FLYING POET

RESIDENTS of Alicante, Elche, and everywhere in between, have begun the process of collecting signatures in order to change the name of the Alicante­Elche air­ port. Organisers behind the pro­ posed plan want to change the name to the Miguel Hernández Airport to commemorate and highlight the famous Oriolano poet, with the first phase of their plan already launched as they look to praise the writer and bring new recognition to the po­ et’s work. One of the organisers, Julio Ríos said: “In the United States there are airports named after fa­ mous people, so we believe that

it is an opportunity to give rise to the poet and to represent the en­ tire province.” Miguel Hernández was a 20th­ century poet and playwright who died of tuberculosis in 1942, aged 31, after being imprisoned due to his active participation on the Re­ publican side of the civil war. Having escaped the death­ penalty, his last book, Cancionero

y Romancero de Ausencias, was published after his death, and this collection of the poems written in prison, some on pieces of toilet paper and others preserved in letters to his wife, is considered one of the finest pieces of Spanish poetry of the 20th century.

Dolphins Return Spotted DOLPHINS have been spotted off the coast Guardamar del Segura with a video shot by a local resident garnering over 10,000 views and shares on so­ cial media.

The dolphins were shown to be following the boat of pas­ senger Rosana Aldeguer, which is not uncom­ mon behaviour for dolphins who like to furrow the wake

left by the boats and surround them. MeteOrihuela, the meteo­ rological project of Pedro José Gómez who shared the footage, recommended that,

if groups of dolphins are spotted near your own boat, it is best to reduce the speed to less than four knots or, di­ rectly, stop the engine. Similar dolphin sightings have occurred in recent months on the coast of the province, with Pilar de la Horadada, Dé­ nia and Calpe all receiving visits from the diving delights.

Fashion Success A LOCAL fashion show has successfully raised a huge amount for the SAT Animal Rescue charity. The fashion show in La Ma­ rina experienced an amazing turnout and managed to raise a whooping €1,284, with

all the proceeds going towards the SAT Ani­ mal Rescue charity to help our furry little friends. Included in the huge amount was €465 which came thanks to a charity head shave of local resident, John.

Flying Poet The organisers have been collecting signatures through WhatsApp and their objective is to turn the petition into a major resident movement, and in or­ der to reach the largest possible number of groups, they are hoping to make a significant im­ pact across social networks, with the aim of highlighting the poet’s legacy. The signatures will be pre­ sented at the Government Sub­

delegation. It is not the first time that the poet has been proposed for the name of the airport. In 2013, which is the last time the airport changed its name, Miguel Hernández was added to a list of potential re­ branding ideas, although it was eventually rejected, with ‘Elche’ being awarded the acknowl­ edgement with signage adapt­ ed to incorporate Elche on

them. Nowadays, only the acronym ALC continues to ap­ pear on tickets and flight infor­ mation, in reference to Ali­ cante. The proposal in 2013 was for Hernández to be the only name of the airport, however, this time the organisers of this peti­ tion are proposing both; either expand on the current name or change it completely.

€100,000 Fine

FINED AGAIN: Guardamar establishment fined again. AN establishment in Guardamar del Segura has been fined €100,000 for repeated offences including sales of alcohol to under­age customers. The latest complaint against an establishment was consid­ ered to be serious enough to warrant the huge fine, al­ though the business has repeatedly broken the law. The large fine is believed to be because the establishment failed to follow new Covid­19 rules restricting the sale of al­ cohol after 10pm. The business has previously paid fines totalling €15,000 over the last three years for repeated offences due to sales of alcohol to under­age customers. Joint surveillance carried out by Local Police and the Guardia Civil has proven to be successful against crimes that have the potential to cause harm to youngsters and also go against Covid­19 restrictions.

Two Officers Injured AFTER a driver failed to pass a breathalyser test in Ali­ cante, he managed to flee the scene injuring two police officers in the process. A 24­year­old man driving a car with Belgian plates was pulled over by the officers at 3am in Plaza de España after they suspected him of driving under the influence of alco­ hol, or narcotics. He managed to escape thanks to modern technology after he pressed the start en­ gine button despite police of­ ficers confiscating his keys and placing them on top of the car. Quarantine No Takers Skipping Youngster

A YOUNGSTER has been detained by Local Police in Alicante after escaping a detention centre in Murcia, skipping Covid­19 quarantine regulations and causing theft and damage to local establishments. Police officers were alerted by local residents to three youngsters causing trouble near the Hotel Meliá, in the port of Alicante and when they approached the scene one of them fled. Thankfully, officers were able to catch and detain the youngster before they found out the extent of his crimes. After speaking with officers, the detainee revealed they had escaped from a centre for young people in Murcia and was said to have neglected a quarantine period of 15 days because of their possible Covid­19 contamination. They were transferred to the General Hospital of Alicante to carry out further Covid­19 tests in the hopes that they were not carrying the virus. NOT IDEAL: Torrevieja police struggling to recruit.

Daily WhatsApp Workshops SCHOOL SPORTS: Programme cancelled in Orihuela until January. THE School Sports programme in Orihuela has been post­ poned until January due to Covid­19, in a decision made by Víctor Bernabéu, the councillor for Sports. The decision was made following a recent survey con­ ducted by the council at the different educational centres throughout the municipality in which the programme is pro­ vided. Results of a survey showed that six schools refused to par­ ticipate in the activities of the programme, while nine cen­ tres would participate in a team sports competition for as long as the pandemic allowed. “We have decided to postpone the School Sports pro­ gramme [until] the month of January, and then resume this service with all the guarantees and according to the demand of the schools,” Bernabéu said.

