NEW RESTRICTIONS
NEW COVID-19 measures have been announced for the Andalucia region that see a range of new measures being made available, SHOULD they be necessary, to curb the spread of coronavirus in specific regions or towns. After a meeting on Monday, September 28 and a further consolidatory session on Tuesday, September 29, the new measures were agreed as a necessary safeguard to ensure that the community transmission of the virus is contained. Currently, only Casariche, Sevilla, is subject to the new restrictions with a range of rapid testing occurring throughout the region in 11 other areas to ensure that appropriate monitoring of the wider situation takes place and is as accurate as possible. Casariche will see the town blocked off for two weeks with only essential workers being allowed in and out of the area. The measures that will be at the disposal of

the government will include limiting groups to a maximum of six in bars and restaurants, but currently there is no mention of restrictions in a private residence. Additional measures MAY also include limitation on face-to-face teaching, restriction of social mobility, further restriction of numbers at funerals, wakes, wedding and additional time restrictions for the hospitality sector. The restrictions may
see bars, restaurants and commercial premises closed at 10pm and those environments returning to a restriction of 50 per cent capacity with a maintenance of at least 1.5 metres of social distancing between customer groups. Funerals and wakes would be restricted in attendance to 15 people outside and 10 if carried out indoors. Weddings would see a restriction in size to 30
attendees whether in an indoor or outdoor space. Further more, public and private markets would not be allowed to open, however sports facilities may continue to operate but only at 50 per cent capacity. They state that the primary objective is to ensure that the primary health sector is not overloaded by new infections and that the containment of the spread is carried out to
the benefit of the wider community. The Junta de Andalucia has accepted that the restrictions, if implemented, would have wide reaching social and economic results and, as such, will ONLY implement if a town, city or region demonstrates 500 cases per 100,000 inhabitants within the previous 14 days. At the time of print, the majority of Andalucia will NOT be required to undertake these measures however, the situation is fast changing and changes could occur regularly.

there aren’t too many venues open at the moment, they are still practising, writing and recording and no doubt this is one local band that will find success.

Loggerhead turtles hatched VOLUNTEERS and experts spent 16 days protecting the loggerhead turtle eggs which were transferred from a busy beach in Los Boliches to Cabopino beach as it gave a chance for the greatest number of hatchlings to emerge. Although they weren’t expected until October, the first tiny creatures emerged over a period of nights during late September and in all 49 of these exotic reptiles appeared and were transferred to Algeciras, where they will be cared for until they are large enough to be released into the sea. This is the first recorded laying of eggs by this type of turtle anywhere on the Costa del Sol and it is thought that the turtles head towards Spain and cooler waters due to climate change.

TAPAS (The Andalucia Performing Arts Society) had a ‘runway’ success at its recent Fashion Show held in the gardens of El Postillon, Alhaurin El Grande. On a beautiful afternoon and evening 11 TAPAS models wowed the audience with over 80 fabulous outfits from wardrobe stock. Many premium designer labels were modelled, including beautiful evening and day wear. Restrictions fury HUNDREDS of people gathered on Sunday September 27 in Madrid to request the resignation of the regional president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, for the restrictive measures put in place by her government to deal with the coronavirus pandemic. The organisers were the unions UGT

BORIS’ PLEA THE UK Prime Minister has identified coronavirus as a “common foe” and called all nations to put aside their differences to unite in a global handling of the crisis. He has said that the bond between nations has been frayed as a result of the virus and urged world leaders to unify under a single strategy. Johnson, who made the speech in a video conference to the United Nations General Assembly, said, “the very notion of the international community looks tattered.” He added, “Never again must we wage 193 separate campaigns against the same enemy.” The Prime Minister set out a preventative strategy for the global handling of future pandemics including the commencement of zoonotic research labs across the globe and highlighted the need for a global alert system for future pandemics.

KENT PASSPORT BREXIT for lorry drivers means they will need a Kent Access Passport (KAP) to join anticipated 7,000-long tailbacks for cross Channel ferries. Michael Gove has confirmed that a ‘de facto’ Brexit border is to be introduced for lorry drivers entering Kent to travel on to the EU. The minister for the Cabinet Office and chancellor of the duchy of Lancaster told the Commons that lorry drivers would need a “Kent access permit” to get into the county from January 1 with “police and ANPR cameras [automatic number plate recognition]” to help in enforcing the system. “We want to make sure that people

WINE TIME A VIRAL video on social media shows the dramatic moment that a Spanish winery in Villamalea in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula lost over 50,000 litres of red wine after one of their tanks burst. The dramatic footage shows a red river tumbling from the burst tank, gushing the wine onto the ground with a massive degree of force. The huge quantity of wine flooding outside the Vitivinos wineries, located in Villamalea, Albacete can be seen flowing through the winery and also shows the
precise location of the burst tank. The Vitivinos winery was founded in 1969,
with a production of 6,000,000 kilos of grapes and today has 1,570 hectares of vineyards.

BORIS BECKER: Is now facing a possible jail sentence. TENNIS legend Boris Becker looked anguished after he was told that he faces seven years in jail if found guilty of hiding assets including a Chelsea flat, two German properties and €1.44m (£1.2m) in cash when he filed for bankruptcy three years ago. Becker is accused of hiding a Chelsea property, bank accounts and company shares from
bankruptcy proceedings. The former world No 1 appeared to have bags under his eyes as he put his head in his hands while dining at Scott’s seafood restaurant in Mayfair, London. Troubled Becker was declared bankrupt in June 2017, and last year faced claims that he had failed to fully declare his estate to the Insolvency Service.

