MIJAS PROTESTS

ALTHOUGH at the beginning of lockdown in March, the Junta de Andalucia outlined some plans for the takeover of hotels to act as recovery centres for those suffering from Covid-19, few details were ever released. Now to the consternation of residents and the Mijas Council, it appears that the Junta has unilaterally decided to turn the Ilunion Hotel on the Mijas to Fuengirola road into such a centre without even discussing the matter with the Council. Residents in the area were immediately on the phone to the Council asking for advice and explanations of what was happening as over the weekend, they could see the hotel being transformed before their eyes in what almost appeared

been an important help to those families who struggle to find funds to purchase books and other equipment when the schools return for the new scholastic year.

It is of course particularly important this year considering the number of people who have lost their jobs and are simply struggling to get by on a day to day basis, so the generous nature of Carrefour customers will help to lighten their burden slightly. Apart from the items donated by customers, the supermarket is also gifting the sum of €121,000 to the Red Cross to allow them to help people in need on their list of clients.

Playa Padre chiringuito fire MARBELLA’S Playa Padre beach bar was in flames on the afternoon of Tuesday, September 8, Spanish press reported. This makes it the second year in a row that the chiringuito has suffered a fire. The blaze reportedly caused considerable damage, although

it is not on the scale of the destruction from the fire which broke out at the establishment at the beginning of 2019. On that occasion it was pretty much destroyed. The reports say that four teams of firefighters worked to bring the fire under control after beach bar

employees tried to douse the flames with fire extinguishers. By around 8pm the situation was more or less stable, with firefighters remaining at the scene to make sure the blaze was fully out. There was no information on what might have started the fire.

FREE TO PUBLIC: New section of historic path to open in October. OCTOBER sees the Diputación plan to open a new section of the Gran Senda de Málaga, already known as the Caminito del Rey, the mountainous path between Canillas de Aceituno and Sedella, located in the natural park of Sierras Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama. Environment, Interior Tourism and Climate Change Deputy, Cristóbal Ortega, confirmed the plan is to have this section open to the public, free of charge, by the beginning of October as this is the high season of hiking routes beginning. The

works, as he explained, are practically completed and he stressed that with its start-up this area will become ‘a new attraction’ for tourism in the region. One of the most complicated works has been the placement, in Canillas de Aceituno, of a suspension bridge 46 metres long and suspended 50 metres above the riverbed in an area near the La Rahije. This new path is part of stage number 7 of the Great Path which connects Cómpeta and Canillas de Aceituno with a 25-kilometre route where there has been an investment of almost €600,000.

Now the Marbella Council has said that they are actually buried at a beach in Calahonda and that

Ice, Ice, Baby THE mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz, h a s re v e a l e d w h i l s t opening a new ice factory that the Junta de Andalucia has spent more than €1 million to help improve the facilities of the Port of La Bajadilla. Accompanied by the managing director of the Public Agency of Ports of Andalucia (APPA), Rafael Merino, they visited the new ice factory which cost €600,000 to create and confirmed that a further €2 million has been allocated for the reorgan-

isation of the parking area and rooms for the fishermen during the next year. Mayor Muñoz explained that although the installation for the ice factory has been completed, the only thing missing is the supply of electricity which when added will satisfy a major demand from the local fishing fleets. In addition, agreement has been reached for the old factory to be demolished at a cost of €200,000, which will then allow for new facilities to be created.

AGE CARE ENTERTAINERS on the Costa del Sol have been badly hit by the coronavirus pandemic as gigs have been cancelled all along the coast. One talented and popular entertainer Alexandra Avery though is not one to rest on her laurels. Two weeks ago, she gathered together a group of her loyal supporters and decided to put on a show for charity. Age Care Association Mijas were chosen because they had helped to look after her mother and are doing a wonderful voluntary job in the area helping elderly people in all sorts of ways. Last Thursday, after two weeks of rehearsals, her group put on a Pearly King and Queen show at La Sierra restaurant at Cerrado del Aguila Golf. Thanks to Alexandra and her 18 entertainers who are aged from 16 to 86 a total of €1,030 was presented to the Vice President of Age Care, Tom Tarr.

Baby’s Agony THE National Police have confirmed an alleged case of child abuse in Malaga after the hospitalisation of a baby who was under two months old with injuries compatible with the shaken baby syndrome. The minor was admitted on Monday, August 24 with severe injuries, specifically rib and tibia fractures, bleeding in one eye, and brain haematoma. Given the seriousness of the injuries and the suspicion that they were the cause of a possible case of abuse, the hospital reported to the Court. Investigations in the minor’s family environment by the officers of the Group of Minors (Grume) confirmed that the baby lived with his father and mother,

in a home near the capital. During the proceedings, the baby’s father alleged the reason for the admission was that he had been playing at home with the child, who was on his knees, simulating the trot of a horse, when he began to convulse. According to the doctors, the severity of the horrifying injuries that the baby suffered, would not be compatible with a mere game. The investigations carried out led to the arrest of the father for his responsibility in the crimes of serious injuries and mistreatment. The judicial authority has issued a restraining order to keep the father away from the son, who is still admitted in hospital.