THE Department of Social Ser­ vices in Cartagena will be dis­ tributing workshop videos dai­ ly through the messaging communication app, What­ sApp, to the elderly residents of the region. The workshops serve to help the elderly to maintain healthy habits, improve memory, nu­ trition or personal safety. They also include cultural proposals, physical exercise and crafts so that they can enjoy quality leisure time. The deputy mayor and head of Social Services, Noelia Ar­ royo stated: “Our technicians

have made an effort to keep the entire programme de­ signed to keep our greatest physically and psychologically active going. “That is why we have organ­ ised [this] through WhatsApp, which is the way that most pre­ fer. In fact, we already have 300 seniors in our groups for the workshops,” Arroyo explained. The deputy mayor recalls that those without tablets, computers or smartphones can join the telecompany pro­ gramne the City Council launched at the beginning of the confinement.

TORREVIEJA are struggling to recruit Local Police officers af­ ter being unable to fill the 19 positions made available this year. The City Council launched a recruitment drive in May to cover the 19 vacant positions, however, they were unable to and this has been the case for around 12 years, according to reports. The city currently only has 135 officers, which includes of­ ficers and commanders, when it should have around 185. With Torrevieja struggling to recruit Local Police the situa­ tion is far from ideal, as the municipality has around 85,000 residents, a number that stands fifth in the demographic weight in the Valencian Community. According to the officer and union representative, José Antonio Moya: “[of the] 19 positions no one has come for­ ward. “At the last negotiating table, we invited the mayor to re­ flect on why no outside officer wants to come and those who are here want to leave,” he concluded.

THE UK Treasury has an­ nounced that it will pay two­ thirds of the pay packets of locked down workers up to a monthly value of £2,100 in a varied continuation of the fur­ lough scheme that has been helping support businesses and workers throughout the coron­ avirus pandemic. Furthermore, the govern­ ment will offer aid to business­ es in the form of £3,000 grants if they are required to close due to local lockdowns and the businesses will not be required to contribute to the payments. The chancellor Rishi Sunak said: “I have always said that we will do whatever is neces­ sary to protect jobs and liveli­ hoods as the situation evolves.”

Rights Infringed A BOLETIN OFICIAL DEL ESTADO (BOE) released from the Span­ ish government on September 19, 2020, presents a new change in the law that would see vitally important human rights and freedoms stripped. The BOE specifies new powers that affect the fundamental rights of Spanish citizens and residents by allowing the imple­ mentation of a law that would see the houses and private resi­ dences of the public able to be accessed on the demand of the health authorities via an administrative court. Health inspectors would give a very small three­day notice period to allow the oc­ cupants to appeal. Under the umbrella of the continuing Coronavirus pandemic, the law would allow health authorities to violate the privacy of residential premises by gaining authorisation through the ad­ ministrative court. An appeals process is in place for residents of premises that receive a notification of entry, however the three­day period can include weekend days. As such, an appeal of the decision may not be able to take place due to the resident not being able to find legal representation in time.

School Under Scrutiny THE British International School of Marbella on the Costa del Sol has come under scrutiny for failing to impose mask rules after it was re­ vealed several complaints had been made against the centre for not enforcing government safety measures.

The complaints were made af­ ter the school failed to follow mandatary mask regulations in­ sisting that there was “a little mis­ understanding” of the rules. The school, which costs around €1,200 a month, had not been complying with the mandatory

rules that state: “People aged six and over are required to use the mask on public roads, in outdoor spaces and any closed space for public use or open to the public.” The school continued to ne­ glect the rules despite having the information since July.

Pub Danger NEARLY a third of all coron­ avirus infections are linked to pubs and restaurants, ac­ cording to a government minister. Business minister Nadhim Zahawi said England’s Chief Medical Officer Chris Whit­ ty had presented the evi­ dence to MPs. Zahawi said: “Between restaurants, bars and cafes about 30 per cent of the infections are coming through that hospitality, so­ cial interactions if I can de­ scribe it as such.” Zahawi added: “And it is only right that we take ac­ tion with the local leader­ ship, with public health lo­ cal teams, because they know their area best.” This revelation comes as Central Scotland’s pubs and restaurants were forced to close on Friday October 9 in a bid to curb the recent spike in cases.

Crass Campaign THE UK government has criticised a ‘crass’ advertising cam­ paign encouraging a ballet dancer to ‘reboot’ their career and move into IT. The advert features a female dancer tying up her ballet pumps alongside the caption: ‘’Fatima’s next job could be in cyber. (She just doesn’t know it yet).’ It adds the slogan: ‘Rethink. Reskill. Reboot.’ In a tweet, culture secretary Oliver Dowden expressed re­ gret about the advert and said the campaign was not “some­ thing from @DCMS” (UK Government Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport) and agreed it was ‘crass.’

COVID Survives

CORONAVIRUS can survive at least 28 days on surfaces, according to a new study. Researchers at CSIRO, Australia’s national sci­ ence agency have found that SARS­CoV­2, the virus responsible for Covid­19, can survive for up to 28 days on common surfaces including ban­ knotes, glass ­ such as that found on mobile

phone screens ­ and stainless steel. The study found that the virus survived longer at lower temperatures and tended to survive longer on non­porous or smooth surfaces such as glass, stainless steel and vinyl, compared to porous complex surfaces such as cotton, as well as paper banknotes as opposed to plastic ones.

Robot PCR TWO robots are being readied to perform PCR tests in the Costa del Sol Hospital in Marbella with the new equipment set to allow up to 900 diagnoses per day as part of the Mi­ crobiology unit. Versant kPCR Molecu­ lar System and MagNa Pure 96 System, the two robots from Siemens Healthineers and Roche Diagnostic, respectively, are being readied and made available in the hospital to perform larger numbers of Covid­19 de­ tection testing. The Costa del Sol Hos­ pital has been busy study­ ing the SARS­Cov­2 virus since March 6, 2020, how­ ever, without this tech­ nology they have only av­ eraged 300­350 PCR tests per day.

