organising the week’s holiday. “Covid does not have to change all aspects of our lives,” the mayor declared. “Some can be altered with safety measures and self-protection.” Benidor m was open and it was secure, Perez assured the pensioners.

Instituto pupils quarantined TWENTY first-year pupils at Alfaz’s Instituto L’Arabi high school were quarantined after a classmate tested positive for Covid-19. Families received letters informing them that the children needed to remain at home following established procedures until September 25. The health centre would contact families for PCR tests on pupils considered to have been in close contact with the positive case, they were told. Parents were also advised to ring the designated telephone number if a quarantined child showed Covid-19 symptoms.

Turn down the AP-7 volume
FINESTRAT’S mayor Juan Francisco Perez assured Terra Marina residents that he shared their concerns regarding noise from the nearby AP-7 motorway. “Complaints have increased since the motorway reverted to the State, particularly about the noise from heavy
vehicles,” Perez said. “The town hall is joining the local population in asking the Ministry of Public Works to control the noise pollution and has contracted a service that will measure the levels,” he announced, promising to present their findings to the urbanisation’s residents.
Rotary vouchers provide fresh food THE Calpe Ifach Rotary Club has donated €24,000 in food vouchers to Caritas and the Red Cross since last May. On a recent visit to Calpe Town Hall, Calpe Ifach Rotary president Miguel de Lama stressed to Calpe mayor Ana Sala that the club will continue to make these donations enabling both charities to provide meat, fish and other perishables for families that are at risk of social exclusion. The club has also presented 350 pencil cases and materials to local parents’ associations (AMPAS), Caritas and the Red Cross to distribute amongst Calpe pupils. Bitter lemons BENIDORM’S National Police arrested five people of different nationalities aged between 17 and 54, accused of stealing at least 160 kilos of organically-grown lemons worth €500 from a Salto del Agua property last February. These they then sold on to a local greengrocer allegedly aware that they were stolen.

Canine rescue DENIA firemen freed a distressed German Shepherd trapped between railings and a wall of the Pou de la Muntanya school. The rescue was complicated as they had to remove a section of wall and a cypress tree before reaching dog which was taken to Denia’s animal shelter while the owners were traced.

Benidorm Plea AICO, Benidorm’s Independent Shopkeepers Association, expressed concern at shops’ future exclusion from the government’s ERTE furlough scheme. These worries were shared by the local hospitality, leisure and services industries who, like AICO, foresee 2,000 local businesses closing and countless self-employed ceasing activities. “The ERTES’ fourth extension is characterised by discord at the negotiating table and with the
government,” an AICO statement declared. “We have heard that the extension excludes shops, bars, restaurants and services but not hotels, travel agencies, aviation and theatres. These are the only sectors the government wishes to protect.” This demonstrated that the government “neither knows nor is familiar with” the commerce sector, AICO said. Nor did it do anything to get to know the business and jobs sector that depended on its

Rice the spice of regional life THE regional government recently launched its Cocina, Comparte, Vive (Cook, Share, Live) campaign coinciding with World Paella Day. Videos, advertisements and recipes promoting the region’s rice dishes also showcase the region’s mountains, coast and agriculture while featuring Paella Valenciana, Alicante’s typical Arroz a Banda and Paella de Montaña from Castellon. The three videos and publicity spots translated into English, German, Chinese and Russian focus on rice recipes not only demonstrating how to cook paella, but also showing how the rice is grown and processed, together with the sociable way that families and friends gather to enjoy
the meal together. The videos are distributed internationally by Turespaña Tourist Offices as well as the Valencian Community Tourism Board’s online channels. The video featuring the Alicante speciality Arroz a Banda was filmed near Javea’s Arenal beach. It shows chef Sonia Box and her brother Sergio demonstrating the recipe, who later sit to chat with actor Juan Echanove and the director of Mediterranea Gastronoma, Cuchita Lluch. The Paella Valenciana video was shot in the La Albufera national park famous for its freshwater lagoon despite its closeness to the sea - while the Castellon video is set in the inland agricultural area of Vall d’Alba.

Mountain rescue A FIRE BRIGADE Consortium helicopter rescued a mountain-biker from the top of Sierra Ferrer in inland Tarbena on Saturday. Unable to continue riding after experiencing fierce back and spinal pains, he received first aid before being winched up and flown to the San Vicente fire station and transferred to hospital.
What’s in a name
THE local Partido Popular criticsed the decision to change Villajoyosa’s official name to La Vila Joiosa. The proposal was approved at the last plenary council meeting by the PSOE-Compromis-Gent per La Vila coalition that controls the local government. Ciudadanos and the PP, with 10 councillors between them, opposed the motion which PP spokesman, Jaime Lloret described as “a betrayal of the wishes of many PSOE voters.” The PP was not going to admit defeat, he warned. A great amount of red tape would have to be untangled before the regional government approved the change of name.
Stay-at-home INSIDERS claimed that the corporate headquarters of the bank created by the Bankia-CaixaBank merger will be located in Valencia City. Caixabank moved from Barcelona to Valencia in 2017 during the upheavals following Catalonia’s unauthorised pro-independence referendum. To date Caixabank has held shareholders’ meetings in Valencia and announced financial results, but little more.
Big fines for poached fish OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil’s Nature Protection Unit, Seprona, intercepted 300 kilos of illicit tuna and whiting in Villajoyosa and Altea. The boat-owners involved now face fines of up to €60,000. The whiting, too immature to be legally fished, were confiscated at Altea harbour before they could be sold. Seprona impounded three bluefin tuna weighing 150 kilos in La Vila where fishermen, not authorised to fish the species, were completing a deal with a wholesaler.

