A TRAINING and internship programme is hoping to be launched in Murcia giving 27 unemployed young people a chance to work at Food Banks. Murcia City Council has requested financing from the SEF (Regional Employment Service and Training) of €276,125 and if approved, this positive programme will see these unemployed youngsters carry out meaningful work at local Food Bank facilities. The 27 unemployed young people, between the ages of 16 and 29 years old, will have to be enrolled in the Youth Guarantee programme in order to be in with a chance of selection. The programme will focus on the improvement, maintenance, cleaning and disinfection of the
Food Bank facilities. They will help with increasing the effectiveness and efficiency in the work processes to make better use of resources. They will also support the volunteer staff in charge of the food collection campaigns, as well as the storage and subsequent distribution among various associations, NGOs (Non-Government Organisation), and home visits. The local Food Bank facilities have seen an increase in its work since the pandemic and has left many groups of people in

vice aims to train them to achieve certificates of professionalism. The programme is expected to last nine months and be divided
into two phases; a threemonth training stage and a six-month training programme alternating with professional practice. Training will concen-
trate specifically on auxiliary warehouse activities; cleaning of open spaces and industrial facilities and carpentry and furniture work. They will also be trained in information technology, occupational risk prevention, gender equality, social economy, environmental awareness and job search and improvement resources. Successful participants will be hired by the Murcia City Council with a contract for training and learning, receiving 75 per cent of the minimum inter-professional salary.

Cody Fundraiser a Success CAMPOVERDE has been the stage of a wonderful story as a community has come together to support a small boy who is suffering from a life-threatening condition. Fundraising for Cody and his family has been ongoing but a Quiz for Cody saw even more generosity from the loving community. The quiz raised a whopping €1,303 which will go towards the care and support of Cody and his family. Cody was born with a condition called Esophageal Atresia, which is a birth defect of the swallowing tube (esophagus) that connects the mouth to the stomach. The event held at the Portobello Bar Restaurant saw an amazing turnout and the organisers thanked: Quiz Master Paul Butterworth, the happy band of Church in the Community helpers, the Campoverde Walking Football team, everyone who so generously donated raffle prizes and everyone who couldn’t be there but donated anyway.

CHRISTMAS lights will be shining extra bright in Elche this year as the City Council allocates an increase of €40,000 for more Christmas lighting. MEL’S KITCHEN in San Fulgencio will host a lovely morning of delicious home-made cakes and coffee dedicated to raising money for a wonderful charity. The event, which is on Friday, September 25, will welcome guests set for a morning of fun and fabulous food in order to raise money for San Fulgencio’s local MABS cancer support group. Mel’s Kitchen, located in Calle Madrid, Urbanisation La Marina, 101, Local 25, have already received donations from staff and customers who will be baking and flaking cakes to sell on the day. MENTAL HEALTH advice and career guidance are being offered as part of a series of amazing talks for young people in Los Montesinos. Bag Thieves on film TWO tricky thieves were caught on camera stealing a bag from a lady at a restaurant, whilst her friend was still at the table! In the unbelievable footage, the crime shows two criminals stealing a bag without breaking a sweat. When one of the women gets up to go to the toilet, the friend has no idea the bag she is supposed to be watching is being stolen from right under her nose. The confident criminals wait nearby for the perfect opportunity to steal the unattended bag. The female thief uses an extendable grabber to pull the bag closer whilst her accomplish pretends to be on the phone. As they stand up to leave, the woman quickly hooks the bag over her shoulder as they calmly walk away.

Karate Federation Not Getting Chopped THE Karate Federation of the Region of Murcia holds a lot of events in the city and a Governing Board has agreed an extension for the use of one of its sports centres. The municipal space of the Puente Tocinos sports centre will be used for the continued development of the federation’s activities. The space, located on the ground floor of the Puente Tocinos Pavilion, is normally set up as an office, an archive room, a meeting room and/or an equipment storage space. As part of an agreement between the leg-sweeping federation and the Governing Board, the federation will take care of the maintenance and conservation costs of the 20 square metre space. The Karate Federation will be thankful not to get the chop as they already host numerous activities in this pavilion which is home to their equipment throughout the year.

STAYING CONNECTED: Guardamar gets free Wi-Fi.
STAYING connected in Guardamar del Segura will become a whole lot easier with the introduction of free Wi-Fi. Free access Wi-Fi has been installed in Guardamar del Segura as the City Council spends a large amount of money to keep the community connected. The network called WIFI4EU, will not require a password and is current-
ly available in Avda Pines, the House of Culture and the Music School. However, there are plans to expand the free Wi-Fi to further areas if this initial investment proves a success. A grant of â‚Ź15,000 was given by the European Commission in order to provide these free Wi-Fi spots to public spaces of Guardamar.

KNITTED KNOCKERS is a wonderful charity that helps women from all over the world and it has finally been able to dispatch their gifts again. The non-profit, voluntary association makes and distributes hand knitted breast prostheses. This lovely charity has representatives in Costa Del Sol and southern Costa Blanca who provide the hand-made prostheses, free of charge, to women who have had mastectomies. EWN spoke to an English woman living in the Costa Blanca area, who had a double mastectomy this year, “Knitted Knockers have been amazing, I have a pair for swimming and others for everyday use; no-one can even tell that I have had

DANA Exhibition THE anniversary of the tragic Gota Fría was memorialised as part of a photographic exhibition at a gallery in Orihuela. The exhibition titled ‘DANA and the river of solidarity,’ will be available until October 8 in the CAM Building exhibition hall before it visits civic and social centres along the coast. Mayor Emilio Bascuñana has expressed his intention to continue this initiative “in the future with more images from photographers and neighbours so that we can continue to remember this historical fact that we want to share with everyone. “This exhibition was framed within the events that we had planned to
carry out in commemoration of DANA and it has been the only one that has been maintained.” In photos capturing the meteorological tragedy, photographers Rate Bas, Alberto Aragón, Maru Sarabia and Toni Sevilla, four professional photographers from Orihuela, have donated their material so that visitors can take a visual tour of those devastating days. “We are mainly dedicated to storytelling and this one was a bit tough. “All stories have a beginning, a middle and an end, which was more disastrous than we thought and we wanted to reflect it in our photographs,” explained photographer Rate Bas.

