EXTEND OR LIFT

ANDALUCIAN President Juanma Moreno will decide whether to ‘extend, make more flexible or tighten’ re­ strictions across the region on Sunday, November 22. Juanma Moreno will pre­ side over the meeting in which the evolution of the pandemic will be analysed and it will be decided what step to take next. The restrictions, that came into force on Novem­ ber 10, were originally sup­ posed to run out or be ‘rein­ forced’ on Tuesday, November 24. The Minister of the Presi­ dency, Public Administration and the Interior, Elías Ben­ dodo, at the press confer­ ence after the weekly meet­ ing of the Governing Council, warned that if the curve of contagions, hospital admis­ sions and ICU admissions is not reduced “we will have to continue taking measures, whatever is necessary.” Bendodo also assured that the objective of the Andalu­ cian Government with these measures is that by Decem­ ber, “if the curve allows it, the economy can be made more flexible and open a lit­ tle to save the Christmas season.”

RESTRICTIONS: On Sunday it will be decided if they are extended, lifted or allowed to continue. He insisted that “we can­ not relax for a minute” be­ cause “we are risking the fu­ ture of an entire generation.” Juanma Moreno warned on his Twitter account that a “slight drop” in the inci­ dence data of the Covid­19 coronavirus in the au­ tonomous community “is still insufficient” and went on to emphasise that “we cannot relax for a single

minute.” Meamwhile, the approval of the Junta de Andaluicia budget could be positive news for hospitals in Axar­ quia and the Costa del Sol. This year alone, the Junta has made significant funds available to allow for the opening of the Estepona Hospital, the work to start again on the badly needed San Pedro Health Centre and most recently the allocation

of €75 million to allow for the extension and upgrading of the Costa del Sol Hospital in Marbella. Approval of the Junta’s

2021 budget could have been blocked by the Socialist and Green opposition and had to be accepted by Vox in order for it to go through smoothly.

If for any reason, the bud­ get had been overthrown, then numerous projects benefiting municipalities across the area would have been put in doubt as would necessary economic support for many who have suffered financial hardship due to the Covid­19 pandemic. Regardless of politics, if the region is to recover and regenerate, it needs its politicians to be seen to be cooperating to a great ex­ tent with the aim of getting hotels open again and tourists flocking back with the hospitality industry re­ ceiving support from both local councils and equally importantly from the Junta itself. Now the spotlight will re­ turn to Juanma Moreno as he and his executive decide on Sunday whether the cur­ few and other restrictions will be lifted, extended or al­ lowed to continue.

Babies with Diabetes Asymptomatic cases higher

WORLD DIABETES DAY on November 14 began with a busy morning in La Cala when La Cala Lions Diabetic Support Group started their campaign to test the public for glucose levels. Despite the showers, more than 60 members of the public were tested and many more stopped by to speak to the Lion’s nurses and ask advice on dia­ betes. One visitor was Sháe a two­year­old lit­ tle boy who has had diabetes for over a year now. He came along with his family including his brother, with a ready made sign to let everyone know diabetes can even appear in babies too.

To begin with Sháe’s parents had to test him every two hours day and night so the pressure was enormous. Thankful­ ly with the newer technology he now wears a sensor which can sound an alarm on a dedicated phone whenever his lev­ els are dangerously low or too high. This day was possible thanks to the co­ operation of Katya and the Foreign Resi­ dents Department and further testing will be possible on November 21 at the La Cala Town Hall and November 27 in Mijas Pueblo as a quick test could save your life. Malaga great flood DOES anyone remember the Malaga great flood 31 years ago? November 14, 1989 saw one of the largest floods that Malaga has suffered so far in its history, and is a day that anyone who experienced it is unlikely to ever forget. ‘Blankets’ of water, mud and reeds rushed through the area, destroying homes, businesses, schools and hospitals. On that historic day more than 30 years ago, 160 litres per square metre fell on the capital in just over an hour. Thousands of people disappeared for hours as the streets became channels and cars and vans were swept into the sea. Taps ran dry despite water surrounding the buildings, and homes and businesses lost electricity. Sadly, eight people lost their lives in the Malaga great flood and more than 1,400 people were left stranded from their homes.

MORE than half of those infected with coron­ avirus in Malaga are asymptomatic, which could be helping the virus to spread more easily. Health experts reported that in the province of Malaga, more than half of people who have Covid­19 are asymptomatic, that is, they do not show any signs that they have contracted the virus (fever, cough, muscle aches and headaches, tiredness, loss of smell and taste, vomiting and diarrhoea). “That more than half of the Covid cases are asymptomatic in the province of Malaga is tremendously dangerous, since the absence of symptoms makes the virus more easily transmit­ ted,” a medical expert told SUR. They also said that asymptomatic people should not be held re­ sponsible as they do not know they are spread­ ing the virus. The source stressed that it is essential to strict­ ly respect the protection measures established by the health authorities: the use of masks, maintaining a safe distance of at least one and a half metres, practising frequent hand washing and ventilating enclosed spaces. “Prudence is key to curbing infections,” the ex­ pert said, adding that many of those infected without symptoms in this second wave are young, while the number of symptomatic cases is greater than in the first.

