ERTE OR MUERTE
THE crippling effect of the Covid-19 crisis and a ‘lack of government organsation’ has united Costa Blanca’s businesses and workers’ network, with more than 200 vehicles taking part in a protest dubbed ‘ERTE o Muerte’ (ERTE or Death) on Tuesday, September 29. Demonstrators from across the region met at Aqualandia and drove through Benidorm, making their way to Terra Mitica where a manifesto was read, demanding ‘urgent measures’ to save the town and its workers. The manifesto demands, as one of the essential measures for the salvation of the tourism sector, ‘the extension of the ERTE for all sectors involved in the tourism industry.’ Organised by businesses and associations, the
protest received huge support, with hundreds of businesses, workers, entrepreneurs and self-employed from almost every sector taking part. “This demonstration is the consequence of what we consider to be a continuous nonsense, lack of organisation and programming that the government of Spain has shown during this health crisis,” said a spokesperson. Costa Blanca association, Aico, added: “Given the exclusion of our sectors in the extension of ERTEs, we demand extraordinary and urgent mea-

Stray Cat Sterilisation Sierra de Santa Pola Clean-Up THE Alicante Provincial Council has approved a €12,094.10 grant to the Torrevieja City Council for sterilisation treatments of cats without an owner. According to the Councillor for Animal Protection, Concha Sala, approximately 185 cats, half male and half female, will be sterilised.
Once all the necessary means are coordinated, sterilisation treatments will be carried out, in collaboration with veterinary clinics. The mayor has indicated that this action will try to alleviate the massive increase in the birth of cats which has occurred.
THE Gran Alacant Neighbourhood Association has collaborated with local organisations and public services to organise their clean-up first outings of the Sierra de Santa Pola, which are set for October 3 and 4, at 11am. Members of Santa Pola City Council, Nasimba Association, Santa Pola Local Police, Civil Protection and Urbaser will join volunteers to carry out cleaning of the area. Volunteers will be split into small groups with gloves and rubbish bags provided by Urbaser and distributed at the beginning of the route. CLEAN-UP: Volunteers to be split into groups.
San Fulgencio Fines THE introduction of €1,500 fines will be enforced by the San Fulgencio City Council if the owners of private lands in the municipality do not to keep their lots

to end on September 30, but at the time of going to press (Tuesday, September 29), the Spanish government approved the extension of its furlough scheme until January 31. The Council of Ministers has also extended the moratorium on rents and the suspension of evictions.

Well-being for Women IN a wonderful well-being initiative for women, four municipalities in southern Costa Blanca have organised personal empowerment and emotional strengthening groups. Algorfa, Jacarilla, Redován and Sun Miguel de Salinas are offering specialised psychologist guided groups in order to discover and use the resources that each woman attending has within them. The emotional support groups are shared spaces for learning, self-control, and emotional empowerment; the sessions guarantee privacy and confidentiality. With the support and supervision of a psychologist, the group

In an amazing opportunity for women within the region, they will also learn to improve self-esteem and self-confidence, to be more determined and decisive

HELP Helping Others HELP Office Manager, Joan Mitchell, presented local charity worker Celia Drinkall of ADAPT with a cheque for €3,000 to be used to support the local charity of El Samaritano (San Pedro). The ADAPT charity looks after families in the area who are in dire need of help, especially during the present pandemic. ADAPT supply regular food donations to the food bank of El Samaritano, however, because they have not been able to raise much in donation money since the beginning of the pandemic, they have depleted their funds since they have continued to operate. With current restrictions and uncertainty, and with little chance of fundraising events currently, the much-needed donation from HELP was viewed as ‘Heaven Sent.’ It was then the turn of HELP’s President Christine Baillie to present Donna Walsh, Publicity Officer and fundraiser for the cancer charity MABS, with another cheque for €3,000. MABS is another wonderful charity operating in the Costa Blanca area that has suffered due to the pandemic, with Covid-19 restrictions meaning they have been unable to carry out fundraising events as they normally would. HELP Murcia Mar Menor was pleased to be able to support other local charities this year from funds raised by its volunteers during the year 2019 and will continue to help others in the Murcia region in times of need.

Sustainable Mobility MURCIA continues to bet on sustainable mobility with its latest pilot launch, that will see €10,000 granted for the implementation of the 250 electric bicycles and the further €10,000 for the 500 electric scooters. The €20,000 subsidies for these personal mobility services will see the pilot project launched in October, with the project also set to be ‘free-floating,’ meaning a system without specific stations. Staff exploited AN agricultural manager has been arrested over 20 alleged sexual assaults of female temporary employees. The 58-yearold is suspected of forcing five of the women to have sexual relations with him in La Palma, Cartagena, or they would lose their jobs. The Guardia Civil confirmed on Monday, September 28 that it is not ruling out that there may be more victims.

A monographic book on the Pantheons of the Cemeter y of Los Remedios de Cartagena, made by the curator of the proposed exhibition, is also planned.
42 Tuna Cans TWO female thieves were apprehended in Rojales after Local Police officers caught them stealing alcohol, food and balloons from a large commercial centre, located on Avenida Justo Quesada in Rojales. Upon apprehension, officers surprisingly found that the two women had stolen six kilograms of cheese, 42 cans of tuna, 11 bottles of gin and whisky, and three balloon arches used at birthday parties.