Ospreys take off TWO of three osprey chicks released into the Pego-Oliva Marsh national park in June have left on their first migration. The third, which must have set off much earlier, was found dead near Galeras (Granada). The ospreys’ GPS trackers reveal that one of the two remaining birds left the marsh on September 8 and had arrived two days later in Morocco. The other departed some time later and was heading south, according to the tracker.

RED lights flashing on Montgo’s summit late at night were not SOS signals as initially feared. Two Denia firefighters climbed the 753-metre mountain to find 11 young people camping out and a fiesta in full swing. They were allowed to remain there as the descent would have been too hazardous to negotiate in the dark, but the Guardia Civil were waiting at the bottom of the path next day, ready to take details and charge them with illegal camping. VALENCIA’S Information and Emergency Centre (CICU) helped to save a 41-year-old Denia man’s life when he went into cardiac arrest after inhaling butane gas. ALTEA’S auxiliary health centre in the Old Town reopened on Monday, September 21. It closed after it was partially flooded during heavy rain at the beginning of September and the town hall took advantage by making other improvements. The town hall’s Health councillor, Jose Luis Leon Gascon, explained that repairs detected other issues apart from damage originally attributed to drainpipes and drains affected by the downpour. “Please do not throw wet wipes and other objects down the lavatories as these block sewage pipes and are responsible for problems that are very expensive to repair,” Leon Gascon said.

Flu jabs earlier this year LOCAL health centres will soon be contacting vulnerable residents with appointments for flu vaccinations. Ana Barcelo, who heads the regional government’s Health department, announced that the Generalitat hopes in this way to cover 75

Drone Drop-Off DRONE deliveries are set to get their own air corridor in a global first which may see your online shopping coming from the sky in the near future. Drone usage has seen a vast and dramatic increase in recent years and now the world’s very first air corridor for commercial drone traffic is set to open along a five mile stretch near Reading in the UK. The aerial highway will be opened in Berkshire for aerial delivery services to move into their next stage of development. The move, which has been banned until
recently, will see drone drop-off move towards becoming a daily sight. If successful, the move could quickly see this type of commercial corridor opening up cross the planet. A Fry-By at KFC VEGAN activists have had KFC chicken legs hurled at them while protesting against the exploitation of animals outside a butcher’s in Stoke-on-Trent. The protesters where left unharmed after the KFC chicken drive-by hurling. Nine demonstrators with a 10-metre banner, reading ‘friends not food,’ were standing in front of Wayne Walker Quality Meats in Longport, Stoke-on-Trent, when the car drove past firing chicken legs out of the window at the vegans. Friends of the attackers recorded the incident and police were called to the scene - however, the protest, in Davenport Road, was otherwise peaceful.

Holiday vouchers A MULTI-MILLION euro holiday voucher scheme is being launched in Valencia to reactivate tourism. President of the Generalitat, Ximo
Puig, has announced a new initiative, Viatge CV Voucher, which will offer discounts of up to 70 per cent on vacations in the region, which
could be as much as €600. The scheme will be rolled out next month and is available to anyone registered in the Valencian Community. The announcement was made during Puig’s speech at the General Policy Debate in Les Corts, in which he highlighted that the Consell will launch “a plan for the recovery of the Valencian Community as a safe tourist destination.” He said the tourism industry is “a sector so fundamental to our economy and needs a shock plan for its reactivation.” The plan will come into effect in mid-October and the total budget for the Tourism Recovery Plan is €196 million.

Castle Tumble YOUNG MAN: Rescued from difficult area. A YOUNG man has been injured after falling from the battlement of the Castillo de Los Templarios, in Ponferrada, León on Sunday, September 20. At 3.11am the young man was left unconscious in an area that was very difficult to access, therefore the help of the Ponferrada firefighters was required. At the scene, Sacyl staff treated a 25-year-old man who was then transferred in a mobile ICU to El Bierzo Hospital.
Unguarded gun ONE of Dominic Raab’s protection squad detectives has been suspended following a ‘security error.’ The detective in question has now been taken off duty as it was revealed he left behind his loaded gun on a flight that the Foreign Secretary of State had just exited from at Heathrow airport. The jet had just returned from Washington DC where Raab had been involved in talks with US leaders on Brexit and Northern Ireland. It is reported that a cleaner boarded the plane and spotted the loaded gun on the seat previously occupied by the detective and she immediately raised the alarm. Police rushed to the jet, but stood down once they realised it belonged to one of Mr Raab’s bodyguards.

Project Costa going from strength to strength PROJECT COSTA’S bid to feed and clothe the homeless on the Costa Blanca is going from strength to strength. Hot on the heels of Project Costa’s first distribution of food for the homeless in the Albir, Altea and Calpe areas, the team carried out a second drive in Benidorm last Friday, (September 18) and a third was due to take place in the same area on Tuesday night (September 22). “We are now finding out where the homeless are and going to them rather than pitching up in one spot, it seems to work better that way,” project founder, Arne Soeten told Euro Weekly News. “On our first outing, we managed to feed and give clothes to around a dozen people, now we know of around 24 people who need our help.” In addition to trying to feed as many homeless
people as possible, Project Costa also plans to offer a rehabilitation programme for up to three people at a time in a halfway home currently being refurbished in Benitachell. “Things are going well at
the halfway house. We are now doing the floor. We are laying a special coating to make it easier to keep clean.” Arne added: “The walls are being prepared and then we will fit the kitchen.