Exchange your Driving Licence WITH the countdown to Brexit creeping in, one of the key ac­ tions for UK Nationals living in Spain is to exchange your UK dri­ ving licence for a Spanish one, but recently a lack of appoint­ ments has made this difficult. Marbella Homes the Elderly A BRAND new and innovative project to house the elderly has been announced in Mar­ bella. Public care homes for the el­ derly have been few and far between in Malaga and Mar­ bella, so the announcement that a facility is finally going to be built is very welcome news. The facility will be a public one and cater to around 125

older adults with varying dif­ ferent needs and from various backgrounds. This ambitious project will be presented for tender to construction companies and development specialists with a view to the much­needed pro­ ject and homes within it, to be completed on or before 2023. The site of the construction, Trapiche del Prado was for­

merly a sugar mill, and also fa­ cilitated the making of wine and brandy, in fact, the ‘old mill’ was donated to Marbella, by the maker of wines and brandy ‘Mateo Alvarez’ nearly 30 years ago. This area will see repair con­ struction and revitalising, mak­ ing the site useful again and using land previously dormant and in ruin.

Junta Rejects Union

THE Junta de Andalucia rejected the proposal to declare Mijas and Fuengirola as one single urban nucleus, meaning that crossing the streets between Mijas and Fuengirola will be subject to a fine! Despite talks and proper plans being submitted, which would have meant creating a single urban health centre that would help everyone in the area during these tough pandemic times, the Jun­ ta de Andalucia shot them down. The regional administration rejected the request, made by the Local Council on Monday, November 9, to combine the two mu­ nicipalities, since they share several roads between them. Mayor of Mijas, Josele González, spoke of his disappointment: “We learned this morning that the Junta de Andalucia has rejected the proposal that we had made and which was subsequently joined by the Fuengirola Town Hall so that both municipalities were understood as the same urban nucleus.” González continued by saying that “we understood that it was a coherent proposal with which it was intended to avoid confusion between the residents of both municipalities, but that the Board has unfortunately rejected. “I doubt very much that there is a situation in Andalucia as con­ crete as the one we have here, with two consolidated urban areas, through which thousands of people pass daily.” Speaking about how the rules will be enforced since the plans to join Mijas and Fuengirola as one was rejected, the major stated: “a comprehensive application of the rule will be made, so we have ordered the Local Police to carry out informative work among the residents. “What we are never going to do is start a campaign to perse­ cute the neighbours, since we understand that where controls have to be carried out are on the highways and accesses to cities, with the collaboration of the regional police, the Guardia Civil and the National Police and influence those who can generate or cre­ ate a source or risk of infection, which is where we really have to focus all our efforts,” he concluded.

New Primark in Marbella

A NEW Primark store has creat­ ed 300 jobs in Marbella. Primark has announced the opening of its new store in Mar­ bella, to be located in the La Caña­ da Shopping Centre. Located in a former gym, the new two­storey store aims to employ more than 300 people. The news comes as a big boost to the local economy, after the brand announced major losses due to lockdowns only a few days ago. Primark has more than 45 establishments spread through­ out Spain and has a workforce of more than 7,000 employees. Primark has invested more than €11 million in the new Mar­ bella project and are asking peo­ ple who are living in the area to apply for the much­coveted posi­ tions as soon as possible. Brit teen rescued A BRITISH teenager was res­ cued after falling 10 metres down an embankment in Malaga. The teenager was knocked unconscious after the fall. The 16­year­old was hang­ ing out with friends near Coín’s Paseo del Obispo aque­ duct when she slipped and fell. The teen’s friends luckily managed to flag down a pass­ ing Guardia Civil patrol, who called emergency services. Medics had to make the pre­ carious descent on damp and slippery mud in order to sta­ bilise the girl, before transfer­ ring her to the ambulance. Because of the unevenness of the ground, the Guardia Civil, medics and firefighters made a human chain to pass the stretcher up onto solid ground. The teenager was trans­ ferred to the local health cen­ tre in Coin where she recov­ ered from her injuries.

Children in need ONE of the many people who actively support and pro­ mote the work of the Food Fairies is Stéphanie McDon­ nell who at the Bar Tuta in La Cala de Mijas is involved in taking wrapped parcels and dry food for distribution by Kara Caradas. Speaking to Euro Weekly News, Stéphanie said “I sup­ port the Food Fairies be­

cause they are a great charity that helps struggling families in our local communities and this year more than ever we need to come together and help those that are in need. “We have seen with the lockdown in March what a great sense of community we all had for those terribly affected and how Kara and the fairies stepped up and

helped so many and contin­ ue to do so.” Her latest idea was to run a raffle whereby anyone who donated Christmas gifts for children in need would re­ ceive tickets, but so many lo­ cal companies donated vouchers that she realised that something bigger had to take place, so she volun­ teered the bar to host its reg­ ular Rock and Roll Bingo event with the draw. The State of Alarm has meant that it has to be a day time celebration and tomor­ row Friday, November 20 at 1.30pm, guest presenter John Sharples will get things moving, but unfortunately there had to be a limit of the number booked to attend (each of whom will enjoy a selection of tapas) and with entry just €5 it soon sold out. Anyone however who still wants to help, can buy a new toy, wrap it up with a note for the age and gender of the child for which it is intended and drop it off at Bar Tuta or dry food is also welcome and if you do this before the event, you will also have a chance of winning one of the prizes.

