ERTE OR MUERTE THE crippling effect of the Covid-19 crisis and a ‘lack of government organisation’ has united Benidorm’s businesses and workers’ network, with more than 200 vehicles taking part in a protest dubbed ‘ERTE o Muerte’ (ERTE or Death) on Tuesday, September 29. The demonstrators met at Aqualandia and drove through Benidorm, making their way to Terra Mitica where a manifesto was read, demanding ‘urgent measures’ to save the town and its workers. The manifesto de-
mands, as one of the essential measures for the salvation of the tourism sector, ‘the extension of the ERTE for all sectors involved in the tourism industry.’ Organised by businesses and associations, the protest received huge support, with hundreds of businesses, workers, entrepreneurs and self-employed from almost every sector taking part. “This demonstration is the consequence of what we consider to be a continuous nonsense, lack of organisation and programming that the gov-

She said that restrictions would be lifted region wide “once the experts recommend it.” But this offers no reassurance or solution to workers and businesses in urgent need of immediate support. *ERTE was brought into play after the State of Alarm in March, to pay workers’ wages and prevent mass sacking of staff as companies were forced to shut down as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. This could either be 70 per cent of a worker’s full pay if they were laid off, or 70 per cent of half the employee’s wages while they worked part-time. However, the self-employed and businesses must still pay social security contributions. The ERTE scheme was due to end on September
30, however at the time of going to print the government were in talks to extend until January 2021 and to confirm which business sectors will be included.
Happy event in Valencia SIX loggerhead turtles have hatched from a clutch of 85 eggs discovered on the Cullera (Valencia) beach. The nest, spotted by an angler, was transferred from the busy Cullera shore to El Saler national park and the six new arrivals will be kept under observation at the Fundacion Oceanografic in Valencia City. The nest is guarded by volunteers from Fundacion Xaloc who have watched the eggs for two months and will remain until they all hatch. Once viable the turtles will be released into the Mediterranean.

Young vandals PATROLLING late at night, Campello’s Local Police disturbed a break-in on hearing a burglar alarm at Enric Valor high school where there have been several recent reports of vandalism. They found three minors who had forced open a door and broken windows, detaining them before they could do further damage.

No problem COINCIDING with the end of the tourist season, analyses of Benidorm’s wastewater in recent weeks revealed scant traces of the coronavirus in the Rincon de Loix, Juzgados and La Cala, although its presence in the residential Poniente area was 10 times greater. The town hall commented that the incidence of the virus “was not worrying.”
Municipal help CAMPELLO’S Social Welfare department recently allocated €11,860 to 16 local families to offset the effects of the Covid-19 crisis. The town hall has now supplied €471,808 to approximately 600 families, split between direct aid, help with power bills and acquiring and distributing food to provide children with an adequate diet.
Cave visits DESPITE an atypical tourist season, reservations to visit the Cova Tallada located between Denia and Javea increased this year. In July 11,007 people visited the cave, where visits are restricted during the summer, compared with 7,655 in 2019. August also saw an increase with 11,258 reservations compared with last year’s 10,858.

BENIDORM Town Hall’s €214,000 contribution to the municipality’s principal fiestas will instead be used to help local families. This exceptional cash injection has the blessing of the Fiestas Commission and the Virgin del Sufragio Association. This includes €8,000 that the town hall donates each year to the fiestas in inland Beniarda, which cedes much-needed water to Benidorm.
“We are going to add another €286,000 from the town hall budget, injecting a total of €500,000 of municipal aid to alleviate the economic and social effects of the Covid-19 crisis,” said Benidorm’s mayor Toni Perez. This was the second time the town hall had increased the fund created to help Benidorm families who are experiencing difficulties caused by the health crisis, Perez added.
Covid cases in Moraira READER Shirley Young contacted the Euro Weekly News on Monday regarding four Covid-19 cases in Moraira. “A very popular Chinese restaurant in Moraira has four cases amongst the staff and is closed for approximately three weeks,” she told us. This had been announced on several Dining sites on Facebook and local radio station PureGold.Fm advising anyone who has been to the restaurant in Calle Pintor El Greco in the last week to isolate and get tested. “Just thought I’d pass it on in case not everyone listens to the radio or is on Facebook,” Shirley said.

2021 LA NUCIA Town Hall confirmed the dates for the municipality’s two local fiestas days in addition to Spain’s national holidays. Councillors from all parties voted in favour of the motion put forward by Fiestas councillor, Cristobal Llorens. The first, the San Vicente Ferrer holiday traditionally celebrated on Easter Monday will be held on April 12 at the Captivador chapel. Meanwhile, Tuesday August 17, has been chosen for the Dia de la Cabalgata (Parade Day) during the town’s August fiestas. Neither fiesta could be held this year, owing to the Covid-19 restrictions.

