BENIDORM’S mayor Toni Perez recently declared that the resort is an ideal and safe destination for “digital nomads.” With Covid-19 already changing the working habits of many employees who are now teleworking with their companies’ blessing, Perez proposed Benidorm as the per fect alternative to working from their own homes. DENIA Town Hall and Aqualia have agreed to collaborate on detecting the presence of SARS-CoV-2 by analysing samples from local sewers. Early identification of the virus’s RNA will serve as an alert to the reappearance of Covid-19 amongst the local population, explained the town hall and Aqualia, which is responsible for Denia’s water supply and main drainage. Samples will be taken every two weeks and Aqualia will provide the town hall with the results of the analyses. These will give an immediate indication of the degree of infection inside the town and at the same time allow the authorities to plan ahead and take steps where necessary, municipal sources said.
A sweeter smell from Les Canyades TWO bioreactors costing €6.3 million will be installed at Campello’s Les Canyades landfill site. The Campello landfill will be the first in Alicante Province to use this pioneering technology which has been acquired by the Les Canyades concessionary FCC that runs the plant. This is one step further in the multinational’s €20 million plans to extend and modernise the plant which deals with the rubbish generated by Consorci Mare, a consortium of Marina Baja and Marina Alta towns as well as Campello. FCC no doubt trusts that the new machinery will finally put an end to nearby residents’ complaints of foul smells and polluted air that have not ceased since the plant opened in 12 years ago. Jose Vicente Ferriz, the Consorci Mare’s president and also mayor of Orxeta, recently visited Albal (Valencia) where the two bioreactors are now being built. The bioreactors will optimise the composting site using automated tedders to eliminate the bad smells associated with Les

An expensive white elephant
THE Ciudad de la Luz film studios will cost the Generalitat another €20 million in compulsory purchase payments. Built by the present regional government’s predecessors on the outskirts of Alicante City, the studios - which have become an expensive white elephant - were on course to become Spain’s Hollywood when they were inaugurated in 2005. They closed in 2012, after Britain’s Pinewood Studios complained to the European Commission that Ciudad de la Luz received public money from the regional government. The Alicante studios were then ordered to repay €256

IVA dip THE Covid-19 economic crisis combined to influence consumer spending in the Valencian Community even when lockdown ended, Spain’s tax authority Hacienda found. Regional earnings from the IVA (value added tax) plummeted by 27 per cent compared with the same period in 2019.
Much raving in the marsh THE Guardia Civil and Local Police broke up a rave last Sunday morning in Pego attended by people from all over Spain. It was held in an isolated rural area near the Pego-Oliva marsh on premises belonging to the organiser’s father and which were used, he told the Spanish media, without his knowledge. After the rave was announced on the social media, people turned up from as far away as Vigo (Galicia), Bilbao and Zamora, while the DJ was from Albacete. Local Police and the Guardia Civil intervened just after midnight upon receiving complaints about the noise, and then confronting ‘dozens’ of revellers all without masks. Sources quoted in the provincial Press revealed that police found at least 40 people there, although many were believed to have left as the police arrived, while others made a quick getaway.

Bag a bargain THE Charity Shop Calpe will be holding its half price late summer sale, starting on Monday September 21 until Thursday October 8. There will be lots of bargains to be had, as staff need to clear stock before introducing their autumn season clothes. The shop opened in 2002 with the aim of donating to various charities in Calpe and causes that benefit the people of the town. Gender-inclusive buildings for Calpe A NEW by-law from Calpe’s Equality and Urban Development departments requires the incorporation of gender perspectives when constructing new buildings. Details of the initiative which will apply to dwellings, shops, offices and public buildings will be on view until September 30 on Calpe Town Hall’s website. “The perception of insecurity diminishes the independence of
the persons using the municipality’s spaces,” the website explains. “This perception of fear needs to be analysed, taking gender implications into account.” Urban development should consider equality and safety issues from the point of view of gender, as design and planning can increase or reduce the sensation of security, the town hall argued. “This brings us closer to

Prospective clients likely to visit Benidorm in the coming months will be families making a weekend getaway and according to Hosbec, the Costa Blanca hoteliers’ association, hotel owners and chains are weighing up the possibility of weekday closures. Few firm decisions have been made so far, Hosbec said, as some are discouraged by the complications involved in adapting employees’ contracts. Both Hosbec and the Visit Benidorm tourist board have admitted that the coming months will not be easy. The resort’s habitual national and international tourists during the low season are principally the retired and elderly, who are the most susceptible to Covid-19, they admit.