Positively Blue lunch WHILST we are all focusing on Covid­19 and how it affects us, there are still equally pernicious and very long­term illnesses which have been killing people for years and still need to be conquered. One of those is male prostate cancer which is now much better understood and can be dealt with if caught early enough and this is where the Costa del Sol charity Positively Blue is so important. Like Positively Pink which exists to check those who may be susceptible to Breast Cancer, Positively Blue does the same for Prostate Cancer. Spain school dropouts SPAIN continues to be the EU country with the highest num­ ber of school dropouts, despite an improvement in the past decade. The rate of abandonment of studies and professional train­ ing is 17.3 per cent, which is seven per cent higher than the European average of 10.2 per cent, according to the Euro­ pean Committee’s Education and Training Report. The rate has gone down steadily over the past 10 years, but the study concludes that the national objective of get­ ting it down to 15 per cent, seems “unattainable”.

The report shows significant differences between regions. Galicia, Madrid, La Rioja and Valencia have reduced the per­ centage of school abandon­ ment, while it has gone up in Cantabria, Cataluña and Navar­ ra. It also reveals that there are more boys dropping out of school prematurely (21.4 per cent) than girls (13 per cent). The only country which comes close to Spain in the number of dropouts is Malta with 17.2 per cent, followed by Rumania (15.3 per cent). Those with the best rates are Lithua­ nia (4 per cent) and Greece (4.1 per cent).

Last chance pesetas

THE countdown is on to get rid of any old peseta notes and coins you may have lying around the house. According to the Bank of Spain, at the end of September this year, almost €1.6 billion worth of pesetas were still unaccounted for and had not been handed in. If you were living in Spain before the euro came into circulation in 2002, it may be worth checking if you have any, as not only can you still return them to the Bank of Spain, some notes and coins are worth up to €20,000 to collectors. However, December 31 this year is the final deadline for returning them to the Bank of Spain. This seems to have encouraged people to finally get the currency changed, as in the first week of November, €792,043 worth was exchanged, compared to the weekly average previously of just €170,000.

Fines for holding phone THE Guardia Civil may be able to fine drivers for having a mo­ bile phone in their hand even if they are not using it. The General Traffic Depart­ ment has reported that the pre­ liminary draft of a new traffic law contemplates that holding the phone while driving a vehi­ cle could lead to a fine. The new law, approved by the Council of Ministers, but still to go through parliament, is worrying Spanish drivers. Fol­ lowing the announcement that drivers will no longer be able to exceed the maximum limit on conventional roads by 20km/h to overtake, it is now known that simply holding the phone, if seen on the numerous traffic cameras which are placed on roads throughout Spain, could lead to drivers to lose six points off their licence, that’s double the current fine. It is hoped that the measures will lead to fewer people getting distracted at the wheel. The new law is not likely to come into effect until the end of 2021 or the beginning of 2022.

Reptiles rescued

A TOTAL of 300 rare and pro­ tected reptiles worth around €800,000 on the black market have been rescued by the Guardia Civil in a pan­European and Europol operation with 21 people from two criminal groups arrested. There continues to be a huge market for protected wildlife across the world even though the international CITES agree­ ment restricts the capture and transportation of many differ­ ent species. The traffickers had a number

of different ways of bypassing the law, with ‘mules’ transport­ ing eggs across borders which were hatched and then used for breeding or use of fake doc­ umentation (supplied by ‘tame’ vets) which allowed the reptiles to be imported into Spain. Incredibly, amongst the rep­ tiles found was a Giant Tortoise (an endangered species found only on the Galapagos and the Seychelles Islands of Aldabra and Fregate) which has a lifes­ pan of up to 200 years.

Drug pay back time AN Essex builder jailed for drug trafficking has been ordered to hand over £1.2 million of assets J Warner, 49, from Canvey Island, was given a confiscation order totalling £1,220,192 at Kingston Crown Court on Monday, November 9. Warner was warned he would serve up to a further seven years in prison if he failed to pay the full sum within three months, and would still be liable for the money. Officers from the Organised Crime Partnership - a joint National Crime Agency and Metropolitan Police Service unit - arrested Warner in October 2018 for supplying multiple kilos of cocaine, cannabis and amphetamines across London and Essex. He later pleaded guilty to four counts of conspiracy to supply controlled drugs and three counts of money laundering, and was sentenced to eight years and four months in prison in June 2019.

NO evidence of fraud THE US presidential poll was the most secure ever, says a statement released by cybersecurity experts, in the clearest repudiation yet of Donald Trump’s claims. A coalition of US federal and state officials have said they have found no evidence at all that votes were compromised or altered in last week’s presidential election, rejecting unsubstantiated claims of widespread fraud cited by Donald Trump and many of his supporters. The statement from cybersecurity experts, which ‘trumpeted’ the November 3 election as the most secure in American history, amounted to the most direct repudiation to date of the outgoing president’s efforts to undermine the integrity of the contest. It echoed repeated assertions by election experts and state officials over the last week that the election unfolded smoothly and without irregularities.