MUCHAMIEL’S Local Police notified a vet after officers found a fox that had been run over and was unconscious. The animal spent the night in the comfort of a local veterinary clinic and was released the following day in the same spot where it was found.
Swims delayed CAMPELLO’S covered municipal swimming pool was finished in 2017 but has yet to open to the public. Although the town recommenced the process last June, the inauguration has now been fixed for the start of next year, giving contractors time to put in their bids to run the pool on the town hall’s behalf.
BENISSA’S Centro Social Bernia reopens today, Thursday October 1. Rosa Lucia Pino, Senior Citizens’ councillor explained the town hall had delayed reopening until now, precisely because the elderly were more at risk from Covid19. As well as the usual anti-virus regulations, the centre’s public spaces will be aired every 15 minutes, there can be no yoga or dancing, playing cards must be disinfected after use and each will have paper towels and
hand sanitiser. Despite the possible risks, Pino pointed out that the elderly needed
to return little by little to their usual routine “so that their state of mind is not affected.”
Extortionist arrested A WELL-KNOWN martial arts expert was arrested in Denia, accused of extortion. National Police officers belonging to the Judicial Police criminal investigation unit launched an investigation after receiving a complaint that the accused man had intimidated and threatened him, demanding payment of a debt on behalf of a third party. National Police officers located other victims who were subjected to similar demands, including one who handed over €2,000 that was never deducted from the €6,000 he owed. Another victim needed medical treatment following an attack from the alleged extortionist, who has an extensive police record for similar offences.

CAMPELLO councillors from all parties voted to reactivate the Municipal Culture Committee. Created in 1993, the committee was formally constituted in 1996 and updated in 2012, but has not met since then. Compromis councillor Adriana Paredes, who proposed the motion, described access to culture as “a need and right” in modern society. The committee, will analyse the present situation of Campello’s culture and heritage and establish lines of action.

Not prevented THE firearms suspect who shot dead a police sergeant doing a Covid-19 check inside a police station was on Prevent’s ‘potential terror threat’ list. According to initial reports, the detained man was said to have been about to be assessed and have his temperature and details taken as part of new booking rules put in place due to the coronavirus pandemic after arriving at Croydon custody centre in South London. Somehow, the suspect
shot the officer point-blank. This took place at about 2.15am following the suspect’s arrest on suspicion of possessing ammunition. Officers and paramedics then
treated the officer - who was said to have been two months away from retirement - at the scene before he was taken to hospital where he later died.

During the coronavirus pandemic, sales of newspapers have seen a distinct drop with some news agencies clearly suffering under the strain. In March, at the beginning of the pandemic, national print sales saw a dramatic drop by 30 per cent. Furthermore, numerous local and free papers have closed with national press reporting distinct drops in advertising revenue. Shocking attack EIGHT police officers had petrol poured over them in Essex in a horrific scene of humanity at its worst. After being doused with petrol by a 28-year-old man, onlookers at the scene yelled “Light them up” in a disturbing event captured in an episode of the BBC documentary, Critical Incident, which aired on Monday September 28. The shocking incident, which happened in May last year,
occurred after a car chase resulted in a driver being arrested close to the Somercotes estate in Basildon. Several people were arrested for their involvement in the incident with 47-year-old Janine Justin, who wielded the hammer, being found guilty of possessing an offensive weapon. She was sentenced to nine months in prison, suspended for 18 months.

New police station OLIVA police station looks set to be completed after a 10-year delay. The Provincial Council of Valencia has approved the Investment Plan 2020-2021, which includes a grant of €696,000 which Oliva Council will earmark for the completion of the Local Police and Public Safety Building. This subsidy, added to the €440,000 contributed by
the local authority and the Generalitat, will make it possible to finish the works that have been suspended for almost 10 years. It’s hoped completion “will improve the conditions in which the Local Police work, with greater means and possibilities, as well as the improvement of the public service of citizen security.”

Challenge and Contest Wills in Spain OUR practice has been able to help numerous clients to successfully contest Wills in Spain, by establishing the invalidity of inheritance deeds signed here be-
fore a Spanish notary. For a lawyer to determine whether it is legally possible to help a client to contest a Will or inheritance, the following is essential:
1 - Determine the law applicable to the succession or inheritance. Although it is intended to challenge or try to annul a Will or inheritance in Spain, it will not always be achieved based on Spanish law. Therefore, it is necessary to determine first, which is the law applicable to the succession, according to the European Regulation 650/2012. Depending on the applicable law, the grounds for challenge may be different. Thus, for example, Spanish, French, Belgian law, provide for a series of compulsory and forced rights or hereditary reservation, in favour of children, spouses, etc. If these are not respected, the Will and inheritance could be challenged and annulled.

German law provides for a right of credit in favour of certain relatives, who can in some cases, claim against the heirs. two-thirds of the assets of the inheritance. According to article 808 of the Civil Code (CC). If the Will has not left sufficient provision in their favour, this omission, known as preterition, may result in the total or partial nullity of the Will. 3 - Possibility to Rescind and Cancel the inheritance deeds. On Friday, September 25, Ayuso ruled out applying mobility restrictions in all districts of the capital and in municipalities with the highest rate of coronavirus infections, as recommended by the Ministry of Health, and extended the limitations to only eight new health zones, something Health Minister Salvador Illa disapproved of. Given this, Illa urged the capital to review its measures, “We have to take control of the pandemic in Madrid, in other communities it has been done.” Sources from Moncloa have reported that the government plans to take command in the Community of Madrid if it fails to reach an agreement with the Madrid Executive to control the worsening of the coronavirus pandemic. The government would take refuge in
Article 65, which establishes that the declaration of coordinated actions in public health will correspond to the Ministry of Health in situations of urgent need. These disagreements between the administrations have led the spokesman of the Grupo Covid-19, Emilio Bouza, to resign 48 hours after being appointed. In a letter addressed to the heads of Health of both governments, Salvador Illa and Enrique Ruiz Escudero, Bouza refers to the disagreement between the administrations, of different political signs, as the reason for his resignation. Bouza, an expert in infectious diseases, was appointed spokesperson for the team to try to control the coronavirus pandemic in that region. In the letter, Bouza assures he accepted the assignment because those responsible for Health “confirmed to me their will for political harmony and their drive to work together to find a solution to the problem.” However, “the circumstances I have witnessed in the following two days… force me to resign and decline the offer,” said Bouza. This is another example of the lack of governmental pluralism and communication where blame shifting seems to be of higher importance than the public’s wellbeing.

