HAPPY smiling children followed colourful footprints and arrows back into their classrooms this week as the new school year began for many children across the Costa Blanca. New signs, safety measures and extra staff were on hand to welcome excited young children back to school after nearly six months. For many parents it was a welcomed relief that their children were able to get back to some sort of normality. As many learners saw their friends for the first time, one parent spoke to EWN about their experience on the first day back, “The school had separated the playground areas for each age group and each child went in individually after sanitising their hands

and shoes, it felt very well organised and it did make me feel much more confident about sending my kids back.” It has been a long summer for the children who were forced to endure a strict lockdown after schools were shut down months earlier than planned. During the height of the lockdown, Spain was criticised for their handling of the situation in regards to the children. Unlike other European countries where children were allowed out for exercise, children in Spain spent weeks indoors and some were left wondering whether this would have an impact on their social development as well as their educational needs. Thankfully, things are beginning to return to normal

into schools is a positive step in the right direction.

Parents were faced with some uncertainty before yesterday’s return with many schools unable to commit to their Covid19 safety plans, some leaving it as late as last week to announce their reopening plans. The smiles that greeted parents after the children enjoyed their first day would have put all previous concerns and worries to bed, as they tucked their children in at night.

COMPETING as part of the Spanish team, Natalia Hidalgo, Paula Sánchez and Gabriel Rojo all did well in this y e a r ’s Junior Triathlon European Cup in Lake Banvoles. The young women, competing in a tough race, both managed to break into the top 10 places. Hidalgo, from the City of Lugo Fluvial team, did exceptional by coming sixth in a race competed to a high standard, with Spanish teammate, Paula Sánchez taking ninth position. Hildalgo completed to course in one hour and 58 seconds, with ninth place Sánchez clocking a time of one hour, one minute and 35 seconds. Gabriel Rojo will be glad to have finished in the top 30 as the young men’s race proved to be very competitive.

CARE AND SUPPORT: Social networks in Cartagena to help residents.

DEPUTY MAYOR of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo, explained that the City Council will be working with health centres and social workers to create social networks to help offer better safety information regarding Covid-19, the ‘importance of quarantine’ and to help support the families with elderly relatives. These social networks will be made up of health workers, volunteers and associations within different areas of

the city. The need for these extra support networks has been prompted by the situation in the Barrio de Peral neighbourhood, with Arroyo explaining, “this is not just a health problem; It is a social problem and a problem that is growing and that we have to take very seriously. We have to break the chains of contagion, guarantee that the isolations of the sick and the contacts of the sick are strictly complied with.”

THE councillor of Culture in Los Montesinos has added two new theatrical performances that the children, and parents, of the municipality will enjoy. September 13 and 19 will see two classic children’s performances added to the schedule. Morán Paredes, has announced that on Sunday, September 13 at 7pm; The Lead Soldier and The Dancer will make its debut at the local auditorium.

On September 19, at 7pm, the auditorium will see children swinging from the rafters as the classic tale of Tarzan is also added to the bonus theatrical performances. The capacity is limited and pre-invitation tickets must be picked up in advance in order to attend. Children from six years old must wear a mask. All necessary Covid-19 safety measures will be followed.

FOR over 12 years the Rojales Pantomime Group have been thrilling audiences both old and young with a yearly pantomime, raising over €18,000 for various local charities, bringing happiness and laughter to all their audiences who loved to participate with booing and hissing at the baddies and cheering for the goodies. But alas, the evil King Corona Virus has put the kaibosh on their next production which was to be the very hilarious Treasure Island due to be performed in January 2021. After losing their rehearsal venues and the production theatre the Group had no alternative but to cancel the pantomime until, hopefully, a date in the future. Our intrepid thespians will not be beaten. oh no they won’t... so to ensure that the Group that plays together stays together, monthly social events are being arranged by our very busy Social Secretary, Dee

Rocking Way to Raise Money HEAD-BANGING, moshing and air guitar will be the order of the weekend next September, as Torrevieja will host another amazing festival for a wonderful cause. The Rock Against Cancer event in Eras De La Sal Torrevieja, which is scheduled for Friday 10 and Saturday 11, September 2021, will be dedicated to covering costs and raising funds for two local cancer charities; Alicante Fighting Against Cancer and AFECANCER (an association dedicated to patients suffering from cancer and their families). FEAR of the virus, masks covering mouths and socially distancing, has made it a tough year for those seeking companionship and connection. Thankfully, a church in the community of Campoverde has come up with a heart-warming way to fight off isolation and loneliness. The ‘Happy to Chat’ bench has returned to the church after it travelled the village in order to bring joy to those who haven’t been able to attend the church to socialise. The bench, complete with new sign after the original fell off in the heat, will now be situated back in its original place in the church garden.

DESPITE all the problems of the past few months, the Torrevieja U3A group is proceeding with the Annual Groups Fair this month. This year’s event will take place in a new venue as the Hi Life Bar and Restaurant, located at Calle Salvador Dali 20, Via Park 1, will be hosting the special event. The event is set to take place on Monday, September 28, at around 11am, running at reduced numbers due to cur-

rent health requirements. Masks will need to be worn at all times and all sanitation services will be available. Social distancing will need to be maintained and visitor numbers will be monitored to ensure compliance with all safety regulations. Food and drink plus bathroom facilities will be available inside the bar. The group will be hoping to see as many old and new ‘friends’ as possible on what should prove to be a lovely day.