Axed From This Morning THIS MORNING’S Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford are being replaced in their weekly slot by Alison Ham­ mond and Dermot O’Leary. Eamonn and Ruth, both 60, have been presenting the show for 14 years. An insider said: “They have real warmth. It’s time for a change and they are perfect.” They added: “Eamonn is pretty furious and every­ one feels for him and Ruth, they are well­liked on the team, but sometimes tough decisions have to be made.” Furious This Morning viewers have vowed to boycott the show after it was revealed that favourites Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes would be replaced. The pair, who have presented the show since 2006, are said to be ‘furious and upset’ by the move ­ and so are fans, who declared that they would no longer watch the show.

Crypto Scammer Caught A CRYPTOCURRENCY scammer has been arrest­ ed in Tenerife following an investigation into a Ponzi­type scam that saw €378,750 stolen, af­ fecting at least 26 people. National Police and Guardia Civil officers have arrested the chief executive of a company based in the Canary Islands that, allegedly, was defrauding people through investments in cryp­

tocurrencies using a Ponzi­type scam. Officers also raided four company offices, lo­ cated in the towns of Adeje, Arona and Cande­ laria, where they have seized three high­end ve­ hicles, abundant documentation and electronic devices, as well as, numerous bank accounts in the name of the investigated persons, which have now been blocked.

Graffiti artists under arrest POLICE arrested 99 graffiti artists over €22 million worth of damage caused to trains and stations. The investigation was launched in September after 6,741 complaints were filed by RENFE Operadora and Metro Barcelona between 2017 and 2019. In a two­pronged sweep, National Police located the first 51 suspects who lived outside Catalonia, before joining forces with the Mossos d’Esquadra and ar­ resting the remaining 48 in the provinces of Barcelona. Among those detained is a graffiti artist who worked

in a ticket office through a company subcontracted by RENFE, and a young man from Milan who was detained on the runway after landing at

Barcelona­El Prat Airport. Police, RENFE and Metro Barcelona estimate the damage caused to be in excess of €22 million.

Pope Likes Bikini Pic THE official Instagram account of Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State, was caught ‘liking’ the raunchy picture by a user who managed to grab a screen­ shot documenting this memorable, and hilarious, occasion. The racy picture featured bikini model Natalia Garibott dressed in an outfit resembling a Catholic school girl and had ‘Pope Francis [is] horny as hell’ according to the Barstool Sports account who shared the screenshot. Natalia also joined in the fun after being informed about the pope’s ‘like’ on her picture, noting: “At least I’m going to heaven.”

Ikea buying back clients’ furniture GREEN FRIDAY: Helping to live a more sustainable life. IKEA has a Black Friday deal un­ like others: they are buying back their clients’ furniture. The Swedish multinational’s Friday is not Black, it’s Green Fri­ day, and it is expected to in­ crease their sales between Mon­ day, November 23 and Sunday, November 29. One of the company’s main objectives has always been to promote responsible buying as well as the so­called ‘circular economy,’ which is why they have decided to buy back their clients’ furniture for twice what it is worth, while helping to fight climate change. The second­hand furniture will later be restored and sold by Ikea so people can buy it at a re­ duced price. The promotion will be carried out in Spain and 27 other coun­ tries. Ikea has said they plan to find people who need what others no longer want and want to help everyone live a more sustainable life.

Store Closures WH SMITH is set to close 25 high street stores which means the British retailer will have to start cutting nearly 200 jobs. It was reported on Thursday, No­ vember 12, that the company has strug­ gled to survive the pandemic in the UK which has led to a pre­tax loss of £280 million (€313 mil­ lion). Sadly, it now means a loss of jobs and the closure of UK high street stores, mainly small­ er outlets, after the chain saw business fall 19 per cent. In contrast, sales through the retail­ er’s main website soared by more than 240 per cent.

Botched restoration

THE botched restoration of a sculpture in Palencia, has once again put Spain in the press for its less than perfect art work, and experts don’t know whether to laugh or cry. The 20th century sculpture, on one of the city’s most em­ blematic and visited buildings, which houses the central office of Unicaja, has become the lat­ est example of a questionable restoration job, and having gone unnoticed until now, has re­ ceived many complaints. The building, in Calle Mayor, was opened in 1923 and has reli­ gious images on the outside. The face of what was a smil­ ing shepherdess has now be­ come a popular image to take a picture of, and it is the brunt of THE Interior Ministry has been sentenced to pay €137,000 to a family in Almeria who were in­ formed 27 years later of their son’s death. The man, who was 24 at the time he was reported missing in December 1990, had in fact died in a car crash. His family was not informed of this until June 2017.

