BENIDORM is adding sport to its sun, sand and sea offer. Seeking new ways of holiday­ ing and attracting tourists in a near future with inevitable coronavirus restrictions, the town hall is taking advantage of its privileged surroundings. This entails constructing jog­ ging circuits and bike lanes in the Sierra Helada area and leafy El Moralet which lies behind the high­rise hotels and apartment blocks. Benidorm’s sportspeople are cooperating on the project with support from the Consejo Veci­ nal residents’ council, Sports councillor Marilo Cebreros an­ nounced. The 360­degree surveillance cameras are now installed at the Calle Sierra Helada, Avenida Olav V de Noruega and Calle Bach inter­ sections. DENIA’S Health Department (DSD) launched its 2020­2021 Flu Vaccination Campaign at Pedreguer’s health centre. Luis Carretero, the DSD manager, announced that the Marina Alta will receive 41,600 doses of the vaccine,

10,000 more than last year. The groups of those consid­ ered most at risk have been extended to cover the over­ 65s, persons with chronic medical conditions, women up to the sixth month of preg­ nancy and babies of between

six months and two years who were born prematurely. Essential public services employees will also get jabs first, together with employ­ ees and residents of care homes, health professionals, and pharmacy employees.

The town hall is also launching an app for downloading the routes and following them via GPS, the councillor added. The Sports department was excited to be joining the project, said Cebreros, who pointed out that it would be impossible to achieve without the clubs’ participation. “We want to offer the opportunity of practising sport and enjoying nature because Benidorm is more than sun and beach,” the councillor said. “We have so many other options.”

Sporting chance FOR the second year running Benidorm Town Hall is providing financial aid to promote sport for local girls and women, with an allocation of €100,000 compared with €90,000 in 2019. The cash will go to registered clubs and sporting organisations that have women members or teams operating for a least a year.

Boat people FOUR boats carrying migrants were intercepted off Calpe, Altea and Benidorm in the early hours of Friday October 9. The 34 passengers, who claimed they were Algerians, Syrians and Palestinians, were taken to Alicante where they were quarantined following medical check-ups and testing for Covid-19.

False front THE Guardia Civil arrested a Spanish man and two Bulgarians after discovering their marihuana factory in the abandoned Valle del Sol hotel in Muchamiel. The entire front of the building that was visible from the road was camouflaged with a huge but phoney hoarding announcing the future opening of a care home for the elderly.

Catching up VILLAJOYOSA Hospital, which covers the Marina Baja area, has recommenced operations that had to be postponed when the centre was saturated owing to the coronavirus pandemic. Operations are also to be scheduled for the afternoon to catch up with what the hospital management admitted was an ‘enormous’ backlog.

Even then, stalls at the Foietes site were ­ and are ­ limited to fruit, vegetables and foodstuffs without the shoes and clothes that made Benidorm’s Wednes­ day mercadillo so popular. Ten traders, representing the barred 180 stallholders, staged a peaceful protest at the market entrance this week. “We can’t understand what the problem is, especially as every market in the province sells shoes and clothes,” Brian Li­ don and Pedro Luis Valero told the Spanish media. Benidorm was the sole source of income for some stallholders while others, like Pedro, attend­ ed other markets although he admitted Benidorm was the most profitable. “Most of us are having a very hard time. Despite issuing strict guidelines on the way that town halls may use their Budget surplus, the central government allows them to spend 7 per cent on acquiring environmentally­friend­ ly vehicles.

THE number of people who visited Altea without spending the night there increased by 70 per cent in August. According to market research company Kido Dinamics, a survey for the professional tourism sector website Hosteltur revealed that Altea had 239,539 non­staying visitors in Au­ gust, compared with 141,104 in 2019. Altea’s increase was proportionally greater than any other Spanish municipality’s, revealed Tourism councillor Xelo Gon­ zalez. “Kido Dinamics accessed this information via mobile tele­ phone masts,” Gonzalez explained. “We knew what countries they came from, where they spent the night, the streets they walked along, the places they visited and how long they were here,” she added. “All of this information gave a more precise picture regard­ ing what was going in our area,” Gonzalez said, while stress­ ing that data obtained from the phone masts was anony­ mous. Users’ personal details, telephone numbers and addresses were not accessed, she explained, as their activities were tracked only at network level. “Bearing in mind the situation produced by the pandemic, this singles out Altea as a safe destination whose qualities are attracting a growing number of people,” the councillor said.

Mayor’s flexible approach MIREIA ESTEPA, mayor of inland Cocentaina, will take responsibility for allowing three local pubs to reopen. She made the decision after she and the regional government failed to agree over allowing the pubs to operate as cafeterias, Es­ tepa said. The mayor revealed that the pubs would sign a Declaration of Re­ sponsibility and their licences could be temporarily interpreted as corresponding to cafes. Estepa nevertheless warned that if Cocentain’s Local Police saw “one single infringement,” the pub in question would be immedi­ ately closed down.

