A FANTASTIC new network of nature trails was approved unani­ mously last Thursday. The series of nature trails will include the Maro­Barranco Sanguino, Cueva de Nerja­Almijara and Barranco de la Coladilla nature trails. The council explained that the trails will im­ prove “natural and cultural knowledge.” This has been a joint venture with nature and mountain lovers working with the Andalucian Mountaineering Federation technicians. With some of the trails relating to the old muleteers’ routes, there is need for new signage and maintenance of these historic routes. The municipality of Nerja has over 80 square kilometres, including protected land in the Natural Parks, much of which is within the Sierras Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama. It is hoped that the network of Nerja trails will reinvigorate the tourism of Nerja which has suffered during the Covid­19 pandemic. Nerja is the perfect place to enjoy the outdoors.

As a gesture of good wish­ es and solidarity with those in the San Luis Residence the mayor arranged later in the week to hang a large banner on the railings outside of the care home confirming the support of the entire town for those living and working there.

Jobless Stolen card figures soar UNEMPLOYMENT figures have soared in Axarquia with 4,800 more people out of work last month compared to October 2019. Data shows an increase of 856 unemployed people last month, taking the total to 21,979. The biggest rise has been seen in Velez­Malaga, which has recorded an additional 267 job seekers, meaning there are 8,613 registered in the region’s capital. Nerja’s unemployment fig­

ures rose by 238 in October; Rincón de la Victoria (155) and Torrox (138). Elsewhere in the region, the trend has been similar to that of the coast, except in some munic­ ipalities such as Almáchar, where October closed with sev­ en fewer unemployed than were registered at the end of September. Iznate and Comares also recorded five less unemployed people than the previous month.

WHEN a woman in Almuñecar discovered that her bank ac­ count had been defrauded of €127, she checked her hand­ bag and discovered that her wallet containing the bankcard had disappeared. The last time that she had used the card was the previous day at a local market and assumed that the wallet must have been stolen when she was there. She reported the loss to the Guardia Civil who quickly re­ alised that seven different transactions all for less than €20 had taken place as for that small amount of money, no pin number is required. Officers then visited the establishments where the card had been used to check CCTV and recognised a 26­year­old man from the town at each store who was known as a pick­ pocket and he has now been arrested.

The new regime seems not to deter everyone though, with people trying to circum­ vent the rules and heading into Motril last weekend for

shopping trips. The Local Police stationed at the Alcampo roundabout stopped six vehicles breach­ ing the rules and heading into Motril for a shopping trip and forced them to turn around after issuing them with fines. The work of the Local Po­ lice did not stop there last weekend, as one business

disobeyed the rules on open­ ing hours and five neighbours had complaints filed against them for skipping curfew. Surprisingly, no one was caught flouting the rules and trying to get to their second homes. It is expected that further restrictions will be brought in across Spain over the forthcoming days.

Those Little Arrows

Migrant Rescue THIRTY­TWO immigrants have been rescued from the sea of Alboran by the Guardia Civil and the Maritime Rescue services. The rescue was made near the island of Albo­ ran and saw 32 people rescued from two differ­ ent boats. The small boat had seven men on board and the larger boat which was found first, had two women and 23 men on board. All the migrants were being taken to the Port of Motril in Granada where the Red Cross was waiting to help. The Sálvame Gienah boat helped during the rescue and transported the immigrants to the Port. The immigrants are of Maghreb origin. Spain has seen an influx of immigrant landings, including a suspected landing recently reported in Mojacar.

WHILE many countries around the world are facing in­ creased restrictions and lockdown, Taiwan is giving hope as it has achieved 200 days without a locally transmitted Covid case. Taiwan, an island of 23 million, reached this impressive new landmark on Thursday, October 29, with its last local coronavirus case recorded on April 12. Experts say that Taiwan did several things right to avoid the delay of a second wave, including closing borders early and implementing compulsory mask­wearing from the out­ set. The country has had 550 confirmed coronavirus cases in total throughout the pandemic and only seven deaths.

DOCTORS in Houston, Texas studied more than 5,000 coronavirus patients and found that 99.9 per cent of cases were caused by a new virus mutation, called D614G. This D614G strain of SARS­CoV­2 is the most common version worldwide, ac­ counting for 85 per cent of cases, and first appeared in Europe in February.

Whale That Was Lucky A PERFECTLY placed sculpture of a whale saved the life of a train driver in Spijkenisse, near the city of Rotterdam, Netherlands, after it crashed through a barrier at the end of the tracks on Sunday, November 1. The lucky escape for the Metro driver hap­ pened shortly before midnight when instead of dropping 10m (32ft) into the water below, the con­ veniently placed artwork left the train suspended in mid­air, avoiding a hor­ ror crash. The sculpture erected in the water, titled Whale Tails, is the work of the architect and artist Maarten Struijs, and has sat at the end of the De Akkers metro station since 2002.