AT around 7pm ET, November 11, YouTube crashed around the world and users were left baffled as thousands of videos seemed to disappear in front of their eyes, while others simply wouldn’t load. An outage map on Down Detector displayed the outage throughout the world. In addition, The Verge reported that YouTube TV and Google TV were also out of commission during this time. YouTube tweeted immediately that they were aware of the problem and trying to fix it, saying: “If you’re having trouble watching videos on YouTube right now, you’re not alone ­ our team is aware of the issue and working on a fix. We’ll follow up here with any updates.” A couple of hours later, however, the issue appeared to have been resolved, with YouTube tweeting that the disruption had been fixed across all devices and YouTube services.

UK’s travel corridor expands EIGHT destinations have been added to the UK’s travel corridor list while Greece, apart from five islands, has been removed. The eight additions are the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Iceland, Chile, Cambodia, Laos, Qatar, The National Court said that it is impossible to quantify the moral damage done to the family and the pain they have suffered, but ruled that his mother should re­ ceive €65,000 and each of his sib­ lings €18,000 in compensation. Fire probe after death NATIONAL POLICE are investigat­ ing a fire in which an 87­year­old woman died and her carer suf­ fered smoke inhalation. The fire on the fourth floor of a 16­storey block of flats in the cen­ tre of Madrid happened at around 10.15pm on Wednesday, Novem­ ber 12.

According to sources, firefight­ ers pulled the elderly woman's body from the burning flat, and SAMU medics confirmed her death at the scene. They then treated the victim’s 56­year­old carer for smoke inhalation. The rest of the flats in the block were not affected.

Health authorities recall noodles THE Health authorities have issued a recall for a type of noodles which are reportedly dangerous for people who are gluten intolerant or allergic. The Buckwheat and Sweet Potato noodles from China, distributed by Terrasana, have been sold in Andalucia, Valencia region, Catalonia, the Canary Islands and Aragon. The Spanish Agency for Health Safety and Nutrition has advised anyone who is intolerant or allergic to gluten not to consume this product. There is no danger to peo­ ple who do not have these allergies or intolerance. The warning was issued by the Dutch authorities re­ garding the lack of warning of the gluten content on the packaging. The product has the expiry date 30/06/2022 and is sold in packets of 250g. It will be removed from sales channels.

Cost cutting THE Spanish government has capped the maximum price of sur­ gical masks for sale to the public, meaning they will cost a maxi­ mum of 72 cents each. The aim is to ensure everyone can afford the compulsory Covid protection. The price, including IVA, will be reviewed as often as the mar­ ket price surveillance requires. In April, the Interministerial Commission for the Prices of Med­ icines (CIPM), a collegiate body of the Ministry of Health, agreed on a maximum price of 96 cents. The commission has set this price after reviewing the current market prices of surgical masks in Spain, both in large stores, as well as in pharmacy offices and online sales in order to guarantee free competition below the maximum price set.

Ski Season plan THE Baqueira­Beret resort in the Pyrenees is all set for ski season, with Covid­19 protection plans in place. The global pandemic has seen many plans and leisure activities cancelled or altered this year, and ski season is no exception. The Baqueira­Beret resort has now joined a host of other resorts to let you enjoy the snow. The Baqueira plans include limiting the capacity of the cable cars to six people, to ensure adequate social distancing and the chair lifts will be open. Masks will be required to be worn at certain times, including when queuing. Everything is set at Baqueira for the season to start in a few weeks and run into April 2021. Residencia restrictions get tougher IT’S a fact: Spanish authori­ ties are tightening up the re­ quirements for ‘residencia’ for British passport holders, albeit in a rather chaotic manner: whereas the Cadiz immigration office will be satisfied with the usual docu­ ments (medical/healthcare insurance and a bank certifi­ cate showing sufficient funds), the Malaga office is requesting evidence that ap­ plicants do have ‘real and certain’ residency in Spain, most probably to filter appli­ cations and avoid saturation. WARNING: charity workers WARNING: Spanish police have issued a national warning over thieves posing as charity workers and drugging their victims The National Police has warned of scammers operating throughout Spain posing as NGO charity workers for a group called Clean Hands. Officials report that the thieves put a little gel sanitiser on your hands and ask you to smell the product. The hand sanitiser is actually a drug which renders people unconscious; once they regain consciousness, they find that they have been robbed. The National Police advises people not to engage with anyone offering products, surveys etc on the streets, regardless of any ID or proof they may be carrying. They also ask members of the public not to accept drinks in bars from anyone they do not know. As these dangerous scammers are operating throughout Spain, police have asked members of the public to share the warning as much as possible.

Vaccine roll-out THE Pfizer vaccine could be rolled out in the UK next month claims co­founder of German firm BioNTech. Professor Ugur Sahin told Sky News the first UK patients could re­ ceive the jab nation­ wide mid­December. But the scientist be­ hind the vaccine said it will depend on whether it is licensed by the UK regulator in time. Emirates Losses EMIRATES posted massive first half-year losses after it announced that it lost €2.9 billion in the first six months of the year. The Dubai state-owned airline’s holding company announced the losses on Thursday, November 12, after the carrier said global flight and travel restrictions meant revenue dropped 75 per cent to €2.7 billion as passenger traffic fell 95 per cent to 1.5 million. Emirates Group, which includes the airline, said its workforce had shrunk by 24 per cent to 81,334 staff as of September 30 after temporarily suspending operations this year at the height of the coronavirus pandemic.