DERELICT boats, long abandoned by their owners, are being removed from the neglected marina at Campello’s Cala Baeza beach. The town hall’s Environment and Beaches departments acted after complaints from members of the public and the EU opposition party reached the Spanish media. Julio Oca, councillor for both departments, explained that disposing of eight boats aground on the beach, was the town hall’s responsibility. One was registered to a Villajoyosa res-

A plan to reduce the courses to 50 per cent capacity will be covered by splitting groups in order to maintain the number of places originally being offered. Six to 10 students will be able to attend classes with strict safety procedures to be followed. Students will have their temperatures taken, safety distances will be observed and there will be a gap of 15 minutes between classes to give the room adequate aeration. ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY-ONE National Police officers made their first official appearance in Benidorm’s Plaza de los Reyes de España. The new intake are joining National Police stations in Benidorm, Denia, Alcoy, Elda, Alicante City, Elche and Orihuela where they will spend 11 months as trainees. The ceremony began at 10.30am when the Provincial Commissioner, Ignacio del Olmo, received Benidorm’s mayor Toni Perez before they both welcomed Araceli Poblador, the central government’s sub-delegate to Alicante Province. Once the dignitaries had left, Toni Perez together with Benidorm’s National Police commissioner Ceferino Serrano, welcomed the 34 officers assigned to the town. Wishing them good luck, Perez pointed out that they were in “frontline contact” with the local population, and there was no better place than Benidorm to progress with their training. “What people most value about Benidorm is its climate, its beaches and its safety,” said the mayor, urging them to use all their efforts to ensure that this did not change.

In praise of paella THE Valencian Community’s Tourist Board is inviting everybody to take part in World Paella Day on September 20. The regional authorities want to celebrate a universal dish that unites families and friends as they sit round the table but also symbolises the Valencian Community’s gastronomic culture and the Mediterranean way of life. “Get out the ingredients and turn on the hobs at home,” the Tourist Board said. “Owing to the present health crisis, online communication is especially relevant this year.” Participants can share videos, recipes, stories and photographs via internet channels and the social media with the #WORLDPAELLADAY2020 hashtag. Contest Coming Back to Santa Pola THE 13th National Contest of Monologues is coming back to Santa Pola, in what will bring smiles and laughter to those who purchased tickets back in March. The Youth and Culture Councils announced that the fun contest, which they have been busy trying to bring back following its suspension in midMarch, will be returning in September. The laugh out loud event will take place in the Auditorium El Palmeral, moving from the original location of the House of Culture following the Covid-19 crisis and subsequent State of Alarm, and will host the semi-final on Friday, September 18 and the final on Friday, September 25. Last year’s winner, comedian Jose Luis Buitrago, will be participating at the event. Fiesta Fireworks

ROCKETS were launched in honour of Virgen de Fátima on Saturday, September 5, as Guardamar began three days of unique celebrations and festivities. This year, the Fiesta del Campo went virtual as the fireworks were filmed and broadcast on Guardamar social media platforms. The celebrations continue on Sunday, September 13 at 10am when floral offerings to Virgen de Fátima are to be presented at a mass in the auditorium. Fireworks Castle will provide the finale to the festivities on Saturday, September 19 as at 9.30pm rockets will fire and light the night sky to bring the celebrations to a close.

Vehicle Upgrades in San Fulgencio SAN FULGENCIO police force has acquired three new vehicles as urgent upgrades were needed. The Department of Citizen Security, directed by the mayor, José Sampere, has leased the vehicles stating a need to change them “so that our officers have a more efficient and safer means of transport for the performance of their work.” The short-term lease guarantees the use of the vehicles until February with talks for longer vehicle hiring already underway. The new cars have been modified to fully adapt to police functions, one of them equipped with an ethylometer for carrying out breathalyser tests. José Sampere has expressed the urgent need for San Fulgencio to have a well-trained police force that has the necessary materials available to carry out its work.

CROSSINGS: Those with ASD will benefit through new road markings.

TORREVIEJA City Council has begun works to implement pictograms on pedestrian crossings throughout the city as they work towards making Torrevieja more accessible and friendly for ASD sufferers. Several blue pictograms, a colour that symbolises autism, appear on the freshly painted white lines so that those with ASD will be able to understand the basic traffic rules of the city. Stop, Look, Traffic Light / Car Stopped and Cross are pictograms being used on the road markings which will put people

on alert so they can cross the road safely. The developers of the project, the TEAVIAL Association, will provide the Torrevieja City Council and the city’s schools with a didactic guide. These guides are so that the public and students will have a better understanding of the meanings behind the pictograms and their importance in integrating ASD sufferers into normal situations. The project was launched on crossings surrounding schools and will continue throughout the city.

Ready to Run in Rafal RAFAL Running Sports Club, in collaboration with Rafal City Council, will hope to sound the starter pistol for their running event on Saturday, September 19. The event called seventh Villa de Rafal 5k, starts at 7pm and sees competitors start and finish at the Rafal Sports Centre after running the 5km course. The course consists of a street circuit which is completely flat and urban, passing through the main streets and avenues of the town.

There are many safety measures being put in place with organisers going to great lengths to make sure the race is run. LUISA BÓNE, who is responsible for Human Resources in the Orihuela City Council, has approved potential measures to support families and workers with the introduction of recoverable paid leave in case their children are forced into preventive Covid-19 isolation. “With the children returning to school there is a lot of uncertainty and concern among parents about how to deal with those cases in which young children must stay at home due to preventive isolation derived from Covid-19,” announced Bóne. She explained that the council was there to “offer solutions and provide facilities to workers who may find themselves in

that situation.” Speaking about the offer of paid leave, the councillor said, “depending on the job, the municipal employee may take advantage of [recoverable paid leave] if a young child must remain at home due to preventive isolation derived from Covid-19.” The offer of recoverable paid leave will be dependent on the worker accumulating up to 75 hours that will have to be recovered within a maximum period of three months. Those 75 hours are the number of working hours that coincide with the two weeks a child could be faced with confinement derived by Covid-19 protocols.