COVID CANINE SNIFFED OUT: Covid-19 test. IF you are travelling into the Helsinki Airport you may receive more than just your passport check. A test project has begun at the airport in which one of two canines has been trained to detect the virus by sniffing the sweat of arriving passengers. This will hopefully see an end to sticks being shoved up your nose and instead replaced
with a dog sniffing your neck sweat! Passengers are being asked to volunteer their neck sweat, wiping it and leaving the swab in a box. The process continues with the sniffer dogs sniffing boxes containing different scents including the neck sweat box. In a process that takes one minute, if a positive result is detect-
ed, the person is sent to the airport’s health centre for a free virus test. University of Helsinki researcher Anna HielmBjörkman told The Washington Post, “Preliminary research suggests the doggy sniff test might be more effective at detecting coronavirus infections than the standard polymerase chain reaction or antibody test.”

EUGENIO DELGADO, the man in custody for the murder of Manuela Chavero, still refuses to tell investigators exactly what happened, since his arrest on September 18. Delgado, from Monesterio, maintains that on that night he asked Manuela Chavero to go to his house to return a baby’s crib and that, once there, there was an argument in the hallway of the house, she accidentally slipped, hit her head and died. The Guardia Civil still holds the accused in their cells despite the fact that he has already been sentenced without bail for the alleged crimes of illegal detention and homicide. Storm drains ready for storms HIDRAQUA, Alfaz’s domestic water and main drainage concessionary, is clearing the town’s storm drains ready for autumn rain. Operatives are removing leaves, silt, litter and anything else that could clog the gratings during a downpour. Cleaning the drains in this way is carried out each year, explained Alfaz’s Urban Development councillor Toni Such and his counterpart in Technical Services, Oscar Perez. Low-key non-fiestas ALTEA’S mayor Jaume Llinares met National Police and Guardia Civil chiefs as the fiestas’ period began. “We want to remind everyone that there are no official fiestas and we are asking everyone to avoid gatherings of more than 10 people,” Llinares said. The police and Guardia Civil would be stepping up controls with extra officers on duty, the mayor added. “This year we must have peaceful fiestas that comply with all anti-Covid health and safety regulations,” Llinares insisted.

ALFAZ’s sports centre recently hosted an athletics meeting for the visually impaired. More than 30 sportspeople attended the Absolute Athletics Control event organised by Spain’s Sports Federation for the Blind (FEDC), trying out their form to achieve qualifying times for the Tokyo Paralympics. There were several
record-holders amongst them, including Alicante’s Ivan Jose Cano, a 25-yearold who took bronze in the World Paralympics. He was accompanied in Alfaz by Xavier Porras, Sara Martinez, Txell Playa - also long-jumpers - as well as sprinters Lia Beel and Itxaso Munguira and the long-distance runner Maria del Carmen Paredes.
Help with childcare fees PARENTS may now apply for help towards nursery school fees for the Under-Threes, Altea’s Education councillor Vicenta Perez announced. This applies to the 2020-2021 school year and is available to children whose families are registered on Altea’s municipal padron. More protection for Albir quarry ALFAZ Town Hall is taking steps to improve access to the Albir quarry. Now disused, it has been turned into a green area that was allocated a Blue Flag this year by the Foundation for Educational Environment (FEE) which also awards the Blue Flags to beaches worldwide. Keen to retain the quarry’s coveted flag, the Environment and Technical Services have now installed a gate which will be opened and closed by the Local Police to limit access outside opening hours.

CalpeNEWS Vulture flies off-course CALPE Town Hall’s Animal Protection and Collection service, assisted by the Local Police, recently rescued a disorientated griffon vulture. A resident who spotted the bird on a roof terrace in Calle Benissa contacted the authorities who trapped it and kept it safely caged, ready for transferral to the Wildlife Recuperation Centre in Santa Faz. The bird possibly belongs to one of the area’s nature theme parks as they are generally sedentary and only young griffon vultures fly long distances.

Safer pavements WORK has now begun on remodelling pavements in Calpe’s Calle Corbeta where the roots of trees lining the street have damaged flagstones. Granite paving nearest the trunks has been removed and the area of soil surrounding each tree enlarged. The work, which is costing an estimated €31,477, is expected to take three months to complete and will make the pavements safer for pedestrians, pointed out Calpe mayor Ana Sala on visiting the Calle Corbeta project.

Better for some Give an opinion than others THE Teulada-Moraira Fishing Club’s last outing was to section B1 of the River Jucar. A number of fish were caught early on, with Jacques taking four carp in four casts. This did not last long before it went quiet and on a sticky day, fishing proved a hard task for some. Supermarket tussle THE Spanish media recently reported that Mas y Mas supermarket is claiming €13.8 million damages from Teulada-Moraira Town Hall. The supermarket maintained that the local government broke a 2004 agreement and, although the chain possessed all necessary permits and licences, these were later revoked.
The courts agreed that the supermarket should not have been built on its present site adjoining a stream and the Moraira establishment was obliged to close on September 23 last year. Now ‘much to its regret’ the company has no option but to demolish the Moraira building, prompting the €13.8 million compensation claim.

