THE PAWS-PATAS animal shelter says its ‘applause’ to the Euro Weekly News for running a front page story in the Almeria edition and online which has helped prompt offers to foster abandoned dogs. The charity’s PR and fundraising coordinator Chrissie Cremore said the EWN article highlighting PAWS-PATAS’s desperate need for foster homes for the record numbers of cats, kittens, dogs and puppies left at the shelter’s gates since the start of the pandemic produced results. She reported that the shelter received emails from many people offering their assistance and to date a total of nine puppies and three dogs have been taken into care. “This has been amazing, because the shelter

could not deal with the volume of animals being abandoned, and because of the coronavirus situation, volunteers have not been able to travel from Holland and at times there have been
only three people cleaning, feeding and exercising 38 dogs,” Chrissie explained. The situation became so dramatic she said that she and her other half Stuart Drury and fellow
committee member Babs Willams had to “jump to the rescue.” Babs, who assists in homing dogs in the UK, has been living at the shelter for the past two months, while Chrissie
and Stuart have worked shifts with the dogs every day for the past five weeks. PAWS-PATAS’ President Vicky Hall has meanwhile taken on extra responsibility at the cattery. Apart from the welcoming news about fosterers, local adoptions have also increased, Chrissie revealed. It has been a case of “heartwarming, happy tears” she said to see four of the dogs leave the shelter for good and move to their “forever home” after many years.

the spread of Covid-19, although they try to criminalise us, but we are the most affected”, Garcia insisted. He claimed that “without a clear strategy which boosts the sector, the loss of companies and

employment will be inescapable.” Among the measures ASHAL is calling for are an extension of the ERTE work furloughs while the pandemic lasts, fiscal bonuses for rentals and resources for sunk costs for companies which have suffered a major loss of income. The association is also calling for a strategic plan for the sector to deal with the new reality.

Help is still needed The cattery has had three adoptions, and with over 50 cats and kittens still in their care the volunteers are busy following up on emails. According to Chrissie the EWN article also generated offers from four more people to volunteer and help with the dogs and a further two with the cats. “But please don’t think we can now relax,” Chrissie warned. “PAWS-PATAS is a constant merrygo-round, and due to other commitments, volunteers cannot always stay or give as much time as they wish. So please never think the animal charity has enough people to help. “We constantly need assistance keeping the shelter grounds tidy, for DIY, volunteering in one of our four outlets situated in Mojacar, Turre and Las Buganvillas, fundraisers, drivers to collect volunteers from the airport or Vera bus station, and long-haul drivers for overseas homing in Holland and the UK. As a specific example of what
PAWS-PATAS is constantly up against, Chrissie told EWN that just last week three boxes were left outside the shelter gates, one with an adult cat, one with two large kittens and one with two tiny kittens. One of the smaller ones, now named Rascal, is partially sighted, possibly blind, but loves being with his best mate who was abandoned with him, and who is now named Sid. It may take time to find the right home for both of them, Chrissie admits, but if 100 people would like to sponsor them and donated just €2 per week that would be a huge help, she pointed out, promising that PAWS-PATAS would keep everyone updated with their progress, situation and would also email photographs. PLANNING a joint strategy to secure EU funding for Almeria was the main subject on the agenda during talks bet w e e n p ro v i n c i a l c o u n c i l P re s i d e n t J a v i e r A G a rc i a and Junta de Andalucia Finance and European Financing regional minister Juan Bravo. The Diputacion president is particularly looking for regional government collaboration on ensuring Almeria’s request for Integrated Territorial Investment (ITI) programme funds for promoting advances in three key areas for the province’s economic structure: water sources, renewable energy and agrifood. The project backed by the Almeria Province Business Confederation (ASEMPAL) and the Almeria Provincial Council could mean a “before and after” for the province, according to Garcia. The local authority is turning one of the halls in the town’s Marques de Los Velez into the new municipal museum. The initiative has a budget of more than €82,000, which the Andalucia regional government’s Agriculture, Fishing and Sustainable Development department is subsidising. Cuevas Culture and Tourism councillor Maria Isabel Ponce explained works have started on the installation of elements and equipment in the exhibition hall. She said the job is expected to take three months to complete. Cuevas already has an exhibition area dedicated to Bronze Age archaeology. The council said the aim of the new project is to “enrich this exhibition, introducing a display in the im-