REPORTS have uncovered that a fifth of all UK residents would consider turning down a Covid vaccine when one is finally ready. Those questioned showed concerns about misinformation surrounding the vaccines that are currently in their trial stages. Out of 17,500 subjects questioned by University College London, only 49 per
cent were ‘very likely’ to take their chances, 78 per cent were ‘likely’ to, 22 per cent were ‘unlikely’ and 10 per cent were opposed to being vaccinated. On September 6, the British pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca suspended worldwide trials of its Covid vaccine after registering a serious side effect in a volunteer in the UK. Trials have since restarted.

Sagrada Familia was supposed to be completed in 2026. However, the building hasn’t been touched since March because of the pandemic. Antoni Gaudi drew and started building Sagrada Temple back in 1822, and died in 1926 which is why they wanted the

THE Covid vaccine has become an obsession for every country in the world with each rushing to be the first to release theirs. However, the safest vaccine could be developed in the Spanish laboratory of the National Centre for Biotechnology in Madrid. The difference of this vaccine with others is that the team has previous experience in working with other coronaviruses, and according to the Spanish laboratory director and virologist Luis Enjuanes, “None of them have been working with coronavirus for 35 years as is our case.”
Disappointing stock SOON after lockdown high street stores were forced to close their doors, and a charity scheme called Lost Stock appeared, offering shoppers the chance to have a mystery fashion box delivered to their door. Customers provided a range of details including their age, gender, size and clothing preferences for the retailers to match items, they then paid £39, and waited for a parcel containing a minimum of three items of clothing, which they were told would retail for approximately £70. However, the boxes have not lived up to the expectations of many, as the clothing that arrived were not the ones they hoped for.
Partial distance BRITAIN’S GOT TALENT fans have accused the show of breaking social distancing rules after illusionist Kevin Quantum touched fingertips with the judges. The illusionist, Kevin Quantum, seemed to be following strict social distancing guidelines elsewhere on the show, but what caused the complaints is when he appeared to join fingers with both Ant McPartlin and Amanda Holden for his semi-final trick.
Prior to his performance, Kevin had asked all the judges to use hand sanitiser, but, he later touched fingertips with Amanda and then did the same with Ant. Amanda then joined fingers with Alesha Dixon as David Walliams touched Ashley Banjo and Ant. The group stood apart during the performance, although still touching fingertips. Many viewers believed the measures just weren’t enough.

The zoo said the incident occurred at around 10am when the 46-year-old zookeeper entered the interior of the gorilla enclosure for the usual routine of breakfast, cleaning and preparing the facilities. The statement explains that in an internal area with a triple door the keeper came face-to-face with 29year-old gorilla Malabo, who leapt on her. They transferred the injured zookeeper to the Clinico San Carlos hospital, where she is being treated for head and chest trauma, and multiple fractures to her thorax, SAMUR-Civil Protection duty chief Angel Casas revealed.

Third Wave ONE of the government’s top scientific advisors has warned that a third wave of coronavirus in the UK is “entirely possible” unless a vaccine is found soon. Professor Mark Woolhouse, professor of infectious disease epidemiology in the Usher Institute from the University of Edinburgh, said the current strategy of stopping flare-ups with lockdowns was failing to solve the problem “in the long-term.” Woolhouse, who sits on the government’s advisory body that models pandemics, said a vaccine needed to be found quickly if the government wanted to provide a lasting solution to the pandemic. He added, “…this is just another demonstration that lockdown doesn’t solve the problem, it defers it.”

IN the first week of new Covid restrictions, admissions to Madrid’s Hospitals fell from 324 new patients to 79. Spanish PM, Pedro Sanchez, had warned Isabel Díaz Ayuso that if she couldn’t take control of the coronavirus crisis in Madrid then the Federal government would.
If the figures just released continue to subside in Madrid then this action may not be necessary. The Community of Madrid announced tighter restrictions on eight new areas earlier this week but ruled out total confinement - they decided against a total lockdown.

A BRITISH pensioner claimed £17,000 of UK benefits - even though she was living in Spain. Lesley Udberg admitted to Newcastle Crown Court two counts of dishonesty and failing to notify a change of circumstances after she claimed more than €19,000 (£17,000) while she was living in
Spain. The pensioner, who fraudulently pocketed thousands of pounds in UK benefits while living in Spain, has been given a suspended prison sentence for benefit fraud. It is understood that Lesley Udberg had a number of health conditions which meant she was unable to work from the age of 42.
TORRA GONE QUIM TORRA has been told to go after a high court decision has seen him released from his role as the president of the Generalitat. A Supreme Court ruling has rejected Torra’s defence claims and has unanimously agreed to disqualify him from holding public office for a year and a half. The decision made today upholds the sentence already imposed by the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia in December 2019, in which he was fined €30,000 and originally disqualified for disobeying the Central Electoral Board.

A SUCCESSFUL legal fight was fought by Uber and their victory means they can continue to operate in London. Magistrates have found Uber to be ‘fit and proper’ and have allowed them to continue operating in London after the Transport for London (TfL) refused to renew Uber’s operating licence. TfL refused to renew the licence due to safety concerns and this is not the first time this has happened. This latest hearing follows a four-day hearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court earlier this
month with issues between Uber and TfL going back as far as 2017. The decision made today by Deputy chief magistrate Tan Ikram will
come as a welcome relief for Uber, although they were granted permission to continue operating in London during the appeal process.
STRANDED A CONSIDERABLY big shark was found on a beach in Guardamar del Segura, Alicante. The 270-kilo and threemetre long shark was seen struggling in the shallow waters. Many people tried to save the shark, trying to push it back into the water. The size of the animal was a massive variable that meant the shark could unfortunately not be saved. It has been stated by the mayor of the town, José Luis Sáez that the shark did not survive. Sharks are very easily worn out if they become stranded in shallow waters as their own weight exhausts them.

