IN the past week, the Marbella Council has committed to spend €170,000 to help a number of charities in the municipality to continue with their good work and this is just a fraction of the money spent each year to sup port local and national charities and NGOs. It announced that it is to con tinue funding three charities based in San Pedro Alcantara to the tune of €110,000 during the 2020 financial year bringing the total paid to charities in the city to more than €1 million this year. This was confirmed by Marbel la Mayor, Ángeles Muñoz as she signed three collaboration agree ments in the Office of the Mayor of San Pedro and said how pleased she was to be continuing to support these three worthy causes. The Fundatul Tutelar Founda tion will receive €86,000 per year to continue its work to promote employment and the training of people with disabilities, the Asso ciation of Rehabilitated Alcoholics will receive €14,000 and the Prin cipito Association which helps
families with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) will be granted €10,000 per an num. Shortly afterwards it was con firmed that several grants worth more than €60,000 to guarantee the maintenance of the work car ried out in the city by Marbella Volunteer, Crece and Fibromyal gia Marbella (AFIMAR). Mayor Muñoz, signed a num ber of collaboration agreements with these three entities and she explained that for the future, the Council plans to allocate more than €2 million per year to the work carried out by different charitable associations. She stressed the fact that al though income for the Council has shrunk due to the coron avirus pandemic, the city is going to make a budgetary effort, to find the funds to keep supporting these important organisations. Support is desperately needed by these different charities as their ability to raise funds was completely curtailed during the lockdown and even now it is costing them more than ever to

maintain their facilities due to the new hygiene arrangements hav ing to be introduced due to the pandemic. There is such a diverse range of needs in the municipality that the call for funds will always be enormous. This does not take into ac count the money spent via Social Services in order to help those in danger of social exclusion due to lack of work and the need to feed their families. No council can help every body, but the relationship be tween Marbella and the various local volunteer organisations as well as larger national groups such as the Red Cross and Caritas is important and should not be undervalued.

POLITICAL INTRIGUE, SEX AND Improved water supply VIOLENCE IN TENTH CENTURY CORDOBA NOT a scandal from today’s sensational press but a story that can be read from a 10th century ivory casket or pyxis. Some times a single object can tell a very com plex story about the times in which it was created. And this is the case with the alMughira pyxis, from the ivory work shops of Cordoba, and now held in the Louvre. The Cordoba ivory workshops were renowned for the exquisite beauty of the objects they created. Understanding the iconography carved on the caskets is a fascinating study in itself. But this partic ular casket can be reinterpreted to ex pose a complex story of violence and in trigue from the court of the Cordoba
Caliphate a story that almost beggars belief. The story will be unravelled by speaker Ian Cockburn at a lecture for The Arts So ciety in Benahavis at 7pm on Tuesday Oc tober 29. Ian is an art historian with an MA from the prestigious Courtald Insti tute. He specialises in the 800 years of Moorish occupation of Spain and in the Reconquest. He is also the founder of an arts tours company in Spain and in Lon don lectures at the V and A and Christies. Due to Covid 19 restrictions the lecture will be delivered by Zoom. Party Bust in Malaga LOCAL POLICE in Malaga broke up a party on Sunday afternoon (October 18) where they found around 150 people jiving away to a DJ! The venue, located in Malaga, was not a licensed music premises and was only allowed to serve food. Six patrol cars to gether with a police canine unit attended the ‘bust’ and were surprised to see so
many people without a mask and not ob serving any social distancing whatsoever. The ‘revellers’ all had their details tak en by police along with the owner of the venue. A full report has been made and sent to the department of prosecutors in Malaga to decide what fines and penal ties will be applied which are bound to be in the thousands of euros.
WORK is now starting on an additional water tank in Mijas Pueblo which will cost €1.3 million and should be completed within the next five months, which should guarantee an abundance of water and greater pressure for those living in the area. Whilst the Mijas Council is responsible for the funding of the construction, it is working closely with water company Acosol to ensure that the new water catchment area of around 10,000 square metres is produced to specification and on time. The Council has found the money to pay for this from a grant of €7 million made by the Junta de Andalucia in January 2019 to specifically improve water supply in the municipality and this funding is available to draw down until the end of 2021.

Climbing a mountain ON November 22, Michael Moorcroft from Competa will walk up Mount Maro ma in memory of his moth er to raise funds for the Cudeca Hospice in Benal madena to help them to continue their special kind of caring. Fran Moorcroft was a vol unteer for Cudeca a few years ago and sadly died of cancer herself last year, so her son, Michael, wants to walk up the 2,000 metre Mount Maroma (which will take at least five hours up and three hours down), the nearest mountain to the vil lage in memory of his Mum. He is also trying to get
some supporters to walk with him and one, Cindy Jones, another Competa resident plans to drive as far up as she can on her quad bike and then walk the last bit taking her Cude ca banner to the top. If you would like to join Michael Moorcroft and help him to the summit, they will be meeting at the Tourist Office in Competa at 9am. Then, they will dri ve over to Fogarate, their starting point. Stunning murals Cash for Cancer FOLLOWING in the footsteps of Estepona which likes to describe itself as an openair art gallery due to the number of exquisite mu rals on walls across the town, the much smaller village of Villanue va del Trabuco also in Malaga Province appears to be of similar mind. As well as encouraging teams of schoolchildren to paint wellexe cuted floral designs on walls, it has now benefited from the intro duction of two exceptional murals, one depicting an elderly man in the Plaza de la Libertad. This was the winner of the town’s first art contest which took place last year, organised by Independent Music Platform El Indi and the council. A second equally attractive image highlighting the importance of olives to the town’s history now appears on the other side of the same building.
Unusually good weather THE fair in San Pedro de Alcantara is recognised as the last major fair of the summer on the Costa del Sol and over the last few years it has coincided with exceptionally wet weather which has seen stall holders having their rents refunded and the police having to close the fair down due to the mud and potential danger. Ironically, this year it has been cancelled due to the Covid19 pan demic, yet the weather has been exceptionally mild with no rain and plenty of sunshine and the festival of San Pedro Alcantara saw yet another holiday for those living and working in the town.
THE CLC World Founda tion based in Mijas has once again made a dona tion to the Spanish Asso ciation Against Cancer of MijasFuengirola (AECC) in recognition of World Breast Cancer Day which took place on October 19. The presentation of this cheque for €3,000 symbolises the constant support of the organisa tion from Mijas to Presentation of the cheque, women who suffer from this disease and reminds them that they are not alone as there are thousands of people by their side. Whilst accepting the cheque, representatives of the AECC said, “This amount will be used to cover the daytoday needs of the group in terms of psychological, social and therapeutic support. Likewise, due to the health crisis situation we are suffering, many patients request direct financial aid to cover basic treatment needs.” More than 100 users come every week to the headquarters of this association to receive assistance either in person or through the workshops and online activities organised by the group.