Man mauled Primark Expect Losses

Baby Milk Supplement PHARMACISTS in Italy have reported a surge in a baby milk supplement being snapped up by people looking to protect themselves against Covid. A video claiming that Lactoferrin, a product usually marketed as an immune system booster for babies, went viral and sparked people within Italy to flock to their nearest pharmacy in order to buy the ‘miracle’ product. The demand for Lactoferrin, an important immune­ supporting glycoprotein that is found in breast milk, has meant a large pharmacy in central Rome is now shifting up to 100 boxes of the supplement each week compared with just two or three in a month in normal times.

PRIMARK has warned of a £375 million hit from the loss of sales due to lockdown closures. Owners of the retail giants, Associated British Foods, estimated the significant loss due to the Covid restrictions as all Primark stores in Ireland, France, Belgium, Wales, Catalonia and Slovenia are temporarily closed. These closures already represent 19 per cent of its total retail selling space, but more damagingly, it said if the UK government was to go through with plans to close non-essential shops in England for one month

A MOTHER from Fuengirola has had custody of her child removed after the 18­day­old baby girl tested positive for cocaine. The baby is said to be suffering from neonatal ab­ stinence syndrome, a medical condition that occurs when a foetus has been exposed to drugs during pregnancy. The mother was put under investigation for prenatal abuse on October 8 after doctors at the Costa del Sol hospi­ tal in Marbella diagnosed the new­born. Supported by the Local Police, the Child Protection Service of the Andalucian government removed the baby from the custody of her parents.

AN airport boss has blasted the UK gov­ ernment over its “shocking” neglect of the aviation and travel industry following lockdowns and restrictions. Charlie Cornish, the chief executive of Britain’s biggest airport group, MAG, ac­ cused Boris Johnson of “effectively shut­ ting down his business.” The MAG group, which includes Man­ chester and London Stansted airports, is planning to lay off 900 staff.

A statement read: “It is with great personal sadness that on behalf of Yvonne Ball, and the family, and Tommy Can­ non, I announce that Bobby Ball passed away at Blackpool Victoria Hospital on October 28, 2020 at approximately 9.30pm.” Bobby had been tak­ en to the hospital for tests as he started with breathing problems. At first it was thought to be a chest infection but a test proved positive for Covid­19. Just last year, the leg­ endary comedy duo raised the roof at Salon Varietes Theatre during a visit to Fuengirola.

T he company announced a record 100 million daily active users and is now looking to expand into new genres after H onor of K ings became the top-grossing mobile game worldwide for September 2020 with close to $240 million (€206 million) in user spending, according to Sensor Tower. This represents an 87 per cent growth from September 2019. Honor of Kings, the multi-player role-playing game that allows players to hack their way through battle arenas, is the world’s most lucrative mobile game.

Vatican U-Turn ACCORDING to the Vatican, Pope Francis’s civil union laws comments “were taken out of context” as it moves to clarify their stance on the matter. Last month it was reported that the pope said homosexuals should be protected by civil union laws, stating, “Homosexual people have a right to be in a family. They are children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out or be made miserable over it,” adding, “What we have to create is a civil union law. That way they are legally covered. I stood up for that.” However, comments made in the documentary ‘Francesco’ were apparently taken out of context and the Vatican has let their bishops know there has not been a change in Church doctrine on homosexuals or support for same-sex marriage.

Kinder Eggs POLICE raided the home of mother, Vicki Holland, 36, and her 42-year-old partner, Russel Cox in December 2019. In the house in Newport, South Wales, officers discovered £1,600 of cocaine hidden in plastic capsules inside Kinder Eggs. The mum-of-four admitted possession with intent to supply a class-A drug - some of the cocaine found in her home was already prepared for sale in £20 and £30 packages. Roger Griffiths, prosecuting, said: “Evidence on the phones demonstrated both were involved in supply of cocaine.” Holland’s partner Russel Cox was also charged with intent to supply.

Moraira Migrants A BOAT carrying at least 12 migrants, landed on Sunday, November 1, at around 10am, on the beach of l’Ampolla de TeuladaMoraira in Costa Blanca North. Several locals who were sunbathing on the beach at the time described the newcomers as ‘very young’ and possibly of ‘Algerian nationality.’ The young men reportedly dashed from the boat with bags on their backs and fled on foot from the beach. The migrants headed for a nearby forest where they were intercepted by officials.