Phone in, don’t come in DENIA’S Health Department (DSD), which covers the Marina Alta, is continuing the telephone procedures introduced after lockdown ended. Antonio Barcelo, the DSD’s Primary Care director, pointed out that these same procedures are being applied throughout the country, on the orders of the central government’s Ministry of Health. Barcelo also called on the Marina Alta population to be understanding as the summer ‘avalanche’ of Covid patients in coastal areas had occupied medical professionals in all basic health sectors. Instead of attending primary care centres after making an appointment, nonCovid patients will be attended by their doctors via telephone or in person if this is considered necessary. At present, Barcelo explained, primary care personnel are diagnosing and treating Covid patients as well as attending to emergencies and habitual health centre assistance including blood tests, dressings and warfarin anti-coagulation control. The Primary Care director also reminded Marina Alta patients that the DSD now has a centralised telephone number 965 648 604 - which can be used by patients who suspect they have Covid-19 as well as those wanting an appointment with their primary care doctor.

The non-profit, voluntary association makes and distributes hand knitted breast prostheses. This lovely charity has representatives in Costa Del Sol and southern Costa Blanca who provide the hand-made prostheses, free of charge, to women who have had mastectomies. EWN spoke to an English woman living in the Costa Blanca area, who had a double mastectomy this year, “Knitted

Key projects delayed CALPE Town Hall must halt two key developments on technical grounds. The Marina de Ifac project, which included Calpe’s future business park, and an agreement allowing a property-owner to exchange La Manzanera land for municipally-owned plots in Cocentari are to be annulled at the next plenary council meeting. The Generalitat informed Calpe Town Hall that the planning modifications required for both projects are the competence of the regional government and not the municipality.
The town hall has preferred to cancel the project and start afresh by correcting flaws in the original applications. According to statements from the PSOE opposition party quoted in the local Spanish media, it was clear that the two annulled projects would be the star topic over the next months. Meanwhile, Compromis spokesman Ximo Perles admitted that the party felt “uncomfortable” about hitches to agreements it had agreed to. “But we understand that any flaws need to be corrected,” Perles added.
And for the first time in months, Knitted Knockers have been able to send a total of 18 pink parcels to the Philippines and four parcels to UAE. Help for La Vila businesses VILLAJOYOSA Town Hall published a list of small business-owners and the self-employed eligible for municipal help to offset the Covid-19 crisis. Those who have been excluded have until tomorrow Friday, September 18, to appeal against the decision, to amend their application or present further documentation. “This municipal assistance is vital to the local business community in a difficult year,” said Villajoyosa’s Commerce councillor Josep Castiñeira, who added that he hoped the grants would reach as many people as possible. Altea organises its cat colonies ALTEA’S Health and Animal Welfare departments are continuing the sterilisation programme for the town’s strays. Jose Luis Leon Gascon, who heads both departments, announced that the town hall is providing hi-viz jackets and ID cards for volunteers taking part in the Trap-Neuter-Return (CES) programme. The project has the backing of Altea’s vets who are working together, setting out guidelines to ensure that the programme can be carried out smoothly and the local colonies survive in the best possible conditions. Leon Gascon praised the volunteers for the success of previous CES campaigns, assuring them that the town hall was listening to their suggestions to understand and improve the cat colonies’ needs.
NEUTERING PROGRAMME: ID cards for Altea volunteers. “The IDs can be obtained through the associations that are registered with Altea Town Hall,” the councillor explained to members of local animal protection associations unable to attend the latest town hall meeting. The town hall allocated a €5,000 budget to the programme, but this has

New wheels for Campello CAMPELLO Town Hall authorised the purchase of four vehicles for Proteccion Civil and the Social Services department. One of the Proteccion Civil vehicles is a four-wheel drive with double cabin and the other a nine-seater van, both specifically chosen for their suitability for the volunteers’ tasks which include emergency callouts. Social Services now have two hybrid vehicles which will be used for the department’s personnel when making home visits or carrying out community work.
Pedreguer hangs on to its surplus PEDREGUER’S mayor, Sergi Ferrus, announced that the town hall will not cede its surplus capital to the government. Ferrus, who belongs to the Compromis party, explained he had taken this decision after carefully studying the decree approved by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) and the central government. The mayor had also taken into account a report from the municipal auditor who advised against handing over the town hall’s surplus cash. “The money in the municipal kitty belongs to the local population,” said Ferrus.
“We were able to fill the kitty over the years thanks to the efforts of our residents and municipal thrift and efficiency. We have always, always maintained that the surplus should be administered by the town halls themselves,” the mayor declared. By the end of last year, Pedreguer had paid off all its debts, he added: “They can’t take away what we have gradually saved.” The surplus was essential for guaranteeing the investments that Pedreguer needs for projects and infrastructure to boost the economy and work, as well as guaranteeing the town hall’s liquidity, Ferrus argued.