Benalmádena Mental Health Day Free face masks THE mayor of Benalmadena, Víctor Navas and fellow councillors appeared with the president of the Association of Relatives and People with Mental Illness of the Costa del Sol (AFESOL), Concha Cuevas, to speak about the needs of people with mental illness and their families. “On the occasion of the celebration of World Mental Health Day on October 10, ... we have met with the president of AFESOL to address various issues that concern this group,” reported the mayor. THE Spanish government has given 17,500 face masks to Benalmadena Council for distribution to public service workers and people at risk of social exclusion. Of this, 4,150 masks will be distributed among essential public service workers, 10,850 given to students at risk of social exclusion as well as non-teaching personnel associated with educational centres, and 2,000 for users of Social Services. “The distribution of the masks has begun, and will be carried out by Benalmadena Civil Protection volunteers, whom we thank once again for their generous involvement and constant commitment to public service to citizens,” said councillor for Security, Javier Marín.

THERE has been a great deal of upset in the entertainment world with regards to the lack of assistance that the majority of councils have been giving to ensure that live entertainment can continue particularly in venues visited by expatriates. Now the Benalmadena
Council has recognised this problem and arranged for a meeting between two Council members and local business owners to see if any useful formula can be found to allow for bars and places of entertainment which do not serve food to open with live music again.

More hybrid vehicles THE Local Police in Benalmadena will shortly receive five new hybrid vehicles to add to their fleet which the Council estimates will save as much as €17,000 per annum in fuel and will allow a cut in the overall fuel budget to €55,000. The Council intends to continue replacing traditionally fuelled cars with hybrid vehicles and after Malaga City already has the highest number of these environmentally less polluting vehicles in the whole of Malaga Province.
“The technicians have spent several weeks looking for a formula that would allow this expansion of the activity, in a fast and easy way for entrepreneurs to execute, and with minimal expense, since it will not require a change of licence,” councillor for Commerce Javier Marín said. “In this way, they will be able to adapt to the needs raised by the new regulations, and retain their activity,” he added. It should be noted that this new opportunity only applies to venues with live music and does not mean that discos can reopen.
Asphalt plan AS part of an ongoing programme, Benalmadena Council expects to spend €932,000 on asphalting 13 kilometres comprising 50 streets through the municipality this year. This is in addition to the €4 million spent previously to cover 60 kilometres of streets and roads and the 2021 budget will include additional areas to work on.

THE president of the Community of M a d r i d , I s a b e l D í a z Ay u s o , a n nounced over the weekend that she was willing to close all areas and towns with more than 500 infections per 100,000 inhabitants, on the condition that this measure is applied throughout Spain. On Friday, September 25, Ayuso ruled out applying mobility restrictions in all districts of the capital and in municipalities with the highest rate of coronavirus infections, as recommended by the Ministry of Health, and extended the limitations to only eight new health zones, something Health Minister Salvador Illa disapproved of. Given this, Illa urged the capital to review its measures, “We have to take control of the pandemic in Madrid, in other communities it has been done.” Sources from Moncloa have reported that the government plans to take command in the Community of Madrid if it fails to reach an agreement with the Madrid Executive to control the worsening of the coronavirus pandemic. The government would take refuge in
Article 65, which establishes that the declaration of coordinated actions in public health will correspond to the Ministry of Health in situations of urgent need. These disagreements between the administrations have led the spokesman of the Grupo Covid-19, Emilio Bouza, to resign 48 hours after being appointed. In a letter addressed to the heads of Health of both governments, Salvador Illa and Enrique Ruiz Escudero, Bouza refers to the disagreement between the administrations, of different political signs, as the reason for his resignation. Bouza, an expert in infectious diseases, was appointed spokesperson for the team to try to control the coronavirus pandemic in that region. In the letter, Bouza assures he accepted the assignment because those responsible for Health “confirmed to me their will for political harmony and their drive to work together to find a solution to the problem.” However, “the circumstances I have witnessed in the following two days… force me to resign and decline the offer,” said Bouza. This is another example of the lack of governmental pluralism and communication where blame shifting seems to be of higher importance than the public’s wellbeing.

The Horizontal Law establishes that the notifica tion of the AGM must include the list of those debtors who are prohibited from voting. If the members are no tified by letter in a sealed envelope this meets the re quirements. If the notification is by email, these should be individually sent and preferably with password ac cess. If there is a notice board, it should be in a closed box opened by key or code. The idea is to prevent ‘third parties’ from accessing the list.

WHEN the UK Furlough Scheme comes to an end on October 31, it will be replaced by the financially less attrac tive Job Support Scheme which will go some way to help those who are only able to work part time due to their employer’s economic situa tion. The attraction of the Fur lough Scheme was that it paid 80 per cent of the wages of workers who may otherwise have been laid off, up to a maximum of £2,500 (€2,750) per month. The new scheme which is set to last six months works for those employees who are brought back to work part time (where previously they were full time) with the em ployer paying for the hours
they work and the govern ment paying up to £697.92 (€767.71) per month. In theory, the government believes that those who are el igible (they have to work at least one third of their normal hours) will receive as much as 80 per cent of their monthly salary with this support. All businesses are able to apply to take part in the Job Support Scheme, even if they weren’t part of the Furlough Scheme and they will still ben efit from the £1,000 job reten tion bonus paid for each work er who returns to work from furlough. There is also an extension to support for the selfem ployed to ensure they at least receive a proportion of their average monthly income.