AFTER months of the country being stuck in lockdown, HELP Murcia Mar Manor were able to present Los Arcos Hospital with five specialist wheelchairs. The wheelchairs will enable patients with mobility difficulties to be taken directly from a bed into a shower. President of HELP Murcia Mar Manor, Christine Baillie, was at long last able to present the wheelchairs to Pedro Escudero, Los Arcos’s Maintenance Manager and Maria Dolores, the Nursing Director of the Hospital. These chairs, which are specially designed to be easy to get into, can be pushed into a shower to enable patients to maintain their cleanliness with dignity, when unable to shower normally. Virtual Book Fair MURCIA CITY COUNCIL has adapted to these coronavirus times by switching its third Murcia Book Fair to a digital format. “In order to give continuity to this cultural event, already consolidated in our city, we have decided to adapt the face-to-face format to a digital one, which allows it to be held according to the recommendations of the health authorities,” explained Mercedes Bernabé, who heads the Department of Urban Agenda and Open Government.
The Book Fair will be held from October 7 to 12 with scheduled events, such as book presentations, debates, interviews or meetings with authors. “Culture and education are a priority for this consistory, so we are going to continue working so that the Book Fair continues in our city, but in a safe and accessible way to everyone,” announced Mercedes Bernabé. The decision means that people can now enjoy their favourite books, and discover new ones, from the safety of their home, or wherever they choose. Last year’s event, brought together more than 62,000 people and had a total of 43 booths and 38 exhibitors from all over Spain. AWARENESS: Skies turn turquoise in Murcia for FASD Day. THE Murcian sky was lit up as the city helped spread more awareness on World FASD Day. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, or Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, have had a special awareness day every year since the tradition began back in 1999, on September 9. This day was chosen so that on the ninth day of the ninth month of the year, the world will remember that during the nine months of pregnancy a woman should abstain
from alcohol. In order to give visibility to those affected by this disease and raise awareness about the challenges and difficulties that families of FASD sufferers have to face, the skies over Murcia were illuminated in turquoise. Drinking alcohol during pregnancy is the main cause of irreversible effects on the baby’s brain, which produces damaging, and lasting, neuronal alterations. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is
the cause of a high amount of ‘intellectual disabilities’ across the world, meaning that awareness to the cause is highly important.

IT might sound like something from a sci-fi movie, but Covid Area 8, a building in Torre Pacheco, is designed to aid in Covid-19 support and diagnosis. The mayor of Torre Pacheco, Antonio León, has announced that the building serves as a place for residents of the municipality to go if they are summoned by their doctor to have the PCR tests performed. The service is located in the Urbahita Social Centre in Torre Pacheco and is the second, together with Los Narejos, within the Torre Pacheco health area. Well, a project in Murcia is aiming to solve that, whilst providing some more visually pleasing municipal areas. More than 300 trees have become works of wonderful tree art on roundabouts and medians in the Murcian municipality. “We turn these spaces of the municipality into green works of art, which beautify
our accesses and make our municipality more beautiful, with the maxim always to improve the quality of life of our residents,” mayor José Guillén highlighted. Using a technique known as ‘topiary,’ which consists of making different artistic forms, three types of shapes have been used in this project; plates, cylinders and mushrooms. The shapes used allow for greater visibility of the vehicles that circulate the roundabout, whilst avoiding the fall of branches and lifting of the roots.

THE ‘elbow bump’ is a gesture that has become one of the images of the pandemic. Due to the danger posed by shaking someone’s hand in case of transmitting the virus. However, the WHO has now said they feel it should be avoided as it can also be unsafe. The moment we meet someone we know and haven’t seen for a long time, the tendency is natural, the body almost leans towards the other person. According to experts, a smile - even if disguised by a mask - should be enough to say ‘hello’ to someone.
It’s not just kisses, hugs or even a friendly nudge - the new greeting created during the pandemic, the widely adopted ‘elbow bump’ is now to be avoided. We see it everywhere, on the street, on television, but, according to the director of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, it is not advisable. So, how should we greet each other? The WHO director suggests holding your hand on your heart, always keeping a distance of at least 1.5 metres in relation to another person.