Dodgy lawyer passed drugs A LAWYER visiting Picassent (Valencia) jail was arrested while attempting to pass 14 grammes of heroin to a prisoner. According to the local Spanish press, the authorities suspected for some time that the prisoner, classed as dangerous and with a long record for conflictive incidents, was dealing drugs. They concluded that
they were brought into the prison by the lawyer who as well as being practically his only visitor, also had family links with him. As his latest visit came to an end, the lawyer asked the prison guard on duty in the visiting room to hand his client a thick pile of documents relating to the case. When the guard agreed but said that the
papers would need to be inspected, the lawyer became ‘visibly agitated’ and tried unsuccessfully to retrieve them. A search revealed a camouflaged wrapper containing 14 grammes of heroin near the bottom of the pile of documents. Although this had a street price of around €900 it would have fetched double that amount inside the prison, sources said.

NATIONAL charity Age in Spain has helped over 8,000 Brits with online and one-to-one information and support in the first three months of its Residency Helpline Project. Thousands have used the Residency Helpline website for its accessible and accurate information on residency issues and resources. The Residency Helpline volunteers and staff have provided some 280 individuals with direct one-to-one support tailored to their specific circumstances by phone or email. They have also directly supported the applications of nearly 180 Brits applying for residency for the first time or exchanging their residency document for the new TIE, the foreigners’ identity card for UK citizens in Spain. Hazel, a British woman in her 50’s who lives in Catalonia, was one person who successfully applied for the TIE. “I found the guidance and support I received from Age in Spain to be invaluable when I was applying for Spanish residency,” she said. “I had been struggling on my own for a few months, and needed help to navigate through the confusing regulations.”

DIRECT HELP: Residency Helpline volunteers and staff provide one-to-one support via phone or email. Hazel has a disability and has been finding it difficult to find work. She also had issues with registering for the ‘padron,’ a council’s list of local residents, and with her old residency certificate. “After talking with Age in Spain I was able to present the right information and go through the process quickly and easily, with a positive result at the end,” she reported. Sarah, who retired to Spain some years ago, also needed help as she doesn’t have an email address and couldn’t access the appropriate forms and
book an appointment. “I’ve been living in Spain for years and never had to worry about any of this stuff. Age in Spain helped me to understand the process and they sent me the forms,” said Sarah. The Residency Helpline was set up with financial support from the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office through the UK National Support Fund. “This service is helping to reach the most vulnerable people, who through no fault of their own, need help to sort out their residency,”
commented Project Director Helen Weir. “Our service is free, confidential and makes a real difference, so that when the transition period of the UK leaving the EU finishes, all British nationals in Spain can take advantage of the Withdrawal agreement to protect their rights as residents of Spain.” The Helpline covers all of Spain, with an outreach service for people who need extra support in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands. The charity is currently recruiting volunteers to do home visits to assist those
who need extra support with booking appointments online, filling out forms and getting paperwork ready for their appointments. TWO Welsh comedians have collaborated to publish a new collection of jokes, raising money for the NHS in Wales and Torrevieja Hospital in Spain. Gags for the NHS, a book by Phil Evans and Dilwyn Phillips, has been published by Y Lolfa and is already proving that laughter is the best medicine. “Having been an inpatient in Torrevieja hospital on several occasions since moving to Spain I realised how tough it can be working in the hospitals, especially with the current pandemic and how much public support is needed to boost morale. “This is my way of saying thank you,” explained Dilwyn. The author, brought up in Pontarddulais, Wales, now living in Los Montesinos, said, “All proceeds of the sales of this book in Spain will be donated to the hospital. “As well as donating to the coffers of the hospital, buying this book will provide some much-needed escapism and hopefully will bring smiles to people’s faces.” EWN had the pleasure of speaking to Dilwyn after the book’s release. The softly spoken Welshman started life as a civil engineer, or “the graveyard of

all ambition” as Dilwyn describes it, before moving onto life as a teacher. Following early retirement, Dilwyn ended up taking a part-time job in a local Welsh publisher and it was working there
that gave him his first foray into the world of joke books. At the time, the publishers were concentrating on more conventional subjects such as Welsh railways and castles, but Dilwyn suggested an en-
tirely different path. And his Welsh joke books were born. The success of his books drew the attention of fellow comic, and Gags for the NHS collaborator, Phil Evans. The two, who have yet to meet in person, connected on the internet around six years ago via an appreciation of each other’s work and last April the idea for this book was born. It was actually Dilwyn’s wife that planted the seed for this project. One day she commented that, “you spend so much time in Torrevieja Hospital, you should raise some money for it!” explained Dilwyn. And that’s what he and Phil are doing now. Phillips is now an author of several popular joke collections. As well as gags and puns, this collection contains several funny stories with a medical twist. Gags for the NHS, which is priced at €5, is available in selected shops including Farmacia Fos, Los Montesinos, Citreon Garage, Benijofar, A Fancy That Torreta, Torrevieja or directly from Dilwyn Phillips. When EWN asked Dilwyn to sum up the book in four words, the wonderfully witty Welshman said it will “have you in stitches!”