Currency outlook: No-deal Brexit risks take a chunk out of the pound, second wave fears boost the US dollar

Euro EUR/GBP: Up from £0.90 to £0.91 EUR/USD: Down from $1.18 to $1.16 After witnessing some bullish momen tum through August, the euro was pro pelled to a twoyear high at the very start of September. However, we have subsequently seen the euro shed these gains in recent weeks as Europe struggles to contain a ‘very serious’ coronavirus resurgence. EUR investors are particularly con cerned about how the second wave of in fections has impacted the Eurozone’s nascent economic recovery, with recent PMI figures indicating the bloc is at risk of slipping back into a recession. Unless European coronavirus rates im prove dramatically in the coming weeks, it seems inevitable that the euro will ex tend this downside as the economic re covery will be further tested by the intro duction of more stringent restrictions. Pound GBP/EUR: Down from €1.10 to €1.09 GBP/USD: Down from $1.31 to $1.27 The pound suffered a dramatic selloff over the past month, with the currency plunging to a new multimonth low as the risks of a nodeal Brexit rose significantly. This comes after the UK government tabled a bill seeking to override part of the EU Withdrawal Agreement, a move which potentially breaks international law and the EU warns could jeopardise a postBrexit trade deal.
Applying additional pressure to GBP exchange rates has also been the intro duction of new coronavirus restrictions in the UK, which Boris Johnson warned will likely remain in place for up to six months. Going forward, trade in the pound is likely to become increasingly choppy as the threat of a nodeal Brexit and the po tential introduction of stricter measures to control the coronavirus resurgence will stoke concerns over the UK’s eco nomic prospects. US Dollar USD/GBP: Up from £0.76 to £0.78 USD/EUR: Up from €0.84 to €0.85 The US dollar weakened at the start of September as demand for higherrisk cur rencies increased in response to upbeat global growth forecasts and optimism surrounding a coronavirus vaccine. However, the US dollar has found itself back in vogue in recent weeks, with de mand for the safehaven currency rising in response to souring market sentiment. This has been tied to fears of a second wave of coronavirus infections and their impact on global growth, as well as Brexit uncertainty and renewed USChina ten sions. Looking ahead, the ‘Greenback’ will likely continue to benefit from safe haven flows in the weeks to come. However, the upcoming US election re mains a key risk point and could limit the upside potential of the US dollar. LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I CANNOT help feeling that if many of those stopped by the police would only comply a little more with their requests, we would not see many of these ‘street’ situations become so confrontational. With a growing number of these occurrences showing on social media, it’s easy to see police can sometimes be a mite overzealous, but more often than not, it is the citizens involved that cause these situations to escalate; often with tragic results that could easily have been avoided. One posted recently showed a perfectly respectable looking African American woman standing near her car. The police approached and politely asked if the car was hers? There was no colour issue involved here, merely an enquiry as to the owner. When she subsequently affirmed it was indeed hers they asked for her ID. Instead of complying, she belligerently retorted ‘why’? The policeman reasonably and clearly then informed her that the car had been reported stolen and reiterated his re-

Just asking the question! quest to see her ID. The women immediately exploded. Screaming obscenities and jumping around she smashed her fists on the car and rushed about creating such general mayhem that finally a threatening crowd began to gather. Ultimately she had to be physically restrained and put into the police car, where she continued to scream that she was being arrested ‘ because she was black’ and that she ‘couldn’t breathe’ (sound familiar?) All this unpleasantness could have been avoided if she had simply produced her ID when requested. It’s not exactly rocket science. The same scenario also occurred in the (often omitted) first section of the filming in the George Floyd affair. Floyd actually escalated that confrontation by refusing to comply with the officers for almost a half an hour before the final tragic outcome. If he had simply got in the car when first instructed he would still be alive today. I also believe these attitudes are part of the reason for this latest Croydon tragedy. Through their prior experience of similar situations, the police, in an attempt to avoid these
dangerous circumstances getting out of control, including possible attack from baying bystanders, want to get perpetrators into the vans as quickly as possible. For this reason, I believe the body search of this suspect was rushed and resulted in the gun being overlooked, leading ultimately to the tragic murder of Officer Matt Ratana. These attitudes and the lack of respect for our police have to change. Simple compliance with police requests would go a long way to avoiding these unacceptable and often disastrous outcomes. I am actually writing this on Monday, three days since the officer’s murder. The police have had this man on their terrorism watch books for some time. Apparently he was in line for some kind of de radicalisation process - Ha! My point is however, they must therefore know who he is and most certainly have pictures of him. CONSULAR MATTERS REGULAR readers will know that I have been around the proverbial block a few times as a lawyer over the last 30 years and as Consul for Denmark. During all this time I have seen a considerable number of complaints about companies or people who claim to be lawyers, but who are not legally qualified to be called that and give advice under the name of advisers, consultants or some other name. I want to take this opportunity to write about the difference between lawyers (Abogados) and any other advisers or consultants here in Spain It is right to say that the EU regulation of free services, allows anyone to provide services in this area without asking for a degree or qualifications, but some of these professions, such as lawyers or doctors, are ruled by the law and have ethical codes which force the professionals who are practising to be registered at an official association. What you need to do when instructing a lawyer in Spain is to get the the Spanish Bar Association registration number in writing, that way you can check and be assured that you are being represented by a registered lawyer who is able to practise law in Spain. If you are given a fake number this is a criminal offence in Spain. Someone may have all the necessary certificates, but they may have been struck off by the Bar Asso-
ciation and it is necessary to check their number with the Bar Association. You may see lawyers here describing themselves as ‘Solicitors’ this is the closest translation of ‘Abogado’ here in Spain. A foreign European lawyer can be registered at a Bar Association in Spain but they can only give legal advice re the laws of their own home country. To give advice on Spanish law they must have a Spanish law degree or have completed a conversion process. Beware of Consultants, Legal Advisors and the like, lawyers have sat exams and are properly regulated to ensure that they give correct legal advice. It is advisable to put a little effort into choosing your own lawyer and completing your own due diligence so as to avoid a potential disaster further down the line. Thankfully cases of professional negligence are rare, but sadly they do exist here in Spain just like other countries.