ENVIRONMENTALIST group Ecologistas en Acción Marina Alta, emailed Teulada-Moraira councillors, urging them to reconsider opposing plans to curb Tresmall fishing. The veto is included in the Environment Ministry’s plans for the Marina Alta’s protected marine zone (ZEC), which maintain that the traditional method damages the seabed. Ecologistas questioned local claims that Tresmall was sustainable, dubbing them “greenwashing,” and maintaining that Tresmall was responsible for the extinction of many marine species and threatened others, like cormorants.

Not money down the drain
ALL political parties on Teulada-Moraira Council voted in favour of investing €408,343 in main drainage. The money will come from developers and contractors applying for building licences for semi-detached houses in the town’s AIS-1 and AIS-2 zones, as town hall regulations require these fees to be used for public infrastructure. This payment has been obligatory since 2013 although none of the current coalition predecessors at Teulada-Moraira Town Hall ever used the cash to improve the sewage network.
Going into business TEULADA-MORAIRA Town Hall organised a course to encourage entrepreneurship and innovation amongst its young residents. Twelve people attended the workshop which finished last week and received financial support from the provincial council, the Diputacion. The course led by the Young Businessowners’ Association (Jovempa) gave at-
tendees an insight into the law and taxation as well as employment aspects including business plans, viability and funding. “With this course we hope we can provide our young people with enough background for them to take the first steps towards launching a business,” explained the town hall’s Youth councillor Aitor Llobell beforehand.

Boats mooring illegally
COASTGUARDS patrolling the Cabo de San Antonio marine reserve detected 1,307 illegally-moored boats last year, the majority in the summer. The marine reserve belongs to the Montgo national park and these figures were revealed during the annual meeting of the park’s board of governors. The coastguards admitted in 2019 there were only five ecological buoys protecting the seabed in this zone but more have been added. Additional marker buoys would ensure that boats had to remain at least 200 metres from the coast, they said, while calling on cooperation from boat-owners.

Montgo paths suggestion JAVEA’S mayor Jose Chulvi recently represented the municipality at a Montgo national park board meeting. Chulvi gave details of the problems caused by the state of the paths that affected not only Javea Town Hall but also the local population. Owing to the Montgo board’s General Uses Plan (PRUG), repairs have to be carried out with gravel, a raw material that deteriorates rapidly in rainy weather, the mayor explained. WHEN the UK Furlough Scheme comes to an end on October 31, it will be replaced by the financially less attrac tive Job Support Scheme which will go some way to help those who are only able to work part time due to their employer’s economic situa tion. The attraction of the Fur lough Scheme was that it paid 80 per cent of the wages of workers who may otherwise have been laid off, up to a maximum of £2,500 (€2,750) per month. Currency outlook: No-deal Brexit risks take a chunk out of the pound, second wave fears boost the US dollar

Euro EUR/GBP: Up from £0.90 to £0.91 EUR/USD: Down from $1.18 to $1.16 After witnessing some bullish momen tum through August, the euro was pro pelled to a twoyear high at the very start of September. However, we have subsequently seen the euro shed these gains in recent weeks as Europe struggles to contain a ‘very serious’ coronavirus resurgence. EUR investors are particularly con cerned about how the second wave of in fections has impacted the Eurozone’s nascent economic recovery, with recent PMI figures indicating the bloc is at risk of slipping back into a recession. Unless European coronavirus rates im prove dramatically in the coming weeks, it seems inevitable that the euro will ex tend this downside as the economic re covery will be further tested by the intro duction of more stringent restrictions. Pound GBP/EUR: Down from €1.10 to €1.09 GBP/USD: Down from $1.31 to $1.27 The pound suffered a dramatic selloff over the past month, with the currency plunging to a new multimonth low as the risks of a nodeal Brexit rose significantly. This comes after the UK government tabled a bill seeking to override part of the EU Withdrawal Agreement, a move which potentially breaks international law and the EU warns could jeopardise a postBrexit trade deal.
Applying additional pressure to GBP exchange rates has also been the intro duction of new coronavirus restrictions in the UK, which Boris Johnson warned will likely remain in place for up to six months. Going forward, trade in the pound is likely to become increasingly choppy as the threat of a nodeal Brexit and the po tential introduction of stricter measures to control the coronavirus resurgence will stoke concerns over the UK’s eco nomic prospects. US Dollar USD/GBP: Up from £0.76 to £0.78 USD/EUR: Up from €0.84 to €0.85 The US dollar weakened at the start of September as demand for higherrisk cur rencies increased in response to upbeat global growth forecasts and optimism surrounding a coronavirus vaccine. However, the US dollar has found itself back in vogue in recent weeks, with de mand for the safehaven currency rising in response to souring market sentiment. This has been tied to fears of a second wave of coronavirus infections and their impact on global growth, as well as Brexit uncertainty and renewed USChina ten sions. Looking ahead, the ‘Greenback’ will likely continue to benefit from safe haven flows in the weeks to come. However, the upcoming US election re mains a key risk point and could limit the upside potential of the US dollar. LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I CANNOT help feeling that if many of those stopped by the police would only comply a little more with their requests, we would not see many of these ‘street’ situations become so confrontational. With a growing number of these occurrences showing on social media, it’s easy to see police can sometimes be a mite overzealous, but more often than not, it is the citizens involved that cause these situations to escalate; often with tragic results that could easily have been avoided. One posted recently showed a perfectly respectable looking African American woman standing near her car. The police approached and politely asked if the car was hers? There was no colour issue involved here, merely an enquiry as to the owner. When she subsequently affirmed it was indeed hers they asked for her ID. Instead of complying, she belligerently retorted ‘why’? The policeman reasonably and clearly then informed her that the car had been reported stolen and reiterated his re-