Breast Cancer awareness TORREMOLINOS Council is supporting the fight against breast cancer by installing a pink glass con tainer in La Carihuela in order to promote WHO World Breast Cancer Month (October) and will turn recycling into donations for the cause. The initiative ‘Recycle glass for them’ which is promoted by Ecovidrio and the Sandra Ibarra Foun dation, aims to raise awareness of the dangers of Breast Cancer and the importance of research and prevention in the face of a disease that affects one in eight women throughout their lives.
Antonio Ruiz, councillor for the Environment, said that “last year more than 200 kilos of glass were collected. An important figure, which with everyone’s collaboration could be converted into donations and aid for the cause.” The pink igloos are meant to remind women to have regular checkups as early detection can save lives and a miniversion is available to purchase through the website www.miniglu.es with the prof its going to the Sandra Ibarra Foundation to con tribute to cancer prevention and research.

Anti-Lockdown Dissent THOUSANDS of anti-mask protesters descended on London on Saturday October 17 calling for an end to the lockdown just hours after the capital entered Tier 2 restrictions. The group marched through Hyde Park and Oxford Street demanding an end to lockdown. Many held up placards reading ‘Covid-19 equals control’ and ‘lockdown kills’ while shunning protective face masks.
Protesters were closely followed by police officers as they made their way through central London. J eremy C orbyn’s brother Piers, who was previously fined £10,000 for organising a rally, was also in attendance. H e could be seen shouting into a megaphone with his fist raised in the air. The group wants an end to face masks and also want to stop any coronavirus vaccines.

Thailand Protests PROTESTORS: Hit the streets of London.
CHEMICAL filled water cannons were used on thousands of protestors who took to the streets in Bangkok, Thailand, on Friday, October 16, in a united call for the release of a number of activists who were recently arrested for ‘violence against the Queen.’ The protests are part of ongoing youth-led anti-monarchy sentiment which is continuing to boil over in the country. Despite the Prime Minister, Prayut Chn-O-Chan, having implemented a national state of emergency, protesters defied the government order and held a second subsequent night of protests. Several hundred riot police confronted the 2,000 strong group of protestors, firing water cannons filled with chemicals at the crowd in efforts to disperse them from the city’s main shopping district.

BORIS JOHNSON is set to clash with five Anglican Church leaders over Brexit. The Archbishops have criti cised the Internal Market Bill, saying that it would set a “dis astrous precedent” by under mining the Good Friday Agree ment and potentially putting peace in Northern Ireland at risk. The five archbishops state that the legislation “currently asks the country’s highest law making body to equip a gov ernment minister to break in ternational law,” adding, “This has enormous moral, as well as political and legal, conse quences. We believe this would create a disastrous precedent. It is particularly dis turbing for all of us who feel a sense of duty and responsibili ty to the Good Friday Agree ment.” The EU agrees, saying that by overriding the previous deal, Mr Johnson is threaten ing the Good Friday Agree ment.
A MUSLIM man has been refused German citizenship after he re fused to shake a female official’s hand. The 40yearold Lebanese doc tor received the maximum score in the test for applicants of citizen ship, but was denied at the final stage of the process after he failed to shake the hand of the woman responsible for processing the documents. The Muslim doctor from Lebanon said he refuses to shake
women’s hands on religious grounds. He applied for the coun try’s citizenship through naturali sation in 2012, thus agreeing to sign a declaration of loyalty to the German constitution and de nouncing extremism. The Lebanese, who has been working in Germany since 2002 went to court to fight the deci sion, but the Administrative Court of BadenWürttemberg ruled that a handshake represents the legal conclusion of a contract.
THE body of a man was pulled from the sea in the Malaga town of Torremoli nos on the Costa del Sol, on Saturday, October 10. Emergency services were called to El Bajondillo beach where they found the body of the victim floating about 50 metres from the shore. Members of the Guardia Civil, Maritime Rescue, Na

A TERRIFIED mum leapt from the window of her flat to escape her abusive partner in Birmingham, UK. The victim fractured her back after she jumped from a firstfloor window to escape the vicious attack from her homeless boyfriend, Karl Kali, 37. Kali has been jailed for threeandahalf years after he admitted a charge of inflicting grievous bodily harm. Birmingham Crown Court heard that Kali turned up drunk at his girlfriend’s flat in Solihull in the early hours of April 9. Even after the victim plunged from the firstfloor bedroom window, fracturing her vertebrae, Kali dragged her back inside and continued the abuse. Prosecutors told the court that Kali became angry when he feared his girlfriend had reported him to the police for breaking lockdown.

A MOTHER who went miss ing in Zion National Park, Utah in the US, 12 days ago has been found. California mother Holly Suzanne Courtier, 38, dis appeared while visiting the Utah park on October 6. According to Courtier’s

Ms Courtier vanished while touring the park after failing to turn up at a meet ing point at the end of the day. Officials located her in the park 12 days later after another visitor reported seeing her.

THE survival rate of intensive care patients is improving, new data shows. A new report from the Intensive Care Na tional Audit and Research Centre (ICNARC), which looks at patients admitted to the ICU in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, show that coronavirus patients have a better survival rate now than when the pandemic first began. The report shows that the number of pa

Religious Vandals A VANDAL has been caught on camera trying to tear a cross off the roof of an East London church. Videos released online sparked outrage as footage showed the moment the man succeeds in ripping the cross from the roof of the Chadwell Heath Baptist Church in Romford. The Metropolitan Police reported that it was called to the church on High Road at 2.40pm on Sunday. The man was arrested at the scene on
suspicion of criminal damage. A spokesman for the force said the cross was recovered and the man remains in police custody.

