact within the pharmaceutical company and that several other companies had offered him

Ford factory closes THE Ford factory in Almussafes in the Valencian Community is set to close for a month, from December 17 to January 11, due to a drop in demand from the European market, particularly countries like the UK, France and Germany. In a meeting between Ford bosses and ERTE, it was decided that these dates would have the least amount of impact on employees, as the plant was due to halt production for a few days over the Christmas period anyway. At the beginning of November, Ford Almussafes had agreed to extend the ERTE to January 31, spreading 14 days of employment over the months of November, December and January. However, under the new agreement, all of the pre-arranged January stoppage dates will be moved to December. MORE than 37 million Spaniards - around 80 per cent of the population - claim to recycle. According to data collected by Focus for Ecoembs, 95.3 per cent of those surveyed believe that recycling is important to curb climate change, with 80 per cent revealing they do so on a daily basis. Thief used child A 36-YEAR-OLD woman has been arrested in Malaga by the National Police for allegedly using a child to snatch books from a central bookstore, which she then sold online. Uni testing A UK university is rolling out mass Covid testing for stu­ dents before they head home for Christmas. The free asymptomatic tests will be available for all students planning to leave the University of St Andrews in Fife, Scotland, over the in­ ter­semester break and those remaining in the town. The tests are voluntary, but students have been strongly advised to take them as ‘young people, in particular, are likely to have no symptoms, but are still able to carry the virus back to family or friends over the hol­ idays.’ The University is planning to open a Testing Centre by Monday, November 30, in the University Sports Centre.

The Boston­based R R Auction said the collection privately held by the late American blues artist Tony Glover, a longtime friend who died last year, was sold this week to a bidder whose identity was not been disclosed. The ‘trove’ also included transcripts of Glover’s 1971 interviews with Dylan, and private letters between the two. The interviews reveal that Nobel Prize winner Dylan had anti­ Semitism on his mind when he changed his name from Robert Zimmerman, and that he penned ‘Lay Lady Lay’ for Barbra Streisand.

RENFE investment

SPANISH railway company Renfe will make its largest investment in decades. More than €3.5 billion will be invested in the renewal plan, starting in 2021, although the plan was launched last year. During the first half of the year, the company will award contracts to renew 50 per cent of its trains, which is expected to create 52,000 jobs. Most of the investment will be destined to improving short and medium distance services, which represent 80 per cent of Renfe’s operations. There are some 1,016 trains, according to national reports, but since 2011 no new trains have been added, and many of those operating are more than

The port is currently housing over 1,300 immigrants and there are a further 5,500 people in various apartments and hotels.

Police Fail ITV OVER 2,000 Guardia Civil vehicles have not passed the Technical Vehicle Inspection (ITV) this year and at least 2,629 have accumulated more than 300,000 kms. According to government figures, at least 3,562 vehicles of the fleet are older than 15 years old, however, if the renovation plans proposed by the Ministry of Interior are agreed to, the fleet will still not be ‘updated’ until 2028. The worrying and ‘unfavourable reports’ on the ITV (Spain’s equivalent of the UK’s MOT) could have been even higher, according to the figures, since they did not include the data corresponding to Granada, Córdoba and A Coruña. The highest incidence of failures has been found in the vehicles assigned to the Sevilla police force with over 290 failing to pass the ITV so far this year. In some positive news for the Guardia Civil, vehicles op­ erating in Burgos, Ceuta and Murcia fully passed the in­ spection.

Wandering Vulture A YOUNG vulture was found wandering disorientated in the San Fer­ nando of Cadiz area on Saturday November 21. It is thought that the young griffon vulture had ventured into the town to find food and wa­ ter, and then become disoriented, surprising local residents. He was rescued by the authorities and transferred to a recovery cen­ tre for wildlife. Heroic Purse Recovery A HEROIC man stopped a woman’s purse from being stolen in Alcantarilla, Murcia after witnessing the theft from his balcony. He observed the teenager snatching the purse of a 59­year­old woman and man­ aged to make it downstairs and onto the street in order to detain the perpetrator until the arrival of the police officers. The woman was knocked unconscious during the attack after being dragged across the ground before the man was able to reach the 18­year­old attacker. Speaking to officers on Sunday, Novem­ ber 22, the woman said she was able to re­ cover her phone and her purse, but some of her personal effects were missing after the attacker threw them away whilst being chased by the man from the balcony.

Bad Boss sentenced

A COURT has confirmed the sentence handed down to a businessman for smacking one of his female employees on the backside. The events took place in 2018 in Pontevedra when the man approached the girl, who was 17 at the time, and after telling her that she had a “nice body,” a “nice bum” and that he “wanted her” for himself, he slapped her on the backside.