Failing to obtain a response from the public, the organisation spent €300 on supplies for the Brothers and the infirm, elderly and vulnerable men in their care. They brought two whole cheeses,

Denia’s past DENIA’S Baix la Mar dis­ trict temporarily re­ turned to the 1980s for the film, El Sustituto. Directed by Oscar Aibar and starring Ricar­ do Gomez, the thriller centres on Nazis who fled from the Allies at the end of the Second World War. The plot of El Sustito centres on a police offi­ cer from a tough Madrid area, played by Ricardo Gomez, who ac­ cepts a transfer to De­ nia. He had hoped for a quiet life and an im­ provement in his daugh­ ter’s health but investi­ gating his predecessor’s death leads him to a group of elderly Nazis ending their days on the Costa Blanca. “Some years ago, I noticed a photo on the wall of a Costa restau­ rant,” Aibar told an Ali­ cante Plaza interviewer, explaining the back­ ground to his latest film. “It showed men dressed in Nazi uni­ forms from the Second World War, sitting hap­ pily round a table,” Aibar said. “The image was taken in the same place, no more than 20 years pre­ viously.” Aibar went on to ex­ plain that his own en­ quiries revealed “hun­ dreds” of details about Nazis living on the Costa Blanca well into the years of the post­Franco Transition. “That is the incredible story behind El Substi­ tuto,” Aibar told Ali­ cante Plaza.

School Under Scrutiny THE British International School of Marbella on the Cos­ ta del Sol has come under scrutiny for failing to impose mask rules after it was re­ vealed several complaints had been made against the centre

for not enforcing government safety measures. The complaints were made after the school failed to fol­ low mandatary mask regula­ tions insisting that there was “a little misunderstanding”

of the rules. The school, which costs around €1,200 a month, had not been complying with the mandatory rules that state: “People aged six and over are required to use the mask on

public roads, in outdoor spaces and any closed space for public use or open to the public.” The school continued to ne­ glect the rules despite having the information since July.

A BOLETIN OFICIAL DEL ES­ TADO (BOE) released from the Spanish government on September 19, 2020, presents a new change in the law that would see vi­ tally important human rights and freedoms stripped. The BOE specifies new powers that affect the fundamental rights of Spanish citizens and resi­ dents by allowing the im­ plementation of a law that would see the houses and private residences of the public able to be accessed on the demand of the health authorities via an administrative court. Health inspectors would give a very small three­ day notice period to allow the occupants to appeal. Under the umbrella of the continuing Coron­ avirus pandemic, the law would allow health au­ thorities to violate the pri­

FURTHER HELP THE UK Treasury has an­ nounced that it will pay two­thirds of the pay packets of locked down workers up to a month­ ly value of £2,100 in a varied continuation of the furlough scheme that has been helping support businesses and workers throughout the coronavirus pandemic. Furthermore, the gov­ ernment will offer aid to businesses in the form of £3,000 grants if they are required to close due to local lock­ d o w n s a n d t h e b u s i­ n e s s e s w i l l n o t b e r e­ quired to contribute to the payments. The chancellor Rishi Sunak said: “I have al­ ways said that we will do whatever is neces­ sary to protect jobs and livelihoods as the situa­ tion evolves.”

Campaign THE UK government has criticised a ‘crass’ ad­ vertising campaign encouraging a ballet dancer to ‘reboot’ their career and move into IT. The advert features a female dancer tying up her ballet pumps alongside the caption: ‘’Fati­ ma’s next job could be in cyber. (She just does­ n’t know it yet).’ It adds the slogan: ‘Rethink. Reskill. Reboot.’ In a tweet, culture secretary Oliver Dowden expressed regret about the advert and said the campaign was not “something from @DCMS” (UK Government Department for Digital, Cul­ ture, Media and Sport) and agreed it was ‘crass.’

NEARLY a third of all coronavirus in­ fections are linked to pubs and restaurants, according to a govern­ ment minister. Business minister Nadhim Zahawi said England’s Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty had presented the evi­ dence to MPs. Zahawi said: “Between restaurants, bars and cafes about 30 per cent of the infections are coming through that hospitality, social inter­ actions if I can describe it as such.” Zahawi added: “And it is only right that we take action with the local leadership, with public health local teams, because they know their area best.” This revelation comes as Central Scotland’s pubs and restaurants were forced to close on Friday October 9 in a bid to curb the recent spike in cas­ es.

CORONAVIRUS can survive at least 28 days on surfaces, according to a new study. Researchers at CSIRO, Australia’s national sci­ ence agency have found that SARS­CoV­2, the virus responsible for Covid­19, can survive for up to 28 days on common surfaces including ban­ knotes, glass ­ such as that found on mobile

phone screens ­ and stainless steel. The study found that the virus survived longer at lower temperatures and tended to survive longer on non­porous or smooth surfaces such as glass, stainless steel and vinyl, compared to porous complex surfaces such as cotton, as well as paper banknotes as opposed to plastic ones.

Robot PCR TWO robots are being readied to perform PCR tests in the Costa del Sol Hospital in Marbella with the new equipment set to allow up to 900 diagnoses per day as part of the Mi­ crobiology unit. Versant kPCR Molecu­ lar System and MagNa Pure 96 System, the two robots from Siemens Healthineers and Roche Diagnostic, respectively, are being readied and made available in the hospital to perform larger numbers of Covid­19 de­ tection testing. The Costa del Sol Hos­ pital has been busy study­ ing the SARS­Cov­2 virus since March 6, 2020, how­ ever, without this tech­ nology they have only av­ eraged 300­350 PCR tests per day.

Open for Business BARS and restaurants in Magaluf’s notorious party strip were allowed to reopen last night after months of forced closure. Every bar and restaurant was closed earlier this summer after footage of tourists ignoring social distancing rules went viral around the globe. Most of the bars and businesses on Magaluf’s notorious Punta Ballena strip were allowed to open again on Saturday. The Balearic Government had ordered the ban on booze and clo­ sure of bars and restaurants in August when pictures and videos of party revellers ignoring social distancing laws flooded the internet. Although reopening is a welcome boost to the tourism industry on the island, it remains to be seen if any holidaymakers will return in the same numbers as before.