Once a month the charity welcomes people to join them on a fun walk with, or without a dog, all in aid of raising money for the SAT animal charity in Dolores. These terrific loggerhead turtles were part of 21 turtles which were born a year ago, on the same Cala Arturo beach where they have been released.
Actress Arrives in Guardamar ACTRESS Vanesa Romero showed up in Guardamar to film a new show and enjoyed some local cuisine in the process. The new television programme ‘My Place in the World’ was being filmed in Guardamar and the municipality was graced with the presence of the wellknown Spanish actress.
The 42-year-old actress and model is best known for her roles as Ana in ‘Noone Lives Here’ and Raquel in ‘The One to Come.’ Filming of the actress took place in a few chosen locations including; the museum house of Mira Engineer, the castle, the Alfons XIII park, the Fonteta and the beach.
Charity Chest Wax A CHARITY chest wax has been organised by the Helping Each Other Charity in Playa Flamenca in order to raise money for several local charities. Money raised from the event, which takes place at the Sea View Cafe Bar at 2pm on October 9 in Playa Flamenca, will go towards the homeless, animal rescue centres, the local children’s homes, those who have suffered abuse and many more. As well as the charity chest wax, the Sea View Cafe Bar also has Coffee Morning Mondays, which raise funds for their chosen charities. Benejúzar Experience Library FOOD FUN: Local products and traditions on offer to help boost economy. THE Benejúzar Experience will return to Benejúzar this October and be full of economic, leisure and cultural promotion activities designed to showcase everything local, according to the mayor, Antonio Miguel López. The town hall of Benejúzar has presented its new edition of the Benejúzar Experience programme; an initiative to promote local traditions, commerce and cuisine. The event, which celebrates its fifth year, has adapted its programming to the new health situation and proposes numerous activities that will take place throughout the month. The Benejúzar Experience 2020 programme will begin on October 5 and 6 with activities within the local educational centres and looks set to contribute around €20,000 to the local economy.

Post-box THE Espinardo Library in Murcia is set to have a post-box installed outside so books that have been borrowed can be returned at any time, without entering the building. The installation of the outside post-box is designed to “improve the service provided in this centre,” according to the councillor for Urban Agenda and Open Government, Mercedes Bernabé.
School aid ALMOST 400 families of young schoolchildren in Albatera have been given financial help to ensure the children have everything they need for class. The Department of Education allocated €23,000 and in total 386 families have received support, € 59.50 per student. The purpose is “to be able to acquire school supplies, making it easier for families to return to school,” said Albatera mayor, José Antonio Berná.

BORIS BECKER: Is now facing a possible jail sentence. TENNIS legend Boris Becker looked anguished after he was told that he faces seven years in jail if found guilty of hiding assets including a Chelsea flat, two German properties and €1.44m (£1.2m) in cash when he filed for bankruptcy three years ago. Becker is accused of hiding a Chelsea property, bank accounts and company shares from
bankruptcy proceedings. The former world No 1 appeared to have bags under his eyes as he put his head in his hands while dining at Scott’s seafood restaurant in Mayfair, London. Troubled Becker was declared bankrupt in June 2017, and last year faced claims that he had failed to fully declare his estate to the Insolvency Service.

BREXIT for lorry drivers means they will need a Kent Access Passport (KAP) to join anticipated 7,000-long tailbacks for cross Channel ferries. Michael Gove has confirmed that a ‘de facto’ Brexit border is to be introduced for lorry drivers entering Kent to travel on to the EU. A VIRAL video on social media shows the dramatic moment that a Spanish winery in Villamalea in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula lost over 50,000 litres of red wine after one of their tanks burst. The dramatic footage shows a red river tumbling from the burst tank, gushing the wine onto the ground with a massive degree of force. The huge quantity of wine flooding outside the Vitivinos wineries, located in Villamalea, Albacete can be seen flowing through the winery and also shows the precise location of the burst tank. The Vitivinos winery was founded in 1969, with a production of 6,000,000 kilos of grapes and today has 1,570 hectares of vineyards.

BORIS’ PLEA THE UK Prime Minister has identified coronavirus as a “common foe” and called all nations to put aside their differences to unite in a global handling of the crisis. He has said that the bond between nations has been frayed as a result of the virus and urged world leaders to unify under a single strategy. Johnson, who made the speech in a video conference to the United Nations General Assembly, said, “the very notion of the international community looks tattered.” He added, “Never again must we wage 193 separate campaigns against the same enemy.” The Prime Minister set out a preventative strategy for the global handling of future pandemics including the commencement of zoonotic research labs across the globe and highlighted the need for a global alert system for future pandemics.

A CONVICTED rapist who attacked a woman a week after arriving in the UK has been jailed for seven years and eight months. Mihai Roban, 47, raped the 28-year-old woman as she was walking home from a bar in Finchley, north London, in January. Romanian national, Roban, of no fixed abode, was sentenced at Harrow Crown Court on Thursday, September 24. He will also be required to sign on the Sex Offenders Register for life. He pleaded guilty to one count of rape at Harrow Crown Court on July 17.

