ALTHOUGH residents of San Pedro Alcantara still have to queue outside the dilapidat­ ed health centre whilst the new one remains incom­ plete, there is brighter news for those on the other side of Marbella as €75 million is to be invested in the Costa del Sol hospital. Mayor, Ángeles Muñoz to­ gether with representative of the Junta de Andalucia Elías Bendodo visited the works that are being under­ taken in the Emergency and External Consultation areas of the hospital on Saturday October 31 and confirmed the news. The resurrection of the ex­ pansion for the hospital came about after the Junta settled a dispute with the original builders of the long­ deserted extension building and it will also be able to of­ fer better parking for visi­ tors. Bendodo said “the Andalu­ cian president has instructed the Minister of Health to start working on updating the project to expand the hospital which was left half completed by the paralysis of the previous government. “We are finding around €75 million for the comple­

The mayor also congratu­ lated all of the staff at the hospital for the hard and dif­ ficult work that they had un­

dertaken since the outbreak of the pandemic. Things are looking up for health on the Costa del Sol,

with the Estepona Hospital due to open within a few months and the La Linea hos­ pital up and running already.

Clearly 2020 has seen a huge demand on the re­ sources of the health service along the coast and to some extent, the Costa del Sol hos­ pital has had to carry the brunt because it has such a large catchment area realisti­ cally running from Manilva to Fuengirola and inland. So much has been made of the delays of the upgrading of the San Pedro Health Cen­ tre, but it now appears that the relationship between the Marbella Council and Junta de Andalucia is bearing very positive results. If it is finally completed early next year, it will take some of the pressure off the main Marbella hospital as will the brand new facility in Estepona. All of this comes too late for the spike in the coron­ avirus pandemic although Costa del Sol Hospital ap­ pears to have coped well within its current capabilities.

Burglary warning A WARNING has been is­ sued as a group has been staking out empty proper­ ties on the Costa del Sol. Police have warned of four individuals who are allegedly staking out emp­ ty properties for potential squatting or burglary. The three men and one woman are reportedly dressed in black hoodies and driving a large bur­ gundy­coloured Volkswa­ gen vehicle with blacked­ out windows. The four were disturbed on Wednesday evening, Octo­ ber 28 as they staked out a property on Mijas Road. It is currently unknown whether the individuals are checking out the prop­ erties for possible burglar­ ies. Local Police have been advised and are searching for the group, but in the meantime warn people in the area to be extra vigi­ lant.

LOCAL BUSINESSES: Protested in Orange Square. MORE than 100 business owners gathered in Orange Square outside the Marbella Town Hall to complain about the lack of support they are receiving from the council even though at the beginning of the pan­ demic it had promised much, but had deliv­ ered little. The protestors were dressed in mourning black on Friday October 30 and carried placards saying RIP Commercio Marbella as representatives asked what had happened to the €132 million supposedly earmarked to support businesses and compared Mar­ bella unfavourably with Mijas where the council quickly paid financial support di­ rectly to small local businesses. This is a non­political group made up

mainly by traders open in the centre of Marbella, but they recognise that there are many shops in trouble throughout the mu­ nicipality and their spokesperson told me­ dia interviewers that unless something was done to give support not just now but for next year as well, there could be many clo­ sures before Christmas.

Easier parking IN order to make playing at the Racket Club more enticing, Benalmadena Council has come to an arrangement with Reserva del Higuerón to allocate 40 of their parking spaces to be used by visitors to the club.

Spanish Legion THE Marbella Council has unveiled a plaque on the main façade of city hall which is dedicated to the Spanish Legion which is celebrating its Centenary year in 2020 as an act of thanks for all that it has done for Marbella.

Flood precautions WITH the warning of heavy rainfall, the Estepona Council has increased its endeavours to clear debris and overgrown vegetation from streams and dry river beds which started in September, but is still to be completed throughout the municipality.

Caring Community IN collaboration with Natalie Fantuzzi Real Estate Marbella, La Scala hosted a fantastic Gala Charity Dinner on Friday, October 30, which won the hearts of the community. The charity event raised a fantastic €3,762.00 for people in need in the Elviria community struggling due to the Covid­19 pandemic. Each Tuesday Cari­ tas Marbella provides food shopping to help home­ less and struggling families registered with the charity and collections are made each week be­ tween 6.30 and 7.30pm. The money raised from this event alone will provide six weeks of shopping for those in need. The six­course menu which cost €55 per person with 50 per cent of the menu price going to charity was a huge success. Music from Martin McCafferty and Peet Rothwell entertained the guests and La Scala made a wonderful donation offering all guests from the evening a 30 per cent off voucher for their next visit.