Severe Punishment BANGLADESH has autho­ rised the death penalty for rapists after a series of protests on the streets and social media. Under current law, capi­ tal punishment is only per­ mitted if the victim dies; the new law, approved by Bangladesh’s Cabinet on Monday, October 12, will see the punishment for rape move from life imprison­ ment to the death penalty. The news has been wel­ comed by many human rights activists in Bangladesh as a wave of violent assaults triggered protests recently. Ain­o­Salish Kendra, a women’s rights group, re­ ported that 889 rapes oc­ curred between January and August of this year, many of them gang rapes.

Royal Tedium IT seems it’s not just us who strug­ gled with boredom during the lockdown, the Queen and Prince Philip found their summer break in Balmoral ‘a bit tedious’ this year, with social distancing rules due to coronavirus making it less enjoyable, claims a royal expert. The 94­year­old monarch and the Duke of Edinburgh, 99, spent six weeks at their Aberdeenshire home, before moving to Sandring­ ham. Despite receiving visits from Princess Anne, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and the Wessexes, it ‘simply wasn’t as en­ joyable as usual’ because of the Covid­19 restrictions in place. Back in Windsor, the Queen is expected to travel to Buckingham Palace for working visits.

Encrochat A RECENT ruling by the EU’s highest court found that UK, French and Belgian mass surveillance regimes did not respect privacy, opening the floodgates to sentence ap­ peals on hundreds of En­ crochat cases. In July this year, an inter­ national crime sting opera­ tion rounded up several Scottish household names in a major crackdown on the EncroChat phone en­ cryption network. Authorities managed to access Encrochat, an en­ crypted platform used by 60,000 people worldwide,

the National Crime Agency has ‘successfully penetrat­ ed’ a top­secret communi­ cations system used by criminals to trade drugs and guns, said a spokesman. This is just one example of how UK, French and Bel­ gian mass surveillance regimes used modern high­ tech software and equip­ ment to infiltrate and crack high­class criminal net­ works. Now, however, all these ‘triumphs of justice’ will be put under the spot­ light and it is feared many previous convictions will now be overturned.

Warren, who has brought the Red Arrows to Menorca four times, has been awarded a British Empire medal (BEM) for services to the British Communi­ ty in Menorca, in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, published on Friday October 9, 2020. Following a tragic fall which killed one of her friends, Georgia instigated a safety awareness campaign aimed at young British tourists visiting the Balearics. Alongside this, Georgia worked closely with the British Embassy in Madrid and Con­ sulate in Palma to become a key spokesperson for the FCO’s ‘Stick with your Mates’ cam­ paign, sharing her personal ex­ perience in a video that reached almost a million people on Face­ book. HMA Hugh Elliott said: “It is wonderful to see some­ one as young as Georgia being recognised for the work they do in the community. Channelling

her personal grief into helping to save the lives of others, she has managed to reach millions of young people through social media ­ communicating a mes­ sage of personal safety in a way that was both compelling and relatable. Her work has made a real difference.” Georgia Hague said: “I am ex­ tremely grateful and humbled to have been recognised for my ef­ forts in Mallorca. If the cam­ paign helped to save just one life, then that means the world to me. Thank you for the posi­ tive recognition, I am grateful beyond words!” Ian moved to Menorca in 1988 to set up a car hire busi­ ness with his family. In the statement the White House claims it has secured a $486 million deal for the drug and will see an initial free dose of antibody treatments to one mil­ lion Americans in January. Wesley Barnes posted several unflattering com­ ments about a recent vis­ it to the Sea View Resort, allegedly accusing them of "modern day slavery". The resort owner filed a complaint and Barnes was arrested by immigration police and charged under Thailand's strict anti­ defamation laws. If found guilty, Mr Barnes faced up to two years in prison together with a maximum fine of 200,000 baht (€5,440). A BRITISH woman stands accused of trying to leave the UK and flying to Dubai with a total cash sum of nearly £2m hidden across five suitcases. The UK Border Force at Heathrow airport de­ tained Tara Hanlon, 30, when they discovered the money rolled up in batches in her luggage. This is officially the largest single money bust at the airport to date this year.

€100,000 Fine AN establishment in Guardamar del Segura has been fined €100,000 for re­ peated offences including sales of alcohol to under­age customers. The latest complaint against an establishment was considered to be seri­ ous enough to warrant the huge fine, although the busi­ ness has repeatedly broken the law. The large fine is believed to be because the establish­ ment failed to follow new Covid­19 rules restricting the sale of alcohol after 10pm. The business has previ­ ously paid fines totalling €15,000 over the last three years for repeated offences due to sales of alcohol to un­ der­age customers.

SPANISH rally co­driver, Laura Salvo, has tragically died at the age of 21 in a horrific crash at Rally Vidreiro. Salva was co­driving for Miguel Socias in a fatal crash during the first stage of the Ral­ ly Vidreiro in Portugal. It took only two minutes for medics to appear on the scene where they desperately tried to resuscitate Salva, however, she was already dead at the scene.