Farmer killed mum J O H N B O U N D, 59, shot his 80-year-old mother, Gwendoline Christine Bound, before turning the gun on himself at their home in Abergwili, Wales. An inquest heard that Mrs Bound died after being shot in the chest while her son died after suffering head injuries just eight days after the beginning of lockdown in March. Mr Bound, a herd sheep farmer, had confided in friends that he was concerned about the lockdown, worrying that he would not be able to check on his animals. He is said to have told them that “he didn’t know how he would cope.”

FRENCH pupils have now returned to school for the first time since a teacher’s beheading. Over 12 million pupils returned to school on Monday, No­ vember 2, for the first time since Samuel Paty was beheaded by an Islamist militant after he used cartoons mocking the Prophet Mohammad in a class on freedom of expression. Schools are said to have held a minute’s silence in honour of Paty, who was murdered in a middle­class Paris suburb on the eve of a two­week holiday. President Macron has described Paty as a “quiet hero.”

PORTUGAL Prime Minister Anto­ nio Costa pleaded with President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to de­ clare a Covid emergency after they recorded 4,656 new daily cases on Friday, October 30, the highest since the pandemic began. The plea from the Portuguese PM for the state of emergency, as a preventive measure to fight the

spread of coronavirus, came ahead of a televised address from the president on the evening of Monday, November 2. Portugal’s last Covid­19 state of emergency lasted six weeks when it was declared back in March. The government announced new partial confinements on Saturday, October 31.

Kabul students shot AT least 10 students have been killed by gunmen in an attack on Kabul University’s campus before exchanging fire with security forces. According to a senior Afghan government source and wit­ nesses, gunmen attacked the campus where they targeted the stu­ dents, injuring around 22 people on Monday, November 2. This latest attack comes after an airstrike on an Afghan school killed 11 children, despite government and Taliban negotiators meeting in Qatar to try to broker peace deals. It is unknown whether any of the gunmen died during their ex­ change with security forces. We offer our condolences to the family and friends of the stu­ dents who lost their lives.

PARTY TIME: But it breached Covid rules. A WHOPPING £10,000 fine has been issued to a house party organiser in Brighton for breaching Covid rules. The fine was issued by police after they broke up a party of more than 100 people at a property in Nor­ wich Drive at around midnight on Saturday, October 31. The university town is known for its parties and vi­ brant nightlife but under Covid regulations, this partic­ ular party was in breach of strict laws.

RUSSIAN oligarch Vladimir Maru­ gov, nicknamed the Sausage King, has been murdered with a crossbow, according to an inves­ tigation. Marugov was with his partner, who managed to escape through the window and alert police, in

an outdoor sauna at his country­ side estate when they were at­ tacked by two masked assailants, according to reports. The body of the Russian Sausage King, who owned some of Russia’s largest meat­process­ ing plants, was found by detec­

tives next to the crossbow that killed him. The attack occurred early on Monday, November 2, at the estate located around 40km (25 miles) outside the capi­ tal, Moscow, leaving the owner of the Ozyorsky and Meat Empire sausage factories dead.

situation, the teacher target­ ed some Muslim students in the class and asked them to apologise for the events that happened in France,” said one young student, named only as Hiba. He did Nazi salutes in class every time he talked about Hitler, she said. On Wednesday, October 28, the school board said Mr Ouellette has been suspended and they are “taking the situa­ tion very seriously.”

Fists fly A WOMAN on a Ryanair Malaga to Manchester flight marched down the plane to a male passenger and shouted “I’m going to smash you up” before a full scale brawl broke out. The Ryanair flight had taken off from Malaga and was only around 20 minutes from landing when the fight broke out. Police were seen on board the plane after it landed in Manchester and arrested one male pas­ senger on Monday, Octo­ ber 26. A spokesman for Ryanair said: “The crew of this flight from Malaga to Manchester requested police assistance upon ar­ rival after several passen­ gers became disruptive shortly before arrival. “This is now a matter for local police.”

Stoner Rage A VIOLENT stoner in the UK has killed his cat after it found his weed stash and ate it. Aaron Chapman, 29, from Bodmin, Cornwall, has been sentenced to jail for a total of four months after he was found guilty of stabbing his cat, Lord Biris, to death at a New Year’s party in 2018. Chapman discovered that the feline had gotten into his private marihuana stash and ate it during the night’s festivities. He became so enraged that he threw the cat to the ground and stabbed it repeatedly in front of traumatised guests. Magistrates said it was the ‘most horrendous, vicious assault on his own cat.’

Penguin Pay Day A FORMER birdkeeper in the UK has been jailed for 32 months after stealing penguins from a British zoo and selling them on Facebook. On Friday, October 30, Bradley Tomes, 25, a former birdkeeper was sentenced for the theft of Humboldt penguins named, Pablo and Penny from Lakes Safari Zoo during his time working there as an aviarist. It was discovered that Tomes broke into the zoo more than once to steal a range of rare and exotic animals including egrets, penguins and macaws. He was finally detained after one of the buyers contacted a vet because the birds were in particularly poor health.