GREATEST EDITOR CRUSADING newspaper editor, Sir Harold Evans, has died of heart failure aged 92. The British-American journalist forged a reputation as a trail blazer during his time as editor of the Sunday Times, most notably for his campaign for those who suffered birth defects as a result of the drug Thalidomide. SIR HAROLD EVANS: “Tried Those affected later to shed a little light.” received compensation from pharmaceutical companies on the back of his expose of the morning sickness drug. Speaking of his investigative work, Evans told The Independent in 2014, “All I tried to do - all I hoped to do - was to shed a little light. ANDREW NEIL is to leave the BBC as he has announced that after 25 years he will go with a “heavy heart” to pursue a role as the chairman of the all new TV HEAVY HEART: Leaving the BBC. channel GB news. Journalist Neil has spent 25 years with the BBC as one of the main anchors for its political content, hosting Daily Politics, The Week, Politics Live, and been the trusted face of election coverage over the years. The all-new GB News will be a 24-hour news channel which will be in direct competition with the BBC, ITV and Sky News.
Ibiza exit WAYNE LINEKER announced he was leaving Ibiza after the island continues to struggle with coronavirus restrictions and nightclub closures. Lineker, the owner of some of Ibiza’s most well-known venues, said he ‘couldn’t take it any more.’ He is leaving the party island saying he’s been ‘battered and beaten.’ Wayne owns an empire of bars and clubs on the island, shared the sobering message on Instagram. The brother of footballer Gary has now closed all venues in his Linekers Group for the rest of 2020, with all the group’s bars and clubs in mainland Spain, Tenerife and Greece closed.

When did you last tell a joke? MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man FOUR of us went out Friday for dinner in a proper fish and chip shop that obviously specialise in fish and, of course, chips. We were not there late - 7.30ish and we ordered. Now the clue is in the name - fish and chips. The fish was fine but for some reason they decided to serve up not very hot and scrappy chips. We obviously got the end of the last lot and the next lot of punters got the fresh chips. What I don’t understand is why? There has to be a bit of wastage. Don’t serve up the last crumbs and bits. Chuck them and keep the quality high. You can only do it once because I’m not going back any more. Now I know I’m getting old but the other thing that got on my nerves, and a few others in there too, was at one table was a couple. They were not kids and decided to spend the entire time between eating and drinking and waiting for the bill to what can only be described as ‘eating each oth-
er’s face.’ I don’t mind people showing a bit of affection but this was right over the top. Being the quiet unassuming person I am said, ‘Oi mate, get a room.’ This was greeted by a few laughs and nods of approval from the other patrons but totally ignored by the culprits who didn’t understand English. Oh well it was great to see our friends that we hadn’t seen for a while. Is it only me that looks at the kettle, shakes it and thinks hmm yeah, I’ll get two cups out of that but then doesn’t? I’m thinking of coming off all social media after watching the documentary The Social Dilemma. It is the scariest horror film I’ve ever seen and it’s not fiction. Find it and watch it and then tell me it’s not terrifying. I’m considering going back to just having my phone as a means of talking directly to people and not sending jokes but actually going back to telling them. When was the last time someone told you a joke? Facebook is nonsense. Twitter is OK as long as you don’t believe it all and all the others I can easily do without. What is so scary about this documentary is that it’s narrated by ex CEOs of all the big social media companies. Email: mikesenker@gmail.com