COMMUNITY response to Project Costa’s ambitious b i d t o c re a t e a h a l f w a y house and soup kitchen for the homeless in the region has been incredible. Within days of an appeal for support in Euro Weekly News, floods of donations have been received, including the amazing gift of a fully equipped industrial kitchen from local business, Yorkshire Linen. “It has been fantastic, we have been so busy collecting donations over the last few days,” said project founder, Arne Soeten. “On Sunday (September 6) we were given some kitchen gear and then of course we have been given a whole kitchen which we will be fitting at our halfway house in Benitachell, huge thanks to Yorkshire Linen.” This is in addition to the clean clothes for men, women and children as well as new underwear and donations, collected the previous weekend when volunteers from the non-religious and non-profit organisation parked up their yellow Project Costa ‘Tweety’ van at Javea Port. The objective of Project Costa is to dress and feed the less fortu-

nate on the Costa Blanca, as well as offering a rehabilitation programme for up to three people at a time in the half way home currently being refurbished. The team - Arne, Matty, Steven, Inge and Caroline - want to get alcoholics and drug addicts off the streets and back into

society, with some of them having first-hand experience of being homeless. “We want to start by feeding the homeless, giving out clothes and sleeping bags. As we get to know them, we will be able to see who wants a second chance at life and we will help

them get back into society.” Assisting the team is Stephan, a homeless man who has become a familiar face in Albir, along with his white dog carried about in his adapted bicycle. “We have made contact with Stephan who will show us around Albir and Altea and help us meet with people living on the streets. “We are taking it one day at a time to reach our goal, but things are moving very fast. It’s really encouraging,” said Arne. Meanwhile, volunteer Steven Barnes, a chef and former restaurant owner from Yorkshire, is busy making plans for the mountain of meals he will be preparing from Project Costa’s new kitchen. And he has a wealth of experience of both feeding the homeless and living on the streets, having cooked 200 meals three times a week for the less fortunate in Rome. Steve is proof of how easy it is to end up homeless after his own

business fell victim to the credit crunch and went into liquidation while living in Rome. It was then he set himself the challenge of getting homeless people off the streets and started volunteer group, Project Rome. “There are thousands of people living on the streets in Rome, it is a bit different here to the Costa Blanca, but the concept is the same. “Once we are up and running, I really want the public to be involved. I’d like people to come and taste the nutritional food I will be preparing and give their feedback.” As well as kitchen equipment, clothes, food and sleeping bags are still needed to ensure Project Costa can reach as many people as possible. Jet2 Cancellations JET2 cancels all flights to mainland Spain for the rest of the summer and also advised it would not be flying to parts of

Croatia either. Travellers hoping to fly off for last-minute trips to spain were left devastated after travel giant Jet2 cancelled all flights to the

mainland. They revealed the news after government guidance on quarantine rules for travellers from the country remained the same. Spain was removed from the UK government’s ‘safe lists’ on July 25. All flights from the company to Croatia before November will now be automatically cancelled by

Jet2holidays, full refunds will be issued to customers. In a communication to agents, the operator said: “Jet2holidays have taken the decision to extend the suspension of our flights and holidays programme to Croatia due to the continued Covid-19 pandemic.” In a separate communication to agents, Jet2 con-

firmed its holidays to mainland Spain, including Malaga, Alicante and Barcelona, were also cancelled until the same dates. Jet2 urged the UK government to implement “a targeted approach to travel advice, instead of the current blanket ban approach.” In a statement shared on Twitter, the company

said: “Where customers are affected by any programme changes, we have been repeatedly recognised for how we have been looking after them, offering the option to rebook with no admin fee, a refund credit note, or a full cash refund, and we are contacting customers to discuss these options.

NOW BANNED: Elephants roaming the motorway after a crash in Murcia. WITH the recent approval by the Castile-La Mancha Parliament of the new Animal Protection Law, which includes a ban on circus shows with wild animals in Castile-La Mancha, 12 Autonomous Communities have now banned these shows. Over the last four years pressure group InfoCircos has been in regular contact with the Parliamentary Groups of the Cortes in order to achieve the prohibition of circuses with wild animals in Castilla-La Mancha. With Castilla-La Mancha joining the ban, 78 per cent of the Spanish popu-

lation now lives in territory free of circuses with wild animals, either in the 12 Autonomous Communities where these shows have been banned, or in the municipalities that have declared themselves free of circuses with wild animals. According to Marta Merchán of InfoCircos, “The ban on the use of wild animals in circus shows is something about which there is a broad consensus, not only at a social level but, as is being seen in the majority of Communities and municipalities, from all political parties.”