Burgos Riots A PROTEST turned nasty in Burgos as members of the public took to the streets to protest the continued restrictions on public freedom in Spain. The Burgos area of Gamonal saw violence break out between protestors and police in the area on Friday, October 30, just as the evening’s curfew measures were coming into effect. The initial protests saw over a thousand people take to the

streets to demonstrate the actions being taken by the government. As the protesters started to dissipate, around 40 members were left on Victoria Street and started burning rubbish containers and causing significant damage to public property. However, their efforts were not supported by the local residents with many applauding the efforts of Local Police in containing the violence.

High and dry FIREFIGHTERS in Essex rescued three men believed to be in their late teens who became trapped inside an industrial tumble dryer in Essex. Crew from Loughton and Harlow were called to a derelict laundry site in Bower Hill, Epping at 6.35pm on Friday, October 30. According to Essex Fire and Rescue Service, two of the men had already climbed into the tumble dryer when a third man’s ankles became trapped in the door when he tried to crawl in. Firefighters worked with Essex Police, Helicopter Medical Emergency Service (HEMS) and the Ambulance Service’s Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) to rescue the men.

Early Protection VACCINES for children could protect against Covid-19, claims a researcher. Cross-immunity from the paediatric tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis vaccine could protect children against coronavirus, an investigation carried out by Pedro A Reche, from the Immunology Department of the Complutense University of Madrid has found. Covid-19 severely affects the elderly while children are largely protected, said the researcher. “In this study, the possible cross-immunity induced by paediatric vaccines against SARSCoV-2 has been evaluated, concluding that the vaccine for diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (DTP) may be responsible for said protection,” said Reche.

tion (as with Bankia and Caixa Bank) as this will cre­ ate stronger operations, more able to cope with a possible recession especial­ ly if unguaranteed bad loans (including mortgages) grow and they cannot be sold on to third parties. Currently the Spanish government benefits from the purchase by the Euro­ pean Central Bank of its low interest bonds, but at some stage repayment will most likely be required.

Spanish GDP rises

Passing on old butane bottles I have lived in Spain for 17 years using the normal butane gas bottles. Now we are changing to all electric. We are pensioners and soon will not be able to handle the heavy gas bottles. I have five gas bottles which I inherited when we bought our bungalow. They are empty and I want to get rid of them. You call your distributor and he will come and take away your empty bottles. I suspect however that you do not have a contract and, as you say, simply ‘inher­ ited’ the gas bottles. Empty gas bottles are openly advertised on the Internet and sold in street markets against the rules. So it seems that you can safely give them to your friends.

THE third quarter of 2020 has seen a remarkable turn­ around in terms of volume with GDP up by 16.7 per cent according to the National In­ stitute of Statistics (INE) meaning that Spanish Gross Domestic Product has fallen by 8.7 per cent as opposed to 21.5 per cent in the previous quarter. There has been a significant increase in demand for goods both nationally and equally importantly internationally which has been one of the main reasons for the increase even though the number of hours worked during the quarter has fallen slightly. Unemployment continues to rise from 15.3 per cent last quarter to 16.3 per cent this quarter, some 350,000 people

bringing the jobless total to 3.7 million and several hun­ dred thousand more are in ERTE (furlough) but receiving financial support from the government. The Spanish government wants to stand by its socialist principles so that it can in­ crease financial support for the most poverty stricken, in­ crease pensions, introduce a basic income scheme and in­ ject greater funding for the health service, but this all comes at a cost. As expected, there will be more taxes on the better off with the introduction of high­ er capital gains and business taxes and the government has the funding promised by the European Union to fall back on.

BRITISH banks are both heroes and possibly villains with re­ gards to the amount of money they have leant to businesses but also, they have reaped a pretty good reward from the UK government. The PA news agency was told, following a freedom of in­ formation request, that the government has paid at least £65 million in interest to the banks by way of support to en­ courage that the loans are made. A further freedom of infor­ mation request by the British Business Bank found that they were charged at 5.1 per cent, lower than commercial loans but still much higher than the Bank of England rate of 0.1 per cent.

70 years of diplomatic ties A NEW book was launched si­ multaneously in Madrid and Seoul to celebrate 70 years of diplomatic ties between South Korea and Spain cover­ ing the past, present and fu­ ture of bilateral relations, economic cooperation and cultural exchanges. Korea is now Spain’s third­ largest market in Asia, with bilateral trade having reached €5.3 billion in 2019 and was also the third­ biggest source of Asian tourists for Spain with more than 630,000 visiting the country. Whilst the Spanish govern­ ment looks to increase ex­ ports, the Koreans in turn see Spain as a natural stepping stone to expand their trade across South America.