EXPATS LOSE ACCOUNTS UK BANKS: To close expat accounts.
TENS of thousands of British expats living in Europe are receiving notices from their UK banks that their accounts will be closed in weeks due to post-Brexit rules. Banks now have to decide which countries they want to continue operating in. Lloyds Bank confirmed it will pull services from Holland, Slovakia, Germany, Ireland, Italy and Portugal - a move that impacts 13,000 Brits. Barclays also confirmed bank and credit card customers living in the EU are being warned their accounts may be closed. Customers living in Spain, France and Belgium have already received notice
their Barclaycards will be cancelled on November 16. Coutts also confirmed it will be no longer serve customers based in the EU. A source explained: “In some cases, continuing to serve customers would be incredibly complex, extremely expensive and very time-consuming, and simply would not make economic sense. This is passporting - this is the reality of Brexit.� Under the current legislation, it will become illegal for UK banks to provide services to expat customers living in Europe after Britain leaves the EU. Boris Johnson has just a month left to strike a deal and 102 days before the transition period officially ends.

Wizz Air Expansion HUNGARIAN airline Wizz Air is setting its sights on Ryanair as it prepares an expansion into Italy. Ultra-low-cost airline Wizz Air already serves many cities across Europe, some North African and the Middle East. Now, they have revealed 10 new bases and an expansion into Italy which will begin from October 2020. In August the distinctive purple coloured airline, described as Europe’s greenest airline, announced new bases at Gatwick airport and Doncaster Sheffield in addition to its existing base at London Luton. Wizz Air is setting its sights on Ryanair and with the addition of Catania Airport in Italy, a war of attrition has begun.

MANUELA CHAVERO: The investigation of her disappearance has been a long experience. A SUSPECT has been arrested for the disappearance of Manuela Chavero. The ongoing investigation has been a long and exhaustive experience. The Guardia Civil are said to have arrested a man in connection with her disappearance and it is claimed that he has confessed to her disappearance and murder.
Chavero went missing in the early hours of the morning of July 5, 2016 from Monesterio and a man from this municipality has now been arrested for the crime. The 28-year-old suspect has admitted to murdering Chavero, 42, and was known to the victim as a close acquaintance and neighbour. The suspect has been
detained by the Guardia Civil in Zafra and the authorities are now investigating further with several searches being carried out, including one on his home. An anonymous letter was delivered to Chavero’s sister, Emilia Chavero, which was the passed to police. They have stated that this was the determining factor in pursuing the suspect.

Tax Allowances - As a resident you will receive a personal allowance for your Spanish income tax (from both savings and general income). These allowances include age allowance, married couple allowance and disability allowance. Since 2013, If you are a tax resident in Spain and own assets in excess of €50,000 outside of Spain, you are required to declare these assets under Spanish Law. An example of these assets includes: 1. Assets held in any bank account. 2. Property. 3. Shares. 4. Life insurance policies.
NON-RESIDENTS TAX If you own a property in Spain, you must pay two taxes: 1. IBI or council tax - This is a council tax that is based on the rateable value of your property (the open market annual rental value). 2. Notional income tax or rental income tax. Income tax is paid by non-residents who own a property whether rented out or not. NOTE - the Spanish tax office does not
send notifications of IBI tax addresses outside Spain. It is therefore advisable for a non-resident who has a property in Spain, to appoint a Fiscal Representative.

THE Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration is warning of one of the latest scams conning unsuspecting victims out of up to €300, this time through the Bizum app. An automated message claims to be calling from the government’s social security office offering support. As the automated conversation continues, creating alarm, the ‘caller’ begins to ask for personal data. Depending on the person, the conversation can change, opening a wider range to carry out the scam. The ‘false worker’ then promises a form of social aid is available - though nothing is further from the truth. A notification is then sent to the potential victim, and if accepted the scammer profits, known as ‘vishing.’

Scammers are taking full
advantage of the current crisis and period of uncertainty and confusion. Last week EWN reported a case of a factory employee who was placed on furlough in May. After four months of payment, she was made redundant, before becoming a target for email con artists posing as the HMRC.

SPAIN’S Second Deputy Prime Minister and secretary-general of Podemos, Pablo Iglesias, has defended the need to move towards a ‘New Republic.’ He suggests that new republic should recognise the plurinationality of Spain, with an organisation ‘more federal, more confederal’ and that moves away from centralism. “I believe that working and building alliances to advance to the republican horizon has to be one of the political tasks of Podemos in the coming years,” Iglesias said in his speech before his party. For Iglesias, this republican future is a “scenario for overcoming the territorial crisis that Spain is experiencing” and may represent, he said, “a common project that appeals to all the peoples of the State against the centralism” of the monarchy. However, and although Iglesias has not referred in his speech to the time frame of this new republic, the vice president considers it to be a medium or long-term project.
In the context of the crisis of the monarchy with the departure of King Juan Carlos and the investigation in the Supreme Court Prosecutor’s Office on the possible commissions paid by Saudi Arabia for the construction of the AVE to Mecca, Iglesias thus vindicates the republican vocation of Podemos compared to what he considers a monarchical PSOE party. “Those of us who are Republicans have to be able to understand the historical moment in which the Spanish monarchy is found and the model of state that this monarchy embodies. We have to have the courage and the audacity so that Spain advances towards the horizon of a new republic,” defended Iglesias. According to this project, the ‘New Republic’ should leave behind an economic model based on construction and tourism, which ‘has become the main obstacle to the economic development of Spain.’ “The monarchy no longer represents the business opportunities of the most dynamic business sectors. Those sectors have to be part of a new republican horizon that means economic modernisation, greater efficiency and competitive capacity,” said Iglesias. In his opinion, there is an ‘exhaustion’ of the historical role that the monarchy has played in Spain.

