THE Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre in Rojales has gone international. After months of hard work, Easy Horse Care Rescue Switzerland is now an official ly registered and recognised charity. This means that fundrais ing can be carried out there and horses rehomed. The news comes at a time when the Rescue Centre needs more support and funds than ever, with over 120 horses, ponies and don keys in their care. Cofounder Sue Weeding could not contain her excite ment at what the future

could hold for the animals she, and her husband Rod, care so passionately for. “Easy Horse Care Rescue Switzerland will enable us to rehome many horses from Spain to a good place,” she said. Sue believes it is an ideal country for her rescued hors es to enjoy a new life, as Switzerland is financially se cure, has grass, clean air and very good animal welfare laws. “We feel incredibly lucky and honoured to be given this opportunity,” she said.

Franco blackballed TORREVIEJA’S Real Club Nautico finally removed a plaque naming Fran cisco Franco as its president in perpetuity. Following approval of Spain’s Historical Memory law in 2007, ban ning vestiges of Franco’s 19391975 regime, several members had re quested the plaque’s removal. The board of directors routinely replied that the Real Club Nautico was a private entity and the plaque was not on public view. It belonged to a part of the club’s past that could not be erased, they explained. However, the plaque has now disappeared and been replaced with another listing its current president and board.

A brand new life Rojales’ horse Lawrence is already on his way to a new life in Switzerland. His story inspired Jas min Imfeld from Switzer land who fell in love with what Sue and Rod were doing when she spent a working holiday at the Rojales Centre. She helped to set up the association in her home country and is now Easy Horse Care Rescue Switzerland’s president. “I just feel we shall be able to do so much more to help horses and give them a good life,” Sue said. Home checks will be carried out in Switzer land and the association reserves the right to take back an animal they feel is not cared for correctly.

Something to celebrate THIRTEEN Elche couples celebrated their Golden Wed ding anniversary this year. They received an informal homage during the city’s Third Age Month, organised by the local government’s Senior Citizens Policies department headed by Puri Vives. City hall streamed the tribute live, enabling the cou ples themselves and their families to watch it in real time. Elche mayor Carlos Gonzalez recognised that this year’s circumstances meant that this had to be a rather different celebration. “Although we cannot be together we wanted to ex press our fondness towards each of these 13 couples who have been together for 50 years,” he said.

NIBS EXTRA Merit medal SANTA POLA Town Hall awarded Capt Francisco Javier Lopez Sacido, commander-in-chief of the local Guardia Civil, the Order of Police Merit. He was put forward for the medal by Jose Miguel Zaragoza, Santa Pola’s Local Police commissioner, in recognition of Capt Lopez Sacido’s outstanding and effective work in the municipality.

Taking turns ORIHUELA Town Hall announced that owing to social distancing requirements, stallholders at the municipality’s open-air markets will operate on alternate weeks. Traders whose licences ended in an odd number set up their stalls on Saturday October 24 while those with even numbers would do so the following week.

Gun law THE SPPLB police union complained that temporary Local Police officers, who may not carry firearms, are going out on patrol with established officers in Rojales. This infringed regulations, as all officers on public safety operations should be armed.

EMERGENCY MEETING: Elche’s mayor, councillors and police chief discuss latest anti-Covid measures. ELCHE police will be out in force, ensuring that residents respect regionwide rules that now in clude a curfew. Following an emergency meet ing with Local Police chiefs, city mayor Carlos Gonzalez described the new Covidfighting measures as “adequate and necessary” to halt the spread of the virus. Latest figures confirmed that Elche had a Covid infection rate of 230 cases for every 100,000 in habitants, although the mayor

stressed that the situation in Elche General and Vinalopo hospital was not worrying. Between both there were 51 patients on the wards and 10 in intensive care, he revealed. With increased patrols and 60 officers on duty at any one time, Gonzalez called on the Local Po lice to devote their energies to guaranteeing that the public com plied with regulations. He also asked for “maximum individual responsibility and maxi

mum compliance with restric tions” from the local population. “We need to be fully aware that two out of every three conta gions are of social and family ori gin,” the mayor warned. “For that reason, measures fo cus on avoiding gatherings of more than six people and pre venting leisure activities from transmitting the virus,” Gonzalez said, announcing that the munici pality’s Halloween activities had been suspended.