NEW kid on the block, Juanito Cortes a-10-year-old-boy from the Catalan town of Sant Roc de Badalona in north-eastern Spain, has made an incredible breakthrough in the world of contemporary art, selling his works of ‘love and peace’ in galleries for astounding prices of up to €20,000 for a painting. Juanito Cortes and his father are preparing to take a tour around the world to exhibit Juanito’s works at art fairs and in galleries in New York, Paris, Rome, Dubai and Barcelona. What really excites him the most about selling his paintings is that they are seen and appreciated by as many people as possible. Juanito said: “The first time my father told me that he had sold one of my paintings, I was so happy because it meant that the painting was hanging inside a person’s house. That caused me great happiness. I want all of my works to hang in museums, galleries and houses so that everyone can appreciate them. I want to be the most famous painter in the world.” In the coming months, the world’s art lovers will have the chance to get an up-close look at Juanito’s art when he goes on his first large trip outside of Spain. He said, excitedly: “I really want to travel and to leave Spain, to see other places in the world.”

Good use THE Business Federation of Spanish Pharmacists (FEFE), feel underused during this ongoing health crisis and so have offered their services in such important actions as collecting samples to perform PCR or serological tests and vaccinating risk groups against influenza to make better use of their time and abilities. The group have been offering their services to the ministry and regional governments since the beginning of the health crisis through different channels, however, so far, they have fallen on deaf ears.

“It does not make any sense that they do not have us,” says Luis de Palacio, president of FEFE, “we are the health workers who are closest to the population, we are hundreds of metres from their houses and each is probably a regular visitor. If it is necessary for us to train, we will do it without a problem. By Damon Mitchell IN the current times of harsh reality EWN was lucky enough to delve into the vivid imagination of an expat writer and one half of the creative team behind the fantasy fiction or ‘Arctic Gothic Horror’ novel ‘The Reeking Hegs,’ who goes by the nom de plume Pete Peru. Pete has been a resident in Spain since 1989 and is currently living in Sant Cugat, near Barcelona. The primary schoolchildren that he teaches at the Europa International School of Barcelona might be shocked to discover the

Magical mind fantastic journeys he has taken in his life which look to serve as inspiration for his first published book. Pete’s writing of ‘The Reeking Hegs’ began when he returned from a trip around South America, hence the ‘Peru’ in his pseudonym. The name was given to him by his co-writer Lord Tupelo, or Bob, when they began an inventive way to put together their collective thoughts. “We used to bounce

ideas off each other, I would write some of it then pass it on to him. Bob could choose to follow the direction I was going or take the story in a completely different direction. A lot of was written under the influence of Bob’s home brew!” He added, “The bulk of the book was written from about 1987 to 1992 when it was completed. At that point we tried to have it published, but with no success.”

The two finally saw their imaginative piece of work come together and it has now been released

This has left many people without work causing even more stress on the government’s treasury and people’s well-being and way of life. The perspective most people fail to see is that isolation is only sustainable for certain sectors, who can financially sustain themselves. It seems as if politicians are happy to ensure that people do not get Covid, even if the decisions fail to secure a future free from emotional problems or hunger due to the collapse of the economy.

TRAINING sessions have commenced for Benalmadena men’s hockey team in preparation for the 2020/2021 season at the El Retmar sports field in what could be a difficult campaign following the suspension of competitions due to the lockdown. Now the players are getting ready for their first competitive game against Sardinero in Benalmadena on September 27 and although the team has in the past been very successful, it has lost a number of players. Creating more jobs AS part of its ongoing programme to increase work

for local residents, the Benalmadena Council has an-

nounced that it intends to employ 125 people in October with priority being given to recruiting those most in danger of social exclusion. Offering three-month contracts, the council is hoping to hire 45 to be engaged in cleaning work, three drivers, 34 painters, 18 bricklayers and 25 administrative assistants announced councillor for Employment, Joaquín Villazón in the company of town mayor, Victor Navas. It is hoped that this offer of work will help to encourage those who are currently unemployed and help them to move on to new positions in 2021 and their efforts will be to the benefit of the residents of the municipality. As funds become available the council also expects to strengthen its team in the municipal works department.

IT looks like the days are numbered for the 902 premium rate customer information and service lines. The Consumer Ministry is looking at banning numbers with the prefix, which are used by numerous telephone services. “We are starting the process for the prohibition of 902, which is going to prohibit the use of these customer service numbers

because they increase working families’ bills when they are exercising their right to complain,� Consumer Minister Alberto Garzon said in an interview with Canal Sur radio on Friday September 4. The aim is to put an end to what the minister said was a widespread abuse by companies, which has been made worse by lockdown and the Covid-19 pandemic as people have been unable

to make enquiries or sort out problems face-to-face and have had to resort to the 902 numbers. The Consumer Ministry is now preparing a modification to the General Law for the Defence of Consumers and Users to prevent companies from applying prices which exceed the usual tariffs for a landline or standard mobile phone call for their customer service lines, according to Spanish press.