Demand for solutions THE Aguadulce en Marcha political grouping is demanding a lasting solution to the rockslide problem which forced the closure of a stretch of the N-340 coast road. The group has called on the Government Sub-delegation and Roquetas de Mar Council to “agree definitive works and a better public transport offer.” The demand comes the week after rocks, some of them huge, came down in the middle of the afternoon on September 8 on top of the ‘El Cañarete,’ which runs between Aguadulce and Almeria. The road had to be blocked off to traffic in both directions. This was just over eight months on from when a nearly fourtonne rock came crashing down on top of the road in the early hours on New Year’s Eve. Since then the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda has carried out €640,000 worth of repair works to the highway, reopening it to

traffic on June 19. Aguadulce en Marcha claims the situation is “playing with the lives of many people.” A statement from the group points out that many of Aguadulce’s residents have jobs in Almeria and El Ejido and drive to work. “The lack of alternative, effective public transport does not help traffic fluidity in our locality,” the group states. It also argues that Aguadulce should have direct communications with the Poniente hospital and better public transport.”

Carnival one way or another PLANS are in the pipeline for next year’s Almeria City carnival celebrations, one way or another depending on the Covid-19 situation. Almeria Municipal Carnival Federation president Nicolas Castillo has written to the city’s carnival groups to tell them that the event will be happening in 2021, but pointing out “it will not be the same as ever” due to the pandemic. The need for safety measures as set out by the authorities “obliges us to reinvent ourselves and think about a different format from the traditional carnival,” he said. The Federation president made it clear there could be major modifications, or even some cancellations, according to health authority requirements. Almeria City Council has already given the federation its support for next year’s events. The formal agreement between the two entities is due to be signed shortly, but the actual proposals for what will go ahead have yet to be set out. The provincial capital’s Culture councillor Diego Cruz underlined the council’s ongoing commitment to carnival, but like Castillo left no doubt that “health will be the priority at all times,” and the events which do go ahead will be with the health authorities’ authorisation. Cruz nevertheless expressed his confidence in the carnival federation’s creativity. “We will make Carnival 2021 safe and fun at the same time,” he commented.

THERE was a good turnout for an event to clear rubbish from the Salar de los Canos wetlands in Vera on Saturday. The local council reported that more than 100 volunteers took part in what was the first ‘Jornada de Limpieza de Entornos Naturales de Vera: no mas basuraleza’ (Vera natural environments cleaning day: no more litter). Between them they collected an industrial skip’s worth of trash and waste which they found lying around in the area. The Sureste athletics club and the Save the
Clean-up initiative Salar de Los Canos and territory association were behind the initiative, on which Vera Council collaborated. The administration provided the skip and essential materials like gloves and bags. The athletics club had called on local residents and associations to join in and do their bit with the aim of ‘uniting the values and spirit of sport with those of caring for and respecting the environment.’ Earlier this year the club,
THE municipal budget for Huercal-Overa is now official following its publication in the provincial Official Bulletin. It comes after the resolution of arguments presented in the last plenary session. The €16.6 million budget includes more than half a million euros in help for the self-employed and to promote the development of employment, the construction of two school canteens, social assistance and sections for Covid-19 disinfections, Finance councillor Adrian Ramos explained. “The government team is very happy on being able to have a budget which is useful for Huercal-Overa,” Ramos commented. The councillor said it represented “a combination of measures for dealing with the health and economic crisis coming from Covid.” He also highlighted a budget section for the completion of the municipal music school project. Ramos pointed out that the current administration had drawn up the budget plans since it took over the council in June, and maintained the measures were aimed at “increasing Huercal-Overa residents’ quality of life.” Further important investments in the pipeline for the

The association’s top objective is to see El Salar de los Canos established as a ‘point of special ecological and environmental interest’ through protection measures and actions, and to see Vera become a model for the management of natural resources.

POSTING jibes on social media about the injuries a policeman suffered when a drug trafficker rammed his vehicle has landed a 21-year-old from El Ejido in trouble with the law. Police have arrested the young man for slander and inciting hate against law enforcement and security forces and State institutions for his online comments. The post praised the drug dealer and cruelly mocked the police inspector, who was seriously hurt when the criminal drove a 4x4 loaded with bundles of hashish into his car in Algeciras earlier this month. Police launched an investigation into the author of the post the day it was published, and within 48 hours they had identified and detained him. According to police the 21-year-old is a sympathiser of radical, extreme right groups located in Almeria.