Refusal to go with the flow BENIDORM’S mayor Toni Perez came out strongly in support of the TajoSegura aqueduct. Bringing vital water for agricultural growers in the Vega Baja and other areas in southern Alicante Province, this does not directly affect Benidorm but Perez recently attended a Zoom meeting of the Provincial Water Commission to which he be longs. The Commission unanimously backed a techni cal report from SCRATS, the syndicate of growers who depend on water transfers to the area. The report maintained that increasing the Tajo’s ecological flow the amount of water needed to sustain aquatic life and a river’s ecosystem could gravely affect the transfer.

It would reduce transfers by 20 per cent from an annual average of 340 cubic hectometres to 271 cubic hectometres. Carlos Mazon, president of Alicante’s provincial council, the Diputacion, thanked all attending the Zoom meeting for their unity in tackling the prob lem. He revealed that he intends, as Diputacion pres ident, to request a meeting with Teresa Ribera, the central government’s Environment minister, putting forward Alicante Province’s position and the findings of the SCRATS report. This, he will explain to Ribera, would be the ba sis of a formal appeal against increasing the Tajo’s ecological flow.

It wants to see an audit of La Ribera hospital in Alzira (Valencia), which was originally outsourced to the private sector but returned to the public health system two years ago. The PPCV’s Health spokesman Jose Juan Zaplana suggested that an audit would be able to bring to light management failures that should be avoided if the Torrevieja deprivatisation scheme is carried out.

THE Spanish government implemented a nationwide State of Alarm on Sunday, October 25. The State of Alarm means that the pub lic must abide by: A mandatory nationwide curfew for the entire coun try is now in effect from 11pm until 6am daily. The autonomous regions of Spain are able to amend the time of the curfew by one hour at their discretion, but the rules will remain in place for a 15day period, after which it will be re viewed from November 9. The initial period will last for 15 days with parliament having to ratify any exten sions or amendments mov ing forward. The extraordinary meet ing of the government

council of ministers was held on Sunday, October 25 at midday and approved the required decree to im plement the new State of Alarm. Until the government is content that the rate of in fection has dropped to ac ceptable levels, they have stated that they will contin ue to seek extensions to this process until the spread is confined. At this stage, the govern ment has made no indica tion that it intends to im plement a further national lockdown, however, in his speech on Friday October 23, Sanchez would not go as far as to rule it out en tirely. Done deal ORIHUELA Town Hall has sold the Palacio de Justicia court complex in Plaza de Santa Lucia to the Generalitat. The regional government will pay €4.767 million, less €150,000 which it paid to rent the building in 2018 and 2019, following a 2017 deal with the local government. The Generalitat will split payment over the next four years, explained Orihuela mayor Emilio Bascuñana. In 2017 the regional government ceded Orihuela’s former courthouse to the town hall for municipal use. At the same time it undertook to rent the new Palacio de Justicia over the next 10 years with the option to buy, which it has now taken up. The town hall also agreed to provide land to extend the Santa Lucia complex. With the deal signed and sealed, Bascuñana emphasised the “good disposition and institutional harmony” between both parties. “It is important to continue collaborating with the Generali tat to solve Orihuela and the Vega Baja’s other needs that have held us back since last year’s storms,” the mayor de clared. Gabriela Bravo, who heads the Generalitat’s Justice depart ment, also expressed satisfaction now that her department was working with the town hall to locate municipal land for a Palacio de Justicia extension.