CHULO, a 15-year-old male horse, from the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, was taken to the Hospital Veterinario San Vicente for lifesaving surgery. The horse had developed the habit of ‘wind sucking,’ which horses usually develop as a result of boredom or stress, which has made him prone to colic. On Saturday, worried staff at the centre found him struggling, rolling around in his field in a lot of pain and he was taken to the horse hospital. Once there, the vets

could see a huge impaction in his greater colon that was also putting pressure on the small intestine. They immediately decided to perform emergency surgery to save his life. Thankfully, everything went well and Chulo is currently in the intensive care unit. Horse surgeries are expensive due to the cost of the procedures and sophisticated equipment and the surgery is likely to cost over €3,000. They desperately need your help. If you would like to do-

THE Valencian Community’s beefed-up Covid19 restrictions were extended for another three weeks on Monday September 7. Speaking last weekend after a video conference with Health chief Ana Barcelo, the regional president Ximo Puig said that the evolution of the coronavirus did not justify easing the tougher restrictions introduced on August 17. These have now been extended to gambling premises and casinos, which must now close at 1am and may not admit new clients after 12 midnight. Puig also clarified that the 1.5-metre social distancing rule in restaurants and cafes does not only apply to the distance between tables, but also the persons sitting at them. “It is essential to step up the pace of our control over the pandemic,” Puig

THE crumbling remains of a hotel in Arenales del Sol will have the fences surrounding it reinforced as demolition talks are still ongoing. The unsafe and hideous looking structure has been sitting there for over four years now with the Elche City Council still receiving criticism for their inaction in knocking it down. Councillor for Urban Planning, Ana Arabid, has requested a new meeting with the Provincial Coastal Directorate in the hopes that plans will be made to

EWN spoke to locals who have described the building as a “hideous hotel” and an “eyesore” and explained that it is “extremely dangerous.” Many residents are concern by the number of “teenagers and children” accessing the site at night to “graffiti or hang out.”

Play-Areas Renovated in Rojales IN a significant boost to the children of the municipality, major works are being carried out on parks and play-areas. Children and their parents will be pleased to see that these areas in Rojales are being renovated and improved. It has been a tough year for many families so far and this gesture from the City Council will come as welcomed relief. Four areas have been scheduled for works with some already underway.

Swim tests began for the applicants on Monday, September 7, at the municipal swimming pool of El Palmar. In total 164 applicants, out of the 821 people who registered, participated in the 50-metre swim test. In what is the last exam of the physical tests, those who pass them will have to take a practical course, an oral exam and a ‘psycho-technical’ interview. The tests to fill the 64 available places on the Local Police force were suspended on March 13, given the evolution of the pandemic at that time.

Successful Skin Cancer Surgery TV presenter Mónica Carrilo, from Elche, has recovered from skin cancer surgery and is finally back in front of the camera. Carrilo, who hosts the Weekend News every Saturday and Sunday, 3pm - 9pm on Antena 3, has been resting at home after the removal of a carcinoma on her nose. She took to her Twitter account to show pictures of herself before and after the surgery. The cancer was detected by doctors in June and the fast-acting doctors removed the carcinoma the same day. “[I detected] a small wound that had not finished healing for a couple of months [and] finally, the surgeon confirmed that it was a basal cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer located in the nose. That same day the doctor removed it and I began a slow recovery period until my return to work,” the TV presenter explained.

Back to School Campaign A CAMPAIGN has been launched by the councillor for Commerce, Víctor Bernabéu, which will see 10 vouchers of €50 available to win when purchases are made at participating local businesses. The ‘Back to School’

campaign organised by the Orihuela Merchants Association (ACMO), in collaboration with the Department of Commerce, runs September 1 to 30. As Víctor Bernabéu explains, “the objective of this Department is to promote

Quarantined worker knifes his boss AN Almeria hospital laboratory worker infected with Covid-19 is under arrest for knifing his boss, blaming him for his positive test result. The angry employee, who had been in quarantine, left the lab head with a stab wound in the arm. Almeria police detained the aggressor, identified as 44-year-old RFCF, shortly after the 091 emergency service centre reported the attack at the Torrecardenas hospital in the provincial capital. Hospital staff informed officers that the lab worker had tested positive for the virus, and from that moment they took every precaution and followed all the measures set out in the Covid-19 action protocol to the letter. Within days of an appeal for support in Euro Weekly News, floods of donations have been received, including the amazing gift of a fully equipped industrial kitchen from local business, Yorkshire Linen. “It has been fantastic, we have been so busy collecting donations over the last few days,” said project founder, Arne Soeten. “On Sunday (September 6) we were given some kitchen gear and then of course we have been given a whole kitchen which we will be fitting at our halfway house in Benitachell, huge thanks to Yorkshire Linen.” This is in addition to the clean clothes for men, women and children as well as new underwear and donations, collected the previous weekend when volunteers from the non-religious and non-profit organisation parked up their yellow Project Costa ‘Tweety’ van at Javea Port. society, with some of them having first-hand experience of being homeless. “We want to start by feeding the homeless, giving out clothes and sleeping bags. As we get to know them, we will be able to see who wants a second chance at life and we will help

them get back into society.” Assisting the team is Stephan, a homeless man who has become a familiar face in Albir, along with his white dog carried about in his adapted bicycle. “We have made contact with Stephan who will show us around Albir and Altea and help us meet with people living on the streets. “We are taking it one day at a time to reach our goal, but things are moving very fast. It’s really encouraging,” said Arne. Meanwhile, volunteer Steven Barnes, a chef and former restaurant owner from Yorkshire, is busy making plans for the mountain of meals he will be preparing from Project Costa’s new kitchen. And he has a wealth of experience of both feeding the homeless and living on the streets, having cooked 200 meals three times a week for the less fortunate in Rome. Steve is proof of how easy it is to end up homeless after his own

business fell victim to the credit crunch and went into liquidation while living in Rome. It was then he set himself the challenge of getting homeless people off the streets and started volunteer group, Project Rome. “There are thousands of people living on the streets in Rome, it is a bit different here to the Costa Blanca, but the concept is the same. “Once we are up and running, I really want the public to be involved. I’d like people to come and taste the nutritional food I will be preparing and give their feedback.” As well as kitchen equipment, clothes, food and sleeping bags are still needed to ensure Project Costa can reach as many people as possible. Counterfeit Goods Seized

SEIZED: Counterfeit goods taken off the streets. A LARGE number of counterfeit goods have been seized by the Torrevieja police and will not be making their way onto the streets. In a successful operation carried out by the Operational Reinforcement Group, a division within the Local Police department in Torrevieja, it is part of the council’s determination to end the unauthorised sales of counterfeit goods on the streets of its city.