Unreachable Goal NINETEEN students in Valladolid face fines for forming a human tower in Plaza de Santa Cruz. They had intended to reach the bell on the facade of the Santa Cruz palace that is located there and also houses the officers of the Vice Chancellor of the Valladolid University. Whether or not they would have reached it is unknown, as the Local Police caught the group redhanded at 2am as they formed one of the human towers that are more frequent in the Valencian Community and Catalonia than CastillaLeon. All were fined for failing to wear face masks and respect social dis tancing regulations, while two more face an additional charge of failure to obey authority after they ignored the officers’ orders to stop.
THE National Police intercepted a massive orgy in Madrid organ ised by porn producer Ignacio Al lende Fernandez and two oth ers. The orgy took place in Madrid, a coronavirus hotspot, at a property on Calle San Ro mualdo in San BlasCanillejas. The police had raided the property as they found flyers de scribing the event, stating there would be no less than 50 people and all of it would be recorded. In spite of the amount of peo ple inside, around 50, there were still people waiting outside to join the frenzy. The three peo ple involved in setting up the event will be faced with ignoring Covid19 laws, and not having legal documents.

The lifesize Godzilla attraction is 75ft (23m), where visitors ride a zipline and plunge straight into the mouth of Godzilla. The pure size of the creature is what fascinates peo ple. KURT looks and acts like any other young horse, however, Kurt is no ordinary horse. He is a clone. Stalked “THIS is when I die!” was a hiker’s fear when he was stalked by a puma for six terrifying minutes. Kyle Burgess will never forget his outing in Slate Canyon, Utah, after a frightening encounter with a protective puma at the weekend. In the middle of his route, he ran into four puma cubs, a beautiful experi ence until the mother of the cubs appeared and chased him for six minutes during which the runner ‘feared for his life.’ The protective mother of the cubs literally stalked Kyle, who recorded everything with his camera. Thankfully, Kyle managed to emerge from his terrifying episode unharmed and has since shared his footage.

Illegal Batman THE latest Batman movie, starring British actors Robert Pattinson and Colin Farrell, is still being filmed in Liverpool despite the latest restrictions recently announced. The Merseyside city has been turned into the famous streets of Gotham despite the real-life Tier Three restrictions being put into place by the government due to the high number of Covid-19 cases in the area. The newest incarnation of the Batman character is being played by actor Robert Pattinson, who may have surprised the residents of Liverpool with his appearance on the set of the movie, with many of them facing harsher Covid-19 restrictions.

Beacon of Hope AN eightyearold boy has been called a “beacon of hope” for people at risk of blindness after receiving cuttingedge gene replacement therapy. The boy is the first ever Canadian to receive this ingenious new thera py for his rare form of blindness which left the boy, Sam, unable to make out shapes in the dark, seeing the sky on a cloudy day, and had trouble making out his shoes. It was a very worrying time for Sam and his family as his condition was progressive and would only get worse as he got older but there was no known treatment for it. Thanks to this ingenious new treatment the boy’s sight has improved tenfold.
Access Denied A NEW facecovering detection technology, first used in White ley’s Garden Centre in Mirfield, West Yorkshire to detect if shop pers were wearing a face mask, is now being rolled out across re tail stores in the UK. The tech nology involves cameras being fitted at the entrance to stores that are able to detect whether a person is wearing a covering over their mouth or nose.
If the system detects a shop per is not wearing a face mask, a red message flashes onto a screen and they are denied ac cess. It means shops installing the software no longer have to manually staff the door and workers can avoid altercations with noncompliant customers a regular occurrence apparent ly.

HITLER’S globeshaped bar is being sold at auction and resembles the globe, which the Führer so desperately wanted to conquer. Hitler was a dictator of luxury and his personal yacht was home to a stunning globe shaped bar. The bar is now going to auction in the US and is expected to make $250,000 (€215,000). Easy Trace POLICE in the UK have been granted access to details of people told to selfisolate by the Test and Trace system. The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has con firmed it had “agreed on a memorandum of understand ing with the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC)” to pro vide forces with the informa tion on a “casebycase basis.” In a statement, the DHSC said: “It is a legal requirement for people who have tested positive for Covid19 and their close contacts to selfisolate when formally notified to do so.” Police can issue fines starting at £1,000 for first offences, which can scale up to £10,000 for repeat offences and serious breaches of the law.

COVID Police! LOCAL POLICE in Andalucia have started to check up on people who are supposed to be selfisolating at home. The Ministry of Health wants to make sure that people who have tested positive for Covid19 are sticking to the quarantine rules. The Local Police have now been handed control with penalties reaching €60,000. To try to avoid these breaches, the Min istry of Health and Families of the Junta de Andalucia and the Andalucian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FAMP) have reinforced the measures so that these quarantines are strictly followed.
Nuclear Sea CONTROVERSY mounts as Japan are considering releasing the treated radioactive water from the destroyed nuclear plant Fukushima into the sea. The debate has been going on for several years with the Japanese government and environmen talists on how to dispose of the liquid in which some of the water was used to cool the power station. As anger mounts from environment and fish ing groups who are concerned about the effects this would have on the ocean, scientists argue that the filtered water would be diluted 40 times before being released and any risk to the environ ment would be extremely low.
NHS Air THE UK Space Agency has today backed a healthcare drone startup founded by NHS staff, to help in the response to Covid19. The pandemic has seen the country pulling to gether, with organisations across the space sector stepping forward to help. Apian, part of the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Pro gramme, aims to establish a network of secure air corridors for electric drones to navigate via satellite enabled GPS. Each drone will be able to carry Covid19 samples, testkits and PPE. This will avoid courier callout wait ing times, freeup NHS staff, reduce unnecessary physical contact and minimise the risk of secondary transmission of the virus.
New Record A MOUNTAINEER has set a new record days af ter recovering from Covid19. The inexperienced mountaineer, Akke Rahman, from Oldham set the record for climbing the mountain in Russia in just 24 hours, after recovering from coron avirus just five days prior to the climb. Bad Jobs at Risk Beer AN industry watchdog has fined Heineken’s pub business £2m for forcing pubs to sell ‘un reasonable levels’ of its own beers and ciders. The major beer brand runs Star Pubs and Bars, and according to the Pubs Code Adju dicator (PCA), it ‘seri ously and repeatedly’ broke rules for three years after receiving complaints from sever al pubs that were pres sured into selling Heineken brands which includes Amstel, Birra Moretti and Bul mers cider. Star Pubs includes 2,500 pubs of which, 1,900 are covered by the PCA in England and Wales.

Lloyds Staff Cuts LLOYDS Banking Group announced more jobs cuts on Thursday October 15, with 125 office staff being readied to be let go. According to Accord, which is one of its staff unions, the group’s internal audit team and retail chief operating office are likely to be most affected. Huge Gesture A GROUP of friends hired a crane to surprise a cancer pa tient in hospital. The women rented the crane to visit a friend with can cer who has been in a hospital in Argentina for two months. The coronavirus pandemic has meant visits to Gabriela, 52, have been restricted, and although her friends stay in touch through video calls, the women wanted to do some thing special.
They had the crane placed underneath her bedroom window at the Fleming Hospi tal, and surprised Gabriele with an ‘injection of encour agement’ to continue her fight against cancer during the health crisis. The 12 women, who were carrying balloons and ban ners, have all been friends for more than 10 years, having met through a running group from La Plata.