Spanish politician, Sonia Vi­ vas has blamed ‘Jews’ for the ways that Palestinians are treated by “their government.” Podemos councillor, Sonia Vivas, has been quoted as say­ ing, “I haven’t spoken to all the Jews, but their government is elected and … constantly vio­

lates rights of Palestinians.” Vivas has said that she be­ lieves that Jews should be held accountable for the treatment of Palestinians as they are the members of the public who support a government “that constantly violates the funda­ mental rights of Palestinians.” Sonia Vivas is a member of the Podemos party and a city councillor in Palma, the capital of the eastern island of Mallor­ ca.

Open for Business BARS and restaurants in Magaluf’s notorious party strip were allowed to reopen last night after months of forced closure. Every bar and restaurant was closed earlier this summer after footage of tourists ignoring social distancing rules went viral around the globe. Most of the bars and businesses on Magaluf’s notorious Punta Ballena strip were allowed to open again on Saturday. The Balearic Government had ordered the ban on booze and clo­ sure of bars and restaurants in August when pictures and videos of party revellers ignoring social distancing laws flooded the internet. Although reopening is a welcome boost to the tourism industry on the island, it remains to be seen if any holidaymakers will return in the same numbers as before.

Severe Punishment BANGLADESH has autho­ rised the death penalty for rapists after a series of protests on the streets and social media. Under current law, capi­ tal punishment is only per­ mitted if the victim dies; the new law, approved by Bangladesh’s Cabinet on Monday, October 12, will see the punishment for rape move from life imprison­ ment to the death penalty. The news has been wel­ comed by many human rights activists in Bangladesh as a wave of violent assaults triggered protests recently. Ain­o­Salish Kendra, a women’s rights group, re­ ported that 889 rapes oc­ curred between January and August of this year, many of them gang rapes.

ENCROCHAT: A top-secret communications system. A RECENT ruling by the EU’s highest court found that UK, French and Belgian mass sur­ veillance regimes did not re­ spect privacy, opening the floodgates to sentence ap­ peals on hundreds of En­ crochat cases. In July this year, an interna­ tional crime sting operation rounded up several Scottish household names in a major crackdown on the EncroChat phone encryption network. Authorities managed to ac­ cess Encrochat, an encrypted platform used by 60,000 peo­ ple worldwide, the National Crime Agency has ‘successfully penetrated’ a top­secret com­ munications system used by criminals to trade drugs and guns, said a spokesman. This is just one example of how UK, French and Belgian mass surveillance regimes used modern high­tech software and equipment to infiltrate and crack high­class criminal net­ works. Now, however, all these

‘triumphs of justice’ will be put under the spotlight and it is feared many previous convic­ tions will now be overturned.

Back in Windsor, the Queen is expected to travel to Buckingham Palace for working visits.

Mandatory THE Dutch PM has issued an ulti­ matum to the public: ‘Wear a mask, or face lockdown’ as Hol­ land recorded 6,500 Covid cases in one 24­hour period over this last week. The country’s government had already warned it would be forced to impose tighter restric­ tions by the end of the weekend if infections did not start to drop. The PM said he was angry over the fact that citizens keep ‘dis­ obeying basic rules.’ Officials issued the stark ulti­ matum to 17­million Dutch citi­ zens yesterday after it became obvious that the vast majority had totally ignored face mask rules since the pandemic began.

The country became a global virus hotspot on Friday October 9 after its infection rate surged to 160 cases per 100,000 people, although Madrid’s rate is higher at 750 per 100,000 as per Satur­ day October 10.

Whopping catch TRAPPERS have caught a record­breaking 18­foot long Burmese python in Florida Everglades. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conserva­ tion Commission, Ryan Ausburn and Kevin Pavlidis captured the massive python on Friday, October 2. “That’s a new record! (they) caught the behemoth of a snake weighing a whopping 104 pounds. The re­ moval of this female snake is a triumph for our native wildlife and habitats and a great example of the part­ nership between our two programmes working to­ ward our goal of removing nonnative pythons.” FWC confirmed the record­breaking catch was a joint effort from the Python Action Team and the

Cultural Shift NEW restrictions in bars and restaurants are forcing Spaniards to change their dining habits, as establishments are limited to 50 per cent capacity indoors and 60 per cent outdoors. The new measures, introduced in Madrid and nine other cities in the region by the High Court last Friday also mean that bars and restaurants must close their doors at 11pm, accepting the last customers at 10pm. With late dining being a long­standing tradition in Spain, many residents are being forced to adapt their dining habits. In a bid to maintain their customer base, many establish­ ments are opening earlier, but within three days of the mea­ sures being introduced, hospitality group Hosteleria Madrid reported a loss of €8 million and 75,000 dinner reservations cancelled.

Drug Targets FRESHMAN University students are being tar­ geted by drug dealers across the UK just days after arriving on campus, it has been reported. The dealers are allegedly putting calling cards under doors in the halls of residence, asking the young students to contact them di­ rectly for ‘Brainblasters.’ The dealers refer to themselves as ‘Just your local friendly stoner.’ They are also targetting the freshers through Instagram and Snapchat within days of their arrival at University, offering a ‘cata­ logue’ of different drugs. The news has caused outrage following the tragic deaths of three university students in Newcastle.

Cancer Shock for Singer TOM PARKER, the 32­year­old singer of boyband The Wanted, has been left fighting for his life after being given the news that he has stage four glioblastoma, a terminal brain tumour. The father­of­one said, “I’m still in complete shock, it’s so much to take in.” The singer suffered a seizure in July, then six weeks later he had another more serious seizure and was rushed to hospital. Tom told his fans that he had already begun his chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment in a heart­breaking post on social media platform Instagram.

The 39 that were found dead, suffocated on their jour­ ney from Zeebrugge in Bel­ gium to Purfleet in Essex. The criminals disclosed they were under pressure to get more people into the country. The three men, Eamonn Harrison, Mr Kennedy and Valentin Calota all denied be­ ing part of a larger people smuggling activity. However, the fourth man, Gheorge Nica admitted to both the 39 counts of manslaughter and also larger people smuggling operations.