PREPARING FOR RAIN ORIHUELA’S Infrastructure department is currently clearing streambeds and watercourses in residential areas. With rain - and potentially heavy rain - likely during the autumn, the town hall intends to take no chances and is reducing the risk of flooding. “We are leaving streambeds with their own natural sediment while eliminating all kinds of unwanted objects and vegetation so that rainwater can run off unimpeded and prevent potential floods,” Infrastructures councillor Angel Noguera said. No Lockdown for Magnets FOR the 17th summer in a row, Steve and IreneMaria Campbell were planning on holding their Magnets Children’s Holiday Bible Club in Torrevieja. The year 2020 began with great hope, however as the months rolled on, the extent of the Coronavirus became clearer and Spain went into lockdown. Magnets didn’t let this get them down though as they decided to hold Mini Magnets@Home. This involved meetings in their garden with smaller groups of children on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, with a different set of children on each of the days, observing social distancing. The couple were able to provide most of the
usual programme for the Holiday Club, including games, memory verse, Bible story, quiz, crafts and finishing off with juice and biscuits - very welcome on a hot, sunny afternoon! The theme they decided to follow was ‘Miracles of Jesus’ looking at some of the most wellknown, including Jesus stilling the storm, healing blind Bartimaeus and feeding the 5,000. The miracles were explained then related to everyday life for the children to relate to. No-one knows what next year will bring, but we hope and pray for an end to the pandemic. One thing is for sure, if Steve and Irene-Maria have anything to do with it, Magnets 2021 will go ahead.

Town hall sends in its bill TOWN HALL: San Miguel hopes for a Los Invernaderos solution.
SAN MIGUEL DE SALINAS Town Gall is claiming €10 million in infrastructure fees for the abandoned Los Invernaderos development. The demand comes 10 years after roads and utilities were installed for what was planned as a 1,700home extension to the centre of San Miguel. The plans were approved by the regional government in 2004 when the property boom was at its height. Infrastructure and services were put in place but the economic crisis meant that only three four-
storey blocks of apartments were built. The developers could not pay the banks and most of the 500,000 square metres of land is fenced off and abandoned.

POPULAR: Rise in Spanish podcast listeners cure lockdown lows. LOCKDOWN increased listeners of podcasts in Spain by 25 per cent as many had more time to catch up with their favourite audio shows, and cure their lockdown lows. During strict lockdown protocols, both Spain and Italy experienced an increase in podcast enthusiasts, with an increase of 25 per cent and 29 per cent respectively, according to data. The podcast industry is big business and the increase in listeners, not just in Spain, is testament to how big the industry has gotten. Major investments from the likes of Spotify has meant there has never been a better time to listen to, or cre-
ate, a podcast. The news of Joe Rogan exclusively joining the Spotify platform, in a deal worth around £82 million (€90 million), meant a huge change in the podcast landscape as his show, The Joe Rogan Experience, is one of the biggest in the world. Spotify has made a significant push to become leaders in the podcast industry after buying major production companies such as Parcast and Gilmet Media. The diversity of podcasts has led to its rise in popularity, especially among young audiences, with Spaniards most enjoying podcasts on; science, health, politics, society, culture and comedy.

ALICANTE AIRPORT: Fewer planes but fewer problem passengers. IN 2019 the Alicante Airport authorities had to deal with 192 incidents involving antisocial passengers. This was more than any other Spanish airport, but as the number of passengers travelling for pleasure or business plunged, so did the number of incidents. These fell to just 15 between January and the end of July according to Spain’s State Aviation Security Agency (AESA). Two people were also removed from their aircraft for disruptive behaviour, compared with 32 in 2019. Madrid Airport headed the list of trouble-
makers during this same seven-month period, followed by Alicante, Malaga, Tenerife South and Gran Canaria. Palma airport, which had the second-highest number of problem passengers last year registered only three. Madrid also had six unruly passengers taken off their plane, followed by Malaga (five), Alicante, Fuerteventura and Manises (Valencia) with two each. Overall, AESA registered 141 incidents between January and late July with Spanish travellers causing the most trouble, followed by the British, Germans and Romanians.

Residen NATIONAL charity Age in Spain has helped over 8,000 Brits with online and one-to-one information and support in the first three months of its Residency Helpline Project. Thousands have used the Residency Helpline website for its accessible and accurate information on residency issues and resources. The Residency Helpline volunteers and staff have provided some 280 individuals with direct one-to-one support tailored to their specific circumstances by phone or email. They have also directly supported the applications of nearly 180 Brits applying for residency for the first time or exchanging their residency document for the new TIE, the foreigners’ identity card for UK citizens

Sarah, who retired to Spain some years ago, also needed help as she doesn’t have an email address and couldn’t access the appropriate forms and book an appointment. “I’ve been living in Spain for years and never had to
worry about any of this stuff. Age in Spain helped me to understand the process and they sent me the forms,” said Sarah. The Residency Helpline was set up with financial support from the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office through the UK National Support Fund. “This service is helping to reach the most vulnerable people, who through no fault of their own, need help to sort out their residency,” commented Project Director Helen Weir. “Our service is free, confidential and makes a real difference, so that when the transition period of the UK leaving the EU finishes, all British nationals in Spain can take advantage of the Withdrawal agreement to protect their rights as residents of Spain.”
The Helpline covers all of Spain, with an outreach service for people who need extra support in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands. The charity is currently recruiting volunteers to do home visits to assist those who need extra support with booking appointments online, filling out forms and getting paperwork ready for their appointments. We believe in serving only
the freshest, most zestful food to the homeless,” said Steven. “We don’t use past ‘sellby date’ foods from supermarkets because we believe the homeless have suffered enough and should have proper diet and nutrition.” As EWN went to press, Steven was preparing 40 dishes of pasta salad to give to the homeless from a designated distribution point. “This will be the first distribution so we don’t really know how many people will come, but we are getting the word out there,” said Arne. Project Costa’s Facebook page already has 293 followers and is approaching 300 likes. “This means we’re clearly not the only ones who want to change the world,” posted Soeten. “Project Costa seeks to inspire people, wherever they are, by showing how much small acts of love, kindness and compas-
sion mean to a person in need. “It may be by hugging someone who rarely receives affection, or inviting an elderly or lonely neighbour for dinner, or giving a homeless man a pair of new socks, helping lift a pram off the bus, or carrying the shopping for a stranger who is struggling. “It doesn’t matter what we do, how we do it or where we do it, as long as we do it. Let’s just do it. Clinical trials S PA I N ’ S f i r s t t r i a l s of a coronavirus vaccine developed by US firm Johnson & Johnson began this week. Three hospitals are carrying out the clinical trials - the Marques de Valdecilla Hospital in Santander and La Paz and La Princesa university hospitals in Madrid. The first phase of the tests took place in the US and Belgium, with Spain joining Belgium and Ger many for the