He was sentenced by a criminal court to pay a fine of €3,240 for sexual abuse, a ruling which he appealed in the Provincial Court. However, the Provincial Court has rejected his appeal considering that there is sufficient evi­ dence against him with the testimonies of the victim and eye witnesses, including other col­ leagues.

No Black Friday

CARREFOUR has agreed to suspend its ‘Black Friday’ sale events across France after Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire called for supermarkets and online retailers to postpone them due to Covid lockdowns. Shops selling non-essential goods are to remain closed during France’s second national lockdown and the events due to take place in stores across the country from November 27 to 29 are now set to be cancelled. According to Reuters, a spokeswoman for Europe’s biggest retailer confirmed that Carrefour’s chairman and CEO Alexandre Bompard spoke with La Maire by telephone, stating: “Alexandre Bompard said he agreed to suspend the Black Friday operation from November 27 to November 29.”

56 Branches to Close Swedish

LLOYDS BANKING GROUP is still looking to lose 56 branches, which saw plans to push ahead paused because of Covid, resulting in around 160 job cuts by April 2021. The company first announced the move back in January, however, the pandemic meant that it wasn’t able to carry out the plans, affecting not only Lloyds branches but also Halifax and Bank of Scotland branches. According to the group, Lloyds

has already cut over 2,000 jobs since the start of September, after carrying out restructuring plans before the ‘second wave’ of the pandemic. A Lloyds Banking Group spokesperson said: “In January this year we announced that these branches would be closing due to a decline in use. “We paused these closures due to the Covid-19 pandemic and, after careful consideration, these planned closures will take place in March and April 2021.”

Pharmacy Testing CATALONIA: Pharmacies will start to perform tests.

PHARMACIES are set to help increase the number of Covid-19 tests that can be carried out in Catalonia. The Spanish Department of Health wants to make best use of the numerous pharmacies to increase testing capacity. Once Catalonia starts to reopen in phases after the severe lockdown ends later this month, Secretary General of the Ministry of Health of the Generalitat, Marc Ramentol, wants to use the existing network of pharmacies in Catalonia to perform Covid-19 antigen tests.

Fugitive A SWEDISH crime gang fugitive, who was under a European Arrest and Surrender Order for the murder of two rival gang members, has been arrested in Barcelona. National Police, in collaboration with the Stockholm-North Police, arrested the fugitive who worked as part of a gang known as the Risne Network in Barcelona and was also wanted for illegal possession of firearms, possession and use of explosives, extortion charges after demanding €293,756 and threatening to kill a third victim and his family, even exploding a device in front of the victim’s family home. Upon searching two houses believed to be linked to the man, police officers seized various mobile phones, SIM cards, prepaid credit cards, cash and a 30cm blade machete. Six other people were arrested as part of the investigation, and further raids uncovered explosives, a submachine gun and a pistol, as well as ammunition for these weapons.

THE parents of 91 youths fined for holding an illegal party in Zamora in August each paid €3,000 fines and have asked that their children do community service. The party, organised on social networks, attracted youths from all over Spain and was held in Vime de Sanabria, a town in Zamora with 60 inhabitants, between August 7 and 9. The youths were evicted by court order by the Guardia Civil for breaching anti-Covid regulations. The Castilla y Leon regional government delegation in Zamora, has confirmed that all of the fines have been received and processed, including €126,000 from the organiser of the event. Many of the parents contacted the delegation to ask if, in addition to paying the fine, the youths can be given community service. They reportedly proposed this because they are so angry with their children for causing a health risk.

Covid-19 card game A GROUP of Spaniards living in Ireland have created a card game based on the Covid­19 pandemic. The game, called simply Covid Game, was launched this month, and sold 500 copies in two days in Ireland. The game mixes the mechan­ ics of renowned card game UNO and the Spanish­created Virus game, but the theme is the pan­ demic. It can be played by between two and six people, who will have to try to get four vaccines to win, while the rest of the players use coronavirus to prevent it. The creators decided to see the positive side of things and wanted to create something to

WINE retailer, Naked Wines, contributed to an online alcohol delivery boom this year as national and local lockdowns drove more people to order booze to be deliv­ ered. Naked Wines saw sales online jump by 80 per cent in the six months to the end of September, with their base of active cus­

tomers, who pay £20 (€22) into their ac­ count each month to spend on wine from independent producers, jumping by 37 per cent in the last 12 months. This means an increase of around 204,000 to 757,000 customers and has seen the company double its warehouse capacity in the face of a boom in demand.