AN NHS Trust has been mired in scandal after the death of a seven­day­old child which sees the suit become the first pros­ ecution of its kind. The Care Quality Commis­ sion (CQC) has ascertained that the seven­year­old, Harry Richford, and his mother, Sarah were the unwilling vic­ tims of ‘avoidable harm.’ The death, which occurred in November 2017, has been identified by an inquest to have been “wholly avoidable” and the trust under whose care the child was under now faces two counts of failing to provide safe care and safe treatment to the infant.

Sale of a property by a minor in Spain CARLOS BAOS WE CAN HELP YOU

MINORS do not have the capacity to sell real es­ tate, and their legal representatives, (usu­ ally their parents or legal guardians) must do so on their behalf.

But the Spanish Civil Code (C C), states that for these cases, because of the generally high value of most properties, an extra guarantee should be put in place in order to define the interests of the minor and to demonstrate that legal representatives act to the benefit of the minor. Thus, article 166 CC, requires that parents, in order to sell a minor’s real estate, must obtain prior judicial authorisation, following a hearing from the Public Prosecutor’s Office. When the parents of minors come to our law firm to find out if they can sell an asset that belongs (part or whole) to a minor, the answer is YES, but it must be proven before a judge, that the sale of said property is in the best interests of the minor. T here can be a number of reasons, for example:

The property has become a burden and a cost for the minor which they cannot afford. The money from the sale is required by the minor in order to pay for necessary goods or services such as medical treatment, etc. Possibility of a direct sale The Voluntary Jurisdiction law provides for the possibility of requesting and obtaining an authorisation for a Direct Sale (that is, directly between parents or real estate agents, and buyers). This is a better option than selling through a public court auction, as you are likely to obtain a higher price and the transaction should be quicker. In this case, an expert opinion or appraisal must be obtained which indicates the real market value of the property.

Request for prior authorisation As indicated, if you represent a minor and want to sell a property, you must submit this request for judicial authorisation prior to the sale. It is N OT necessary to have a preliminary sale agreement and it will be sufficient to present an appraisal or valuation that indicates the value of the property, to allow the judge to authorise a sale for a value equal or higher than the appraised value. Documents to be presented Documents that prove property rights must be submitted, as well as confirmation that the applicant is the minor’s legal representative and an indication of the value of the property (with the indicated appraisal). Finally, evidence of why

the sale should be allowed needs to be provided. This court authorisation will allow the minors’ representative to sign a private contract of sale, or go to the notary to sign the sale. After the sale, the court should normally be informed of the destination of the money obtained, in order to confirm that the minor has received it. SPAIN’S Education minister Isabel Celaa left Madrid and flew to Bilbao on Friday, October 9, the same day the city went into lockdown. Photographs of Celaa that were taken on the plane surfaced on the social media. Education Ministry sources explained that Celaa had initially flown to Bilbao, where she lives, on October 9, intending to attend an event in Pamplona with the central government’s Interior minister, Fernando Grande Marlaska, the next day. This was suspended but although she was unwell during the night, Celaa decided to attend the Cabinet meeting that approved the State of Alarm for Madrid.

Three Student Outbreak Arrests THREE men have been arrested in Sweden on suspicion of the mur­ der of Flamur Beqiri, who was fatally shot outside his home in Battersea on Christ­ mas Eve, 2019. The 36­year­old, who had a wife and young child, was the brother of former Real Housewives of Cheshire star Misse Beqiri. Three Swedish na­ tionals, aged 33, 31 and 22, were arrested on October 8, at ad­ dresses in Stockholm and Vaxjo, under a UK European Arrest War­ rant (EAW). NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY has seen more than 1,000 students test positive for coronavirus. Banned THREATENING debt letters that cause people to contemplate suicide have been banned following a successful campaign by Martin Lewis, founder of MoneySavingExpert.com and the Money and Mental Health Policy Institute (MMHPI). Lewis argued that language used in the 1974 Consumer Credit Act has caused people to think about taking their own life as a result of debt letters. New rules are expected to be introduced by the Treasury in December 2020 and will state that lenders have up to six months to make changes to their practices.

TOM PARKER, the 32­year­old singer of boyband The Wanted, has been left fighting for his life after being given the news that he has stage four glioblastoma, a terminal brain tumour. The father­of­one said, “I’m still in complete shock, it’s so much to take in.” The singer suffered a seizure in July, then six weeks later he had another more serious seizure and was rushed to hospital. Tom told his fans that he had already begun his chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment in a heart­breaking post on social media platform Instagram.

Paramedics seek help MANY paramedics in the NHS have been left heartbroken and traumatised because of all of the recent non­Covid related deaths. The trauma has left workers feeling uneasy and the circumstances are now becoming unbearable. Patients during this pandemic who have non­ Covid related diseases have passed away because they have been scare mongered into not going to hospital. They fear catching the virus as they are at high risk and also do not want to put more work onto the NHS workers. The last thing people should do is delay their treatments out of fear. Not only does it affect the patient but also the workers as they have experienced too much death during this virus. Many workers will experience ma­ jor PTSD (post­traumatic stress disorder) because of the trauma they have been through and working under such extreme pressure.

WEATHER in the UK is set to take a colder turn with wide­ spread frost being forecasted for the weekend and one book­ maker has slashed its odds for this being the coldest October on record. Four days during the first 11 this month have already seen temperatures drop below zero and more sub­zero days are be­

ing predicted for later in the month. October 2 saw the coldest day so far with the mercury at Shap in Cumbria falling to ­2.4C (27.7F) and this has led book­ makers Coral to cut odds on this month beating the record. The coldest October on record was 1917 and Coral are now offering 4­5 odds for that

record to be beaten. The betting industry giants are also offering 1­2 for snow to fall in the UK this month. A spokesman for the compa­ ny said: "Winter is set to arrive early this year and with temper­ atures falling fast over the next few days, the odds have been slashed on this month ending as the coldest October on record."