But due to government restrictions, organisers have been forced to make changes to ensure the show goes ahead. Palace owner, Christine Climent said: “As we can’t have live singers on stage, due to Covid restrictions, and knowing how important the SML events are to be able to continue to help as many animals as possible, more so now than ever due to Covid, we at Benidorm Palace have decided to hold an International Magic Gala. “Five of the most prestigious illusionists in Europe will be performing, you won’t believe your eyes.”

Obligation to pay inheritance tax in Spain In respect of assets inherited abroad
QUESTION: I am a resident of Spain and have received an inheritance from my parents in the United Kingdom. Do I have to pay taxes in Spain and if so what taxes and where should I pay? This is an enquiry that we receive on a fairly regular basis and in today’s arti-
cle, we want to give basic information to people who, being tax residents in
Spain, are beneficiaries of an inheritance consisting of assets located abroad (ie outside of Spain). In Spain the Inheritance and Gift Tax (ISD or IHT) is paid by each of the beneficiaries: heirs, beneficiaries of a legacy and if he or she is a tax resident in Spain (their nationality is irrelevant) according to article 6 of the IHT law, they will have a personal obligation to pay taxes in Spain in respect of the inherited assets, regardless of where they are located, even if the assets are located abroad. • Where to pay. Even if you are a resident, if the deceased was not a tax resident in Spain, you must present details of your inheritance and pay
tax to the delegation of the Tax Agency in Madrid. But it is very important to know that, if you are a resident of Spain, you can benefit from the tax credits of the autonomous community where you reside, even if the deceased person was a resident of a third party country, which is not part of the European Union. As mentioned in previous articles there is a prohibition on discrimination in the payment of Inheritance Tax to residents in third party countries outside the EU and the decisions of the Spanish Supreme Court in this regard are important. • How to do it. Even if the assets are abroad, the tax declara-
tion must be submitted accompanied by the documentation proving the succession, assets and value. The declaration should include: The Death certificate, if applicable, translated and apostilled (if not a Spanish certificate). Proof of inheritance of title by copy of the Will and confirmation that it is the last valid testament. Documents proving the assets involved are part of the inheritance and their value. Thus, if you are a tax resident in Spain, regardless of your nationality, you must submit and pay the Inheritance Tax if you inherit any asset or right, even if it is abroad, as indi-

Euro Weekly News highlighted Project Costa’s aim to support the less fortunate in the area, and the response has been phenomenal. We believe in serving only the freshest, most zestful food to the homeless,” said Steven. “We don’t use past ‘sell-by date’ foods from supermarkets because we believe the homeless have suffered enough and should have proper diet and nutrition.” As EWN went to press, Steven was preparing 40 dishes of pasta salad to give to the homeless from a designated distribution point. “This will be the first distribution so we don’t really know how many people will come, but we are getting the word out there,” said Arne. Project Costa’s Facebook page already has 293 followers and is approaching 300 likes. “This means we’re clearly not the only ones who want to
change the world,” posted Soeten. “Project Costa seeks to inspire people, wherever they are, by showing how much small acts of love, kindness and compassion mean to a person in need. “It may be by hugging someone who rarely receives affection, or inviting an elderly or lonely neighbour for dinner, or giving a homeless man a pair of new socks, helping lift a pram off the bus, or carrying the shopping for a stranger who is struggling. “It doesn’t matter what we do, how we do it or where we do it, as long as we do it. Let’s just do it. Both countries have reported over the last few days the highest number of positive cases since March, which in turn inflicts more restrictions on our lives. Both Boris Johnson and Pedro Sanchez, even though from opposite sides of the political spectrum, have a very similar route, trying to shape our ideas, mainly through propaganda. Generally, both societies are scared but the difference between March and now can be seen in how the public is reacting in a very similar way.It seems that they have been divided into two major groups; the sceptics and the government mainstream followers. Although there are claims that we will have the vaccine by 2021, it took many years to develop other types of jabs and the flu vaccine is only 40 to 60 per cent successful. On the other hand,
PCR tests are also not reliable as they detect a protein in blood which gives many false positives and negatives. Therefore, the question arises, should tests to detect new infections be
stopped? The main national media and broadcasting organisations in both countries have also contributed to the argument by the manner in which they are sensationalising the daily Covid figures. The facts seem to be made scary, to make the news more interesting and economical, which in turn makes it even harder to reach an unbiased judgement. The outcome leaves many questions to be answered, such as, what will happen next month if the number of infections is still the same? Will more businesses have to close? How will people be able to survive? Over the last few weeks, both groups have orchestrated strong arguments on social media platforms, but no one is really in the right or wrong. Or are they?