Los Vidales canal nearly ready SAN FULGENCIO’S mayor Jose Samper recently visited the Los Vidales irriga tion channel, where the Generalitat is carrying out €1.9 million repairs. Samper was accompanied by Do lores mayor Joaquin Hernandez and Agriculture councillor Francisco Manuel Moler, as both towns were

affected when the channel over flowed during the September 2019 storms. “This new canal, where work is al most finished, will help to drain off accumulated rainwater, bringing more safety to the town and min imising risks,” Samper said.

Gwilym Owen, who was not wearing a mask, was seen remov ing plastic covers from items which shops are no longer allowed to sell under the new Welsh lockdown restrictions. The man was heard to shout “since when have clothes been exempt?” and “rip the f***ers off!” as he tore the plastic sheet ing from racks of clothing. Wales was plunged into a ‘firebreak’ lockdown at 6pm on Friday, October 23. During this period, which will last 17 days, people will be asked to stay at home and to leave only for a limited number of reasons, including exercise, buying essential supplies, or to seek or provide care.

Arson Attempt GERMANY’S ‘Robert Koch Institute for Infectious Dis eases’ was attacked as part of an arson attempt on the facility overnight on Satur day, October 24. According to a report from the Berlin police, the building, which advises the German government on public health measures to stem the coronavirus pan demic, was attacked by several assailants causing damage to one of the win dows before security guards arrived on the scene. The guards wit nessed the attackers throw bottlebased incendiary de vices at the building, which caused mild damage. Thankfully, noone was hurt.

TWO children were found alive in their home after their parents died in bed. Local Police in Murcia recovered the four gokarts close to the Nueva Condomina shopping centre from where they had been taken. Witnesses reported seeing young people driving dangerously in the streets around the centre. When the police arrived at the scene at almost 1am on Thurs day, October 22, the ‘racers’ had fled and two of the karts had been abandoned in the centre car park. The other two gokarts were later found on an industrial estate close by after further reports of reckless driving from residents. As yet, police have not identified any suspects.

Melissa Nosti, from North Ryde, northern Sydney, pleaded gulty to having sex with the pupil at a school she was working as an attendance officer at in 2010. She was sentenced to 18 months in prison with a six

Operations Stopped NOTTINGHAM University Hospitals NHS Trust has been forced to postpone nonurgent surgery after becoming filled to capacity with Covid19 patients. Appointments have also been postponed until November 6, after the city’s Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC) saw a ‘dramatic increase in the number of patients with Covid19.’ Tracy Taylor, the Trust’s chief executive said: “This surge is now at a level similar to April and is combining with our normal winter emergency pressures.’ On postponing appoint ments and surgery I am so sorry that we have had to make this de cision, but it is necessary to ensure we can continue to keep every one in the hospital safe while we deal with this virus.”

Invasive touch SERIOUS concerns have been raised by Australia after 13 Australian women were reportedly subjected to invasive internal exams in Qatar. The incident happened as the women tried to board a flight from Do ha to Sydney on October 2, where according to a Channel Seven report, they were taken to an ambulance on the tarmac and ordered to re move their underwear before being examined. The women were not told the reason behind the examinations, how ever, they reportedly happened after staff at the Hamad International Airport discovered a prematurely born baby, not known whether to be alive or deceased, in a bathroom.

LEISURE centres are to receive £100 million to keep Britons fighting fit. But while Swim England has welcomed the investment in public leisure centres “as a good start,” it fears it will only cover the “tip of the iceberg.” The cash is part of £1 billion worth of funding for councils in need announced by the Prime Minister earlier this month. Massive Birds of Prey Cake THE world’s largest Zuger Kirschtorte cake has been baked by a team of 10 bakers in the Swiss town of Zug. Weighing a hefty 531 pounds (almost 241 kilos), the cake also known as a Swiss cherry cake was created by bak ers from the Confiserie Speck bakery who spent 55 hours working on the dessert. The cherry liqueurfilled cake mea sured about 13 feet in diameter and was cut into around 3,300 pieces which were given to local residents once it had been officially measured.