Eight-hundred counterfeit goods were seized in the operation, as well as the arrest of a resident who was apprehended driving the goods, and also people, to start selling the goods. An initial raid happened next to the monument of the Man of the Sea, of the Paseo MarĂ­timo Juan Aparicio, resulting in 800 counterfeit goods being found. A second raid saw the capture of the vehicle driver.

palities that have declared themselves free of circuses with wild animals. According to Marta Merchán of InfoCircos, “The ban on the use of wild animals in circus shows is something about which there is a broad consensus, not only at a social level but, as is being seen in the majority of Communities and municipalities, from all political parties.”

The Consumer Ministry is looking at banning numbers with the prefix, which are used by numerous telephone services. “We are starting the process for the prohibition of 902, which is going to prohibit the use of these customer service numbers

because they increase working families’ bills when they are exercising their right to complain,� Consumer Minister Alberto Garzon said in an interview with Canal Sur radio on Friday September 4. The aim is to put an end to what the minister said was a widespread abuse by companies, which has been made worse by lockdown and the Covid-19 pandemic as people have been unable

to make enquiries or sort out problems face-to-face and have had to resort to the 902 numbers. The Consumer Ministry is now preparing a modification to the General Law for the Defence of Consumers and Users to prevent companies from applying prices which exceed the usual tariffs for a landline or standard mobile phone call for their customer service lines, according to Spanish press.

Barbaric bashing ONE of Spain's most controversial traditions, bullfighting, has taken a bashing during the health crisis with some fearing the congregating of so many as a health hazard leading to cancellations in Madrid this weekend. However, most would love to see it gone for good because of its sheer brutality. Surely anything that takes away from the pockets of promoters and the fighters themselves can be seen as a victory over the barbaric ‘sport.’ This year’s major bullfighting festivities are at an all-time low during the month of September, with only 20 events being held. This represents a reduction of 94 per cent compared to those registered last year during what is normally one of the periods of greatest activity. While Madrid has suspended the two bullfights planned this weekend, several bullfighting festivals have gone ahead in Andalucia and Castilla la Mancha. Should the virus continue to have an effect on attendance numbers, will those who call for a ban on the so-called ‘barbarism’ finally see the tradition fall to its knees?

The name was given to him by his co-writer Lord Tupelo, or Bob, when they began an inventive way to put together their collective thoughts. “We used to bounce ideas off each other, I would write some of it then pass it on to him. Bob could choose to follow the direction I was going or take the story in a completely different direction. A lot of was written under the influence of Bob’s home brew!” He added, “The bulk of the book was written from about 1987 to 1992 when it was completed. At that point we tried to have it published, but with no success.” The two lost touch over the years and it wasn’t until a couple of years ago when Pete discovered the folder whilst tidying up during a break from work that the project again saw the light

of day. “I decided to tidy it up a bit, rewrite it on the Mac and send it to publishers. I was amazed to receive an offer from Montag Press but had not spoken to Bob for so long and was struggling to find him.” In an odd twist of fate, Pete finally managed to find him in the place where all of us may logically start... through a friend that Bob played table tennis with! The two finally saw their imaginative piece of work come together and it has now been released on Amazon both in a worldwide digital format and paperback in the States. JET2: Have taken the decision to suspend flights to Spain and Croatia.

JET2 cancels all flights to mainland Spain for the rest of the summer and also advised it would not be flying to parts of Croatia either.

Travellers hoping to fly off for last-minute trips to spain were left devastated after travel giant Jet2 cancelled all flights to the mainland. They revealed the news after government guidance on quarantine rules for travellers from the country remained the same. Spain was removed from the UK government’s ‘safe lists’ on July 25. All flights from the company to Croatia before November will now be automatically cancelled by Jet2holidays, full refunds will

be issued to customers. In a communication to agents, the operator said: “Jet2holidays have taken the decision to extend the suspension of our flights and holidays programme to Croatia due to the continued Covid-19 pandemic.” In a separate communication to agents, Jet2 confirmed its holidays to mainland Spain, including Malaga, Alicante and Barcelona, were also cancelled until the same dates. Jet2 urged the UK government to implement “a

targeted approach to travel advice, instead of the current blanket ban approach.” In a statement shared on Twitter, the company said: “Where customers are affected by any programme changes, we have been repeatedly recognised for how we have been looking after them, offering the option to rebook with no admin fee, a refund credit note, or a full cash refund, and we are contacting customers to discuss these options.

As seen in our communities, the rules imposed from our ‘trusted institutions’ are not profitable for most businesses which are closing down and in turn causing a domino effect on the economy and that is also reaching out into health issues which are not Covid related. However, health has a far more extensive overall reach than what we can physically view.

A few days ago, the NGO Doctors Sans Frontières published a devastating report on what happened in care homes in Spain during the worst months of the pandemic. It explains, among many other things, the death of the elderly due to sorrow and abandonment produced by isolation

which was decreed by our governments. So, it seems that our health authorities imposed strict rules to protect our loved ones from coronavirus, but not from death. Furthermore, we were also told how to bury our loved ones, as cremation was compulsory during these months in

Spain and in most cases, postmortems were not allowed. As also seen this summer, towns such as Aranda del Duero in the north of Spain were sent back into lockdown with no hospital cases and based only on the PCR tests, that are now being questioned by Professor Carl Heneghan from the University of Oxford’s Centre for Evidence-based Medicine. This has left many people without work causing even more stress on the government’s treasury and people’s well-being and way of life. The perspective most people fail to see is that isolation is only sustainable for certain sectors, who can financially sustain themselves. It seems as if politicians are happy to ensure that people do not get Covid, even if the decisions fail to secure a future free from emotional problems or hunger due to the collapse of the economy.