Arrested at Deniers Rally A MAN was arrested in Bilbao for repeatedly refusing to wear a mask at a Covid deniers car rally in Bilbao. The Basque police, the Ertzaintza, charged him with disobeying the authorities and reported that he refused to provide ID when re­ quested. The rally was called to go around the city to demand “a scientific debate” on Covid­19 and to denounce the “lack of rights” of Span­ ish citizens. Another man taking part is being investigated for insulting the police and 13 people have been fined for breaching security mea­ sures. A case has been opened against the organiser for not keeping to the agreed route, according to the Basque Security Department.

Carer arrested for theft A CARER was arrested in Tocina, Sevilla, charged with stealing the jewellery of the elderly woman she cared for following her death. Her accomplice was also arrested after they sold the jewellery at a pawn shop. The detainees allegedly made a copy of the elderly woman’s house keys, and when the

woman died, returned the original keys to the family. When the jewellery was reported missing, Guardia Civil launched an investigation which included everyone who had access to the house. The man had sold all of the victim’s gold jewellery, except a watch, which was returned to the woman’s son.

Auction Fraud THE first passengers to arrive at Malaga airport needing a negative test are happy that they had the test and feel safer stating they believe it’s a good measure to restrict the spread of Covid­19. The restriction/rule became law on Monday, Novem­ ber 23 and applies to every passenger who has decided to travel to Spain from a risk zone as predetermined by the countries health officials. The nationality of the passenger or place of residence is not the priority, it is the destination they travelled from, and if this destination is on a 'risk' register, then they will need to bring with them a valid correct and current 'PCR' test. The 'PCR' test must be written in Spanish or English or it can in the form of an electronic file downloadable by agents of the airport security.

NATIONAL POLICE has arrested a 38­year­ old man in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Gran Canaria, for online auction fraud. The man reportedly ran a collectors web­ site that held online auctions for specialised goods, however, it became apparent that the operation wasn’t legit after one woman reported to police that she hadn’t received her items despite being the winning bidder. After the woman, who lives in Santiago de Compostela, alerted National Police that she had in fact not only failed to receive the products she bid for, but also that the per­ petrator declined any type of responsibility and failed to reimburse her with the €628 she had parted with.

AG School Canteens Delayed T H E school canteens for Malaga have been delayed yet again, but distinct progress is being made with laptops for children and Covid-19 safety measures in schools. As the school year started, Malaga schools found that many were to be without a dining room affecting over 2,000 children. Repeated delays have been experienced

and now the expected opening date is early December. The start of the pandemic saw technology become far more important with classes being held online, this caused an issue for many families that did not have computers or internet, however progress has been made and many laptops were supplied to families earlier this year. Brexit Approaching WITH the end of the transitional period approaching, the demand among UK citizens to regularise their situation in Spain is growing with almost 3,000 Brits who did not have the necessary paperwork, applying during the last four and a half months in Malaga alone. According to the data provided by the Sub-delegation of the Government of Spain in the province of Malaga, the Immigration Office registered 2,692 requests of this type between July 6 and November 10 of this year.

Millions for Marbella Investment MILLIONS will be invested into Marbella to build three luxury resorts consolidating Marbella’s position in luxury tourism. The complexes will add fivestar hotels to the area’s existing complement, and the investments will total over €400 million. The Andalucian Government is set to approve the three projects and has created a new scheme to help reduce the bureaucratic overheads with such projects. The three resorts will be The Puerto Banus, creating over 700 jobs and an investment of €134 million. The Siete Revueltas with over 400 jobs and a €77 million investment, and The Las Dunas Club with a staggering €200 million investment and a total of nearly 500 jobs.

BBVA Sabadell merger SPANISH bank BBVA has confirmed that it is in talks with the smaller Banco Sabadell, which also owns TSB in the UK, regarding a potential merger that would create a global financial in­ stitution worth €860 billion. BBVA announced on Mon­ day, November 16 that it has agreed to sell PNC, its sub­ sidiary in the US, for $11.6 bil­ lion (€9.7 billion). Currently, Sabadell has a market capitali­ sation of €2.3 billion compared with BBVA’s €24.5 billion. The Spanish banking sec­ tor is now going through

three simultaneous merg­ ers. The first one is the tie­up deal for €4.3 billion an­ nounced in September by CaixaBank and Bankia, which will create Spain’s largest financial institution. But it is not just the giant lenders who are joining forces: the smaller Unicaja and Liberbank are in talks as well. If the merger between BB­ VA and Sabadell proceeds, the resulting entity will be the second largest financial institution in the country.