Local marathon TWO members of the San Pe­ dro Athletics Club have joined an elite group by suc­ cessfully completing a 300­ kilometre mountain race in just under 72 hours. Víctor Manuel Doblas Bernal and Pedro Jesús Domínguez Rincón are not professional athletes, but run for the fun of it and were looking for a new challenge, so decided to test themselves against two of the toughest trail running events in Spain, the Gran Vuelta Valle del Genal and the Ultra Trail 100

Millas Sierras del Bandolero, known as the 8 Andaluz. To be considered success­ ful with this challenge, you have to complete the circuits in no more than 73 hours which they did easily, but what’s more they believe that they covered more than the prescribed route as their GPS broke down and they got lost and had to backtrack a few times. Having achieved this tri­ umph, they are considering what their next challenge should be.

Kinder Eggs Ice Rinks POLICE raided the home of mother, Vicki Holland, 36, and her 42-year-old partner, Russel Cox in December 2019. In the house in Newport, South Wales, officers discovered £1,600 of cocaine hidden in plastic capsules inside Kinder Eggs. The mum-of-four admitted possession with intent to supply a class-A drug - some of the cocaine found in her home was already prepared for sale in £20 and £30 packages. Roger Griffiths, prosecuting, said: “Evidence on the phones demonstrated both were involved in supply of cocaine.” Holland’s partner Russel Cox was also charged with intent to supply.

Farmer killed mum JOHN BOUND, 59, shot his 80-year-old mother, Gwendoline Christine Bound, before turning the gun on himself at their home in Abergwili, Wales. An inquest heard that Mrs Bound died after being shot in the chest while her son died after suffering head injuries just eight days after the beginning of lockdown in March. Mr Bound, a herd sheep farmer, had confided in friends that he was concerned about the lockdown, worrying that he would not be able to check on his animals. He is said to have told them that “he didn’t know how he would cope.”

With tables limited to six guests and social distancing maintained, it just goes to show how successful evenings can still go ahead with just a little bit more management and organisation. The Christmas dinners will be made in Sam’s Bar, Los Boliches where people will come and pick up their dinners or have them delivered by a caring Danish lady called Isabell Mørup who lost her grandma two months ago and decided she needed to give her life meaning again. Covid-19 has affected so many people, not only financially but mentally and hearing of genuine and caring people like Gary and Lauren who just want to make other people’s Christmas as special as they should be, is amazing. Gary Adamson has always been a keen supporter of charities and in the past has raised over €3,000 for Cudeca by playing in a 24-hour pool competition. He has always been a keen believer in giving back to the people in need. The Christmas dinners are completely free for the people in need, and Gary and Lauren have made the steps extremely easy to receive a dinner. Penguin Pay Day A F O R M E R birdkeeper in the U K has been jailed for 32 months after stealing penguins from a B ritish zoo and selling them on Facebook. On Friday, October 30, B radley T omes, 25, a former birdkeeper was sentenced for the theft of H umboldt penguins named, Pablo and Penny from L akes S afari Z oo during his time working there as an aviarist. It was discovered that T omes broke into the zoo more than once to steal a range of rare and exotic animals including egrets, penguins and macaws. H e was finally detained after one of the buyers contacted a vet because the birds were in particularly poor health.

Sanofi is responsible for the Vaxigrip Tetra flu vaccine and the vaccine is applied in several autonomous communities in Spain, stressing there are “no safety problems.” While Sanofi didn’t specifiy in which commu­ nities it is being used, information in various media at the start of the flu campaign indicated the regions include the Valencian Community, the Canary Islands, Galicia and Andalucia. Vaxigrip Tetra is one of two vaccines involved in controversy in South Korea, where its application was linked to the subsequent death of at least 59 people.

THOUSANDS of German police plan to hunt down lockdown rule­ breakers, according to Interior Minister Horst Seehofer. In an announcement on Thursday, October 29, it was confirmed that since the stricter lock­ down measures were put in place, the German government were mak­ ing plans to deploy thou­ sands of its federal police officers across the coun­ try to enforce them. The radical measures will start on Monday, November 2, after Chan­ cellor Angela Merkel and Germany’s state leaders agreed on Wednesday, October 28 that in order to stop the further spread, deaths and in­ fections of the coron­ avirus, an emergency month­long lockdown, including closing restau­ rants, gyms and the­ atres, was needed.

Peacocks Prompt Police Action A GROUP of wild peacocks roaming around the village of Henfield in West Sussex has prompted police action following resident com­ plaints. The future of the pea­ cocks in the village has been placed into uncertainty af­ ter Sussex Police said they were forced to act after the “patience of some long­ term residents had worn thin.”

A group of villagers how­ ever are fighting to save the beautiful birds after the suggestion they might be ‘humanely dispatched.’ A few weeks ago, a police notice asked villagers for their help in locating the birds after they were threatening local wildlife, saying if they were unsuccessful rehoming them then ‘humane dis­ patch’ would be required.