Some 190 volunteers are expected to take part, with 75 adults from La Paz, the hospital’s head of the clinical trials, Alberto Borobia told Spanish news agency, Servimedia. Fifty of these participants will be aged 18 to 55 with 25 aged over 65. He explained they will each receive either one
shot of the vaccine or two shots a month apart. Some volunteers will be given a placebo, and doctors will monitor all of those taking part throughout the trials. It is hoped the first round of vaccination will be completed by the end of September. According to Borobia, though the final results are expected no sooner
than in 16 months, the move to phase three was given the go ahead upon ‘satisfactory preliminary results.’ World Health Organisation (WHO) stipulates that a potential vaccine must complete three phases of clinical trials to be approved for mass production. The first phase is is on a smaller scale with around 100 volunteers to deter mine salety and clinical tolerance. Phase two is on a larger scale, with up to 1,000 participants of different ages, ethnicity and other factors. Dose levels and intervals are also determined during this stage. As the trials move to phase three, up to 10,000 volunteers can be involved, with the maximum representation of target population categories. Definitive evidence of safety and the capacity to produce the desired result or effect is necessary before a candidate vaccine can move into industrial production.

17 - 23 September 2020 TWO Welsh comedians have collaborated to publish a new collection of jokes, raising money for the NHS in Wales and Torrevieja Hospital in Spain. Gags for the NHS, a book by Phil Evans and Dilwyn Phillips, has been published by Y Lolfa and is already proving that laughter is the best medicine. “Having been an inpatient in Torrevieja hospital on several occasions since moving to Spain I realised how tough it can be working in the hospitals, especially with the current pandemic and how much public support is needed to boost morale. “This is my way of saying thank you,” explained Dilwyn. The author, brought up in Pontarddulais, Wales, now living in Los Montesinos, said, “All proceeds of the sales of this book in Spain will be donated to the hospital. “As well as donating to the coffers of the hospital, buying this book will provide some muchneeded escapism and hopefully will bring smiles to people’s faces.” EWN had the pleasure of speaking to Dilwyn after the book’s release. The softly spoken Welshman started life as a civil engineer, or “the graveyard of all ambi-

Following early retirement, Dilwyn ended up taking a part-time job in a local Welsh publisher and it was working there that gave him his first foray into the world of joke books. At the time, the publishers were concentrating on more conventional subjects such as Welsh rail-
ways and castles, but Dilwyn suggested an entirely different path. And his Welsh joke books were born. The success of his books drew the attention of fellow comic, and Gags for the NHS collaborator, Phil Evans. The two, who have yet to meet in person, connected on the internet around six years ago via an appreciation of
each other’s work and last April the idea for this book was born. It was actually Dilwyn’s wife that planted the seed for this project. One day she commented that, “you spend so much time in Torrevieja Hospital, you should raise some money for it!” explained Dilwyn. And that’s what he and Phil are doing now. Phillips is now an author of several popular joke collections. As well as gags and puns, this collection contains several funny stories with a medical twist. Gags for the NHS, which is priced at €5, is available in selected shops including Farmacia Fos, Los Montesinos, Citreon Garage, Benijofar, A Fancy That Torreta, Torrevieja or directly from Dilwyn Phillips. RAVE: Illegal parties are becoming more popular during the current pandemic.

Secret parties H E A LT H a u t h o r i t i e s in Spain are pleading with young people to stop holding illegal parties as the in-
creasing number of Covid-19 cases in the country continues to lead the way in the impending
second wave. Despite the warnings, in the early hours of Thursday, September 10, the Madrid police
arrested and fined 73 people who had ignored the ban on evening gatherings while holding a party, in a basement where no one was wearing a mask. The weekend before that, 75 people were arrested in an unlicensed premises used as a bar and brothel. The explosion of illegal parties has been singled out by authorities as one of the key causes of the spike in cases through July and August, leading to a national agreement between the central and regional governments to close bars early. However, the parties often do not take place in regular establishments, youngsters tend to gather for parties in the open air and drink alcohol, known as ‘botellones.’ The problem in these secret raves is that nobody is usually in charge of controlling compliance with the hygiene and social distancing measures required by the Andalucian administration.

Both countries have reported over the last few days the highest number of positive cases since March, which in turn inflicts more restrictions on our lives. Both Boris Johnson and Pedro Sanchez, even though from opposite sides of the political spectrum, have a very similar route, trying to shape our ideas, mainly through propaganda. Generally, both societies are scared but the difference between March and now can be seen in how the public is reacting in a very similar way.It seems that they have been divided into two major groups; the sceptics and the government mainstream followers. The first are scared because their fundamental rights are being cut by a wave of regulations which they consider scientifically questionable and

SWEDEN: Has taken a very different route when facing the virus. the second are scared by the virus and believe that the trusted institutions know best how to protect our lives. An end to the pandemic doesn’t seem to be in sight
and the only options at the moment seem to be the vaccine or zero cases reported. Although there are claims that we will have the vaccine by 2021, it took many years to
develop other types of jabs and the flu vaccine is only 40 to 60 per cent successful. On the other hand, PCR tests are also not reliable as they detect a protein in blood which gives
many false positives and negatives. Therefore, the question arises, should tests to detect new infections be stopped? The main national media and broadcasting organisations in both countries have also contributed to the argument by the manner in which they are sensationalising the daily Covid figures. The facts seem to be made scary, to make the news more interesting and economical, which in turn makes it even harder to reach an unbiased judgement. The outcome leaves many questions to be answered, such as, what will happen next month if the number of infections is still the same? Will more businesses have to close? How will people be able to survive? Over the last few weeks, both groups have orchestrated strong arguments on social media platforms, but no one is really in the right or wrong. Or are they?