100,000 Masks

THANKS to the twinning of the cities Valencia and Xi’an in China, Valencia is distributing 100,000 masks to people from vulnerable groups after a supply was received from Xi’an. The generous donation will be distributed among municipal delegations related to care for disadvantaged or at-risk groups, such as active ageing, social welfare, resident protection and health. Jamie’s Staff Win SEVENTY staff, who worked at a closed Jamie Oliver restaurant, have won a legal claim of over £200,000 (€225,000) following a failure in the redundancy process. All the staff worked at Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Corn­ wall restaurant which the 45­ year­old TV chef opened in Watergate Bay near Newquay in 2006. The claim, which upon win­ ning means the staff will re­ ceive the equivalent of eight weeks’ pay, was made follow­ ing the sudden closure of the property last December which was done without warning. Electric vehicle recharging SPANISH energy companies are taking the concept of electric cars very seriously with two important announcements concerning deals with car manufacturers. Firstly, Ionity, the ultra-fast charging network in Europe comprising BMW, Mercedes Benz, Ford, Hyundai and Volkswagen (and its’ subsidiaries) has agreed with Cepsa to create an ultra-fast charging corridor which will connect Barcelona and Madrid. THEY claim that like the Alba­ tross, the founders of Spain’s first plant­based ice cream suitable for vegans and those with gluten problems, are mi­ grants by nature and be­ tween the two of them have lived in almost 15 countries which is why they named their brand Pink Albatross. Pepe Biaggio and Luke Sal­ danha met through a mutual friend and since both are pas­ sionate about ice cream, the idea came up of creating an ice cream that everyone could enjoy, a product that was con­ sistent with their philosophy, principles and needs. Their dream now is to per­ suade Spanish supermarkets to stock their range of differ­ ent vegan ice creams and then expand across Europe.

TOTAL UK consumer spending in 2020 is expected to fall by a staggering £183.6 billion (€202 billion), a 14.9 per cent drop over 2019, due to the Covid­19 induced lockdowns, according to new research from Mintel’s flagship British Lifestyles report. This equates to a drop in spending of around £6,600 (€7,250) per household ­ with the biggest decreases occur­ ring in the transport, food ser­ vice, and holiday industries. Consumer spending in these three categories will fall by £140 billion (€154 billion) in total, or just over £5,000 (€5,500) per household ­ rep­ resenting around 77 per cent of the overall decline in con­ sumer spending this year.

Huge bonus MATT MOULDING, CEO of the Hut Group (THG), an e­com­ merce company which oper­ ates over 100 international websites selling fast­moving consumer goods and its own brand of beauty products, has just received a bonus. It was based on share per­ formance which had to reach a certain level over 15 days and having achieved this, he has been granted shares in the company valued at around £828 million (€983 million). He set the company up in 2004 with an initial invest­ ment of £500,000 (€550,000) and this year he is one of the best paid bosses in the world.

£500 million UK loan guarantee THE Government of Gibraltar in the form of Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo has welcomed the Written Ministerial State­ ment on Gibraltar’s Covid Response filed on November 19 by the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth & De­ velopment Affairs of the United King­

dom, Rt Hon Dominic Raab MP. The Written Ministerial Statement confirms that it has been agreed that the United Kingdom government will pro­ vide a loan guarantee to the Gibraltar government for a lending facility of up to £500 million.

This guarantee will provide resilience to the government’s finances by en­ abling Gibraltar to borrow at more favourable rates, relying on the UK gov­ ernment’s higher sovereign credit rating as the guarantor and confirming the Government of Gibraltar’s capacity to re­

pay the principal loan. The Chief Minister expressed his thanks to the British gov­ ernment and said “This is excellent news and I am delighted to be able to inform the community of this massive show of support from the United Kingdom at this difficult time.”

Norwegian Air seeks protection

NORWEGIAN AIR: Will continue to operate its route network and trade as normal. FOLLOWING the government of Norway’s decision to withhold further support from the airline, and the on­ going Covid­19 pandemic, Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA (Norwegian) has decided to initiate an examinership process in Ireland. Norwegian has chosen an Irish process since its aircraft assets are held in Ireland and has taken this decision in the interest of its stake­ holders. The purpose of the process is to reduce debt, rightsize the fleet and secure new capital. This reorganisa­ tion process protects the as­ sets of the Norwegian group while allowing the company to focus on the rightsizing of the group. The process is es­ timated to take up to five months. The battle is already lost LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT SOMETIMES the double standards and pure unadulterated hypocrisy of the BBC simply defies the imagination. They have now decided to censor ‘A Fairy Tale of New York,’ the longtime Christmas classic by the Pogues ­ in case it upsets its younger listeners. What a load of pure and utter codswallop. This is the same company that gives airtime to the mind numbing rap performers, whose lyrics often glorify the very worst the youth of today has to offer. To be quite honest, I have always thought the lyrics of ‘Fairytale’ were a little on the strong side; but if it does need to be censored or banned, I suggest that the BBC gets its priorities right and starts restraining some of the so­called ‘music’ that promotes the gang cultures and other mind numbing rubbish that is corrupting our young and destroying all their sense of common decency and respect.