Can a UK-based adviser continue to support you from 2021? Four things to consider while living in Spain, make sure you check they can legally advise you after the transition period.
Even if there is a no-deal Brexit, citizens’ rights for UK nationals legally settled in Spain by 31 December 2020 are protected under the UKEU Withdrawal Agreement. However, there are no guarantees for financial services, which could affect whether you can continue to receive UK-based advice and services as an EU resident. Here are four key considerations. 1. The end of passporting Under today’s rules UK-based financial businesses can ‘passport’ out of the UK and into Europe. ‘Passporting’ is currently possible because the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is bound by the same rules and standards as other financial regulators in the EU. But once the UK leaves the EU, the regulation of financial activity and consumer protection may not continue to line up on both sides. Unless a mutual deal is agreed in time, the EU will stop all passporting arrangements for UK businesses from 1 January 2021.
2. The limits of UK advice

Some UK financial firms have put provisions in place to continue working in an EU/EEA country postBrexit, but others have not. We have already seen letters from major UK banks advising EU-based clients they will be withdrawing services and recommending they make alternative arrangements now. So if you wish to continue using a UK-based financial adviser/provider
If you hold savings and investments with an EU-based institution, from 2021 they may not accept instructions, such as top-ups, from a UK adviser. The financial regulator in France, for example, has already confirmed it will be illegal for French banks and insurance firms to do business with a provider who is not authorised in the country. We can expect similar positions to be taken by other EU regulators, which could clearly limit your planning opportunities. Also check if there will be practical challenges to keeping a UK-based adviser, such as having to return to the UK for meetings and paperwork requirements. How this would work if you need funds quickly or are unable to travel through illness or sudden travel restrictions?
3. The advantages of local knowledge Consider whether an adviser based in a different country is best placed to help you take advantage of opportunities available in Spain. Will they fully understand the intricacies of the Spanish tax regime and how it interacts with UK taxation? Will they have in-depth knowledge of local residence, domicile, tax, succession law and reporting rules? Who will foot the bill or face the consequences if they get things wrong? While UK-based advisers may be experts on the ins and outs of the UK system for residents there, it is unlikely that they have the same in-depth knowledge for Spain. 4. The suitability of UK planning Remember: financial planning tailored for a UK resident is unlikely to remain suitable once you become resident elsewhere. If you are holding on to UK savings
and investments, beware that they could potentially attract a higher tax bill once they cease to be EU/EEA assets from 2021. Meanwhile, Spanish residents have access to locally-compliant alternatives that can offer other advantages besides tax-efficiency - such as multi-currency and estate planning flexibility - so explore your options. As full Brexit draws nearer, it has never been more important to ensure your financial affairs are both compliant and suitable for your life in Spain. CALPE business-owners have until October 8 to apply for municipal subsidies offsetting the Covid-19 crisis. There are reductions of up to 30 per cent on rubbish-collection for businesses operating in Calpe on January 1, 2020, or those that opened between January 1 and March 13 and had to close during the State of Alarm. There are further grants for women entrepreneurs and owners of businesses that opened under three years ago. These include the rent for businesses premises, consultancy and advisory fees during the State of Alarm, utilities bills and capital expenditure. Just passing through THE Peñon de Ifac national park’s board of governors countered Calpe Town Hall claims of squatters in the Casal d’Ifac. The villa, bought by a previous regional government in 1999, is located inside the park. Restored at considerable expense for visiting dignitaries, it has never been occupied and is now in a state of disrepair. The park board admitted that tramps occasionally broke in, spending a night there before moving on, but insisted there were no permanent squatters.

Cormorants nest undisturbed in Javea JAVEA Town Hall questioned Environment ministry claims that tresmall trawling is damaging the seabed. On the contrary, Javea’s mayor Jose Chulvi maintained, the local fishing sector has always collaborated with all conservation measures. Their knowledge of the marine depths had also been of key importance when deciding the correct positioning of mooring buoys for pleasure craft, he said. Chulvi also countered Ministry claims that the cormorants inhabiting the municipality’s southern cliffs were affected by tresmall trawling, pointing to the increase in the number of nesting colonies over the last 20 years.
Anti-Covid kit THE Provincial Council, the Diputacion, supplied Javea Town Hall with 95 boxes containing 4,750 surgical face masks, plus 5,300 nitrile disposable gloves. These will be used by Social Services, said Rita Berruti, councillor responsible for the department.
School sports programme suspended JAVEA state schools’ extracurricular sports programme Xabia Esports Educa has been suspended for this term. The town hall’s Sports councillor Alberto Tur explained that the decision based on the Covid-19 pandemic was taken jointly by school managers and the town hall’s Education and Sports departments. The situation will be reviewed after Christmas with a view to restarting the programme if the Covid situation permits. Temporary respite for businesses
RESPONDING to businessowners’ requests, the town hall modified the times when Plaza Celestino Pons opens to traffic. Vehicles may currently use the area surrounding the municipal market from 8am until 2pm, when the bollards will go up. The town hall intends eventually to pedestrianise the entire plaza, but this is impractical at present owing to the presence of heavy machinery and materials that are needed for the ongoing restoration of the San Bartolome church.

Spanish bank merger WHEN first mooted it appeared that there would be a merger between Spain’s third and fourth largest banks, Caixa and Bankia but the reality now appears that Caixa will retain its trad ing name whilst Bankia will slowly disappear. Caixa had previously taken over Barclays Spanish retail business and now will become the largest bank in Spain with total assets of more than €600 billion. With much larger operations out side of the country, both Santander and BBVA will however remain as
numbers one and two in worth. Bankia has had a chequered history being created from the amalgama tion of a number of savings banks, pushed into stock market flotation using what has now been recognised as false figures, seeing its chairman Rodrigo Rato disgraced and impris oned and finally being taken over by the Spanish taxpayer. The new business has been agreed in principle by the two banks but there is quite a way to go, including completion of due diligence, approval by Bankia shareholders and then,

probably in the first quarter of 2021 it will be reviewed by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transfor mation, the National Commission of Markets and Competition. With 6,000 branches, the two banks will look to rationalise and there is little doubt that where there is cross over, closures and subsequent job losses will occur, which may not sit well with the current Spanish gov ernment, although it currently holds 62 per cent of Bankia shares and would be offered a seat on the new bank’s board.