Spain optimistic for future A LENGTHY report issued on November 13 by the Interna­ tional Monetary Fund (IMF) has concluded that Spain’s fi­ nancial problems because of the Covid­19 pandemic may not be as dire as originally forecast due to a strong third quarter. Much depends on the re­ sults of the fourth quarter 2020 which will be nega­ tively influenced by the re­ turn to the State of Alarm and there could well be a further slowdown if work

restrictions continue for too long. There are a number of external problems which impact on the Spanish economy, a high percent­ age of which depends on tourism and Spain has been hit harder than most Euro­ pean economies with GDP (Gross Domestic Product) still 8.7 per cent down on last year. One area which could im­ pact hard and is difficult to forecast with any certainty

is that of bad debts rising ‘disproportionately’ hitting banks profitability as even­ tually government loan sup­ port will be withdrawn. Effectively, the IMF rec­ ommends that the govern­ ment should concentrate on supporting viable busi­ nesses and accept that there will be a number of weaker companies that do not survive. Initially the Spanish gov­ ernment forecast a 7.2 per cent growth in 2021 but in

the budget forecast, this has been upped to 9.8 per cent as the European Union recovery fund comes on­ line, but the IMF think that this is overoptimistic and that 7.2 per cent is more likely to be the final result. Whilst not forecasting a dreadful year ahead, the IMF did warn “Policies need to continue to mitigate the risk of the recession morph­ ing into financial sector stress with even higher real and social costs.”

Then in 1988 after his wife had left him, it is believed that he set fire to his home and died at the age of 47. Now despite setting up franchises in different locations, it has become a vic­ tim of the Covid­19 pandemic and is clos­ ing for good with up to 100 job losses.

Avatel relocates to Madrid HQ

TELECOMMUNICATIONS: The new Madrid office. SPAIN’S sixth largest fibre optic telecommunications company Avatel, has relocat­ ed its headquarters to Madrid in order to imple­ ment its growth strategy at a national level. The operator has decided to move from Marbella (Malaga) to the Spanish cap­ ital for “operational and business strategy reasons,” focusing on bringing broad­ band connectivity to rural areas through fibre optics, explained its CEO, Ignacio Aguirre. As a result of this geo­ graphical move, Avatel has reorganised and resized its different departments, so that it can execute its strate­ gic plan for the next two years to continue to add

business in rural areas where there is limited com­ petition. With a staff of over 400 people, it says that pro­ motes local employment in rural areas, given that a large part of its workforce is distributed on the ground throughout the company’s commercial and technical network. As a specialist in the so­ called Empty Spain, Avatel benefited from the lock­ down as there was an in­ crease in demand for con­ nectivity, generated both by the online work of regular residents and by the transfer of thousands of people from big cities to their second homes to minimise risks in the pandemic.

Economy needs stimulus THE Bank of Spain chief economist, Oscar Arce, believes that the European economy needs more stimulus in December or there could be serious financial consequences. He argues that a continued softening of prices is not just bad for Spain but for all members of the European Union and said in a recent statement “we are seeing an increase in the portion of goods whose prices are increasing very little or falling, which is an indication of the risk.” It is now down to the European Central Bank to make some swift decisions including additional Quantitative Easing.

I await the slings and arrows LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT RACISM is a weapon, against which the only real defence is common sense. Unfortunately, this precious commodity is being kept firmly under lock and key by UK politicians, who are petrified that using too much of it could send the whole racial issue spiralling completely out of their control. In fact, their utterly biased ethnic appeasement attitude is merely creating a dangerous criterion that could ultimately bring the whole social order tumbling around their ears. The beleaguered white majority of UK citizens are now not only riddled with guilt, but utterly petrified of saying or doing the wrong thing in case they find themselves at the receiving end of retributions which could ultimately prove fatal. The recent resignation of football Association chairman Greg Clarke is a case in point. Now, I confess I have no idea of past indiscretions or opinions of

this man, but if he was pressured to resign in the light of the interview I witnessed, then his persecution was an absolute disgrace. During his address, he was actually acting in defence of black footballers, decrying the fact that they received a great deal of abuse on social media. So why did he ultimately receive so much pressure and racist accusations that he considered the only recourse was for him to resign? Well as ludicrous as it may sound, it was because he referred to black footballers as ‘high profile coloured players.’ Whaaaa!? Along with many others, I was truly under the impression that this was one of the preferred and polite ways of referring to the black community? Wrong! Apparently, the expression was ‘outdated and old fashioned.’ Ah, now I get it, not in vogue any more eh? Goalposts on the move again! Keep up everyone; yesterday’s acceptable terms are apparently today’s insults! Well I don’t buy it. This is simply using the racist card to keep the white community confused and on the back foot. Even Meghan Markel on her trip to Africa referred to herself as a