Must they leave for 90 days? I have read with dismay your EWN article re­ garding the 90­180 day ruling for tourist stays in Spain. We are UK residents and own a property in Spain. We usually spend some time between January and June in Spain. With the new ruling we will obvious­ ly not be able to exceed 90 days during that period. In addition we usually return in early September for about six weeks. Your article states that we have to be out of Spain (I assume this also means all of the Schen­ gen area?) for 90 days before we can return, so our earliest return date would be in October. First, the tourist stay of 90 days in a 180­ YOU AND THE LAW day period is not a IN SPAIN ‘new ruling.’ It is an EU regulation which has been in effect for some years. The confusion arose because various countries, includ­ ing Spain, did not strictly enforce it. Yes, your assump­ tions are correct. You must remain outside Spain for 90 days. And you must not stay in any European Union country except your country of residence.

Costa Coffee cuts

POPULAR BRAND: Trade is returning, but takings are definitely down. COSTA COFFEE owned by the Coca-Cola group is probably the most popular of the coffee café brands in the UK, but it is suffering and is considering shedding around 1,650 jobs from its 2,700 stores of which 1,100 are franchises. The company closed almost all of its outlets for six weeks during the lockdown and so far 300 remain closed, but with the downturn in footfall caused by fewer shoppers and office workers, takings are definitely down. Throughout the pandemic, Costa has taken action to pro­ vide, where possible, financial support and to look after em­ ployees and while stores were closed, all team members were put on the furlough scheme provided by the gov­ ernment, with their salary topped up by Costa to 100 per cent for 12 weeks.

It agrees that trade is re­ turning, helped by the gov­ ernment’s VAT reduction, which Costa passed on to customers in full, and the re­ cent ‘Eat Out To Help Out’ Scheme, but there remain high levels of uncertainty as to when trade will recover to pre­Covid levels. Costa claims that it has made significant investments in safely accelerating the re­ opening of stores, ensuring they are safe for customers and team members and made the difficult decision to freeze all pay increases within the Support Centre and cut all non­essential expenditure. Managing Director Neil Lake said following the announce­ ment, “Today’s announce­ ment to our store teams was an extremely difficult decision to make. Our baristas are the heart of the Costa business and I am truly sorry that many now face uncertainty follow­ ing today’s news.”

Xanadú for sale AS previously reported, British developer Intu Properties has been placed into Administration (a form of bankruptcy) and as expected, liquidator KPMG has instructed a Spanish agency to try to find a buyer for its 50 per stake in Madrid shopping centre Xanadú. It was as recently as 2017 that Intu purchased the centre for €530 million and then quickly sold half to Nuveen Real Estate Fund and last year it managed to sell its Zaragoza shopping centre and pulled out of a planned development in Torremolinos.

It’s really not their fault

WE really shouldn’t be blaming the immigrants for pouring across the channel in their droves. It’s really not their fault. If you were sitting in a muddy foreign field, rain dripping on your head through the holes in your tatty tarpaulin ceiling and someone showed you a photo of the luxury hotel room you could be occupying by crossing a mere 20 odd miles of fairly safe water, wouldn’t you give it a go? I know I would. The irony is that the photos and reports they receive are all true. Many of those who have ‘made it,’ actually are sitting in comfortable, free hotel rooms with telly and ensuite bathrooms. Recently I watched Alan Boulton interviewing an ex border control chief. ‘What actually happens to the majority of these people when they are picked up’ he asked? ‘Well,’ the ex-chief explained. ‘Ultimately they are all taken somewhere to be processed; we take their particulars and fingerprints and then let them go’! Apparently, in an act of naivety that almost defies the imagination, they are subsequently instructed to ‘report back in a couple of weeks’! ‘And what percentage com-

It simply cannot appear to offer desperate people a kind of utopian Shangri-La, with free legal aid to explore a multitude of loopholes in a system that already resembles a terminally perforated colander. For heaven’s sake someone get a grip. The UK is rapidly losing control and when it hits the fan, don’t look to the likes of Gary Lineker to solve the problem - it just ain’t going to happen. Delighted to see the awful Kay Burley’s new show being slated by the critics. This bitchy egotistical woman, who laughingly sees herself as a ‘probing’ reporter, is nothing more than a nasty bitter individual who, if she wasn’t a major shareholder, would have been put out to graze by SKY news years ago. Constructive noises issuing from the mouth of Tim Davies the new Director General of the BBC. Let’s just see if he puts his money anywhere in its vicinity. FOR eight years, the Playwright restaurant has been at the top of the tree in Elviria and surrounding areas serving great food and welcoming so many local residents. Owners Penny and Marc Quinlan had to close during the lockdown but unlike many other restaurateurs, they saw this as an opportunity rather than a disaster and now six months later, they are about to reopen. It was a very brave decision to completely renovate the restaurant and bar but there is no doubt that Marc’s vision has been rewarded as the new interior is a revelation with its emphasis on a mix of modern concepts harking back to the art deco period. Everything is new from the furniture to the staff to the designer crockery to the individual pieces of decoration throughout the property. When you walk into the new interior of the Playwright, you will be impressed with the amount of live greenery, the wisteria ceiling and the cherry blossom trees all picked out by incredibly attractive art deco lighting plus a number of unique decorative pieces. Many may question the wisdom of opening as autumn is just round the corner, but the Playwright has always been busiest as the nights draw in and the heat of the day dissipates, so this is the ideal time to welcome back longstanding customers