THE UK Ambassador to Spain Hugh Elliott has been talking about British tourism on the Costa Almeria with the provincial council. The UK’s top diplomat met with Diputacion de Almeria president Javier A Garcia and Tourism deputy Fer nando Gimenez by videoconference on Monday mor ning to analyse the UK tourism situation in the region and to discuss alternatives to ease the impact of the drop in the market for the destination since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Boris Johnson government’s decision at the end of July to impose a compulsory 14day quarantine on travellers returning to the country from Spain has been a particularly tough blow in terms of British visitor numbers to the region this summer. “We have put ourselves at the disposition of the Embassy and of the UK Government to coordinate initiatives which translate into the revitialisation of the tourism sector in Almeria Province,” Garcia said. “The British represent the main

also revealed that Monday’s talks covered Brexit as well, and specifically the legal security of British citizens or are Almeria residents or who have a second home in the region. Gardia told Hugh Elliott the provincial administration gives its every support “to collaborate in order that these citizens enjoy legal security and access to all the services Almeria’s councils and the Diputacion make available to residents “For us it is a matter of pride that these people have decided to live in our land,” he commented. “They are great ambassadors for the Costa Almeria destination, and have our full support.” A further topic the Diputacion representatives talked about with the ambassador was the province’s agri-food companies with export to the UK. According to the council he indicated a willingness to help with any queries and contribute to Almeria’s produce continuing to reach UK consumers.

INVESTMENT: The provincial council spent €150,000 on improvements to the surface of a stretch of the road. THERE is a smoother ride for motorists travelling on the AL-8101 between Oria and San Roque in Albox now the provincial council has completed works on a 1.5-kilometre stretch of the road. The Diputacion invested €150,000 on widening and improving the surface of the road which connects the two Almanzora municipalities. Provincial Development
deputy Oscar Liria explained the works project had been necessary due to the poor state of repair of the road and the fact it follows a very winding route due to the lay of the land. He said there had been points where the narrowness of the road represented a risk to traffic safety and maintained the works project had made it safer. The deputy pointed out
the Diputacion is aiming to invest €17.2 million in the conservation and maintenance of the provincial highway network between this year and 2023. There are plans for 58 different road projects throughout Almeria in total, which according to the Diputacion will represent a substantial improvement in road safety and in communication between localities.

Drinkers fined POLICE in Almeria issued sanctions against a group of 12 people after finding them boozing in a bar in the provincial capital at three in the morning. None of the drinkers in the establishment on Calle Poeta Luis Cernuda were wearing face masks. Nor were they bothering about social distancing.

Police are on the case. They all now face fines for breaking the health and safety measures estab-
lished in a Royal Decree of June 9 aimed at preventing and containing the spread of Covid-19. Police also sanctioned the bar for being open to the public outside the permitted hours. All establishments now have to close by 1am, and new customers cannot be admitted after midnight.
Hemp heist arrests THREE people are under arrest for stealing hemp from a greenhouse in Berja. Guardia Civil said the owner of the plantation dedicated to producing industrial hemp surprised three individuals inside the greenhouse robbing part of the crop and loading it into a van. Both the owner and an employee had to make a getaway when the thieves threatened them with an object, which in the poor light looked as though it could have been a gun. Guardia investigators managed to identify the suspected robbers and the
vehicle they believe was used in the robbery. Extensive surveillance of the area led to officers catching the two 35-year-old men and a 40-year-old woman the following day in the act of thieving from the same greenhouse a second time. The Guardia also reported they are investigating a minor in connection with the crime. The detainees face charges for robbery with violence and intimidation. A Berja court ordered that one of the suspects be held in prison without bail.

NATIONAL charity Age in Spain has helped over 8,000 Brits with online and one-to-one information and support in the first three months of its Residen-
cy Helpline Project. Thousands have used the Residency Helpline website for its accessible and accurate information on residency issues and resources. The Residency Helpline
volunteers and staff have provided some 280 individuals with direct one-to-one support tailored to their specific circumstances by phone or email. They have also directly
supported the applications of nearly 180 Brits applying for residency for the first time or exchanging their residency document for the new TIE, the foreigners’ identity card for UK citizens in Spain. Hazel, a British woman in her 50’s who lives in Catalonia, was one person who successfully applied for the TIE. “I found the guidance and support I received from Age in Spain to be invaluable when I was applying for Spanish residency,” she said. “I had been struggling on my own for a few months, and needed help to navigate through the confusing regulations.” Hazel has a disability and has been finding it difficult to find work. She also had issues with registering for the ‘padron,’ a council’s list of local residents, and with her old residency certificate. “After talking with Age in Spain I was able to present the right information and go through the process quickly and easily, with a positive result at the end,” she reported. Sarah, who retired to Spain some years ago, also needed help as she doesn’t have an email address and couldn’t access the appropriate forms and book an appointment.