Basically what the BBC are telling its ‘younger listeners’ is that it’s ok to promote drugs and murder, but not ok to talk about ‘faggots in a drunk tank.’ Neither sentiment is particularly endearing, but given the choice it’s a no brainer. Mind you, we’d better tread carefully here, heaven forbid we should ‘upset’ anyone! This next observation comes under the ‘just when you thought you’d heard it all’ heading. A bunch of illegal immigrants, who recently landed in the Balearics, have gone on hunger strike! They complained that they were not allowed to ‘come and go’ in the hotel in which they were ensconced. Apparently, since their arrival, there had also been allegations of theft and hostility toward staff ­ with one immigrant complaining that his room didn’t have a sea view! Doesn’t this just show the contempt these entitlement refugees have for those in the West and in particular the UK? These people come from cultures whose morals and standards were exceeded by ours centuries ago. Most of them will never integrate or bring anything of value to our way of life. You

don’t bring people like this up to your standards; they drag you down to theirs; defecating in the street for example! The snowflakes that condone our liberal immigration policies never come near these illegals in real life. The closest the privileged politicians and their cronies come to mixing with different cultures is with individuals that are already themselves privileged. It is the ordinary men and woman in the street that are forced to experience the bewildering change and culture upheaval as their localities are taken over and subsequently altered forever by the thousands of total strangers they are expected (often by law), to live and integrate with. Well, I’ve always maintained it would all end in violence, but with the lily livered PC politicians selling out to Saudi money, I think the battle is already lost. There is one bright spark on the horizon however. Apparently we have now beaten the flu virus. This year reported flu cases are down by a staggering 98 per cent. Now there’s a surprise! The day before my appointment I got a call saying that my specialist was not doing in­person appointments and would call the next day between 8.30am and 1pm. My doctor did call the next day and asked me what the problem was. I said the main problem is that you are going to try and diagnose me over the ‘phone and charge me handsomely for the privilege. She said that she wasn’t seeing any pa­ tients in person at the moment and of course, as she is a neumologist she is deal­ ing with Covid patients. So I said what about all the people that

don’t have Covid? How are you going to examine them over the ‘phone? How do you do X­rays, blood tests or even just have a listen? This is where it got interesting. She said that if I felt ill I should go to A & E and they would do all the tests there. I asked why she couldn’t arrange that and she said the hospital doesn’t want people coming there, queuing at reception and hanging around the waiting area even though they have a mask policy, social dis­ tancing and sanitiser everywhere. She said it wasn’t her decision but the hospital ad­ ministrators. They felt, as A & E was using full PPE, that was the correct way to do things. She then said I should get a new puffer and maybe some antibiotics. I said are you re­ ally prescribing medicine to me over the ‘phone? So there you have it folks ­ meds prescribed over the ‘phone. I’m glad it wasn’t my prostate doctor. Gawd knows what he would have asked me to do with my ‘phone. Mind you, by the end of my chat with my chest doctor, I think she was about to suggest the same thing! THE UK’s most popular Christmas tree could be in short supply due to imports from Denmark being halted by Covid-19 restrictions. Britain usually imports more than one million Nordmann Fir trees each year from what is Europe’s largest festive tree producer. However, exports to the UK and other countries have been severely hit by restrictions linked to a cull of mink, which became a reservoir for a mutant form of coronavirus. Garden centres claim that many stores and supermarkets rely on Danish trees for their festive stock. Around 10 million Christmas trees are sold in Britain every year, around three million of them are imported.

For a worthy cause MARBELLA MOMENTS BY NICOLE KING I’VE just found out that Radio Television Marbella has a YouTube channel and that all my shows are available from there! Another great example of not knowing what is often right in front of us because we didn’t think to ask. This is a large part of the ethos of Marbella Now; bringing you a wide variety of guests representative of our international community, often bearing a solution to a problem where least expected or an opportunity not thought of, or a cause that is close to your heart and an opportunity to help. On Monday 23.11.2020 my first guest was with author and journalist Liz Parry. I was eager to talk about her new book ‘Va por ti’ - ‘This is for you,’ a very singular phrase book that covers typical Spanish sayings and expressions to enrich our experience in Spain and our understanding of the culture. I’ve ordered three