ALICANTE AIRPORT: Fewer planes but fewer problem passengers. IN 2019 the Alicante Airport authorities had to deal with 192 incidents involving antisocial passengers. This was more than any other Spanish airport, but as the number of passengers travelling for pleasure or business plunged, so did the number of incidents. These fell to just 15 between January and the end of July according to Spain’s State Aviation Security Agency (AESA). Two people were also removed from their aircraft for disruptive behaviour, compared with 32 in 2019. Madrid Airport headed the list of trouble-
makers during this same seven-month period, followed by Alicante, Malaga, Tenerife South and Gran Canaria. Palma airport, which had the second-highest number of problem passengers last year registered only three. Madrid also had six unruly passengers taken off their plane, followed by Malaga (five), Alicante, Fuerteventura and Manises (Valencia) with two each. Overall, AESA registered 141 incidents between January and late July with Spanish travellers causing the most trouble, followed by the British, Germans and Romanians.

Spending to ensure safety AS pupils returned to school, Altea’s Education councillor Vicenta Perez announced that the 2020-2021 academic year began with relative normality. “It was an atypical first day because the situation we are in is different from any other year,” she said. The councillor revealed that the region’s Education department has spent heavily with the intention of guaranteeing the quality and safety “that Altea’s children are entitled to.” The town hall has spent €300,000 on adapting classrooms, taking on more teachers so that class numbers can be reduced, while increasing cleaning and disinfection schedules in accordance with Covid-19 health and safety regulations. It also received a €94,150 subsidy from the Generalitat.

Slippery zebras eliminated ZEBRA crossings in the town centre are being made safer, particularly those on steep roads. Many have several layers of paint, making them slippery during wet weather, and municipal employees are currently stripping these off. Time to step forward CALPE Town Hall intends to provide the owners of closed nightlife venues with economic help. Calpe mayor Ana Sala declared that the provincial, regional and central administrations should “step forward” with direct assistance to prevent the definitive closure of venues affected by anti-Covid measures. The town hall will channel this help via the Plan Resiste introduced to help the owners of businesses that had to shut during the State of Alarm.
The planned amounts will range from €1,000 to €2,000 depending on the number of employees affected by the closures, with grants payable to the owners of licensed discotheques, disco-pubs, cocktail bars and karaoke bars with or without live music who were forced to close by the regional government’s decree of August 17. Once Sala’s plan has obtained council approval, application forms downloaded from the town hall’s website should be left with the town hall’s Registro.

MEMBERS of Teulada-Moraira’s Asociacion Hosteleria seconded last week’s protest in Madrid, highlighting the hospitality industry’s estimated losses of €40 billion. According to the Hosteleria de España-España de Noche association, 85,000 now-closed venues affected by the forced closures precipitated by anti-Covid health and safety measures will never reopen. The local association’s members, who gathered in the centre of Moraira to express their own concerns and fears, were joined by Adrian Ruiz, the town hall’s councillor for Tourism.

Former Francoist minister Mariano Navarro Rubio built a villa here, enclosing an adjoining Roman fish factory which can be accessed by the public now that his descendants have moved back a perimeter wall. Javea-Denia NEWS Plans for lighthouse site ALICANTE Province’s Ports authority has handed over Javea’s lighthouse to the town hall for the next 15 years. Hardly a coincidence FEARS that the spate of Marina Alta fires were intentional abated recently as time passed passed without another blaze. These were soon rekindled after a security camera at a Cala de la Barraca villa filmed several flashes in a nearby stand of pines, followed by a fire. This was the same place where fire broke out two weeks earlier and the CCTV footage appears to confirm suspicions that this, as well as three other fires in Javea and Gata, were deliberate. Residents, fearing a repetition, managed to control the fire as the vegetation was damp, thanks to the rain which fell that day, while the Balcon al Mar volunteer firemen were soon on the scene, together with the Denia fire brigade, Local Police and Guardia Civil. This and the other fires last month all occurred in a triangle formed by Javea, Gata and the Jesus Pobre road that links both town. The authorities, believed at the time the August fires were too much of a coincidence, and are now continuing their investigations after the latest incident.

Ukraine and Spain THE governments of Ukraine and Spain held a formal meeting to discuss areas of economic cooperation and how to expand their relationship. In the first six months of the year, total trade between the two countries amounted to just under €1 billion with the Ukraine taking the lion’s share at €700 million. Although it does have reasonable reserves of natural gas, the Ukraine lost a huge amount when Russia annexed the Crimea and is now looking to increase energy efficiency at which Spain has developed significant expertise.

It is understood that almost 140 countries are discussing and negotiat ing the first major rewrite of interna tional tax rules in a generation to ac count for the rise of huge digital companies such as Amazon, Facebook and Google, all of which are American. They were expecting the Organisa tion for Economic Cooperation and
Development (OECD) to come to a de cision within a few weeks so that new rules will apply in 2021, but the likeli hood of achieving this appears to be slight. European confidence was dented when Washington asked for a pause in the talks earlier this year as it be lieves there is room for a voluntary role for American companies. “It’s very clear, the United States don’t want a digital tax (deal) at the OECD. So, they are making obstacles which prevent us from reaching an agreement even though the technical

This is not necessarily an idle threat as although the Republicans have a small majority in the House of Congress, the Democrats have a larg er majority in the House of Repre sentatives, but this could all change in this November’s elections.