DIRECT HELP: Residency Helpline volunteers and staff provide one-to-one support via phone or email. “I’ve been living in Spain for years and never had to worry about any of this stuff. Age in Spain helped me to understand the process and they sent me the forms,” said Sarah. The Residency Helpline was set up with financial support from the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office through the UK National Support Fund.“This service is helping to reach the most vulnerable people, who through no fault of their own, need help to sort out their residency,” commented Project Director Helen Weir. “Our service is free, confidential and makes a real difference, so that when the transition period of the UK leaving the EU finishes, all British nationals in Spain can take advantage of the Withdrawal agreement to
protect their rights as residents of Spain.” The Helpline covers all of Spain, with an outreach service for people who need extra support in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands. The charity is currently recruiting volunteers to do home visits to assist those who need extra support with booking appointments online, filling out forms and getting paperwork ready for their appointments. TWO Welsh comedians have collaborated to publish a new collection of jokes, raising money for the NHS in Wales and Torrevieja Hospital
in Spain. Gags for the NHS, a book by Phil Evans and Dilwyn Phillips, has been published by Y Lolfa and is already proving that
laughter is the best medicine. “Having been an inpatient in Torrevieja hospital on several occasions since moving to Spain I realised how tough it can be working in the hospitals, especially with the current pandemic and how much public support is needed to boost morale. “This is my way of saying thank you,” explained Dilwyn. The author, brought up in Pontarddulais, Wales, now living in Los Montesinos, said, “All proceeds of the sales of this book in Spain will be donated to the hospital. “As well as donating to the coffers of the hospital, buying this book will provide some much-needed escapism and hopefully will bring smiles to people’s faces.” EWN had the pleasure of speaking to Dilwyn after the book’s release. The softly spoken Welshman started life as a civil engineer, or “the graveyard of all ambition” as Dilwyn describes it, before moving onto life as a teacher. Following early retirement, Dilwyn ended up taking a part-time job in a local Welsh publisher and it was working there that

gave him his first foray into the world of joke books. At the time, the publishers were concentrating on more conventional subjects such as Welsh railways and castles, but Dilwyn suggested an entirely different path. And his Welsh joke books were born. The success of his books drew the attention of fellow comic, and Gags for the NHS collaborator, Phil Evans. The two, who have yet to meet in person, con-
nected on the internet around six years ago via an appreciation of each other’s work and last April the idea for this book was born. It was actually Dilwyn’s wife that planted the seed for this project. One day she commented that, “you spend so much time in Torrevieja Hospital, you should raise some money for it!” explained Dilwyn. And that’s what he and Phil are doing now. Phillips is now an author
of several popular joke collections. As well as gags and puns, this collection contains several funny stories with a medical twist. Gags for the NHS, which is priced at €5, is available in selected shops including Farmacia Fos, Los Montesinos, Citreon Garage, Benijofar, A Fancy That Torreta, Torrevieja or directly from Dilwyn Phillips. When EWN asked Dilwyn to sum up the book in four words, the wonderfully witty Welshman said it will “have you in stitches!”

Cody was born with a condition called Esophageal Atresia, which is a birth defect of the swallowing tube (esophagus) that connects the mouth to the stomach. The event held at the Portobello Bar Restaurant saw an amazing turnout and the organisers thanked: Quiz Master Paul Butterworth, the happy band of Church in the Community helpers, the Campoverde Walking Football team, everyone who so generously donated raffle prizes and everyone who couldn’t be there but donated anyway.

THE ‘elbow bump’ is a gesture that has become one of the images of the pandemic. Due to the danger posed by shaking someone’s hand in case of transmitting the virus. However, the WHO has now said they feel it should be avoided as it can also be unsafe. The moment we meet someone we know and haven’t seen for a long time, the tendency is natural, the body almost leans towards the other person. According to experts, a smile - even if disguised by a mask - should be enough to say ‘hello’ to someone.
It’s not just kisses, hugs or even a friendly nudge - the new greeting created during the pandemic, the widely adopted ‘elbow bump’ is now to be avoided. We see it everywhere, on the street, on television, but, according to the director of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, it is not advisable. So, how should we greet each other? The WHO director suggests holding your hand on your heart, always keeping a distance of at least 1.5 metres in relation to another person.