copies from The Book Shop in San Pedro; two for Christmas presents and one for me. Liz also explains her involvement and history behind The English Cemetery in Malaga and her concern for Cudeca, which she has actively supported for years. Coincidentally, on Tuesday 24th we welcomed to the show Esther Raez, in charge of PR for Cudeca. Cudeca is our only Cancer Hospice on the Costa del Sol, which makes their present financial conundrum even more compelling. In an effort to offset their acute losses during this past year they have just launched ‘Join the Sunflower Effect’ campaign to hopefully prompt much needed funds. Their priority is keeping their medical team operational. As I understand it, the Butterfly Children Charity is similarly affected by their shops having been closed for so long, a lack of volunteers to run them (when they are allowed to open) and hardly any events to raise money either. Our support is literally vital for them and all our other charities at this time; please, please pick one! Also on Tuesday we met prominent

artist Roger Cummiskey, who although trapped in the rain in lockdown in Ireland had no problems connecting via Zoom for a very cheery chat. On Wednesday 25th Andrea introduced Caviar and Friends, an exclusive new shop and concept for tasting and gifting caviar. If you like home makeover shows you’ll be fascinated with Ashaki Brown’s interview as she travels between Marbella and Detroit turning shambles into dream investment properties. On Thursday 26th Peter Claesson introduces MicroForests that can be unrolled anywhere, plus another recipe courtesy of Chef Aitor Perurena of La Rosticceria Marbella. On Friday 27th I chat with Masha Malka, author, coach and professional speaker; firstly about her life challenges, including escaping the USSR. MANY Brits who live here in Spain have for this year abandoned the idea of spending Christmas with their UK family and friends due to the pandemic, which seemingly just will not go away! First, there was quarantine, then lockdown, then the prospect of requiring a negative PCR test before returning to Spain, all issues that have caused widespread flight cancellations, and already cost many expats a considerable amount of money attempting to fly home throughout the course of the year. Some areas of Britain will stay in Tier 2 or 3, where visitors from other households are not allowed making it impossible for expats to go home and visit family. If those hurdles aren’t enough, there’s also the issue of potentially risking the health of our loved ones, and having the guilt of making someone sick just isn’t what the festive period is made for. Regardless of our location, Covid measures will change the face of Christmas 2020, but it doesn’t need to be doom and gloom. Celebrating with family on Zoom or Facetime will bring us all together, no matter where in the world we are. How ‘Navidad’ will look in Spain remains uncertain, but it is safe to assume that parades will be cancelled. We know that, in the UK, safety measures for December will be relaxed over the holiday season, with a five-day ‘break’ to allow three families or households to spend time together. In Spain we are waiting to know if restaurants will be open after 6pm or if they will be closed completely. It’s safe to say the uncertainty is the most frustrating part of the whole situation.

The average weight loss of the first group was between 11lb to 1st 1lb (5­8kg), but the group who consumed more water before their meals lost an additional 4.4 lb or 2kg. I think too much. I feel too much. I talk too much. I do too much. I am too intense. Too sensitive. Too empathetic. Too obsessive. Too emotional. Too self-absorbed. Too analytical. Too creative. Too idealistic. Too needy. Too dramatic. But then I think I am not enough, I will never be a successful business woman. I haven’t done anything ‘insanely great.’ I finished school with nothing. I dropped out of hairdressing college. I have done things I regret. I could have saved my family from so much heartbreak. I need a lot of reassuring. I will never be able to move very far from home, home is safe. My friends do so much more than I do. I have made mistakes.

But the truth is - everything about me is just M O R E. It’s not too much. It’s just more. More ME. My ‘moreness’ (if that is even a word!) includes massive amounts of self-analysis, self-criticism and self-awareness. Which then leads me to, yup ,you guessed it . Not ‘enoughness’. It’s so easy to be dragged down by my own thoughts, getting into that comparison game with yourself! No more! I am going to compare me to myself, to see how far I have come, and what I have overcome. I have criticised myself for years and it’s not worked, so here we go with trying to approve of myself - let’s see what happens! Most of us have had our busi­ nesses destroyed and over here there is little or zero government support and those that haven’t been wiped out have had to re­ think and re­structure, we are all on the ropes, 2020 certainly is the annus horribilis! Oddly though we won more awards in 2020 than ever before and last week we won the title of Best Fine Dining Restaurant in Malaga area against 10,000 oth­ ers. Best International Restau­ rant in Spain, Best on the Costa del Sol and Best Luxury Restau­ rant in Marbella all in 2020 from different award bodies. You would think that I would be elated but instead I have had to close! Mainly because of my health but the virus has been the icing on the cake. I have had varicose veins and heart palpitations for years, but this year my leg flared up and when I went to the doc­ tor’s they insisted that I get it