‘Remember, love conquers all’ Time to Say Goodbye GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY WHAT a difference a day makes, or in my case, seven months. When I began to write my weekly column, I was in a very different place to today. Firstly, Covid had arrived in Italy, but in Spain, we still watched the news, as if it w a s f a r e n o u g h a w a y, t o s t a y away. Face masks were something we never believed would become part of our daily wardrobe. One terribly wet and windy morning, I arrived at the EWN HQ, as a broken man. Having emerged from one hell of a break-up, I was due to meet with the editor. A morning of rare, memorable weather. One of the worst storms Spain had experienced in years, my mood suited the climate. Awaiting my meeting, I was approached by Michel Euesden, who was larger than life, and full of positivity. Sadly, I feel my conversation skill was as low as I was feeling. The night before, I learned that my partner had been cheating for months, I was numb. In fact, I was ashamed. I never got to meet the editor, instead, Michel saw beyond my Gucci, and into my soul. Without hesitation, she arranged coffee and biscuits - I never eat them, I ate two that morning. She told me she felt I was in pain, and ordered a taxi to return me to Los Monteros. Awaiting the taxi, I stood on the street in Fuengirola and I cried. I felt passers-by stare, but I cried. I believed I’d failed my interview. I felt so low. Lower than ever. However, my feelings were misplaced, as days later she called to say “let’s go!” Within weeks, Spain went into complete lockdown. My column, my only contact with the outside world. I sat on my winter terrace, staring at the wild sea, writing what was in my heart. Some days, I drank too much wine. Other days, I cried for the unknown. Most days, I just stared at my friend, the sea. I talk to the sea each day, as I believe she hears me. As the virus took over, I, like most of
DEAR READERS: Until we meet again. you, found ways to fill the days. I tended my garden. I experimented with recipes. I cleaned the pool. I volunteered to fetch fire wood. Anything, to try feel normal. As the saying goes, ‘this, too, shall pass.’ Soon, we were allowed to return to the streets. Soon, we were able to return to fitness. Soon, we could dine with friends. As this is my final instalment, for EWN, I recently read back over my columns. I hope my words, were of some entertainment, during these most extraordinary times. I’ve written for many major international newspapers and magazines, but I can hand on heart say, it has been my pleasure to work with EWN. A team, so friendly, and full of energy, I am most grateful for the opportunity. Today, my life has gone full circle, and I am madly in love, with all that true love has to offer. My future feels unreal. Out of nowhere, the person I was meant to be with all along, finally arrived. I believe that Michel’s kindness, led me out of the dark and into love. So, until we meet again, dear readers, always be strong, always be happy. Most of all, always be kind.

Bring in the guard THE British Army is on standby to help emergency ‘doorto-door’ coronavirus testing after infections spiked in Birmingham. It has been revealed that soldiers will be drafted in to help assist Birmingham Council’s ‘drop-and-collect’ door-to-door testing service. Council leader Brigid Jones told a meeting of the West Midlands Combined Authority on Friday that the plan will involve army units going to people’s homes in high-risk areas. Ms Jones said army staff will not be acting in a “military” capacity or carrying out “enforcement.” The troops will be there as “boots on the ground” bridging any gaps needed in services carried out normally by civilian staff.

MEMORIAL A FORMER classmate and friend of Anne Frank, Jacqueline van Maarssen, has laid the first brick at a monument in Amsterdam to the 102,000 victims of the Holocaust with each brick bearing the name of one of the victims. This concept was first promoted in 2006 and the 250metre labyrinth of corridors was designed by PolishAmerican architect and child of holocaust survivors Daniel Libeskind. It was only last year that the Dutch court confirmed consent for the project and work commenced in building the basic structure in June of this year. The first brick laid by Jacqueline van Maarssen carries the name of Dina Frankenhuis who was killed at the Sobibor concentration camp aged just 20 and the list of victims includes Jews and Gypsies from Sinti and Roma backgrounds.

The ferry contracts (a project that descended into chaos, delays and ended in tears) were later cancelled with costs to the taxpayer estimated as high as £56.6m. You really couldn’t make this up nice work if you can get it. Big business rewards incompetence with a fat salary for one day per week’s work. Perhaps Failing Grayling is advising the ports company on how to get government money for places that have no ports. The directors should be on high alert for rocks ahead! Basically, it proves you can be a gigantic failure and still come out laughing all the way to the bank.

A MADRID park is carpeted with Spanish flags in tribute to the victims of Covid-19 in the country. Volunteers planted the more than 50,000 flags in the Parque de Roma first thing on Sunday morning in an initiative which posts on Twitter say was organised by the ANVAC National Association for Coronavirus Victims initiative. Dozens of people also staged a minute’s silence among the flags at midday.
Clearly visible from the M-30 motorway and the Moratalez district of the city, the idea of the tribute is to remember all those who have lost their lives to the virus since the start of the pandemic, and according to several comments posted by far-right party Vox, to highlight what they claim is the “poor management” and “incompetence” of the national government in managing the health crisis.
Fuel-be-gone THE UK is set to become greener by 2030. This ongoing topic of whether or not petrol and diesel cars should be banned is a controversial one. The banning of petrol and diesel cars being sold was originally set for 2040. However, the government has now decided to bring it forward 10 years. Thereby, attempting to reach their goal of cutting down carbon emissions by 2050. As global warming worsens, countries have had to take initiative and properly address their actions. PM Boris Johnson disclosed that 2020 would be the year they need to focus on climate change and make smarter decisions.

REMOTE working is set to account for 50 per cent of all Spanish employment in just a decade as the coronavirus forces employers to reconsider their organisational structure. Fifty per cent of all Spanish employment could be considered for remote working by the year 2030 a collection of economic experts have advised. They advise that this figure will not be made up of half of the working population working solely from home, but rather from a much larger proportion working in a mix of home and office based working. This could see employees working a proportion of their week in a physical environment with their colleague and the remainder of their hours being conducted at home or from another remote location. The Council of Ministers has approved a new royal decree that will see remote work regulated for the first time in the country.

I live in North Yorkshire but the first news I get about this very important app is from EWN, an English news source based 1,200 away miles in Spain! My iPhone purchased in July came with the app pre-loaded but I have had to wait three months for some numpty in London to find the switch. Believe Dear Leapy, Unbelievable! I just read your feature in this week’s Euro Weekly. When I say unbelievable, I don’t mean what you say, but because apart from a minority of us on Twitter, you have said what we all know. The news, specifically Sky, but I am informed BBC and ITV, avoid any references to black people killing people in the UK. There is no condemnation of BLM violence or defacing property. There is no mention of the Asian grooming gangs raping and killing young white girls etc.