Hola Otoño GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY AS I walked to a meeting, early on Tuesday morning, I suddenly felt the cool air of autumn. I stopped in the centre of Marbella, and watched as the sun came up, offering golden hues through the trees of Parque de la Alameda. The cool air, the golden light, the smell of the bakery, and the sound of the city, coming to life slowly. Sometimes the most simple things, stop us in our tracks and remind us, that the world keeps going. Emerging from my meeting, a very successful one, I may add, the temperature had climbed fast to 28ºC and it felt much like summer once again. September has arrived out of nowhere, and of course we have been expecting it, but somehow, autumn 2020 arrived without the usual back to school television commercials, or advertising campaigns featuring falling leaves and Halloween references. It just arrived, and for me it’s most welcome. The changing of the seasons is something I look forward to, and since moving to Marbella, autumn has become the best. After long, hot and lazy, if not sometimes crazy, days of August, autumn brings with it an opportunity to move indoors and light the fires. The climate here in autumn is pretty much ideal - temperatures still warm enough to hit the beach, but cool enough to pull out the cashmere in the evenings. Lunching at The Marbella Club on Thursday, I sat, staring out to sea, beaches now empty and the pace of life, feeling even a little slower than before. Yes, we only had a very short summer season, and there were masks and social distancing to contend with, but we still had the opportunity to grab a little bit of new normal on the beaches. My home is right on the beach, so, after months of lockdown, to see people splashing in the sea, or the sound of children laughing, was great. However, now summer has passed, it feels as if the beach is almost private once again. It’s good for the mind. And while keeping our mental health in check has never

IT’S GOOD: Drinking watermelon juice. been more important, so too is the need to look after our day-to-day general health. With the virus still very much in the news, and cases on the rise, we keep washing our hands and protecting ourselves from germs entering our bodies. However, it’s also time to up our game and our vitamin intake. Protecting from the inside. I’ve started eating more and more fruit and vegetables. I eat a lot anyhow, roughly 20 tomatoes per week (usually in the form of Insalata Caprese, if I’m honest), not to mention my new addiction to juicing. I go through phases of juicing, and right now, if I can juice it, I do it. Even carrot juice, with a little Grey Goose, has become my go-to five o’clock martini. After just five days of lower alcohol intake, longer running distances and heaps of foods packed with vitamins, I feel stronger and more alive. Ready for anything, in fact. So bring it on!

SPANISH WORDS IN ENGLISH JOHN

LAST week I wrote about the importance of learning the Spanish language when you live here, but did you know that quite a number of words in the English language actually come from Spanish. Joseph Williams was an expert on the origins of the English language. He studied it for years and wrote books on the subject. He found that our native tongue is a bit of a mongrel language. He surmised that about 40 per cent of our words comes from French and that only about a third is actually native to Britain and that 15 per cent comes from Latin. All other languages combined contribute just 5 per cent of our words. One of those ‘other’ languages is Spanish. Whilst the impact of Spanish

LEARNING SPANISH: Maybe it wouldn’t be that hard to learn after all. on English is lower than French and Latin, there’s certainly enough of it in our language to have had quite an effect on it. From a canyon to a caldera and a tornado to a tango, let’s take a mini tour through the influence of Spanish on English. Here goes! Some of the Spanish words in

our language are quite obvious like patio, pronto, cafeteria, fiesta and siesta, but many words have derived from Spanish over the years and are not quite so obvious at first. The words vanilla and oregano are direct steals from it. The Spanish verb saber means ‘to know.’ This is where we get the slang word savvy

from. The word cargo comes from the verb cargar which means to load. Without the Spanish language there would be no such thing as a ‘macho’ man. Then there are words that are obviously Spanish like paella, bodega and matador as well as plaza, which is a public square.

In the animal kingdom a number of animals have Spanish names that have crossed over into English. The puma, for example and the ar madillo are direct steals along with mosquito, coyote and iguana. The barracuda and mustang are also from Spanish. Breeze comes from the word brisa, which means a light wind and chaps, that cowboys wear on the legs comes from the Mexican Spanish word chaparreras. The word lazo in Spanish is knot and has developed into the lasso that cowboys use to catch a horse. They would probably use that lasso on a ranch which comes from the word rancho. There are a number of words that are quite obviously Spanish that we might use like, nacho, sombrero, samba, tequila and tortilla. On top of all that, most words that end in ‘tion’ in English end in ‘cion’ in Spanish. So! Maybe Spanish wouldn’t be that hard to learn after all!