Smuggling Tragedy FOUR people smugglers are on trial as they are connected to the death of 39 Viet­ namese nationals. The lorry was full of many Vietnamese nationals, from the age of 15 to 44. The smug­ glers tried loading more peo­ ple into the lorry in an at­ tempt to receive more money. The four criminals got paid around £10,000 per per­ son they successfully man­ aged to smuggle in. The 39 that were found dead, suffocated on their jour­ ney from Zeebrugge in Bel­ gium to Purfleet in Essex. The criminals disclosed they were under pressure to get more people into the country. The three men, Eamonn Harrison, Mr Kennedy and Valentin Calota all denied be­ ing part of a larger people smuggling activity. However, the fourth man, Gheorge Nica admitted to both the 39 counts of manslaughter and also larger people smuggling operations.

Covid Kills Beaches PLASTIC WASTE: Putting people off visiting.

BEAUTIFUL stretches of Britain’s beaches are being blighted by a sea of PPE that is devastating the coastline with waste. In a two­month period on one stretch of Cornish beach alone, charity volunteers cleaned up over 650 used plastic gloves and over 250 surgical face masks. These areas are normally a bustling hub for surfing, swimming and crowds of visitors, however both locals and the visiting population is becoming more and more disenchanted with the area due to the ever­increasing waste on the traditionally sandy shores. It is estimated that the area as a whole has suffered debris caused by the Covid­19 pandemic totalling thou­ sands of items of discarded waste. This worrying new trend means that even in the future, when Covid is a distant memory, we may still end up suffering the ramifications on our environment for generations to come.

INSPIRATIONAL Cardiff pensioner, Dilys Price, has passed away at 88 after complet­ ing 1,139 solo parachute jumps all in the name of charity. Price started her skydiving career at the age of 54 and entered the Guinness Book of World Records in 2013 as the world’s oldest female solo parachute jumper. Price, with a background in dance, also founded a charity which provided vulnerable people and those with learning difficulties access to free creative movement pro­ grammes which help their cognitive and mo­ tor functions. She was awarded an OBE in 2003 and the Pride of Britain awards in 2017.

MORE than four million acres of vineyards in Cali­ fornia’s Napa Valley have been torched by the ongoing California wildfires. It is estimated that 80 per cent of 2020’s wine stock in the famous wine producing area of the US will become unusable. The huge fires, which have continued to rage since the beginning of September 2020, have been classified as the worst ongoing wildfires in US history. To date, at least 18 vineyards in the elite wine producing region have been either damaged or fully destroyed with many producers having to write off their entire 2020 crop as they are ren­ dered useless by either smoke, heat or fire dam­ age.

Masked Future A TWO­YEAR mask­wearing marathon is expected by a Spanish virol­ ogist as the fight against Covid­19 could continue to run and run. Ac­ cording to Dr Margarita del Val, it could take a couple of years to get Covid­19 under control; with vaccines, treatments and preventives set to help the fight. Dr Margarita del Val, head of the Spanish National Research Coun­ cil (CSIC) said: “with the many holes in the potential coverage offered by a vaccine, those masks may remain a better tool for some time.”

Stories of strength By Damon Mitchell EWN had the pleasure of speak­ ing exclusively to expat author Jacqueline Carpenter who after the success of her first novel ‘Louisa,’ is back to repeat that success with part two ‘Joan.’ Jacqueline lives in Los Alcazares on the Mar Menor after relocat­ ing from Essex three years ago. The books are part of a trilogy which begins in 1937 when the Second World War is looming.

The protagonist in the first nov­ el is Louisa a 15­year­old girl grow­ ing up in London with a life full of emotion, love, strength, happi­ ness and sorrow. In the second book ‘Joan,’ Louisa, is now a pretty war wid­ ow, it is the 1950s and she is re­ married and living with her new husband in a beautiful farming vil­ lage in Kent. Jacqueline explained he reason for taking up writing, “My nan

used to tell me stories about the war. Inspired by her tales I felt I had to write some of these down so that my grandchildren could also read these stories.” She continued, “ I wanted to motivate young girls by reminding them how strong and indepen­ dent women were in those days.” ‘Joan’ was released on October 2 and along with ‘Louisa’ is avail­ able on Amazon.

A RECENT investigation has revealed that a mil­ lionaire takeaway pizza chain tycoon is suspect­ ed of stealing more than €280,000 of taxpay­ ers’ cash by claiming fake Eat Out to Help Out meals. Raheel Choudhary, who owns 61 Papa John’s franchise restaurants is the US giant’s largest UK franchisee, allegedly instructed staff to record thousands of ‘phantom covers’ while the government scheme was running. Because these non­existent meals were classed as ‘Eat Out to Help Out,’ the UK taxpay­ er footed half the bill. However, most of his restaurants were not even eligible for the offer because they were collection and delivery only.