AIR MALTA is set to guarantee flight operations ‘even with one person on board,’ according to Economy Minister Silvio Schem­ bri. The new scheme will see its winter schedule provide some peace of mind for customers after many have had their travel plans ruined by the Covid pandemic. Speaking about the plan, as long as laws and restrictions per­

140 Dead at sea AT least 140 migrants heading for Europe have drowned off the coast of Senegal after their boat caught fire and capsized, according to the UN migration agency on Thursday, October 29. The horrific incident occurred after a boat carrying over 200 peo­ ple sank a few hours after leaving the fishing town of Mbour, 100 km (60 miles) south of the capital Dakar, on Saturday, October 24. The boat heading for Europe, which is said to be one of the deadliest to be recorded this year, was engulfed by thick black smoke as people swam frantically towards a local rescue boat in or­ der to get away.

14-year-old Arrested A 14-Y EA R-O L D girl has been arrested in south Lon­ don on suspicion of murder after a man was stabbed to death in Crawley. The incident happened in the Three Bridges area of Crawley, West Sussex where a 24­year­old man was found dead in the street at 9pm on Tuesday, October 27. The teenage girl was fi­ nally arrested on suspicion

of murder when she was found by police on Wednesday, October 28, whilst a 21­year­old man from London was also ar­ rested on suspicion of as­ sisting the offender. The man was treated by the emergency services, in­ cluding paramedics and an air ambulance doctor, but they could not save him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Humiliated Barrister A BLACK barrister in Essex, who was mistaken for a defendant three times in one day, is set to meet the head of the Courts service. ‘Humiliated’ Alexandra Wilson was challenged by a security officer, a solicitor, and a clerk at a magistrates’ court in Sep­ tember after being mistaken for a defendant. According to the BBC, the 25­year­old from Essex did re­ ceive an apology, however, in a meeting due next month she is hoping for ‘real change’. “It was quite humiliating to be shouted at, and to try to re­ main calm and focus on what I was trying to do knowing also that I’m then about to present a case in that same court­ room,” Ms Wilson said.

Boeing Cuts JET airline maker Boeing plans to cut thousands of ex­ tra jobs after suffering more losses. Now, Boeing plans to cut its workforce by around 30,000 people this year, which has risen significantly

Next Level UK high street and online retailer Next is outper­ forming its competitors after reporting better­ than­expected sales over the last three months amidst Covid chaos. Supply constraints at its warehouses meant it could only focus on full­ price sales, meaning full­ price sales in the third quarter (to October 24) were 2.8 per cent higher than a year ago. Next is set to see a full­year pre­tax profit of £365m, a total which is £65m higher than was forecast in September. Shares in Next are also up 1.5 per cent. Although despite the excellent news, this fig­ ure is way down on 2019’s figure, in fact, it is less than half the £748m achieved last year.

Legend Lost COMEDY star Bobby Ball has died of coronavirus at the age of 76, his manager Phil Dale con­ firmed. A statement read: “It is with great personal sadness that on behalf of Yvonne Ball, and the family, and Tommy Can­ non, I announce that Bobby Ball passed away at Blackpool Victoria Hospital on October 28, 2020 at approximately 9.30pm.” Bobby had been tak­ en to the hospital for tests as he started with breathing problems. On Thursday, October 29 the Equality and Human Rights Commission found that there were three separate breaches of the law ­ for members harassing Jewish members, Mr Corbyn’s team stepping in and interfering with complaints of anti­Semitic bullying, and the party failing to provide training to deal with those complaints. However, responding to the findings, Mr Corbyn said that he didn’t “accept all of the report’s findings.” He refused to apologise and said instead: “The scale of the problem was also dramatically overstated for political reasons by our opponents inside and outside the party, as well as by much of the media.”

Neglect COLD-HEARTED Sharon Goldie, 45, accused her 13-year-old daughter Robyn of faking illness and went to the pub instead of looking after her, the High Court in Edinburgh heard. Her daughter was dead in the living room of their Wishaw home from a perforated ulcer when Goldie returned later on the night of July 26, 2018. SCOTTISH miners con­ victed during the 1984­ 85 strike are to be par­ doned by the Scottish government. More than 500 of around 1,500 miners arrested during the na­ tional dispute were convicted. A collective pardon, which will require new legislation, would also apply to miners who have since died. The Justice Secretary said: “There is no doubt that many min­ ers suffered great hardship because of the strike and convic­ tions arising from it. “Although the strike took place some 35 years ago, it is clear from conversations I have had with many miners the pain they feel is still very raw to this day.”

The Ryanair flight had taken off from Malaga and was only around 20 minutes from landing when the fight broke out. Police were seen on board the plane after it landed in Manchester and arrested one male pas­ senger on Monday, Octo­ ber 26. A spokesman for Ryanair said: “The crew of this flight from Malaga to Manchester requested police assistance upon ar­ rival after several passen­ gers became disruptive shortly before arrival. “This is now a matter for local police.”

It is estimated that the current number of admissions in ICU could soar to 371 patients by the end of November with the current capacity only being a total of 100.