Pizza Express to slice 1,300 jobs coronavirus lockdown areas had caused a severe drop in people din­ ing out. All of the 370 Pizza Express restaurants across the UK are ex­ pected to be affected by the job losses.

Currency outlook: US dollar rallies amid renewed coronavirus panic, Brexit drama rocks the pound

Euro EUR/GBP: Down from £0.91 to £0.90 EUR/USD: Unchanged at $1.17 The euro has had a rough time through October as a second wave of coronavirus cases swept through Europe, prompting countries to impose increasingly strict re­ strictions. These restrictions have already started to have a demonstrable impact on the Eurozone economy, with a contraction in this month’s PMI figures stoking fears the bloc faces a double­dip recession. With France and Germany imposing new lockdown measures through Novem­ ber, and other Eurozone countries likely to follow their lead, the economic out­ look in the bloc is looking increasingly bleak, which may drive the euro lower in the weeks to come. Pound GBP/EUR: Up from €1.09 to €1.10 GBP/USD: Up from $1.28 to $1.30 The pound has fluctuated over the past month, mostly as a result of heightened Brexit uncertainty as the UK and EU clashed over the terms of their future trade relationship. While the back and forth over a deal created considerable volatility in GBP ex­ change rates, particularly with Boris Johnson declaring at one point that trade talks were ‘over’, a prevailing sense of cautious optimism ultimately saw Ster­ ling strengthen through October. Going forward, this volatility in the pound is only likely to become more pro­

nounced, as the ongoing uncertainty sur­ rounding Brexit is set to be compounded by rising speculation that the UK will need to impose a second national lock­ down amidst an alarming surge in coron­ avirus. However, there remains considerable upside potential in the pound if UK­EU talks move in the right direction. US Dollar USD/GBP: Down from £0.77 to £0.76 USD/EUR: Unchanged at €0.85 After rocketing higher in September, the US dollar has found itself giving some ground this month amidst shifting market sentiment and concerns over the US labour market. This weakness was most prevalent through mid­October as markets were cheered by perhaps misguided optimism that a new US stimulus package would be agreed before the election. However, the US dollar ended the month on a high after markets were gripped by fresh panic over the coron­ avirus pandemic, with investors flocking back to the safe­haven currency as the prospect of new lockdowns threaten to derail the recovery in the global econo­ my. Looking ahead, we expect the ‘Green­ back’ to continue to benefit from safe­ haven flows in the coming weeks due to heightened coronavirus jitters, as well as lingering political uncertainty in the wake of the US presidential election. Healthy News Don’t hold yer breath! LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT WORKS VISIT: Mayor Muñoz with Elías Bendodo. ALTHOUGH residents of San Pe­ dro Alcantara still have to queue outside the dilapidated health centre whilst the new one re­ mains incomplete, there is brighter news for those of the other side of Marbella as €75 mil­ lion is to be invested in the Costa del Sol hospital. Mayor, Ángeles Muñoz togeth­ er with representative of the Junta de Andalucia Elías Bendodo visited the works that are being under­ taken in the Emergency and Exter­ nal Consultation areas of the hos­ pital on Saturday October 31 and confirmed the news. The resurrection of the expan­ sion for the hospital came about after the Junta settled a dispute with the original builders of the long­deserted extension building and it will also be able to offer bet­

ter parking for visitors. Bendodo said “the Andalucian president has instructed the Min­ ister of Health to start working on updating the project to expand the hospital which was left half completed by the paralysis of the previous government. “We are finding around €75 million for the completion of the work and we are going to start up­ dating the project to meet current needs,” he added. The mayor also congratulated all of the staff at the hospital for the hard and difficult work that they had undertaken since the outbreak of the pan­ demic. Things are looking up for health on the Costa del Sol, with the Es­ tepona Hospital due to open with­ in a few months and the La Linea hospital up and running already.

I HAVE always maintained that political correctness would be the death of the UK. Witnessing the facts emerging from this week’s inquest into the Manchester bombing it appears my predictions have tragically begun to materialise. According to his testimony, the security guard responsible for allowing this despicable piece of pig swill to continue his mission of death admitted he hadn’t challenged him because he ‘didn’t want to appear racist!’ This was despite the monster transparently ticking every suspicious box on the list. The colossal back pack he was carrying should alone have aroused suspicion, even if it had been carried in by the Pope himself! No, I’m afraid this witness’s admission simply shows us that all those who advocate political correctness and the suppression of free speech, basically have the blood of all those young people on their hands. To my