Just asking the question! quest to see her ID. The women immediately exploded. Screaming obscenities and jumping around she smashed her fists on the car and rushed about creating such general mayhem that finally a threatening crowd began to gather. Ultimately she had to be physically restrained and put into the police car, where she continued to scream that she was being arrested ‘ because she was black’ and that she ‘couldn’t breathe’ (sound familiar?) All this unpleasantness could have been avoided if she had simply produced her ID when requested. It’s not exactly rocket science. The same scenario also occurred in the (often omitted) first section of the filming in the George Floyd affair. Floyd actually escalated that confrontation by refusing to comply with the officers for almost a half an hour before the final tragic outcome. If he had simply got in the car when first instructed he would still be alive today. I also believe these attitudes are part of the reason for this latest Croydon tragedy. Through their prior experience of similar situations, the police, in an attempt to avoid these
dangerous circumstances getting out of control, including possible attack from baying bystanders, want to get perpetrators into the vans as quickly as possible. For this reason, I believe the body search of this suspect was rushed and resulted in the gun being overlooked, leading ultimately to the tragic murder of Officer Matt Ratana. These attitudes and the lack of respect for our police have to change. Simple compliance with police requests would go a long way to avoiding these unacceptable and often disastrous outcomes. I am actually writing this on Monday, three days since the officer’s murder. The police have had this man on their terrorism watch books for some time. Apparently he was in line for some kind of de radicalisation process - Ha! My point is however, they must therefore know who he is and most certainly have pictures of him. ‘Remember, love conquers all’ Time to Say Goodbye GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY WHAT a difference a day makes, or in my case, seven months. When I began to write my weekly column, I was in a very different place to today. Firstly, Covid had arrived in Italy, but in Spain, we still watched the news, as if it w a s f a r e n o u g h a w a y, t o s t a y away. Face masks were something we never believed would become part of our daily wardrobe. One terribly wet and windy morning, I arrived at the EWN HQ, as a broken man. Having emerged from one hell of a break-up, I was due to meet with the editor. A morning of rare, memorable weather. One of the worst storms Spain had experienced in years, my mood suited the climate. Awaiting my meeting, I was approached by Michel Euesden, who was larger than life, and full of positivity. Sadly, I feel my conversation skill was as low as I was feeling. The night before, I learned that my partner had been cheating for months, I was numb. In fact, I was ashamed. I never got to meet the editor, instead, Michel saw beyond my Gucci, and into my soul. Without hesitation, she arranged coffee and biscuits - I never eat them, I ate two that morning. She told me she felt I was in pain, and ordered a taxi to return me to Los Monteros. Awaiting the taxi, I stood on the street in Fuengirola and I cried. I felt passers-by stare, but I cried. I believed I’d failed my interview. I felt so low. Lower than ever. However, my feelings were misplaced, as days later she called to say “let’s go!” Within weeks, Spain went into complete lockdown. My column, my only contact with the outside world. I sat on my winter terrace, staring at the wild sea, writing what was in my heart. Some days, I drank too much wine. Other days, I cried for the unknown. Most days, I just stared at my friend, the sea. I talk to the sea each day, as I believe she hears me. As the virus took over, I, like most of
DEAR READERS: Until we meet again. you, found ways to fill the days. I tended my garden. I experimented with recipes. I cleaned the pool. I volunteered to fetch fire wood. Anything, to try feel normal. As the saying goes, ‘this, too, shall pass.’ Soon, we were allowed to return to the streets. Soon, we were able to return to fitness. Soon, we could dine with friends. As this is my final instalment, for EWN, I recently read back over my columns. I hope my words, were of some entertainment, during these most extraordinary times. I’ve written for many major international newspapers and magazines, but I can hand on heart say, it has been my pleasure to work with EWN. A team, so friendly, and full of energy, I am most grateful for the opportunity. Today, my life has gone full circle, and I am madly in love, with all that true love has to offer. My future feels unreal. Out of nowhere, the person I was meant to be with all along, finally arrived. I believe that Michel’s kindness, led me out of the dark and into love. So, until we meet again, dear readers, always be strong, always be happy. Most of all, always be kind.