Choosing our family LIAM ANTHONY An Open Book I S TA R T E D w a t c h i n g R u Paul’s Drag Race in 2015. Having missed six seasons, I had a lot of catching up to do. My partner introduced me to the programme. I’d like to think that it somehow punctuates the start of our relationship. Season 7 will always remind me of our honeymoon period. A show that spans 12 seasons, five editions of its All Stars spin-off and a Christmas special, it boasts an unprecedented portfolio of iconic drag queens. The show has even spearheaded editions of Drag Race in the United Kingdom, Thailand and most recently, Canada. It has become a tour de force not just for the LGBTQ community,

but for mainstream audiences too. Not only has it transformed the landscape of popular cul-

ture, but it also continues to provide relentless entertainment and showcases some of the

most authentic examples of talent and creativity. In my opinion, it remains unsurpassed in the world of reality television. There have been hundreds of contestants, a total of 19 series winners and queens who were given the proud title of Miss Congeniality of their season. Due to the show’s impact, the stars of the show, the drag queens, ultimately become part of your life. I see them as a hybrid of a comic book superhero and a best friend. We are addicted to their charm, wit and creativity. We are rendered to tears when we hear of their past stories. We understand their insecurities and we grow to love them. With the recent death of Chi Chi Devayne (Season 8/All Stars 3), the influence of the show has proven to be undeniable. The tributes to the late Devayne on social media by her Drag Race sisters has emphasised the importance of what the show represents, solidarity and community. Having read myriad stories

about Devayne and her humble background, she was allegedly in a dream-like state whilst recording the show. Chi Chi’s entrance raised a few eyebrows from her competitors because she entered the iconic workroom wearing a dress made out of black bin bags. Fellow drag queen, Thorgy Thor, referred to her look as ‘resourceful.’ Nevertheless, she captured everyone’s attention with her outstanding choreography and her ability to lipsync upside down. The demise of a drag queen from a show as colossal as Ru Paul’s Drag Race reminds us of how important a community is for the LGBTQ people. It gives its audience a sea of characters who become our family. So many of these queens are the muses for young LGBTQ teenagers around the world. Losing one feels like losing a member of your family. As we know in the LGBTQ community, we often have to choose our family.

Yet another ridiculous decision MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man NEVER watched Last Night of the Proms all the way through - not my thing really but when I heard the BBC were going to ban Land of Hope and Glory and Rule Britannia I was angry. Yet another ridiculous decision made by - well I don’t actually know by whom. I’m sure it references slavery plus other things that have scared someone. I don’t even know what the words of the songs are but whenever I have seen glimpses of people singing it they don’t appear to be white supremists or at a National Front meeting. Just a bunch of people having a jolly good night out. Anyway we can stand down now as the Beeb has changed its mind. As an aside when the ban was announced Land of Hope and Glory topped the charts. Joke isn’t it? I really want to write about Trump but to be honest I just don’t have enough space here to list all the lies and hate he pedals so I won’t - unless I’m given more space one week.

I have grey hair, what’s left of it. I now have a fivehead. My forehead went long ago and when I do have it cut I decline the offer to be shown the back of it in the mirror. I’m happy to remember it as it was - thick, lush and curly, not the shiny space that is now there. As it’s grey my daughter bought me some special shampoo for a nice silvery look. This is achieved because the shampoo is purple. I read the instructions the best I could and washed me barnet. I now look like my old aunty Doris who used to have a purple rinse. You all know the look I’m talking about. I might have to re-read the instructions. OK just getting ready to pop out for a quick trip to shops. Checklist - house keys, phone, car keys, sighted sunglasses that my driving licence says I have to wear even though I don’t wear glasses for anything else. Mask, hand sanitiser, exception note from doctor in case I get stopped by the police for getting out of my car and walking to shop without mask on. And, of course, a hat to cover my purple hair!! HEARTBREAKING DEAR Euro Weekly News, It was so upsetting to hear of the two hugely destructive fires in the Costa del Sol, Sisu and Laguna Village. It is the last thing these business owners need at such a bad time for the tourist industry on the coast. The pictures of the charred building remains were heartbreaking. I really hope the community will come together and create some kind of benefit for them, if not to help them with their losses then just to show that they have some support. I don’t know if that kind of thing happens in Spain but in Portland, where I am originally from, that is the kind of thing that we would do. AIR bridges, red lists and the Great British quarantine debate. What on earth is going on? Country in, country out, country back in again. No wonder holidaymakers are tearing their hair out with confusion. After UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock’s comments on British TV last week, travellers already in Portugal started panic buying flights to get them back as soon as possible, his vague replies, when questioned about an imminent quarantine decision, left them second-guessing Parliaments decisions. Then, what happens, they leave it alone, well kind of. They left it for travellers to England and Northern Ireland, but Scotland and Wales decided to make their own decision and lower the drawbridge on the air bridge, they put a quarantine in place for those coming from Portugal. Now holidaymakers or those who wish to return to second homes or families are living in an added fear or confusion if they too will be put under this strain and uncertainty. The Scots were already hoping for the quarantine to be lifted between them and holiday favourite, Spain, but in adding Portugal to a red list the chances of that happening are slim to none. Sure, people understand that as Covid figures rise in each or any country there is a fear of transmission between countries. Should people be able to make up their own minds about travelling? Especially if it puts their livelihood or even mental state at risk. The news of a testing facility at Heathrow sitting unused was a revelation, who knew? If that was a way of allowing you in without quarantine you can be sure that everybody would be heading there, wouldn’t they?