First, the tourist stay of 90 days in a 180­ YOU AND THE LAW day period is not a IN SPAIN ‘new ruling.’ It is an EU regulation which has been in effect for some years. The confusion arose because various countries, includ­ ing Spain, did not strictly enforce it. Yes, your assump­ tions are correct. You must remain outside Spain for 90 days. And you must not stay in any European Union country except your country of residence.

Costa Coffee cuts

POPULAR BRAND: Trade is returning, but takings are definitely down. COSTA COFFEE owned by the Coca-Cola group is probably the most popular of the coffee café brands in the UK, but it is suffering and is considering shedding around 1,650 jobs from its 2,700 stores of which 1,100 are franchises. The company closed almost all of its outlets for six weeks during the lockdown and so far 300 remain closed, but with the downturn in footfall caused by fewer shoppers and office workers, takings are definitely down. Throughout the pandemic, Costa has taken action to pro­ vide, where possible, financial support and to look after em­ ployees and while stores were closed, all team members were put on the furlough scheme provided by the gov­ ernment, with their salary topped up by Costa to 100 per cent for 12 weeks.

It agrees that trade is re­ turning, helped by the gov­ ernment’s VAT reduction, which Costa passed on to customers in full, and the re­ cent ‘Eat Out To Help Out’ Scheme, but there remain high levels of uncertainty as to when trade will recover to pre­Covid levels. Costa claims that it has made significant investments in safely accelerating the re­ opening of stores, ensuring they are safe for customers and team members and made the difficult decision to freeze all pay increases within the Support Centre and cut all non­essential expenditure. Managing Director Neil Lake said following the announce­ ment, “Today’s announce­ ment to our store teams was an extremely difficult decision to make. Our baristas are the heart of the Costa business and I am truly sorry that many now face uncertainty follow­ ing today’s news.”

Xanadú for sale AS previously reported, British developer Intu Properties has been placed into Administration (a form of bankruptcy) and as expected, liquidator KPMG has instructed a Spanish agency to try to find a buyer for its 50 per stake in Madrid shopping centre Xanadú. It was as recently as 2017 that Intu purchased the centre for €530 million and then quickly sold half to Nuveen Real Estate Fund and last year it managed to sell its Zaragoza shopping centre and pulled out of a planned development in Torremolinos.

BUSINESS EXTRA Downgraded MOODYS rating agency has downgraded Spanish company ProSil Acquisition SA which trades in non-performing loans (NPL). Stronger consumer protection and lack of activity in courts due to the pandemic suggests that income for 2020 will see a significant fall.

It’s really not their fault

WE really shouldn’t be blaming the immigrants for pouring across the channel in their droves. It’s really not their fault. If you were sitting in a muddy foreign field, rain dripping on your head through the holes in your tatty tarpaulin ceiling and someone showed you a photo of the luxury hotel room you could be occupying by crossing a mere 20 odd miles of fairly safe water, wouldn’t you give it a go? I know I would. The irony is that the photos and reports they receive are all true. Many of those who have ‘made it,’ actually are sitting in comfortable, free hotel rooms with telly and ensuite bathrooms. Recently I watched Alan Boulton interviewing an ex border control chief. ‘What actually happens to the majority of these people when they are picked up’ he asked? ‘Well,’ the ex-chief explained. ‘Ultimately they are all taken somewhere to be processed; we take their particulars and fingerprints and then let them go’! Apparently, in an act of naivety that almost defies the imagination, they are subsequently instructed to ‘report back in a couple of weeks’! ‘And what percentage com-

payers’ money and are a large part of the problem. The message that goes back across the channel has to change. It simply cannot appear to offer desperate people a kind of utopian Shangri-La, with free legal aid to explore a multitude of loopholes in a system that already resembles a terminally perforated colander. For heaven’s sake someone get a grip. The UK is rapidly losing control and when it hits the fan, don’t look to the likes of Gary Lineker to solve the problem - it just ain’t going to happen. Delighted to see the awful Kay Burley’s new show being slated by the critics. This bitchy egotistical woman, who laughingly sees herself as a ‘probing’ reporter, is nothing more than a nasty bitter individual who, if she wasn’t a major shareholder, would have been put out to graze by SKY news years ago. Constructive noises issuing from the mouth of Tim Davies the new Director General of the BBC. Let’s just see if he puts his money anywhere in its vicinity. Suited and booted: those days are so over!

BARRY DUKE LAST Saturday I posted a wedding picture on Facebook to celebrate the third anniversary of my marriage to Marcus, my companion of 23 years. One friend commented ‘My, oh my, you do scrub up well!’ That got me thinking about the days when my entire career in PR and publishing was spent being suited and booted. So much money was sloshing about in Thatcher’s ‘greed is good’ Britain at the time that soon I discovered I could afford a suit tailored in Saville Row. But all the good feelings I had when I strolled into Gieves & Hawkes gave way to embarrassment and fury when a supercilious assistant gave me the once over and said ‘I’m sure we can create something suitable for a portly young gentleman such as yourself.’ Portly? I’d never been called portly in my life, and I was mortified. Truth was that the good life had endowed me with a sizable gut, but

ous exercise, 18 months later I got my first bespoke suit, a seductive black silk number, just in time for a company dinner at posh restaurant in Soho. The event was intended as

a bonding session for two groups working for separate companies that had merged. My team comprised mainly down-to-earth East-Enders. The oth-

er was made up of insufferable toffs and toffettes, and as soon as the two sides met, you could cut the air of hostility with a chainsaw. Somehow, despite their side and our trading dirty looks and insults, we actually managed to end the meal without violence. But then a creep - an 80s version of Jacob Rees-Mogg - decided to ‘kill’ a profiterole served as dessert by placing it on the table and banging it with a fist. The result: the whole of the front of my new suit got spattered with cream. I grabbed his tie, dragged him over the table and onto the floor and began exchanging blows. Within seconds a full-scale brawl you know the kind, there’s one in every western movie ever made ensued. Staff managed to break up the fight involving around 30 and we were all tossed out and warned never, EVER to return. When I became self-employed about 30 years ago, I donated my entire wardrobe to a charity shop, and never wore a suit again until the day I married. Nowadays I’m far happier looking like an old biker dude than an 80s yuppie.