A SPECTACULAR new see­through bridge, suspended 175 metres above a river, is set to open in Por­ tugal in October with its designers claiming the experience of walking along it ‘mimics the feeling of walking through the air.’ Named 516 Arouca, because it’s length and is in Arouca, an hour south of Porto, takes about 10 minutes to cross ­ or longer for those with a fear of heights.

Vaccine Race THE White House has announced that a globally unprecedented deal has been struck for a coronavirus drug. In the statement the White House claims it has secured a $486 million deal for the drug and will see an initial free dose of anti­ body treatments to one million Americans in January. The agreement was signed on Friday October 9 between gov­ ernment officials and the drug development firm AstraZeneca plc. TWO decades ago, it was hard to see how the Iberian Lynx would survive with fewer than 100 of them thought to still be alive. However, thanks to conservation efforts, cap­ tive breeding and habitat management, their numbers are soaring. The beautiful creatures dominated the Iberian scrub­ land for millennia however had you tried to see one in the wild not that long ago you would have found it exception­ ally hard. In 2002, there were thought to be less than 100 left in the wild, with only a quarter of those thought to be breeding age females, accord­ ing to a report by the New York Times.

As a result of the species devastation, the LIFE+ Iberlince programme was founded with assistance from the European Union which has seen wild numbers in Spain and Portugal increase to an estimate of over 900. As captive breeding pro­ grammes became more suc­ cessful, the animals were start­ ed to be released into the wild. The programme has been so successful that the species has spread well beyond the origi­ nal 100 square miles release area and has progressed into established populations in the Spanish regions of Andalucia, Castilla­La Mancha and Ex­ tremadura, and across the bor­ der in southern Portugal.

Rally NHS Sued Tragedy SPANISH rally co­driver, Laura Salvo, has tragically died at the age of 21 in a horrific crash at Rally Vidreiro. Salva was co­driving for Miguel Socias in a fatal crash during the first stage of the Ral­ ly Vidreiro in Portugal. During the first stage of the Rally the car careered off the road and ramraided into anoth­ er vehicle. It took only two minutes for medics to appear on the scene where they desperately tried to resuscitate Salva, however, she was already dead at the scene.

AN NHS Trust has been mired in scandal after the death of a seven­day­old child which sees the suit become the first pros­ ecution of its kind. The Care Quality Commis­ sion (CQC) has ascertained that the seven­year­old, Harry Richford, and his mother, Sarah were the unwilling vic­ tims of ‘avoidable harm.’ The death, which occurred in November 2017, has been identified by an inquest to have been “wholly avoidable” and the trust under whose care the child was under now faces two counts of failing to provide safe care and safe treatment to the infant.

Payrise Fury UK MPs are set to receive yet another pay rise in 2021 of £3,300 as thousands of their constituents find themselves unemployed. This will see them receive a salary of £85,291. MP’s pay rises are proposed by the Independent Parliamen­ tary Standards Authority (IPSA) and the body has recommend­ ed that the country’s represen­ tatives receive a rise. Following a tragic fall which killed one of her friends, Georgia instigated a safety awareness campaign aimed at young British tourists visiting the Balearics. Alongside this, Georgia worked closely with the British Embassy in Madrid and Con­ sulate in Palma to become a key spokesperson for the FCO’s ‘Stick with your Mates’ cam­ paign, sharing her personal ex­ perience in a video that reached almost a million people on Face­ book. HMA Hugh Elliott said: “It is wonderful to see some­ one as young as Georgia being recognised for the work they do in the community. Channelling

her personal grief into helping to save the lives of others, she has managed to reach millions of young people through social media ­ communicating a mes­ sage of personal safety in a way that was both compelling and relatable. Her work has made a real difference.” Georgia Hague said: “I am ex­ tremely grateful and humbled to have been recognised for my ef­ forts in Mallorca. PLASTIC WASTE: Putting people off visiting.

BEAUTIFUL stretches of Britain’s beaches are be­ ing blighted by a sea of PPE that is devastating the coastline with waste. In a two­month period on one stretch of Cor­ nish beach alone, charity volunteers cleaned up over 650 used plastic gloves and over 250 surgical face masks. These areas are normally a bustling hub for surfing, swimming and crowds of visitors, howev­ er both locals and the visiting population is be­ coming more and more disenchanted with the area due to the ever­increasing waste on the tra­ ditionally sandy shores. It is estimated that the area as a whole has suf­ fered debris caused by the Covid­19 pandemic totalling thousands of items of discarded waste. This worrying new trend means that even in the future, when Covid is a distant memory, we may still end up suffering the ramifications on our environment for generations to come.

INSPIRATIONAL Cardiff pensioner, Dilys Price, has passed away at 88 after completing 1,139 solo parachute jumps all in the name of charity. Price started her skydiving career at the age of 54 and entered the Guinness Book of World Records in 2013 as the world’s oldest female solo parachute jumper. Price, with a background in dance, also founded a charity which provided vulnerable people and those with learning difficulties ac­ cess to free creative movement programmes which help their cognitive and motor functions. She was awarded an OBE in 2003 and the Pride of Britain awards in 2017.

Napa Valley Tragedy MORE than four million acres of vineyards in California’s Napa Valley have been torched by the ongoing California wild­ fires. It is estimated that 80 per cent of 2020’s wine stock in the famous wine producing area of the US will become unusable. The huge fires, which have continued to rage since the beginning of September 2020, have been classified as the worst on­ going wildfires in US history. To date, at least 18 vineyards in the elite wine producing region have been either damaged or fully destroyed with many producers having to write off their entire 2020 crop as they are rendered useless by either smoke, heat or fire damage.