A 93YEAROLD woman called Derbyshire Police ‘in a very distressed state’ about her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Toby, who had gone missing. PC Tammy Wood, of the local Safer Neighbourhood policing team, visited the elderly woman’s home in Matlock to check she was okay. While PC Wood was there talking to her about the situation, she helped the pen sioner to reach an item which had fallen on the floor. As the officer knelt down, she noticed Toby was lying quietly underneath the woman’s recliner, said Derbyshire Police. PC Wood freed Toby from under the chair. He had been missing for almost two days but appeared to be ‘well, just hungry and thirsty.’
THE family of a civilian contractor who was accidentally killed by a trainee F-16 pilot has been awarded an undisclosed settlement. The F-16 pilot, along with his instructor, were undertaking his first night-time live fire exercise when they both mistook the observation area for the target. The unnamed pilot shot Charles Holbrook, 53, through the head with a 20mm round. Mr Holbrook was rushed to Gerald Champion Regional Medical Centre in Alamogordo, New Mexico but later died. Mr Holbrook’s wife filed a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of herself and their 14-yearold daughter. A settlement has now been awarded for an undisclosed amount by the United States Magistrate on Wednesday, October 14.

Since these gibbons are exclusively treedwellers, they cannot hope to cross the damaged forest floor without help. Rope bridges could also be used to connect habitats in other areas, experts say, expanding the territory of the endangered gibbons even further.

IT is certainly tit for tat in the battle between the European Union and the USA over support for their aircraft manufac turers with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) acting in the mid dle as each complains about the other. Put succinctly, both countries submitted complaints to the WTO on October 6, 2004 with the USA complaining that Airbus in France,

Germany, Spain and the UK was receiving im proper government sup port to develop the A380 and A350 aircraft. The EU complained in turn that Washington State had offered tax breaks to Boeing so that they would attract the company to produce wings for the 777 and this ran until 2019 when it was withdrawn at the Boeing’s request. ruled on America’s com plaint and it has since im posed tariffs to a total of $7.5 billion (€6.4 billion) on imports not just for Air bus aircraft and European aircraft parts, but a whole range of different prod ucts including Spanish olives and Scotch whisky. Now the WTO has completed its review on the EU claim and has ap proved the imposition of tariffs up to a total of $4 billion (€3.4 billion) on
imports from America and the EU has already drawn up a list of goods which will be targeted with new charges. Airbus is refunding some of the subsidies re ceived from France and Spain in an effort to try to bring the dispute to an end and although both sides say that they want to settle the mat ter, it is the consumer who will suffer in the meantime.

The ambassador listed the rights of UK citizens which will continue to be in effect un der the Withdrawal Agreement. These include the right to live and work in Spain, lifelong healthcare for pensioners in Spain and UK pension rights. Finally I wish to beg your pardon for the confu sion caused to readers and to point out that hold ers of the certificate can apply for a TIE at any time next year.

A COMBINED operation be tween the Guardia Civil, Na tional Police and Spanish Tax Agency saw raids at three ille gal cigarette factories and the seizure of 43 tons of tobacco, almost 1.5 million packs of cig arettes and large amounts of machinery. The factories which were based in Madrid, Murcia and Alicante were controlled by a Bulgarian gang and the value of the material recovered by this action is said to be €9 mil lion with 14 different brands of cigarette being counterfeit ed. A total of 38 different peo ple of various nationalities in
cluding several Ukrainians were arrested during this op eration and apart from ma chinery capable of producing 189,000 cigarettes a minute, officers also discovered a number of lorries already loaded with cartons ready to be distributed throughout Spain and much of Europe. Four of the fake cigarette brands being produced, Fortu na, Winston, L & M and Chesterfield are particularly popular in Spain and the Tax Agency will have lost huge amounts of VAT and duty from their sale as will the manufacturers of the origi nals.

The intention is to try to re structure and save the business but closure of at least 50 EWM shops with the loss of 600 jobs is expected. The Group, controlled by Dubaibased British entrepre neur Philip Day additionally owns the Peacock fast fashion chain which in turn has more than 500 outlets around the UK as well as other smaller opera tions, all of which could be in trouble.
Spanish poverty line DESPITE protestations from the Spanish government that the economy is recovering, a telling report, just issued by Eurostat, (the European statis tical office) indicates that Spain is the fifth poorest coun try in the European Union and it moves to third place for the country with the poorest resi dents under 16. The Spanish poverty level is based on the number of households that take home less than 60 per cent of the av erage annual income and Spain at 20.7 per cent comes after Romania, Latvia, Bulgaria and Estonia, but for poor chil dren only Romania and Bul garia have more. vived until the winter. Although BA has been hit with the highest fine ever issued by the UK Information Commissioner’s Of fice (ICO), shareholders and compa ny executives are breathing a sigh of relief as it was originally believed that the fine for the breach of secu rity in 2018 (with 400,000 passenger details lost) would be in the region of £183 million (€200 million).

Spain worried about delay

SPAIN’S Minister for the Econo my Nadia María Calviño has in dicated that discussions are still taking place concerning dis bursement of the European Union’s coronavirus recovery fund, of which Spain is one of the largest potential recipients. The problem appears to be with regards to control and over sight of the use of the funds which were supposed to be dis tributed early in the New Year in order to help kickstart members economies. Speaking to American Bloomberg TV the minister said “We are doing our utmost to ac celerate this process so that we can start the implementation of the recovery plan on January 1, 2021.” She was very upbeat in her
view of the Spanish economy go ing forward and suggested that market confidence in Spain is strong and that the ruling minori ty government would shortly be able to finalise the 2021 budget which would incorporate dis bursement of the European Union funds. In the meantime, the Euro pean Central Bank is buying up Government Bonds and this not only allows countries like Spain to reduce its borrowing from more expensive sources, but means that it is able to reduce its bor rowing forecast by almost €15 billion during 2020. The problem in the short term, with so many commitments to support furloughed workers, pay social security, guarantee compa ny bank loans and still run the