Unity call for budget
WORKING TOGETHER: Carmen Calvo wants all parties to agree budget. IT is time for the minority Spanish government to present the 2021 budget to the Cortes in the hope that all parties will work together to allow for a measure of certainty unlike previous budgets where there was considerable difficulty in obtaining approval. Deputy Prime Minister Car men Calvo made it clear that she expects to ensure that pen sions and salaries of govern ment employees are not re duced or frozen as that would only make the economic situa tion worse. She insists that the govern ment is prepared to do what it can to satisfy the needs and ex pectations of the main opposi tion parties on the understand
ing that they accept the overall ‘blueprint’ of the budget and give it their support. Already, Ciudadanos has in dicated that it is unlikely to block the budget, but it is the PP which needs to come on board for the good of the coun try and not oppose the plans as up until now she says that they have basically followed a policy of “vetoing and not helping.” Much will depend on the po sition of the ERC (Catalan left wing proindependence party) which needs to consider whether there is any advantage to Catalonia in blocking the overall budget as that will not forward any of its plans. Running out of sweets SEVERAL months ago, Tesco in the UK wrote to suppliers asking for significant discounts on wholesale prices as it intended to match hundreds of prices with German discount supermarket Aldi. Although many companies bowed to this pressure, it would appear that the world’s largest producer of ‘gummy’ sweets Haribo has not agreed to any discount. Whilst both companies are coy about the situation, reports in The Grocer suggest that Tesco is running out of some of the most popular sweets.

You’re being ‘gaslighted’
THIS week’s blurb has been partially drawn from the input provided by a member of my small band of faithful contributors to whom I shall be eternally grateful. It is for those of us consistently bamboozled by the pure guff put out by some of our main media outlets; those large numbers of reports that we know have almost no resemblance to actual events. Have no fear, you are not going crazy - you are being ‘Gaslighted’! Gaslighting is a form of brainwashing, aimed at controlling people by altering reality to a point where those targeted begin to doubt their own sanity. The term comes from a 1930’s play, where the main character drives his wife insane by slowly dimming the gas powered lights. When she notices the lights are dimming, he not only denies it, but convinces her it is her imagination to a point where she questions her own sanity. We are constantly being told by the media of situations which are at complete odds with what we are seeing with our own eyes. We see disruption and rioting and are told it is peaceful protesting. We see murderers running amok and
GOING CRAZY?: Trust your own observations and believe what you perceive as the truth. killing people while screaming Allah Akbar and are told they are not terrorist related. Particularly over the last 12 months, we have seen a positive tsunami of non-white actors and mixed marriages utterly disproportionately featured on almost 90 per cent of our TV advertising, and are informed that black actors and artists are still being discriminated against. We are told that integration and di-
versity is working, yet we witness whole towns being taken over by foreign cultures. We observe areas of our cities being terrorised by non-white gangs and are told it is the fault of the police. You spend your life trying to treat all individuals as equals and abhor racism, but are told you are a privileged racist purely because of the colour of your skin. You know you are not and that the accusation in itself is racist, but when
you try to defend yourself, you are told that your defence is proof of your racism. You are told you live in an environment of true freedom of speech, yet when you speak out you are accused of bigotry and discrimination. Worry not. You are not losing your minds. Crazy people don’t question their sanity. These media perpetrators deal in lies and psychological coercion. What their ultimate aims are is utterly beyond my comprehension. What I do know however is that we have to believe the evidence of our own eyes. Trust your own observations; believe what you perceive as the truth. You’re not crazy. You’re being Gaslighted. It’s Galbani, you moron…
BARRY DUKE THERE’S an excruciatingly funny UK blog called AdTurds that pokes fun at really stupid commercials and invites submissions from people who are pushed by bad ads to the brink of insanity. Responding to the invitation, this week I started a list beginning with ads for Galbani mozzarella which leave no doubt that the Dawn of the Dumb really is upon us. Depending on the version, either a dorky female or fella badly mangles the word Galbani. So you hear them saying ‘Galabanani’ or ridiculous versions thereof. Its purpose is, of course, to get us to stuff more of the brand down our gullets. But what it actually does is portray Brits as imbeciles who can’t get their tongues around a word as simple as Galbani. When the TV version debuted, it sparked a great deal of fury, with normally laid back folk losing all selfcontrol and saying things on discus-

you’re as thick as porridge. It’s offensive because, like the Galbani ads, it presents Brits as morons. But the one that’s currently annoying me more than any other concerns the UK’s future outside of the EU. The government is currently spending gazillions trying to con-
vince people that leaving the EU will bring rainbows, kittens, bunnies and unicorns in abundance. So, what I hear multiple times a day on LBC is ‘The UK’s new start: let’s get going’ ads. They are a version of a statement issued in July by the ghastly Tory toff Michael Gove who said: “At the end of this year we are leaving the single market and Customs Union regardless of the type of agreement we reach with the EU. “This will bring changes and significant opportunities for which we all need to prepare … This is a new start for everyone in the UK - British and European citizens alike - so let’s get going.” Of all the ads that assume all Brits are goggle-eyed ninnyhammers, this one must surely take the biscuit if not the entire packet. ‘Significant opportunities my arse,’ as Jim Royle, of ‘The Royle Family’ fame would say.