mind they are all traitors and are guilty of treason. If we had allowed thousands of young able bodied Germans, to enter and be succoured in the UK before the First World War, there wouldn’t have been a second! If we had also decided to subsequently implement laws of Political Correctness and the suppression of free speech it would have been akin to handing the German interlopers weapons of mass destruction and the country would have been destroyed within weeks. Someone truly does have to get a grip. Scotland Yard has admitted there are at least 5,000 Jihadists in Britain alone, with more than 30,000 operating in terrorist cells, and reinforcements are arriving every day! How much more will it take for our politicians to act ­ or even acknowledge the true menace of Islamist extremism? In the last two weeks there have been three major terrorist attacks in France. Three of the innocent victims were actually beheaded in public by individuals screaming Allahu Akbar. ‘Ah,’ bleat the so­ called moderates, ‘but the majority of Muslims are not like that.’ No and not all the Germans were Nazis. There are 25 million Muslims

living in Europe (yep!), six million in France alone. So where are all these ‘moderates’? Why they are not out packing the streets and city centres bearing signs denouncing the extremists, along with their religious leaders decrying these violent and unacceptable acts of violence in concerted efforts to bridge the enormous gulf that exists between our two societies? Well don’t hold yer breath! The advice given by the oft misquoted John Stuart Mills and reiterated by JF Kennedy comes glaringly to mind. ‘The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men should look on and do nothing.’ I’m also getting extremely peeved at being made to feel guilty for being white. DAVID WORBOYS IT was the first day of April 36 years ago. Early that Sunday morning I was driving out of Tokyo to Hakone for a lakeside view of Mount Fuji. As one does! As I emerged from the south­western suburbs, there was a report in English on the car radio that caught my attention. Canada had purchased the US state of Ari­ zona because it needed a province with a warm climate. I was amazed. It was half an hour before I realised this was April Fools’ Day, but even then I was not sure whether this had really happened. I had believed my ears and fallen for an April prank for the first time since childhood. Indeed there are many instances where our ears deceive us. I remember talking to a friend about the great American swing bands of the 30’s. “Chick Webb discovered Ella Fitzgerald,” he said. “He had a great band. Tommy Dorsey took on Frank Sinatra.” “Sinatra was with Dorsey’s band?” “Yes. He had a very good one.” “Dorsey had Benny Goodman? I can’t be­ lieve that.” As we filed out of church one morning in 1962, a fellow congregant asked me “What a sermon! But, what did he mean: ‘Christ

I really wanted light bulbs. Sometimes somebody makes a state­ ment or says something that is beyond be­ lief. I almost spluttered my porridge when I was watching the recent signing of a peace agreement between Israel, the UAE and Bahrain, when Trump congratulated his corrupt (alleged) war criminal friend, Ne­ tanyahu, by saying “He is a great leader, just like me. I’m a tremendous leader.” Maybe he was thinking aloud. I felt pretty ridiculous when I went into an electrical shop in Torre del Mar and asked for a packet of firemen. Unfortunate­ ly I asked in Spanish. The shop owner and the salesgirl looked at me as if I were Don­ ald Trump (ie a nut case). I had asked a friend at the coffee bar for the Spanish word for light bulb. She had said ‘Bombilla!’ I had heard ‘Bombero.’

In Spain we have, depending on where you live, the National Police, the Guardia Civil, the regional police and the Local Police, which makes it really difficult to know where to go to request help you may need. The National Police and the Guardia CIvil belong to what is called ‘State Security Forces and Bodies’ and their functions are to promote citizen security, preventing disorders

and crimes, as well as the prosecu­ tion of these. The functions of both bodies are similar, although not always the same, the initial difference is where they carry out their work. The National Police is part of the Ministry of the Interior and occupies an important part of the Spanish territory, with the exception of the Autonomous Communities that have an Autonomous Police, such as Cat­ alonia (called Mossos de Esquadra) or the Basque Country (Ertzaintza). Those known as ‘Municipal’ are the Local Police and are part of each City Council. However, not all municipalities have Local Police, as it is a decision made by each of the municipal gov­ ernments. The Local Police carry out their

function exclusively in the locality to which they belong and therefore their functions are limited to that area. They must work with the National Police and the Guardia Civil. So depending on where you live and what matter it is, you should call 091 (National Police), 092 (Local Po­ lice) or Guardia Civil 062, although a good alternative is to call the emer­ gency number 112 if it is an impor­ tant matter and they will refer you to the proper police. Another option is to download the application for mobile phones ‘Alert­ Cops’ which is also available in Eng­ lish, and puts you in contact with the appropriate police, and it is a useful tool for many cases in which you are a witness or victim of a possible crime.