THIS week we caught up with Marc Quinlan, owner of the Harbour bar and restaurant Marbella and Amazonica at the Playwright in Elviria, to talk about how things are changing on the coast.
MARC, originally from Dublin, has been here for 18 years, raised four children and owned, operated and sold many businesses, from bars to inflatable water parks, he’s a wellknown and loved character in the area, and I was lucky enough to be taken on a minitour with him and his son, Jordan. Marc’s first restaurant Becketts opened in 2003, he saw a gap in the market and opened the first real international bar in Marbella. When Ireland changed from the Punt to the Euro, he foresaw the Irish tourism boom and Becketts was just what Marbella needed. It’s a rare thing to find, not just reliable, but ade quately qualified staff here on the Costa Del Sol as so many people find it hard to adjust to living in a tourism destination. Marc’s had his fair share of crazy chefs and awful bar staff, but the team with him now really are the dream team. With his wife Penny run ning the front of house, keeping staff in line and stan dards high, they bring a wellneeded air of profes sionalism that’s missing in many parts of the Costa del Sol. There is a reason they still have staff with them who have stood by Marc’s side right from the very start of his venture at Becketts. Marc’s a visionary, he designs everything himself from custom cocktail glasses to ostrich heads and flamingos, he really does see things in a very unique way, and it must be so in spiring to work for someone who truly puts the guests’ experience at the forefront of their business. Marc’s staff have followed him from strength to strength and he encourages and nurtures their tal ents. The refurb of The Playwright may appear to

most as being crazy given the current climate and pandemic we find ourselves in, however, in Marc’s eyes it was exactly what people wanted and needed, and he couldn’t have been more right. He gave the community a reason to get dressed up and feel good about themselves again. Community is important to Marc and it shows, when he took on the Harbour Bar and Restaurant, he did so on the condition that it became open to the public. After the recession in 2008 and 2009, Marc learnt from Becketts that targeting just the Irish and English tourists and expat community was not viable, he now enjoys success with all his ventures which have become melting pots of cultures. On the subject of cultures, Marc told me an inter esting story, have you ever heard of a place called Ba tumi? Nope, me neither... but it turns out to be the secondlargest city in Georgia and is a city twinned with Marbella. On a chance encounter Marc met some members of the government whilst they were dining at The Playwright, he then opened the follow ing day for a private lunch for the officials. This ges ture on Marc’s part, has led to multiple opportunities for him in the country, and he actually splits his time between Georgia and Marbella equally now as hotel developments, revolving restaurants and culinary schools ( to name a few) take up a fair chunk of his time. It just goes to show there are still plenty of op portunities here on the Costa Del Sol! When Marc is home in Marbella, he has much more free time and spends lots of it helping neigh bouring businesses. Playing a huge role in the com munity supporting and encouraging both new and longstanding establishments along the coast. For anyone struggling, especially with the pandemic causing a lot of people to lose sight of the light at the end of the tunnel, Marc is offering free advice to anyone who needs it. Starting his career in the kitchen he knows the industry inside out and back to front. decor is anything but cold, it feels cosy and welcoming. Like a lot of bars and restau rants in the area, they have seen a decline in bookings, however, they’re very much open for business as usual. Booking is still required for Sunday Lunch and the tradi tional Roast Beef and Yorkshire pudding is a winner! They do still recommend booking for the rest of the week also as locals have made it a regular haunt for social gettogethers. Opening hours at La Scala are currently Tuesday Satur day 6.30pm Midnight and Sundays Staff at la Scala.

Around the corner we arrive at Harmons Irish Bar, owned by the effervescent utterly charming Tracy. The terrace is well spaced out following new guide lines, but there are plenty of people about enjoying their evening with a lovely Guinness on draught and really welcoming staff, it’s no wonder it’s a favourite for a tipple with the locals. Opening hours here are MondayFriday 4pm 11pm (depending on how busy they are) Saturday and Sunday from 1pm. Food served from 5pm. Straight over the square there is RokaBar, again with a nicely laid out terrace and a lovely atmos phere, food is served here until 10pm and I’m told ‘Henry’s Ribs’ with sweet potato fries and slaw are seriously tasty! They’re open seven days a week from 5pm till 1am. We made our way back to The Playwright and the place was ‘alive’, every table was taken, the atmos phere was like nothing I’ve come across in a long time, Marc’s mission to give people a reason to get dressed up and feel good has been a success, the food coming out of the kitchen looked and smelt di vine, with dishes like Slow Cooked Sticky Pork Belly marinated with Kimchi, Bok Choi, Green Beans & Spinach with Fried Noodles and a cocktail list includ
ing Lychee & Coconut Rum Punch, you really are transported into a whole new world. The live music isn’t overpowering, it’s entertaining and done with el egance. So as the UK press reports that tourism is on its knees and the Costa del Sol is empty, they couldn’t be any further from the truth, Elviria especially is thriving! ‘Us and them’ I’m afraid LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT NEVER has my constant harping about legal aid lawyer fees been more justified than by the events that took place just recently. Nineteen out of 20 illegal immigrants, who, after months of wrangling, were finally being deported, became prevented from leaving, after last minute actions by their lawyers gained them a stay of ‘execution.’ Ultimately, only one finally flew off into the great blue good riddance. Once again the so called ‘activist’ lawyers, managed to retain a lucrative number of customers for their dubious companies, allowing them, under the umbrella of the ridiculous ’uman rights regulations, to bleed the British taxpayer even further. The amount this modern day, second rate bunch of shylocks is coining in is really quite frightening. I tried a little research and found that their fees begin at something like £100 an hour.
Assuming they spend five hours a day on a case and multiply that by the 19 illegals they managed to hold back, then this batch alone can bring in some £9,500 a DAY. Multiply that by the amount of weeks or months it takes to resolve these cases and you begin to get some idea of the money these individuals are gleefully conning out of the public purse. And these 19 are only one example. There are literally hundreds of other cases we never even get to hear about. One assessment I came across, was that lawyers who specialise in immigrant cases are costing the tax payer around £100 million a year! Personally I think that is probably a conservative figure and in reality it is much higher. You can rest assured than none of these sharks have any moral or patriotic obligations to the British public. They are simply hell bent on screwing the tax payer out of all they can get. Remember also, these were the same low lifes who went knocking on doors in the Middle East, in an attempt to inveigle the citizens in war areas to lodge complaints against British soldiers
so their companies could begin legal actions against our brave men and women in the military. They are the lowest of the low and need hitting where it will really hurt, right in their grubby money grabbing wallets. Their fees, particularly where it involves illegal immigrants, must be capped and capped pretty low at that. If they really do have consciences and truly do care about these people, let ‘em take on a few cases pro bono. Ha! You’ve more chance of having a foxtrot with our dear Queen Elizabeth in Harrods’ window than seeing that particular scenario. Personally I can’t see why the government doesn’t take some action against this very obvious, wholly unacceptable extortion racket. Unless of course the bosses are all members of the same old boys’ club; which is a far more likely scenario. ‘Us and them’ once again I’m afraid. Not because I’m not grumpy, because I am, but I seem to be grumpy about the same things all the time. Things like trying to pay cash into the bank or trying to use the voucher that the supermarket sent you but you are one day early or one day late. Spanish law where you can’t get rid of a useless community gardener that is a lunatic with a chainsaw that just hacks at everything and the company that he works for is just as bad. So you termi nate their contract only to find out that the new company has to employ the same gardener as the old one didn’t have a garden for him to mutilate. So, are you ready for this, he takes the new company to court and wins!!! Absolute lunacy. But what really is getting at me at the moment are ‘experts.’ Not experts with degrees and PhDs who work out of lab oratories and secret bunkers with direct data, but the ones sitting in their arm
chairs and know everything about everything. l don’t mean the ones that have a slightly different point of view. I’m talking about the ones that ex plain why we are all mugs and this is the truth. And how do they know that? Well because they read or watched something different to what I read or watched and decided that what they read is right and that’s it. They’re actu ally very condescending. It looks like I’ve lost my bet that Trump would last four years. My loss but Cudeca’s gain. I’ve lost a few bets in my time but this one just astounds me because never in my lifetime have I seen and heard directly from people in volved with him say what a piece of work he is. Anyone want a bet if he will do another four years? Hopefully it will be in prison. Lock him up!! MORE than 1,000 people are being asked to ‘immediately’ quit their homes in six London tower blocks amid cladding and building safety fears. Residents of the flats in the Paragon estate in Brentford, including nearly 700 students, will now be offered alternative accommodation until all the buildings are declared safe by safety inspectors. The notforprofit housing association Notting Hill Gene sis (NHG) said it had taken the decision to vacate the estate following expert advice that “the construction of the build ings may be putting residents at risk.”