I’ve given up trying to find out MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man A QUESTION - how many people out of the thousands and thousands that were forced into quarantine after returning from abroad have been diagnosed with Covid-19? And if you can find that number maybe you can find out how many died? I can’t find this information anywhere. Maybe I’m looking in the wrong place. I want the confirmed official figures please. If they are not available I want to know why. I think people should be told the number. To be honest I’ve pretty much given up trying to find out. My friends continually ask how things are here and I have to tell them it’s not that bad. The Spanish government seem to be handling it so much better than the UK government who just seem to keep making the most ridiculous rules. New rules for England came into force on September 14 banning people from gathering in groups of more than six. But there are exceptions to the rule - such as people being allowed to meet in bigger
groups at work, in school and for weddings and funerals. The problem with all this is how do you police it? I read over the weekend that some bloke got fined 10 grand for throwing a big party. They might as well have fined him a million pounds because I bet there is absolutely no chance of him paying it. The dairy section of your favourite supermarket carries an array of ‘milk’ options: whole, reduced-fat, low-fat, fatfree, lactose-free, almond, soya, coconut and more. If you are looking for a liquid to pour on top of your cereal you have plenty of options. But are they all milk? No absolutely not! Because there is no such thing as soya milk. It’s soya juice. The same goes for almond, coconut, hemp, rice, cashew, hazelnut, and oat. Milk comes from mammals and there are no lactating almonds. I looked and have not seen any way to ‘milk’ any of these items. How did we ever cope? When we were much younger we went to a cafe or, if you were posh, a Lyons corner house. Remember them? You would order your tea or coffee and it came with either milk in it or maybe in a small jug. Lactose intolerance wasn’t invented yet. What happened? When did it all start?

Dear Euro Weekly News, It is such a shame to hear about all these businesses having to bow out of the summer season early due to low customer numbers. It has been really brave of them to try and push forward for so long as I understand it must have been so hard counting customers each day and hoping that they would make enough to pay the staff. The thing is, for all those who will still dare to come on holiday where are they going to go for entertainment? It’s just another nail in the coffin for the expats out there. So sorry to hear about El Oceano and over the weekend I also heard about The Boardwalk in Marbella. Such popular places. Let’s hope they have a fantastic next season to make up for it. AS of Monday, September 14, the UK has been under some new regulations with regard to the Covid virus. The most controversial being the dreaded ‘rule of six,’ which means that any social gatherings of more than six people will be against the law, apart from certain exemptions like work and education. Authorities will be able to dish out fines ranging from £100 to a whopping £3,200. But where on earth did they get this number from, six, why six people? Is it because they worked out the size of a normal place people would congregate and calculated that if they were all to be two metres apart they could only fit six people in there or was it just plucked from the sky? Another random number that dropped into headlines recently was eight, a reduction to eight days quarantine. That sounded a bit better and am sure would have made some people think that the UK government were moving forward. However, it seems to have been erased from their minds as quickly as it was suggested. It seems that there are also different rules throughout the UK just to make it even harder to understand. In Scotland, up to eight people from three households can meet indoors, up to six from two households in Northern Ireland and in Wales, up to four households can form an ‘extended household.’ Do that many households actually spend time with each other? Also, it is said six cannot go to the supermarket together, is that something that happens? That’s a lot of people going shopping. Anyway, some kind of activity is better than no activity and we can only hope they know what they are doing. It’s not going to be a very good family Christmas for some people.

No faith Dear Leapy, Although I’m not British, I am your fan. I have been following/reading your articles in Euro Weekly News in Spain for some two years, ever since we bought an apartment on the Costa del Sol. In fact, that paper would be totally worthless if it weren’t for your articles in which there used to be some reflection of reality and not just the official narrative ******** like in the rest. However, I’ve noticed that you have become uncritical, especially with this new medical tyranny that is present in a severe form in Spain. But you must have seen clips on social media involving police abuse of those not wearing a mask. I had a similar ‘experience’ where I was sitting with my husband on the bench in the main square and I was talking on the phone. While seated and talking I removed the mask. And then two bullies of the police approached us, treating me like a criminal. The worse one of the two grabbed my phone from me even though by then I duly put my mask on. To cut the story short, this is just disgraceful what’s happening in Spain and how people are treated. If only some of these events would be reported. Regards from me who has lost faith! V Koblar