It is our in tention not to go over this. We suppose that you would apply for the new TIE, the Tarjeta de Identificaciòn de Extran jero. Then you apply to go off the UK tax books and on to the Spanish tax system. If you do not wish to do this, you will then have to abide by the European Union rule of 90 days visit in a period of 180 days, leaving for 90 days after that. It is true that Spain may choose to deem you a tax resident if you spend more than 183 days here.

Unity call for budget
WORKING TOGETHER: Carmen Calvo wants all parties to agree budget. IT is time for the minority Spanish government to present the 2021 budget to the Cortes in the hope that all parties will work together to allow for a measure of certainty unlike previous budgets where there was considerable difficulty in obtaining approval. Deputy Prime Minister Car men Calvo made it clear that she expects to ensure that pen sions and salaries of govern ment employees are not re duced or frozen as that would only make the economic situa tion worse. She insists that the govern ment is prepared to do what it can to satisfy the needs and ex pectations of the main opposi tion parties on the understand
ing that they accept the overall ‘blueprint’ of the budget and give it their support. Already, Ciudadanos has in dicated that it is unlikely to block the budget, but it is the PP which needs to come on board for the good of the coun try and not oppose the plans as up until now she says that they have basically followed a policy of “vetoing and not helping.” Much will depend on the po sition of the ERC (Catalan left wing proindependence party) which needs to consider whether there is any advantage to Catalonia in blocking the overall budget as that will not forward any of its plans. You’re being ‘gaslighted’
THIS week’s blurb has been partially drawn from the input provided by a member of my small band of faithful contributors to whom I shall be eternally grateful. It is for those of us consistently bamboozled by the pure guff put out by some of our main media outlets; those large numbers of reports that we know have almost no resemblance to actual events. Have no fear, you are not going crazy - you are being ‘Gaslighted’! Gaslighting is a form of brainwashing, aimed at controlling people by altering reality to a point where those targeted begin to doubt their own sanity. The term comes from a 1930’s play, where the main character drives his wife insane by slowly dimming the gas powered lights. When she notices the lights are dimming, he not only denies it, but convinces her it is her imagination to a point where she questions her own sanity. We are constantly being told by the media of situations which are at complete odds with what we are seeing with our own eyes. We see disruption and rioting and are told it is peaceful protesting. We see murderers running amok and

Particularly over the last 12 months, we have seen a positive tsunami of non-white actors and mixed marriages utterly disproportionately featured on almost 90 per cent of our TV advertising, and are informed that black actors and artists are still being discriminated against. We are told that integration and di-
versity is working, yet we witness whole towns being taken over by foreign cultures. We observe areas of our cities being terrorised by non-white gangs and are told it is the fault of the police. You spend your life trying to treat all individuals as equals and abhor racism, but are told you are a privileged racist purely because of the colour of your skin. You know you are not and that the accusation in itself is racist, but when
you try to defend yourself, you are told that your defence is proof of your racism. You are told you live in an environment of true freedom of speech, yet when you speak out you are accused of bigotry and discrimination. Worry not. You are not losing your minds. Crazy people don’t question their sanity. These media perpetrators deal in lies and psychological coercion. What their ultimate aims are is utterly beyond my comprehension. What I do know however is that we have to believe the evidence of our own eyes. Trust your own observations; believe what you perceive as the truth. You’re not crazy. You’re being Gaslighted. It’s Galbani, you moron…
BARRY DUKE THERE’S an excruciatingly funny UK blog called AdTurds that pokes fun at really stupid commercials and invites submissions from people who are pushed by bad ads to the brink of insanity. Responding to the invitation, this week I started a list beginning with ads for Galbani mozzarella which leave no doubt that the Dawn of the Dumb really is upon us. Depending on the version, either a dorky female or fella badly mangles the word Galbani. So you hear them saying ‘Galabanani’ or ridiculous versions thereof. Its purpose is, of course, to get us to stuff more of the brand down our gullets. But what it actually does is portray Brits as imbeciles who can’t get their tongues around a word as simple as Galbani. When the TV version debuted, it sparked a great deal of fury, with normally laid back folk losing all selfcontrol and saying things on discus-

second on my list is an ad for Skoda. You have a male voice asking ‘Simon, where do you work?’ Simon answers ‘Skoda’ and gets ticked off for not pronouncing it properly: ‘Shko-dah.’ Now if you work for a company, surely you’d know how to pronounce its name, unless
you’re as thick as porridge. It’s offensive because, like the Galbani ads, it presents Brits as morons. But the one that’s currently annoying me more than any other concerns the UK’s future outside of the EU. The government is currently spending gazillions trying to con-
vince people that leaving the EU will bring rainbows, kittens, bunnies and unicorns in abundance. So, what I hear multiple times a day on LBC is ‘The UK’s new start: let’s get going’ ads. They are a version of a statement issued in July by the ghastly Tory toff Michael Gove who said: “At the end of this year we are leaving the single market and Customs Union regardless of the type of agreement we reach with the EU. “This will bring changes and significant opportunities for which we all need to prepare … This is a new start for everyone in the UK - British and European citizens alike - so let’s get going.” Of all the ads that assume all Brits are goggle-eyed ninnyhammers, this one must surely take the biscuit if not the entire packet. ‘Significant opportunities my arse,’ as Jim Royle, of ‘The Royle Family’ fame would say.