OOPS: Schofield’s memoirs spell Holmes’ name wrong. PHILLIP SCHOFIELD has fuelled his Eamonn Holmes feud by accidentally spelling the former This Morning rival’s name wrong in his new memoirs. Every reference to Eamonn Holmes in the This Morning’s presenters’ book, ‘Life Is What You Make It,’ is spelt with one ‘N’ rather than two. “If it’s a joke, Eamonn certainly wasn’t in on it and the error has ruffled feathers, yet again,” a close source said. The embarrassing slip apparently happens four times in the book, published by Michael Joseph. Relations between the ITV stars soured when Eamonn’s wife Ruth Langsford, 60, made an official complaint against Schofield, 58, last year. A source close to Phillip said, “It’s a genuine typo - Phil didn’t have a clue. He’ll be mortified to think he might have upset Eamonn.”

CANARIES DEAR Reader, Into October and no time to write until now. Excuse this late letter. Here, just when the weather turned into usual winter Trade Wind mode (blue skies, fluffy clouds, fresh breezes, hot sun), back blasts the Calima from Africa to make us sweat at 33º in the shade, but it’ll be gone tomorrow, whereas our main sweat, the ab sence of tourist bucks, won’t. It’s exercising everyone now. Canarian tourist head Yaiza Castilla’s campaign to at tract long stay homeworkers, online work ers churning out internet fodder or whatev er the boss wants, from wherever the biz is based, may alleviate things. Accomodation providers who aren’t still ostriching reality have dropped prices accordingly for longer stays. Anybody interested in winter sun, relax ing on beaches, great nature and eating well should book cheap flights and escape down here for a month or so. All the airlines have dropped prices and waived cancellation or change fees. They’re strapped for cash too. I’d stay off Covid, promise, but I’ve been to England since my last missive and want to reveal that, as far as travelling goes, there are two stories. The experience may interest you if you’re hesitant about a trip to or from the UK, but I’ve asked around and German, Dutch, French, Austrian and Belgians here have similar tales to tell. One is the official story of restrictions, checks and dangers. Two is what really hap pens. One you know. Here’s Two: a visit to
my elderly mother, unseen since February because of all the malarky, was overdue. I hadn’t gone because I thought I couldn’t. Come September, it was evident Covid would outrun the Mousetrap, so I chanced it. Yes, you download a form for the English health authorites and show it on arrival. Yes, there are fewer people in airports and on planes, but that’s lovely. Theoretically, you’re located and check able. In reality nobody phoned, or checked in any way, to make sure I was complying. I was, but who knew? The lack of regard for Covid there: few masks on the street, people crowding into shops, pubs and public transport, took me aback. Feeling vulnerable, I thought about getting tested, but the total unavailability of tests there was astonishing. I thought I’d get a private test. Not possible. The extraor dinary debacle there would be funny if it weren’t sad. Flying home to the Canaries was the same. There’s a compulsory form for Span ish health authorities, checked on arrival and logged for tracking. Nobody followed it up. Neither did they need to, as I’d booked a PCR test en route from the airport to the ferry home. OK, I paid €85, but came home knowing I was clear. Therein lies the answer! Travel responsi bly, mask, distancing, gel etc, and pay for PCR tests to avoid uncertainty and quaran tine. If tourist destinations imposed PCR test ing on all visitors immediately before boarding planes in countries of origin, we’d all be fine. ¡Buen viaje! Joint Forces SCUM-BAGS AND TOE-RAGS THE UK and Spain have called for a halt to Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. The UK and Spain joined forces with Germany, France and Italy to pen a strongly worded statement condemning the planned expansion of settlements by the occupying Israeli administration. The United Nations and European Union have also spoken out against the plans to build almost 5,000 new housing units on the occupied West Bank. EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell called settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories ‘illegal.’
Rough Justice A CHILD abuser in Brians 2 in Sant Esteve Sesrovires (Barcelona) was killed by anoth er prisoner ‘as punishment.’ In statements to an investi gating Granollers judge, prison officers explained that the ag gressor stabbed the 32yearold victim “very aggressively” 27 times in the back in the exercise yard. As the warders ap proached, he called out to them: “Don’t come near, this isn’t against you. He’s a pimp, a child abuser. Don’t worry,
he’s dead now.” The judge concluded that the killer, who is 37 and serving a long sentence for murder, set out to punish the second man. The dead prisoner had been convicted of prostituting chil dren and the disabled as well as sexist violence, offences that the author of the crime regard ed as inexcusable. He is now accused of murder with intent and unjustified mal ice, having acted without any provocation on the part of the dead prisoner, the judge said.
DAVID WORBOYS C O N T R I B U T O R S to the ‘popular’ newspapers and Twitter tend to dis miss people they don’t relate to, or whose opinions they don’t share, in the most aggressive language. If the victims are fortunate, they may get away with being described as morons or idiots. At worst they are scum bags or toe rags. Celebrities such as politicians, TV presenters, pop singers, footballers and royalty are constantly picked up on by invisible commentators armed with a pen or a keyboard. From Jere my Corbyn and Bob Geldof to Wayne Rooney and Prince Harry, they have been mocked or viciously attacked. Popular female targets range from Diane Abbott and Kim Kardashian to Meghan Markle, Victoria Beckham and Nicola Sturgeon all decent, harmless people with their own ways of doing things. Although it’s not easy to feel sym pathy for people who are selfcentred
or palpably evil, I don’t find these terms appropriate even for such peo ple in our society. Donald Trump may be a thoroughly unpleasant person, selfabsorbed, dishonest and unprincipled. He may preach lies and nonsense about his opponents and may have deeply flawed intelligence and judgement. But this doesn’t make him a scum bag. The Sunday Times claims still to be a quality paper and it has some inter esting columnists and excellent con tributors on subjects such as history, politics and economics. But, as it seeks to appeal to all lev els of taste and education, it also has Camilla Long. I have not met her and can only judge by what she writes, but she comes across as a bitter woman who hates the world around her. Many of her subjects have granted her an interview in good faith and al most all of them are, judging from her text and photographs, more attrac tive, more successful and nicer peo ple than she is. She therefore reacts resentfully by tearing them apart in the most hate
ful way. She mocks their appearance (buck teeth), questions their intelli gence (airheads), and sneers at their occupations (clothes horses) for no apparent reason. Furthermore, she writes as if her readership goes along with her diatribes. “As we all know, she hasn’t a clue how to dress.” Several things alarm me about this. First is the esteem in which she seems to be held by the readers of this once fine newspaper (under Harold Hob son), and second, the fact that she was voted interviewer of the year in 2016 at the British Press awards. This exemplifies gutter journalism. To judge from her writing, she regards sex as something dirty. Her favourite words include, ‘bum’, ‘tits’, ‘shag’, ‘cock’ and ‘crap’, terms we used at school. She seems obsessed with body parts and bodily functions, de scribed in suitably barrackroom lan guage. What happened to kindness and courtesy? To me this crude intoler ance towards the different views and choices, the character and appear ance of others suggests she has her own problems. But she is not a toe rag.