Three Student Outbreak Arrests THREE men have been arrested in Sweden on suspicion of the mur­ der of Flamur Beqiri, who was fatally shot outside his home in Battersea on Christ­ mas Eve, 2019. The 36­year­old, who had a wife and young child, was the brother of former Real Housewives of Cheshire star Misse Beqiri. Three Swedish na­ tionals, aged 33, 31 and 22, were arrested on October 8, at ad­ dresses in Stockholm and Vaxjo, under a UK European Arrest War­ rant (EAW). They will now be subject to the extradi­ tion process through the Swedish judicial system.

NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY has seen more than 1,000 students test positive for coronavirus. That figure, together with the 770 positive tests among students at neighbouring Northumbria University, means over 5,000 students in the UK across 91 universities now have the virus. A crackdown has now be­ gun with 91 rule breakers in

Manchester already fined €56 (£50) and others threatened with €560 (£500) penalties. The city’s health chiefs have revealed that more than half of Manchester’s surging Covid cases are affecting those be­ tween the ages of 17 and 21. Peace Pedro’s plan prize THE World Food Programme of the United Nations has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize 2020. “It is not just providing food, this organisation helps create sustainable communities,” highlighted the jury. Assisting nearly 87 million people in 83 countries every year, the World Food Pro­ gramme is the leading hu­ manitarian organisation fighting hunger in the world, providing food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to im­ prove health and nutrition. Its efforts are directed at emergency assistance, relief and rehabilitation, develop­ ment assistance and special operations. Most of the work is carried out in coun­ tries affected by war, where people are three times more likely to suffer from malnu­ trition than those living in countries without conflict.

PEDRO SÁNCHEZ took to the stage in La Moncloa last week, to present a ‘Recovery, Transforma­ tion and Resilience Plan of the Spanish Economy’ which con­ tains his strategy to face the coronavirus crisis and the chal­ lenges of the next decade for the for the recovery of the economy. Based on four identifiers (eco­ logical transition, social and terri­ torial cohesion, digitisation and gender equality), the plan will

boost €25,000 million of Euro­ pean funds next year, contribut­ ing 2.7 points of growth to GDP in 2021 and an increase 2 per cent of potential growth in a decade. These European funds will al­ low the creation of 800,000 jobs in the next three years. A total of €72,000 million of European funds will be made available in the period 2021­2023 with the aim of accelerating the transfor­ mation of the economy.

Banned THREATENING debt letters that cause people to contemplate suicide have been banned following a successful campaign by Martin Lewis, founder of MoneySavingExpert.com and the Money and Mental Health Policy Institute (MMHPI). Lewis argued that language used in the 1974 Consumer Credit Act has caused people to think about taking their own life as a result of debt letters. New rules are expected to be introduced by the Treasury in December 2020 and will state that lenders have up to six months to make changes to their practices.

Stories of strength By Damon Mitchell EWN had the pleasure of speak­ ing exclusively to expat author Jacqueline Carpenter who after the success of her first novel ‘Louisa,’ is back to repeat that success with part two ‘Joan.’ Jacqueline lives in Los Alcazares on the Mar Menor after relocat­ ing from Essex three years ago. The books are part of a trilogy which begins in 1937 when the Second World War is looming.

The protagonist in the first nov­ el is Louisa a 15­year­old girl grow­ ing up in London with a life full of emotion, love, strength, happi­ ness and sorrow. In the second book ‘Joan,’ Louisa, is now a pretty war wid­ ow, it is the 1950s and she is re­ married and living with her new husband in a beautiful farming vil­ lage in Kent. Jacqueline explained he reason for taking up writing, “My nan

used to tell me stories about the war. Inspired by her tales I felt I had to write some of these down so that my grandchildren could also read these stories.” She continued, “ I wanted to motivate young girls by reminding them how strong and indepen­ dent women were in those days.” ‘Joan’ was released on October 2 and along with ‘Louisa’ is avail­ able on Amazon.

A RECENT investigation has revealed that a mil­ lionaire takeaway pizza chain tycoon is suspect­ ed of stealing more than €280,000 of taxpay­ ers’ cash by claiming fake Eat Out to Help Out meals. Raheel Choudhary, who owns 61 Papa John’s franchise restaurants is the US giant’s largest UK franchisee, allegedly instructed staff to record thousands of ‘phantom covers’ while the government scheme was running. Because these non­existent meals were classed as ‘Eat Out to Help Out,’ the UK taxpay­ er footed half the bill. However, most of his restaurants were not even eligible for the offer because they were collection and delivery only.

AROUND 20,000 chicks have been abandoned at a Madrid airport, prompting an appeal from a Spanish animal welfare group for help to save them. The little chicks were found in boxes at Adolfo Suarez Madrid­Barajas Airport, waiting to be shipped, but the planned shipment to Africa was refused. The boxes remained at the airport for three days, and sadly many died having been left in the hangar. They are appealing for donations of heat lamps, cardboard and flat drinking troughs, so that the chicks can be kept warm, have access to water and food. SINCE the story of Car­ lota, the girl from Vélez­ Malaga, Axarquia whose limbs could be amputat­ ed after suffering sepsis, became public, many have turned to help the family to meet the costs of the operation. The Asociación de Mu­ jeres ‘La Yedra’ and the Almáchar Town Hall dis­ tributed piggy banks in lo­ cal shops to raise money for the treatment and help in her recovery. In total, they have raised €1,505.53 “thanks to the help of everyone.”