The illusionist, Kevin Quantum, seemed to be following strict social distancing guidelines elsewhere on the show, but what caused the complaints is when he ap-
peared to join fingers with both Ant McPartlin and Amanda Holden for his semi-final trick. Prior to his performance, Kevin had asked all the judges to use hand sanitiser, but, he later touched fingertips with Amanda and then did the same with Ant. Amanda then joined fingers with Alesha Dixon as David Walliams touched Ashley Banjo and Ant. The group stood apart during the performance, although still touching fingertips. Many viewers believed the measures just weren’t enough.

BARS in the House of Commons are not subject to the new rules for hospitality venues as they are designated ‘workplace canteens.’ Under the new rules, ‘workplace canteens may remain open where there is no practical alternative for staff at that workplace to obtain food.’ As well as being free to remain open beyond 10pm, the new, stricter rules regarding wearing face coverings and customers checking in at venues will also not apply to parliamentary bars. Visitors will furthermore not have to give their name and contact details when entering a Parliament bar. The report sparked widespread anger on social media, with many people saying it was “one rule for us, one rule for them.” Junior health minister Helen Whately said: “We in Parliament shouldn’t be sitting around late at night drinking - we’ve got a job to do when we’re there.”
MASK RAGE AN attack took place in a small shop in Gateshead, between a troublemaker and shop keeper. The attacker had been in the shop previously and was told by the shop keeper (who was not wearing a mask because of health issues) to wear his mask. The attacker, obviously infuriated by the request, asked why the shop keeper himself was excused of wearing his protective face covering. The incident was caught on video footage from the CCTV camera, showing the attacker

A ZOOKEEPER was left seriously injured in an attack by a gorilla at Madrid zoo on Sunday September 27. The zoo said the incident occurred at around 10am when the 46-year-old zookeeper entered the interior of the gorilla enclosure for the usual routine of breakfast, cleaning and preparing the facilities. The statement explains that in an internal area with a triple door the keeper came face-to-face with 29-year-old gorilla Malabo, who leapt on her. They transferred the injured zookeeper to the Clinico San Carlos hospital, where she is being treated for head and chest trauma, and multiple fractures to her thorax, SAMUR-Civil Protection duty chief Angel Casas revealed.

On Friday, September 25, Ayuso ruled out applying mobility restrictions in all districts of the capital and in municipalities with the highest rate of coronavirus infections, as recommended by the Ministry of Health, and extended the limitations to only eight new health zones, something Health Minister Salvador Illa disapproved of. Given this, Illa urged the capital to review its measures, “We have to take control of the pandemic in Madrid, in other communities it has been done.” Sources from Moncloa have reported that the government plans to take command in the Community of Madrid if it fails to reach an agreement with the Madrid Executive to control the worsening of the coronavirus pandemic. The government would take refuge in
Article 65, which establishes that the declaration of coordinated actions in public health will correspond to the Ministry of Health in situations of urgent need. These disagreements between the administrations have led the spokesman of the Grupo Covid-19, Emilio Bouza, to resign 48 hours after being appointed. In a letter addressed to the heads of Health of both governments, Salvador Illa and Enrique Ruiz Escudero, Bouza refers to the disagreement between the administrations, of different political signs, as the reason for his resignation. Bouza, an expert in infectious diseases, was appointed spokesperson for the team to try to control the coronavirus pandemic in that region. In the letter, Bouza assures he accepted the assignment because those responsible for Health “confirmed to me their will for political harmony and their drive to work together to find a solution to the problem.” However, “the circumstances I have witnessed in the following two days… force me to resign and decline the offer,” said Bouza. This is another example of the lack of governmental pluralism and communication, where blame shifting seems to be of higher importance than the public’s wellbeing.

Win for Uber A SUCCESSFUL legal fight was fought by Uber and their victory means they can continue to operate in London. Magistrates have found Uber to be ‘fit and proper’ and have allowed them to continue operating in London after the Transport for London (TfL) refused to renew Uber’s operating licence. TfL refused to renew the licence due to safety concerns and this is not the first time this has happened. This latest hearing follows a four-day hearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court earlier this month with issues between Uber and TfL going back as far as 2017. The decision made today by Deputy chief magistrate Tan Ikram will come as a welcome relief for Uber, although they were granted permission to continue operating in London during the appeal process.
STRANDED A CONSIDERABLY big shark was found on a beach in Guardamar del Segura, Alicante. The 270-kilo and threemetre long shark was seen struggling in the shallow waters. Many people tried to save the shark, trying to push it back into the water. The size of the animal was a massive variable that meant the shark could unfortunately not be saved. It has been stated by the mayor of the town, José Luis Sáez that the shark did not survive. Sharks are very easily worn out if they become stranded in shallow waters as their own weight exhausts them.