AROUND 20,000 chicks have been abandoned at a Madrid airport, prompting an appeal from a Spanish animal welfare group for help to save them. The little chicks were found in boxes at Adolfo Suarez Madrid­Barajas Airport, waiting to be shipped, but the planned shipment to Africa was refused. The boxes remained at the airport for three days, and sadly many died having been left in the hangar. They are appealing for donations of heat lamps, cardboard and flat drinking troughs, so that the chicks can be kept warm, have access to water and food. Kabaeva is a 37­year­ old Olympic gold medallist, with many more awards under her belt and she announced she was two months pregnant with his chil­ dren in 2018. A LIVE music industry trial will be a worldwide first dur­ ing the coronavirus pandem­ ic as Barcelona launches a Covid­19 safe event. The Apolo concert hall in Barcelona will host a 1,000­ person event after the an­ nouncement on Sunday, Oc­ tober 4. This will be the first trial of this type of event and the

event will take place towards the end of October. The organisers said that masks and hand sanitisation will be mandatory, however social distancing regulation need not be followed. To be allowed to enter the event, attendees must un­ dertake a rapid test, be con­ firmed negative and show no symptoms.

Italian Restrictions UK visitors to Italy are now to produce evidence of a negative Covid­ 19 test on arrival after a clampdown on countries ‘at a greater risk’ which also includes France and Spain. Travellers now need to show they have taken a test within the last 72 hours of arrival along with a negative result. Those unable to provide evidence will need to take a test in Italy, with anyone test­ ing positive required to quarantine until they are able to provide two negative tests.

Even if your own municipality has some stricter regulations in place, but no building inspector has called on you to enforce them, you are not legally obligated. More modern buildings are designed for hallways and staircases to block direct airflow that feeds fires, but even they are not required to have alarm sys­ tems or fire escapes. It was only a few years ago that Tesco hit the headlines for the wrong reason as three of its senior staff were accused of false accounting, but having shaken off that problem, it

ALTHOUGH it was initially be­ lieved that criminals might em­ bezzle up to £1.9 billion (€2.1 billion) from the Government Bounce Back Scheme, the UK National Audit Office (NAO) has announced that it esti­ mates that the scale of loss could be as much as £26 billion (€28.6 billion). That is an incredible 60 per cent of the amount loaned and the main banks involved, Bar­ clays, HSBC, Lloyds, NatWest and Santander, which provided more than £30 bn (€33 bn) in funding will be protected and should between them earn more than £1 bn (€1.1 bn) in government paid interest. To summarise, the Bounce Back Loan Scheme provides registered and unregistered businesses with loans of up to

£50,000 (€55,000) or a maxi­ mum of 25 per cent of annual turnover, to maintain their fi­ nancial health during the pan­ demic. According to the NAO, once the government decided to support small businesses facing cash flow problems owing to the pandemic, it moved very quickly to set up a scheme. It prioritised one aspect of value for money ­ payment speed ­ over almost all others and has been prepared to tol­ erate a potentially very high level of losses as a result. The problem is that because of the speed in which it set up and the 1.2 million cases ap­ proved in record time, it didn’t really know who was legiti­ mate and who would be able to pay back loans received.

Social Security cost APPEARING before a Parlia­ mentary Committee, Minister of Inclusion and Social Security, José Luis Escrivá has confirmed that social security payments to Spanish residents impacted by Covid­19 amount to almost €13 billion up to the end of September. The largest expense has been on ERTE (furlough) at €5.218 billion, followed by sup­ port for the self­employed at €4.138 billion with €2.2 billion lost by the exemption granted from paying social security with a further €1.369 billion spent on those with temporary ill­ nesses or holiday. Overall, when taking into ac­ count loss of tax revenue the government is €22 billion out of pocket.

Free beverages RESTAURANT chains and fran­ chises have suffered badly with the Covid­19 restrictions and the Restalia Group, which has brands such as 100 Mon­ taditos and La Sureña, has launched an unusual plan to help all of its franchisees af­ fected by restrictive measures. For those located in the most restricted areas, the group will supply one month of free beverages, either beer or soft drinks for the month of October based on average consumption. In addition, it will run ad­ verts encouraging visitors to the outlets even though num­ bers seated are low.

There seems to be a complete dearth of blockbuster movies be­ ing released, in many cases be­ cause so many were postponed due to coronavirus, but without decent films to draw people into the cinema and the additional cost of reducing audiences and keeping them safe is simply caus­ ing problems all round. The fact that TV generally is

relying on repeats or old episodes of programmes filmed before the lockdown, coupled with the success of the espi­ onage film Tenet which was re­ leased in August suggests that there is an audience anxious to enjoy a night at the movies. The major distributors howev­ er want to ensure that they re­ ceive the maximum income from theatrical releases, espe­ cially in America, before letting them out for TV and then DVD screening, so there is very little new quality product available to view. In the UK, Cineworld employs 5,500 staff in 127 venues and it says that the closures are tempo­ rary and it is monitoring the situ­ ation so that once it has more in­ formation about planned releases it will in turn be able to consider when to reopen.