This would see multiple elective and non-elective non-urgent treatments being further postponed as ICU surge contingency plans would see numerous operating theatres transformed into wards. Manchester’s Nightingale Hospital has also been prepared to open and will take both coronavirus and non-coronavirus related patients to alleviate the pressure on existing NHS services.

Cross-immunity from the paediatric tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis vaccine could protect children against coronavirus, an investigation carried out by Pedro A Reche, from the Immunology Department of the Complutense University of Madrid has found. Covid-19 severely affects the elderly while children are largely protected, said the researcher. “In this study, the possible crossimmunity induced by paediatric vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 has been evaluated, concluding that the vaccine for diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (DTP) may be responsible for said protection,” said Reche.

tion (as with Bankia and Caixa Bank) as this will cre­ ate stronger operations, more able to cope with a possible recession especial­ ly if unguaranteed bad loans (including mortgages) grow and they cannot be sold on to third parties. Currently the Spanish government benefits from the purchase by the Euro­ pean Central Bank of its low interest bonds, but at some stage repayment will most likely be required.

Spanish GDP rises

Passing on old butane bottles I have lived in Spain for 17 years using the normal butane gas bottles. Now we are changing to all electric. We are pensioners and soon will not be able to handle the heavy gas bottles. I have five gas bottles which I inherited when we bought our bungalow. They are empty and I want to get rid of them. Empty gas bottles are openly advertised on the Internet and sold in street markets against the rules. So it seems that you can safely give them to your friends.

THE third quarter of 2020 has seen a remarkable turn­ around in terms of volume with GDP up by 16.7 per cent according to the National In­ stitute of Statistics (INE) meaning that Spanish Gross Domestic Product has fallen by 8.7 per cent as opposed to 21.5 per cent in the previous quarter. There has been a significant increase in demand for goods both nationally and equally importantly internationally which has been one of the main reasons for the increase even though the number of hours worked during the quarter has fallen slightly. Unemployment continues to rise from 15.3 per cent last quarter to 16.3 per cent this quarter, some 350,000 people

bringing the jobless total to 3.7 million and several hun­ dred thousand more are in ERTE (furlough) but receiving financial support from the government. The Spanish government wants to stand by its socialist principles so that it can in­ crease financial support for the most poverty stricken, in­ crease pensions, introduce a basic income scheme and in­ ject greater funding for the health service, but this all comes at a cost. As expected, there will be more taxes on the better off with the introduction of high­ er capital gains and business taxes and the government has the funding promised by the European Union to fall back on.

BRITISH banks are both heroes and possibly villains with re­ gards to the amount of money they have leant to businesses but also, they have reaped a pretty good reward from the UK government. The PA news agency was told, following a freedom of in­ formation request, that the government has paid at least £65 million in interest to the banks by way of support to en­ courage that the loans are made. A further freedom of infor­ mation request by the British Business Bank found that they were charged at 5.1 per cent, lower than commercial loans but still much higher than the Bank of England rate of 0.1 per cent.

Currency outlook: US dollar rallies amid renewed coronavirus panic, Brexit drama rocks the pound

Euro EUR/GBP: Down from £0.91 to £0.90 EUR/USD: Unchanged at $1.17 The euro has had a rough time through October as a second wave of coronavirus cases swept through Europe, prompting countries to impose increasingly strict re­ strictions. These restrictions have already started to have a demonstrable impact on the Eurozone economy, with a contraction in this month’s PMI figures stoking fears the bloc faces a double­dip recession. With France and Germany imposing new lockdown measures through Novem­ ber, and other Eurozone countries likely to follow their lead, the economic out­ look in the bloc is looking increasingly bleak, which may drive the euro lower in the weeks to come. Pound GBP/EUR: Up from €1.09 to €1.10 GBP/USD: Up from $1.28 to $1.30 The pound has fluctuated over the past month, mostly as a result of heightened Brexit uncertainty as the UK and EU clashed over the terms of their future trade relationship. While the back and forth over a deal created considerable volatility in GBP ex­ change rates, particularly with Boris Johnson declaring at one point that trade talks were ‘over’, a prevailing sense of cautious optimism ultimately saw Ster­ ling strengthen through October. Going forward, this volatility in the pound is only likely to become more pro­