EUGENIO DELGADO, the man in custody for the murder of Manuela Chavero, still refuses to tell investigators exactly what happened, since his arrest on September 18. Delgado, from Monesterio, maintains that on that night he asked Manuela Chavero to go to his house to return a baby’s crib and that, once there, there was an argument in the hallway of the house, she accidentally slipped, hit her head and died. The Guardia Civil still holds the accused in their cells despite the fact that he has already been sentenced without bail for the alleged crimes of illegal detention and homicide. GOVERNMENT Ministers have been warned that Poppy Day parades across the UK are at risk of being cancelled due to lack of any coronavirus guidelines. Parade day organisers said they have been left “high and dry” as the government has failed to issue them any guidelines on Covid safety rules.

REMOTE working is set to account for 50 per cent of all Spanish employment in just a decade as the coronavirus forces employers to reconsider their organisational structure. Fifty per cent of all Spanish employment could be considered for remote working by the year 2030 a collection of economic experts have advised. They advise that this figure will not be made up of half of the working population working solely from home, but rather from a much larger proportion working in a mix of home and office based working. This could see employees working a proportion of their week in a physical environment with their colleague and the remainder of their hours being conducted at home or from another remote location. The Council of Ministers has approved a new royal decree that will see remote work regulated for the first time in the country.

Sixty pilots have so far taken voluntary redundancy and another 1,500 have agreed to part-time work. The union said that easyJet’s June estimate was that 727 pilots were at risk of redundancy.

CONSULAR MATTERS REGULAR readers will know that I have been around the proverbial block a few times as a lawyer over the last 30 years and as Consul for Denmark. During all this time I have seen a considerable number of complaints about companies or people who claim to be lawyers, but who are not legally qualified to be called that and give advice under the name of advisers, consultants or some other name. I want to take this opportunity to write about the difference between lawyers (Abogados) and any other advisers or consultants here in Spain It is right to say that the EU regulation of free services, allows anyone to provide services in this area without asking for a degree or qualifications, but some of these professions, such as lawyers or doctors, are ruled by the law and have ethical codes which force the professionals who are practising to be registered at an official association. A number of people have had

When instructing a lawyer to act on your behalf you need a properly registered lawyer in the Spanish Bar Association (Colegio de abogados). Someone who is registered at the Spanish Bar Association and has to follow the code of ethics and has indemnity insurance, just in case they give advice which proves to be negligent. What you need to do when instructing a lawyer in Spain is to get the the Spanish Bar Association registration number in writing, that way you can check and be assured that you are being represented by a registered lawyer who is able to practise law in Spain. If you are given a fake number this is a criminal offence in Spain. Someone may have all the necessary certificates, but they may have been struck off by the Bar Asso-

To give advice on Spanish law they must have a Spanish law degree or have completed a conversion process. Beware of Consultants, Legal Advisors and the like, lawyers have sat exams and are properly regulated to ensure that they give correct legal advice. It is advisable to put a little effort into choosing your own lawyer and completing your own due diligence so as to avoid a potential disaster further down the line. Thankfully cases of professional negligence are rare, but sadly they do exist here in Spain just like other countries.

Ibiza exit WAYNE LINEKER announced he was leaving Ibiza after the island continues to struggle with coronavirus restrictions and nightclub closures. Lineker, the owner of some of Ibiza’s most well-known venues, said he ‘couldn’t take it any more.’ He is leaving the party island saying he’s been ‘battered and beaten.’ Wayne owns an empire of bars and clubs on the island, shared the sobering message on Instagram. The brother of footballer Gary has now closed all venues in his Linekers Group for the rest of 2020, with all the group’s bars and clubs in mainland Spain, Tenerife and Greece closed.

Spain’s privacy YOU AND THE LAW laws prohibit the IN SPAIN publication of per sonal information to the general public. Now the fun starts. The Horizontal Law establishes that the notifica tion of the AGM must include the list of those debtors who are prohibited from voting. If the members are no tified by letter in a sealed envelope this meets the re quirements. If the notification is by email, these should be individually sent and preferably with password ac cess. If there is a notice board, it should be in a closed box opened by key or code. The idea is to prevent ‘third parties’ from accessing the list.

WHEN the UK Furlough Scheme comes to an end on October 31, it will be replaced by the financially less attrac tive Job Support Scheme which will go some way to help those who are only able to work part time due to their employer’s economic situa tion. The attraction of the Fur lough Scheme was that it paid 80 per cent of the wages of workers who may otherwise have been laid off, up to a maximum of £2,500 (€2,750) per month. The new scheme which is set to last six months works for those employees who are brought back to work part time (where previously they were full time) with the em ployer paying for the hours
they work and the govern ment paying up to £697.92 (€767.71) per month. In theory, the government believes that those who are el igible (they have to work at least one third of their normal hours) will receive as much as 80 per cent of their monthly salary with this support. All businesses are able to apply to take part in the Job Support Scheme, even if they weren’t part of the Furlough Scheme and they will still ben efit from the £1,000 job reten tion bonus paid for each work er who returns to work from furlough. There is also an extension to support for the selfem ployed to ensure they at least receive a proportion of their average monthly income.