NORMALLY at the forefront of profitable Spanish companies, the Inditex Group, has taken a huge hit from the Covid19 pandemic with a 37 per cent sales drop to €8 billion in its first 2020 six month financial report. Sales for the same period last year were €12.8 billion which shows the dramatic af fect that the lockdown had on the company’s turnover and they are showing a €198 mil lion loss compared to a €1.5 billion profit. Each one of its brands, Zara, Pull & Bear, Massimo Dutti, Bershka, Stradivarius, Oysho and Uterqüe experienced re ductions in sales ranging from 25 per cent to 50 per cent, but executive chairman Pablo Isla said that he is “particularly
pleased with our online sales growth, which demonstrates the critical importance of our strategy to integrate store and online. This is a cornerstone of our unique business model.” The good news continues with the fact that after re opening the majority of its stores (98 per cent) the sec ond quarter of the year saw it return to profit with a positive contribution of €214 million and its ‘piggy bank’ amassed €6.5 billion so it certainly looks safe and sound for the future. Despite the shortterm loss es, the company continues to support charitable causes and during that period donated clothing through UNHCR to refugees in Rwanda as part of the humanitarian relief effort there.
Increased production ALTHOUGH Nissan will go ahead with the closure of its vehicle production in Barcelona at the end of this year, management believe that workers should in crease production whilst they still have jobs. Reports suggest that cur rent production is as low as 40 vehicles a day compared to 160 produced daily prior to the lockdown and that the October target is to reach at least 128 vehicles every day until final closure. There is a current de mand from Japan for new vehicles and Spain can help meet those needs.
Business rate holiday SADIQ KHAN, mayor of Lon don in the company of many London based busi ness owners has appealed to the British government to extend the business rates holiday in order to try to cut the number of possi ble job losses that could oc cur. With a spike in Covid19 cases and street crack downs expected shortly, Khan argues that there could be another 50,000 job losses if the holiday isn’t extended beyond next March. This plea was made as the government deadline for applications concerning business rate reform ar rived.

tion of profits to staff. The chief of Britain’s leading depart ment store and the upmarket Waitrose supermarket said the closure of stores during the national lockdown and the purchase of lowprofit products like toi let paper had hit overall trading.

£50bn missing
LESS CASH: Latest £20 polymer bank note. THE National Audit Office (NAO) in the UK is responsible for reviewing all areas of government expenditure and to publish its findings without reference to political opinion. Its latest review concerned the question of cash in society and how it is managed as there are no less than five different or ganisations who each have their own role, but it appears that there is no single controlling voice. The Treasury, the Bank of Eng land, the Royal Mint, the Finan cial Conduct Authority (FCA) and the Payments Systems Regulator (PSR) are all involved and it should be recognised that differ
ent public bodies may well have different needs and expecta tions. As far as bank notes are con cerned, these are produced by a public company De La Rue under contract to the Bank of England and this business is a commercial activity with agreed rates for pro duction of the notes, the quanti ties being set by the Bank with input from the Treasury. Currently the NAO believes that there are bank notes valued at £50 billion (€55 billion) which are in circulation but are not be ing used for any form of transac tion and noone knows for sure where this money has gone. The use of cash in transac tions is, however, in decline: 10 years ago, cash was used in six
Dismal forecast THE Bank of Spain has now downgraded its economic forecast due to the rise in Covid-19 infections and doesn’t expect Spain’s economy to return to pre-pandemic levels until 2023 at the earliest assuming there is an effective vaccine introduced by the middle of next year. The bank previously forecast that Spain’s gross domestic product (GDP) would be reduced between 9.2 per cent and 11.6 per cent this year, but it is now more pessimistic, expecting the fall to be in the region of 10.5 per cent to 12.6 per cent.

Negative interest ALTHOUGH the Bank of England decided to leave the headline interest rate at 0.1 per cent during the September meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee, minutes show that it is certainly considering a negative interest rate policy for the future.
Pension age THERE was bad news for women when the UK Court of Appeal refused to accept that the rise in women’s pension age was either unlawful discrimination or a breach of human rights and although the judges felt sympathy, they couldn’t overturn Parliament’s decision.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT THROUGHOUT this whole surge of racial diversity and BLM furore, one fact is becoming abundantly clear; namely the hatred that vast numbers of black people have for their white counterparts! It is also becoming blatantly obvious, that the majority of the white population have been sailing on completely oblivious to this deep resentment that has obviously been festering in the hearts of people of colour for generations. Some of the postings on social media have been extremely disquieting to say the least - and the divide is now growing at an alarming rate. Unfortunately hatred breeds hatred and due to these revelations, droves of white people, who have never before had a discriminatory bone in their body are becoming totally confused. Many, who have actually revered black artists and sports people over the years, are now becoming painfully aware that they themselves are in fact intensely disliked merely for the colour of their skin. Subsequently they have begun to devel-