nounced, as the ongoing uncertainty sur­ rounding Brexit is set to be compounded by rising speculation that the UK will need to impose a second national lock­ down amidst an alarming surge in coron­ avirus. However, there remains considerable upside potential in the pound if UK­EU talks move in the right direction. US Dollar USD/GBP: Down from £0.77 to £0.76 USD/EUR: Unchanged at €0.85 After rocketing higher in September, the US dollar has found itself giving some ground this month amidst shifting market sentiment and concerns over the US labour market. This weakness was most prevalent through mid­October as markets were cheered by perhaps misguided optimism that a new US stimulus package would be agreed before the election. However, the US dollar ended the month on a high after markets were gripped by fresh panic over the coron­ avirus pandemic, with investors flocking back to the safe­haven currency as the prospect of new lockdowns threaten to derail the recovery in the global econo­ my. Looking ahead, we expect the ‘Green­ back’ to continue to benefit from safe­ haven flows in the coming weeks due to heightened coronavirus jitters, as well as lingering political uncertainty in the wake of the US presidential election. Don’t hold yer breath! LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I HAVE always maintained that political correctness would be the death of the UK. Witnessing the facts emerging from this week’s inquest into the Manchester bombing it appears my predictions have tragically begun to materialise. According to his testimony, the security guard responsible for allowing this despicable piece of pig swill to continue his mission of death admitted he hadn’t challenged him because he ‘didn’t want to appear racist!’ This was despite the monster transparently ticking every suspicious box on the list. The colossal back pack he was carrying should alone have aroused suspicion, even if it had been carried in by the Pope himself! No, I’m afraid this witness’s admission simply shows us that all those who advocate political correctness and the suppression of free speech, basically have the blood of all those young people on their hands. To my

mind they are all traitors and are guilty of treason. If we had allowed thousands of young able bodied Germans, to enter and be succoured in the UK before the First World War, there wouldn’t have been a second! If we had also decided to subsequently implement laws of Political Correctness and the suppression of free speech it would have been akin to handing the German interlopers weapons of mass destruction and the country would have been destroyed within weeks. Someone truly does have to get a grip. Scotland Yard has admitted there are at least 5,000 Jihadists in Britain alone, with more than 30,000 operating in terrorist cells, and reinforcements are arriving every day! How much more will it take for our politicians to act ­ or even acknowledge the true menace of Islamist extremism? In the last two weeks there have been three major terrorist attacks in France. Three of the innocent victims were actually beheaded in public by individuals screaming Allahu Akbar. ‘Ah,’ bleat the so­ called moderates, ‘but the majority of Muslims are not like that.’ No and not all the Germans were Nazis. There are 25 million Muslims

living in Europe (yep!), six million in France alone. So where are all these ‘moderates’? Why they are not out packing the streets and city centres bearing signs denouncing the extremists, along with their religious leaders decrying these violent and unacceptable acts of violence in concerted efforts to bridge the enormous gulf that exists between our two societies? Well don’t hold yer breath! The advice given by the oft misquoted John Stuart Mills and reiterated by JF Kennedy comes glaringly to mind. ‘The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men should look on and do nothing.’ I’m also getting extremely peeved at being made to feel guilty for being white. Call the police! CONSULAR MATTERS S U R E LY all of us at some point in our lives have needed to call the police to request their help, in Spain it’s easy to call the police, the difficulty is in calling the right po­ lice. In Spain we have, depending on where you live, the National Police, the Guardia Civil, the regional police and the Local Police, which makes it really difficult to know where to go to request help you may need. The National Police and the Guardia CIvil belong to what is called ‘State Security Forces and Bodies’ and their functions are to promote citizen security, preventing disorders

and crimes, as well as the prosecu­ tion of these. The functions of both bodies are similar, although not always the same, the initial difference is where they carry out their work. The National Police is part of the Ministry of the Interior and occupies an important part of the Spanish ter­ ritory, with the exception of the Au­ tonomous Communities that have an Autonomous Police, such as Catalo­ nia (called Mossos de Esquadra) or the Basque Country (Ertzaintza). Those known as ‘Municipal’ are the Local Police and are part of each City Council. However, not all municipalities have Local Police, as it is a decision made by each of the municipal gov­ ernments. The Local Police carry out their

function exclusively in the locality to which they belong and therefore their functions are limited to that area. They must work with the National Police and the Guardia Civil. So depending on where you live and what matter it is, you should call 091 (National Police), 092 (Local Po­ lice) or Guardia Civil 062, although a good alternative is to call the emer­ gency number 112 if it is an impor­ tant matter and they will refer you to the proper police. Another option is to download the application for mobile phones ‘AlertCops’ which is also available in English, and puts you in contact with the appropriate police, and it is a useful tool for many cases in which you are a witness or victim of a pos­ sible crime.

Contact Redefined

THE Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has rede­ fined Covid­19 ‘close contact’ guidelines after a prison guard was infected after only 17 min­ utes of contact with positive in­ mates. On Wednesday, October 21, the CDC redefined the guidelines for ‘close contact’ with someone who has tested positive for coro­

navirus as a 15­minute interval or several brief encounters that add up to 15 minutes within a 24­hour period. The change was prompted when a 20­year­old prison guard contracted the virus from in­ mates who tested positive after spending only 17 minutes in to­ tal with them over a series of brief encounters.

Heathrow Loses Crown

LONDON AIRPORT: No longer the busiest. PARIS has overtaken Heathrow as Europe’s busiest airport af­ ter they reported falling passenger numbers and rising losses. Heathrow slashed its outlook for next year’s passenger num­ bers after reporting on Wednesday, October 28, a loss of £1.5bn in the first nine months of the year due to the coron­ avirus pandemic. Heathrow has always been seen as the busiest airport in Eu­ rope, however, during a tough year, they have ceded its long­ held crown to Paris.