Euro EUR/GBP: Up from £0.90 to £0.91 EUR/USD: Down from $1.18 to $1.16 After witnessing some bullish momen tum through August, the euro was pro pelled to a twoyear high at the very start of September. However, we have subsequently seen the euro shed these gains in recent weeks as Europe struggles to contain a ‘very serious’ coronavirus resurgence. EUR investors are particularly con cerned about how the second wave of in fections has impacted the Eurozone’s nascent economic recovery, with recent PMI figures indicating the bloc is at risk of slipping back into a recession. Unless European coronavirus rates im prove dramatically in the coming weeks, it seems inevitable that the euro will ex tend this downside as the economic re covery will be further tested by the intro duction of more stringent restrictions. Pound GBP/EUR: Down from €1.10 to €1.09 GBP/USD: Down from $1.31 to $1.27 The pound suffered a dramatic selloff over the past month, with the currency plunging to a new multimonth low as the risks of a nodeal Brexit rose significantly. This comes after the UK government tabled a bill seeking to override part of the EU Withdrawal Agreement, a move which potentially breaks international law and the EU warns could jeopardise a postBrexit trade deal.
Applying additional pressure to GBP exchange rates has also been the intro duction of new coronavirus restrictions in the UK, which Boris Johnson warned will likely remain in place for up to six months. Going forward, trade in the pound is likely to become increasingly choppy as the threat of a nodeal Brexit and the po tential introduction of stricter measures to control the coronavirus resurgence will stoke concerns over the UK’s eco nomic prospects. US Dollar USD/GBP: Up from £0.76 to £0.78 USD/EUR: Up from €0.84 to €0.85 The US dollar weakened at the start of September as demand for higherrisk cur rencies increased in response to upbeat global growth forecasts and optimism surrounding a coronavirus vaccine. However, the US dollar has found itself back in vogue in recent weeks, with de mand for the safehaven currency rising in response to souring market sentiment. This has been tied to fears of a second wave of coronavirus infections and their impact on global growth, as well as Brexit uncertainty and renewed USChina ten sions. Looking ahead, the ‘Greenback’ will likely continue to benefit from safe haven flows in the weeks to come. However, the upcoming US election re mains a key risk point and could limit the upside potential of the US dollar. LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I CANNOT help feeling that if many of those stopped by the police would only comply a little more with their requests, we would not see many of these ‘street’ situations become so confrontational. With a growing number of these occurrences showing on social media, it’s easy to see police can sometimes be a mite overzealous, but more often than not, it is the citizens involved that cause these situations to escalate; often with tragic results that could easily have been avoided. One posted recently showed a perfectly respectable looking African American woman standing near her car. The police approached and politely asked if the car was hers? There was no colour issue involved here, merely an enquiry as to the owner. When she subsequently affirmed it was indeed hers they asked for her ID. Instead of complying, she belligerently retorted ‘why’? The policeman reasonably and clearly then informed her that the car had been reported stolen and reiterated his re-
Just asking the question! quest to see her ID. The women immediately exploded. Screaming obscenities and jumping around she smashed her fists on the car and rushed about creating such general mayhem that finally a threatening crowd began to gather. Ultimately she had to be physically restrained and put into the police car, where she continued to scream that she was being arrested ‘ because she was black’ and that she ‘couldn’t breathe’ (sound familiar?) All this unpleasantness could have been avoided if she had simply produced her ID when requested. It’s not exactly rocket science. The same scenario also occurred in the (often omitted) first section of the filming in the George Floyd affair. Floyd actually escalated that confrontation by refusing to comply with the officers for almost a half an hour before the final tragic outcome. If he had simply got in the car when first instructed he would still be alive today. I also believe these attitudes are part of the reason for this latest Croydon tragedy. Through their prior experience of similar situations, the police, in an attempt to avoid these
dangerous circumstances getting out of control, including possible attack from baying bystanders, want to get perpetrators into the vans as quickly as possible. For this reason, I believe the body search of this suspect was rushed and resulted in the gun being overlooked, leading ultimately to the tragic murder of Officer Matt Ratana. These attitudes and the lack of respect for our police have to change. Simple compliance with police requests would go a long way to avoiding these unacceptable and often disastrous outcomes. I am actually writing this on Monday, three days since the officer’s murder. The police have had this man on their terrorism watch books for some time. Apparently he was in line for some kind of de radicalisation process - Ha! My point is however, they must therefore know who he is and most certainly have pictures of him. GREATEST EDITOR CRUSADING newspaper editor, Sir Harold Evans, has died of heart failure aged 92. The British-American journalist forged a reputation as a trail blazer during his time as editor of the Sunday Times, most notably for his campaign for those who suffered birth defects as a result of the drug Thalidomide. SIR HAROLD EVANS: “Tried Those affected later to shed a little light.” received compensation from pharmaceutical companies on the back of his expose of the morning sickness drug. Speaking of his investigative work, Evans told The Independent in 2014, “All I tried to do - all I hoped to do - was to shed a little light. And if that light grew weeds, we’d have to try and pull them up.” In a 2002 poll, Evans was voted the greatest newspaper editor of all time.
MEMORIAL A FORMER classmate and friend of Anne Frank, Jacqueline van Maarssen, has laid the first brick at a monument in Amsterdam to the 102,000 victims of the Holocaust with each brick bearing the name of one of the victims. This concept was first promoted in 2006 and the 250metre labyrinth of corridors was designed by PolishAmerican architect and child of holocaust survivors Daniel Libeskind. It was only last year that the Dutch court confirmed consent for the project and work commenced in building the basic structure in June of this year. The first brick laid by Jacqueline van Maarssen carries the name of Dina Frankenhuis who was killed at the Sobibor concentration camp aged just 20 and the list of victims includes Jews and Gypsies from Sinti and Roma backgrounds.

IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man FOUR of us went out Friday for dinner in a proper fish and chip shop that obviously specialise in fish and, of course, chips. We were not there late - 7.30ish and we ordered. Now the clue is in the name - fish and chips. The fish was fine but for some reason they decided to serve up not very hot and scrappy chips. We obviously got the end of the last lot and the next lot of punters got the fresh chips. What I don’t understand is why? There has to be a bit of wastage. Don’t serve up the last crumbs and bits. Chuck them and keep the quality high. You can only do it once because I’m not going back any more. Now I know I’m getting old but the other thing that got on my nerves, and a few others in there too, was at one table was a couple. They were not kids and decided to spend the entire time between eating and drinking and waiting for the bill to what can only be described as ‘eating each oth-
Bring in the guard THE British Army is on standby to help emergency ‘doorto-door’ coronavirus testing after infections spiked in Birmingham. It has been revealed that soldiers will be drafted in to help assist Birmingham Council’s ‘drop-and-collect’ door-to-door testing service. Council leader Brigid Jones told a meeting of the West Midlands Combined Authority on Friday that the plan will involve army units going to people’s homes in high-risk areas. Ms Jones said army staff will not be acting in a “military” capacity or carrying out “enforcement.” The troops will be there as “boots on the ground” bridging any gaps needed in services carried out normally by civilian staff.

Being the quiet unassuming person I am said, ‘Oi mate, get a room.’ This was greeted by a few laughs and nods of approval from the other patrons but totally ignored by the culprits who didn’t understand English. Oh well it was great to see our friends that we hadn’t seen for a while. Is it only me that looks at the kettle, shakes it and thinks hmm yeah, I’ll get two cups out of that but then doesn’t? I’m thinking of coming off all social media after watching the documentary The Social Dilemma. It is the scariest horror film I’ve ever seen and it’s not fiction. Find it and watch it and then tell me it’s not terrifying. I’m considering going back to just having my phone as a means of talking directly to people and not sending jokes but actually going back to telling them. When was the last time someone told you a joke? Facebook is nonsense. Twitter is OK as long as you don’t believe it all and all the others I can easily do without. A MADRID park is carpeted with Spanish flags in tribute to the victims of Covid-19 in the country. Volunteers planted the more than 50,000 flags in the Parque de Roma first thing on Sunday morning in an initiative which posts on Twitter say was organised by the ANVAC National Association for Coronavirus Victims initiative. Dozens of people also staged a minute’s silence among the flags at midday.
Clearly visible from the M-30 motorway and the Moratalez district of the city, the idea of the tribute is to remember all those who have lost their lives to the virus since the start of the pandemic, and according to several comments posted by far-right party Vox, to highlight what they claim is the “poor management” and “incompetence” of the national government in managing the health crisis.

WE AIM TO PLEASE Dear Euro Weekly News, In reference to the article about Britain Finally Launches its Covid-19 App - After Four Months Delay! Amazing! I live in North Yorkshire but the first news I get about this very important app is from EWN, an English news source based 1,200 away miles in Spain! My iPhone purchased in July came with the app pre-loaded but I have had to wait three months for some numpty in London to find the switch. I guess it’s my own fault for residing 220 miles north of Watford Gap, or it may be yet another example of ‘Bumbling Bojo strikes again.’ Seriously guys, many thanks and keep up the good work with your fine newspaper. Believe Dear Leapy, Unbelievable! I just read your feature in this week’s Euro Weekly. When I say unbelievable, I don’t mean what you say, but because apart from a minority of us on Twitter, you have said what we all know. The news, specifically Sky, but I am informed BBC and ITV, avoid any references to black people killing people in the UK. There is no condemnation of BLM violence or defacing property. There is no mention of the Asian grooming gangs raping and killing young white girls etc.

AT this point you would hope that we would be reading from a similar page when it comes to worries about catching the coronavirus and how we can be tested if need be. However, conflicting information seems to be circling still with regard to what to do if you should feel ill, symptoms and even the pressure on hospitals. Take Malaga Province, for example, EWN has had readers call in extremely ill and worried after calling the Covid hotline, but have been told they do not have enough symptoms to warrant a test. Some of these people have been elderly and with underlying health symptoms, but they have been told all they can do is quarantine as there is no space for them in certain hospitals or not enough tests available to go around. Others have been told they must not go to the emergency room if they suspect they have the virus. Does this point to misinformation or a push towards the hopes of creating a herd immunity? Herd immunity may sound like a positive direction but it would also seem to indicate ‘survival of the fittest’ pushing aside those who will not make it. Hospitalisations throughout April were at their highest and it was understandable that hospitals were unprepared and struggling. They dropped off again until recently but are still only a third of what they were during the early part of the virus. So, why would we be told there are no beds available? The Junta de Andalucia also publishes information on beds available which is conflicting with what the public is being told when contacting health centres. We read of different test centres in the UK and see pictures of people queuing round the block waiting to have a test. However, getting a test in Malaga seems an impossible task according to our readers. The health crisis has caused a constant need for updated information, a need for assurance and the knowledge that we will all be safe. So far the people who are supposed to be in charge of this cannot all agree and lives are being lost as they work it out.