But given how dreadful 2020 has been so far, does it matter when the new year begins - to make that new start and set goals? Whether it’s January or the end of March (the first choice of some with spring truly in the air, clocks springing forward and the feeling that spring gives in terms of hope) or September? Indeed, the tradition of computing the start of a new year with autumn was common to the lands of the Bible and around the

I’ve given up trying to find out MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man A QUESTION - how many people out of the thousands and thousands that were forced into quarantine after returning from abroad have been diagnosed with Covid-19? And if you can find that number maybe you can find out how many died? I can’t find this information anywhere. Maybe I’m looking in the wrong place. I want the confirmed official figures please. If they are not available I want to know why. I think people should be told the number. To be honest I’ve pretty much given up trying to find out. My friends continually ask how things are here and I have to tell them it’s not that bad. The Spanish government seem to be handling it so much better than the UK government who just seem to keep making the most ridiculous rules. New rules for England came into force on September 14 banning people from gathering in groups of more than six. But there are exceptions to the rule - such as people being allowed to meet in bigger groups at work, in school and for wed-
dings and funerals. The problem with all this is how do you police it? I read over the weekend that some bloke got fined 10 grand for throwing a big party. They might as well have fined him a million pounds because I bet there is absolutely no chance of him paying it. The dairy section of your favourite supermarket carries an array of ‘milk’ options: whole, reduced-fat, low-fat, fatfree, lactose-free, almond, soya, coconut and more. If you are looking for a liquid to pour on top of your cereal you have plenty of options. But are they all milk? No absolutely not! Because there is no such thing as soya milk. It’s soya juice. The same goes for almond, coconut, hemp, rice, cashew, hazelnut, and oat. Milk comes from mammals and there are no lactating almonds. I looked and have not seen any way to ‘milk’ any of these items. How did we ever cope? When we were much younger we went to a cafe or, if you were posh, a Lyons corner house. Remember them? You would order your tea or coffee and it came with either milk in it or maybe in a small jug. Lactose intolerance wasn’t invented yet. What happened? When did it all start? Do not believe in Defeat! ROBERT SHALLIS THE polar opposite to defeat, is of course, victory. To be triumphant and overcome is something that not only creates that exhilarating feeling of success, but allows one that sense of fulfilment that we have won and conquered, whatever aspect or area of our life we are working towards. So why is it, that we can witness so many amazing achievements by others and so often dismiss anything out of the ordinary for ourselves? You may be familiar with the quote. ‘You are your own worst enemy.’ You have possibly never really thought any more about that quote, other than the mere suggestion that it’s probably our own doing.
VICTORY: It is your attitude which is key to defeating obstacles. So, how do we go from defeat to victory and join the ranks of victors in life? Firstly, we need to take the battle to ‘ourselves’ but therein lies the problem. Aristotle was attributed to saying “It is a great victory if we can conquer our self” and that’s exactly what we need to do first, before doing anything else. We are getting in our own
way by creating reasons not to achieve. Draw a line through the word defeat and say goodbye to any thoughts that may entertain it, defeat is no longer welcome and does not serve us. Secondly, look at the mental obstacles you put in your own way, obstacles that stop you from progressing, and re-
move them. Most of them are excuses to justify the belief that you cannot achieve something. I was once asked, what if a person’s obstacles were just too big? My reply, ‘simply walk around them.’ This was just an analogy of course but the point is, there is always another way to get to where you want, as opposed to falling at the first hurdle and giving up. When you start to believe you can really achieve something, focus on the end result, don’t be afraid, and by doing so, the socalled obstacles, excuses and reasons why you cannot do something, start to become subject to defeat. Once you decide to stand up, attack it and not retreat, you will discover the bully boy tactics will begin to dissipate. It is your choice, either you break or the obstacle breaks. It is your battle to win and yours alone. However, going forward, your newly found belief in yourself will invariably reach a point where just
as things are progressing nicely, that old enemy starts to get in the way again, which is where your biggest challenge is. You may find yourself in a negative thought pattern of ‘oh well, I gave it a good try’ or ‘I did my best.’ Therefore, resigning yourself to defeat. This is when everything seems to be against you. This is the point where you make that crucial decision, give up or continue. The choice you make will determine your outcome. You may think and truly believe that the obstacles which you face in life are real, which of course, to some extent they are, whatever form they present. However, it’s your attitude towards them which is key to defeating them, and it starts with you. The quote ‘there is no victory without a battle’ is very true. Dear Euro Weekly News, It is such a shame to hear about all these businesses having to bow out of the summer season early due to low customer numbers. It has been really brave of them to try and push forward for so long as I understand it must have been so hard counting customers each day and hoping that they would make enough to pay the staff. The thing is, for all those who will still dare to come on holiday where are they going to go for entertainment? It’s just another nail in the coffin for the expats out there. So sorry to hear about El Oceano and over the weekend I also heard about The Boardwalk in Marbella. Such popular places. Let’s hope they have a fantastic next season to make up for it. AS of Monday, September 14, the UK has been under some new regulations with regard to the Covid virus. The most controversial being the dreaded ‘rule of six,’ which means that any social gatherings of more than six people will be against the law, apart from certain exemptions like work and education. Authorities will be able to dish out fines ranging from £100 to a whopping £3,200. But where on earth did they get this number from, six, why six people? Is it because they worked out the size of a normal place people would congregate and calculated that if they were all to be two metres apart they could only fit six people in there or was it just plucked from the sky? Another random number that dropped into headlines recently was eight, a reduction to eight days quarantine. That sounded a bit better and am sure would have made some people think that the UK government were moving forward. However, it seems to have been erased from their minds as quickly as it was suggested. It seems that there are also different rules throughout the UK just to make it even harder to understand. In Scotland, up to eight people from three households can meet indoors, up to six from two households in Northern Ireland and in Wales, up to four households can form an ‘extended household.’ Do that many households actually spend time with each other? Also, it is said six cannot go to the supermarket together, is that something that happens? That’s a lot of people going shopping. Anyway, some kind of activity is better than no activity and we can only hope they know what they are doing. It’s not going to be a very good family Christmas for some people.