Basically all the appeasement and patronising attitudes of the left, (particularly the BBC) are driving a wedge between black and white which is raising the levels of enmity to very dangerous levels indeed. This latest ‘Racial Bias Guide,’ published by the BBC is a typical case in point. Some of its directives are utterly ridiculous. Their sports commentators have been instructed to find other descriptions for ‘pace’ and ‘power’ when describing the play of black football players. Apparently the use of these words is ‘racial stereotyping’ and implies that the talent of these players is down to physical strength and not intelligence. Have you ever heard such utter poppycock in your life? Picture the scene. Commentator. ‘Now, here comes Sterling speeding down the wing; the intelligence in those legs is simply inspiring. His level of mental ability is standing him in great stead and he shows an intimate understanding of the geometrics of the field, plus his boot striking the ball at exactly the right angle gives one a clear inkling that his knowledge of
the theory of Pythagoras is firmly entrenched in his psyche.’ Give us a break, much of the talent of any footballer lies in his pace and power. True they also need a certain level of intelligence and understanding of the game, but Einsteins they certainly don’t have to be. Describing a black footballer as having ‘pace and power’ is actually a great compliment. To interpret it as being a form of racism is utterly ridiculous and shows just what a waste of space these leftie bigots are. Their ability to stir up racism where it never before existed is dangerous in the extreme and if the whole sorry exercise leads to violence and conflict, the blame lies firmly at their doorstep. Personally I think they should be brought to book for racial incitement. They are causing more division and racial tension than has ever been perceived before. King’s praise PRIDE: Felipe VI shares his ‘affection and admiration.’
THE King of Spain, Felipe VI, on Sunday, September 20, presided over the Spanish Legion’s centenay event at the Álvarez de Sotomayor Base in Almeria. The day is emblematic as it coincides with the date on which the first legionary enlisted. Accompanied by the Minister of Defence, Margarita Robles and Chief of the Army General Staff, Francisco Javier Varela, King Felipe VI reviewed the troop after paying his honours on the centenary, that he created. The centenary is celebrated under the motto of ‘Cien años de valor, el valor de cien años,’ which translates as, ‘One hundred years of value, the value of one hundred years.’ During the event King Felipe VI announced his ‘affection’ and ‘admiration’ to the members of the Legion. Margarita Robles, congratulated the Legion with a message through social networks in which she showed her ‘pride’ and highlighted “the work they do to make a country stronger and stronger every day, every day better.” She added, “You are brave, generous and loyal, you are a source of pride for all of Spain.” She also conveyed “her love and support” and indicated that they have “a present and a future that we all want be the best.”

DEAR Euro Weekly News, I was so utterly dismayed to read your Costa del Sol front cover piece about the bar owners in Fuengirola. Eight bars abandoned within months!? That is both shocking and sad. Many people come out here to live a dream. They bring their life savings, they see a gap in the market and try and do something to make themselves and others happy and then they get this massive kick in the face. The coast survives upon entertainment and music. Fining bars for playing music? What on earth has that got to do with Covid. Unfortunately, the controversial question needs to be asked, were any of these Spanish bars or are they only the expat bars. Whether they agree or not I have seen and heard of victimisation by the police against foreigners, bars included. I understand that they are trying to look after their own, but they are destroying people’s livelihoods and dreams as they do so. Surely there is enough room for them all. RECENT pictures have emerged of Wuhan, they show dance parties and pool parties, something we would never even contemplate taking part in just now. They also show something else even more important, laughs and smiles. Two things that can brighten up anyone’s day but are very sadly missing from the streets of the UK, Spain, Italy etc at the moment. How has Wuhan done it? Can’t we learn from them? They have seen a total U-turn to the start of the pandemic there, when they were the epicentre of what was to become a global virus. Life was abruptly put on hold and their own world shut down. Hospitals were overflowing with patients, and a rapidly increasing death toll and uncertainty about when the lockdown would end spread fear and panic. What they live now reflects a strategic victory in fighting the virus. Wuhan has not seen a local infection since May, anything else has been imported but tackled swiftly. There is still some need for caution, gatherings and mass celebrations are not encouraged, but masks have been abandoned and people are happy to be back with their families. In Wuhan, residents faced a 76-day quarantine lockdown during the worst of the outbreak. Now many have who survived are ready to rid themselves of that trauma and move on. Maybe it is just bravado or turning a blind eye and getting on with their lives. Whatever they are doing it is working. Infections have dropped and people are again smiling. Something we hope we can all experience very soon.

Again, the ‘ch’ is pronounced as in ‘loch.’ Then there is the manufacturer Braun, correctly pronounced like the English ‘brown’ and not as ‘brawn.’ I blame the Americans, who still insist on spelling ‘Adolf’ as ‘Adolph’ and pronouncing it ‘Aye-dolf,’ and whose citizens with German ancestors cannot pronounce their own surnames properly. Are they ashamed of them? Thus we get ‘Schwortsengger’ when it should be pronounced ‘Shwaartsenegger,’ ‘Winesteen,’ when it should be pronounced ‘Vineshtine,’ and ‘Shwortskopf’ when it should be ‘Schwaartskopf.’ Still, given that Americans are still struggling to speak decent English after over 200 years, decent German will elude them for another 500, methinks. A very fishy tale
TRY as I might, it’s an image I simply cannot get out of my head: a guy, in a blind panic, running out of the sea, pursued by ravenous fish snapping at him with very sharp teeth. I regret not being there with a camera when the incident occurred and became the talk of Benidorm. Cackling hysterically, a local who saw the whole thing told me what had happened. Just after Covid-19 lockdowns in Spain were eased, folk began noticing an astonishing number of fish coming very close into shore. One geezer decided to make the most of it by wading into the ocean to net himself a fish supper. This, by the way, is illegal in Spain unless you have a regional fishing licence. The fish were having none of it, and scarpered. Reckoning he needed something tasty to lure them back, he returned with nosh obtained from a nearby takeaway. That more than did the trick. Fish of all sizes came at him in such numbers that he was forced to flee. After hearing the tale, I began researching the effect of Covid-19 lockdowns on marine life, and was gratified