Tracey has a gift of remote vision and can see things through other people’s eyes. During a phone call, she asked where I was going because she could see a rucksack, I was sat in front of a backpack, packing it with my camera and note­ book to go to do another interview. This lovely lady is so down to earth and overflowing with a bubbly personality just talking to her cheers you up. It’s not always easy though, Tracey told me how after a tragic acci­ dent in America a client called her, and using her remote vi­ sion she helped her find her daughter who unfortunately had passed away. Tracey’s vision was so detailed she could de­ scribe the long grass, the wooden slatted walkway, and the rope that had tangled around the young girl’s ankles trapping her. Tracey keeps a diary of her visions and back in October 2019 she wrote “Country in threat, from an animal that causes breathing problems, people believe it’s bats, that many birds will die, it will spread via food or touch, it causes fibres in the chest and lungs.” There are then other notes for her to do some research on bird flu because it is important and few oth­ er comments, but it’s hard not to have faith in her gift when you see these things and speak with her.

M G (Costa del Sol) Yes, it is true. In YOU AND THE LAW buildings put up IN SPAIN before 2006 there was very little le­ gal requirement in national law regarding fire safety. Even if your own municipality has some stricter regulations in place, but no building inspector has called on you to enforce them, you are not legally obligated. More modern buildings are designed for hallways and staircases to block direct airflow that feeds fires, but even they are not required to have alarm sys­ tems or fire escapes. If you wish to discuss this at the AGM, you might want to consider individual smoke alarms in each flat which is a solution favoured by many large buildings.

ALTHOUGH it was initially be­ lieved that criminals might em­ bezzle up to £1.9 billion (€2.1 billion) from the Government Bounce Back Scheme, the UK National Audit Office (NAO) has announced that it esti­ mates that the scale of loss could be as much as £26 billion (€28.6 billion). That is an incredible 60 per cent of the amount loaned and the main banks involved, Bar­ clays, HSBC, Lloyds, NatWest and Santander, which provided more than £30 bn (€33 bn) in funding will be protected and should between them earn more than £1 bn (€1.1 bn) in government paid interest. To summarise, the Bounce Back Loan Scheme provides registered and unregistered businesses with loans of up to

£50,000 (€55,000) or a maxi­ mum of 25 per cent of annual turnover, to maintain their fi­ nancial health during the pan­ demic. According to the NAO, once the government decided to support small businesses facing cash flow problems owing to the pandemic, it moved very quickly to set up a scheme. It prioritised one aspect of value for money ­ payment speed ­ over almost all others and has been prepared to tol­ erate a potentially very high level of losses as a result. The problem is that because of the speed in which it set up and the 1.2 million cases ap­ proved in record time, it didn’t really know who was legiti­ mate and who would be able to pay back loans received.

Social Security cost APPEARING before a Parlia­ mentary Committee, Minister of Inclusion and Social Security, José Luis Escrivá has confirmed that social security payments to Spanish residents impacted by Covid­19 amount to almost €13 billion up to the end of September. The largest expense has been on ERTE (furlough) at €5.218 billion, followed by sup­ port for the self­employed at €4.138 billion with €2.2 billion lost by the exemption granted from paying social security with a further €1.369 billion spent on those with temporary ill­ nesses or holiday. Overall, when taking into ac­ count loss of tax revenue the government is €22 billion out of pocket.

Free beverages RESTAURANT chains and fran­ chises have suffered badly with the Covid­19 restrictions and the Restalia Group, which has brands such as 100 Mon­ taditos and La Sureña, has launched an unusual plan to help all of its franchisees af­ fected by restrictive measures. For those located in the most restricted areas, the group will supply one month of free beverages, either beer or soft drinks for the month of October based on average consumption. In addition, it will run ad­ verts encouraging visitors to the outlets even though num­ bers seated are low.

Carry on Regardless CINEWORLD CLOSURES: Not a scene from Carry on Cowboy. THE news that the release of the new James Bond film No Time to Die - almost certainly Daniel C r a i g ’s l a s t a p p e a r ance as 007 – has been postponed again, this time from November until April 2021 may well have spelled the end for Cineworld which employs 45,000 in the UK and USA. There seems to be a complete dearth of blockbuster movies be­ ing released, in many cases be­ cause so many were postponed due to coronavirus, but without decent films to draw people into the cinema and the additional cost of reducing audiences and keeping them safe is simply caus­ ing problems all round. The fact that TV generally is

relying on repeats or old episodes of programmes filmed before the lockdown, coupled with the success of the espi­ onage film Tenet which was re­ leased in August suggests that there is an audience anxious to enjoy a night at the movies. The major distributors howev­ er want to ensure that they re­ ceive the maximum income from theatrical releases, espe­ cially in America, before letting them out for TV and then DVD screening, so there is very little new quality product available to view. In the UK, Cineworld employs 5,500 staff in 127 venues and it says that the closures are tempo­ rary and it is monitoring the situ­ ation so that once it has more in­ formation about planned releases it will in turn be able to consider when to reopen.

Natural Gas ORIGINALLY planned for April but postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchéz made his first trip to Algeria where he met with its President Abdelmadjid Tebounne in Algiers. Apart from discussions about migration and dealing with the pandemic, the Prime Minister was on a mission to try to find a way to reduce the price of natural gas supplied by Algeria to Spain. After dominating the market for 30 years, Algeria has seen an upsurge in Spanish imports from the USA and the Middle East.

In the meantime, Prime Min­ ister Boris Johnson has encour­ aged people to go to the cine­ ma and enjoy the movies that are on offer, although that may be difficult with the Cineworld closures.

ONE of the main barriers in fighting Covid is lack of knowledge, there­ fore, doctors use what we know about the flu to identify a possibly in­ fected person. Flu symptoms include fever, headache and a dry cough, however these can also appear with Covid. However, coronavirus pre­ sents some symptoms of its own, such as loss of smell, taste and difficulty in breathing. Although we do not yet have a vaccine against SARS­CoV­2, what we do have is one against the flu. Keeping this disease at bay can be a key fac­ tor in not putting more pressure on the health system.