No faith Dear Leapy, Although I’m not British, I am your fan. I have been following/reading your articles in Euro Weekly News in Spain for some two years, ever since we bought an apartment on the Costa del Sol. In fact, that paper would be totally worthless if it weren’t for your articles in which there used to be some reflection of reality and not just the official narrative ******** like in the rest. However, I’ve noticed that you have become uncritical, especially with this new medical tyranny that is present in a severe form in Spain. But you must have seen clips on social media involving police abuse of those not wearing a mask. I had a similar ‘experience’ where I was sitting with my husband on the bench in the main square and I was talking on the phone. While seated and talking I removed the mask. And then two bullies of the police approached us, treating me like a criminal. The worse one of the two grabbed my phone from me even though by then I duly put my mask on. To cut the story short, this is just disgraceful what’s happening in Spain and how people are treated. If only some of these events would be reported. Regards from me who has lost faith! V Koblar

They can also cause a loss of
essential nutrients, with the consequent appearance of deficiencies and symptoms that worsen our quality of life. According to Doctor Díaz, “the best thing is to choose a varied diet. The radical message is not healthy or sustainable. Would you stop eating ice cream forever? “The resulting weight loss will not be maintained when you abandon the restrictive diet.” Eating well does not mean only eating vegetables, or eating very little. Restrictions may cause the appearance or continua-
tion of an eating behaviour disorder. What type of diets should we be wary of? Doctor Carolina Pérez, Nutrition Specialist at Quirónsalud Murcia and Torrevieja, explains that, “miracle or express diets are not balanced, they may cause signs or symptoms due to essential nutrient deficiencies or due to the excess of others. But they all usually bring about weakness, lack of energy, flaccidity, drier, wrinkled skin, brittle nails, hair loss, bad breath and body odour, general listlessness,
drowsiness, apathy, headache, dizziness or blurred vision.” And all of these have an effect called ‘bounce back’ or ‘yo-yo,’ meaning that when we abandon the method, we quickly start to gain back the weight we lost, and even more, causing the accumulation of fat in areas of the body where we did not have so much, or it was not deposited before. Therefore, these are not recommendable at all. These diets, when maintained several times a year, may cause diabetes and thyroid problems.

Beat the bloat
WE’VE all had that feeling after a large meal or an indulgent holiday when your stomach can feel over-full or uncomfortable. It can be easy to assume this is simply because we have put on a pound or two, but sometimes even if we make all the right food choices the cause can just be simple bloating of the stomach. This condition has various causes, but thankfully can be easily treated. According to Healthline.com, ‘abdominal bloating occurs when the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is filled with air or gas. Most people describe bloating as feeling full, tight, or swollen in the abdomen. Your abdomen may also be swollen (distended), hard, and painful. Bloating is often accompanied by pain, excessive gas (flatulence), frequent burping or belching, abdominal rumbling or gurgles.’ The site claims the most common cause of bloating is gas which can enter the stomach by eating or drinking too quickly, as well as by taking in too many carbonated drinks. Chewing gum and smoking can also cause the problem. If this is

the case, try to slow down eating and cut back on fizzy drinks by eating more mindfully and taking time to chew and enjoy your food. Certain foods can also cause bloating, including beans and legumes, which can produce gas as they are broken down in the stomach. Instead, try to substitute lighter coloured lentils and black beans which can be more easily digested. Wheat can also cause bloating in those who have a gluten intolerance. If you suspect
this may be you, why not try some gluten-free alternatives for pasta and bread and see if this helps. While it may be good for us in many other respects, broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables can be hard for our bodies to digest, causing a build-up of gas. Instead, spinach, cucumbers, lettuce and sweet potato still contain plenty of vitamins, but without the painful side effects. Another unlikely culprit is some fruits. These include apples, which according to Healthline have, ‘been known to cause bloating and other digestive issues for some people.’ It seems ‘the culprits are fructose (which is a FODMAP) and the high fibre content. Fructose and fibre can both be fermented in the large intestine, and may cause gas and bloating.’ The website suggests switching raw apples for cooked ones which can be easier to digest. Finally, dairy products can be difficult for many people to digest, resulting in bloating and discomfort. If that is the case, why not try some dairy-free alternatives such as almond or soy milk and butter.