And the presence of mammals such as killer whales, dolphins and seals have been recorded in areas where they hadn’t been seen in decades. A recent Bloomberg report said that signs of marine life recovering include reports of turtles nesting in Brazil during that country’s lockdown - and the same could happen along the
Mediterranean coast later this year when breeding season arrives. While it’s a crying shame that Venice, along with other cities, has seen tourism collapse, its famous canals and lagoon are clearer now than they have been in decades, and people are able to see marine life they never imagined existed. The grim news is that, since lockdowns have eased, litter louts have resumed dumping hundred of tons of plastic into seas and lakes, and already the negative effects are being seen in areas that have since re-opened. This is a sad indication of how little regard most humans have for our beautiful planet. Faith-heads make the ludicrous claim that some heavenly creator gave Homo sapiens dominion over all living things. Ask them why he/she/it stupidly chose the most destructive of all apes to safeguard the earth, and meaningless waffle is the best you’ll ever get. • My thanks to my resident Freethinker artist Shell Fisher for the illustration. £500 Quarantine STAY SAFE: And be paid for it too. THE UK government are set to launch a scheme offering low-income earners in England £500 in exchange for agreeing to self-isolate. The scheme will begin in October around the same time that English residents face fines of up to £10,000 fines for breaking quarantine. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said that the idea is to protect those that may be most vulnerable as Covid cases grow and point towards a second wave. Many British residents won’t be eligible for such schemes and will wait in hope for others to be announced through local government support.
There are certain criteria you must meet including being in receipt of Universal Credit, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income Support, incomebased Employment and Support Allowance, Housing Benefit and/or Pension Credit or Working Tax Credit. You must also have been asked to self-quarantine by NHS Test and Trace whether it be for 10 days as you have tested positive, or for two weeks because of a positive test or close contact to a positive case. At this point in time, the scheme is only available in England, NOT in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.

It is a struggle at the moment MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I’M often asked if I’m a glass half full or half empty person. My answer is always half full because even though I’m grumpy I have a positive, can’t be beat attitude. I’ve always treated life as a sequence of games and I try and win as many as I can. But at the moment, if someone was to ask me, I’d have to say I don’t know because someone’s nicked my friggin’ glass and left me with a plastic cup with a hole in it and it doesn’t matter how much I pour into it, it keeps emptying. But I’m not giving up - I’ll just keep pouring but very soon even I will have to give up and find another vessel to drink from. Wow, that was profound! But I hope you understand what I mean. It is a struggle at the moment. Accents need to be banned! Not in real life of course but definitely on the TV and, of course, not if the person comes from the same country as the accent. Those that need to be banned are Eastern European baddies. The ones that
add nothing to the enjoyment of the show and cause me to keep asking Mrs S what someone said. I watched a TV series the other day and wondered why can’t they just speak normally? Plus, in these woke times surely there must be a group that says if the part is an Eastern European villain then they have to get a real one to play the part. Donald Trump predicted on Wednesday at least 100 million doses of a coronavirus vaccine could be distributed by the end of 2020, contradicting a top government health official Trump dismissed as confused. Earlier, Robert Redfield, director of the federal Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, said a Covid-19 vaccine could be broadly rolled out by the middle of next year or a little later. “No I think he made a mistake when he said that,” Trump said. “That’s incorrect information. I believe he was confused. I think he just misunderstood the question, probably.” Really? Bumbling idiot. You honestly want people to believe you as opposed to the guy that heads up the CDC? Do You Listen To Your Thoughts? DIONE LOCKYER DID you know, you have up to 60,000 thoughts per day, and up to 80 per cent of those are negative? A shocking statistic isn’t it! Our thoughts are a HUGE part of our lives, but out of those 60,000, how many of those thoughts do you actually listen to? Society’s social wheel
teaches us to carry on with our normal, daily tasks, without actually asking ourselves. ‘What is it I am truly thinking?’ We, as humans, believe that our thoughts are our reality, we’ve allowed these thoughts and absorbed them since we were a child. When a thought comes into our mind, our brain searches for a memory that we can relate to that thought. If the memory is negative, the Cortisol hormone is released into
our nervous system to protect us, therefore, giving us a warning sign of danger. If the memory is positive, the hormone Dopamine is released, to give us pleasure. The problem that many people have is the fact that thoughts enter the mind, however, you don’t listen to what your thoughts are trying to tell you. It’s almost like the thoughts are brushed under the carpet, or accepted as ‘just a bad day.’ The more you ignore these thoughts, the louder the ego (little
voice in your head) gets. This little voice acts like a parent or a teacher, telling you what to do or not to do, making you feel deflated and uncertain of who you are. You struggle to hear your true self because you have that many thoughts, it feels like you’re in a playground with 50 screaming children. So, how can you truly listen to your thoughts and understand what they are trying to say to you? Here is a mindset technique that I have recently taught my clients. Try this in the comfort of your own home. 1. Find a comfortable quiet place, where you can be alone for the next 10 minutes. Light a candle, put on some soft music, or even sit in silence. It is important that you do what works for you. 2. Grab a piece of paper
and pen, without thinking of the task, write down any thoughts that come into your mind. This could be an array of one-word thoughts, a sentence, even a paragraph. Try not to overthink the task in
hand, just go with the flow and trust yourself. 3. Next to each thought, write down the emotion/feeling that you attach to this thought. How does this thought make you feel?
Winter-proof skin AUTUMN has settled in, and after making itself comfortable, it is finally bringing colder temperatures. For many, the cooler temperature is a welcome relief to the blazing heat and humidity of the summer. But the biggest organ in the body the skin - has already started getting goose bumps. Skin is our protection against external conditions and forms a protective barrier over the body’s surface. The epidermis is the outermost layer and makes sure to keep water in the body and infectious germs from entering. Seasonal changes can irritate and exacerbate existing skin conditions. A big percentage of the population is affected by some type of skin ailment in varying degrees of severity. Wind and cold aggravates dry and inflamed skin. For people who experience rosacea, the summer months can be a bad time of year. On the other hand, a wintery climate can be problematic for eczema, psoriasis and acne. Even people with a healthy dermis will notice red cheeks, taut skin and cracked lips. Although the effects of winter cannot be completely avoided, experts do recommend following a series of habits that can benefit the skin. An important thing to avoid is scalding hot baths and showers as the heat strips the skin of its natural oils. A shorter, cooler shower will help plus using a moisturising cream. Exposure to hot environments such as air-conditioned cars or rooms with dry air can further dehydrate the epidermis. A conscious effort should be made to drink plenty of water and supplementing diet with Omega 3 and 6 oils can reduce inflammation. Cosying up to the radiator or fireplace will also cause dryness, a humidifier will help this.

MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED TRYING to make this week’s column really personal as I think it may help me get a lot off my chest, but also someone out there reading this may feel comfort. I haven’t been OKAY for a few days I’m tired… I’m really, really tired, all I seem to be doing at the moment is absorbing other people’s emotions and feelings, which is then creating anxiety, stress and an overwhelming feeling for me. I would class myself as a person that has always been an empath, but it’s taking over me. I can’t seem to shift this big heavy bag of other people’s emotions, problems , and it’s starting to affect me. I have always been a sensitive soul, I could cry over spilt milk sometimes!! But recently things are getting out of hand and I’m not sure how to deal with it. But life carries on around so I can’t just lay in bed all day and wait for this to pass. I can’t not answer the phone to people and ignore them. As I’ve said many times, people view me as a high-functioning bipolar and to a large
extent, this is true. I do many things every day that many people with bipolar disorder can’t do because of their illness. I do battle with my bipolar demons and win more than some others. But I still find bipolar disorder, and life, to a large extent completely overwhelming and I feel paralysed by it. Of course, this might be in part because bipolar disorder is, in fact, overwhelming. People who don’t have bipolar disorder rarely understand this - they may view it as ‘just another illness’ - but people with bipolar disorder know. Bipolar disorder fundamentally changes the way your brain works and dealing with every single thought running through a bad circuit is overwhelming. In fact, if there were a bigger word for overwhelming, I would use it. It’s over-overwhelming. It’s double-overwhelming. It’s overwhelming squared. And so we fight this overwhelming disorder in spite of it feeling impossible. But it’s paralysing at times. It’s paralysing to have all these false thoughts pouring out of your brain. Understanding what we say and how we say it DOGS brains understand not only what we say but also how we say it and are able to distinguish the words and tones we use when speaking to them, a new study has revealed. Led by Attila Andics, professor at the University of Lorand in Budapest, the study, the results of which were published by Science magazine, played recordings of their trainers using different words and tones to 13 different dogs while using magnetic resonance scanners to study how their brains reacted. The dogs were found to use the left hemispheres of the brains, just like humans, and to recognise each word separately regardless of tone. “This study is the first step towards understanding how dogs interpret human speech and can help us understand communication between the two and make it more efficient,” Andics explained. Words are the main element of language and communication, while tone is another way of transmitting information. Humans use both to understand what they’re hearing, and the aim of the study, Andics said, was to discover whether dogs were also able to separate the two. In effect, they were found to process vocabulary and tone separately. Therefore, the team concluded, dogs are indeed able to distinguish between the words we say to them and the tone we use.

Ford puts on the style with the new Puma ROAD TEST by Mark Slack THEY didn’t notice me sitting quietly at the wheel as they strolled past my car. “That’s the new Puma,” said he. “Nice, isn’t it,” said she. A few minutes later they both purred past in their Porsche SUV. Two days later a lady passed on foot with her laden shopping trolley. “I like your car and especially the colour. Lovely.” So, there you have it; a new Ford making strangers remark on its looks and paint (£750 worth of grey matter, since you ask). Been some time since that’s happened, I’d wager. If you think a lot of people buy a car because they like the looks - and then argue they bought it for more common sense reasons - this
NEW PUMA: A lovely looking car in grey. latest medium sized SUV promises a healthy bottom line for Ford. Underneath the smart body sits a lot of a current Ford Fiesta, including engine and gearbox. But the bits you can see are all new and stretch further in every dimension than the Fiesta donor. Ford has a hard won reputation to maintain for building affordable cars that bring a smile to their dri-
ver’s face. It does too, with the sort of eagerness to tackle a corner that the highish body might warn against. Positive steering and a pretty snappy gear change add to the fun. You can pay as little as €22,261 (£20,545) for a Puma, which will come with a 1.0-litre 123bhp engine and share all the attributes of dearer cars. The pricier Pumas add a very mild hybrid system with an integrated starter/gen-
erator for a little more power and improved green credentials. Every Puma gets a cockpit that looks modern, works well but lacks the surface shine of some rivals, with a bit too much hard plastic scattered about. There’s plenty of room up front and just about enough in the back, before we reach the clever bit in the boot. Lift the boot floor and you discover what Ford calls a MegaBox, an 80-litre waterproof compartment, complete with drain plug for dirty wellies and the like. The goodies count is impressive, with this posh ‘un coming with heated windscreen, fine sat nav, cruise
control and a B&O 10speaker sound system. A whopping €5,363 (£4,950) of options, that grey paint included, along with fancy