A STUDY by the Raptor Protocol (Recording and Addressing Persecution and Threats to Our Raptors), published on Wednesday, October 21, spans 12 years and shows the vast majority of Ireland’s birds of prey have been killed by human attacks or other activity including poisoning. Just over 300 of the birds were found to have been poisoned or suffered some form of unnatural death between 2007 and 2019. The study involved collecting carcasses and injured birds, carrying out X-rays, post-mortems, DNA sampling, toxicology, follow-up investigations and data analysis. In the 12-year period, a total of 338 incidents were recorded, including 214 poisonings which accounts for 71.5 per cent of incidents.

‘Miracle man’ A ‘MIRACLE man’ who battled for 214 days in hospital after being diagnosed with Covid-19 has finally gone home. Richard Misior, 81, spent 214 days in Gold Coast University Hospital, Queensland, Australia, after contracting coronavirus on the Ruby Princess cruise ship in March. THE Guardia Civil have arrested an alleged jihadist radical and ter rorist in Altea, Alicante. Officers of the Information Service of the Guardia Civil, support ed by EUROPOL detained the suspect on Wednesday, October 20 in the Alicante municipality of Altea. The Moroccan citizen, 50, was arrested for alleged terrorist activities as a radical supporter of the Daesh terrorist group. Officials report that he centred his activities around searching, editing, commenting on and disseminating Daesh propaganda material. The extremist then identified possible targets on social media, mostly young people, and attempted to recruit and radi calise them.

A LORRY driver who overturned his vehicle was six times over the legal alcohol limit. The accident oc curred on the N334 Almeria to Valencia road within the munici pality of Yecla. Guardia Civil were called to the scene when it was re ported that a lorry had overturned on the car riageway. The driver of the ve hicle is reported to be a 41yearold Spanish national from Sante Fe in Granada. Emergency personnel at the scene quickly established that the man was un der the influence, and a subsequent breath test revealed that he was six times over the legal alcohol limit for professional drivers.

AN almost total ban on abortion could be introduced in Poland as a top constitutional court is set to make a ruling. Poland already has some of the strictest laws in Europe with abortion only being allowed in cases of rape or incest, if the foetus is seriously compromised, or if the mother's life is at risk. The news has angered human rights groups who are urging the Polish government to reject the plans, which under the new legislation would also ban terminations in cases of foetal defects. This appears to be the main issue of contention for those advocating against the move as nearly all abortions carried out in Poland are where the foetus has severe disabilities.

Cash Crisis A SURVEY of more than 7,000 people, conducted by the FCA during the coronavirus pandemic, found 12 million people in the UK had low financial resilience, meaning they may strug gle with bills or loan repayments. The data shows two million of those who are not financial ly resilient have become so since February 2020. Due to the impact of the pandemic, many of those who have experienced changes in employment and increased stress are now likely to have low financial resilience, said FCA. These consumers are more likely to fall behind on pay ments with those from a Black and Minority Ethnic back ground were more likely to be affected, with 37 per cent of adults taking an income hit.

Animal abuse ANIMAL abuse fines have tripled in Spain’s Valencia region. Hailed ‘the most ad vanced animal rights laws’ in all of Spain, the Valencian Community Courts approved new measures to protect the nation’s animals last week. The new law will see fines for animal abuse of up to €45,000, three times as much as they were before. Valencian Communi ty councillor for Rural Development, Mireia Mollà, told reporters the new law recognises animals as ‘sentient be ings’ deserving of ‘digni ty.’ The fine structure works from ‘mild’ (€3,000), to ‘serious’ (€9,000) to ‘very serious’ (€45,000).