DECODING your ‘appetite pendulum’ can help you lose weight - without the need to diet. This is according to psychologist Dr Helen McCarthy who believes we can retrain our appetites and to recognise how much our food actually needs in order to shed the kilos. The author told the Daily Mail that we have all been trained to eat at certain times of the day, rather than eating when we are hungry and stopping when we are full. She claims the ‘appetite pendulum’ starts at 0 when hunger is neutral, moves into minus when hungry and plus when we begin to eat. And Dr McCarthy advised eating should only begin when hunger gets to minus three - definitely hungry stressing the importance of stopping at plus three - just full. The former NHS psychologist said many of us eat too much either because we’re enjoying the food and don’t want to stop, or we’re eating mindlessly. She encourages clients not
to give up any foods they love and devise their own meal plans rather than be dictated by a diet. The weight loss psychologist, who is also training other professionals in this way of thinking, says hunger signs aren’t a bad thing, pointing out that ‘mild hunger in the hour or so before your next meal or snack is healthy.’ She went on, “when you never feel mild hunger, your body may have been continuously digesting food, with no chance to stop and rest. Understanding and respecting mild hunger lets your gut work in the way that it evolved.” According to her research, “the hunger message to the brain is our body’s inbuilt natural way of letting us know we’ve used up the energy from our last meal, and that we’re having to switch over to using our stored energy, ie fat, so the hunger signals are switched off. “We can go a whole day, or month or lifetime, without actually getting hungry - and it’s one of the biggest reasons we put on weight.”
Mood influences EXTROVERTS who are positive will work on tr ying to further improve their mood, more than introverts. Spanish researchers at the Universidad Complutense in Madrid conducted a study which confirms that the mood of introverts is different from extroverts, especially when it comes to positive situations. Their study of 112 participants found those who fell in the ‘extrovert’ category after their initial questionnaire would want to improve their good mood and this would influence their decisions, when choosing which film to watch compared to introverts who are more conformist. The study also found both extroverts and introverts regulate their negative moods similarly.

People with bipolar disorder experience extreme changes in energy, activity, and sleep that are not typical for them. Just because you wake up happy, get grumpy in the middle of the day, and then end up happy again, it doesn’t mean you have bipolar disorder - no matter how often it happens to you! 2. Myth: Bipolar disorder can be cured through diet and exercise. Fact: Bipolar disorder is a lifelong illness and there currently is no cure. However, it can be well-managed with medication and therapy, by avoiding stress, and maintaining regular patterns of sleeping, eating, and exercise. 3. Myth: Mania is productive. You’re in a good mood and fun to be around. Fact: In some instances, a manic person may feel good
at first, but without treatment things can become chaotic and even terrifying. They may go on a big shopping spree, spending beyond their means. Some people become overly anxious or highly irritable, getting upset over small things and snapping at loved ones. A manic person may lose control of their thoughts and actions and even lose touch with reality. 4. Myth: People with bipolar disorder are always either manic or depressed. Fact: People with bipolar disorder can experience long periods of an even, balanced mood. They may sometimes experience what’s referred to as a ‘mixed episode,’ which has features of both mania and depression at the same time. 5. Myth: All medications for bipolar disorder are the same. Fact: It might take some trial and error to find the medication that works for you. There are several mood stabilisers, antidepressant medications that when combined can help treat bipolar disorder. Something that works for one person might not work for another. If someone tries one and it doesn’t work or has side effects, doesn’t mean it won’t work for someone else. Sometimes finding the right medication can take a while. 6. Myth: People with bipolar disorder cannot work. Fact: Bipolar disorder might make work challenging, but not impossible. Because bipolar disorder is associated with mood swings and dramatic changes in behaviour, it can be difficult for people with the illness to maintain being productive In their job. WHO WILL WIN?: Three bands left to win the big prize. FLYING FIT: Air Pilates set for Murcian town. On Saturday, September 19, the all-day event will work with a stirrup swing developing a wide range of creativity exercises for participants to teach in their own classes. Each Pilates exercise, from basic to more complex ones, on the ground taken to the swing and its variations in suspension, will give the students the necessary tools to teach their own classes as they show them how to work on their whole body. On Sunday, September 20,
the course will concentrate its efforts as it works with both swings. Work will be done on the stirrups, concentrating on more complex exercises which will require strength, coordination and control. And with the silk swing, students will perform more creative exercises developing fluid movements accompanied by the coordination of music. Timetable: Saturday from 10am to 7pm and Sunday from 10am to 2pm.
EMERGE ALICANTE will hold its Grand Final to crown a winner of its battle of the band’s competition. Almost 100 bands registered and submitted entries to the Alicante band promotional event. The final three bands; Gran Angular, Vera Green and Koala Lumpure, were selected by three judges chosen by Producciones Baltimore. The bands will perform a 25-minute set in the hopes of collecting the winning prize.
The event takes place at the Mediterranean Nights on Friday September 18, in the Volvo Zone of the Port of Alicante. The winning band will receive €500 and will participate in some of the music festivals organised by Producciones Baltimore. For the runners-up and third place, two cash prizes of €300 will be awarded. In case the jury is undecided on a winner during the final, the public in attendance will be given their chance to vote.

It has gone far too digital for some, although I’m sure VW would argue that the system makes for a more efficient driver experience. However, to me the system is not as intuitive as it could be and, until you’re fully used to it, it can feel like a distraction. On the road, performance brings no complaints with my 115 hp 2.0litre diesel providing a good turn of speed when required and impressive fuel consumption. Despite being a ‘dirty’ diesel it is now one of the cleanest units available with major reductions in nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions. With its smartly evolved design there is no mistaking this is a Golf, it retains that certain something special on the style front which appeals to so many drivers. At its price point the new Golf needed to deliver… it does!