‘woman of colour.’ Three days after Clarke’s resignation, I saw a highly placed police woman in the north of England discussing diversity in the police force. During the TV interview she made a number of references to ‘coloured’ members and ‘people of colour’ on the force. So where were all the screams of indignation? Why wasn’t her letter of resignation on the desk of the commissioner the following morning? Don’t be silly, she was of Asian descent herself. Racist accusations only apply if you’re a ‘privileged’ white. Well I personally have had all this brain washing and dangerous nonsense up to here. The whole exercise positively reeks of unfair bias and unacceptable reversed racism. And I abhor racism! I’m also interested to notice that UK companies are now targeting most of their Christmas wares at only 13 per cent of the population and that ITV’s much loved Good Morning programme is about to be recast! It’s a pretty tough time here MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I LIVE on the Costa del Sol and, all in all, we are having a pretty tough time here at the moment what with there not being any holidaymakers, curfews and not being able to have freedom of movement from one municipality to another, which, in principle, I guess seemed like a good idea, but in practice is ridiculous. In some places here technically you can’t cross the road because one side of the street is in one town and the other side is somewhere else. All shopkeepers are really struggling to exist right now and a few cafes and restau­ rants, that I’ve been going to for years, say they are getting zero help from their local councils and some are considering closing down for good. So I was pretty amazed to see that Fuengirola had decided to spend millions of euros on ripping up the square in Los Boliches and rebuild it. This was a perfectly good square. It had seating, a children’s playground, fountains and, at Christmas, always had a beautiful tree. Where are their brains? How can you justify spending this amount of money on

a project like this? It’s like a complete kick in the nuts to all the locals who are being refused any help. Postpone it because it’s totally unnecessary. If you have some spare money, fix the potholes everywhere that kill your tyres and wheels. Whilst I’m ranting at the local councils, what’s this new idea of allowing restau­ rants to stick astro turf and tubs of flowers in the few parking spaces that are available outside their premises? It’s absolutely pointless because you are actually eating out in the road. There aren’t enough parking spaces around any­ way. I was sitting at one place the other day and watched a driver reversing into the space next to the ‘new extension’ and actually hit the tub of flowers and knocked it into the table nearest to it. It looks exact­ ly what it is ­ tables in the road. Maybe it’s just another money raising idea. All I know is that it looks stupid and could be pretty dangerous considering how folks drive out here. Finally I’ve had a very sad reality check the last few weeks. Some of my heroes Sean Connery, Ray Clemence, Bobby Ball and Des O’Conner have passed. I guess what that tell me is how important it is to enjoy people whilst they are here. Email: mikesenker@gmail.com

WHAT a welcome distraction the Biden vs Trumpty Dumpty show was ­ from the UK government’s ongo­ ing Covid chaos and staggering in­ competence. With every toy that Trump ‘bigly’ threw out of his pram we moved fur­ ther away from the farce of all the UK’s U­turns ­ and evidence that its leaders couldn’t organise a bun fight in a bakery, or a press conference in a pandemic. Boris Johnson is the court jester that the Conservatives foisted on a nation that found Jeremy Corbyn un­ appealing. Boris has been shown to lack discipline and attention to detail during the floods at the start of the year; the ongoing Covid problem; the school meals fiasco; and, above all, the Brexit negotiations which will deliver few promises made in 2016. WHEN we were born into this world, we didn’t know the meaning of limitation. We didn’t under­ stand the word fear or self­doubt. We never com­ pared ourselves to others as we were learning to walk. It didn’t matter how many times we fell, we would get back up and try again until we succeed­ ed. Some of us would start to walk as early as nine months old, others took much longer but it didn’t matter. We didn’t care, we concentrated on ourselves. Why do so many of us doubt our own abilities? Why do we compare to others? Why do we set limits in our life? Why are some more confident than others? It all boils down to our peers, how we were raised, and who we were surrounded by whilst growing up. Limitation, self­doubt, procrastina­ tion, and a negative mindset is taught. You may have had an amazing upbringing with confident parents, however, an Uncle, Aunt, friend of the family may have been negative, may have in­ stalled fear into you unintentionally. As children, our brains are like sponges. They absorb every­ thing around us. If you see fear as a child, there is a higher chance that you will take that fear into

adulthood. If, as an adult, you are surrounded by negative people, you too will become negative. We give away our power by our thoughts. We forget who we are and start to exist rather than live our life to the full. The good news is, you can change these habits at any age, but it has to start with you! Here is an exercise for you all to complete. You will need a pen and paper to answer these ques­ tions: 1. What is your biggest desire? 2. How do you want to feel? 3. Where do you want to be? 4. If you could achieve anything in the world, what would it be? Once you have answered these questions, I’d like you to answer the following next to each one... A leading nutritionist be­ lieved a lot of people put too many ingredients in their home­made versions and they should be 50 per cent liquid base, 25 per cent fruit and 25 per cent veg. So how can you make the most from your smoothie? The base should be a low fat liquid such as coconut water or skimmed milk and not fruit juice and fruit should be limited to a single serving such as a cup of berries or a single piece such

as apple or banana to limit sugar intake, then fill with vegetables. If your smoothie is replac­ ing a meal such as breakfast you can include a few filling foods such as oats but if it’s a snack or after a workout, keep it lighter. Keep all of the pulp from fruit and veggies in your smoothie for much­needed fibre and make sure you have them as part of a healthy diet. I crave positive quotes when I don’t feel myself! The struggles we go through with bipolar disorder gives us a unique position to let others see our beauty. For years I didn’t think I had a purpose. I was just existing. But then I found something meaningful and that is sharing my journey. People have messaged saying that my story was their story. Every time I shared my story, my bipolar illness had less control over me. Like everyone I have known defeat, suffering, and struggle. When someone finds out they are talking to a person who has walked the walk of