Use your common sense Boat Party LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT HERE we go again. Some weeks ago I re­ ferred to Corona deniers as being akin to members of the Flat Earth Society. Well, despite the derision I took for that statement, my opinion hasn’t changed one iota. Do people truly believe that all the leaders of the free world, including the ‘Kranky’ person, have actually put all their heads together and conspired to cripple all their economies and throw their respective countries into chaos - merely to gain some kind or Orwellian hold over their citizens? Are you listening to yourselves? You sound utterly ridiculous. Our leaders may be making errors of judgement, some of their rules and regulations may appear to be over the top and ‘unfair,’ some of the ‘numbers’ may be incorrect, but they are doing their darndest to control and eliminate an unprecedented virus that is running riot and killing the population. To achieve success, they are acting on

the advice of the highest and most expert medical authorities in the land. What suddenly made all those social media posters experts in pandemics and how to deal with them? The minute we began to ease off and allow all the diddums’ to go for drinkie poos and ‘let their hair down’ the numbers began to rise again. It’s not a fallacy; the infection rate is now increasing at an alarming rate. The front line workers of the NHS are once again under extreme pressure to control and deal with the extra influx of patients. For those who insist it’s nothing more than a touch of the flu, new figures out today show that between January and August three times the amount of people died from the Coronavirus than died from Pneumonia and Influenza combined! The areas that are now finding themselves under the strict restrictions has nothing to do with north and south divides, it’s to do with numbers of people not complying with the rules and regulations they were asked to observe. The sooner people stop crying in their milk and voluntarily knuckle down and follow the rules, the quicker we will see the end of this nightmare. Why should

those who do comply be suffering because selfish numbers of the population decide they are being ‘hard done by’ and know better than the experts? We are all suffering in one way or another. No one is getting any preferential treatment. If the selfcentered minority would observe the rules, keep their toys in their prams and see a bit of sense, the government wouldn’t need to make and enforce new laws, which have to be implemented by extra police patrols and subsequent arrests. Make no mistake. Everyone wants this over. Even if you halve the published numbers you have to be totally moronic to deny the world is in the grip of a virus that, if not contained or eliminated, will continue to kill and incapacitate our citizens for well into the foreseeable future. AS if Covid is not enough, we are on the verge of annual seasonal flu season. One of the main barriers in fighting Covid is lack of knowl­ edge. Therefore, doctors use what we know about the flu, which is similar, to identify a possibly infected perosn. Flu symptoms include fever, headache and a dry cough, however these can al­

so appear with Covid. Alternatively, coronavirus presents some symptoms of its own, such as loss of smell, taste and difficulty in breath­ ing. Although we do not yet have a vaccine against SARS­ CoV­2, what we do have is one against the flu. Keeping this disease at bay can be a key fac­ tor in not putting more pres­ sure on the health system.

Just a few conspiracy theories MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man UK cinemas are closing ­ another sign of the economic catastrophe happening worldwide. The reason is that yet another studio has pulled another potential block­ buster, to be shown next year, instead of this year. So far the new James Bond and Mission Impossible are two of the the 30ish that have been put back. This is a disaster in so many ways. The spiral effect is going to be no cinemas, which means nowhere to show movies. This means no revenue to make the movies which plays right into the hands of Netflix, Prime and Apple. See the connec­ tion? They are all online companies and will now be in control. Of course the talent that appears in these movies will also be affected. At the moment movies aren’t even being made because of Covid. Maybe the conspiracy theorists aren’t too far off saying it’s all a plot. Talking about conspiracy theories, there are a serious amount about regarding Covid. Here’s a few to choose from ­ 5G ­ not sure how a virus travels via a mobile network. Bill Gates ­ this is a Q Anon one.

You really need to check this scary mob out. It escaped from a Chinese lab ­ slightly more plausible than some of the others. It was developed as a biological weapon in China. When China heard this they came back with their own theory that it was the USA that imported it into China. This one’s a biggy from the likes of David Icke and Alex Jones ­ two absolute nutters as far as I’m concerned: Covid­19 doesn’t actually exist, but is a plot by the globalist elite to take away our freedom. Early weaker versions of this theory were prevalent on the political right in the notion the novel coronavirus would be ‘no worse than flu’ and later versions are now influencing anti­lockdown protests across several states in the US. Because believers increasingly refuse to observe social dis­ tancing measures, they could directly help to spread the epidemic in their localities and increase the resulting death rate. This is their theory not mine. The point I’m making is nobody actually knows what’s going on but whatever it is it’s grinding the world to a halt and I’m fed up with it all. Leapy Lee As a regular reader of [Leapy Lee’s] column I agree with most of what you say, particularly this week’s column which gave out about the sentences handed out to young oiks for the crimes they have committed. I can remember back to the 60’s when my younger brother was in a borstal in Rochester for a crime he did not commit, but got six months for the crime was possession of cannabis. He was a local oink known to the CID and had been fitted up by one officer on his way home from work. They found minute traces in his trouser pockets, but that was enough to convict him. My elder brother at the same time got three months for bouncing a few cheques, which if I remember rightly did

SUNDAY is closing time in Spain. It is traditionally a day of relaxation, reflection, worship and family. For most shops this means that they are closed and therefore the public need to ensure that any shopping should be carried out on Saturday. Sunday shopping has always been a debate subject in many parts of the world. Many people who agree that shops should be able to choose whether to open on a Sunday argue that the idea of remaining closed no longer fits with the 24/7 global economy of the 21st century. There is also the argument that Sunday is one of the few days when people are fully available to enjoy leisurely shopping due to working through the week. However, there are just as many opponents of the full opening of retail environments on a Sunday. Many see it as a dangerous symbol of commercialism that is taking over the human condition and the full and unbridled opening of shops at all times would see a loss of valuable time and, potentially, see increases in working hours and the destruction of much needed down time. There are also objections on the ground of religion. Particularly in countries like Spain which still have a highly religious community. So, with so many arguments for and against Sunday opening, it is clear that there is no specific consensus on the way forward. We believe that Sunday shopping should be allowed and that it is more in keeping with our modern society, however, you may disagree … and that is okay too.