BRITISH AIRWAYS have been fined £20 million by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) over data breach which affected more than 400,000 customers. Following an investigation lasting almost two years, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) concluded that British Airways did not have sufficient security measures in place to process such a significant amount of personal data. In a statement, the ICO said, “People entrusted their personal details to BA and BA failed to take adequate measures to keep those details secure.”
MARBELLA MOMENTS BY NICOLE KING A FEW months ago a dear friend went through a harrowing experi ence when her frying pan caught fire. The hob hadn’t quite turned off and a slither of the pan had been warming up whilst she slept. Fortu nately although left with a charred kitchen and blackened apartment nothing more serious happened. Over the past few days the same situation has come up again. A droplet of water in a pan of oil caused a nearby bottle of oil to catch fire and a torch like flame was the surprise they found when returning but moments later into the room. Again thankfully the outcome was optimum but it could easily have been so much worse. Reacting correctly is the key and that’s why I thought it pertinent to write about it this week. Above all, keep calm. Turn off the heat if you can or cut the
kitchen electricity fuse if possible as grease fires need heat to stay lit. If you have time, it is preferable to wear gloves. The easiest way to put out a grease fire is to cover it with a lid or another larger pan. With the lid on (and no heat), the fire will con sume all the oxygen and will extin guish itself. Do not use glass lids, as they can break from the extreme heat of the open flame. You can also throw in lots of baking soda and or table salt as this cuts off the oxygen supply. Do not substitute the salt of bak ing powder for alternatives such as flour as it doesn’t react in the same way. Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES throw water on a grease fire. Al though instinctively we think wa ter puts out a fire it is the number one mistake when it comes to a fat fire. Water is heavier than oil and it will sink to the bottom of the pot, overheat and evaporate
quickly spreading the fire in all di rections. Another common mistake people make is trying to move the pot with the fire to another location, like outside, where the fire is likely to do less damage. It’s a mistake. Charging the pot with hot oil may cause it to spill and burn you or any other flammable item it comes in contact with. This is important so again; don’t try to move the pot. All the above is only effective for small fires and if in doubt tele phone the fire brigade on 112 (or locally in Marbella 080). Also im portant to remember is that smoke inhalation can cause permanent damage or worse and your life is worth more than even your most treasured items in the house so please don’t hesitate to evacuate your home. Write Rather Than Think The first step I take with all of my clients is journalling. Write down your current negative thought. What is the situation that has caused this thought? Do you have any physical evidence that makes this thought true? By writing down your actual thoughts, help you recognise and name it without judgement. You
may even notice that your painful feelings disappear after a while. ‘This too shall pass’ can become words to live by. You Can’t Control A Person or Situation Outside Of You This is a statement I live by dai ly. You are only in control of you! Whilst you cannot control a situa tion or person outside of you, you can control the emotions that you attach to it. Do not dismiss or ig nore your emotion as that will not make the pain go away. Acknowl edge the distress and accept it as your present reality. Accepting does not mean you like it, it only means that you can put these un pleasant thoughts to the front and centre of your mind, rather than allowing them to float un consciously under the surface Be Your Own Best Friend Eighty per cent of our
thoughts are negative, we can be really mean to ourselves. Ask yourself, is that the way you would treat your best friend? Selflove is so important. Study on experimental blood tests
RESEARCHERS believe one day an experimental blood test may be able to detect a range of diseases including cancer and multiple sclerosis (MS). The study is still in its early stages but researchers believe it opens up vast possibilities and could offer ‘huge potential,’ however they admit it is still far from clinical use. So far, the method has been tested on 320 patients and controls, and has shown success in finding diseases such as pancreatic cancer, diabetes, traumatic brain injury and multiple sclerosis. Scientists have known for some time that dying cells release fragmented DNA into the circulating blood. When cells die, it can mean a disease is just beginning to take hold, and the researchers are now looking at new methods in which they can use this knowledge to identify diseases from a blood test, detecting cell death in specific tissues. The technology is based on next-generation DNA sequencing.