SPANISH WORDS IN ENGLISH JOHN

LAST week I wrote about the importance of learning the Spanish language when you live here, but did you know that quite a number of words in the English language actually come from Spanish. Joseph Williams was an expert on the origins of the English language. He studied it for years and wrote books on the subject. He found that our native tongue is a bit of a mongrel language. He surmised that about 40 per cent of our words comes from French and that only about a third is actually native to Britain and that 15 per cent comes from Latin. All other languages combined contribute just 5 per cent of our words. One of those ‘other’ languages is Spanish. Whilst the impact of Spanish

LEARNING SPANISH: Maybe it wouldn’t be that hard to learn after all. on English is lower than French and Latin, there’s certainly enough of it in our language to have had quite an effect on it. From a canyon to a caldera and a tornado to a tango, let’s take a mini tour through the influence of Spanish on English. Here goes! Some of the Spanish words in

our language are quite obvious like patio, pronto, cafeteria, fiesta and siesta, but many words have derived from Spanish over the years and are not quite so obvious at first. The words vanilla and oregano are direct steals from it. The Spanish verb saber means ‘to know.’ This is where we get the slang word savvy

from. The word cargo comes from the verb cargar which means to load. Without the Spanish language there would be no such thing as a ‘macho’ man. Then there are words that are obviously Spanish like paella, bodega and matador as well as plaza, which is a public square.

In the animal kingdom a number of animals have Spanish names that have crossed over into English. The puma, for example and the ar madillo are direct steals along with mosquito, coyote and iguana. The barracuda and mustang are also from Spanish. Breeze comes from the word brisa, which means a light wind and chaps, that cowboys wear on the legs comes from the Mexican Spanish word chaparreras. The word lazo in Spanish is knot and has developed into the lasso that cowboys use to catch a horse. They would probably use that lasso on a ranch which comes from the word rancho. There are a number of words that are quite obviously Spanish that we might use like, nacho, sombrero, samba, tequila and tortilla. On top of all that, most words that end in ‘tion’ in English end in ‘cion’ in Spanish. So! Maybe Spanish wouldn’t be that hard to learn after all!

Hola Otoño GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY AS I walked to a meeting, early on Tuesday morning, I suddenly felt the cool air of autumn. I stopped in the centre of Marbella, and watched as the sun came up, offering golden hues through the trees of Parque de la Alameda. The cool air, the golden light, the smell of the bakery, and the sound of the city, coming to life slowly. Sometimes the most simple things, stop us in our tracks and remind us, that the world keeps going. Emerging from my meeting, a very successful one, I may add, the temperature had climbed fast to 28ºC and it felt much like summer once again. September has arrived out of nowhere, and of course we have been expecting it, but somehow, autumn 2020 arrived without the usual back to school television commercials, or advertising campaigns featuring falling leaves and Halloween references. It just arrived, and for me it’s most welcome. The changing of the seasons is something I look forward to, and since moving to Marbella, autumn has become the best. After long, hot and lazy, if not sometimes crazy, days of August, autumn brings with it an opportunity to move indoors and light the fires. The climate here in autumn is pretty much ideal - temperatures still warm enough to hit the beach, but cool enough to pull out the cashmere in the evenings. Lunching at The Marbella Club on Thursday, I sat, staring out to sea, beaches now empty and the pace of life, feeling even a little slower than before. Yes, we only had a very short summer season, and there were masks and social distancing to contend with, but we still had the opportunity to grab a little bit of new normal on the beaches. My home is right on the beach, so, after months of lockdown, to see people splashing in the sea, or the sound of children laughing, was great. However, now summer has passed, it feels as if the beach is almost private once again. It’s good for the mind. And while keeping our mental health in check has never

IT’S GOOD: Drinking watermelon juice. been more important, so too is the need to look after our day-to-day general health. With the virus still very much in the news, and cases on the rise, we keep washing our hands and protecting ourselves from germs entering our bodies. However, it’s also time to up our game and our vitamin intake. Protecting from the inside. I’ve started eating more and more fruit and vegetables. I eat a lot anyhow, roughly 20 tomatoes per week (usually in the form of Insalata Caprese, if I’m honest), not to mention my new addiction to juicing. I go through phases of juicing, and right now, if I can juice it, I do it. Even carrot juice, with a little Grey Goose, has become my go-to five o’clock martini. After just five days of lower alcohol intake, longer running distances and heaps of foods packed with vitamins, I feel stronger and more alive. Ready for anything, in fact. So bring it on!

HEARTBREAKING DEAR Euro Weekly News, It was so upsetting to hear of the two hugely destructive fires in the Costa del Sol, Sisu and Laguna Village. It is the last thing these business owners need at such a bad time for the tourist industry on the coast. The pictures of the charred building remains were heartbreaking. I really hope the community will come together and create some kind of benefit for them, if not to help them with their losses then just to show that they have some support. I don’t know if that kind of thing happens in Spain but in Portland, where I am originally from, that is the kind of thing that we would do. I would like to send all my support to anybody that may have been employed there or who was involved in the fighting of the fires. Regards Sarah Seitz

AIR bridges, red lists and the Great British quarantine debate. What on earth is going on? Country in, country out, country back in again. No wonder holidaymakers are tearing their hair out with confusion. After UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock’s comments on British TV last week, travellers already in Portugal started panic buying flights to get them back as soon as possible, his vague replies, when questioned about an imminent quarantine decision, left them second-guessing Parliaments decisions. Then, what happens, they leave it alone, well kind of. They left it for travellers to England and Northern Ireland, but Scotland and Wales decided to make their own decision and lower the drawbridge on the air bridge, they put a quarantine in place for those coming from Portugal. Now holidaymakers or those who wish to return to second homes or families are living in an added fear or confusion if they too will be put under this strain and uncertainty. The Scots were already hoping for the quarantine to be lifted between them and holiday favourite, Spain, but in adding Portugal to a red list the chances of that happening are slim to none. Sure, people understand that as Covid figures rise in each or any country there is a fear of transmission between countries. Should people be able to make up their own minds about travelling? Especially if it puts their livelihood or even mental state at risk. The news of a testing facility at Heathrow sitting unused was a revelation, who knew? If that was a way of allowing you in without quarantine you can be sure that everybody would be heading there, wouldn’t they?