Our leaders may be making errors of judgement, some of their rules and regulations may appear to be over the top and ‘unfair,’ some of the ‘numbers’ may be incorrect, but they are doing their darndest to control and eliminate an unprecedented virus that is running riot and killing the population. To achieve success, they are acting on

the advice of the highest and most expert medical authorities in the land. What suddenly made all those social media posters experts in pandemics and how to deal with them? The minute we began to ease off and allow all the diddums’ to go for drinkie poos and ‘let their hair down’ the numbers began to rise again. It’s not a fallacy; the infection rate is now increasing at an alarming rate. The front line workers of the NHS are once again under extreme pressure to control and deal with the extra influx of patients. For those who insist it’s nothing more than a touch of the flu, new figures out today show that between January and August three times the amount of people died from the Coronavirus than died from Pneumonia and Influenza combined! The areas that are now finding themselves under the strict restrictions has nothing to do with north and south divides, it’s to do with numbers of people not complying with the rules and regulations they were asked to observe. The sooner people stop crying in their milk and voluntarily knuckle down and follow the rules, the quicker we will see the end of this nightmare. Why should

those who do comply be suffering because selfish numbers of the population decide they are being ‘hard done by’ and know better than the experts? We are all suffering in one way or another. No one is getting any preferential treatment. If the selfcentered minority would observe the rules, keep their toys in their prams and see a bit of sense, the government wouldn’t need to make and enforce new laws, which have to be implemented by extra police patrols and subsequent arrests. Make no mistake. Everyone wants this over. Even if you halve the published numbers you have to be totally moronic to deny the world is in the grip of a virus that, if not contained or eliminated, will continue to kill and incapacitate our citizens for well into the foreseeable future. Just a few conspiracy theories MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man UK cinemas are closing ­ another sign of the economic catastrophe happening worldwide. The reason is that yet another studio has pulled another potential block­ buster, to be shown next year, instead of this year. So far the new James Bond and Mission Impossible are two of the the 30ish that have been put back. This is a disaster in so many ways. The spiral effect is going to be no cinemas, which means nowhere to show movies. This means no revenue to make the movies which plays right into the hands of Netflix, Prime and Apple. See the connec­ tion? They are all online companies and will now be in control. Of course the talent that appears in these movies will also be affected. At the moment movies aren’t even being made because of Covid. Maybe the conspiracy theorists aren’t too far off saying it’s all a plot. Talking about conspiracy theories, there are a serious amount about regarding Covid. Here’s a few to choose from ­ 5G ­ not sure how a virus travels via a mobile network. Bill Gates ­ this is a Q Anon one.

You really need to check this scary mob out. It escaped from a Chinese lab ­ slightly more plausible than some of the others. It was developed as a biological weapon in China. When China heard this they came back with their own theory that it was the USA that imported it into China. This one’s a biggy from the likes of David Icke and Alex Jones ­ two absolute nutters as far as I’m concerned: Covid­19 doesn’t actually exist, but is a plot by the globalist elite to take away our freedom. Early weaker versions of this theory were prevalent on the political right in the notion the novel coronavirus would be ‘no worse than flu’ and later versions are now influencing anti­lockdown protests across several states in the US. Because believers increasingly refuse to observe social dis­ tancing measures, they could directly help to spread the epidemic in their localities and increase the resulting death rate. This is their theory not mine. The point I’m making is nobody actually knows what’s going on but whatever it is it’s grinding the world to a halt and I’m fed up with it all. He was a local oink known to the CID and had been fitted up by one officer on his way home from work. They found minute traces in his trouser pockets, but that was enough to convict him. SUNDAY is closing time in Spain. It is traditionally a day of relaxation, reflection, worship and family. For most shops this means that they are closed and therefore the public need to ensure that any shopping should be carried out on Saturday. Sunday shopping has always been a debate subject in many parts of the world. Many people who agree that shops should be able to choose whether to open on a Sunday argue that the idea of remaining closed no longer fits with the 24/7 global economy of the 21st century. There is also the argument that Sunday is one of the few days when people are fully available to enjoy leisurely shopping due to working through the week. However, there are just as many opponents of the full opening of retail environments on a Sunday. Many see it as a dangerous symbol of commercialism that is taking over the human condition and the full and unbridled opening of shops at all times would see a loss of valuable time and, potentially, see increases in working hours and the destruction of much needed down time. There are also objections on the ground of religion. Particularly in countries like Spain which still have a highly religious community. So, with so many arguments for and against Sunday opening, it is clear that there is no specific consensus on the way forward. We believe that Sunday shopping should be allowed and that it is more in keeping with our modern society, however, you may disagree … and that is okay too.

I got three months and a £100 fine. The two weeks and £200 I could have lived with, but three months! Absolutely ridiculous compared with the rest of the sentences I heard being handed down that day, at the end of the day the only thing I can say is that there is no such thing as British justice, unless you are supposedly under privileged or on legal aid. Half of women were on a diet in last year

M O R E than half of all women have tried to lose weight over the past year. Research by retail analysts Mintel found that 57 per cent of women admitted to dieting, compared to 39 per cent of men. The survey found one in three women are unaware of how many calories they eat. A third said they ate more than the recommended 2,000 a day. However, denying yourself food may not be the best thing to try and lose weight. Scientists at Loughborough University (UK) found that women who created an ‘energy deficit’ through calorie restriction, rather than working out, ate around 40 per cent more at a buffet dinner. The team discovered levels of the ‘hunger hormone’ increase in women who deny themselves food. The study looked at 12 women who restricted their diets by around 836 calories before a buffet dinner. On another occasion, they burnt the same energy on a treadmill before having the buffet. Researchers found that when they were dieting, the women ate an average of 944 calories, compared with only 660 after exercise. These findings contradict previous studies suggesting that exercise makes people more hungry.