UNMS2020 - We did it!! MARBELLA MOMENTS BY NICOLE KING LAST week I celebrated my fifth United Nationalities of Marbella Summit. It has become quite the event even if I say so myself, with an increasing num­ ber of influential community members gathering each year to coordinate our efforts. Receiving so many people to radio and TV as I have makes it a unique posi­ tion to see from a different vantage point where we all fit together. At the end of each year I like to ‘Sum It up’ in my summit! Of course none of this would be pos­ sible without my headline sponsor for the past four years Linea Directa. Not only do they change and add policies in response to feedback from our annual events to better cater to our needs, they truly support our community ef­ fort and have also got their Road Traffic Safety Foundation involved in our Zero Hero incentive. I introduced my son­in­law at the

event to show the guests how to use the breathalysers after the main course, to get a more ‘real feel’ on see­ ing the results for themselves. It turned out to be a far more touch­ ing moment than anticipated as he had been the barman at a venue a young la­ dy left from, not to return home, due to a drunk driver. This was part of the presentation of our Zero Hero incentive ­ positive reinforcement for safer alco­ hol use for safer roads. The rest of the luncheon at the Har­ bour where we all ‘just happened’ to coincide was on a much more light­ hearted note with a great mix of busi­ nesses, charities, and associations with common goals and ethics. The idea of coordinating charities and schools with perhaps an inter­ school ‘challenge’ to help consolidate our efforts was very well received. Chris Long, Principal of the English In­ ternational College presented this UNM category. Sustainability and plastic free initia­ tives was headed up by team captain An­ gela Lafferty, also with a lot of support from those present. Contributors to the event for the second year, the Rotary

Club Marbella Guadalmina, were particu­ larly interested in this category with their Plastic Soup incentive being amongst the priorities on their list. Youth Internships and Job Opportu­ nities was presented by UNM team captain Jeremy Fergusson and our town councillor Cristobal Garre spoke on the support offered to help local businesses best make it through the current situation. Kara Jaye Caradas is UNM captain for the more vulnerable and spoke about the Food Fairies and Hadas Caradas events coming up. Other emblematic charities who made presentations in­ cluded Collective Calling, Cudeca, Age Concern, Arboretum, Mi Moana and Plastic Free Seas to name but a few. Georgina Shaw was once again a su­ perb MC, my cameraman Pablo Mar­ tinez also outstanding, as is the photog­ raphy by Sam Ho. Thank you Lily van Tongeren for helping get everyone in and organised once again this year. A huge thanks to Michel and Steven for my beautiful flowers and balloons and an enormous thank you and well done to The Harbour Marbella: sheer excellence!

I really dislike all politicians MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man BY the time you read this hopefully Donny, the snake oil salesman, will no longer be POTUS and I won’t have to worry about him any more. Believe me though if Biden starts do­ ing crazy things I’ll be on his case too. Because, as I’ve said many times, I am not coming at this from a political point of view. I dislike all politicians. People have continually said that Trump has done wonderful things. Well, when I say people, I mean Don­ ny has said it all the time. So what has he achieved? What stands out to me is he managed to bankrupt his casinos in Atlantic City which is a really difficult thing to do. As an aside, I actually got thrown out of the Trump Taj Mahal, but that’s a whole different story. Then there are the most ridiculous things he has said this week whilst on his campaign trail. The one that stands out for me was when he stood there and said that he has done more for black people in the USA than anyone

else. When accused of being racist he actually said, “I am the least racist per­ son here.” Really? You actually want to say that you buf­ foon? Think about what he is saying which is yes, I am racist, but not as racist as other people here! So in a room with KKK members and a few of the Proud Boys, Donald, let me tell you, you’re only the least racist per­ son in the room if it’s 1942 Germany and you’re at a cocktail party hosted by the Third Reich and even then I’m not entirely convinced. Then last night, just to piss off all the women, he says, “I'm getting all your husbands back to work.” What century is this man in? Get them back to work so the little woman can go back to doing all her household chores without hubby getting in her way? It goes on and on. Covid will be gone by November 4 ac­ cording to him. Well that’s great news or is it just more of his absolute bull­ shit? I have faith in the American people to get it right this time, but if they don’t you will all have to put up with me go­ ing on about him for the next four years. Please get it right! Questions & Answers Why has a national curfew been put in place and how will it help? The National State of Alarm was announced on Sunday, October 25, and has been im­ plemented as a way of slow­ ing the spread of Covid­19 in Spain. The State of Alarm was approved so that a national curfew could be put in place. It also gives local governments the ability to implement re­ gional specific restrictions for their areas. Are flights still arriving to and leaving from Spain? Flights are still coming in and out of Spain, however you can only travel into re­ gions that have not closed their regional borders. Cur­ rently, at the time of print, the only areas that are still accept­ ing non­essential travel are Mallorca and Galicia. This will also be dependent on your country of origin and their travel restrictions. The Canary Islands has an ex­ tension to the BOE meaning that tourists can travel to the Canary Islands, however trav­ ellers will be required to have a negative PCR test which must be taken no more than 72 hours prior to travelling. Will I still be able to cele­ brate Christmas Day with my family? The current national restric­ tions is a max of six people, unless they are from the same household. However, regional restrictions are in place in every one of the 17 regions of Spain and the limits on group meetings vary according to the region. For example, in An­ dalucia, groups of more than