Welcome back Dear Euro Weekly News, I read in your paper that The Food Fairies are about to make a welcome return to the Costa del Sol. Must I say I have missed reading about the great help they gave families during the first parts of the virus and the initial shock of isolation. I totally understand why they have made a comeback, families are still in need. My wife and I often take care packages to our local food bank when able and it is upsetting to see young children waiting for their next meal. After the impact the virus has had on employment I am sure there must be even more families going without than before, such a shame, I am happy they will get some help from these magnificent girls. You are bang on and that was probably why the original method of marking was fairer but did not produce the marks that a small proportion thought they should get! However, you were diplomatic not to mention that a proportion of those going to Uni are only doing so to put off the evil day when they will have to work for a living and to have a good time. Again, you were spot on with your remarks about Boris and I would wager that the irate farmer was not a Conservative! Yet another ridiculous decision MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man NEVER watched Last Night of the Proms all the way through - not my thing really but when I heard the BBC were going to ban Land of Hope and Glory and Rule Britannia I was angry. Yet another ridiculous decision made by - well I don’t actually know by whom. I’m sure it references slavery plus other things that have scared someone. I don’t even know what the words of the songs are but whenever I have seen glimpses of people singing it they don’t appear to be white supremists or at a National Front meeting. Just a bunch of people having a jolly good night out. Anyway we can stand down now as the Beeb has changed its mind. As an aside when the ban was announced Land of Hope and Glory topped the charts. Joke isn’t it? I really want to write about Trump but to be honest I just don’t have enough space here to list all the lies and hate he pedals so I won’t - unless I’m given more space one week.

I have grey hair, what’s left of it. I now have a fivehead. My forehead went long ago and when I do have it cut I decline the offer to be shown the back of it in the mirror. I’m happy to remember it as it was - thick, lush and curly, not the shiny space that is now there. As it’s grey my daughter bought me some special shampoo for a nice silvery look. This is achieved because the shampoo is purple. I read the instructions the best I could and washed me barnet. I now look like my old aunty Doris who used to have a purple rinse. You all know the look I’m talking about. I might have to re-read the instructions. OK just getting ready to pop out for a quick trip to shops. Checklist - house keys, phone, car keys, sighted sunglasses that my driving licence says I have to wear even though I don’t wear glasses for anything else. Mask, hand sanitiser, exception note from doctor in case I get stopped by the police for getting out of my car and walking to shop without mask on. And, of course, a hat to cover my purple hair!! IN the aftermath of A-level Results Day, students took to the streets to protest. UK tabloids described how students’ lives had been ‘wrecked by the exam grade fiasco.’ No! Drug addiction wrecks lives. Serious injury can wreck lives too. Having your (teacher assessed) exam marks downgraded does not. Nobody can ignore Black Lives Matter or Greta Thunberg’s and Extinction Rebellion’s climate change protest marches. But some in the media now argue that the young - or Generation Covid as they’re labelled - are mobilising not exactly revolution, but change. Young people have always rebelled though, breaking the rules and making their own up as they go along. The problem is, now they’re taught how to more effectively at school/college. The sooner they learn that there are no free lunch-

You Are What You Feel. You Create What You Think DIONE LOCKYER BEYOND our physical body, our organs and bones, we are energy. You may have heard the saying ‘Like attracts like’ or ‘Ask, Believe, Receive.’ Many simple phrases capture the concept of the Law Of Attraction. Everything we create comes from a force of energy. That energy starts from our thoughts, however, before our thoughts, come the feelings. If

we connect a strong feeling or emotion to a thought, it is the universal law that this MUST become an experience. For example; If you want to spring clean the house, you do not aimlessly wander around and start cleaning. You have the idea (the thought), followed by the feeling and then take action. Sometimes we ‘feel’ like doing something, and other times, we don’t. Either way, it is produced by either a thought or a feeling. Our emotions are what create our manifestations. The two most important emotions to ensure you manifest your desires are Passion and Excitement.

Take a look back at a time in your life, where you felt genuine passion and excitement. It could have been with regards to a new job, a promotion or the thought of having a child. You may not have been aware, but the moment you felt that genuine passion and excitement, you were visualising the event and by visualising, you were manifesting the thought and feeling into an experience. The fact that 3 per cent of the population earn approximately 97 per cent of all income, isn’t down to luck. It is down to the fact that they believe and live by the Law Of Attraction. Many people live their lives,

the way society tells them to. We become a creature of habit, comparing ourselves to people around us. By doing this, we live our lives with limited beliefs, therefore, creating a limited lifestyle. One way to create a limitless life is affirmations. Affirmations are a short statement, that you repeat all day, every day, but with feeling. For example; If you have a bad ‘feeling’ towards money, then the law is to create a further lack of money. However, by using an affirmation such as, ‘money comes to me easily and frequently,’ this can change. It is important to note that but just repeating the

words, nothing will change. You have to FEEL and BELIEVE in what you are saying. This particular affirmation is one I put to the test. I even went a step further and created a cheque for a specific amount. I held that cheque in my hand, every night before I went to bed and visualised receiving it. I created the feeling, the thought and the visualisation. Within a week, I received the exact amount I’d asked for. Whilst this may seem far fetched for some, that is because you live with limited beliefs. Why not give it a try yourself? What do you have to lose?