A TRAGIC migrant family who perished crossing the Channel to the UK ‘had no choice.’ Construction worker Rasoul Iran­Nejad, 35, his wife Shiva Mohammad Panahi, 35, along with Anita, nine, and Armin, six, perished after being trapped in the cabin of a crammed makeshift fishing boat when it capsized in rough conditions, with winds of up to 47mph and five­ foot waves. A text message that appears to be from Mrs Panahi to a family member on Saturday, October 24 said the fami­ ly “had no choice” but to cross the Channel, as to go the safer route by lorry “we might need more money that we don’t have.”

NATIONAL STATE OF ALARM

Questions & Answers Why has a national curfew been put in place and how will it help? The National State of Alarm was announced on Sunday, October 25, and has been im­ plemented as a way of slow­ ing the spread of Covid­19 in Spain. The State of Alarm was approved so that a national curfew could be put in place. It also gives local governments the ability to implement re­ gional specific restrictions for their areas. Are flights still arriving to and leaving from Spain? Flights are still coming in and out of Spain, however you can only travel into re­ gions that have not closed their regional borders. Cur­ rently, at the time of print, the only areas that are still accept­ ing non­essential travel are Mallorca and Galicia. This will also be dependent on your country of origin and their travel restrictions. The Canary Islands has an ex­ tension to the BOE meaning that tourists can travel to the Canary Islands, however trav­ ellers will be required to have a negative PCR test which must be taken no more than 72 hours prior to travelling. Will I still be able to cele­ brate Christmas Day with my family? The current national restric­ tions is a max of six people, unless they are from the same household. However, regional restrictions are in place in every one of the 17 regions of Spain and the limits on group meetings vary according to the region. For example, in An­ dalucia, groups of more than

The national curfew is set at 11pm­6am where people can­ not leave their homes howev­ er the individual regions may amend the times of this cur­ few by one hour in either di­ rection.

Can I go to the bar with my friends? Yes, however bars must be closed by 10.30pm to enable all public and staff to be home and off the streets by 11pm.

I want to return home for Christmas by car or ferry, can I still go? At the moment the same rules apply as per the informa­ tion regarding travel. However, it is important to understand that the current restrictions can change locally and nationally at any time, therefore the infor­ mation available today will very likely be different by Christmas. Does each region have the ability to change restrictions when it wants even though the State of Alarm runs until May? At this time, the regional governments can alter the re­ strictions within their bound­ aries any way they wish. They can also change the limitation of groups and people in public and private spaces. The only aspect, under the National State of Alarm that they cannot change, is the nationwide cur­ few until November 9. However, it is important to stress that any and all local mea­ sures can change with minimum notice. Furthermore, the National State of Alarm is being reviewed every 15 days even though it has been approved until May 9. Therefore, decisions being taken at the national level can also change every two weeks.

NOT UP TO STANDARD I WANTED to raise the issue of the appalling treatment we received at both Huercal-Overa hospital and the Albox Medical Centre. I am sure if we were dogs with mange we would have been treated better. We have just moved to Spain and admittedly we do not speak the language. However, in the UK if a non-native speaker presented themselves, they would be appointed a translator and treated respectfully. We expected some difficulties but nothing like the blatant rudeness dished out. Surely this cannot be acceptable. Expats contribute extensively to the Spanish economy, but beyond that it is surely a basic human right to be treated with empathy and fairness... or am I expecting too much? I wouldn’t dream of treating another human being with the indifference that we experienced, yet this appears to be the acceptable face of the Spanish health system. Who, in power is going to be remembered as the person who stood up and enforced change? Someone has to. In the 21st century, with all the challenges we face, we should be unified, not treating people like the enemy. BA

IT would appear that the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic is fully gripping nations across the globe. Since the curve flattened at the end of the first wave there have been sharp rises in official figures and subsequent drops depending on the specific actions taken by governments across the globe. Some have enforced strict measures that have curtailed public freedom and others have opted for a more ‘laissez faire’ approach. Figures have been overestimated, and figures have been underestimated, with many unsure as to what to believe any more. There is one side of the debate that thinks the whole situation is a global attempt to control the population and force them into submission with their opponents arguing that we are in the grasps of a deadly global pandemic that will see winter bring more deaths than the first wave with public health services unable to cope. With UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, announcing a four-week lockdown in the UK and a range of European countries including Germany following a similar tactic, one of the questions on everyone’s lips is; Will it work? Lockdown or no-lockdown, full lockdown or local lockdown, circuit breaker lockdown or extended lockdown, no one really seems to know. To be honest, with so much conflicting information, it is really difficult to know what should be done for the best, so the real question is, “To lockdown, or not lockdown?”

Gardening Growing your own fruit and veg not only allows you to have healthy ingredients for home cooked meals, it has also been found to reduce stress and improve depression symptoms as the sights and smells of the garden promote relaxation.