AN explosive theft occurred in the seaside Merseyside town of Southport as robbers stole cash from an ATM, in a crime police have dubbed ‘extremely reck less.’ Merseyside Police and fire fighters were called to the scene in Chapel Street after an alarm was triggered at a WHSmith at

Space Hub NATO experts are building a ‘space’ hub among threats from Chinese and Russian weapons. Spiderman Activist AN activist in his 60s, dressed in a Spiderman costume, scaled Big Ben scaffolding to display several banners. Just before 8am on Thursday morning, October 22, a man appearing to be in his 60s climbed the scaffolding onto Big Ben where he displayed multiple banners carrying messages to the government.

A WOMAN has been fined £230 for having ‘al fresco’ sex with a stranger. Kate Jackson, 40, and Jonathan Pisani, 44, were seen having sex on a pave ment in Stalybridge town cen tre, Greater Manchester, at 3.43pm on August 10. A concerned passerby phoned the police as she thought Jackson was being raped, but later examination of CCTV footage showed the couple kissing and cuddling. The pair were arrested at the scene and charged with outraging public decency. In addition to a £50 fine,

Accidental Release A WANTED Italian mafia boss, who was being tracked by Spanish police for over two years, was accidentally released by a Spanish court having already been arrested. Vittorio Raso, who is believed to be one of the leaders of the ‘Ndrangheta crime syndicate from the Italian region of Calabria, couldn’t believe his luck when he was released after giving his statements on extortion charges via video link to a judge at Spain’s High Court, the Audiencia Nacional. The mix-up happened when two hours after the 41year-old’s release from his holding cell inside the City of Justice in Barcelona, information was passed on that he was indeed wanted for being an Italian mafia boss. The extraordinary decision to release the prisoner came despite the court receiving an extensive police report explaining who Raso was, which also included a copy of a European Arrest Warrant issued by Italian police. A new warrant for his arrest has been issued by the judge of the case as Raso remains at large.

Spanish economy a roller coaster ride

Pedro Sánchez supported Barcelona New Economy Week with the King. A REPORT by Spanish bank BBVA suggests that the Spanish economy is likely to be something of a roller coaster ride, but the long term prognosis is better than might have been ex pected with 2020 seeing an overall contraction of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 11.5 per cent followed by growth of up to 6 per cent in 2021. The first six months of the year had a dramatic effect on production and sales due to the lockdown, but the third quarter has surprised analysts as it likely, when fi nally reported, to show a definite turn for the better due to growth in demand not just nationally but for exports as well. Much will depend on the fourth quarter and the steps that national and regional governments will take in or der to combat the rise in positive infections with Covid19 and exports could

also be harmed as other countries may move back in to sporadic lockdown. There is of course the Spanish Recovery Plan to be considered which will utilise the significant injection of European Union funds into the economy of which ap proximately 50 per cent is a grant and the balance is a longterm loan with reason able rates of interest. The lack of international tourism has caused signifi cant problems both from an employment perspective where hotels either re mained closed or simply shut at the end of Septem ber and this had a threefold effect as tax revenue was lost, staff were placed in ERTE with the government paying for them and third party suppliers lost their usual business. Flesh-eating Not all doom and gloom

A DEADLY flesheating bacteria is invading the US thanks to climate change. Cases of toxic flesheating bacteria vibrio have doubled since 2007, according to the Centre for Disease Control (CDC). This is largely due to climate change and powerful hurricanes. Accord ing to the CDC, the warming of the Earth is causing sea levels to rise and storms, such as hurricanes, to intensify. Both are resulting in the natural spreading of the coastal water and the bacteria living within it. Additional ly, vibrio is believed to be more dangerous in warmer temperatures.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT AT the risk of dripping on like an old tap, I truly do find it difficult to believe that the Covid19 ‘flat earth’ deniers are still harping on about ‘conspiracies’ and falsified numbers. In all fairness, they do seem to have shifted their stance slightly and albeit reluctantly, now concede that there actually is a problem. However, never being able to admit they are totally in the wrong, they still maintain the number of cases to be grossly exaggerated. Well, just last weekend I witnessed a young lady from South Yorkshire in tears being interviewed on TV. She was a hospital cleaner. This plainly distressed young lady, was begging the more cynical members of the public to please take the virus more seriously. Why? Because the hospital cleaners were being traumatised by the ever increasing numbers of body bags