I have Chef’s Legs! seen to because the clots were so severe and could disturb blood flow to my heart and then I would have a real problem! So, I booked in really quickly with the Ochoa hospital in Mar­ bella. I have never had an opera­ tion before nor had an anaes­ thetic so I was a bit worried. Doctor Martin the vascular doc­ tor assured me that I was in great hands and I have to say for anyone needing a vascular sur­ geon this young good­looking doctor was amazing and so pro­ fessional. As I sit here writing my leg is now free of bandage and looks great except for a few bruises, it is a real transformation so quick­ ly! “Eat well” he said “and drink plenty of water!” Food is my thing (he knows that) but cook­ ing and eating well are two very different things. Chefs rarely eat anything healthy; they eat fast food on the move and usually lots of cheese and bread, hardly healthy. Chefs put themselves out there and put their clients first. Everything we do is at the ex­

pense of our own well­being in­ cluding burning ourselves on the gas and standing 15 hours a day, which is the reason I had vari­ cose veins in the first place. I had them for over 20 years and never bothered to get them looked at until one sum­ mers day in 2020, I got out of bed and couldn’t stand on my foot. It had flared up to more than twice the size and was bleeding. I called Helicopteros Sanitar­ ios as my wife Michele said … “you cannot go into work like that!” They came immediately and they bandaged it and treat­ ed it and I went to work and still did 15 hours. But after a few days I started to feel faint and my heart was pounding like a Formula 1 en­ gine. That’s when I contacted Ochoa Hospital and that’s when I met Dr Martin who may very well have changed my life! After only a few days my leg feels like it has had a ton of weight re­ moved. As far as the Ochoa Hospital is concerned my experience was disappointing because at every

appointment there was a prob­ lem at reception. They treated me more like a prisoner of war than a client or patient. Sadly, though that is very much the Spanish way and we have to put up with that if we want to live here. The southern Spanish es­ pecially don’t really get hospitali­ ty or understand customer care which is why the international businesses like ours scoop all the awards! I was surprised to see Tesco in Fuengirola packed with Spanish people, but then again at check out the staff spoke Spanish flu­ ently and offered a friendly cus­ tomer service that you don’t get from a Spanish supermarket! Of course, there are always excep­ tions. Back to food and yes. I agree with Dr Martin that I should look after my health more and so I will be eating more fish and veg­ etables, less saturated meat, drinking less alcohol, less coca cola, more water. Sounds blooming dull, but I have to put my health first for a change or I am at risk. You should do the same. Let’s make 2021 a healthier, happier and hopefully Covid free year! Aromatic Salmon en Papilotte En papilotte is French and means in paper but we are doing it in tin foil because it is a lot easier and quicker. This way of cooking is easy and ef­ fective as the fish literally steams in all the juices in the parcel Ingredients (serves two) Tin foil 2 good quality Norwegian salmon fillets with no bones or skin (approxi­ mately 150g each) 1 tomato sliced so that you have 4 slices 1 clove of garlic finely chopped 1 spring onion finely sliced 50ml of sake or dry white wine A little olive oil 1 lemon zested (you need to keep the zest) 1 pak / bok choy or broccoli Maldon salt and freshly milled black pepper 2 tablespoons natural soy sauce ½ teaspoon of sesame oil A sprinkling of toasted peanuts or cashews crushed optional 1 teaspoon of chopped red chilli (seeds removed)

125g of mushrooms washed and sliced Fresh coriander sprigs (or parsley) to finish optional Method 1. Mix the sake (or wine), chilli, soy sauce, garlic, sesame oil and the juice of 1 lemon together with a little olive oil. 2. Make 2 x30 cm squares with the tin foil. Place the slices of tomato in the centre and top with the sliced mushrooms. Add the onion sliced. 3. Now top this all with one salmon fillet and season it well. Repeat for the other parcel. 4. Finally top the salmon with the lemon zest and pour the wine/ chilli mix in step 1, over the salmon fillets equally. 5. Fold up the tin foil parcel so that the juices do not escape (see photo) 6. Steam the parcels on a metal tray on a hot barbecue for 10 minutes. Open the bags carefully to check that the salmon is cooked. Serve with lightly fried pak choy or broccoli on the side. 7. Finish the dish with crushed peanuts and sprigs of coriander or pars­ ley (optional). 8. Enjoy your meal knowing that you have just eaten one of the world’s best superfoods for health!