When did you last tell a joke? MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man FOUR of us went out Friday for dinner in a proper fish and chip shop that obviously specialise in fish and, of course, chips. We were not there late - 7.30ish and we ordered. Now the clue is in the name - fish and chips. The fish was fine but for some reason they decided to serve up not very hot and scrappy chips. We obviously got the end of the last lot and the next lot of punters got the fresh chips. What I don’t understand is why? There has to be a bit of wastage. Don’t serve up the last crumbs and bits. Chuck them and keep the quality high. You can only do it once because I’m not going back any more. Now I know I’m getting old but the other thing that got on my nerves, and a few others in there too, was at one table was a couple. They were not kids and decided to spend the entire time between eating and drinking and waiting for the bill to what can only be described as ‘eating each oth-
er’s face.’ I don’t mind people showing a bit of affection but this was right over the top. Being the quiet unassuming person I am said, ‘Oi mate, get a room.’ This was greeted by a few laughs and nods of approval from the other patrons but totally ignored by the culprits who didn’t understand English. Oh well it was great to see our friends that we hadn’t seen for a while. Is it only me that looks at the kettle, shakes it and thinks hmm yeah, I’ll get two cups out of that but then doesn’t? I’m thinking of coming off all social media after watching the documentary The Social Dilemma. It is the scariest horror film I’ve ever seen and it’s not fiction. Find it and watch it and then tell me it’s not terrifying. I’m considering going back to just having my phone as a means of talking directly to people and not sending jokes but actually going back to telling them. When was the last time someone told you a joke? Facebook is nonsense. Twitter is OK as long as you don’t believe it all and all the others I can easily do without. What is so scary about this documentary is that it’s narrated by ex CEOs of all the big social media companies. Email: mikesenker@gmail.com

WE AIM TO PLEASE Dear Euro Weekly News, In reference to the article about Britain Finally Launches its Covid-19 App - After Four Months Delay! Amazing! I live in North Yorkshire but the first news I get about this very important app is from EWN, an English news source based 1,200 away miles in Spain! My iPhone purchased in July came with the app pre-loaded but I have had to wait three months for some numpty in London to find the switch. I guess it’s my own fault for residing 220 miles north of Watford Gap, or it may be yet another example of ‘Bumbling Bojo strikes again.’ Seriously guys, many thanks and keep up the good work with your fine newspaper. Believe Dear Leapy, Unbelievable! I just read your feature in this week’s Euro Weekly. When I say unbelievable, I don’t mean what you say, but because apart from a minority of us on Twitter, you have said what we all know. The news, specifically Sky, but I am informed BBC and ITV, avoid any references to black people killing people in the UK. There is no condemnation of BLM violence or defacing property. There is no mention of the Asian grooming gangs raping and killing young white girls etc.

AT this point you would hope that we would be reading from a similar page when it comes to worries about catching the coronavirus and how we can be tested if need be. However, conflicting information seems to be circling still with regard to what to do if you should feel ill, symptoms and even the pressure on hospitals. Take Malaga Province, for example, EWN has had readers call in extremely ill and worried after calling the Covid hotline, but have been told they do not have enough symptoms to warrant a test. Some of these people have been elderly and with underlying health symptoms, but they have been told all they can do is quarantine as there is no space for them in certain hospitals or not enough tests available to go around. Others have been told they must not go to the emergency room if they suspect they have the virus. Does this point to misinformation or a push towards the hopes of creating a herd immunity? Herd immunity may sound like a positive direction but it would also seem to indicate ‘survival of the fittest’ pushing aside those who will not make it. Hospitalisations throughout April were at their highest and it was understandable that hospitals were unprepared and struggling. They dropped off again until recently but are still only a third of what they were during the early part of the virus. So, why would we be told there are no beds available? The Junta de Andalucia also publishes information on beds available which is conflicting with what the public is being told when contacting health centres. We read of different test centres in the UK and see pictures of people queuing round the block waiting to have a test. However, getting a test in Malaga seems an impossible task according to our readers. The health crisis has caused a constant need for updated information, a need for assurance and the knowledge that we will all be safe. So far the people who are supposed to be in charge of this cannot all agree and lives are being lost as they work it out.

Law and order Dear Euro Weekly News, The Spanish police are not bullies and are just keeping law and order, unlike the UK police who are taking the knee, with law and order on the backburner. I notice that the Chinese Communist Government who were warned by Dr Li of Covid-19 being contagious last November, did nothing to contain it, covered the truth up and acted far too late to stop its rapid worldwide spread. All we see is the media daily blaming Boris, Trump, Macron etc for the problems the virus has caused and never mention the CCG. ROBERT SHALLIS THE polar opposite to defeat, is of course, victory. To be triumphant and overcome is something that not only creates that exhilarating feeling of success, but allows one that sense of fulfilment that we have won and conquered, whatever aspect or area of our life we are working towards. So why is it, that we can witness so many amazing achievements by others and so often dismiss anything out of the ordinary for ourselves? You may be familiar with the quote. ‘You are your own worst enemy.’ You have possibly never really thought any more about that quote, other than the mere suggestion that it’s probably our own doing. So, how do we go from defeat to victory and join the ranks of victors in life? Firstly, we need to take the battle to ‘ourselves’ but therein lies the problem. Aristotle was attributed to saying “It is a great victory if we can conquer our self” and that’s exactly what we need to do first, before doing anything else. We are getting in our own way by creating reasons not to achieve. Draw a line through the word defeat and say goodbye to any thoughts that