Does each region have the ability to change restrictions when it wants even though the State of Alarm runs until May? At this time, the regional governments can alter the re­ strictions within their bound­ aries any way they wish. They can also change the limitation of groups and people in public and private spaces. The only aspect, under the National State of Alarm that they cannot change, is the nationwide cur­ few until November 9. However, it is important to stress that any and all local mea­ sures can change with minimum notice. Furthermore, the National State of Alarm is being reviewed every 15 days even though it has been approved until May 9. Therefore, decisions being taken at the national level can also change every two weeks.

NEARLY 100,000 people are catching coronavirus every day as the pan­ demic reaches a “critical stage,” researchers warn. A study carried out by Imperial College London estimates the num­ ber of infections is doubling every nine days, with researchers warning we are at a “critical stage.” Authors say the pace of the epidemic is accelerating and something has to change. Swab tests on more than 85,000 people across England have shown an increase in R and that coronavirus infections are growing nation­ wide. An interim report led by Imperial College London and Ipsos MORI, which includes tests taken between October 16 and 25, shows that the prevalence of infection has more than doubled since the last round of testing, with 1.28 per cent infected.

What if I flipped this around for you and taught you to look at what you deem to be unacceptable in a positive manner? I’d like you to think of a situation, or an experience that you have felt as ‘unaccept­ able.’ (I’m sure 2020 can give you quite a few!) Take yourself to the moment and ac­ knowledge how it makes you feel, and the emotions that you attach to it. Empathise with yourself and understand that accep­ tance can sometimes feel challenging. Al­ low yourself to feel whatever it is you are feeling and relax about it.

The joys of being overly-sensitive MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED I USED to be overly sensitive about being overly sensitive. For those of you who identify with being on the more sensitive side, you probably will be nodding your head in agreement. For the rest of you, this collection of words is an insight into the world of those of us who live in this world with that overly-sensitive side of us. I have spent a great deal of my life thinking that being overly-sensitive was a bad thing. I’d try and try to change it, but you can’t hide emotion. My brain gets the logic of the situation, but my mind? Oh, my mind, it gives away how I really feel much quicker than my brain can stop it. I don’t think anyone realises how hard it can be on someone who feels deeply to be told “don’t feel so much” or “it’s not that big a deal” or “are you crying about that?” because for us, this is just the way we are made. What’s funny about when I’m told, “don’t be so sensitive” is that I actually get it. I know I’m responding that way and any of you that also are like me, well, I know you get it. The more we try to hide it the more it trickles out. We get that we are taking it personally. We try

to do it differently. But why? Why am I attempting to fix a part of my own personality? The more I realised, that there is absolutely nothing wrong with being overly-sensitive. Truth be told it is an awesome trait to have in life. For me, I am empathetic, I can see past the logic and feel the heart and oftentimes, when hope is lost, it allows me to identify a piece of good, of joy, in the normal. We get overwhelmed easily. Again, not by choice, but honestly, chaos makes our minds spin and our hearts go crazy. It doesn’t last, but it is hard in the moment. Don’t hide who you really are. So maybe I do cry if I miss the train, or if I can’t find my favourite pink top, or if I can’t remember the name of the song I’ve been singing all day. Someone has to. If you are overly-sensitive, well, that’s a fantastic thing. Here’s the truth I discovered in my own journey - the opposite of being overly sensitive was not caring. Living under the lie of “I’m fine” and “it’s no big deal” and shoving down emotions. I chose feeling. This can result in a post-pregnancy belly which women tend to think means they are overweight or their muscles need a workout, yet sit-ups and other abdominal exercises can in fact worsen typical problems such as back pain, digestive problems and even incontinence