WITH children spending as much as six hours a day on smartphones and other digital devices, Specsavers Ópticas is encouraging students to have their eyes tested before they return to school following months of lockdown learning. It is estimated that we’ve logged an extra five billion hours online globally since our daily lives went virtual due to the pandemic, with the increased screen time having an impact on eye health. In fact, in a Specsavers’ survey, 87 per cent of parents have

cas Guardamar says: “Often children do not take adequate breaks from their screens, which can cause eye strain and potentially damage their eye health, so they may notice differences in their vision when they go back to full-time education in school.” Eye strain Schools are investing in technological devices, such as tablets and laptops, to aid learning and ensure that all students can continue their education in the case of a return to home

schooling. Lisa says: “Eyes can often become strained when focusing on screens for a long period which, while it is not usually serious, can be particularly uncomfortable. “Similarly, if children’s eyes are fixated on a single object for a long period of time, such as a white board, this can also cause strain. Symptoms to look out for include eye discomfort, headaches, sore or tired eyes, difficulty focusing, dry eyes, blurred or double vision, and increased

sensitivity to light.’ Follow the 20:6:20 rule Lisa therefore advises students to follow the 20:6:20 rule, getting children to look up/away from their screen and/or board every 20 minutes at something six metres away for at least 20 seconds, as this helps to relax the eye muscles. Outdoor time Children are also encouraged to make the most of their breaks through using outdoor time in the playground. “Aerobic exercise is vital for children’s eye health

as it increases essential oxygen supplies to the optic nerve and lowers pressure in the eyes,” says Lisa. “The outdoors also provides many things for us to look at and helps to prevent eyes straining when fixated on a single object for a prolonged period of time. “In fact, studies have shown that if children just spend an extra hour outdoors a week, then their risk of developing myopia (shortsightedness) drops by 14 per cent.” Stay hydrated “It’s also good general health advice for pupils to keep their water bottle topped up, particularly when students are stuck indoors in classrooms, the weather is particularly hot, or if the school has air-conditioning, as good hydration can help avoid dry eye,” suggests Lisa.

Stress is a common trigger for almost any mental health disorder. The more stress you have in your life, the more likely you will be tempted to resort to old thought patterns and behaviours. Try them out to determine the methods that you enjoy most and practise them on a regular basis. 2. Avoid old habits and patterns You will need to make a conscious effort to stay away from some of the issues, situations, or triggers that put you at risk. Avoid the temptation to avoid change. The ‘new and improved you’ will have a difficult time succeeding if you keep resorting to what you did in the past. Change is hard. 3. Get help Seek help immediately for any serious mental health issues that suddenly crop up. If you can address these unresolved issues and work through them, your risk of relapse will be much lower. 4. Watch Out for Substance Abuse It’s common for young people that struggle with mental health disorders to self-medicate. Even though alcohol is a depressant, it’s often used to numb the side effects or symptoms of depression. 5. Stick to Your Treatment Plan After you’ve completed a treatment programme, it’s crucial that you follow the plan you developed with your therapists and doctors.

If you are supposed to attend regular therapy sessions, don’t skip appointments. If medications are involved in your treatment routine, follow the orders for the prescription. 6. Have a Backup Plan If you experience a setback, make sure you have a plan in place. Mistakes happen. Knowing what you might do ahead of time can be very effective when you feel you are being tested by tough times. The worst thing you can do is give up. 7. Find healthy new ways to have fun The old behaviour patterns may have taken a lot of time and energy. Replace them with activities that add joy to your life. Consider trying a new hobby or sport. Having a new interest can make you a lot less vulnerable to relapse. 8. Educate yourself Read books or network with others that are actively engaged in strengthening their recovery. Find out what worked for other people. The more you learn, the more coping skills you’ll have for sustaining your recovery. 9. Build a strong support system The more people someone has in their life that want to lift them up, the odds of them falling down decrease. Deepen your ties to the ones you trust. Special friends, family members, classmates, co-workers, or therapists can be great resources when you need them the most. 10. Remember your goals Don’t lose sight of the big picture. Continue to strive for your vision of the way you want your life to be. Along the way, set smaller attainable goals, too. This can help keep you focused and on track. 11. Know that this too will pass If you experience a relapse, try to learn from it. It’s important to remember that relapse episodes are often a normal and natural part of recovery. Some do it via special offers, extra equipment and regular facelifts and others take a simpler route to success. One such maker is Suzuki. The Japanese car maker recently celebrated its centenary and is known for small cars, SUVs and motorbikes along with marine engines and ATVs. One of their best known, and most admired SUVs is the diminutive Jimny, which is a formidable offroad performer. In slightly larger form their Vitara makes for a practical and comfortable on and offroader, with more than a dash of old fashioned style. Thanks to its straightforward boxy design you can pack a lot into the Vitara and it

comes with a no nonsense, well-built feel. Prices start from €24,272 (£21,749) for the lead-in SZ4 which comes as standard with alloy wheels, adaptive cruise control, automatic air conditioning, automatic lights and wipers and Bluetooth. There’s just one power unit for the range and it’s a very good one too. The 1.4 litre turbocharged petrol engine also has an electric motor that helps economy, lowers emissions and gives a performance boost. In a week of sometimes not so leisurely driving I notched up an average 46 mpg. It’s a smooth and refined unit and possessed of enough power to nip past tractors and other slow traffic. The benchmark 100 kmh (62 mph) is passed in 9.5 seconds with a top speed of 190 kmh (118mph).

MOTORING

It’s no performance powerhouse but has more than enough capability to deal with motorway cruising speeds and overtakes on single carriageway roads. Inside the no nonsense approach continues with a comfortable look and feel albeit lacking in the interior fripperies of more flouncy rivals. Everything looks well able to stand the daily scuffs and knocks of everyday family and working life. A welcome lack of digital nonsense is heralded by buttons, and even on the touchscreen there’s minimal tapping required. Volkswagen Audi please note! Options include fourwheel-drive on the top of the range SZ5 model, along with some rather snazzy colour combinations and very sensibly priced styling upgrades. The Vitara makes for a sensible purchase given their wellearned reputation for reliability. Add in the generous levels of standard equipment and it’s not hard to see why the Vitara remains a popular choice.