AT this point you would hope that we would be reading from a similar page when it comes to worries about catching the coronavirus and how we can be tested if need be. However, conflicting information seems to be circling still with regard to what to do if you should feel ill, symptoms and even the pressure on hospitals. Take Malaga Province, for example, EWN has had readers call in extremely ill and worried after calling the Covid hotline, but have been told they do not have enough symptoms to warrant a test. Some of these people have been elderly and with underlying health symptoms, but they have been told all they can do is quarantine as there is no space for them in certain hospitals or not enough tests available to go around. Others have been told they must not go to the emergency room if they suspect they have the virus. Does this point to misinformation or a push towards the hopes of creating a herd immunity? Herd immunity may sound like a positive direction but it would also seem to indicate ‘survival of the fittest’ pushing aside those who will not make it. Hospitalisations throughout April were at their highest and it was understandable that hospitals were unprepared and struggling. They dropped off again until recently but are still only a third of what they were during the early part of the virus. So, why would we be told there are no beds available? The Junta de Andalucia also publishes information on beds available which is conflicting with what the public is being told when contacting health centres. We read of different test centres in the UK and see pictures of people queuing round the block waiting to have a test. However, getting a test in Malaga seems an impossible task according to our readers. The health crisis has caused a constant need for updated information, a need for assurance and the knowledge that we will all be safe. So far the people who are supposed to be in charge of this cannot all agree and lives are being lost as they work it out.

Set Yourself Free From A skincare secret A Negative Mindset to fight the thought, in the hope it will disappear. It may do for a short period of time, but something will always happen to trigger the thought at a later day. The best way to deal with any negative thoughts is to embrace its presence, and discover what it is trying to teach you. Helpful thoughts vs Unhelpful thoughts Our ego likes to play tricks on us. When you think of a negative thought, your ego will create a scenario that you believe to be your reality. It feels as real as your physical being. You will then create a feeling and behaviour that matches the thought. For example, fear, anger, hurt or frustration. To enable you to understand if your thought is real, grab a pen and paper, and draw a
line down the middle. On the left side, write HELPFUL THOUGHTS, and on the right, write UNHELPFUL THOUGHTS. An example of helpful thoughts are, I am loved, I am a good parent, I am great at my job. An example of unhelpful thoughts are, I am fat, I am not good enough, I am a rubbish parent. Once you have written your lists, go back to your unhelpful thoughts, and next to each one, ask your self out loud, what physical evidence do I have to make these thoughts real. Once you establish there are no facts to this thought, choose to let it go. Next week, I will be continuing the set yourself free from a negative mindset sequence and will be writing about, understanding your triggers.

AGEING is one of our biggest beauty concerns and it can turn into the bane of our existence. With ageing comes antiageing products, designed to tackle wrinkles and plump the skin. But with so many products and confusing terms to deal with, it isn’t easy to manage this minefield. However, there is one product that has got everybody talking. From skincare experts and beauty fanatics to dermatologists, they are all loving retinol. Retinoids have been on the scene for many years, but it’s just now that most people are taking notice. Retinol has properties that are said to reverse signs of ageing and also act as a preventive measure. The ingredient derives from Vitamin A and is found in many creams and lotions. It promotes collagen production and exfoliates the outermost layer of skin. It changes the way aged cells behave, making them act like younger cells. This results in softening, improving the texture of the skin and minimising the look of fine lines. Retinol is also good for acne scars and sun damage and can brighten the skin, giving the look of a youthful complexion. Age spots can also be lightened with this acidic product as skin tone is evened out. That said, retinol may not be suitable for all skin types. If you suffer any conditions such as eczema or rosacea, a high strength product like this could cause further inflammation. To combat this, adding very small amounts to your moisturiser can introduce skin slowly to the ingredient, always making sure to use SPF afterwards. Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing and remember that we all know what it’s like to ‘not be okay’ even if most of us don’t talk about it. All those feelings are normal, we all go through this sometimes. Is it a fun place to be? Hell no. But it doesn’t last forever. Hold on, better days are on their way! Love. Dangers in your make-up bag For three days, the study’s 100 teenage participants stopped using their regular cosmetics and were provided with cosmetics labelled free of chemicals; including phthalates, parabens, triclosan and oxybenzone; all chemicals thought to affect changes of hormone levels within
young women. After just three days of not using their regular products, their dangerous chemical levels dropped by 45 per cent. Study co-author Maritza Cardenas, said: “One of the goals of our study was to create awareness among the participants of the chemicals found in everyday products, to help make people more conscious about what they’re using.”