Beat the bloat
WE’VE all had that feeling after a large meal or an indulgent holiday when your stomach can feel over-full or uncomfortable. It can be easy to assume this is simply because we have put on a pound or two, but sometimes even if we make all the right food choices the cause can just be simple bloating of the stomach. This condition has various causes, but thankfully can be easily treated. According to Healthline.com, ‘abdominal bloating occurs when the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is filled with air or gas. Most people describe bloating as feeling full, tight, or swollen in the abdomen. Your abdomen may also be swollen (distended), hard, and painful. Bloating is often accompanied by pain, excessive gas (flatulence), frequent burping or belching, abdominal rumbling or gurgles.’ The site claims the most
common cause of bloating is gas which can enter the stomach by eating or drinking too quickly, as well as by taking in too many carbonated drinks. Chewing gum and smoking can also cause the problem. If this is the case, try to slow down eating and cut back on fizzy drinks by eating more mindfully and taking time to chew and enjoy your food. Certain foods can also cause bloating, including beans and legumes, which can produce gas as they are broken down in the stomach. Instead, try to substitute lighter coloured lentils and black beans which can be more easily digested. Wheat can also cause bloating in those who have a gluten intolerance. If you suspect this may be you, why not try some gluten-free alternatives for pasta and bread and see if this helps. While it may be good for us in many other respects, broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables can be hard
for our bodies to digest, causing a build-up of gas. Instead, spinach, cucumbers, lettuce and sweet potato still contain plenty of vitamins, but without the painful side effects. Another unlikely culprit is some fruits. These include apples, which according to Healthline have, ‘been known to cause bloating and other digestive issues for some people.’ It seems ‘the culprits are fructose (which is a FODMAP) and the high fibre content. Fructose and fibre can both be fermented in the large intestine, and may cause gas and bloating.’ The website suggests switching raw apples for cooked ones which can be easier to digest. Finally, dairy products can be difficult for many people to digest, resulting in bloating and discomfort. If that is the case, why not try some dairy-free alternatives such as almond or soy milk and butter.

ROAD TEST by Mark Slack LAUNCHING the latest version of the ever-popular Golf this year has marked two anniversaries for the German car maker. It is 75 years since a 28-yearold British Army Major, Ivan Hirst, was given responsibility for leading the reshaping of VW’s largely destroyed Wolfsburg plant back into a civilian car factory. By the time Hirst left there was a modern factory, ready to go, with a labour force, a German management and a product that was proven. That product was the iconic Beetle, and that German management and workforce made VW a worldwide automotive success story. The latest Golf is in its eighth generation, 45 years since it first launched. It has

GOLF 8: Retains a certain something special. become a classless car loved by everyone from ordinary families to the rich and famous. Golf 8 starts at €26,143 (£23,300) on-theroad for the lead-in Life model with a perky 1.0-litre TSi engine under the bonnet. Standard fare includes climate control, powered and heated door mirrors, automatic lights and wipers plus automatic dimming rear view mirror, alloy wheels, navigation and a plethora of safety kit.
T h r e e petrol engines - 110 hp,1.0-litre threecylinder and 130 hp or 150 hp 1.5-litre four- cylinder - plus a 1.5-litre mild hybrid and 115 hp or 150 hp 2.0-litre diesel. Transmissions are six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG dual clutch automatic. Despite some noticeable minor cost-cutting measures - the lack of a gas strut on the bonnet, no cover over the cup holders in the centre console, visible key apertures on the door handles and a few others - there is still that solid, durable and quality feel to this latest Golf. It has gone far too digital for some, although I’m sure VW would argue that the
system makes for a more efficient driver experience. However, to me the system is not as intuitive as it could be and, until you’re fully used to it, it can feel like a distraction. On the road, performance brings no complaints with my 115 hp 2.0litre diesel providing a good turn of speed when required and impressive fuel consumption. Despite being a ‘dirty’ diesel it is now one of the cleanest units available with major reductions in nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions. With its smartly evolved design there is no mistaking this is a Golf, it retains that certain something special on the style front which appeals to so many drivers. At its price point the new Golf needed to deliver… it does!

High scorers HIGH SCORERS: Montgo Golf Society. LAST Friday, September 11, saw another hot and sunny day with 17 Montgo Golf Society members playing in the competition sponsored by Sally and Keith Cottrell. Unfortunately, Sally was injured after a mountain expedition, but was able to present prizes to the winners. The society also welcomed Sylvia Mortensen as a guest. Scores were high, possibly due to the fact that some tees were well forward as work was being done on the course
to lay paths for buggies. Having said that, the high scores were well deserved. Tom Atkinson took first place with 42 points followed by Ros Fletcher and Gordon Gleeson with 41 points, and Alan Lowans with 40 points. Nearest the pins went to George Braddick, Richard Delaney and Nigel Siddall. Ilona Mathieu had two, two’s. Ros and Nigel also had a two each. Next week’s competition is a stableford sponsored by John Ross.