I got three months and a £100 fine. The two weeks and £200 I could have lived with, but three months! Absolutely ridiculous compared with the rest of the sentences I heard being handed down that day, at the end of the day the only thing I can say is that there is no such thing as British justice, unless you are supposedly under privileged or on legal aid. Timeline and Deadlines Create realistic timelines and deadlines to complete each ac­ tion. Understand your own strengths, get to know yourself inside and out. Make it fun! A small reward after each action is

completed will help motivation. Again, keep the end goal, clearly in your mind. Your Why Many people try to achieve new things. Whether it be to lose weight, reinvent their image or even try a new business. But what most do not do is ask them­ selves why they are doing it. If you are not passionate about why you want to achieve your end goal, I can guarantee you will NOT see it through to the end. There will always be some­ thing else that comes up to take you away from what you are try­ ing to achieve.

Life as a Bipolar Mama MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED THE ups and downs of parenthood alone is enough to make anyone feel ‘barmy’ let alone juggling parenthood and a mental illness and all that comes with it. My to-do list is never ending: school run, go to work, make sure I remember to send my daughter in with an extra pair of socks for her gymnastics after school activity (I forgot to this week major mum guilt), food shop, deal with the dog and the cat, a bit of light dusting and sweep up the clumps of dog hair that seem to form no matter how many times I sweep, get dinner on, help with homework, make sure school bag is packed for the next day, shower-time and bedtime. That sums up pretty much every regular Mama’s day, now throw into the mix : a panic attack because I’m three minutes late leaving the house even though I have allowed for this to go horribly wrong because I always plan for worse case scenario, yet I can’t control the overwhelming feeling and I’m now trying to hold back the tears until I at least drop my daughter at school just so she doesn’t see. Go to work - it’s been a great day, had a sale and met some lovely people, I’m happy, birds are chirping and skipping on my way home. Get home and the big black cloud comes over

me, I had planned on cooking a tasty lasagne but I’m too tired and just want the day to be over, I can’t cope with anything else today. I just want it to be dark enough to be able to go to bed, I get into bed and all of a sudden, I’m in floods of tears and I don’t know why. Crazy right!? But it was a good day, wasn’t it?! And this is the thing, I have no control over these feelings and thoughts. Being a bipolar single mama has its challenges like any parent I lose the plot sometimes. I do find it easier now to hold my hands up and admit when I need help. When I am a bit stressed, and thankfully my wobbles are small these days on the whole, I have a great support network, and so does my daughter. I am so thankful for the amazing relationship with my daughter and the older she gets, the more she understands and the easier I am finding it to explain everything to her. Mama doesn’t want to cry but sometimes she has to, to let it all out and start again. Some days we can go to the park and eat ice cream, some days Mama needs to simply go home, sit there and breathe. Scientists have warned that this increases the risks of cancer and other illnesses later in life. Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, (USA) focused their study on teenage girls. For three days, the study’s 100 teenage participants stopped using their regular cosmetics and were provided with others labelled free of chemicals, including phthalates, parabens, triclosan and oxybenzone; all chemicals thought to affect changes of hormone levels within young women. After three days without their regular health and beauty products, dangerous chemical levels dropped by 45 per cent.

ROAD TEST by Mark Slack SO many people think that un­ less you have owned an Alfa Romeo you are a not a true petrol head, and you can kind of see their point. While classic Alfas probably still deserve their reputation for being tem­ peramental, newer models have long left that reputation behind. The trouble is reputations can take a long time to disap­ pear and that’s a shame be­ cause it prevents many people from enjoy­

Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio ing some cracking cars, and they don’t come anymore cracking than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio. The ‘standard’ Stelvio range is by no means backward in ac­ celerating forward, with even the least athletic engine pro­ ducing 190hp and the most powerful 280hp. It is the 510hp Quadrifoglio that is the real star though, it’s like an au­ tomotive Summanus. This is an SUV very defi­

nitely designed with perfor­ mance, rather than off­roading in mind, and it REALLY per­ forms. While it does have off road ability it’s certainly no Land Rover, but that really misses the point of the Stelvio. If you want all­wheel­drive confi­ dence, performance, practicali­ ty and lots of fun, the Quadri­ foglio is for you. It doesn’t come cheap though with prices starting at €80,710 (£73,195), which puts the Alfa against some very stiff competition from arguably more premium badges. Standard fare on the Quadri­ foglio is suit­ ably gener­ ous, as you would ex­ pect on cars of this price, and the interior is a heady mix of

leather, Alcantara and, if you spend €4,052 (£3,675), carbon fibre seat backs and steering wheel accents. On the road the Quadri­ foglio has a bit of a dual per­ sonality. It is quite happy to potter through urban streets, but show it a more open road and its inner darkness is re­ vealed. Reaching 62 mph in 3.8 sec­ onds is good in anyone’s book, but when you’re talking about a large SUV it is particularly im­ pressive. The Quadrifoglio is light thanks to the use of alu­ minium and carbon fibre, but its performance all round, not just speed, from the way it puts power down, handling and steering is superbly ac­ complished. You can add a more stop­ ping power too, with optional carbon fibre brakes at €6,506 (£5,900). No that’s not a mis­ print! This is a well­honed, well­

crafted and hugely entertain­ ing car. It manages to combine so many positive attributes and is a delight to drive. I sus­

pect many premium badge dri­ vers will stay loyal to their usu­ al fare, but the few that don’t will not be disappointed.