A talented violinist
GIFTED award-winning Japanese violinist Lamaya started performing at the age of eight and has now performed all over the world playing both traditional wooden and electric violin. One is a European Enterprise award and the other a vegetarian choice award. Last week I wrote about Michele’s step-sister staying with us, she is a vegetarian. She is still here and every day I am coming up with something different, crikey knows how! Anyway, one of her favourite dishes that I have prepared at home were my simple cheese croquettes with a harissa dip.
In Spain we call them croquetas and in France I have always made a similar thing called Gougeres which are little choux pastry balls filled with cheese. Either way these are delicious and the Spanish method is pretty simple, in fact so simple that I asked myself … why would restaurants buy frozen croquetas when they are so simple to make? My mother who was called Joy, used to make them using all different types of cheeses, some blue and some with cheese and chillies. We all liked the recipe so much that I decided to use them as my little amuse de chef in the restaurant. As you know an amuse is a small course to get your taste buds tingling before all the other courses, it’s like a warm up! Since post lockdown I
have seen an increase in vegetarians in the restaurant. Actually, there is an increase in anything and everything slightly different and the more complex it is, the trendier it is! The other evening, we had a table that was gluten free, one of them a gluten free vegan, two were vegetarians, but one could eat fish but no shellfish, one was allergic to mushrooms and lactose but was vegetarian. The same evening, we had a table allergic to truffle with one that couldn’t eat meat, fish or dairy products, but didn’t want vegetarian. It turned out that she only ate chicken and salmon, neither of which I have on the menu so I have to shop for all these things and then prepare all day and then… guess what? They cancel!! As I walk around the ta-
bles at the end of the evening some people say… you look a bit tired! Hardly surprising! All of these diet complications means that I have to prepare so many different menus and it literally takes me all day. We ask people politely to book and rarely take a walk in, because I prepare the menu that they have chosen in the day. How it works is when you book online Michele calls and discusses it all and then she gives me a list of requirements which often looks like Beethoven’s 9th symphony! I can sympathise with Ludwig; his symphonies were so complex and his work so intense that he was deaf. I don’t think I am going deaf, but I may be going mad! I often wonder where else do they go to eat? Now I am not complaining because we need

Can you imagine these clients turning up to a Spanish restaurant and saying, one of us is gluten intolerant, one is allergic to tomatoes, potatoes and peppers, but is vegetarian and the other is a vegan but doesn’t eat mushrooms, oh and then I can’t eat fish or shellfish, no red meat and allergic to rice and frozen food!
If I stick to a vegetarian amuse it kind of suits everyone. If I make them using corn flour, use gluten free breadcrumbs it suits the gluten frees, but then it stops there because if I don’t use butter or milk, ultimately, I won’t be adding cheese! So hey, I will do a gluten free version that also suits the veggies, but won’t ever suit everyone, nothing possibly ever could!

Ode to Joy simple Home-made Gluten free croquetas Ingredients to make enough for 4 to 6 50g of corn flour ½ onion chopped finely 25 g butter 250 ml of milk 100 g of grated cheddar cheese 50 g of grated gruyere cheese 1 heaped tablespoon chopped parsley 1 tablespoon thick cream seasoning For coating 50 g of corn flour 2 eggs beaten 150 g of gluten free breadcrumbs Method Melt the butter in a saucepan on a low heat and add the onion and stir until translucent. Keep on a low heat and stir in the flour and gradually add the milk until you have a thick glossy sauce. Now add the cheeses, the parsley, the thick cream and season and stir well until the cheeses start to melt. Tip into a bowl and refrigerate for minimum of four hours or overnight. When the mix is cold you can now mould them into small balls or croquette shapes and then dip into the
flour, into the beaten eggs and finally into the breadcrumbs. You can now put them back in the fridge covered or even freeze and reserve. When required heat the deep fat fryer to 190ºC or use a saucepan with sunflower oil and a temperature gauge. Cook for about 1½ minutes until golden brown, serve with a spicy dip like the one below. Harissa dip 1 tablespoon of Harissa spices 150 ml of thick cream juice of 1 lemon or lime seasoning pinch of hot red pepper Method Heat the cream and reduce a little on the heat. Add the spices and stir well and allow to infuse on a low heat for a minimum of 30 minutes. Now add the pinch of hot red pepper seasoning and the lemon juice, taste and serve warm in a little dish. In the restaurant I serve the croquetas in little balls on a little Lebanese tabouleh with a little of the sauce served on the side as an amuse de chef.

WALKING FOOTBALL GETS COMPETITIVE AFTER last weekend’s successful mini tournament which took place at Calahonda amid strict ante Covid restrictions and regu-
lations, three clubs have met and decided to set up a mini league which will see the teams play each other once taking them up to the
Christmas break. Malaga (formerly Smiles) will put out three teams, Benahavis two, with Aston Viñuela one team. They
hope this will keep their players fit and also giving them match practice in a friendly but competitive manner, keeping the players ready for the new season scheduled to commence in January. Getting the Mini League underway are two teams who disappointed at last week’s tournament and will be all out to prove it was a settling in experience for them and they hope on Saturday October 3, Malaga ‘A’ v Aston Viñuela WFC, Kick off 1pm will be different.
Good news is that BAHA Irish Whiskey producers were so impressed with the organising and enthusiasm shown by the players and organisers that they offered to sponsor the mini league. It’s believed that BAHA will invest a three figure sum into the venture and donate a gift of a bottle of BAHA whiskey to each player of the league winning team. Meanwhile still on sponsorship the South of Spain Walking Football League are still in talks with several sponsors who are keen to sponsor the SSWFA league starting in the New Year. The Management Committee are in agreement that it is important to get what is best for the league while keeping in mind sponsors look for publicity by way of shirt logos, company names and media publicity. These all have to be taken into account by both parties
when negotiating a deal. SSWFL hope to make an announcement next week. Local businesses support the Walking Football League... The Walking Football League supports local businesses. The Cornish Bakehouse were so impressed with the preparation and organising of last Saturday’s tournament thay have agreed to sponsor the Cornish Bakehouse Invitational which will take place at the Finca on Saturday November 7 starting at 12 noon. They are donating a three figure sum and will provide a trophy and prize for the winners. Also providing local support are of course the Euro Weekly News, who are sponsoring the 2019 League Cup Final which was postponed due to Covid. It will now take place at the Finca on Saturday October 17 kick off 3pm.