In addition to a fully equipped industrial kitchen, donated by local business, Yorkshire Linen, the team of volunteers has been inundated with much-needed clothes, food and other items. “Thanks to our community’s unwavering support, the official Project Costa ‘Tweety’ support vehicle is fully booked until October and cannot be used to collect any more food/clothing donations,” said project founder, Arne Soeten. “We are looking for volunteers with a car who would be willing to offer any extra time they may have - whether it is one hour a week or two hours a day - to help us make collections throughout our surrounding communities. Any time would be greatly appreciated!” Ever since Project Costa was conceived, Soeten and chef Steven Barnes,
who both have experience of living on the street, have not stopped. “It IS paying off, with dedication and all the help received from our local citizens as well as our corporate donors. We WILL make it happen!,” said Arne. Meanwhile, chef Steven is cooking up a storm in the kitchen, creating eye catching and mouth-watering dishes, in preparation for the first food distribution in Albir yesterday evening (Wednesday, September 16). The former restaurateur will be responsible for running the soup kitchen at the halfway house in Benitachell. “We here at Project Costa enjoy the same food as those living on the streets. We believe in serving only the freshest, most zestful food to the homeless,” said Steven. “We don’t use past ‘sell-
by date’ foods from supermarkets because we believe the homeless have suffered enough and should have proper diet and nutrition.” As EWN went to press, Steven was preparing 40 dishes of pasta salad to give to the homeless from a designated distribution point. “This will be the first distribution so we don’t really know how many people will come, but we are getting the word out there,” said Arne. Project Costa’s Facebook page already has 293 followers and is approaching 300 likes. “This means we’re clearly not the only ones who want to change the world,” posted Soeten. “Project Costa seeks to inspire people, wherever they are, by showing how much small acts of love, kindness and compassion mean to a per-
son in need. “It may be by hugging someone who rarely receives affection, or inviting an elderly or lonely neighbour for dinner, or giving a homeless man a pair of new socks, helping lift a pram off the bus, or carrying the shopping for a stranger who is struggling. “It doesn’t matter what we do, how we do it or where we do it, as long as we do it. Let’s just do it. POPULAR: Rise in Spanish podcast listeners cure lockdown lows.
FIRST TRIALS: 190 volunteers expected to take part. SPAIN’S first trials of a coronavirus vaccine developed by US firm Johnson & Johnson began this week. Three hospitals are carrying out the clinical trials - the Marques de Valdecilla Hospital in Santander and La Paz and La Princesa university hospitals in Madrid. The first phase of the tests took place in the US and Belgium, with Spain joining Belgium and Germany for the second phase. Some 190 volunteers are expected to take part, with 75 adults from La Paz, the hospital’s head of the clinical trials, Alberto Borobia told Spanish news agency, Servimedia. Fifty of these participants will be aged 18 to 55 with 25 aged over 65. He explained they will each receive either one shot of the vaccine or two shots a month apart. Some volunteers will be given a placebo, and doctors will monitor all of those taking part throughout the trials. It is hoped the first round of vaccination will be completed by
the end of September. According to Borobia, though the final results are expected no sooner than in 16 months, the move to phase three was given the go ahead upon ‘satisfactory preliminary results.’ World Health Organisation (WHO) stipulates that a potential vaccine must complete three phases of clinical trials to be approved for mass production. The first phase is is on a smaller scale with around 100 volunteers to deter mine salety and clinical tolerance. Phase two is on a larger scale, with up to 1,000 participants of different ages, ethnicity and other factors. Dose levels and intervals are also determined during this stage. As the trials move to phase three, up to 10,000 volunteers can be involved, with the maximum representation of target population categories. Definitive evidence of safety and the capacity to produce the desired result or effect is necessary before a candidate vaccine can move into industrial production.
LOCKDOWN increased listeners of podcasts in Spain by 25 per cent as many had more time to catch up with their favourite audio shows, and cure their lockdown lows. During strict lockdown protocols, both Spain and Italy experienced an increase in podcast enthusiasts, with an increase of 25 per cent and 29 per cent respectively, according to data. The podcast industry is big business and the increase in listeners, not just in Spain, is testament to how big the industry has gotten. Major investments from the likes of Spotify has meant there has never been a better time to listen to, or cre-
ate, a podcast. The news of Joe Rogan exclusively joining the Spotify platform, in a deal worth around £82 million (€90 million), meant a huge change in the podcast landscape as his show, The Joe Rogan Experience, is one of the biggest in the world. Spotify has made a significant push to become leaders in the podcast industry after buying major production companies such as Parcast and Gilmet Media. The diversity of podcasts has led to its rise in popularity, especially among young audiences, with Spaniards most enjoying podcasts on; science, health, politics, society, culture and comedy.