You cannot force ac­ ceptance, you need to learn your own natural process and break it down. If you are feeling overwhelmed, what is the challenge that is making you feel over­ whelmed? Learn about your natural feel­ ings before attempting to take action. Sometimes, it can simply be one of those things such as a bad day. Be kind to yourself and see things how they really are without spending too much time trying to direct. It can be so easy for you to lose touch with reality. It can be a sign that you are refusing to care what is really going on. Take things less personally. Not everything in the world is about you. You are not al­ ways the victim. Ask what is it that is really bothering you and causing your negative thoughts and emotions. What is really going on?

The joys of being overly-sensitive MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED I USED to be overly sensitive about being overly sensitive. For those of you who identify with being on the more sensitive side, you probably will be nodding your head in agreement. For the rest of you, this collection of words is an insight into the world of those of us who live in this world with that overly-sensitive side of us. I have spent a great deal of my life thinking that being overly-sensitive was a bad thing. I’d try and try to change it, but you can’t hide emotion. My brain gets the logic of the situation, but my mind? Oh, my mind, it gives away how I really feel much quicker than my brain can stop it. I don’t think anyone realises how hard it can be on someone who feels deeply to be told “don’t feel so much” or “it’s not that big a deal” or “are you crying about that?” because for us, this is just the way we are made. What’s funny about when I’m told, “don’t be so sensitive” is that I actually get it. I know I’m responding that way and any of you that also are like me, well, I know you get it. The more we try to hide it the more it trickles out. We get that we are taking it personally. We try

to do it differently. But why? Why am I attempting to fix a part of my own personality? The more I realised, that there is absolutely nothing wrong with being overly-sensitive. Truth be told it is an awesome trait to have in life. For me, I am empathetic, I can see past the logic and feel the heart and oftentimes, when hope is lost, it allows me to identify a piece of good, of joy, in the normal. We get overwhelmed easily. Again, not by choice, but honestly, chaos makes our minds spin and our hearts go crazy. It doesn’t last, but it is hard in the moment. Don’t hide who you really are. So maybe I do cry if I miss the train, or if I can’t find my favourite pink top, or if I can’t remember the name of the song I’ve been singing all day. Someone has to. If you are overly-sensitive, well, that’s a fantastic thing. Here’s the truth I discovered in my own journey - the opposite of being overly sensitive was not caring. Living under the lie of “I’m fine” and “it’s no big deal” and shoving down emotions. I chose feeling. And yeah I may cry at Hallmark Christmas movies it’s worth every single tear, every smile, every “overly-sensitive” label out there. BE PROUD - BE YOU! Love Ms Bipolar X

Winter dog care THE cooler weather is arriving and pets can be vulner­ able over winter and need extra care to keep them healthy and happy. Providing your dog with an adequate diet adapted to its breed, size, age and weight is important all year round and even more so in winter to ensure it receives the right vitamins and nutrients. However, bear in mind that like humans, it’s proba­ bly less active in colder months so be careful not to overfeed. Skin and coat care is also important to protect dogs from the cold and damp. Daily brushing is vital to avoid matted hair and a conditioner should be applied beforehand to create a protective layer on the coat. One bath per month is enough and remember to dry your dog off carefully afterwards as damp dog hair can be a breeding ground for bacteria. Unless your dog has extremely long hair, keep clip­ ping to a minimum. Leave most of the coat at its nat­ ural length, but clip the hair on its stomach and legs a little shorter to avoid it picking up damp and mud when outside. Keep a pot of natural Vaseline to hand and apply it noses and pads when it’s cold. This will stop the sensi­ tive skin from drying out and cracking. Finally, especially if your dog is small or has short hair, buy it a raincoat. It may look a little silly but will be much happier as it will stay drier and warmer on rainy walks. Do remember to dry off unprotected ar­ eas afterwards though.

What stands out to me is he managed to bankrupt his casinos in Atlantic City which is a really difficult thing to do. As an aside, I actually got thrown out of the Trump Taj Mahal, but that’s a whole different story. Then there are the most ridiculous things he has said this week whilst on his campaign trail. The one that stands out for me was when he stood there and said that he has done more for black people in the USA than anyone

else. When accused of being racist he actually said, “I am the least racist per­ son here.” Really? You actually want to say that you buf­ foon? Think about what he is saying which is yes, I am racist, but not as racist as other people here! So in a room with KKK members and a few of the Proud Boys, Donald, let me tell you, you’re only the least racist per­ son in the room if it’s 1942 Germany and you’re at a cocktail party hosted by the Third Reich and even then I’m not entirely convinced. Then last night, just to piss off all the women, he says, “I'm getting all your husbands back to work.” What century is this man in? Get them back to work so the little woman can go back to doing all her household chores without hubby getting in her way? It goes on and on. Covid will be gone by November 4 ac­ cording to him. Well that’s great news or is it just more of his absolute bull­ shit?