Life as a Bipolar Mama MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED THE ups and downs of parenthood alone is enough to make anyone feel ‘barmy’ let alone juggling parenthood and a mental illness and all that comes with it. My to-do list is never ending: school run, go to work, make sure I remember to send my daughter in with an extra pair of socks for her gymnastics after school activity (I forgot to this week major mum guilt), food shop, deal with the dog and the cat, a bit of light dusting and sweep up the clumps of dog hair that seem to form no matter how many times I sweep, get dinner on, help with homework, make sure school bag is packed for the next day, shower-time and bedtime. That sums up pretty much every regular Mama’s day, now throw into the mix : a panic attack because I’m three minutes late leaving the house even though I have allowed for this to go horribly wrong because I always plan for worse case scenario, yet I can’t control the overwhelming feeling and I’m now trying to hold back the tears until I at least drop my daughter at school just so she doesn’t see. Go to work - it’s been a great day, had a sale and met some lovely people, I’m happy, birds are chirping and skipping on my way home. Get home and the big black cloud comes over

me, I had planned on cooking a tasty lasagne but I’m too tired and just want the day to be over, I can’t cope with anything else today. I just want it to be dark enough to be able to go to bed, I get into bed and all of a sudden, I’m in floods of tears and I don’t know why. Crazy right!? But it was a good day, wasn’t it?! And this is the thing, I have no control over these feelings and thoughts. Being a bipolar single mama has its challenges like any parent I lose the plot sometimes. I do find it easier now to hold my hands up and admit when I need help. When I am a bit stressed, and thankfully my wobbles are small these days on the whole, I have a great support network, and so does my daughter. I am so thankful for the amazing relationship with my daughter and the older she gets, the more she understands and the easier I am finding it to explain everything to her. Mama doesn’t want to cry but sometimes she has to, to let it all out and start again. Some days we can go to the park and eat ice cream, some days Mama needs to simply go home, sit there and breathe. Scientists have warned that this increases the risks of cancer and other illnesses later in life. Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, (USA) focused their study on teenage girls. For three days, the study’s 100 teenage participants stopped using their regular cosmetics and were provided with others labelled free of chemicals, including phthalates, parabens, triclosan and oxybenzone; all chemicals thought to affect changes of hormone levels within young women. After three days without their regular health and beauty products, dangerous chemical levels dropped by 45 per cent.

The orphanage cares for and houses 80 orphans, of all na-

San Jose Obrero also provides sheltered accommodation for young people, helping them

While clas­ sic Alfas probably still deserve their reputation for being tem­ peramental, newer models have long left that reputation behind. The trouble is reputations can take a long time to disap­ pear and that’s a shame be­ cause it prevents many people from enjoying some cracking cars, and they don’t come any­ more cracking than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio. The ‘standard’ Stelvio range is by no means backward in accelerating forward, with even the least athletic engine producing 190hp and the most powerful 280hp. It is the 510hp Quadrifoglio that is the real star though, it’s like an au­ tomotive Summanus. This is an SUV very definitely de­ signed with performance, rather than off­roading in

but show it a more open road and its inner darkness is re­ vealed. Reaching 62 mph in 3.8 sec­ onds is good in anyone’s book, but when you’re talking about a large SUV it is particularly impressive. The Quadrifoglio is light thanks to the use of alu­ minium and carbon fibre, but its performance all round, not just speed, from the way it puts power down, handling and steering is superbly ac­ complished. You can add a more stop­ ping power too, with optional carbon fibre brakes at €6,506 (£5,900). No that’s not a mis­ print! This is a well­honed, well­ crafted and hugely entertain­ ing car. It manages to combine so many positive attributes and is a delight to drive. I sus­ pect many premium badge drivers will stay loyal to their usual fare, but the few that don’t will not be disappointed.

Fortuner Upgrade Complete redesign

TOYOTA appears to be ploughing ahead with its high­performance GR version of the Fortuner SUV which appears to deliver the same high­output V6 powerplant turb­diesel. The highly anticipated Land Cruiser 300 series is to be slated for 2021 among high anticipation. Toyota are currently refining the finishing touches to the vehicle which will see its upgrades make its

way into a wider range of vehicles in the future. Specifically, the new V6 turbo­diesel engine is set to replace the current 200kW oil­burning V8. When asked if the Toyota Fortuner could be fitted with the Gazoo racing badges, a spokesperson from Toyota said, “We wouldn’t rule anything out. “We’re not excluding GR sub­branding from any core model.”

POPEMOBILE: Squeaky clean and green.

HIS Holiness, Pope Francis, has taken delivery of a brand new car, and it’s squeaky clean and green. Toyota has converted a hy­ drogen­powered Mirai saloon into a Popemobile, having been commissioned by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Japan as a gift. The modified £66,000 Mirai is said to fulfill Pope Francis’ deep interest in global environ­ mental matters and will allow him to undertake public ap­

pearances with a range of 310 miles from a tank of hydrogen and emits only water from its exhaust. As is required for all Popemo­ biles, the converted Mirai fea­ tures a completely redesigned rear, with a traditional elevated seat and viewing platform, wrapped by a safety cage so the Pope can greet large crowds while on the move. Steps have been fitted to the rear door sills to allow for easy access into the podium.

There is protective glass on either side of the seat with the gilded Vatican crests etched in­ to them. A conventional Toyota Mirai uses the combination of a 153bhp electric motor powered by a hydrogen­electric genera­ tor, with the gas stored in two tanks. It can accelerate to 62mph in 9.6 seconds and has a top speed of 111mph ­ though it will mostly be driven at a far more civilised pace.

LA MARINA Bowls Club welcomed the return of their internal 1,2,3, league, which is now known as the Barclays Inter­ nal Winter League, thanks to the bank’s generous sponsorship and support for the club. For those who are unsure of what 1,2,3 means: it is six ends of trips, six ends of pairs, six ends of singles, with each discipline being worth two points and two points for the total, giving a maximum of eight points to be won. The game has proved a huge success for the club, attracting new interest of both players and supporters. The first game saw the Kolas and Pandas (all teams have animal names) shoot to the top of the league with maxi­ mum points.