may entertain it, defeat is no longer welcome and does not serve us. Secondly, look at the mental obstacles you put in your own way, obstacles that stop you from progressing, and remove them. Most of them are excuses to justify the belief that you cannot achieve something. I was once asked, what if a person’s obstacles were just too big? My reply, ‘simply walk around them.’ This was just an analogy of course but the point is, there is always another way to get to where you want, as opposed to falling at the first hurdle and giving up. When you start to believe you can really achieve something, focus on the end result, don’t be afraid, and by doing so, the so-called obstacles, excuses and reasons why you cannot do something, start to become subject to defeat. Once you decide to stand up, attack it and not retreat, you will discover the bully boy tactics will begin to dissipate. It is your choice, either you break or the obstacle breaks. It is your battle to win and yours alone. However, going forward, your newly
found belief in yourself will invariably reach a point where just as things are progressing nicely, that old enemy starts to get in the way again, which is where your biggest challenge is. You may find yourself in a negative thought pattern of ‘oh well, I gave it a good try’ or ‘I did my best.’ Therefore, resigning yourself to defeat. This is when everything seems to be against you. THE Spanish tenor Plácido Domingo has announced this Saturday that his public apologies for the accusations of sexual harassment of a score of women were taken out of context and has insisted that he has ‘never’ abused anyone. In an interview on the television programme, ‘La pr1mera pregunta,’ the tenor has retracted his words of last February in which he accepted responsibility for the alleged
cases of harassment. “It was not a mea culpa, my apology was published by an American newspaper along with false accusations that did not appear in the official report,” said the singer, who said he tried “to clear up the misunderstanding the next day but it was too late.” Plácido Domingo affirms that his apologies were taken out of context: “I have never abused anyone.”
Bring in the guard THE British Army is on standby to help emergency ‘doorto-door’ coronavirus testing after infections spiked in Birmingham. It has been revealed that soldiers will be drafted in to help assist Birmingham Council’s ‘drop-and-collect’ door-to-door testing service. Council leader Brigid Jones told a meeting of the West Midlands Combined Authority on Friday that the plan will involve army units going to people’s homes in high-risk areas. Ms Jones said army staff will not be acting in a “military” capacity or carrying out “enforcement.” The troops will be there as “boots on the ground” bridging any gaps needed in services carried out normally by civilian staff.

CONSULAR MATTERS REGULAR readers will know that I have been around the proverbial block a few times as a lawyer over the last 30 years and as Consul for Denmark. During all this time I have seen a considerable number of complaints about companies or people who claim to be lawyers, but who are not legally qualified to be called that and give advice under the name of advisers, consultants or some other name. I want to take this opportunity to write about the difference between lawyers (Abogados) and any other advisers or consultants here in Spain It is right to say that the EU regulation of free services, allows anyone to provide services in this area without asking for a degree or qualifications, but some of these professions, such as lawyers or doctors, are ruled by the law and have ethical codes which force the professionals who are practising to be registered at an official association. A number of people have had

Difference between lawyers (Abogados) and any other advisers or consultants here in Spain some bad experiences with so-called lawyers here in Spain, which in some cases could have been avoided if they had instructed properly registered Spanish lawyers. When instructing a lawyer to act on your behalf you need a properly registered lawyer in the Spanish Bar Association (Colegio de abogados). Someone who is registered at the Spanish Bar Association and has to follow the code of ethics and has indemnity insurance, just in case they give advice which proves to be negligent. What you need to do when instructing a lawyer in Spain is to get the the Spanish Bar Association registration number in writing, that way you can check and be assured that you are being represented by a registered lawyer who is able to practise law in Spain. If you are given a fake number this is a criminal offence in Spain. Someone may have all the necessary certificates, but they may have been struck off by the Bar Asso-
ciation and it is necessary to check their number with the Bar Association. You may see lawyers here describing themselves as ‘Solicitors’ this is the closest translation of ‘Abogado’ here in Spain. A foreign European lawyer can be registered at a Bar Association in Spain but they can only give legal advice re the laws of their own home country. To give advice on Spanish law they must have a Spanish law degree or have completed a conversion process. Beware of Consultants, Legal Advisors and the like, lawyers have sat exams and are properly regulated to ensure that they give correct legal advice. It is advisable to put a little effort into choosing your own lawyer and completing your own due diligence so as to avoid a potential disaster further down the line. Thankfully cases of professional negligence are rare, but sadly they do exist here in Spain just like other countries.

Ibiza exit WAYNE LINEKER announced he was leaving Ibiza after the island continues to struggle with coronavirus restrictions and nightclub closures. Lineker, the owner of some of Ibiza’s most well-known venues, said he ‘couldn’t take it any more.’ He is leaving the party island saying he’s been ‘battered and beaten.’ Wayne owns an empire of bars and clubs on the island, shared the sobering message on Instagram. MEMORIAL A FORMER classmate and friend of Anne Frank, Jacqueline van Maarssen, has laid the first brick at a monument in Amsterdam to the 102,000 victims of the Holocaust with each brick bearing the name of one of the victims. This concept was first promoted in 2006 and the 250metre labyrinth of corridors was designed by PolishAmerican architect and child of holocaust survivors Daniel Libeskind. It was only last year that the Dutch court confirmed consent for the project and work commenced in building the basic structure in June of this year. Set Yourself Free From A Negative Mindset Once you truly listen to your thoughts, it’s now the time to acknowledge them. It’s so easy to brush any form of negative thoughts, feelings and behaviours under the carpet, however, there will be a time when the carpet can no longer cover them! Your initial reaction may be to fight the thought, in the hope it will disappear. It may do for a short period of time, but something will always happen to trigger the thought at a later day. The best way to deal
with any negative thoughts is to embrace its presence, and discover what it is trying to teach you. Helpful thoughts vs Unhelpful thoughts Our ego likes to play tricks on us. When you think of a negative thought, your ego will create a scenario that you believe to be your reality. It feels as real as your physical being. You will then create a feeling and behaviour that matches the