Both countries have reported over the last few days the highest number of positive cases since March, which in turn inflicts more restrictions on our lives. Both Boris Johnson and Pedro Sanchez, even though from opposite sides of the political spectrum, have a very similar route, trying to shape our ideas, mainly through propaganda. Generally, both societies are scared but the difference between March and now can be seen in how the public is reacting in a very similar way.It seems that they have been divided into two major groups; the sceptics and the government mainstream followers. The first are scared because their fundamental rights are being cut by a wave of regulations which they consider scientifically questionable and

SWEDEN: Has taken a very different route when facing the virus. the second are scared by the virus and believe that the trusted institutions know best how to protect our lives. An end to the pandemic doesn’t seem to be in sight
and the only options at the moment seem to be the vaccine or zero cases reported. Although there are claims that we will have the vaccine by 2021, it took many years to
develop other types of jabs and the flu vaccine is only 40 to 60 per cent successful. On the other hand, PCR tests are also not reliable as they detect a protein in blood which gives
many false positives and negatives. Therefore, the question arises, should tests to detect new infections be stopped? The main national media and broadcasting organisations in both countries have also contributed to the argument by the manner in which they are sensationalising the daily Covid figures. The facts seem to be made scary, to make the news more interesting and economical, which in turn makes it even harder to reach an unbiased judgement. The outcome leaves many questions to be answered, such as, what will happen next month if the number of infections is still the same? Will more businesses have to close? How will people be able to survive? Over the last few weeks, both groups have orchestrated strong arguments on social media platforms, but no one is really in the right or wrong. Or are they?

In the first six months of the year, total trade between the two countries amounted to just under €1 billion with the Ukraine taking the lion’s share at €700 million. Although it does have reasonable reserves of natural gas, the Ukraine lost a huge amount when Russia annexed the Crimea and is now looking to increase energy efficiency at which Spain has developed significant expertise.

European confidence was dented when Washington asked for a pause in the talks earlier this year as it be lieves there is room for a voluntary role for American companies. “It’s very clear, the United States don’t want a digital tax (deal) at the OECD. So, they are making obstacles which prevent us from reaching an agreement even though the technical

Unity call for budget
WORKING TOGETHER: Carmen Calvo wants all parties to agree budget. IT is time for the minority Spanish government to present the 2021 budget to the Cortes in the hope that all parties will work together to allow for a measure of certainty unlike previous budgets where there was considerable difficulty in obtaining approval. Deputy Prime Minister Car men Calvo made it clear that she expects to ensure that pen sions and salaries of govern ment employees are not re duced or frozen as that would only make the economic situa tion worse. She insists that the govern ment is prepared to do what it can to satisfy the needs and ex pectations of the main opposi tion parties on the understand
ing that they accept the overall ‘blueprint’ of the budget and give it their support. Already, Ciudadanos has in dicated that it is unlikely to block the budget, but it is the PP which needs to come on board for the good of the coun try and not oppose the plans as up until now she says that they have basically followed a policy of “vetoing and not helping.” Much will depend on the po sition of the ERC (Catalan left wing proindependence party) which needs to consider whether there is any advantage to Catalonia in blocking the overall budget as that will not forward any of its plans. You’re being ‘gaslighted’
THIS week’s blurb has been partially drawn from the input provided by a member of my small band of faithful contributors to whom I shall be eternally grateful. It is for those of us consistently bamboozled by the pure guff put out by some of our main media outlets; those large numbers of reports that we know have almost no resemblance to actual events. Have no fear, you are not going crazy - you are being ‘Gaslighted’! Gaslighting is a form of brainwashing, aimed at controlling people by altering reality to a point where those targeted begin to doubt their own sanity. The term comes from a 1930’s play, where the main character drives his wife insane by slowly dimming the gas powered lights. When she notices the lights are dimming, he not only denies it, but convinces her it is her imagination to a point where she questions her own sanity. We are constantly being told by the media of situations which are at complete odds with what we are seeing with our own eyes. We see disruption and rioting and are told it is peaceful protesting. We see murderers running amok and