Law and order Dear Euro Weekly News, The Spanish police are not bullies and are just keeping law and order, unlike the UK police who are taking the knee, with law and order on the backburner. I notice that the Chinese Communist Government who were warned by Dr Li of Covid-19 being contagious last November, did nothing to contain it, covered the truth up and acted far too late to stop its rapid worldwide spread. All we see is the media daily blaming Boris, Trump, Macron etc for the problems the virus has caused and never mention the CCG. DIONE LOCKYER LAST week, I spoke of the 60,000 thoughts we have in a day, how thoughts play a huge part in our lives, and I also shared a technique on how to listen to the thoughts that are constantly going around in your mind. Know you are aware of how to listen to your thoughts, I thought it would be a really good idea, to complete the whole mindset sequence for all of my readers. Acknowledging Your Thoughts Once you truly listen to your thoughts, it’s now the time to acknowledge them. It’s so easy to brush any form of negative thoughts, feelings and behaviours under the carpet, however, there will be a time when the carpet can no longer cover them! Your initial reaction may be

Set Yourself Free From New Healthy Milk A Negative Mindset to fight the thought, in the hope it will disappear. It may do for a short period of time, but something will always happen to trigger the thought at a later day. The best way to deal with any negative thoughts is to embrace its presence, and discover what it is trying to teach you. Helpful thoughts vs Unhelpful thoughts Our ego likes to play tricks on us. When you think of a negative thought, your ego will create a scenario that you believe to be your reality. It feels as real as your physical being. You will then create a feeling and behaviour that matches the thought. For example, fear, anger, hurt or frustration. To enable you to understand if your thought is real, grab a pen and paper, and draw a
line down the middle. On the left side, write HELPFUL THOUGHTS, and on the right, write UNHELPFUL THOUGHTS. An example of helpful thoughts are, I am loved, I am a good parent, I am great at my job. An example of unhelpful thoughts are, I am fat, I am not good enough, I am a rubbish parent. Once you have written your lists, go back to your unhelpful thoughts, and next to each one, ask your self out loud, what physical evidence do I have to make these thoughts real. Once you establish there are no facts to this thought, choose to let it go. Next week, I will be continuing the set yourself free from a negative mindset sequence and will be writing about, understanding your triggers.

IT’S never been easier to avoid dairy, thanks to an ever-expanding array of plant-based milk including, rice, soy, hemp, oat, coconut, almond, macadamia, hazelnut, cashew, the list goes on and on. However, some people can’t drink those milks due to nut or soy allergies. Some are against them because they aren’t good for the environment, with many recent environmental articles explaining the main issues associated with almond milk production are water use and pesticide use. Women may be concerned about the estrogen-like compounds in soy or the lack of vitamins and nutrients, like protein. So now we have the all-new ‘Pea-Milk.’ A non-dairy beverage that’s vegan, nut-free, soy-free, lactose-free and gluten-free. It’s better for the environment and has more protein and calcium than other alternative milks. Pea-milk doesn’t taste like peas, and it’s not made in the same way almond milk is. The process begins with harvesting yellow peas and milling them into flour. Then they separate the pea protein which is further purified and blended with water and other ingredients. Pea-milk has more calcium than dairy milk and it is fortified with 110 per cent of a consumer’s daily requirement for B12. Environmentally, peas have ‘a much lower water footprint than growing almonds and a much smaller carbon footprint than raising dairy cows.’

It’s okay not to be okay. Really MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED ROUGH patch, a bad day, a major setback. Sometimes, it seems like one thing goes wrong after another. And another, and another… Sometimes an unexpected challenge or an obstacle might come your way, and you find yourself stressing out, worrying and not knowing what to do. And, some days, you just have nothing. Zero motivation, no creativity. All of a sudden, you’re being inundated with self-doubt. You think you have to be strong all the time. You think you’re not allowed to cry, to admit that you’re not okay. It’s okay to not be okay. This is something that I’ve been struggling with for the last couple of months. I don’t know if things will ever go back to the way they used to be. What I do know, is that admitting that I’m not doing too well, even to myself, is never easy. Why?
Why do we always feel the need to be strong? Why do we feel guilty when taking a time-out? I was overwhelmed with such guilt. How can I sit here and cry and feel sorry for myself, when I have so much to be grateful for? There’s so much work I need to get done, I don’t see anyone else making excuses for themselves. Know that it’s okay. It’s okay to not be okay. Don’t resist feeling ‘bad’ just because it seems like you’re the only one who feels lonely, or lost or unmotivated - you’re not. Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing and remember that we all know what it’s like to ‘not be okay’ even if most of us don’t talk about it. All those feelings are normal, we all go through this sometimes. Is it a fun place to be? Hell no. But it doesn’t last forever. Hold on, better days are on their way! Love. Age spots can also be lightened with this acidic product as skin tone is evened out. That said, retinol may not be suitable for all skin types. If you suffer any conditions such as eczema or rosacea, a high strength product like this could cause further inflammation. To combat this, adding very small amounts to your moisturiser can introduce skin slowly to the ingredient, always making sure to use SPF afterwards. It is also encouraged that people without underlying skin conditions use small amounts when starting to use retinol. Beginning by applying twice a week and then gradually increasing the quantity if skin reacts well. Applying retinol is recommended no more than three times a week. As a
general rule, any retinoid creams or serums are to be used at night as they increase sensitivity to sunlight. Wearing SPF daily is essential when the ingredient is part of your skincare routine. And taking into account that it is a strong