thought. For example, fear, anger, hurt or frustration. To enable you to understand if your thought is real, grab a pen and paper, and draw a line down the middle. On the left side, write HELPFUL THOUGHTS, and on the right, write UNHELPFUL THOUGHTS. An example of helpful thoughts are, I am loved, I am a good parent, I am great at my job. An example of unhelpful thoughts are, I am fat, I am not good enough, I am a rubbish parent. Once you have written your lists, go back to your unhelpful thoughts, and next to each one, ask your self out loud, what physical evidence do I have to make these thoughts real. Once you establish there are no facts to this thought, choose to let it go. AGEING is one of our biggest beauty concerns and it can turn into the bane of our existence. With ageing comes antiageing products, designed to tackle wrinkles and plump the skin. But with so many products and confusing terms to deal with, it isn’t easy to manage this minefield. However, there is one product that has got everybody talking. From skincare experts and beauty fanatics to dermatologists, they are all loving retinol. Retinoids have been on the scene for many years, but it’s just now that most people are taking notice. Retinol has properties that are said to reverse signs of ageing and also act as a preventive measure. The ingredient derives from Vitamin A and is found in many creams and lotions. It promotes collagen production and exfoliates the outermost layer of skin. It changes the way aged cells behave, making them act like younger cells. This results in softening, improving the texture of the skin and minimising the look of fine lines. Retinol is also good for acne scars and sun damage and can brighten the skin, giving the look of a youthful complexion. Age spots can also be lightened with this acidic product as skin tone is evened out. That said, retinol may not be suitable for all skin types. If you suffer any conditions such as eczema or rosacea, a high strength product like this could cause further inflammation. To combat this, adding very small amounts to your moisturiser can introduce skin slowly to the ingredient, always making sure to use SPF afterwards. It is also encouraged that people without underlying skin conditions use small amounts when starting to use retinol. Beginning by applying twice a week and then gradually increasing the quantity if skin reacts well. Applying retinol is recommended no more than three times a week. As a general rule, any retinoid creams or serums are to be used at night as they increase sensitivity to sunlight. Wearing SPF daily is essential when the ingredient is part of your skincare routine. And taking into account that it is a strong product; users should not use more than a peasized amount. Younger people can also use retinol but they may not see as many benefits as someone with older skin. Never forgetting however, that prevention is always better than cure and this product will keep skin glowing.

CHEMICALS found in certain make-up products, shampoos and lotions could disrupt hormone levels in teenage girls. Scientists have warned that this disruption increases the risks of cancer and other illnesses later in life. Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, (USA) focused their study on teenage girls as they ‘use more personal care products per day than the average adult woman.’ For three days, the study’s 100

You think you’re not allowed to cry, to admit that you’re not okay. It’s okay to not be okay. This is something that I’ve been struggling with for the last couple of months. I don’t know if things will ever go back to the way they used to be. What I do know, is that admitting that I’m not doing too well, even to myself, is never easy. Why?
Why do we always feel the need to be strong? Why do we feel guilty when taking a time-out? I was overwhelmed with such guilt. How can I sit here and cry and feel sorry for myself, when I have so much to be grateful for? There’s so much work I need to get done, I don’t see anyone else making excuses for themselves. Know that it’s okay. It’s okay to not be okay. Don’t resist feeling ‘bad’ just because it seems like you’re the only one who feels lonely, or lost or unmotivated - you’re not. Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing and remember that we all know what it’s like to ‘not be okay’ even if most of us don’t talk about it. All those feelings are normal, we all go through this sometimes. Is it a fun place to be? Hell no. But it doesn’t last forever. Hold on, better days are on their way! Love. Budgies for beginners IF you’re looking for something different to the typical furry, four-legged pet and birds have always been your thing, you might like to consider budgies. ROAD TEST by Mark Slack IT may carry an iconic British badge, but these days MG is owned by Chinese car maker SAIC, and made in China too. Gone are the days of sporty two seaters in favour of more populist SUVs, a very smart hatchback, a n d w h a t b y t o d a y ’s standards are bargain prices. A little while back I considered buying one of the early Chinese-made MGs as a second-hand runabout. Even examples with relatively low mileage and obvious careful owners showed the effects of bargain priced materials. The latest MG ZS is a different matter though. Style is subjective, but most who saw my test model mentioned words like smart, stylish and quite a few admired the optional Battersea Blue paintwork.

Two engines are on offer, both petrol units, a 1.0-litre turbocharged three cylinder and a more conventional 1.5-litre four cylinder. They are mated to a six speed automatic transmission and a five speed manual respectively. Prices for the range start from €16,913 (£15,495) with my top of the range Exclusive model driving in at €22,749 (£20,840), with the 1.0-litre power unit, automatic gears and optional Battersea Blue paint finish. Standard fare includes
pretty much everything you would need including sat nav, cruise control, keyless entry and start, auto lights and wipers, heated front seats, leather upholstery, air conditioning, heated and powered door mirrors, 360 degree cameras, 10-inch touchscreen with Apple Car Play and Android Auto, electric seat adjustment and six speaker sound system. On the road the ZS is a smooth and comfortable ride. On twisting roads there is minimal body roll and thanks to decent steering it handles especially well for an SUV. The six-speed automatic gearbox works fine at lower and cruising speed but it’s a different mat-
ter when you need to make rapid progress. The engine sounds quite busy and the acceleration errs on the lethargic side. That said in most situations the ZS performs well and is quiet and refined with particularly comfortable seating. MG’s new car profile is still quite low, but with vehicles like the XS it’s a brand that deserves more attention. After a bargain basement start the MG range now has quality, style and price on its side.