Welcome back Dear Euro Weekly News, I read in your paper that The Food Fairies are about to make a welcome return to the Costa del Sol. Must I say I have missed reading about the great help they gave families during the first parts of the virus and the initial shock of isolation. I totally understand why they have made a comeback, families are still in need. My wife and I often take care packages to our local food bank when able and it is upsetting to see young children waiting for their next meal. After the impact the virus has had on employment I am sure there must be even more families going without than before, such a shame, I am happy they will get some help from these magnificent girls. You are bang on and that was probably why the original method of marking was fairer but did not produce the marks that a small proportion thought they should get! However, you were diplomatic not to mention that a proportion of those going to Uni are only doing so to put off the evil day when they will have to work for a living and to have a good time. Again, you were spot on with your remarks about Boris and I would wager that the irate farmer was not a Conservative! MORNING SUNSHINE: How you start your day can make a difference. THE morning can either be the best time of the day or the worst, depending on what kind of person you are. Whichever camp you fall into, how you start your morning can have a big impact on how the rest of the day goes. Making small changes to your morning routine could quickly make all the difference. Although it’s incredibly tempting to reach for the tea or coffee first thing, try drinking a cup of hot water and lemon first which will help to start your digestion, get your liver up and running as well as rehydrating you. If you have a busy household, try setting your alarm 30 minutes before everyone else wakes up. This will give you time to take a nice long shower, read the paper or do some exercise; whatever you find most relaxing. You might find this becomes your most productive time of the day, and could help you make plans for the week ahead or pursue some creative activities. You could also use this time to meditate for five or 10 minutes, helping to clear your mind and get you focused for the day.

1. Develop new tools to help you manage stress. Stress is a common trigger for almost any mental health disorder. Avoid old habits and patterns You will need to make a conscious effort to stay away from some of the issues, situations, or triggers that put you at risk. Avoid the temptation to avoid change. Get help Seek help immediately for any serious mental health issues that suddenly crop up. If you can address these unresolved issues and work through them, your risk of relapse will be much lower. 4. Watch Out for Substance Abuse It’s common for young people that struggle with mental health disorders to self-medicate. Even though alcohol is a depressant, it’s often used to numb the side effects or symptoms of depression. 5. Stick to Your Treatment Plan After you’ve completed a treatment programme, it’s crucial that you follow the plan you developed with your therapists and doctors.

If you are supposed to attend regular therapy sessions, don’t skip appointments. If medications are involved in your treatment routine, follow the orders for the prescription. 6. Have a Backup Plan If you experience a setback, make sure you have a plan in place. Mistakes happen. Knowing what you might do ahead of time can be very effective when you feel you are being tested by tough times. The worst thing you can do is give up. 7. Find healthy new ways to have fun The old behaviour patterns may have taken a lot of time and energy. Replace them with activities that add joy to your life. Consider trying a new hobby or sport. Having a new interest can make you a lot less vulnerable to relapse. 8. Educate yourself Read books or network with others that are actively engaged in strengthening their recovery. Find out what worked for other people. The more you learn, the more coping skills you’ll have for sustaining your recovery. 9. Build a strong support system The more people someone has in their life that want to lift them up, the odds of them falling down decrease. Deepen your ties to the ones you trust. Special friends, family members, classmates, co-workers, or therapists can be great resources when you need them the most. 10. Remember your goals Don’t lose sight of the big picture. Continue to strive for your vision of the way you want your life to be. Along the way, set smaller attainable goals, too. This can help keep you focused and on track. 11. Know that this too will pass If you experience a relapse, try to learn from it. It’s important to remember that relapse episodes are often a normal and natural part of recovery. It could have been with regards to a new job, a promotion or the thought of having a child. You may not have been aware, but the moment you felt that genuine passion and excitement, you were

visualising the event and by visualising, you were manifesting the thought and feeling into an experience. The fact that 3 per cent of the population earn approximately 97 per cent of all income, isn’t down to luck. It is down to the fact that they believe and live by the Law Of Attraction. Many people live their lives, the way society tells them to. We become a creature of habit, comparing ourselves to people around us. By doing this, we live our lives with limited beliefs, therefore, creating a limited lifestyle. One way to create a limitless life is affirmations. Affirmations are a short statement, that you repeat all day, every day, but with feeling.