they had to clean for reuse! Last Saturday the whole of South Yorkshire went on to Tier 3. This was after the local authorities had themselves pleaded with the government to raise the level in an effort to contain their huge rise in infections and deaths. Last Sunday there were 3,000 new cases and 174 deaths, in that area alone. Exaggerated or not, this could still reach around 1,200 deaths a week! I would also like to reiterate to my social media trolls and dissenters, I am not paranoid. I am not a scaremonger and I am not fearful of becoming a victim. In fact, I’m pretty sure, with all my symptoms; I actually had the virus as far back as February. I’m writing this because I care about other people and consider the sceptics to be misled, naïve and downright dangerous. For all our sakes toe the line, follow the rules, stop blaming the authorities and do all you can to reduce the number of body bags that need to be cleaned for reuse! Having said all that, I do also believe that in general the virus is on the decline. (Yaaay). So many have caught it and

recovered, it stands to reason that the disease is unable to spread among communities as easily as it did at the outset. The numbers of reinfections reported are also so small to be almost negligible. Personally I think we will now only see large outbreaks confined to specific areas. Those parts of the country that have already been hit heavily, will find their number of cases gradually begin to decline. The important thing is to keep numbers as low as possible so the medical facilities can cope. If this means following the directives of the experts just a little longer, then so be it. I think that come the spring the whole nightmare will be all but over and we will be able to look forward to a New Year slowly returning to relative normality; hopefully without having obscene ‘no jab no job’ experimental vaccines foisted upon us! Bargain bidding AN Italian town is selling off abandoned homes for €1 in an attempt to reverse a trend of depopulation. Over the next few weeks, dozens of dilapidated properties will go under the hammer in Salemi in Sicily, with prices start ing at €1. Town mayor, Domenico Venuti, told CNN Travel he wants to breathe new life into Salemi, which saw its popula tion drop considerably when at least 4,000 residents left after an earthquake that shook Sicily’s Belice Valley in 1968. He said all the buildings belong to the city council, which al lows for a speedy sale with less red tape. Venuti pointed out that prior to launching the scheme, the council first had to recover old parts of Salemi where the houses are located. This meant upgrading infrastructure and services, including roads, sewage pipes and electric grids.

12-Minute Covid Test UK high street pharmacy Boots is set to launch a 12 minute Covid nasal swap test and will be available in over 50 of its stores. The £120 test will be avail able for people who are not showing any symptoms after the 12minute Covid nasal swab was approved by au thorities in Europe and the US, along with the device needed to process the test. Should I apply for TIE before 31 December 2020? IF you have either the green credit card or the A4 Certificado de Registro (Registration Certificate) you don’t have to obtain the new biometric tarjeta de identidad de extranjero (TIE) card to prove your residency and rights to live in Spain after 31 December 2020. Proceeds will go to Easy Horse Care Charity in Rojales, which was founded in 2008 by British expats Sue and Rod Weeding. The non-profit rescue centre saves neglected, abused and abandoned horses, ponies and donkeys across Spain’s Costa Blanca region.

HUNT IS ON: Halloween fun for the family.

WITCHES from dark and remote places are expected to descend on Habaneras shopping centre in Torrevieja this Halloween to gift trinkets and prizes. And one of the biggest attractions is sure to be the ‘hunt the pumpkin’ competition. Shoppers and their families are invited to find pumpkins distributed throughout the centre. Each one will contain a QR code that can be scanned on the Habaneras App, using the button called ‘yincana.’ Each QR contains one of the syllables that make the word CA.LA.BA.ZA. Once the young ‘hunter’ has all the syllables, they can go to

the stand next to the InfoBox and request a super prize. They will be given a cool customised Halloween-themed children’s mask and a cauldron with which to make a deal with the witches to fill it with sweets. What will it be: trick or treat?