Particularly over the last 12 months, we have seen a positive tsunami of non-white actors and mixed marriages utterly disproportionately featured on almost 90 per cent of our TV advertising, and are informed that black actors and artists are still being discriminated against. We are told that integration and di-
versity is working, yet we witness whole towns being taken over by foreign cultures. We observe areas of our cities being terrorised by non-white gangs and are told it is the fault of the police. You spend your life trying to treat all individuals as equals and abhor racism, but are told you are a privileged racist purely because of the colour of your skin. You know you are not and that the accusation in itself is racist, but when
you try to defend yourself, you are told that your defence is proof of your racism. You are told you live in an environment of true freedom of speech, yet when you speak out you are accused of bigotry and discrimination. Worry not. You are not losing your minds. Crazy people don’t question their sanity. These media perpetrators deal in lies and psychological coercion. What their ultimate aims are is utterly beyond my comprehension. What I do know however is that we have to believe the evidence of our own eyes. Trust your own observations; believe what you perceive as the truth. You’re not crazy. You’re being Gaslighted. Dear Euro Weekly News, It is such a shame to hear about all these businesses having to bow out of the summer season early due to low customer numbers. It has been really brave of them to try and push forward for so long as I understand it must have been so hard counting customers each day and hoping that they would make enough to pay the staff. The thing is, for all those who will still dare to come on holiday where are they going to go for entertainment? It’s just another nail in the coffin for the expats out there. So sorry to hear about El Oceano and over the weekend I also heard about The Boardwalk in Marbella. Such popular places. Let’s hope they have a fantastic next season to make up for it. AS of Monday, September 14, the UK has been under some new regulations with regard to the Covid virus. The most controversial being the dreaded ‘rule of six,’ which means that any social gatherings of more than six people will be against the law, apart from certain exemptions like work and education. Authorities will be able to dish out fines ranging from £100 to a whopping £3,200. But where on earth did they get this number from, six, why six people? Is it because they worked out the size of a normal place people would congregate and calculated that if they were all to be two metres apart they could only fit six people in there or was it just plucked from the sky? Another random number that dropped into headlines recently was eight, a reduction to eight days quarantine. That sounded a bit better and am sure would have made some people think that the UK government were moving forward. However, it seems to have been erased from their minds as quickly as it was suggested. It seems that there are also different rules throughout the UK just to make it even harder to understand. In Scotland, up to eight people from three households can meet indoors, up to six from two households in Northern Ireland and in Wales, up to four households can form an ‘extended household.’ Do that many households actually spend time with each other? Also, it is said six cannot go to the supermarket together, is that something that happens? That’s a lot of people going shopping. Anyway, some kind of activity is better than no activity and we can only hope they know what they are doing. It’s not going to be a very good family Christmas for some people.

No faith Dear Leapy, Although I’m not British, I am your fan. I have been following/reading your articles in Euro Weekly News in Spain for some two years, ever since we bought an apartment on the Costa del Sol. In fact, that paper would be totally worthless if it weren’t for your articles in which there used to be some reflection of reality and not just the official narrative ******** like in the rest. However, I’ve noticed that you have become uncritical, especially with this new medical tyranny that is present in a severe form in Spain. But you must have seen clips on social media involving police abuse of those not wearing a mask. I had a similar ‘experience’ where I was sitting with my husband on the bench in the main square and I was talking on the phone. While seated and talking I removed the mask. And then two bullies of the police approached us, treating me like a criminal. The worse one of the two grabbed my phone from me even though by then I duly put my mask on. To cut the story short, this is just disgraceful what’s happening in Spain and how people are treated. If only some of these events would be reported. Regards from me who has lost faith! V Koblar