For example; If you have a bad ‘feeling’ towards money, then the law is to create a further lack of money. However, by using an affirmation such as, ‘money comes to me easily and frequently,’ this can change. It is important to note that but just repeating the words, nothing will change. You have to FEEL and BELIEVE in what you are saying. This particular affirmation is one I put to the test. I even went a step further and created a cheque for a specific amount. I held that cheque in my hand, every night before I went to bed and visualised receiving it. I created the feeling, the thought and the visualisation. Within a week, I

Steven Saunders FMCGB The Little Geranium La Cala de Mijas www.thelittlegeranium.com BEFORE the Covid virus I was able to write about being at different events here in Spain and abroad. I wrote enthusiastically about great restaurants and great ingredients from different cities, beach barbecue parties with live music and events at our restaurant with famous people attending. But now that has all been taken away from us. I don’t know whether you have noticed, but people over here are not very happy these days. The supermarket staff act as though they are the Guardia Civil, clients are spoken to in a militant manner, they generally don’t care about their clients. The holidaymakers are irritated because of all the rules and of course they are concerned about the quarantine when they get home.

Many of us have had our businesses destroyed without any explanation or compensation. Over here we are all having to wear masks 24/7 and keep two metres away from each other even when figures show more deaths from regular flu in 2019 than Covid. I walk down the street wearing a mask and then when I get to a restaurant or gym with loads of people in it, I can then take the mask off! Does that make any sense? If the governments really had our interests at heart, they would ban intensive farming which includes using a cocktail of chemicals on plant life, many that are dangerous to our health and have been connected to cancers. They don’t because they don’t care about our health. There is no doubt that we are all being fooled by this pandemic for reasons that we may never know, but it doesn’t mean that everybody should be rude to each other, we need to start smiling more and we will soon see that the mes-

The other day a client complained about the price of our five-course tasting menu at €42 per person which includes IVA. I spend more than that on an Indian takeaway, maybe they don’t eat out anywhere else, maybe they have never been anywhere else? Maybe they have never been to a supermarket? It’s more expensive to buy five courses if you include all the bits like the truffles and herbs etc. You should try it, gather up enough food for five courses and include a

It is a real problem for all of us in hospitality, trying to keep prices down, but with a low footfall of clients and many government restrictions, it’s rapidly becoming a headache being in this industry. Some people don’t realise how hard we have to work. My day starts early with shopping and bread making and then preparation for at least eight hours a day before the clients arrive, my work day is generally 16 hours. I don’t just

open the fridge and there it all is… I wish! Whilst I believe that some countries are doing all they can to help build business back as fast as possible with grants and reduced taxes, dinner voucher schemes etc, over here they are doing all they can to get as many tax bills out as fast as possible. For sure this could see the closure of all businesses in the next few weeks. Take a look at the boulevard in La Cala or any street in Marbella and Fuengirola. So many lovely places are closed down, it is shocking and so unnecessary.

So here I am in a little town in southern Spain cooking fantastic food that has just been awarded The Best International Restaurant in the whole of Spain and I am delighted, but at the same time I am disappointed and confused about where any of our futures lie and so the awards don’t seem to be so important any more. My mother always used to say a little home-made soup will make you smile! So here it is, a simple recipe for my roasted cauliflower velouté which I make using several cooking processes like dehydrating, but this consumes time and you need equipment. So, I have made it simpler for you but it is still outstanding, clients love it and many are waiting for this recipe. Now that the weather is a little cooler it is perfect served with some warm crusty bread. If you make it and eat it at home, you don’t have to wear a mask and you can play music, smoke, dance a little and be happy and you won’t get arrested. That’s a bonus!

Chef Steven’s award-winning Roasted Cauliflower & Truffle Velouté Ingredients for six or more

1 large head cauliflower, cut into florets 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil Maldon salt 1 medium onion, chopped 3 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped 1 carrot peeled and chopped 1 leek washed and chopped 2 potatoes peeled and diced 2 litres of vegetable stock 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 small jar of truffle pieces (available from some supermarkets) For garnish: Roasted cauliflower florets, Truffle oil, Basil oil Method Preheat the oven to 200ºC On the baking sheet, toss half the cauli-

flower with two tablespoons of the olive oil until lightly and evenly coated in oil. Arrange the cauliflower in a single layer and sprinkle lightly with salt. Bake until the cauliflower is caramelized on the edges, 25 minutes approx tossing halfway. Once the cauliflower is almost done, in a large pan warm the remaining one tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat until shimmering. Add the remaining cauliflower, onion and other vegetables and the salt. Cook, stirring occasionally for five minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring constantly, until fragrant, about 30 seconds, then add the stock. Reserve six of the prettiest roasted cauliflower florets for garnish. Then transfer the remaining cauliflower to the pot. Increase the

heat to medium-high and bring the mixture to a fast simmer, then reduce the heat to maintain a gentle simmer. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 30 minutes, to give the flavours time to come together Remove the soup pot from the heat and let it cool for a few minutes. Then, carefully transfer the hot soup to a blender, working in batches if necessary. Add the butter and blend until smooth. Finally add 200ml of cream to a clean saucepan on the heat and warm it. Then pour in the cauliflower puree, whisking. Now add the truffle pieces and whisk well in. Pour into small bowls. Top individual bowls of soup with one small roasted cauliflower floret and drizzle with green oil or chives and truffle oil. This

Businesses offering internships or open days to broaden students’ horizons would also be so good for the kids and the community.