Two events benefit Cudeca

ALTHOUGH the annual firework night at Villa Tiberio for the ben­ efit of Cudeca cannot go ahead this year because of the State of Alarm, the Cancer Hospice in Benalmadena is still desperate for funds and there are two events planned in November which will help in some way. Firstly, following the success of the first Mistique Charity Fashion show which raised money for Alzheimer’s research, a second show is taking place on Monday November 9 which will primarily help raise funds for Cudeca. Guy Fawkes & Chocolate Steven Saunders FMCGB The Little Geranium La Cala de Mijas www.thelittlegeranium.com THE story of Guy Fawkes is interesting. Guy Fawkes, was known as Guido Fawkes while fighting for the Spanish. He was a member of a group of provincial English Catholics who was involved in the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. He was born and educat­ ed in York, but his father died when Fawkes was about eight years old, after which his mother married a Catholic. Fawkes wanted everyone to be Catholic and fought for Catholic Spain wanting to restore a Catholic monarch to the British throne and planned to assassinate King James. Fawkes was one of 13 conspirators and he was put in charge of looking af­ ter the gunpowder. But the authorities were made aware and during the early hours of November 5, 1605 they searched Westminster

Palace and found Fawkes guarding the explosives. He was questioned, tor­ tured and he eventually confessed to planning to blow up the House of Lords. Immediately before his execution he fell from the scaffolding where he was to be hanged and broke his neck and died, thus avoiding being hung drawn and quartered! In the UK we celebrate every Guy Fawkes Night on November 5 by burning ef­ figies of Fawkes on the bonfire as well as lighting gunpowder in the form of fireworks. I doubt if the Spanish will celebrate, af­ ter all it was them who wanted to blow us up! But all of us expats and visitors/tourists over here could have a little party at home, since we have to be home by 11pm there is not much else to do! But what will happen this year with Covid? I would suspect that there will be no bonfire parties in the UK. The whole world has

become home central and so if you are planning to have a little party, then I have created some ideas for you, so keep reading. Why not put away the troubles of Covid for one night, eat, drink and be merry (not too merry or you will get arrested!) A crazy world we now live in but experts say, get used to it as it’s not going away! When we were boys (I have two brothers) my mum always did something special on Guy Fawkes night. I remember she would make toffee apples and she usually did some­ thing with sausages like toad in the hole and some­ times she would make a chilli con carne. My take on all this, years later, would be dishes like mini toffee apples made by cutting rounds out of apples coating them in caramel (made from sugar, water and golden syrup cooked to hard crack stage at 150ºC) served with home­made toasted marshmallow on lit­

tle skewers, toasted with a blow torch. They make ex­ cellent petit fours! Mum was a fantastic pas­ try chef and sometimes we would have chocolate pots with Cointreau as well as toffee apples and ice cream. I remember our friends being concerned that we were having Coin­ treau as we were kids. “It’s only half a teaspoon on each,” she would say! Her chocolate pots were delicious, memorable and pretty easy to make. I have changed the recipe a bit (she would turn in her grave) but only to stabilise it more and I make the marshmallow myself but it isn’t difficult. So, get your apron on and follow this recipe for my Mother’s pot au choco­ late with toasted marsh­ mallow, delicious! Home­ made marshmallow is so much better than the bought ones, softer and tastier, but obviously buy­ ing them will be a lot easi­ er!

Home-made Marshmallows makes enough for 8/10 portions 450 g of caster sugar 1 tablespoon liquid glucose 200 ml water 2 egg whites 9 leaves of gelatine soaked until soft Cornflour & icing sugar for dusting Method Put the sugar, water and glucose in a pan and boil and cook until mix reaches 130ºC. Pour this syrup into a plastic jug and whisk up the egg whites until stiff. Pour the syrup a little at a time onto the egg whites and whisk continuously until thick and glossy (about 5/7 minutes). Now sprinkle a baking tray with the cornflour and icing sugar and pour the marshmallow mix onto the tray, with a palette knife make it smooth and even. Leave to set on the side (not in a fridge) for two hours.

Pot au Chocolate The gelatine in this recipe is not essential but it helps stabilise the mixture so that it doesn’t be­ come too soft when left in the room. It is better to eat when it is not fridge cold and therefore, I add the gelatine. You can also use Aga Aga. Ingredients (Makes at least eight portions) 550g of good quality dark chocolate 6 egg yolks 160 g of icing sugar 500 ml of whipped cream to soft peaks 100 ml of warmed milk 4 gelatine leaves soaked in cold water to soften ½ wine glass of brandy A little Cointreau to finish Method Break the chocolate into even sized pieces and melt it in a glass bowl over a pan of boiling wa­ ter without the water touching the bowl. Stir until evenly melted.

Whisk the egg yolks and the sugar together for a few minutes. Now fold the melted chocolate into the egg mixture and stir in well. Gradually add the whipped cream folding it well into the chocolate mixture. Squeeze out the water from the soft soaked gelatine and add it to the warm milk and whisk in to avoid lumps. Now pass the gelatine through a sieve into the chocolate mix and whisk continuously. Finally add the brandy and whisk in and use a spoon to pour the chocolate mix into little ra­ makins or small dishes and set in the fridge for a minimum of two hours. To finish, drizzle with a little Cointreau on each pot and then drop two or three marshmallows on each pot and blowtorch (or lightly grill) to melt them over the chocolate. Serve straight away as soon as you heat the marshmallow.