product; users should not use more than a pea-sized amount. Younger people can also use retinol but they may not see as many benefits as someone with older skin. Never forgetting however, that prevention is always better than cure and this product will keep skin glowing.

Budgies for beginners IF you’re looking for something different to the typical furry, four-legged pet and birds have always been your thing, you might like to consider budgies. The small, colourful birds are quite easy to look after and make great pets for all ages, in fact they are the most widely domesticated bird in the world. Budgies can be found in a variety of colours and have varied personalities so look around for one that you click with. Cocks tend to be chirpier and easier to hand train and if you’re thinking of having a pair but don’t want them breeding, two cocks usually get on better than two hens. To keep them happy and healthy they need a complete diet so shop around for ready mixed food and check ingredients carefully. You can also give seed bars and honey balls as treats but never give your budgie avocado, lettuce, potato, sweets or chocolate as they can be harmful. The damaged or broken part of the nail needs to be carefully removed. ROAD TEST by Mark Slack IT may carry an iconic British badge, but these days MG is owned by Chinese car maker SAIC, and made in China too. Gone are the days of sporty two seaters in favour of more populist SUVs, a very smart hatchback, and what by tod a y ’s s t a n d a rd s a re bargain prices. A little while back I considered buying one of the early Chinese-made MGs as a second-hand runabout. Even examples with relatively low mileage and obvious careful owners showed the effects of bargain priced materials. The latest MG ZS is a different matter though. Style is subjective, but most who saw my test model men-

electric seat adjustment and six speaker sound system. On the road the ZS is a smooth and comfortable ride. On twisting roads there is minimal body roll and thanks to decent steering it handles especially well for an SUV. The six-speed automatic gearbox works fine at lower and cruising speed but it’s a different matter when you need to make rapid progress. The engine sounds quite busy and the acceleration errs on the lethargic side. That said in most situations the ZS performs well and is quiet and refined with particularly comfortable seating. MG’s new car profile is still quite low, but with vehicles like the XS it’s a brand that deserves more attention. After a bargain basement start the MG range now has quality, style and price on its side.

Its clear-cut, flowing design inspires at first glance and the sporty and powerful electric vehicle boasts an impressive acceleration. The ID.4 1ST comes with a price tag of €49,9500 while the ID.4 1ST Max is available for €59,9500. At home, the ID.4 1ST and ID.4 1ST Max can be charged with Volkswagen Naturstrom from renewable sources and along motorways, customers can charge with direct current supplied by suitable charging stations. Thanks to an output of 125 kW this is done speedily: it takes a mere 30 minutes to recharge the energy to cover the next 320 km (as per WLTP).

HYUNDAI has unveiled the new i30 N, which comes with an enhanced design, a new wet-type eight-speed dual clutch transmission (N DCT), and new advanced driver assistance and safety features. With a variety of new features to improve both every day and high-performance driving situations, the new i30 is truly a racetrack-capable everyday sports car. The i30 N’s design can be described in three words: performance, emotion, statement. Every design feature around the car has been developed with focus on dynamic performance: the new i30 N’s appearance shows that it was naturally born for the racetrack. ENHANCED: Developed with focus on dynamic performance. New i30 N customers can also select the Performance Package option. With the Performance Package, the engine delivers 280 PS. This is an increase of 5 PS from the original i30 N, and is available with both 6MT and N DCT. The maximum torque for the Performance Package variation has been increased by 39 Nm to 392 Nm. The 280 PS engine offers flat power, which ensures high responsiveness and improved acceleration for even more fun on the road or on the track. The i30 N keeps maximum torque between 1,950 and 4,600 RPM, and achieves maximum power at 5,200 RPM. This improves acceleration in the mid- and highspeed range and delivers a consistently high performance even in a variety of ambient conditions. In the bright sunshine, and with a stiff cool breeze, the Celts club marked the day dedicated to their captain Philip Mountford by taking part in their first major tournament on the new greens. Head groundskeeper, Bruno, deserves a special round of applause, as the new greens, which are only a couple of months old, were a serious improvement on the older surfaces. The overall winner was Kevin Fitzpatrick with the fantastic score of 43 points, which included a two shot penalty for playing from the wrong tee.