silent disease GLAUCOMA: Affects around one million people in Spain.
G L AU C O M A is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide and affects a total of 60 million people in the world. In Spain, it affects around a million people, but it is believed around 500,000 suffer unknowingly, making it known as the silent disease. Glaucoma is an eye disease whose main characteristic is the loss of vision due to progressive damage that occurs to the optic nerve. T he main risk factor is ocular hypertension. If
the pressure within the eyeball increases, the optic nerve is compressed and neurons that form are damaged, causing cell death of these and decreasing the field of view patient. “The earlier the diagnosis the better and the sooner you can put the brakes on the disease,” said president of the A ssociation of Glaucoma for patients and their families ( A G A F ), D elfina B alonga. It is recommended you have eye tests
every two years from the age of 40 and annually after the age of 50. “The big problem of glaucoma is that if not detected early it can cause serious vision problems and in 5 per cent of cases, total blindness.” It can appear at any time of life, but it is more common after the age of 60 and there are several risk factors such as diabetes, family history, high myopia and high blood pressure.

Losing weight could all be in the mind MINDFULNESS has been credited with a host of benefits. We have tried the endless faddy diets and latest fitness crazes in a bid to lose weight, but could the key be all in the mind? Scientists claim that mindfulness, a meditation-like technique that is becoming increasingly popular, can help people to tune into the body’s hunger signals. This will result in only eating when you need to. Mindfulness has already been credited with a host of health benefits, from easing depression to boosting the immune system, and a leading British obesity expert has said it may be the ‘missing link’ in the search for an effective weight loss technique. Dutch researchers carried out a series of studies to see if mindfulness stops people from eating excessively. They analysed data on more than 400 people who had undergone regular weigh-ins over two and a half years. It found people who are ‘naturally mindful’ were better able to recognise when they are hungry, meaning their weight fluctuates less than people who are less aware. Mindfulness involves blocking out distractions, focusing in the present and listening to your body.

Steven Saunders FMCGB The Little Geranium La Cala de Mijas www.thelittlegeranium.com ETON MESS is a traditional Eng lish dessert dating back to the late 1800s originating from Eton college. It was served at the Eton school’s annual cricket matches and became famous when the English people dis covered that they loved meringue, cream and fresh fruits. Everything related to the dish encapsulated the English summer. Whipped fresh cream, English strawberries, raspberries and blueberries were often added, usually served up with tennis or crick et. Now chefs love evolving recipes, but you have to be careful. Careful because some classics should be just left alone. Heston Blumenthal said that he couldn’t and wouldn’t change Eton Mess and conclud ed that although it looks messy that is where the tradition lies. I like Heston but he is not al

Steven and Michel making meringues at home. ways right. Mushed up fruit and meringue served in a glass is not very 21st century. I saw this as a challenge and so I went into my home kitchen and started messing about
with meringues. I tried many different ways of serving them with cream and summer fruits to make them more attractive but keep ing the thread of the dish. Then
I remembered my days at The Savoy in London where I had spent my training and I used to pipe little blobs of meringue for a dish they served in a martini glass with fruits.
On one occasion I had piped over a thousand little blobs for the Queen Mother’s birthday party and it came to mind when I was holding the piping bag filled with the meringue mix. So, I piped a tray of tiny meringue blobs and also a spread meringue (like spread ing butter) so that I could have little crisps of meringue. The two different types would add textures. I cooked them really slowly at 100ºC for about one hour. When I felt them, they were hard on the outside as they should be but soft in the cen tre. The spread meringue will be crisp all the way through. Then I went to work on laying out the dish on the plate. The dish I created looked quite beautiful but still simple and when served to the guests, it really has the wow factor! I sent an Instagram mes sage and photo of the new
Eton Mess to Heston with the picture but he didn’t respond. In fact, out of the 26,000 fol lowers he has, he follows just none! Heston does not fol low anyone so hence he would never have seen my creation! If you want to be really cre ative you can get even more ‘Hestony’ by serving the plate under a glass dome with liquid nitrogen (dry ice) which we have often done at the Gerani um. I hope that I have helped evolve and improve the ap pearance of this classic but not change the flavours or the tex tures of the original dish. We are getting to see the last of the summer fruits now so if you want to make some thing really special with them then have a go at this recipe and impress your guests with your cooking and presentation skills. Ingredients for Meringue (recipe below makes about eight portions) 160g of egg white 160g of caster sugar 160g of icing sugar Method for Meringues Preheat the oven to 100°C or lowest gas mark setting Whisk the egg whites until very stiff then gradually add the caster sugar. Beat until in corporated, then finally add the icing sugar and whisk un til combined. Put in a piping bag and pipe into small 2cm domes onto a baking tray lined with parch ment paper or a silicone bak ing mat which makes life a lot easier!
Also pipe one large blob and spread thinly with a palette knife to create a sheet of meringue about ¼ cm thick. Place the meringues in the oven for one hour and then check them, the outer shell should be firm. For the raspberry sauce (coulis) 1 punnet raspberries 150g sugar/100ml of water in saucepan until sugar dissolves and becomes a little syrupy) Method for raspberry sauce Cook the raspberries in the sugar syrup until they break down and then blend in a
food processor. Finally pass through a fine sieve to remove the seeds For the meringue crisps Take the sheet of cooked meringue and break with your fingers into small 2cm pieces. Reserve. To dress the meringues 1 punnet of raspberries 1 punnet blueberries 1 punnet strawberries 250ml of fresh thick cream, lightly whipped 1 tablespoon of the raspberry sauce (above) To assemble the dessert Follow the picture in the arti
cle and try to get it straight, neat and tidy. Pipe little blobs of raspberry sauce (coulis) either in small piping bag or make a paper one from parchment/baking paper. Pipe blobs of fresh cream then add the domes of meringue followed by the fruits and finally the meringue crisps. Garnish and dress with the raspberry coulis. Note: You can freeze some raspberries and then lightly crush them and sprinkle over the dessert to finish.

fending allowed EPR a 20 win to make certain the cup was theirs. In fact the score could have been double except for some superb saves from Jonge Alex in the Bee’s goal. It was left to the local sides to play out for runnersup spot with Benahavis taking an early 20 lead. Home side Calahonda showed they had learned from their first game and inspired second half substitutions saw them claw back into the game and level the scores with Karl Lloyd causing the Finca to erupt with a last minute goal for a 32 win.