Garages or building work carried out attached to the boundaries cannot obtain a licence. The minimum distance from an open window to the neighbour’s boundary is two metres in Spain, but generally detached villas must stay away from the boundary by a minimum three metres. 2. Glazed in terraces or closed-in porches are built without a proper licence in 95 per cent of cases. Spanish properties traditionally tend to have open (patios) or semiopen spaces (porches) to create breezes or shaded areas. These spaces are very frequently closed in by using glazing or brick work. And if you can find that number maybe you can find out how many died? I can’t find this information anywhere. Maybe I’m looking in the wrong place. I want the confirmed official figures please. If they are not available I want to know why. I think people should be told the number. To be honest I’ve pretty much given up trying to find out. My friends continually ask how things are here and I have to tell them it’s not that bad. The Spanish government seem to be handling it so much better than the UK government who just seem to keep making the most ridiculous rules. New rules for England came into force on September 14 banning people from gathering in groups of more than six. But there are exceptions to the rule - such as people being allowed to meet in bigger groups at work, in school and for wed-
dings and funerals. The problem with all this is how do you police it? I read over the weekend that some bloke got fined 10 grand for throwing a big party. They might as well have fined him a million pounds because I bet there is absolutely no chance of him paying it. The dairy section of your favourite supermarket carries an array of ‘milk’ options: whole, reduced-fat, low-fat, fatfree, lactose-free, almond, soya, coconut and more. If you are looking for a liquid to pour on top of your cereal you have plenty of options. But are they all milk? No absolutely not! Because there is no such thing as soya milk. It’s soya juice. The same goes for almond, coconut, hemp, rice, cashew, hazelnut, and oat. Milk comes from mammals and there are no lactating almonds. I looked and have not seen any way to ‘milk’ any of these items. How did we ever cope? When we were much younger we went to a cafe or, if you were posh, a Lyons corner house. Remember them? You would order your tea or coffee and it came with either milk in it or maybe in a small jug. Lactose intolerance wasn’t invented yet. What happened? When did it all start? BARRY DUKE THERE’S an excruciatingly funny UK blog called AdTurds that pokes fun at really stupid commercials and invites submissions from people who are pushed by bad ads to the brink of insanity. Responding to the invitation, this week I started a list beginning with ads for Galbani mozzarella which leave no doubt that the Dawn of the Dumb really is upon us. Depending on the version, either a dorky female or fella badly mangles the word Galbani. So you hear them saying ‘Galabanani’ or ridiculous versions thereof. Its purpose is, of course, to get us to stuff more of the brand down our gullets. But what it actually does is portray Brits as imbeciles who can’t get their tongues around a word as simple as Galbani. When the TV version debuted, it sparked a great deal of fury, with normally laid back folk losing all selfcontrol and saying things on discussion boards and social media such

sive because, like the Galbani ads, it presents Brits as morons. But the one that’s currently annoying me more than any other concerns the UK’s future outside of the EU. The government is currently spending gazillions trying to convince people that leaving the EU
will bring rainbows, kittens, bunnies and unicorns in abundance. So, what I hear multiple times a day on LBC is ‘The UK’s new start: let’s get going’ ads. They are a version of a statement issued in July by the ghastly Tory toff Michael Gove who said: “At the end of this year we are leaving the single market and Customs Union regardless of the type of agreement we reach with the EU. “This will bring changes and significant opportunities for which we all need to prepare … This is a new start for everyone in the UK - British and European citizens alike - so let’s get going.” Of all the ads that assume all Brits are goggle-eyed ninnyhammers, this one must surely take the biscuit if not the entire packet. ‘Significant opportunities my arse,’ as Jim Royle, of ‘The Royle Family’ fame would say.

www.euroweeklynews.com ROAD TEST New Golf marks by Mark Slack two anniversaries LAUNCHING the latest version of the ever-popular Golf this year has marked two anniversaries for the German car maker. It is 75 years since a 28year-old British Army Major, Ivan Hirst, was given responsibility for leading the reshaping of VW’s largely destroyed Wolfsburg plant back into a civilian car factory. By the time Hirst left there was a modern factory, ready to go, with a labour force, a German management and a product that was proven. That product was the iconic Beetle, and that German management and workforce made VW a worldwide automotive success story. The latest Golf is in its eighth generation, 45 years since it first launched. It has become a classless car loved by everyone from ordinary families to the rich and famous. Golf 8 starts at
€26,143 (£23,300) on-theroad for the lead-in Life model with a perky 1.0-litre TSi engine under the bonnet. Standard fare includes climate control, powered and heated door mirrors, automatic lights and wipers plus automatic dimming rear view mirror, alloy wheels, navigation and a plethora of safety kit. Three petrol engines - 110 hp,1.0-litre three-cylinder and 130 hp or 150 hp 1.5-litre four- cylinder - plus a 1.5-litre mild hybrid and 115 hp or 150 hp 2.0-litre diesel. Transmissions are six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG dual clutch automatic. Despite some noticeable minor cost-cutting measures - the lack of a gas strut on the bonnet, no cover over the cup holders in the centre console, visible key apertures on the door handles and a few others there is still that solid, durable and quality feel to
this latest Golf. It has gone far too digital for some, although I’m sure VW would argue that the system makes for a more efficient driver experience. However, to me the system is not as intuitive as it could be and, until you’re fully used to it, it can feel like a distraction. On the road, performance brings no complaints with my 115 hp 2.0litre diesel providing a good turn of speed when required and impressive fuel consumption. Despite being a ‘dirty’ diesel it is now one of the cleanest units available with major reductions in nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions. With its smartly evolved design there is no mistaking this is a Golf, it retains that certain something special on the style front which appeals to so many drivers. At its price point the new Golf needed to deliver… it does!