The Power of one’s Opinion ROBERT SHALLIS HOW powerful and important is our opin­ ion? Well, pretty powerful I would say, how­ ever, it is vital to remember ­ do not become confused between opinions and facts. For example, if you failed a test, your opin­ ion could be that you’re a failure. The fact is, the test was hard but the reality is, you simply failed a test. You have allowed yourself to see it a different way based on your opinion. So, your opinion can have a powerful effect on how you see yourself. One important thing to note, which can be considerably hard to grasp ­ other peo­ ple’s opinions of you are personal to them and actually nothing to do with you. It only becomes about you if you allow it to. Three people could have three completely oppos­ ing opinions of you depending on their per­ sonal view point for whatever reason that may be. Other people’s opinions can be damaging as they can crush our dreams and destroy our hopes, depending on how easily influenced we are by them, even though they may not intentionally mean to do so. Our job is to take

REMEMBER: It all starts with you. heed of only one opinion, the most impor­ tant, the opinion we have of ourselves. The opinion we have of ourselves is linked to the image we have of ourselves ­ our self­ image, it is a thought and a belief. The greater and more positive our self­image is, the high­ er the opinion of ourselves will be. Interest­ ingly enough, the more confidence and belief you have, the more opinions will change around you too as you begin to act like the person you perceive yourself to be. Motorway tolls proposed THE Minister of Transport, Jose Luis Abalos, has suggested introducing tolls on high-capacity Spanish roads, such as motorways, to pay for their maintenance. With the previous financial crisis, investment in motorways fell drastically and it has not yet been resumed. Another option to help with the upkeep of motorways is allocating EU funds, but they are not really top of the list of priorities. The plan is for everyone to pay the tolls, although Abalos said this week that people who have to use them to get to work

would not have to pay. Fees have not yet been set, but the suggestion proposed by construction companies was for €0.09 per kilometre for light vehicles and €0.19 for heavy vehicles. While the government has decided not to renew concessions with the companies managing some of the toll motorways, and in recent months, roads like the AP-7 and the AP-4 have become free, as will the AP-2 next year. However, the government has justified, it is unfair for some areas of Spain to have tolls while others don’t. The proposal is to be discussed soon.

SPORT THE expected extension of the current Covid restrictions has almost brought all walking football sessions to a halt. Only Benalmadena with a large membership are managing to just about sustain a full session at the Polideportivo. The only other club operating are WFS Calahon­ da and they are struggling to have enough to make up a five­a­side ses­ sion. Both clubs have sessions on Mon­ days and Thursdays starting at 9.45am. So if you fancy a gentle game of football why not go along and join them, only if you are in their area of course!!! The restrictions have played havoc with the BAHA WHISKEY mini League tournament leaving it to run out of time to fulfil all the fixtures. The teams are now looking for a solution to avoid the League collapsing as did the Blue Sky League last season. One possibility, is a one off day of play

Since then membership has risen to 71 members with the UK being well rep­ resented and also members from Ar­ gentina, Switzerland and Spain. The club aim to attract more Spanish over 50s. Ages range from 50 to 71. Club Manager Steve Lynton was something of a personality in the UK where he laid claim to having held the honour of being UK DJ of the year. Foot­ ball Legend George Best recognised Steve’s DJ talent and hired him as DJ for his night club. He was in the entertainment business for years and a nightclub and restaurant

were among his business interests. Having trained with Fleetwood Flyers WFC, Steve noticed there was no walk­ ing football club in Nerja so he formed the Nerja Nomads. Steve states “We have been blessed with the help of Nerja Town Hall with special mention for Daniel Rivas Mal­ dondo and Javier Losada of the Sports Dept who see the benefits of walking football in physical and mental health. This in the long term helps take the pres­ sure of the medical facilities in Nerja with preventative exercise in the over 50s. They were also instrumental in help­ ing to put the first ever Walking Football League Cup Final in Nerja. However Covid struck and the Cup Final had to be cancelled. Daniel and Javier have stated

they are keen to stage a walking football event in the town and it is hoped this can be arranged for early in the new year. Nerja Nomads boast an excellent so­ cial side to the club with members enjoy­ ing a refreshment and banter after ses­ sions which at the moment consist of the club’s alternative sport... Padel Tennis. Other benefits from the social side in­ clude regular get­togethers with other members and their wives. Steve, recently appointed to the League Management Committee, and his players can’t wait for things to im­ prove with Covid so they can wear their new strips kindly provided by their spon­ sors Cooltec Air Conditioning, the La Re­ queta Bar and Rockies Restaurant and who have all been extremely supportive. “We hope in the near future to have two teams, one over 50s and another for over 65s,” said Steve.