mental illness they tend to open up. Often for the first time. I tell my story so others can begin to tell theirs. I remember listening to people talk about their story and I got a feeling of calmness in my chest. I realised I was not alone. I was not weird. That my feelings were real. That the thoughts in my head were not normal , but were in fact ‘our kind of normal.’ Those of us who have experienced the madness, the pain and suffering have a deep understanding of the experiences and feelings of others. We are beautiful people. You have lived with your dark days - the overwhelming anxiety, the racing thoughts, the deep darkness that only those who have suffered the depression of bipolar disorder can understand. You have come so, so close to giving up. But you were given a second chance. A chance to make a difference not only with your life but a chance to make a difference to other people like you. Clever because the government won’t have to pay for this lockdown because we are not fully locked down. It is a scam designed to save the Spanish government mon­ ey not an initiative to save our lives! But do these new re­ strictions keep us safer? There is NO evidence that closing borders or locking down have any correlation to Covid deaths. The best sourdough bread recipe ever! son, we are locked down in our municipalities which is frustrating as many areas are without the lovely shops and larger better supermarkets. Coronavirus has a lot to an­ swer for, but maybe cooking at home can take our minds off the ongoing problem for a while. For thousands of years bread has been a staple food for many cultures prepared from a dough of flour and wa­ ter. Throughout recorded his­ tory it has been a prominent food in large parts of the world and is one of the oldest man­made foods, having been of significant importance since the dawn of agriculture. Bread can be leavened by various processes such as nat­

ural occurring sourdough mi­ crobes, using the natural yeast from the air around us which is a traditional method like my grannie used, but industrially produced yeast or high­pres­ sure aeration is more com­ mon. Commercial bread usually contains additives to help im­ prove texture, colour, shelf life, nutrition, and ease of manufacturing quantity. The best bread that I have ever eaten is the bread that my grandmother used to make! The recipe goes back hundreds of years and after all those years, when we seem to get bread so perfect, we stop making and baking it and start buying it! Bought bread is generally

packed with additives, colourants and aeration agents which makes it as light as a feather and often taste­ less, we then ask ourselves, whatever happened to home­ made bread? I love to re­create some of the lost recipes and traditions and one of our most lost skills is making bread. We know that bread is high in carbs, so I have been looking at how to make bread with fewer carbs. I created a bread made from powdered nuts to create a nut flour instead of a wheat flour. Nuts I am and regulars have seen me buying tons of almonds and eggs to replace wheat flour and it works really well except that it tastes noth­ ing like real bread and my

grandmother’s bread still sticks in my head as the best ever. My grandmother used to make a sourdough and so I re­ cently started recreating it for our restaurant. First you need to make a starter which is to get the natural yeast activated into the flour, by that I mean it finds the wild yeast from the air in our environment and al­ though it’s just flour and wa­ ter mixed together (nothing else at all) in eight/10 days it will be bubbling (fermenting) naturally and smelling a little sour like vinegar. Then you take a spoon full of it and add it to equal quan­ tities of flour and water, prove it and then bake it. The result is amazing, the flavour is fan­

tastic and once you have made the starter (which takes patience) you never have to make it again, as long as you always save some, it will go on forever and if you don’t want to make bread daily, simply put the starter in your fridge. The fridge will slow down the bacteria and hold it until you need it again. Simply take it out of the fridge a couple of days before you need it to make sure that it’s active again. You will need to feed your starter with equal quanti­ ties of flour and water every day for at least seven days (like feeding a pet) but it’s worth it! I made my first batch using this original recipe below and it was perfect, so damn per­ fect and so delicious that you will want to make it again and again. I remember that during lockdown I was doing videos on how to make bread. Check out the videos on YouTube. But do spend a few hours putting this special sourdough bread recipe together, you will never regret it, because it is the best bread ever!

Sourdough bread with fantastic flavour The starter 50g of rustic flour 50ml of water Mix together and leave in a bowl overnight for at least 12 hours to enable it to pick up the natural yeast from the air. Feed it every day with equal amounts of water and flour, and stir well in. Feed it for about 10 days until you see the dough rising up the side of the glass jar and until it tastes sour. You cannot make this bread until the starter has had about 10 days. Making the dough 800g of strong flour 450 ml of tepid water 10g of salt 320g of the sour dough starter (above)

Method Bring the ingredients together as a dough and stretch and work the dough well kneading for at least 15 minutes. Then roll it into a ball and prove for three hours. Cut the dough in half and prove again for two hours. After two hours turn the dough out and slash the top with a sharp knife and then bake at a high temperature of 250ºC at the top of the oven. Tip: Put a tray of warm water in the bot­ tom of your oven to create some steam which will help the bread rise better. Bake the bread for 35 to 45 minutes. Turn out and rest and then slice and serve. It’s the best bread you will ever eat by far!
